  1. Well, good morning to you all. It's a real pleasure to be here at Brunsfield Evangelical

  2. Church this Sunday morning and to worship with you. And I'm very grateful for the invitation

  3. to preach as we take on the next three verses in the wonderful and sometimes difficult book

  4. of Revelation. And we're looking at the second of the seven letters that we're working through,

  5. a letter to this young, hard-pressed church in the city of Smyrna, a city that would now fall under

  6. the boundaries of modern-day Turkey. So I'd invite you to open a Bible as we look at Revelation

    Revelation 2:8–11

  7. chapter 2, verses 8 to 11.

  8. To the angel of the church in Smyrna write,

  9. These are the words of him who is the first and the last, who died and came to life again.

  10. I know your afflictions and your poverty, yet you are rich. I know about the slander of those who

  11. say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not be afraid of what you're about to

  12. suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer

  13. persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life

  14. as your victor's crown. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  15. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

  16. Let me just invite you to join me as we pray together.

  17. Our gracious Heavenly Father,

  18. when we're honest, we have to confess that sometimes we struggle to understand

  19. what you're saying. And sometimes we can be slow to place our trust in you.

  20. And sometimes even when we understand, we're reluctant to respond.

  21. As we gather here this morning, we thank you for your word,

  22. trusting in faith that the Bible speaks to us today,

  23. and acknowledging that we need your help

  24. if we are to hear it and respond rightly to it.

  25. So by your word and your spirit, speak, and help us to love you more, to know you better,

  26. and to respond again to the wonderful command and promise of the gospel.

  27. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

  28. Until very recently, until May of this year, I was a student here in Edinburgh.

  29. I was studying theology, and one of my classmates,

  30. I'm going to change his name for reasons that might soon become obvious,

  31. let's call him Stephen.

  32. One of my classmates made the brave and unusual decision

  33. to invite me and my wife round for dinner.

  34. Now, I rarely say no to a dinner invite,

  35. and at the set time, my wife and I turned up at Stephen's flat.

  36. And at this point, I should point out that neither Stephen nor his wife are from Scotland.

  37. They are international students who had travelled to Edinburgh

  38. to spend time studying here, and they were from China.

  39. And as we stood on the doorstep, and as I was talking to my wife,

  40. I was already anticipating some cultural differences.

  41. For one, this may surprise you, I don't speak Mandarin.

  42. To my consternation, neither did my wife,

  43. and I knew that Stephen's wife, at the very least, did not speak English.

  44. And as we walked in the door, we were invited to exchange our shoes for slippers,

  45. and I was very quickly given a fresh opportunity to embarrass myself with chopsticks.

  46. And it was a really good evening.

  47. We laughed, we talked, and we realized that Stephen, like me,

  48. similar age, Christian, training for full-time Christian work,

  49. lots in common, loves family, loves food.

  50. And you could see, in a sense, that our lives were on parallel tracks.

  51. But then we started talking beyond our studies, what was coming next,

  52. and then things suddenly peeled off in very different directions.

  53. For me, it seemed quite straightforward.

  54. I had to do certain placements.

  55. I had to gain certain experience,

  56. and then one day hoped to serve in a useful way in a church,

  57. hopefully somewhere that me and my wife were quite content and happy to live.

  58. But for him, the picture was completely different.

  59. Stephen would be returning to a church in his home country,

  60. a church that wasn't permitted,

  61. that was not approved of by the state.

  62. And even as he studied,

  63. there was a perennial threat that his visa might be taken away from him,

  64. or that he might have his passport removed,

  65. or that the mechanisms of citizenship and immigration

  66. might be manipulated to separate him from his wife and his young baby daughter.

  67. The church that he'd grown up in,

  68. and the church he was likely to serve,

  69. often had to meet at strange hours in the day.

  70. They had to split into smaller groups and meet at homes.

  71. Day and night, he had to publish and circulate Christian books in secret.

  72. Plenty of common round.

  73. But a radically different outlook.

  74. And I left his flat feeling really full.

  75. I had no idea what I'd eaten.

  76. But I also felt greatly humbled.

  77. Because here was a friend,

  78. someone who was following the same Lord,

  79. someone who was preaching the same words.

  80. And yet, our expectations of what the Christian life was going to look like

  81. were pulls apart.

  82. And at first glance,

  83. as we think of those three verses that were read aloud,

  84. we can see how perhaps the words speak more directly to Stephen's situation than to mine.

  85. Or we might imagine that they say more to the church in, say, Pakistan or Syria,

  86. or perhaps in Turkey,

  87. than it does in Brunsfield.

  88. But by the grace of God,

  89. these words from Jesus to this suffering church in Smyrna

  90. do have something to say to us.

  91. And it says something loud and clear

  92. to each one of us

  93. who follows Jesus

  94. and calls him Lord.

  95. Now, before we get into that,

  96. I'm conscious that lots of people

  97. have been coming and going from holidays.

  98. There might be visitors here,

  99. and this is there being thrown straight into this series.

  100. So let me set the scene as we find it

  101. in the book of Revelation.

  102. This is the second, as I've said, of seven letters.

  103. And these letters are being written down,

  104. recorded by John.

  105. And John is looking

  106. from this rocky little island

  107. of Patmos to the mainland.

  108. And in a great vision,

  109. he sees the church

  110. in all its diversity

  111. and yet its unity in Christ.

  112. in the whole sweep of history.

  113. And he looks out on this great vision

  114. and he is confronted by a vision,

  115. a vision we read of in chapter one

  116. of seven lampstands.

  117. And it's explained that these seven lampstands

  118. are seven churches.

  119. And there amid the lampstands,

  120. we find Jesus.

  121. And just as Jesus promised his disciples

  122. in that great verse in the Great Commission,

  123. surely I will be with you always

  124. to the very end of the age.

  125. Jesus is there.

  126. He is present among the churches,

  127. walking among the lampstands.

  128. And he is tending to them.

  129. He is speaking to them.

  130. He is warning them,

  131. encouraging them,

  132. teaching them.

  133. He has rebukes for them,

  134. harsh words.

  135. And when we look around the church

  136. as we find it in Edinburgh

  137. and in Scotland,

  138. which is so often declining,

  139. so often discouraged,

  140. so often irrelevant,

  141. we need very little persuasion

  142. that we need to take seriously

  143. what Jesus has to say

  144. as he walks among the churches.

  145. And Jesus knows the churches intimately.

  146. If we imagine a tennis coach

  147. watching Andy Murray,

  148. he's not just interested in the scoreline,

  149. he's watching the angle of his elbow.

  150. He's watching the way he moves his feet,

  151. every last serve, volley, chip, serve,

  152. just to make these minute adjustments.

  153. And Jesus knows these churches

  154. as he walks among them.

  155. He knows every facet of their lives.

  156. He knows their faith,

  157. their doubts,

  158. their joys,

  159. their pain,

  160. every small detail

  161. of their circumstance,

  162. the opportunities they face,

  163. and also the opposition.

  164. And Christ speaks to these churches

  165. that he knows so well

  166. with penetrating insights.

  167. There are no platitudes here.

  168. We see in practice

  169. what the writer to the Hebrews describes

  170. in that famous verse in chapter four.

  171. The word of God is living and active,

  172. sharper than any double-edged sword,

  173. penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,

  174. joints and marrow.

  175. It judges the thoughts

  176. and attitudes of the heart.

  177. And so Christ speaks pointedly

  178. with purpose and power

  179. to the seven churches,

  180. and he speaks to us today.

  181. Last week, we looked at the church in Ephesus,

  182. and we found a church

  183. that had so much going for it,

  184. so many plus points,

  185. praiseworthy deeds,

  186. hard work,

  187. sweat,

  188. perseverance,

  189. sound teaching,

  190. but

  191. in the final analysis,

  192. for all its activity and endeavor,

  193. it had forgotten

  194. its first love.

  195. And if that letter emphasized

  196. that love

  197. is a key mark

  198. of the Christian church,

  199. the letter to Smyrna

  200. focuses on something else,

  201. a second key mark,

  202. suffering.

  203. And this leap

  204. from love to suffering

  205. might jar us at first,

  206. but when we think about it,

  207. we can see how the two

  208. are immediately intertwined.

  209. We think of a parent's

  210. sacrificial love

  211. for their child.

  212. We think of the patriot

  213. who will,

  214. at great cost,

  215. fight for their country.

  216. Or the sports fan,

  217. especially the Scotland sports fan,

  218. who knows nothing

  219. but hurt and disappointment

  220. in their love and pride

  221. for their country.

  222. Or again,

  223. the married couple

  224. who,

  225. with great forbearance

  226. and love and care,

  227. think back to their wedding vows

  228. for richer,

  229. for poorer,

  230. in sickness and in health,

  231. unto death us do part.

  232. And they mean it.

  233. And they mean it

  234. when the money runs out.

  235. And they mean it

  236. when one of them

  237. falls desperately ill.

  238. And despite what

  239. our popular culture

  240. might suggest,

  241. you're actually more likely

  242. to find real love

  243. by a hospital bed

  244. or at a graveside

  245. than you are

  246. in a fancy restaurant

  247. at a candlelit table

  248. for two.

  249. Real love

  250. is not cheap.

  251. It's costly.

  252. And it's prepared

  253. to suffer.

  254. And we see

  255. this kind

  256. of suffering love

  257. right through

  258. the history

  259. of the church.

  260. There is the Christian's

  261. love for their saviour,

  262. a commitment

  263. that is confessed

  264. and lived out

  265. even under the threat

  266. of radical

  267. and brutal

  268. persecution.

  269. We prayed

  270. for some of these situations

  271. just a few moments ago.

  272. Situations we find today

  273. in our world.

  274. And here in Smyrna,

  275. in the letter

  276. we're looking at,

  277. we find a church

  278. who is under

  279. extreme pressure,

  280. beset with difficulties

  281. opposition

  282. and bleak,

  283. draining,

  284. exhausting

  285. poverty.

  286. And while the church

  287. was struggling,

  288. it found itself

  289. surrounded by a city

  290. that was thriving,

  291. bustling with

  292. commercial activity,

  293. great,

  294. impressive

  295. architecture,

  296. culture,

  297. prosperity,

  298. learning,

  299. and a great

  300. religious centre

  301. for pagan worship

  302. and for worshipping

  303. the name

  304. of the emperor.

  305. and we have

  306. the church

  307. moving in a totally

  308. different direction

  309. from the society.

  310. One is affluent

  311. and upwardly mobile.

  312. The other

  313. is small

  314. and squashed.

  315. And Christ

  316. is perfectly clear.

  317. He doesn't try

  318. and brush it

  319. under the carpet.

  320. He says in verse 9,

  321. I know

  322. your afflictions

  323. and your poverty.

  324. they're being

  325. squeezed

  326. from all sides

  327. and it hurts.

  328. It really hurts

  329. and there are no

  330. hidden reserves,

  331. there are no

  332. obvious moment

  333. of respite,

  334. there is no

  335. material security

  336. for them,

  337. there is no

  338. cheap get out

  339. of jail card

  340. free.

  341. But then

  342. the picture

  343. is fleshed

  344. out a little

  345. in the second

  346. half of verse 9

  347. we read of one

  348. strand of the

  349. opposition,

  350. one source

  351. of these

  352. difficulties.

  353. The Jews,

  354. a group who

  355. had sought

  356. it seems

  357. to discredit

  358. and disparage

  359. the Christians.

  360. And we read

  361. a phrase

  362. that may seem

  363. quite troublesome

  364. to us.

  365. I know

  366. the slander

  367. of those

  368. who say

  369. they are

  370. Jews

  371. and are

  372. not,

  373. but are

  374. a synagogue

  375. of Satan.

  376. Now this is

  377. strong language,

  378. perhaps an

  379. offence to

  380. our modern

  381. sensibilities.

  382. One suspects

  383. it would be

  384. immediately

  385. censored

  386. in our age

  387. of political

  388. correctness.

  389. But it is

  390. careful that we

  391. are honest

  392. about what's

  393. being said

  394. here and we

  395. tease out

  396. exactly

  397. what is

  398. meant.

  399. We need

  400. to consider

  401. the background.

  402. Now the very

  403. first Christians

  404. were of course

  405. very Jewish.

  406. Jesus was a Jew,

  407. Paul was a Jew,

  408. Peter was a Jew,

  409. and they clung

  410. to the Jewish

  411. hope.

  412. They studied

  413. the ancient

  414. Jewish scriptures,

  415. our Old Testament.

  416. They worshipped

  417. Jesus Christ,

  418. seeing him

  419. as the fulfillment

  420. of the promises

  421. that had been

  422. offered.

  423. Many were

  424. Jewish

  425. converts.

  426. Yet nonetheless

  427. we see

  428. in many occasions,

  429. we see this right

  430. through the book

  431. of Acts,

  432. the early church,

  433. the first Christians

  434. found themselves

  435. coming into a

  436. clash with the

  437. established Jewish

  438. authorities and

  439. communities.

  440. And in a church

  441. like Smyrna,

  442. the fledgling church

  443. would contain a mix

  444. of Jews and

  445. non-Jews.

  446. And then of course

  447. there'd be the Jewish

  448. community itself,

  449. well established,

  450. flourishing,

  451. considerable in size,

  452. quite influential

  453. in the city.

  454. but they did not

  455. share the belief

  456. that Jesus

  457. was Lord.

  458. And they did not

  459. share the belief

  460. that Jesus

  461. was Messiah.

  462. And some of the Jews

  463. rejected this belief

  464. and they slandered

  465. those who would

  466. follow Jesus

  467. and call him

  468. and worship

  469. him as Lord.

  470. And so cracks

  471. began to appear

  472. in a community

  473. that once seemed

  474. to be more

  475. blended together.

  476. And the Christians,

  477. they didn't see

  478. their faith,

  479. as I've said,

  480. they didn't see

  481. it as something new,

  482. as some novelty

  483. invented out of nowhere.

  484. But quite simply

  485. it was impossible

  486. within the Jewish

  487. Christian community

  488. to affirm on one hand

  489. that Jesus is Lord

  490. and on the other

  491. that he isn't.

  492. Therefore the question

  493. became who is

  494. a true Jew?

  495. Who is true

  496. to all these promises

  497. that were given

  498. in the scriptures

  499. in the Old Testament?

  500. Was it those

  501. who are worshipping

  502. Jesus?

  503. Or is it those

  504. who reject him

  505. as a dangerous

  506. novelty?

  507. It's a difficult

  508. question.

  509. One answer is given

  510. in a way by Paul

  511. in Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  512. and where he says

  513. that a Jew,

  514. the one who is a Jew,

  515. is that one who

  516. has the spirit

  517. at work in their heart,

  518. not merely someone

  519. who's got the external

  520. image and appearance

  521. of a Jew

  522. where it's on the outside.

  523. It's about the heart.

  524. And with this perspective

  525. we can understand

  526. Christ's verdict

  527. in this letter

  528. in these harsh words

  529. that the Jews

  530. in Swerna

  531. have become

  532. a synagogue

  533. of Satan.

  534. It's not a vague slur.

  535. It's not a racial

  536. hate crime.

  537. It's not mudslinging.

  538. The Satan,

  539. literally,

  540. the accuser.

  541. And this community

  542. have been launching

  543. accusations

  544. against the Christians,

  545. slandering them

  546. and distancing them

  547. from the synagogue.

  548. Now,

  549. for us,

  550. in our own small ways,

  551. we perhaps know

  552. that experience

  553. of being excluded,

  554. of being pushed

  555. out of a group.

  556. To think with regret

  557. and sorrow,

  558. I actually used

  559. to fit in here,

  560. but now I'm not welcome.

  561. To be ostracized,

  562. no longer part of the club,

  563. the team,

  564. and in some sad situations,

  565. no longer part

  566. of the family.

  567. To have your bridges

  568. utterly burnt.

  569. But for the church

  570. in Smyrna,

  571. there were immediate

  572. practical

  573. and particular

  574. consequences

  575. because the Jews

  576. were in an unusual

  577. position in that

  578. they had established

  579. certain privileges.

  580. They weren't expected

  581. to participate

  582. in the same way

  583. with all that was

  584. going on in the rest

  585. of the city,

  586. this worship

  587. that was focused

  588. on a man,

  589. focused on the emperor.

  590. And whereas initially,

  591. from the point of view

  592. of everyone else,

  593. the Christians were

  594. indistinguishable

  595. from the Jews

  596. and therefore had

  597. the same privileges,

  598. suddenly those privileges

  599. were stripped away.

  600. And the expectation

  601. came to the Christian,

  602. you should be participating

  603. like everyone else.

  604. Why can't you?

  605. And it was clear

  606. that the Christians

  607. were caught between

  608. a rock and a hard place,

  609. ostracized from the Jews

  610. who had thrown them out

  611. and ostracized

  612. from the society

  613. that wanted them

  614. to worship a man God.

  615. And so,

  616. in the midst of a city

  617. that is booming,

  618. that is prosperous,

  619. that is on the up,

  620. we have this dismal picture

  621. of a church

  622. that is poor

  623. and persecuted,

  624. suffering because

  625. they would not betray

  626. the Lord they love.

  627. So we have this rich

  628. and full picture

  629. of Smyrna,

  630. Smyrna,

  631. the suffering church,

  632. and for many Christians

  633. through history

  634. and around the world today,

  635. Smyrna's story

  636. is their story

  637. and it's a difficult story

  638. and in some measure

  639. it may be

  640. or have been

  641. or perhaps will be

  642. in the future

  643. our experience as well.

  644. By the grace of God,

  645. I know in my experience

  646. I've been spared

  647. any threat

  648. of physical violence

  649. for my faith.

  650. but perhaps you have

  651. or you know

  652. the bitter taste

  653. of an unjust insult

  654. or you've endured

  655. that snub

  656. or exclusion

  657. being overlooked

  658. or you find yourself

  659. or your church

  660. or the Bible

  661. ridiculed,

  662. overlooked,

  663. caricatured,

  664. presented in a straw man

  665. argument

  666. or perhaps you've been

  667. the young student

  668. who goes to join

  669. the university rugby team

  670. and they're told

  671. they can only take part

  672. if they take part

  673. in some ritual

  674. that would utterly

  675. shame the name of Jesus

  676. and probably play havoc

  677. with their digestive system.

  678. But that's beside the point.

  679. Or the individual

  680. who stands

  681. and they're trying

  682. to have a serious conversation

  683. and they're told

  684. plainly to their faith

  685. that they've committed

  686. intellectual suicide,

  687. that their faith

  688. is a crutch,

  689. that they're intolerant

  690. or arrogant

  691. or manipulative

  692. or bigoted

  693. or simply naive.

  694. The slander comes

  695. and difficulties follow.

  696. And it is inevitable

  697. because the church,

  698. the church is in the world.

  699. It is rooted

  700. in the unfolding of history

  701. and in culture

  702. and all that's going on.

  703. But it is committed

  704. to the lordship

  705. of Jesus Christ.

  706. It has a firm allegiance.

  707. And to the world,

  708. this allegiance

  709. which is outside the world

  710. is a disturbing fact.

  711. And the church is therefore

  712. a problematic presence.

  713. And the world around us

  714. may perhaps only raise

  715. an eyebrow in derision

  716. at the Christian

  717. who calls Jesus their friend

  718. or their savior.

  719. But when the church

  720. takes a stand

  721. and says,

  722. Jesus is not just my friend.

  723. Jesus is lord

  724. and Jesus is king.

  725. And when the church

  726. proclaims that there is

  727. an authority

  728. in Jesus Christ

  729. that does not follow

  730. under the authority

  731. of me, myself, and I

  732. and my own preferences.

  733. That proclaims an authority

  734. that does not fall

  735. under the majority rule.

  736. That proclaims an authority

  737. that doesn't get swept aside

  738. by someone

  739. because they're wealthy

  740. or healthy

  741. or educated.

  742. An authority

  743. that does not fall

  744. under

  745. the all-consuming power

  746. of human reason

  747. as it often appears today.

  748. When the church

  749. proclaims that kind

  750. of authority,

  751. when it calls Jesus

  752. lord and king,

  753. it will be met

  754. not with a raised eyebrow

  755. but with a clenched fist.

  756. this is Smyrna's situation.

  757. This may be

  758. our situation.

  759. And we need to listen

  760. carefully to what Christ

  761. says to this suffering church.

  762. To begin with,

  763. he does not waste words

  764. explaining the suffering.

  765. Nor does he promise

  766. a quick removal

  767. of the suffering.

  768. Though he does hint

  769. that they may well be,

  770. in fact they will be,

  771. delivered through it,

  772. he says,

  773. do not be afraid.

  774. But even as he

  775. invites them

  776. to have courage

  777. and not to fear

  778. what is happening,

  779. he offers another warning.

  780. There is more suffering

  781. to come.

  782. In verse 10,

  783. we see what they are

  784. to expect.

  785. Prison.

  786. You may lose

  787. your freedom.

  788. Persecution.

  789. You may lose

  790. your security

  791. and peace.

  792. Death.

  793. You may even

  794. lose your life.

  795. What then are we

  796. to make of this

  797. marginalized

  798. and downtrodden church?

  799. How are they

  800. in their own minds,

  801. in their own faith,

  802. supposed to match up

  803. a God of love

  804. and grace

  805. with their present

  806. afflictions?

  807. I wonder if you've

  808. spent time

  809. reading through

  810. the Psalms.

  811. I wonder if you've

  812. read Psalm 73.

  813. It's a kind of

  814. wrestling psalm

  815. where the psalmist

  816. is taking hold

  817. of God

  818. and saying,

  819. what's going on here?

  820. You might want

  821. to turn to it now,

  822. Psalm 73.

  823. I'm just going

  824. to pick out

  825. a few phrases.

  826. It starts like this.

  827. Surely,

  828. God is good

  829. to Israel.

  830. Surely,

  831. there is an

  832. expectation.

  833. And yet,

  834. as the psalm

  835. unfolds,

  836. it is clear

  837. that this

  838. confession,

  839. this belief,

  840. is held

  841. despite circumstances,

  842. despite disappointment.

  843. Verses 2-4.

  844. As for me,

  845. my feet

  846. had almost slipped.

  847. I had nearly

  848. lost my foothold.

  849. I envied the arrogant

  850. when I saw

  851. the prosperity

  852. of the wicked.

  853. Upwardly mobile

  854. Smyrna.

  855. They have no

  856. struggles.

  857. Their bodies

  858. are healthy

  859. and strong.

  860. And we see

  861. this perspective

  862. in the suffering

  863. church

  864. in an affluent

  865. world.

  866. There is the church

  867. feeling like

  868. the ground

  869. is being ripped

  870. from under them.

  871. And then there are

  872. others who seem

  873. so prosperous

  874. and happy.

  875. And then in verse 13,

  876. this grim question.

  877. Surely,

  878. in vain,

  879. I've kept

  880. my heart pure

  881. and have washed

  882. my hands

  883. in innocence.

  884. And perhaps

  885. this is the question

  886. for Smyrna.

  887. Is there poverty

  888. in vain?

  889. Is there faithfulness

  890. in the midst

  891. of suffering

  892. and afflictions?

  893. Is this all

  894. for nothing?

  895. You need to listen

  896. to what Christ

  897. is saying

  898. to the church.

  899. And the answer

  900. is surely

  901. no

  902. and no

  903. again.

  904. Because where

  905. the world sees

  906. and where we

  907. with worldly eyes

  908. see poverty

  909. and lack

  910. and disappointment,

  911. Christ sees

  912. great riches.

  913. For what Christ

  914. is measuring

  915. is not

  916. temporal prosperity

  917. or influence

  918. or position

  919. which is here

  920. today and gone

  921. tomorrow,

  922. the rise and fall

  923. and the rich and famous.

  924. He is looking

  925. at spiritual riches

  926. that do not perish,

  927. that will not spoil

  928. or fade away.

  929. And so we have

  930. a paradox

  931. that is at the heart

  932. of the Christian church

  933. wherever it is found

  934. that the true riches

  935. of the church

  936. are found

  937. in poverty.

  938. This is something

  939. Christ taught.

  940. We could read the Beatitudes

  941. in Luke 6.

  942. Blessed

  943. are the poor,

  944. the hungry,

  945. the mourning,

  946. the weeping

  947. and the excluded.

  948. And Jesus,

  949. of course,

  950. lived it

  951. and died it.

  952. Paul puts it

  953. in his second letter

  954. to the Corinthians

  955. in chapter 8,

  956. verse 9.

  957. As he seeks

  958. to encourage a church,

  959. he points

  960. to the grace

  961. of Christ

  962. who,

  963. though he was rich,

  964. yet for your sakes

  965. became poor

  966. so that through

  967. his poverty

  968. might become

  969. rich.

  970. And so Christ

  971. says to the church,

  972. I know you.

  973. I know your poverty

  974. and your struggles.

  975. I know them

  976. because I've lived them

  977. and I died them

  978. and I tell you

  979. that you are rich

  980. in God's economy.

  981. And he says to them

  982. to be faithful,

  983. to not be afraid,

  984. even in the midst

  985. of their suffering.

  986. Yes,

  987. the world sees something

  988. that is broken

  989. and brittle

  990. and fragile,

  991. and Christ

  992. is not going to promise

  993. a consolation prize,

  994. but rather he

  995. fortifies them

  996. for this struggle,

  997. the struggle that will

  998. continue for some time

  999. and he promises them

  1000. the most wonderful prize.

  1001. Drawing on the image

  1002. of this city

1003. that had a great stadium

  1004. in the center

1005. and had a great taste

  1006. for pageantry

  1007. and occasion,

  1008. he promises them

  1009. something

  1010. like an Olympic medal

  1011. except it's a wreath.

  1012. It's bestowed

  1013. on the head

  1014. of a champion.

  1015. Christ calls it

  1016. a crown

  1017. and it's a crown

1018. that is not for the athlete

  1019. or the scholar

  1020. or the powerful ruler,

1021. but it is a crown

  1022. for the powerless,

  1023. the penniless,

  1024. irrelevant church,

  1025. the church

  1026. that will remain faithful,

  1027. clinging on,

  1028. even unto death.

  1029. It's a great prize

  1030. and it's a wonderful promise

  1031. that in faithful suffering

  1032. comes great blessing

1033. and this is the promise

1034. of the one who walks

  1035. among the lampstands,

1036. the one who is first

  1037. and who is last,

  1038. who outlives

  1039. and outstretches

  1040. every empire

  1041. and overrules

  1042. every emperor,

  1043. one who endured

  1044. the quiet abandonment

  1045. and anxiety

  1046. of Gethsemane

  1047. and the public horror

  1048. of Golgotha,

  1049. who knows

  1050. spiritual emptiness,

  1051. abandonment,

  1052. injustice,

  1053. mockery,

  1054. violence

  1055. and death,

  1056. one who introduces himself

  1057. as one who died

  1058. and rose again.

  1059. This is the one

  1060. who promises the crown,

1061. who holds out the prize.

  1062. This is the one

  1063. who is sovereign

  1064. even in the midst

  1065. of persecution.

  1066. And yes,

  1067. persecution is coming

  1068. from this church.

1069. It speaks of 10 days,

  1070. not 240 hours,

  1071. but a finite time.

  1072. A finite time

  1073. known by one

1074. who is first and last,

1075. who knows all our ends

  1076. from the very beginning,

  1077. our Lord

  1078. and our Savior.

  1079. Let me finish

  1080. with a story,

  1081. a story from history,

  1082. a story from Smyrna,

  1083. the story of Polycarp,

1084. who was one of the great

  1085. early Christian leaders.

  1086. He met John,

  1087. who wrote Revelation,

  1088. in his childhood,

  1089. and he died

1090. on the 23rd of February,

  1091. 155 AD.

1092. And this is his story.

  1093. Polycarp refused

  1094. to take part

  1095. in a simple ritual.

  1096. There was nothing

  1097. especially drizzly about it.

  1098. Just sprinkle

  1099. some powder,

  1100. some incense

  1101. and confess

  1102. that Caesar

  1103. is Lord.

  1104. A small compromise.

  1105. It wouldn't directly affect

  1106. the health and happiness

  1107. of anyone he knew

  1108. or cared about.

  1109. But he refused.

  1110. And he was arrested

1111. and brought into the stadium

  1112. where before the crowds

1113. and before the government official,

  1114. he was appealed to

  1115. to spare himself

  1116. the death penalty.

  1117. And he refused.

  1118. They said,

  1119. swear

1120. and I'll set you free.

  1121. Curse Christ.

  1122. That was the invitation.

  1123. And this old man

  1124. replied,

  1125. 80 and 6 years

  1126. I have served him

1127. and he never did me

  1128. any injury.

  1129. How then

  1130. can I blaspheme

  1131. my King

  1132. and Savior?

  1133. And that same day

  1134. this old man

  1135. of faith

  1136. was martyred.

  1137. And his faith

  1138. was in this

  1139. great King

1140. the one who is first

  1141. and is last

  1142. who died

1143. and came to life again

1144. who says to his disciples

  1145. on the cusp

  1146. of his great

  1147. hour of suffering

  1148. in this world

  1149. you will have

  1150. trouble

  1151. but take heart

  1152. I have overcome

  1153. the world.

  1154. we live

  1155. in a scary

  1156. and broken world.

  1157. This morning

  1158. the Home Secretary

  1159. announced

  1160. new funding

  1161. to protect

  1162. places of worship

1163. and the Church of Christ

  1164. in our world

  1165. is a suffering church

1166. but we're to take heart.

1167. He who has an ear

  1168. let him hear

  1169. what the Spirit says

  1170. to the churches.

  1171. Let us pray.

  1172. Lord our God

  1173. our King and Savior

  1174. we live our lives

  1175. here in this city

  1176. and in other places

1177. and it is our privilege

  1178. to know

  1179. and worship you.

  1180. And as we study

  1181. your word

  1182. this morning

  1183. we find it

  1184. widens our vision

  1185. and it reminds us

  1186. that at the heart

  1187. of our faith

  1188. is a suffering king

  1189. and that your church

  1190. is a suffering church.

  1191. Lord in our own

  1192. sufferings

  1193. help us to be

  1194. encouraged

  1195. to be faithful

  1196. to hold on

  1197. to the promises

1198. you hold out for us

  1199. and in our times

  1200. of peace

  1201. and prosperity

  1202. help us to pray

  1203. and to remember

  1204. and to honour

  1205. those who

  1206. the cost of following

  1207. you is not merely

  1208. inconvenience

  1209. but that costs them

  1210. their very last breath

  1211. and penny.

  1212. May they know

  1213. your comfort

  1214. may they hear

  1215. your voice

  1216. we pray.

  1217. Amen.
