  1. Well, please have a seat and let's pray together.

  2. Father God, we're so conscious that blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord

  3. and who meditates on this law day and night.

  4. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season

  5. and whose leaf does not wither.

  6. Whatever they do prospers.

  7. Father God, we long so much to be those kind of people.

  8. So Lord, as we take time together to meditate and think about your words,

  9. Father, would you use it to do your work and send your spirit that it might be alive,

  10. that it might be dynamic and that it might bring about transformation in our lives for your glory alone.

  11. Amen.

  12. This morning we're just looking at five verses in Luke's Gospel.

  13. I called it the Diverse Dozen and I love that photo until I realised this morning that there's only 11 people sitting on the ledge.

  14. I thought I might get away with it by saying the 12th was taking the photo.

  15. But we'll just go with it.

  16. The 20th of October 1968 was a day that the world changed.

  17. After the 20th of October, that is 48 years ago last Thursday, nothing would ever be the same again.

  18. It was a day that the world changed.

  19. That is, the world of high jumping.

  20. It was on the 20th of October 1968 in Mexico City at the Olympics that Richard Douglas Fosbury, the American athlete,

  21. jumped over the high jump in a way that no one had ever jumped before.

  22. Up until that moment, everyone had used the technique called the barrel roll,

  23. where you'd run up to the bar forwards, you would then push off with your main foot and you would roll over it like this,

  24. with a bit more grace and a bit more height.

  25. Richard Douglas Fosbury, however, during his time at university, had developed a new technique,

  26. famously called the Fosbury flop, where you would run up in the same manner,

  27. except at a slight angle you would push off from your dominant foot,

  28. and you would arch your back and go off over backwards.

  29. Richard Fosbury changed the game.

  30. He laid a fresh foundation for the way that high jump would be done from that moment on.

  31. No one looked back.

  32. And what goes on in these seemingly five innocuous verses,

  33. in the middle of Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  34. is an absolute game changer.

  35. After this moment, nothing would be the same again.

  36. It would be a fresh foundation, a defining moment.

  37. What happens in these verses is almost a miracle that no one notices.

  38. So I've greatly enjoyed looking at it, and if you would turn to Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  39. and verse 12, I'll read it.

  40. One of those days, Luke writes, Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray,

  41. and spent the night praying to God.

  42. When morning came, he called his twelve disciples to him,

  43. whom he also designated apostles.

  44. Simon, whom he named Peter.

  45. Simon's brother Andrew.

  46. James, John.

  47. Philip, Bartholomew.

  48. Matthew, Thomas.

  49. James, son of Alphaeus.

  50. Simon, who was called the Zealot.

  51. Judas, son of James.

  52. And Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

  53. Wonderful verses.

  54. And the first thing I want us to see is that this is a radical move.

  55. This is a radical move in Jesus' ministry and in world history.

  56. What happens in these five verses?

  57. You have to say Jesus has done some pretty remarkable things so far in Luke's gospel.

  58. He has declared himself to be the spirit-anointed preacher that Isaiah foresaw

  59. 800 years before Jesus turned up.

  60. When in the synagogue at Nazareth, he says,

  61. Jesus has driven out demons and they have submitted to his authority.

  62. Jesus has taught with authority and everyone has been amazed.

  63. We have never heard teaching like this before.

  64. Jesus has healed many people of all sorts of diseases,

  65. even that most stigmatized of disorders, leprosy.

  66. Jesus has blown fishermen's minds by orchestrating a miraculous catch of fish.

  67. It takes quite a lot to blow fishermen's minds with catching fish.

  68. And yet Jesus has done it.

  69. Jesus has read people's thoughts.

  70. He's claimed to have authority to forgive sins.

  71. And just to prove the point, he's told a paralyzed man to get up and walk.

  72. Jesus has clashed with religious leaders over their interpretation of the law

  73. and his claim to be Lord of the Sabbath

  74. and the Son of Man who has authority to forgive sins.

  75. All this has been radical, never before seen and never to be seen again

  76. through the ministry and life of one man.

  77. And yet what goes on here in Luke chapter 6 is more radical than all of that put together.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  78. As Jesus goes up on a mountainside to pray,

  79. he spends the whole night praying to God.

  80. That phrase, the whole night, has already been used in Luke's gospel

  81. for how Peter toiled all night fishing.

  82. It's the same phrase.

  83. Jesus has been toiling all night in prayer.

  84. The incarnate Son communing with the Eternal Father on a mountainside in Galilee.

  85. And he does that because this is a seismic shift,

  86. a change moment,

  87. a watershed episode in redemptive history.

  88. Jesus spends the whole night laboring prayer,

  89. in prayer to find the Father's will as to who should be his 12 designated apostles.

  90. Jesus then descends the mountain having spent the whole night in prayer.

  91. He calls all of his disciples to him,

  92. this big group that have been following him,

  93. as we have in his journey around Galilee.

  94. And then he calls 12.

  95. 12 particular disciples whom he designates apostles.

  96. And you have to say, that doesn't seem that radical

  97. until you superimpose it onto Israel's history

  98. and realize that the only other person who went up a mountain to commune with God

  99. and then descended and called 12 people to himself to teach them God's law was Moses.

  100. That the foundation of Israel's covenant relationship with God

  101. would be based on the teaching of Moses to these 12 men

  102. who were to disseminate it to all of the 12 tribes of Israel.

  103. And here Jesus radically changes course

  104. and calls 12 new men

  105. to redefine the way that the covenant is going to operate.

  106. Jesus calls these 12 men to reimagine, reinvent, and redefine

  107. how God would commune with his people.

  108. He is laying a fresh foundation of the way that things are going to be from now on,

  109. now that the King of Glory has come into the world.

  110. These 12, these 12 men to be his spokesmen,

  111. to declare this life-changing, eternity-securing, sin-forgiving message

  112. to the entire world.

  113. These people who are going to be his ambassadors.

  114. As Jesus lays the fresh foundation,

  115. the radical moment in redemptive history.

  116. And you have to say it was truly necessary

  117. because most of chapter 5 has been taken up with

  118. Jesus clashing with the religious leaders.

  119. The people whose responsibility has been teaching Old Testament law to the people

  120. and defining it in the smallest minutiae possible

  121. that the law has become big

  122. and God has become small in the equation.

  123. We left chapter 11 with the Pharisees

  124. and the teachers of the law being furious

  125. and beginning to discuss with one another

  126. what they might do with Jesus.

  127. A similar account in Matthew talks about how they might destroy Jesus.

  128. That it seems that there is a no-through road now

  129. in the way that things have become

  130. in Old Testament law.

  131. And now that Messiah has come,

  132. the game has changed.

  133. And he chooses a new team

  134. with a new mission.

  135. He chooses them to be the new wineskins

  136. into which to pour this new covenant message

  137. in order that there might be hope

  138. for everyone well beyond

  139. the borders of Israel.

  140. This is the seismic shift

  141. that Paul writes about in the book of Romans.

  142. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight

  143. by works of the law.

  144. That's what the Pharisees thought.

  145. Rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

  146. But now, apart from the law,

  147. the righteousness of God has been made known

  148. to which the law and the prophets testify.

  149. The righteousness is given through faith

  150. in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

  151. That is a game changer.

  152. That the law now is not a way to be saved,

  153. but it's a way to show our necessity of Jesus

  154. in order to be saved.

  155. This is a game changer,

  156. a fresh foundation of the superior covenant

  157. that will make the old covenant obsolete and passé.

  158. And this is great news for us.

  159. This fresh foundation,

  160. because let's be clear,

  161. not many of us in here are ethnically Jewish.

  162. And yet, in choosing these twelve,

  163. Jesus is making known

  164. that the doors are open.

  165. A new and living way is being forged

  166. through Jesus Christ.

  167. This new covenant is not going to be based on obedience to the law,

  168. but on acceptance of the good news of Jesus Christ.

  169. It is not going to be about obeying laws written on stone tablets.

  170. It's going to be about God working on us to sear that law onto our hearts

  171. and help us obey it from the inside out through the indwelling Holy Spirit,

  172. which is secured through faith in Jesus Christ.

  173. One not secured on our performance,

  174. but one that is eternally secure on the performance of another.

  175. Jesus Christ,

  176. who perfectly obeys the law for us,

  177. because we couldn't.

  178. And Jesus chooses these twelve apostles

  179. to make that known to everyone.

  180. Exactly what Paul talks about in Ephesians 2.

  181. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers.

  182. That's talking about Gentiles, which is us.

  183. But fellow citizens with God's people

  184. and also members of his household

  185. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets

  186. with Jesus Christ himself as the chief cornerstone.

  187. This is a radical move.

  188. This is a watershed moment.

  189. This is a seismic shift.

  190. As the twelve tribes of Israel

  191. are superseded

  192. by these twelve new apostles that Jesus chooses

  193. and designates to be his spokesmen,

  194. his official declarers,

  195. these heralds of the way things now are.

  196. that God's people will no longer be defined by race.

  197. They will be defined by grace.

  198. Meaning that the doors are flung open.

  199. And everyone who will look on the sun

  200. and trust him are welcome.

  201. Everyone who will believe their message

  202. can be a part of God's people forever.

  203. That is a radical move.

  204. But then see also,

  205. it is a random mix of people.

  206. Twelve.

  207. Three sets of brothers.

  208. At least four fishermen.

  209. And whenever they're listed,

  210. they're always listed in four groups.

  211. The first four are always

  212. Simon, Peter, Andrew, James and John.

  213. These are seemingly the inner circle

  214. who are privy to more of Jesus

  215. than maybe the rest.

  216. It'll be these four

  217. that go into Jairus' daughter

  218. when she's dead.

  219. It'll be these four

  220. that are up the mountain

  221. on the day that Jesus is transfigured.

  222. These four always appear first.

  223. Simon, Peter, is always number one.

  224. But in the different list,

  225. the other three kind of switch around a bit

  226. for a bit of variety.

  227. The next four are always

  228. Philip, Bartholomew,

  229. who some people call Nathaniel,

  230. Matthew, who's also called Levi,

  231. and Thomas.

  232. They make fleeting appearances

  233. in the Gospels.

  234. They play like little cameo roles.

  235. And then we get another three.

  236. James, the lesser son of Alphaeus.

  237. Simon, the zealot.

  238. Judas, son of James,

  239. sometimes called Thaddeus

  240. so he doesn't get confused

  241. with other Judas.

  242. These three we know

  243. next to nothing about.

  244. And then finally,

  245. Judas Iscariot.

  246. Iscariot either because

  247. he comes from the region of Judah

  248. called Kerioth,

  249. or maybe Judas Iscariot,

  250. meaning he's the dagger man

  251. who is thought to be

  252. part of the same religious sect,

  253. the same nationalist sect

  254. as Simon the zealot.

  255. It's a very diverse group.

  256. It needs to be a very diverse group

  257. if this universal message

  258. is going to get to everyone.

  259. It's going to take all sorts of people

  260. to reach all sorts of people.

  261. It's quite an awkward group as well.

  262. You have got Levi,

  263. or Matthew,

  264. the tax collector.

  265. That means

  266. he is a Roman sympathizer.

  267. He's in cahoots with the Romans

  268. and actually working for them

  269. to exhort money

  270. from his own people.

  271. Matthew, the tax collector,

  272. in Jesus' top team

  273. with Simon the zealot,

  274. who is a nationalist,

  275. who's part of a radical guerrilla movement

  276. who wants to do anything

  277. and everything

  278. to throw the Romans out.

  279. That must have been quite awkward

  280. around the dinner table,

  281. do you not think?

  282. Matthew, the sympathizer

  283. with Simon,

  284. the hardcore nationalist.

  285. Or what about Thomas,

  286. who's famous for being

  287. a little bit sceptical,

  288. a little bit cynical,

  289. a little bit slow on the uptake.

  290. And then Peter,

  291. who's famous for jumping in

  292. with both feet,

  293. one kind of slow and reticent,

  294. the other speaking

  295. before he's even thought.

  296. Or what about James and John,

  297. whose nickname is Boanerges,

  298. which means sons of thunder

  299. because they've got a bit

  300. of a bad temper.

  301. On their school report,

  302. it would say they don't play well

  303. with others.

  304. Or you've got Nathaniel,

  305. who is the deep-thinking Israelite,

  306. the one Jesus says,

  307. there is an Israelite

  308. in whom there's no deceit.

  309. And you've got Philip,

  310. who's seemingly a bit slow,

  311. having spent three years

  312. with Jesus and says,

  313. right, what is it all about?

  314. When are we going to see God?

  315. Such an odd group of people,

  316. a random group.

  317. And yet Jesus doesn't choose them

  318. because of what they are.

  319. He chooses them

  320. because of what they will be made into

  321. all by his grace.

  322. So you have Simon Peter,

  323. whose life is radically transformed.

  324. The only time he doesn't speak

  325. before he's thought

  326. is when Jesus dies.

  327. When he's being tried

  328. and a little girl comes up to him

  329. and says,

  330. you're one of Jesus' followers.

  331. And he says,

  332. no, I'm not.

  333. I swear I'm not.

  334. I'm not.

  335. Oh, why is the cock growing?

  336. And yet we see

  337. somebody who was so reticent

  338. about being associated with Jesus

  339. writes a letter in the New Testament

  340. at the end of his life saying,

  341. this is why you should stick out

  342. like a sore thumb for Jesus Christ.

  343. He's worried about that association

  344. and at the end of his life says,

  345. oh, you can crucify me

  346. because of Jesus,

  347. but can you do it upside down

  348. because I'm not worthy

  349. to die in the same way?

  350. Or what about Thomas

  351. who's seemingly cynical

  352. and slow to believe,

  353. runs all over Persia

  354. and down into India

  355. where he'll eventually die,

  356. convincing people

  357. that Jesus is worth

  358. all of your life

  359. and your eventual death.

  360. Or what about James,

  361. the church leader,

  362. the first bishop of Jerusalem,

  363. who was killed by Herod

  364. and his brother, John,

  365. who were seemingly

  366. bad-tempered people,

  367. John, at the end of his life,

  368. wheeled out into church services

  369. where his only sermon would be,

  370. love one another.

  371. Jesus doesn't choose these people

  372. because of what they are in Luke 6.

  373. He chooses them what they will be

  374. all by his grace

  375. through the power of his Holy Spirit.

  376. Nobody in Luke 6

  377. is thinking,

  378. Jesus, you've done a brilliant job.

  379. I'm sure as all the other disciples

  380. are there going,

  381. well, if he's in,

  382. why aren't I in?

  383. And yet Jesus knows

  384. exactly what he's doing.

  385. But you can say right here

  386. in Luke 6

  387. with this random mix,

  388. you can say this is kind of

  389. a microcosm of the people

  390. that God chooses,

  391. who saves by his grace

  392. and calls them to be family,

  393. to be a team together.

  394. I look around this room

  395. and I think,

  396. what an eclectically weird mix

  397. of people.

  398. And yet what Jesus does here

  399. in Luke 6

  400. is exactly what Jesus

  401. has been doing

  402. ever since he laid

  403. this fresh foundation

  404. of making strangers

  405. into family,

  406. of making old and young,

  407. rich and poor,

  408. wise and foolish

  409. together as one,

  410. laid on this fresh foundation

  411. in these apostles.

  412. Now I don't think we can move on

  413. until we've looked at verse 16,

  414. the whole Judas Iscariot problem.

  415. We read it with chilling effect.

  416. Judas Iscariot

  417. who became a traitor.

  418. This man Judas

  419. who has become infamous,

  420. whose name has become synonymous

  421. with being a turncoat.

  422. And I guess it always prompts

  423. the question in our mind,

  424. who is responsible

  425. for Judas' betrayal?

  426. Why did Jesus choose Judas

  427. knowing he would betray him?

  428. Was Judas set up as a patsy,

  429. a mere pawn

  430. from the very beginning?

  431. Who's responsible

  432. for Judas' betrayal?

  433. Was it divine sovereignty

  434. or human responsibility?

  435. And the answer is yes.

  436. The Bible is full of this tension.

  437. Joseph and his brothers

  438. in Genesis.

  439. Where they do what they want to do

  440. but only actually fulfill

  441. God's plan in the end.

  442. You meant it for evil

  443. but God meant it for good.

  444. Even Jesus' death.

  445. Indeed, Herod Pontius Pilate

  446. says in Acts 4,

  447. met together with the Gentiles

  448. and the people of Israel

  449. in this city

  450. to conspire against

  451. your holy servant Jesus

  452. whom you appointed.

  453. They did what your power

  454. and will

  455. had decided beforehand

  456. should happen.

  457. Gentiles,

  458. they did what they wanted

  459. to do

  460. but because of God's sovereignty

  461. only actually did

  462. what God

  463. had ordained

  464. should happen.

  465. It's kind of like

  466. the rings in the Olympics.

  467. You need both.

  468. You need to hold on to both

  469. at the same time

  470. or else you

  471. flip like this.

  472. You need to hold both things

  473. in tension.

  474. Great quote is this.

  475. The truth does not lie

  476. in one extreme

  477. or the other

  478. nor in the middle.

  479. The truth lies in both extremes

  480. held together.

  481. The truth does not lie

  482. in one extreme

  483. or the other

  484. much less does it lie

  485. in the middle.

  486. The truth lies in both extremes

  487. held together.

  488. Judas betrayed Jesus

  489. as a result

  490. of his opportunistic

  491. selfish hatred

  492. of Jesus Christ.

  493. Judas betrayed

  494. Jesus

  495. as an agent

  496. to fulfill

  497. God's eternal plan.

  498. It's what theologians

  499. call antimony

  500. holding two things

  501. seemingly opposed

  502. in tension.

  503. Spurgeon was asked

  504. how do you reconcile

  505. human responsibility

  506. with divine sovereignty

  507. to which Spurgeon

  508. simply said

  509. I don't reconcile

  510. friends.

  511. before we leave

  512. Judas though

  513. the scary thing is

  514. no one suspects

  515. Judas.

  516. You read all through

  517. the Gospels

  518. so when Jesus

  519. at the Last Supper

  520. says one of you

  521. will betray me

  522. everybody's not pointing

  523. and saying

  524. there's Judas.

  525. Judas has played

  526. a blinder.

  527. He's hidden

  528. in plain sight.

  529. He has all the

  530. right answers.

  531. He goes to all

  532. the discipleship

  533. meetings.

  534. Everyone thinks

  535. he's a good guy.

  536. He plays his role.

  537. He dons the mask.

  538. He blends in

  539. and I think the

  540. scariest thing

  541. is as a church

  542. leader

  543. is we may not

  544. be betrayers

  545. like Judas

  546. but we can happily

  547. play a part.

  548. We can say

  549. all the right things

  550. sing all the right

  551. things

  552. do all the right

  553. things

  554. use the best

  555. language we can

  556. have so much

  557. theological

  558. knowledge

  559. it would blow

  560. your mind

  561. but at the end

  562. of the day

  563. it was all for show

  564. and not for keeps

  565. and so I wonder

  566. if Judas

  567. doesn't just

  568. make us question

  569. how does divine

  570. sovereignty

  571. and human

  572. responsibility

  573. fit together

  574. I think it invites

  575. us to

  576. challenge our

  577. own hearts

  578. am I on

  579. Jesus team

  580. or simply

  581. in the

  582. Brunsfield

  583. club

  584. because the

  585. scary thing

  586. is Judas

  587. had every

  588. opportunity

  589. and hung

  590. out forever

  591. with Jesus

  592. and the

  593. crew

  594. but he was

  595. never really

  596. in it

  597. so easy

  598. day after

  599. day

  600. Sunday

  601. after Sunday

  602. week

  603. after week

  604. month

  605. after month

  606. year

  607. after year

  608. decade

  609. after decade

  610. just come

  611. to church

  612. that's what

  613. I do

  614. and let's

  615. let Judas

  616. challenge us

  617. but whether

  618. this is all

  619. for show

  620. or whether

  621. it's really

  622. for keeps

  623. whether I

  624. have a

  625. fascination

  626. with Jesus

  627. and his

  628. church

  629. or whether

  630. I know

  631. Jesus

  632. and love

  633. his church

  634. because that's

  635. a real

  636. difference

  637. finally

  638. and with

  639. this

  640. I come

  641. into land

  642. it seems

  643. like a

  644. pretty risky

  645. method

  646. we've already

  647. heard in

  648. chapter 6

  649. verse 11

  650. the cross

  651. looming

  652. large on

  653. the horizon

  654. that it's

  655. not going

  656. to end

  657. well for

  658. Jesus

  659. that he

  660. is going

  661. to be

  662. killed

  663. according

  664. to the

  665. father's

  666. will

  667. and his

  668. work is

  669. going to

  670. have to

  671. be left

  672. to others

  673. and he

  674. chooses

  675. these

  676. twelve

  677. he chooses

  678. these people

  679. to be his

  680. ambassadors

  681. his designated

  682. official

  683. spokesman

  684. and as we've

  685. already said

  686. none of these

  687. people are on

  688. anybody's

  689. shortlist

  690. to be in

  691. the boardroom

  692. of any

  693. global

  694. enterprise

  695. if this

  696. is

  697. Jesus

  698. crack

  699. team

  700. of

  701. world

  702. dominating

  703. missionaries

  704. then at

  705. Luke 6

  706. it seems

  707. the project

  708. is a

  709. total

  710. non-starter

  711. and a

  712. damp

  713. squib

  714. before

  715. anyone's

  716. gone

  717. anywhere

  718. when

  719. Jesus

  720. reads

  721. out

  722. his

  723. team

  724. sheet

  725. everybody

  726. is

  727. thinking

  728. really

  729. these

  730. guys

  731. Thaddeus

  732. he doesn't

  733. seem to

  734. have a

  735. clue

  736. Philip

  737. honestly

  738. he seems

  739. a bit

  740. dim

  741. John

  742. MacArthur

  743. writes

  744. the propagation

  745. of the

  746. gospel

  747. and the

  748. founding

  749. of the

  750. church

  751. hinged

  752. entirely

  753. on

  754. twelve

  755. men

  756. whose

  757. most

  758. outstanding

  759. characteristic

  760. was their

  761. ordinariness

  762. no one

  763. is picking

  764. these twelve

  765. guys

  766. no one

  767. has them

  768. on their

  769. team

  770. sheet

  771. except

  772. Jesus

  773. and let's

  774. be honest

  775. no one's

  776. got us

  777. on their

  778. team

  779. sheet

  780. to

  781. transform

  782. Brunsfield

  783. or Edinburgh

  784. with the

  785. message of

  786. Jesus

  787. Christ

  788. none of

  789. us are

  790. getting

  791. chosen

  792. for that

  793. correct

  794. team

  795. by human

  796. standards

  797. and yet

  798. that is

  799. God's

  800. absolute

  801. modus

  802. operandi

  803. this is

  804. how he

  805. always

  806. works

  807. he always

  808. chooses

  809. nobodies

  810. and by

  811. his grace

  812. makes them

  813. somebodies

  814. in order

  815. that they

  816. might go

  817. and tell

  818. everybody

  819. about him

  820. he reminds

  821. this prideful

  822. church in

  823. 1 Corinthians

  824. of that

  825. brothers and

  826. sisters

  827. think of

  828. what you

  829. were when

  830. you were

  831. called

  832. not many

  833. of you

  834. were wise

  835. by human

  836. standards

  837. not many

  838. were influential

  839. not many

  840. were of

  841. noble birth

  842. but God

  843. chose the

  844. foolish things

  845. of the world

  846. to shame

  847. the wise

  848. God chose

  849. the weak

  850. things of

  851. the world

  852. to shame

  853. the strong

  854. God chose

  855. the lowly

  856. things of

  857. this world

  858. and the

  859. despised

  860. things and

  861. the things

  862. that are

  863. not

  864. to nullify

  865. the things

  866. that are

  867. so that

  868. no one

  869. may boast

  870. before him

  871. let's be honest

  872. no one's

  873. choosing any

  874. of us

  875. except God

  876. and yet

  877. the very

  878. reason that

  879. God chooses

  880. us so that

  881. when we're

  882. transformed by

  883. his grace

  884. and make

  885. Jesus known

  886. to others

  887. only he gets

  888. the glory

  889. which is

  890. exactly what

  891. he ordains

  892. to happen

  893. from the

  894. very beginning

  895. so that

  896. no one

  897. may boast

  898. John MacArthur

  899. again

  900. the 2000

  901. year triumph

  902. of the

  903. apostolic

  904. endeavour

  905. is a

  906. testimony

  907. to the

  908. wisdom

  909. and power

  910. of the

  911. divine

  912. strategy

  913. if we were

  914. choosing this

  915. by human

  916. standards

  917. we'd have

  918. all been

  919. left on

  920. the bench

  921. and yet

  922. Jesus calls

  923. us to be

  924. a member

  925. of his

  926. team

  927. to turn

  928. the world

  929. upside down

  930. which is

  931. exactly what

  932. they comment

  933. the disciples

  934. did

  935. in Acts

  936. 17

  937. and we

  938. know it

  939. works

  940. the fact

  941. we're here

  942. today

  943. sharing this

  944. apostolic

  945. gospel

  946. with each

  947. other

  948. is testimony

  949. that it

  950. works

  951. that this

  952. gospel

  953. these 12

  954. people would

  955. even get

  956. the gospel

  957. to Scotland

  958. and we're

  959. here because

  960. of it

  961. and we

  962. know that

  963. it works

  964. in the end

  965. because in

  966. Revelation 21

    Revelation 21:4

  967. verse 4

  968. it says

  969. this

  970. the walls

  971. of the

  972. city

  973. had 12

  974. foundations

  975. and on them

  976. were the names

  977. of the 12

  978. apostles of the

  979. Lamb

  980. that this

  981. eternal

  982. kingdom

  983. that Jesus

  984. came to

  985. inaugurate

  986. and will

  987. one day

  988. be built

  989. it worked

  990. and this

  991. foundation

  992. was set

  993. and their

  994. names

  995. are on the

  996. foundations

  997. no one

  998. except God

  999. would choose

  1000. us

  1001. and yet

  1002. God's

  1003. speciality

  1004. is to

  1005. use weak

  1006. scared

  1007. fragile

  1008. and timid

  1009. people

  1010. to bring

  1011. his son

  1012. glory

  1013. to make

  1014. his son

  1015. known

  1016. to put

  1017. on display

  1018. the transformation

  1019. that his

  1020. grace

  1021. brings about

  1022. and so

  1023. we're not

  1024. able to do

  1025. this task

  1026. but trusting

  1027. in God

  1028. is more

  1029. than possible

  1030. it's more

  1031. than possible

  1032. because God's

  1033. power

  1034. is

  1035. and has

  1036. always been

  1037. made perfect

  1038. in our

  1039. weakness

  1040. let's pray

  1041. Father God

  1042. we're here

  1043. this morning

  1044. and

  1045. the only

  1046. thing that

  1047. we have

  1048. is our

  1049. outstanding

  1050. ordinariness

  1051. and yet

  1052. Lord

  1053. we're so

  1054. conscious

  1055. that you're

  1056. the God

  1057. who places

  1058. the treasure

  1059. of your

  1060. gospel

  1061. in jars

  1062. of clay

  1063. so that

  1064. everyone

  1065. would see

  1066. that this

  1067. all-surpassing

  1068. power

  1069. the all-surpassing

  1070. power

  1071. of the

  1072. apostolic

  1073. gospel

  1074. handed from

  1075. Jesus

  1076. to these

  1077. twelve

  1078. men

  1079. that everyone

  1080. would see

  1081. that that

  1082. power

  1083. comes from

  1084. you

  1085. and not

  1086. from us

  1087. and so

  1088. Lord

  1089. we're conscious

  1090. of our

  1091. fragility

  1092. we're conscious

  1093. of our

  1094. brittleness

  1095. we're conscious

  1096. of our

  1097. unimpressiveness

  1098. and yet

  1099. Lord

  1100. we're asking

  1101. that you

  1102. would send

  1103. us out

  1104. from this

  1105. place

  1106. to make

  1107. much of

  1108. Jesus

  1109. in and

  1110. through

  1111. our

  1112. lives

  1113. so that

  1114. people

  1115. would see

  1116. that this

  1117. all-surpassing

  1118. power is

  1119. from you

  1120. and not

  1121. from us

  1122. that we

  1123. might not

  1124. boast about

  1125. what we've

  1126. done

  1127. or what we

  1128. can do

  1129. but you

  1130. would blow

  1131. our minds

  1132. with all

  1133. that you

  1134. are

  1135. and all

  1136. that you're

  1137. able to

  1138. do

  1139. even through

  1140. us

  1141. so Lord

  1142. thank you

  1143. that you've

  1144. chosen us

  1145. to be on

  1146. your team

  1147. Father God

  1148. thank you

  1149. that you're

  1150. still choosing

  1151. people to

  1152. be on your

  1153. team

  1154. and so Lord

  1155. we'd ask

  1156. that if there

  1157. were any

  1158. today still

  1159. in the stands

  1160. as spectators

  1161. Lord you

  1162. would call

  1163. them to

  1164. yourself

  1165. and Father

  1166. that they

  1167. would enter

  1168. the fray

  1169. as members

  1170. of your

  1171. family

  1172. who have

  1173. the eternal

  1174. hope of

  1175. being with

  1176. you forever

  1177. in the new

  1178. creation

  1179. so bless us

  1180. and help us

  1181. in Jesus

  1182. glorious and

  1183. wise and

  1184. powerful name

  1185. Amen
