  1. Well, please do have a seat.

  2. It sounded like the strangest chant I think I've ever been involved with.

  3. It was beautiful.

  4. But Jesus is the Son of God, and we come to his word this morning expectant.

  5. So can I invite you now to turn to Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  6. and let's finish our reading for this morning,

  7. reading from verse 1 of chapter 4 down to verse 13.

  8. Verse 1 of chapter 4, Luke writes this,

  9. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

  10. where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil.

  11. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

  12. And the devil said to him,

  13. If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.

  14. Jesus answered,

  15. It is written,

  16. Man shall not live on bread alone.

  17. The devil led him up to a high place,

  18. and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.

  19. And he said to him,

  20. I will give you all their authority and splendor.

  21. It has been given to me,

  22. and I can give it to anyone I want.

  23. If you worship me,

  24. it will all be yours.

  25. Jesus answered,

  26. It is written,

  27. Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.

  28. The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.

  29. If you are the Son of God, he said,

  30. throw yourself down from here,

  31. for it is written,

  32. He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully.

  33. They will lift you up in their hands,

  34. so that you will not strike your foot against the stone.

  35. Jesus answered,

  36. It is said,

  37. Do not put the Lord your God to the test.

  38. When the devil had finished all this tempting,

  39. he left him until an opportune time.

  40. Amen.

  41. This is God's word to us this morning.

  42. Let's just pause for a brief moment,

  43. and let's pray together.

  44. Father, we thank you so much for this morning.

  45. Lord, thank you for the gift of being able to sing your praises,

  46. that you are the incomparable,

  47. you are the indescribable God.

  48. And our prayer, Father,

  49. now as we come to your words,

  50. is that you would blow our minds

  51. with the greatness,

  52. the incomparable greatness,

  53. of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  54. And it's in his name

  55. that we make this prayer.

  56. Amen.

  57. Well, it's fantastic to see so many new faces this morning,

  58. and so many returning faces as well,

  59. and so many familiar faces.

  60. It's wonderful to be here together as a church family.

  61. If you are joining us this morning for the first time,

  62. as John said,

  63. you're joining us one sermon in.

  64. This is the second sermon of this new series we're on in Luke's Gospel.

  65. We're just going to be spending the next while as a church,

  66. and our morning service is just hanging out in Luke's Gospel,

  67. spending time getting to know this man, Jesus Christ.

  68. Dr. Luke,

  69. Dr. Luke, the good doctor,

  70. he's taking the time to write this Gospel

  71. so that Theophilus would have,

  72. and so that we would have as his readers,

  73. certainty about this man, Jesus Christ.

  74. This is why he's written this thing,

  75. certainty.

  76. His generation,

  77. he wants certainty.

  78. Every generation following it,

  79. we are included in that.

  80. He wants them to have certainty about Jesus Christ,

  81. who he is,

  82. what he did,

  83. what he's all about,

  84. and why that infinitely matters for your life,

  85. and my life.

  86. This is the story of Jesus Christ.

  87. And we began last week by looking at John the Baptist.

  88. We met him in the first half of Luke chapter 3,

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  89. and we saw that John the Baptist was the great preparer,

  90. the great forerunner, if you like,

  91. the voice in the wilderness,

  92. whom God had sent as God had promised

  93. to get people ready for the coming of the Messiah.

  94. And we thought about the fact that John was kind of like a best man.

  95. He didn't want the spotlight to shine on him,

  96. he wanted the spotlight to go over him

  97. to the one who was to come.

  98. That's John the Baptist.

  99. And if John the Baptist,

  100. we thought,

  101. was a bit like a best man,

  102. well here,

  103. verse 21,

  104. Jesus the groom,

  105. steps into the limelight.

  106. Question is,

  107. what will Jesus be like as we meet him here

  108. at the outset of his public ministry?

  109. Well, a few months ago,

  110. I had,

  111. or we had the pleasure rather,

  112. of taking a family holiday down in Cornwall.

  113. Anyone meet to Cornwall?

  114. Keep your hands up.

  115. Have you driven from Edinburgh to Cornwall?

  116. Nan has.

  117. Deb has.

  118. A few of us have.

  119. Okay, can you join with me in telling everybody that it's a long way?

  120. Yeah?

  121. The road, it just keeps on going.

  122. Now, I would love to stand here and tell you that I had 10 hours of sparkling conversation in me on that road trip.

  123. But I don't.

  124. So what do you do when you don't have conversation on a car journey?

  125. You stick on the radio, don't you?

  126. You stick on the radio,

  127. and you listen to what's on there.

  128. My wife, Alex, she's determined to make a cultured man of me.

  129. So now and again, we ditch the football phone in on 5 Live and we head to Radio 4.

  130. So we're listening to Radio 4 on this car journey and we're tuning in to what I think was the Today program on Radio 4.

  131. And it's two days after the Brexit referendum.

  132. And they're having a phone in.

  133. They're having a phone in.

  134. I love phone in.

  135. So they're having a phone in.

  136. And they're inviting callers to phone up and tell the whole listening audience how they are feeling,

  137. their concerns, their thoughts, their doubts.

  138. And we're listening to this phone in.

  139. And we're listening to this one caller who phones in.

  140. The presenter says, what's your concern, caller?

  141. And the caller, as he perceives the world around about him that's changed so much,

  142. not just Brexit, the whole thing, the whole world that he doesn't understand,

  143. his comment is, we're in a mess.

  144. We're in a mess.

  145. The presenter says back to him, what are we going to do about the mess?

  146. And he says, we need a leader.

  147. We need a leader who's going to take us out of our mess.

  148. Now think about that sentence for a minute.

  149. Brexit aside, is that sentence our sentence?

  150. This morning, is that sentence your sentence?

  151. As you look out on the world out there, as you think about the contours of your life,

  152. as you look out on the world, as we see it in our TV screens every day,

  153. the conflict, poverty, famine, the mess of this world.

  154. And then you look at your own heart,

  155. and you don't even know where to begin with the mess that's going on in your own heart

  156. and in your own life.

  157. The thoughts, the words, the deeds.

  158. It's not true that we live in a messy, messy world.

  159. I wonder if you are like me.

  160. Every time I see the mess,

  161. every time I experience the mess,

  162. there's a bit inside me that thinks,

  163. where is the leader who is going to take us out of this mess?

  164. Where is he coming from?

  165. Now what do we need in a leader?

  166. What do we need in a leader?

  167. We need a leader who is not like us.

  168. He's not of the mess.

  169. He is outside the mess.

  170. And he will come in and deliver us from the mess

  171. because he's not tainted by the mess.

  172. And we need a leader who will not just look on at a distance to the mess,

  173. but will come and be involved in our mess.

  174. And we need a leader who will succeed in the mess

  175. where you and I fail every day in the mess.

  176. That's the kind of leader that we need.

  177. So where are we going to find such a leader?

  178. Great question.

  179. I'd argue it's humanity's question ever since the fall in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  180. Where is that king coming from?

  181. Well, here's what we need to understand this morning.

  182. And here's what Luke is doing in these verses.

  183. He is showing us that Jesus is that leader.

  184. Jesus is that leader.

  185. In fact, he's more than a leader.

  186. He's a king.

  187. He's a king who has come down from above,

  188. not to lord it over us,

  189. but to step into our mess and rescue us.

  190. That's what Jesus has come to do.

  191. It's what the angels told the shepherds at Jesus' birth.

  192. Chapter 2, verse 11, if you've got it there.

  193. What do they say?

  194. Today in the town of David, a saviour has been born to you.

  195. It's what Simeon, this devout man that we meet in chapter 2,

  196. waiting on God's Messiah to come.

  197. He meets the baby Jesus and he holds him in his hands

  198. and he exclaims,

  199. I have seen your salvation, God.

  200. Jesus is the saviour of the world.

  201. This is what Luke's trying to be.

  202. He's been dropping the breadcrumbs up to this point of the gospel.

  203. Jesus is the saviour of the world.

  204. So when it comes to finding that leader,

  205. this is what we need to understand this morning.

  206. What is Luke doing?

  207. He's showing us that Jesus fits the bill.

  208. Jesus fits the bill.

  209. Come with me to verse 21 of chapter 3.

  210. And see that Luke shows us that verses 21 and 22,

  211. with Jesus' baptism,

  212. that Jesus has a name that we don't have.

  213. So in these verses, Luke tells us about Jesus' baptism.

  214. John is baptising in the wilderness

  215. and as the crowds of people respond to his message,

  216. as they repent of their sins,

  217. as they turn to God, they are baptised.

  218. And Jesus also is baptised.

  219. Now, let's just pause there for a minute.

  220. Why is Jesus being baptised?

  221. Is he repenting of sins?

  222. Of course he's not.

  223. Jesus is the perfect one.

  224. There's no sins that he needs to repent of.

  225. He's not repenting of sins.

  226. So what is he doing getting baptised?

  227. Well, here is our Saviour Jesus Christ

  228. identifying with sinful men and women.

  229. You see, here is a leader who is getting involved,

  230. who is stepping right into the heart of the mess

  231. of the very people that he came to save.

  232. And as he is baptised,

  233. what does Luke record for us at verse 22?

  234. That the heavens opened

  235. and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus

  236. and the voice comes from heaven,

  237. you are my son.

  238. Who is this man?

  239. He is none other than God's eternal son.

  240. Now, one of my hobbies is reading.

  241. I know it was something you always put in your CV

  242. when you were young

  243. and you never actually were into reading,

  244. but you wanted the employer to know you were into reading.

  245. But I am actually into reading.

  246. So every time I go to a bookshop

  247. and I pick up a book that I want to buy

  248. or I go into Amazon

  249. and I click the thing that lets you see the first few pages,

  250. do you know the thing that I'm looking for every time is?

  251. Is the endorsements page.

  252. I want to see this book.

  253. I want to see who's putting their name to this book.

  254. I want to see who has read this book

  255. and is recommending that I read this book

  256. and purchase this book.

  257. Because if it's a name that I trust

  258. and I know and I respect

  259. and I'm buying that book,

  260. but if it's a name that I don't recognize,

  261. if it's a name that doesn't really mean anything to me,

  262. then I probably will put it back on the shelf.

  263. I'm a guy who's into endorsements

  264. when it comes to buying books.

  265. What is going on in Luke chapter 3?

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  266. Who is endorsing to me the son?

  267. Answer, God is.

  268. This is,

  269. my son is the voice from heaven,

  270. is the cry from heaven.

  271. It's a deliberate echo of the language of Psalm 2,

  272. the great psalm about God's chosen king.

  273. And with that backdrop,

  274. do you see that this baptism here

  275. is less like a kind of religious service?

  276. And actually,

  277. it's a lot more like a king's coronation.

  278. Here is heaven's king,

  279. says the voice from above.

  280. And how does God feel about his son?

  281. He loves his son.

  282. And he is well pleased with his son.

  283. Jesus Christ gets heaven's affection

  284. and heaven's commendation.

  285. Luke is showing us that Jesus,

  286. as we meet him here,

  287. is coming with heaven's endorsement.

  288. And would you notice that

  289. all three members of the Trinity,

  290. of the Godhead,

  291. are involved in this section of Luke's gospel?

  292. They're all involved here

  293. in the plan of salvation.

  294. You see, the truth is here

  295. that God hasn't just advised

  296. about the plan to save men and women

  297. from their mess.

  298. He hasn't just got the ball rolling.

  299. He's not just financing this gig

  300. to save men and women

  301. from their mess.

  302. He's not just an interested party,

  303. an investor,

  304. in the plan to save people

  305. from the mess.

  306. God is the plan

  307. to save people

  308. from their mess.

  309. That is what's going on here

  310. in this section.

  311. Charles Spurgeon said this,

  312. from the depths

  313. of divine compassion

  314. come the gift

  315. of the only begotten son.

  316. That's what's going on here.

  317. God is stepping in.

  318. Here is God's son.

  319. Here is God's eternal king.

  320. You see, our mess,

  321. to solve it,

  322. the leader,

  323. we need a leader

  324. who is not like us.

  325. Here is one who is

  326. God's eternal son,

  327. says Luke.

  328. Here's one who is fully divine.

  329. See, Jesus Christ,

  330. as we meet him here,

  331. he's got a name

  332. that we don't have.

  333. And secondly,

  334. verses 23 to 37

  335. of chapter 3,

  336. the genealogy,

  337. that I'm sure

  338. we've never read

  339. like that before,

  340. Luke shows us

  341. that Jesus has

  342. a lineage

  343. that we do have.

  344. And to help us see that,

  345. Luke tells us

  346. Jesus' family tree.

  347. That's what was going on there

  348. in these verses.

  349. Luke tells us

  350. about Jesus' family tree.

  351. Now why

  352. has Luke

  353. included

  354. a family tree

  355. at this section?

  356. Great question.

  357. Full of great questions

  358. this morning.

  359. Great question.

  360. Why is it there?

  361. Well, I was speaking

  362. to a pastor

  363. the other day

  364. and he was telling me

  365. a wonderful story

  366. about a group

  367. of Bible translators

  368. who were working

  369. in the Philippines.

  370. And these Bible translators

  371. were working

  372. to translate

  373. Luke's gospel

  374. from English

  375. into the native tongue

  376. of the people

  377. who they were amongst.

  378. Days passed,

  379. months passed,

  380. they were slogging

  381. away at this,

  382. translating it

  383. and reading it

  384. every day to the people.

  385. And if truth be told,

  386. they had not seen

  387. one single ounce

  388. of inspiration

  389. from the people.

  390. They weren't that

  391. interested in Luke's gospel.

  392. They'd almost translated

  393. the whole thing

  394. except they hadn't

  395. translated this part

  396. of Luke's gospel.

  397. They hadn't translated it

  398. because why would people

  399. need to know

  400. about a bunch of names?

  401. It's probably what we thought

  402. this morning

  403. as we came to this passage.

  404. Why do people

  405. need to know?

  406. And so they thought

  407. to themselves,

  408. we've got nothing to lose,

  409. we may as well

  410. translate the genealogy.

  411. And would you know it,

  412. as they read this out

  413. to the people,

  414. as they translated it

  415. and read it out,

  416. the people applauded,

  417. they clapped

  418. and they cheered.

  419. Fascinating.

  420. Why did they do that?

  421. Well, people were hearing

  422. for the first time

  423. in their native language,

  424. in their native tongue,

  425. that Jesus Christ

  426. was not a mythical figure.

  427. He was one

  428. who had a family tree

  429. and was one

  430. who was truly

  431. one of us.

  432. Maybe that's a word

  433. for some of us

  434. this morning.

  435. But here is one

  436. who can sympathize

  437. with us

  438. in every single weakness.

  439. He is God

  440. in the flesh.

  441. He is one

  442. who is unstained

  443. by the mess,

  444. yes,

  445. but what a glorious truth

  446. that he is one

  447. who can sympathize

  448. with those

  449. who are living

  450. in the mess

  451. because he knows

  452. what it means

  453. to be in the mess.

  454. You see,

  455. Luke is telling us

  456. that Jesus Christ

  457. is not just a savior

  458. for a certain demographic,

  459. for a certain group

  460. of people.

  461. Jesus Christ

  462. is the savior

  463. of the entire human race.

  464. For all those men

  465. and women around the globe,

  466. boys and girls,

  467. who would come

  468. and put their faith

  469. and trust in him

  470. as their savior,

  471. he is their savior.

  472. That's what Luke

  473. is telling us there.

  474. But if that's all

  475. we take away

  476. from that genealogy,

  477. then I think

  478. we're probably

  479. just falling

  480. a little bit short

  481. of the entirety

  482. of doing Luke's,

  483. of what Luke

  484. is trying to do there.

  485. Look at the last name

  486. on the list

  487. at verse 38.

  488. The son of Adam.

  489. Now why is Adam

  490. in there?

  491. Well, of course,

  492. it's with Adam's rebellion,

  493. Adam's failure

  494. in the Garden of Eden

  495. to worship God fully,

  496. Adam's failure

  497. to resist the lure

  498. of Satan

  499. that sin enters

  500. the creation equation,

  501. and what God

  502. had made

  503. as good,

  504. as perfect,

  505. is now marred

  506. with brokenness,

  507. frustration,

  508. and mess.

  509. And we read it

  510. in Genesis 3.15

  511. that God addresses

  512. Satan,

  513. and what does he promise?

  514. He promises

  515. that one of Adam's

  516. descendants

  517. is going to come

  518. and end

  519. the reign of sin.

  520. He's going to defeat

  521. Satan

  522. and defeat

  523. his power.

  524. Genesis 3.15,

  525. what do we see?

  526. That God promises

  527. the serpent crusher

  528. who will come

  529. from Adam's line,

  530. and God says

  531. to the serpent,

  532. he will crush

  533. your heads,

  534. and you will

  535. bruise his heel.

  536. So from that point

  537. on in the Bible story,

  538. we're asking ourselves

  539. the question,

  540. where is this

  541. serpent crusher?

  542. And in passing,

  543. notice just one other

  544. name on this list.

  545. Notice David

  546. at verse 31,

  547. Israel's greatest

  548. and most celebrated

  549. king,

  550. and God had promised

  551. David in 2 Samuel 7,

  552. it's recorded for us,

  553. where David is thinking

  554. about building a temple

  555. for God,

  556. and what does God say?

  557. No, David,

  558. I'm going to build

  559. a temple for you.

  560. I'm going to build

  561. my temple,

  562. and I will ensure

  563. that one of your

  564. descendants

  565. will establish

  566. the kingly throne,

  567. and will sit on that

  568. throne and rule

  569. forever.

  570. And David dies,

  571. and his son Solomon

  572. dies,

  573. and as the kingdom

  574. of Israel crumbles,

  575. we're left thinking

  576. to ourselves

  577. as the readers,

  578. where is this

  579. promised king?

  580. Where is this king

  581. who will come

  582. from David's line

  583. and who will sit

  584. on the throne

  585. of David as a king,

  586. God's king,

  587. and do that forever?

  588. So let's pull Adam

  589. and David together.

  590. What is Luke telling us?

  591. That Jesus

  592. is in that line.

  593. That Jesus

  594. is that promised

  595. serpent crusher.

  596. That Jesus

  597. is the descendant

  598. of David

  599. who will rule

  600. as a king forever.

  601. Jesus Christ

  602. is God's

  603. promised king.

  604. When God

  605. promises something,

  606. God delivers.

  607. See,

  608. we need a leader

  609. who is

  610. not like us,

  611. but we need

  612. a leader

  613. who is

  614. like us.

  615. Here is one

  616. who is

  617. fully divine,

  618. says Luke,

  619. and here is one

  620. who is fully human.

  621. Jesus

  622. fits

  623. the bill.

  624. He is a name

  625. that we don't have

  626. and he has

  627. a lineage

  628. that we do have.

  629. And thirdly,

  630. Luke wants us

  631. to know

  632. that Jesus

  633. is the king

  634. who has

  635. the victory

  636. that we need,

  637. that we must have.

  638. Chapter 4,

  639. verses 1 to 13.

  640. And it's no coincidence

  641. that Luke takes us

  642. from thinking about

  643. Adam,

  644. in verse 38

  645. of chapter 3,

  646. straight into

  647. the temptation

  648. in chapter 4.

  649. Adam,

  650. in the garden

  651. of Eden,

  652. he lost

  653. his battle

  654. with Satan.

  655. He succumbed

  656. to the lure

  657. of sin

  658. and as a result

  659. he is banished

  660. from the garden

  661. and he's sent

  662. into the wilderness

  663. as it were.

  664. That's where

  665. mankind's been

  666. ever since,

  667. in the wilderness.

  668. And so where

  669. is Jesus here?

  670. He's not in a garden.

  671. Actually,

  672. he's in the wilderness.

  673. And he's there

  674. by choice,

  675. will you notice,

  676. in passing.

  677. He's there

  678. by the Spirit's

  679. leading.

  680. He's not there

  681. by accident.

  682. He's not there

  683. hitting his faulty

  684. sat-nav saying,

  685. I knew I should have

  686. updated the software

  687. before I left

  688. this morning.

  689. He's there

  690. by choice.

  691. You see,

  692. yes,

  693. we see Jesus

  694. on the defensive

  695. here,

  696. but that defensive

  697. is in the context

  698. of him being

  699. on the offensive.

  700. Jesus is there

  701. by choice.

  702. And what is he doing?

  703. Well,

  704. there's a purpose

  705. to what he's doing.

  706. Luke wants us

  707. to see that

  708. Jesus goes

  709. to the wilderness

  710. to defeat

  711. the enemy,

  712. to win the battle,

  713. to undo the effects

  714. of the battle

  715. that Adam lost.

  716. And the battle

  717. that all humanity

  718. ever since,

  719. and the battle

  720. that you

  721. and I

  722. lose

  723. every moment

  724. of every day.

  725. and Jesus

  726. goes there

  727. to take on

  728. the greatest

  729. enemy

  730. and to defeat

  731. him

  732. by defeating

  733. him,

  734. rescuing people

  735. from the position

  736. and the mess

  737. that sin

  738. has left us

  739. in.

  740. And this battle

  741. sees the devil

  742. tempt Jesus.

  743. We get three

  744. little accounts

  745. of it.

  746. Firstly,

  747. verse 3,

  748. to a hungry

  749. entire Jesus.

  750. Look with me.

  751. What is the devil?

  752. What does he go for?

  753. If you are

  754. the son of God,

  755. let's turn

  756. these stones

  757. into bread.

  758. Now what's the devil

  759. up to there?

  760. Well, he's questioning

  761. Jesus' identity,

  762. isn't he?

  763. Has anyone ever

  764. questioned your identity

  765. of something that

  766. you know is true

  767. about you

  768. and your first

  769. reaction is,

  770. yes I am?

  771. We don't see Jesus

  772. doing that here.

  773. What's the devil

  774. doing?

  775. He's trying to get

  776. Jesus to doubt

  777. God's provision

  778. and doubt

  779. God's goodness.

  780. You see,

  781. Adam in the garden,

  782. he had absolutely

  783. everything going

  784. for him.

  785. He had absolutely

  786. everything that he

  787. could ever want

  788. and yet he

  789. and Eve,

  790. they doubted

  791. the goodness

  792. of God.

  793. What did the devil

  794. say then?

  795. Did God really say?

  796. As if to say,

  797. can you really

  798. trust God?

  799. Adam who had

  800. everything going

  801. for him,

  802. Jesus here has

  803. quite literally

  804. absolutely nothing

  805. going for him.

  806. And what does he do?

  807. He trusts

  808. in the goodness

  809. and he trusts

  810. in the provision

  811. of God.

  812. You see,

  813. Jesus will not

  814. fail where Adam

  815. failed and where

  816. you fail and where

  817. I fail.

  818. What does he say?

  819. God is good

  820. and his word

  821. is good

  822. and man shall

  823. not live by bread

  824. alone.

  825. And the second

  826. temptation,

  827. verses 6 to 7,

  828. what does the devil

  829. say?

  830. If you worship me,

  831. all authority and

  832. splendor will be

  833. yours.

  834. All authority

  835. and splendor.

  836. And I'll be honest,

  837. I found it quite

  838. difficult this week

  839. understanding what's

  840. going on here.

  841. I'm indebted to a

  842. guy called

  843. Sinclair Ferguson

  844. for helping me to

  845. see what's going

  846. on here.

  847. Because the devil,

  848. as he offers Jesus

  849. all authority and

  850. splendor,

  851. not only does the

  852. devil not have

  853. all authority and

  854. splendor,

  855. but that's already

  856. all authority and

  857. splendor is already

  858. coming to Jesus

  859. later on.

  860. He knows it's

  861. coming,

  862. he knows it's his,

  863. so what's the devil

  864. trying to do here?

  865. Well, he's trying

  866. to offer Jesus a

  867. shortcut to all

  868. authority and

  869. splendor.

  870. You see, that road

  871. to all authority

  872. and splendor,

  873. it is a road that

  874. goes via the cross,

  875. not around the

  876. cross.

  877. Devil offers Jesus

  878. a shortcut to that

  879. authority and

  880. splendor.

  881. Jesus says,

  882. no, I know what

  883. I've come to do.

  884. Jesus will not

  885. fail where Adam

  886. failed and where

  887. you fail and where

  888. I fail.

  889. Worship the Lord,

  890. your God,

  891. and serve him

  892. only, says

  893. Jesus.

  894. Third temptation

  895. at verse 9,

  896. if you are the

  897. Son of God,

  898. throw yourself down

  899. from here.

  900. After all, is that

  901. not what God's

  902. promised in the

  903. scriptures that you

  904. love to quote to

  905. me?

  906. But no, Jesus will

  907. not fail where

  908. Adam failed and

  909. where you fail and

  910. where I fail.

  911. What does he say?

  912. Do not put the

  913. Lord, your God,

  914. to the test.

  915. Jesus wins in the

  916. wilderness.

  917. He wins in the

  918. wilderness.

  919. Praise God that he

  920. wins in the

  921. wilderness because it

  922. is massively

  923. significant, as we'll

  924. come on to see in

  925. just a second.

  926. But incidentally,

  927. notice in passing

  928. how Jesus wins in

  929. the wilderness.

  930. I don't think that's

  931. the immediate purpose

  932. of why Luke is

  933. recording this for us

  934. here, but we can't

  935. help but notice it

  936. as we read it.

  937. What does Jesus arm

  938. himself with?

  939. How does Jesus

  940. defend himself?

  941. Every time he gives

  942. an answer, what does

  943. he say?

  944. Verse 4,

  945. it is written.

  946. Verse 8, it is

  947. written.

  948. Verse 12, it is

  949. said or it is

  950. written.

  951. Jesus defends

  952. himself with

  953. scripture.

  954. Or more

  955. particularly in this

  956. case, he defends

  957. himself with

  958. Deuteronomy.

  959. Jesus knows what

  960. God has said.

  961. And Jesus knows

  962. what God has not

  963. said.

  964. Jesus knows the

  965. real deal and

  966. Jesus knows the

  967. fake.

  968. I was here this

  969. week about the

  970. U.S.

  971. Secret Service.

  972. I've never been

  973. part of the U.S.

  974. Secret Service, but

  975. I heard a story this

  976. week that I didn't

  977. know.

  978. U.S.

  979. Secret Service, I've

  980. got two jobs.

  981. Firstly, defend the

  982. president.

  983. Secondly, defend the

  984. currency.

  985. Did anybody actually

  986. know that?

  987. Nope, we didn't know

  988. that either.

  989. Great, we're learning

  990. stuff this morning.

  991. Defend the

  992. president, defend

  993. the currency.

  994. How do you

  995. recognize fake

  996. money?

  997. How do you

  998. recognize a faulty

  999. transaction?

  1000. By being so in

  1001. touch with the

  1002. real deal that you

  1003. spot the fake a

  1004. mile off.

  1005. Same for us as

  1006. Christians, is it

  1007. not?

  1008. As we take our

  1009. stand against the

  1010. schemes of the

  1011. devil who would

  1012. seek to steer us

  1013. off course and away

  1014. from worshiping our

  1015. God.

  1016. How do we know

  1017. what God has said?

  1018. By immersing

  1019. ourselves in the

  1020. scriptures.

  1021. By getting our

  1022. noses in the

  1023. Bibles.

  1024. Because it's not

1025. going to go in by

  1026. osmosis, is it?

  1027. It's not like if I

1028. hold it there and I

  1029. just stare at it

  1030. funny that it's

  1031. going to go in.

1032. We need to work at

  1033. this.

  1034. Because Jesus worked

  1035. at this.

1036. We need to get this

  1037. into our minds.

  1038. We read God's

  1039. words.

  1040. We meditate on

  1041. God's word.

  1042. We devote ourselves

  1043. to learning God's

  1044. words.

1045. And we find times in

  1046. our massively busy

  1047. schedules to make

  1048. that happen.

  1049. Pull out all the

  1050. stops to make that

  1051. happen.

  1052. Read it with

  1053. friends.

  1054. That's why home

  1055. groups, small

  1056. groups are such a

  1057. vital part of what

1058. we do here is we

  1059. encourage each other

  1060. with God's words.

  1061. Find ways of getting

  1062. God's word into your

  1063. bloodstream.

1064. It was said of the

  1065. old Puritan John

  1066. Bunyan, most famous

  1067. for writing Pilgrim's

  1068. Progress, that his

  1069. peers used to joke

  1070. that if you pricked

  1071. him, he would bleed

  1072. the Bible.

  1073. That's what they

1074. used to say of that

  1075. man.

1076. Would that not be a

  1077. wonderful thing to

  1078. someone to say about

  1079. you?

1080. But more than that, I

  1081. think that's exactly

1082. what we can see and

  1083. say about Jesus here.

  1084. That he breathed

  1085. scripture.

  1086. That he lived it.

  1087. He breathed it.

  1088. He trusted it.

1089. And when trial came, he

1090. wielded it and used it.

  1091. And where Adam was

  1092. faithless, and where you

  1093. and I are faithless,

  1094. Jesus was faithful.

  1095. Where Adam failed, Jesus

  1096. succeeded.

1097. You see, that is what

1098. Jesus has come to do.

1099. To live a life of

  1100. worship to God, to

  1101. defeat the schemes of

1102. the devil, to defeat the

  1103. power of sin.

1104. And by doing that, to

  1105. deliver his people from

  1106. the rain of darkness.

1107. You see, Jesus, by his

  1108. perfect obedience, he

1109. wins the victory that his

  1110. people needs.

1111. And when I trust in him,

1112. when we trust in him as

1113. our king, living for us,

  1114. pleading for us before

  1115. the Father, his victory

  1116. becomes our victory.

1117. This is the king that we

  1118. need.

1119. This is the leader that we

  1120. need.

1121. Here is Jesus, not like us

1122. of the mess, but one with

  1123. us in the mess.

1124. And one who has come to

1125. win the victory that you

  1126. and I couldn't win for

  1127. ourselves.

1128. Here is God's king, says

  1129. Luke, as he introduces

  1130. them here.

1131. You know, I was telling

1132. you just about Radio 4.

  1133. Let's go back to Radio 4.

  1134. I love Radio 4 now.

  1135. Radio 4 caller.

1136. He called up and he said,

  1137. there's a mess.

  1138. We need a leader who's

1139. going to take us out of

  1140. the mess.

  1141. Well, the presenter turns

  1142. around the very next

1143. question and says, who is

  1144. that leader?

1145. I wonder what you would

  1146. answer to that question.

  1147. Who is that leader?

  1148. Caller said, don't know.

  1149. All I know is that we're

1150. in a mess and we need a

1151. leader who's going to take

1152. us out of the mess.

1153. Let me ask you this morning,

1154. are you in the hunt for a

  1155. leader?

1156. Are you aware of your mess?

1157. Do you feel the pain of

1158. living in a messy world?

1159. Luke says, here is the king

1160. who has come to deliver you

  1161. from that mess.

  1162. Trust in him.

  1163. Come to him.

1164. I was reading this story

1165. this week in this book by

  1166. Tim Keller called Walking

1167. with God through pain and

  1168. suffering.

  1169. It's a chunky book.

  1170. It's got a cracking cover.

  1171. Great endorsement.

  1172. It's worth a read.

1173. Reading this book by Tim

1174. Keller this week and he's

1175. got real stories from real

1176. people at the end of his

1177. chapters as he teases out

1178. what the Bible is saying

  1179. about this stuff.

1180. You can come and borrow it

1181. off me when we finish.

1182. Let me read this story to

1183. you from a woman called

  1184. Mary.

  1185. Mary's life, I'm presuming

  1186. she's American, I'm not

  1187. sure.

  1188. Mary's life is a life of

  1189. mess.

  1190. From dysfunctional parents.

  1191. From violent partners.

1192. You can read it here.

  1193. A string of broken

  1194. relationships.

1195. Her own family, her own

  1196. children being arrested.

1197. And on top of that, complex

  1198. and terminal health problems.

  1199. Mary's life is a mess.

1200. Some of it are a result of

  1201. our own sin.

1202. Some of it are a result of

  1203. just experiencing the pain

1204. of living in a messy and

  1205. broken world.

1206. I'd love to sit here, stand

1207. here and read you this

  1208. Cinderella story.

  1209. Like that's how it's going

  1210. to end.

1211. Like she tries on the

  1212. golden stripper.

  1213. She meets the guy.

1214. She goes to the ball and

  1215. everything's happy ever

  1216. after.

1217. But this is what Mary

  1218. writes.

  1219. Life has not changed.

1220. But God is changing me.

1221. I have come to believe that

1222. life will not always be as

  1223. it is now.

1224. I find even more comfort in

1225. being able to stop focusing

  1226. on all the heartache.

1227. And instead focus on the one

1228. who will someday take that

  1229. heartache away completely and

  1230. forever.

1231. I spent my entire life looking

1232. for and never finding a

1233. recipe to go from despair to

  1234. hope.

1235. It did not come from anything

  1236. I did or didn't do.

  1237. No.

1238. Hope comes not in the

1239. solution to the problem but

1240. on focusing on Christ, the

  1241. one who facilitates the

  1242. change.

1243. You see Mary knows what it's

1244. like to live in a messy

  1245. world.

1246. And Luke tells us this

1247. morning that we are messed

  1248. up people.

1249. We are messed up people living

1250. messed up lives in a mess

  1251. messed up world.

1252. But here is Jesus Christ, the

1253. leader who fits the bill and

1254. the leader who has come as

1255. God's king, the savior of the

1256. world to come and to rescue us

  1257. from our mess.

  1258. And Luke says, come.

  1259. Come to Jesus Christ.

1260. Come and see him for who he is.

1261. Come to him as you are and come

1262. to him and say, Jesus be my king.

1263. Save me from my mess.

1264. Here is God's leader, says Luke.

1265. And just before we stand to sing

1266. our final song, let's just have a

  1267. moment of quiet.

1268. And let's pause and just reflect on

1269. what we've been hearing this morning

  1270. from God's word.

1271. Maybe for many of us, your heart's

1272. cry is, thank you, Jesus.

1273. Thank you, Jesus, for what you've

  1274. done for me.

1275. Maybe for some of us this morning,

1276. a cry of our hearts is, I need you,

  1277. Jesus.

1278. But whoever you are, whatever's going

1279. on in your life this now, just take

1280. this moment of quiet and bring your

1281. prayers to our great God this

  1282. morning.

1283. Mercy and grace are mine.

  1284. Forgiven is my sin.

1285. Jesus, my only hope, the savior of

  1286. the world.

1287. Great is the Lord, we cry.

1288. God, let your kingdom come.

1289. Your word has let me see.

1290. Thank you for saving me.

1291. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being the

1292. savior who came to rescue us from our

  1293. mess.

1294. By your spirit working in us, would you

1295. this week help us to know you more,

1296. help us to trust you more, and help us

  1297. to love you more.

1298. Our gracious father, this is our prayer

  1299. in our savior's name.

  1300. Amen.

  1301. Amen.
