  1. Good morning, everyone, and delighted to share in Johnny's welcome to you this morning as

  2. we journey with Jesus.

  3. We've been doing that for a number of weeks now, going through Luke's Gospel.

  4. Two purposes in journeying with Jesus.

  5. One is to learn about Jesus, who he is, why he came, what he did, and the other is to

  6. learn from Jesus, both from his example and from his teaching.

  7. So if you've got a Bible, you might like to turn to Luke chapter 11, no, chapter 7, sorry,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  8. and we're going to read verses 11 to 35.

  9. It will also appear on the screen in front of me, Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  10. Verse 11 says,

  11. Soon afterwards Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.

  12. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out, the only son of his mother,

  13. and she was a widow, and a large crowd from the town was with her.

  14. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her, and he said,

  15. Don't cry.

  16. Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still.

  17. He said, Young man, I say to you, get up.

  18. The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

  19. They were all filled with awe and praised God.

  20. A great prophet has appeared among us, they said.

  21. God has come to help his people.

  22. The news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

  23. John's disciples told him about all these things.

  24. Calling two of them, he sent them to the Lord to ask,

  25. Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?

  26. When the men came to Jesus, they said,

  27. John the Baptist sent us to you to ask,

  28. Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?

  29. At that very time, Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits,

  30. and gave sight to many who were blind.

  31. So he replied to the messengers,

  32. Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard.

  33. The blind receive sight, the lame walk.

  34. Those who have leprosy are cured, the dead hear,

  35. The dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

  36. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.

  37. After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John.

  38. What did you go out into the desert to see?

  39. A reed swayed by the wind?

  40. If not, what did you go out to see?

  41. A man dressed in fine clothes?

  42. No, those who wear expensive clothes and endowed in luxury are in palaces.

  43. But what did you go out to see?

  44. A prophet.

  45. Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

  46. This is the one about whom it is written,

  47. I will send my messenger ahead of you,

  48. who will prepare your way before you.

  49. I tell you,

  50. among those born of women,

  51. there is no one greater than John.

  52. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

  53. All the people, even the tax collectors,

  54. when they heard Jesus' words,

  55. acknowledged that God's way was right,

  56. because they had been baptized by John.

  57. But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves,

  58. because they had not been baptized by John.

  59. To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation?

  60. What are they like?

  61. They're like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other.

  62. We played the flute for you, and you did not dance.

  63. We sang a dirge, and you did not cry.

  64. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,

  65. and you say, he has a demon.

  66. The Son of Man came eating and drinking,

  67. and you say, he is a glutton and a drinker,

  68. a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  69. But wisdom is proved right by all her children.

  70. Thank God I'm sure we'll bless his word as we consider it together.

  71. Let's take time just to pray now.

  72. Open our eyes, Lord.

  73. We want to see Jesus.

  74. To reach out and touch him and say that we love him.

  75. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen.

  76. Open our eyes, Lord.

  77. We want to see Jesus.

  78. Amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. As I've been preparing for this morning,

  81. there is one question that has been going through my mind time and time again.

  82. I just couldn't get away from it as I was thinking about this passage.

  83. And that question is,

  84. is my perception of Jesus based on my personality and my perspective?

  85. Or put it a bit more simply in a way I can pronounce,

  86. do I want Jesus to be like me?

  87. Now you look at that and you immediately think that's the wrong way around.

  88. It's not that I want Jesus to be like me,

  89. I want to be like Jesus.

  90. But isn't it much easier to think that we can be like Jesus

  91. if we start by thinking Jesus is a bit like me,

  92. only without all my flaws?

  93. Jesus has the same kind of view on life that I do.

  94. He has the same preferences.

  95. He has the same priorities in his life.

  96. And perhaps even he has the same what people would call my prejudices.

  97. If Jesus was here today, he would share the kind of lifestyle that I have.

  98. He would probably have the same political views that I do.

  99. And it's very easy for us to build a picture of Jesus

  100. that is essentially an image of ourselves,

  101. but made perfect because we know Jesus was sinless.

  102. And I think in this passage,

  103. what Jesus is addressing is the kind of attitude that is like that.

  104. He has people who want Jesus to be like them.

  105. So we've got John the Baptist,

  106. who wants Jesus to come with a message of judgment

  107. and actually to institute that judgment in the land.

  108. We've got the scribes and the Pharisees,

  109. teachers of the law,

  110. who want Jesus to be like them

  111. and to keep well away from anyone who is sinful

  112. or isn't in the same way of thinking as they are.

  113. And so the challenge this morning, I think,

  114. for me, and there'll be lots more as we go through,

  115. but the key challenge for me this morning has been,

  116. how much do I try to make Jesus in my image?

  117. And how much am I willing to come to the Gospels

  118. and to read the account of Jesus

  119. and to understand from them what he is like,

  120. what his priorities were,

  121. how I should be in my life?

  122. Yes, I want to be like Jesus,

  123. but to be like Jesus,

  124. I need to really understand what Jesus is like himself

  125. and not just transfer onto him

  126. everything that I think is important in life.

  127. So let's take that challenge,

  128. take it away with us

  129. and think about what is my perception of Jesus?

  130. Is it based on my personality

  131. and my perspectives in life?

  132. Or is it actually based on what I learn about him

  133. from the Bible?

  134. So in this passage,

  135. we've got really four sections

  136. and it's a bit of a preacher's dream

  137. because without any difficulty,

  138. I've managed both alliteration and rhyming

  139. in my headings for this morning.

  140. So it should be relatively easy to remember.

  141. The first is slightly separate from the following three

  142. and I've called that compassion.

  143. So this is the incident

  144. of the raising of the son of the widow of Nain.

  145. The first time in the Gospels

  146. that we read of this greatest of all miracles

  147. of Jesus bringing back to life

  148. someone who had died.

  149. Now, if we look at the flow of the chapter in Luke,

  150. it's always good to see things in context.

  151. It's fairly easy to see how this follows on

  152. from what we were looking at last week.

  153. Last week was largely about authority.

  154. It was about the authority the centurion had

  155. and how he could see from that

  156. the insight he got into the authority of Jesus

  157. and particularly the authority of Jesus over illness

  158. that he was able to cure the servant from a distance.

  159. This passage in some ways takes that concept further

  160. because it says Jesus not only has authority over illness,

  161. he also has authority over death.

  162. And the thought of authority comes out again in the passage

  163. because it's the first time in Luke's Gospel

  164. that he refers to Jesus as the Lord

  165. rather than saying Jesus.

  166. He talks about him as the Lord representing his authority.

  167. So from that point of view,

  168. it's easy to see where it fits in.

  169. But as we look at this incident,

  170. there's a key phrase which I think explains it much better.

  171. And the phrase in the NIV says that

  172. Jesus' heart went out to her,

  173. that is the son's mother.

  174. In other versions it says Jesus had compassion on her.

  175. This miracle is unusual for another way,

  176. not just because Jesus raised someone from the dead,

  177. it's also unusual because most of the miracles Jesus performed,

  178. certainly the miracles of healing,

  179. he did because someone came to him and asked for it.

  180. So again, a good example in last week's account

  181. of the centurion who sent these people to Jesus

  182. to ask him to heal his servant.

  183. And that happens regularly through the Gospels

  184. and quite often Jesus will say,

  185. your faith has saved you.

  186. In other words, because you took the initiative

  187. and trusted in me,

  188. that is why I performed this great miracle.

  189. There's nothing of that here.

  190. It is entirely Jesus taking the initiative.

  191. No sign that anyone asked Jesus

  192. to raise this man from the dead.

  193. Indeed, probably most people would think

  194. it would be impossible

  195. if he was beyond any help.

  196. But it was Jesus who takes the initiative.

  197. And he takes the initiative

  198. because he had compassion on the widow

  199. because his heart went out to her.

  200. Let's take a minute to try and get the scene in our minds.

  201. So Jesus has been going around,

  202. he's been doing these marvellous miracles

  203. and the healing of his centurion servant

  204. was probably the most dramatic so far in his ministry.

  205. And he's got a great crowd of people

  206. who are following him.

  207. And there's a real buzz about it.

  208. There's a real excitement about the fact

  209. that Jesus is doing things which are different,

  210. that he's standing up to what they see

  211. as the establishment that oppresses them.

  212. We can see it to some extent kind of mirrored

  213. in some of the things that have been happening

  214. in the political world

  215. over the last months and years

  216. in terms of people like Donald Trump

  217. and what's happened with him in the States.

  218. Some of the things that have happened in the UK

  219. in the Labour Party, for instance,

  220. with Jeremy Corbyn.

  221. And people saying,

  222. here's someone who is on the side of the common people

  223. and who's not afraid to stand up to the establishment.

  224. And even though the people didn't see beyond that,

  225. some of them probably didn't

  226. in terms of Jesus at that point,

  227. that was the kind of impression people had.

  228. Here is someone who's different,

  229. who's on our side,

  230. and who's not afraid of the religious leaders

  231. who've been putting us down.

  232. And so around Jesus,

  233. there's a real buzz,

  234. there's a real excitement.

  235. And then they come towards this town of Nain

  236. and coming in the opposite direction,

  237. there's a funeral procession.

  238. And with all the sadness and the grief

  239. in that, a particularly powerful one,

  240. it's a widow who's there.

  241. She's lost her husband.

  242. Now she's lost her only son.

  243. And her situation is absolutely desperate.

  244. And in those days,

  245. the burial,

  246. or still today in the Middle East,

  247. indeed the burial would have been on the same day

  248. that the young man had died.

  249. His body would be on,

  250. it says a coffin in the NIV.

  251. It was more like a plank,

  252. I think, a bire,

  253. some people call it.

  254. It would be exposed.

  255. You would literally be looking death in the face

  256. as you looked at that scene.

  257. And Jesus, looking at that,

  258. his heart goes out to the woman.

  259. He has compassion on her.

  260. And he does three things.

  261. First thing he does is he says to her,

  262. don't cry.

  263. So he goes and he comforts her

  264. and reassures her.

  265. He then touches the coffin or the plank.

  266. Now that would,

  267. in the sight of the Jews,

  268. make him richly unclean.

  269. So this was a departure from convention

  270. that Jesus was doing that.

  271. And then he tells the young man to get up

  272. and he talks with him.

  273. Jesus goes into the situation.

  274. He sees something happening.

  275. He's not filled with embarrassment

  276. that his people are all happy

  277. and these people are mourning.

  278. He sees something there.

  279. He has compassion on the widow

  280. and he acts upon it.

  281. And if we're wanting to be like Jesus,

  282. if we want to understand

  283. what Jesus is like,

  284. then understanding the compassion of Jesus

  285. and having that ourselves

  286. is really, really important.

  287. There are lots of reasons

  288. why as Christians we serve

  289. and maybe serve well.

  290. Some people serve

  291. because they have a real zeal for the Lord

  292. and that's good.

  293. They want to serve the Lord.

  294. They want to win others for him.

  295. They want to do whatever they can

  296. for the one who died for them.

  297. Entirely commendable.

  298. Some people are more motivated by duty.

  299. They recognize Jesus as Lord

  300. and they want to do whatever is needed

  301. to serve him

  302. and to serve others in his name.

  303. And that is good as well.

  304. Both of these are good reasons

  305. for serving Jesus.

  306. But alongside them,

  307. we need to have a real compassion for others.

  308. When we see someone who's got a need

  309. and their circumstances are hard,

  310. perhaps desperate,

  311. our hearts should go out to them

  312. and we should think,

  313. what can I do to help in that situation

  314. to show something of the kind of love

  315. the Lord Jesus has?

  316. Very easy when we come into church on a Sunday

  317. to think everything's great here.

  318. The music's wonderful.

  319. There's good chat and company.

  320. The preaching is generally very good.

  321. And it's a good place to be.

  322. But you don't have to look far in our church

  323. or any other church

  324. to find people who are really suffering.

  325. Someone who is desperately ill

  326. and who needs people to go with her,

  327. to go to her and to pray with her.

  328. Someone who's been housebound for many years

  329. and needs people just to visit him

  330. and to tell him what's going on in the church

  331. and to make him still feel part of things here.

  332. People who are suffering from poor mental health,

  333. who need to believe that people understand

  334. how things are for them

  335. and are able to support and help them.

  336. As we dig beneath the surface in our church,

  337. there are many, many people

  338. who need our compassion

  339. and who need our help

  340. as they seek to struggle

  341. with the things in their lives.

  342. I think the challenge to me

  343. and I have to challenge to you as well

  344. is not enough to be motivated just by zeal

  345. or just by a sense of duty.

  346. Ultimately, Jesus' business with us

  347. is a people business

  348. and it is seeing others in need

  349. and doing what we can to meet that need.

  350. We need to have the compassion that Jesus had.

  351. So that's the first part of the passage.

  352. The next bit I've called confirmation.

  353. So this is the beginning of the bit about John the Baptist.

  354. John the Baptist is in prison.

  355. John has said just a little bit too much.

  356. That was very uncomfortable for Herod and his family

  357. and he's been thrown into prison for it

  358. and he is facing the prospect

  359. that almost certainly he will lose his life

  360. for what he said.

  361. We're seeing things that were perfectly true

  362. and needed to be said

  363. but he's probably in his final stretch of his life.

  364. And John is in prison

  365. and he's looking out

  366. and he's saying,

  367. I hear about Jesus.

  368. I hear about the buzz there is around him.

  369. I hear about the things he's doing.

  370. But I'm no longer sure that he is the promised Messiah.

  371. And maybe that's partly just John's situation.

  372. He's lonely.

  373. He's cut off.

  374. He's imprisoned.

  375. And it becomes very difficult for him.

  376. But I think very much it's because John looks

  377. and he looks at Jesus and he says,

  378. this isn't what I expected.

  379. Jesus isn't acting the way that I thought he would.

  380. John's message initially was very much one of judgment.

  381. That God was going to come

  382. and to judge his people through the Messiah.

  383. That he would take the axe to the tree

  384. is the metaphor that John uses

  385. as he preaches beside the Jordan.

  386. And he looked at Jesus

  387. and he thought,

  388. here is the man who's going to do it.

  389. Who's going to free the country

  390. from the oppression of the Romans.

  391. Who's going to make sure that her and his family

  392. get the judgment that's coming to them.

  393. Who's going to expose the hypocrisy

  394. of the religious leaders

  395. and make sure that they're deposed

  396. from the kind of position they've had.

  397. And to bring to our land,

  398. to our nation,

  399. the freedom,

  400. the justice,

  401. and the true knowledge of God

  402. that it should have.

  403. That is what John expected Jesus to do.

  404. And he looks out and he sees Jesus doing great things,

  405. doing great miracles,

  406. very popular with the people.

  407. And he's thinking,

  408. have I got this wrong?

  409. I thought he was the Messiah.

  410. I thought he was the one

  411. who's going to come and liberate Israel.

  412. But there's no sign that he's doing that.

  413. And so John sends his disciples to Jesus.

  414. And Jesus doesn't immediately reply to them.

  415. But he shows them what he's about.

  416. He shows them the miracles that he does.

  417. The curing of diseases, illnesses,

  418. evil spirits, and so on.

  419. And then he says to them,

  420. look at what you've seen.

  421. Go back and tell John.

  422. Now Luke doesn't explicitly say it,

  423. but as the disciples went back

  424. and told John what Jesus said,

  425. John would immediately be reminded

  426. of what was said,

  427. particularly in the prophet Isaiah,

  428. but certainly in the Old Testament

  429. about the Messiah who was coming.

  430. He would be someone

  431. who would have particular concern

  432. for the ill,

  433. and particularly for the poor,

  434. as it is said at the end,

  435. good news is proclaimed to the poor.

  436. So in other words,

  437. Jesus is saying to John,

  438. don't doubt.

  439. I'm not coming to do exactly

  440. what you expected at this stage.

  441. There will be a day

  442. when Jesus will come as judge.

  443. I'm not doing exactly

  444. what you expected at this stage,

  445. but I am the Messiah.

  446. I am the promised one.

  447. I can give you that confirmation.

  448. Yes, some of us at times have doubts.

  449. Maybe all of us have times have doubts.

  450. Our faith is weak,

  451. and we look at things

  452. and perhaps not as we would hope

  453. or not as we would like,

  454. and we begin to doubt our faith,

  455. perhaps even begin to doubt

  456. the basis for our faith

  457. through the Lord Jesus.

  458. And the way to address that,

  459. I think quite clearly,

  460. is to do what Jesus did,

  461. is to say,

  462. I want to look

  463. and see what Jesus really is like.

  464. Jesus said to John's disciples,

  465. you observe me,

  466. now go back and tell John

  467. what I'm doing.

  468. And it's the same for us.

  469. We need,

  470. if we've got doubts,

  471. if we're not sure about things,

  472. to get back

  473. and to read about Jesus

  474. and to do it with an open mind,

  475. looking for God to guide us

  476. as we do

  477. and to reveal the truths to us.

  478. In the vestibule at the front,

  479. there are lots of copies

  480. of Luke's Gospel.

  481. If you're having any doubt

  482. or if you're struggling

  483. in any way with your faith,

  484. can I suggest you take one of them

  485. and just read through it

  486. and see Jesus in it.

  487. See what Jesus is like,

  488. what he does,

  489. what he says,

  490. how he died for us

  491. and rose again.

  492. And with an open heart,

  493. ask God to reveal to you

  494. the truths of his word.

  495. We confirm our faith

  496. when we look at Jesus

  497. and when we see

  498. what he is all about.

  499. Confirmation to John.

  500. John's disciples then go away

  501. and Jesus gives a commendation

  502. for John.

  503. Interesting,

  504. he got the disciples to go away.

  505. I'm not quite sure

  506. where that was,

  507. but he certainly wanted

  508. the people who were around him

  509. to understand John

  510. and particularly, I think,

  511. to understand

  512. that this wasn't what John

  513. was, someone really backsliding

  514. and they shouldn't really

  515. have bothered with him at all.

  516. And so Jesus

  517. then commends John to them.

  518. And he said,

  519. well, why did you go out

  520. into the desert?

  521. Why did you go to the place

  522. where John was?

  523. Was it to see a reed swing

  524. in the wind?

  525. Not interpreting exactly

  526. what Jesus means by this.

  527. Is it,

  528. you wouldn't go to the desert

  529. just to see the reed swing

  530. in the wind, would you?

  531. You can see them anywhere.

  532. You weren't going

  533. on a sightseeing tour.

  534. Or perhaps it was

  535. giving them the reassurance

  536. that John wasn't someone

  537. who was easily swayed,

  538. that he was firm in his views,

  539. that he was strong

  540. in what he said.

  541. So they shouldn't worry

  542. about the fact

  543. he'd asked these questions.

  544. Then he says,

  545. were you going to look

  546. for someone dressed

  547. in fine clothes?

  548. No, they were going to someone

  549. who was dressed in camel's hair

  550. and probably looks

  551. rather strange.

  552. They went to find someone

  553. who they believed

  554. and rightly believed

  555. was a prophet.

  556. Someone who came

  557. to bring them God's word,

  558. to help them

  559. to understand it

  560. and to challenge them

  561. from it.

  562. And John,

  563. Jesus said,

  564. that's exactly what

  565. you got with John.

  566. Indeed,

  567. you got a very special prophet.

  568. You got a prophet

  569. who had been prophesied

  570. about himself

  571. in the Old Testament.

  572. The one who fulfilled

  573. the Old Testament prophecy

  574. of a messenger

  575. who had come

  576. before Jesus.

  577. I think it's in that sense

  578. that Jesus says

  579. that John is the greatest

  580. that has been born

  581. of women.

  582. There were many great prophets

  583. in the Old Testament.

  584. We could think of people

  585. like Elijah,

  586. the Elisha.

  587. We could think of the prophets

  588. who wrote many of the books

  589. towards the end

  590. of the Old Testament.

  591. Great men.

  592. But what was different

  593. with John

  594. was John was the immediate

  595. forerunner

  596. of the Lord Jesus.

  597. He himself had been prophesied about.

  598. He was the one

  599. who introduced Jesus

  600. to the world

  601. as Jesus came,

  602. particularly when he came

  603. to be baptized

  604. and also in the instance

  605. we read about

  606. in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  607. So Jesus said,

  608. John,

  609. there's no one born of women

  610. who is greater than John.

  611. And then he says

  612. something very surprising.

  613. He said,

  614. yet the one who is least

  615. in the kingdom of God

  616. is greater than he.

  617. So that if we believe

  618. in the Lord Jesus,

  619. that is you and me,

  620. Jesus is saying

  621. in some sense

  622. that we are greater

  623. than John.

  624. Now it's not that

  625. we are more zealous

  626. for God

  627. than John.

  628. It's not that our message

  629. and the way it produces

  630. is more powerful

  631. than John's.

  632. I think the privilege

  633. we have

  634. is we have the full

  635. understanding

  636. of the Lord Jesus

  637. as we do

  638. if we read about him

  639. in the scripture.

  640. And we have

  641. the relationship

  642. with God

  643. as our father

  644. if we're trusting

  645. in Jesus

  646. in a way that

  647. saints in the Old Testament

  648. even the finest

  649. of them

  650. didn't have.

  651. So it's a question

  652. of privilege

  653. that makes us

  654. greater than John,

  655. not our personality

  656. or our character.

  657. Jesus says,

  658. I commend to you,

  659. John,

  660. he's a great man.

  661. And some people say,

  662. yes,

  663. we identify with that,

  664. we went out,

  665. we were baptized

  666. by John,

  667. we confessed our sins,

  668. we can see the greatness

  669. of John.

  670. And some people

  671. hadn't got involved

  672. in all that stuff.

  673. They said,

  674. no,

  675. we don't believe in John,

  676. we're rightly in prison,

  677. he's a man who should

  678. be locked away

  679. and they would have

  680. nothing to do with him.

  681. And so Jesus then

  682. turns his attention

  683. particularly

  684. to those in this

  685. latter category.

  686. And we get this

  687. little parable.

  688. I was quite struck

  689. by one book I was reading

  690. which called it

  691. The Parable of the Brats.

  692. I quite like that,

  693. The Parable of the Brats.

  694. So you've got these children

  695. that are sitting around

  696. and they're kind of

  697. thinking about playing.

  698. And some of the children

  699. say,

  700. we want to play funerals,

  701. let's play sad tunes

  702. and we'll pretend

  703. we're in a funeral procession,

  704. some of us will be

  705. professional mourners.

  706. Other people say,

  707. no,

  708. we really want to play weddings

  709. and let's play nice

  710. cheerful tunes

  711. and the flute

  712. and we'll dance along

  713. with one another.

  714. And neither group

  715. is willing to compromise

  716. or to go along

  717. with whatever the game is.

  718. If things are not

  719. being done in their way

  720. and how they think

  721. it should be,

  722. then they're not going

  723. to get involved in it.

  724. And Jesus says,

  725. that's exactly

  726. what the religious leaders

  727. of his day were like.

  728. Unless people

  729. were exactly like them

  730. and followed exactly

  731. the way that they felt

  732. things should be done,

  733. they weren't going

  734. to get involved,

  735. they were going

  736. to condemn them

  737. and they were going

  738. to do whatever they could

  739. to get rid of them.

  740. So John the Baptist

  741. came with this great

  742. message of judgment.

  743. He lived a very ascetic

  744. life out in the wilderness.

  745. He ate locusts and honey.

  746. He had this camel hair cloak.

  747. He was very different.

  748. He didn't get involved

  749. in the normal

  750. social things of life.

  751. And they said,

  752. well, he's mad.

  753. He must have a demon

  754. or something.

  755. Jesus comes and takes

  756. exactly the opposite

  757. position in some ways

  758. to John.

  759. He gets involved

  760. in the social life.

  761. He even goes

  762. and associates

  763. with those

  764. who would be regarded

  765. as sinners.

  766. As those whom

  767. the religious people,

  768. the people who thought

  769. they mattered

  770. would really look down on

  771. and say,

  772. we can have nothing

  773. to do with them

  774. because they're not

  775. following the law of God

  776. as we see it.

  777. And they could have

  778. John on the one hand

  779. because he was too

  780. austere

  781. and too stern.

  782. And Jesus on the other hand

  783. because he was too

  784. relaxed,

  785. because he came with

  786. too much

  787. willingness

  788. to associate

  789. with other

  790. people.

  791. And they would

  792. never be happy

  793. unless

  794. Jesus

  795. and John

  796. were exactly

  797. as they were.

  798. Again, it's this thing

  799. I started with.

  800. Do I want

  801. Jesus to be

  802. like

  803. me?

  804. And perhaps

  805. we need to

  806. sometimes examine

  807. ourselves and say,

  808. well, do we have

  809. something of the attitude

  810. of these religious

  811. leaders and Pharisees

  812. in the way we look

  813. at things,

  814. in the way we look

  815. at the work

  816. that is done

  817. for the Lord Jesus?

  818. It's not quite the way

  819. we want it to be done

  820. and we don't think

  821. it's appropriate

  822. or are we willing

  823. to see God at work

  824. and to rejoice in it

  825. even though it may

  826. come in very different

  827. ways from different

  828. people at

  829. different times.

  830. Sometimes God

  831. would condemn us

  832. for our attitudes

  833. towards his work

  834. and by inference

  835. towards the Lord Jesus.

  836. Let's just finish

  837. with three phrases

  838. from the passage.

  839. Hopefully we'll bring

  840. home some of what

  841. we've been talking

  842. about.

  843. So the first one

  844. is in verse 17

  845. and the crowd

  846. say as they witness

  847. Jesus' miracle

  848. God has come

  849. to help

  850. his people.

  851. Literally it says

  852. God has visited

  853. his people.

  854. And this is about

  855. recognizing Jesus

  856. as the one

  857. who came from God,

  858. who came with

  859. God's word,

  860. who came with

  861. God's power,

  862. who came with

  863. God's compassion.

  864. salvation.

  865. And particularly

  866. in our day

  867. as the one

  868. who came with

  869. the compassion

  870. of God

  871. for our sins

  872. and our

  873. helplessness.

  874. The raising of

  875. the widow of

  876. Nain's son

  877. is very much

  878. in many ways

  879. a kind of

  880. acted out version

  881. of what

  882. salvation through

  883. Jesus is all

  884. about.

  885. Someone who is

  886. dead,

  887. completely oblivious

  888. to things,

  889. no hope because

  890. it was gone for

  891. them.

  892. And Jesus

  893. comes into that

  894. situation and

  895. he brings hope

  896. and he brings

  897. life.

  898. And through his

  899. death on the

  900. cross,

  901. God has come to

  902. help his people

  903. through Jesus

  904. as he took on

  905. himself the

  906. punishment that

  907. was due to us.

  908. So if we simply

  909. trust in him,

  910. we can have

  911. eternal life,

  912. we can have

  913. hope,

  914. we can have a

  915. real future.

  916. God has come

  917. to help his

  918. people.

  919. Have we all

  920. taken advantage

  921. of that help

  922. that's offered,

  923. that salvation

  924. through the Lord

  925. Jesus, the new

  926. life that Christ

  927. can give us.

  928. Second key

  929. phrase is at

  930. the end of

  931. the encounter

  932. with John's

  933. disciples.

  934. Verse 23,

  935. Jesus says,

  936. blessed is anyone

  937. who does not

  938. stumble on

  939. account of me.

  940. Some versions

  941. say blessed is

  942. anyone who is

  943. not offended

  944. by me.

  945. I saw a

  946. bit of a

  947. paraphrase,

  948. blessed is the

  949. one who doesn't

  950. feel let down

  951. by me.

  952. And maybe

  953. there's a sense

  954. that John felt

  955. let down.

  956. And this was

  957. very much

  958. addressed to

  959. John and

  960. his disciples.

  961. Relevant to

  962. us as well.

  963. Because what

  964. this says is

  965. it is possible

  966. to be offended

  967. by Jesus.

  968. It is possible

  969. to stumble

  970. as we look

  971. at him.

  972. We could be

  973. like these

  974. Pharisees and

  975. these religious

  976. leaders and

  977. come to Jesus

  978. with our

  979. perception of

  980. what he should

  981. be like.

  982. And if he's

  983. not like that,

  984. then we reject

  985. him and say,

  986. no, I don't

  987. want anything

  988. to do with

  989. that.

  990. A lot of

  991. people around

  992. about in

  993. our world

  994. would say

  995. I don't

  996. want anything

  997. to do with

  998. Christianity

  999. because.

  1000. And it's

  1001. very often

  1002. to do with

  1003. what they

  1004. would see

  1005. as prejudice

  1006. or can

  1007. be to do

  1008. with why

  1009. doesn't God

  1010. do more

  1011. about his

  1012. pain in

  1013. the world

  1014. and so on.

  1015. And Jesus

  1016. doesn't

  1017. necessarily do

  1018. everything as

  1019. we expect.

  1020. And that

  1021. can be a

  1022. stumbling block.

  1023. But Jesus

  1024. says we need

  1025. to look beyond

  1026. the superficial

  1027. and look

  1028. beyond our

  1029. prejudices,

  1030. our perspectives

  1031. in life

  1032. and to get

  1033. God's view

  1034. of the world

  1035. and to see

  1036. Jesus through

  1037. that lens

  1038. and not stumble,

  1039. not be offended

  1040. because of him.

  1041. Jesus,

  1042. particularly at the

  1043. end of the

  1044. passage,

  1045. in some ways

  1046. he always went

  1047. out of his way

  1048. to offend

  1049. the Pharisees,

  1050. certainly to bring

  1051. them to a head

  1052. and to help

  1053. them to understand

  1054. just how different

  1055. they are from

  1056. him.

  1057. And sometimes

  1058. Jesus will

  1059. challenge us in

  1060. that kind of

  1061. way and we

  1062. need to be

  1063. honest with

  1064. ourselves and

  1065. say,

  1066. well,

  1067. is that a

  1068. challenge I

  1069. need to

  1070. address and

  1071. to do

  1072. something about

  1073. or am I

  1074. just going to

  1075. be put off

  1076. Jesus by

  1077. it?

  1078. And then

  1079. right at the

  1080. end,

  1081. Jesus says

  1082. wisdom is

  1083. proved right

  1084. by all her

  1085. children.

  1086. The equivalent

  1087. of the

  1088. passage in

  1089. Matthew says

  1090. wisdom is

  1091. proved right

  1092. by her

  1093. deeds and I

  1094. think that

  1095. gets the

  1096. same sense

  1097. across.

  1098. Jesus is

  1099. saying the

  1100. wise person

  1101. is the one

  1102. who trusts me

  1103. and who

  1104. follows me.

  1105. who doesn't

  1106. get put off

  1107. by all the

  1108. things that

  1109. go on

  1110. round about

  1111. him,

  1112. but particularly

  1113. by their

  1114. own views

  1115. and their

  1116. own attitudes.

  1117. Who recognizes

  1118. that true

  1119. wisdom is

  1120. found in

  1121. the Son of

  1122. God who

  1123. came into

  1124. this world

  1125. to be the

  1126. saviour of

  1127. the world.

  1128. And how

  1129. is that

  1130. proved to be

  1131. right?

  1132. How is it

  1133. proved to be

  1134. true wisdom?

  1135. It is

  1136. proved to be

  1137. true wisdom

  1138. by the

  1139. effect it

  1140. has on

  1141. those who

  1142. follow Jesus.

  1143. By the

  1144. effect that

  1145. comes from

  1146. knowing him,

  1147. from loving

  1148. him,

  1149. by sharing

  1150. his priorities,

  1151. by having the

  1152. kind of

  1153. compassion that

  1154. he talked

  1155. about and

  1156. showed earlier

  1157. on.

  1158. Wisdom is

  1159. proved right

  1160. by all her

  1161. children.

  1162. I guess the

  1163. challenge from

  1164. that for those

  1165. of us who are

  1166. following Jesus

  1167. and who want

  1168. to serve him

  1169. is can people

  1170. look at us

  1171. and say yes I

  1172. can see that

  1173. there is something

  1174. different about

  1175. them, it is

  1176. something that is

  1177. good because

  1178. they have a

  1179. real care and

  1180. compassion for

  1181. others and

  1182. they love the

  1183. Lord Jesus and

  1184. want to serve

  1185. him and then

  1186. they are attracted

  1187. to the Lord

  1188. because they see

  1189. that there is

  1190. truth in what

  1191. is said because

  1192. it makes that

  1193. real difference

  1194. in our lives.

  1195. The three things

  1196. take away.

  1197. God has come

  1198. to help his

  1199. people.

  1200. Blessed is

  1201. anyone who

  1202. does not

  1203. stumble on

  1204. account of

  1205. me.

  1206. Wisdom

  1207. has proved

  1208. right by

  1209. all her

  1210. children.

  1211. Let's examine

  1212. our hearts

  1213. today.

  1214. Let's think

  1215. about how

  1216. much are

  1217. my attitudes

  1218. towards Jesus

  1219. based on my

  1220. feelings and

  1221. my comfort,

  1222. what feels

  1223. right to me.

  1224. How much is

  1225. it based on

  1226. what I learned

  1227. from Jesus

  1228. in the Bible

  1229. and from

  1230. sincerely wanting

  1231. to know and

  1232. to follow him.

  1233. And if we

  1234. need to, let's

  1235. make the

  1236. appropriate changes

  1237. by trusting in

  1238. him or by

  1239. rededicating

  1240. ourselves to

  1241. him or by

  1242. showing more

  1243. of his love

  1244. to those

  1245. round about

  1246. us.

  1247. Let's pray

  1248. together.

  1249. Father, we

  1250. thank you for

  1251. your word.

  1252. We thank you

  1253. for the power

  1254. with which it

  1255. comes to us

  1256. from the

  1257. Lord Jesus

  1258. that he is

  1259. not afraid

  1260. to be

  1261. controversial,

  1262. to condemn

  1263. those who

  1264. are not

  1265. following your

  1266. way.

  1267. But we

  1268. thank you

  1269. too for

  1270. the real

  1271. compassion

  1272. that we

  1273. see for

  1274. the raising

  1275. of the dead,

  1276. for the

  1277. healing of

  1278. the sick,

  1279. for the

  1280. hope that

  1281. is given

  1282. to the

  1283. poor.

  1284. Help us

  1285. all to

  1286. understand

  1287. who Jesus

  1288. is,

  1289. why he came

  1290. to this

  1291. world,

  1292. and how

  1293. we can

  1294. have

  1295. complete

  1296. forgiveness

  1297. and hope

  1298. through

  1299. him.

  1300. And as

  1301. we do

  1302. that,

  1303. help us

  1304. to build

  1305. up our

  1306. knowledge

  1307. of him

  1308. based on

  1309. your word,

  1310. and help

  1311. us to

  1312. become more

  1313. like the

  1314. real Jesus

  1315. that we

  1316. may show

  1317. to others

  1318. the love,

  1319. the compassion,

  1320. the care

  1321. that he

  1322. had.

  1323. We thank

  1324. you for

  1325. our time

  1326. together.

  1327. We pray

  1328. you'll be

  1329. with us

  1330. now as

  1331. we join

  1332. together in

  1333. remembering

  1334. more about

  1335. Jesus and

  1336. particularly

  1337. what he's

  1338. done for

  1339. us on

  1340. the cross.

  1341. Be with us

  1342. in our time

  1343. of communion,

  1344. we give

  1345. you thanks

  1346. and commit

  1347. ourselves to

  1348. you.

  1349. In Jesus'

  1350. name,

  1351. Amen.
