  1. Good morning, take a seat. It is great to see how well filled the church is this morning

  2. and I just want to reiterate the welcome that Paul has already given to each one of you.

  3. I'm Tim, I'm one of the interns here and it's my pleasure to bring the word to you this

  4. morning. We're in Luke chapter 8. If you have a pew Bible somewhere within reach, go and

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  5. look for it and grab it and we'll read it in just a couple of seconds. But to begin

  6. with, I wonder if we could just start by thinking, because it's very easy for us, humans

  7. with our limited attention spans, it's very easy for us to be in attendance but to not

  8. pay attention. It's probably most easiest seen in children, isn't it? Where they will be

  9. unashamedly distracted while their teachers or their parents try to tell them something

  10. of worth. But at the same time, I very much doubt that any one of us have been here this

  11. morning and that we have paid full honesty, full attention. Maybe our minds have drifted

  12. to whether we locked the door or put on the right temperature of oven. Or maybe we have

  13. some situation mulling in our mind. But whatever it is, I'm sure this morning each one of us

  14. have not listened to some degree or another. I'm not saying that in any way to shame or to show up

  15. and maybe in reality I'm only betraying my own lack of attention on some Sundays. But as we come

  16. to hear the word of God this morning, we're going to hear a resounding call to listen, to pay attention

  17. to the words of Christ. And at this point, just before we come and read his word, let's pray together

  18. and let's ask that he would help us to hear that none of us would leave this morning saying there was

  19. nothing for me there. So let's pray together just before we read from Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  20. Father, you are so gracious to us in so many ways that you have given us your word at all. It is such an

  21. incredible blessing and that we have it in our language, that we are able to read your word to us,

  22. that you ever reached out to speak to us. And Father, this morning I pray that you would enliven

  23. our hearts to listen, that you would help us to hear all the treasures that you have to speak to us,

  24. and that this morning we would be completely sure of what you have said, and that we will take action

  25. and go and do all that you have told us to do, even this morning. Father, we need your help, we need your spirit

  26. within us, and so we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Luke chapter 8, I'm starting in verse 1.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  27. After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom

  28. of God. The twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases.

  29. Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had come out, Joanna, the wife of Chusa, the manager of

  30. Herod's household, Susanna, and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own

  31. means. While a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from town after town,

  32. he told this parable. A farmer went out to sow seed, and as he was scattering the seed, some fell along the

  33. path. It was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on rock, and when it came up,

  34. the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns which grew up with it,

  35. and choked the plants. Still others fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop a hundred times

  36. more than was sown. When he said this, he called out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear. His disciples

  37. asked him what this parable meant. He said, The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has

  38. been given to you. But to others I speak in parables, so that though seeing they may not see,

  39. and though hearing they may not understand. The meaning of the parable, this is the meaning of

  40. the parable. The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil

  41. comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the

  42. rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe

  43. for a while, but in the time of testing, they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those

  44. who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do

  45. not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word,

  46. retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a

  47. jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand so that those who come in can see the light.

  48. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or

  49. brought out into the open. Therefore, consider carefully how you listen.

  50. Whoever has will be given more. Whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.

  51. Now, Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.

  52. Someone told him, your mother and brothers are standing outside wanting to see you.

  53. He replied, my mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice.

  54. That's where we'll stop our reading this morning.

  55. And I think as we come to this passage, and it's quite a passage, isn't it?

  56. I think the theme that runs through the whole section are these words, are you listening to me?

  57. Fellow husbands, I'm new to this. I'm only four months into this.

  58. Fellow husbands, do these words cause fear and trembling when you hear them?

  59. Are you listening to me?

  60. Perhaps you've been scrolling through something on the web, and the non-committal aha has just come at the wrong time.

  61. I think recently there was an occasion where the last question was,

  62. you're not even listening to me, are you?

  63. To which I dumbly said, aha, and the game was up.

  64. Perhaps our attempts to surprise the other half only succeed to demonstrate the lack of attention we paid

  65. when some crucial detail was being explained.

  66. Or perhaps we remember back to childhood when we were asked if we were listening,

  67. and to be honest, our minds had long since slipped into something else.

  68. But the new task was given in an urgent manner.

  69. And in none of these cases is the right response to then verbatim say back the conversation.

  70. Are you listening to me?

  71. Yes, the last three things you said were, could you put the laundry out?

  72. Could you wash the dishes?

  73. That's not what they want to hear.

  74. That's not what they want to experience.

  75. The correct response is to get up from your distraction and to do what is asked of you.

  76. The aim of listening to one's spouse or one's parents is almost never meant to be a mere exercise in information.

  77. Far more often, listening is part of a loving relationship.

  78. And that relationship is then displayed through loving actions based upon what has been heard.

  79. This morning our passage contains parables that challenge us to listen.

  80. And it also contains people who challenge us to listen.

  81. And that's kind of where we're going from here on out.

  82. Firstly, the parables that challenge us to listen.

  83. We come to this incredibly familiar parable, even more familiar to us because we've already had it explained to us by Peter and the children.

  84. The parable of the sore or the parable of the soils.

  85. And this story is incredibly simple, isn't it?

  86. Jesus doesn't have to tell some 400 page masterpiece of literature to make his point.

  87. A sower goes out to sow some seed.

  88. And without the modern aids of a tractor or one pass sowing system, he begins to scatter this seed all over his land.

  89. And as he sows, we see four cases, four options of what happens to the seed.

  90. Jesus explains in verses 14 to 15 how this parable works.

  91. He tells us that the seed in the parable is the word of God.

  92. And as we read through, we discover that the different soils are like different people.

  93. And in each case, how the seed and the soil interacts.

  94. That is how God's word interacts with different people produces massively differing results.

  95. This is one of the incredible truths that we can learn from this parable.

  96. Different people prepared in different ways will respond differently to God's word.

  97. Some will outright reject.

  98. Others will accept it.

  99. But as many of us know all too well, it's not quite that simple.

  100. Some will then fall away.

  101. Others will never quite seem to get to the end goal with it.

  102. But thankfully, others will accept it.

  103. And will believe it.

  104. And will hold on to it.

  105. And will be fruitful.

  106. On one hand, you could read this parable and question the wisdom of the sower, couldn't you?

  107. Why is he so reckless with the seed?

  108. Why so much is seemingly wasted?

  109. Why is the ground not properly prepared?

  110. Why is it?

  111. Why is the seed?

  112. Why is he so reckless with the seed?

  113. Why is the seed that finds good soil is incredibly productive?

  114. If farmers could get a hundred yield from seed, they would give their left arm.

  115. a hundredfold returns is extraordinary

  116. and the seed must go far and wide

  117. to find these patches of good soil

  118. the plan of God

  119. this plan of God

  120. to raise a harvest

  121. by scattering the word of God globally

  122. is not in vain

  123. as is shown by 2,000 years of church history

  124. the gospel will go forth

  125. and it will go on bearing fruit

  126. even as it has across the face of this earth

  127. but on the other hand

  128. many of us perhaps come to this parable

  129. with heavier hearts

  130. and we have real challenging questions

  131. why does my wife

  132. why does my husband not get this

  133. why do my children

  134. never seem to quite make the connections

  135. why do my co-workers

  136. not understand the gospel

  137. why do my classmates

  138. not hear what I'm trying to say to them

  139. and our heavy hearts

  140. they're not wrong

  141. these are hard situations

  142. and there's nothing that I can bring out

  143. from this parable

  144. which will make those circumstances easier

  145. but this does explain why these situations exist

  146. and it does graciously liberate us

  147. from the notion that we are in control

  148. to save people

  149. it reminds us that we have one job

  150. we are to be many seed sowers

  151. and after that the sower

  152. has no direct influence

  153. on what happens with that seed

  154. people respond to the word of God

  155. not based on how well or clever

  156. we present the gospel

  157. but dependent on the state of their hearts

  158. towards the word of God

  159. and maybe we would prefer to have a bigger role

  160. maybe you are desperately struggling with God

  161. because there are loved ones

  162. who have not yet accepted the good news

  163. about Jesus

  164. don't give up

  165. keep on speaking about Jesus

  166. keep on sowing

  167. keep on praying to God

  168. to soften that heart

  169. to clear away those weeds

  170. to enable the seed of the gospel

  171. to grow powerfully

  172. but do not give yourself the heartache

  173. of taking upon yourself

  174. the task of saving a soul

  175. that is a work too great

  176. for any of us to bear

  177. and these are hard questions

  178. and they're the questions

  179. that instantly come to us

  180. when we come to this parable

  181. but these aren't primarily

  182. what Jesus is teaching

  183. through this parable

  184. this is a parable

  185. that turns the lens

  186. not to our unsaved friends

  187. families and people around us

  188. but this is a parable

  189. challenging us to listen

  190. notice verse 8

  191. the summons for all who hear

  192. to pay attention

  193. to what has been said

  194. it happens again in verse 18

  195. at the summary of the explanation

  196. take care then how you hear

  197. the whole point of this passage

  198. the parable of the soils

  199. as well as the parable of the lamp

  200. is that we would examine

  201. our own hearts

  202. not just the hearts

  203. of our neighbours and colleagues

  204. this parable is a tool

  205. for self-diagnosis

  206. and so we must be very frank

  207. with ourselves this morning

  208. are we listening

  209. are we hearing

  210. are we paying attention

  211. to the word of God

  212. and putting it to action

  213. in our lives

  214. perhaps as we think

  215. about how we currently

  216. interact with God's word

  217. we find that we are

  218. far more like the soil

  219. beset by weeds

  220. rather than the good soil

  221. which will be fruitful

  222. maybe tension at home

  223. or stress at work

  224. worries about money

  225. maybe all these things

  226. are crowding in

  227. and strangling

  228. our devotional lives

  229. maybe some of us

  230. are young in the faith

  231. new Christians

  232. and we're only now

  233. starting to feel

  234. the struggles

  235. and trials

  236. that are part and parcel

  237. of the Christian life

  238. are those trials

  239. going to scorch you

  240. are they going to dry you out

  241. and leave you weathered

  242. young Christian

  243. or are your roots

  244. going deep

  245. have you invested

  246. in your walk

  247. with God

  248. so that you are now

  249. able to thrive

  250. even in the hard times

  251. and perhaps

  252. there's even some of us

  253. who have grown hard

  254. to the word of God

  255. we read

  256. and we listen

  257. week by week

  258. and yet nothing

  259. really impacts us

  260. anymore

  261. and it's very

  262. quickly gone

  263. from our minds

  264. and it's a sad

  265. reality

  266. that could be true

  267. for so many of us

  268. here this morning

  269. and these are realities

  270. that we must face up

  271. to

  272. not quietly

  273. excuse

  274. or politely

  275. ignore

  276. because regardless

  277. of how we

  278. evaluate ourselves

  279. the truth

  280. will become

  281. self-evident

  282. maybe not today

  283. and probably

  284. not tomorrow

  285. but only one

  286. of the soils

  287. bore a crop

  288. from the implanted

  289. seed

  290. and likewise

  291. only one response

  292. to the word of God

  293. will bear fruit

  294. you see it in verse 15

  295. don't we

  296. the good soil

  297. they hear the word

  298. just like all of the

  299. other people

  300. and situations

  301. that we've met

  302. so far

  303. but they have

  304. a good

  305. good heart

  306. what does that

  307. look like

  308. is that just

  309. a genetic reality

  310. I mean

  311. what makes

  312. their heart

  313. good

  314. well the answer

  315. is right there

  316. what makes

  317. their heart

  318. good

  319. is that

  320. they hold

  321. on to the word

  322. firmly

  323. they retain

  324. what they have

  325. heard

  326. they dwell

  327. upon that

  328. seed

  329. and fruit

  330. is born

  331. through patience

  332. I noticed

  333. and I couldn't

  334. help noticing

  335. how one of the

  336. children answered

  337. the question

  338. what happened

  339. to the seed

  340. on the good

  341. ground

  342. perhaps you

  343. noticed it as

  344. well

  345. the seed

  346. fell

  347. and it grew

  348. and nothing

  349. bad happened

  350. to it

  351. that's how we

  352. often think of it

  353. isn't it

  354. we have this

  355. unrealistic ideal

  356. I'll become

  357. a Christian

  358. and everything

  359. will be good

  360. from then on

  361. but this

  362. isn't an

  363. unrealistic

  364. ideal

  365. this can

  366. be a reality

  367. in our

  368. lives

  369. to have

  370. hearts

  371. that love

  372. God's word

  373. and then

  374. that patiently

  375. bear fruit

  376. because of it

  377. the same

  378. sun will

  379. come

  380. the same

  381. lack of

  382. rain will

  383. come to

  384. this seed

  385. as to the

  386. one in the

  387. rock

  388. as to all

  389. the others

  390. but this

  391. one has

  392. what it

  393. needs

  394. to survive

  395. this is the

  396. goal to

  397. strive for

  398. so what are

  399. we to do

  400. maybe we

  401. maybe many

  402. of us

  403. need to come

  404. to God

  405. afresh this

  406. morning

  407. we realise

  408. that our

  409. lives are

  410. not matching

  411. up to what

  412. we would

  413. want

  414. perhaps we're

  415. in some

  416. dire need

  417. of weeding

  418. and ploughing

  419. without

  420. which we

  421. cannot be

  422. fruitful

  423. Christians

  424. it's

  425. interesting

  426. I came

  427. off a

  428. farm and

  429. it wasn't

  430. an arable

  431. farm but

  432. there were

  433. plenty of

  434. those around

  435. and weeding

  436. and ploughing

  437. are never

  438. pleasant

  439. exercises

  440. neither are

  441. painless at

  442. the time

  443. but both

  444. are for

  445. the good

  446. of the

  447. soil

  448. and both

  449. will ultimately

  450. be for the

  451. good of the

  452. harvest

  453. so we have

  454. this first

  455. parable

  456. challenging us

  457. to listen

  458. the parable

  459. of the

  460. soils

  461. the other

  462. little parable

  463. here is

  464. perhaps harder

  465. to understand

  466. and it's

  467. much less

  468. dealt with

  469. but if we

  470. see here

  471. that it's a

  472. continuation

  473. of the

  474. explanation

  475. to the

  476. previous

  477. it becomes

  478. just that

  479. little bit

  480. easier

  481. Jesus has

  482. just explained

  483. that we

  484. need to

  485. take care

  486. in how we

  487. listen to

  488. God's word

  489. and in this

  490. case

  491. it's his

  492. word

  493. and now he

  494. goes on to

  495. say that we

  496. ought to put

  497. a lamp

  498. in its

  499. proper place

  500. Jesus loves

  501. to mix

  502. his metaphors

  503. but I think

  504. as we look

  505. at it

  506. the seed

  507. and the

  508. lamp

  509. are the

  510. same

  511. talking about

  512. the same

  513. thing

  514. so having

  515. accepted the

  516. word of

  517. God

  518. we're not

  519. to cover

  520. it or to

  521. conceal it

  522. or to

  523. hide it

  524. but instead

  525. we should

  526. make it

  527. prominent

  528. so that it

  529. may reveal

  530. everything

  531. going on

  532. around it

  533. this lamp

  534. of God's

  535. word

  536. is meant

  537. to be

  538. in the

  539. highest

  540. place

  541. so that

  542. the light

  543. will shine

  544. into every

  545. dark

  546. corner

  547. of the

  548. room

  549. and maybe

  550. this parable

  551. is what's

  552. going to show

  553. us where

  554. we're going

  555. wrong

  556. maybe

  557. just maybe

  558. some of

  559. us are

  560. being exposed

  561. to the

  562. truth

  563. of the

  564. gospel

  565. but as

  566. soon as

  567. that lamp

  568. is lit

  569. it starts

  570. to shine

  571. into the

  572. darkness

  573. of our

  574. hearts

  575. and it

  576. starts to

  577. expose

  578. depths of

  579. unpleasantness

  580. that we'd

  581. never seen

  582. before

  583. it's quite

  584. possible

  585. that as we

  586. begin to

  587. see the

  588. truth of

  589. the gospel

  590. that light

  591. will shine

  592. into our

  593. lives

  594. and we

  595. will see

  596. that there

  597. is stuff

  598. there that

  599. we have

  600. hidden

  601. for years

  602. unexposed

  603. sin

  604. and our

  605. instant response

  606. to that

  607. is to attempt

  608. to cover

  609. it

  610. and to

  611. hide it

  612. and to

  613. extinguish

  614. the lamp

  615. but Jesus

  616. reminds us

  617. that nothing

  618. will remain

  619. hidden

  620. forever

  621. no sin

  622. will go

  623. eternally

  624. unexposed

  625. at the

  626. end of

  627. time

  628. we will

  629. stand

  630. before

  631. God

  632. and all

  633. will be

  634. shown

  635. clearly

  636. there will

  637. be no

  638. excuses

  639. and there

  640. will be

  641. no

  642. cover-ups

  643. and so

  644. we're

  645. called

  646. again

  647. to

  648. carefully

  649. consider

  650. how we

  651. listen

  652. to Jesus

  653. words

  654. to pay

  655. attention

  656. and to

  657. remember

  658. the importance

  659. these words

  660. hold

  661. words

  662. that will

  663. never cease

  664. to be

  665. relevant

  666. the warning

  667. is compounded

  668. with this

  669. final statement

  670. in verse 18

  671. read it there

  672. that those

  673. who have

  674. will gain

  675. more

  676. and that

  677. those who

  678. do not

  679. have

  680. will lose

  681. everything

  682. that they

  683. thought

  684. they had

  685. Jesus

  686. is imploring

  687. us

  688. not to

  689. waste

  690. the opportunity

  691. to listen

  692. to God's

  693. word

  694. and to

  695. lose

  696. everything

  697. because of

  698. our

  699. carelessness

  700. but rather

  701. to pay

  702. close

  703. attention

  704. to the

  705. truth

  706. of God's

  707. word

  708. and be

  709. rewarded

  710. at the

  711. end

  712. with

  713. great

  714. gain

  715. we have

  716. these two

  717. parables

  718. a clear

  719. call

  720. to hear

  721. the word

  722. and to

  723. put it

  724. into

  725. practice

  726. but very

  727. quickly

  728. what about

  729. the rest

  730. of the

  731. passage

  732. it's full

  733. of people

  734. who challenge

  735. us to

  736. listen

  737. at the start

  738. there you'll

  739. have noticed

  740. that Luke

  741. introduces us

  742. to those who are

  743. traveling

  744. with him

  745. and we

  746. find

  747. these twelve

  748. disciples

  749. that we've

  750. met many

  751. times before

  752. but we're

  753. first introduced

  754. to these

  755. interesting

  756. group of

  757. women who

  758. are with

  759. Jesus

  760. there's three

  761. mentioned in

  762. particular

  763. and we know

  764. little or

  765. nothing about

  766. each one of

  767. them

  768. Mary Magdalene

  769. goes on to

  770. become a

  771. witness to

  772. the resurrection

  773. and to the

  774. crucifixion

  775. and she's

  776. experienced

  777. incredible

  778. healing

  779. through Jesus

  780. ministry

  781. Joanna

  782. is this

  783. lady

  784. married to

  785. one of

  786. the top

  787. civil servants

  788. in the

  789. region

  790. and yet

  791. here she

  792. is

  793. instead of

  794. enjoying her

  795. nice

  796. comfortable

  797. middle class

  798. home

  799. she's out

  800. and about

  801. with this

  802. odd

  803. bunch of

  804. disciples

  805. and their

  806. rabbi

  807. and then we

  808. get Susanna

  809. of whom we

  810. know

  811. absolutely

  812. nothing

  813. and a

  814. group of

  815. others who

  816. are all

  817. contributing

  818. to the

  819. ministry

  820. why on

  821. earth is

  822. this here

  823. why does

  824. Luke even

  825. mention

  826. these

  827. women

  828. I think

  829. the most

  830. logical

  831. answer

  832. is that

  833. these are

  834. some of

  835. the people

  836. Luke has

  837. interviewed

  838. remember

  839. that Luke

  840. when he

  841. was building

  842. his gospel

  843. didn't just

  844. go to one

  845. person

  846. he did his

  847. research

  848. he was a

  849. historian

  850. and he

  851. went and

  852. interviewed

  853. people

  854. and it's

  855. likely that

  856. these ladies

  857. are those

  858. who are

  859. still able

  860. to verify

  861. what went

  862. on 20 or

  863. 30 years

  864. earlier

  865. these are

  866. the witnesses

  867. to what

  868. Jesus taught

  869. and what

  870. Jesus did

  871. and why

  872. does he

  873. mention them

  874. here

  875. because I

  876. think they're

  877. an example

  878. of what

  879. Jesus is

  880. just about

  881. to teach

  882. what we've

  883. just heard

  884. him teach

  885. that these

  886. three women

  887. and the

  888. others

  889. are people

  890. who are

  891. following

  892. because they've

  893. been transformed

  894. by the word

  895. of God

  896. in their

  897. lives

  898. whether

  899. from

  900. demonic

  901. possession

  902. or from

  903. a life

  904. of middle

  905. class

  906. domestic

  907. bliss

  908. or from

  909. utter

  910. obscurity

  911. these women

  912. are examples

  913. of people

  914. who are

  915. good soil

  916. who have

  917. put the

  918. lamp of

  919. God's word

  920. in its

  921. most prominent

  922. place

  923. in their

  924. lives

  925. so that

  926. all who

  927. come into

  928. contact

  929. with them

  930. will hear

  931. and see

  932. the good

  933. news

  934. of Jesus

  935. Christ

  936. at the

  937. end of

  938. the passage

  939. we have

  940. this other

  941. curious story

  942. about Jesus

  943. family coming

  944. to find

  945. him

  946. and Jesus

  947. response

  948. is sometimes

  949. read as

  950. kind of a

  951. curt dismissal

  952. of his

  953. family

  954. but let me

  955. ask a question

  956. or two

  957. here

  958. we've just

  959. seen all

  960. these ladies

  961. who are

  962. travelling far

  963. from their

  964. homes

  965. to be

  966. with Jesus

  967. why isn't

  968. Jesus'

  969. family with

  970. him

  971. I wonder

  972. why is

  973. this house

  974. packed out

  975. with people

  976. but his

  977. family aren't

  978. making up

  979. the numbers

  980. I wonder

  981. where they

  982. land at

  983. this stage

  984. in the

  985. soils

  986. that Jesus

  987. has just

  988. been talking

  989. about

  990. and rather

  991. than thinking

  992. that Jesus

  993. is dismissing

  994. his natural

  995. family here

  996. look at

  997. what he's

  998. actually doing

  999. he's opening

  1000. the doors

  1001. of his

  1002. family

  1003. or opening

  1004. the arms

  1005. of his

  1006. family

  1007. to everyone

  1008. and to

  1009. anyone

  1010. who would

  1011. heed

  1012. the word

  1013. of God

  1014. if we're

  1015. Christians

  1016. here this

  1017. morning

  1018. we still

  1019. benefit from

  1020. that

  1021. to

  1022. millennia

  1023. later

  1024. that we

  1025. who are

  1026. those

  1027. who hear

  1028. and do

  1029. God's

  1030. word

  1031. are accepted

  1032. into his

  1033. family

  1034. that's

  1035. incredible

  1036. the third

  1037. and final

  1038. group

  1039. is the

  1040. disciples

  1041. notice what's

  1042. said in

  1043. verses 9

  1044. and 10

  1045. they've

  1046. come

  1047. and they've

  1048. heard this

  1049. parable

  1050. and they're

  1051. unsure

  1052. they're

  1053. confused

  1054. so like

  1055. us

  1056. but Jesus

  1057. teaches them

  1058. an incredible

  1059. little lesson

  1060. right in the

  1061. middle

  1062. here

  1063. to them

  1064. these

  1065. ragtag

  1066. bunch

  1067. of fishermen

  1068. and outcasts

  1069. to them

  1070. the secrets

  1071. of the

  1072. kingdom

  1073. are given

  1074. not to the

  1075. social elite

  1076. not to the

  1077. academic

  1078. theologians

  1079. but to

  1080. these men

  1081. who have

  1082. encountered

  1083. the word

  1084. of God

  1085. and who

  1086. are being

  1087. radically

  1088. transformed

  1089. from a

  1090. random

  1091. collection

  1092. of men

  1093. into the

  1094. initial team

  1095. through which

  1096. God will bring

  1097. his saving

  1098. word to

  1099. every corner

  1100. of the

  1101. world

  1102. as we've

  1103. gathered here

  1104. this morning

  1105. we have

  1106. been given

  1107. the secrets

  1108. of the

  1109. kingdom

  1110. of God

  1111. plain as

  1112. day

  1113. written in

  1114. English

  1115. bound in

  1116. a book

  1117. we have

  1118. this incredible

  1119. opportunity

  1120. to hear

  1121. how God's

  1122. kingdom

  1123. works and

  1124. operates

  1125. and we've

  1126. heard these

  1127. incredible

  1128. truths

  1129. and so

  1130. here's the

  1131. challenge of

  1132. the disciples

  1133. to us

  1134. we've heard

  1135. the word

  1136. now what

  1137. are we

  1138. going to

  1139. do with

  1140. it

  1141. are we

  1142. too busy

  1143. and too

  1144. distracted

  1145. or are we

  1146. going to

  1147. say yes

  1148. I am

  1149. listening

  1150. and I am

  1151. going to put

  1152. this in the

  1153. right place

  1154. in my life

  1155. and do

  1156. what it

  1157. says to

  1158. me

  1159. today

  1160. we
