  1. Oh, thanks once again for inviting me to come and be with you this morning.

  2. I've heard many great things about Brunsford Evangelical from John, from Graham, and for those who come here.

  3. And it's a real joy, and I mean that sincerely, to actually be with you, worshipping God with you this morning.

  4. Now, if you've got a Bible, why don't you grab one of these Bibles there?

  5. Why don't you turn to Revelation 3?

  6. Revelation 3, chapter 7. We're going to read this in a minute or so.

  7. But before we do that, I'm sure it has not escaped your attention that right now, Edinburgh is part of the largest arts festival in the world.

  8. We have the Edinburgh Fringe on our doorstep right now.

  9. You cannot walk down the Royal Mile without getting flyers thrust in your face,

  10. and people inviting you to come see improvised sketch comedy, and all sorts of stuff like that.

  11. But as you walk down the Royal Mile, it's also very hard to escape your attention the kind of society that we today live in.

  12. It's not very hard, when looking at the shows that are on the offer, to see just what this society praises,

  13. what this society seeks, what this society desires, what this society affirms.

  14. I don't know if this year I'm more aware of it or not, but the posters I've seen up in the Royal Mile and elsewhere in Edinburgh,

  15. and the obscenities on these posters seem to have increased over the years.

  16. You see, when you look at what the popular shows are at the Fringe today,

  17. we become all too aware of the godless society in now which we live.

  18. I've seen a few shows on the Fringe, and I can count, I think I've seen two shows

  19. that have not included either swearing, nudity, or blasphemy.

  20. It's very hard to find a good show that doesn't contain these three things.

  21. But as we've seen these shows, as we've seen the different plays on the Fringe,

  22. another thing struck me.

  23. It's that everyone is desperate to try and find some answers.

  24. People are desperate to find out what it is to be human.

  25. What is this life really all about?

  26. And people are trying to find the answers in the wrong places.

  27. I went to see a play this week at the Traverse Theatre,

  28. and it was dealing with issues of loneliness,

  29. and humans seeking to find some form of connection with other people.

  30. But yet they're chasing after that connection completely in the wrong places.

  31. And this play offered absolutely no answers.

  32. Because, you see, our godless society doesn't have the answers to the big questions

  33. that we are seeking to find out.

  34. Now, we might think, oh, that's great.

  35. As a church, that's fantastic, because we now have the opportunity

  36. to step in there and offer the answers we believe we find in Jesus Christ.

  37. Great opportunity, and you're absolutely right.

  38. We do have lots of opportunities to make Christ known in Edinburgh.

  39. The more secular our society becomes,

  40. the more opportunity the church has to point people to Christ.

  41. But here's my question.

  42. As a church,

  43. do we not feel

  44. like we're just not making that much of an impact upon our city?

  45. We have 500,000 people on our doorstep.

  46. I know that Charlotte Chapel, last year,

  47. we saw about six people come to faith

  48. for the whole year.

  49. Praise the Lord for every one of these souls

  50. that went from death to life,

  51. but we want to see more, do we not?

  52. We've got half a million people there

  53. who are completely lost at this moment.

  54. Do we not get tired?

  55. People looking at you a bit weird

  56. because you believe all this God stuff.

  57. Do you not feel tired that people judge you

  58. and look at you with disgust

  59. because you believe in biblical marriage?

  60. Do we not get tired feeling like our voices are not being heard,

  61. or when they are heard,

  62. they're mocked and ridiculed?

  63. Do we not get tired that because

  64. we're a church that holds to the Bible's teaching,

  65. we're seen to be,

  66. at best, irrelevant to society,

  67. or at worst, a dangerous threat?

  68. Does it not feel like sometimes

  69. it's just easier to pack this all in?

  70. To stop telling people about Christ

  71. just to have that easy, quiet life?

  72. I'm tempted by that.

  73. And I'm sure many of us today

  74. are also tempted by that.

  75. Does it not feel like we are just too weak?

  76. Too weak to make Christ known in Edinburgh and beyond.

  77. So what should we do about this?

  78. How should a Bible-centred church

  79. in the 21st century Edinburgh

  80. respond to our increasingly godless society?

  81. What does God have to say about all this?

  82. Well, to find out,

  83. we're going to look at an ancient letter

  84. to an ancient church

  85. written in an ancient book.

  86. Because we believe that this ancient book,

  87. the Bible,

  88. is God's living word.

  89. That it's just as relevant to us today

  90. in 21st century Edinburgh

  91. as it was to those in the 1st century.

  92. And because what we're experiencing today

  93. is not all that different

  94. to what the church has experienced

  95. over the past 2,000 years.

  96. Now, as has already been healthily said

  97. throughout this series,

  98. the key to the letters in the churches

  99. in Revelation

  100. is not to pick out which church

  101. we are most like,

  102. but it's to see

  103. what Jesus commends about these churches

  104. and what he condemns about these churches,

  105. put that together,

  106. and we get a bigger picture

  107. of what Jesus thinks

  108. is a healthy, faithful church.

  109. Because after all,

  110. the opinion that matters most about church

  111. is the head of the church,

  112. Jesus Christ.

  113. So that mind,

  114. go to Revelations 3, verse 7.

    Revelation 3:7

  115. Before we get to it,

  116. I am going to come to this, by the way.

  117. But I want to give you

  118. a little bit more context first

  119. before we come to this, okay?

  120. Now this,

  121. we've now reached in our series,

  122. The Letter to Philadelphia.

  123. Now a few things to say

  124. about Philadelphia

  125. before we read this letter.

  126. First of all,

  127. Philadelphia is not found

  128. in the U.S. of A.

  129. and it's not the hometown

  130. of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,

  131. nor is it a letter

  132. written to a cream cheese factory.

  133. Philadelphia is actually found

  134. in Asia Minor,

  135. what we now know today

  136. as Turkey.

  137. And you can still visit it today.

  138. It's got a different name now.

  139. It's called Alasihur,

  140. I think.

  141. Alasihur.

  142. Something like that.

  143. But you can still visit that

  144. on the west coast of Turkey.

  145. Now the surrounding area,

  146. very fertile,

  147. it was renowned for its grapes,

  148. for its winemaking,

  149. but it was also a city

  150. that was known

  151. for its pagan festivals.

  152. The people of Philadelphia

  153. were very much

  154. into worshipping gods.

  155. They worshipped the gods of Olympus

  156. as well as their own local gods.

  157. In fact,

  158. the nickname for Philadelphia

  159. was Little Athens

  160. because of their many

  161. worships of gods.

  162. Now it's to the church

  163. of Philadelphia

  164. that's written a letter.

  165. This letter is written

  166. that the Philadelphian church

  167. is the youngest

  168. of our seven churches

  169. and it's perhaps

  170. the weakest

  171. of our seven churches.

  172. If you had a line-up

  173. of all seven churches

  174. of Philadelphia,

  175. all the church of Revelation,

  176. sorry,

  177. Philadelphia would be

  178. the last to get picked.

  179. You know,

  180. you'd have the more established

  181. Ephesian church,

  182. probably the team captain

  183. with its great work ethic,

  184. it doesn't get weary.

  185. Then you've got Pergamum

  186. with the vice-captain

  187. because she has

  188. a faithful witness.

  189. And then you get down the line,

  190. at the end of the line,

  191. there's no one left to be picked

  192. and you have little old Philadelphia,

  193. the youngest and the weakest,

  194. who are not really

  195. all that much to look at.

  196. Other churches

  197. are more like the Royal Marines,

  198. Philadelphia is more like

  199. Dad's army.

  200. Here is a small church

  201. that's struggling

  202. to make an impact

  203. in a city.

  204. A church that faced

  205. great opposition

  206. from the local people

  207. as well as the local Jews.

  208. This was a church

  209. that was denied entry

  210. into the local synagogue

  211. by the Jews.

  212. This was a church

  213. lacking in strength,

  214. a church that was all

  215. to wear of its own weakness

  216. and insecurity,

  217. and a church

  218. that needs to be strengthened.

  219. So with that in mind,

  220. let's finally read

  221. Revelations chapter 3,

    Revelation 3:7

  222. verse 7.

  223. To the angel of the church

  224. in Philadelphia write,

  225. These are the words of him

  226. who is holy and true,

  227. who holds the key of David.

  228. What he opens,

  229. no one can shut,

  230. and what he shuts,

  231. no one can open.

  232. I know your deeds.

  233. See, I have placed before you

  234. an open door

  235. that no one can shut.

  236. I know that you have

  237. little strength,

  238. yet you have kept my word,

  239. and have not denied my name.

  240. I will make those

  241. who are of the synagogue of Satan,

  242. who claim to be Jews,

  243. though they are not,

  244. but are liars,

  245. I will make them come

  246. and fall down at your feet

  247. and acknowledge

  248. that I have loved you.

  249. Since you have kept

  250. my command to endure

  251. patiently,

  252. I will also keep you

  253. from the hour of trial

  254. that is going to come

  255. upon the whole world

  256. to test those

  257. who live on the earth.

  258. I am coming soon.

  259. Hold on to what you have

  260. so that no one

  261. will take your crown.

  262. Him who overcomes,

  263. I will make a pillar

  264. in the temple of my God.

  265. Never again will he leave it.

  266. I will write on him

  267. the name of my God

  268. and the name of the city

  269. of my God,

  270. the new Jerusalem,

  271. which is coming down

  272. out of heaven

  273. from my God.

  274. And I will also write on him

  275. my new name.

  276. He who has an ear,

  277. let him hear

  278. what the Spirit says

  279. to the churches.

  280. This is God's Word.

  281. What a letter we have here.

  282. What a wonderful letter

  283. filled with encouragement

  284. and wonderful promises

  285. for this weak

  286. yet faithful

  287. little church.

  288. See, unlike the other

  289. letters we've seen,

  290. this letter

  291. does not contain

  292. one single rebuke.

  293. There's only two letters

  294. that don't have a rebuke.

  295. The other being

  296. Sismarina

  297. and this one here.

  298. Not a single rebuke.

  299. See,

  300. to this church

  301. Jesus says,

  302. yes,

  303. you are weak

  304. but you are a faithful church

  305. and I love you

  306. and I will keep you.

  307. So what was it

  308. about Philadelphia

  309. that made them

  310. so faithful?

  311. What is it about them

  312. that we can learn

  313. from them today?

  314. Well,

  315. the first thing

  316. and perhaps the biggest thing

  317. that we can learn

  318. is that they have

  319. a small view

  320. of themselves

  321. and a big view

  322. of who Christ is.

  323. a small view

  324. of themselves

  325. and a big view

  326. of who the risen

  327. Lord Savior

  328. Jesus Christ is.

  329. They, like Jesus,

  330. knew they were weak.

  331. They knew they were struggling

  332. in the face of persecution,

  333. suffering,

  334. and discrimination.

  335. But they also knew

  336. who Jesus was.

  337. They knew

  338. that he was worth it

  339. to stay faithful to him.

  340. That is why

  341. there's nothing but praise

  342. and affirmation

  343. towards this weak

  344. yet faithful

  345. little church.

  346. You see,

  347. I think the reason,

  348. or one of the reasons

  349. why we get so easily tired

  350. when it comes to

  351. reaching Edinburgh

  352. for the gospel

  353. is because we're trying

  354. to do things on our own.

  355. It's because we're trying

  356. to do things

  357. by our own efforts

  358. and we've forgotten

  359. just who it is

  360. that we serve.

  361. We've lost sight

  362. of just how big he is.

  363. We serve the almighty God.

  364. We serve the almighty God

  365. who's the creator

  366. of all things.

  367. We serve the risen

  368. Lord Jesus Christ

  369. who died on a cross

  370. to take the punishment

  371. for our sins

  372. and yet rose,

  373. three days later,

  374. rose back to life.

  375. We serve the living God

  376. who defeated death itself.

  377. Yet too often

  378. we try and do things

  379. by our own esteem.

  380. Too often we depend

  381. and rely upon ourselves

  382. than lean upon

  383. the almighty God

  384. who can do all things.

  385. But when we think

  386. like that,

  387. we fall into the trap

  388. of thinking too much

  389. of ourselves

  390. and too little

  391. of God.

  392. we forget

  393. what Paul says

  394. in Corinthians.

  395. Think of what you were

  396. when you were called.

  397. Not many of you

  398. were wise

  399. by human standards.

  400. Not many influential.

  401. Not many of you

  402. were of noble birth

  403. but God chose

  404. the foolish things

  405. of the world

  406. to shame the wise.

  407. God chose

  408. the weak things

  409. of the world

  410. to shame the strong.

  411. God chose

  412. the lowly things

  413. of this world

  414. and the despised things

  415. and the things

  416. that are not

  417. to nullify

  418. the things that are

  419. so that no one

  420. may boast before him.

  421. God has not chosen

  422. the strongest.

  423. God has not chosen

  424. the coolest

  425. or the most influential.

  426. No, God has chosen

  427. the weak,

  428. the foolish,

  429. those who lack

  430. any kind of influence.

  431. God has called

  432. the low so that

  433. no one may boast

  434. except in the Lord.

  435. Brothers and sisters,

  436. we are weak.

  437. We are foolish.

  438. We do not hold

  439. much influence.

  440. No wonder we get tired

  441. when we try to do

  442. things by ourselves.

  443. No wonder we struggle

  444. to make an impact

  445. on our city

  446. for we have such

  447. a warped view

  448. of ourselves

  449. and such a low view

  450. of who the God

  451. is that we serve.

  452. And I think

  453. it's very deliberate

  454. that each

  455. of these seven letters

  456. all begin

  457. with describing

  458. the awesome

  459. attributes

  460. of Jesus Christ.

  461. If you need

  462. a bigger picture

  463. of who Christ is,

  464. then come with me

  465. to verse seven.

  466. Look with me

  467. at the title

  468. Jesus has given.

  469. These are the words

  470. of him who is

  471. holy and true.

  472. A more literal

  473. translation would be

  474. the holy one,

  475. the true one.

  476. See the term holy

  477. used frequently

  478. throughout the Bible

  479. and it's a title

  480. for God.

  481. It's the title

  482. of divinity.

  483. In other words,

  484. the risen Jesus

  485. is being described

  486. as divine.

  487. The true one,

  488. less common,

  489. but it means

  490. that Jesus is genuine.

  491. His word is reliable,

  492. which is quite crucial

  493. for this church

  494. to hear

  495. considering the opposition

  496. they face

  497. from local Jews

  498. who will deny

  499. who Jesus Christ is.

  500. Hear Jesus saying,

  501. I am the risen Messiah

  502. and my word

  503. is reliable.

  504. I am the holy one

  505. and I am

  506. the true one.

  507. Let's keep going

  508. to verse seven.

  509. What else do we see

  510. about Jesus?

  511. Who holds

  512. the key of David.

  513. What he opens,

  514. no one can shut.

  515. What he shuts,

  516. no one can open.

  517. Jesus is holding

  518. the key of David.

  519. Now if you want

  520. a background

  521. on the key of David,

  522. I'd encourage you

  523. to go and check out

  524. Isaiah 22.

  525. We don't have time

  526. this morning to go there,

  527. but do do that

  528. as homework later on.

  529. But the key of David

  530. opens the way

  531. or the door

  532. to the heavenly kingdom.

  533. And whoever holds

  534. this key

  535. has the authority

  536. to either let people in

  537. or to deny them entry.

  538. You heard of the phrase

  539. the key to the city.

  540. Edinburgh's got

  541. two giant keys

  542. to the city

  543. that are given

  544. to the queen

  545. every time she comes

  546. up to stay.

  547. Whoever holds

  548. this key

  549. has the authority

  550. to back in the day

  551. used to be

  552. to literally open

  553. the door to the wall

  554. to let people

  555. come in and out

  556. of the city.

  557. Whoever holds

  558. the key

  559. has authority

  560. to let people

  561. in or out

  562. of the city.

  563. Now obviously

  564. our keys to Edinburgh

  565. are absolutely huge.

  566. They're more symbolic.

  567. There's not a giant

  568. lock somewhere

  569. that these keys open.

  570. But it symbolises

  571. when they're given

  572. to the queen

  573. that as monarch

  574. she has absolute

  575. royal authority

  576. over the city

  577. of Edinburgh.

  578. She does then

  579. actually hand them

  580. back to Edinburgh

  581. again trusting

  582. in their care.

  583. But it's the same idea

  584. here in Revelation.

  585. Jesus is holding

  586. the key of David

  587. as symbolic

  588. of the fact

  589. that the risen Jesus

  590. the king of kings

  591. has absolute authority

  592. over who enters

  593. the heavenly kingdom.

  594. And his authority

  595. cannot be overruled.

  596. What he opens

  597. no one can shut.

  598. What he shut

  599. no one can open.

  600. Jesus possesses

  601. undisputed

  602. royal authority.

  603. This is who we serve.

  604. The risen Lord Jesus

  605. the holy one

  606. the true one

  607. the keeper

  608. of the key of David.

  609. The Philadelphians

  610. knew this

  611. and we need

  612. to know this too.

  613. So what does a church

  614. as a low view

  615. of itself

  616. and a high view

  617. of Christ

  618. look like?

  619. Well I believe

  620. we've got an example

  621. here in this letter.

  622. Jesus says

  623. to this church

  624. I know your deeds

  625. I know that

  626. verse 8

  627. you have kept

  628. my words.

  629. Here we see

  630. the first characteristics

  631. of a faithful church

  632. that thinks

  633. low of itself

  634. but yet

  635. high

  636. of God.

  637. Unlike other churches

  638. mentioned Revelation

  639. this little church

  640. had not been led

  641. astray

  642. by heretical teaching.

  643. They had not

  644. fallen into the trap

  645. of compromising

  646. the word

  647. by adding extras

  648. or removing parts

  649. from it.

  650. They had not

  651. turned God's word

  652. into a picking mix

  653. but instead

  654. they remained faithful

  655. and they remained

  656. true to the words.

  657. Sadly in Edinburgh

  658. you do not have to

  659. look long

  660. to see a church

  661. that's turned

  662. the Bible

  663. into a picking mix.

  664. You do not have

  665. to look long

  666. to see a church

  667. in Edinburgh

  668. that's watered

  669. in the gospel

  670. so that they

  671. can appear

  672. relevant to society.

  673. So they speak

  674. a lot about God

  675. being a God

  676. of love

  677. but don't speak

  678. much of the

  679. judgment

  680. and the sin

  681. and hell.

  682. They completely

  683. ignore these realities

  684. because they want

  685. to be more palatable

  686. to society.

  687. But rather

  688. ironically

  689. by ignoring

  690. such things

  691. they're also

  692. denying that

  693. God is

  694. a God

  695. of love.

  696. And tragically

  697. you do not

  698. have to look

  699. long at these

  700. churches

  701. to see

  702. their numbers

  703. dwindle.

  704. You see

  705. if we want

  706. to be relevant

  707. to society

  708. if we want

  709. to draw

  710. people to

  711. Christ

  712. we don't

  713. do that

  714. by watering

  715. down

  716. God's word.

  717. We don't

  718. do that

  719. by turning

  720. it into

  721. a picking mix.

  722. No we do

  723. that by being

  724. counter-cultural.

  725. We do that

  726. by holding fast

  727. of what the

  728. Bible teaches.

  729. We do that

  730. by staying

  731. faithful and

  732. true to

  733. God's word

  734. the Bible.

  735. We do that

  736. by keeping

  737. God's word.

  738. And we do

  739. that by having

  740. a big picture

  741. of who Christ

  742. is and not

  743. being afraid

  744. to be seen

  745. as bigots.

  746. Not being

  747. afraid to be

  748. persecuted,

  749. to be discriminated

  750. against because

  751. we hold to

  752. the Bible's

  753. teaching.

  754. The church

  755. of Philadelphia

  756. knew this.

  757. We need to

  758. know this too.

  759. Second

  760. characteristic of

  761. a faithful

  762. church,

  763. Jesus says to

  764. his church,

  765. I know your

  766. deeds, I know

  767. that.

  768. Verse 8,

  769. you have

  770. not denied

  771. my name.

  772. In the face

  773. of persecution,

  774. in the face

  775. of suffering

  776. and discrimination,

  777. this weak

  778. church never

  779. denied the

  780. name of

  781. Christ.

  782. They must

  783. have been

  784. under such

  785. pressure,

  786. such temptation,

  787. especially from

  788. the Jews,

  789. to deny that

  790. Jesus is the

  791. Christ,

  792. that he is

  793. the risen

  794. Lord,

  795. that he is

  796. the Son

  797. of God.

  798. But yet not

  799. once did

  800. they deny

  801. his name.

  802. So you

  803. think there

  804. are perhaps

  805. three ways

  806. in which we

  807. today can

  808. deny the

  809. name of

  810. Christ.

  811. First of

  812. all, we

  813. can deny

  814. who Jesus

  815. is, that

  816. he is the

  817. Son of

  818. God, that

  819. he is the

  820. promised Messiah,

  821. that he was

  822. without sin,

  823. that he did

  824. die on a

  825. cross for

  826. our sins,

  827. that he

  828. did raise

  829. to life

  830. three days

  831. later, that

  832. he is the

  833. saviour of

  834. the world,

  835. that he is

  836. the only way

  837. to salvation.

  838. I am the

  839. way, the

  840. truth, the

  841. life.

  842. In a

  843. society where

  844. absolute truth

  845. must be

  846. rejected,

  847. uncertainty

  848. seen as

  849. arrogance,

  850. these are

  851. counter-cultural

  852. claims.

  853. But a

  854. faithful follower

  855. of Christ, a

  856. faithful church,

  857. will hold to

  858. all these

  859. claims.

  860. To deny

  861. any of

  862. them is

  863. deny who

  864. Jesus is

  865. and therefore

  866. deny his

  867. name.

  868. I think

  869. the second

  870. way that

  871. we can

  872. perhaps deny

  873. Jesus'

  874. name is

  875. to

  876. not

  877. acknowledge

  878. Jesus

  879. before

  880. others.

  881. Ashamed

  882. of who

  883. he is,

  884. ashamed to

  885. tell others

  886. about Christ.

  887. So maybe

  888. we do

  889. confess in

  890. our hearts

  891. that Jesus

  892. is Lord,

  893. but we

  894. still deny

  895. him by

  896. not telling

  897. other people

  898. about him.

  899. Now,

  900. I'm speaking

  901. as much to

  902. myself here,

  903. we're all

  904. slow to

  905. admit our

  906. faith to

  907. others,

  908. we are.

  909. We live

  910. in a

  911. culture that

  912. is increasingly

  913. hostile to

  914. Christianity.

  915. We're

  916. painted as

  917. ignorant

  918. people who

  919. believe in

  920. harmful,

  921. bigoted

  922. fairy tales.

  923. And that

  924. can lead

  925. us to

  926. shrink

  927. back.

  928. But by

  929. doing so,

  930. we make

  931. Jesus look

  932. small.

  933. We make

  934. him look

  935. like he

  936. is not

  937. worth living

  938. our lives

  939. for him.

  940. And by

  941. doing so,

  942. we deny

  943. who Jesus

  944. is and

  945. what he

  946. has done

  947. for us.

  948. Jesus.

  949. Jesus has

  950. absolute

  951. authority over

  952. who passes

  953. through the

  954. door of

  955. salvation.

  956. And if

  957. when we

  958. get to

  959. heaven,

  960. Jesus

  961. says,

  962. you're

  963. not with

  964. me,

  965. you're

  966. not

  967. getting

  968. in.

  969. There are

  970. many people

  971. outside our

  972. doors who

  973. do not know

  974. Jesus, who

  975. are not going

  976. to get in

  977. right now.

  978. And yet,

  979. we shrink

  980. back and

  981. tell them of

  982. who Christ

  983. is, of the

  984. salvation that

  985. can be found

  986. in him

  987. alone.

  988. By doing

  989. so, we

  990. deny his

  991. name.

  992. We have a

  993. lower opinion

  994. of who

  995. Christ is

  996. and a

  997. bigger opinion

  998. of who

  999. we, who

  1000. man is.

  1001. Again, it

  1002. must be so

  1003. tempting for

  1004. the Philadelphians

  1005. to just keep

  1006. quiet about

  1007. who Jesus

  1008. was, keep

  1009. their mouths

  1010. shut.

  1011. But they

  1012. didn't.

  1013. Why?

  1014. Because they

  1015. had a big

  1016. view of who

  1017. Christ was

  1018. and a small

  1019. view of who

  1020. they were.

  1021. But perhaps

  1022. the most

  1023. easily and

  1024. subtle way

  1025. that we can

  1026. deny who

  1027. Jesus is

  1028. is through

  1029. hypocrisy.

  1030. We may

  1031. shout from

  1032. the rooftops

  1033. Jesus

  1034. Lord, but

  1035. our messy

  1036. lives can

  1037. drown out

  1038. our words.

  1039. See, my

  1040. question for

  1041. you is, what

  1042. does your

  1043. life say?

  1044. What does

  1045. your life say

  1046. of who you

  1047. follow?

  1048. See, many

  1049. people profess

  1050. to know God

  1051. but deny him

  1052. with their

  1053. works, Titus

  1054. 1, 16.

  1055. See, faith

  1056. in Jesus will

  1057. always change

  1058. the way we

  1059. live.

  1060. So if our

  1061. lives look

  1062. like nothing

  1063. has changed,

  1064. then maybe

  1065. something is

  1066. not quite

  1067. right.

  1068. See, your

  1069. words may

  1070. acknowledge

  1071. Jesus but

  1072. do your

  1073. works deny

  1074. him?

  1075. Are you

  1076. loving others?

  1077. Are you

  1078. obeying him?

  1079. Are you

  1080. bearing fruit?

  1081. Are you

  1082. sacrificially

  1083. giving yourself

  1084. and your

  1085. resources to

  1086. others?

  1087. Are you

  1088. seeking to

  1089. keep God's

  1090. words?

  1091. Are you

  1092. seeking to

  1093. not deny

  1094. his name?

  1095. Philadelphia

  1096. kept Jesus'

  1097. name, did

  1098. not deny it.

  1099. Why?

  1100. Because they had

  1101. a big view

  1102. of who Christ

  1103. was and a

  1104. small view of

  1105. who they

  1106. were.

  1107. And Jesus

  1108. promises to

  1109. this church

  1110. in verse 9

  1111. vindication

  1112. before their

  1113. foes.

  1114. This is very

  1115. interesting because

  1116. in Isaiah

  1117. 60, 14 it

  1118. says this,

  1119. the children

  1120. of your

  1121. oppressors

  1122. will come

  1123. bowing before

  1124. you.

  1125. All who

  1126. despise you

  1127. will bow

  1128. down at

  1129. your feet.

  1130. And the

  1131. very people

  1132. who thought

  1133. that they

  1134. would be

  1135. standing there

  1136. with people

  1137. bowing before

  1138. them was the

  1139. Jews in

  1140. Philadelphia.

  1141. They thought

  1142. these Christians,

  1143. these Gentiles,

  1144. will one day

  1145. come before

  1146. them and bow

  1147. before them

  1148. in fulfillment of

  1149. this prophecy

  1150. in Isaiah

  1151. 60.

  1152. But Jesus

  1153. says,

  1154. no, no, no,

  1155. no, no.

  1156. No.

  1157. The

  1158. Philadelphian

  1159. church are

  1160. the ones

  1161. who are

  1162. going to be

  1163. standing there

  1164. and the

  1165. Jews, the

  1166. synagogue of

  1167. Satan, the

  1168. liars, will

  1169. come down

  1170. and bow

  1171. before you

  1172. and they

  1173. will see

  1174. that I

  1175. love you.

  1176. Now when

  1177. I was studying

  1178. this passage

  1179. this week,

  1180. I was annotating

  1181. my script,

  1182. I printed out

  1183. the passage,

  1184. annotated it,

  1185. and I simply

  1186. wrote the one

  1187. word,

  1188. whoa,

  1189. next to

  1190. verse 9.

  1191. Whoa.

  1192. These people

  1193. who are

  1194. oppressed in

  1195. the

  1196. Philadelphian

  1197. church,

  1198. who are

  1199. barring them

  1200. for the

  1201. synagogue,

  1202. will one

  1203. day come

  1204. and bow

  1205. at their

  1206. feet and

  1207. see that

  1208. no,

  1209. Jesus loves

  1210. them.

  1211. Whoa.

  1212. I thought

  1213. it's amazing.

  1214. How long

  1215. for that

  1216. vindication,

  1217. how I

  1218. long to

  1219. see those

  1220. who oppress

  1221. us,

  1222. call us

  1223. bigots,

  1224. those who

  1225. discriminate

  1226. against us

  1227. come bow

  1228. at my

  1229. feet.

  1230. Then I

  1231. suddenly

  1232. realized,

  1233. I'm making

  1234. much of

  1235. myself here

  1236. and little

  1237. of Christ.

  1238. If I'm

  1239. longing for

  1240. myself to

  1241. be seen

  1242. as right,

  1243. then I

  1244. have forgotten

  1245. who I

  1246. serve.

  1247. And the

  1248. more I

  1249. studied this

  1250. passage,

  1251. the more I

  1252. thought,

  1253. whoa,

  1254. look at who

  1255. Christ is,

  1256. the holy

  1257. one,

  1258. the true

  1259. one,

  1260. the keeper

  1261. of the

  1262. key of

  1263. David,

  1264. the one

  1265. who is

  1266. going to

  1267. take these

  1268. enemies to

  1269. bow

  1270. to their

  1271. feet,

  1272. the one

  1273. who loves

  1274. me.

  1275. Whoa.

  1276. The

  1277. Savior loves

  1278. me.

  1279. Whoa,

  1280. I get

  1281. to serve

  1282. him.

  1283. That will

  1284. be a

  1285. glorious day

  1286. when Christ

  1287. comes again

  1288. and when

  1289. that does

  1290. happen.

  1291. Brothers and

  1292. sisters,

  1293. we are not

  1294. going to be

  1295. looking at

  1296. enemies bent

  1297. before feet,

  1298. we are

  1299. going to be

  1300. looking at

  1301. Jesus and

  1302. says,

  1303. I love

  1304. you.

  1305. We're

  1306. going to

  1307. have this

  1308. big,

  1309. real picture

  1310. of who

  1311. Christ is.

  1312. We are

  1313. going to

  1314. see him

  1315. face to

  1316. face.

  1317. Whoa.

  1318. Third

  1319. characteristic of

  1320. a faithful

  1321. church,

  1322. I think,

  1323. it's low

  1324. of itself

  1325. but much

  1326. of Christ.

  1327. Verse 10.

  1328. Jesus says,

  1329. I know

  1330. your deeds,

  1331. I know

  1332. that you

  1333. have endured

  1334. patiently.

  1335. You have

  1336. endured

  1337. patiently.

  1338. The

  1339. Philadelphian

  1340. church knew

  1341. about

  1342. suffering.

  1343. They knew

  1344. what it

  1345. was like

  1346. to be

  1347. ostracized

  1348. by your

  1349. community,

  1350. to be

  1351. opposed

  1352. by your

  1353. neighbors.

  1354. They knew

  1355. this and

  1356. yet they

  1357. still endured

  1358. patiently

  1359. through this.

  1360. Again,

  1361. it must

  1362. have been

  1363. so tempting

  1364. for them

  1365. to pack

  1366. it all

  1367. in.

  1368. It must

  1369. have been

  1370. so tempting

  1371. for them

  1372. to deny

  1373. Christ's

  1374. name,

  1375. to not

  1376. keep his

  1377. word,

  1378. and to

  1379. just forget

  1380. all about

  1381. it.

  1382. But they

  1383. endured.

  1384. And they

  1385. endured

  1386. patiently.

  1387. Why?

  1388. Because they

  1389. had a big

  1390. view of

  1391. who it

  1392. was they

  1393. served.

  1394. They

  1395. had a big

  1396. view of

  1397. who Christ

  1398. is.

  1399. Brothers and

  1400. sisters,

  1401. we have many

  1402. opportunities to

  1403. witness to our

  1404. non-Christian

  1405. society out

  1406. there.

  1407. But when

  1408. we do,

  1409. we will

  1410. face

  1411. persecution,

  1412. we will

  1413. face

  1414. discrimination,

  1415. there's

  1416. no two

  1417. ways about

  1418. it.

  1419. But we

  1420. are called

  1421. to endure

  1422. patiently.

  1423. And we

  1424. can do

  1425. that knowing

  1426. who it

  1427. is that we

  1428. serve.

  1429. Jesus

  1430. Christ,

  1431. the Holy

  1432. One,

  1433. the True

  1434. One,

  1435. the Keeper

  1436. of the

  1437. Key of

  1438. David,

  1439. the One

  1440. who will

  1441. keep us

  1442. through these

  1443. sufferings,

  1444. through these

  1445. times of

  1446. trials,

  1447. through these

  1448. times of

  1449. persecution.

  1450. That is

  1451. what's going

  1452. to make

  1453. us endure

  1454. patiently.

  1455. Not relying

  1456. upon ourselves,

  1457. but relying

  1458. leaning upon the

  1459. Almighty God

  1460. whom we

  1461. serve.

  1462. Philadelphian

  1463. church knew

  1464. this.

  1465. They kept

  1466. God's word.

  1467. They did not

  1468. deny Christ's

  1469. name.

  1470. They endured

  1471. patiently.

  1472. Why?

  1473. Because they

  1474. had a big

  1475. view of who

  1476. God was and

  1477. a low view

  1478. of who they

  1479. were.

  1480. And because

  1481. the Philadelphian

  1482. church was so

  1483. faithful to

  1484. Christ,

  1485. Christ would

  1486. show his

  1487. faithfulness to

  1488. them.

  1489. Read with me

  1490. in verse 10.

  1491. Let's read this

  1492. together.

  1493. Verse 10.

  1494. Since you have

  1495. kept my command

  1496. to endure

  1497. patiently,

  1498. I will also

  1499. keep you from

  1500. the hour of

  1501. trial that is

  1502. going to come

  1503. upon the

  1504. whole world

  1505. to test those

  1506. who live on

  1507. the earth.

  1508. Jesus will

  1509. show his

  1510. faithfulness to

  1511. his people by

  1512. protecting them,

  1513. by keeping

  1514. them through

  1515. the hour of

  1516. trial that

  1517. will one day

  1518. come.

  1519. We read about

  1520. this hour of

  1521. trial in

  1522. Mark 13 to

  1523. 2 Thessalonians

  1524. 2, but we

  1525. also read it in

  1526. Daniel 12,

    Daniel 12:1–9

  1527. verse 1 to 9.

  1528. I believe you've

  1529. just been through a

  1530. season, Daniel,

  1531. so I thought we'd go

  1532. here.

  1533. Daniel 12,

    Daniel 12:1–2

  1534. verses 1 to 2,

  1535. which says this,

  1536. there will be a

  1537. time of distress.

  1538. Such does not

  1539. happen from the

  1540. beginning of

  1541. nations until

  1542. then.

  1543. But at that

  1544. time your

  1545. people,

  1546. everyone whose

  1547. name is found

  1548. written in the

  1549. book, will be

  1550. delivered.

  1551. Multitudes

  1552. asleep in the

  1553. dust of the

  1554. earth will

  1555. awake, some to

  1556. everlasting life,

  1557. others to shame

  1558. and everlasting

  1559. contempt.

  1560. There is going to

  1561. be a terrible

  1562. time.

  1563. There is going to

  1564. be a terrible

  1565. time of great

  1566. testing.

  1567. But Christ

  1568. will keep and

  1569. protect those who

  1570. are faithful to

  1571. him through the

  1572. hour of trial.

  1573. Now maybe this

  1574. morning you're with

  1575. us and you

  1576. perhaps aren't a

  1577. Christian.

  1578. Maybe you're not a

  1579. believer or follower

  1580. of Christ and we

  1581. are so glad you're

  1582. here.

  1583. We really are.

  1584. We're delighted you

1585. have come with us to

  1586. worship with us, to

1587. be in church with us

  1588. this morning.

1589. But can I just say

  1590. this to you?

  1591. Have you thought

  1592. about what happens

  1593. after death?

  1594. Where are you

  1595. trying to find your

  1596. answers right now

  1597. to the big

  1598. questions in life?

  1599. And are you

  1600. trying to find the

  1601. answers in the

  1602. right place?

  1603. Are they satisfying

  1604. you, these answers?

  1605. Or is there

  1606. something missing?

  1607. Is there something

  1608. just not quite right

  1609. with you?

  1610. Well can I encourage

  1611. you to come and

  1612. study who Jesus

  1613. Christ is?

  1614. To come see who

  1615. the Bible says he

  1616. is, see who we

  1617. say he is, and

  1618. explore further what

  1619. Jesus is offering to

  1620. us.

  1621. Salvation.

  1622. Eternal satisfaction.

  1623. Eternal peace.

  1624. Because this time is

  1625. coming, this hour of

  1626. trial is coming.

  1627. And if you're not

  1628. found in Christ, when

1629. it comes to the final

  1630. judgment day, Jesus is

1631. not going to say to

  1632. you, I know you.

1633. And Jesus is not going

1634. to let you into the

  1635. heavenly kingdom.

  1636. Rather, face eternal

  1637. shame and everlasting

  1638. contempt.

  1639. Speak to the person

  1640. who brought you, speak

  1641. to me, I'm kicking

  1642. about.

1643. I'd be happy to talk

  1644. to you more about

  1645. that.

  1646. But let's go finally

  1647. to the fourth

  1648. characteristic of what

  1649. a faithful church

  1650. looks like.

1651. That has a low view

1652. of itself and a high

  1653. view of Christ.

  1654. Jesus says to this

  1655. church, I'm coming

1656. soon, so hold on to

  1657. what you have.

  1658. Verse 11.

1659. Hold on to what you

1660. have and you will be

  1661. victorious.

  1662. Hold on to your

  1663. faith.

1664. Hold on to my word.

  1665. Keep obeying my

  1666. commands.

  1667. Keep going.

  1668. Continue to remain

  1669. faithful and one

  1670. day you will take

  1671. the victor's crown.

  1672. But that's not

  1673. all.

  1674. That's not all.

  1675. That's amazing in

  1676. itself, isn't it?

  1677. But it keeps getting

  1678. better.

  1679. Because what is in

  1680. store for the one

  1681. who takes the

  1682. victor's crown?

  1683. Well, we keep

  1684. reading into verse

  1685. 12.

  1686. We see guaranteed

  1687. entry into the

  1688. messianic kingdom.

  1689. Guaranteed entry

  1690. into the kingdom of

  1691. God, the new

  1692. creation.

  1693. Even if the synagogue

  1694. door was slammed

1695. shut in the face of

  1696. the Philadelphian

  1697. church, they could be

  1698. assured that the

  1699. door to the kingdom

  1700. of heaven remains

  1701. wide open for them

  1702. to just walk

  1703. through because they

  1704. have remained

  1705. faithful.

  1706. Because remember

  1707. who holds the key

  1708. to the door?

  1709. Jesus Christ.

  1710. Who has the power

  1711. and authority to

  1712. open what he wants

  1713. to open, shut what

  1714. he wants to shut.

  1715. There is the Lord

  1716. Jesus Christ who

  1717. loves them and will

  1718. keep them.

  1719. But it goes even

  1720. further than that.

  1721. Come with me to

  1722. verse 12.

  1723. Let's read verse 12

  1724. together.

  1725. Him who overcomes,

  1726. I will make a pillar

1727. in the temple of my

  1728. God.

  1729. Never again will

  1730. they leave it.

  1731. Here we see,

  1732. read of Christ's

  1733. promise to this

  1734. church that this

  1735. once weak band of

  1736. faithful people who

  1737. are barred from

  1738. entering the synagogue,

  1739. barred from the

  1740. temporary temple on

  1741. earth, will one day

  1742. become a strong

  1743. pillar in the

  1744. eternal heavenly

  1745. kingdom of the

  1746. living God.

  1747. That's amazing.

  1748. We sang Cornerstone

  1749. this morning.

  1750. That's the anthem

  1751. for this church I

  1752. think.

  1753. Christ alone,

  1754. Cornerstone,

  1755. weak made strong in

  1756. the Saviour's love.

  1757. Through all he is

  1758. Lord, Lord of all.

  1759. That is the anthem

  1760. of the Philadelphian

  1761. church, weak made

  1762. strong.

  1763. Now of course,

  1764. they're not actually

  1765. going to become a

  1766. physical pillar.

1767. That's not much of an

  1768. incentive for us,

  1769. isn't it?

  1770. Stay faithful when you

  1771. become like that

  1772. pillar over there.

  1773. It's not much

  1774. least, is it?

  1775. But no, it's

  1776. symbolic here, okay?

  1777. It's symbolic.

  1778. It's symbolic of

  1779. something permanent,

  1780. something strong.

  1781. Okay?

  1782. Now we do read

  1783. later in Revelation,

  1784. there isn't actually

  1785. going to be a

  1786. physical temple in

  1787. the new creation.

  1788. The whole city is

  1789. going to be the

  1790. temple because that's

  1791. where God is going

  1792. to dwell with his

  1793. people.

  1794. But these images

  1795. emphasize the point

  1796. that those who

  1797. are victorious,

  1798. those who hold on

  1799. to what they have,

  1800. will dwell with God

  1801. permanently in the

  1802. new city of God.

  1803. This pillar is a

  1804. symbol of something

  1805. that's strong,

  1806. solid, heavy,

  1807. permanent.

  1808. Not like a peg of a

  1809. tent that's temporary

  1810. that can easily be

  1811. picked up again.

  1812. This is strong,

  1813. permanent structure.

  1814. This is an assurance

  1815. of their security in

  1816. Christ.

  1817. That those who are

  1818. victorious will come

  1819. into the presence of

  1820. God and dwell with

  1821. him there.

  1822. And they will never

  1823. leave his presence.

  1824. This once weak yet

  1825. faithful, this once

  1826. persecuted, suffering,

  1827. discriminated against

  1828. church, that the

  1829. last to get picked,

1830. the dad's army of the

  1831. followers of Christ,

  1832. will one day dwell

  1833. with their God

  1834. forever.

  1835. What a glorious

  1836. picture we have here.

1837. And just in case we

  1838. haven't quite got this

  1839. theme of assurance

  1840. and security, keep

  1841. reading in verse 12

  1842. where he says,

1843. I will write on them

1844. the name of my God,

1845. the name of the city

1846. of my God, the new

  1847. Jerusalem, which is

  1848. coming down out of

  1849. heaven from my God,

  1850. and I'll also write

1851. on him my new name.

  1852. Three names, three

  1853. seals of assurance,

  1854. that those who are

  1855. victorious belong to God

  1856. and are citizens of

  1857. this new city, this

  1858. new Jerusalem.

  1859. Here we have the

  1860. faithful, victorious

  1861. Christian who's able

1862. to say, I belong to

  1863. the God Almighty.

  1864. I am a citizen of the

1865. city of God and I am a

  1866. follower of Jesus Christ

1867. and I have his name on

  1868. my back.

  1869. Three names, thrice

  1870. sealed.

  1871. That is what awaits

  1872. this faithful yet weak

  1873. church.

1874. So maybe we feel like

  1875. we're not making a dent

  1876. on our city.

  1877. Maybe we are struggling.

  1878. Maybe we're weak.

  1879. But remember that God

  1880. has not chosen the

  1881. strongest, the wisest,

  1882. the coolest, or the

  1883. influential.

  1884. God has chosen the

  1885. weak, the foolish,

  1886. those who lack

  1887. influence.

1888. God has called the low

1889. so that no one may boast

  1890. except in the Lord.

1891. And God has called us

  1892. to remain faithful,

  1893. weak, yet faithful.

  1894. What does that look

  1895. like?

  1896. We keep God's word.

  1897. We do not deny

  1898. Christ's name.

  1899. We endure patiently

1900. and we hold on to

  1901. what we have because

1902. we know that he is

  1903. worth it.

1904. And like I said at

  1905. the beginning, we live

  1906. in an increasingly

  1907. God-less society.

  1908. This means we have

  1909. increasing opportunities

  1910. to make Christ known

  1911. to the people of

  1912. Edinburgh.

  1913. Brothers and

  1914. sisters, the door of

  1915. opportunity is wide

  1916. open for us.

  1917. The less Christian

  1918. society's morals and

  1919. morals become, the more

  1920. we will stand out.

1921. as we seek to live

  1922. holy and pure lives.

  1923. The more people

  1924. search for answers

  1925. in the wrong places,

  1926. the more chances we

  1927. have to point people

  1928. to Christ and whom

  1929. we find true

  1930. satisfaction, true

  1931. peace, true salvation.

1932. But as we do so,

  1933. remember who we serve,

  1934. the holy one,

  1935. the true one,

  1936. the keeper of the

  1937. key of David,

  1938. he yields absolute

  1939. power and authority,

  1940. the king of kings,

  1941. the lord of lords.

  1942. Jesus Christ loves

  1943. his people,

  1944. who will make those

  1945. who persecute us,

  1946. fall down before

  1947. his people.

  1948. Jesus Christ will

  1949. keep his people

  1950. from the hour of

  1951. trial, who will

  1952. make his people a

  1953. pillar in the

  1954. temple of God.

  1955. Jesus Christ who

  1956. will seal his

  1957. people's identity

  1958. and citizenship in

  1959. the new Jerusalem.

  1960. That is a Jesus

  1961. Christ who we serve.

  1962. That is who we're

  1963. disciples of.

  1964. That is who we

  1965. should have the big

  1966. picture of who

  1967. Jesus Christ is.

  1968. Jesus says to his

  1969. disciples in Matthew

  1970. 28,

  1971. all authority in

  1972. heaven and on

  1973. earth has been

  1974. given to me,

  1975. therefore go and

  1976. make disciples of

  1977. all nations,

  1978. baptizing them in

  1979. the name of the

  1980. Father and of the

  1981. Son and of the

  1982. Holy Spirit,

  1983. teaching them to be

  1984. everything I have

  1985. commanded you,

  1986. and surely I am

  1987. with you always to

1988. the very end of the

  1989. age.

  1990. Whoever has

  1991. ears, let them

  1992. hear what the

  1993. Spirit says to the

  1994. churches.

  1995. Let's pray together.

  1996. Let's pray.

  1997. Our mighty

  1998. heavenly Father,

  1999. Father, what an

  2000. awesome picture of

  2001. Christ we read in

  2002. Revelation.

  2003. What an awesome

  2004. picture we see of

  2005. him as the holy

  2006. one, the true one,

  2007. the one whose

  2008. absolute authority,

  2009. the one whose

  2010. authority cannot be

  2011. overruled.

  2012. Father, we pray

  2013. that as we study

  2014. the revelation,

2015. that as we look at

  2016. just who Jesus is,

  2017. we will be more,

  2018. we have more desire

  2019. to lean upon him,

  2020. to not lean upon

  2021. our own efforts as

2022. we seek to go and

  2023. make disciples of all

  2024. nations, but to

  2025. rather to trust in

  2026. him who has

  2027. absolute authority,

  2028. to trust in our

  2029. Lord and Saviour,

  2030. Jesus Christ.

  2031. Father, forgive us

  2032. for the times when

  2033. we do make this

  2034. about us.

  2035. Forgive us for the

  2036. times when we do

2037. make a big view of

  2038. ourselves, but a low

2039. view of you, who you

  2040. are.

  2041. And Father, we do

  2042. pray that through the

  2043. preaching of your

  2044. word, Lord, that you

2045. would help us to have

2046. a bigger view of who

2047. you are and a lower

2048. view of who we are,

2049. so that we can be a

  2050. faithful church who

  2051. goes out there, makes

  2052. Christ known, and

  2053. glorifies you with our

  2054. ministry and with our

  2055. lives.

  2056. Lord, we need your

2057. help for this, and we

2058. pray that you give it

  2059. to us.

  2060. In Christ's precious

  2061. name.

  2062. Amen.

  2063. Amen.

  2064. Amen.

  2065. Amen.

  2066. Amen.

  2067. Amen.

  2068. Amen.

  2069. Amen.

  2070. Amen.

  2071. Amen.

  2072. Amen.

  2073. Amen.

  2074. Amen.

  2075. Amen.

  2076. Amen.

  2077. Amen.

  2078. Amen.

  2079. Amen.

  2080. Amen.

  2081. Amen.
