  1. Well, good evening. Thanks so much for coming.

  2. We're in the second of our Real Asianships series.

  3. Last week we looked at friendship. That was a struggle.

  4. This week we're looking at singleness.

  5. And that eclipsed last week's difficulty.

  6. Writing a biblical talk on friendship paled was easy compared to putting this together.

  7. I hope it's helpful to all of us.

  8. That's been my prayer. I've redrafted this talk five times.

  9. And the first three went in the bin and started again.

  10. So I hope that it's been refined rather than diluted as it's gone through its many iterations.

  11. Singleness is a tricky subject to write on for a great number of reasons.

  12. I read about seven books this week on the Christian view of singleness.

  13. I would say six of them were basically dating advice for single people clothed in Christian language.

  14. It's hard to write on because single status encapsulates a wide variety of people.

  15. Those that have never been married, those that are divorced, and those that are widowed are all at present single.

  16. It also encapsulates a wide range of ages.

  17. I'm sure there are different struggles if you're single at 20 than if you're single at 70.

  18. I also think there's a difference in gender.

  19. I think perhaps single women think differently about their singleness to single men.

  20. I can't say that for sure, having only got one perspective in my life.

  21. Singleness also varies between the individuals.

  22. Some single people see their singleness as a great blessing, whilst others see it as a great burden,

  23. and many find themselves somewhere along that spectrum, depending on the days.

  24. Some individuals have a real desire to be married, but yet remain single.

  25. Others, for varying reasons, value and relish their single status.

  26. Others started out with a desire to be married, but over time have learnt contentment in their singleness.

  27. Yes.

  28. I'm also very conscious that I'm speaking about singleness as someone miraculously who got married,

  29. which is more to do with the grace of my wife and the wisdom of God than anything to do with me.

  30. I found myself ironing this afternoon.

  31. Thus was the sanctifying influence of marriage.

  32. I thought to myself this would never have happened unless Aileen was gracious to me.

  33. I'm also very conscious that while writing this, I don't want to be glib or patronising or to diminish what can be a very real struggle or a very great blessing of being single.

  34. So having prayed, wrestled, read, ruminated and redrafted a lot, I hope that what I share this evening might be of real help.

  35. It might bring blessing and be an eye-opener for all of us, no matter our marital status.

  36. And we will leave enlightened, better equipped and with greater hoping in all that we have in Christ.

  37. All of us have at one time been single.

  38. And even if we're married, half of those people will perhaps leave this life single.

  39. So it is perhaps more relevant than you would imagine.

  40. So let me pray and then we'll get to work.

  41. Paul writes, and he died for all that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and was raised again.

  42. So from now on, we regard no one from a worldly point of view.

  43. Father, when it comes to this subject of relationships,

  44. Father, when it comes to this subject of fulfilment and romantic love or lack of it,

  45. Father, our world is saying one thing and your word is saying another.

  46. And so I really pray that we might think about this subject not from a worldly point of view,

  47. but we would see your wisdom, we would trust in your grace.

  48. And we would love your son most, over and above all things on this earth.

  49. So Lord, speak to us and help us guide our thinking, change our lives,

  50. courage us along the way in our pursuit of your son, Jesus, we pray.

  51. Amen.

  52. 2007 was the year in the UK where the number of single people,

  53. number of single adults for the first time outnumbered the number of married adults.

  54. We are now a majoritively unmarried culture.

  55. Marriage has been on the decline since 1971 and is projected to fall below 35% of the population by 2031.

  56. That only a third of adults in 15 years' time will be married.

  57. These statistics are slightly more in favour of marriage within the church, as you might expect.

  58. But single adults are a significant minority of most congregations.

  59. Many in our churches are single and we are ministering to a majority single culture.

  60. So thinking theologically about this subject is of vital importance.

  61. Our culture and its pedestalling of romantic love makes the challenge and perception of singleness worse in our eyes.

  62. Where would Hollywood be without the boy meets girl storyline?

  63. How many songs would be in the charts if it wasn't for our fixation with romantic love?

  64. What would people sing about if it isn't?

  65. The longing for a love you don't have, finding the love you long for,

  66. being rejected by the one you love or losing the love you once had.

  67. In the eyes of our world, all you need is love.

  68. And for that, in their eyes, you need a lover.

  69. If you type online dating into Google, you get 145 million hits in 0.31 seconds.

  70. It seems the only happy ending society can stomach is one with a couple walking hand in hand along the beach.

  71. And that couple is made up of two people who have found the one.

  72. Growing up, we give Barbie to our children for their birthdays and give them Ken for Christmas

  73. to make the picture complete and palatable.

  74. One of the most excruciating things I've ever had to do in ministry was speaking to an after-evening service Bible study,

  75. which was lovingly called the Fellowship of the No Rings,

  76. which was this collection of single people gathered from across three churches

  77. who basically got together in the hope that they might be saved from their single status.

  78. It was excruciating.

  79. The way this group was spoken about by those not in the group was utterly embarrassing

  80. and so dismissive and diminishing of these people.

  81. It revealed just how much culture would shape people's thinking about personhood, contentment, and completeness.

  82. Our surrounding culture sees people, 30 in their late 30s, who are still single,

  83. and their question is, what's wrong?

  84. Many of the books that I read simply said, if you're still single, it's your fault, you're too picky.

  85. Lower your standards and get on with it.

  86. So patronizing and so badly thought out.

  87. So what does God have to say about singleness?

  88. If we develop a biblical theology of singleness, how does that shape our thinking from God's Word

  89. about how to think about this subject, how we value and live out the truth of God's Word in our lives?

  90. Well, I think the first thing that I want to say is that the New Testament in particular

  91. speaks about singleness in a way that is revolutionary compared to all the other world religions.

  92. Astonishingly different.

  93. Whilst the vast majority of monotheistic religions of the world all share similar family values and sexual ethics,

  94. Christianity is worlds apart from these on the subject of singleness.

  95. In Judaism, marriage is considered a commandment and celibacy is deplored.

  96. In the Quran, the practice of celibacy is considered as exceeding the law of God.

  97. Whilst marriage is akin to divinity in Mormonism,

  98. where celestial marriage is necessary in order to enter heaven.

  99. In traditional cultures, you are a non-person until you're married.

  100. In modern cultures, you are unfulfilled unless you have a partner, husband or wife.

  101. Christianity, however, not only affirms singleness,

  102. but goes further describing it as a gift and a highly valued lifestyle within the believing community.

  103. However, there is a lot of work we need to do to see that in all its radicalness.

  104. I want to spend the first bit of time developing a biblical theology of singleness,

  105. which I assure you is a lot more exciting than it sounds.

  106. And then I want to see a few things that we can take away from that to think about singleness.

  107. So here we go.

  108. The creation, mandate and singleness.

  109. I wonder, what is the first commandment that God gives to his creation in the Bible?

  110. What is the first commandment that God gives to his creation in the Bible?

  111. Be fruitful and multiply.

  112. And who does he give that commandment to?

  113. He gives it to the fish of the sea and the birds of the air in Genesis 1, verse 22.

    Genesis 1:22

  114. In Genesis 1, 28, that same command is given to Adam and Eve with the added command to subdue the earth,

  115. to be God's vice-regents over creation.

  116. Therefore, in Eden, before the fall, reproducing oneself is a fundamental and natural task commissioned by God for all creation,

  117. including human beings.

  118. To achieve this end, it was necessary for the alone Adam to find, to have,

  119. to have created a bespoke companion for him, a helper.

  120. And so Eve is created that that creation mandate might be carried out.

  121. Therefore, we can conclude in the creation mandate,

  122. singleness was neither present nor appropriate,

  123. as the need to procreate was intrinsic to obeying God's command.

  124. See also in Genesis 3, as God is cursing them for their disobedience,

  125. how fundamental offspring are to the redemptive promise that God makes to Adam and Eve amidst the curses.

  126. So in Genesis 3, 15,

  127. And I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  128. and between your offspring and her offspring.

  129. He will crush your head and you will strike his heel.

  130. Therefore, the creation mandate continues,

  131. And these two set of offspring will continue a struggle down through the ages

  132. until one offspring will finally stamp out evil literally forever.

  133. And therefore, descendants and procreation continue on.

  134. Be fruitful and multiply in Eden.

  135. As they're kicked out of Eden, be fruitful and multiply seems to continue.

  136. After the flood, this mandate, be fruitful and multiply,

  137. is repeated to Noah twice,

  138. in Genesis 9, verse 1 and Genesis 9, verse 7.

    Genesis 9:1 Genesis 9:7

  139. So after the fall,

  140. once God presses the reset button on creation with the flood,

  141. the creation mandate still stands.

  142. The necessity to be fruitful and multiply.

  143. Therefore, who's in the ark?

  144. Noah and his wife.

  145. Shem, Ham and Japheth and their three wives.

  146. Because to fulfill this mandate, you cannot go it alone.

  147. If procreation is commanded,

  148. then singleness is not viable.

  149. Then we get to Abraham, Genesis 12.

  150. In Genesis 12, God makes a covenant with Abraham

  151. that is primarily involved in progeny,

  152. in offspring.

  153. So in Genesis 12, when the covenant is made,

  154. Now the Lord said to Abraham,

  155. Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house

  156. to the land that I will show you.

  157. And I will make you a great nation.

  158. And I will bless you and make your name great

  159. so that you will be a blessing.

  160. I will bless those who bless you.

  161. And him who dishonors you, I will curse.

  162. And in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  163. See that the core of this covenant surrounds the promise of children.

  164. Becoming a great nation requires the multiplying of descendants

  165. in order that the nation will be large and great and spectacular.

  166. And this idea to have a great name in a Semitic culture

  167. is to be remembered and venerated by your descendants.

  168. Abraham will have a multitude of offspring

  169. through which the world will be blessed.

  170. It's intrinsic there in Genesis 12.

  171. A few verses later, this is made more explicit.

  172. As Abraham looks out over Canaan,

  173. God says in verse 7,

  174. To your offspring I will give this land.

  175. This Abrahamic covenant is repeated

  176. and developed upon five different occasions in Genesis.

  177. And across the five, the promise of offspring

  178. is explicitly mentioned 12 times

  179. and illustrated using three different metaphors

  180. that Abraham's descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth,

  181. as numerous as the stars in the sky,

  182. and as numerous as the sand on the seashore.

  183. This dependence on offspring emphasizes the provision of God

  184. in overcoming Sarah's barrenness.

  185. If procreation is necessary in obedience to God,

  186. then Sarah's barrenness will be a real problem.

  187. So will Rebecca's in the next generation and Rachel's

  188. in the generation to follow.

  189. In the old covenant that builds from Abraham onwards,

  190. God is focused on Israel as an ethnic people

  191. and therefore the emphasis on marriage and reproduction

  192. is universally the norm.

  193. We get to the law and the law is bound up with children as well.

  194. By the time we get to Exodus chapter 1,

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  195. we read that Israel were fruitful and increased greatly.

  196. They multiplied and increased exceedingly.

  197. They seem to have at least taken that command of God quite seriously.

  198. And then in Deuteronomy 7,

  199. when God is laying out the stipulations of the covenant,

  200. he writes this about the blessing that will befall them

  201. if they're obedient to him.

  202. You shall therefore be careful

  203. to do the commandment and the statutes

  204. and the rules that I command you today.

  205. And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them,

  206. the Lord your God will keep with you

  207. the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers.

  208. He will love you and bless you and multiply you.

  209. He will also bless the fruit of your womb

  210. and the fruit of your ground,

  211. your grain and your wine and your oil,

  212. the increase of your herds

  213. and the young of your flock in the land

  214. that he swore to your fathers to give you.

  215. You shall be blessed above all people.

  216. There shall not be male or female barren among you

  217. or among your livestock.

  218. And then at the end of Deuteronomy,

  219. where this covenant is reiterated,

  220. the curse is the complete opposite.

  221. That if they're disobedient, barrenness will be the punishment.

  222. There's also throughout Deuteronomy,

  223. this concern about inheritance.

  224. That somebody's name will not be blotted out

  225. or cut off from the land.

  226. There's exhaustive stipulations in the law

  227. that people's inheritance,

  228. which is necessitated by offspring,

  229. will not fall into the wrong hands.

  230. So in the year of Jubilee, you get everything back.

  231. If you're a man and you die without male offspring,

  232. you have a Leverite marriage where you marry,

  233. your wife marries your brother.

  234. Failing thought she got a bad deal the first time round.

  235. That's what we see in the book of Ruth that we read from earlier.

  236. That Ruth is a single lady,

  237. a single Moabite lady going back to a foreign people

  238. has very little prospects.

  239. But Boaz, in the end, that great Boaz,

  240. comes forward as the kinsman redeemer

  241. who performs a Leverite marriage,

  242. not to Elimelech's brother,

  243. but to a very near relative.

  244. The law of Moses, when you drill down into the detail,

  245. gives no value or affirmation to singleness.

  246. It's just not there.

  247. Which brings us to David.

  248. God makes a covenant with David,

  249. which again is centered around offspring.

  250. He's promised that he'll have a great name

  251. like the name of great ones of the earth.

  252. But further down, the Lord says,

  253. I will make you a house, a dynasty.

  254. I will raise up your offspring after you

  255. who shall come from your body.

  256. And your house and your kingdom

  257. shall be made sure forever before me.

  258. Your throne shall be established forever.

  259. In the Old Testament,

  260. this is what I'm trying to show,

  261. singleness is not value.

  262. It's not a fact.

  263. It's not a norm.

  264. In fact, as far as I can see,

  265. in the Old Testament,

  266. there were six groups of people

  267. that were single, widows,

  268. but most of them would have got married again.

  269. Eunuchs, a most unenviable position

  270. in ancient Israel,

  271. seen as non-persons,

  272. those that are diseased.

  273. Those with a divine call,

  274. the people like Jeremiah,

  275. in Jeremiah 16,

  276. is told not to marry,

  277. as a visual metaphor

  278. for how Israel has behaved.

  279. The divorce,

  280. the stipulations in Deuteronomy 24,

  281. about grounds for divorce,

  282. and young people

  283. are waiting to be married.

  284. So you get Isaac in Genesis 24,

  285. and Samson in Judges 14,

  286. both waiting for their parents

  287. to arrange a marriage.

  288. Further demonstrates

  289. how undesirable singleness

  290. was as regards the Old Covenant,

  291. and how unusual singleness is

  292. in the Old Testament.

  293. It's not been a greatly encouraging talk so far

  294. if you're single.

  295. But it does get better.

  296. It gets radically different.

  297. And we start to see it in the prophets,

  298. particularly in Isaiah.

  299. There's something very unusual

  300. against the backdrop of negative singleness

  301. being foreshadowed in the prophets.

  302. The winds of change

  303. are blowing through the scriptures

  304. as we move from old to new.

  305. And so we get the fourth servant song,

  306. the one that we love,

  307. the end of Isaiah 52 and 53.

  308. This foreshadowed description

  309. of the Lord Jesus.

  310. Says he was oppressed

  311. and he was afflicted,

  312. yet he did not open his mouth.

  313. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,

  314. and like a sheep

  315. before its shearers is silent,

  316. so he opened not his mouth.

  317. By oppression and judgment

  318. he was taken away.

  319. And who can speak of his descendants?

  320. For he was cut off

  321. out of the land of the living,

  322. stricken for the transgression

  323. of my people.

  324. And they made his grave

  325. with the wicked

  326. and with a rich man in his death.

  327. Although he had done no violence

  328. and there was no deceit in his mouth.

  329. It is clear that this character,

  330. this suffering servant,

  331. dies with no offspring.

  332. Who can speak of his descendants?

  333. No one.

  334. He was cut off that Hebrew idiom

  335. about not having anyone

  336. to carry on his name.

  337. Yet towards the end of the psalm,

  338. in verse 10,

  339. something remarkable happens.

  340. He has put him to grief.

  341. Yet it was the will of the Lord

  342. to crush him.

  343. He has put him to grief.

  344. When his soul makes an offering for guilt,

  345. he shall see his offspring,

  346. he shall prolong his days.

  347. The will of the Lord

  348. shall prosper in his hands.

  349. We have a servant who dies

  350. without any natural offspring.

  351. And yet once he's made atonement for sin,

  352. he has offspring that he sees

  353. and is satisfied by.

  354. We have a figure in the future

  355. who will be single

  356. and yet have offspring.

  357. What sort of offspring will they be?

  358. Well, remarkable offspring.

  359. A very different kind of offspring

  360. because in Isaiah 54,

  361. we have the song of a barren woman

  362. and this is what she sings.

  363. Sing, O barren one,

  364. who did not bear,

  365. break forth into singing

  366. and cry aloud,

  367. you who have not been in labor.

  368. For the children of the desolate one

  369. will be more than the children

  370. of her who is married.

  371. Says the Lord,

  372. enlarge the place of your tent

  373. and let the curtains

  374. of your habitations

  375. be stretched out.

  376. Why?

  377. Because there's lots more offspring.

  378. You need to upsize.

  379. This little barren woman is told,

  380. do not hold back,

  381. lengthen your cords

  382. and strengthen your stakes.

  383. For you will spread abroad

  384. to the right and to the left

  385. and your offspring

  386. will possess the nations

  387. and will be people

  388. and will people

  389. the desolate cities.

  390. We get a servant who dies alone

  391. and yet has offspring.

  392. We have a barren woman

  393. who has no descendants

  394. and yet sings rejoicingly

  395. over new offspring.

  396. Just to make it even better

  397. in Isaiah 56,

  398. once this servant has come,

  399. for thus says the Lord

  400. and let the eunuch complain,

  401. I am only a dry tree.

  402. And let no eunuch complain,

  403. I am only a dry tree.

  404. To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbath,

  405. who choose the things that please me

  406. and hold fast my covenant,

  407. I will give in my house

  408. and within my walls

  409. a monument and a name

  410. better than sons and daughters.

  411. I will give them an everlasting name

  412. that shall not be cut off.

  413. So the eunuch,

  414. because of this servant,

  415. is now welcomed in God's temple,

  416. will have a everlasting name

  417. that won't be cut off

  418. and have a name greater

  419. than sons and daughters.

  420. Just to bring it full circle,

  421. in Isaiah 56,

  422. the foreigner has many children

  423. and a great name

  424. and a wonderful inheritance.

  425. So through the old,

  426. so though the old covenant

  427. centers around ethnic Israel,

  428. is marked by offspring

  429. and therefore makes marriage implicit

  430. and singleness cursed,

  431. the picture in the prophets,

  432. particularly Isaiah,

  433. offers new hope

  434. and stands in stark contrast.

  435. Suddenly singleness is reinterpreted

  436. and the covenant revolves

  437. around a different kind of access.

  438. Not a physical access,

  439. but a spiritual access.

  440. Not about being Abraham's descendants

  441. by race,

  442. but God's spiritual offspring

  443. by grace.

  444. By trusting the sufficient seed,

  445. the serpent crushing son,

  446. the obedient servant

  447. and the forever king,

  448. Jesus Christ.

  449. Jesus Christ.

  450. Suddenly it is not about

  451. your human birth

  452. or pedigree

  453. or credentials.

  454. It's not about

  455. whether you're married or not.

  456. The sole way

  457. life now finds worth

  458. is not about

  459. whether you were born

  460. or birthed your own children.

  461. It's whether you were born from above

  462. and regenerated by the Spirit.

  463. Which forms a backdrop

  464. to our New Testament.

  465. And in the New Testament,

  466. singleness is not only viable,

  467. but affirmed.

  468. It's not only an option for some,

  469. it is a venerated pursuit for many.

  470. John the Baptist,

  471. the Apostle Paul,

  472. some of the disciples,

  473. and Jesus himself

  474. are all single.

  475. If Jesus,

  476. the most complete human being

  477. who ever lived,

  478. was single,

  479. then that is a stunning endorsement

  480. as to the value of that status

  481. now in the New Covenant.

  482. If the Apostle Paul,

  483. the most prolific writer

  484. of the New Testament

  485. and pioneering church planter

  486. of the known world,

  487. was single,

  488. then we have to say

  489. that things are markedly different

  490. in the now present kingdom of God.

  491. If John the Baptist,

  492. who is described by Jesus

  493. as the greatest of all men

  494. born of woman,

  495. if he were single,

  496. we must see that there's

  497. a markedly different

  498. way of life

  499. at the inauguration

  500. of God's kingdom.

  501. Jesus says only two things

  502. explicitly about singleness

  503. and neither of them

  504. are addressing the subject

  505. head on.

  506. Both of them are in debates

  507. with people trying to trap him.

  508. So in Matthew 19,

  509. as the Pharisees

  510. try to trap Jesus,

  511. he states that Moses

  512. condescended to give them divorce

  513. in the law

  514. because of their hardness of heart.

  515. It then says,

  516. the disciples on the back of that

  517. where Jesus says

  518. that marriage is to be

  519. honored and obeyed,

  520. the disciples say,

  521. if such is the case

  522. of a man with his wife,

  523. it is better not to marry.

  524. But Jesus said to them,

  525. not everyone can receive

  526. this saying,

  527. but only those

  528. to whom it is given,

  529. for there are eunuchs

  530. who have been made

  531. so from birth.

  532. There are eunuchs

  533. who have been made eunuchs

  534. by men.

  535. And there are eunuchs

  536. who have made themselves eunuchs

  537. for the sake

  538. of the kingdom of heaven.

  539. Let the one who is able

  540. to receive this

  541. receive it.

  542. It's quite tricky

  543. to know exactly

  544. what Jesus is saying there

  545. and many people

  546. have taken those teachings

  547. badly to their detriment

  548. in church history.

  549. But over and against

  550. the negative connotations

  551. of being a eunuch,

  552. what Jesus says

  553. is suggesting

  554. that in his kingdom

  555. there is credit,

  556. viability,

  557. and blessing

  558. to not being married.

  559. There is credit

  560. in being a eunuch

  561. for the sake

  562. of the kingdom.

  563. There is advantage

  564. to some

  565. and the kingdom

  566. as a whole

  567. in some

  568. remaining single

  569. for spiritual

  570. reasons.

  571. The second reference

  572. is in Matthew 22

  573. where this time

  574. Jesus is trying

  575. to be trapped

  576. by the Sadducees

  577. with the riddle

  578. about the seven brothers

  579. who all end up

  580. marrying the same woman

  581. and he's then asked

  582. well whose wife

  583. will she be

  584. in the resurrection.

  585. And Jesus says

  586. you are wrong

  587. because you know

  588. neither the scriptures

  589. nor the power of God

  590. for in the resurrection

  591. they neither marry

  592. nor are given

  593. in marriage

  594. but are like

  595. the angels of heaven.

  596. So Jesus seems

  597. to be saying

  598. that in the

  599. consummated kingdom

  600. in resurrection life

  601. singleness

  602. will be the universal

  603. state and marriage

  604. is a reality

  605. in this life only.

  606. This again

  607. seems to diminish

  608. the necessity,

  609. importance

  610. and eternal value

  611. of marriage

  612. and in fact

  613. frames union

  614. between husband

  615. and wife

  616. as a transitory

  617. reality.

  618. These assertions

  619. are further elaborated

  620. on by the Apostle Paul

  621. in 1 Corinthians 7

  622. which is a great text

  623. to go to

  624. as we think

  625. about singleness.

  626. In 1 Corinthians 7

  627. it's important

  628. to remember

  629. the context

  630. of Corinth

  631. that this is a

  632. very licentious people

  633. that seem to be

  634. going a bit wild.

  635. So we don't want

  636. to make sweeping

  637. generalizations

  638. but at least

  639. seven times

  640. in one chapter

  641. Paul places

  642. singleness

  643. alongside marriage

  644. and frames them

  645. both as good gifts

  646. from a good God.

  647. Paul also seems

  648. if you read

  649. the whole chapter

  650. to commend singleness

  651. at times

  652. above marriage.

  653. He seems to show

  654. bias towards

  655. being single.

  656. Many times

  657. he says

  658. I wish you were

  659. all single

  660. as I am

  661. which is a

  662. stunning thing

  663. against all

  664. that we've read

  665. in the Old Covenant

  666. and against the culture

  667. that Paul

  668. and we

  669. live in.

  670. So in 1 Corinthians 7

  671. at the beginning

  672. it is good for a man

  673. not to marry

  674. but since there is

  675. so much immorality

  676. each man should have

  677. his own wife

  678. and each woman

  679. her own husband.

  680. It is good for a man

  681. not to marry.

  682. I'm sure they would have

  683. read that chapter

  684. several times

  685. as they thought

  686. about it.

  687. He says in 1 Corinthians

  688. 7 7

  689. I wish that all of you

  690. were as I am

  691. single

  692. but each of you

  693. has your own

  694. gift from God.

  695. One has this gift

  696. another has that.

  697. gift there is about

  698. the status

  699. not the ability.

  700. So he's not talking

  701. about the ability

  702. to be singleness

  703. as a gift

  704. he's saying

  705. singleness

  706. is a gift

  707. both

  708. ordained from the

  709. hand of a good God.

  710. 1 Corinthians 7

    1 Corinthians 7:8

  711. verse 8

  712. Now to be unmarried

  713. now to the unmarried

  714. and the widows

  715. I say it is good

  716. for them to stay

  717. unmarried

  718. as I do

  719. but if they cannot

  720. control themselves

  721. they should marry

  722. for it is better

  723. to marry

  724. than to burn

  725. with passion

  726. but later on

  727. in the chapter

  728. are you unmarried?

  729. Do not look for a wife

  730. verse 28

  731. those who marry

  732. will face many

  733. troubles in this life

  734. and I want to

  735. spare you this

  736. I look back

  737. on

  738. my

  739. single life

  740. I didn't have

  741. iron shirts

  742. but life was

  743. quite simple

  744. now with

  745. marriage

  746. and

  747. two people's

  748. point of views

  749. having to be taken in

  750. and decision making

  751. one car

  752. that needs to be

  753. juggled around

  754. lifts here and there

  755. can't just get away

  756. with a microwave meal

  757. for one anymore

  758. that definitely needs

  759. to feed two people

  760. life is more

  761. complicated

  762. I wouldn't say

  763. it's many troubles

  764. and I'd be disappointed

  765. if Aileen heard the recording

  766. and I didn't set that

  767. straight

  768. but life is certainly

  769. more complicated

  770. 1 Corinthians 7

  771. 32 to 35

  772. it makes quite a

  773. long winded argument

  774. which paraphrased

  775. that

  776. married person

  777. has complex

  778. and compromised

  779. affections

  780. whereas someone

  781. who is single

  782. can live

  783. in a right way

  784. with undivided

  785. devotion to the

  786. Lord

  787. 1 Corinthians 7

  788. 39

  789. a woman is bound

  790. to her husband

  791. as long as she

  792. lives

  793. but if her husband

  794. dies she is free

  795. to marry anyone

  796. she wishes

  797. but he must belong

  798. to the Lord

  799. in my judgment

  800. she is

  801. happier

  802. if she stays

  803. as she is

  804. that is

  805. now single

  806. there's no getting

  807. away from the truth

  808. that in the New Testament

  809. singleness is no

  810. longer cursed

  811. but seemingly

  812. blessed

  813. and greatly

  814. blessed

  815. in the New Testament

  816. the expectancy

  817. of procreation

  818. is diminished

  819. and the now

  820. spiritual family

  821. birthed in the Lord

  822. Jesus is a whole

  823. different thing

  824. it revolves around

  825. a whole different

  826. axis

  827. it has a totally

  828. different value

  829. system

  830. a totally

  831. reconstructed

  832. relational matrix

  833. and a covenantal

  834. contract

  835. that supersedes

  836. the need

  837. to procreate

  838. and have progeny

  839. that it seems

  840. that now

  841. in Jesus

  842. is reframed

  843. and what was

  844. formerly true

  845. is now

  846. obsolete

  847. conscious that

  848. that is quite

  849. a long winded

  850. way of addressing

  851. the subject

  852. but I think

  853. there is value

  854. in showing us

  855. that things

  856. are now new

  857. in the kingdom

  858. of Jesus Christ

  859. things are

  860. radically different

  861. from how they were

  862. as weight

  863. to the revolution

  864. in relationships

  865. that Jesus

  866. inaugurates

  867. where a singleness

  868. was a tragedy

  869. in the old covenant

  870. it has the potential

  871. for great blessing

  872. and eternal fruit

  873. for the acquisition

  874. of a great name

  875. and to do great good

  876. and bear great fruit

  877. for the Lord

  878. in the new covenant

  879. so to finish

  880. I want to say

  881. a few things

  882. that are practical

  883. and hopefully

  884. helpful on the back

  885. of what we've

  886. been looking at

  887. the first is this

  888. I think it is

  889. good if we are

  890. all conscious

  891. of the struggles

  892. faced by single

  893. people

  894. you can't get away

  895. from what Paul says

  896. in 1 Corinthians 7

  897. that if you are

  898. burning with passion

  899. it is good

  900. to be married

  901. that there is

  902. real

  903. real urges

  904. real desires

  905. within us

  906. to have a

  907. companion

  908. to have

  909. a partner

  910. even though

  911. Paul says

  912. singleness is

  913. viable

  914. and valued

  915. he still says

  916. there is real

  917. struggles

  918. the struggle

  919. of loneliness

  920. to not have

  921. that special

  922. someone

  923. to wake

  924. up alone

  925. every day

  926. it is hard

  927. that is

  928. I am sure

  929. a real struggle

  930. for many

  931. and therefore

  932. it is important

  933. for all of us

  934. to be

  935. open

  936. to walking

  937. closely

  938. with single

  939. people

  940. to making

  941. sure that

  942. they are

  943. involved

  944. in life

  945. to involve

  946. them in our

  947. family lives

  948. that if

  949. as Jesus

  950. inaugurates

  951. churches

  952. a totally

  953. different

  954. kettle

  955. of fish

  956. then it is

  957. important

  958. that we

  959. reframe

  960. the way

  961. we think

  962. about each

  963. other

  964. and particularly

  965. look out

  966. for those

  967. that are

  968. single

  969. if what

  970. Paul is

  971. saying

  972. and Jesus

  973. is saying

  974. about singleness

  975. is true

  976. the great

  977. struggle

  978. would be

  979. sexual

  980. immorality

  981. and again

  982. that is

  983. going to be

  984. overcome

  985. by having

  986. good

  987. friends

  988. by having

  989. people

  990. invited

  991. into their

  992. lives

  993. so there

  994. can be

  995. accountability

  996. it is

  997. the same

  998. for everyone

  999. sexual

  1000. immorality

  1001. is not

  1002. a problem

  1003. for the

  1004. single

  1005. alone

  1006. but it is

  1007. only going

  1008. to be

  1009. overcome

  1010. if we

  1011. support

  1012. each other

  1013. and encourage

  1014. one another

  1015. amidst our

  1016. sex obsessed

  1017. culture

  1018. that is ready

  1019. to trip

  1020. us up

  1021. and snare

  1022. us at

  1023. every

  1024. opportunity

  1025. with

  1026. singleness

  1027. I think

  1028. comes very

  1029. real struggle

  1030. but very

  1031. real struggle

  1032. if we can

  1033. forge great

  1034. relationships

  1035. that we

  1036. can certainly

  1037. bear each

  1038. other's

  1039. burdens

  1040. and help

  1041. each other

  1042. through

  1043. secondly I

  1044. think there's

  1045. very real

  1046. dangers

  1047. that we

  1048. do live

  1049. in a culture

  1050. where the

  1051. dream of

  1052. young boys

  1053. and girls

  1054. is to go

  1055. through life

  1056. to find that

  1057. someone to

  1058. have that

  1059. big wedding

  1060. day to

  1061. have 2.4

  1062. children

  1063. although how

  1064. you manage

  1065. 0.4 I'm

  1066. not sure

  1067. so there's

  1068. a real

  1069. danger

  1070. if our

  1071. lives as

  1072. Christians

  1073. don't play

  1074. out in the

  1075. way that

  1076. culture says

  1077. we should

  1078. for bitterness

  1079. to grow

  1080. for resentment

  1081. to grow

  1082. for frustration

  1083. to take

  1084. over

  1085. and for us

  1086. to doubt

  1087. that God

  1088. knows what

  1089. he's doing

  1090. and he's

  1091. somehow given

  1092. a second

  1093. best

  1094. therefore we've

  1095. got to

  1096. affirm each

  1097. other in

  1098. our status

  1099. and help

  1100. each other

  1101. through when

  1102. those things

  1103. are rearing

  1104. their ugly

  1105. head

  1106. we don't

  1107. allow bitterness

  1108. to grow

  1109. into gangrene

  1110. and then

  1111. become detrimental

  1112. to our

  1113. health

  1114. and relationship

  1115. with the

  1116. Lord Jesus

  1117. there's also

  1118. a real danger

  1119. that we form

  1120. for ourselves

  1121. functional

  1122. saviors

  1123. that if I am

  1124. a single

  1125. person who

  1126. longs to be

  1127. married

  1128. then my

  1129. functional hell

  1130. is to remain

  1131. single for the

  1132. rest of my

  1133. life and

  1134. therefore I'll

  1135. create for

  1136. myself a

  1137. functional saviour

  1138. which will be

  1139. somebody to

  1140. lift me out

  1141. of that

  1142. functional hell

  1143. and the

  1144. problem is

  1145. the minute we

  1146. frame it like

  1147. that it's

  1148. destined to

  1149. all go wrong

  1150. because there's

  1151. only one proper

  1152. saviour and his

  1153. name is Jesus

  1154. and if we have

  1155. all of our

  1156. identity tied

  1157. up in what

  1158. anybody else

  1159. can do for

  1160. us we'll

  1161. always be

  1162. disappointed

  1163. and we'll

  1164. always be

  1165. let down

  1166. you can do

  1167. that with

  1168. anything

  1169. if your

  1170. functional hell

  1171. is driving to

  1172. work in a

  1173. clapped out

  1174. car then your

  1175. functional saviour

  1176. will be a

  1177. new car

  1178. and then when

  1179. that rusts and

  1180. needs to go to

  1181. the mechanic

  1182. you'll be

  1183. crushed

  1184. so there's

  1185. real dangers

  1186. in singleness

  1187. but I think

  1188. there's real

  1189. opportunity

  1190. Paul is very

  1191. clear in 1

  1192. Corinthians 7

  1193. that singleness

  1194. offers the

  1195. opportunity for

  1196. undivided devotion

  1197. to the Lord

  1198. great opportunity

  1199. great opportunity

  1200. to serve the

  1201. Lord to be

  1202. all out for

  1203. Jesus without

  1204. a compromise

  1205. diary

  1206. a great

  1207. opportunity to

  1208. put on display

  1209. to a watching

  1210. world that

  1211. actually Jesus

  1212. is all I

  1213. need

  1214. and that I

  1215. find my

  1216. identity in

  1217. him and I'm

  1218. complete in

  1219. my relationship

  1220. with him

  1221. it's an

  1222. opportunity to

  1223. trust God

  1224. it's an

  1225. opportunity to

  1226. trust God if

  1227. you're married

  1228. or single

  1229. Paul says

  1230. both the

  1231. gifts of God

  1232. and therefore we

  1233. can be content

  1234. and we need

  1235. to strive to

  1236. be content

  1237. in whatever

  1238. our marital

  1239. status is in

  1240. the season

  1241. that we're

  1242. in

  1243. if we can

  1244. even if

  1245. we're single

  1246. be complete

  1247. in Christ

  1248. then that is

  1249. going to be

  1250. the best

  1251. foundation

  1252. if God

  1253. in his

  1254. sovereignty

  1255. bring someone

  1256. along for

  1257. us to share

  1258. our lives

  1259. intimately

  1260. with

  1261. it's a real

  1262. challenge

  1263. a real

  1264. challenge

  1265. as I

  1266. already said

  1267. about the

  1268. plausibility

  1269. of church

  1270. as a real

  1271. family

  1272. not just a

  1273. buzzword

  1274. that we

  1275. throw out

  1276. to make us

  1277. all feel

  1278. warm and

  1279. fuzzy

  1280. but there

  1281. is plausibility

  1282. to that idea

  1283. there is

  1284. tangibility

  1285. that people

  1286. don't just

  1287. silo our

  1288. family life

  1289. that yes

  1290. we gather

  1291. for church

  1292. and then it's

  1293. all the

  1294. children in

  1295. the car

  1296. and off

  1297. we go

  1298. compartmentalize

  1299. that part

  1300. of our

  1301. lives

  1302. but who

  1303. can we

  1304. invite in

  1305. who can we

  1306. journey through

  1307. life closely

  1308. with

  1309. who are the

  1310. people that

  1311. we befriend

  1312. and invest

  1313. in

  1314. even though

  1315. they're not

  1316. blood

  1317. relatives

  1318. I think we

  1319. also see

  1320. in the

  1321. challenge in

  1322. the New

  1323. Testament

  1324. so many

  1325. people are

  1326. referred to

  1327. as spiritual

  1328. sons and

  1329. daughters

  1330. Paul talks

  1331. about

  1332. Timothy

  1333. and Titus

  1334. and

  1335. Anesimus

  1336. as spiritual

  1337. sons in

  1338. the faith

  1339. he writes

  1340. in Romans

  1341. 16 about

  1342. Rufus'

  1343. mother

  1344. and how

  1345. he is

  1346. his mother

  1347. how she

  1348. is Rufus'

  1349. mother

  1350. and his

  1351. just think

  1352. about being

  1353. the spiritual

  1354. mother of

  1355. the apostle

  1356. Paul

  1357. how proud

  1358. would you

  1359. be

  1360. and so

  1361. whereas in

  1362. the old

  1363. covenant

  1364. the idea

  1365. was to

  1366. be fruitful

  1367. and multiply

  1368. physically

  1369. what does

  1370. Jesus tell

  1371. us in

  1372. the New

  1373. Testament

  1374. go

  1375. and make

  1376. disciples

  1377. make

  1378. spiritual

  1379. sons and

  1380. daughters

  1381. now there's

  1382. no reason

  1383. that your

  1384. physical

  1385. sons and

  1386. daughters

  1387. can't also

  1388. be your

  1389. spiritual

  1390. sons and

  1391. daughters

  1392. as you

  1393. live out

  1394. the life

  1395. of faith

  1396. before them

  1397. and invest

  1398. and point

  1399. them to

  1400. Jesus

  1401. all the

  1402. time

  1403. but let's

  1404. be clear

  1405. in the

  1406. realm of

  1407. eternity

  1408. the only

  1409. thing worth

  1410. anything

  1411. is

  1412. spiritual

  1413. sons and

  1414. daughters

  1415. spiritual

  1416. brothers and

  1417. sisters

  1418. through faith

  1419. in Jesus

  1420. Christ

  1421. and we

  1422. come into

  1423. land with

  1424. this and I

  1425. think it's a

  1426. helpful place

  1427. to land

  1428. there's real

  1429. hope

  1430. because whether

  1431. you're married

  1432. in this life

  1433. or not

  1434. whether you

  1435. have that

  1436. big wedding

  1437. day with

  1438. the big

  1439. dress

  1440. feeding loads

  1441. of people

  1442. that most

  1443. of whom you

  1444. don't even

  1445. know

  1446. whether you

  1447. have that

  1448. or not

  1449. there is

  1450. the great

  1451. hope in

  1452. Jesus that

  1453. everyone will

  1454. be present

  1455. at

  1456. participate

  1457. in

  1458. and be

  1459. central to

  1460. a wedding

  1461. which will

  1462. blow all

  1463. other weddings

  1464. out of the

  1465. water

  1466. revelation

    Revelation 19:6

  1467. 19

  1468. verse 6

  1469. then I

  1470. heard what

  1471. seemed to

  1472. be the

  1473. voice of

  1474. a great

  1475. multitude

  1476. like the

  1477. roar of

  1478. many waters

  1479. and like the

  1480. sound of

  1481. mighty peals

  1482. of thunder

  1483. crying out

  1484. hallelujah

  1485. for the

  1486. Lord our

  1487. God

  1488. the almighty

  1489. reigns

  1490. let us

  1491. rejoice

  1492. and exult

  1493. and give

  1494. him the

  1495. glory

  1496. for the

  1497. marriage

  1498. of the

  1499. lamb

  1500. has come

  1501. and his

  1502. bride

  1503. has made

  1504. herself

  1505. ready

  1506. it was

  1507. granted her

  1508. to clothe

  1509. herself

  1510. with pure

  1511. linen

  1512. bright and

  1513. pure

  1514. for the

  1515. fine linen

  1516. is the

  1517. righteous

  1518. deeds

  1519. of the

  1520. saints

  1521. and the

  1522. angel

  1523. said to

  1524. me

  1525. write

  1526. this

  1527. blessed

  1528. are

  1529. those

  1530. who

  1531. were

  1532. invited

  1533. to the

  1534. marriage

  1535. supper

  1536. of the

  1537. lamb

  1538. and he

  1539. said to

  1540. me

  1541. these

  1542. words

  1543. these

  1544. are the

  1545. true

  1546. words

  1547. of

  1548. God

  1549. that's

  1550. where

  1551. we're

  1552. all

  1553. heading

  1554. to

  1555. that

  1556. wedding

  1557. day

  1558. where

  1559. we

  1560. are

  1561. not

  1562. only

  1563. invited

  1564. but

  1565. also

  1566. involved

  1567. and so

  1568. all

  1569. other

  1570. marriages

  1571. are just

  1572. a foreshadowing

  1573. and a

  1574. warm up

  1575. act

  1576. for that

  1577. day

  1578. so

  1579. whether

  1580. you

  1581. have

  1582. one

  1583. or

  1584. not

  1585. in

  1586. the

  1587. light

  1588. of

  1589. eternity

  1590. it

  1591. will

  1592. not

  1593. matter

  1594. let

  1595. me

  1596. pray

  1597. father

  1598. god

  1599. thank you

  1600. that

  1601. jesus

  1602. makes

  1603. everything

  1604. different

  1605. that

  1606. he

  1607. makes

  1608. everything

  1609. new

  1610. that

  1611. he

  1612. brings

  1613. sure

  1614. and

  1615. certain

  1616. hope

  1617. father

  1618. that

  1619. it

  1620. means

  1621. that

  1622. in

  1623. him

  1624. we

  1625. truly

  1626. are

  1627. family

  1628. and

  1629. because

  1630. that

  1631. is

  1632. true

  1633. no

  1634. one's

  1635. missing

  1636. out

  1637. father

  1638. no

  1639. one's

  1640. getting

  1641. second

  1642. best

  1643. but

  1644. lord

  1645. if

  1646. we

  1647. have

  1648. jesus

  1649. we

  1650. have

  1651. all

  1652. that

  1653. we

  1654. need

  1655. father

  1656. thank

  1657. you

  1658. that

  1659. you

  1660. bless

  1661. us

  1662. in

  1663. an

  1664. innumerate

  1665. number

  1666. of

  1667. ways

  1668. father

  1669. you

  1670. give

  1671. us

  1672. each

  1673. other

  1674. father

  1675. you

  1676. give

  1677. us

  1678. every

  1679. good

  1680. and

  1681. perfect

  1682. thing

  1683. so

  1684. at

  1685. the

  1686. end

  1687. of

  1688. this

  1689. day

  1690. no

  1691. matter

  1692. where

  1693. we

  1694. find

  1695. ourselves

  1696. the

  1697. status

  1698. we're

  1699. occupying

  1700. at

  1701. present

  1702. father

  1703. we

  1704. want

  1705. to

  1706. say

  1707. that

  1708. we

  1709. trust

  1710. you

  1711. father

  1712. we

  1713. love

  1714. you

  1715. and

  1716. that

  1717. our

  1718. heartfelt

  1719. cry

  1720. is

  1721. that

  1722. you

  1723. would

  1724. have

  1725. your

  1726. way

  1727. with

  1728. us

  1729. lord

  1730. whatever

  1731. you

  1732. planned

  1733. and

  1734. chosen

  1735. we

  1736. want

  1737. to

  1738. sign

  1739. up

  1740. to

  1741. that

  1742. and

  1743. say

  1744. that

  1745. is

  1746. call

  1747. with

  1748. us

  1749. and

  1750. father

  1751. that

  1752. you

  1753. would

  1754. take

  1755. us

  1756. and

  1757. bring

  1758. glory

  1759. to

  1760. your

  1761. name

  1762. through

  1763. whatever

  1764. we

  1765. do

  1766. whoever

  1767. we're

  1768. with

  1769. whatever

  1770. that

  1771. looks

  1772. like

  1773. father

  1774. may

  1775. Jesus

  1776. be

  1777. our

  1778. all

  1779. in

  1780. all

  1781. and

  1782. everything

  1783. else

  1784. be

  1785. framed

  1786. in

  1787. light

  1788. of

  1789. that

  1790. father

  1791. bless

  1792. us

  1793. and

  1794. help

  1795. us

  1796. to

  1797. be

  1798. church

  1799. father

  1800. bless

  1801. us

  1802. and

  1803. help

  1804. us

  1805. to

  1806. love

  1807. you

  1808. most

  1809. we

  1810. pray

  1811. this

  1812. in

  1813. Jesus

  1814. name

  1815. who

  1816. is

  1817. our

  1818. ultimate

  1819. who

  1820. is

  1821. the

  1822. one

  1823. who's

  1824. loved

  1825. us

  1826. more

  1827. than

  1828. we

  1829. could

  1830. ever

  1831. imagine

  1832. and

  1833. the

  1834. one

  1835. in

  1836. whom

  1837. we

  1838. find

  1839. all

  1840. our

  1841. completeness

  1842. and

  1843. all

  1844. of

  1845. our

  1846. joy

  1847. Amen
