  1. Good evening everyone. I think that is the best Amen I've ever heard in a long time.

  2. I've been to Malawi and they love an Amen as well, but that was superb, Alistair.

  3. If you have your Bibles, Romans 16 is where we are this evening and we're bringing home this Letter to the Romans.

  4. This series that we've been in for since, it feels like about 1993, I don't know about anyone else,

  5. but we've been in here a long time, but it's been fantastic.

  6. And it's an absolute joy for me and it's absolute joy for us as a church to finish this letter, this glorious letter.

  7. So Romans chapter 16 and verse 17.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  8. And let me pray and let's ask that God would be so gracious and kind to us as we come to his words this evening.

  9. Let's pray.

  10. Oh, our gracious Father, you are so, so good to us.

  11. And Lord, we ask now as we finish this letter that you would encourage us and that you would equip us

  12. and that you would inflame us to take your gospel, the good news about your son, the risen Lord Jesus Christ, to the world.

  13. And this is our prayer that you would help us now because we ask in his name. Amen.

  14. So a few weeks ago, I had the privilege of doing a wedding up in Inverness.

  15. And I've lived in Scotland my whole life, but I'm really ashamed to say that is the first time I've ever been to the Highlands.

  16. First time I've ever been to the Highlands.

  17. But it was a thoroughly lovely experience.

  18. Glorious weather.

  19. The colours of summer are everywhere.

  20. And I've got the view where I'm looking down on the Murray Firth.

  21. I think that's what it's called.

  22. I looked into it, the Murray Firth.

  23. And there is the sun shining on the water.

  24. And it is absolutely glorious.

  25. I mean, I feel like I'm in a Visit Scotland video campaign here.

  26. It's glorious.

  27. And we're staying at this lovely hotel the night before the wedding.

  28. And after the rehearsal, we come back to our hotel room.

  29. And it's quite late.

  30. So we decide we quite want something to eat.

  31. But we can't be bothered going out again.

  32. So we're going to eat in the hotel.

  33. But at that time of night, we go down to the hotel.

  34. And we discover that the only thing you can eat at that time of night is fine dining.

  35. So we thought, well, we're only in Inverness once.

  36. So let's go for it.

  37. Let's go out and let's go fine dining.

  38. So after a while, and I'll get this on the screen for you here because this is good.

  39. After a while, I'm studying this menu for a while.

  40. I'm studying this menu.

  41. And I look and I think, I don't have a clue what half of these things are.

  42. But I'm just going to go for it.

  43. And I ordered slow cooked pork belly, pork fillet, fennel puree, rumbledy thumps, bok choy,

  44. and all topped with just a glistening of apple cider.

  45. Now, you're probably thinking to yourself two things.

  46. Firstly, what is a rumbledy thump?

  47. And I'll be honest, I still don't know what a rumbledy thump is.

  48. The second question, how does he know that off the top of his head?

  49. And the reason I know that off the top of my head is because it was awesome.

  50. It was so good.

  51. I mean, my taste buds were having a party like they've never seen before.

  52. It was absolutely incredible.

  53. And the reason I knew during the meal that I was having a good time

  54. was that because I actually stepped back and I put my fork down

  55. just so I could savor it and take it in.

  56. Now, I'm from a family of boys.

  57. We didn't really do put your fork down.

  58. It was more shovel it in.

  59. It wasn't as much fine dining as time dining.

  60. And if you weren't quick, you didn't eat.

  61. So this is the meal.

  62. And I'm loving this meal.

  63. And I come to the end of this meal.

  64. And at the corner of the plate, I eat up a little bit of pork fillet.

  65. And I think I want to finish there.

  66. It's where I want to finish.

  67. So it goes into my mouth.

  68. Awesome.

  69. Absolutely incredible.

  70. So incredible was it that I turn into this kind of pork fillet, pork belly evangelist.

  71. And I start telling everybody that I meet about how amazing this pork fillet was.

  72. Alex, who's sitting across from me from my wife, I'm telling her about how incredible it was.

  73. The people I met the next day at the wedding, I'm telling them how incredible it was.

  74. My friends and family, I'm telling them how incredible it was.

  75. And here I am tonight.

  76. And I'm telling you how incredible this meal was.

  77. So this week, I'm in Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  78. And I'm asking myself, how should I feel?

  79. How should we feel as a church as we leave this book of Romans?

  80. No, how should I feel?

  81. But also, what should I do?

  82. What should we do as we leave the book of Romans?

  83. I mean, I think if we close it shut tonight and think, oh, that was nice.

  84. On it goes the shelf again.

  85. I think we've kind of missed it.

  86. How should we feel and what should we do as we leave this book of Romans?

  87. It occurred to me this week, it's probably a bit like that meal, isn't it?

  88. In fact, I would say that the whole book of Romans has felt a bit like that meal.

  89. I mean, there's been times where I've wanted to put down my fork and think, I just want to savor that.

  90. I just want to take that in.

  91. I mean, we got to Romans chapter 8, which I think is my favorite chapter in the Bible.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  92. I just want to take it in.

  93. But the question now as we come to the end and as we take our final bite,

  94. our final mouthful, as it were, of this letter,

  95. and as the original readers of this letter, as they take their final mouthful,

  96. what are they supposed to feel and what are they supposed to do?

  97. And what I want us to see this evening is that as they finish this letter,

  98. Paul wants the last taste on their lips to be one of praise.

  99. Praise.

  100. The book of Romans, the letter to the Romans, I should say rather, is meant to inspire doxology.

  101. It's meant to inspire, that's a big word meaning just praise of God.

  102. That's what it's meant to inspire.

  103. It's meant to inspire praise of God and it's meant to inspire mission.

  104. To take this glorious news of Jesus Christ, this gospel, to the whole world.

  105. Because it tastes so good.

  106. In other words, God is awesome.

  107. And as my mind, as it tries to comprehend how good he is, how gracious he is,

  108. as my heart is gripped by grace,

  109. oh, I want to worship him with everything that I have.

  110. And I want to tell everybody that I meet about his goodness.

  111. Now here's what I want us to see just really quickly this evening as we finish this letter,

  112. as we finish our Romans meal,

  113. the taste that these readers are left with,

  114. and the taste I think we want to be left with,

  115. this praise taste, this taste of praise, it's got three flavors to it.

  116. And as they take their final mouthful,

  117. as those three flavors, as they hit the palate,

  118. they're meant to inspire praise.

  119. And Paul wants them to know and go.

  120. So what Paul is saying is,

  121. let the praise of God,

  122. let the praise of God propel you to go and proclaim the greatness of God.

  123. Now, are you ready for this?

  124. Let's forget about the PowerPoint for a minute, okay?

  125. It's a cracker, but we can wait for it.

  126. I can do it without it.

  127. Here's the first flavor.

  128. Now, if you've got it there,

  129. look at verses 17 to 20.

  130. Verses 17 to 20,

  131. the first flavor of this praise taste is the church.

  132. And Paul is saying to them in these verses

  133. that the church is the miracle worth fighting for.

  134. Now, what is the miracle?

  135. Well, scan your eye over the first part of chapter 16,

  136. which John so beautifully and helpfully took us through last week.

  137. Now, what do we see?

  138. We see Paul give us a long list of names.

  139. These are the people who are in this Roman church.

  140. And Paul is effectively saying,

  141. would you say hello to them for me?

  142. That's what he's saying.

  143. Would you greet them?

  144. Now, is that just a bunch of names?

  145. That's what we were considering last week.

  146. Well, no.

  147. It is so much more to it than that.

  148. Just look at these names.

  149. Here are Jewish people.

  150. Here are the names of Greek people.

  151. Here are the names of rich people.

  152. Here are the names of poor people.

  153. Here are the names of free people.

  154. Here are the names of slaves.

  155. Here are female names.

  156. Here are male names.

  157. Here is a different church.

  158. But here is one church.

  159. That is the beauty of what God has done through Jesus Christ.

  160. Where the world would look at this group of people and say,

  161. where the world would look at this people and say,

  162. different and irreconcilable,

  163. Paul wants them to know and Paul wants them to see

  164. that because of the gospel,

  165. because they have Jesus as their Lord,

  166. whoever they are,

  167. whatever they do,

  168. wherever they are from,

  169. their common life in Jesus Christ

  170. makes them one.

  171. One.

  172. And look,

  173. if you've got it there,

  174. chapter 15 and verse 5,

  175. just flick back one page.

  176. Or if you've got a really small Bible,

  177. maybe it's half a page.

  178. Paul writes this,

  179. chapter 15 and verse 5.

  180. May the God of endurance and encouragement

  181. grant you to live in such harmony with one another,

  182. in accord with Christ Jesus,

  183. that together you may with one voice,

  184. what are they going to do with that one voice?

  185. Please glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  186. Now you see why we were singing that last song,

  187. weren't you?

  188. That's why we were singing that last song.

  189. These people God has called together,

  190. not just to sip tea and play happy families,

  191. but he's called them together with a purpose,

  192. to be a worshipping community

  193. that's on mission for the living God,

  194. declaring his greatness to the watching world.

  195. And as people see that community in action,

  196. as they see unity and diversity,

  197. what a powerful witness

  198. to the transforming power of the gospel

  199. to the watching world.

  200. Now I used to live for a few years in Bristol,

  201. in the southwest of England.

  202. And the thing about Bristol is it's a very multicultural city.

  203. For me,

  204. I'd spent my whole life in Edinburgh and Glasgow,

  205. and a bit in Aberdeen as well,

  206. whole life in Scotland.

  207. And so when I came to Bristol,

  208. I was amazed about just how many different people

  209. were in Bristol.

  210. In fact,

  211. remember when I moved there,

  212. one of the estate agents who I asked to kind of

  213. suss it out for me,

  214. I lived in this area called Montpellier,

  215. which was on the border of St. Paul's,

  216. and she told me that it was bohemian and earthy.

  217. Now I don't know what that means.

  218. I think it means it's a bit rough and ready.

  219. So this is the area that I lived in.

  220. And at the bottom of my street,

  221. I had this junction,

  222. and I had a Somalian community here.

  223. I had a Jamaican community here.

  224. There was an Indian community over here.

  225. There was an English community around it all.

  226. And then there was a token Scot in the midst as well.

  227. So this was what Bristol was like.

  228. And I heard a story when I was down there

  229. about one of the local churches

  230. in one of these local communities.

  231. And one day, the local MP,

  232. he'd heard about their work,

  233. and he goes to visit one of their Sunday services.

  234. And he walks in,

  235. and what does he see?

  236. He sees different people,

  237. different skin colours,

  238. different accents,

  239. dressed differently.

  240. And what are these different people doing?

  241. Well, they're laughing,

  242. and they're smiling,

  243. and they're singing,

  244. and they're praying,

  245. and they're hugging,

  246. and they're praising,

  247. and they're gathering,

  248. and they're doing it all as one.

  249. And he sees the beauty of unity in diversity.

  250. He sees the church.

  251. And the story goes something like this.

  252. He goes up to one of the leaders of that church,

  253. and he remarks,

  254. he said,

  255. all these years,

  256. I've been spending millions of pounds

  257. trying to get people from that area

  258. to talk to people from that area,

  259. let alone live alongside them.

  260. And I come in here,

  261. and I see that you do it for free.

  262. What does he see?

  263. He saw unity in diversity.

  264. He saw the beauty of the church.

  265. And so as Paul lays out this list,

  266. as he talks about the implications

  267. of what God has done for them

  268. in and through Christ

  269. by creating one new man,

  270. in Christ,

  271. smashing down all the barriers

  272. that kept them apart,

  273. he wants to see

  274. that that is the miracle worth fighting for.

  275. And so in these verses here,

  276. Paul is telling them

  277. to do all that they can

  278. to protect that miracle

  279. for the glory of God.

  280. Now, how are they going to protect

  281. that miracle?

  282. Well, they're going to do it

  283. by protecting and uniting

  284. around the gospel message

  285. that is brought around

  286. the miracle in the first place.

  287. Now, remember what Paul had said,

  288. Paul's saying,

  289. right back at the beginning

  290. of this letter,

  291. chapter 1, verse 16.

  292. The power of God.

  293. Where is the power of God?

  294. It's in the gospel.

  295. The Greek word there,

  296. dinamos,

  297. it literally means

  298. the explosive power of God.

  299. It's to be found

  300. in the gospel message.

  301. So you can understand

  302. that if you take away,

  303. if you start to dilute

  304. that gospel message,

  305. then you're going to rid

  306. the gospel of its power.

  307. Because what does Paul envisage

  308. is going to happen

  309. in these,

  310. to this church?

  311. People are going to come

  312. into their midst

  313. and they're going to try

  314. and twist

  315. and distort

  316. that gospel message.

  317. What does he say

  318. at verse 17?

  319. watch out

  320. for these people.

  321. What will they try

  322. and do?

  323. They will try

  324. and cause divisions.

  325. They will put up obstacles.

  326. They will pitch

  327. to you untruths.

  328. And they will try

  329. and deceive you.

  330. And how are they going

  331. to do it?

  332. They're going to do it

  333. by smooth talk

  334. and flattery.

  335. Now, we don't know

  336. what that deception was.

  337. We don't know exactly

  338. what it was.

  339. But it's not too hard

  340. to imagine, is it?

  341. A scenario where

  342. a church of, you know,

  343. devout Jews come along

  344. and start teaching

  345. this church that,

  346. yeah, Paul, he's a nice guy

  347. but sometimes he's, you know,

  348. gets things messed up

  349. and actually you do need

  350. to obey the Jewish laws

  351. to be a good Christian.

  352. And you can imagine

  353. how something of that

  354. would happen.

  355. But whatever the teaching is,

  356. how are they going

  357. to recognize it

  358. that it's false?

  359. Because it's going to

  360. fly in the face

  361. of everything

  362. that Paul has been

  363. outlining in this letter

  364. so far.

  365. This is the gospel,

  366. says Paul.

  367. This is the gospel

  368. in Romans.

  369. Protect yourselves,

  370. protect your church

  371. by protecting

  372. the gospel message

  373. and watch out

  374. for one another

  375. as you do that.

  376. And so,

  377. with danger

  378. always on the horizon

  379. for this church,

  380. what does Paul

  381. want them to do?

  382. Notice three little phrases.

  383. Firstly,

  384. at verse 19,

  385. what does he say?

  386. He talks about

  387. your obedience.

  388. He's called them

  389. at chapter,

  390. beginning of chapter 12

  391. to live a life

  392. of worship to God.

  393. to make their lives

  394. both individually

  395. and corporately

  396. all about being

  397. a living sacrifice

  398. and how are they

  399. going to do that?

  400. Well,

  401. they're going to be

  402. radical in how

  403. they obey.

  404. And he commends

  405. them for that.

  406. Do you see that

  407. in verse 19?

  408. He rejoices

  409. that he knows

  410. that he's heard

  411. that these guys

  412. have a reputation

  413. for being obedient.

  414. Saying,

  415. no,

  416. I'm not going to

  417. go my own way.

  418. I'm not going to

  419. just go with the world

  420. on this one.

  421. I'm going to go

  422. with God.

  423. I'm going to

  424. be radically

  425. different here.

  426. I'm going to

  427. go with God's

  428. word and what

  429. he's said.

  430. I'm going to

  431. honour him

  432. with my life.

  433. And I'm not

  434. going to bow

  435. like everyone

  436. else to what

  437. the world

  438. says.

  439. It's not an

  440. incredible thing

  441. if you just

  442. pause there for a

  443. minute to be

  444. known for as

  445. a church.

  446. Radical

  447. obedience.

  448. And the thing

  449. about everyday

  450. obedience is that

  451. it's not glamorous,

  452. is it?

  453. We're not going

  454. to get a call

  455. from Peter Jackson

  456. the next day

  457. after you've

  458. been obedient

  459. to something

  460. and saying,

  461. hey, listen,

  462. could we make

  463. a motion picture,

  464. a bio doc about

  465. your life and how

  466. you've been

  467. obedient?

  468. We're not going

  469. to get that

  470. call.

  471. Because that

  472. doesn't sell to

  473. Hollywood, does it?

  474. It's not going

  475. to get us book

  476. deals.

  477. It's not going

  478. to get us

  479. attention.

  480. But here is the

  481. encouragement from

  482. these verses.

  483. That everyday

  484. obedience to God

  485. and everyday

  486. following of his

  487. words gets us

  488. God's affirmation.

  489. And maybe that's a

  490. word for some of us

  491. here this morning

  492. who are just

  493. struggling thinking,

  494. am I making a

  495. difference?

  496. Am I doing

  497. anything in this

  498. world?

  499. Well, here's the

  500. thing, that Paul

  501. loves their

  502. obedience and God

  503. loves our

  504. obedience.

  505. You know, I must

  506. say I've heard a

  507. couple of instances

  508. even this week of

  509. people in this

  510. church making

  511. costly decisions,

  512. making sacrificial

  513. decisions, making

  514. gospel decisions

  515. because they want to

  516. be obedient to the

  517. word of God.

  518. And can I just say

  519. I find it massively

  520. encouraging?

  521. And I really do, I

  522. find myself rejoicing

  523. with Paul on this

  524. one.

  525. When he sees

  526. obedience in the

  527. church, you know,

  528. I wonder how you're

  529. doing with everyday

  530. obedience this

  531. evening.

  532. You know, are there

  533. some decisions right

  534. now in your life that

  535. you need to make for

  536. the glory of God in

  537. your life?

  538. It's a big challenge

  539. to us, isn't it?

  540. Paul rejoices in the

  541. obedience of these

  542. Christians to the

  543. word of God.

  544. They are making

  545. everyday gospel

  546. decisions for the

  547. glory of God.

  548. And you see, to

  549. spur them on even

  550. more, here's the

  551. second phrase Paul

  552. uses at verse 19.

  553. What does he say?

  554. He wants them to be

  555. wise in what is

  556. good.

  557. And quickly

  558. followed by the

  559. third phrase he

  560. wants them to be,

  561. at verse 19, he

  562. wants them to be

  563. innocent about what

  564. is evil.

  565. So he wants them

  566. to be discerning.

  567. That's what he wants

  568. them to be.

  569. Now what are the

  570. encouragements for

  571. them as they seek to

  572. do that?

  573. We'll look at verse 20.

  574. Who is on their

  575. side?

  576. The God of peace.

  577. What encouragement

  578. for this church living

  579. in a world of chaos

  580. and division.

  581. They would seek to

  582. work its way into the

  583. church and infiltrate

  584. it.

  585. Who is on their

  586. side?

  587. The God of peace.

  588. And not just that,

  589. look where else

  590. what he says, and

  591. the grace of Jesus

  592. Christ.

  593. Grace and peace.

  594. What is he telling

  595. them to do?

  596. What is the big

  597. point here?

  598. The big point is that

  599. God will provide

  600. everything that you

  601. need.

  602. Keep looking to him.

  603. Keep running for him

  604. because his will be

  605. the victory.

  606. There's the miracle,

  607. says Paul.

  608. The gospel message of

  609. Jesus Christ, the

  610. power of God that

  611. has created this new

  612. people.

  613. Fight for that.

  614. Fight for the

  615. miracle of the church.

  616. Fight for it by

  617. fighting for the very

  618. gospel message that

  619. has brought you

  620. together.

  621. So there's the first

  622. flavor of this last

  623. bite of Romans.

  624. Flavor of the church.

  625. The second flavor is

  626. at verses 21 to 24.

  627. And it's mission.

  628. Paul is saying to them

  629. that here is the

  630. mission worth working

  631. for.

  632. And here Paul gives

  633. us even more names.

  634. Loves a name, does

  635. her brother Paul.

  636. Remember Paul, he's

  637. penning this.

  638. Or as we'll see in a

  639. minute that he's

  640. probably dictating this

  641. letter from Corinth.

  642. He's over here and he's

  643. sending it over to the

  644. church in Rome.

  645. So in the first half of

  646. chapter 16 we learn some

  647. names of the people who

  648. are in this church in

  649. Rome.

  650. That is the guys who are

  651. going to open this letter

  652. and read it for

  653. themselves.

  654. Well in this section

  655. here we get some names

  656. of men who are at this

  657. side of the letter.

  658. That is Paul's fellow

  659. laborers in the gospel.

  660. The people who are with

  661. Paul.

  662. The people who are at the

  663. Corinth end of the

  664. letter.

  665. That's what we get.

  666. And you see that he

  667. lists eight such men.

  668. Eight men he lists here.

  669. Quickly look with me.

  670. Who does he mention?

  671. Timothy.

  672. Paul's loved and fellow

  673. worker in gospel ministry.

  674. Timothy sends his

  675. greetings to this church.

  676. Lucius, Jason and

  677. Sospiter.

  678. I also said that a lot

  679. better than me but I've

  680. been working on that.

  681. That's what I think.

  682. These guys most likely

  683. relatives of Paul's who

  684. he's led to the Lord.

  685. They're sending their

  686. greetings as well.

  687. Tertius probably a slave

  688. who was writing down this

  689. letter word for word as

  690. Paul's dictating it.

  691. What an amazing privilege by

  692. the way for Tertius.

  693. He's sending his greetings.

  694. Gaius, probably a

  695. prosperous businessman who

  696. lives in Corinth who's

  697. leading one of the house

  698. churches or certainly

  699. opening his home for one

  700. of the house churches and

  701. being a host to the

  702. apostle Paul.

  703. He sends his greetings.

  704. And Erastus, the city

  705. treasurer who's trusted in

  706. Christ, this man of honor,

  707. this man of position, he

  708. sends his greetings as well.

  709. Paul wants them to know

  710. about these eight men.

  711. Now the real gold here is

  712. not in so much as what

  713. these men do, although that

  714. is important.

  715. The real gold here is

  716. noticing why Paul bothers

  717. to mention them.

  718. Why does he mention them?

  719. Now every time Paul mentions

  720. names in his letters, he's

  721. doing it with a purpose.

  722. Because letter writing in

  723. this culture, very timely,

  724. time consuming I should say,

  725. and really expensive.

  726. So you do not waste your

  727. words.

  728. So Paul is deliberately

  729. mentioning these men here.

  730. Why is he doing that?

  731. Why does Paul want these

  732. guys in Rome to know about

  733. these guys who are laboring

  734. with him in Corinth over

  735. here?

  736. Why does he do it?

  737. Answer for their

  738. encouragement and for their

  739. inspiration.

  740. Here are eight men, says

  741. Paul.

  742. Different men, different

  743. gifts, different resources,

  744. different circumstances.

  745. And what have they done?

  746. They have all bought in to

  747. the mission.

  748. They've all bought in to the

  749. mission.

  750. And what's the mission?

  751. The mission is to take the

  752. gospel, the story of God's

  753. salvation, the story of how

  754. God has made a way for sinful

  755. men and women to be reconciled

  756. to him and live and enjoy him

  757. forever through Jesus Christ.

  758. Take that gospel to the ends of

  759. the earth.

  760. Take it to your whole world.

  761. Take it to your circles.

  762. That's the mission.

  763. That's the mission.

  764. And here are eight men who have

  765. bought into that mission and who

  766. are working hard along with Paul

  767. and using whatever they have,

  768. whatever they have for that

  769. mission.

  770. Just think about a few of them

  771. really quickly.

  772. Tertius sacrificing his time to

  773. help Paul write this letter.

  774. Now, is Paul having difficulty

  775. writing at this point?

  776. Is Tertius helping him translate

  777. this letter into Latin so that it

  778. can be understood by people at the

  779. other side, perhaps?

  780. But whatever it is, do you see how

  781. Tertius is giving up his time,

  782. listening to Paul, writing it all

  783. down and using his skills to write

  784. this letter?

  785. Why is he doing that?

  786. Because he buys into the mission.

  787. Gaius, this wealthy man who we read

  788. about at the beginning of 1 Corinthians,

  789. he's baptized by Paul.

  790. What is he doing with his resources?

  791. Is he living the high life?

  792. Has he got a speedboat and a house

  793. in the south of Spain?

  794. No, he's not.

  795. What is he doing?

  796. He's hosting a church.

  797. And he's using what God has given

  798. him for the furtherance of God's

  799. kingdom.

  800. And why does he do it?

  801. He does it because Gaius has bought

  802. into the mission.

  803. And Erastus, this man of high position,

  804. is he seeking to climb the career

  805. ladder?

  806. No, he's not.

  807. He's seeking to live for the glory of

  808. God and telling others about him in

  809. the place where he works.

  810. And why does Erastus do it?

  811. He does it because he's bought into

  812. the mission.

  813. Here are eight men who have bought

  814. into the mission.

  815. Here are eight men who are working

  816. hard for the mission.

  817. Here are eight men who are spending

  818. themselves for the mission to take the

  819. gospel across the globe.

  820. And why are they doing that?

  821. Because their hearts have been so utterly

  822. gripped by the greatness and sheer

  823. brilliance of the person and their

  824. savior, Jesus Christ.

  825. And you see how that praise of God has

  826. propelled them to go and work hard for

  827. the gospel and proclaim the gospel,

  828. live for Jesus Christ.

  829. You know, it was William Tyndale, the

  830. man probably most famous for translating

  831. the Bible into English at some point in

  832. his life.

  833. And it was really hard to do so.

  834. And he was burnt at the stake because he

  835. did it.

  836. He said this.

  837. He said,

  838. Evangelion is a Greek word signifying good,

  839. merry, glad, and joyful news.

  840. And it makes a man's heart glad.

  841. And it makes him sing.

  842. And it makes him dance.

  843. And it makes him leap for joy.

  844. Question.

  845. Does the gospel make you,

  846. does the gospel make me sing and dance

  847. and leap for joy?

  848. Has Jesus gripped our souls?

  849. Have we bought and do we cherish and do we

  850. love the gospel of Jesus Christ?

  851. And have we bought into the mission that

  852. Paul lays out here to take the gospel to

  853. the world?

  854. Are you using your time for that mission?

  855. Are you using your resources for that

  856. mission?

  857. Are you using your job and position that

  858. God has given you for that mission?

  859. And I was reacquainted with the story of

  860. the English cricketer C.T.

  861. Studd this week.

  862. That's the guy on the screen.

  863. Just to put you out your misery there.

  864. That's who that guy is.

  865. I'd heard the story before about C.T.

  866. Studd, but I maybe just hadn't

  867. appreciated just how good a cricketer he

  868. was.

  869. He wasn't just a good cricketer.

  870. I mean, we're talking about a seriously

  871. talented and highly acclaimed man who

  872. played for England.

  873. I mean, he's got to be good, I think, to

  874. play for England.

  875. But in any event, he becomes a Christian

  876. and he gives up his cricket career and

  877. he goes on to become a highly devoted

  878. missionary and he's taken the gospel to

  879. places like China and India.

  880. Incidentally, you can have this one for

  881. free.

  882. There's a great biography of him by Norman

  883. Grub.

  884. You can get it for really cheap on

  885. Kindle just now.

  886. That's for free.

  887. But there it is.

  888. But we have to ask ourselves, why would

  889. C.T.

  890. Studd give up his cricket career to go

  891. and share the gospel with those in

  892. far-flung lands?

  893. Well, here is what he said as he thought

  894. about his life and as he thought about

  895. what he should do with his life after he

  896. became a Christian.

  897. Now, this is great.

  898. Listen to this.

  899. He's recorded as saying this.

  900. How could I spend the best hours of my

  901. life in working for myself and for the

  902. honors and pleasures of this world when

  903. thousands of souls are perishing without

  904. having heard about Jesus Christ?

  905. The best hours of his life.

  906. And he would later go on to write the poem that's

  907. cherished by so many.

  908. The poem with these words,

  909. Oh, let my love with fervor burn.

  910. And from the world now let me turn.

  911. Living for thee and thee alone.

  912. Bringing thee pleasure on thy throne.

  913. Only one life.

  914. It will soon be passed.

  915. Only what's done for Christ will last.

  916. That is inspiring stuff, isn't it?

  917. I find that massively challenging as I think

  918. about my life.

  919. You think, I think about Moses in Psalm 90.

  920. What does he say?

  921. He says, Lord, teach us to number our years,

  922. number our days.

  923. What are we doing with our days on this

  924. earth?

  925. Have we bought into this mission?

  926. Here's a man.

  927. Here's men in this letter, but here's a

  928. man C.T. Studd who is bought into this

  929. mission and living his life for the glory

  930. of God and expending himself for the

  931. mission of God to take the gospel around

  932. the world.

  933. But it's an example, isn't it, of what

  934. happens when the gospel of grace grips

  935. us and is the person of Jesus Christ as

  936. he thrills us.

  937. And it produces in us, doesn't it, that

  938. deep sense of wonder and awe and worship

  939. and praise and that deep sense of obligation

  940. and debt and it propels us to mission.

  941. Here are eight men, says Paul.

  942. Different men, different gifts, different

  943. resources, but who are using whatever

  944. they've got, whatever God has given them

  945. for this mission.

  946. Now, of course, this guy Paul, isn't he?

  947. He's already outlined in this letter that

  948. praise has propelled him to travel around

  949. Asia Minor proclaiming the gospel.

  950. What is his desire?

  951. We saw at the beginning of chapter 15.

  952. He wants to go to Spain.

  953. I mean, this is not a guy who, like,

  954. lacks godly ambition, is it?

  955. Or that I would have the mindset of Paul,

  956. that I want to go to everywhere in my

  957. circles and spread the gospel.

  958. Paul says here, as he finishes this book

  959. of letter of Romans, here is the mission

  960. worth working for.

  961. And that's the second flavor of the last

  962. bit of Romans.

  963. Here's the third one.

  964. And we'll find it in verses 25 to 27.

  965. And it's of God's glory.

  966. Paul says here is the message worth living for.

  967. So do you see how Paul finishes his letter

  968. by lifting their gaze to the greatness of God,

  969. the God who has made this whole salvation

  970. venture possible.

  971. And he tells them again that salvation,

  972. this plan that God has had since the beginning

  973. of time to bring sinful men and women to himself,

  974. that they can be saved through Jesus Christ,

  975. that they can be made one with God,

  976. this is the God who has made this all possible.

  977. It's not us who have made this possible.

  978. It is God who has made this possible.

  979. And notice in passing how Paul describes God here.

  980. Verse 25.

  981. As the one who is able to establish them.

  982. As if to remind them that the God who saved them

  983. is the God who is able to hold them and keep them.

  984. And the God who is able to see them home.

  985. Is this mission terrifying?

  986. It is absolutely terrifying.

  987. What is the comfort in this mission?

  988. That the power is from God and it is God who's holding us.

  989. This is all of him.

  990. He is the one who commanded this whole salvation thing.

  991. Do you notice that in verse 26?

  992. He is the eternal God.

  993. He is the only wise God.

  994. Salvation from beginning to end is the plan of the eternal God.

  995. His plan since the beginning of time to win a people for himself.

  996. A plan centering on Jesus Christ, heaven's reigning king.

  997. The eternal son of God.

  998. God sent from heaven's courts to rescue sinful men and women from their sin.

  999. He would give his life on the cross to win that people.

1000. A people from all around the world and win them to himself

1001. in order that they might sing his praises.

1002. And with one voice live for and glorify the God who has saved them.

  1003. That's the message.

  1004. That's the message.

1005. What does Paul do with this message?

  1006. Verse 25.

  1007. He proclaims it.

  1008. He proclaims it.

1009. And you can't help this.

1010. Maybe this was just me.

1011. But you can't help but read these verses.

1012. I read them this week and I could hear Paul's voice in the back of my head.

1013. And what was he saying?

1014. He was saying, join me.

  1015. Join me.

1016. Give your life for this mission.

1017. There is nothing that compares with giving your life for this mission.

  1018. Join me.

1019. Join me in making much of Jesus Christ.

1020. Join me in making Jesus Christ known to the lost world.

1021. To a lost world that desperately needs to hear about him.

1022. For you see, the greatest man that ever lived.

1023. He calls us to join him in the greatest mission that the world will ever know.

  1024. Here is Jesus Christ.

  1025. That's what Romans says, isn't it?

1026. As we come to finish.

  1027. It's a call to know and it's a call to go.

  1028. To go and proclaim.

1029. To take this incredible message to the far-flung corners of the earth.

  1030. Yes.

1031. But to take it to our streets.

1032. And to take it to our offices.

1033. And to take it to our sports teams.

1034. And to take it to our families.

1035. And to take it to our friends.

1036. And to take it to anywhere else that you find yourself.

  1037. To make Jesus known.

  1038. To make him great.

  1039. And to bring.

1040. God would use us to bring men and women to faith in him.

1041. So the question as we leave the letter to the Romans is.

  1042. Will we go?

  1043. Will we go?

1044. Will we be God's people who are captivated by praise and who go and proclaim?

  1045. So there it is.

1046. The last bite of Romans 16.

1047. The miracle worth fighting for.

1048. The mission worth working for.

1049. The message worth living for.

1050. And let me close just by reading the chorus of the song that we're about to stand and sing.

1051. Which I think so beautifully ends the book of Romans.

1052. You can almost say it's a theme song for the whole book of Romans.

  1053. And it's this.

1054. All glory be to Christ our King.

1055. All glory be to Christ.

1056. His rule and reign we will ever sing.

1057. All glory be to Christ.

1058. And how does Paul end this letter?

1059. Alistair led us in it earlier.

  1060. Let's end there.

  1061. We'll say it together.

1062. How does Paul end this letter?

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Let me pray.

  1065. Oh our gracious Father.

  1066. We thank you.

1067. Thank you for your word.

1068. Thank you for the letter of Romans.

1069. Thank you that we have it in our own language.

1070. Thank you that it tells us about your greatness.

1071. And the extent that you have gone to to make us yours.

1072. And as we close our time together in it tonight.

1073. I ask gracious Father that its message would continue to be fuel for mission.

1074. Oh would the person of Jesus Christ.

  1075. His work.

  1076. His death.

  1077. His resurrection.

1078. May that continue to thrill our hearts.

1079. And may that praise of him propel us to go and proclaim.

1080. Oh would you help us to live for you and your glory this week we ask by your spirit.

1081. To be those who proclaim your glorious message to this lost and broken world.

1082. Oh our gracious Father we thank you for our time this evening.

1083. And we pray these things in the glorious name of Jesus.

  1084. Amen.
