  1. Well, good evening. It is good to be together, even if it is a bit damp, and we're all feeling

  2. a little bit moist this evening. As Pete mentioned, this is the second in our series on Solomon.

  3. We've had last week and this week. Next week, Sunday evening, we have a break. The following

  4. two weeks, John will continue in Solomon's story. Those of you who were here last week,

  5. remember we talked about Solomon's slide with the overarching theme of these four evenings on

  6. Solomon. How does the wisest of Israel's kings, so favored by God, seemingly start so well and yet

  7. finish so badly? Thinking about last night and tonight, there's no surprise ending. We know the

  8. story, and it's not a sort of cliffhanger. There's no spoiler alert. You know things are going to end

  9. wrong. It feels a little bit awkward constructing a sermon where we hold up a picture and the pictures

  10. are negative. That's for those of you who remember a thing called film. It was the inverse of what you

  11. wanted to see, and when the photograph was developed, you saw the positive picture. Well, we're holding up

  12. in some ways negatives in these four evenings, but I hope tonight as well, by the time we're finished,

  13. we'll see some positives too. Well, let's just pause as we come to God's Word and seek His help again in

  14. prayer. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do. Lord, we want to take that invitation this evening

  15. seriously as we look again into your Word. So we ask that you would incline our hearts to your testimony

  16. and away from selfish gain. And so do your work in our hearts for your glory's sake. It's in Jesus' name we ask it. Amen.

  17. Well, last week as we began this series, we started with Solomon's wisdom, and this evening we look at

  18. Solomon's worship. And last week we saw that his wisdom was compromised from the start and remained so,

  19. and so maybe the slide wasn't as steeply sloped as we might have thought. In fact, it started at a fairly low level already.

  20. Well, like last week, this week we'll be moving around in Solomon's story in 1 Kings, but we'll camp out a little bit

  21. in 1 Kings chapter 8. So I'd invite you to turn to 1 Kings chapter 8,

1 Kings 8 chapter mention 1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  22. and then keep your Bibles open in front of you.

  23. Those who were here this morning, we had quite a long prayer which focused on Israel's sin,

  24. and those of you who know 1 Kings chapter 8 will know that it's a long prayer that focuses on Israel's sin.

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  25. But we won't be looking at the whole of the passage, and our focus is Solomon's worship.

  26. We saw last week already that Solomon was a keen worshiper. He was an enthusiast.

  27. And so this week as we explore his worship, we want to see how someone so eager to be in God's presence

  28. could end up by experiencing God's absence.

  29. So 1 Kings chapter 8 is the story of the dedication of the temple that Solomon built,

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  30. or that was built under Solomon's direction.

  31. And we'll just read the first 13 verses to start to explore Solomon at worship.

  32. So this is 1 Kings 8 verse 1.

    1 Kings 8:1

  33. 1 Kings 8 verse 1.

    1 Kings 8:1

  34. And they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it.

  35. The priests and the Levites carried them up.

  36. And King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark,

  37. sacrificing so many sheep and cattle they could not be recorded or counted.

  38. The priests then brought the ark of the Lord's covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple,

  39. the most holy place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim.

  40. The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its carrying poles.

  41. These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary,

  42. but not from outside the holy place.

  43. And they're still there today.

  44. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb,

  45. where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

  46. When the priests withdrew from the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord,

  47. and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud,

  48. for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.

  49. Then Solomon said,

  50. The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud.

  51. I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell.

  52. Forever.

  53. And so we see Solomon at worship.

  54. Now, we could spend weeks looking at the theme of worship.

  55. It's a very rich theme to dig into.

  56. Already in the things that Pete's put together for us to our singing and in our prayers and in our reading,

  57. we'll have seen lots of pointers to true worship and what it's about and so on.

  58. But we'll be looking at four moments in Solomon's life where we see Solomon at worship.

  59. And it would help to have some definition of what worship is.

  60. And worship can mean different things.

  61. It means different things in different contexts.

  62. But my working definition for us this evening runs this way.

  63. Worship is the recognition and respect offered to God in public and private life,

  64. by which we enjoy communion with him.

  65. And that captures quite a bit, perhaps not everything, but quite a bit of what worship is about.

  66. The recognition and respect offered to God in our public and private life,

  67. by which we enjoy communion with him.

  68. So everything isn't worship, but a lot of things are worship.

  69. What we do here together is worship, but what we do on our own is worship.

  70. The four moments that we'll press into in Solomon's life have a little slide of their own.

  71. There's four of them.

  72. Well, they go down and down and down.

  73. And then we get a nice little flip up at the end.

  74. At least that's the hope.

  75. We'll see that Solomon's worship involves him in expensive building,

  76. in exuberant sacrifices, in expansive spirituality,

  77. but also brings up emphatic obedience.

  78. And as we move through his building work, his sacrificing,

  79. his spirituality and his note of obedience,

  80. we'll see that Solomon's external and visible actions,

  81. what he did, held at best an uncertain relationship

  82. to his internal and actual standing before God.

  83. The old adage, you can't tell a book by its cover.

  84. What Solomon's doing externally in worship bears an uncertain relationship.

  85. To what's going on internally between him and God.

  86. And of course, the overarching question as we look at Solomon at worship is,

  87. is this also true for us, for me?

  88. Well, we start then with Solomon's expensive building.

  89. And the passage we read at the beginning of 1 Kings 8

  90. comes towards the culmination of Solomon's temple building project.

  91. It's a project he inherited from his father.

  92. You might remember that when David intended to build a temple,

  93. initially the prophet Nathan came to him and said,

  94. right, on you go.

  95. All that is in your heart, it's good to do, do it.

  96. And the prophet went away and the Lord said to Nathan,

  97. no, that's not my plan.

  98. Go back to David and tell him that he won't be the one to build a house for me.

  99. And so this task of building a temple for the Lord is inherited, in a sense, by Solomon.

  100. And it dominates Solomon's story in 1 Kings 1 to 11.

  101. That's where Solomon's story runs.

  102. And actually, it's the whole central section.

  103. It amounts to almost half of Solomon's story.

  104. It's the story from chapter 5 to chapter 8 of Solomon preparing to build the temple,

  105. setting people up out to build the temple,

  106. getting, moving into the temple, and dedicating the temple.

  107. Almost half of Solomon's story.

  108. Like we saw with kingship last week,

  109. the temple is quite late coming to Israel.

  110. Everybody had temples.

  111. Every good king has a temple.

  112. And with the late coming of kingship to Israel,

  113. so we have a late coming to Israel of a temple.

  114. Now, it's not to say that the temple,

  115. nor to say that the king was a bad thing in coming to Israel.

  116. And you'll have seen in the reading that we had

  117. that the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

  118. So, this is the place that God has chosen to mark his presence with his people.

  119. But we know its late coming.

  120. There's a couple of things to note about the timing of its coming to Israel

  121. that help us to see the place it has in Solomon's life of worship.

  122. Take us into that, at any case.

  123. Turn back a couple of pages to 1 Kings chapter 6.

    1 Kings 6 chapter mention

  124. So, chapter 5 is all preparations for temple building.

  125. In chapter 6, they get started.

  126. So, chapter 6, verse 1.

  127. In the 480th year after the Israelites came out of Egypt,

  128. in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel,

  129. in the month of Ziv, the second month,

  130. he began to build the temple of the Lord.

  131. Well, I note this not because we just like all the technical details.

  132. You know, it's like getting a car or a computer or a new appliance.

  133. And we just love reading the manual and the specifications.

  134. That's not quite it.

  135. It's because our historian puts this timing here for a reason.

  136. As far as this historian is concerned,

  137. the temple comes at the precise midpoint of God's national life with his people Israel.

  138. It's a very significant moment.

  139. 480 years after the Israelites came out of Egypt.

  140. Well, what had happened in this chronology 480 years earlier?

  141. Well, it's the exodus from Egypt, but it's also the dedication of the tabernacle.

  142. And some of you might have heard an echo of the end of exodus in our passage from 1 Kings 8.

  143. This is what happens when the tabernacle is dedicated.

  144. Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting,

  145. and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

  146. Moses couldn't enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it,

  147. and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

  148. That's the exodus event.

  149. 480 years, we're at Solomon in the temple,

  150. and the glory of the Lord fills the temple.

  151. And 480 years on this reckoning later,

  152. we'll get Ezra founding the second temple.

  153. And we have these markers of Israel's worship life with God.

  154. And here we have Solomon's temple right at the fulcrum,

  155. the center point of that history of this God and this people.

  156. So it shows us something of the importance accorded to the temple.

  157. But what kind of importance did it have for Solomon?

  158. Well, clearly it was important.

  159. But if we go to the end of chapter 6, we can start to qualify that.

  160. So the end of chapter 6, we'll pick it up in verse 37,

  161. which repeats verse 1, basically.

  162. The foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid in the fourth year,

  163. in the month of Ziv.

  164. That's what we read in verse 1.

  165. Solomon's fourth year, he starts building.

  166. In the eleventh year, the month of Bul, the eighth month,

  167. the temple was finished in all its details,

  168. according to its specifications.

  169. To save us from doing the maths,

  170. he had spent seven years building it.

  171. That's a pretty substantial building project on any reckoning.

  172. But we keep reading across the chapter division.

  173. Let's continue into chapter 7.

  174. It took Solomon 13 years, however,

  175. to complete the construction of his palace.

  176. And its construction then is briefly told.

  177. Well, it's a joint building project then.

  178. And Solomon's building for a long time.

  179. Seven years on the temple,

  180. 13 years on the palace complex.

  181. Three observations about this.

  182. First, as I've noted already,

  183. our interest this evening isn't on the fact of the temple.

  184. It's the place of the Lord's choosing

  185. to mark his presence with his people.

  186. But it's on Solomon's building as an act of worship.

  187. And if we have that in mind,

  188. and if worship is that offering

  189. of recognition and respect given to God,

  190. and by which we enjoy communion with him,

  191. then for all its grandeur,

  192. Solomon's building of this temple

  193. seems at best partial.

  194. Maybe we're not intended to think

  195. that it's half as important to him

  196. as the building of his own palace.

  197. But it invites us to at least raise that question.

  198. Solomon's building as an act of worship towards God

  199. seems at best partial.

  200. Well, beyond this is the observation that

  201. repeatedly through chapter 8,

  202. as the temple is dedicated,

  203. five times in all,

  204. we read that this is the house that Solomon built.

  205. And we know that because Solomon is the one telling us

  206. that this is the house that Solomon built.

  207. I mean, we saw the first of these in verse 13

  208. as we finish that passage.

  209. Solomon said,

  210. the Lord,

  211. Solomon said,

  212. the Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud.

  213. I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you,

  214. a place for you to dwell forever.

  215. And four more times as chapter 8 unfolds,

  216. the house that I have built,

  217. the house that I have built,

  218. do this in the house that I have built.

  219. Well, it's worth recalling a Psalm of Solomon.

  220. There's two Psalms of Solomon in the 150 in the Psalms.

  221. Last week we looked briefly at Psalm 72.

  222. The other one is Psalm 127.

  223. Do you remember how that one begins?

  224. Some of you will.

  225. Unless the Lord builds the house,

  226. the builders labor in vain.

  227. Solomon loved building.

  228. He built all kinds of things.

  229. As we see the end of the dedication of the temple in chapter 9,

  230. when Solomon had finished building the temple of the Lord

  231. and the royal palace

  232. and had built all he had desired to build,

  233. on it goes.

  234. And later on in chapter 9,

  235. it gives us a further account of Solomon's building activities.

  236. This is verse 17.

  237. Although it starts before that,

  238. Solomon rebuilt Gezer.

  239. He built lower Bet-Horon,

  240. Balat, and Tadmor in the desert within his land.

  241. He built all his store cities

  242. and the towns for his chariots and his horses.

  243. Whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem,

  244. in Lebanon,

  245. and throughout all the territory he ruled.

  246. He was a bit of a compulsive builder, in fact.

  247. It's like a kid with a Lego set.

  248. He just kept on building,

  249. giving me more Lego,

  250. more buildings.

  251. And that was Solomon.

  252. Again, we put this beside his insistence,

  253. this is the house that I've built.

  254. It starts to qualify

  255. how we see the place of temple building

  256. in Solomon's life of worship.

  257. And just to finish this one off,

  258. recall that promise to David

  259. I mentioned a moment ago.

  260. When David purposed to build a house,

  261. eventually Nathan came to him and said,

  262. the Lord declares to you

  263. that the Lord himself will build a house for you.

  264. And David replied to Nathan the prophet,

  265. Lord Almighty, God of Israel,

  266. you have revealed this to your servants,

  267. saying, I will build a house for you.

  268. It's worth bearing in mind

  269. that when God builds a house,

  270. he builds it with people.

  271. He builds it of people.

  272. It's perhaps an irony

  273. that the word for worship occurs

  274. quite infrequently in Solomon's story,

  275. just two places, in fact.

  276. And one of the places is in the end of chapter 11,

  277. when the prophet comes to Jeroboam

  278. and says that the people's worship

  279. has turned away from the true God.

  280. Solomon was very much concerned

  281. with his bricks and mortar.

  282. He wasn't concerned about the house building

  283. that goes on with the people of God.

  284. For me, it very much shunts my thoughts forward

  285. towards what we read in 1 Peter,

  286. that when we come into the kingdom of God,

  287. when there is a new king who comes to build.

  288. We read in 1 Peter 2,

  289. as you come to him,

  290. to the living stone, that is Christ,

  291. rejected by humans,

  292. but chosen by God and precious to him,

  293. you also, like living stones,

  294. are being built into a spiritual house

  295. to be a holy priesthood,

  296. offering spiritual sacrifices

  297. acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

  298. So Solomon, expensive building,

  299. but perhaps not the right kind of building

  300. to reflect worship to the true and living God.

  301. But we've just heard of offering sacrifices,

  302. and that's the second thing we want to look at,

  303. not just, not only expensive building,

  304. but exuberant sacrifice.

  305. We've seen this already in our reading,

  306. but a reminder again for those of you

  307. who were here last week,

  308. in 1 Kings chapter 3,

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  309. that's the dream at Gibeon.

  310. Solomon goes to Gibeon,

  311. has the dream,

  312. and that's where God gifts him wisdom.

  313. And as that chapter begins,

  314. verse 4,

  315. still setting the scene in 1 Kings chapter 3,

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  316. at verse 4 we read,

  317. the king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices,

  318. for that was the most important high place.

  319. Kings got to go to the most important high place.

  320. And Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings

  321. on that altar.

  322. And after the dream,

  323. he returns to Jerusalem,

  324. verse 15,

  325. stood before the ark of the Lord's covenant,

  326. sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.

  327. So he's an enthusiastic sacrificer,

  328. which on the face of it seems a good thing.

  329. Seems a good thing.

  330. Let's look a little further.

  331. So we've seen already,

  332. as we read in 1 Kings 8,

  333. that they start off with this

  334. unimaginable sacrificing.

  335. 1 Kings 8, 5,

  336. King Solomon,

  337. the entire assembly of Israel gathered about him,

  338. were before the ark,

  339. sacrificing so many sheep and cattle,

  340. they could not be recorded or counted.

  341. The dedication takes place,

  342. and at the end of chapter 8,

  343. they've found enough accountants

  344. to manage the job.

  345. So at 1 Kings 8,

  346. start at verse 62,

  347. then the king and all Israel with him

  348. offered sacrifices before the Lord.

  349. Solomon offered a sacrifice

  350. of fellowship offerings to the Lord,

  351. 22,000 cattle,

  352. and 120,000 sheep and goats.

  353. So the king and all the Israelites

  354. dedicated the temple of the Lord.

  355. Well, this is sacrifice on a grand scale.

  356. Commentators have interesting discussions

  357. about these numbers,

  358. as you could well imagine.

  359. I'm not great with numbers,

  360. but we know that the festival of dedication

  361. took two weeks.

  362. So,

  363. 140,

  364. what's that?

  365. See, I'm not good with numbers.

  366. 143,000 offerings,

  367. sacrifices.

  368. That comes out to roughly,

  369. I've written it down,

  370. 10,143 sacrifices a day,

  371. or if you imagine this is just during waking hours,

  372. 845 an hour.

  373. It's pretty good going.

  374. It's extravagant.

  375. And I think at one level we think,

  376. wow,

  377. I wish I could sacrifice like that.

  378. But his father again said something interesting.

  379. When he acquired the place

  380. on which the temple was to be built,

  381. he was offered some cattle

  382. and some wood to sacrifice on the spot.

  383. And David said,

  384. no,

  385. I will not offer to the Lord

  386. sacrifices that cost me nothing.

  387. And we start to think,

  388. well,

  389. what do these sacrifices mean,

  390. in fact?

  391. And I got a bit of help thinking about this

  392. from Jonathan Edwards.

  393. Now,

  394. Jonathan Edwards

  395. was a pastor

  396. philosopher in New England

  397. in the 18th century,

  398. something like 1700 something,

  399. 1758 roughly,

  400. his life.

  401. He was the preacher

  402. in one of the New England churches

  403. in 1734

  404. when there was a dramatic revival,

  405. such a dramatic revival,

  406. there was international interest in it.

  407. 15 or so years later,

  408. there was another sort of echo

  409. of that revival.

  410. And as often happens

  411. in times of revival,

  412. there's controversy.

  413. And Edwards

  414. looked back

  415. on the 1734 revival

  416. in which he was deeply involved.

  417. His family affected deeply,

  418. his own wife,

  419. experiencing quite amazing things

  420. during that period.

  421. And he wrote a book

  422. called

  423. A Treatise Concerning

  424. Religious Affections,

  425. which still bears reading today.

  426. You can download it

  427. on the internet.

  428. The PDF's 304 pages.

  429. But he thinks about,

  430. in this context,

  431. controversy over revival.

  432. What's a true sign

  433. of God at work?

  434. Those crazy people

  435. down the street,

  436. is God at work in them?

  437. What's a true sign

  438. of revival?

  439. And much of the work

  440. is taken up

  441. with discerning

  442. and discussing biblically

  443. what are true signs

  444. and what are no true signs,

  445. or at least uncertain signs.

  446. And the first thing

  447. he starts off with

  448. in the middle section

  449. of the book,

  450. which bears the title,

  451. this is part two,

  452. showing what are no certain signs

  453. that religious affections

  454. are gracious.

  455. These are not certain signs.

  456. And the very first of these

  457. is that it is no sign

  458. one way or the other

  459. that religious affections

  460. are very great

  461. or raised very high.

  462. He says,

  463. after considering

  464. that it's important

  465. that we have affection

  466. in worship,

  467. he writes this,

  468. it's no evidence

  469. that religious affections

  470. are of a spiritual

  471. and gracious nature

  472. because they are great.

  473. It is very manifest

  474. by the Holy Scripture,

  475. our sure and infallible rule

  476. to judge of things

  477. of this nature,

  478. that there are

  479. religious affections

  480. which are very high,

  481. which are not spiritual

  482. or saving.

  483. some are,

  484. he says,

  485. some aren't.

  486. So here we have

  487. no true sign.

  488. And as we reflect

  489. in this way

  490. on Solomon's story,

  491. we recall

  492. that the Old Testament

  493. has no requirements

  494. for sacrifice

  495. on this scale

  496. that Solomon's offering.

  497. In fact,

  498. there's something

  499. like the opposite.

  500. Now,

  501. it comes from

  502. a later time,

  503. but in Micah,

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  504. chapter 6,

  505. we have a reflection

  506. on exactly this dynamic.

  507. I'll read it for you.

  508. It's Micah,

    Micah 6:6

  509. chapter 6,

  510. verse 6,

  511. to verse 8.

  512. And the prophet asks,

  513. with what shall I

  514. come before the Lord?

  515. And that's our question.

  516. How shall I come

  517. before the Lord?

  518. And bow down

  519. before the exalted God.

  520. Shall I come before him

  521. with burnt offerings,

  522. with calves,

  523. a year old?

  524. It's a good starting point.

  525. Or will the Lord

  526. be pleased

  527. with thousands of rams,

  528. with 10,000 rivers

  529. of oil?

  530. We're getting into

  531. Solomon territory now.

  532. Or shall I offer

  533. my firstborn

  534. for my transgression?

  535. Maybe now I'm going

  536. too far.

  537. The fruit of my body

  538. for the sin of my soul.

  539. What's the ultimate

  540. sacrifice I can make?

  541. And the response comes.

  542. He has shown you,

  543. O mortal,

  544. what is good.

  545. And what does

  546. the Lord require of you

  547. but to act justly,

  548. to love mercy,

  549. and to walk humbly

  550. with your God?

  551. not the extravagant

  552. sacrifices.

  553. So again,

  554. we put a question mark

  555. over that

  556. and say with,

  557. perhaps,

  558. Jonathan Edwards,

  559. no true sign.

  560. Well,

  561. we have

  562. expensive building.

  563. We have

  564. exuberant sacrifice.

  565. A third place

  566. we see

  567. Solomon at worship

  568. is in what I've called

  569. expansive

  570. spirituality.

  571. spirituality.

  572. And we need to

  573. turn over

  574. a couple of pages

  575. to get

  576. our best glimpse

  577. of this,

  578. although,

  579. again,

  580. we've seen it already

  581. in what we've been

  582. reading this evening.

  583. So to look at

  584. 1 Kings chapter 11.

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  585. When we were back

  586. at Gibeon

  587. in chapter 3,

  588. Solomon's there.

  589. It's a high place.

  590. It's the most important

  591. high place,

  592. and you get the sense

  593. that Solomon's a bit

  594. of a spiritual tourist.

  595. He'll go where he needs

  596. to go to get

  597. to the best high place.

  598. And that kind of openness

  599. to spiritual experience

  600. grows to alarming proportions

  601. later in life.

  602. My hunch is

  603. this is possibly

  604. a passage

  605. that John will be

  606. looking at later

  607. for other reasons,

  608. but let's read

  609. 1 Kings 11.

  610. We'll start at verse 4.

  611. Read just a few verses.

  612. As Solomon grew old,

  613. his wives turned his heart

  614. after other gods,

  615. and his heart was not

  616. fully devoted to the Lord,

  617. his God,

  618. as the heart of David,

  619. his father,

  620. had been.

  621. He followed Ashtoreth,

  622. the goddess of the Sidonians,

  623. and Molech,

  624. the detestable god

  625. of the Ammonites.

  626. So Solomon did evil

  627. in the eyes of the Lord.

  628. He did not follow

  629. the Lord completely

  630. as David,

  631. his father,

  632. had done.

  633. On a hill

  634. east of Jerusalem,

  635. Solomon built

  636. a high place

  637. for Chemosh,

  638. the detestable god

  639. of Moab,

  640. and for Molech,

  641. the detestable god

  642. of the Ammonites.

  643. He did the same

  644. for all his foreign wives.

  645. He burned incense

  646. and offered sacrifices

  647. to their god.

  648. The Lord became angry

  649. with Solomon.

  650. This is not a good thing.

  651. So Solomon's kind

  652. of inclusiveness

  653. in worship

  654. starts welcoming

  655. in these foreign cults

  656. into his own palace,

  657. and he even makes

  658. a home for them

  659. in Jerusalem.

  660. It's quite sobering

  661. to observe

  662. that Solomon's

  663. pagan sanctuaries

  664. persisted in Jerusalem

  665. for 300 years.

  666. Right towards the end

  667. of the history

  668. of Judah,

  669. before the Babylonian exile,

  670. of which we've been

  671. thinking in our

  672. morning services,

  673. there was a great

  674. reforming king

  675. named Josiah.

  676. And 2 Kings 23,

  677. the other end

  678. of the story of Israel,

  679. we read about

  680. Josiah's reforms,

  681. and among them

  682. we read this.

  683. It's 2 Kings 23, 13.

  684. The king,

  685. in this case,

  686. it's Josiah.

  687. The king also

  688. desecrated the high

  689. places that were

  690. east of Jerusalem

  691. on the south

  692. of the hill

  693. of corruption,

  694. the ones Solomon,

  695. king of Israel,

  696. had built for Ashtoret,

  697. the vile goddess

  698. of the Sidonians,

  699. for Chemosh,

  700. the vile god of Moab,

  701. and for Molech,

  702. the detestable god

  703. of the people

  704. of Ammon.

  705. So for 300 years,

  706. Solomon's mix-and-match

  707. worship had been there

  708. as a snare and temptation

  709. for the people

  710. of Judah

  711. in Jerusalem.

  712. And as I

  713. pondered this

  714. circumstance,

  715. I couldn't help

  716. but ask myself

  717. my own question,

  718. what illicit shrines

  719. do I build

  720. in harbor

  721. in my life?

  722. What illicit shrines

  723. have been built

  724. generations ago

  725. that might still be

  726. sullying,

  727. polluting

  728. the spiritual

  729. inheritance

  730. that we have

  731. in our families?

  732. And it came to mind

  733. again a program

  734. that aired

  735. last Christmas,

  736. just before last Christmas

  737. on Radio 4.

  738. Chrismica

  739. and other

  740. cultural mash-ups.

  741. Sounds a bit

  742. Solomonic.

  743. This is our religious

  744. and cultural context.

  745. Here's a part

  746. of the program

  747. description.

  748. As the number

  749. of interfaith

  750. marriages

  751. in Britain

  752. increases,

  753. we uncover

  754. a growing phenomenon,

  755. the cultural

  756. mash-up.

  757. Families who are

  758. getting creative

  759. as they combine

  760. different religious

  761. and cultural

  762. traditions to create

  763. their own

  764. unique festivals.

  765. Well, there was

  766. a review of the

  767. program in the

  768. Radio Times.

  769. The viewer loved it.

  770. This program,

  771. all about pluralism

  772. and integration,

  773. provides the right

  774. kind of balance

  775. this holiday season.

  776. The reviewer noted,

  777. we hear, for example,

  778. of a Muslim Easter

  779. egg hunt.

  780. It's wrong on quite a

  781. number of levels.

  782. And he finishes,

  783. truly,

  784. a glimmer of light

  785. in the darkness,

  786. echoing,

  787. knowingly or not,

  788. John 1

  789. at Advent season.

  790. This is our

  791. cultural milieu.

  792. And this is the

  793. temptation that we'll

  794. be facing in our

  795. generation,

  796. as this kind of

  797. thing is approved.

  798. But there are

  799. other shrines,

  800. other forms of

  801. illicit spirituality

  802. we build into

  803. our lives,

  804. and that have the

  805. potential to pollute

  806. across generations.

  807. I remember a good

  808. Christian friend

  809. who said how

  810. hard it was for

  811. her to break

  812. away from her

  813. devotion to

  814. horoscopes.

  815. Tarot,

  816. down the

  817. center of

  818. Edinburgh.

  819. Many families,

  820. I think,

  821. feeling the

  822. effects of

  823. Masonic

  824. involvement,

  825. going on

  826. through generations.

  827. What other

  828. forms of

  829. illicit

  830. spirituality

  831. spirituality

  832. do we

  833. domesticate

  834. in our

  835. homes?

  836. I know

  837. it's

  838. controversial,

  839. but what

  840. about

  841. Harry Potter

  842. and many

  843. other forms

  844. of

  845. supernatural,

  846. illicit

  847. supernatural

  848. powers that

  849. we just

  850. make a

  851. space for

  852. and enjoy

  853. in our

  854. homes?

  855. Are we

  856. doing what

  857. Solomon was

  858. doing when

  859. we make a

  860. place for

  861. these shrines

  862. that do not

  863. honor the

  864. true and

  865. living God?

  866. God?

  867. Well,

  868. one

  869. commentator

  870. on these

  871. passages

  872. put it

  873. this way.

  874. Ultimately,

  875. even a

  876. faithful king,

  877. he was

  878. referring to

  879. Josiah,

  880. ultimately,

  881. even a

  882. faithful king

  883. will not

  884. be able to

  885. undo the

  886. idolatries

  887. of generations.

  888. Josiah's

  889. reform flickered

  890. briefly and

  891. then snuffed

  892. out as the

  893. Babylonian exile

  894. came.

  895. amidst the

  896. cries of

  897. the people

  898. that we

  899. worship the

  900. queen of

  901. heaven.

  902. It will

  903. take a

  904. king of

  905. an entirely

  906. different

  907. order of

  908. fidelity to

  909. deal decisively

  910. with his

  911. people's sin.

  912. So,

  913. expensive

  914. building,

  915. exuberant,

  916. sacrificing,

  917. expansive

  918. spirituality,

  919. and finally,

  920. finally,

  921. emphatic

  922. obedience.

  923. It's that

  924. little ramp

  925. at the

  926. end of

  927. the slide.

  928. Solomon

  929. seemed to

  930. have learned

  931. something from

  932. his father.

  933. And you'll

  934. recall that

  935. after David's

  936. adultery

  937. with Bathsheba,

  938. he repented,

  939. and we have

  940. the prayer of

  941. repentance in

  942. Psalm 51.

  943. As part of

  944. that, David

  945. prayed this,

  946. you do

  947. not delight

  948. in sacrifice,

  949. or I would

  950. bring it.

  951. You do

  952. not take

  953. pleasure in

  954. burnt offerings.

  955. The sacrifices

  956. of God

  957. are a broken

  958. spirit, a

  959. broken and

  960. contrite heart.

  961. O God, you

  962. will not

  963. despise.

  964. And what

  965. does God

  966. desire?

  967. It's in

  968. Psalm 51.

  969. 6.

  970. You desired

  971. faithfulness,

  972. even in the

  973. womb.

  974. At some

  975. level, Solomon

  976. must have

  977. learned this

  978. lesson.

  979. And the

  980. closing petition

  981. in his

  982. lengthy prayer,

  983. we saw a

  984. closing petition

  985. this morning,

  986. comes at

  987. verse 56

  988. of chapter

  989. 8.

  990. 1 Kings

  991. 8, 56.

  992. And we'll

  993. just read a

  994. couple of

  995. passages here

  996. as we draw

  997. towards an

  998. end.

  999. Solomon's

  1000. closing petition,

  1001. praise be to

  1002. the Lord who

  1003. has given

  1004. rest to his

  1005. people Israel,

  1006. just as he

  1007. promised.

  1008. Not one

  1009. word has

  1010. failed of

  1011. all the

  1012. good promises

  1013. he gave

  1014. through his

  1015. servant Moses,

  1016. echoing the

  1017. words of

  1018. Joshua centuries

  1019. earlier.

  1020. May the

  1021. Lord our

  1022. God be with

  1023. us as he

  1024. was with

  1025. our ancestors.

  1026. May he

  1027. never leave

  1028. us nor

  1029. forsake us.

  1030. May he

  1031. turn our

  1032. hearts to

  1033. him, to

  1034. walk in

  1035. obedience to

  1036. him, and

  1037. keep the

  1038. commands,

  1039. decrees, and

  1040. laws he

  1041. gave our

  1042. ancestors.

  1043. And may

  1044. these words

  1045. of mine,

  1046. which I

  1047. have prayed

  1048. before the

  1049. Lord, be

  1050. near the

  1051. Lord our

  1052. God day

  1053. and night,

  1054. that he

  1055. may uphold

  1056. the cause

  1057. of his

  1058. servant, and

  1059. the cause

  1060. of his

  1061. people Israel,

  1062. according to

  1063. each day's

  1064. need, so

  1065. that all the

  1066. peoples of

  1067. the earth may

  1068. know that the

  1069. Lord is God,

  1070. there is no

  1071. other.

  1072. And may your

  1073. hearts be fully

  1074. committed to the

  1075. Lord, to live

  1076. by his decrees,

  1077. and obey his

  1078. commands, as

  1079. at this time.

  1080. It's a good

  1081. prayer.

  1082. It speaks to

  1083. many of the

  1084. concerns that

  1085. we've raised as

  1086. we've looked at

  1087. the building, the

  1088. sacrificing, and

  1089. the inclusive

  1090. spirituality.

  1091. It's a prayer

  1092. that God heard

  1093. and answered.

  1094. And we know

  1095. that, because

  1096. that's what we

  1097. read of in

  1098. chapter 9.

  1099. So I'll just

  1100. continue in

  1101. chapter 9.

  1102. when Solomon

  1103. had finished

  1104. building the

  1105. temple of the

  1106. Lord and the

  1107. royal palace and

  1108. had achieved all

  1109. he had desired

  1110. to do, the

  1111. Lord appeared to

  1112. him a second

  1113. time as he had

  1114. appeared to him

  1115. at Gibeon.

  1116. The Lord said

  1117. to him,

  1118. I have heard

  1119. the prayer and

  1120. plea you have

  1121. made before me.

  1122. I have consecrated

  1123. this temple,

  1124. which you have

  1125. built, by putting

  1126. my name there

  1127. forever.

  1128. My eyes and

  1129. my heart will

  1130. always be there.

  1131. As for you,

  1132. if you walk

  1133. before me

  1134. faithfully with

  1135. integrity of

  1136. heart and

  1137. uprightness, as

  1138. David your

  1139. father did, and

  1140. do all I

  1141. command and

  1142. observe my

  1143. decrees and

  1144. laws, I will

  1145. establish your

  1146. royal throne over

  1147. Israel forever,

  1148. as I promised

  1149. David your

  1150. father when I

  1151. said, you

  1152. shall never

  1153. fail to have

  1154. a successor

  1155. on the throne

  1156. of Israel.

  1157. But if you

  1158. or your

  1159. descendants turn

  1160. away from me

  1161. and do not

  1162. observe the

  1163. commands and

  1164. decrees I have

  1165. given you and

  1166. go off to serve

  1167. other gods and

  1168. worship them,

  1169. then I will cut

  1170. off Israel from

  1171. the land I have

  1172. given them and

  1173. will reject this

  1174. temple I have

  1175. consecrated for

  1176. my name.

  1177. Israel will

  1178. then become a

  1179. byword and an

  1180. object of ridicule

  1181. among all

  1182. peoples.

  1183. This temple

  1184. will become a

  1185. heap of rubble.

  1186. All who pass

  1187. by will be

  1188. appalled and

  1189. will scoff and

  1190. say, why has

  1191. the Lord done

  1192. such a thing to

  1193. this land and

  1194. to this temple?

  1195. People will

  1196. answer, because

  1197. they have forsaken

  1198. the Lord their

  1199. God, who brought

  1200. their ancestors out

  1201. of Egypt and

  1202. have embraced

  1203. other gods,

  1204. worshipping and

  1205. serving them.

  1206. That is why the

  1207. Lord brought all

  1208. this disaster on

  1209. them.

  1210. As we began,

  1211. we wanted to

  1212. see how someone

  1213. so eager to

  1214. be in God's

  1215. presence would

  1216. end by experiencing

  1217. God's absence.

  1218. And this is

  1219. precisely how.

  1220. It comes back

  1221. again to a

  1222. life of

  1223. obedience.

  1224. And it's not

  1225. an irony that

  1226. immediately after

  1227. this great high

  1228. point of

  1229. dedicating the

  1230. temple, the

  1231. first thing

  1232. Solomon hears is

  1233. a warning.

  1234. Much as in his

  1235. first dream in

  1236. Gibeon, God's

  1237. God wants him

  1238. to be.

  1239. In a sense,

  1240. in a sense,

  1241. warning him by

  1242. putting before him

  1243. the man God wants

  1244. him to be.

  1245. And again, here, the

1246. Lord warns him to be

  1247. the man that God

  1248. wants him to be.

  1249. The temple was

  1250. destroyed.

  1251. It was reduced to

  1252. rubble.

  1253. And yet God was

  1254. faithful to his

  1255. promise.

  1256. Well, expensive

  1257. building, exuberant

  1258. sacrifice, expensive

  1259. spirituality, emphatic

  1260. obedience.

  1261. This gives us a

  1262. profile of Solomon

  1263. at worship.

  1264. But in a sense, it's

  1265. that negative, isn't

  1266. it?

  1267. Even with the

  1268. little positive

  1269. kick at the end

  1270. that came with a

  1271. warning, it still is

  1272. a negative.

1273. Well, how do we see

  1274. this picture as a

  1275. positive?

  1276. Just in a few

  1277. minutes.

  1278. Jesus perfectly

  1279. fulfills the

  1280. worship that Solomon

  1281. imperfectly signaled.

  1282. Jesus perfectly

  1283. fulfills the

  1284. worship that Solomon

  1285. imperfectly signaled.

  1286. Jesus is that

  1287. temple towards

  1288. which Solomon's

  1289. temple was

  1290. pointing.

  1291. Remember in

  1292. John, a few

  1293. texts from John

  1294. here, Jesus

  1295. answered them,

  1296. destroy this

  1297. temple and I

  1298. will raise it

  1299. again in three

  1300. days.

  1301. They replied, it

  1302. has taken 46

  1303. years to build

  1304. this Herod's

  1305. temple.

  1306. You're going to

  1307. raise it in three

  1308. days?

  1309. But the temple he

  1310. had spoken of was

  1311. his body.

  1312. Of course, in

  1313. Revelation 21, there

  1314. will be no temple

  1315. when the Lord's

  1316. presence is there

  1317. unmediated.

  1318. Jesus is the

  1319. temple and he's

  1320. building us, as we

  1321. read earlier, as

  1322. living stones into a

  1323. spiritual temple for

  1324. him.

  1325. Jesus wasn't about

  1326. exuberant sacrificing.

  1327. Jesus was the

  1328. sacrifice.

  1329. Jesus wasn't about

  1330. inclusive worship.

  1331. Jesus pointed all

  1332. mankind to

  1333. himself.

  1334. As he said in

  1335. John 10, I am the

  1336. good shepherd.

1337. I know my sheep, my

  1338. sheep know me, just

  1339. as the Father knows

1340. me and I know the

  1341. Father.

  1342. I lay down my

  1343. life for the

  1344. sheep.

  1345. That's the

  1346. sacrifice.

  1347. I have other

  1348. sheep that are not

  1349. of this fold.

  1350. I must bring them

  1351. too.

1352. Or as he said a

  1353. little later to his

  1354. disciples, when I

  1355. am lifted up, there's

  1356. that sacrifice again, I

  1357. will draw all people

  1358. to myself.

  1359. And finally, Jesus'

  1360. obedience invites a

  1361. response of obedience.

1362. As he spoke to his

  1363. disciples in the

  1364. hours before his

  1365. sacrifice, he said,

  1366. greater love has no

1367. one than this to lay

  1368. down one's life for

  1369. one's friends.

1370. You are my friends if

  1371. you do what I

  1372. command.

  1373. Our worship then

  1374. takes a Christ-like

  1375. shape as we are

  1376. transformed by him

  1377. and have his mind

  1378. in us.

  1379. Or to finish that

  1380. allusion to Romans

  1381. 12, where Paul

  1382. writes, I urge you,

  1383. brothers and

  1384. sisters, in view of

  1385. God's mercy, offer

  1386. your bodies a living

  1387. sacrifice, holy and

  1388. pleasing to God.

1389. This is your true and

  1390. proper worship.

1391. Do not conform to the

  1392. pattern of this world,

  1393. but be transformed by

  1394. the renewing of your

  1395. mind.

1396. Then you will be able to

  1397. test and approve what

  1398. God's will is, his

  1399. good, pleasing, and

  1400. perfect will.

  1401. In a sense, Solomon's

  1402. life is a bit of a

  1403. counter example to

  1404. that instruction from

  1405. the Apostle Paul.

1406. As I'm sure many of you

  1407. realize, there's one

  1408. flaw in Paul's request

1409. when he calls us to

1410. offer our bodies as a

  1411. living sacrifice.

  1412. The problem with a

  1413. living sacrifice is it

  1414. always crawls off the

  1415. altar.

  1416. death.

1417. And so we want to

  1418. look to Christ, to

  1419. find our obedience in

  1420. his obedience, and to

  1421. offer worship, to

  1422. recognize and respect

1423. God in our lives so

  1424. that others see him

  1425. there too, and we

  1426. enjoy fellowship and

  1427. communion with him.

  1428. Let's pray.

  1429. Our Father, we thank

1430. you that you desire to

  1431. have fellowship with

  1432. us, and that you

1433. want us to enjoy you.

1434. So we're sorry for the

1435. many ways in which our

  1436. thoughts and words and

  1437. deeds offend you.

1438. And we thank you for a

  1439. Savior and the Redeemer

1440. and the Lord Jesus who

1441. lived the life we could

1442. not live and died the

  1443. death we should have

1444. died so that we might

1445. have new life in him.

1446. Help us as we look to

1447. him day by day, moment

1448. by moment, to live lives

  1449. that are pleasing to

  1450. you, offering you the

  1451. recognition and respect

  1452. you deserve, and so

  1453. enjoying communion with

1454. you as you enable us

  1455. by your Spirit.

1456. It's in Jesus' name we

  1457. pray.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. Amen.

  1460. Amen.

  1461. Amen.

  1462. Amen.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Amen.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.
