  1. Well, good morning. Good to see you this morning. That's a great, great, great, great song.

  2. Love that song. Just that last chorus. Some super things to be able to sing from the heart, I hope.

  3. It's just such great truth. One of the great things about visiting other churches,

  4. you get some really innovative ways of doing your announcements.

  5. So I'm going to take some thoughts back with me to the Corubbers this morning

  6. and see if I can change my clothes and make all the intimations the way you guys did here this morning.

  7. Okay, great. Hebrews chapter 5. If you turn to Hebrews chapter 5, you're in a series here in Hebrews.

Hebrews 5 chapter mention Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  8. I want to thank John for giving me what could be perhaps one of the most difficult passages in the Bible

  9. to preach through and for being so generous and giving me 30 minutes to do it.

  10. Okay, so we need to move. Okay. We need to really move.

  11. I think John popped onto the Corubbers website at some point and found out that it took me,

  12. I think, three 45-minute messages to get through probably just a bit of this section.

  13. So we are going to have to work through here. It's a great book, isn't it?

  14. You guys have been in Hebrews now. I assume for a while it is a great epistle of the New Testament.

  15. One of, I think, one of the most incredible, what is Hebrews?

  16. In its essence, what is Hebrews?

  17. I think it has to be one of the most incredible expositions of the greatness of Jesus anywhere in the Bible, isn't it?

  18. You probably have gotten some background on this.

  19. You'll know by now, I'm sure, that there are different ideas and different approaches to the book of Hebrews.

  20. I think it's important to study hard before you even get into Hebrews

  21. because I think that depending on your view of the audience,

  22. we're not quite sure who wrote the letter,

  23. but depending on who you think the audience of the letter is,

  24. helps you, I think, to understand something of what the writer is saying here

  25. and to interpret some of the really difficult passages

  26. like this one here this morning in the book of Hebrews.

  27. But regardless of what you think about the specifics of the difficult warnings

  28. and those kind of things that come in the book of Hebrews,

  29. it is one of the most incredible expositions of how great Jesus is, isn't it?

  30. I mean, again and again and again and again,

  31. the author just comes back to the greatness of Jesus.

  32. So keep that in mind as you wrangle about some of the specifics.

  33. Keep in mind that overarching in this whole thing is how great Jesus really is.

  34. The letter is written, it seems to me, to a group of people

  35. who are somehow gathering around this great gospel message

  36. of the greatness of who Jesus is and what he's done.

  37. They're gathering around this great message

  38. in some horrendously difficult circumstances.

  39. Things are hard for these people.

  40. That's obvious.

  41. If you just sense and feel the background radiation in the book of Hebrews,

  42. you'll recognize that things are really hard for these guys

  43. and they need to be hugely encouraged to continue to trust in Christ no matter what.

  44. So it's a really good epistle for us, isn't it?

  45. Because times get hard no matter where we're at or who we are.

  46. Life is just a varied mix of highs and lows and good and bad, right?

  47. Ins and outs.

  48. I mean, we're going to get it.

  49. We're studying Job just now at Grubbers.

  50. So, you know, we're in the thick of it.

  51. But life is just like that.

  52. That is what life is like in a fallen world,

  53. in a sinful world, in a broken world.

  54. Life is just hard.

  55. Life is hard.

  56. This isn't all that there is.

  57. This isn't the end of the story,

  58. but this is the here and now.

  59. And we can't avoid the fact that even as followers of Christ,

  60. there are difficult times that come.

  61. And so this is a great epistle for them.

  62. It's a great epistle for us.

  63. It is an exhortational masterpiece.

  64. It is an exhortational masterpiece,

  65. both to believers who need to hang on

  66. and who need to move on in Christ.

  67. But it's also an exhortational masterpiece

  68. to those, I think, who aren't quite there yet.

  69. They're not quite there yet.

  70. Many years ago, I went to Israel

  71. on a short-term missions trip.

  72. And one of the books that we used again and again and again

  73. with Jewish people,

  74. we went down to the kind of holiday resort of Eilat,

  75. down at the very bottom of Israel,

  76. by the border of Egypt.

  77. And we shared the gospel with Jewish people.

  78. And one of the books that we used again and again and again

  79. was the book of Hebrews.

  80. This is an epistle written as well,

  81. I think, to those who aren't quite there yet.

  82. They need to fully trust Christ as the fulfillment.

  83. Listen.

  84. The fulfillment of what the writer says

  85. are all of those shadowy insufficiencies

  86. of the Old Covenant.

  87. They had a purpose.

  88. They were there.

  89. They told a story.

  90. They prepared the world for what was to come.

  91. But they were shadows, the writer says.

  92. You'll get there more as you go on in the book of Hebrews.

  93. They were shadows.

  94. And not only that,

  95. they were shadowy insufficiencies.

  96. They weren't sufficient.

  97. The Old Covenant,

  98. the Old Testament sacrificial system

  99. wasn't sufficient to deal fully and finally with our sins.

  100. Right?

  101. So one of the things that is being exhorted here

  102. is to trust fully in Christ

  103. as the fulfillment of all those shadowy insufficiencies

  104. of the past.

  105. There's a massive contrast here

  106. between those shadowy insufficiencies of the Old Covenant

  107. and the glorious fulfillment

  108. of all those shadows in Christ

  109. in the New Covenant.

  110. And as we get to this passage now

  111. in Hebrews 5,

  112. the end of Hebrews 5 and Hebrews 6,

  113. I think we come again to one of those exhortations.

  114. And it's kind of,

  115. it's a double-edged sword.

  116. The exhortation can be for those of us trusting in Christ

  117. to hang on and to move on

  118. and to not get stuck

  119. and to take all that God has for us,

  120. but it could be an exhortation as well

  121. for those who are not quite there yet.

  122. They know something of who Jesus is.

  123. They've been informed in some way

  124. as to what Jesus has done

  125. to fulfill all those shadowy insufficiencies of the past,

  126. but they've not yet jumped on board.

  127. And so I'm approaching it in that way.

  128. One of these exhortations is maybe one of the most difficult in the book.

  129. Okay?

  130. Folks are being encouraged to move on

  131. beyond the elementary teachings about Christ

  132. and to grow up.

  133. I think you got a growth passage here.

  134. Okay?

  135. And that's the way I'm going to hit it this morning.

  136. To grow up into all the fullness of Christ.

  137. To steal some of Paul's terminology from Colossians.

  138. To grow up into all the fullness of Christ.

  139. What a huge theme of growth there is right through this passage.

  140. So number one here this morning,

  141. admonishing those who are slow to grow.

  142. All right?

  143. I think at the end of chapter 5,

  144. there's an admonishment here

  145. to those who are following Christ,

  146. but they're slow to grow.

  147. All right?

  148. Hebrews 5, verses 11 to 14.

    Hebrews 5:11–14

  149. And it seems to me

  150. that there's a bit of a whooping coming in here.

  151. You know what I mean?

  152. There's a bit of a whooping coming

  153. to the people who are here

  154. who are following Christ,

  155. but they're not quite moving on as they should.

  156. There's a bit of a spanking

  157. that they're going to get here,

  158. and every now and again,

  159. it's good to get one of those.

  160. Okay?

  161. Verse 12.

  162. For though by this time, he says,

  163. you guys have had enough time

  164. to become teachers, he says,

  165. to have moved on to a place

  166. from having been taught things about Christ

  167. and what the Bible has to say

  168. about the Old Testament

  169. and Old Covenant insufficiencies

  170. and the fulfillment of Christ.

  171. You have had enough time now, he says.

  172. And this is a good pastoral thing.

  173. This is a good kind of pastoral place in the epistle.

  174. And I guess it's good for me

  175. to kind of swanee in and swanee out here today

  176. and give you a good whooping

  177. because I don't have to come back next Sunday.

  178. Right? Okay?

  179. So I can do this for John this morning.

  180. Every now and again,

  181. I think as congregations and followers of Christ,

  182. we need a good whooping.

  183. Don't we?

  184. We need to just get whooped into shape

  185. and to be admonished to grow up,

  186. to move on,

  187. to take advantage of everything

  188. the church is offering,

  189. the Spirit is offering,

  190. and to just make the most of the time

  191. God has given us.

  192. You ought to be teachers, he says.

  193. By now.

  194. God plans for his people to grow, doesn't he?

  195. He plans for his people to grow.

  196. What is spiritually alive, listen.

  197. What is spiritually alive grows.

  198. Doesn't it?

  199. Makes sense.

  200. Everything that's alive, by definition, grows.

  201. So what's spiritually alive grows.

  202. If nothing is growing in your body right now,

  203. if nothing is growing in your body right now,

  204. you're not alive.

  205. Okay?

  206. And by the looks of some of you this morning,

  207. okay?

  208. I am told that by the time that I finish this sentence,

  209. over 50 million new cells will have grown in our bodies.

  210. Because that's what happens when you're alive.

  211. Okay?

  212. That's a lot.

  213. That's pretty staggering, isn't it?

  214. But what's true physically is also true spiritually,

  215. according to God.

  216. So that even as your outer man is decaying,

  217. it's growing, but it's dying.

  218. It's a bit of a contradiction, but it's true.

  219. Even as your outer man is decaying,

  220. 2 Corinthians 4.16,

  221. your inner man is what?

  222. It's being renewed day by day.

  223. It's growing.

  224. There is spiritual growth that God designs for you

  225. the moment you enter into fellowship with him.

  226. When you're born again, from that moment on,

  227. God's design for you is to grow.

  228. To live is to grow.

  229. It's what God wants.

  230. Ephesians 4.14-15,

  231. being built up to a mature manhood,

  232. no longer children tossed to and fro by the waves

  233. and carried about by every wind of doctrine,

  234. by human cunning and craftiness of deceitful schemes.

  235. Rather, God wants us to be speaking the truth in love

  236. and to grow up.

  237. He wants us to grow up

  238. in every way into him who is the head,

  239. even Christ.

  240. It's what God expects.

  241. And he provides everything that his people need to grow.

  242. Verse 13, look at it.

  243. He provides everything that we need.

  244. He doesn't just say grow,

  245. go find some food somewhere and grow.

  246. No, he provides spiritually everything we need.

  247. He gives us the food that we need

  248. and the spirit by which that food is incorporated

  249. into our hearts and our lives

  250. and brings about spiritual growth.

  251. I don't know the dynamics necessarily

  252. of how all that happens,

  253. but I know that he gives us all that we need.

  254. Verse 13, there's milk for the infants, right?

  255. There's milk for the infants

  256. and there is solid food for the mature, he says.

  257. God doesn't ram a steak down your throat

  258. if you're still teething.

  259. Okay?

  260. If you're a baby, you get it poured,

  261. the sense is here.

  262. If you're a toddler, you get it mashed.

  263. If you're a teenager, you get it from the chippy.

  264. If you're an adult, you get it medium rare

  265. with peppercorn sauce, right?

  266. I mean, it's just, that is what God gives us.

  267. The nature of it is here.

  268. There's milk.

  269. If you're immature, you get milk first.

  270. That's God wants you to have.

  271. But you don't stay with milk.

  272. You just, you don't.

  273. Nobody just stays.

  274. If you stay with milk, you're not gonna grow

  275. and become strong as God wants you to become strong.

  276. And so God gives us spiritually what we need in his word.

  277. And I've said this many times

  278. as I've gone through this passage

  279. and thought it many times

  280. as I've gone through this passage.

  281. There are many things about the Christian life.

  282. There's so much about the Christian life

  283. that I just so enjoy doing.

  284. I love to share fellowship with God's people.

  285. On a Sunday, it's one of my favorite days of the week.

  286. It's one of my busiest work days, but I love it.

  287. But that's not my spiritual food.

  288. I love to sing, right?

  289. Some great songs, good band.

  290. I love to sing, but that's not my spiritual food.

  291. I love to pray.

  292. Communion with God through the veil that is torn,

  293. that is Christ, that God has made a way for me to do.

  294. That's not my spiritual food.

  295. Specifically in the Bible.

  296. I mean, my spiritual food might be incorporated

  297. in some way there,

  298. but my spiritual food that God has given me

  299. is specifically his word.

  300. And the writer says here

  301. that you need to be trained by it, trained by it.

  302. You have to use it.

  303. You have to exercise with it.

  304. You have to be trained by it

  305. so that you can grow.

  306. And that is exactly what he provides for us in his word.

  307. So that, look at this,

  308. we can grow so that we can help others to grow, right?

  309. Listen, he says, pleading with him,

  310. you ought to be what by now?

  311. Teachers, teachers, I want you to grow

  312. so that you can pass this on.

  313. You got to teach somebody else.

  314. God is going to take his word.

  315. He's going to pour it into your heart.

  316. That happens in Sunday services.

  317. That happens in your Bible studies.

  318. That happens when you open the word of God

  319. in your private devotions.

  320. It happens in loads of places.

  321. The word is the source.

  322. The spirit is the power, the interpreter.

  323. of that.

  324. And by it, God causes us to grow.

  325. But it doesn't stop there.

  326. You don't just become big and fat.

  327. You exercise that in how you serve and teach others.

  328. But he says, you need now someone to teach you

  329. the elementary truths of God's word all over again.

  330. Can you hear his breaking heart?

  331. I want you to be somewhere you're not there.

  332. It's a very pastoral epistle here.

  333. I want you to be somewhere,

  334. and I think every pastor probably feels this about their flock.

  335. The elders feel this way about their flock.

  336. You just want people to be, listen,

  337. I want to be beyond where I know that I am.

  338. I want to be beyond where I know that I am,

  339. and we want our churches to be beyond where we know that they are.

  340. It's breaking his heart.

  341. And that's why we have training and equipping ministries in the church,

  342. isn't it?

  343. Why we encourage people to read their Bibles,

  344. because after we're taught, God wants us to teach.

  345. 2 Timothy 2.2, the things that you've heard from me

  346. in the presence of many witnesses, Paul says to Timothy,

  347. I want you to entrust the faithful men who will then be able to teach others.

  348. Also, there are four generations there.

  349. I've got a photograph at home of my brother's family

  350. with my grandfather, my father, my brother, and my nephew.

  351. Four generations.

  352. And there's four generations here.

  353. It's great.

  354. It's great.

  355. That is what God wants us to do.

  356. It's called discipleship.

  357. Verse 14, to be spiritually discerning,

  358. to distinguish good and evil,

  359. literally to discern what is good and what is not.

  360. So to know God, to know self, to know truth,

  361. to know good, to know evil,

  362. and not just to know it,

  363. but to have our senses trained to discern it.

  364. That's what the word of God does for us.

  365. Spurgeon once said of Bunyan that Bunyan's blood,

  366. he thought, was bibline.

  367. The guy's blood, he said, was bibline.

  368. That means you could cut him anywhere

  369. and he would just bleed Bible verses.

  370. He would just bleed Bible verses.

  371. And I think that is the definition of Christian maturity.

  372. It is when your involuntary responses,

  373. when your involuntary responses are biblical.

  374. That's Christian maturity.

  375. So you don't have to think,

  376. well, I got to go run, find my Bible

  377. to figure out how I respond to this situation.

  378. No, your involuntary responses are biblical.

  379. You just do it.

  380. It's in your blood.

  381. It's okay.

  382. That's kind of the idea here.

  383. Okay, so he's exhorting them not to be slow to grow

  384. because, and here's the second point,

  385. believe it or not, there are those,

  386. there are some who say no to grow.

  387. There are some who say no to grow.

  388. And I think that's the first eight verses here of chapter six.

  389. It's a very tricky passage.

  390. There's loads of different ideas

  391. about what the writer may be saying here.

  392. It's not an easy passage to interpret,

  393. but he's following on in whatever you think.

  394. He is following on directly from what he's just said here

  395. at the end of chapter five

  396. because he starts chapter six with the word therefore.

  397. So he's following on directly in some way

  398. from what he's just said.

  399. Therefore, because it's so crucial

  400. that we grow as those born again in Christ,

  401. because that's true,

  402. because God so wants that for us as his children,

  403. the writer says, let's move beyond.

  404. Let's not just stay with those elementary teachings.

  405. Let's not just stay with the ABCs of the Christian life.

  406. Let's move beyond that.

  407. Let's not get stuck in infancy.

  408. Let's move forward to maturity, he says, verse three.

  409. And this we will do.

  410. As followers of Christ, as believers in Christ,

  411. he says, this we will do.

  412. God's entire intention for us

  413. is through the gospel to be born again.

  414. And then as we're born again as infants,

  415. to feed upon his word and to grow.

  416. That's what God wants.

  417. And this we will do.

  418. We will move on from those elementary principles.

  419. And then he says this, if God permits.

  420. Now, that's a strange thing to say, I think.

  421. And could be a hinge here,

  422. or it could be a hint here in understanding the passage.

  423. I think it is.

  424. It's a strange thing to say, why on earth

  425. would God not permit growth in Christ?

  426. Why would God not permit growth in Christ?

  427. Well, here's what I think he's saying.

  428. I think he's saying that growth in Christ

  429. requires life in Christ.

  430. Okay?

  431. Growth in Christ requires life in Christ.

  432. Does that make sense?

  433. Growth in Christ requires life in Christ.

  434. Could it be that there are people here among this crowd

  435. that he's writing to who are trying to grow in Christ,

  436. but who don't yet have him?

  437. They're trying to grow in Christ.

  438. They hear the exhortations that are coming down

  439. from the writer here, and they're trying to grow in Christ,

  440. but there's a problem with them being able to grow in Christ

  441. because they don't yet have Christ.

  442. I remember a young girl at Corubbers years ago

  443. sharing her story that for years she had come along to church

  444. and she tried to live the Christian life without Christ.

  445. That was her words.

  446. And she said, for years I've been trying to live

  447. the Christian life without Christ.

  448. I've been a part of this kind of Christian community,

  449. and I've been going through all emotions,

  450. but I had never responded to Christ personally.

  451. And I was just, she was killing herself.

  452. She was killing herself.

  453. Can you imagine trying to produce spiritual life

  454. when there's no spiritual life in you?

  455. Can you imagine trying to evidence the fruit of the Spirit?

  456. You know, trying to love, joy, peace, patience, goodness,

  457. kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control,

  458. to do all that without the Spirit?

  459. And you know what?

  460. I think a lot of people do.

  461. I think a lot of people do.

  462. And sometimes the fruit even looks like fruit,

  463. but if you were to grab it and be like one of those pieces

  464. is a Christmas plastic fruit that you see.

  465. You'd bite into it.

  466. It wouldn't be real.

  467. It just looks good, but it's plastic.

  468. Trying to live the Christian life without Christ.

  469. Folks, I think a lot of people do this.

  470. And why would it be any different in the first century?

  471. Especially when many of these folks,

  472. it seems like, had a very good working knowledge

  473. of the Old Covenant, the Old Testament.

  474. But something that I learned,

  475. especially when I went to Israel and talked to these Jews,

  476. is you can't stop there.

  477. That is not the end of the story.

  478. That's only the beginning of the story

  479. and is the preparation for something

  480. that is the fulfillment of all the shadowy insufficiencies.

  481. You can't stop with the shadowy insufficiencies

  482. and expect to grow in Christ

  483. when you haven't embraced Christ.

  484. Okay?

  485. And I think that's what seems to be going on here.

  486. Could it be that some of these Hebrews

  487. are still hanging on to the shadowy insufficiencies

  488. of the Old Covenant,

  489. and the reason why God won't permit further growth

  490. and development spiritually for them

  491. is because some of them don't even have a life

  492. to grow in the first place.

  493. Verse 4.

  494. It's impossible for those who have not watched this,

  495. because here's a tough bit.

  496. It's impossible for those who have been,

  497. once been enlightened.

  498. I want you to think through how,

  499. particularly Paul teaches,

  500. some people think Paul is the author here,

  501. I'm not quite sure.

  502. But I want you to think specifically

  503. of a book like Romans

  504. and how crystal clear Paul is

  505. in the terminology that he uses

  506. when he addresses salvation.

  507. Think about the New Testament

  508. and how crystal clear

  509. the epistle writers are

  510. when they use terminology

  511. to refer to salvation.

  512. And then listen to what he says here.

  513. Who have once been enlightened,

  514. who have tasted the heavenly gift,

  515. who've shared in the Holy Spirit.

  516. Now watch that one.

  517. Who've shared in the Holy Spirit.

  518. I didn't say become temples of the Holy Spirit

  519. or indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

  520. Just shared in the Holy Spirit.

  521. Who've tasted all this,

  522. this is kind of funny terminology.

  523. It's different.

  524. It's different.

  525. Regardless of what you think of it here,

  526. it's different.

  527. Very different.

  528. Tasted the goodness of the Word of God

  529. and the powers of the age.

  530. There's a lot of tasting going on here.

  531. Have you guys ever gone to like

  532. a taste kind of deal with food?

  533. And you're not really eating it,

  534. you're just kind of sampling it?

  535. Okay, you right?

  536. You with me?

  537. Just kind of,

  538. it's a taste session or whatever.

  539. I don't like going to those

  540. because if I really like it,

  541. I want to just kind of gouge myself.

  542. You can't do that.

  543. Taste of the powers of the age has come.

  544. It's impossible for them

  545. who've had that experience

  546. and who have fallen away,

  547. gone back.

  548. It is impossible, he says,

  549. for them to be brought back to repentance

  550. because to their loss,

  551. they're crucifying the Son of God

  552. all over again

  553. and subjecting Him to public disgrace.

  554. So they're being given

  555. all that they need to have

  556. to move on from those shadowy insufficiencies,

  557. but something's not moving on.

  558. They're being given,

  559. these guys I think have been exposed to,

  560. and they've been given all that they need

  561. to move on from the shadowy insufficiency,

  562. but I don't think they yet have.

  563. They've somehow gone back

  564. to the shadowy insufficiency.

  565. So yes, they've been exposed to gospel truth.

  566. They've been enlightened.

  567. I think a lot of people

  568. are exposed to gospel truth

  569. and are enlightened, right?

  570. Every time we share the gospel

  571. with an unbeliever,

  572. they've been enlightened to gospel truth.

  573. They now have heard gospel truth

  574. and we believe that the Holy Spirit

  575. can take that gospel truth,

  576. Romans 1.16,

  577. and that is the power of God

  578. for salvation, the gospel.

  579. But it doesn't mean

  580. that just when they hear the gospel truth,

  581. they're automatically saved.

  582. We know that.

  583. We know we share the gospel

  584. with a lot of people

  585. who aren't automatically saved.

  586. So they've been enlightened.

  587. They now know

  588. what they didn't know before,

  589. and wow, that's a great thing

  590. that we can do for them.

  591. They've been exposed to gospel truth.

  592. Yes, these people here

  593. have tasted the heavenly gift,

  594. just tasted.

  595. Yes, they've shared in the Holy Spirit,

  596. and I suggest they've shared

  597. in the Holy Spirit

  598. in the sense that they've partaken

  599. of his convicting

  600. and illuminating work in their lives.

  601. But that is not the end of the story.

  602. The Bible says

  603. that we have to then believe.

  604. It's not just when the Spirit of God

  605. convicts us that we're saved.

  606. We have to respond to that, don't we?

  607. As many as received him,

  608. John 1.12,

  609. he gave the right

  610. to become children of God.

  611. Not just giving them the truth.

  612. We have to respond

  613. to the truth.

  614. And I could give you

  615. a whole story

  616. about my own life there,

  617. but I don't have time.

  618. Okay?

  619. They've partaken

  620. of the convicting,

  621. illuminating work

  622. of the Spirit in their lives.

  623. If you have a problem

  624. with somebody

  625. sharing in the Holy Spirit

  626. and not being a believer,

  627. be a believer,

  628. then think of Judas Iscariot.

  629. Because as far as I know,

  630. Judas Iscariot,

  631. along with the other 12,

  632. went out when the 12 were sent out

  633. and he had the power

  634. of the Spirit in his life

  635. to do the, you know,

  636. to cast out the demons

  637. and heal people

  638. just like the rest of them did.

  639. And yet we know

  640. that he was a son of perdition.

  641. So the Spirit was there.

  642. You can be a sharer,

  643. I would say,

  644. in the work of the Spirit

  645. in your life,

  646. but not be a believer.

  647. And yes, the writer says here,

  648. they've tasted again

  649. of the goodness

  650. of the Word of God

  651. and the powers

  652. of the coming age.

  653. In fact,

  654. some of these,

  655. some theologians would think,

  656. some of these folks

  657. that are being written to here,

  658. some of them may have even seen

  659. the Lord Jesus Christ in person.

  660. Some of them may have even seen

  661. the Lord Jesus Christ in person.

  662. And if not,

  663. then they've certainly

  664. heard the apostles.

  665. We know that from earlier

  666. chapters of Hebrews.

  667. They've certainly heard

  668. the apostles

  669. and may have even seen

  670. the miraculous works

  671. that the apostles have done

  672. as a taste of the power

  673. of the age to come.

  674. They've seen it,

  675. they've tasted it.

  676. And I think it's what

  677. he's referring to.

  678. However,

  679. what it seems that some of them

  680. haven't done,

  681. and this is why

  682. they can't move on to maturity.

  683. What they haven't done

  684. is they haven't broken away

  685. from the shadows

  686. of the Old Covenant.

  687. They haven't broken away

  688. from the shadows

  689. of the Old Covenant.

  690. And they haven't placed

  691. their faith and trust

  692. fully and completely

  693. in the New Covenant

  694. work of Christ.

  695. That's what he's exhorting

  696. them to do.

  697. You have to do this.

  698. They're fully aware

  699. of the Old Covenant.

  700. He writes to them.

  701. He makes mention

  702. constantly back

  703. to the writings

  704. of the Old Testament.

  705. So they're very familiar.

  706. If they're not Jews,

  707. they're at least familiar

  708. with the Old Covenant.

  709. But that's where

  710. they have stopped.

  711. They've not fully

  712. embraced Christ.

  713. And if that's right,

  714. then all these descriptions

  715. about tasting and sharing

  716. are all demonstrations

  717. of something of the work

  718. of the Spirit of God

  719. and the grace of God

  720. in these people's lives.

  721. Enlightened, tasted, shared.

  722. But he never says

  723. they've believed.

  724. He never says

  725. they believed.

  726. And that has always

  727. bothered me

  728. about this section.

  729. He never says

  730. they've believed.

  731. He never says

  732. that they've been transformed.

  733. He never says

  734. that they've been saved,

  735. delivered.

  736. That's terminology

  737. that the New Testament

  738. uses again and again

  739. and again

  740. with respect to salvation.

  741. On the contrary,

  742. they can't grow in Christ

  743. because they don't have

  744. life in Christ.

  745. Even though they've been

  746. exposed to everything

  747. they need to get it.

  748. Think about that.

  749. I think that's exactly

  750. why then he gives

  751. this illustration

  752. about the land

  753. that comes next

  754. that John read.

  755. That's why I think

  756. he gives the illustration.

  757. Think about it.

  758. The illustration

  759. of the land.

  760. First,

  761. about the land

  762. that drinks in the rain

  763. that often falls on it

  764. and produces a crop.

  765. I think those

  766. are the ones

  767. who have received

  768. the gospel

  769. and now the job

  770. is to drink in the rain

  771. and grow.

  772. Don't be slow to grow.

  773. There are some

  774. that drink in the rain

  775. that falls upon it

  776. and produce a crop.

  777. Useful for whom

  778. it's farmed.

  779. They receive the blessing

  780. of God.

  781. But second,

  782. the land that drinks

  783. the same rain.

  784. The land that drinks

  785. the same rain

  786. but produces thorns

  787. and thistles.

  788. No life.

  789. No evidence of life.

  790. It's worthless

  791. and it is in danger

  792. of being cursed.

  793. Two kinds of ground there,

  794. right?

  795. Regardless of how

  796. you interpret it.

  797. Two kinds of ground.

  798. One that drinks

  799. and produces.

  800. One that drinks

  801. and doesn't produce.

  802. And I think we know

  803. that there are

  804. two kinds of people

  805. in the world.

  806. Sometimes even

  807. in the church.

  808. Those who do move

  809. on to maturity

  810. because they have life

  811. and those who are exposed

  812. to the same grace,

  813. same gospel,

  814. same convicting

  815. and convincing

  816. Holy Spirit

  817. but don't produce

  818. a crop

  819. because they don't

  820. have the life

  821. that it takes

  822. to move on

  823. to maturity.

  824. Having never

  825. gotten beyond

  826. the shadowy

  827. insufficiencies

  828. of the past.

  829. Even though they've

  830. been exposed

  831. to the reality,

  832. the power,

  833. the sufficiency,

  834. the eternal adequacy

  835. of Christ,

  836. they've turned back

  837. to the shadows

  838. and they have forfeited

  839. the grace of God.

  840. I think this happens

  841. in our churches.

  842. I think people come in.

  843. Listen,

  844. everybody that just

  845. comes in through

  846. the doors of the church

  847. isn't automatically

  848. saved, right?

  849. You guys don't have

  850. some special doors.

  851. Do you?

  852. You don't have wool.

  853. If you do,

  854. I want to get a set.

  855. Right?

  856. Your doors aren't special

  857. and as soon as somebody

  858. comes through your door,

  859. they're nice doors,

  860. they're glass doors.

  861. We like the whole deal

  862. that you've done out there

  863. but they're not

  864. the doors that save.

  865. Right?

  866. So people don't come

  867. through the doors

  868. and they say,

  869. people come into this church

  870. and they've got

  871. all kinds of questions

  872. and it's not just

  873. sitting here

  874. like you guys

  875. are sitting here

  876. that makes you

  877. born again,

  878. transformed by

  879. the great power of God.

  880. You may hear it

  881. week after week

  882. after week

  883. but you got to do

  884. something about it.

  885. Right?

  886. You got to do

  887. something about it

  888. and that might be

  889. you this morning.

  890. I don't know all you guys.

  891. That might be you

  892. this morning.

  893. You might have been

  894. coming around

  895. for a long time now

  896. but you may have

  897. never responded.

  898. Hey,

  899. you know,

  900. now's as good

  901. a time as any.

  902. Today is a day

  903. of salvation,

  904. boy.

  905. Now's as good

  906. a time

  907. as ever.

  908. Okay?

  909. And I think

  910. that's why he says

  911. in the very next verse,

  912. verse 9,

  913. that even though

  914. we speak like this,

  915. he says,

  916. dear friends,

  917. this drastic language

  918. and terminology,

  919. we're actually convinced

  920. of better things

  921. in your case.

  922. And now I think

  923. he's speaking again

  924. to those who can grow.

  925. I think the guy,

  926. the writer here,

  927. realizes he's writing

  928. to a group of people

  929. gathered around the gospel

  930. in difficult times.

  931. Some of them

  932. have come to Christ.

  933. Some of them

  934. are really close.

  935. So now he's just saying,

  936. look,

  937. we're moving back

  938. to your case,

  939. those of you

  940. who are trusting in Christ,

  941. the things that do

  942. have to do with salvation.

  943. Isn't that interesting?

  944. I've just talked about,

  945. it seems to me,

  946. he's just saying,

  947. I've just talked about

  948. things that have to do

  949. with those who don't

  950. have salvation.

  951. Now I'm coming back

  952. to talk to you,

  953. those who do have

  954. salvation.

  955. Okay,

  956. if you are trusting

  957. in Christ,

  958. then in your case

  959. it does have to do

  960. with salvation

  961. and you can move on

  962. in Christ.

  963. And that's how

  964. he ends now

  965. in verses 9 to 12.

  966. There are those

  967. he starts off with here

  968. who are slow to grow.

  969. Listen,

  970. don't be there.

  971. Don't stay a baby.

  972. There are those,

  973. believe it or not,

  974. even in the church,

  975. certainly in our world,

  976. who say no to grow.

  977. No.

  978. I'm just going to stay

  979. with my old kind

  980. of works system.

  981. I like that system.

  982. I like the works system.

  983. I like trying

  984. to do my best.

  985. Most of my family

  986. is still there.

  987. They're stuck

  988. in a works system.

  989. I think most of the world,

  990. if you were able

  991. to get to nuts and bolts

  992. with people,

  993. really,

  994. as to whether or not

  995. they think when they die

  996. if there is a heaven

  997. they might go,

  998. I think predominantly

  999. they would say

  1000. that if they are

1001. going to be with God

  1002. in this heavenly place,

  1003. it's because they think

  1004. they've lived a good life.

1005. Most people in our world

  1006. still think that.

  1007. That's clearly not

  1008. what the Bible teaches,

  1009. but most people

  1010. either think that's

  1011. what the Bible teaches

  1012. or that's their own

  1013. philosophy of life.

1014. They just say no to grow.

  1015. They'd rather stick

  1016. with their works salvation.

1017. So those who are slow

  1018. to grow,

1019. those who say no to grow,

  1020. and then finally,

  1021. in verses 9 through 12,

  1022. I would say those

  1023. who actually get up

  1024. and go to grow.

  1025. Sorry about that,

1026. but I had to keep

  1027. the theme going,

  1028. all right?

  1029. But those who actually

1030. get up and go to grow,

1031. those who actually do it,

  1032. boom!

  1033. Come, get out there

  1034. and do it.

1035. And I think that follows,

  1036. this follows something

1037. of the theme of Hebrews

  1038. to me.

  1039. This little passage

  1040. follows,

  1041. I don't want to make

  1042. too much of this,

  1043. but it follows something

  1044. of the big theme

  1045. of Hebrews to me.

1046. Because what do you got

  1047. in Hebrews?

  1048. You've got 10 chapters.

  1049. The first 10 chapters

  1050. of Hebrews

  1051. are this great exposition

  1052. of the majesty

  1053. and supremacy

  1054. and the greatness

  1055. of Christ, right?

1056. He's greater than the apostles,

1057. he's greater than the prophets,

  1058. he's greater than Abraham,

1059. he's greater than the Moab,

  1060. everything, boom.

  1061. He's just greater,

  1062. greater high priest,

  1063. he's got a greater sacrifice,

  1064. he's a greater tabernacle,

  1065. he's just a greater covenant.

  1066. No, it's a,

  1067. chapters 1 to 10.

  1068. There he is!

1069. He presents them with Jesus.

  1070. Now, what does God

1071. want us to do with Jesus?

  1072. Oh, chapter 11.

  1073. It's all about faith.

  1074. Believe it, believe it,

  1075. believe it.

  1076. Like these people did

  1077. who believe,

  1078. some of them conquered

  1079. and went on

  1080. and just great,

1081. other people had to suffer

  1082. but they believed it

  1083. and God called them

1084. to a life that demonstrated

1085. the greatness of who he was

  1086. in their lives.

  1087. So here's Christ,

  1088. chapters 1 to 10.

1089. What does he want you to do?

1090. He wants you to believe it

  1091. and then what happens

  1092. in chapters 12 and 13?

  1093. Run the race.

  1094. Get out there

  1095. and run that race.

1096. Not in your own strength

  1097. but because now

  1098. you've trusted in Christ,

  1099. get out there

  1100. and run the race

  1101. and I think chapters 12 and 13

  1102. of Hebrews

  1103. are those who then

1104. get up and go to grow.

  1105. Get up and grow,

  1106. go to grow.

  1107. God rewarding them,

  1108. look at this

1109. and we're just about finished.

  1110. God rewarding them,

  1111. verse 10,

1112. for their gospel invested life.

  1113. God will not overlook

  1114. if you have come

  1115. to put your faith

  1116. and trust in Christ

  1117. and you are seeking

  1118. to live for him.

  1119. Listen,

1120. none of us will do it perfectly,

  1121. will we?

1122. We all wish we did better

1123. but if you are seeking

1124. to invest your life for Christ,

1125. God will never overlook that.

  1126. He will never overlook

1127. one small little cup of water

1128. that you give to somebody

  1129. in his name.

  1130. Right?

  1131. He'll never overlook it.

1132. So every investment you make

1133. for the sake of the gospel

  1134. in this world,

1135. God will reward you for that.

  1136. He just loves that.

  1137. He loves that.

  1138. Rewarding them

1139. for their gospel invested life.

  1140. Not forgetting your work

1141. and the love that you've shown God

  1142. by doing that.

1143. the love you've shown God

  1144. and his people

1145. to continue to help them.

  1146. Investing your life

  1147. in the things

  1148. that count for eternity.

  1149. And in verse 11,

  1150. being diligent.

  1151. So these are those

  1152. who are moving.

  1153. Get up there.

1154. Get up and go to grow.

  1155. Being diligent

  1156. to the very end,

  1157. he says,

1158. so that what you hope for

  1159. may be realized.

  1160. What a fantastic thought.

  1161. We sit around here,

  1162. you know,

1163. as we become more and more aware

  1164. of who God is

1165. and what God has for us

1166. and the hope of the return of Christ

1167. and all that he's going to bring us

  1168. when he comes back

  1169. and transforms us completely

  1170. into his likeness.

1171. All that we hope for

1172. as we often feel the weight

  1173. of the brokenness

  1174. of our own life

1175. and all that we hope for

  1176. to be realized.

  1177. Oh man,

1178. what a thought that is here

  1179. that he gives us.

  1180. Hope that is seen,

1181. Paul says in Romans 8,

  1182. is not hope.

1183. So there's going to be

  1184. an element of this

1185. that you have to just

  1186. trust God for.

  1187. Hope that is seen

  1188. is not hope.

  1189. But if we hope

1190. for what we do not see,

  1191. then with perseverance,

  1192. watch this now,

  1193. with perseverance,

1194. we diligently wait for it.

1195. How do you diligently wait

  1196. with perseverance?

  1197. How do you wait?

  1198. Perseverance isn't waiting,

  1199. is it?

1200. You want to get out there

  1201. and do something,

  1202. but no,

  1203. there's a sense in which

1204. we have to be doing something

  1205. while we wait.

  1206. Okay,

  1207. that's the idea.

  1208. Investing your time

  1209. in the waiting room.

  1210. Investing your time

  1211. in the waiting room.

1212. Jesus talks in Matthew 19,

  1213. 29 about everyone

  1214. who's given up houses,

  1215. brothers,

  1216. sisters.

  1217. Remember that one?

  1218. Fathers,

  1219. mother,

  1220. children,

  1221. property for my sake.

  1222. Jesus says,

  1223. they will receive

  1224. a hundred times

  1225. as much in return

1226. and will have eternal life.

  1227. Just for good measure,

  1228. we'll throw eternal life

  1229. in there as well.

1230. And will have eternal life.

  1231. Listen,

  1232. can you imagine

  1233. a 100-fold return

  1234. on your investment?

  1235. Some of you guys

  1236. making investments.

1237. You want to invest well,

1238. what God has given you.

  1239. Right?

  1240. You got banks,

  1241. you got whatever,

  1242. you're making investments.

  1243. Can you imagine,

  1244. I don't know,

  1245. what's the rate,

1246. what's the interest rate now?

  1247. Half a percent?

  1248. That's pretty bad.

  1249. Can you imagine

  1250. getting,

  1251. you know,

  1252. there's a bank

1253. that's going to offer you

  1254. a 100-fold

  1255. return on your investment?

  1256. That's pretty good,

  1257. isn't it?

  1258. I'd go for that.

  1259. Right?

  1260. You've never seen anything

1261. like that in a bank account.

  1262. I've seen 7%,

  1263. 5%,

  1264. 3%.

  1265. We're down to about

  1266. a half a percent

  1267. just now.

  1268. But what if somebody

  1269. offered you

  1270. a 100% return

  1271. on your investment?

  1272. You'd take it.

1273. Would you jump all over that?

1274. You'd jump all over that.

  1275. Just think about that.

  1276. Wow,

  1277. boy,

  1278. let's do it.

  1279. But that's not even

1280. what he's talking about here

  1281. because 100% return

  1282. on your investment

  1283. is only two-fold.

  1284. That's only two-fold.

  1285. It's just double.

  1286. And that's not

  1287. what Jesus says here.

  1288. He doesn't say

1289. he's going to give you

  1290. 100% return

  1291. on your gospel-invested life.

1292. He says he's going to give you

  1293. a hundred-fold.

  1294. A hundred-fold

1295. return on your gospel-invested life.

1296. Do you know what that is?

  1297. That is 10,000%.

  1298. That is 10,000%.

  1299. Okay,

  1300. I think Santander

  1301. down the road there

  1302. might be over.

  1303. No,

  1304. excuse me.

  1305. 10,000%.

  1306. Anybody want to make

  1307. a gospel investment?

  1308. Anybody want to make

  1309. a gospel investment?

1310. Because that's what Jesus says

1311. he's going to give you

  1312. on your gospel investment.

  1313. 10,000%.

  1314. So,

  1315. verse 12,

  1316. don't be lazy.

  1317. Imitate those

  1318. who through faith

  1319. and patience

  1320. inherit

  1321. what has been promised.

  1322. Don't panic.

  1323. Stand firm.

  1324. stay close

  1325. and seek his kingdom

  1326. and his righteousness

  1327. and continue to invest

  1328. your life

  1329. for the sake

  1330. of his glorious name

  1331. and inherit

  1332. what has been promised.

  1333. Is it worth it?

  1334. Is it worth it?

  1335. Listen,

  1336. 10,000% worth it.

  1337. Right?

  1338. 10,000% worth it

  1339. and more.

  1340. And more.

  1341. Eternal life.

  1342. Wow.

  1343. Well,

  1344. anyway,

  1345. that's for your submission.

  1346. You have something

  1347. to talk about

  1348. over lunch now.

  1349. Okay?

  1350. Let's pray.

  1351. Lord,

  1352. tough book.

  1353. Great book.

  1354. Great letter.

  1355. Some of these things

  1356. that have been written

1357. in the scriptures for us

  1358. are very,

  1359. very quickly comprehensible.

  1360. Some of these things

  1361. you've written to us

  1362. seems like,

  1363. Lord,

  1364. you're calling us

  1365. to dig deep,

  1366. dig deep,

  1367. dig deep,

  1368. dig deep.

1369. And as we dig deep,

  1370. we hope and pray

  1371. and trust

1372. that you would lead us

1373. to where you want us

  1374. to be,

  1375. understanding

  1376. what your word

  1377. has to say,

  1378. but not just being

  1379. big-headed

  1380. followers of Christ,

  1381. but being big-hearted

  1382. followers of Christ

  1383. and putting into practice

  1384. what we learn.

1385. And I pray that we would

  1386. do that

  1387. today

1388. and in days to come.

  1389. In Jesus' name.

  1390. Amen.

  1391. Amen.

  1392. Amen.

  1393. Amen.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. Amen.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Amen.

  1409. Amen.
