  1. You might be wondering why, when I've got the whole Bible to choose from this evening,

  2. I decided to speak on refreshers.

  3. It wasn't just so I could put some packs of sweets on your pews, but please do feel to

  4. suck or to crunch if it still takes you while I'm speaking.

  5. The reason why I've chosen to speak on this is to do with 2 Timothy.

  6. We've just finished 2 Timothy, and in 2 Timothy there's a character called Onesiphorus.

  7. Onesiphorus, I think, is one of the great unsung heroes of the New Testament.

  8. He's been described as Paul's pastor because he was the man who went to Paul when he was

  9. in prison and who ministered to him.

  10. And I was thinking in a slightly random way that Onesiphorus sounds a bit like Onesimus.

  11. Onesimus is the subject, as you know, of the book of Philemon.

  12. The two names mean much the same thing.

  13. They're people who are profitable.

  14. I then thought, oh, these two men actually have quite a lot of similarities.

  15. They came from fairly close together.

  16. Onesimus was from Colossae, and Onesiphorus was from Ephesus, both in what was then Asia,

  17. the province of Asia, today part of Turkey.

  18. Both men ended up in Rome.

  19. Onesiphorus, perhaps they're in business.

  20. Onesimus, because he had run away from his master Philemon.

  21. Both men, when they were in Rome, met Paul.

  22. Now, not at the same time, because Onesimus was during Paul's first imprisonment in Rome

  23. when he was under house arrest.

  24. Onesiphorus was towards the end when Paul was in trial for his life.

  25. So it was during Paul's second and much more arduous imprisonment.

  26. And Paul wrote very warmly about both of them to Philemon and to Timothy.

  27. And in writing about them, both times Paul wrote about being refreshed.

  28. That eventually got to the point.

  29. Paul wrote about being refreshed.

  30. And I thought, this is something that was obviously really important to Paul.

  31. That these men had refreshed him, and it made quite a big difference to him in difficult circumstances.

  32. I thought, I can't remember ever hearing anyone speaking about being a refresher.

  33. I've heard of people speaking about encouraging, usually using Barnabas as the prime example.

  34. But never heard of anyone speaking about what it means to refresh others.

  35. So I thought, this evening, we'll redress the balance a bit.

  36. We're going to think about the importance of refreshing others.

  37. And we're going to encourage each other to be refreshers.

  38. I'm going to do something that's a little bit different from the normal this evening.

  39. I'm going to name names.

  40. So as we go along, I'm going to mention a few people who I think are really good examples in our church.

  41. Of those who show the characteristics of refreshers.

  42. Now, please don't be offended if I don't mention you.

  43. You may well be as good as anyone else at it.

  44. And it's just I didn't have to think of you.

  45. They're only examples.

  46. But I think it's good to recognize these people.

  47. And we'll come back to that towards the end.

  48. The importance of recognizing other people.

  49. But let's begin with God's word.

  50. We're going to read a few verses from Philemon and then a few verses from 2 Timothy.

  51. If you want to turn to them.

  52. It's Philemon.

  53. Only has one chapter.

  54. So nice and easy.

  55. And we're going to read verse 7 and then from verse 20 onwards.

  56. So Paul writes to Philemon, your love has given me great joy and encouragement because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord's people.

  57. And then he goes on a bit and he has his appeal to Philemon about Onesimus explaining how he's become a Christian, asking him to receive him back.

  58. And in verse 20, he says, I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord.

  59. Refresh my heart in Christ.

  60. Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

  61. So that's Philemon and Onesimus.

  62. Let's move over to 2 Timothy.

  63. 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  64. And just a few verses to talk about Onesiphorus there.

  65. 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  66. I'm reading from verse 16.

  67. And Paul writes,

  68. May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

  69. On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me.

  70. May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day.

  71. You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.

  72. Now we will read a few more verses as we go along this evening.

  73. But for the moment, I'm sure God will bless his word to us.

  74. So what does it mean to refresh somebody?

  75. Well, I think the best way to understand that is to understand a little bit about the Greek word that is translated as refresh in our New Testament.

  76. And it's exactly the same Greek word as it's used elsewhere to talk about rest.

  77. Rest.

  78. So rest and refresh, the most common word for refresh in the New Testament, they're the same word.

  79. Now I guess we could say that rest is what I do to myself.

  80. I have a rest.

  81. I go to sleep or whatever.

  82. Refreshment is what I do to somebody else.

  83. I rest them.

  84. I give them rest.

  85. Now sometimes that could be in a literal, physical sense.

  86. That we say to someone, I want to help you in your work for the Lord.

  87. I want to give you a bit of a break from it.

  88. And I'll take over what you're doing for a while.

  89. A true example, a few weeks ago, John Gemmo came to me and he said,

  90. you don't need to come to Friday Fun Zone this evening.

  91. I'll do your door duty for you.

  92. Now I love being at the door at Friday Fun Zone.

  93. It's a great privilege.

  94. But I was quite tired.

  95. There were family reasons why it was quite good to be at home.

  96. And I was really glad of that period of rest.

  97. It wasn't exactly a three-month sabbatical, but it really meant quite a lot to me.

  98. And I think it's really good we all need rest from a Christian activity.

  99. Sometimes we can say to someone, assuming we've got the gifts and the ability to do it,

  100. I'll just take your duty for a short time to give you a rest from it.

  101. But I don't think that's actually the main meaning of the word refresh or what rest means in this context.

  102. It's not rest from work, I'd suggest.

  103. It's rest in work.

  104. So refreshing is about reviving us in the work we're doing.

  105. It is about re-energizing us.

  106. It is about giving us a real peace and a confidence in what we do at a time when we might be flagging,

  107. when we might be finding things a little bit difficult.

  108. And I think rest is different from encouragement in an important sense.

  109. Now, the two are obviously quite related.

  110. Encouragers will also be good refreshers.

  111. But I suggest encouragement is largely something that we focus on with younger Christians.

  112. Christians, we want to encourage younger Christians to serve the Lord and to be involved in service.

  113. And we encourage them to do things.

  114. And we encourage them in the things they do to help them to develop.

  115. And that's great.

  116. And that is a very, very important ministry.

  117. If we think of Barnabas as being the classic example of an encourager, who did he encourage?

  118. He encouraged the young church at Jerusalem when he sold his field.

  119. He encouraged the apostle Paul as he was a young Christian.

  120. He went and got him from Tarsus and took him to Antioch.

  121. He encouraged the young church at Antioch, young Christians there.

  122. He encouraged his nephew John Mark, again a young Christian.

  123. And he didn't give up on him when Mark failed the first time round.

  124. So largely, not entirely, but largely the ministry of encouragement is directed towards younger Christians.

  125. I suggest the ministry of refreshment is more often directed towards those who've been on the road for a while.

  126. We're just starting out in a race.

  127. Then we don't generally need a rest very quickly.

  128. As we're going on, as we've been doing it for quite a long time, at that point we've reached the stage where actually a rest and refreshment is something that we really need.

  129. So I wouldn't make too big a distinction in it, but I think probably refreshment is more helping those who've been on the road for a while to keep going in their ministry.

  130. And hopefully encouragement is helping those who are just starting out in their ministry for the Lord.

  131. Now before we think about these two characters, particularly a few others in the New Testament,

  132. I thought it would be good to think for a few minutes, well why is it that we need refreshers?

  133. Why do we need to be refreshed?

  134. And as we think about this, we're also going to note that refreshment is very much a work of God.

  135. We'll think about what God does over the next few minutes, and then we'll think of some of the examples in the New Testament and one or two from Brunsfield a little bit later on.

  136. So why do we need refreshers?

  137. Well we need refreshers when we're going through times of difficulty.

  138. We have Paul here in 2 Timothy, and he's in prison.

  139. And everyone has deserted him, and he's on trial for his life.

  140. And it really means a lot to him that someone is able to come in and to refresh him and to revitalise and revive him and give him something of the joy of the Lord again.

  141. And in lots of circumstances, we probably need that too when we face problems in our lives.

  142. Not hopefully imprisonment, but if we have problems with illness, with work, with family.

  143. And lots of different situations where something happens in our life, and we think this is making the going really hard for me.

  144. And someone can then come along and help us and refresh us in our time of difficulty.

  145. There's a verse in 2 Peter.

  146. 1 Peter 4, where Peter writes,

  147. What does it mean the Spirit rests?

  148. The Spirit's not taking a rest.

  149. The Spirit resting on you, I think, is the Spirit refreshing you, reviving you, revitalising you.

  150. You're being insulted for the name of the Lord.

  151. You're being persecuted in your Christian faith.

  152. And in a very special way, the Spirit is then there with you and helping and encouraging and strengthening you.

  153. And when we go through times of difficulty, it's great to know that alongside our human refreshers,

  154. we have the Spirit of God who is resting on us and who is helping us to get through our time of difficulty.

  155. So we need refreshment because we all have from time to time problems in our lives.

  156. We need refreshers too because we suffer from weariness.

  157. Dale Ralph Davis had a couple of expressions I quite liked to do with this.

  158. He says,

  159. Most Christians aren't run over, but they're quite often run down.

  160. In other words, we don't have all these big crises sometimes in our lives,

  161. but for a lot of us, we just gradually get wearier and wearier.

  162. And the other thing he said is,

  163. You tend not to get zapped in Christian ministry, but you often get sapped.

  164. So in other words, you don't again have the big thing that knocks you out,

  165. but just the regular working, serving the Lord, serving his people,

  166. it can lead for us to times of weariness.

  167. You may guess where I'm going now in the scripture.

  168. Matthew chapter 11, the Lord Jesus says,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  169. Come to me, oh, you are wearied and burdened,

  170. and I will give you rest or I will refresh you.

  171. The Lord doesn't say, I'm not going to stop you doing any work.

  172. The Lord is saying, I'm going to come alongside you,

  173. and I'm going to help you take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  174. for I am gentle and humble in heart,

  175. and you will find rest, you will find refreshment for your souls.

  176. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

  177. And when we come across situations where we are wearier,

  178. and I guess all of us involved in Christian service from time to time,

  179. we experience that weariness.

  180. It's good if we can know the presence of the Lord with us,

  181. to reflect on the fact that he has been through a life of total devotion

  182. to his Father and to serving others.

  183. And he is willing to come alongside us and to teach us.

  184. And when he does that, he will refresh us.

  185. He will give us rest for our souls.

  186. So we need refreshers.

  187. We need refreshment because we get weary.

  188. And then thirdly, I think we need refreshment from time to time

  189. because we can get discouraged.

  190. One of the greatest things, I think, that brings down people in Christian work

  191. is when they've been doing something for a long time

  192. and either not really seeing the results that they'd hoped for,

  193. or whether something happens that seems to damage or destroy

  194. the ministry they've been working on for a long time.

  195. One of the things I particularly realised through being more involved

  196. in the work in Pilton and Muir House

  197. is how much the normal things that come across Christian workers

  198. are there to an even greater extent

  199. and can happen an awful lot more quickly.

  200. A few years ago, Bridget and I went to a Scripture Union event.

  201. And at that event, the programme had the story

  202. of one of the young people from Muir House on the back.

  203. And people were really thrilled at what God was doing.

  204. And then just a fairly short time afterwards,

  205. this particular young person decided

  206. they didn't want to follow Jesus anymore

  207. and that they weren't going to live as a Christian.

  208. And you can imagine for those involved in a work like that,

  209. you've got someone who seems to be doing really well

  210. and then suddenly they've gone back.

  211. And you see that quite regularly, I think,

  212. in the kind of work that John and Peter and the others

  213. are involved in Muir House.

  214. And just from time to time,

  215. you can just see their heads going down a little bit

  216. if there's been a few things on the go

  217. and then they revive, they get encouraged again

  218. and they pick up.

  219. And for all of us, there is that danger of discouragement.

  220. If you're really involved, you're really passionate

  221. about a work for the Lord,

  222. there is a danger at times you will get quite discouraged in it.

  223. A couple of verses from the Old Testament.

  224. I'm slightly shorned in here,

  225. but there are ones I wanted to refer to this evening.

  226. I think they probably fit in this context.

  227. Psalm 23.

  228. This is the NIV translation.

  229. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  230. He leads me beside quiet waters.

  231. He refreshes my soul.

  232. The traditional version, of course,

  233. he restores my soul means very much the same thing.

  234. So when we go through times of discouragement,

  235. what should we do?

  236. We should look to the Lord.

  237. We should recognize that he is the one who is able to give us rest

  238. and to refresh us.

  239. Perhaps we should go away to the quiet place,

  240. the quiet waters,

  241. where he's able to speak to us

  242. and to minister to us

  243. and our souls will be refreshed.

  244. And a few sounds back from that,

  245. Psalm 19.

  246. Psalm 19, which talks to us about the wonders of creation

  247. and then talks to us about the greatness of the law.

  248. And Psalm 19, verse 7 says,

    Psalms 19:7

  249. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.

  250. So if we're discouraged, if we're finally going hard,

  251. what do we do?

  252. Get our Bibles out.

  253. Look for what God has to say to us

  254. and he from his word will encourage

  255. and will strengthen and will revive us.

  256. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.

  257. Okay, so that by kind of way of a quite long introduction.

  258. Let's look now at some examples of refreshers

  259. from the New Testament,

  260. and particularly these two men.

  261. It's Philemon actually rather than Onesimus

  262. is the one Paul talks about refreshing others

  263. and then Onesiphorus.

  264. What are the characteristics that people might have

  265. if we call them refreshing?

  266. Now I think most of us will have a few of these,

  267. probably not all of them,

  268. so it's not by any means you have to have all of these

  269. to be able to refresh anybody,

  270. but they're the kind of things

  271. that might be a characteristic of those

  272. who refresh others.

  273. So I'm suggesting first of all

  274. that refreshers love people.

  275. First verse we read from Philemon,

  276. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement

  277. because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts

  278. of the Lord's people.

  279. And Paul very much emphasizes Philemon's love

  280. for the people of God in this short book.

  281. So I suggest refreshers love people.

  282. Now, as Christians, all of us should love people.

  283. We love God, we love our brothers and sisters,

  284. we love those who don't yet know the Lord Jesus,

  285. our neighbours in the world round about us.

  286. But some of us are better at expressing our love

  287. through service,

  288. and others are better at expressing their love

  289. through interacting with others.

  290. Some of us are kind of, by nature, backroom people,

  291. others are much better at talking to people,

  292. at encouraging, at refreshing them.

  293. One of the things that kind of excises

  294. the minds of the elders quite a lot,

  295. we had a discussion with John and Rachel about it

  296. just last week,

  297. is how we welcome and integrate people into the church.

  298. And one of the things that really concerns us

  299. is if people come into the church

  300. and they sit through the service and go out again,

  301. and they don't really have anyone talking to them

  302. or interacting with them.

  303. Now for some of us, that is quite a difficult thing to do,

  304. to interact.

  305. We have to really kind of force ourselves

  306. to go up and talk to strangers.

  307. Other people are really good at it,

  308. and I'm not saying it's easy for them,

  309. but it seems to come a lot more straightforwardly to them.

  310. They have that gift that they can interact well with people.

  311. I'm blessed with a wife who's like that,

  312. and quite often I'm able to go along

  313. when she's talked to someone,

  314. and I can kind of get the introduction

  315. without having to make the first approach myself.

  316. And that's quite a good thing to do.

  317. But some people, I think,

  318. are really good at talking to those whom they don't know.

  319. And some of us not so good,

  320. but we need to make a bit of effort.

  321. So there's one thing all of us could try to do.

  322. But in the particular context of Philemon,

  323. the way Philemon showed his love,

  324. especially to the people in Colossae,

  325. was he had the church,

  326. he had his home,

  327. in his home.

  328. He had the people along,

  329. he showed them hospitality.

  330. And that ministry of hospitality

  331. is something that is really important

  332. and is really valuable.

  333. And again,

  334. from a discussion with Johnny and Rachel on Tuesday,

  335. we will be making some suggestions

  336. over the next week while

  337. about how we as a church

  338. could be better perhaps

  339. at showing hospitality,

  340. particularly to new people

  341. when they come.

  342. Now there are lots of people already

  343. in this church

  344. who are very good

  345. at showing hospitality.

  346. And again,

  347. I'm going to,

  348. hopefully not be divisive

  349. by sending me out people,

  350. but I wanted to mention Ian and Nan,

  351. and I wanted to mention Ian and Nan particularly,

  352. because when our kids

  353. were a little bit younger

  354. a few years ago,

  355. they made a point

  356. of inviting them out

  357. separately from us.

  358. So it wasn't,

  359. we were invited along

  360. and the kids kind of

  361. came along with us.

  362. Ian and Nan

  363. invited our children together,

  364. gave them some identity

  365. and had something suitable

  366. for them that evening.

  367. Now lots of others said

  368. very good hospitality,

  369. I'm sure equally thoughtful

  370. in the way you go about it.

  371. But it's a really great ministry

  372. and a way to show

  373. God's love to others

  374. and to refresh them

  375. in their Christian life.

  376. Refreshers love people.

  377. Second thing I suggest

  378. is that refreshers

  379. recognize God's work.

  380. Refreshers look at something

  381. and they can say,

  382. I can really see God

  383. at work here

  384. and I'm rejoicing in it.

  385. That's what Paul's relying on

  386. with Philemon.

  387. Philemon's got this slave,

  388. Onesimus,

  389. who appears to have run away

  390. and perhaps stolen something

  391. from Philemon.

  392. And Paul is sending

  393. Onesimus back

  394. and saying,

  395. Philemon,

  396. he's become a Christian,

  397. he's now a brother

  398. in the Lord,

  399. will you receive him back?

  400. And fairly clearly,

  401. Paul is also saying,

  402. well not directly,

  403. will you receive him back

  404. but not as a slave, please?

  405. He's now your brother

  406. rather than being a slave.

  407. He does it very cleverly.

  408. And we read how Paul says

  409. that Philemon refreshes

  410. the hearts of God's people.

  411. A little bit later on,

  412. Paul says,

  413. Onesimus is my heart.

  414. And then second part we read,

  415. Paul says,

  416. refresh my heart.

  417. So very much directing Philemon

  418. to say you receive Onesimus back

  419. and you rejoice

  420. in what God has done

  421. in his life.

  422. And I'm quite sure Philemon did.

  423. But it would have been easy

  424. for someone in his situation

  425. to say,

  426. so Onesimus managed

  427. to get around Paul.

  428. He's pretended to be a Christian.

  429. I'm going to have nothing

  430. to do with him.

  431. And very important

  432. that he was able to see

  433. that God had worked

  434. in Onesimus' life

  435. and to be able to receive him

  436. as a brother

  437. in the Lord Jesus.

  438. There's another example

  439. Paul gives of refreshers.

  440. Next we read from Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  441. He says,

  442. this is writing to church in Rome,

  443. pray that I may be kept safe

  444. from the unbelievers in Judea

  445. and that the contribution

  446. I take to Jerusalem

  447. may be favorably received

  448. by the Lord's people there

  449. so that I may come to you

  450. with joy

  451. by God's will

  452. and in your company

  453. be refreshed.

  454. And actually probably better

  455. translated at the end of that,

  456. we can be refreshed together.

  457. That's the sense of the word

  458. that Paul uses.

  459. So why are they going to be refreshed

  460. when Paul comes to Rome?

  461. Well it is Christian fellowship

  462. and enjoying being with one another.

  463. But I think particularly

  464. it is because of what Paul

  465. believes and hopes

  466. will have happened

  467. in Jerusalem.

  468. So there's the one thing

  469. about being preserved

  470. from those who are

  471. against the gospel.

  472. But more significantly here

  473. I think that Paul

  474. is looking for the favorable

  475. reception by God's people.

  476. Paul had gone round

  477. the churches

  478. of the ancient world

  479. and he said to them

  480. there's a famine in Judea,

  481. it would be really good

  482. if you could help out financially.

  483. And some of them

  484. had given spontaneously

  485. and generously

  486. like the church in Philippi.

  487. Others had given

  488. perhaps more reluctantly

  489. with a bit of a prod

  490. like the church in Corinth.

  491. But Paul had collected

  492. a significant amount

  493. that he could take back

  494. to Jerusalem.

  495. But there was a real danger

  496. that Paul might have

  497. got to Jerusalem

  498. and the church at Jerusalem

  499. would have said

  500. this is Gentile money,

  501. we can't receive it.

  502. We are Jews,

  503. they are Gentiles,

  504. we are not going to take

  505. the money

  506. that they have given

  507. for us.

  508. And Paul is praying

  509. that the Christians

  510. in Jerusalem

  511. will recognize

  512. that God has been at work

  513. in the Gentile world,

  514. that he has brought

  515. many there to know him

  516. and to trust in the Lord Jesus

  517. and that he has laid

  518. on their hearts

  519. to share fellowship

  520. with their brothers

  521. and sisters in Judea.

  522. And if the Christians

  523. in Jerusalem

  524. recognize that God

  525. had been at work

  526. in the Gentile church

  527. and rejoiced in the fact

  528. that they had given them

  529. this gift,

  530. then Paul would have been

  531. really refreshed

  532. in his ministry.

  533. And every indication

  534. I think that that is

  535. what happened

  536. with the church

  537. in Jerusalem.

  538. If the church

  539. had refused

  540. to accept the money

  541. and refused

  542. to see God's work in it,

  543. then it would have been

  544. really discouraging

  545. for Paul

  546. in what he had done.

  547. What does that mean for us?

  548. It means that we should look

  549. at what people are doing

  550. for the Lord

  551. and sometimes we'll look

  552. at it and say,

  553. well, I wouldn't do it

  554. that way.

  555. That's not the way

  556. we've done it in the past

  557. or that's not the modern

  558. way of doing it,

  559. whatever.

  560. Look at what people

  561. are doing for the Lord

  562. and say,

  563. is the Lord in it?

  564. And if the Lord is in it,

  565. we should rejoice

  566. as we recognize God

  567. at work.

  568. One of the things

  569. I find quite encouraging

  570. at Brantzfield,

  571. a few times I've heard

  572. people say,

  573. well, I'm not that happy

  574. with some of the things

  575. that are being done

  576. at the moment.

  577. It's not the way

  578. I would do it,

  579. but God is clearly

  580. at work and so as a church

  581. we're moving forward

  582. and we can rejoice together.

  583. Really important

  584. that we recognize God's work

  585. and when we see someone

  586. doing God's work

  587. that we encourage them in it,

  588. even if it's not necessarily

  589. the way that we would have

  590. gone about it ourselves.

  591. So refreshers,

  592. recognize God's work.

  593. I'm going to move on

  594. to look at Onesiphorus now,

  595. so we're moving on

  596. to 2 Timothy

  597. and we have three points

  598. from him

  599. that I want to think about.

  600. And the first one is

  601. that refreshers are there

  602. when you need them.

  603. Paul is in Rome.

  604. Paul is in prison in Rome.

  605. He's going through,

  606. certainly in a physical sense,

  607. the lowest period

  608. of his life.

  609. He knows that he's coming

  610. towards the end.

  611. He knows it's very likely

  612. that he'll end up

  613. being executed

  614. and when he's in Rome

  615. he finds everyone

  616. is not wanting

  617. to associate with him.

  618. Those who had been involved

  619. in some way

  620. in his ministry,

  621. he mentions people

  622. like Phygelus

  623. and Hermogenes

  624. and he mentions

  625. the whole province of Asia

  626. having rejected him.

  627. These people,

  628. when Paul was going

  629. through his most difficult time,

  630. they weren't there for him.

  631. They weren't willing

  632. to stand with him

  633. when it came to the crunch

  634. and he was on trial

  635. for his life.

  636. Onesiphorus comes along

  637. and he's not ashamed

  638. of Paul's chains.

  639. He recognizes the work

  640. that Paul has done

  641. that has been of the Lord

  642. and he recognizes

  643. the benefit he's had,

  644. no doubt,

  645. from Paul

  646. in his own life

  647. and he's determined

  648. that he's going to spend

  649. time with Paul

  650. and to help him

  651. during his time

  652. in prison.

  653. So important,

  654. isn't it,

  655. that when people

  656. are going through

  657. times of difficulty,

  658. that we're there

  659. standing with them.

  660. Think of a few Christians

  661. who have gone through

  662. quite difficult periods

  663. in their lives

  664. and quite often

  665. they look back,

  666. I'm not saying

  667. this is a good thing too,

  668. but it does happen,

  669. quite often they look back

  670. and they'll think

  671. this person

  672. and that person,

  673. they supported me

  674. and they were there

  675. for me,

  676. but actually these people

  677. when I was going

  678. through times of difficulty

  679. they were nowhere

  680. to be seen,

  681. they were no help

  682. at all.

  683. And sometimes the people

  684. who were the most help

  685. were people you wouldn't

  686. have expected

  687. and the ones

  688. who weren't very helpful

  689. were people

  690. who you might have expected

  691. to be more involved

  692. in helping them.

  693. Very important

  694. if we are Christians

  695. that we stand together

  696. in the Lord Jesus.

  697. We're not just

  698. fair weather friends,

  699. happy to associate

  700. with others

  701. when it's an easy thing

  702. to do,

  703. when it's very pleasant

  704. to do it,

  705. but not around

  706. when people really

  707. need us.

  708. Onesiphorus,

  709. the refresher,

  710. he was there

  711. when Paul

  712. really needed him.

  713. Second point

  714. about Onesiphorus

  715. is that refreshers

  716. go the extra mile.

  717. Refreshers are willing

  718. to go above

  719. and beyond

  720. what might be

  721. expected of them.

  722. Onesiphorus

  723. comes to Rome

  724. and he can't find

  725. Paul very easily.

  726. Not very clear

  727. why he couldn't

  728. find Paul very easily

  729. but it was a bit

  730. difficult to find him.

  731. And you can imagine

  732. a lot of people

  733. that have spent

  734. a little time

  735. asking around

  736. and perhaps

  737. searching for Paul

  738. and when they

  739. couldn't find him

  740. they've said,

  741. well,

  742. I've made my effort,

  743. I've done my best,

  744. I'll go on now

  745. and I could tell

  746. people he just

  747. wasn't available

  748. to find.

  749. Onesiphorus

  750. doesn't like that.

  751. He goes around,

  752. I don't know if he

  753. says to people,

  754. where's the prisoner,

  755. have you seen Paul,

  756. whatever,

  757. and he goes around

  758. and with great difficulty

  759. he eventually

  760. finds Paul.

  761. And when he finds

  762. Paul,

  763. he just doesn't

  764. make a token visit

  765. and go once

  766. and try to

  767. encourage him

  768. and then go away

  769. and go about

  770. his business

  771. after that.

  772. Rather,

  773. Paul says,

  774. he often

  775. refreshed me,

  776. he often refreshed me

  777. and was not ashamed

  778. of my chains.

  779. here was a man

  780. who was really

  781. willing to put

  782. himself out

  783. for Paul

  784. to go the extra

  785. mile

  786. to serve

  787. the servant

  788. of the Lord.

  789. And important

  790. for us too

  791. to be like that.

  792. Extra mile

  793. is a great phrase,

  794. of course,

  795. it's from the Lord

  796. Jesus himself

  797. encouraging people

  798. if they're forced

  799. by a Roman soldier

  800. to carry a burden

  801. for one mile

  802. to go the second mile.

  803. I can just imagine

  804. the Roman soldier

  805. used to people

  806. cursing

  807. and being very

  808. reluctant to go

  809. even the first mile

  810. and if someone

  811. then volunteers

  812. and says,

  813. actually,

  814. I'll take you home,

  815. I'll go the second mile

  816. with you,

  817. what a refreshing thing

  818. that must have been

  819. for them

  820. in their work

  821. as a Roman soldier

  822. thinking it was

  823. not so bad

  824. after all

  825. with these people

  826. in Judea.

  827. And very good

  828. important for us

  829. that we are willing

  830. to go

  831. the extra mile

  832. in serving God.

  833. Embarrassment time

  834. again,

  835. example here,

  836. lots of examples

  837. of the church

  838. but I'm going to pick

  839. out Pete and Terry.

  840. Pete and Terry

  841. involved in loads

  842. of things in the church.

  843. If anything comes up

  844. that we ask for volunteers,

  845. almost always

  846. they're among the first

  847. to volunteer for it

  848. and even when

  849. they're not asked

  850. then they see things

  851. that need done

  852. and they just do them.

  853. And it's great

  854. to have people like that

  855. and there are others

  856. in Brunsfield,

  857. great to have people

  858. like that

  859. who don't say,

  860. well I will do this

  861. and this

  862. and then I think

  863. I've done my share

  864. for the church.

  865. I've done my duty,

  866. I've done as much

  867. as most people

  868. and that's it.

  869. We need people

  870. who are willing

  871. to go the extra mile

  872. and to serve

  873. selflessly

  874. and with real servant hearts

  875. for the Lord Jesus

  876. in the church

  877. and that is what

  878. really encourages

  879. the leadership of churches

  880. or any kind of Christian work

  881. when we see people

  882. growing in their faith

  883. and willing to serve

  884. others

  885. rather than look

  886. for their own comfort.

  887. Let's be people

  888. who go that extra mile.

  889. And then the final point

  890. about Onesiphorus

  891. refreshers leave you

  892. feeling better.

  893. Now it would have been

  894. possible for Onesiphorus

  895. to go around Rome

  896. to do all his

  897. searching for Paul

  898. to go and visit him

  899. fairly regularly

  900. and when he got to see Paul

  901. he could have said

  902. something like this

  903. well it's been really hard

  904. finding you Paul.

  905. I've spent hours

  906. wandering these dusty

  907. hot streets

  908. being quite dangerous

  909. talking to people

  910. about you

  911. because they might

  912. not like me

  913. associating with you

  914. and I found it really hard

  915. coming here.

  916. And the church in Ephesus

  917. were really not doing

  918. very well.

  919. Timothy's got a bit

  920. too big for his boots.

  921. He's just a young man

  922. but he thinks he can

  923. tell us what to do

  924. and he says he does it

  925. with your authority

  926. but no one really

  927. believes that.

  928. We've got people

  929. coming in,

  930. false teaching,

  931. all sorts of things

  932. going on.

  933. It's really quite

  934. discouraging.

  935. And there are people

  936. like that

  937. in Christian circles

  938. and churches.

  939. There are people

  940. when you talk to them

  941. they're always

  942. complaining.

  943. They're always

  944. unhappy with their lot.

  945. They're always

  946. complaining about

  947. other people

  948. about leadership

  949. or other people

  950. in the church

  951. and that seems

  952. to be the way

  953. they almost live

  954. their Christian lives.

  955. And you almost

  956. go away feeling

  957. really weary

  958. from talking to them

  959. rather than feeling

  960. encouraged.

  961. Really good

  962. if as Christians

  963. when we get together

  964. we can be

  965. encouragers,

  966. refreshers

  967. of one another.

  968. Now I don't know

  969. what Onesiphorus

  970. said to Paul

  971. but I would imagine

  972. that when he came

  973. to Paul

  974. he would take an

  975. interest in Paul's

  976. situation

  977. what were his needs

  978. was there anything

  979. he could do

  980. to help with them.

  981. They talk I'm sure

  982. about the Lord Jesus

  983. and about the suffering

  984. of the Lord

  985. and how our suffering

  986. however bad it seems

  987. there's nothing

  988. compared with that

  989. and all that he was

  990. willing to do for us.

  991. Perhaps they look

  992. forward to heaven

  993. knowing that Paul's

  994. life was nearly

  995. at an end

  996. and looking forward

  997. to the joy

  998. it would be

  999. to be received

  1000. and to receive

  1001. the crown of righteousness

1002. that was in store for him.

  1003. I don't know

  1004. that kind of thing.

  1005. Showing an interest

  1006. in Paul

  1007. and talking with him

  1008. about the Lord

  1009. and about spiritual things

1010. and that is the way

  1011. that we should be

  1012. with one another

  1013. if we really want

  1014. to refresh each other

  1015. in our Christian work.

  1016. Not complaining

  1017. not grumbling

  1018. and not depressing

  1019. one another

  1020. but rather trying

  1021. to encourage

  1022. and strengthen

  1023. one another

  1024. in our Christian faith.

  1025. Lots of examples

  1026. of that too

  1027. I'm going to pick

  1028. on Graham.

  1029. Graham's actually

  1030. gone out with

  1031. the young people

  1032. this evening.

  1033. Graham I've lost

1034. quite a number of times

1035. people have come to me

  1036. and they've said

  1037. something like

  1038. that Graham

  1039. he's a really nice

  1040. young man.

  1041. Now it's usually

  1042. ladies of a certain

  1043. vintage who said that

  1044. and I think

  1045. it doesn't sound

  1046. a very spiritual comment

  1047. to begin with

  1048. but I think

  1049. actually it is

  1050. because what

  1051. they've noticed

  1052. is that Graham

  1053. makes time for them

  1054. even if he's running

  1055. around busy

  1056. this morning

  1057. and he takes

  1058. a couple of minutes

  1059. just to speak

1060. and ask how they are

  1061. that he's interested

  1062. in them

  1063. and he's got

  1064. something spiritual

  1065. to help them with.

  1066. Now again

  1067. lots of other people

  1068. I could have chosen

  1069. but really good

  1070. if we can be

  1071. these kinds of people

  1072. who take an interest

  1073. in others

1074. and when we go away

  1075. they say

  1076. that was really good

  1077. it was good

1078. to talk about the Lord

  1079. and to be able

  1080. to share

  1081. my thoughts

  1082. and my issues

  1083. with somebody else

  1084. I feel a lot better

  1085. from that conversation.

  1086. Refreshers

  1087. leave you

  1088. feeling

  1089. better.

  1090. Some unlikely refreshers

  1091. refreshers

  1092. the church

  1093. in Corinth

  1094. the church

  1095. in Corinth

  1096. was Paul's

  1097. problem child

  1098. you read the two

  1099. epistles to the

  1100. Corinthians

  1101. and you think

  1102. what a terrible church

  1103. there are so many

  1104. problems

  1105. one after the other

  1106. there's immorality

  1107. there's snobbishness

  1108. there's all sorts

  1109. of things going on

  1110. that you think

  1111. this is a church

  1112. that is really

  1113. going through

  1114. difficult times

  1115. and Paul must have

  1116. been really

  1117. depressed

  1118. about it

  1119. and Paul writes

  1120. his first letter

  1121. he then says

  1122. another letter

  1123. which isn't

  1124. kept for us

  1125. in scripture

  1126. that was really

  1127. hard

  1128. firm letter

  1129. and then he sends

  1130. Titus to see them

  1131. and Titus to go

1132. and try to work out

  1133. where the church

  1134. is spiritually

  1135. now it's still

  1136. not perfect

  1137. read 2nd Corinthians

  1138. and there's still

  1139. loads of problems

  1140. there

  1141. but this is what

  1142. Paul says

  1143. about Titus'

  1144. visit

  1145. in addition to

  1146. our own

  1147. encouragement

  1148. we were especially

  1149. delighted to see

  1150. how happy Titus

  1151. was

  1152. because his spirit

  1153. has been

  1154. refreshed

  1155. by all of you

  1156. I have posted

  1157. to him about you

  1158. and you have

  1159. not embarrassed

  1160. me

  1161. so church

  1162. with lots of

  1163. issues

  1164. and lots of

  1165. things that

  1166. we would look at

  1167. and say

  1168. that's not

  1169. very satisfactory

  1170. and yet actually

  1171. when Titus went

  1172. there he could

  1173. see God

  1174. is at work

  1175. these people

  1176. are growing

  1177. in their faith

  1178. and I'm really

  1179. refreshed

  1180. and encouraged

  1181. and everything

  1182. that Paul said

  1183. about how good

  1184. they are

  1185. it's true

  1186. despite all the

  1187. issues

  1188. it's true

  1189. they are God's

  1190. people

  1191. I am refreshed

  1192. I am happy

  1193. because of them

  1194. again great

  1195. if people

  1196. coming among us

  1197. can come to us

  1198. and can say

  1199. I came here

  1200. I'd heard about

  1201. the church

  1202. at Bransfield

  1203. I heard you

  1204. got a good

  1205. welcome

  1206. I heard there

  1207. were some

  1208. fine Christians

  1209. here

  1210. I came

  1211. and it was

  1212. true

  1213. I was really

  1214. refreshed

  1215. from meeting

  1216. with God's

  1217. people

  1218. and sharing

  1219. with them

  1220. refreshers

  1221. leave you

  1222. feeling better

  1223. so five

  1224. simple points

  1225. refreshers

  1226. love people

  1227. we should be

  1228. those

  1229. who take

  1230. an interest

  1231. in others

  1232. and are

  1233. willing to

  1234. take when

  1235. they're

  1236. visitors

  1237. or people

  1238. others

  1239. don't talk

  1240. to

  1241. them

  1242. we recognize

  1243. God's work

  1244. we rejoice

  1245. in what God

  1246. is doing

  1247. even as not

  1248. being done

  1249. the way

  1250. that we

  1251. would have

  1252. done it

  1253. we're there

  1254. when people

  1255. need us

  1256. we're willing

  1257. to go that

  1258. extra mile

  1259. and we

  1260. leave people

  1261. feeling better

  1262. from having

  1263. had some

  1264. interaction

  1265. with us

  1266. let me

  1267. finish with

  1268. this

  1269. and this

  1270. is why

  1271. I've been

  1272. to a

  1273. limited extent

  1274. this evening

  1275. naming names

  1276. this is what

  1277. Paul writes

  1278. again to

  1279. Corinthians

  1280. 1 Corinthians

  1281. he says

  1282. I was glad

  1283. when Stephanus

  1284. Fortunatus

  1285. and Achaius

  1286. arrived

  1287. because they

  1288. have supplied

  1289. what was

  1290. lacking

  1291. from you

  1292. for they

  1293. refresh my

  1294. spirit

  1295. and yours

  1296. also

  1297. such men

  1298. deserve

  1299. recognition

  1300. now we don't

  1301. know what

  1302. these guys

  1303. have been

  1304. doing

  1305. and they've

  1306. obviously

  1307. done some

  1308. good work

  1309. in Corinth

  1310. and they

  1311. visited

  1312. Paul perhaps

  1313. and passed

  1314. on the

  1315. greetings

  1316. of the

  1317. Corinthian

  1318. Christians

  1319. and been

  1320. able to

  1321. help him

  1322. in the

  1323. way that

  1324. the others

  1325. hadn't

  1326. but Paul

  1327. says

  1328. people like

  1329. that

  1330. who just

  1331. go about

  1332. quietly

  1333. doing

  1334. Christian

  1335. work

  1336. encouraging

  1337. strengthening

  1338. others

  1339. refreshing

  1340. others

  1341. in their

  1342. faith

  1343. these

  1344. people

  1345. deserve

  1346. recognition

  1347. I'm not suggesting

  1348. we should have a

  1349. refresher of the month

  1350. board or anything

  1351. like that

  1352. but really good

  1353. within a church

  1354. and I've only mentioned

  1355. a few this evening

  1356. if there's someone

  1357. you think

  1358. some of these things

  1359. Ian's talked about

  1360. this evening

  1361. I really see them

  1362. in that person

  1363. go and tell them

  1364. encourage them

  1365. and recognize

  1366. what the Lord

  1367. is doing

  1368. in their

  1369. lives

  1370. again it's

  1371. something I will

  1372. encourage and

  1373. refresh them

  1374. and we'll guard

  1375. against the

  1376. weariness

  1377. discouragement

  1378. and so on

  1379. that we've

  1380. talked about

  1381. we should be

  1382. good at

  1383. recognizing our

  1384. Christian brothers

  1385. and sisters

  1386. the work of

  1387. the spirit

  1388. and what they

  1389. are doing

  1390. in building

  1391. God's church

  1392. and in

  1393. refreshing us

  1394. in our

  1395. ministry

  1396. so more

  1397. refreshers

  1398. please

  1399. is the

  1400. message

  1401. to see

  1402. think about

  1403. how you can

  1404. serve others

  1405. in the church

  1406. how you can

  1407. encourage and

  1408. strengthen them

  1409. in their faith

  1410. how you can

  1411. refresh them

  1412. when perhaps

  1413. they're flagging

  1414. then as a church

  1415. we'll be really

  1416. revitalized

  1417. and we'll have

  1418. a real joy

  1419. in serving the

  1420. Lord

  1421. and in living

  1422. for him

  1423. in our city

  1424. let's pray

  1425. together

  1426. Father we thank you

  1427. for your word

  1428. we thank you for

  1429. these two men

  1430. we thought about

  1431. and

  1432. I leave them

  1433. particularly

  1434. and Onesiphorus

  1435. we thank you

  1436. that they were

  1437. men who refreshed

  1438. others

  1439. who were

  1440. loving

  1441. who were

  1442. caring

  1443. who went

  1444. the extra

  1445. mile

  1446. who were

  1447. willing to

  1448. recognize

  1449. the work

  1450. that you

  1451. did

  1452. who left

  1453. others

  1454. feeling

  1455. better

  1456. for having

  1457. met them

  1458. we pray

  1459. that you

  1460. will help

  1461. us to be

  1462. like that

  1463. that we

  1464. may have

  1465. a ministry

  1466. of refreshment

  1467. in our church

  1468. that all of us

  1469. may be able

  1470. to support

  1471. and strengthen

  1472. one another

  1473. and that through

  1474. that we may

  1475. have a real

  1476. joy in the

  1477. Lord

  1478. we recognize

  1479. that ultimately

  1480. the work of

  1481. refreshment

  1482. is your work

  1483. it comes to

  1484. us through

  1485. the Spirit

  1486. and it's only

  1487. by the work

  1488. of the Spirit

  1489. changing our

  1490. lives

  1491. that we can

  1492. too become

  1493. refreshers

  1494. we pray to you

  1495. take your word

  1496. take what is

  1497. from yourself

  1498. use it

  1499. in our hearts

  1500. and our lives

  1501. that we live

  1502. lives that are

  1503. more honoring

  1504. to the Lord

  1505. Jesus

  1506. and more like

  1507. the perfect

  1508. life that he

  1509. lived

  1510. we give you

  1511. our thanks

  1512. in his name

  1513. Amen
