  1. Let's pray together.

  2. Father God, we are so grateful that one greater than Solomon has come.

  3. And so, Lord, as we look at his failings,

  4. Father, as we look at this incident with his wives in mass idolatry,

  5. Father, would it not serve to make us smug,

  6. but may it serve to cling to your son even more.

  7. Father, bless us and help us.

  8. Teach us and change us.

  9. Father, be glorified in this time, we pray.

  10. Amen.

  11. This is the last part of our series in Solomon's life.

  12. I found it fascinating to spend these four weeks together

  13. exploring Solomon's character.

  14. And I think it is a definite warning

  15. when giftedness doesn't match godliness.

  16. And we've seen all the way through

  17. that perhaps there are some difficulties brewing.

  18. There are some awkward situations

  19. where God's gifts are not necessarily employed in the right way.

  20. And so today is the day when the wheels will finally fall off.

  21. Where Solomon's sin finally comes to the surface.

  22. And I think it's important as we begin to think of a word,

  23. schadenfreude.

  24. It's a German word, but we don't have an English equivalent.

  25. So we use the German word.

  26. And schadenfreude means harm joy.

  27. It is endemic in our world that we take great delight

  28. when we see famous people, celebrity people,

  29. fall a long way.

  30. Schadenfreude.

  31. And as we study Solomon and his wives,

  32. this is our biggest danger.

  33. That we'll sit here and we'll almost laugh and poke fun

  34. and feel better about ourselves on account of Solomon's fall.

  35. But that would be to totally miss

  36. all that we're to learn from this eerie chapter.

  37. I remember being at school about 13,

  38. just as that point that, you know,

  39. boys start to grow at different rates.

  40. And you get some boys who are 13, who are 6'2".

  41. They've got hairy shoulders and kind of Barry White voices.

  42. And my rugby team was quite spindly.

  43. And our coach would always say,

  44. the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

  45. It was a complete lie on the rugby field.

  46. The bigger they were, the more they hurt us.

  47. But I think when it comes to Solomon,

  48. we can say the bigger he is, the harder he fell.

  49. And so we're going to read in 1 Kings 11,

  50. the fall is catastrophic.

  51. It is so enormous.

  52. We're very familiar with people falling from grace.

  53. It seems that the sports arena is particularly prone.

  54. We all remember OJ Simpson,

  55. this highly paid NFL star moving into a really lucrative movie career.

  56. And then the wheels fell off.

  57. Or Lance Armstrong,

  58. this person who was the epitome of fighting clean

  59. and fighting hard and persevering and bouncing back,

  60. is then found to have taken EPO for all of his Tour de France career.

  61. A massive fall from grace.

  62. Who doesn't remember Tiger Woods?

  63. The most prolific golfer ever to have lived,

  64. whose royalties and sponsorships were bringing him

  65. 100 million pounds a year without even hitting a golf ball.

  66. And that day that he appeared in the newspaper,

  67. having wrapped his car around the tree,

  68. and his marital infidelity comes to the surface.

  69. Since then, he's not been able to hit a golf ball straight.

  70. Or just recently, Maria Sharapova,

  71. the highest paid female athlete ever.

  72. And all this drug scandal that's seen her career stalled,

  73. if not ended.

  74. And even this week,

  75. Oscar Pistori is the most famous para-athlete ever.

  76. Now a man who is going to prison

  77. and whose life is utterly broken.

  78. The bigger they are,

  79. the harder they fall.

  80. And we're going to see that in Solomon's case,

  81. the fall is gigantic.

  82. The downfall, catastrophic.

  83. And it's into a decline of deep, dark, and slipperiness.

  84. That the nation never recovered from.

  85. Solomon's sin spirals out and ripples out into the whole nation.

  86. With terrifying consequences.

  87. That it will never really bounce back from.

  88. We must learn from Solomon's mistakes.

  89. If Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived,

  90. could be so foolish,

  91. surely that means this can happen to any of us.

  92. We must, unlike Solomon,

  93. resist the drift and cling to Christ.

  94. We must resist the drift and cling to Christ.

  95. So if you've got a Bible, turn with me.

  96. To 1 Kings chapter 11,

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  97. and we'll read the first 13 verses.

  98. The chronicler writes,

  99. King Solomon, however,

  100. loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter.

  101. Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.

  102. They were from the nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites,

  103. you must not intermarry with them.

  104. Because they will surely turn your hearts after other gods.

  105. Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

  106. He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines.

  107. And his wives led his heart astray.

  108. As Solomon grew old,

  109. his wives turned his heart after other gods.

  110. And his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord,

  111. his God,

  112. as the heart of David,

  113. his father, had been.

  114. He followed Ashtaroth,

  115. the goddess of the Sidonians,

  116. and Molech,

  117. the detestable god of the Ammonites.

  118. So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  119. He did not follow the Lord completely,

  120. as David, his father, had done.

  121. On a hill east of Jerusalem,

  122. Solomon built a high place for Chemosh,

  123. the detestable god of Moab,

  124. and for Molech,

  125. the detestable god of the Ammonites.

  126. He did the same for all his foreign wives,

  127. who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

  128. The Lord became angry with Solomon

  129. because his heart had turned away from the Lord,

  130. the God of Israel,

  131. who had appeared to him twice.

  132. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods,

  133. Solomon did not keep the Lord's command.

  134. So the Lord said to Solomon,

  135. Since this is your attitude,

  136. and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees,

  137. which I commanded you,

  138. I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you,

  139. and give it to one of your subordinates.

  140. Nevertheless, for the sake of David, your father,

  141. I will not do it during your lifetime.

  142. I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

  143. Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him,

  144. but will give him one tribe,

  145. for the sake of David, my servant,

  146. and for the sake of Jerusalem,

  147. which I have chosen.

  148. We've seen over this four-week series

  149. that Solomon is not so much good guy gone bad

  150. as complex guy turned catastrophe.

  151. And this evening, the wheels finally fall off,

  152. but there have been warning signs all the way through.

  153. We saw in week one that wisdom is graciously given,

  154. but perhaps inappropriately employed.

  155. We then see worship exuberantly offered,

  156. but with an air of hypocritical exhibitionism,

  157. that he's doing it on such a grandiose scale.

  158. It is to draw attention to himself.

  159. And then we saw his wealth last week,

  160. wonderfully gifted, but increasingly idolized.

  161. There have been the breadcrumbs

  162. that something's not been quite right

  163. all the way through our series.

  164. And tonight, the wheels finally fall off.

  165. This evening, with Solomon's wives,

  166. the dam finally bursts,

  167. and everything is laid bare,

  168. what's gone on in Solomon's life for many years.

  169. So let's look at it together.

  170. The first thing I want us to see is

  171. the first four verses.

  172. Solomon's sin surfaces.

  173. Solomon's sin surfaces.

  174. I wonder, have you ever had an ice cream headache?

  175. Probably don't get them in Scotland,

  176. because ice cream is probably only edible

  177. for about two weeks of the year.

  178. But the strange phenomenon about an ice cream headache

  179. is the pain caused by the coldness in your mouth

  180. presents as a splitting headache in your head.

  181. It is what clinicians refer to as referred pain.

  182. Similarly, if you've ever had gallstones,

  183. it can quite often present as pain in your shoulder blade,

  184. which is quite a long way from your gallbladder

  185. where the stones are situated.

  186. It's called referred pain,

  187. where the symptoms are a long way from the problem.

  188. And when it comes to Solomon's wives,

  189. this could also be referred pain.

  190. The symptoms appear as 700 wives and 300 concubines,

  191. but the problem is in Solomon's heart.

  192. The heart of Solomon's problem is Solomon's heart.

  193. It presents as polygamy,

  194. but it's really down to half-heartedness.

  195. Heart is mentioned six times

  196. in these 13 verses.

  197. Look at verse 3.

  198. He had 700 wives of royal births

  199. and 300 concubines,

  200. and his wives turned his heart away.

  201. Look at verse 4.

  202. His heart was not fully devoted

  203. to the Lord his God.

  204. A little bit earlier on in verse 4.

  205. His wives turned his heart

  206. after other gods.

  207. Verse 9.

  208. The Lord became angry with Solomon

  209. because his heart had turned away from the Lord,

  210. the God of Israel,

  211. who had appeared to him twice.

  212. The heart of Solomon's problem

  213. is Solomon's problematic heart.

  214. Solomon falls into sin,

  215. his half-heartedness,

  216. long before he falls into disgrace.

  217. We know that to be true.

  218. These big scandals that have hit these mega church pastors in America.

  219. Once the scandal finally breaks,

  220. they roll back the years and isolate the many different times

  221. that there's been failings and faults.

  222. A heart that should have been devoted to the Lord starts to drift.

  223. Whole-heartedness becomes half-heartedness over a period of time.

  224. And as his heart drifts away from the Lord,

  225. it drifts towards foreign wives.

  226. He has 700 wives.

  227. That means he has pretty much two wedding anniversaries to remember every day.

  228. Over a 40-year reign,

  229. that means he's getting married 18 times a year.

  230. I have just about recovered from the trauma of getting married once,

  231. nearly eight years ago.

  232. Although the text says 700 wives,

  233. there's 700 wives of royal birth.

  234. So he may have a few more dotted around.

  235. He went from such high class.

  236. Alongside, he has 300 concubines.

  237. 300 plus 700,

  238. a thousand women in his life.

  239. He would need to be the wisest man.

  240. In the world to cope with that.

  241. This is a scary accumulation.

  242. It's scary on a number of reasons,

  243. not just the numbers,

  244. but it stems from disobedience.

  245. So many times in the law of God,

  246. God has forbidden the king particularly to marry foreign wives.

  247. Exodus 34 explicitly forbids Israelites taking foreign wives

  248. because they will lead them astray after their own gods.

  249. Exodus 20 verse 14,

    Exodus 20:14

  250. one of the 10 commandments,

  251. if you shall not commit adultery.

  252. 300 concubines probably suggest you haven't taken that law that seriously.

  253. Deuteronomy 17, 17,

  254. particularly about the king,

  255. and he shall not acquire many wives for himself,

  256. lest his heart turn away,

  257. nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

  258. And the passage quoted here in chapter 11 of 1 Kings,

  259. Deuteronomy 7, 3 and 4,

  260. you shall not intermarry with them,

  261. giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons.

  262. For they would turn away your sons from following me to serve other gods.

  263. Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you,

  264. and he would destroy you quickly.

  265. Real warnings.

  266. And this is the law that Solomon,

  267. the king is supposed to have written out

  268. and meditated on all the time to keep with them.

  269. And yet he thinks,

  270. 700, that's fine.

  271. That's not what I would consider to be excessive number of wives.

  272. Or he just didn't believe it would happen.

  273. He thought so great was his gifting that he wouldn't fall,

  274. as God said,

  275. that anyone would.

  276. It's direct disobedience,

  277. but it's also distrusting.

  278. There's been a warning sign of this in 1 Kings chapter 3,

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  279. in verse 1,

  280. where we read,

  281. Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt

  282. and married his daughter.

  283. So this military alliance is finalized and forged

  284. and ratified by Solomon marrying Pharaoh's daughter.

  285. And it would seem from context

  286. that many of these other royal weddings have happened

  287. about shoring up Israel's borders.

  288. So Israel's great enemies are the Moabites

  289. and the Ammonites and the Edomites

  290. and the Sidonians and the Hittites.

  291. So what does Solomon do?

  292. He gathers all their princesses together

  293. and makes them Mrs. Solomons.

  294. And why?

  295. Because he trusted more in his diplomacy

  296. than he did in his God to keep them safe.

  297. He thought,

  298. I know what?

  299. Solomon's will get us through.

  300. Rather than my trust in the God

  301. who has brought us safely thus far.

  302. Solomon relying on his own diplomacy

  303. more than he is on the God of the universe.

  304. And then there's real duplicity.

  305. Because not only does he let his,

  306. not only does he marry many foreign wives,

  307. he lets them continue to worship their own gods.

  308. There's a real pluralism going on here.

  309. He lets his wives worship their gods

  310. in the very city that God had chosen

  311. to bear his own name.

  312. The city out of all the cities of the world,

  313. God said,

  314. that is where I'm going to place my name.

  315. And suddenly we find hymns of worship

  316. raising to many foreign gods.

  317. The wisest man has played the fool

  318. and has drifted into difficulty

  319. and opened the door to calamity.

  320. Chapter 11, verse 2.

  321. The end of it.

  322. Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

  323. Literally, Solomon clung to them in love.

  324. This language of clinging

  325. usually refers to one's relationship with God.

  326. How we cling to God in love.

  327. How we lean on him and cleave to him.

  328. It's in fact the very words

  329. that have been used to describe

  330. Solomon's relationship with God.

  331. Solomon 3, 1 Kings 3, verse 3.

    1 Kings 3:3

  332. Solomon showed his love for the Lord

  333. by walking according to the instructions

  334. given him by his father.

  335. It's exactly the same phrase.

  336. Solomon clung.

  337. He held fast to his gods.

  338. What a scary contrast that has happened

  339. over eight chapters.

  340. The beginning of Solomon's reign.

  341. He clung to his gods.

  342. Solomon, 1 Kings 11, verse 2.

    1 Kings 11:2

  343. Solomon clung to his wives.

  344. There's been a complete switch, a total swap.

  345. The last time we heard Solomon speak

  346. was at the end of his benediction

  347. in chapter 8.

  348. Chapter 8, verse 61.

  349. This is what he prays for all his people.

  350. And may your hearts

  351. be fully committed to the Lord our God

  352. to live by his decrees

  353. and obey his commands

  354. as at this time.

  355. Well, he was the first person to disobey.

  356. Well, he was praying for others.

  357. Someone whose heart was not fully obedient.

  358. Who didn't fully laugh.

  359. And then look at verse 4.

  360. What a warning this is for all of us.

  361. As Solomon grew old.

  362. As Solomon grew old,

  363. his wives turned his heart

  364. off to other gods.

  365. It is a stark warning.

  366. Aileen and I have friends

  367. who are trying to sell their flat

  368. in Aberdeen.

  369. And it's a tenement flat

  370. and all the toilet blocks

  371. are on top of each other in a stack.

  372. And they can't sell it

  373. because for many, many years

  374. there has been water ingress

  375. into the toilet stack.

  376. And actually,

  377. the toilet stack is coming away

  378. from the rest of the tenement

  379. and is actually only braced on

  380. and held by these huge metal clips.

  381. Undetected.

  382. Year after year,

  383. drip, drip, drip, drip, drip.

  384. You get the sense

  385. that's exactly what's happened

  386. in Solomon's life

  387. with all of these wives.

  388. That over time,

  389. they've just worn him down.

  390. That when he was old,

  391. his heart turned

  392. from the Lord.

  393. Worn down by this swarm

  394. of foreign wives.

  395. You could see how it happened.

  396. Oh, Solomon,

  397. love,

  398. will you not come to the festival

  399. for my God this week?

  400. Will you not come

  401. to this celebration?

  402. You wanted me to come

  403. and be your wife.

  404. Come and celebrate

  405. like we used to in Sidon.

  406. Come and do this ritual

  407. that we used to do in Moab.

  408. Come on.

  409. You're always dragging me

  410. off to the temple.

  411. Now it's your turn

  412. to come to one of my things.

  413. Oh, Solomon,

  414. can't we sacrifice some goats

  415. on this high place today

  416. as well as in the temple?

  417. You could see her

  418. when he was old.

  419. His heart turned away.

  420. He just gradually drifts away.

  421. Gradually.

  422. But over time,

  423. he's pointing

  424. in a totally different direction.

  425. I think it's right

  426. that we spend a lot of time

  427. praying for young people

  428. at Brunsfield.

  429. I think it's right

  430. that they would build

  431. their lives

  432. on the rock of Jesus Christ

  433. over and against

  434. the tide of popular culture

  435. that comes running against them

  436. at school

  437. and in the media.

  438. But I think

  439. on the back of tonight,

  440. we must also pray

  441. for our older people.

  442. We should pray

  443. for all our people.

  444. But particularly

  445. our older people

  446. that they wouldn't drift.

  447. So we wouldn't be

  448. saying about people,

  449. but when they were old,

  450. their hearts turned away.

  451. The daily discipline

  452. of devotion to Jesus.

  453. Jesus.

  454. We must pray

  455. that it won't be diluted

  456. down through the decades.

  457. I thought Ian

  458. was brilliant this morning.

  459. He's talking about familiarity

  460. and the danger that is

  461. with how we see Jesus.

  462. Well, that becomes

  463. more and more dangerous

  464. the longer we're on this road

  465. that we just build

  466. a familiarity

  467. and almost immunity

  468. to his grace

  469. and his wonder

  470. and his glory

  471. and his goodness.

  472. Is your attitude

  473. like the elderly Caleb

  474. who says,

  475. give me this mountain

  476. or has it become

  477. like Victor Meldrew

  478. passed me the slippers?

  479. It's a serious question

  480. because Solomon,

  481. the wisest man

  482. who had ever lived,

  483. who knew gifts

  484. unlike anybody

  485. who's ever lived

  486. and even he drifts away.

  487. Even he drifts

  488. to half-hearted

  489. idolatry.

  490. In orienteering,

  491. another sport

  492. we were made to play

  493. at school,

  494. you had to have

  495. a compass

  496. and a map

  497. and you were chasing

  498. these flags

  499. that were never

  500. where they were supposed

  501. to be,

  502. so bad is my map reading.

  503. But if you got

  504. the compass direction

  505. a little bit out

  506. after you run

  507. in 10 minutes

  508. that direction,

  509. you are miles away.

  510. So easy,

  511. isn't it,

  512. to drift?

  513. So easy that

  514. today I'm going to

  515. line my life up

  516. with Jesus.

  517. Tomorrow I may be

  518. a degree out

  519. and I go a bit

  520. further down the road

  521. and then I'm

  522. another degree out

  523. and before we know it

  524. the distance between

  525. us and Jesus

  526. is miles apart.

  527. It's what happens

  528. to Solomon

  529. when he's old.

  530. His wives

  531. turned his heart

  532. away,

  533. he drifted.

  534. We've got to

  535. resist the drift,

  536. we've got to

  537. cling to Christ.

  538. Not taking a,

  539. not letting it slip away

  540. but clinging to him

  541. to daily get up

  542. and say,

  543. today Jesus

  544. I love you

  545. and I want to

  546. follow you

  547. that I want you

  548. to be the number

  549. one priority

  550. in my life

  551. that we do sing

  552. I am so glad

  553. that Jesus loves me

  554. because the danger

  555. is we just drift away.

  556. It's never,

  557. nobody ever sins

  558. like Solomon

  559. in one great big leap.

  560. It's just by little

  561. steps closer and

  562. closer to a line

  563. before we're miles

  564. away

  565. and miles away.

  566. The Puritans

  567. have this lovely

  568. image that they

  569. use over and

  570. over again.

  571. They describe

  572. sin like baby

  573. snakes.

  574. And they appear

  575. in our lives.

  576. But we're so

  577. bad at just

  578. stamping on them

  579. that these

  580. little snakes

  581. that look so

  582. innocuous

  583. end up growing

  584. and becoming

  585. poisonous

  586. death vipers

  587. in our lives.

  588. Solomon is married

  589. to 700

  590. baby snakes

  591. and over time

  592. they've turned

  593. into

  594. an enormous

  595. wriggling

  596. mass

  597. of poisonous

  598. death vipers.

  599. Instead of

  600. killing sin

  601. and fleeing

  602. temptation

  603. Solomon

  604. caught sin

  605. and cohabits

  606. with temptation

  607. on a

  608. ginormous

  609. 700

  610. scale.

  611. Hebrews 2

    Hebrews 2:1

  612. verse 1

  613. is something

  614. we must

  615. come back to.

  616. Therefore

  617. we must pay

  618. much closer

  619. attention

  620. to what we

  621. have heard

  622. lest we

  623. drift away

  624. from it.

  625. Lest we

  626. drift away.

  627. Solomon is a

  628. case and

  629. point of what

  630. it means to

  631. drift away.

  632. Solomon got

  633. lax

  634. and then he

  635. got lost.

  636. there's nothing

  637. sadder is there

  638. than to see

  639. somebody drift

  640. away.

  641. I think of

  642. some people

  643. that I was

  644. on CU

  645. committee with

  646. so passionate

  647. and ardent

  648. for the

  649. Lord and

  650. at least

  651. two of

  652. their cases

  653. it was

  654. when

  655. unbelieving

  656. females

  657. came into

  658. their lives

  659. that the

  660. drift

  661. catastrophically

  662. happened.

  663. If there's

  664. nothing sadder

  665. than seeing

  666. somebody drift

  667. away there

  668. is nothing

  669. more heart

  670. warming

  671. than to see

  672. people still

  673. going strong

  674. for the

  675. Lord.

  676. Even in

  677. later life.

  678. I had the

  679. joy last

  680. week of

  681. being at

  682. the faith

  683. mission

  684. minister's

  685. breakfast and

  686. there was

  687. John Shearer

  688. talking about

  689. 50 years of

  690. pastoral ministry

  691. and at the

  692. age of 75

  693. he said I

  694. love Jesus

  695. more today

  696. than I did

  697. when I

  698. started.

  699. Isn't that a

  700. great thing

  701. that we

  702. should all

  703. be pursuing?

  704. Now I

  705. dare say

  706. none of

  707. us are

  708. drifting away

  709. into polygamy

  710. at least I

  711. hope not.

  712. however we

  713. can drift

  714. away through

  715. many things

  716. not just

  717. wrong things

  718. but good

  719. things wrongly

  720. prioritized

  721. where we

  722. prioritize job

  723. and pursue

  724. that or

  725. possessions or

  726. reputation or

  727. friendships or

  728. family or

  729. spouses or

  730. hobbies or

  731. leisure activities

  732. all of them

  733. can upset the

  734. course of our

  735. lives and

  736. orientate our

  737. lives away from

  738. the Lord

  739. Jesus.

  740. None of

  741. them are

  742. bad but if

  743. our hearts

  744. let go of

  745. Jesus and

  746. start clinging

  747. to these

  748. more we'll

  749. be in

  750. desperate

  751. danger of

  752. drifting away.

  753. Solomon's

  754. sin surfaces

  755. and that needs

  756. to be a real

  757. warning for us.

  758. Think where

  759. will you be in

  760. your relationship

  761. with Jesus if

  762. you continue on

  763. your current

  764. trajectory?

  765. trajectory?

  766. Where will

  767. you be in

  768. a year's

  769. time?

  770. Five years

  771. time?

  772. Ten years

  773. time?

  774. If you

  775. carry on

  776. on your

  777. current

  778. trajectory

  779. where will

  780. you be?

  781. Will you

  782. be more

  783. in love

  784. with him

  785. or less

  786. in love

  787. with him?

  788. Will you

  789. be walking

  790. closer to

  791. him or

  792. will you

  793. be miles

  794. away?

  795. If you

  796. continue on

  797. your current

  798. trajectory

  799. because the

  800. way to resist

  801. the drift is

  802. to keep

  803. check on

  804. yourself.

  805. what in

  806. your heart

  807. is competing

  808. with Jesus?

  809. What is in

  810. danger of

  811. you clinging

  812. onto more

  813. than the

  814. Lord Jesus?

  815. What baby

  816. snakes are

  817. you stroking

  818. now that

  819. might bite

  820. you then

  821. instead of

  822. stamping on

  823. their head

  824. right now?

  825. Solomon's

  826. issue when

  827. he was old

  828. the sin

  829. that he'd

  830. been storing

  831. up for

  832. ages

  833. surfaced

  834. and manifested

  835. as gross

  836. idolatry.

  837. Solomon's

  838. sin surfaces

  839. but it's

  840. been bubbling

  841. away for

  842. ages

  843. drip,

  844. drip,

  845. drip.

  846. Then we

  847. see Solomon's

  848. worship

  849. wavers

  850. verses 4

  851. to 8.

  852. The true

  853. extent of

  854. Solomon's

  855. half-heartedness

  856. his duplicity

  857. starts to

  858. become apparent

  859. as he sets

  860. up shrines

  861. and pursues

  862. the false

  863. gods of

  864. his foreign

  865. wives

  866. and the

  867. three that

  868. are mentioned

  869. are an

  870. unholy

  871. trinity of

  872. foreign gods

  873. to start

  874. worshipping.

  875. We get

  876. Molech,

  877. the detestable

  878. god of the

  879. Ammonites,

  880. Ashtaroth,

  881. the fertility

  882. god of the

  883. Sidonians,

  884. Chemosh,

  885. the abominable

  886. god of the

  887. Moabites.

  888. This is not

  889. just flirting

  890. with idolatry,

  891. this is jumping

  892. in with both

  893. feet.

  894. Ashtaroth is

  895. the goddess

  896. of the

  897. Sidonians,

  898. whom you

  899. worship with

  900. your glands

  901. for whom

  902. sex is

  903. the way

  904. you worship

  905. particularly

  906. involving

  907. temple

  908. prostitutes

  909. and rituals.

  910. Chemosh

  911. and Molech

  912. are described

  913. as detestable

  914. gods or

  915. abominations.

  916. We have

  917. loads of

  918. evidence saying

  919. that their

  920. worship involved

  921. child sacrifice.

  922. Leviticus

  923. 18, 21,

  924. you shall not

  925. give any of

  926. your children

  927. to offer

  928. them to

  929. Molech,

  930. and so

  931. profane the

  932. name of

  933. your God,

  934. I am the

  935. Lord.

  936. We have

  937. extra

  938. biblical

  939. evidence of

  940. what worship

  941. of Molech

  942. looked like.

  943. One historian

  944. comments,

  945. worship of

  946. Molech

  947. included people

  948. burning their

  949. own children

  950. to death

  951. in fire,

  952. often by

  953. placing them

  954. in the arms

  955. of a hollow

  956. metal idol

  957. of Molech

  958. that had

  959. been heated

  960. very hot

  961. with a

  962. fire and

  963. they're

  964. burnt

  965. inside.

  966. Terrifying.

  967. You have

  968. to say

  969. that on

  970. the back

  971. of Solomon's

  972. prayer,

  973. in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 8:59

  974. 8,

  975. verse 59,

  976. let me read

  977. that for

  978. you.

  979. And may

  980. these words

  981. of mine

  982. which I

  983. have prayed

  984. before the

  985. Lord,

  986. be near

  987. the Lord

  988. our God

  989. day and

  990. night,

  991. that he

  992. may uphold

  993. the cause

  994. of his

  995. servant

  996. and the

  997. cause of

  998. his people

  999. Israel

  1000. according to

  1001. each day's

  1002. need,

  1003. so that

  1004. all the

  1005. peoples of

  1006. the earth

  1007. may know

  1008. that the

  1009. Lord is

  1010. God and

  1011. that there

  1012. is no

  1013. other.

  1014. Terrifying.

  1015. That is his

  1016. declaration and

  1017. here we see

  1018. the Lord

  1019. Molech,

  1020. Lord Chemosh

  1021. and Lady

  1022. Ashtaroth have

  1023. moved into

  1024. town.

  1025. Notice as

  1026. well that he

  1027. erects a high

  1028. place east of

  1029. Jerusalem,

  1030. on the mountain

  1031. east of

  1032. Jerusalem on

  1033. the hill.

  1034. This would be

  1035. known later in

  1036. the Bible as

  1037. the Mount

  1038. of Olives.

  1039. That this

  1040. high place

  1041. is within

  1042. sight of the

  1043. temple mound

  1044. that Solomon

  1045. has spent

  1046. seven years

  1047. building as

  1048. a majestic

  1049. representation of

  1050. where God

  1051. dwells on

  1052. earth.

  1053. And later in

  1054. life what's he

  1055. doing?

  1056. He's building a

  1057. high place

  1058. to Chemosh

  1059. the detestable

  1060. God of

  1061. Moab and

  1062. for Molech

  1063. the detestable

  1064. God of the

  1065. Amorites.

  1066. Within the

  1067. very few

  1068. of God's

  1069. dwelling

  1070. place.

  1071. Terrifying

  1072. how far

  1073. Solomon has

  1074. fallen.

  1075. Notice as

  1076. well that

  1077. these three

  1078. are just

  1079. the tip

  1080. of the

  1081. iceberg.

  1082. Verse 8

  1083. he did

  1084. the same

  1085. for all

  1086. his foreign

  1087. wives.

  1088. Potentially

  1089. another

  1090. 697

  1091. shrines

  1092. going up

  1093. around the

  1094. place.

  1095. Terrifying

  1096. how deep

  1097. in idolatry

  1098. Solomon is

  1099. falling.

  1100. Jerusalem

  1101. turns into

  1102. a smorgasbord

  1103. of cult

  1104. deities and

  1105. idols.

  1106. The wheels

  1107. have fallen

  1108. off and

  1109. they've

  1110. rolled down

  1111. the hill.

  1112. Solomon's

  1113. poisoned

  1114. pluralistic

  1115. heart now

  1116. flows into

  1117. polytheistic

  1118. paganism.

  1119. And you

  1120. have to say

  1121. Solomon would

  1122. do quite

  1123. well in

  1124. the 21st

  1125. century.

  1126. Pluralism

  1127. is the

  1128. spirit of

  1129. the age.

  1130. A place

  1131. where anything

  1132. goes as

  1133. long as

  1134. everything

  1135. goes.

  1136. A place

  1137. where the

  1138. only thing

  1139. you cannot

  1140. claim is

  1141. that your

  1142. God is

  1143. the only

  1144. God's.

  1145. Your way

  1146. is the

  1147. only way.

  1148. Your

  1149. worship is

  1150. the only

  1151. acceptable

  1152. worship.

  1153. That

  1154. Solomon's

  1155. Jerusalem

  1156. is like

  1157. 21st

  1158. century

  1159. Britain,

  1160. a place

  1161. where

  1162. tolerance,

  1163. acceptance

  1164. and

  1165. inclusivism

  1166. are

  1167. treasured

  1168. above

  1169. truth,

  1170. holiness

  1171. and

  1172. devotion.

  1173. A place

  1174. where Solomon's

  1175. actions

  1176. would be

  1177. reported as

  1178. broadening

  1179. his

  1180. horizons,

  1181. exploring

  1182. other realms

  1183. of

  1184. spirituality.

  1185. See

  1186. though what

  1187. the

  1188. chronicler

  1189. calls it

  1190. in verse

  1191. 6.

  1192. This is

  1193. not open

  1194. mindedness,

  1195. this is not

  1196. inclusivism.

  1197. Solomon did

  1198. evil in the

  1199. eyes of the

  1200. Lord.

  1201. Solomon did

  1202. evil in the

  1203. eyes of the

  1204. Lord.

  1205. His drifting

  1206. from God

  1207. turns into

  1208. evil

  1209. against

  1210. God.

  1211. Resist

  1212. the drift.

  1213. Don't

  1214. accommodate.

  1215. Cling to

  1216. Christ.

  1217. Resist

  1218. the drift.

  1219. Our

  1220. culture says

  1221. don't be so

  1222. narrow-minded.

  1223. Don't be so

  1224. arrogant as to

  1225. think that

  1226. Jesus is the

  1227. only way and

  1228. you can see

  1229. how we just

  1230. start to

  1231. drift.

  1232. resist the

  1233. drift.

  1234. Don't

  1235. accommodate.

  1236. Cling to

  1237. Christ.

  1238. Well that

  1239. won't happen

  1240. to me we

  1241. say.

  1242. I'm not like

  1243. Solomon.

  1244. That's not how

  1245. Nehemiah sees it

  1246. in the end of

  1247. his writing.

  1248. He writes

  1249. this to the

  1250. Israelites who

  1251. were also

  1252. courting

  1253. foreign

  1254. ladies.

  1255. Solomon

  1256. king of

  1257. Israel

  1258. sin on

  1259. account of

  1260. such

  1261. women.

  1262. Among the

  1263. many

  1264. nations there

  1265. was no

  1266. king like

  1267. him and

  1268. he was

  1269. beloved by

  1270. his God

  1271. and God

  1272. made him

  1273. king over

  1274. all Israel.

  1275. Nevertheless

  1276. foreign

  1277. women made

  1278. even him

  1279. to sin.

  1280. Nehemiah

  1281. very much

  1282. sees it that

  1283. if Solomon

  1284. is susceptible

  1285. to it then we

  1286. must be very

  1287. careful.

  1288. that if

  1289. Solomon can

  1290. fall so

  1291. drastically

  1292. be careful

  1293. if you think

  1294. you can

  1295. stand

  1296. lest you

  1297. fall.

  1298. A daily

  1299. devotion to

  1300. the Lord

  1301. getting up

  1302. each and

  1303. every day

  1304. Jesus I

  1305. love you

  1306. Jesus I

  1307. want to

  1308. walk with

  1309. you Jesus

  1310. I want to

  1311. cling to

  1312. you.

  1313. And tomorrow

  1314. just repeat

  1315. Jesus I

  1316. love you

  1317. Jesus I

  1318. want to

  1319. walk with

  1320. you Jesus

  1321. I want to

  1322. cling.

  1323. Tie up

  1324. tightly to

  1325. Christ.

  1326. Pay close

  1327. attention lest

  1328. we drift

  1329. away.

  1330. We finish

  1331. with this

  1332. Yahweh's

  1333. fury

  1334. fueled.

  1335. Verse 9

  1336. The Lord

  1337. became angry

  1338. with Solomon.

  1339. The Lord

  1340. became angry

  1341. with Solomon

  1342. as the

  1343. nauseating

  1344. smell of

  1345. idolatry

  1346. enters the

  1347. nostrils of

  1348. God.

  1349. It evokes

  1350. a visceral

  1351. reaction.

  1352. Solomon

  1353. so gifted

  1354. by God.

  1355. Solomon to

  1356. whom God

  1357. appeared

  1358. twice.

  1359. He has

  1360. loads of

  1361. evidence.

  1362. He's not

  1363. doing this

  1364. in ignorance

  1365. he's doing

  1366. it in

  1367. arrogance.

  1368. Solomon's

  1369. drifted away.

  1370. He's turned

  1371. his back on

  1372. God.

  1373. He's turned

  1374. his heart

  1375. away from

  1376. God.

  1377. And

  1378. judgment

  1379. falls.

  1380. And his

  1381. sin has

  1382. consequences.

  1383. Jesus.

  1384. This is

  1385. going to

  1386. do major

  1387. damage to

  1388. his people.

  1389. Solomon's

  1390. kingdom had

  1391. been a

  1392. place of

  1393. peace.

  1394. And it

  1395. says at

  1396. least three

  1397. times that

  1398. Solomon's

  1399. subjects were

  1400. happy.

  1401. And now

  1402. Solomon's

  1403. kingdom is

  1404. going to be

  1405. divided and

  1406. split.

  1407. It's not

  1408. going to be a

  1409. place of

  1410. peace.

  1411. It's going

  1412. to be a

  1413. place of

  1414. division.

  1415. It's not

  1416. going to be a

  1417. place of good

  1418. kings.

  1419. it's going

  1420. to be a

  1421. place of

  1422. bad kings

  1423. with the

  1424. odd

  1425. exception.

  1426. Look at

  1427. verse 11.

  1428. So the

  1429. Lord said to

  1430. Solomon,

  1431. since this is

  1432. your attitude

  1433. and you have

  1434. not kept my

  1435. covenant and

  1436. decrees,

  1437. which I

  1438. commanded you,

  1439. I will most

  1440. certainly tear

  1441. the kingdom

  1442. away from

  1443. you and

  1444. give it to

  1445. one of your

  1446. subordinates.

  1447. Solomon

  1448. clings to

  1449. his wives.

  1450. What does

  1451. God do?

  1452. He tears

  1453. the kingdom

  1454. out of his

  1455. hands.

  1456. Nevertheless,

  1457. for the sake

  1458. of David,

  1459. your father,

  1460. I will not

  1461. do it in

  1462. your lifetime.

  1463. I will tear

  1464. it out of

  1465. the hand

  1466. of your

  1467. son.

  1468. Yet I

  1469. will not

  1470. tear the

  1471. whole kingdom

  1472. from him,

  1473. but will

  1474. give him

  1475. one tribe

  1476. for the

  1477. sake of

  1478. David,

  1479. my servant,

  1480. and for

  1481. the sake

  1482. of Jerusalem,

  1483. which I

  1484. have chosen.

  1485. A divided

  1486. kingdom will

  1487. be the

  1488. penalty for

  1489. Solomon's

  1490. blatant

  1491. disobedience.

  1492. The rest

  1493. of chapter

  1494. 11 is

  1495. going to be

  1496. all about

  1497. these seeds

  1498. of division

  1499. being sown.

  1500. As Hadad

  1501. and Rezon

  1502. and Jeroboam

  1503. are raised

  1504. up as

  1505. adversaries,

  1506. Solomon's

  1507. know nothing

  1508. but peace

  1509. and now

  1510. adversaries

  1511. are raised

  1512. up.

  1513. Solomon's

  1514. reign that

  1515. had been

  1516. plain sailing

  1517. now has

  1518. tumultuous

  1519. storm clouds

  1520. brewing in

  1521. the distance.

  1522. Yet see,

  1523. and with this

  1524. we finish,

  1525. there's hope

  1526. even amidst

  1527. judgment.

  1528. that even

  1529. when God

  1530. is angry

  1531. because of

  1532. this evil

  1533. that Solomon

  1534. has perpetrated,

  1535. see that

  1536. there's grace

  1537. in the midst

  1538. of it.

  1539. I will not

  1540. tear the

  1541. whole kingdom

  1542. away,

  1543. but on account

  1544. of my

  1545. covenant,

  1546. God,

  1547. despite his

  1548. anger,

  1549. will remain

  1550. utterly faithful

  1551. to the covenant

  1552. that he made.

  1553. that even

  1554. though Solomon

  1555. has broken

  1556. the covenant,

  1557. God will

  1558. keep the

  1559. covenant.

  1560. He will

  1561. have one

  1562. tribe.

  1563. He will

  1564. keep Judah

  1565. as it

  1566. turns out.

  1567. This is the

  1568. great hope

  1569. of the

  1570. gospel,

  1571. that our

  1572. salvation is

  1573. not dependent

  1574. on how much

  1575. we love

  1576. God,

  1577. but on how

  1578. much he

  1579. loves us.

  1580. that even

  1581. though we

  1582. break covenant

  1583. with him,

  1584. he will

  1585. keep it

  1586. forever.

  1587. That his

  1588. unfailing

  1589. love will

  1590. never fail.

  1591. One tribe

  1592. is ultimately

  1593. preserved,

  1594. the tribe

  1595. of Judah,

  1596. from which

  1597. would come

  1598. the one,

  1599. the lion

  1600. of Judah,

  1601. great David's

  1602. greater son,

  1603. greater than

  1604. Solomon,

  1605. whose undivided

  1606. heart would

  1607. be the ultimate

  1608. remedy of our

  1609. fickle faith.

  1610. One whom on

  1611. the mountain

  1612. east of

  1613. Jerusalem didn't

  1614. flirt with other

  1615. faiths,

  1616. whose half-hearted

  1617. heart didn't

  1618. build high

  1619. places for

  1620. other gods,

  1621. but this one

  1622. who lay

  1623. prostrate,

  1624. sweating drops

  1625. of blood from

  1626. a wholehearted

  1627. heart,

  1628. praying in

  1629. obedience,

  1630. not my will,

  1631. but yours be

  1632. done.

  1633. The ultimate

  1634. expression of

  1635. what it means to

  1636. be a wholehearted,

  1637. obedient,

  1638. worshipper of

  1639. God.

  1640. So there are

  1641. lessons to be

  1642. learned from

  1643. Solomon,

  1644. important lessons

  1645. that cause us

  1646. to take seriously

  1647. the command to

  1648. resist the drift

  1649. and cling each

  1650. and every day to

  1651. Christ.

  1652. We are to do

  1653. exactly what

  1654. Joshua commanded

  1655. God's people as

  1656. they enter at the

  1657. end of the

  1658. conquest of the

  1659. promised land.

  1660. Be very careful

  1661. therefore to love

  1662. the Lord your God.

  1663. Be very careful.

  1664. what Jesus says

  1665. on that night in

  1666. Gethsemane at the

  1667. Mount of Olives,

  1668. watch and pray that

  1669. you may not enter

  1670. into temptation.

  1671. Watch and pray that

  1672. you may not enter

  1673. into temptation.

  1674. 1 Kings 11,

  1675. 36,

  1676. I will give one

  1677. tribe to his son

  1678. so that David,

  1679. my servant,

  1680. may always have a

  1681. lamp before me in

  1682. Jerusalem,

  1683. the city where I

  1684. chose to put my

  1685. name.

  1686. that lamp that

  1687. God preserves

  1688. down the line

  1689. would grow up

  1690. into the light

  1691. of the world.

  1692. He would be

  1693. snuffed out so

  1694. his light could

  1695. shine for all

  1696. eternity on our

  1697. lives.

  1698. Let's pray.

  1699. Father God,

  1700. we pray for

  1701. ourselves and we

  1702. pray for each

  1703. other.

  1704. Father,

  1705. we want to be

  1706. wholehearted

  1707. worshippers.

  1708. Father,

  1709. we don't want to

  1710. treat faith in

  1711. you as a hobby

  1712. or something we

  1713. just do on a

  1714. Sunday.

  1715. Father,

  1716. we want to love

  1717. you and cling to

  1718. you.

  1719. We don't want to

  1720. drift from you

  1721. or turn from you

  1722. or walk away from

  1723. you.

  1724. Father,

  1725. we want to be

  1726. yours and wholly

  1727. yours.

  1728. So,

  1729. Father,

  1730. whether we're

  1731. young,

  1732. may we resist

  1733. the drift.

  1734. May we,

  1735. whether we're

  1736. middle-aged,

  1737. Lord,

  1738. keep us

  1739. clinging to

  1740. Christ.

  1741. And,

  1742. Father,

  1743. may those who

  1744. are old have

  1745. this testimony

  1746. that they love

  1747. Jesus more

  1748. today than

  1749. they ever have

  1750. in their

  1751. lives.

  1752. Father,

  1753. we pray the

  1754. same for our

  1755. church that we

  1756. would not drift

  1757. away.

  1758. But as your

  1759. body of people

  1760. in this place,

  1761. we would cling

  1762. to Christ

  1763. together.

  1764. And,

  1765. Father,

  1766. we would

  1767. encourage each

  1768. other in our

  1769. walk that we

  1770. might walk

  1771. closely to your

  1772. son Jesus,

  1773. who is the

  1774. very epitome

  1775. of what a

  1776. wholehearted

  1777. worshipper is.

  1778. And,

  1779. Lord,

  1780. because of his

  1781. wholeheartedness,

  1782. thank you that

  1783. there's forgiveness

  1784. for when we're

  1785. half-hearted.

  1786. But,

  1787. Lord,

  1788. kindle in us

  1789. such a faith

  1790. and a love

  1791. for your son

  1792. that we will

  1793. worship and

  1794. follow and

  1795. adore him

  1796. all the days

  1797. of our lives.

  1798. We pray this

  1799. not for our

  1800. safety.

  1801. Lord,

  1802. we don't pray

  1803. this for our

  1804. own fame,

  1805. but we pray

  1806. it so that

  1807. Jesus might be

  1808. glorified in

  1809. our lives

  1810. and that

  1811. people might

  1812. see that we

  1813. love him

  1814. most.

  1815. Father,

  1816. bless us and

  1817. help us in

  1818. his glorious,

  1819. all-conquering

  1820. name.

  1821. Amen.
