  1. Thank you very much, Jamie and the band.

  2. And welcome, everyone.

  3. Let me add to Graham's welcome this morning.

  4. It's great to have you here.

  5. Why don't we pray?

  6. Father God, as we approach your word,

  7. will you open our hearts and minds

  8. to what you have to say to us?

  9. And Lord Jesus, as we think of you

  10. as the speaker to this church so long ago,

  11. will you give us a bigger view of who you are, Jesus?

  12. And let us listen to your voice to us today.

  13. Amen.

  14. So as Graham mentioned,

  15. we're continuing to look at these letters to the churches.

  16. You've got mail, we're halfway through,

  17. and we're looking at the message to the church in Thyatira.

  18. You'll find it in Revelation chapter 2 and verses 18 to 29.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  19. And if you can get hold of a Bible,

  20. please get hold of one or see it on your phone or whatever.

  21. Revelation 2, 18 to 29.

  22. Let's read it together now.

  23. To the angel of the church in Thyatira write,

  24. these are the words of the Son of God,

  25. whose eyes are like blazing fire

  26. and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

  27. I know your deeds,

  28. your love and faith,

  29. your service and perseverance,

  30. and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

  31. Nevertheless, I have this against you.

  32. You tolerate that woman Jezebel,

  33. who calls herself a prophet.

  34. By her teaching,

  35. she misleads my servants into sexual immorality

  36. and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.

  37. I have given her time to repent of her immorality,

  38. but she is unwilling.

  39. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering,

  40. and I will make those who commit adultery with her

  41. suffer intensely unless they repent of her ways.

  42. I will strike her children dead.

  43. Then all the churches will know

  44. that I am he who searches hearts and minds,

  45. and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

  46. Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira,

  47. to you who do not hold to her teaching

  48. and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets,

  49. I will not impose any other burden on you

  50. except to hold on to what you have until I come.

  51. To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end,

  52. I will give authority over the nations.

  53. That one will rule them with an iron scepter

  54. and will dash them to pieces like pottery,

  55. just as I have received authority from my Father.

  56. I will also give that one the morning star.

  57. Whoever has ears,

  58. let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  59. And it's been my prayer as I've read and prepared for this over recent days

  60. that quite simply God would have something to say to each of us.

  61. And that as that passage finishes by saying those who have ears,

  62. let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  63. So we would be discerning of what God

  64. and God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

  65. have to say to us this morning as individuals,

  66. perhaps as families and also as a church today.

  67. My title for Thyatira is that Thyatira is both committed and compromised.

  68. I wonder if it seems often that we would have to either be one or the other.

  69. And so either you'd be expecting to be hearing about those who are fully committed

  70. or those who are in some ways at compromise,

  71. those who are no longer following Jesus.

  72. But Thyatira is an interesting church

  73. because it seems that they are both committed to following Jesus,

  74. but they are also living in a way which for many of them amounts to compromise.

  75. And so that's my challenge.

  76. It's been a challenge to my own heart this week

  77. about whether it's quite possible for me as an individual

  78. and for us as a church not to desert the faith.

  79. That's not what this church had done.

  80. They were still carrying on.

  81. And at least superficially and externally,

  82. they appeared utterly committed.

  83. But yet the Spirit, Lord Jesus himself,

  84. speaks to that church and says,

  85. I commend you for your commitment,

  86. but I look and I also see real compromise.

  87. So we want to get into that.

  88. And in three very simple sections,

  89. I want to look first of all at the speaker

  90. because I think it's important that we try to understand more

  91. about who is speaking to this church

  92. and how he describes himself.

  93. I want to look at their situation

  94. and I want to look at the solution to that situation.

  95. So first of all, the speaker here.

  96. And my question as I've reflected on the speaker

  97. is whether my view of Jesus is far too small.

  98. And it's my question of you today as well.

  99. As you look at Revelation chapter 2

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  100. and look at this and look at how the speaker,

  101. Jesus himself, describes himself.

  102. I wonder if we've made our view of Jesus far too small.

  103. Let's look back to chapter 1 so we get the context.

  104. Chapter 1, we also have a revelation of Jesus.

  105. Verse 5, Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness,

  106. the firstborn from the dead

  107. and the ruler of the kings of the earth,

  108. to him who loves us

  109. and has freed us from our sins by his blood

  110. and has made us to be a kingdom and priest

  111. to serve his God and Father,

  112. to him be glory and power forever and ever.

  113. Amen.

  114. So there's that revelation of Jesus

  115. as he's described as the faithful witness,

  116. the firstborn from the dead,

  117. the ruler of the kings of the earth,

  118. and crucially as he's described as him who loves us

  119. and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

  120. I want us to take a few minutes

  121. to recapture perhaps for some of us

  122. a real picture of who Jesus is

  123. as the speaker here this morning.

  124. He is the one who loves us

  125. and if we're following him,

  126. he is the one who has freed us from our sins

  127. by his blood.

  128. But specifically, what aspects of his person

  129. does he emphasize to the church at Thyatira?

  130. Well, look at chapter 2, verse 18.

  131. He says,

  132. The words of the Son of God,

  133. whose eyes are like blazing fire.

  134. So we hear about his eyes,

  135. whose feet are like burnished bronze.

  136. Still in verse 18.

  137. Verse 19,

  138. I know your deeds,

  139. your love and faith,

  140. your service and perseverance.

  141. So we know about his,

  142. we hear about his mind,

  143. his knowledge,

  144. not only his eyes,

  145. not only his feet,

  146. but also his knowledge,

  147. his mind.

  148. I know your deeds.

  149. And then we hear more about who he is

  150. and what he's doing.

  151. And when we look on to verse 23,

  152. where he says,

  153. I am he who searches hearts and minds.

  154. So something there about his eyes,

  155. something about his feet,

  156. something about his mind,

  157. and something about his activity

  158. as he searches hearts and minds.

  159. I wonder if we've grasped

  160. and continue to grasp

  161. that Jesus sees us,

  162. knows us,

  163. he sees us,

  164. he knows us.

  165. Do we,

  166. it seems such a basic truth,

  167. doesn't it?

  168. It's,

  169. and maybe,

  170. maybe you've got a greater awareness of it

  171. than I have,

  172. but I've just reminded myself

  173. as I've looked at this passage time and again,

  174. Jesus,

  175. you're the one who sees me

  176. and who knows me.

  177. I wonder if we look at our own limited vision

  178. and our own eyes

  179. and how little we can see.

  180. Most of us can see around

  181. everybody who's in the room,

  182. but we certainly can't see what's going on

  183. in the houses across the road even.

  184. And our vision is so,

  185. so limited as human beings

  186. that does that in some way

  187. cause us to have a limited sense

  188. of what it means

  189. when Jesus says,

  190. I see you

  191. and I know you.

  192. Have some of you been to see

  193. the great new film,

  194. Finding Dory,

  195. yet?

  196. I'm not seeing a sea of hands.

  197. Some of you have been,

  198. I'm glad to see,

  199. one or two of you have been to Finding Dory.

  200. Well,

  201. I apologise if any of you

  202. are marine scientists here today.

  203. I'm not,

  204. but I learned something

  205. about the ability of whales

  206. from watching the film,

  207. Finding Dory,

  208. because it tells us

  209. quite a bit about echolocation

  210. and the fact that whales

  211. have got skills

  212. to sense what is going on,

  213. potentially miles away in the ocean,

  214. much greater skills

  215. than we would have on earth

  216. or if we were in the sea.

  217. And according to Finding Dory,

  218. and I'm sure the very accurate science

  219. portrayed therein,

  220. those whales can detect

  221. even the slightest movement

  222. miles away in the ocean,

  223. thanks to that great ability

  224. they have of echolocation.

  225. Or think about eyes

  226. of some of the animals.

  227. Think about the eyes of a hawk,

  228. which I understand

  229. flying at 1,500 feet

  230. could detect a rat or a mouse

  231. down on the ground

  232. and could swoop down

  233. at 100 miles an hour,

  234. maintaining its focus

  235. on that rat the whole way

  236. in order to grasp it

  237. and have it for supper.

  238. So even in the animal kingdom,

  239. there are animals,

  240. creatures of our God

  241. which have got abilities

  242. to see and to sense

  243. way, way, way greater

  244. than ours can ever be.

  245. And why is it then

  246. that I suppose we sometimes

  247. have got such a limited,

  248. narrow view of Jesus,

  249. somehow or other,

  250. making him in our own image

  251. and thinking that we can live life

  252. in some ways away from his gates?

  253. Because I suspect

  254. if you're anything like me,

  255. that's how we sometimes

  256. seem to act.

  257. Jesus says,

  258. he sees us

  259. and he knows us.

  260. Of course,

  261. our knowledge

  262. and our sight

  263. is so imperfect,

  264. not just physically,

  265. but in terms of our ability

  266. to discern

  267. what is right,

  268. in terms of our ability

  269. to work out

  270. how we should live,

  271. in terms of our ability

  272. to make good judgments.

  273. We read about that

  274. in 1 Corinthians chapter 13

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  275. where we read that

  276. now we see

  277. only a reflection

  278. as in a mirror,

  279. then we shall see

  280. face to face.

  281. Now I know

  282. only in part,

  283. then I shall know fully

  284. even as I am fully known.

  285. And perhaps this morning

  286. we can come to Jesus

  287. and can acknowledge

  288. his perfect sight

  289. and perfect knowledge

  290. and acknowledge

  291. our great imperfections

  292. and therefore

  293. our utter dependence

  294. on him

  295. for him to guide us,

  296. for him to lead us,

  297. for him to show us

  298. how to live.

  299. I've been particularly struck

  300. by the need for that

  301. as I've done a bit of reading

  302. this week

  303. into the views of

  304. those who claim

  305. to follow Jesus

  306. in America

  307. and who are pronouncing

  308. somewhat diametrically

  309. opposed views

  310. on who

  311. the US

  312. country,

  313. the country of US

  314. should vote for

  315. come the US election.

  316. Isn't it remarkable

  317. that you can read

  318. impassioned,

  319. in some ways

  320. well argued

  321. and thought out

  322. arguments

  323. from Christians

  324. as to why

  325. it's absolutely

  326. essential

  327. that you vote

  328. for Trump

  329. or why voting

  330. for Trump

  331. would be an

  332. absolutely heretical

  333. thing to do

  334. and certainly

  335. I've read both of them

  336. and thought

  337. yep you've got some

  338. quite strong arguments

  339. both ways.

  340. I'm happy to discuss

  341. later which ones

  342. I found the most compelling

  343. but certainly

  344. it's just brought home

  345. to me again

  346. our incredibly

  347. limited sight,

  348. our incredibly

  349. limited vision

  350. and I trust

  351. causes us

  352. to turn all the more

  353. to Jesus

  354. as the only one

  355. who sees

  356. and knows

  357. and searches

  358. our hearts

  359. and minds.

  360. Will we invite him

  361. this morning

  362. to say Jesus

  363. I'm glad that you see me

  364. I'm glad that you know me

  365. I'm glad that despite

  366. all that you see

  367. you love me

  368. I'm glad

  369. that you have

  370. freed me

  371. and forgive me

  372. from my sins

  373. through your blood

  374. and I invite you now

  375. to search me

  376. to know me

  377. to try me

  378. and see

  379. and to work

  380. in my life

  381. and to conform me

  382. more to your image.

  383. I pray that that might

  384. be our attitude

  385. to the great Lord

  386. Jesus Christ

  387. this morning.

  388. So he sees

  389. he knows

  390. and he looks at this

  391. church in Thyatira

  392. with his eyes

  393. of blazing fire

  394. with his feet

  395. of burnished bronze

  396. speaking I think

  397. of his strength

  398. and his control

  399. and says

  400. I've got some really

  401. some really great words

  402. of commendation

  403. for you

  404. I know your deeds

  405. your love

  406. your faith

  407. your service

  408. your perseverance

  409. and that you're doing

  410. more than you did

  411. at first

  412. those hearing it

  413. must have been thinking

  414. this is fantastic

  415. Jesus is looking at us

  416. with his perfect vision

  417. and he's seeing

  418. all of this great stuff

  419. that we're doing

  420. now Jesus is seeing us

  421. today as well

  422. and I'm sure

  423. as he looks down

  424. on this

  425. gathering of

  426. followers of Jesus

  427. all in different

  428. situations

  429. he looks

  430. and maybe

  431. for some

  432. the word

  433. to you

  434. today

  435. is simply

  436. that Jesus

  437. sees

  438. your perseverance

  439. maybe it's just

  440. that Jesus

  441. sees the fact

  442. that you're still

  443. clinging on

  444. and he wants

  445. to commend you

  446. for still

  447. hanging on

  448. I see

  449. your perseverance

  450. I see the difficulties

  451. that you've been

  452. subjected to

  453. I know

  454. intimately

  455. all about the

  456. difficulties

  457. of your

  458. family life

  459. about all

  460. that's going

  461. on in your

  462. work

  463. about all

  464. that's going

  465. on in your

  466. own heart

  467. about your

  468. ill health

  469. about financial

  470. worries

  471. and you're

  472. persevering

  473. you've chosen

  474. to come here

  475. today

  476. once again

  477. to meet

  478. with God's

  479. people

  480. you're not

  481. giving up

  482. you're

  483. hanging on

  484. I see it

  485. and I commend

  486. you for your

  487. perseverance

  488. take that word

  489. of encouragement

  490. if that's for you

  491. this morning

  492. maybe for others

  493. you've done

  494. more than

  495. persevere

  496. maybe your

  497. life this week

  498. has been full

  499. of deeds

  500. love

  501. faith

  502. and service

  503. in which case

  504. Jesus sees it

  505. and he knows it

  506. maybe some of you

  507. are gearing up

  508. for a busy

  509. busy week

  510. with the holiday

  511. club at Brunsfield

  512. and again a word

  513. of encouragement

  514. for you

  515. Jesus sees

  516. what you're doing

  517. he sees

  518. and appreciates

  519. your love

  520. your faith

  521. your deeds

  522. and your perseverance

  523. and he assures you

  524. this morning

  525. no matter what may

  526. happen

  527. no matter what

  528. physical

  529. or immediate

  530. results you may

  531. see from that

  532. holiday club

  533. he assures you

  534. through his word

  535. 1 Corinthians 15

  536. 58

  537. let nothing

  538. move you

  539. give yourselves

  540. fully to the work

  541. of the Lord

  542. because your labour

  543. in the Lord

  544. is not

  545. in vain

  546. it's never in vain

  547. it's never wasted

  548. you're never laboring

  549. for the Lord

  550. for no reward

  551. or for no reason

  552. it's not

  553. in vain

  554. so folks

  555. those of you

  556. the great team

  557. that will be

  558. assembling this week

  559. throw yourselves

  560. wholeheartedly

  561. into that work

  562. not serving the kids

  563. first and foremost

  564. but serving the Lord

  565. knowing

  566. knowing for sure

  567. that it is not

  568. in vain

  569. so that's the situation

  570. that we see

  571. in Thyatira

  572. but of course

  573. there is a very big

  574. but coming

  575. in terms of what

  576. Jesus sees

  577. and verse 20

  578. says

  579. nevertheless I have

  580. this against you

  581. you tolerate

  582. that woman

  583. Jezebel

  584. who is not

  585. leading

  586. she is

  587. misleading

  588. and we see here

  589. a real challenge

  590. about those who are

  591. not leading

  592. effectively

  593. but who are

  594. misleading

  595. so what's going on

  596. here

  597. what's going on

  598. in this church

  599. at face value

  600. all that we're told

  601. is that a woman

  602. Jezebel

  603. has come into the church

  604. she's calling herself

  605. a prophet

  606. and she's misleading

  607. servants

  608. into sexual immorality

  609. and the eating of food

  610. sacrificed to idols

  611. she's been given

  612. time to repent

  613. she's unwilling

  614. and she's about to be

  615. cast on a bed of suffering

  616. and those committing

  617. adultery with her

  618. are also going to

  619. suffer intensely

  620. we need to understand

  621. a little bit more

  622. about the context

  623. I think

  624. to fully

  625. get to grips

  626. with what's going on

  627. here

  628. so first of all

  629. Jezebel

  630. rings bells

  631. I'm sure

  632. for many

  633. Jezebel

  634. was the wife

  635. of Ahab

  636. we read about her

  637. in 1 Kings

  638. one of the most

  639. wicked women

  640. who had ever lived

  641. and she was a woman

  642. who not only

  643. terrorised the prophet

  644. Elijah

  645. you remember

  646. after his great victory

  647. in Mount Carmel

  648. Jezebel was the one

  649. who got a message

  650. to Elijah

  651. to say

  652. I'm going to have you dead

  653. and we saw Elijah

  654. running for his life

  655. a trembling wreck

  656. thanks to the power

  657. and fear

  658. that Jezebel

  659. could conjure up

  660. but particularly

  661. interestingly

  662. is that Jezebel

  663. it seems

  664. from what we read

  665. in 1 Kings

  666. didn't necessarily

  667. say to the Jews

  668. you must stop

  669. worshipping your God

  670. no no

  671. it's okay

  672. you can continue

  673. worshipping your God

  674. but also

  675. here's a whole heap

  676. of idols

  677. the prophets

  678. the Baals

  679. you should worship

  680. them too

  681. and so she introduced

  682. idolatrous

  683. worshipping

  684. worshipping practices

  685. to the people of God

  686. and we read about

  687. the hundreds of Baals

  688. and idols

  689. that she introduced

  690. and so I'm not sure

  691. there necessarily was

  692. a literal Jezebel

  693. maybe that was

  694. or was not

  695. the name of those

  696. who were misleading

  697. the people in Thyatira

  698. it doesn't really matter

  699. but I think we're being

  700. encouraged

  701. to think back

  702. to the characteristics

  703. of that woman Jezebel

  704. who has come along

  705. and has done similar things

  706. to this church in Thyatira

  707. what was their situation

  708. well they were in a town

  709. which we don't know

  710. an awful lot about

  711. but we do know

  712. that they had lots

  713. and lots of trades

  714. do you remember

  715. the story of Lydia

  716. Lydia the seller of purple

  717. well she was from Thyatira

  718. so Lydia was a woman

  719. incidentally

  720. who could hardly stand

  721. in sharper contrast

  722. to Jezebel

  723. if you want to do

  724. a wee character study

  725. between the two

  726. but Lydia was the seller

  727. of purple

  728. who had come from Thyatira

  729. so her trade was in cloth

  730. and in dyeing cloths

  731. and equally we understand

  732. there were people

  733. who dealt in copper

  734. in bronze

  735. in other fabrics

  736. in leather

  737. and in that town

  738. in order to succeed

  739. in business

  740. it seems as though

  741. you had to be part

  742. of some of the very

  743. powerful trade guilds

  744. effectively the unions

  745. for the particular

  746. types of employment

  747. that you were dealing with

  748. and associated with

  749. those unions

  750. was a whole lifestyle

  751. it wasn't that

  752. you just had to

  753. be there to try

  754. and purely help

  755. with the trading

  756. of those goods

  757. but rather it was

  758. a whole lifestyle thing

  759. and there were all sorts

  760. of rituals

  761. there does seem

  762. as though

  763. within those unions

  764. there would be

  765. all sorts of

  766. deviant sexual practices

  767. going on

  768. and indeed

  769. there would be

  770. idolatrous worship

  771. and the eating of foods

  772. offered to these idols

  773. and the Christians

  774. in that church

  775. had heard clearly

  776. the word of God

  777. as it had been brought

  778. to them

  779. and they'd heard

  780. clearly the instructions

  781. that they were not

  782. under a whole heap

  783. of rules and regulations

  784. as followers of Jesus

  785. if you look back

  786. to some of the

  787. book of Acts

  788. and the instructions

  789. that were given

  790. to the church

  791. we don't have time

  792. to look at them

  793. in detail

  794. but those instructions

  795. were saying

  796. you know you don't

  797. have to be

  798. those of you

  799. who are not Jews

  800. and are now Gentiles

  801. you don't have to be

  802. circumcised

  803. not all about

  804. following the law

  805. you're under grace

  806. it's all about

  807. just following Jesus

  808. but there are some

  809. instructions that we've

  810. got for you

  811. avoid sexual immorality

  812. and avoid the food

  813. that's been offered

  814. to idols

  815. that was very inconvenient

  816. for these Christians

  817. in Thyatira

  818. because it meant

  819. that they couldn't

  820. really be part

  821. of the trade guilds

  822. it was potentially

  823. going to have an impact

  824. on their livelihood

  825. it was potentially

  826. going to have an impact

  827. on their income

  828. and so along comes

  829. this Jezebel

  830. or the Jezebel

  831. and says to them

  832. no no no no

  833. that's far too strict

  834. you've been drawing

  835. up the rules

  836. far too tightly here

  837. of course you should

  838. be worshipping Jesus

  839. and of course

  840. I'm one of you

  841. and I also am a follower

  842. of Jesus

  843. but it's absolutely

  844. fine to be

  845. worshipping Jesus

  846. and in fact

  847. work hard

  848. serve others

  849. in the church

  850. be involved

  851. but at the same time

  852. you can be part

  853. of the trade guilds

  854. and Jesus won't mind

  855. if you participate

  856. in those rituals

  857. because you're free

  858. you're free

  859. you're not under law

  860. so no no

  861. don't describe

  862. that as

  863. idolatry

  864. or immorality

  865. it's absolutely

  866. fine

  867. and some of them

  868. some of the people

  869. in that church

  870. had followed

  871. Jezebel's teachings

  872. they hadn't departed

  873. from the faith

  874. but they had

  875. compromised

  876. they were committed

  877. and compromised

  878. they'd got back

  879. involved

  880. in all of

  881. the immorality

  882. the sexual immorality

  883. and idolatry

  884. of their past life

  885. they thought

  886. they could worship

  887. God

  888. and follow Jesus

  889. and continue

  890. to live

  891. as they liked

  892. and the solemn thing

  893. is maybe for many

  894. of them

  895. they've been doing

  896. that for quite a while

  897. and it didn't seem

  898. to be a problem

  899. maybe for some of them

  900. they've been living

  901. that way for years

  902. and years

  903. and years

  904. and they've grown

  905. increasingly confident

  906. that it was

  907. absolutely fine

  908. to follow Jesus

  909. and live as you like

  910. and then

  911. the eyes

  912. of him

  913. who had been

  914. seeing them

  915. all the time

  916. he reminds them

  917. that he's been

  918. watching them

  919. he's been seeing

  920. and knowing

  921. he's been urging

  922. them to turn

  923. from this

  924. he's been urging

  925. them to repent

  926. and many of them

  927. have been refusing

  928. to do so

  929. and now

  930. he's going to come

  931. to them

  932. in punishment

  933. and so how are we

  934. going to apply

  935. this ourselves

  936. because we know

  937. that we don't just

  938. read God's word

  939. simply to be informed

  940. but for our lives

  941. and hearts

  942. to be moved

  943. and changed

  944. and as I've thought

  945. long and hard

  946. about what the

  947. application of this

  948. is for my life

  949. and potentially

  950. for our church

  951. I've got three things

  952. to offer you

  953. this morning

  954. three risks

  955. that I think

  956. we can get into

  957. that might arise

  958. and that might be

  959. linked directly

  960. or indirectly

  961. to the sorts

  962. of ways

  963. in which

  964. the church

  965. at Thyatira

  966. were going

  967. astray

  968. and the first

  969. one it's right

  970. there

  971. and it is

  972. sexual immorality

  973. and idolatry

  974. do we think

  975. that we can

  976. continue in the

  977. church

  978. and follow Jesus

  979. while actually

  980. adopting the same

  981. sexual practices

  982. that are widespread

  983. among us

  984. in our world

  985. and idolatry

  986. in all of its forms

  987. actually seek

  988. thinking we can

  989. worship two gods

  990. Jesus spoke quite

  991. clearly about that

  992. didn't he

  993. you cannot serve

  994. two masters

  995. you can't serve

  996. God and money

  997. you'll either

  998. love the one

  999. you'll hate

  1000. the other

  1001. and you know

  1002. you can't do it

  1003. and I pause

  1004. there lest any

  1005. of us feel

  1006. that as individuals

  1007. what we've done

  1008. is swallowed the

  1009. lie of the Jezebel

  1010. who said it's okay

  1011. to continue to be

  1012. a follower of Jesus

  1013. while also engaging

  1014. in sexual immorality

  1015. and idolatry

  1016. but I think there

  1017. may be other risks

  1018. for some of us

  1019. who perhaps

  1020. think yeah

  1021. are there other ways

  1022. in which we might

  1023. be committed

  1024. but compromised

  1025. well I think

  1026. sexual immorality

  1027. and idolatry

  1028. will be the risk

  1029. for some

  1030. I think self-preservation

  1031. and isolation

  1032. may be a risk

  1033. that we could also

  1034. fall into

  1035. as a church

  1036. and as individuals

  1037. self-preservation

  1038. and isolation

  1039. what do I mean

  1040. I think it's easy

  1041. to think

  1042. well actually

  1043. we will worship

  1044. God

  1045. and we will focus

  1046. on Jesus

  1047. but you know what

  1048. we're a bit scared

  1049. of the world

  1050. out there

  1051. and so we're going

  1052. to separate ourselves

  1053. from it

  1054. we're going to

  1055. isolate ourselves

  1056. from it

  1057. we might even

  1058. seem a little bit

  1059. angry about the

  1060. world out there

  1061. about all that's

  1062. going on

  1063. and actually

  1064. our whole approach

  1065. to life and faith

  1066. will be one of

  1067. self-preservation

  1068. and isolation

  1069. it's all about me

  1070. it's all about my

  1071. family

  1072. it's all about my

  1073. church

  1074. it's about trying

  1075. to stand up

  1076. against the

  1077. terrible government

  1078. out of there

  1079. this is fairly

  1080. close to my heart

  1081. as one who works

  1082. for government

  1083. and at times

  1084. I have to say

  1085. I observe in

  1086. the Christian church

  1087. an awful lot

  1088. of self-preservation

  1089. and isolation

  1090. I don't think

  1091. I observe

  1092. an awful lot

  1093. of we are

  1094. absolutely praying

  1095. for you

  1096. as lawmakers

  1097. we are with you

  1098. we want to support

  1099. you

  1100. we want to stand

  1101. with you

  1102. whether that's

  1103. in protecting

  1104. the most vulnerable

  1105. whether that's

  1106. in welcoming

  1107. the orphan

  1108. and supporting

  1109. the poor

  1110. and the needy

  1111. rather I think

  1112. what I sometimes

  1113. observe among

  1114. the church

  1115. is self-preservation

  1116. and isolation

  1117. and I suggest

  1118. that if that's

  1119. the route we go

  1120. down

  1121. then we may be

  1122. swallowing the

  1123. lie of the

  1124. Jezebel

  1125. in the same way

  1126. as if we went

  1127. down the route

  1128. of sexual immorality

  1129. and idolatry

  1130. but I suppose

  1131. I've been challenged

  1132. by a third way

  1133. in which we might

  1134. be swallowing

  1135. a lie

  1136. in which we might

  1137. be committed

  1138. but compromised

  1139. today

  1140. it's maybe not

  1141. self-preservation

  1142. and isolation

  1143. I wonder if it's

  1144. maybe silence

  1145. and indifference

1146. and this is the one

  1147. that comes closest

1148. to me to be honest

  1149. where actually

  1150. we think that we

  1151. can be committed

  1152. to Jesus

  1153. and fully engaged

  1154. in the life

  1155. of the church

  1156. and in service

  1157. in the church

  1158. but when it comes

  1159. to the world

  1160. out there

  1161. when it comes

  1162. to the spiritual

  1163. well-being

  1164. of our neighbours

  1165. of our colleagues

  1166. when it comes

  1167. to the spiritual

  1168. health of our nation

  1169. actually we have

  1170. nothing to say

  1171. we are silent

  1172. and we are

  1173. indifferent

  1174. might that be

  1175. the mark

  1176. of some of us

  1177. and might that

  1178. at times be

  1179. the mark

  1180. of the church

  1181. we'll worship

  1182. God

  1183. but we don't

  1184. feel we've

  1185. really got a

  1186. message

  1187. for those

  1188. who we are

  1189. coming into

  1190. contact with

  1191. who do not

  1192. know Jesus

  1193. his love

  1194. and forgiveness

  1195. his power

  1196. and his all-seeing

  1197. and all-knowingness

  1198. and we are

  1199. silent

  1200. and we are

  1201. indifferent

  1202. may you

  1203. reflect

  1204. on what it is

  1205. Jesus might

  1206. have to say

  1207. to you

  1208. in your

  1209. life

  1210. is it about

  1211. sexual immorality

  1212. and idolatry

  1213. is it self-preservation

  1214. and isolation

  1215. is it silence

  1216. and indifference

  1217. if it's any

  1218. of these things

  1219. then there is

  1220. an invitation

  1221. given to us

  1222. by Jesus

  1223. as he speaks

  1224. to the church

  1225. in Thyatira

  1226. verse 21

  1227. I have given

  1228. her time

  1229. to repent

  1230. of her

  1231. immorality

  1232. isn't it great

  1233. here

  1234. that Jesus

  1235. reminds them

  1236. again

  1237. that he is

  1238. gracious

  1239. that he is

  1240. loving

  1241. and that despite

  1242. all that

  1243. Jezebel

  1244. had done

  1245. she has had

  1246. opportunities

  1247. to turn

  1248. and to leave

  1249. behind her

  1250. rejection of

  1251. God

  1252. and to turn

  1253. again

  1254. to Jesus

  1255. and I trust

  1256. that as we

  1257. reflect

  1258. on this

  1259. letter

  1260. to the church

  1261. for some of us

  1262. we might feel

  1263. the call

  1264. and know

  1265. the need

  1266. to repent

  1267. to leave

  1268. behind

  1269. the areas

  1270. of

  1271. compromise

  1272. and to turn

  1273. again to our

  1274. loving

  1275. powerful

  1276. Jesus

  1277. and to serve

  1278. him

  1279. wholeheartedly

  1280. some were to

  1281. repent

  1282. and the message

  1283. to others

  1284. was to

  1285. remain

  1286. verse 24

  1287. I will not

  1288. impose

  1289. any other

  1290. burden

  1291. on those

  1292. of you

  1293. who do

  1294. not hold

  1295. to her

  1296. teaching

  1297. and who

  1298. have not

  1299. learned

  1300. Satan's

  1301. so-called

  1302. deep

  1303. secrets

  1304. just hold

  1305. on

  1306. to what

  1307. you have

  1308. until

  1309. I come

  1310. let's

  1311. ensure that

  1312. this morning

  1313. we are

  1314. ready

  1315. and before

  1316. God

  1317. ready to

  1318. repent

  1319. and also

  1320. ready to

  1321. remain

  1322. to cling

  1323. tightly

  1324. to him

  1325. and to

  1326. do his

  1327. will

  1328. to the

  1329. end

  1330. we're

  1331. almost

  1332. done

  1333. but before

  1334. I finish

  1335. there is

  1336. also a

  1337. promise

  1338. given

  1339. to

  1340. these

  1341. Christians

  1342. if they

  1343. truly

  1344. turn

  1345. from the

  1346. Jezebel

  1347. if they

  1348. repent

  1349. and if

  1350. they cling

  1351. tightly

  1352. to Christ

  1353. there's a

  1354. promise

  1355. that they

  1356. will be

  1357. given

  1358. authority

  1359. that there's

  1360. a great

  1361. future

  1362. for them

  1363. verse 26

  1364. to the

  1365. one who

  1366. is victorious

  1367. and does

  1368. my will

  1369. I will

  1370. give

  1371. authority

  1372. over the

  1373. nations

  1374. again

  1375. they're

  1376. encouraged

  1377. to see

  1378. just beyond

  1379. the

  1380. immediate

  1381. to look

  1382. to the

  1383. long

  1384. term

  1385. to

  1386. recognize

  1387. all the

  1388. plans

  1389. that

  1390. Jesus

  1391. has

  1392. in store

  1393. for them

  1394. to realize

  1395. all of

  1396. his

  1397. purposes

  1398. and to

  1399. look to

  1400. the long

  1401. term

  1402. future

  1403. as they

  1404. commit

  1405. to Christ

  1406. and then

  1407. this

  1408. slightly

  1409. curious

  1410. word

  1411. towards

  1412. the

  1413. end

  1414. I

  1415. will

  1416. also

  1417. give

  1418. that

  1419. one

  1420. the

  1421. morning

  1422. star

  1423. what does

  1424. that mean

  1425. as Jesus

  1426. speaks to

  1427. that church

  1428. and leaves

  1429. them with

  1430. this

  1431. promise

  1432. that those

  1433. who

  1434. turn from

  1435. their

  1436. lack

  1437. of

  1438. those who

  1439. turn from

  1440. their

  1441. compromise

  1442. will be

  1443. given

  1444. the

  1445. morning

  1446. star

  1447. well let

  1448. me turn

  1449. you to

  1450. Revelation

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  1451. chapter 22

  1452. and to

  1453. verse 16

  1454. Revelation

    Revelation 22:16

  1455. 22

  1456. verse 16

  1457. I

  1458. Jesus

  1459. have

  1460. sent

  1461. my

  1462. angel

  1463. to give

  1464. you

  1465. this

  1466. testimony

  1467. for the

  1468. churches

  1469. I

  1470. am

  1471. the

  1472. root

  1473. and

  1474. offspring

  1475. of

  1476. David

  1477. and

  1478. the

  1479. bright

  1480. morning

  1481. star

  1482. Jesus

  1483. himself

  1484. describes

  1485. himself

  1486. as

  1487. the

  1488. morning

  1489. star

  1490. I

  1491. think

  1492. that's

  1493. where

  1494. we'll

  1495. leave

  1496. the

  1497. church

  1498. in

  1499. Thyatira

  1500. today

  1501. we'll

  1502. leave

  1503. them

  1504. with

  1505. this

  1506. great

  1507. promise

  1508. that if

  1509. they turn

  1510. from their

  1511. compromise

  1512. in whatever

  1513. way that

  1514. might be

  1515. they will

  1516. not only

  1517. know

  1518. blessing

  1519. from

  1520. Jesus

  1521. they will

  1522. not only

  1523. know what

  1524. it is to

  1525. be doing

  1526. the will

  1527. of Jesus

  1528. but they

  1529. will have

  1530. Jesus

  1531. he

  1532. who describes

  1533. himself as

  1534. the bright

  1535. morning star

  1536. will be

  1537. theirs

  1538. they will

  1539. live their

  1540. life

  1541. in

  1542. intimate

  1543. fellowship

  1544. connected

  1545. to

  1546. and

  1547. knowing

  1548. Jesus

  1549. that promise

  1550. is available

  1551. for us

  1552. isn't it a

  1553. great one

  1554. that we

  1555. can know

  1556. Jesus

  1557. he will

  1558. give to

  1559. us

  1560. the morning

  1561. star

  1562. he'll give

  1563. us

  1564. himself

  1565. his

  1566. presence

  1567. his

  1568. power

  1569. his glory

  1570. all that

  1571. he promises

  1572. all that

  1573. he is

  1574. he offers

  1575. that to

  1576. us

  1577. but invites

  1578. us to

  1579. reflect

  1580. and maybe

  1581. to repent

  1582. if there

  1583. has been

  1584. compromise

  1585. alongside

  1586. commitment

  1587. in our

  1588. lives

  1589. let's pause

  1590. and pray

  1591. now

  1592. Lord Jesus

  1593. we just

  1594. want to

  1595. turn our

  1596. eyes

  1597. to you

  1598. albeit

  1599. we know

  1600. that if

  1601. we could

  1602. see you

  1603. we would

  1604. scarce be

  1605. able to

  1606. look at

  1607. you face

  1608. to face

  1609. as we

  1610. think of

  1611. your eyes

  1612. of blazing

  1613. fire

  1614. as we

  1615. think of

  1616. the fact

  1617. that you

  1618. tell us

  1619. that you

  1620. see us

  1621. you know

  1622. us

  1623. and you

  1624. search our

  1625. hearts

  1626. and our

  1627. minds

  1628. and as

  1629. we linger

  1630. for a few

  1631. minutes

  1632. together

  1633. as we

  1634. sing

  1635. as we

  1636. have this

  1637. opportunity

  1638. to take

  1639. bread

  1640. and to

  1641. take

  1642. this

  1643. cup

  1644. we

  1645. simply

  1646. open

  1647. our

  1648. lives

  1649. and our

  1650. hearts

  1651. to you

  1652. Lord

  1653. Jesus

  1654. as the

  1655. one who

  1656. sees us

  1657. knows us

  1658. searches

  1659. our hearts

  1660. and minds

  1661. and yet

  1662. the one

  1663. who says

  1664. again today

  1665. I love

  1666. you

  1667. and I've

  1668. laid down

  1669. my life

  1670. as the

  1671. perfect

  1672. sacrifice

  1673. for your

  1674. sin

  1675. thank you

  1676. Jesus

  1677. Amen
