  1. Well, very good evening to you. It's lovely to be with you. I've heard a lot about you

  2. guys as a church family. All good. I know it's nervous when you hear that sort of thing.

  3. But it's been great getting to know Graham over the last couple of years at ETS. From

  4. St. Andrews, a big hello. We love our partnership in the gospel. We have with you guys as a

  5. church family, even though we're a little bit distant, separated by the water, we were

  6. praying for you at our last church family prayer meeting. So a range of people say hi

  7. and it's a joy to be with you here. Not least to be thinking about this wonderfully

  8. important, central, foundational topic of preaching. But because it's so important,

  9. because we're coming to God's word, let's pray again and ask for his help. Let's pray.

  10. Our great God and heavenly Father, we come before you this evening, Lord, and are very

  11. conscious of the wonder that you, the one who spoke all things into being, the creator

  12. God of the universe, all that is visible and invisible, that you would speak to us.

  13. That not only have you made us, but that you address us. That you haven't left yourself

  14. hidden behind clouds and darkness, but have spoken supremely in your Son, wonderfully and

  15. ongoingly in your scriptures and in our hearts by your Spirit, that we might understand what

  16. you say. Lord, please, we pray, would he be at work in us this evening? Would your Holy Spirit

  17. grant us light, might see, soft hearts that we might receive the good seed of your word,

  18. ears to hear, and lips and hands, feet and faculties ready and willing to obey, to put into practice

  19. that which you say to us? Lord, be with us, we ask it, not for any sake other than the glory of your Son,

  20. that he would be exalted, and that we would grow more like him, both individually, but also as a church

  21. family here at Brunsfield, and in your service. For we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  22. Well, I wonder who you are this evening. It's quite nice when you're a visiting speaker and

  23. preacher, because I know very few of you well at all. So I'm going to trade on my anonymity and ask

  24. you an impertinent personal question. What do you think of preaching? What do you make of preaching?

  25. Not, what do you think of John's preaching, or what do you think of Graham's preaching? Come and tell

  26. me that afterwards if you'd like to. But what do you make of preaching itself? What place does it hold

  27. in your own life? And also in how you think the life of a church should be ordered? You see, my hunch

  28. is that there's probably a range of different positions among us, just speaking from, I guess,

  29. my own experience at home and around the place. There'll be those who are fully persuaded that

  30. preaching is absolutely central to the healthy life of a healthy church, that it's something

  31. that you need, that it's something that is non-negotiable. And yet, in such a high view,

  32. can come an element of assumption. The possible danger is that we come week in, week out, and we

  33. take for granted what we hear. We take for granted what goes on, Lord willing, as we're hearing God's

  34. word spoken. And so our own relationship to preaching might start becoming a bit distant. So theoretically,

  35. preaching's great. But myself, as I sit under the preached word, well, I start receding a little bit.

  36. That might be you sitting there. It may be that you're someone who loves church. You love the

  37. people. You love the worship. You love the community aspect. You love the preaching. But it's

  38. one amongst many different things. And you don't quite get why people bang on so much about preaching.

  39. Maybe you're new to Edinburgh or to the different places that you find yourself. And everyone's saying

  40. as you look, as you look for a church, find somewhere where the preaching is good, where it's clear,

  41. where it's central. You're not quite sure why that is such a big deal. Maybe, again, you are someone who

  42. is here tonight who is thoroughly unpersuaded about preaching. This might be a minority of us here

  43. tonight. But it may be that you always have wondered, well, what all the fuss is about? Surely, actually,

  44. in our day and age, sitting and listening to something for 25, 30, 40 minutes is passé. That actually the time

  45. has come to set aside a monologue delivered by someone nearer to a university professor than a real

  46. person. And just get on with living life as God has called you to live. Why all the instruction? Well, hopefully,

  47. whoever you are here this evening, there is going to be something for you as we dig into this question,

  48. why preaching? My hope and prayer is that together we would come up with a renewed and deepened love

  49. for the Word of God. Not only the Word of God out there, but the Word of God as declared in the

  50. preaching of Scripture in our local churches and in any context that we find it, such that wherever we

  51. are on the spectrum, we're going to be more attentive listeners to God's Word, more attentive students

  52. under God's Word, and I sincerely hope, more attentive speakers of God's Word one to another.

  53. Because preaching is never something that stays just out there in front and above me, but rather is something

  54. that actually equips me to serve my fellow Christians. Now, hopefully, you've got a handout in front of you that

  55. Graham has printed off. Graham, this will just help you if you are someone who likes taking notes to follow along

  56. with where we're going, and if you wanted just to know the structure, this is where we are. Please turn with me

  57. if you've got a Bible back to Isaiah 55. That'll be really helpful. I want us to begin just by considering

  58. those two passages that were read so beautifully for us, because our understanding of preaching

  59. is absolutely controlled by and informed by how we understand God's Word to be, what we understand God's

  60. Word as, and what we think God's Word is doing. We're not going to chase down every reference on

  61. this handout. Don't worry if you're having a bit of a panic attack. We're not going to go there.

  62. A lot of the references are going to be there for you to chase down in your own time if you would like

  63. to, to be Borean, to test what it is that I'm saying against the standard of God's perfect Word.

  64. But we'll begin in Isaiah 55, and maybe you noticed as it was being read for us, the stress from the very

  65. beginning. Take a look down with me. At hearing. God is speaking to his people Israel. The whole first

  66. half of Isaiah up to the end of chapter 39 has been about the judgment that is coming on their sin,

  67. and you may well know that in Isaiah 40, the book pivots, and the Lord declares comfort to his people.

  68. So these words in Isaiah 55 sit within this book of comfort, but look at what God is saying. He's

  69. inviting people to come to him. Come all you who are thirsty. You have no money. Come buy and eat.

  70. There's this picture in verse 1 and 2 of lavish provision from the Lord. Instead of famine and

  71. covenant curse, there's going to come blessing and rich provision from God. But look where the Lord

  72. goes in verse 2. Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good. It's interesting, isn't it? Listen to me,

  73. the Lord says, and you will feast. He goes on, give ear and come to me. Listen that you may live.

  74. You see, God is saying to his people as he promises comfort that there is something critical about what

  75. he says to them, such that actually his very words become nourishment and life itself to them,

  76. if only they would listen. Now we are just dropping down here in Isaiah 55 into the middle of rich

  77. truth right through the Old Testament about God's word. If we were to try and do a biblical theology of

  78. the word of God, we would be here for weeks. Begins in Genesis 1 verse 1, where from nothing,

    Genesis 1:1

  79. God speaks all things into being. From the very start, God is a speaking God. And all that has life and

  80. breath that moves and has their being in God has that because he has spoken. You sit here tonight.

  81. I speak here tonight. We feel our chest going in and out tonight as we breathe because God is a

  82. speaking God. Life is only found in his word and it becomes explicit here. He goes on that this isn't

  83. just for Israel. This is for the nations, verse 5. Then you have these glorious verses. Verse 6,

  84. seek the Lord, Isaiah says, while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. Salvation is at stake,

  85. the pardon of God in verse 7. And then God explicitly spells out what is going on with his word and why it

  86. is his word is necessary for life. Why his word is necessary for salvation. Look with me at verse 10.

  87. It's this beautiful image of what God's word is. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do

  88. not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish so that it yields seed

  89. for the sower and bread for the eater. So in the same way is my word that goes out from my mouth.

  90. It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I

  91. sent it. Now we might have a slightly abusive relationship with rain and snow in Scotland.

  92. It's one of those things isn't even as I parked the car and got out and it started raining on me

  93. again I thought oh more rain. It's been chucking it down in St Andrews for a week and you just feel

  94. drenched to the bone. But bear in mind in this context, in this climate, both spiritually but

  95. physically and geographically in Israel, rain and snow are wonderful, wonderful things.

  96. Without it there is no life and God says that is what his word is like. It's like life giving rain

  97. and snow that comes down from heaven. You see what it does? It waters the earth. It makes it bud and

  98. flourish so that it bears a crop. Well God says that is what his word is like. He says it will not return

  99. to me empty. It will do what he purposes for it. And what is that purpose? Well verse 12,

  100. it is his people, those who hear, those who come, those who eat, those who drink, going out in joy and

  101. being led forth in peace. Verse 13, instead of the thorn bush will grow the juniper. Instead of briars,

  102. the myrtle will grow the thorns that are the mark of the curse of a world that has been cursed by God

  103. into futility. Well as the life giving word of God goes forth, it is like rain on dry desert ground,

  104. rolling back that which would cling and choke and destroy, such that life might come. The trees of

  105. the field clapping their hands, an everlasting sign that will endure forever. See God's word goes out

  106. that life might spring forth. Here in Isaiah, it's exactly the same there across reference to 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:15

  107. verses 15 and 16. Famous verses aren't they to do with the inspired word of God. You may well know it,

  108. all scripture is inspired by God. But just before that, in verse 15, Paul says to his protege,

  109. Timothy, who we're going to return to in a little while, that God's word is able to make anyone who

  110. hears it wise for salvation in Jesus Christ. The life that God's word brings is faith in the person

  111. and work of Jesus Christ. We're going fast here over lots of ground, so do come and chat with me

  112. afterwards and chew this over together. But the life giving word of God in Isaiah is precisely the

  113. same as the salvation bringing word of God in the New Testament through faith in Jesus Christ.

  114. And notice that it isn't just a word out there that has to be intuited or figured out.

  115. It is a word that is proclaimed by God himself that people might hear and believe and respond.

  116. We're not left to figure it out grubbing around in the thorns and the dust,

  117. but rather from outside ourselves, God breaks into sin and death with the life giving word

  118. that he himself speaks. And as we'll see, that becomes critical because God is always

  119. a preacher. And he then ordains people to follow after him in preaching that same word.

  120. That's the idea that lies behind Luke chapter 8. Flip with me there, if you would,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  121. as we scoot through a few thousand years of history and we come to Jesus teaching about his word.

  122. Jesus, the preacher par excellence. If you read Luke's gospel and Mark's gospel, Matthew's gospel,

  123. Jesus has come to proclaim the good news of the kingdom. It's what he does. He says,

  124. I've come that I may proclaim in the different villages of Judea. He's traveling around teaching

  125. the people and teaching his disciples about the good news. And here in this famous parable of the

  126. sower and of the soils, Jesus says the central importance in coming to faith,

  127. the foundational thing on which fruitful discipleship depends is how we receive the word of God.

  128. How we receive the words of Jesus. You can see that there in the parable. There's this

  129. sower who seems rather careless with his seed. Do you notice that? He goes everywhere he can,

  130. scattering it as best he can. The seed, we're told in verse 11 by Jesus, is the word of God. And so Jesus is

  131. the sower, wherever he goes, he proclaims, he scatters, he reaches into his bag of good seed and just

  132. flings it such that anyone and everyone might hear. And it's the response then to that word,

  133. which is absolutely critical. We don't have time to walk through all the different responses,

  134. but some are chilling, some are thought provoking. There's one, isn't there, that is wonderfully

  135. encouraging. Verse 15. The seed on good soil, the one that bears a hundredfold that which is sown,

  136. stands for those with a noble and good heart. And look at how this is described.

  137. This struck me. I was actually preaching on this a few weeks ago at home. This isn't some

  138. grand heroic vision as we might think it, some great effort of faith. It's very, very mundane.

  139. Look at the noble and good heart. They hear the word. They retain the word. And by persevering

  140. in their hearing and retaining, they produce a good crop. If you would know the secret to a fruitful

  141. Christian life, it is to hear the word of God, to hold onto it, to not let it go, to, in the midst

  142. of the distractions of life, hold it in your heart. Speak it one to another that you might do that.

  143. And persevere in so doing. That's where true fruitfulness comes. Jesus goes on to say in verse

  144. 18, consider carefully how you listen to the word that is spoken. Verse 21, he says that his true

  145. family are those who hear God's word. There we have it again. And put it into practice.

  146. Let me say this evening that there is nothing more important to the Christian life in following

  147. after the person of Jesus and hearing and responding rightly to the word of God.

  148. There's lots of unpacking we could give that. It's a bold statement to make potentially. But

  149. one implication amongst loads is to simply ask yourself, perhaps over coffee afterwards or in the

  150. quietness of your own heart, what is of the greatest foundational importance to you in your own life?

  151. Is it to hear, to retain and persevere with the word of God? Or is it the various things that clamor for

  152. our attention? Now, if it is to hear the word of God, there's an obvious question, isn't there?

  153. If God's word matters this much, if it's this good, if it brings this sort of life, well, how do we hear it today?

  154. How do we hear it today? It's something that people write theological papers about. It's something that people would disagree on.

  155. There are all sorts of different ways to answer it in part truth. And what I want us to do very quickly in our second point here is to trace through,

  156. if you like, the line that runs from the word of God spoken by Jesus to ultimately the Bible we have in our hands

  157. and the words that we hear from the front, from the preacher, before we apply that more in point number three.

  158. So, whistle-stop tour. Anything that sounds odd here, make a note of it. Come and chat to me afterwards.

  159. I hope that won't be too much, but do push me on any of this stuff.

  160. The first place that we go to to hear the words of God that have been spoken by Jesus is in the inspired testimony of the apostles.

  161. If you were to flip up John chapter 14 and John chapter 17, you would see Jesus speaking to his disciples about the coming Holy Spirit,

John 14 chapter mention John 17 chapter mention

  162. the gift of the helper who Jesus is going to pour out once he has ascended to the Father.

  163. And he says to those eleven gathered around him that one of the chief functions the Spirit will play is to remind them of all that Jesus has said

  164. so that as they go into the world to be his witnesses, they're going to be speaking the words of Jesus himself.

  165. And there's a staggering little bit in John chapter 17, verse 20.

    John 17:20

  166. Jesus is praying to the Father before he goes to the cross.

  167. And he's praying for the apostles.

  168. And then it's as though he turns, as it were, and faces us.

  169. Because he says, I pray not only for these, my eleven.

  170. Judas has gone out by this point.

  171. He says, but I also pray for those who believe on account of their testimony.

  172. Every single one of us here tonight who has their faith resting in Jesus

  173. believes ultimately on account of the inspired testimony of those eleven,

  174. and then Paul, the apostle untimely born, as it were, converted on the Damascus road.

  175. The particular word of the Spirit to those twelve,

  176. such that we now might in no lesser way

  177. come into the life-giving contact of the word of God and of Christ

  178. than if we lived in that day.

  179. It's a staggering thought, isn't it?

  180. That the Bible you have in your hands,

  181. or on your phone,

  182. or whatever media is your preferred way,

  183. is the

  184. unedited,

  185. unabridged,

  186. and totally powerful

  187. word of God,

  188. such that even if you had been there

  189. when Jesus spoke,

  190. you would have been no better off then

  191. than you are now.

  192. It's an amazing thought.

  193. And what gets even more amazing

  194. is that it is then

  195. those words

  196. that are entrusted to people who aren't apostles,

  197. to people who might speak

  198. the same pattern of words

  199. to those who hear.

  200. It would be really helpful if you turn with me all

  201. to 2 Timothy chapter 1

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  202. and verse 13.

  203. We're going to try not to hop around too much,

  204. but there's a few where it's so important

  205. that we go there.

  206. 2 Timothy chapter 1

    2 Timothy 1:13

  207. verse 13 and 14.

  208. You'll know probably that

  209. Paul is encouraging Timothy,

  210. one of his closest protégés,

  211. in his own ministry

  212. of teaching the word

  213. and of raising up

  214. others who are going to teach the word

  215. after him.

  216. And look at the chain,

  217. if you like,

  218. of the authority of God's word

  219. that runs from ultimately God himself

  220. through now to Timothy.

  221. What you heard from me,

  222. Paul says,

  223. chapter 1 verse 13,

  224. keep as the pattern

  225. of sound teaching

  226. with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

  227. Guard the good deposit

  228. that was entrusted to you.

  229. That is the good deposit of the truth.

  230. Guard it with the help

  231. of the Holy Spirit

  232. who lives in us.

  233. See, Paul says,

  234. look, the words that I've heard from Jesus,

  235. that the Spirit has taught me,

  236. I now entrust to you.

  237. Guard it yourself.

  238. Make that the pattern

  239. of your own teaching.

  240. Now, Timothy isn't an apostle.

  241. He's one removed.

  242. In that sense,

  243. he's actually quite like us

  244. in many ways.

  245. And Paul says,

  246. there's your pattern.

  247. Chapter 2 verse 2,

  248. just cast your eye down.

  249. And the things you have heard me say,

  250. the gospel that Paul preaches,

  251. in the presence of many witnesses,

  252. entrust to reliable people

  253. who will also be qualified

  254. to teach others.

  255. Now, I don't know how many of you

  256. have ever had experience

  257. of writing academic essays

  258. or even, I suppose,

  259. it doesn't have to be an essay.

  260. It could just be a letter.

  261. You know when you're typing something

  262. and you're not quite sure

  263. how to finish the sentence,

  264. you just go dot, dot, dot,

  265. little ellipsis,

  266. sort of imply something continuing.

  267. There's a sense in which there,

  268. 2 Timothy 2 verse 2,

    2 Timothy 2:2

  269. is the dot, dot, dot

  270. of the transmission of scripture

  271. through preaching.

  272. We've gone from God's word,

  273. spoken in Jesus,

  274. entrusted to the apostles

  275. and reminded by the spirit,

  276. to then someone like a Timothy

  277. who then in turn

  278. is to pass that on to others

  279. who are going to teach it

  280. and so on and so forth.

  281. Right there,

  282. we get the biblical skeleton,

  283. if you like,

  284. of not only why we preach

  285. in the local church,

  286. but of why it is

  287. of foundational importance.

  288. Actually,

  289. when it matches up

  290. with this pattern

  291. of sound teaching,

  292. and that's a crucial caveat,

  293. when the preaching

  294. of God's word

  295. is in line with

  296. the truth of God's word

  297. as received

  298. and delivered

  299. by the apostles,

  300. then it is the very

  301. word of God

  302. to his people

  303. in any and every

  304. day and age.

  305. And the main theater

  306. in which it's going

  307. to be worked out,

  308. little sub-point number three

  309. there is in the local church.

  310. There are all sorts

  311. of references there

  312. which show us

  313. that the local church

  314. was the place there

  315. where God's word

  316. was preached

  317. and around which

  318. the people gathered.

  319. You get it

  320. in the Old Testament

  321. as well actually,

  322. in Exodus

  323. as the law is given,

  324. Deuteronomy

  325. before Moses dies,

  326. Nehemiah

  327. as the people

  328. are back in the city.

  329. God's people

  330. are always constituted

  331. around the declared

  332. word of God.

  333. Always.

  334. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  335. what do the early church do,

  336. those who come to faith?

  337. Well, they devote themselves

  338. along with the sharing

  339. of all their goods

  340. to the teaching

  341. of the apostles.

  342. Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  343. as the Greek widows

  344. are worrying

  345. because they're missing out

  346. on some provision,

  347. what happens?

  348. Well, deacons are appointed.

  349. Why?

  350. So that the apostles

  351. might devote themselves

  352. to the ministry

  353. of the word and prayer.

  354. From the earliest days

  355. of God's people,

  356. preaching the word of God

  357. has been at the very center,

  358. literally and metaphorically,

  359. of the life

  360. of the local church.

  361. And it goes on and on.

  362. 1 Corinthians chapter 3,

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  363. the assumption is

  364. they're gathering regularly

  365. and the word is being preached

  366. and taught.

  367. Likewise in Colossians

  368. and in other places

  369. that we could go.

  370. We're going to turn shortly

  371. to Ephesians,

  372. which is the great place

  373. where we see this.

  374. But an implication of this

  375. for us.

  376. Again,

  377. big statement to throw out there.

  378. Without the preaching

  379. of God's word,

  380. in accordance with the sound

  381. pattern of teaching

  382. that's been given to us,

  383. there is no church.

  384. Church in the sense

  385. that we understand it

  386. in this way,

  387. gathered together.

  388. There is, of course,

  389. the church,

  390. all of those who trust in Christ

  391. at any point in any age.

  392. But the local expression

  393. of God's people

  394. is gathered together

  395. around the red,

  396. sung,

  397. and supremely declared

  398. word of God.

  399. So let me encourage you

  400. to pray for the preaching

  401. of the word here

  402. in Brunsfield.

  403. Not only now,

  404. this evening,

  405. not only in the coming weeks,

  406. but in the coming months

  407. and years.

  408. Not only Brunsfield,

  409. but all the churches

  410. that would seek to be gods

  411. here in Edinburgh

  412. and around our nation.

  413. That at the center

  414. of what they do,

  415. immovable,

  416. amongst all the many

  417. excellent other things

  418. a local church can do,

  419. would be the faithful preaching

  420. of the apostolic gospel

  421. entrusted by the person

  422. of Jesus

  423. and God himself.

  424. That is why preaching,

  425. again,

  426. matters so much.

  427. And it is why

  428. the Lord Jesus

  429. has ordered his church,

  430. as we'll see now

  431. in Ephesians,

  432. such that his word

  433. is right at the center of it.

  434. Final flipping of the pages

  435. in your Bible

  436. as we move towards a close.

  437. Turn with me

  438. to Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  439. if you would.

  440. Ephesians is,

  441. the great letter,

  442. if you like,

  443. about the local church

  444. that Paul writes.

  445. The church matters

  446. in all his letters,

  447. but here he lays out,

  448. if you like,

  449. the cosmic importance

  450. of the church.

  451. Chapter 3,

  452. in verse 10,

  453. Paul says that

  454. the church

  455. is the expression,

  456. the declaration

  457. of the manifold wisdom

  458. of God

  459. to the watching universe.

  460. Have you ever thought of that,

  461. about Brunsfield Evangelical Church?

  462. that as we gather

  463. here and now,

  464. the wisdom of God

  465. in saving people

  466. by grace

  467. through faith

  468. in the death

  469. of his son

  470. is being displayed

  471. to a watching universe.

  472. But actually,

  473. spiritual rulers

  474. and authorities

  475. are looking down

  476. at us this evening

  477. and saying,

  478. God is wise.

  479. how else

  480. would such a diverse bunch,

  481. and you know,

  482. like I said,

  483. I don't know you well,

  484. but I imagine you're diverse.

  485. Even as I look around,

  486. I can see some diversity

  487. have been gathered together

  488. by Christ.

  489. That is what the church is.

  490. And as we get

  491. into chapter 4

  492. and Paul starts

  493. to apply this stuff

  494. very practically

  495. to them,

  496. we see in verses 7

  497. down to 16

  498. the central importance

  499. of the preached word.

  500. We actually sang it there

  501. that Christ has

  502. ascended into heaven,

  503. leading captives

  504. in his wake.

  505. And here,

  506. as Paul quotes

  507. that very psalm there

  508. in chapter 4,

  509. verse 8,

  510. he says that the risen Christ,

  511. as he ascends,

  512. gives gifts

  513. to his people.

  514. And the gifts,

  515. we're told,

  516. are people

  517. who teach

  518. the word of God.

  519. Look down with me there

  520. at verse 11.

  521. So Christ himself,

  522. the risen,

  523. reigning Jesus,

  524. gave the apostles,

  525. the prophets,

  526. the evangelists,

  527. the pastors

  528. and teachers.

  529. Those who teach

  530. the word of God

  531. to Christ's people,

  532. we're told,

  533. are genuinely

  534. the gifts of God

  535. to his people.

  536. Now that might

  537. just sound like

  538. a ridiculously

  539. overweening thing

  540. for a preacher

  541. to say.

  542. And believe me

  543. that if you were to ask

  544. anyone who regularly

  545. preaches the word

  546. among you,

  547. we would be staggered

  548. at this truth

  549. ourselves.

  550. That jars of clay

  551. full of brokenness

  552. and challenges

  553. and sin,

  554. visible and invisible,

  555. might be used by God

  556. to teach his word.

  557. Paul says that's

  558. what the pastor,

  559. teacher,

  560. is doing.

  561. The apostle then,

  562. the prophet,

  563. we can talk about

  564. what a prophet is,

  565. the evangelist.

  566. Teaching the word

  567. of God,

  568. but not

  569. as a full stop

  570. end in itself.

  571. Do you see

  572. how he goes on?

  573. The word teacher

  574. is not a gift

  575. of God

  576. who then is to

  577. puff himself up.

  578. Look at verse 12,

  579. to equip

  580. his people,

  581. Christ's people,

  582. the church,

  583. for works of service.

  584. Some translations

  585. have works of ministry.

  586. ministry,

  587. so that the body

  588. of Christ

  589. may be built up.

  590. See,

  591. here's where preaching

  592. hits the road.

  593. It isn't,

  594. like I say,

  595. just out there,

  596. which we consume

  597. and then go away with.

  598. It is actually

  599. given

  600. so that every

  601. single one of us

  602. as God's people

  603. may be equipped

  604. for ministry,

  605. for works of service.

  606. Do you know that?

  607. Every single one of you

  608. is a minister

  609. of the gospel.

  610. You might want to put

  611. a small M

  612. instead of a big M

  613. depending on where

  614. you've come from

  615. in terms of a church

  616. background or not.

  617. But the whole point

  618. of the declaration,

  619. the announcement

  620. of God's life-giving word,

  621. is that all of his people

  622. together

  623. may engage

  624. in works of service.

  625. Here,

  626. the supreme work of service,

  627. you can see there

  628. in verse 15,

  629. it's not being blown

  630. about by false teaching.

  631. Rather,

  632. verse 15,

  633. it is to speak

  634. the truth in love

  635. one to another

  636. such that as the word

  637. is preached

  638. morning and evening,

  639. week in and week out,

  640. as you study the word

  641. in your small groups,

  642. it isn't just hovering

  643. and kind of pushing

  644. and nudging you

  645. in different ways.

  646. Rather,

  647. it is dwelling

  648. richly among you

  649. as God's people,

  650. as Paul says

  651. in Colossians,

  652. and then being spoken

  653. in turn

  654. one to another.

  655. all of us

  656. gospeling

  657. each other,

  658. speaking that truth

  659. which we have

  660. heard from God,

  661. why?

  662. So that

  663. the body

  664. might reach

  665. maturity.

  666. Do you know,

  667. as a church,

  668. you will never

  669. reach maturity

  670. if you do not

  671. speak the truth

  672. in love

  673. one to another.

  674. You will never

  675. reach maturity

  676. in the Christian life

  677. on your own.

  678. So many people

  679. speak about

  680. so-and-so

  681. as a mature Christian.

  682. Well,

  683. so-and-so

  684. on his or her

  685. own is not

  686. a mature Christian.

  687. Maturity is

  688. something that

  689. God's people

  690. together attain

  691. to as they

  692. speak the word

  693. one to another,

  694. as the word

  695. is declared

  696. to them

  697. by God

  698. through those

  699. whom he has

  700. gifted to

  701. his people.

  702. It's a wonderful,

  703. beautiful picture

  704. of this dynamic

  705. building site

  706. as the whole

  707. body,

  708. we're told,

  709. builds itself

  710. up in love,

  711. verse 16.

  712. All playing our

  713. part.

  714. You could look

  715. at 1 Corinthians 12.

  716. Yes,

  717. the preacher

  718. matters,

  719. but no more

  720. than the person

  721. who cleans

  722. the loose.

  723. No more

  724. than you

  725. as you

  726. over a cup

  727. of coffee

  728. ask someone

  729. how they're

  730. going in

  731. following after

  732. Jesus.

  733. No more

  734. than you

  735. as you

  736. take what

  737. you've heard

  738. and apply it

  739. one to another

  740. in love.

  741. preaching

  742. in action

  743. if you like.

  744. God's word

  745. dwelling among

  746. us richly.

  747. So three

  748. implications

  749. as we close.

  750. Listen,

  751. test,

  752. and speak.

  753. I guess the

  754. first one is

  755. perhaps self-evident

  756. from where we've

  757. been.

  758. We are to

  759. listen to

  760. the word of

  761. God that is

  762. preached to

  763. us.

  764. We come back

  765. to Luke 8.

  766. Jesus says

  767. hear.

  768. He says

  769. hear.

  770. He says

  771. hear.

  772. Consider

  773. carefully

  774. how you

  775. listen.

  776. Luke 6,

  777. Luke 11,

  778. he says that

  779. true blessing

  780. comes as we

  781. hear and

  782. obey and

  783. do the

  784. word of

  785. God that

  786. is spoken

  787. to us.

  788. So another

  789. personal question,

  790. are you a

  791. careful listener

  792. to that which

  793. is preached

  794. to you?

  795. Too many of

  796. us are

  797. armchair

  798. critics,

  799. at least I

  800. speak very

  801. autobiographically

  802. here,

  803. particularly as

  804. someone I

  805. guess who

  806. has the

  807. blessing of

  808. preaching quite

  809. a bit.

  810. I can find

  811. myself sitting

  812. in a sermon

  813. thinking,

  814. oh that's

  815. interesting,

  816. why did he

  817. do that?

  818. And why

  819. did he

  820. structure it

  821. that way?

  822. And oh

  823. gosh,

  824. I wouldn't

  825. have used

  826. that

  827. illustration.

  828. Or oh,

  829. my phone's

  830. buzzed,

  831. let's see

  832. what's

  833. happening

  834. with the

  835. rugby.

  836. We can

  837. have all

  838. sorts of

  839. distractions.

  840. God says

  841. no,

  842. you are to

  843. listen to

  844. that which

  845. is spoken

  846. to you.

  847. There are

  848. lots of

  849. ways that

  850. might work

  851. itself out

  852. among you.

  853. Do you

  854. read the

  855. passage that you

  856. know you're

  857. going to be

  858. hearing on a

  859. Sunday morning

  860. before you

  861. come to

  862. church,

  863. that you

  864. might consider

  865. it beforehand

  866. and meditate

  867. on it?

  868. Do you

  869. speak it one

  870. to another,

  871. ask what

  872. someone made

  873. of the

  874. sermon over

  875. Sunday lunch,

  876. not to

  877. critique but

  878. to apply?

  879. Even if you're

  880. hearing a sermon

  881. that you think,

  882. I'm not too

  883. sure about that,

  884. what is it that

  885. God is saying

  886. to you?

  887. even if it's

  888. one thing

  889. that you

  890. might apply

  891. and retain

  892. and obey.

  893. Listen to

  894. the preaching

  895. that God

  896. gives you.

  897. Secondly,

  898. though,

  899. we are to

  900. test,

  901. this is an

  902. implication,

  903. a secondary

  904. thing,

  905. if you like,

  906. from the

  907. truth that

  908. all of God's

  909. preaching now

  910. must accord,

  911. must line up

  912. with the

  913. sound pattern

  914. that has been

  915. given to the

  916. apostles.

  917. Paul encourages

  918. the Berean

  919. church in

  920. Acts 17,

  921. he says they

  922. were of more

  923. noble character

  924. than the

  925. Thessalonians.

  926. Why?

  927. Because they

  928. eagerly searched

  929. the scriptures

  930. to make sure

  931. that what Paul

  932. said to them

  933. was accurate.

  934. So test,

  935. be Berean.

  936. It doesn't

  937. matter who it

  938. is, whether

  939. it's a stranger

  940. like myself,

  941. or a loved

  942. regular like a

  943. John or a

  944. Graham or

  945. someone from

  946. the church's

  947. past,

  948. whoever is

  949. preaching,

  950. as you listen

  951. carefully,

  952. listen with

  953. your Bible

  954. open.

  955. Such that

  956. you can see

  957. where his

  958. words match

  959. up with

  960. God's

  961. words.

  962. The authority

  963. of the

  964. preacher

  965. extends

  966. precisely as

  967. far as

  968. God's word

  969. and no

  970. further.

  971. It's one of

  972. the key

  973. insights of

  974. the Reformation.

  975. That any

  976. authority within

  977. the local

  978. church is

  979. governed by

  980. and circumscribed

  981. by God's

  982. word and not

  983. man's.

  984. No one sits

  985. above scripture,

  986. no one.

  987. We all sit

  988. under it,

  989. no matter

  990. who it

  991. is, no

  992. matter their

  993. pedigree,

  994. no matter

  995. their impression,

  996. their rhetoric,

  997. whoever they

  998. might be.

  999. Listen carefully

  1000. and test what

  1001. you hear.

  1002. And then,

  1003. if it accords

  1004. with the word

  1005. of God,

  1006. I'll speak it

  1007. to others.

  1008. Do it,

  1009. in Jesus'

  1010. words.

  1011. Obey.

  1012. apply that

  1013. which you

  1014. hear one

  1015. to another

  1016. and to

  1017. yourself.

  1018. No matter

  1019. how costly,

  1020. no matter

  1021. how painful,

  1022. but you

  1023. know,

  1024. it's regularly

  1025. going to be

  1026. joyful.

  1027. There is a

  1028. sweet pain

  1029. to the rebuke

  1030. that scripture

  1031. brings.

  1032. The words

  1033. and wounds

  1034. of a friend

  1035. are a

  1036. blessing,

  1037. we're told

  1038. in Proverbs.

  1039. How much

  1040. more the

  1041. words of

  1042. God himself.

  1043. So,

  1044. as a church

  1045. family,

  1046. as you

  1047. listen to

  1048. God's

  1049. word,

  1050. as you

  1051. test

  1052. God's

  1053. word,

  1054. may it

  1055. dwell

  1056. richly

  1057. among you,

  1058. working

  1059. itself

  1060. like a

  1061. good

  1062. yeast

  1063. into

  1064. every

  1065. corner

  1066. of your

  1067. church

  1068. life.

  1069. My

  1070. prayer for

  1071. you,

  1072. a prayer

  1073. I pray

  1074. every week

  1075. for our

  1076. church

  1077. family in

  1078. St.

  1079. Andrews,

  1080. is that

  1081. we would

  1082. be

  1083. saturated

  1084. in the

  1085. life-giving

  1086. word of

  1087. God.

  1088. That there

  1089. wouldn't be

  1090. conversations

  1091. happening

  1092. each week

  1093. that is

  1094. devoid

  1095. somehow

  1096. of the

  1097. spirit-inspired

  1098. truth

  1099. about who

  1100. Jesus is

  1101. and what

  1102. he's done

  1103. and all

  1104. that he's

  1105. doing

  1106. and all

  1107. that he

  1108. will come

  1109. to do.

  1110. And as

  1111. that happens,

  1112. as we

  1113. listen,

  1114. as we

  1115. test,

  1116. as we

  1117. obey,

  1118. as we

  1119. speak to

  1120. all and

  1121. sundry,

  1122. believer or

  1123. unbeliever,

  1124. well,

  1125. so we're

  1126. told Christ's

  1127. church is

  1128. built.

  1129. But why

  1130. preaching?

  1131. How could

  1132. it not be?

  1133. How could

  1134. it not be

  1135. in the life

  1136. of any

  1137. healthy church

  1138. that would

  1139. seek to

  1140. glorify

  1141. Christ?

  1142. Like I

  1143. say,

  1144. there's so

  1145. much more

  1146. we could

  1147. say.

  1148. I'd love

  1149. to chat

  1150. with you

  1151. afterwards.

  1152. I'm not

  1153. dashing away.

  1154. If you've

  1155. got any

  1156. questions,

  1157. please do

  1158. come and

  1159. chat.

  1160. But my

  1161. prayer for

  1162. you as a

  1163. church family

  1164. is that as

  1165. God's word

  1166. is preached,

  1167. you will be

  1168. built up and

  1169. that you will

  1170. be engaging

  1171. in works of

  1172. service one

  1173. with another

  1174. as you hear

  1175. the words

  1176. of Jesus.

  1177. Shall we

  1178. pray?

  1179. Heavenly

  1180. Father,

  1181. we thank

  1182. you for

  1183. your word.

  1184. Lord,

  1185. thank you

  1186. for your

  1187. son,

  1188. the word

  1189. incarnate.

  1190. Thank you

  1191. for your

  1192. spirit who

  1193. shines light

  1194. upon us

  1195. that we

  1196. might see

  1197. him and

  1198. that we

  1199. might hear

  1200. you.

  1201. Lord,

  1202. please,

  1203. as your

  1204. son,

  1205. the risen

  1206. king,

  1207. Christ

  1208. himself,

  1209. addresses us

  1210. as the

  1211. word is

  1212. preached to

  1213. us,

  1214. would you

  1215. make us

  1216. those who

  1217. hear?

  1218. Lord,

  1219. for my

  1220. brothers and

  1221. sisters here,

  1222. whatever the

  1223. trials and

  1224. sorrows are,

  1225. whatever the

  1226. joys and

  1227. the cares

  1228. that pleasure

  1229. and riches

  1230. can bring,

  1231. would you

  1232. make them

  1233. individually

  1234. and together

  1235. single-minded

  1236. in carefully

  1237. considering what

  1238. they hear?

  1239. Help them to

  1240. listen,

  1241. to obey.

  1242. Help us,

  1243. we pray,

  1244. Father,

  1245. to be those

  1246. who do test

  1247. what we hear,

  1248. that it might

  1249. match up

  1250. with your

  1251. word.

  1252. We pray for

  1253. the preaching

  1254. of the

  1255. word here

  1256. in St.

  1257. Andrews and

  1258. in our

  1259. sister churches,

  1260. that in

  1261. every way

  1262. the sound

  1263. pattern of

  1264. your gospel

  1265. would be

  1266. taught.

  1267. And make

  1268. us do as

  1269. we pray,

  1270. Father.

  1271. Not only

  1272. hearers,

  1273. not only

  1274. those who

  1275. look in a

  1276. mirror,

  1277. but those

  1278. who act

  1279. in accordance

  1280. with what

  1281. we see.

  1282. Help us

  1283. to be those

  1284. who speak.

  1285. Lord,

  1286. would this

  1287. be a church

  1288. family where

  1289. your word

  1290. would dwell

  1291. richly in

  1292. every member,

  1293. where it

  1294. would ring

  1295. out from

  1296. this church

  1297. right across

  1298. Brunsfield and

  1299. Edinburgh,

  1300. that your

  1301. church might

  1302. be built,

  1303. that Christ

  1304. might be

  1305. glorified,

  1306. and that in

  1307. every way we

  1308. would be built

  1309. up into his

  1310. image,

  1311. the one who

  1312. perfectly heard

  1313. and obeyed

  1314. your word.

  1315. Truly,

  1316. would we go

  1317. out in joy?

  1318. Would we

  1319. be led

  1320. forth in

  1321. peace?

  1322. Would the

  1323. mountains and

  1324. the hills

  1325. burst into

  1326. song before

  1327. us?

  1328. And would

  1329. you, by

  1330. your word,

  1331. through your

  1332. spirit, in

  1333. the name of

  1334. your Son,

  1335. bring junipers

  1336. instead of

  1337. thorn bushes,

  1338. myrtles instead

  1339. of briars,

  1340. for your

  1341. everlasting

  1342. glory.

  1343. Amen.
