  1. Please have a seat and let's pray.

  2. Father God, we pray that we might be those that humbly receive your implanted words.

  3. Father, do your work in our lives, we pray.

  4. Be with us in this time and teach us by your Spirit.

  5. We ask this in Jesus' name and for his sake. Amen.

  6. We're in the second installment of We've Got Mail,

  7. this series looking at the letters that the risen Lord Jesus writes to seven churches in Asia Minor or modern day Turkey.

  8. Ian kicked us off last week with this great description in the end of chapter one about the author,

  9. about what the risen Lord Jesus looks like, about what he is, what his character is.

  10. And today we get into the letters properly.

  11. Today we're going to look at the church in Ephesus in Revelation chapter two and verses one to seven.

  12. Everyone has an opinion when it comes to church.

  13. Everybody has an opinion.

  14. Church is too boring.

  15. Church is too exciting.

  16. Church is too modern.

  17. Church is too traditional.

  18. Church is too loud.

  19. Church is too quiet.

  20. Church is too big.

  21. Church is too small.

  22. Church is too formal.

  23. Church is too casual.

  24. The sermons are too long.

  25. Everyone thinks the sermons are too long.

  26. There is no shortage of opinions when it comes to church.

  27. You can buy countless books written by experts about what churches should do,

  28. what churches should be, how churches should run,

  29. what churches should look like.

  30. Just on my bookshelf alone, I have total church, center church, simple church, vintage church,

  31. wiki church, vertical church, transformational church, everyday church, urban church, organic church,

  32. slow church, provocative church, deliberate church, disappearing church, spirit-filled church,

  33. mission-shaped church, gospel-centered church, and purpose-driven church.

  34. There is no shortage of opinions when it comes to church.

  35. Some of them are great.

  36. It's good to have opinions about church.

  37. But there is one opinion that matters over and above everything else,

  38. what the Lord Jesus thinks and says about his church.

  39. What he says is good.

  40. What he says is bad.

  41. That must be the primary opinion that matters in our churches and in our lives.

  42. His opinion ultimately matters.

  43. His advice must ultimately be heeded.

  44. And his verdict about church will be ultimately decisive.

  45. And so in Revelation chapter 2 and chapter 3, we have these seven letters written to seven churches in modern-day Turkey.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  46. They are real churches, but they are also representative churches.

  47. There are lots and lots and lots of churches in Asia Minor when Jesus dictates these letters.

  48. But these are the seven he writes to, and these are the seven that represent what church is.

  49. Letters dictated to the Apostle John on the island of Patmos by the risen Lord Jesus.

  50. And they are so relevant to us.

  51. Even though they're written 2,000 years ago to a context that is quite different to 21st century Edinburgh.

  52. They are incredibly potent.

  53. They are ferociously contemporary.

  54. Why?

  55. Because people haven't ultimately changed.

  56. Because church hasn't ultimately changed.

  57. Because Jesus certainly hasn't changed.

  58. And truth remains truth.

  59. These letters are written to them, but they're for us.

  60. What the Spirit says to these churches, the Spirit is saying to us today.

  61. And they follow a regular framework.

  62. The seven churches all follow a very similar pattern.

  63. And it starts with an inscription.

  64. Jesus says to the message bearer of the church in Ephesus, right, there is a command to make an inscription.

  65. Then there's a description of the author.

  66. To him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  67. Always a description.

  68. A description that is picked up from the end of chapter 1.

  69. And that is incredibly pertinent to the church that Jesus is writing to.

  70. After the description, you get a commendation.

  71. Jesus says what they're doing well.

  72. I know, he says.

  73. And after the commendation, there's usually an accusation.

  74. Yet this I hold against you, but this I hold against you.

  75. After the accusation, there's an instruction.

  76. This is what you're to do about it.

  77. This is your steps to change and to bring your church back in line with what I want your church to look like.

  78. After that, there's an exhortation.

  79. Either in the form of a warning or a promise.

  80. And then an affirmation.

  81. He relays a promise to them.

  82. To him who overcomes.

  83. That word overcome is the word Nike.

  84. The word, the one that is victorious.

  85. To the one that is victorious, I will do this.

  86. And then it finishes with an invitation.

  87. To those who have ears to hear, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  88. And understanding that not everyone who gets the mail will understand what Jesus is saying.

  89. There will be an invitation.

  90. And the seven churches are different.

  91. I tried to write a three-word review for each of them.

  92. Ephesus is sound but hollow.

  93. We'll see more of that in a sec.

  94. Smyrna is vibrant but fearful.

  95. Pergamum is evangelistic but undiscerning.

  96. Thyatira is loving but naive.

  97. Sardis is hypocritical and sleeping.

  98. Philadelphia is struggling but strong.

  99. Laodicea is affluent and apathetic.

  100. To two churches, Jesus says nothing bad.

  101. To two churches, Jesus says nothing good.

  102. And to three churches, they get a mixed report.

  103. And Ephesus is a church that gets a mixed report.

  104. And the key for us over these seven weeks is not to diagnose what sort of church we are.

  105. We're not going to say, we're not going to rebrand.

  106. It's no longer Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  107. It's Pergamum Evangelical Church because we think that letter fits us.

  108. The key is to listen to what Jesus says, to discern what a healthy church looks like,

  109. and to spend all our energy and effort trying to orientate our church in line with what he says is best.

  110. So if you've got a Bible, turn with me to Revelation chapter 2, and we'll read these seven verses.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  111. John writes,

  112. The letter to the church in Ephesus.

  113. And Ephesus is a major city.

  114. It is affluent.

  115. It is multicultural.

  116. It is pluralistic.

  117. It is the melting pot of lots of different cultures.

  118. It's at the intersection of three of the big trade routes of the ancient world.

  119. It was a church that was planted by Paul.

  120. He spent about three years there teaching and discipling and getting the church off the ground.

  121. It's pastored by Timothy, his right-hand man, during a very problematic period.

  122. It's invested in heavily by the dynamic duo of Priscilla and Aquila.

  123. And latterly, church history tells us that Ephesus becomes the base of operations of John,

  124. who's writing these letters down.

  125. John acts as some kind of overseer and bishop of all of Asia Minor,

  126. and he has his base in Ephesus.

  127. And it is to this church that Jesus writes his first letter.

  128. In the middle of this vibrant city, this large city, there is a real church of Jesus Christ.

  129. I like to call it Ephesus Evangelical Church, but I'm biased.

  130. And Jesus describes himself as the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand

  131. and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  132. It is Jesus who holds the churches.

  133. He is the one who upholds them.

  134. He is the one that ensures they keep on going.

  135. He is the one sovereign over them.

  136. But see, he's also the one who walks among them.

  137. This idea of walking among takes us all the way back to Genesis chapter 3 verse 8,

    Genesis 3:8

  138. where the God of the universe would walk with Adam and Eve amidst his creation with his people.

  139. And here we see the risen Lord Jesus walking amidst and amongst his people.

  140. This idea that in the church, God's people have fellowship with God through the Lord Jesus,

  141. who is with them.

  142. And Jesus commends them in four ways.

  143. He gives them a cracking commendation.

  144. Four of them.

  145. The first thing he commends them for is their perspiration.

  146. He says, I know your deeds, your hard work.

  147. That phrase hard work is literally sweaty toil.

  148. I know your sweaty toil.

  149. I've seen your t-shirt ringing with sweats.

  150. He says, I know.

  151. These are comforting words.

  152. He's not saying, I've read a report or I've heard a rumor or I've made an assumption.

  153. He says, I know.

  154. That the Lord Jesus who walks amongst his churches knows.

  155. I know your sweaty toil.

  156. He's saying, Ephesus, you're a very active church.

  157. You're a church of doers.

  158. You love rolling your sleeves up and getting your hands dirty.

  159. You love to be busy in the work of the Lord.

  160. You all put your hands to the plow and your shoulder to the wheel.

  161. It's hard work modeled by Paul back in the day.

  162. In Acts chapter 20, he says,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  163. In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way,

  164. you can take care of the poor and build the church of God.

  165. Jesus commends them for their perspiration.

  166. That in Jesus' eyes, he values sweaty toil.

  167. And so if he values sweaty toil, would sweaty toil describe your Christian walk

  168. and Christian service of the Lord Jesus?

  169. Perspiration for the Lord.

  170. Working hard.

  171. Because Jesus says, I commend that kind of effort.

  172. The second thing Jesus commends them for is their perseverance.

  173. Look at 2B.

  174. He says, I know your perseverance.

  175. Or verse 3.

  176. You have persevered and have endured hardship for my name.

  177. And have not grown weary.

  178. Second thing about the Ephesians is not that they're just sweaty and toil,

  179. but they keep going.

  180. They keep moving forward.

  181. They keep trying hard.

  182. Even amidst persecution, they haven't grown weary.

  183. Ephesus is a tough place to be a Christian.

  184. In this kind of multicultural, riot sensitive,

  185. with the temple of Artemis over and above,

  186. a very partisan crowd.

  187. It's dangerous to be a Christian,

  188. and yet the Ephesian Christians keep on going.

  189. To own the name of Jesus in Ephesus

  190. was to put yourself in the crosshair of the culture.

  191. And Jesus says, you've done that.

  192. And you've kept on going.

  193. You've persevered even though it costs.

  194. Now, as I look at Brunsfield,

  195. I think we've got some wonderful examples of people who persevere.

  196. People who have gone through tough times or difficult times,

  197. worrying times, and have just kept on going.

  198. And we learn from Ephesus

  199. that Jesus commands perseverance.

  200. Thirdly, he commends them for their purity.

  201. The last bit of verse 2.

  202. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people.

  203. Or verse 6.

  204. But you have this in your favor.

  205. You hate the practice of the Nicolaitans,

  206. which I also hate.

  207. Jesus says, I know you cannot tolerate wicked people.

  208. You have an aversion to sin.

  209. You disassociate from people who are not living holy lives.

  210. Ephesus is a people who don't walk in step with the wicked,

  211. who don't stand in the way of sinners,

  212. or sit in the company of mockers.

  213. They don't tolerate wicked people.

  214. And they also hate the Nicolaitans.

  215. We don't know really much about the Nicolaitans,

  216. except that they seem to be this antinomian,

  217. ultra-Christian, liberal sect,

  218. who say, we are free in Christ,

  219. we can do whatever we want.

  220. Grace is sufficient.

  221. We can be licentious and promiscuous.

  222. We can be sexually immoral.

  223. We can be drunkards because Jesus has freed us.

  224. And actually, the worst we get,

  225. we're just showing how great Jesus is.

  226. And Jesus commends them for their purity.

  227. Don't associate with wicked people.

  228. And you hate the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

  229. And then their fourth commendation is that

  230. they preserve truth.

  231. They preserve truth.

  232. That you have tested those who claim to be apostles,

  233. but are not.

  234. And have found them false.

  235. They are committed to contending for the faith,

  236. once for all, delivered to the saints.

  237. They can smell a rat.

  238. They know their Bibles,

  239. and when people start sharing things

  240. that aren't from the Bible,

  241. they go, well, no.

  242. We're going to stop you there.

  243. In preaching and teaching,

  244. they are like the Bereans of Acts.

  245. They receive the message with eagerness.

  246. They love the truth.

  247. But they examine the Scriptures daily to test

  248. whether what is being shared is from God.

  249. Not cynical conspiracy.

  250. Not always trying to pick up on every mistake

  251. and every little slip of the tongue.

  252. But if it doesn't chime with the truth,

  253. they're on it.

  254. And they say, we're going to have to stop you there.

  255. Don't worry about coming and sharing next week.

  256. We'll sort someone out.

  257. There's an eager and examining heart,

  258. not gormless and gullible.

  259. And you have to say, on the strength of that,

  260. Ephesus is a pretty splendid church.

  261. It's doing really well.

  262. They're hardworking, striving for holiness,

  263. keep going even when it's tough,

  264. orthodox and sound, committed to God's truth.

  265. Who wouldn't want to be part of the church in Ephesus.

  266. You can imagine, as the guy reads this out,

  267. everyone's high-fiving, group hug,

  268. let's make sure we get this on the front page

  269. of the website,

  270. that the Lord Jesus, our Lord and Head,

  271. says we're good at these four things.

  272. But then verse four comes.

  273. And stinging criticism follows.

  274. Yet I hold this against you.

  275. You have forsaken the love you had at first.

  276. This is a crushing verdict.

  277. This is the criticism that totally overwhelms

  278. all the commendation.

  279. This is the one test you don't want to fail.

  280. This is the church of the tin man.

  281. Shiny and splendid.

  282. Dynamic and active.

  283. And yet as we learn from the Wizard of Oz,

  284. what's his problem?

  285. He doesn't have a heart.

  286. And so the church in Ephesus

  287. is like Dorothy's friend, the tin man.

  288. Shiny and splendid.

  289. Dynamic and hardworking.

  290. Truth-loving and striving to be holy,

  291. but doesn't have a heart.

  292. It's hollow on the inside.

  293. And from the Lord Jesus, that is a fail.

  294. That is a massive problem

  295. that they need to do something

  296. serious about.

  297. Jesus really does value hard work

  298. and holiness and perseverance

  299. and soundness.

  300. But absent of love,

  301. they're completely null and void.

  302. It's rendered everything else that is good,

  303. bad, because it is superficial

  304. and not growing out of a loving

  305. and expanding heart.

  306. Ephesus, it seems,

  307. has morphed into Corinth.

  308. If I speak in the tongues of men and angels,

  309. but do not have love,

  310. I am only a resounding gong

  311. or a clanging cymbal.

  312. If I have the gift of prophecy

  313. and can fathom all mysteries

  314. and all knowledge,

  315. and if I have a faith

  316. that can move mountains,

  317. but do not love,

  318. I am nothing.

  319. If I give all I possess to the poor

  320. and give over my body to a hardship

  321. that I may boast,

  322. but do not have love,

  323. I gain nothing.

  324. Ephesus has become Corinth.

  325. And it seems that this love

  326. is particularly horizontal love,

  327. love for each other.

  328. There is a lack of life-giving fellowship

  329. in the church.

  330. A lack of love for people in the church,

  331. but also a lack of love

  332. outside of the church.

  333. They have no burden for the lost

  334. or no concern.

  335. Church that runs great,

  336. but is only superficial.

  337. A lack of life-giving fellowship,

  338. a lack of life-changing mission.

  339. They're great at stopping

  340. the world's message

  341. getting into the church,

  342. but they're terrible

  343. at getting the church's message

  344. into each other

  345. and out into the world.

  346. And so what are they to do?

  347. They've fallen a long way.

  348. Paul wrote to them in Ephesians,

  349. for this reason,

  350. ever since I heard about your faith

  351. in the Lord Jesus

  352. and your love for all God's people,

  353. I have not stopped giving thanks for you.

  354. Remember you in my prayers.

  355. Now it seems they're cold

  356. and loveless,

  357. going through the motions,

  358. absent of love.

  359. You're a church of tin men.

  360. Hard work,

  361. but heartless work.

  362. Holiness,

  363. but potentially legalistic

  364. because it's not done out of love

  365. for the Lord Jesus.

  366. Orthodoxy,

  367. but maybe dry and dusty

  368. because it's not bringing about

  369. worship and love

  370. for the Lord Jesus.

  371. What are they to do?

  372. Three things.

  373. Verse five,

  374. remember.

  375. Consider how far

  376. you have fallen.

  377. Consider what you used to do.

  378. Consider what you were like

  379. when I heard about your love

  380. for all God's people

  381. and never stopped giving thanks

  382. as poor.

  383. Remember those days.

  384. Do you know when

  385. I've had the very few opportunities

  386. to help people

  387. whose marriages are struggling?

  388. And one of the great questions is,

  389. talk to me about a time

  390. when you got on really well,

  391. loved each other

  392. and your marriage was strong.

  393. And it suddenly dawns on them

  394. that once they liked each other.

  395. And Paul is saying,

  396. get back to those days

  397. where you liked each other.

  398. Where you were gracious

  399. and loving,

  400. where you were concerned,

  401. where your hearts

  402. were bursting

  403. with love for the saints

  404. and your minds

  405. were buzzing

  406. with how you could

  407. help and bless

  408. and serve each other.

  409. When it wasn't

  410. an academic exercise,

  411. but it was an adoration

  412. exercise.

  413. when it wasn't joyless duty,

  414. but joyous delight.

  415. He's saying,

  416. remember those days.

  417. Consider how far you've fallen.

  418. Go back

  419. to what you did at first.

  420. And then he says,

  421. repent.

  422. Repent.

  423. A change of mind

  424. leading to a change of direction.

  425. Change how you think

  426. about church.

  427. Change how you think

  428. about each other.

  429. Reignite a passion

  430. for one another

  431. deep in your soul.

  432. When you weren't

  433. just going to church,

  434. but you were church.

  435. When you weren't

  436. just doing services,

  437. but you were being family.

  438. And then he says,

  439. once you've repented,

  440. you've changed your mind.

  441. Repeat.

  442. Do the things you did

  443. at first.

  444. Serve others.

  445. Contribute.

  446. Don't just consume.

  447. Don't be tin men

  448. any more.

  449. Remember what you used to do.

  450. Repent and get back

  451. to the early days.

  452. Repeat what you used to do

  453. at first.

  454. In order that Ephesus

  455. might be a place

  456. of life-giving fellowship

  457. and life-changing mission.

  458. A loving church

  459. is a church

  460. that hangs in together

  461. and goes out

  462. together.

  463. Brunsfield,

  464. a place of life-giving

  465. fellowship

  466. and life-changing mission.

  467. It's so easy,

  468. isn't it,

  469. to retreat to a

  470. satisfactory working

  471. relationship

  472. with each other,

  473. with the Lord Jesus.

  474. Retreating

  475. to just rubbing

  476. shoulders

  477. rather than having

  478. a deepening

  479. relationship

  480. with each other.

  481. Jesus says

  482. to the church,

  483. you need to remember,

  484. repent and repeat.

  485. Remember,

  486. repent and repeat.

  487. And like all good

  488. letters,

  489. Jesus ends

  490. with a conclusion.

  491. He says this,

  492. end of verse 5,

  493. if you do not repent,

  494. I will come to you

  495. and remove your lampstand

  496. from its place.

  497. And then he says,

  498. whoever has ears to hear,

  499. let them hear.

  500. What the Spirit says

  501. to the church

  502. is to the one

  503. who is victorious,

  504. I will give the right

  505. to eat from the tree

  506. of life,

  507. which is in the paradise

  508. of God.

  509. Jesus' conclusion

  510. has a warning

  511. and a promise.

  512. And the warning

  513. is this,

  514. if you don't change,

  515. if you don't remember,

  516. repent and repeat,

  517. I will destroy

  518. and disband your church.

  519. It's that serious.

  520. Jesus will not tolerate

  521. a counterfeit version

  522. of his church

  523. representing his name

  524. to other people.

  525. He says,

  526. if you don't change,

  527. the end is coming

  528. for Ephesus'

  529. evangelical church.

  530. If people will know

  531. Jesus' disciples

  532. by the way they love

  533. one another,

  534. then to be loveless

  535. is to be anonymous

  536. in Jesus' eyes.

  537. And therefore,

  538. if you don't sort it out,

  539. the lights will go off.

  540. It's a serious situation.

  541. Ten for effort.

  542. Ten for holiness.

  543. Ten for orthodoxy.

  544. Ten for perseverance.

  545. But the church

  546. is on its last legs

  547. because there's no love.

  548. Hard hearts,

  549. calloused over time,

  550. passionless formalism.

  551. The church of the tin man.

  552. Serious.

  553. You need to take action

  554. now.

  555. But he leaves

  556. with a wonderful promise.

  557. To the one who overcomes.

  558. To the Nike people.

  559. I will give the right

  560. to eat from the tree of life.

  561. It will be like

  562. going back to Eden.

  563. It will be being

  564. in God's place,

  565. having fellowship with God

  566. in a real

  567. and full way.

  568. The hope of heaven

  569. in the future

  570. but seen

  571. as a working model

  572. in the life

  573. of the church now.

  574. That the one

  575. who walks amongst

  576. the lampstands

  577. will walk amongst

  578. his people again.

  579. Those who have ears

  580. let them hear.

  581. So what about Brunsfield?

  582. Well, we want to be

  583. the best of Ephesus.

  584. The best of Ephesus.

  585. We want to be commended

  586. for all the things

  587. Ephesus are commended for.

  588. Working hard,

  589. standing firm,

  590. suffering long

  591. and being set apart.

  592. But we've got to be

  593. better than Ephesus

  594. as a place

  595. that loves

  596. much.

  597. Well, I must go to Oz

  598. and get my heart,

  599. said the tin man.

  600. So he walked

  601. to the throne room

  602. and knocked at the door.

  603. Come in,

  604. called Oz.

  605. And the tin man

  606. entered and said,

  607. I have come for my heart.

  608. Very well,

  609. answered the little man.

  610. But I shall have to

  611. cut a hole in your breast

  612. so I can put your heart

  613. in the right place.

  614. I hope it won't hurt you.

  615. Oh no,

  616. answered the tin man.

  617. I shall not feel it at all.

  618. So Oz bought

  619. a pair of tin smith shears

  620. and cut a small square hole

  621. in the left side

  622. of the tin man's

  623. tin man's breast.

  624. Then,

  625. going to a chest of drawers,

  626. he took out

  627. a pretty heart

  628. made entirely of silk

  629. and suffered,

  630. stuffed with sawdust.

  631. Isn't it a beauty,

  632. he asked.

  633. It is indeed,

  634. replied the tin man.

  635. He was greatly pleased.

  636. But is it a kind heart,

  637. asked the tin man.

  638. Oh very,

  639. answered Oz.

  640. Let's pray.

  641. Almighty God,

  642. to whom all hearts are opened,

  643. all desires known,

  644. and from whom

  645. no secrets are hidden,

  646. cleanse the thoughts

  647. of our hearts,

  648. encourage the size

  649. of our hearts,

  650. inflame the warmth

  651. of our hearts,

  652. enrich our compromised hearts.

  653. And do this

  654. by the inspiration

  655. of your Holy Spirit,

  656. that we may

  657. perfectly love you

  658. and sacrificially

  659. love each other

  660. and worthily magnify

  661. your name

  662. to those outside.

  663. We pray this

  664. through Jesus Christ,

  665. our Lord.

  666. Amen.

  667. Amen.

  668. Thank you.
