  1. Good evening everyone, really good to have you with us this evening.

  2. As Neil says, we've got a bit of a plethora of peas over the next few minutes.

  3. I hope it doesn't become too wearisome or appear too strained,

  4. but it came to me as I was studying the passage for this evening.

  5. Three of them to look out for as we read the passage,

  6. I think they divided it up quite nicely.

  7. There will be Paul's priorities, there will be Paul's plans,

  8. and then there will be Paul's prayer.

  9. So look out for these Paul's priorities, Paul's plans, and Paul's prayers.

  10. So let's read from Romans chapter 15, and we'll be reading from verse 14.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  11. Romans chapter 15 and verse 14.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  12. Paul writes,

  13. I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness,

  14. complete in knowledge, and competent to instruct one another.

  15. I've written you quite boldly on some points,

  16. as if to remind you of them because of the grace God gave me,

  17. to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles,

  18. with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God,

  19. so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God,

  20. sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

  21. Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.

  22. I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me

  23. in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done,

  24. by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit.

  25. So from Jerusalem all the way round to Illyricum,

  26. I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

  27. It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known,

  28. so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation.

  29. Rather, as it is written,

  30. those who are not told about him will see,

  31. and those who have not heard will understand.

  32. That is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.

  33. But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions,

  34. and since I have been longing for many years to see you,

  35. I plan to do so when I go to Spain.

  36. I hope to visit you while passing through,

  37. and to have you assist me on my journey there,

  38. after I have enjoyed your company for a while.

  39. Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem,

  40. in the service of the saints there.

  41. For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution

  42. for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.

  43. They were pleased to do it,

  44. and indeed they owe it to them.

  45. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews spiritual blessings,

  46. they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.

  47. So after I have completed this task,

  48. and have made sure that they have received this fruit,

  49. I will go to Spain and visit you on the way.

  50. I know that when I come to you,

  51. I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

  52. I urge you, brothers,

  53. by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit,

  54. to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

  55. Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea,

  56. and that my service in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints there,

  57. so that by God's will,

  58. I will come to you with joy,

  59. and together with you be refreshed.

  60. May God of peace be with you all.

  61. Amen.

  62. Thank God I'm sure we'll bless his word as we consider it together.

  63. One of my favourite books on Romans is this one,

  64. written by the hymn writer Michael Saywer.

  65. It's got a nice pink 70s cover.

  66. I've had it for many years.

  67. And when I was a teenager, I found it particularly useful.

  68. It's very short, full of pictures and big print,

  69. and it gives a very brief introduction to the book of Romans.

  70. What appealed to me particularly about it,

  71. was the metaphor that Michael Saywer drew for Romans.

  72. Romans, he said it's like a good meal.

  73. Your good meal starts with oysters.

  74. Now the first time you taste oysters,

  75. you think you've just been given some salty water to swallow.

  76. They taste horrible.

  77. But I'm told if you persevere at it and you keep going,

  78. oysters become a real delicacy

  79. and something that really sets you up for the meal that's to follow.

  80. And that's broadly what the position is

  81. in the first two and a half chapters of Romans.

  82. Something you look at and say, this is horrible.

  83. It's talking about man's sinfulness compared with God's holiness

  84. and the judgment that we rightly deserve.

  85. And you think this really isn't very good.

  86. But when you have read through the whole Romans,

  87. come back to it, you recognize it is an essential part of the book.

  88. It is the thing that whets your appetite for what's to come.

  89. The next few chapters, from the middle of chapter 3 to chapter 8,

  90. Michael Saywer says are like roast beef.

  91. It's a good, hearty meal.

  92. Roast beef and all the trimmings.

  93. Solid meat you can get your teeth into.

  94. And that is really satisfying.

  95. It is the heart of the gospel,

  96. as Paul writes to us about the grace that is ours through the Lord Jesus

  97. and all the wonderful blessings that come to us from that.

  98. We then have a kosher course for three chapters,

  99. chapters 9 to 11, written specifically for the Jews.

  100. And then the dessert, which is described as fruit perfect,

  101. perfect fruit, what is the result of the work of Christ in our lives.

  102. And it is the fruit that we should display to others.

  103. So a great meal.

  104. Michael Saywer doesn't go quite this far,

  105. but I think if we're looking at the last chapter and a half of Romans,

  106. we would say that it is the coffee and after dinner mints.

  107. It is the time when we put our feet up a bit, relax a little bit more,

  108. and are able to chat about more personal things,

  109. talk about people that we know.

  110. John will be talking a lot about that next week in chapter 16.

  111. It is Paul writing much more personally to the church in Rome

  112. rather than the great theological treatise

  113. which has made up the bulk of the book.

  114. And as he does it, I think Paul is very aware

  115. that this is a church that he hasn't been to visit.

  116. You got that, I'm sure, as we went through our reading.

  117. Paul was really eager to visit them.

  118. It's a church he didn't visit.

  119. And usually for those he wrote to,

  120. it's a church he also obviously didn't find.

  121. And perhaps as he was writing

  122. and as he was explaining the gospel to them,

  123. he was thinking, well, I wonder if they're going to think

  124. this is a bit basic.

  125. Am I being condescending in the way I write to them?

  126. And to some extent, I think that colours what comes

  127. particularly in the early verses

  128. of what we're looking at this evening.

  129. So as I said, it's priorities, plans and prayers.

  130. And we're starting with Paul's priorities

  131. which go through from verse 14 down to verse 22.

  132. What is Paul's priority as he writes to the Romans,

  133. as he thinks about his work in the gospel?

  134. Well, the first priority I would suggest is people.

  135. It always was with Paul.

  136. Paul, as I said, is very aware of those he is writing to.

  137. And he is very aware as a minister of the gospel,

  138. as a servant of the Lord Jesus,

  139. that he wants to treat these people with real respect

  140. and to show them how much he cares for them.

  141. And so in verse 14, as he writes,

  142. as he thinks how many they might receive his message,

  143. he wants to make clear to them,

  144. he doesn't see them as being infants in the faith.

  145. He isn't talking down to them in any way.

  146. Rather, as he always is,

  147. he's very thankful to God for all that he's done in their lives.

  148. And he says three things about the Romans.

  149. He says you're full of goodness,

  150. you're filled with knowledge,

  151. and you're competent to instruct,

  152. or some versions say to admonish one another.

  153. You're full of goodness.

  154. What the effect of the gospel has been in your lives

  155. is to make you good.

  156. It is to make you want to do what is right,

  157. and particularly to show the love of Christ to others

  158. and to show how much you care for them.

  159. And very much what Paul has been writing about

  160. in chapters 12 through to 14

  161. is what you could have gone on to the church in Rome

  162. and probably found there.

  163. People who are exercising their spiritual gifts

  164. for the benefit of the church,

  165. people who showed hospitality,

  166. who showed love to others,

  167. people who had real goodness.

  168. They're also filled with knowledge.

  169. They're people who had taken the time

  170. to study the scriptures,

  171. to think through the gospel,

  172. and to understand the greatness of their salvation.

  173. They had come to a knowledge of the Lord as Savior,

  174. and they wanted to be filled with knowledge of him

  175. as Lord as well.

  176. And finally, they're competent to instruct one another.

  177. Some versions say to admonish.

  178. I think this speaks both of the preaching side

  179. and of the one-to-one side,

  180. of being able to talk honesty with one another

  181. and to help one another to grow in their faith.

  182. Three things which should be evident in our church as well.

  183. They were characterized by goodness,

  184. that we are people who have a love for the Lord Jesus,

  185. and that is shown in the lives that we live

  186. in pleasing him.

  187. People who have a knowledge of the Lord

  188. and of the scriptures

  189. and want to deepen that knowledge

  190. and come to know him better.

  191. And people also who are able to be open

  192. and honest with one another

  193. and to build one another up in our faith

  194. and instruct each other in what is right.

  195. And Paul says to the Romans,

  196. my priority, one of my priorities,

  197. is the people and I've looked at you

  198. and I'm thanking God for you.

  199. You're displaying these things

  200. and yet I think it's good to remind you of them.

  201. Even if we feel we know the gospel very well,

  202. even if we've been many, many years in the faith,

  203. it's good to be reminded of God's greatness

  204. and of God's grace for us.

  205. And Paul says,

  206. that's what I've been doing

  207. in the letter that I've written.

  208. So Paul's first priority is people,

  209. the people he's writing to.

  210. Priority number two

  211. is that Paul sees himself as a priest.

  212. Now that is in some ways

  213. slightly surprising with Paul.

  214. It's not something we'd need to associate.

  215. Priesthood you think of perhaps the book of Hebrews

  216. rather than the writings

  217. that are normally attributed to Paul.

  218. But Paul in these verses

  219. clearly sees his work among the Gentiles

  220. as being a priestly work.

  221. He says, verse 16,

  222. he gave me the priestly duty

  223. of proclaiming the gospel of God

  224. so that the Gentiles might become an offering

  225. acceptable to God,

  226. sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

  227. And a lot of the other words

  228. around the word he uses for minister or serve

  229. is also a word that has priestly connotations

  230. in this passage.

  231. What is Paul saying here?

  232. He's saying that his work

  233. is to reach out to others

  234. with the gospel,

  235. particularly reach out to the Gentiles,

  236. and then to bring them to God

  237. as an offering to him.

  238. That God would be pleased

  239. that the Gentiles had turned to him

  240. and that they were living godly lives.

  241. Remember the chart of chapter 12,

  242. Paul exhorts his listeners

  243. to present their bodies

  244. as living sacrifices,

  245. holy and acceptable to God.

  246. I think a similar idea here,

  247. but in this case,

  248. it's not the individuals

  249. presenting themselves to God.

  250. It is Paul being able

  251. to present the Gentiles to God

  252. and say the work of the Lord Jesus

  253. has been effective,

  254. not just among the Jews,

  255. but among the Gentiles.

  256. And here are those

  257. who are worthy of being seen

  258. as a sacrifice.

  259. Not in any sense,

  260. it repeats the work of the Lord Jesus,

  261. the ultimate sacrifice

  262. that he made for us on the cross.

  263. But it is something

  264. that is going to be pleasing to God

  265. as sacrifices were

  266. when they were done in the right way

  267. with the right attitude.

  268. It is something that God

  269. can take great pleasure in

  270. that his people have come to him

  271. and Paul is able to present them

  272. as a sacrifice before God.

  273. His work among the Gentiles

  274. was a work of the priest

  275. in presenting acceptable offerings to God.

  276. Third priority that Paul has

  277. is a word called power.

  278. The word power is mentioned

  279. a couple of times in the past.

  280. And the power of Paul

  281. is particularly talking about here

  282. is the power of miracles,

  283. of signs and wonders.

  284. Miracles in the New Testament

  285. were never done just for effect,

  286. not done even just for the benefits

  287. of those who experienced the miracles,

  288. although obviously they were.

  289. The miracles of the Lord Jesus,

  290. indeed of Paul,

  291. helped many people

  292. in a physical sense.

  293. But miracles ultimately

  294. were to show the power of God

  295. and to demonstrate

  296. that those who were able

  297. to perform the miracles

  298. had been sent by God,

  299. were truly God's servants.

  300. And for Paul,

  301. as he went around the Gentiles,

  302. as he went around cities

  303. that were very pagan,

  304. among people who had little concept

  305. of the one God,

  306. the great God of heaven,

  307. and to a multitude of gods

  308. around their cities.

  309. The fact that Paul was able

  310. to display something

  311. of the power of God

  312. in the way that he worked among them,

  313. that was a really effective way

  314. of validating his ministry,

  315. of showing to these people

  316. this is something

  317. that really is from God.

  318. So he places some stress

  319. on these verses

  320. of the fact

  321. that he had come

  322. with the power of God

  323. and what he had accomplished

  324. among the Gentiles

  325. was a result of that power

  326. and the power

  327. that would spread miraculous signs

  328. in particular

  329. was a demonstration

  330. as the people were amazed

  331. at what happened.

  332. They were a demonstration

  333. of the power of God

  334. in Paul's life.

  335. Number four,

  336. there are five in total

  337. in this section.

  338. All peas,

  339. as I said,

  340. proclamation.

  341. Again,

  342. a couple of times

  343. Paul talks about

  344. proclaiming the gospel.

  345. And as I said,

  346. if he showed works of power

  347. among the Gentiles,

  348. the purpose of that

  349. was so that he had a platform

  350. on which he could proclaim

  351. the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  352. That is Paul's job.

  353. That is Paul's calling.

  354. That is what he sees

  355. as God's purpose

  356. in his life.

  357. He gave me,

  358. he says in verse 16,

  359. the priestly duty

  360. of proclaiming

  361. the gospel of God.

  362. And in verse 19,

  363. from Jerusalem

  364. all the way around

  365. to Illyricum,

  366. we'll have a geography lesson

  367. in a few minutes.

  368. From Jerusalem

  369. all the way around

  370. to Illyricum,

  371. I have fully proclaimed

  372. the gospel of Christ.

  373. It has always been

  374. my ambition

  375. to preach the gospel

  376. where Christ

  377. was not known.

  378. Paul was the missionary

  379. to the Gentiles

  380. and very important to him

  381. as he went around

  382. that he was able

  383. to proclaim

  384. the gospel.

  385. Now,

  386. Paul's normal pattern,

  387. as you know,

  388. certainly early

  389. in his ministry

  390. when he went

  391. to a new city

  392. was he went first

  393. to the synagogue

  394. and he proclaimed

  395. Jesus to the Jews

  396. who had the Old Testament

  397. background and should

  398. have understood

  399. what it was about.

  400. Generally rejected

  401. by the Jews

  402. and then he went out

  403. and proclaimed

  404. wherever he could

  405. get a hearing

  406. among the Gentiles.

  407. But his particular ministry,

  408. he says,

  409. is to proclaim

  410. the word of God

  411. among the Gentiles.

  412. Now,

  413. some of the most public

  414. places in the ancient world

  415. and the marketplace

  416. in Athens

  417. and Mars Hill

  418. and all over the place,

  419. Paul was able

  420. to proclaim

  421. that Jesus

  422. is the Lord,

  423. he is the Christ,

  424. he is the Son of God,

  425. he is the only way

  426. of salvation.

  427. And of course,

  428. that is our

  429. principal duty

  430. as we are in the world

  431. today,

  432. to proclaim Jesus,

  433. to let others

  434. know about him,

  435. whether it's in a public way

  436. or in a private way

  437. as we talk to our friends,

  438. that we may proclaim

  439. that Jesus

  440. is the Savior

  441. of the world,

  442. the Son of God

  443. who is able

  444. to forgive our sins.

  445. So Paul's priority

  446. of proclamation.

  447. And then the last one

  448. on this bit,

  449. Paul was a pioneer.

  450. Paul is very clear

  451. in this passage,

  452. he didn't want

  453. to be going to places

  454. which had already

  455. heard the gospel.

  456. Now,

  457. there is a role

  458. in missionary work

  459. for missionaries

  460. who go to places

  461. where the gospel

  462. has been preached,

  463. perhaps where the church

  464. is fairly new

  465. and immature

  466. and to teach the word

  467. and to help

  468. and to support

  469. the church

  470. in these areas.

  471. But that wasn't

  472. Paul's work.

  473. Paul's work

  474. was to go to new places,

  475. to go throughout

  476. the Roman Empire

  477. and where they hadn't yet

  478. heard the name

  479. of the Lord Jesus,

  480. to proclaim Jesus

  481. and to see men

  482. and women

  483. coming to faith

  484. in him.

  485. That wasn't just

  486. that he went to a place

  487. and he had a two-week

  488. gospel campaign

  489. and then he went down

  490. somewhere else.

  491. He stayed for a considerable

  492. time in places

  493. like Corinth

  494. and Ephesus

  495. to see the church

  496. established

  497. and beginning

  498. to be built up.

  499. But he very much

  500. saw that his ministry

  501. was to the unreached

  502. in the world

  503. of his day,

  504. not to those

  505. who already

  506. had the gospel.

  507. Particularly relevance

  508. of that in Romans,

  509. the gospel clearly

  510. had reached Rome

  511. through other people,

  512. there were others

  513. who had gone perhaps

  514. naturally to the centre

  515. of the empire

  516. with the gospel

  517. and Paul didn't see

  518. Rome as being

  519. his particular mission

  520. field.

  521. Now,

  522. when he was in Rome,

  523. he did proclaim

  524. the gospel,

  525. we know he did,

  526. and he was there

  527. as a witness

  528. for the Lord Jesus,

  529. but that wasn't

  530. his particular calling,

  531. his particular work.

  532. His work was to be

  533. a pioneer missionary.

  534. Pioneer missionaries

  535. are really,

  536. really valuable

  537. even nowadays,

  538. going to parts

  539. of the world

  540. where people

  541. don't know the gospel,

  542. parts of the world

  543. often where it is

  544. dangerous to be

  545. a missionary

  546. in places like

  547. the Middle East

  548. or China

  549. where being a missionary

  550. is a difficult

  551. and often dangerous

  552. thing and where

  553. being a Christian

  554. can be very difficult.

  555. Still a place

  556. for pioneer missionaries

  557. in our day

  558. and we should really

  559. be praying for them

  560. as they seek

  561. to serve the Lord Jesus

  562. in this way,

  563. as well as those

  564. who go to support

  565. the church

  566. and to reach out

  567. in other parts

  568. of our world

  569. which are equally

  570. ungodly in many ways

  571. even though the gospel

  572. has reached them.

  573. So five Ps there,

  574. people,

  575. priest,

  576. power,

  577. proclamation,

  578. pioneer.

  579. Allow me two more

  580. as I sum up this section

  581. and try and apply it

  582. for us today.

  583. It's two that Neil

  584. mentioned to us.

  585. And what comes across

  586. very clearly

  587. in this passage

  588. is that God saw

  589. a purpose of God

  590. in his life.

  591. His sole purpose

  592. in life,

  593. he says,

  594. is to glorify God

  595. through proclaiming

  596. the word to the Gentiles

  597. and being able

  598. to present them

  599. as an acceptable sacrifice

  600. before God.

  601. Paul had a clear sense

  602. of his calling,

  603. of what it was

  604. that God had called him

  605. to do

  606. and he was determined

  607. that he was going

  608. to fulfill that

  609. even though it might not

  610. have been what others

  611. thought would have been

  612. the right thing.

  613. This was God's purpose

  614. for him

  615. and Paul was determined

  616. that he was going

  617. to pursue it

  618. to the end.

  619. Application for us.

  620. Important that we

  621. understand God's purpose

  622. for us

  623. as much as we can.

  624. That we are very much

  625. looking for

  626. what is it that God

  627. wants me to do?

  628. What are the areas

  629. of service

  630. with which God

  631. has called me?

  632. This is something

  633. I've struggled with

  634. a bit

  635. in recent years.

  636. When you're in

  637. church leadership

  638. and I don't think

  639. it's just in this church

  640. or almost any church

  641. you tend to be

  642. dragged along a bit

  643. by what needs

  644. to be done.

  645. You see a need

  646. that needs to be met

  647. and you feel

  648. I'm able to meet that.

  649. And perhaps at times

  650. not a lot of it

  651. apart from being called

  652. to be a church leader

  653. which is a very high calling

  654. but in the day to day

  655. the detail stuff of it

  656. a lot of it

  657. you perhaps

  658. don't immediately see

  659. the purpose behind it

  660. how God is leading you

  661. in it.

  662. And I've certainly felt

  663. over the last few years

  664. that from my point of view

  665. there are some things

  666. I feel God has

  667. particularly called me to

  668. which are not particularly

  669. part of being church leadership

  670. in the church.

  671. Here's things like

  672. Basic Bank and Ferrywell

  673. one and two others as well

  674. which I felt

  675. this is God's purpose

  676. for me

  677. at this point

  678. in my life.

  679. And I think it's good

  680. if all of us

  681. can take that step back

  682. and think

  683. what is it

  684. that God

  685. is calling me

  686. to do?

  687. Is my life

  688. just dictated

  689. by events

  690. by things

  691. that happen

  692. in the church

  693. and it's go along

  694. with them

  695. and I don't really

  696. have any purpose

  697. any plan

  698. for my life?

  699. Or am I looking

  700. very deliberately

  701. and saying

  702. what is it

  703. that God

  704. has laid on my heart

  705. for me to do?

  706. How can I

  707. particularly serve?

  708. And whether it's

  709. in the church

  710. or whether it's

  711. outside the church.

  712. Paul's purpose

  713. I said

  714. was very clear

  715. to him

  716. and he was

  717. single-minded

  718. in pursuing it.

  719. I think too many

  720. of us as Christians

  721. just drift along

  722. and we're not

  723. deliberate enough

  724. in looking to God

  725. for his guidance

  726. and to know

  727. what it is

  728. that he has

  729. planned for us

  730. for acts of service

  731. acts of worship

  732. to him

  733. as we would seek

  734. to live lives

  735. that are pleasing

  736. to the Lord Jesus.

  737. Now you may feel

  738. that it's very clear

  739. for you

  740. and if you do

  741. and forgive me

  742. for labouring it

  743. for me it wasn't

  744. for me it was

  745. something I felt

  746. I need to think about

  747. I need to

  748. before God

  749. think about

  750. what it is

  751. that God

  752. wants me

  753. to do.

  754. And unlike

  755. the purpose

  756. there is

  757. passion.

  758. If you see

  759. a purpose

  760. in something

  761. you're much more

  762. likely to be

  763. passionate about it.

  764. If you feel

  765. this is something

  766. that God

  767. has really called me to

  768. then you're going

  769. to put your whole

  770. heart into it.

  771. And don't we see

  772. that with Paul?

  773. That with the Gentiles

  774. here is something

  775. that he has

  776. completely poured

  777. himself into.

  778. He has travelled

  779. thousands of miles

  780. with the gospel.

  781. Plans to travel

  782. thousands more

  783. which we'll come

  784. on to in a minute.

  785. He has a real desire

  786. that throughout

  787. the world

  788. the name of Christ

  789. should be known

  790. and should be worshipped

  791. and the Lord

  792. should be followed.

  793. He has as we read

  794. any of his letters

  795. such a deep love

  796. and commitment

  797. to those

  798. who have come

  799. to know the Lord

  800. Jesus through his work

  801. and even those

  802. he hasn't yet met.

  803. He has a passion

  804. for the work

  805. that God has

  806. called him

  807. to do.

  808. And we too

  809. need to have

  810. that kind of passion

  811. in our Christian lives.

  812. Not that we become

  813. what people might call

  814. passionate

  815. in the sense

  816. that we would think

  817. of in the world

  818. there's no harm

  819. in that

  820. but some of us

  821. are more understated

  822. and quiet

  823. perhaps particularly

  824. in Scotland

  825. but that we have

  826. a real desire

  827. to do things

  828. well for the Lord

  829. Jesus

  830. and that it is

  831. something that

  832. really motivates us

  833. and that drives us on.

  834. That we're not

  835. half-hearted

  836. in the work

  837. that God has

  838. called us to do.

  839. We're not happy

  840. with second best

  841. with doing a bit

  842. but not going

  843. the whole way.

  844. Paul was

  845. absolutely

  846. passionate

  847. in his work

  848. among the Gentiles

  849. and whatever work

  850. God has called

  851. us to do

  852. we similarly

  853. should be

  854. passionate about

  855. as we fulfil

  856. God's purpose

  857. in our lives.

  858. So Paul's priority

  859. is summarised

  860. by his purpose

  861. and by his passion.

  862. You'll be pleased

  863. to know that's

  864. the end of the Ps

  865. apart from the main headings

  866. and we won't have

  867. any more

  868. this evening.

  869. I want to move on now

  870. and look at Paul's plans

  871. and we have a bit

  872. of geography.

  873. Hope you can see

  874. that map

  875. reasonably well.

  876. It's a kind of

  877. modern map

  878. in terms of the places

  879. that are named on it

  880. but it's a map

  881. of Paul's work

  882. and Paul's ministry.

  883. So a number of places

  884. number one

  885. is Corinth.

  886. Corinth almost certainly

  887. was the place

  888. from which Paul

  889. wrote the letter

  890. to the Romans.

  891. So this is where

  892. Paul is now

  893. in Corinth

  894. in Greece.

  895. Number two

  896. I'm sure he recognises

  897. Rome

  898. Rome for which

  899. Paul was writing

  900. and the place

  901. where he had

  902. that deep

  903. longing

  904. to go to.

  905. Number three

  906. again you might

  907. have a good

  908. stab at

  909. is Jerusalem

  910. and so Paul

  911. has a desire

  912. to go to Jerusalem

  913. the mother church

  914. is in Jerusalem

  915. and he wants

  916. to go there

  917. for a particular

  918. purpose

  919. we'll come to

  920. in a minute.

  921. Number four

  922. is the one

  923. you might have

  924. a little more

  925. difficulty placing

  926. and it's the

  927. perhaps slightly

  928. unfamiliar

  929. name in the passage

  930. Illyricum.

  931. So broadly

  932. speaking

  933. in modern

  934. terms

  935. that's Albania

  936. it's a bit

  937. of Bosnia

  938. and perhaps

  939. a little bit

  940. of Croatia

  941. in there as well

  942. as that kind

  943. of Baltic

  944. region

  945. around

  946. what used

  947. to be

  948. Yugoslavia

  949. by and large

  950. and that was

  951. the kind

  952. of far

  953. extreme

  954. of where

  955. Paul had

  956. been

  957. in his

  958. missionary

  959. journeys

  960. and number

  961. five of course

  962. on the left

  963. is Spain.

  964. So Paul

  965. is writing

  966. from one

  967. to two

  968. from Corinth

  969. to Rome

  970. and he says

  971. I have preached

  972. the gospel

  973. from Jerusalem

  974. to Illyricum

  975. and that's

  976. a distance

  977. of about

  978. 1400 miles

  979. and remember

  980. Paul wasn't

  981. going around

  982. in planes

  983. or terrains

  984. he was going

  985. very often

  986. on foot

  987. or by ship

  988. and he was

  989. going backwards

  990. and forwards

  991. a lot of the time

  992. he had travelled

  993. an enormous

  994. distance

  995. with the gospel

  996. and that is

  997. what he really

  998. brings out

  999. in the early

  1000. verses

  1001. of the passage.

  1002. But Paul's

  1003. ultimate desire

  1004. is to go

  1005. to Spain

  1006. Now if

  1007. Jerusalem

  1008. to Illyricum

  1009. is about

  1010. 1400 miles

  1011. I would guess

  1012. Jerusalem

  1013. to Spain

  1014. is maybe

  1015. something like

  1016. 2000,

  1017. 2500 miles

  1018. it's a very

  1019. long way

  1020. and yet

  1021. Paul sees

  1022. Spain

  1023. as being

  1024. strategic

  1025. in the gospel

  1026. Now Spain

  1027. in that day

  1028. was an important

  1029. place

  1030. Seneca

  1031. who was

  1032. Nero's tutor

  1033. came from

  1034. Spain

  1035. many of the

  1036. more intellectual

  1037. people in the

  1038. ancient world

  1039. came from

  1040. indeed a couple

  1041. of emperors

  1042. eventually would

  1043. come from

  1044. Spain

  1045. so it was

  1046. an important

  1047. place

  1048. that obviously

  1049. hadn't yet

  1050. been reached

  1051. by the gospel

  1052. and Paul

  1053. thought

  1054. here is

  1055. somewhere

  1056. that I

  1057. could

  1058. go to

  1059. So Paul's

  1060. plan

  1061. was to go

  1062. from Corinth

  1063. to Spain

  1064. but he wanted

  1065. to go via

  1066. Jerusalem

  1067. So he started

  1068. in Corinth

  1069. in the middle

  1070. of the map

  1071. he heads down

  1072. to bottom

  1073. right

  1074. to Jerusalem

  1075. and then he's

  1076. going to head

  1077. all the way

  1078. back up

  1079. to top

  1080. left

  1081. to Spain

  1082. and by

  1083. taking him

  1084. on the way

  1085. as well

  1086. why would

  1087. Paul want

  1088. to do

  1089. such a long

  1090. journey

  1091. why bother

  1092. going back

  1093. to Jerusalem

  1094. when his

  1095. ultimate purpose

  1096. was to get

  1097. to Spain

  1098. via Rome

  1099. and the answer

  1100. to that

  1101. in the passage

  1102. is that Paul

  1103. has been taking

  1104. a collection

  1105. among the churches

  1106. in Macedonia

  1107. and Achaia

  1108. broadly

  1109. in Greece

  1110. the church

  1111. in Jerusalem

  1112. was going

  1113. through

  1114. difficult times

  1115. there were

  1116. a number

  1117. of Christians

  1118. in great

  1119. poverty

  1120. and Paul

  1121. said to the

  1122. Gentile believers

  1123. here's the

  1124. opportunity

  1125. for you

  1126. to enjoy

  1127. fellowship

  1128. with the

  1129. church

  1130. in Judea

  1131. here's an

  1132. opportunity

  1133. for you

  1134. to repay

  1135. some of

  1136. the debt

  1137. that you

  1138. owe

  1139. to them

  1140. and Paul

  1141. very much

  1142. saw the

  1143. Gentiles

  1144. as owing

  1145. a debt

  1146. to the Jews

  1147. those who

  1148. had first

  1149. heard the

  1150. gospel

  1151. and first

  1152. proclaimed

  1153. the gospel

  1154. who for

  1155. many years

  1156. had been

  1157. God's

  1158. people

  1159. and from

  1160. whom the

  1161. Messiah

  1162. had come

  1163. Paul saw

  1164. that the

  1165. Gentiles

  1166. had some

  1167. kind of

  1168. debt

  1169. that should

  1170. be paid

  1171. to the

  1172. Jews

  1173. and so

  1174. when he

  1175. heard of

  1176. the poverty

  1177. in Judea

  1178. Paul had

  1179. this collection

  1180. some churches

  1181. like Philippi

  1182. gave very

  1183. willingly

  1184. and very

  1185. generously

  1186. others like

  1187. Corinth

  1188. gave slightly

  1189. more grudgingly

  1190. but when Paul

  1191. exhorted them

  1192. it appears

  1193. that they did

  1194. give

  1195. and he was

  1196. able to say

  1197. that they

  1198. gave happily

  1199. in the end

  1200. and Paul

  1201. had this

  1202. probably

  1203. quite substantial

  1204. sum of money

  1205. that he

  1206. wanted to

  1207. get to the

  1208. church

  1209. in Judea

  1210. in Jerusalem

  1211. and he

  1212. felt it

  1213. was really

  1214. important

  1215. that he

  1216. went there

  1217. personally

  1218. with it

  1219. now we

  1220. might think

  1221. for Paul

  1222. the obvious

  1223. thing to do

  1224. was to get

  1225. Timothy or

  1226. Titus or

  1227. one of the

  1228. others he

  1229. could trust

  1230. and get

  1231. them to

  1232. take the

  1233. gift to

  1234. Jerusalem

  1235. while Paul

  1236. headed off

  1237. to Spain

  1238. it has to

  1239. be said

  1240. that many

  1241. of Paul's

  1242. accompanied

  1243. people

  1244. felt the

  1245. same thing

  1246. because there

  1247. was a prophecy

  1248. from a guy

  1249. called Agabus

  1250. who said

  1251. that if Paul

  1252. went to

  1253. Jerusalem

  1254. he would

  1255. be bound

  1256. and would

  1257. be handed

  1258. over to

  1259. the Gentiles

  1260. and look

  1261. and Paul's

  1262. companion said

  1263. to Paul

  1264. you really

  1265. don't want

  1266. to go there

  1267. then do

  1268. you

  1269. and Paul

  1270. said

  1271. no I'm

  1272. going

  1273. whatever

  1274. happens

  1275. to me

  1276. I'm

  1277. going

  1278. to

  1279. Jerusalem

  1280. I am

  1281. taking

  1282. this gift

  1283. to them

  1284. personally

  1285. this gift

  1286. was really

  1287. important

  1288. to Paul

  1289. it was

  1290. important

  1291. partly

  1292. because he

  1293. cared about

  1294. his people

  1295. the Jews

  1296. and he

  1297. wanted them

  1298. to be

  1299. have some

  1300. relief

  1301. in their

  1302. poverty

  1303. and a

  1304. great

  1305. Christian

  1306. duty

  1307. to give

  1308. all help

  1309. we can

  1310. to those

  1311. who are

  1312. going

  1313. through

  1314. times

  1315. of

  1316. poverty

  1317. it was

  1318. important

  1319. to him

  1320. too

  1321. as coming

  1322. from the

  1323. Gentile

  1324. church

  1325. as being

  1326. from them

  1327. an indication

  1328. of the

  1329. respect

  1330. that they

  1331. had

  1332. for the

  1333. Jewish

  1334. church

  1335. and I

  1336. said

  1337. for the

  1338. debt

  1339. that was

  1340. paid

  1341. that was

  1342. due

  1343. to

  1344. the

  1345. Jewish

  1346. Christians

  1347. but it

  1348. was particularly

  1349. important

  1350. to Paul

  1351. in terms

  1352. of how

  1353. the Jews

  1354. received

  1355. it

  1356. and we

  1357. come to

  1358. the prayers

  1359. that is a

  1360. lot of

  1361. what Paul

  1362. is praying

  1363. about

  1364. Paul was

  1365. really quite

  1366. concerned

  1367. that the

  1368. gift might

  1369. go to

  1370. Jerusalem

  1371. and be

  1372. given to

  1373. the Jewish

  1374. Christians

  1375. and they

  1376. would say

  1377. no we're

  1378. not taking

  1379. this

  1380. we're Jews

  1381. we don't

  1382. take anything

  1383. from the

  1384. Gentiles

  1385. it wouldn't

  1386. be right

  1387. for us

  1388. to do

  1389. it

  1390. take it

  1391. away

  1392. we're

  1393. having

  1394. nothing

  1395. to do

  1396. with it

  1397. and if

  1398. that were

  1399. to happen

  1400. that would

  1401. destroy

  1402. much of

  1403. what Paul

  1404. had spent

  1405. his ministry

  1406. trying to

  1407. build up

  1408. he had

  1409. presented

  1410. that there

  1411. is one

  1412. church

  1413. we are

  1414. all one

  1415. in Christ

  1416. Jesus

  1417. and whether

  1418. we're a

  1419. Jew or a

  1420. Gentile

  1421. it really

  1422. doesn't

  1423. matter

  1424. because we're

  1425. all accepted

  1426. by God

  1427. on the

  1428. same

  1429. basis

  1430. and so

  1431. it's really

  1432. important to

  1433. him that

  1434. when the

  1435. gift went

  1436. to Jerusalem

  1437. it was

  1438. well received

  1439. by the

  1440. Christians

  1441. in Jerusalem

  1442. they recognised

  1443. the concern

  1444. the Gentiles

  1445. had for

  1446. them

  1447. and that

  1448. they recognised

  1449. this was

  1450. another

  1451. evidence

  1452. that there

  1453. was one

  1454. church

  1455. one Lord

  1456. and there

  1457. weren't two

  1458. separate groups

  1459. Jews and

  1460. Gentiles

  1461. within the

  1462. church

  1463. who really

  1464. still didn't

  1465. get on

  1466. with one

  1467. another

  1468. and I

  1469. think that's

  1470. why Paul

  1471. planned

  1472. to go

  1473. to Rome

  1474. and then

  1475. to Spain

  1476. but with a

  1477. detour

  1478. through

  1479. Jerusalem

  1480. to go

  1481. personally

  1482. to take

  1483. the gift

  1484. and to

  1485. show the

  1486. Jews

  1487. just how

  1488. seriously

  1489. he took

  1490. it

  1491. and the

  1492. unity

  1493. that there

  1494. was

  1495. in the

  1496. church

  1497. and so

  1498. Paul made

  1499. his plans

  1500. well we don't

  1501. know if he

  1502. got to

  1503. Spain

  1504. and he

  1505. may well

  1506. have

  1507. there's a

  1508. lot of

  1509. church tradition

  1510. that says

  1511. he eventually

  1512. did get

  1513. to Spain

  1514. we don't

  1515. know

  1516. we do

  1517. know he

  1518. got to

  1519. Rome

  1520. but he

  1521. got to

  1522. Rome

  1523. as a

  1524. prisoner

  1525. because when

  1526. he was in

  1527. Jerusalem

  1528. there was a

  1529. great deal

  1530. of trouble

  1531. stirred up

  1532. against him

  1533. he appealed

  1534. to Caesar

  1535. and he was

  1536. eventually

  1537. taken to

  1538. Rome

  1539. and his

  1540. initial

  1541. imprisonment

  1542. there under

  1543. house arrest

  1544. later of

  1545. course

  1546. martyred for

  1547. his faith

  1548. in Rome

  1549. but he

  1550. made his

  1551. plans

  1552. and God

  1553. in one

  1554. sense

  1555. honoured

  1556. these plans

  1557. but honoured

  1558. them in a

  1559. different way

  1560. from how

  1561. Paul might

  1562. have

  1563. envisaged

  1564. very simple

  1565. lesson for

  1566. us

  1567. there

  1568. it's good

  1569. for us

  1570. to plan

  1571. and if

  1572. we just

  1573. drift along

  1574. as Christian

  1575. is talking

  1576. about we

  1577. really won't

  1578. get very

  1579. far in

  1580. service for

  1581. the Lord

  1582. Jesus

  1583. but we

  1584. must recognise

  1585. we make

  1586. our plans

  1587. and with

  1588. the understanding

  1589. that God

  1590. knows better

  1591. than we

  1592. do how

  1593. they may

  1594. best be

  1595. brought to

  1596. fulfilment

  1597. and it

  1598. may not

  1599. happen in

  1600. the way

  1601. that we

  1602. expect

  1603. Paul's

  1604. plans

  1605. Jerusalem

  1606. then Rome

  1607. and then

  1608. Spain

  1609. and perhaps

  1610. eventually

  1611. he accomplished

  1612. all that

  1613. finally

  1614. last few

  1615. minutes

  1616. Paul's

  1617. prayers

  1618. in almost

  1619. all his

  1620. letters

  1621. Paul encourages

  1622. the Christians

  1623. to pray for

  1624. him

  1625. and he

  1626. makes it

  1627. clear that

  1628. he prays

  1629. for them

  1630. as well

  1631. even the

  1632. churches

  1633. like in

  1634. Colossae

  1635. where Paul

  1636. hadn't been

  1637. didn't know

  1638. most of

  1639. the people

  1640. he was

  1641. very faithful

  1642. in his

  1643. prayer for

  1644. them

  1645. and he

  1646. was very

  1647. aware

  1648. of how

  1649. dependent

  1650. he was

  1651. on their

  1652. prayers

  1653. for him

  1654. and so

  1655. in the

  1656. final verses

  1657. of this

  1658. chapter

  1659. from verse

  1660. 30 onward

  1661. Paul talks

  1662. about his

  1663. prayers

  1664. and the

  1665. prayers

  1666. of God's

  1667. people

  1668. and the

  1669. first thing

  1670. is he

  1671. talks about

  1672. prayer

  1673. as a

  1674. struggle

  1675. now the

  1676. captioner

  1677. says

  1678. struggling

  1679. with God

  1680. I'm not

  1681. sure that

  1682. is what

  1683. Paul is

  1684. talking

  1685. about

  1686. here

  1687. I'm not

  1688. sure this

  1689. is a

  1690. kind of

  1691. Jacob

  1692. moment

  1693. where

  1694. Jacob's

  1695. wrestling

  1696. with God

  1697. and Paul's

  1698. imagining

  1699. we need

  1700. to wrestle

  1701. with God

  1702. as well

  1703. I think

  1704. rather he's

  1705. saying that

  1706. when we

  1707. come to

  1708. pray

  1709. we don't

  1710. do it

  1711. lightly

  1712. we don't

  1713. do it

  1714. half-heartedly

  1715. we come

  1716. to pray

  1717. and to see

  1718. it as a

  1719. real struggle

  1720. as we

  1721. bring to

  1722. God

  1723. perhaps with

  1724. tears

  1725. with longings

  1726. in our

  1727. heart

  1728. and the

  1729. things which

  1730. are most

  1731. precious

  1732. to us

  1733. and so

  1734. Paul says

  1735. you in

  1736. Rome

  1737. you're not

  1738. going to

  1739. go to

  1740. Jerusalem

  1741. you're probably

  1742. not going

  1743. to go to

  1744. Spain

  1745. but be

  1746. with me

  1747. as I go

  1748. and as I

  1749. probably will

  1750. have difficulties

  1751. and struggles

  1752. be with me

  1753. in that struggle

  1754. and the way

  1755. that you can be

  1756. part of it

  1757. is by struggling

  1758. in prayer

  1759. by wrestling

  1760. in prayer

  1761. by bringing

  1762. to God

  1763. with

  1764. fervency

  1765. and with

  1766. real desire

  1767. the ministry

  1768. that Paul

  1769. has

  1770. and praying

  1771. for God's

  1772. blessing

  1773. as he

  1774. goes

  1775. about it

  1776. and two

  1777. things he

  1778. particularly

  1779. wants them

  1780. to pray

  1781. for as

  1782. he goes

  1783. to Jerusalem

  1784. he wants

  1785. them to

  1786. pray for

  1787. his

  1788. protection

  1789. and

  1790. pray

  1791. verse 31

  1792. pray that I

  1793. may be

  1794. kept safe

  1795. from the

  1796. unbelievers

  1797. in Judea

  1798. Paul

  1799. recognised

  1800. that wherever

  1801. he'd gone

  1802. in the

  1803. ancient world

  1804. there were

  1805. Jews who

  1806. were out

  1807. to get

  1808. him

  1809. and he

  1810. had

  1811. suffered

  1812. stoning

  1813. and beatings

  1814. and many

  1815. other things

  1816. as he

  1817. travelled round

  1818. with the

  1819. gospel

  1820. so he

  1821. prayed

  1822. asked him

  1823. to pray

  1824. for his

  1825. protection

  1826. while he

  1827. was protected

  1828. eventually

  1829. there was

  1830. the riot

  1831. and the

  1832. people tried

  1833. to get

  1834. him

  1835. but he

  1836. was protected

  1837. by the

  1838. Romans

  1839. ultimately

  1840. and he

  1841. emerged

  1842. safely

  1843. from Jerusalem

  1844. as he

  1845. later went

  1846. to Rome

  1847. and he

  1848. says also

  1849. as we

  1850. just talked

  1851. about

  1852. that he

  1853. wanted them

  1854. to pray

  1855. for unity

  1856. to pray

  1857. that the

  1858. gift that

  1859. he was

  1860. taking

  1861. with him

  1862. to Jerusalem

  1863. would be

  1864. favourably

  1865. received by

  1866. the church

  1867. that the

  1868. church in

  1869. Jerusalem

  1870. would recognise

  1871. the unity

  1872. that there

  1873. was among

  1874. all Christians

  1875. in the

  1876. Lord Jesus

  1877. two things

  1878. we can pray

  1879. for as well

  1880. as we come

  1881. before God

  1882. pray for those

  1883. who go into

  1884. difficult situations

  1885. now difficult

  1886. situations might

  1887. be those

  1888. where there is

  1889. physical danger

  1890. the pioneer

  1891. missionaries I

  1892. talked about

  1893. earlier on

  1894. a lot of

  1895. people in our

  1896. own country

  1897. who go into

  1898. situations where

  1899. it's difficult

  1900. to talk

  1901. about Jesus

  1902. and perhaps

  1903. it can subject

  1904. them to some

  1905. ridicule

  1906. or some

  1907. difficulties

  1908. I'm thinking

  1909. particularly

  1910. of people

  1911. like teenagers

  1912. in schools

  1913. often standing

  1914. up for Christ

  1915. and that can be

  1916. a very very

  1917. difficult place

  1918. to be a witness

  1919. many in workplaces

  1920. as well

  1921. we should be

  1922. praying for

  1923. and supporting

  1924. one another

  1925. in these things

  1926. that we may be

  1927. protected by God

  1928. that we may be

  1929. given a good

  1930. reception among

  1931. those whom we

  1932. would seek to

  1933. reach

  1934. but praying

  1935. also for

  1936. unity

  1937. that as a

  1938. church

  1939. and with

  1940. other Christians

  1941. who love

  1942. the Lord

  1943. Jesus

  1944. and to

  1945. proclaim the

  1946. gospel

  1947. that we may

  1948. be united

  1949. and that there

  1950. may not be

  1951. divisions among

  1952. us which really

  1953. shouldn't be

  1954. there not

  1955. nowadays

  1956. divisions of

  1957. Jews and

  1958. Gentiles

  1959. but perhaps

  1960. denominational

  1961. divisions

  1962. divisions over

  1963. particular doctrines

  1964. which are

  1965. secondary and

  1966. not fundamental

  1967. to the gospel

  1968. these kind of

  1969. things we

  1970. should seek

  1971. to be

  1972. together as

  1973. Christians

  1974. following and

  1975. serving the

  1976. Lord Jesus

  1977. and anything

  1978. we can do

  1979. to promote

  1980. that unity

  1981. among Bible

  1982. believing

  1983. gospel

  1984. proclaiming

  1985. Christians

  1986. is something

  1987. that should be

  1988. a priority

  1989. for us

  1990. as it is

  1991. for Paul

  1992. and we

  1993. should be

  1994. praying for

  1995. it

  1996. praying perhaps

  1997. particularly for

  1998. organisations

  1999. which seek to

  2000. bring churches

  2001. together

  2002. and organisations

  2003. where lots of

  2004. different Christians

  2005. work together

  2006. scripture union

  2007. that kind of

  2008. thing

  2009. praying for

  2010. para church

  2011. organisations

  2012. Bible

  2013. sites

  2014. evangelical

  2015. alliance

  2016. and so on

  2017. but praying

  2018. just generally

  2019. that in our

  2020. area too

  2021. that there may

  2022. be a unity

  2023. among Christians

  2024. even though we

  2025. disagree on

  2026. secondary things

  2027. that we may be

  2028. united in our

  2029. love for the

  2030. Lord Jesus

  2031. and then finally

  2032. in Paul's prayers

  2033. there is joy

  2034. and peace

  2035. pray that I may

  2036. come to you

  2037. with joy

  2038. or pray

  2039. or pray

  2040. that I may

  2041. receive

  2042. so that I

  2043. may come

  2044. to you

  2045. with joy

  2046. by God's

  2047. will

  2048. and in

  2049. your

  2050. company

  2051. be refreshed

  2052. and the

  2053. God of

  2054. peace

  2055. be with

  2056. you

  2057. all

  2058. these two

  2059. go together

  2060. don't they

  2061. joy

  2062. and peace

  2063. if we have

  2064. one

  2065. there's a good

  2066. chance that we

  2067. have the

  2068. other

  2069. the joy

  2070. of our

  2071. salvation

  2072. in the

  2073. Lord Jesus

  2074. and all

  2075. that that

  2076. brings to

  2077. us

  2078. is very

  2079. strongly linked

  2080. to the

  2081. peace that

  2082. we have

  2083. with God

  2084. and the

  2085. peace that

  2086. God can

  2087. bring through

  2088. his spirit

  2089. in our

  2090. hearts

  2091. and lives

  2092. and we

  2093. should be

  2094. praying for

  2095. one another

  2096. and for

  2097. Christians

  2098. around the

  2099. world

  2100. that we

  2101. will experience

  2102. the joy

  2103. and peace

  2104. that Jesus

  2105. gives to us

  2106. both great

  2107. themes in the

  2108. Lord's upper

  2109. room ministry

  2110. to his

  2111. disciples

  2112. that he

  2113. left them

  2114. peace

  2115. and that

  2116. they would

  2117. have real

  2118. joy

  2119. and these

  2120. are things

  2121. that we

  2122. should pray

  2123. for and

  2124. that Paul

  2125. prays for

  2126. regularly

  2127. as he

  2128. goes to

  2129. the churches

  2130. so Paul's

  2131. priorities

  2132. Paul's

  2133. plans

  2134. Paul's

  2135. prayers

  2136. what are

  2137. our

  2138. priorities

  2139. what purpose

  2140. do we see

  2141. of God

  2142. in our

  2143. lives

  2144. have we

  2145. thought of

  2146. that

  2147. are we

  2148. before God

  2149. seeking his

  2150. will for

  2151. our lives

  2152. and are we

  2153. then passionate

  2154. about what

  2155. God has

  2156. called us

  2157. to do

  2158. as we

  2159. make plans

  2160. are we

  2161. aware that

  2162. our plans

  2163. can only

  2164. come to

  2165. fruition

  2166. if they're

  2167. in the will

  2168. of God

  2169. and he

  2170. may well

  2171. lead us

  2172. our

  2173. circumstances

  2174. in a

  2175. different way

  2176. from what

  2177. we expect

  2178. and above

  2179. all that

  2180. we can

  2181. have purpose

  2182. we can

  2183. have plans

  2184. but unless

  2185. everything is

  2186. infused with

  2187. prayer

  2188. and we are

  2189. really struggling

  2190. before God

  2191. and fervent

  2192. in our

  2193. prayers

  2194. to him

  2195. then we

  2196. can't be

  2197. expecting

  2198. the blessing

  2199. that he

  2200. is so eager

  2201. to give

  2202. to us

  2203. let's be a

  2204. people of

  2205. prayer

  2206. as we

  2207. are a

  2208. people of

  2209. purpose

  2210. and a

  2211. people with

  2212. plans

  2213. for the

  2214. future

  2215. let's pray

  2216. together

  2217. father we

  2218. thank you

  2219. for your

  2220. word

  2221. we thank

  2222. you for

  2223. Paul

  2224. and for

  2225. this great

  2226. work that

  2227. he had

  2228. among the

  2229. Gentiles

  2230. that he

  2231. saw that

  2232. as very

  2233. much his

  2234. work

  2235. and his

  2236. calling

  2237. to go

  2238. where the

  2239. name of

  2240. Christ

  2241. wasn't yet

  2242. known

  2243. and we

  2244. thank you

  2245. for the

  2246. tremendous

  2247. blessing

  2248. that was

  2249. to the

  2250. early church

  2251. and for

  2252. how that

  2253. has really

  2254. shaped so

  2255. much of

  2256. church

  2257. history

  2258. that Paul

  2259. reached out

  2260. beyond the

  2261. confines of

  2262. Judaism

  2263. that he

  2264. brought the

  2265. gospel to

  2266. the Gentiles

  2267. and that it

  2268. has since

  2269. spread throughout

  2270. the world

  2271. help us to

  2272. have that

  2273. sense of

  2274. being called

  2275. by you

  2276. help us to

  2277. understand what

  2278. your purpose

  2279. is in our

  2280. lives

  2281. help us to

  2282. be passionate

  2283. in seeking

  2284. to fulfil it

  2285. and help us

  2286. to particularly

  2287. to be a

  2288. people of

  2289. prayer

  2290. that we may

  2291. join others

  2292. in their

  2293. struggles

  2294. through our

  2295. prayers

  2296. that we may

  2297. support one

  2298. another through

  2299. our prayers

  2300. that through our

  2301. prayers there

  2302. may be real

  2303. unity of

  2304. among us

  2305. and that there

  2306. may be among

  2307. us too a

  2308. real peace

  2309. and joy in

  2310. the Lord

  2311. Jesus

  2312. thank you for

  2313. our time

  2314. together

  2315. we commit

  2316. ourselves to

  2317. you we pray

  2318. that what has

  2319. been from

  2320. yourself this

  2321. evening may be

  2322. remembered and

  2323. may make a real

  2324. difference in our

  2325. lives in the

  2326. coming days and

  2327. weeks we give

  2328. you our thanks in

  2329. Jesus name

  2330. Amen

  2331. You

  2332. you

  2333. you

  2334. you

  2335. you
