  1. Well, please turn with me to Romans chapter 15. We're going to read verses 1 to 13.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  2. So Romans chapter 15 and verses 1 to 13.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  3. We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.

  4. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

  5. For even Christ did not please himself, but as it is written,

  6. the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

  7. For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us

  8. so that through endurance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.

  9. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves

  10. as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  11. Accept one another then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

  12. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth,

  13. to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs, so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy.

  14. As it is written,

  15. Again, it says in Deuteronomy, in Moses' song,

  16. And again, Psalm 117,

  17. And again, Isaiah says,

  18. Amen.

  19. Amen.

  20. Let's pray for a moment.

  21. Heavenly Father, these words of scripture were, we remember, words in a letter to your people in Rome.

  22. And for them, they were truth and nourishment and correction.

  23. They were, from the apostle, what they needed to hear.

  24. And no less so tonight, Lord, may these words be your words to us.

  25. For we need truth, your truth.

  26. We need to be nourished by your word.

  27. We need to be corrected.

  28. And taught and shaped.

  29. So by your spirit, our prayer is that you would speak.

  30. For Jesus' name's sake. Amen.

  31. Well, before I get into the text, I want to speak firstly of two introductory thoughts

  32. as we turn to the letter to the Romans.

  33. My guess is that after a summer break, you maybe can't remember what the rest of Romans is about.

  34. And so I want to just make two introductory remarks before we look at the text in a bit more detail.

  35. And the first is this.

  36. Romans, the letter to the Romans,

  37. for all its theological substance,

  38. and for all its rich and deep truth,

  39. and for all the intricacy and precision of its argument,

  40. and the way in which the apostle builds his case for the gospel as he writes to the church in Rome.

  41. For all of that, the letter to the Romans is,

  42. and we must remember this every time we believe it,

  43. it is every time we read it,

  44. it is for ordinary believers in Jesus Christ.

  45. Romans can become labeled in our minds,

  46. even if not by our mouths,

  47. as a letter of the New Testament to be avoided

  48. because it's theologically complicated,

  49. or because it is full of truth

  50. and not so full as some of the other letters

  51. in terms of practical advice for living.

  52. But Romans was not written for theologians or for academics,

  53. it was written for believers,

  54. just like you and me.

  55. It was written for people who loved Christ

  56. and who formed a church fellowship in the city of Rome

  57. way back in the earliest days of the New Testament church.

  58. I love to remember,

  59. when I turned to the letter to the Romans,

  60. a true instance that took place some 30 years ago,

  61. where a pastor here in the city of Edinburgh

  62. was preaching through the letter to the Romans

  63. to a large Sunday evening congregation week by week.

  64. And after one of the services in his series on Romans,

  65. an academic student came to the pastor,

  66. having never been in the church before,

  67. and said to him,

  68. now I really think you ought to avoid preaching

  69. as in-depth and as deeply as that sermon was.

  70. If you want ordinary people to understand what you're saying,

  71. I really think you should concentrate on more simple things.

  72. Can you imagine the embarrassment of it?

  73. This 19 or 20-year-old student

  74. telling the experienced pastor this.

  75. And the pastor, because he was kind,

  76. listened for a while.

  77. And after some minutes of listening to this,

  78. he said, well, I think you're quite, quite wrong.

  79. Romans may have stretched you

  80. beyond what you can understand,

  81. but see that man sitting over there?

  82. He's a plumber,

  83. and he loves listening to sermons in Romans.

  84. And that lady over there,

  85. she's a single mum,

  86. and she's been drinking it in Sunday night by Sunday night.

  87. And you've never been here before,

  88. and you have the nerve to comment,

  89. I suggest you come for another 10 weeks and listen,

  90. and then we'll chat again.

  91. That was his advice,

  92. because Romans is for ordinary believers.

  93. And the experience of the church

  94. down through the centuries is that

  95. when the letter to the Romans

  96. is preached and taught

  97. as God's word for ordinary folks,

  98. normal believers are captured

  99. and grasped by this divine word in this letter.

  100. And their lives are mastered

  101. by the gospel that Romans contains.

  102. This letter is for you.

  103. It is for your church here,

  104. a local fellowship of God's people.

  105. It is not primarily for anything else.

  106. That's my first introductory thought.

  107. My second introductory thought is this,

  108. and here we turn to the section of Romans

  109. that we find ourselves in tonight.

  110. The section begins at the beginning of chapter 14,

  111. and you may remember,

  112. if you've looked at this in earlier weeks,

  113. that Paul is speaking about the weak and the strong.

  114. The particular issue in his day

  115. was whether or not believers should eat meat

  116. which had already been sacrificed to pagan idols.

  117. And some, the strong, as Paul called them,

  118. said, yes, it's fine, it's just meat.

  119. It doesn't matter a hoot what it's been sacrificed to.

  120. It's meat, it's food provided by God.

  121. And idols are just dead bits of stone and metal and wood anyway,

  122. and if the meat has been sacrificed to them,

  123. well, it's only been sacrificed to nothing,

  124. and so I'm quite happy to eat it and to enjoy it.

  125. The strong.

  126. But the weak found themselves thinking,

  127. no, no, no, I just couldn't.

  128. I couldn't eat that meat.

  129. Once it has been sacrificed to a pagan idol

  130. and used in that way

  131. and been involved in the lives

  132. of those who are worshipping false gods,

  133. it wouldn't be right for me

  134. as a follower of the Lord Jesus

  135. to eat that food,

  136. to associate myself with it.

  137. I couldn't possibly,

  138. I couldn't bring myself to eat it.

  139. They, to use Paul's language,

  140. were the weak.

  141. Slightly more full of tender conscience,

  142. perhaps, we might think.

  143. Slightly more afraid

  144. to take steps into the unknown.

  145. Slightly more fearful

  146. that they would be doing something

  147. that might upset God.

  148. They were weak,

  149. weak in their faith,

  150. unable to see as yet

  151. that all good things are given by God

  152. for us to enjoy.

  153. It's fine.

  154. Eat the meat,

  155. as their brothers and sisters,

  156. their strong brothers and sisters,

  157. were saying.

  158. And so there was,

  159. at that time,

  160. a very obvious difference of opinion

  161. over this particular issue.

  162. And Paul is writing

  163. to this local community of believers

  164. in Rome

  165. to help them sort this difficulty out.

  166. And the danger

  167. in becoming either the weak

  168. or the strong,

  169. one of the dangers in our churches

  170. is that perversely and paradoxically,

  171. the weak are often,

  172. in reality,

  173. as strong as an ox.

  174. Now let me explain

  175. what I mean by that.

  176. The issue in their day was

  177. whether to eat meat sacrificed to an idol.

  178. I shouldn't think

  179. that many of us

  180. have been faced

  181. with that particular difficulty

  182. in recent months or years.

  183. But we will have been faced

  184. with innumerable,

  185. comparable issues.

  186. Whether or not

  187. we should dress

  188. in a particular way

  189. to come to church

  190. and meet with our brothers and sisters

  191. on a Sunday.

  192. Whether or not

  193. believers should

  194. drink alcohol.

  195. Whether or not

  196. believers should

  197. pop into Sainsbury's

  198. on the way back from church

  199. or not.

  200. Whether or not

  201. you should

  202. feel free

  203. to go to the

  204. baptismal service

  205. of someone

  206. where the

  207. practice of baptism

  208. is different

  209. from what you hold

  210. in your particular church.

  211. Or

  212. much more painful

  213. and much more

  214. difficult

  215. and real

  216. in people's lives

  217. if I have

  218. a non-Christian

  219. family member,

  220. my brother

  221. or sister

  222. or son

  223. or cousin

  224. and they

  225. are

  226. getting married

  227. to somebody

  228. who

  229. is

  230. a Muslim,

  231. should I go

  232. to the wedding?

  233. The strong

  234. will say,

  235. well yes,

  236. he's your cousin.

  237. Go to the wedding.

  238. Show him that you love him.

  239. He knows

  240. you're not a Muslim

  241. and that you're not

  242. wanting him

  243. to follow this

  244. religious route

  245. but he's your

  246. cousin.

  247. Go to the wedding.

  248. Whereas the weak

  249. would say,

  250. no, no,

  251. I couldn't.

  252. I couldn't.

  253. I just couldn't

  254. take part in it.

  255. There is no right

  256. or wrong

  257. but

  258. there is a very

  259. obvious difference

  260. of opinion,

  261. isn't there?

  262. And therefore

  263. a great potential

  264. for believers

  265. even within

  266. one fellowship

  267. to find themselves

  268. on different

  269. pages

  270. and pulling

  271. in different

  272. directions

  273. over such

  274. an issue

  275. as this.

  276. Now,

  277. in a church

  278. fellowship,

  279. the weak,

  280. the person

  281. who has a

  282. tender conscience,

  283. the person

  284. who says,

  285. no, no, no,

  286. we mustn't

  287. be selling

  288. books

  289. on a Sunday.

  290. That is

  291. some kind

  292. of business

  293. matter

  294. that shouldn't

  295. take place

  296. on a Sunday.

  297. Whereas the

  298. strong believer

  299. will say,

  300. nonsense,

  301. we want to

  302. sell all

  303. the Christian

  304. books that

  305. we can

  306. possibly sell

  307. and get

  308. the good

  309. news of

  310. the gospel

  311. and good

  312. teaching from

  313. the Bible

  314. out into

  315. the lives

  316. and the minds

  317. and the hearts

  318. of all who

  319. are in our

  320. church.

  321. But the weak

  322. says,

  323. no, no,

  324. I'll be offended,

  325. I'll be hurt

  326. if you do that.

  327. I couldn't

  328. possibly,

  329. I might have

  330. to leave

  331. the church.

  332. And so,

  333. the weak

  334. can become

  335. as strong

  336. as an ox

  337. because sometimes

  338. it only takes

  339. two or three

  340. of the weak

  341. to effectively

  342. hold a whole

  343. fellowship

  344. to ransom

  345. and to actually

  346. be strong

  347. enough to

  348. force their

  349. opinion

  350. on everybody

  351. and to be

  352. very strong

  353. indeed.

  354. So,

  355. that's a

  356. great danger

  357. when we're

  358. speaking about

  359. the weak

  360. and the

  361. strong.

  362. And that's

  363. my other

  364. introductory

  365. thought

  366. this evening.

  367. So,

  368. that's the

  369. kind of

  370. issue

  371. that is

  372. being dealt

  373. with here.

  374. That,

  375. by way of

  376. introduction,

  377. and so

  378. now to

  379. the text.

  380. And in

  381. chapter 15

  382. verses 1

  383. to 13,

  384. Paul is

  385. really wrapping

  386. up his

  387. thinking about

  388. this area.

  389. Most of

  390. his teaching

  391. on this

  392. topic is

  393. done in

  394. chapter 14.

  395. And in

  396. chapter 15,

  397. he is

  398. wrapping

  399. things up.

  400. And having

  401. had two

  402. introductory

  403. thoughts as

  404. my first

  405. point,

  406. what I want

  407. as my second

  408. point this

  409. evening is

  410. to draw

  411. your attention

  412. to three

  413. enduring

  414. and central

  415. fundamentals

  416. of the

  417. gospel.

  418. just look

  419. at how

  420. Paul

  421. concludes

  422. this part

  423. of his

  424. letter.

  425. He takes

  426. the believers

  427. right back

  428. to basic

  429. fundamentals.

  430. The word

  431. fundamental,

  432. by the way,

  433. is a very,

  434. very good

  435. and positive

  436. word.

  437. And what

  438. Paul does

  439. in verses

  440. 1 to 6

  441. is he

  442. reminds them

  443. of the

  444. cross,

  445. the

  446. scriptures,

  447. and the

  448. Holy Spirit.

  449. Three

  450. absolutely

  451. core

  452. Christian

  453. beliefs

  454. around which

  455. both the

  456. weak and

  457. the strong

  458. can and

  459. must unite

  460. in any

  461. local church.

  462. A

  463. fundamental

  464. is

  465. a

  466. necessary

  467. base

  468. foundation

  469. is

  470. the word

  471. fundamental

  472. or

  473. fundamentalist

  474. we understand

  475. in our

  476. culture

  477. is now

  478. seen

  479. almost

  480. entirely

  481. negatively.

  482. But you

  483. do not

  484. have a

  485. negative

  486. opinion,

  487. for example,

  488. of the

  489. fundamental

  490. importance

  491. of the

  492. foundation

  493. that sits

  494. underneath

  495. your house.

  496. It is

  497. absolutely

  498. fundamentally

  499. important

  500. that that

  501. foundation

  502. on which

  503. your

  504. house

  505. or

  506. flat

  507. or

  508. wherever

  509. you

  510. live

  511. sits

  512. is

  513. strong

  514. and

  515. well

  516. built.

  517. And it

  518. is the

  519. necessary

  520. base

  521. of the

  522. cross

  523. of Christ

  524. in the

  525. thinking

  526. of the

  527. believer

  528. that Paul

  529. takes these

  530. people to

  531. in verses

  532. 1 to

  533. 3.

  534. And this

  535. is very

  536. costly

  537. for us

  538. to hear

  539. properly.

  540. we who

  541. are

  542. strong

  543. ought

  544. to

  545. bear

  546. with

  547. the

  548. failings

  549. of

  550. the

  551. weak

  552. and

  553. not

  554. to

  555. please

  556. ourselves.

  557. That is

  558. with the

  559. failings

  560. of the

  561. genuinely

  562. weak,

  563. not the

  564. weak who

  565. are actually

  566. just being

  567. like strong

  568. bulldozers

  569. in the

  570. church.

  571. We who

  572. are strong

  573. ought to

  574. bear

  575. with the

  576. failings

  577. of the

  578. weak.

  579. Each

  580. of us,

  581. whatever

  582. our view,

  583. should

  584. please his

  585. neighbor

  586. for his

  587. good.

  588. That is,

  589. you and

  590. how you

  591. are doing

  592. in your

  593. faith and

  594. in your

  595. life,

  596. that is

  597. much more

  598. important to

  599. me than

  600. how I am

  601. doing.

  602. Each of

  603. us should

  604. please his

  605. neighbor for

  606. his good,

  607. to build

  608. him up,

  609. because,

  610. and here's

  611. the cross,

  612. even Christ

  613. did not

  614. please himself,

  615. but as

  616. it is

  617. written,

  618. the insults

  619. of those

  620. who insult

  621. you have

  622. fallen on

  623. me.

  624. Remember

  625. Jesus hanging

  626. on the

  627. cross and

  628. how the

  629. passers-by,

  630. as if it

  631. wasn't bad

  632. enough that

  633. he was

  634. hanging there,

  635. the only

  636. innocent human

  637. being to

  638. have ever

  639. walked the

  640. face of

  641. the earth,

  642. being punished

  643. unjustly,

  644. with no

  645. mercy,

  646. as if that

  647. wasn't bad

  648. enough.

  649. He then

  650. had the

  651. insults of

  652. the passers-by

  653. pouring out of

  654. their mouths

  655. into his

  656. ears.

  657. some leader

  658. you.

  659. If you

  660. were up

  661. to

  662. anything,

  663. if you

  664. are even

  665. half of

  666. what you're

  667. cracked up

  668. to be,

  669. then come

  670. down off

  671. the cross

  672. and rescue

  673. yourself,

  674. and then we

  675. might believe

  676. in you.

  677. Talk about

  678. kicking a man

  679. when he is

  680. down,

  681. and talk

  682. about the

  683. slicing and

  684. stabbing effect

  685. of wicked

  686. words.

  687. And Paul

  688. says,

  689. well,

  690. if that

  691. was how

  692. the Lord

  693. bore these

  694. insults for

  695. us,

  696. then in our

  697. fellowships

  698. together,

  699. are we not

  700. willing for

  701. the sake of

  702. our neighbor

  703. to look out

  704. for what

  705. is good

  706. and up-building

  707. for him,

  708. regardless of

  709. what people say

  710. about me

  711. and my

  712. position,

  713. whether it's

  714. one of

  715. weakness or

  716. strength in

  717. the two

  718. categories,

  719. what people

  720. say about

  721. me doesn't

  722. matter.

  723. But what I

  724. do for my

  725. neighbor matters.

  726. It matters

  727. for him.

  728. And that is

  729. the cross

  730. engrafted

  731. into the

  732. attitudes and

  733. the lives

  734. of Christian

  735. believers in

  736. a church

  737. family like

  738. this one.

  739. That's the

  740. first fundamental,

  741. and it's a

  742. very costly

  743. thing to hear,

  744. isn't it?

  745. Because it's

  746. telling us

  747. to bear

  748. the scorn,

  749. to bear

  750. the comment,

  751. to bear

  752. the insult,

  753. following in

  754. the steps

  755. of our

  756. Savior,

  757. the Lord

  758. Jesus.

  759. The second

  760. fundamental is

  761. in verse 4,

  762. and it is the

  763. core truth

  764. of the

  765. scriptures.

  766. pillars.

  767. And here,

  768. if you like,

  769. another

  770. illustration to

  771. remind us that

  772. fundamentals are

  773. very good

  774. things.

  775. A fundamental

  776. thing is like

  777. a central

  778. core around

  779. which everything

  780. else is

  781. built.

  782. Think, if you

  783. like, of a

  784. spiral staircase.

  785. Now, the

  786. staircase, the

  787. thing that you

  788. step on to

  789. get down the

  790. stairs, are

  791. the wooden

  792. steps themselves.

  793. But the

  794. vital,

  795. fundamental

  796. feature of

  797. that staircase

  798. is the

  799. metal core

  800. that goes up

  801. the middle to

  802. which all the

  803. steps are

  804. attached,

  805. isn't it?

  806. Now, that is

  807. what the

  808. place of the

  809. scriptures is

  810. like in the

  811. life of the

  812. church.

  813. Look at

  814. verse 4,

  815. as Paul

  816. takes them to

  817. this topic.

  818. 4,

  819. everything that

  820. was written in

  821. the past, in

  822. the Old

  823. Testament

  824. scriptures, was

  825. written to

  826. teach us.

  827. So that

  828. through endurance

  829. and the

  830. encouragement of

  831. the scriptures,

  832. we might have

  833. hope.

  834. What a wonderful

  835. thing for him

  836. to say when

  837. he has just

  838. taught them

  839. about the

  840. Christian

  841. prospect of

  842. bearing the

  843. pain of

  844. others'

  845. comments and

  846. abuse and

  847. cutting words

  848. and all the

  849. costliness of

  850. that.

  851. What a

  852. wonderful thing

  853. for him to

  854. say that the

  855. fundamental

  856. Christian help

  857. for you,

  858. bearing such

  859. pain and

  860. cost, is

  861. the teaching

  862. of the

  863. scriptures.

  864. Everything that

  865. was written in

  866. the past was

  867. written not

  868. only for the

  869. people then,

  870. but to teach

  871. us.

  872. Now, he is

  873. saying to the

  874. Romans.

  875. And it's

  876. written to

  877. teach us

  878. so that

  879. through

  880. endurance and

  881. the encouragement

  882. of the

  883. scriptures, you

  884. might have

  885. hope to

  886. go on

  887. where there

  888. are fights

  889. and factions

  890. and differences

  891. of opinion in

  892. the fellowship.

  893. Have hope and

  894. encouragement.

  895. Keep going as

  896. brothers and

  897. sisters because

  898. week by week

  899. by week and

  900. day by day,

  901. the scriptures

  902. will give you

  903. that hope.

  904. hope.

  905. They will,

  906. when you are

  907. enduring the

  908. pain of

  909. standing for

  910. the Lord

  911. Jesus, they

  912. will encourage

  913. you and point

  914. you to the

  915. future.

  916. That's the

  917. second fundamental

  918. then, the

  919. cross and the

  920. scriptures, and

  921. thirdly, the

  922. spirit, verses

  923. five and six.

  924. may the

  925. God who

  926. gives endurance

  927. and encouragement

  928. from the

  929. scriptures, as

  930. he's just

  931. said, also

  932. give you a

  933. spirit of

  934. unity among

  935. yourselves as

  936. you follow

  937. Christ Jesus

  938. so that with

  939. one heart

  940. and mouth

  941. you may

  942. glorify the

  943. God and

  944. Father of

  945. our Lord

  946. Jesus Christ.

  947. Now, bear

  948. with me here.

  949. We're going to

  950. look at a few

  951. verses throughout

  952. the New Testament.

  953. Now, when a

  954. preacher does

  955. this, I can

  956. have an allergic

  957. reaction to

  958. looking at five

  959. or six different

  960. cross-references in

  961. the Bible, but

  962. tonight I want

  963. to risk you

  964. having that

  965. allergic reaction

  966. to really

  967. persuade you

  968. that this

  969. plea for

  970. united thinking

  971. born by the

  972. Holy Spirit

  973. is found

  974. everywhere in

  975. the New

  976. Testament

  977. scriptures.

  978. So look

  979. first of all

  980. with me at

  981. Romans chapter

    Romans 12:16

  982. 12, verse

  983. 16.

  984. You can

  985. manage that

  986. one.

  987. It's just

  988. back one

  989. page.

  990. Romans 12,

    Romans 12:16

  991. verse 16.

  992. Live in

  993. harmony with

  994. one another.

  995. In other

  996. words, as he

  997. explains, do

  998. not be

  999. proud, but

  1000. be willing

  1001. to associate

  1002. with people

  1003. of low

  1004. position.

  1005. Do not

  1006. be conceited.

  1007. Live in

  1008. harmony with

  1009. one another

  1010. and appeal

  1011. for unity

  1012. with a very

  1013. practical

  1014. implication

  1015. against

  1016. conceit

  1017. and pride.

  1018. Now, you

  1019. can manage

  1020. the next

  1021. cross-reference

  1022. too because

  1023. it's just

  1024. one page

  1025. in the other

  1026. direction.

  1027. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:10

  1028. chapter 1,

  1029. verse 10.

  1030. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:10

  1031. chapter 1,

  1032. verse 10.

  1033. These are

  1034. very strong

  1035. commandments.

  1036. I appeal

  1037. to you,

  1038. brothers,

  1039. in the name

  1040. of our

  1041. Lord Jesus

  1042. Christ,

  1043. that all

  1044. of you

  1045. agree with

  1046. one another

  1047. so that there

  1048. may be no

  1049. divisions among

  1050. you and that

  1051. you may be

  1052. perfectly united

  1053. in mind and

  1054. thought.

  1055. that's a

  1056. very high

  1057. and lofty

  1058. appeal,

  1059. isn't it,

  1060. to Christian

  1061. people?

  1062. But it's

  1063. very strong

  1064. and it was

  1065. very necessary

  1066. for the

  1067. Corinthian

  1068. church.

  1069. Keep going

  1070. forward to

  1071. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  1072. chapter 13,

  1073. the famous

  1074. love chapter

  1075. and to

  1076. verse 11.

  1077. These

  1078. Corinthians

  1079. who were

  1080. so puffed

  1081. up and

  1082. immature and

  1083. full of

  1084. themselves and

  1085. their gifts.

  1086. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 13:11

  1087. chapter 13

  1088. verse 11.

  1089. When I

  1090. was a

  1091. child,

  1092. I talked

  1093. like a

  1094. child,

  1095. I thought

  1096. like a

  1097. child,

  1098. I reasoned

  1099. like a

  1100. child.

  1101. When I

  1102. became a

  1103. man,

  1104. I put

  1105. childish

  1106. ways

  1107. behind me.

  1108. We went

  1109. for a walk

  1110. this afternoon

  1111. with two

  1112. lovely little

  1113. girls aged

  1114. about five

  1115. and three

  1116. and they

  1117. were dressed

  1118. in their

  1119. matching

  1120. pretty

  1121. dresses like

  1122. something out

  1123. of a

  1124. postcard

  1125. from the

  1126. southern

  1127. states of

  1128. the United

  1129. States of

  1130. America

  1131. and they

  1132. looked

  1133. angelic

  1134. as they

  1135. wandered

  1136. along the

  1137. path and

  1138. the dappled

  1139. light of

  1140. the trees

  1141. and they

  1142. were arguing

  1143. the whole

  1144. time.

  1145. And when

  1146. we got

  1147. home,

  1148. they were

  1149. arguing about

  1150. whose was

  1151. the dolphin

  1152. and whose

  1153. was the

  1154. frog and

  1155. they never

  1156. stopped.

  1157. They argued

  1158. as little

  1159. children

  1160. can,

  1161. morning,

  1162. noon and

  1163. night.

  1164. And what

  1165. that verse

  1166. in 1

  1167. Corinthians

  1168. 13 is

  1169. saying to

  1170. Christians is

  1171. grow up,

  1172. grow up

  1173. and stop

  1174. bickering

  1175. and arguing.

  1176. It's a very

  1177. strong appeal.

  1178. Look at

  1179. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:3

  1180. chapter 4

  1181. verse 3.

  1182. He's still

  1183. awake.

  1184. I'll keep

  1185. going with

  1186. another one

  1187. or two

  1188. until I

  1189. see someone

  1190. convulsing.

  1191. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:3

  1192. chapter 4

  1193. verse 3.

  1194. Make

  1195. every effort.

  1196. It's all

  1197. very strong

  1198. language,

  1199. full of

  1200. superlatives.

  1201. Make

  1202. every effort

  1203. to keep

  1204. the unity

  1205. of the

  1206. spirit

  1207. through the

  1208. bond of

  1209. peace.

  1210. Now if

  1211. you flick

  1212. back to

  1213. Romans

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  1214. chapter 15,

  1215. our text

  1216. tonight,

  1217. and look

  1218. at the

  1219. verse there,

  1220. Paul says,

  1221. may God

  1222. give you

  1223. a spirit

  1224. of unity.

  1225. Now that,

  1226. what can

  1227. that mean

  1228. other than

  1229. a spirit

  1230. of unity

  1231. born by

  1232. the Holy

  1233. Spirit?

  1234. He's not

  1235. saying may

  1236. God give

  1237. you a

  1238. kind of

  1239. transcendental

  1240. feeling of

  1241. peace

  1242. washing over

  1243. you as

  1244. you sit

  1245. and have

  1246. your coffee

  1247. together.

  1248. It's not

  1249. that kind

  1250. of thing.

  1251. This is

  1252. a work

  1253. of God

  1254. in the

  1255. hearts

  1256. and minds

  1257. of believers

  1258. where some

  1259. are weak

  1260. and some

  1261. are strong

  1262. and never

  1263. the twain

  1264. shall meet.

  1265. May God

  1266. by his

  1267. spirit,

  1268. and here

  1269. it is in

  1270. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:3

  1271. chapter 4

  1272. verse 3,

  1273. make every

  1274. effort to

  1275. keep the

  1276. unity of

  1277. the Spirit,

  1278. capital S,

  1279. through the

  1280. bond of

  1281. peace.

  1282. Philippians

    Philippians 2:2

  1283. chapter 2

  1284. verse 2,

  1285. make my

  1286. joy complete

  1287. by being

  1288. like-minded,

  1289. having the

  1290. same love,

  1291. being one

  1292. in spirit

  1293. and purpose.

  1294. Colossians

    Colossians 3:14

  1295. chapter 3

  1296. verse 14,

  1297. this one

  1298. and one

  1299. other to

  1300. make my

  1301. point.

  1302. Colossians

    Colossians 3:14

  1303. chapter 3

  1304. verse 14,

  1305. and over

  1306. all these

  1307. virtues,

  1308. put on

  1309. love which

  1310. binds them

  1311. all together

  1312. in perfect

  1313. unity.

  1314. And finally,

  1315. not just

  1316. Paul, but

  1317. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1318. chapter 3,

  1319. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3:8

  1320. chapter 3

  1321. verse 8,

  1322. finally,

  1323. all of

  1324. you,

  1325. live in

  1326. harmony

  1327. with one

  1328. another,

  1329. be sympathetic,

  1330. love as

  1331. brothers,

  1332. be compassionate

  1333. and humble,

  1334. live in

  1335. harmony

  1336. with one

  1337. another.

  1338. another.

  1339. So,

  1340. this is a

  1341. very widespread

  1342. New Testament

  1343. command,

  1344. isn't it?

  1345. I'm sure

  1346. you're glad

  1347. I didn't,

  1348. but I could

  1349. have done

  1350. as many

  1351. references

  1352. again.

  1353. The Spirit,

  1354. the Holy

  1355. Spirit of

  1356. God,

  1357. is the

  1358. one who

  1359. works

  1360. amongst

  1361. and within

  1362. his people

  1363. to bring

  1364. about a

  1365. God-given

  1366. unity,

  1367. even where

  1368. there are

  1369. very different

  1370. opinions about

  1371. certain issues.

  1372. Paul is not

  1373. papering over

  1374. the cracks

  1375. here.

  1376. Why?

  1377. He's devoted

  1378. a chapter and

  1379. a half of

  1380. his letter

  1381. to dealing

  1382. with how

  1383. to cope

  1384. with the

  1385. strong

  1386. differences

  1387. of opinion

  1388. in the

  1389. fellowship.

  1390. But the

  1391. Holy Spirit

  1392. is the

  1393. one who

  1394. brings about

  1395. a harmony

  1396. and a

  1397. unity

  1398. within the

  1399. church

  1400. that will,

  1401. verse 6,

  1402. lead to

  1403. us glorifying

  1404. God with

  1405. one heart

  1406. and one

  1407. mouth.

  1408. We may

  1409. have all

  1410. sorts of

  1411. different opinions

  1412. flowing out of

  1413. our mouths

  1414. when it comes

  1415. to shopping

  1416. and dressing

  1417. and sport

  1418. and goodness

  1419. knows what

  1420. else,

  1421. Sabbaths and

  1422. baptisms and

  1423. special days

  1424. and feasts

  1425. and new

  1426. moons and

  1427. all the rest

  1428. of it.

  1429. But with

  1430. one mouth

  1431. together we

  1432. praise the

  1433. God and

  1434. Father of

  1435. our Lord

  1436. Jesus Christ

  1437. who by

  1438. his Spirit

  1439. unites

  1440. believers

  1441. around the

  1442. gospel.

  1443. If I can

  1444. return to

  1445. the world

  1446. of the

  1447. Christian

  1448. Union and

  1449. the

  1450. university,

  1451. that is

  1452. what to

  1453. pray for

  1454. Christian

  1455. unions.

  1456. They come

  1457. to the

  1458. Christian

  1459. Union from

  1460. all manner

  1461. of different

  1462. evangelical

  1463. churches

  1464. and together

  1465. these Christian

  1466. students must

  1467. learn to

  1468. form a

  1469. united,

  1470. clear witness

  1471. to the

  1472. gospel of

  1473. Jesus Christ.

  1474. That is why

  1475. UCCF, the

  1476. Christian

  1477. Unions, or

  1478. IVF as some

  1479. of you will

  1480. have known

  1481. it in

  1482. decades gone

  1483. by, has

  1484. consistently

  1485. taken people

  1486. to the

  1487. cross, to

  1488. the scriptures

  1489. and to the

  1490. work of the

  1491. Holy Spirit

  1492. bringing new

  1493. life to

  1494. the believer

  1495. and uniting

  1496. believers

  1497. together in

  1498. Christ.

  1499. These things

  1500. Paul is

  1501. saying here,

  1502. these things,

  1503. if primary

  1504. and remembered,

  1505. will bring

  1506. your fellowship

  1507. to honor the

  1508. Lord Jesus

  1509. Christ, whatever

  1510. differences of

  1511. strength and

  1512. weakness are

  1513. found among

  1514. you.

  1515. And there

  1516. will be many

  1517. among you,

  1518. even a

  1519. number like

  1520. this.

  1521. Why, we can

  1522. tell by looking

  1523. at each

  1524. other that

  1525. that would be

  1526. the case.

  1527. So a

  1528. necessary base,

  1529. the gospel of

  1530. the cross,

  1531. a central

  1532. core, and a

  1533. spiral staircase,

  1534. the scriptures,

  1535. and a

  1536. primary rule.

  1537. Make every

  1538. effort to be

  1539. united amongst

  1540. yourselves as

  1541. you follow

  1542. Christ Jesus.

  1543. Three enduring

  1544. and central

  1545. fundamentals.

  1546. What a

  1547. wonderful way

  1548. to wrap up

  1549. his conversation

  1550. about the

  1551. strong and

  1552. the weak.

  1553. Point one was

  1554. two introductory

  1555. words.

  1556. Point two was

  1557. three enduring

  1558. fundamentals.

  1559. Point three is

  1560. one world

  1561. summoned to

  1562. praise.

  1563. Here is

  1564. Paul's

  1565. final

  1566. writing on

  1567. this topic.

  1568. Verses

  1569. seven and

  1570. eight and

  1571. the first

  1572. half of

  1573. verse nine

  1574. make the

  1575. point that

  1576. one world

  1577. is summoned

  1578. to praise.

  1579. He says in

  1580. verse seven,

  1581. accept one

  1582. another then,

  1583. just as

  1584. Christ accepted

  1585. you.

  1586. Now, why did

  1587. Christ accept

  1588. you?

  1589. He accepted

  1590. you in

  1591. order to

  1592. bring praise

  1593. to God

  1594. because I

  1595. tell you that

  1596. Christ has

  1597. become a

  1598. servant of

  1599. the Jews,

  1600. the people of

  1601. God whom he

  1602. came to,

  1603. on behalf of

  1604. God's truth,

  1605. in order to

  1606. confirm the

  1607. promises made

  1608. to the

  1609. patriarchs so

  1610. that the

  1611. Gentiles may

  1612. glorify God.

  1613. See what

  1614. Paul is saying?

  1615. Christ came

  1616. to the

  1617. people of

  1618. God,

  1619. the Old

  1620. Testament

  1621. people of

  1622. God as

  1623. their Messiah

  1624. to confirm

  1625. the promises

  1626. made to the

  1627. patriarchs and

  1628. he came to

  1629. them so

  1630. that the

  1631. Gentile world

  1632. with them

  1633. would honour

  1634. and praise

  1635. the living

  1636. God and

  1637. glorify him

  1638. for his

  1639. mercy.

  1640. All of this

  1641. unity, all of

  1642. this working

  1643. out how to

  1644. cope with the

  1645. weak and the

  1646. strong in

  1647. our fellowship

  1648. is because

  1649. God wants

  1650. there to be

  1651. one voice

  1652. of praise

  1653. from all

  1654. the nations

  1655. throughout the

  1656. world to

  1657. the praise

  1658. of his

  1659. son Jesus.

  1660. That's his

  1661. point in

  1662. verses 7

  1663. and 8.

  1664. Accept one

  1665. another

  1666. because one

  1667. world is

  1668. summoned to

  1669. praise.

  1670. And then

  1671. he effectively

  1672. makes the

  1673. same point

  1674. in verses

  1675. 9 to

  1676. 12 all

  1677. over again

  1678. by very

  1679. beautifully

  1680. drawing from

  1681. the Old

  1682. Testament

  1683. scriptures

  1684. this theme

  1685. of one

  1686. world being

  1687. summoned to

  1688. praise.

  1689. Look at

  1690. Psalm 18

  1691. he says to

  1692. them.

  1693. Here is Paul

  1694. preaching from

  1695. the Old

  1696. Testament

  1697. scriptures.

  1698. And here

  1699. is Paul

  1700. giving several

  1701. cross-references

  1702. which gives

  1703. me hope.

  1704. So here he's

  1705. saying from

  1706. Psalm 18

  1707. the song

  1708. of the

  1709. king

  1710. therefore I

  1711. will praise

  1712. you among

  1713. the Gentiles

  1714. who would

  1715. ever have

  1716. thought it.

  1717. The Old

  1718. Testament people

  1719. were used to

  1720. praising God

  1721. among their

  1722. own people

  1723. but here he's

  1724. saying I will

  1725. praise you

  1726. among the

  1727. Gentiles.

  1728. And then he

  1729. goes to

  1730. Jishoraname

  1731. to Moses

  1732. song rejoice

  1733. O Gentiles

  1734. with his

  1735. people.

  1736. It was

  1737. always God's

  1738. purpose to

  1739. have one

  1740. world summoned

  1741. to praise.

  1742. That was

  1743. his purpose

  1744. in calling

  1745. out his

  1746. covenant

  1747. people.

  1748. Then his

  1749. third reference

  1750. praise the

  1751. Lord all

  1752. you Gentiles

  1753. again in the

  1754. Psalms 117

  1755. this time.

  1756. Praise the

  1757. Lord all

  1758. you Gentiles

  1759. and sing

  1760. praises to

  1761. him all

  1762. you peoples.

  1763. and finally

  1764. in Isaiah

  1765. David's

  1766. heir

  1767. King

  1768. David

  1769. the great

  1770. king of

  1771. God's

  1772. people

  1773. King

  1774. David

  1775. his heir

  1776. will rule

  1777. the world

  1778. the root

  1779. of Jesse

  1780. will spring

  1781. up

  1782. one who

  1783. will arise

  1784. to rule

  1785. over

  1786. the nations

  1787. the Gentiles

  1788. will hope

  1789. in him.

  1790. This is not

  1791. a New Testament

  1792. idea that

  1793. suddenly came

  1794. up in the

  1795. mind of

  1796. Paul

  1797. now that

  1798. he was

  1799. engaged in

  1800. missionary

  1801. endeavor in

  1802. the nations.

  1803. This was

  1804. fundamental to

  1805. God's purposes

  1806. from the word

  1807. go.

  1808. The global

  1809. purpose of

  1810. the gospel

  1811. and the

  1812. global purpose

  1813. of God's

  1814. call to his

  1815. people embedded

  1816. in the very

  1817. Psalms that

  1818. they sang

  1819. was that

  1820. the Gentiles

  1821. too

  1822. would praise

  1823. the living

  1824. God.

  1825. So in

  1826. effect

  1827. as he

  1828. ends like

  1829. that

  1830. he's saying

  1831. you know

  1832. when you

  1833. have your

  1834. issues

  1835. of strong

  1836. and weak

  1837. I could

  1838. never do

  1839. that

  1840. I could

  1841. do that

  1842. what's

  1843. the problem

  1844. with that

  1845. when you

  1846. have these

  1847. issues

  1848. God says

  1849. here in

  1850. Romans 15

  1851. get over

  1852. it

  1853. get over

  1854. it and

  1855. remember the

  1856. global

  1857. purpose of

  1858. the gospel

  1859. there is a

  1860. bigger purpose

  1861. a much

  1862. bigger purpose

  1863. than how you

  1864. relate in

  1865. your fellowship

  1866. over some

  1867. cultural

  1868. difference that

  1869. has spilled

  1870. through history

  1871. and landed

  1872. on your

  1873. plate in

  1874. its current

  1875. form

  1876. get over

  1877. it and

  1878. remember the

  1879. global purpose

  1880. of the gospel

  1881. and the

  1882. global purpose

  1883. of the

  1884. Old Testament

  1885. scriptures

  1886. that's how

  1887. Paul wraps

  1888. up his

  1889. description of

  1890. the strong

  1891. and the weak

  1892. and you know

  1893. verse 22

  1894. of chapter 14

  1895. which we

  1896. didn't read

  1897. tonight

  1898. is a very

  1899. good place

  1900. to end

  1901. chapter 14

  1902. verse 22

  1903. so

  1904. whatever you

  1905. believe about

  1906. these things

  1907. the meat

  1908. the sabbath

  1909. the shopping

  1910. the sport

  1911. whatever it is

  1912. whatever you

  1913. believe about

  1914. these things

  1915. keep between

  1916. yourself

  1917. and God

  1918. because the

  1919. cross

  1920. the scriptures

  1921. the spirit

  1922. and God's

  1923. call to the

  1924. world

  1925. should

  1926. over

  1927. arch all

  1928. your squabbles

  1929. and differences

  1930. about these

  1931. petty trivia

  1932. and there

  1933. is a time

  1934. often

  1935. when these

  1936. things are

  1937. about to

  1938. burst into

  1939. flames and

  1940. cause destruction

  1941. in a church

  1942. family

  1943. to say

  1944. nothing

  1945. and unite

  1946. around the

  1947. Lord Jesus

  1948. himself

  1949. well let's

  1950. pray

  1951. dear heavenly

  1952. father

  1953. sometimes

  1954. often

  1955. perhaps

  1956. we feel

  1957. it better

  1958. to speak

  1959. our mind

  1960. to others

  1961. and to

  1962. keep matters

  1963. between

  1964. us

  1965. and you

  1966. Lord you

  1967. know our

  1968. hearts

  1969. you know

  1970. when we

  1971. rile each

  1972. other

  1973. you know

  1974. in a way

  1975. that I

  1976. certainly

  1977. don't

  1978. all the

  1979. potential

  1980. problems

  1981. of this

  1982. fellowship

  1983. but we

  1984. pray this

  1985. evening

  1986. heavenly

  1987. father

  1988. that

  1989. at one

  1990. with the

  1991. savior

  1992. who died

  1993. on the

  1994. cross

  1995. listening

  1996. to your

  1997. word

  1998. in the

  1999. scriptures

  2000. and united

  2001. by your

  2002. spirit

  2003. we might

  2004. with one

  2005. voice

  2006. bring glory

  2007. to Jesus

  2008. even

  2009. this coming

  2010. week

  2011. for his

  2012. name's

  2013. sake

  2014. amen
