  1. And with that marvelous prayer in our hearts and on our lips,

  2. just pause for a moment in quietness as we come to God's Word.

  3. Let's pray.

  4. Lord, we thank you for your Word, which is living, active, and powerful,

  5. and which comes with promise that as it goes out, it will not return to you empty.

  6. Lord, so the words that we've sung is the prayer of our hearts.

  7. We pray that you would touch us and from this moment change us.

  8. And so may the words of my mouth and the meditations of all our hearts

  9. be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer.

  10. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. Well, we come this morning, as John's already mentioned,

  13. to the fifth of our series in the book of Hebrews.

  14. I'm aware that people can preach on the book of Hebrews for a very long time,

  15. period of years.

  16. And we're cracking through it fairly quickly.

  17. Part 5 brings us up to the end of chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5.

  18. Just a quick review as we dig in to orient ourselves.

  19. This letter of Hebrews is an anonymous letter written, it seems,

  20. to a group of Jewish Christians who are now in danger of losing their faith.

  21. In fact, they think they have lost something in becoming Christians.

  22. And the burden of the letter to the Hebrew Christians is to urge them to understand

  23. they haven't lost something.

  24. They're in danger of losing something for the thing that they have gained.

  25. And what have they gained?

  26. In a word, it's Jesus.

  27. And so the first two chapters are all about Jesus.

  28. The first chapter, that Jesus is the Son of God,

  29. the exact representation of the divine being, fully God, in fact.

  30. And as the writer moves into chapter 2,

  31. he demonstrates that this one who is the exact representation of God

  32. is also fully human.

  33. In fact, one who is our brother,

  34. and he is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters.

  35. So fully God and fully man.

  36. Having set out who the Son of God is,

  37. the writer then talks a bit about who the people of God are

  38. in chapters 3 and 4,

  39. and takes them back in time to the experience of the Israelites

  40. in the Exodus, the ones who left Egypt with Moses

  41. to enter the promised land in chapter 3,

  42. but the ones who, even who entered it in chapter 4 under Joshua,

  43. didn't find rest, which still remains.

  44. And the passage last week, as John brought it to us,

  45. finished on a bit of an ominous note,

  46. as we'll see in just a moment.

  47. But it's that well-known set of verses.

  48. The Word of God is alive and active.

  49. It pierces the soul.

  50. It reveals all.

  51. Nothing is hidden from it.

  52. And that just strikes a note that something heavy is coming.

  53. In fact, something heavy is coming.

  54. But the passage that we're at this morning

  55. just presses the pause button briefly

  56. as the writer sets out the argument in a very compressed way,

  57. which is going to sustain the next chapters of the letter

  58. right through to the end of Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  59. So when we get a few weeks down the line to Hebrews 10,

  60. maybe we'll hear an echo of things we've heard already.

  61. In fact, as we come to this passage today,

  62. we're already hearing echoes of things we've heard before,

  63. a very carefully unfolded argument by this writer.

  64. Well, last week, John noted that there was a key word

  65. that ran through the passage in chapter 4

  66. about, what, eight or so times.

  67. The word rest just kept coming up again and again.

  68. And as we read our passage this morning,

  69. something similar happens,

  70. something that crops up five times.

  71. In fact, I'd say five and a half times.

  72. You can work out which the half is as we read it.

  73. So let's read together.

  74. Hebrews chapter 4, beginning at verse 14

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  75. through to chapter 5, verse 10.

  76. So we pick it up at the end of chapter 4

  77. with this sense that the people who left Egypt

  78. didn't enter the promised land,

  79. and the people who entered the promised land

  80. didn't really find rest.

  81. Nothing in creation is hidden from God's sight.

  82. Everything is uncovered and laid bare

  83. before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

  84. Boom, boom, boom.

  85. But just before the hammer falls,

  86. we have this.

  87. Therefore, since we have a great high priest

  88. who has gone through the heavens,

  89. Jesus, the Son of God,

  90. let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

  91. For we do not have a high priest

  92. who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  93. but we have one who has been tempted in every way

  94. just as we are,

  95. yet was without sin.

  96. Let us then approach the throne of grace

  97. with confidence

  98. so that we may receive mercy

  99. and find grace

  100. to help us in our time of need.

  101. Every high priest

  102. is selected from among men

  103. and is appointed to represent them

  104. in matters related to God

  105. to offer gifts

  106. and sacrifices for sins.

  107. He is able to deal gently

  108. with those who are ignorant

  109. and are going astray

  110. since he himself

  111. is subject to weakness.

  112. This is why

  113. he has to offer sacrifices

  114. for his own sins

  115. as well as for the sins of the people.

  116. No one takes this honor upon himself.

  117. He must be called by God

  118. just as Aaron was.

  119. So Christ also

  120. did not take upon himself

  121. the glory of becoming a high priest.

  122. But God said to him,

  123. You are my son.

  124. Today I have become your father.

  125. And he says in another place,

  126. You are a priest forever

  127. in the order of Melchizedek.

  128. During the days of Jesus' life on earth,

  129. he offered up prayers and petitions

  130. with loud cries and tears

  131. to the one who could save him from death.

  132. And he was heard

  133. because of his reverent submission.

  134. Although he was a son,

  135. he learned obedience

  136. from what he suffered.

  137. And once made perfect,

  138. he became the source of eternal salvation

  139. for all who obey him

  140. and was designated by God

  141. to be a high priest

  142. in the order of Melchizedek.

  143. There's our passage.

  144. And it has, I'm guessing,

  145. some unfamiliar things in it

  146. as well as some quite familiar things.

  147. I wonder if you picked out

  148. today's key term.

  149. High priest.

  150. Did you pick out the half?

  151. A priest.

  152. Well, I'll hold a sharp crew this morning.

  153. This is really building my confidence.

  154. Yes, this is all about the high priest.

  155. Now, why a high priest?

  156. Why a priest?

  157. And we need to spend

  158. some of our time this morning

  159. just thinking about what it is

  160. that makes this the thing

  161. that the writer goes to

  162. in order to encourage these Christians

  163. as they face this temptation

  164. to turn away.

  165. Well, the passage clearly divides

  166. into three chunks,

  167. three paragraphs,

  168. and we'll take them in turn,

  169. starting first with

  170. the end of chapter 4,

  171. the verses that Neil read to us

  172. before our prayer together,

  173. in which we think about

  174. the high priest and prayer.

  175. Second, in verses 1 through 5

  176. of chapter 5,

  177. we think of 1 through 4, rather,

  178. the high priest and the people.

  179. And thirdly, the rest of chapter 5,

  180. the high priest and perfection.

  181. So the high priest in relation

  182. to each of these three focuses,

  183. prayer, people, and perfection.

  184. So we begin with the high priest

  185. and prayer.

  186. Well, as we've noted already,

  187. the previous section

  188. ended on this ominous note,

  189. something you're going to have

  190. to give account.

  191. And there's a clear note

  192. of warning there.

  193. This aspect of God's word

  194. as being something living,

  195. powerful, active.

  196. There is more that's going

  197. to strike fear to come.

  198. But first, there's this note

  199. of encouragement.

  200. Quite appropriate that it was read

  201. before our prayers,

  202. because it is an invitation

  203. to prayer,

  204. an encouragement.

  205. And in fact,

  206. in one sense,

  207. if we're used to a sort of

  208. standard sermon pattern

  209. where we get our stuff,

  210. and then at the end

  211. you get the application,

  212. well, this passage

  213. has the application front-loaded.

  214. It's here in these first few verses

  215. that we get some instructions,

  216. some encouragement

  217. about what we are to do.

  218. The book of Hebrews

  219. does have some clear commands.

  220. The first one comes in chapter 3,

  221. as we've seen already.

  222. Consider Jesus.

  223. And there's several more commands

  224. in chapter 3.

  225. And then they sort of disappear.

  226. Sort of, they do disappear.

  227. The next time we see commands

  228. is in chapter 7, in fact,

  229. and then through the rest

  230. of the letter.

  231. So here, the instructions we have

  232. don't come by way of command.

  233. They come by way of encouragement.

  234. Now, I hope you've picked up

  235. that language

  236. of how the writer to the Hebrews

  237. is together with these people

  238. in this.

  239. And so there's two

  240. specific instructions

  241. he gives.

  242. Let us hold firmly

  243. and let us

  244. approach the throne of grace.

  245. Let us do this.

  246. We have a great high priest.

  247. Let us hold firmly.

  248. We have a priest

  249. who is able to empathize

  250. with our weakness,

  251. and so on.

  252. We're in this together.

  253. But it's not just about believers

  254. being in this together.

  255. Christians are those

  256. who have this,

  257. as the writer introduces him here,

  258. great high priest.

  259. I mean, a high priest

  260. is pretty great.

  261. But you don't normally say

  262. the great high priest.

  263. It's built into the high priest bit.

  264. The word's a little bit

  265. like our word archbishop,

  266. in fact.

  267. Bishop, yeah, that's okay.

  268. Archbishop.

  269. That's pretty special.

  270. And it's one word.

  271. Same in Greek.

  272. Priest is one word.

  273. But here we have

  274. an archpriest.

  275. Archierus.

  276. And that's what we have in mind.

  277. But this is a great high priest.

  278. And

  279. these verses are just amazing.

  280. As you pause and ponder them,

  281. we have in them

  282. the whole of the argument

  283. of the opening part

  284. of the book,

  285. in fact.

  286. Here we have Jesus,

  287. who is the Son of God,

  288. the exact representation

  289. of the divine image,

  290. who's passed through the heavens.

  291. He's ascended to the heavens.

  292. It's pretty special

  293. for a high priest.

  294. But he's not only the one

  295. who, like chapter 1 of Hebrews,

  296. is the Son of God

  297. and divine,

  298. but he is the one

  299. who sympathizes

  300. with us in our weaknesses,

  301. who's been tempted

  302. in every way

  303. as we are.

  304. He's one of us too.

  305. There's Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  306. And there's an encouragement

  307. then to

  308. heed this,

  309. to hold it,

  310. and to approach,

  311. which is essentially

  312. what we have

  313. in chapters 3 and 4.

  314. And in fact,

  315. we've heard something

  316. of these words before.

  317. There was a trailer

  318. for this already

  319. in the end

  320. of Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  321. For this reason,

  322. the writer says,

  323. he, that's Jesus,

  324. had to be made like them,

  325. fully human

  326. in every way,

  327. in order that he might

  328. become a merciful

  329. and faithful

  330. high priest.

  331. That's the first time

  332. we see it in the letter.

  333. In service to God,

  334. that he might make atonement

  335. for the sins of the people.

  336. Because he himself

  337. suffered when he was tempted,

  338. he is able to help those

  339. who are being tempted.

  340. So no ordinary

  341. high priest.

  342. And the two

  343. specific pieces

  344. of encouragement

  345. or exhortation,

  346. a little bit like coach,

  347. come on,

  348. let's do it,

  349. come in these two

  350. injunctions,

  351. specific pieces

  352. of encouragement

  353. that the writer

  354. has given.

  355. And we'll just take

  356. a moment to reflect

  357. on each of those.

  358. First,

  359. let us,

  360. because we have

  361. someone who's ascended

  362. into the heavens

  363. as our high priest,

  364. let's hold firmly

  365. to the faith

  366. we profess.

  367. Well, hold firmly

  368. here is a pretty

  369. strong word.

  370. It's the sort of word

  371. you'd use if you want

  372. to lay hold

  373. of something,

  374. seize it.

  375. It's a word

  376. that could be used

  377. in context

  378. of arrest,

  379. to take someone

  380. under custody.

  381. And as one of the

  382. older commentators

  383. puts it,

  384. we have in this

  385. encouragement

  386. to hold on

  387. something that gives

  388. an indication

  389. of danger

  390. as well

  391. as an incitement

  392. to effort.

  393. word.

  394. That note we heard

  395. as we went

  396. from the living

  397. and active word,

  398. and we'll all

  399. have to give account,

  400. there's still some

  401. urgency in the air.

  402. As this writer says,

  403. hold on.

  404. It's not

  405. just a sort of calm.

  406. All right then,

  407. everybody,

  408. you know,

  409. like taking your

  410. primary two class

  411. on an outing.

  412. Hold on to the room.

  413. It's not,

  414. well, you do want

  415. them to hold on

  416. tightly, don't you?

  417. You don't want

  418. everyone going astray.

  419. But this is cling on.

  420. You're at risk.

  421. Hang on.

  422. And what are they

  423. to hold on to?

  424. Well,

  425. the NIV

  426. slightly unpacks

  427. it for us already.

  428. Let us hold firmly

  429. to the faith

  430. we profess.

  431. What it simply says

  432. is let's hold fast,

  433. as some of the

  434. older translations

  435. put it,

  436. our confession.

  437. Let's hold fast

  438. our profession.

  439. That is something

  440. that we say.

  441. There's something

  442. about our speech

  443. here.

  444. And what is this?

  445. Is it confession

  446. in the sense

  447. of what we did

  448. together at the

  449. beginning of our

  450. service?

  451. We confess our sins.

  452. No, it's not

  453. quite that

  454. in the book of Hebrews.

  455. Or is confession

  456. the other thing

  457. that we sometimes

  458. say as a set

  459. of doctrines

  460. or beliefs,

  461. you know,

  462. like the Westminster

  463. Confession

  464. or the

  465. Belgic Confession

  466. or whatever

  467. confession that

  468. might be

  469. that summarizes

  470. our beliefs.

  471. And it's not

  472. quite the way

  473. Hebrews uses

  474. the term either.

  475. What our writer

  476. has in mind,

  477. and we know this

  478. because he uses

  479. the term repeatedly

  480. throughout the

  481. letter,

  482. is Jesus

  483. himself.

  484. He is the one

  485. that we confess

  486. and profess.

  487. And the clearest

  488. place we see this

  489. comes actually

  490. towards the end

  491. of the letter

  492. in Hebrews 13.

  493. Through Jesus,

  494. therefore,

  495. let us continually

  496. offer to God

  497. a sacrifice

  498. of praise,

  499. the fruit

  500. of lips

  501. that openly

  502. profess,

  503. it's the same

  504. word as we have

  505. here,

  506. his name,

  507. that is,

  508. the name of Jesus.

  509. And it's quite

  510. striking that the

  511. thing then that

  512. they have to cling

  513. to desperately

  514. is a profession,

  515. a statement.

  516. It's the speaking

  517. of the name

  518. of Jesus

  519. that, in fact,

  520. is part of their

  521. worship and then

  522. infuses and orients

  523. the whole of their

  524. lives.

  525. So that's the first

  526. encouragement to hold

  527. firmly the faith

  528. we profess

  529. that our confession,

  530. that confession

  531. being Jesus

  532. himself.

  533. But the second

  534. thing is what

  535. we've done already

  536. this morning

  537. in verse 16.

  538. Let us approach

  539. God's throne of grace

  540. with confidence

  541. so that we may

  542. receive mercy

  543. and find grace

  544. to help in time

  545. of need.

  546. Well, if the

  547. encouragement to

  548. hold fast

  549. comes off the

  550. back of noting

  551. that Jesus is the

  552. one who's passed

  553. through the heavens,

  554. this encouragement

  555. here to approach

  556. with confidence

  557. comes off the

  558. back of noting

  559. that he's just

  560. like us,

  561. again like

  562. Hebrews chapters

  563. one and two.

  564. he's been tempted

  565. it says in every

  566. way as we are.

  567. Well, what's in

  568. mind with this

  569. temptation?

  570. And I don't think

  571. it's so much to do

  572. with the temptation

  573. to sin,

  574. to do wrong,

  575. although in a sense

  576. that it is about

  577. that.

  578. There's something

  579. else that's worrying

  580. these Jewish

  581. believers.

  582. Their fear

  583. seems to be

  584. that their sin

  585. is separating

  586. them from God

  587. and they have

  588. no priest.

  589. They've got no

  590. priest,

  591. they've got no

  592. sacrifice.

  593. They've got no

  594. sacrifice,

  595. they've got

  596. no forgiveness.

  597. And if they've

  598. got no forgiveness,

  599. they're separated

  600. from God.

  601. If that's

  602. the temptation

  603. and the temptation

  604. is to

  605. avoid somehow

  606. the salvation

  607. that's offered

  608. in Jesus

  609. and to return

  610. to some other

  611. kind of salvation,

  612. the words

  613. of the writer

  614. here are a bit

  615. interesting because

  616. we don't leave

  617. speech behind.

  618. If we were

  619. writing this,

  620. we might go on

  621. to sacrifice

  622. now that Jesus

  623. laid down his

  624. life for us.

  625. It's not,

  626. in fact,

  627. where the writer

  628. goes.

  629. The writer

  630. invites us,

  631. encourages us,

  632. exhorts us,

  633. urges us

  634. to approach

  635. with confidence.

  636. And if our

  637. previous

  638. exhortation

  639. had this

  640. hint of

  641. danger in

  642. it,

  643. this word

  644. has a

  645. strong sense

  646. of courage

  647. to come

  648. boldly

  649. into God's

  650. presence,

  651. to find

  652. grace to

  653. help us

  654. in our time

  655. of need.

  656. I mean,

  657. it's interesting

  658. that the

  659. ancient Jewish

  660. writers applied

  661. this kind of

  662. boldness to

  663. Abraham.

  664. Now,

  665. you remember

  666. the father

  667. Abraham,

  668. the old

  669. patriarch.

  670. Mark,

  671. for instance,

  672. in Genesis

  673. 15,

  674. one of the

  675. times when

  676. the Lord

  677. comes and

  678. speaks to

  679. Abraham and

  680. says,

  681. I'm your

  682. very great

  683. reward.

  684. And Abraham

  685. says,

  686. that's fine,

  687. but I don't

  688. have any

  689. offspring.

  690. And he's

  691. received that

  692. promise.

  693. He would have

  694. offspring.

  695. So what's it

  696. about?

  697. Or at the

  698. time before,

  699. the destruction

  700. of Sodom and

  701. Gomorrah,

  702. where Abraham

  703. intercedes for

  704. the righteous

  705. of the city.

  706. And ancient

  707. Jewish commentators

  708. had a sense

  709. that this is

  710. what it is to

  711. come boldly

  712. into God's

  713. presence,

  714. reverently,

  715. deferently,

  716. knowing the

  717. promise of

  718. God.

  719. And even if

  720. we come in

  721. our perplexity

  722. about how

  723. that promise

  724. is going to

  725. be realized

  726. in our lives

  727. and situations.

  728. And so this

  729. writer says,

  730. because we

  731. have this

  732. kind of high

  733. priest who

  734. knows what

  735. it is to

  736. be tempted,

  737. we come

  738. boldly,

  739. with courage

  740. into God's

  741. presence,

  742. to his

  743. throne of

  744. grace,

  745. so that we

  746. may find

  747. help in

  748. our time

  749. of need.

  750. So there's

  751. a reverent

  752. prayer in

  753. response to

  754. Jesus'

  755. high priesthood

  756. and what he

  757. has done,

  758. and the

  759. fear that

  760. will be

  761. separated from

  762. God, in

  763. fact,

  764. melts away

  765. in responding

  766. to what

  767. Jesus has

  768. done and

  769. approaching

  770. boldly.

  771. Well, that's

  772. the high

  773. priest and

  774. prayer.

  775. But as we

  776. move into

  777. the letter,

  778. we come to

  779. the high

  780. priest and

  781. the people.

  782. Having set

  783. out that this

  784. is who Jesus

  785. is, trailed

  786. it in chapter

  787. two, now

  788. starting to

  789. unpack it at

  790. the end of

  791. chapter four,

  792. chapter five,

  793. our writer

  794. stops and

  795. says,

  796. right, okay,

  797. we know what

  798. a high priest

  799. is like.

  800. This is what

  801. a high priest

  802. is.

  803. And we have

  804. to, at this

  805. point, try to

  806. imagine ourselves

  807. into the,

  808. if we can,

  809. lives, minds,

  810. orientation,

  811. world of

  812. first century

  813. Jewish Christians

  814. whose lives

  815. and yearning

  816. for God

  817. have brought

  818. them to

  819. Christ,

  820. the one

  821. who has

  822. fulfilled

  823. the promises

  824. and worship

  825. of the Old

  826. Testament,

  827. but now

  828. they're missing

  829. something.

  830. So, some

  831. of these

  832. longings come

  833. out in these

  834. verses in

  835. chapter five,

  836. verses one

  837. to four.

  838. And we

  839. might ask

  840. ourselves,

  841. why a priest?

  842. Why a high

  843. priest?

  844. What's good

  845. about a high

  846. priest that

  847. might be

  848. something of

  849. my yearning

  850. or even

  851. a temptation

  852. for me?

  853. And here

  854. we get

  855. something of

  856. the context

  857. in that.

  858. Of course,

  859. it's very

  860. brief, but

  861. it just

  862. hits the

  863. sort of

  864. top

  865. checklist

  866. of things

  867. that this

  868. is what

  869. we want

  870. in a high

  871. priest.

  872. priest.

  873. A little

  874. bit of

  875. background.

  876. The Old

  877. Testament has

  878. essentially

  879. three intermediary

  880. figures,

  881. three individuals

  882. who, by

  883. nature of

  884. their role

  885. or their

  886. office,

  887. stood in

  888. some way

  889. between God

  890. and the

  891. people,

  892. and the

  893. well-known

  894. tree of

  895. prophet,

  896. priest,

  897. and king.

  898. Of course,

  899. the prophet,

  900. if you can

  901. imagine it

  902. this way,

  903. is one

  904. who, with

  905. God at

  906. his back,

  907. speaks God's

  908. words to

  909. the people.

  910. The priest

  911. turns around,

  912. stands and

  913. serves before

  914. God, bringing

  915. the people

  916. safely into

  917. God's

  918. presence.

  919. And the

  920. king, in

  921. some way,

  922. stands between

  923. at the very

  924. connecting point

  925. of God and

  926. people, making

  927. possible, in

  928. some ways, that

  929. connection between

  930. God and

  931. people.

  932. And the

  933. letter to the

  934. Hebrews has

  935. something to

  936. say about

  937. each of those

  938. three kinds

  939. of intermediaries.

  940. One who

  941. comes between

  942. and manages

  943. the connection

  944. between.

  945. But by far

  946. the way,

  947. looming largest

  948. of all by

  949. far, is the

  950. priest, which

  951. mightn't be the

  952. one most of

  953. us go to.

  954. Perhaps for

  955. some, it

  956. would be.

  957. For others, I

  958. don't think so.

  959. But essentially,

  960. what does a

  961. priest do?

  962. There's a number

  963. of things.

  964. If you look

  965. through the

  966. different passages

  967. in the Old

  968. Testament that

  969. teach about the

  970. priesthood, but

  971. I'd say, at

  972. bottom, fundamentally,

  973. what a priest

  974. does is this.

  975. A priest brings

  976. the people

  977. safely into the

  978. presence of God

  979. because, frankly,

  980. the presence of

  981. God, the Holy

  982. God, is a scary

  983. place to be.

  984. And if you

  985. show up there

  986. improperly,

  987. arriving,

  988. impure,

  989. not fit to be

  990. in that presence,

  991. it's not good.

  992. And that's what

  993. the priest does.

  994. The priest is

  995. that one who

  996. is able to

  997. bring the people

  998. safely and

  999. rightly fit

  1000. into God's

  1001. presence.

  1002. And we see

  1003. some of this

  1004. as Aaron

  1005. becomes the

  1006. first great

  1007. high priest

  1008. of Israel.

  1009. So in

  1010. Leviticus 9

  1011. and 10, we

  1012. see some

  1013. of this

  1014. story.

  1015. Moses says

  1016. to Aaron,

  1017. come to the

  1018. altar and

  1019. sacrifice your

  1020. sin offering

  1021. and your

  1022. burnt offering

  1023. and make

  1024. atonement for

  1025. yourself and

  1026. the people.

  1027. For yourself

  1028. and the

  1029. people.

  1030. Yourself

  1031. and the

  1032. people.

  1033. Sacrifice the

  1034. offering that

  1035. is for the

  1036. people.

  1037. Make atonement

  1038. for them as

  1039. the Lord

  1040. has commanded.

  1041. That's what

  1042. the priest is

  1043. there to do,

  1044. to bring the

  1045. people safely

  1046. into the

  1047. presence of

  1048. God.

  1049. Because what

  1050. happens if

  1051. you or I

  1052. or somebody

  1053. else tries to

  1054. pull this

  1055. off?

  1056. Well, a few

  1057. chapters later

  1058. in Leviticus,

  1059. this is what

  1060. happens.

  1061. This is the

  1062. warning.

  1063. Any Israelite

  1064. or foreigner

  1065. residing among

  1066. them who offers

  1067. a burnt offering

  1068. or a sacrifice

  1069. and does not

  1070. bring it to

  1071. the entrance

  1072. of the tent

  1073. of the meeting

  1074. where the

  1075. priest waits,

  1076. to sacrifice

  1077. it to the

  1078. Lord,

  1079. must be

  1080. cut off

  1081. from the

  1082. people of

  1083. Israel.

  1084. It's a bit

  1085. of an irony,

  1086. isn't it?

  1087. That's your

  1088. yearning.

  1089. You want to

  1090. be in God's

  1091. presence.

  1092. You bring

  1093. your offering.

  1094. Can't be

  1095. bothered waiting

  1096. for the priest.

  1097. But no,

  1098. don't do that.

  1099. Because if you

  1100. approach God

  1101. improperly,

  1102. you're cut

  1103. off.

  1104. And the very

  1105. thing you might

  1106. have wanted

  1107. is the thing

  1108. you've lost.

  1109. Well, if we

  1110. trace the story

  1111. of the priesthood

  1112. through the Old

  1113. Testament, it's

  1114. not a pretty

  1115. tale.

  1116. Very quickly

  1117. in Leviticus 10,

  1118. already after the

  1119. appointment, it

  1120. all goes very

  1121. wrong.

  1122. Aaron's sons

  1123. died, killed

  1124. because they

  1125. brought unholy

  1126. fire into the

  1127. Lord's presence.

  1128. And again

  1129. and again,

  1130. whether it's

  1131. the sons of

  1132. Eli, whether

  1133. it's the sons

  1134. of Samuel,

  1135. whether it's

  1136. priests during

  1137. the times of

  1138. the kings of

  1139. Israel, who

  1140. led the kings

  1141. astray and

  1142. were complicit

  1143. in their

  1144. idolatrous

  1145. worship, right

  1146. through to the

  1147. last book of

  1148. the Old

  1149. Testament, as

  1150. we know it,

  1151. Malachi, where

  1152. the priests who

  1153. had a covenant

  1154. with Levi have

  1155. trashed it and

  1156. not maintained

  1157. the people as

  1158. holy.

  1159. well, sort

  1160. of picking on

  1161. priests to say

  1162. that because

  1163. frankly, prophets

  1164. and kings don't

  1165. come off much

  1166. better, nor do

  1167. any of us,

  1168. frankly.

  1169. But it's, I

  1170. think, interesting

  1171. and certainly to

  1172. our writers'

  1173. credit that none

  1174. of that is

  1175. mentioned here in

  1176. these first few

  1177. verses.

  1178. What we have

  1179. here is a

  1180. thumbnail sketch

  1181. of the best high

  1182. priest you could

  1183. imagine.

  1184. every high priest

  1185. selected from

  1186. among the

  1187. people, appointed

  1188. as Aaron was

  1189. to represent the

  1190. people in matters

  1191. related to God.

  1192. It's important to

  1193. remember that the

  1194. priest serves the

  1195. God on behalf of

  1196. the people, to

  1197. offer gifts and

  1198. sacrifices for sins

  1199. just as we've

  1200. seen.

  1201. He's able to deal

  1202. gently with those

  1203. who are ignorant

  1204. and going astray

  1205. since he himself

  1206. is subject to

  1207. weakness, so he

  1208. offers sacrifices for

  1209. sins, his own

  1210. as well as the

  1211. sins of the

  1212. people.

  1213. And no one

  1214. takes this honor

  1215. in himself, but

  1216. receives it when

  1217. called by God, just

  1218. as Aaron was.

1219. And this is such a

  1220. carefully crafted

  1221. appeal to these

  1222. Christians.

  1223. Chapter 3, Moses.

  1224. Jesus better than

  1225. Moses.

  1226. Chapter 4, Joshua.

  1227. You know what?

  1228. Jesus' rest better

  1229. than Joshua's rest.

  1230. Chapter 5, Aaron.

  1231. The three great

  1232. figures of the

  1233. Exodus and

  1234. conquest periods.

  1235. But you know

  1236. what?

  1237. Three for three,

  1238. Jesus is better

  1239. again.

1240. And here we, in a

  1241. sense, have your

  1242. dream come true

  1243. priest, the best

  1244. priest you could

  1245. imagine.

  1246. But here's the

  1247. irony.

  1248. For these Jewish

  1249. believers, looking

  1250. to this priest would

  1251. prevent them from

  1252. looking to Jesus.

  1253. priests.

  1254. The religion, in a

  1255. sense, was getting

  1256. in the way.

  1257. So anxious to have

  1258. a priest, they're in

  1259. danger of losing a

  1260. savior.

  1261. I think there's

  1262. something here to

  1263. give us pause just

1264. before we move to the

  1265. last paragraph, the

  1266. last chunk of our

  1267. passage.

  1268. Is there something

  1269. about our religion

  1270. that gets in the

  1271. way?

  1272. It's certainly the

  1273. case that priests are

  1274. good things.

  1275. They're commanded

  1276. things you couldn't do

  1277. without them, but

  1278. they're not the

  1279. ultimate thing.

  1280. They weren't the

  1281. thing that mattered.

  1282. They were the thing

  1283. that pointed towards

  1284. the one who mattered,

  1285. pointed towards

  1286. Christ.

  1287. And I wonder if

  1288. sometimes in our

  1289. own religious lives,

  1290. we have that sense

1291. that we too look to

  1292. good things, but that

  1293. are not ultimate

  1294. things.

  1295. Whether it's, you

  1296. know, good music and

  1297. fine singing, it

  1298. lifts my spirit, I'm

  1299. fine.

  1300. It's proper rituals

  1301. and liturgy.

1302. If we just get that

  1303. right, we'll be fine.

  1304. If we're under good

  1305. teaching, you know,

  1306. we'll be fine.

  1307. If I can participate

  1308. in outreach and

  1309. social action or

  1310. engage atheists on

  1311. Facebook in the name

  1312. of Jesus, you know,

  1313. I'll be fine.

1314. But all of those good

  1315. things are not

  1316. ultimate things.

  1317. They're not the

  1318. thing.

  1319. They're the things

  1320. that sometimes

  1321. attract our attention,

  1322. though.

  1323. C.S. Lewis, in his

  1324. fascinating little book,

  1325. The Great Divorce,

  1326. through the mouth of

  1327. George MacDonald,

  1328. the Scottish

  1329. fantasist of the

  1330. 19th century,

  1331. says,

  1332. There have been men

  1333. before now who got

  1334. so interested in

  1335. proving the existence

  1336. of God that they

  1337. came to care nothing

  1338. for God himself,

1339. as if the good Lord

  1340. had nothing to do

  1341. but to exist.

  1342. There have been some

  1343. so occupied in

  1344. spreading Christianity

  1345. that they never gave

  1346. a thought to Christ.

  1347. So there's a warning

1348. here as we look at

  1349. these Christians

  1350. yearning for a high

  1351. priest, yearning for

  1352. something external

  1353. to make them okay

  1354. when they needed to

  1355. guard their hearts

  1356. and their minds,

  1357. see what was inside.

  1358. Like the priesthood,

  1359. all these good things

  1360. can displace the

  1361. response to Jesus

1362. and what he calls us

  1363. to, what the gospel

  1364. calls us to.

  1365. We'll see more about

1366. that in just a moment.

  1367. But if we've seen

  1368. something of the high

  1369. priest and prayer,

  1370. the high priest and

  1371. the people,

  1372. finally we come to

  1373. the high priest and

  1374. perfection.

  1375. The writer to the

  1376. Hebrews demonstrates

  1377. that the people's

  1378. high priest,

  1379. the one selected

  1380. from them to offer

  1381. sacrifices for them,

  1382. greater than the

  1383. angels, greater than

  1384. Moses, is also

  1385. greater than Aaron.

  1386. And in these last

  1387. few verses of the

  1388. chapter, of our

  1389. passage, verses 5

  1390. through 10, we see

  1391. a little bit about

  1392. how Jesus' high

  1393. priesthood, it's

  1394. like Aaron's, it's

  1395. recognizable.

  1396. They're cousins, if you

  1397. like, not the same.

  1398. There's something

  1399. different about Jesus'

  1400. high priesthood.

  1401. And what is that?

1402. Well, we see it, first

1403. of all, in these two

  1404. quotations that were

  1405. given.

1406. We see how the writer

  1407. of the Hebrews is

  1408. constantly appealing to

  1409. Old Testament

  1410. scriptures to make his

  1411. point.

  1412. Christ didn't take on

  1413. himself the glory of

  1414. becoming a high priest,

  1415. as Aaron didn't

  1416. arrogate the role to

  1417. himself.

1418. But God said to him,

  1419. quoting Psalm 2,

1420. you are my son, today

  1421. I've become your

  1422. father.

  1423. Which is interesting.

  1424. It's not really about

  1425. the priesthood.

  1426. And we've heard this

  1427. before.

  1428. We heard this already

  1429. right at the beginning

  1430. of chapter 1, quoting

  1431. Psalm 2.

1432. What it shows us is

1433. that there is a priest

1434. who isn't of the line

  1435. of Aaron.

  1436. This isn't one of

  1437. Aaron's later sons.

1438. This is the son of God.

  1439. And the next passage

1440. we have quoted, he says

1441. in another place, this is

  1442. Psalm 110, you are a

  1443. priest, there's our half,

1444. a priest forever in the

  1445. order of Melchizedek.

  1446. Melchizedek, strange name,

1447. which we'll come to hear

1448. more of in weeks to come,

1449. picked up again in verse

  1450. 10.

1451. And again in chapter 7,

1452. so if our first quote

1453. points us back in the

  1454. book, our next quote

1455. points us forward in the

  1456. book.

1457. And in both of us, they

  1458. show we don't have a

  1459. priest who's like Aaron.

  1460. We have a priest who's

  1461. quite different, in a

  1462. different order.

1463. And then as the writer

1464. goes on to unpack what

  1465. Jesus' high priesthood is

  1466. like, he doesn't mention

  1467. sacrifices at all.

1468. There is a little bit of

  1469. strain in this passage

  1470. between the place of

1471. prayer and the place of

  1472. sacrifice.

  1473. As I mentioned already,

  1474. we'll hear lots more

  1475. about sacrifice in the

  1476. chapters to come.

1477. But that's not where he

  1478. goes at this point.

  1479. This ideal priest, in

  1480. Jesus' life on earth,

  1481. offered up prayers and

  1482. petitions with fervent cries

1483. and tears to the one who

1484. could save him from death,

  1485. and was heard.

  1486. This high priest, his

  1487. prayers were heard because

  1488. of his referent submission.

1489. Well, we don't have set out

1490. here what seems to be going

1491. on in the mind of our

  1492. writer.

1493. There's an echo here of

  1494. Psalm 22.

1495. Now, we know Psalm 22,

1496. probably one of the most

1497. famous texts in the Bible of

  1498. all.

1499. But we know the beginning.

1500. My God, my God, why have you

  1501. forsaken me?

1502. The words that were on Jesus'

1503. lips as he died on the cross.

1504. We don't have those words

  1505. echoed here.

1506. We have the end of that

  1507. psalm echoed.

1508. For he, because as in Psalm 22,

1509. the psalmist is heard and has

1510. delivered, then his word of

  1511. praise goes up.

1512. He has not despised or scorned

1513. the suffering of the afflicted

  1514. one.

1515. He has not hidden his face from

  1516. him, but has listened.

1517. He has heard his cry for help.

1518. So for these Jewish Christians,

1519. another echo of the psalms in

1520. saying what this high priest is

  1521. like.

1522. And it's on this basis that then

1523. Jesus is the one who is made

  1524. perfect.

1525. Not just an ideal high priest,

1526. the sort of best high priest you

1527. could think of, like the best car

1528. you could think of, or the best

1529. kitchen, or the best whatever it

  1530. might be.

1531. It's the perfect high priest.

  1532. He has been perfected.

1533. And we might find that language of

1534. being perfected a bit awkward.

1535. I thought Jesus was perfect.

1536. Well, it's true Jesus was perfect,

1537. but this is very much in the mode of

1538. the way Paul put it in Philippians.

1539. that he became obedient to death,

1540. and therefore God has exalted him.

1541. The same thing at work here in the

1542. reflection from the writer to the

  1543. Hebrews.

1544. Son though he was, he learned

1545. obedience from what he suffered,

1546. and made perfect, became the source

1547. of eternal salvation for all who

  1548. obey him.

1549. And although we started with

1550. application, and what we have set

1551. out now is this reflection on

1552. Jesus the great high priest,

  1553. there is implicit here

1554. something still by way of

  1555. application.

1556. We're not only those who are to

1557. hold fast, cling our confession,

1558. not only ones who are to approach

1559. with confidence and courage the

  1560. throne of grace.

1561. But if we have Jesus as our high

1562. priest, we find in him the source of

1563. eternal salvation for all who obey

  1564. him.

  1565. There is a following.

1566. I've loved the hymns and songs that

1567. we've been singing this morning.

  1568. My chains fell off.

  1569. My was free.

1570. I rose, went forth, and followed

  1571. thee.

1572. It's just what the writer to the

1573. Hebrews has in mind here.

1574. We don't come to Jesus the high

1575. priest and say, right, done,

1576. tick, I've got the perfect high

  1577. priest.

1578. If Jesus is my high priest,

  1579. there's something magnetic and

  1580. compelling that reorients and

1581. reshapes my life to be a follower

  1582. of his.

1583. And it was something these

  1584. Christians knew something about.

1585. They knew what it was to suffer

1586. for the name of Jesus.

1587. But it's something that they were

  1588. in danger of forgetting.

1589. Much, perhaps, as we are.

1590. Well, as we come to an end, a little

  1591. story.

1592. Many years I've carried in my

1593. memory banks the vivid image of a

1594. billboard I used to see around

  1595. Toronto.

1596. I could have described it to you.

1597. In the early 1980s, which is just a

  1598. little while ago now.

1599. As I was reflecting on this passage

1600. today, that billboard, that is pretty

1601. effective advertising, isn't it, kept

  1602. coming back to mind.

1603. Well, this is the internet age,

  1604. isn't it?

1605. So I got help from Mr. Google to see

1606. if I could find it.

  1607. And I did.

  1608. Here it is.

1609. Dare to be a priest like me.

1610. Those billboards, this picture is a

  1611. bit sepia tone.

1612. They were in color, were dotted around

  1613. Toronto.

1614. And what I like to think of as a

  1615. teenage, I won't go there, years.

1616. They were erected by somebody named

1617. Father Sean O'Sullivan, who at the

1618. time was director of vocations for the

1619. Catholic Church in that diocese, the

  1620. Archdiocese of Toronto.

1621. The billboard was a huge success.

  1622. Just dial 977-1100.

1623. You could be a priest today.

1624. The phone rang off the hook.

  1625. They were inundated.

1626. And this is the image that kept coming

1627. to mind as I was thinking about the

1628. high priest in our passage.

1629. And I thought, Father Sean, close, but not

  1630. quite.

1631. There is a sense, of course, in which we're

1632. called to be like Christ.

1633. But if there's anything that our passage is

1634. telling us about, it's that there is one

1635. unique, great high priest who is Jesus, who we

1636. absolutely must have in our lives.

1637. So the slogan needs a tweak.

1638. Dare to have a priest like me.

  1639. That's the simple one-point sermon from

  1640. today's passage.

1641. What that means in terms of prayer and

1642. sacrifice, we'll be spending weeks working

  1643. out.

1644. But dare to have a priest like me.

  1645. Let's pray.

1646. Just in the quiet of this moment, we've

1647. seen a high priest who is perfect, who's

1648. gone into the heavens and yet has suffered

1649. temptations in every way as we have.

1650. So let's take a moment to do what we've been

1651. encouraged to do, to approach the throne of

  1652. grace with confidence.

1653. Perhaps there are some here this morning who

  1654. really have gone astray.

1655. As the law of the priests in the Old Testament

1656. put it, you've sinned with a high hand.

  1657. Come to Jesus.

1658. Have a priest like him.

1659. Come to the throne of grace for help in a time

  1660. of need.

1661. Perhaps you've been living a life of comfort,

1662. simply ignoring the things on the inside in

1663. favor of the things on the outside.

  1664. There's a law for that too.

1665. It's called sins of ignorance.

  1666. They needed a sacrifice.

  1667. They needed a priest.

1668. Lord, if we're comfortable, disturb us and

1669. bring us on our knees boldly to your throne

  1670. of grace.

1671. Perhaps there are some here who've had a

1672. longing for God, for the one who made them,

1673. but not found a way to have fellowship and

  1674. communion with that God.

1675. Well, there is only one great high priest to

  1676. make that possible.

1677. Perhaps this morning you need to come to him,

1678. find in the Lord Jesus Christ, the great high

1679. priest, who is not ashamed to call us

  1680. brothers and sisters.

1681. So we thank you, our Heavenly Father, for a

  1682. priest like Jesus.

1683. Thank you that he is our great high priest.

1684. Help us now to be those who find in him the

1685. source of salvation and those who follow him

  1686. in obedience.

1687. For your great namesake we pray.

  1688. Amen.
