  1. Well, a very good evening to you.

  2. I hope you had a good afternoon.

  3. I hope you did all your napping this afternoon

  4. and that nobody feels like they need to catch a quick nap this evening, all right?

  5. If you have a Bible, we're in Exodus 14.

  6. I don't know if anybody reads through the Bible every year.

  7. Anybody do that as a habit, practice?

  8. Read through the Bible every year?

  9. A couple?

  10. Yeah? All right.

  11. It's a great, that is a great habit to have.

  12. If you're going to have habits, all right,

  13. a good one to have is to try and get through the Bible once a year at least.

  14. I knew one guy that tried to get through the Bible four times a year.

  15. That was a big task.

  16. But you can do it about 20 minutes a day,

  17. try and get through the Bible in a year.

  18. We try to encourage the folks at Corrobras to do that every year.

  19. It's probably better to think of it as getting the Bible through you every year, okay?

  20. So it's not just like this, you know, I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive about things.

  21. So set me a task and I'll just kind of do it.

  22. I don't know that I always do it for the right reasons, but, you know, I've got to do it.

  23. Give me a problem to solve and, you know, I'll solve it.

  24. So I don't like, I can get hooked into just, I got to get through the Bible every year.

  25. But it's better if you think about trying to get the Word of God through you every year.

  26. One of the good things about trying to read through the Bible every year is that the big picture begins to take a bit more shape in your mind and in your hearts.

  27. I think that's fair to say.

  28. The more that you read through the entire content of the Word of God,

  29. the more all of the little pieces of the puzzle begin to fit in.

  30. I don't know that any of us really have all the pieces where they belong.

  31. Some of the pieces are really hard to fit in the right places.

  32. But one thing's for sure.

  33. The more that you go through and go over God's Word,

  34. the more you'll begin to just look at things, particularly in the Old Testament, I think,

  35. that are sometimes a little bit more difficult to put in the right places.

  36. Exodus, prophecies, those kind of things.

  37. You begin to see connections developing between many of the books of the Bible.

  38. And you begin to see the theme that is woven through the Bible begin to come together a bit more.

  39. So I just encourage you to do that.

  40. The reason I mention that tonight is because if you're reading chronologically through the Bible,

  41. which I try to do every year, you're probably not far off Exodus 14.

  42. I think you'll probably be around Exodus 22, 24, somewhere in there if you're reading through chronologically.

  43. So if you have been doing that, then some of what we're looking at tonight may be still fresh in your minds.

  44. I can tell by your faces that many of you haven't a clue what I'm talking about here.

  45. But okay, it's a good practice to have.

  46. If I can encourage you to do that.

  47. I started doing that, I don't know how many years ago.

  48. But I remember we had a guy named Peter Jackson come to Corubbers.

  49. I don't know if you've ever met Peter Jackson.

  50. He's a blind pianist.

  51. I think he just recently passed away, Peter.

  52. And while he was with us one year, he's blind, okay?

  53. He's been blind since he was about two years old from an illness.

  54. And I think in Braille, he was reading through the Bible.

  55. I don't know how many times a year he was reading through the Bible, but it really just caught me.

  56. If this guy can read through the Bible more than once in a year, I could probably do it myself.

  57. Okay, I've harped on about that enough.

  58. Just an encouragement for you.

  59. Exodus 14, you'll probably be aware of the fact that when you think about the book of Exodus,

  60. Exodus begins, Israel's in a good place, right?

  61. Come out of the end of book of Genesis.

  62. Jacob and the rest of the family have gone down to join Joseph in Egypt.

  63. Okay, they're given favor by Pharaoh because Joseph had been placed into such an exalted position in Egypt.

  64. And they're given this great land of Goshen and they're given the greatest of the land

  65. and the flocks are prospering there and the people are prospering there.

  66. And so Genesis ends and Exodus begins and Israel's in a good place.

  67. But of course, a Pharaoh arises who doesn't know Joseph, that generation and the generation of Joseph's brothers die out.

  68. And very, very quickly, Egypt, the leaders and the rulers in Egypt begin to get really nervous about the prosperity of the nation of Israel.

  69. They've grown, they're strong, they're prosperous.

  70. And then they begin to subject them to just a great oppression.

  71. And it's not long before Israel are in a really bad place.

  72. By the time you get to chapter 14 now, okay, they've done their time.

  73. The Lord prophesied that they would be in Egypt for many years.

  74. They were in Egypt for over 400 years.

  75. But now by the time you get to chapter 14, Moses has come.

  76. The mighty hand of God has been revealed against Egypt.

  77. And Israel comes out, the Passover in chapter 12.

  78. And really interesting, they're coming out of slavery now.

  79. And just an amazing experience of incredible hardship and oppression for generations.

  80. Okay, so you got to remember that the generation that came out of Egypt,

  81. that generation had never experienced freedom.

  82. Right?

  83. Because nobody was over 400 years old.

  84. So that generation had never experienced freedom.

  85. All they had ever known was slavery and oppression.

  86. That was their life.

  87. They were born into that.

  88. They grew up in that.

  89. They married in that.

  90. They had children in that.

  91. They died in that.

  92. Okay, so that's kind of something of the backdrop here.

  93. The nation that is now being delivered out of Egypt,

  94. they have never known what it feels like to be free.

  95. We just take that so for granted, don't we?

  96. It's great to hear people praying tonight for the world and for countries where people wish they had what we had.

  97. They would give anything to live in a nation that we live in.

  98. As much as we bellyache about it and moan and groan about it, they'd give anything to live where we do.

  99. And as you know, we're in the midst of this mass migration now that we've never seen.

  100. Certainly, I've never seen anything like it.

  101. And people want to live in a better place.

  102. Well, 430 years of bondage, 430 years in Egypt, most of those years in bondage.

  103. And now Israel are being delivered.

  104. And as they come out, the generation that is coming out have never experienced freedom.

  105. And now they're out.

  106. Now they're out.

  107. I've read this so many times, but the more I read it, the more I just try to get my head around what it must have felt like.

  108. What it must have felt like to never have known.

  109. I mean, your parents didn't know freedom.

  110. Your grandparents didn't know freedom.

  111. Your great-grandparents didn't know freedom.

  112. Just generations of your nation have never known freedom.

  113. And now they are out.

  114. 430 years.

  115. And they're out.

  116. They're free.

  117. I can almost imagine.

  118. I can hear them saying, I am never going to complain about anything again.

  119. Right?

  120. Can you see them?

  121. You've had a headache before.

  122. Right?

  123. You've had a bad headache.

  124. And it's lasted for hours.

  125. And you pray to God.

  126. And you take your aspirin or whatever.

  127. And then your headache goes away.

  128. And you just think, oh, Lord, thank you.

  129. I'm never going to complain about anything again.

  130. Until tomorrow.

  131. Right?

  132. I mean, 430 years and they are out.

  133. You can almost hear them being released from this incredible burden.

  134. And you just know that nothing is ever going to bother you again.

  135. Well, let's see if that's true.

  136. Exodus 14.

  137. Let's pick it up in verse 1.

  138. Now the Lord spoke to Moses saying, speak to the children of Israel that they turn and camp before Pi-Hahirath between Migdal and the sea opposite Baal-Ziphon.

  139. You shall camp before it by the sea.

  140. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, they're bewildered by the land.

  141. Mark that phrase because it is repeated again and again and again and again in the Old Testament.

  142. The reason why God does so much of what he does in the Old Testament that, if we're honest, really does boggle our minds is simply that the world might see and have a clearer picture of who he is.

  143. The greatest thing this universe could ever see is the greatness of God.

  144. Is that not fair?

  145. The theme of the Bible, I think the theme of everything, is the glory of God.

  146. What does that mean?

  147. It just means the expression of the greatness of who God is.

  148. I think that is the theme of everything.

  149. I think that is the purpose of everything.

  150. Do you think there's a reason?

  151. The reason why there's a universe is because God determined that he would express the greatness of who he is.

  152. Fair?

  153. Is that fair?

  154. Is that not why everything is here?

  155. Psalm 19, verse 1, the heavens declare the glory of the Lord.

    Psalms 19:1

  156. Well, what do you mean they declare the glory of the Lord?

  157. Can you put your hand to your ear and you hear them saying something?

  158. No.

  159. Just by their very existence, they express the greatness of who God is.

  160. That's why God made man in his image, didn't he?

  161. Isaiah 43, verse 7, God made us for his glory.

    Isaiah 43:7

  162. God made us to express the greatness of who he is.

  163. How did he make us?

  164. Genesis 1, 26, how did he make us?

  165. God made man in his image, like him.

  166. We're not God, but God made us like him.

  167. The reason God made us was that he wanted to express the greatness of who he is

  168. in a being that was like him.

  169. So God made us like him.

  170. And we're different than anything else in creation.

  171. We are like God.

  172. In so many ways, God made us for his glory.

  173. And so even here, God is going to act.

  174. And what he's going to do is he acts.

  175. All this deliverance, all that God is doing in this nation,

  176. all that God does through Christ at the cross,

  177. all that he does in the creation and the summation of the world and everything,

  178. expresses the greatest thing in the world,

  179. is that the greatness of who God is would be expressed,

  180. that it would be seen,

  181. and that people would see that.

  182. That's the reason for the gospel,

  183. is that people would come to understand,

  184. not just how great it is to be a part of a Brunsfield Evangelical Church,

  185. although I'm sure that's great,

  186. but that they would come to know Christ

  187. and recognize what it means

  188. to understand and know the God who made everything

  189. and the greatness of who he is.

  190. God made everything for his glory.

  191. But we have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  192. And so all the pictures of the Old Testament,

  193. we thought about this this morning,

  194. all the shadowy insufficiencies are fulfilled in Christ.

  195. And when Christ comes and he makes atonement for sin,

  196. all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  197. that is a problem.

  198. The wages of sin is death, so Jesus dies.

  199. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  200. Jesus comes and makes atonement for sin,

  201. that as we respond to Christ's offering

  202. and sacrifice for us, we might be forgiven.

  203. And then as Paul writes to the Corinthians,

  204. don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,

  205. transforming power of God in our lives

  206. as we respond to the gospel?

  207. Don't you know that the Spirit of God is in you

  208. and that you are not your own?

  209. You have been bought with a price.

  210. Therefore, anybody know?

  211. Glorify God in your bodies.

  212. See the big picture?

  213. Made for God's glory, fallen from glory,

  214. restored to glory in Christ.

  215. Okay, that's not really my message tonight.

  216. It's a freebie, but I'll let you think about that.

  217. Okay, so here it is again.

  218. All that he does,

  219. that is the purpose that lies behind,

  220. I would suggest to you,

  221. the purpose that lies behind everything.

  222. So what he's going to do here with Egypt and with Pharaoh,

  223. it just continues to fall along those lines

  224. of God expressing the greatness of who he is.

  225. That is what he does.

  226. So then I will harden Pharaoh's heart

  227. that he will pursue them

  228. and I will gain honor or be glorified

  229. that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord.

  230. And they did so.

  231. Now it was told the king of Egypt,

  232. so Israel went out and they camped by the sea.

  233. They did so.

  234. Now it was told the king of Egypt

  235. that the people had fled

  236. and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants

  237. was turned against the people.

  238. Remember he had sent them out finally,

  239. go, go, just leave.

  240. You've ruined, you've destroyed our nation.

  241. Go, leave.

  242. Go and make your sacrifices.

  243. Take your animals, take your children,

  244. take everybody and just get out.

  245. Right?

  246. Exodus 11, 12, get out.

  247. And they did.

  248. But now he's having second thoughts.

  249. Right?

  250. That's quite a big workforce to lose overnight.

  251. He's having second thoughts.

  252. The heart of Pharaoh and his servants

  253. were turned against the people.

  254. And they said,

  255. why have we done this?

  256. That we have let Israel go from serving us.

  257. We've lost them all.

  258. Right?

  259. They were a huge nation by this time.

  260. They were a huge nation.

  261. 600,000 adult men come out.

  262. So many would speculate perhaps up to 2 million of them

  263. at this point in time.

  264. It's a huge workforce that we're doing,

  265. by and large, most of the manual labor

  266. for the nation of Egypt.

  267. And they're gone.

  268. What have we done?

  269. What have we done?

  270. We've let them go.

  271. So verse 6,

  272. He made ready his chariot

  273. and took his people with him.

  274. Also, he took 600 choice chariots

  275. and all the chariots of Egypt

  276. with captains over every one of them.

  277. And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh,

  278. king of Egypt,

  279. and he pursued the children of Israel.

  280. And the children of Israel went out with boldness.

  281. So the Egyptians pursued them.

  282. So, okay, at this point in time,

  283. they're feeling pretty good.

  284. They've gone out with boldness, right?

  285. They're delivered.

  286. They're out after 400.

  287. They're feeling good.

  288. You with me?

  289. They're feeling good.

  290. They're going out with boldness.

  291. The Egyptians have sent them over.

  292. They plundered the Egyptians,

  293. silver and gold.

  294. Remember, right?

  295. They took all their stuff

  296. and they're going out.

  297. They're heading out.

  298. The promised land is...

  299. This is a happy days.

  300. Happy days.

  301. They're in a good place at this point.

  302. They're going out.

  303. They're delivered.

  304. Wow, what must that have felt like?

  305. Gone out with boldness, we're told.

  306. So the Egyptians pursued them, verse 9,

  307. and all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh.

  308. That's a big company.

  309. His horsemen and his army.

  310. And overtook them,

  311. camping by the sea beside Pihirith

  312. before Baal-Ziphon.

  313. Now, what's this?

  314. They'd be thinking, right?

  315. What is...

  316. They get out of here.

  317. Go.

  318. Leave us.

  319. We're finished with you.

  320. What's happening now?

  321. Who are these guys?

  322. What?

  323. Right?

  324. We thought we were out.

  325. We thought we were home free.

  326. We...

  327. All right.

  328. So, doesn't quite look as good.

  329. Verse 10,

  330. When Pharaoh drew near,

  331. the children of Israel lifted their eyes

  332. and behold,

  333. the Egyptians marched after them.

  334. And so they were very afraid.

  335. Going out with boldness,

  336. now they're afraid.

  337. And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.

  338. And they said to Moses,

  339. because there were no graves in Egypt,

  340. have you taken us away to die in the wilderness?

  341. Didn't take too long

  342. before they started complaining again, didn't it?

  343. Never complain about anything again.

  344. Why have you so dealt with us

  345. to bring us up out of Egypt?

  346. Now, I didn't hear anyone complaining

  347. when they were in Egypt.

  348. Did you?

  349. Right?

  350. I mean, I'm sure just, you know,

  351. they were crying out to the Lord.

  352. The Lord heard their cries,

  353. their oppression.

  354. They were miserable

  355. and they were asking God to deliver them.

  356. God delivers them.

  357. And now they're saying,

  358. why do you take us out of here?

  359. This is crazy.

  360. This is crazy.

  361. Saying, let us alone

  362. that we may serve the Egyptians.

  363. Hang on a minute.

  364. Four to thirty years,

  365. you're crying out to get us out of here.

  366. So I got them out of here.

  367. Let us serve the Egyptians.

  368. This is crazy.

  369. It's crazy.

  370. For it would have been better

  371. for us to serve the Egyptians

  372. than that we should die in the wilderness.

  373. So you have some sense of their despair.

  374. This is great despair.

  375. They obviously feel as though

  376. there is no hope.

  377. Why else,

  378. after crying out for four hundred and thirty years

  379. and then being delivered,

  380. would they say,

  381. hey, we'd rather not have been delivered?

  382. Their despair must be huge.

  383. Isn't it?

  384. Can you imagine being delivered

  385. from some illness or something?

  386. I don't know.

  387. Some terrifying experience of your life

  388. and you're crying out to God

  389. to be delivered.

  390. God delivers you

  391. and in just a couple of days

  392. you're saying,

  393. I'd rather have that.

  394. Something massively bad

  395. must be coming to your life

  396. to say,

  397. I'd rather go back to that.

  398. That's kind of where they're at.

  399. Verse 13.

  400. Well, let's stop in verse 12.

  401. Let's stop in verse 12.

  402. We'll pick up in verse 13

  403. in a minute.

  404. Okay?

  405. God is leading them out of Egypt.

  406. Right?

  407. God is leading them out of Egypt.

  408. Nobody's going to argue with that.

  409. Okay?

  410. Who's in control here?

  411. God is in control.

  412. Who's leading them out?

  413. God is leading them out.

  414. Moses is there,

  415. but Moses is God's spokesman

  416. and through Moses,

  417. God is leading them out of Egypt.

  418. chapters 13, 14, and 15 of Exodus

  419. form for me just an incredible story

  420. about how sometimes God leads us.

  421. And there are three really bizarre

  422. different ways here.

  423. One in chapter 13,

  424. one in chapter 14,

  425. one in chapter 15.

  426. We're just going to look at chapter 14.

  427. But there are three very unlikely,

  428. seemingly unlikely ways

  429. that God leads these people.

  430. God is leading.

  431. They're not making a mistake.

  432. God's at the head of the whole deal here.

  433. And yet it's a bizarre,

  434. three bizarre different ways

  435. that God leads.

  436. The first way he seems to lead them

  437. is by a different route

  438. than they had planned to go.

  439. Remember, they had planned to go

  440. straight to the promised land

  441. and he leads them instead

  442. away from where they would have experienced

  443. the conflict with the Philistines.

  444. And now here in chapter 14,

  445. he leads them seemingly to a dead end.

  446. They've got nowhere to go.

  447. In fact, it seems to be such a dead end

  448. that they would prefer to go back to Egypt.

  449. And then once you get into chapter 15,

  450. he leads them to a very dry place.

  451. So here God is leading them,

  452. but in a strange way he's leading them.

  453. So since when does God lead

  454. down a dead end street?

  455. You don't perceive that God does that.

  456. Not the God of the Bible,

  457. not the God who loves us,

  458. not the God who makes provision for us.

  459. Since when does God lead

  460. down a dead end street?

  461. What's going on here?

  462. I wonder if any of you have ever hit

  463. one of these in your life.

  464. I wonder if any of you have ever hit,

  465. as a follower of Christ,

  466. hit a time in your life

  467. when you just don't get it.

  468. You're praying to God,

  469. you're seeking to honor God with your life,

  470. doing everything you can to,

  471. as far as you know,

  472. to obey God.

  473. And yet the circumstances,

  474. as far as you're concerned,

  475. don't seem to be following the script

  476. that you've written.

  477. Right?

  478. Wait a minute, Lord,

  479. that's not the script that I've written.

  480. And you just wonder,

  481. Lord, what on earth are you doing?

  482. You're leading me down a dead end street.

  483. I think that's how Israel

  484. are feeling just now.

  485. You're trusting,

  486. you're seeking,

  487. you're asking,

  488. but all you seem to get

  489. is a dead end.

  490. The Israelites are right here.

  491. The Egyptians are on one side,

  492. the sea is on the other side,

  493. their backs are up against the wall.

  494. It's the picture I've got.

  495. Their backs are up against the wall.

  496. And verse 10 says

  497. they are terrified.

  498. The AV says

  499. they're sore afraid.

  500. Right?

  501. That's big.

  502. They're sore.

  503. I like to,

  504. sometimes you go back

  505. to the old English,

  506. that's good.

  507. They're sore afraid.

  508. It hurts.

  509. They're so afraid.

  510. They're sore afraid.

  511. That's fear.

  512. And so they cry out

  513. in verse 11,

  514. was it because there were no graves

  515. in Egypt that you brought us

  516. here to die?

  517. Or if you like,

  518. did you have to take us

  519. all the way out here

  520. to show us a dead end?

  521. We had a dead end

  522. enough in Egypt.

  523. Did you have to bring us

  524. all the way out here

  525. to show us a dead end?

  526. Didn't take long

  527. for these guys to give up.

  528. Well, here's the question

  529. I'll pose for us tonight

  530. with this in view.

  531. What happens when

  532. God is leading us,

  533. but where he leads us

  534. seems to be to a dead end?

  535. What happens?

  536. What do we do then?

  537. What do we do

  538. when our life hits a place

  539. where we just don't get it?

  540. We know God is for us.

  541. We know God is for us.

  542. That's pretty clear.

  543. His word is very clear

  544. on that in Christ.

  545. We belong to him.

  546. We're beloved to him in Christ.

  547. We're accepted in the beloved.

  548. We belong to his family.

  549. What happens?

  550. What do you do

  551. when it seems like

  552. you've reached

  553. some kind of a dead end

  554. in your life?

  555. It's not what you would ever

  556. have expected God

  557. to do in your life.

  558. It's not a great place to be.

  559. What happens then?

  560. Let me just give you

  561. a few suggestions

  562. and we'll finish up tonight.

  563. Number one,

  564. I think if you reach

  565. a place like this

  566. in your life,

  567. if you have an experience

  568. like this,

  569. if you're in an experience

  570. like this just now,

  571. I think you need to remember

  572. that what you see

  573. is not all that you get.

  574. Is that not fair?

  575. What you see

  576. is not all that you get.

  577. We so often

  578. find ourselves

  579. being driven

  580. more by what we can see

  581. than by what we can't see.

  582. Fair enough?

  583. Right?

  584. Our emotions,

  585. our experiences.

  586. What you see

  587. is not all you get.

  588. Remember Paul

  589. in 1 Corinthians 13 verse 12.

    1 Corinthians 13:12

  590. We see now

  591. in a mirror

  592. what?

  593. Dimly.

  594. Dimly.

  595. Dimly.

  596. I don't have

  597. all the answers.

  598. I don't have

  599. all the answers.

  600. In fact,

  601. now

  602. I'm

  603. hitting 55.

  604. My eyesight's getting so bad

  605. I can't even read

  606. all the questions.

  607. But I don't have

  608. all the answers.

  609. But I love

  610. the perspective

  611. that David gives

  612. in Psalm 14.

  613. He says that

  614. God looks down.

  615. We just look out.

  616. We just look out

  617. and all we can see

  618. is what

  619. has just

  620. been behind us

  621. and where we are now.

  622. Don't know what

  623. the next day

  624. is going to bring.

  625. All we can see

  626. is just on this

  627. very limited plane.

  628. But God

  629. looks down

  630. we're told

  631. from heaven

  632. on the sons

  633. of men.

  634. I love that perspective.

  635. We have to remember

  636. that perspective.

  637. What's going on

  638. when it looks like

  639. a dead end?

  640. Well,

  641. for one thing

  642. you're certainly

  643. not seeing

  644. all that there is.

  645. I've shared

  646. I'm sure before

  647. I won't go into

  648. belabor this.

  649. We've been preaching

  650. through Job

  651. I said this morning

  652. at Corubbers

  653. so I've spoken

  654. a few times

  655. already about

  656. just a very,

  657. very bad patch

  658. that I had

  659. a number of years ago.

  660. A burnout,

  661. breakdown,

  662. whatever,

  663. anxiety and depression

  664. and it

  665. bumbled on

  666. for me

  667. for years.

  668. For years.

  669. It was just

  670. a horrible

  671. dark place

  672. for me.

  673. Probably when I

  674. started that place

  675. I didn't have

  676. many books

  677. on my shelf

  678. about depression

  679. or mental illness

  680. or anxiety

  681. or anything.

  682. If any of you

  683. want to borrow

  684. a book now

  685. I probably

  686. have them all.

  687. I've just got

  688. shelves full

  689. of these things.

  690. One of the best

  691. books I ever read

  692. was by a guy

  693. named David Jeremiah

  694. and he

  695. was a pastor

  696. in the States

  697. and he'd

  698. gone through

  699. lymphoma

  700. and he just

  701. had written

  702. this book

  703. with a number

  704. of other people

  705. sharing difficult

  706. experiences

  707. from a Christian

  708. point of view

  709. and he ties

  710. each one

  711. of the chapters

  712. in with a

  713. different psalm

  714. and it's just

  715. a great book.

  716. But the title

  717. of the book

  718. is A Bend

  719. in the Road

  720. and let me

  721. just read you

  722. just a wee poem

  723. that's right

  724. at the very

  725. beginning of the book

  726. A Bend

  727. in the Road

  728. and here's

  729. what he says.

  730. He says

  731. sometimes we

  732. come to life's

  733. crossroads

  734. and we view

  735. what we think

  736. is the end.

  737. But God

  738. has a much

  739. wider vision

  740. and he knows

  741. that it's only

  742. a bend.

  743. The road

  744. will go on

  745. and get smoother

  746. and after we've

  747. stopped for a rest

  748. the path

  749. that lies

  750. hidden

  751. beyond us

  752. is often

  753. the path

  754. that is best.

  755. So rest

  756. and relax

  757. and grow

  758. stronger.

  759. Let go

  760. and let God

  761. share your load

  762. and have faith

  763. in a brighter

  764. tomorrow.

  765. You've just

  766. come

  767. to a bend

  768. in the road.

  769. So not good.

  770. We view

  771. what we think

  772. and say

  773. Lord

  774. what have you

  775. done?

  776. I'd rather

  777. be in Egypt.

  778. I'd rather

  779. be in Egypt.

  780. Man that must

  781. be pretty bad

  782. to wish

  783. that you were

  784. back there.

  785. I'd rather

  786. be in Egypt.

  787. What are

  788. you doing

  789. now?

  790. Don't forget

  791. that all

  792. that you

  793. see is not

  794. all that

  795. there is.

  796. The Israelites

  797. it looks

  798. like the

  799. end.

  800. But remember

  801. that God

  802. initiated this

  803. in the first

  804. place.

  805. It wasn't

  806. Pharaoh that

  807. initiated this

  808. it was God

  809. that brought

  810. them here.

  811. God told

  812. them where

  813. to go.

  814. God sent

  815. them to

  816. the sea.

  817. God sent

  818. them to

  819. the place

  820. where their

  821. backs are now

  822. against the

  823. wall.

  824. God sent

  825. them there.

  826. there.

  827. I'd reckon

  828. that in the

  829. number of

  830. people that

  831. are here

  832. tonight

  833. somebody is

  834. probably feeling

  835. something like

  836. this or you

  837. know somebody

  838. who is.

  839. And yet God's

  840. the one who's

  841. sent them

  842. here.

  843. The Lord

  844. said to

  845. Moses

  846. verse 1

  847. tell the

  848. Israelites to

  849. turn back

  850. and to

  851. encamp

  852. between

  853. Migdal

  854. and the

  855. sea.

  856. God

  857. sent

  858. them

  859. there.

  860. And then

  861. Pharaoh's

  862. going to

  863. think the

  864. Israelites are

  865. wandering

  866. around in

  867. the land

  868. in confusion

  869. hemmed in

  870. by the

  871. desert.

  872. So it's

  873. kind of

  874. like the

  875. old wandering

  876. around in

  877. confusion

  878. trick.

  879. Isn't it?

  880. You know

  881. God's

  882. going to

  883. see them

  884. wandering

  885. around and

  886. Pharaoh's

  887. going to

  888. go and

  889. get them.

  890. Nothing

  891. has

  892. God has

  893. lost nothing

  894. of his

  895. control of

  896. the situation.

  897. It only

  898. looks like

  899. they're

  900. wandering

  901. around in

  902. the desert.

  903. It only

  904. looks like

  905. a dead

  906. end.

  907. Of course

  908. it does

  909. see.

  910. But that's

  911. not all

  912. there is.

  913. They see

  914. Pharaoh,

  915. they see

  916. 600 of

  917. his best

  918. chariots,

  919. Egyptian

  920. officers,

  921. ranks of

  922. soldiers,

  923. but unfortunately

  924. the one

  925. person they

  926. don't seem

  927. to see in

  928. this place

  929. is God.

  930. The one

  931. person they

  932. don't seem

  933. to see is

  934. God.

  935. Reminds

  936. me,

  937. remember

  938. Gehazi?

  939. Remember

  940. that story

  941. in 2

  942. Kings 6?

  943. It's a

  944. great story,

  945. I'm sure

  946. you know

  947. it.

  948. And the

  949. king of

  950. the Arameans

  951. is desperate

  952. to get his

  953. hands on

  954. Elisha.

  955. Because as

  956. the king

  957. of the

  958. Arameans

  959. makes all

  960. his battle

  961. plans,

  962. God has

  963. given

  964. Elisha

  965. insight into

  966. what's going

  967. on in

  968. their board

  969. room.

  970. He's

  971. revealing to

  972. Elisha

  973. the plans

  974. that they're

  975. making,

  976. that the

  977. Arameans

  978. are making

  979. in secret.

  980. And so the

  981. king of the

  982. Arameans is

  983. just desperate

  984. to get his

  985. hands on

  986. Elisha.

  987. So listen,

  988. 2 Kings 6,

    2 Kings 6:13

  989. verse 13,

  990. the king

  991. says,

  992. go,

  993. find where

  994. he is,

  995. the king

  996. ordered,

  997. so I

  998. can send

  999. men and

  1000. capture him.

  1001. The report

  1002. came back,

  1003. he's in

  1004. Dothan.

  1005. So they

  1006. sent horses

  1007. and chariots

  1008. and a

  1009. strong force

  1010. there.

  1011. Sounds like

  1012. the Egyptians

  1013. coming out

  1014. to get the

  1015. Israelites.

  1016. And they

  1017. went by

  1018. night and

  1019. they surrounded

  1020. the city.

  1021. And the

  1022. servant of

  1023. the man of

  1024. God,

  1025. Gehazi,

  1026. the servant

  1027. of the man

  1028. of God

  1029. got up and

  1030. he went

  1031. out early

  1032. in the

  1033. morning.

  1034. And an

  1035. army of

  1036. horses and

  1037. chariots

  1038. had surrounded

  1039. the city.

  1040. Oh my

  1041. Lord,

  1042. he says,

  1043. what are we

  1044. going to

  1045. do?

  1046. Don't be

  1047. afraid,

  1048. the prophet

  1049. answered,

  1050. because those

  1051. who were

  1052. with us

  1053. are more

  1054. than those

  1055. who are

  1056. with them.

  1057. And you

  1058. can see,

  1059. you can

  1060. almost see

  1061. Gehazi

  1062. at that

  1063. point.

  1064. Gehazi

  1065. comes out

  1066. of the

  1067. house,

  1068. all he

  1069. sees are

  1070. the hillsides

  1071. covered with

  1072. Aramean

  1073. soldiers.

  1074. And Elisha

  1075. says,

  1076. oh don't be

  1077. afraid,

  1078. those who

  1079. are with

  1080. us are

  1081. more than

  1082. those who

  1083. are with

  1084. them.

  1085. And you

  1086. can just

  1087. see Gehazi,

  1088. the eyes

  1089. are popping

  1090. out of his

  1091. head with

  1092. fear.

  1093. And he's

  1094. probably

  1095. thinking,

  1096. Elisha,

  1097. what have

  1098. you been

  1099. drinking?

  1100. What do

  1101. you mean?

  1102. What do

  1103. you mean?

  1104. So Elisha

  1105. prayed,

  1106. Lord,

  1107. open his

  1108. eyes that

  1109. he may

  1110. see.

  1111. And the

  1112. Lord opened

  1113. the servant's

  1114. eyes and

  1115. he looked

  1116. and saw

  1117. the hills

  1118. full of

  1119. the horses

  1120. and chariots

  1121. of fire

  1122. all around

  1123. Elisha.

  1124. What you

  1125. see is not

  1126. all that

  1127. there is.

  1128. That is

  1129. always the

  1130. case,

  1131. folks.

  1132. That is

  1133. always the

  1134. case.

  1135. When God

  1136. leads us

  1137. to a place

  1138. that we're

  1139. uncomfortable

  1140. in,

  1141. we don't

  1142. like it,

  1143. we're

  1144. despairing,

  1145. we wonder

  1146. where he

  1147. is,

  1148. we're

  1149. crying out.

  1150. One of

  1151. the books

  1152. I got on

  1153. my shelf

  1154. is When

  1155. Heaven is

  1156. Silent

  1157. by Ron

  1158. Dunn.

  1159. And you're

  1160. crying out

  1161. and you're

  1162. getting no

  1163. answer and

  1164. you just,

  1165. you know,

  1166. Lord,

  1167. where are

  1168. you?

  1169. Read the

  1170. Psalms.

  1171. They're

  1172. filled with

  1173. this kind

  1174. of an

  1175. emotion.

  1176. They're

  1177. filled with

  1178. it.

  1179. Lord,

  1180. where are

  1181. you?

  1182. All that

  1183. you see

  1184. is not

  1185. all that

  1186. there is.

  1187. You just

  1188. need to give

  1189. God some

  1190. space to

  1191. work.

  1192. Second

  1193. thing I'd

  1194. suggest to

  1195. you hear

  1196. when you

  1197. hit a

  1198. dead

  1199. end is

  1200. that dead

  1201. ends tend

  1202. to be some

  1203. of the

  1204. greatest

  1205. opportunities

  1206. for us

  1207. to express

  1208. the greatness

  1209. of who

  1210. God is

  1211. in our

  1212. lives.

  1213. I think

  1214. that's fair.

  1215. I think

  1216. that's fair.

  1217. I think

  1218. difficult

  1219. circumstances

  1220. would look

  1221. like dead

  1222. ends for

  1223. us tend

  1224. to be

  1225. those times

  1226. of our

  1227. life when

  1228. we have

  1229. the greatest

  1230. opportunity

  1231. for the

  1232. greatness of

  1233. who God

  1234. is to be

  1235. seen in

  1236. our lives.

  1237. Would you

  1238. agree?

  1239. It's a

  1240. great opportunity

  1241. at these

  1242. points.

  1243. For God

  1244. to be

  1245. glorified in

  1246. our bodies.

  1247. Look back

  1248. at verse

  1249. 2 again.

  1250. Tell the

  1251. Israelites

  1252. to turn

  1253. back,

  1254. set up

  1255. camp by

  1256. the sea.

  1257. Pharaoh's

  1258. going to

  1259. think they're

  1260. trapped and

  1261. then I'm

  1262. going to

  1263. harden his

  1264. heart.

  1265. He's going

  1266. to chase

  1267. after them

  1268. for all

  1269. that he's

  1270. worth.

  1271. But I

  1272. am going

  1273. to gain

  1274. glory for

  1275. myself.

  1276. Honor,

  1277. glory for

  1278. myself.

  1279. God says

  1280. through

  1281. Israel's

  1282. sticky

  1283. situation.

  1284. I'm going

  1285. to gain

  1286. glory for

  1287. myself.

  1288. God is

  1289. going to be

  1290. glorified.

  1291. And is that

  1292. not what we

  1293. pray?

  1294. I think

  1295. we've

  1296. sung

  1297. some

  1298. songs

  1299. like that

  1300. tonight.

  1301. Lord,

  1302. I could

  1303. never

  1304. thank you

  1305. enough for

  1306. the sacrifice

  1307. that you've

  1308. made on

  1309. my behalf.

  1310. I never

  1311. deserved it.

  1312. You sent

  1313. your son to

  1314. die for

  1315. my sin.

  1316. I could

  1317. never

  1318. express to

  1319. you in

  1320. a million

  1321. lifetimes

  1322. the gratitude

  1323. that I

  1324. feel.

  1325. My life

  1326. is what?

  1327. Yours.

  1328. Do with

  1329. it as you

  1330. will.

  1331. Have any

  1332. of you ever

  1333. prayed that

  1334. prayer?

  1335. Any of you

  1336. ever prayed

  1337. that prayer?

  1338. Anybody,

  1339. anything like

  1340. that?

  1341. That's a

  1342. dangerous

  1343. prayer to

  1344. pray,

  1345. isn't it?

  1346. My life

  1347. is your

  1348. do with

  1349. it as

  1350. you will.

  1351. Glorify

  1352. yourself,

  1353. Lord,

  1354. in my

  1355. life.

  1356. Glorify

  1357. yourself in

  1358. my life.

  1359. Paul faced

  1360. this.

  1361. Same

  1362. experience.

  1363. Israel

  1364. is stuck

  1365. and God's

  1366. getting the

  1367. glory.

  1368. All they

  1369. saw was

  1370. the stuck

  1371. bit.

  1372. They

  1373. saw the

  1374. stuck.

  1375. They seem

  1376. to have

  1377. forgotten

  1378. all about

  1379. the cloud

  1380. and the

  1381. fire.

  1382. Never

  1383. seen the

  1384. dawn on

  1385. them.

  1386. God

  1387. might be

  1388. doing

  1389. something

  1390. great

  1391. for

  1392. himself.

  1393. Never

  1394. seemed

  1395. to

  1396. dawn

  1397. on

  1398. them.

  1399. God

  1400. had

  1401. led

  1402. them

  1403. out.

  1404. God

  1405. knew

  1406. what

  1407. he

  1408. was

  1409. doing

  1410. and

  1411. God

  1412. was

  1413. going

  1414. to

  1415. glorify

  1416. himself

  1417. in

  1418. what

  1419. seemed

  1420. to

  1421. them

  1422. was

  1423. a

  1424. dead

  1425. end.

  1426. Be

  1427. patient.

  1428. Be

  1429. patient.

  1430. The

  1431. story's

  1432. not

  1433. over

  1434. yet.

  1435. Could

  1436. have

  1437. said to

  1438. Israel,

  1439. you're

  1440. not in

  1441. the

  1442. water

  1443. yet.

  1444. They

  1445. had

  1446. themselves

  1447. in

  1448. the

  1449. depths

  1450. of

  1451. the

  1452. Red

  1453. Sea,

  1454. didn't

  1455. they?

  1456. They

  1457. already

  1458. had

  1459. themselves

  1460. in

  1461. the

  1462. depths

  1463. of

  1464. the

  1465. Red

  1466. Sea.

  1467. They're

  1468. not

  1469. in

  1470. the

  1471. sea

  1472. yet.

  1473. God's

  1474. not

  1475. finished

  1476. yet.

  1477. Be

  1478. patient.

  1479. I think

  1480. this

  1481. happens

  1482. to us

  1483. loads.

  1484. We

  1485. get

  1486. into

  1487. these

  1488. difficult

  1489. circumstances

  1490. in

  1491. our

  1492. lives

  1493. and

  1494. we

  1495. write

  1496. the

  1497. end

  1498. of

  1499. the

  1500. story

  1501. and

  1502. that's

  1503. not

  1504. the

  1505. same

  1506. script

  1507. that

  1508. God

  1509. has.

  1510. Give

  1511. him

  1512. an

  1513. opportunity

  1514. to

  1515. show

  1516. you

  1517. what

  1518. he's

  1519. written.

  1520. Paul

  1521. says

  1522. in

  1523. Romans

    Romans 15:4

  1524. 15

  1525. verse

  1526. 4

  1527. whatever

  1528. was

  1529. written

  1530. in

  1531. the

  1532. earlier

  1533. times

  1534. was

  1535. written

  1536. for

  1537. our

  1538. instruction

  1539. that

  1540. through

  1541. perseverance

  1542. and

  1543. encouragement

  1544. of the

  1545. scriptures

  1546. we might

  1547. have

  1548. hope.

  1549. Do you

  1550. hear that?

  1551. By

  1552. looking at

  1553. their

  1554. situation

  1555. we need

  1556. to learn

  1557. something

  1558. from it

  1559. and we

  1560. might

  1561. have

  1562. hope.

  1563. These

  1564. guys

  1565. got

  1566. hemmed

  1567. in

  1568. at

  1569. the

  1570. Red

  1571. Sea

  1572. so

  1573. that

  1574. my

  1575. dead

  1576. end

  1577. experience

  1578. might

  1579. not

  1580. sink

  1581. me.

  1582. They

  1583. got

  1584. hemmed

  1585. in

  1586. so

  1587. that

  1588. I

  1589. could

  1590. be

  1591. reminded

  1592. that

  1593. he's

  1594. going

  1595. to do

  1596. exactly

  1597. the

  1598. same

  1599. thing

  1600. when

  1601. I

  1602. hit

  1603. a

  1604. dead

  1605. end.

  1606. It's

  1607. the way

  1608. Paul

  1609. puts it

  1610. in

  1611. Philippians

    Philippians 1:19

  1612. 1

  1613. verse

  1614. 19

  1615. talking

  1616. about

  1617. being

  1618. in

  1619. prison

  1620. for

  1621. Christ.

  1622. He

  1623. says

  1624. I

  1625. know

  1626. that

  1627. my

  1628. dead

  1629. end

  1630. prison

  1631. experience

  1632. is

  1633. going

  1634. to

  1635. turn

  1636. out

  1637. for

  1638. my

  1639. deliverance

  1640. through

  1641. your

  1642. prayers

  1643. and

  1644. the

  1645. provision

  1646. of

  1647. the

  1648. spirit

  1649. of

  1650. Jesus

  1651. Christ.

  1652. Completely

  1653. different

  1654. perspective

  1655. on

  1656. his

  1657. circumstances.

  1658. Completely

  1659. different

  1660. perspective.

  1661. According

  1662. to my

  1663. earnest

  1664. expectation

  1665. and hope

  1666. that I

  1667. shall not

  1668. be put

  1669. to shame

  1670. in anything

  1671. but that

  1672. with all

  1673. boldness

  1674. listen to

  1675. this

  1676. that with

  1677. all

  1678. boldness

  1679. Christ

  1680. shall

  1681. even

  1682. now

  1683. as

  1684. always

  1685. be

  1686. exalted

  1687. in

  1688. my

  1689. body.

  1690. I'm

  1691. in

  1692. prison.

  1693. I don't

  1694. like

  1695. being

  1696. in

  1697. prison.

  1698. But

  1699. it's

  1700. an

  1701. opportunity

  1702. for

  1703. God

  1704. to

  1705. be

  1706. exalted

  1707. in

  1708. my

  1709. body

  1710. whether

  1711. by

  1712. life

  1713. or

  1714. by

  1715. death.

  1716. For

  1717. to

  1718. me

  1719. to

  1720. live

  1721. is

  1722. Christ

  1723. and

  1724. to

  1725. die

  1726. gain.

  1727. You

  1728. know

  1729. what's

  1730. going

  1731. on

  1732. when

  1733. you

  1734. hit

  1735. a

  1736. dead

  1737. end?

  1738. Great

  1739. opportunity

  1740. to

  1741. express

  1742. the

  1743. greatness

  1744. of

  1745. who

  1746. God

  1747. is

  1748. in

  1749. your

  1750. life

  1751. because

  1752. that's

  1753. what

  1754. glorifying

  1755. God

  1756. is

  1757. all

  1758. about.

  1759. For

  1760. God

  1761. to

  1762. express

  1763. how

  1764. great

  1765. he

  1766. is

  1767. and

  1768. you've

  1769. read

  1770. the

  1771. books

  1772. you've

  1773. heard

  1774. the

  1775. stories

  1776. your

  1777. life

  1778. is

  1779. a

  1780. story

  1781. isn't

  1782. it?

  1783. Your

  1784. life

  1785. is

  1786. a

  1787. story

  1788. that's

  1789. being

  1790. written.

  1791. Your

  1792. life

  1793. is

  1794. a

  1795. story

  1796. listening

  1797. to

  1798. what

  1799. I'm

  1800. saying

  1801. some

  1802. of

  1803. you

  1804. are

  1805. nodding

  1806. but

  1807. most

  1808. of

  1809. you

  1810. are

  1811. listening

  1812. then

  1813. the

  1814. story

  1815. is

  1816. not

  1817. over.

  1818. The

  1819. story

  1820. is

  1821. not

  1822. over.

  1823. Your

  1824. life

  1825. my

  1826. life

  1827. is

  1828. a

  1829. story

  1830. that

  1831. God

  1832. is

  1833. writing.

  1834. It's

  1835. not

  1836. over.

  1837. Don't

  1838. write

  1839. the

  1840. end

  1841. of

  1842. the

  1843. script

  1844. for

  1845. God

  1846. please.

  1847. He's

  1848. writing

  1849. his

  1850. own

  1851. story

  1852. with

  1853. your

  1854. life

  1855. that

  1856. will

  1857. satisfy

  1858. you

  1859. and

  1860. glorify

  1861. him.

  1862. Let

  1863. him

  1864. finish

  1865. the

  1866. end.

  1867. The

  1868. final point

  1869. is simply

  1870. that God

  1871. doesn't do

  1872. dead

  1873. ends.

  1874. God

  1875. doesn't do

  1876. dead

  1877. ends.

  1878. Right?

  1879. He

  1880. causes

  1881. all

  1882. things

  1883. to work

  1884. together

  1885. for

  1886. good.

  1887. He

  1888. doesn't

  1889. do

  1890. dead

  1891. ends.

  1892. There's

  1893. nothing

  1894. like that

  1895. in

  1896. scripture.

  1897. Nothing

  1898. like that

  1899. in

  1900. scripture.

  1901. Causes

  1902. all

  1903. things

  1904. to

  1905. work

  1906. together

  1907. the

  1908. good

  1909. of

  1910. those

  1911. who

  1912. love

  1913. God

  1914. and

  1915. are

  1916. called

  1917. according

  1918. to

  1919. their

  1920. own

  1921. purpose.

  1922. Right?

  1923. No.

  1924. His

  1925. purpose.

  1926. His

  1927. purpose.

  1928. His

  1929. purpose.

  1930. For

  1931. your

  1932. life.

  1933. His

  1934. purpose.

  1935. There

  1936. was a

  1937. time,

  1938. I'm

  1939. sure,

  1940. for

  1941. all

  1942. of

  1943. you,

  1944. where

  1945. you

  1946. gave,

  1947. we

  1948. often

  1949. put

  1950. salvation

  1951. in

  1952. these

  1953. terms.

  1954. We

  1955. say

  1956. that

  1957. there

  1958. was

  1959. a

  1960. point

  1961. in

  1962. my

  1963. life

  1964. where

  1965. I

  1966. gave

  1967. my

  1968. life

  1969. to

  1970. Christ.

  1971. Or

  1972. I

  1973. gave

  1974. my

  1975. heart

  1976. to

  1977. the

  1978. Lord.

  1979. It's

  1980. not

  1981. quite

  1982. biblical

  1983. terminology,

  1984. but

  1985. we

  1986. know

  1987. what

  1988. we

  1989. mean.

  1990. It was

  1991. a

  1992. point

  1993. in

  1994. my

  1995. life

  1996. where

  1997. I

  1998. gave

  1999. my

  2000. life

  2001. to

  2002. Christ.

  2003. Oh,

  2004. really?

  2005. So what

  2006. do you

  2007. do?

  2008. It's like

  2009. the

  2010. Israelites

  2011. saying,

  2012. you know,

  2013. God is

  2014. leading us

  2015. out.

  2016. We're

  2017. trusting

  2018. God to

  2019. lead us

  2020. out.

  2021. First

  2022. little blip

  2023. that they

  2024. hit,

  2025. they want

  2026. to go

  2027. back to

  2028. Egypt.

  2029. God

  2030. doesn't do

  2031. dead ends

  2032. according

  2033. to his

  2034. purpose.

  2035. His

  2036. purpose

  2037. doesn't

  2038. include

  2039. dead ends

  2040. for us.

  2041. It does

  2042. not include

  2043. dead ends.

  2044. Isaiah

    Isaiah 46:10

  2045. 46,

  2046. verse 10,

  2047. declaring

  2048. the end

  2049. from the

  2050. beginning

  2051. and from

  2052. ancient

  2053. times,

  2054. things

  2055. which

  2056. have

  2057. not

  2058. been

  2059. done,

  2060. saying,

  2061. my

  2062. purpose

  2063. will

  2064. be

  2065. established

  2066. and I

  2067. will

  2068. accomplish

  2069. all

  2070. of my

  2071. good

  2072. pleasure.

  2073. That is

  2074. what God

  2075. is doing

  2076. in your

  2077. life.

  2078. That is

  2079. what God

  2080. has

  2081. promised

  2082. to do

  2083. in your

  2084. life.

  2085. As a

  2086. follower

  2087. of

  2088. Christ,

  2089. it doesn't

  2090. sound like

  2091. a dead

  2092. end to

  2093. me.

  2094. God

  2095. doesn't

  2096. do

  2097. dead

  2098. ends.

  2099. He

  2100. does

  2101. justification.

  2102. He

  2103. does

  2104. sanctification.

  2105. He

  2106. does

  2107. new

  2108. life,

  2109. not

  2110. dead

  2111. ends.

  2112. God

  2113. does

  2114. new

  2115. life.

  2116. That's

  2117. his

  2118. purpose

  2119. for

  2120. us.

  2121. So

  2122. shall we

  2123. read how

  2124. the story

  2125. ends?

  2126. Let's

  2127. read how

  2128. the story

  2129. ends.

  2130. You

  2131. guys

  2132. know how

  2133. the story

  2134. ends,

  2135. but it's

  2136. always good

  2137. to read

  2138. these

  2139. things,

  2140. even

  2141. though you

  2142. know the

  2143. end of

  2144. the story,

  2145. right?

  2146. Every

  2147. time I

  2148. get to

  2149. these

  2150. stories

  2151. in the

  2152. Bible,

  2153. I

  2154. read it

  2155. a hundred

  2156. times,

  2157. a thousand

  2158. times.

  2159. I

  2160. just

  2161. love to

  2162. read them

  2163. again.

  2164. It's

  2165. like

  2166. watching a

  2167. movie where

  2168. you just

  2169. love that

  2170. bit and

  2171. you kind

  2172. of know

  2173. what's

  2174. coming,

  2175. but you

  2176. enjoy

  2177. watching it

  2178. over and

  2179. over again.

  2180. Verse 13.

  2181. So

  2182. Moses said

  2183. to the

  2184. people,

  2185. don't be

  2186. afraid,

  2187. stand still

  2188. and see

  2189. the salvation

  2190. of the

  2191. Lord,

  2192. which he

  2193. will

  2194. accomplish

  2195. for you

  2196. today.

  2197. Don't even

  2198. have to

  2199. wait till

  2200. tomorrow.

  2201. He's going

  2202. to do it

  2203. for you

  2204. today.

  2205. for the

  2206. Egyptians

  2207. whom you

  2208. see today,

  2209. you shall

  2210. see again

  2211. no more

  2212. forever.

  2213. The Lord

  2214. will fight

  2215. for you

  2216. and you

  2217. shall hold

  2218. your peace.

  2219. The Lord

  2220. said to

  2221. Moses,

  2222. why do you

  2223. cry to

  2224. me?

  2225. Tell the

  2226. children of

  2227. Israel to

  2228. go forward.

  2229. Where?

  2230. Go

  2231. forward,

  2232. lift up

  2233. your rod,

  2234. stretch out

  2235. your hand

  2236. over the

  2237. sea and

  2238. divide it.

  2239. The

  2240. children of

  2241. Israel shall

  2242. go on

  2243. dry ground

  2244. through the

  2245. midst of

  2246. the sea.

  2247. And I

  2248. indeed will

  2249. harden the

  2250. hearts of

  2251. the Egyptians

  2252. and they

  2253. shall follow

  2254. them and

  2255. so I

  2256. will glorify

  2257. myself or

  2258. gain honor

  2259. over Pharaoh

  2260. and all his

  2261. army, his

  2262. chariots,

  2263. his horsemen.

  2264. The Egyptians

  2265. shall know

  2266. that I am

  2267. the Lord and

  2268. I have

  2269. gained honor.

  2270. I have

  2271. glorified

  2272. myself over

  2273. Pharaoh and

  2274. his chariots

  2275. and his

  2276. horsemen.

  2277. The angel

  2278. of God who

  2279. went before

  2280. the camp of

  2281. Israel moved

  2282. and went

  2283. behind them

  2284. and the

  2285. pillar of

  2286. cloud went

  2287. from before

  2288. them and

  2289. stood behind

  2290. them.

  2291. So it

  2292. came between

  2293. the camp

  2294. of Egyptians

  2295. and the

  2296. camp of

  2297. Israel.

  2298. Thus it

  2299. was a

  2300. cloud and

  2301. darkness to

  2302. come to

  2303. the one and

  2304. gave light

  2305. by night to

  2306. the other so

  2307. that the one

  2308. did not come

  2309. near the other

  2310. all that night.

  2311. The Moses

  2312. stretched out

  2313. his hand over

  2314. the sea and

  2315. the Lord

  2316. caused the

  2317. sea to go

  2318. back by a

  2319. strong east

  2320. wind all that

  2321. night and

  2322. made the sea

  2323. into dry

  2324. land and

  2325. the waters

  2326. were divided.

  2327. So the

  2328. children of

  2329. Israel went

  2330. into the

  2331. midst of

  2332. the sea.

  2333. It's where

  2334. they were

  2335. afraid they

  2336. were going

  2337. to go.

  2338. But they

  2339. went into the

  2340. midst of the

  2341. sea on dry

  2342. ground.

  2343. Wow.

  2344. Wow.

  2345. Into the

  2346. midst of the

  2347. sea on dry

  2348. ground and

  2349. the waters

  2350. were a wall

  2351. to them on

  2352. the right

  2353. hand and

  2354. on the left.

  2355. the Egyptians

  2356. pursued and

  2357. went after

  2358. them into

  2359. the midst

  2360. of the sea

  2361. and Pharaoh's

  2362. horses his

  2363. chariots and

  2364. his horsemen.

  2365. Now it came

  2366. to pass in

  2367. the morning

  2368. at the

  2369. morning watch

  2370. that the

  2371. Lord looked

  2372. down.

  2373. Here he is

  2374. seeing

  2375. everything.

  2376. The Lord

  2377. looked down

  2378. upon the

  2379. army of the

  2380. Egyptians

  2381. through the

  2382. pillar of

  2383. fire and

  2384. the cloud

  2385. and he

  2386. troubled the

  2387. army of

  2388. the Egyptians

  2389. and he

  2390. took off

  2391. their chariot

  2392. wheels.

  2393. What an

  2394. incredible sight

  2395. that must have

  2396. been.

  2397. It would be

  2398. like blowing

  2399. out tires

  2400. left right

  2401. and center

  2402. wouldn't it?

  2403. You know

  2404. they're cruising

  2405. in there just

  2406. thinking the

  2407. Israelites are

  2408. right within

  2409. our grasp and

  2410. it's like a

  2411. cartoon isn't

  2412. it?

  2413. Just about ready

  2414. to get there

  2415. and they blow

  2416. their tires out

  2417. and the wheels

  2418. are coming off

  2419. their chariots.

  2420. I'm sure you

  2421. could probably

  2422. make something

  2423. of a cartoon

  2424. out of this.

  2425. So that they

  2426. drove them with

  2427. difficulty and

  2428. the Egyptians

  2429. said let us

  2430. flee from the

  2431. face of Israel

  2432. for the Lord

  2433. fights for

  2434. them against

  2435. the Egyptians.

  2436. Now what was

  2437. completely unseen

  2438. to Egypt and

  2439. to Israel

  2440. God is beginning

  2441. to expose.

  2442. He's taking the

  2443. cover off and

  2444. they're beginning

  2445. to see what's

  2446. really going on.

  2447. Who's really in

  2448. control?

  2449. Who's really in

  2450. charge?

  2451. And the Lord

  2452. said to Moses

  2453. stretch out your

  2454. hand over the

  2455. sea so that the

  2456. waters may come

  2457. back upon the

  2458. Egyptians on their

  2459. chariots and on

  2460. their horsemen.

  2461. And Moses stretched

  2462. out his hand over

  2463. the sea and

  2464. when the morning

  2465. appeared the sea

  2466. returned to its

  2467. full depth while

  2468. the Egyptians were

  2469. fleeing into it.

  2470. So the Lord

  2471. overthrew the

  2472. Egyptians in the

  2473. midst of the sea.

  2474. Then the waters

  2475. returned and

  2476. covered the

  2477. chariots and the

  2478. horsemen and all

  2479. the army of Pharaoh

  2480. that came into the

  2481. sea after them.

  2482. Not so much as

  2483. one of them

  2484. remained.

  2485. But the

  2486. children of Israel

  2487. had walked,

  2488. on dry land,

  2489. in the midst of

  2490. the sea.

  2491. I love that.

  2492. I love that

  2493. picture.

  2494. Absolutely love

  2495. that picture.

  2496. I think I'm going

  2497. down for the third

  2498. time, right?

  2499. I'm in a situation

  2500. about that.

  2501. I think I'm going

  2502. down for the third

  2503. time in the midst

2504. of the sea when in

  2505. actual fact God's

  2506. got my feet on

  2507. solid ground.

  2508. The waters are a

  2509. wall on the right

  2510. and the wall to

  2511. the left.

  2512. So the Lord

  2513. saved Israel that

  2514. day out of the

  2515. hand of the

  2516. Egyptians and

  2517. Israel saw the

  2518. Egyptians dead on

  2519. the seashore.

  2520. Thus Israel saw

  2521. the great work

  2522. which the Lord

  2523. had done in

  2524. Egypt.

  2525. So the people

  2526. feared the

  2527. Lord.

  2528. Somebody once

  2529. said, right,

  2530. fear the Lord and

  2531. there's nothing

  2532. else to fear.

  2533. Just the day

  2534. before they were

  2535. so frightened.

  2536. They were begging

  2537. to go back to

  2538. Egypt.

  2539. And now their

  2540. eyes are in the

  2541. right place.

  2542. Do they stay in

  2543. the right place

  2544. henceforth forever

  2545. more?

  2546. No.

  2547. Get to chapter 15

  2548. and they're right

  2549. back to complaining

  2550. again.

  2551. So, you know,

2552. I mean, God is so

  2553. patient with us,

  2554. isn't he?

  2555. He delivers us.

  2556. We fear him.

2557. Okay, Lord, I get it.

  2558. I get it.

  2559. I get it.

  2560. I'll never complain

  2561. again.

  2562. God is so patient

  2563. with us, isn't he?

  2564. He knows our

  2565. frame, Psalm 103

  2566. says.

  2567. He knows our

  2568. frame that we

  2569. are but dust.

  2570. Dust is pretty

  2571. low, isn't it?

  2572. Dust is pretty

  2573. low and yet God

  2574. loves dust.

  2575. God loves the

  2576. dust that we

  2577. are.

  2578. God loves the

  2579. dust that we

  2580. are.

  2581. So much so that

  2582. he would do all

  2583. that he's done for

  2584. us in Christ.

  2585. He loves the

  2586. dust.

  2587. He knows we're

  2588. dust.

  2589. Listen, he knows

  2590. we're weak.

  2591. He knows that he's

  2592. going to deliver

  2593. us.

  2594. He knows that

  2595. when he delivers

  2596. us, we're going

  2597. to feel great and

  2598. we're going to

  2599. make all kinds of

  2600. promises.

  2601. 99% of which

  2602. we're probably

  2603. not going to

  2604. keep.

  2605. He knows that.

  2606. And he's

  2607. patient and we

  2608. cry out to him.

  2609. He comes back

  2610. and he delivers

  2611. us again.

  2612. So dead end

  2613. or awesome God,

  2614. right?

  2615. Dead end or

  2616. awesome God.

  2617. Whatever comes

  2618. our way in the

  2619. week ahead or

  2620. the month ahead

  2621. or the year

  2622. ahead or the

  2623. life ahead,

  2624. whatever it is,

  2625. these things have

  2626. been written for

  2627. our instruction,

  2628. guys.

  2629. These things have

  2630. been written for

  2631. our instruction.

  2632. Okay, so God

  2633. intends for us to

  2634. learn.

  2635. He intends for us

  2636. to read his

  2637. loving heart,

  2638. his loving care,

  2639. his delivering

  2640. purposes.

  2641. He intends for

  2642. us to get it.

  2643. He wants us to

  2644. get it.

  2645. So that whatever

  2646. comes our way,

  2647. I don't know what's

  2648. coming tomorrow.

  2649. Do you?

  2650. I don't know what's

  2651. coming tomorrow.

  2652. But I know

  2653. whatever comes,

  2654. God's promises are

  2655. sure.

  2656. He's the same God

  2657. yesterday, today,

  2658. forever.

  2659. He'll be there for

  2660. me.

  2661. He'll be there for

  2662. you.

  2663. He'll rescue

  2664. those that he

  2665. loves,

  2666. and he'll bring

  2667. glory to his

  2668. great name.

  2669. And we will

  2670. have the delight

  2671. of knowing

  2672. that we have

  2673. been able to

  2674. participate

  2675. in the world,

  2676. seeing something

  2677. of the greatness

  2678. of God,

  2679. as he displays

  2680. that in our lives,

  2681. through the

  2682. circumstances of

  2683. our lives,

  2684. as we trust him

  2685. and follow him

  2686. faithfully.

  2687. Well, let's pray.

  2688. Father, we thank

  2689. you for the

  2690. story that comes

  2691. to us here in

  2692. Exodus and all

  2693. through your word,

  2694. really.

  2695. We thank you for

  2696. the greatness of

  2697. who you've revealed

  2698. yourself to be.

  2699. Lord, we are so

  2700. weak, so fickle,

  2701. so fallen, so

  2702. prone to wander,

  2703. so prone to

  2704. lack confidence.

  2705. But we pray that

  2706. something of what

  2707. we've been able to

  2708. participate in today

  2709. as we've worshipped

  2710. you together and

  2711. spent time in your

  2712. word would really,

  2713. really make a

  2714. difference in our

  2715. lives tomorrow,

  2716. that we might

  2717. leave from this

  2718. place,

  2719. committed to put

  2720. our faith and

  2721. trust in you,

  2722. and to give you

  2723. all the glory

  2724. and all the honor

  2725. for all that you

  2726. do in our lives.

  2727. In Jesus' name,

  2728. Amen.
