  1. Well, good morning. Good to see you all this morning. It's good to be back here at Brunsfield.

  2. I think anyway, it's the first time that I've ever met anyone who names their plants, but

  3. I guess that's an Italian thing, is it? It's all right. I got a bit of Italian blood running

  4. through me as well, but never named any plants yet. But Graziella, was that it? Graziellina.

  5. Is that like little thank you or something, or what is it? Graziellina. Grace is a name.

  6. That's good. All right. I won't find out the rest of your plants' names just now.

  7. Okay. Time's marching on, so let's turn to Luke chapter 8. If you have a Bible, go to Luke

Luke 8 chapter mention Luke 8 chapter mention

  8. chapter 8, where I understand you've been walking with Jesus through Galilee this morning,

  9. chapter 8. We're going to look into two different occasions in the life of Christ here in Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  10. chapter 8. There are so many of these in the Gospels where Jesus really does stun people

  11. with the reality of who He is. I think that's probably, if you want a big picture of the Gospels,

  12. I think one of the major themes of the Gospels coincides with what I think seems to be the major

  13. theme of God's revelation in all the Bible, which is Him, how great He is. I think that's really what

  14. glory is all about. It is about something to do with the expression of the greatness of God. And so that

  15. theme just runs through all of the Bible. And particularly, you would expect to see it so much in the Gospels,

  16. because the Gospels are just accounts of the life of God as a man. So you would expect to see just the greatness

  17. of who this man is, God in human flesh, right the way through the Gospels. And you're not disappointed.

  18. You see that it's right the way through the Gospels here. Jesus, again, stunning His audience by the

  19. things that He does. The first incident takes place, we're told, verse 22, on a certain day that He got into a

  20. boat with His disciples. And He said to them, let us cross over to the other side of the lake.

  21. And they launched out. But as they sailed, He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake,

  22. and they were filling with water and were in jeopardy. And they came to Jesus and woke Him up.

  23. saying, Master, Master, we're perishing. Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water.

  24. And they ceased. And there was a calm. But He said to them, where is your faith?

  25. And they were afraid and marveled, saying to one another, who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water.

  26. And they obey Him.

  27. Way back at the beginning of the Bible, we're told that Satan employs a tactic.

  28. We don't quite know yet exactly who this is in the form of the serpent back in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  29. But we find out as the Bible story unfolds that it is Satan.

  30. And he is employing a tactic there that proves to be overwhelmingly successful.

  31. Dethroning God ultimately in the hearts of men by tempting them to doubt.

  32. To doubt. To doubt in this instance, God's word.

  33. And to doubt, I believe, an extension of that, the greatness of His character.

  34. So we are, in a sense, our word.

  35. We're as good as our word.

  36. Right? We even say that about people.

  37. He's as good as His word.

  38. And we mean that He's got character.

  39. And so God's word is always tied in with God's character.

  40. God's word is always tied in with God's spirit.

  41. It always disturbs me when people describe churches as,

  42. well, you know, this church has the spirit and this church has the word.

  43. And, you know, people go around this church to get a bit of the spirit

  44. and then that church to get a bit of the word.

  45. It never works that way.

  46. All these things have always been and will always be

  47. just intricately joined together because that's who God is.

  48. But back in the garden, Satan tempted the man and the woman

  49. to doubt the word of God and the greatness of His character.

  50. And ultimately, then, the faith and dependence

  51. that the man and the woman had on God when they were created

  52. were replaced with doubt and self-reliance.

  53. And without wanting to be too overly simplistic here,

  54. I'd like to suggest to you that the rest of the Bible story,

  55. including the gospel,

  56. is a revelation of God's design

  57. to turn human beings back

  58. from doubt and self-reliance,

  59. which we're good at,

  60. and I'll hopefully make that point as we go through this story,

  61. to turn us back from doubt and self-reliance

  62. to a life of faith and dependence on God.

  63. Isn't that what the gospel is designed to do?

  64. Because I'm not born trusting in God.

  65. I'm not born depending on God.

  66. I'm born with a very, very keen sense of self-dependency

  67. and desire for self-fulfillment.

  68. Is that not fair?

  69. When I cried as a baby,

  70. so I understand.

  71. I wasn't crying because people weren't getting saved.

  72. Because I wanted more people to depend on God

  73. and I wanted to know God more.

  74. I was crying because I had a need

  75. and I wanted it fulfilled.

  76. And as a young child,

  77. when I threw tantrums

  78. and I screamed and I yelled,

  79. I wasn't screaming and yelling

  80. because I wanted the church to grow.

  81. I was screaming and yelling

  82. because I wanted a toy

  83. or I wanted a nap

  84. or I wanted something.

  85. It was just a very, very keenly felt sense

  86. of what I wanted.

  87. That's how I'm born.

  88. That's how we're all born.

  89. And the very point of the gospel

  90. is for God to transform

  91. that sense of self-reliance

  92. that we're born with

  93. and that we live with.

  94. And if nothing happens,

  95. that we will die with.

  96. Is that fair?

  97. We'll die

  98. with that same sense of self-reliance

  99. and doubt

  100. if God doesn't do something to change us.

  101. Wouldn't it be great

  102. if somewhere along the line

  103. we could just kind of get

  104. like a doubt inoculation every year?

  105. Wouldn't that be great

  106. if we could just go somewhere

  107. and get a jag

  108. and that would be it?

  109. One jab in January

  110. and then we're kind of soaring

  111. on the wings of faith

  112. for the rest of the year.

  113. The only problem is

  114. the Bible doesn't tell that story.

  115. The Bible tells a story

  116. of men and women

  117. who are earnest to please God

  118. but really seriously want to do well.

  119. Some of the songs we sang

  120. or was it in your intro slides this morning?

  121. I think that's what you were trying

  122. to communicate about the church.

  123. Just broken people

  124. but serious about faith,

  125. serious about Christ,

  126. earnest to please God

  127. and yet probably

  128. if the truth were known

  129. for many of us,

  130. plagued in many ways by doubt.

  131. From Eve to Abraham,

  132. from David to Zechariah,

  133. from Peter to Thomas,

  134. even John the Baptist

  135. succumbs to this one,

  136. doesn't he?

  137. Luke 7.20 tells us

  138. that after John recognizes

  139. that Jesus is the Lamb of God

  140. who takes away the sins of the world,

  141. he still asks,

  142. Jesus, are you the one

  143. or are we to expect someone else?

  144. One man writes,

  145. had the Bible been written

  146. by a public relations agency,

  147. they would have eliminated that verse.

  148. It's not good PR strategy

  149. to admit that one of the cabinet members

  150. has doubts about the president.

  151. I'm sure there may be

  152. a lot of folks nowadays

  153. that have doubts about the president

  154. and won't go there.

  155. You don't let stories like that

  156. get out if you're trying

  157. to present a united front.

  158. But the scriptures

  159. weren't written by personality agents,

  160. they were inspired

  161. by an eternal God

  162. who knew that every disciple

  163. from then on

  164. would spend time

  165. in the dungeon of doubt.

  166. Could I suggest to you

  167. that perhaps,

  168. suggest to you,

  169. this is up for grabs,

  170. okay,

  171. but could I suggest to you

  172. that perhaps the real point

  173. of this little story here

  174. in Luke 8

  175. isn't how flimsy the boats were

  176. in Jesus' day

  177. or how quick you could get caught up

  178. in a storm on the Sea of Galilee

  179. if you're not careful.

  180. I'm not even sure,

  181. and I say this carefully,

  182. that the main point here

  183. is how powerful Jesus is

  184. in being able to still the storm,

  185. although that is a main point here.

  186. However,

  187. I wonder if,

  188. along with this amazing revelation

  189. of the deity

  190. and the majesty of Jesus

  191. in this passage,

  192. Luke is not trying also

  193. to get us to see

  194. how rotten we are

  195. at trusting God,

  196. but how faithful God is

  197. at delivering us.

  198. Now that's just a thought,

  199. but I'd like to try

  200. and develop that thought

  201. as we go through here.

  202. I don't think

  203. the whole purpose here

  204. is just to see

  205. how great Jesus is,

  206. because Jesus could have

  207. just kind of flown in the air,

  208. turned into a big flaming star,

  209. and you know,

  210. I mean,

  211. that would have done it

  212. for these guys, right?

  213. But it's not.

  214. The story here,

  215. as is the whole story

  216. of the gospel,

  217. is entwined with humanity,

  218. isn't it?

  219. The gospel works

  220. with just real life human beings,

  221. and part of the real life deal here

  222. is how quick these guys are

  223. to doubt.

  224. How easy it is for them

  225. to doubt the Lord.

  226. Where is your faith,

  227. Jesus says in verse 25?

  228. Or,

  229. why are you so timid?

  230. How is it that you have no faith?

  231. That's how Mark records it

  232. in his gospel.

  233. Or,

  234. oh,

  235. men of little faith,

  236. Mark's gospel says.

  237. And so guess what?

  238. That being the reality

  239. that we struggle with faith,

  240. the faith life is not an easy life,

  241. is it?

  242. It's a great life,

  243. it's a great life,

  244. but the faith life

  245. is not an easy life.

  246. I find it hard to keep going

  247. when I've never yet met Christ

  248. face to face.

  249. And so I'm challenged

  250. to give up everything,

  251. all my dreams,

  252. all my goals,

  253. all my personal aspirations.

  254. God challenges me

  255. to give all those up

  256. and I've never yet seen him

  257. face to face.

  258. That's not easy.

  259. It's worth it.

  260. And it's the way

  261. that God has designed for us

  262. to be reunited to him

  263. through Christ

  264. by faith,

  265. right?

  266. By grace you're saved

  267. through faith,

  268. but it's not an easy life.

  269. And knowing that to be the case,

  270. God sends a storm.

  271. You'd think,

  272. in a sense,

  273. that the last thing

  274. doubting people really need

  275. is a storm.

  276. You'd think they need a cuddle,

  277. right?

  278. Or a pat on the back.

  279. But he sends a storm.

  280. He knows what he's doing

  281. to help the disciples

  282. develop their faith.

  283. Isn't that interesting?

  284. Peter says,

  285. 1 Peter 4,

    1 Peter 4:12

  286. verse 12,

  287. Don't be surprised

  288. at the fiery ordeal

  289. that comes upon you

  290. to test you

  291. as though some strange thing

  292. were happening to you.

  293. But rejoice

  294. inasmuch as you participate

  295. in the sufferings of Christ

  296. so that you may be overjoyed

  297. when his glory

  298. is revealed.

  299. Jesus had said,

  300. we're told in the story,

  301. Jesus had said,

  302. get in the boat

  303. and we're going

  304. to the other side

  305. of the lake.

  306. How did the song go

  307. that we sang this morning,

  308. My Lighthouse,

  309. My Lighthouse?

  310. How was the bit about

  311. he's going to lead us

  312. safe to shore?

  313. Right?

  314. I just thought it was really good.

  315. Somebody's been either

  316. doing their homework,

  317. okay,

  318. in putting the service

  319. together this morning

  320. or God's just kind of

  321. overrun the whole thing

  322. and done what he wanted

  323. to do anyway.

  324. Jesus had said,

  325. get in the boat

  326. because we're going

  327. to the other side

  328. of the lake.

  329. And off they go

  330. across the water

  331. and we're told

  332. that somewhere along

  333. the line,

  334. Jesus falls asleep.

  335. Just another great reminder

  336. that Jesus was God,

  337. yes,

  338. but he was human.

  339. He's tired,

  340. he's weary,

  341. falls asleep.

  342. Soon as he falls asleep,

  343. it seems,

  344. there's this,

  345. verse 23,

  346. this fierce storm arises.

  347. This fierce gale of wind

  348. descends on the lake.

  349. Matthew uses the word,

  350. okay,

  351. the terminology

  352. that Matthew chooses to use,

  353. the words are

  354. megas seismos.

  355. That's the two Greek words

  356. that he uses

  357. and you can almost figure out

  358. what he's saying,

  359. right?

  360. Megas seismos.

  361. Megas seismic.

  362. This is a mega seismic storm.

  363. Okay?

  364. So you get the idea

  365. that it's big.

  366. It's big.

  367. So the disciples

  368. aren't being wimps here.

  369. You know,

  370. it's not that the boat

  371. is starting to rock

  372. a little bit

  373. and they've never been,

  374. you know,

  375. they're fishermen.

  376. A lot of these guys,

  377. they know what it's like

  378. to be on the water.

  379. So they're familiar

  380. with storms.

  381. So for these guys

  382. to be freaking out,

  383. for these guys

  384. to be freaking out

  385. is big.

  386. Is big.

  387. The Sea of Galilee,

  388. 680 feet below sea level.

  389. It's surrounded by hills,

  390. some of which are

  391. almost 2,000 feet

  392. high above sea level.

  393. The temperature

  394. and pressure changes

  395. because of all of that

  396. result of the climate

  397. in the area

  398. along with the kind of

  399. geography of the lake

  400. caused some cracking storms.

  401. It was just kind of

  402. a storm center.

  403. Really,

  404. it was perfect for storms.

  405. Perfectly suited

  406. because of where it was

  407. for some great storms.

  408. And they're in one.

  409. And the water is coming in

  410. and the faith is draining out.

  411. Isn't it?

  412. They're in one.

  413. It's a big storm.

  414. And they're starting to doubt.

  415. These are storms.

  416. We have life storms.

  417. And as we have life storms

  418. and we feel the water's coming in,

  419. it's very easy to feel

  420. the faith draining out.

  421. Is it not?

  422. Anybody in a storm right now?

  423. We've been in a bit of a storm

  424. in our family here

  425. for the last five years

  426. and we're weary.

  427. We're weary.

  428. We're tired.

  429. Our patience has run very thin.

  430. We're very human.

  431. God is showing us even more

  432. how broken we are

  433. and how easy it is

  434. in those circumstances

  435. for us to begin to doubt.

  436. And so they wake Jesus up saying,

  437. Master, we're perishing.

  438. Now what are they forgetting?

  439. What are they?

  440. Well, they're forgetting

  441. that Jesus is in the boat

  442. with them.

  443. They're forgetting

  444. that it's not been all that long,

  445. if you read before this account,

  446. that he's healed

  447. the centurion servant,

  448. that he has raised

  449. the son of the widow

  450. of Nain from the dead.

  451. But they're also forgetting

  452. that Jesus had said,

  453. let's go to the other side

  454. of the lake.

  455. How quick I am

  456. to forget

  457. that God has promised me

  458. that not only

  459. am I his treasured possession

  460. in Christ,

  461. Ephesians 1.14,

  462. and his beloved child

  463. by adoption,

  464. John 1.12,

  465. and his precious bride

  466. by faith,

  467. but how quick I am

  468. to forget

  469. that he is never going

  470. to leave me

  471. or forsake me

  472. and that he is going

  473. to lead me safely

  474. to the other side.

  475. So being aroused,

  476. verse 24,

  477. he rebukes the wind

  478. and the surging waves

  479. and they stop

  480. and it becomes calm

  481. and he says to them,

  482. where is your faith?

  483. It's not that they can't

  484. have faith,

  485. it's that they're looking

  486. at the wrong thing.

  487. My greatest need

  488. when I get caught

  489. in a doubt storm,

  490. I think,

  491. is a fresh recognition

  492. of the power of God

  493. in the person of Christ,

  494. isn't it?

  495. Many years ago,

  496. I had a breakdown

  497. and I was out of work

  498. for almost a year

  499. and one of the things

  500. that God used

  501. during that time

  502. in my life

  503. was the Gospels,

  504. the life of Christ,

  505. just walking with Christ

  506. and walking with Christ

  507. and listening to Christ

  508. and observing how he lived

  509. and what he said.

  510. So glad you're going

  511. through Luke's Gospel

  512. just now.

  513. It's a great place to be

  514. when doubt storms hit,

  515. turning my doubt

  516. and self-reliance

  517. back into faith

  518. and God dependence.

  519. Well,

  520. that's the first scenario.

  521. The second scenario

  522. here in Luke 8

  523. brings a different

  524. kind of challenge

  525. to the whole faith issue,

  526. but it's still a challenge

  527. to us,

  528. to faith.

  529. This time,

  530. it's in the life

  531. of a demon-possessed man.

  532. So we'll pick it up

  533. in verse 26.

  534. And then they sailed

  535. to the country

  536. of the Gadarenes,

  537. which is opposite Galilee.

  538. And when he stepped

  539. out on the land,

  540. okay,

  541. so that's just a reminder

  542. that they had reached

  543. the other side,

  544. okay?

  545. So it's just kind of

  546. a continuation,

  547. really,

  548. of the last story.

  549. But when he stepped

  550. out on the land,

  551. there met him

  552. a certain man

  553. from the city

  554. who had demons

  555. for a long time.

  556. And he wore

  557. no clothes,

  558. nor did he live

  559. in a house,

  560. but in the tombs.

  561. When he saw Jesus,

  562. he cried out,

  563. fell down before him,

  564. and with a loud voice

  565. said,

  566. What have I to do

  567. with you,

  568. Jesus,

  569. Son of the Most High God?

  570. I beg you,

  571. do not torment me.

  572. For he had commanded

  573. the unclean spirit

  574. to come out of the man.

  575. For it had often

  576. seized him,

  577. and he was kept

  578. under guard,

  579. bound with chains

  580. and shackles,

  581. and he broke

  582. the bonds

  583. and was driven

  584. by the demon

  585. into the wilderness.

  586. Jesus asked him,

  587. saying,

  588. What is your name?

  589. And he said,

  590. Legion,

  591. because many demons

  592. had entered him.

  593. And they begged him

  594. that he would not

  595. command them

  596. to go out

  597. into the abyss.

  598. Now a herd

  599. of many swine

  600. was feeding there

  601. on the mountain,

  602. so they begged him

  603. that he would permit them

  604. to enter them,

  605. and he permitted them.

  606. Then the demons

  607. went out of the man

  608. and entered the swine,

  609. and the herd

  610. ran violently

  611. down the steep place

  612. into the lake

  613. and drowned.

  614. When those

  615. who had fed them

  616. saw what had happened,

  617. they fled

  618. and told in the city

  619. and in the country.

  620. Then they went out

  621. to see what had happened

  622. and came to Jesus

  623. and found the man

  624. from whom

  625. the demons

  626. had departed,

  627. sitting at the feet

  628. of Jesus,

  629. clothed

  630. and in his right mind.

  631. and they were afraid.

  632. They also,

  633. who had seen it,

  634. told them

  635. by what means

  636. he who had been

  637. demon-possessed

  638. was healed.

  639. Wow.

  640. Then the whole multitude

  641. of the surrounding region

  642. region

  643. of the Gadarenes

  644. asked Jesus

  645. to go,

  646. to leave,

  647. to depart

  648. from them.

  649. For they were seized

  650. with great fear.

  651. and so he got

  652. into the boat

  653. and returned.

  654. But the man

  655. from whom

  656. the demons

  657. had departed

  658. begged him

  659. to stay.

  660. Begged him

  661. that he might

  662. be with him.

  663. But Jesus

  664. sent him

  665. away

  666. saying,

  667. return to your

  668. own house

  669. and tell

  670. what great

  671. things God

  672. has done

  673. for you.

  674. And he went

  675. his way

  676. and proclaimed

  677. throughout

  678. the whole city

  679. what great

  680. things

  681. Jesus

  682. had

  683. done

  684. for

  685. him.

  686. Now let me

  687. say

  688. that I find

  689. that passage

  690. at one

  691. and the same

  692. time

  693. fascinating

  694. and frightening.

  695. Fascinating

  696. because

  697. of the

  698. insight

  699. that we're

  700. given

  701. into a

  702. world

  703. that we

  704. can't see.

  705. We would

  706. never know

  707. what's going

  708. on here

  709. if Jesus

  710. hadn't told

  711. us.

  712. And this

  713. is fascinating

  714. that so often

  715. in the Bible

  716. God gives

  717. us insight

  718. into things

  719. that we

  720. would never

  721. know were

  722. there

  723. or would

  724. never know

  725. are true

  726. or would

  727. never be

  728. aware of

  729. if he

  730. hadn't

  731. told us.

  732. So

  733. fascinating.

  734. But I also

  735. find that

  736. passage rather

  737. frightening

  738. because

  739. this

  740. world that

  741. we can't

  742. see is

  743. real

  744. and it's

  745. powerful

  746. and it's

  747. very evil.

  748. Paul

  749. writes

  750. to the

  751. Ephesians

  752. that our

  753. battle is

  754. not against

  755. flesh and

  756. blood.

  757. It's not

  758. just you

  759. think you're

  760. fighting all

  761. the time

  762. against what

  763. you can

  764. see.

  765. And God

  766. says in

  767. actual fact

  768. we have

  769. to be

  770. really

  771. careful

  772. not to

  773. get sucked

  774. into fighting

  775. the wrong

  776. enemy.

  777. And this

  778. happens all

  779. the time.

  780. It happens

  781. in life.

  782. It happens

  783. in offices.

  784. It happens

  785. in communities.

  786. It happens

  787. in families.

  788. And it

  789. happens in

  790. churches.

  791. Where we

  792. get sucked

  793. into in a

  794. similar sense

  795. bamboozled

  796. by the

  797. enemy to

  798. fight the

  799. other guy.

  800. Not him

  801. but to

  802. fight the

  803. other guy

  804. and to

  805. fight the

  806. wrong enemy.

  807. You've got to

  808. be really

  809. careful.

  810. God tells

  811. us that our

  812. battle is

  813. not against

  814. flesh and

  815. blood.

  816. The real

  817. issue, the

  818. real fight,

  819. the real

  820. battle, the

  821. real warfare

  822. that we're to

  823. fight particularly

  824. as those who

  825. belong to

  826. Christ is

  827. the enemy.

  828. Not the

  829. rest of the

  830. body.

  831. Not those

  832. that we're

  833. intimately

  834. linked to

  835. by faith.

  836. But so

  837. often we

  838. take our

  839. eye off the

  840. ball again

  841. and we

  842. fight the

  843. wrong enemy.

  844. Our battle

  845. is not

  846. against

  847. flesh and

  848. blood.

  849. It's

  850. against the

  851. rulers,

  852. the powers,

  853. the world

  854. forces of

  855. this darkness.

  856. This stuff

  857. is real.

  858. It's here.

  859. People think

  860. that somehow

  861. just because

  862. we close

  863. the doors

  864. of the

  865. church,

  866. we keep

  867. the evil

  868. forces at

  869. bay.

  870. We don't.

  871. We do

  872. that,

  873. what we'll

  874. see in a

  875. minute,

  876. by resisting

  877. them,

  878. not by just

  879. closing the

  880. doors.

  881. In fact,

  882. sometimes I

  883. think Satan

  884. does some

  885. of his

  886. best work

  887. right here

  888. among

  889. believers,

  890. just causing

  891. disunity

  892. or distraction

  893. from opportunities

  894. that we have

  895. to grow

  896. and to

  897. feed and

  898. to be built

  899. up and

  900. strengthened

  901. and a

  902. real powerful

  903. force for

  904. God in

  905. the world

  906. and in

  907. this city.

  908. Sometimes I

  909. think he

  910. does some

  911. of his

  912. best work

  913. here by

  914. holding us

  915. down and

  916. distracting us

  917. from the

  918. real goal and

  919. the real

  920. purpose that

  921. God has

  922. called us

  923. to as

  924. followers of

  925. Christ.

  926. Sometimes I

  927. think he

  928. does some

  929. of his

  930. best work

  931. here.

  932. We think,

  933. oh no,

  934. Satan's out in

  935. the pubs and

  936. the clubs and

  937. the brothels and

  938. all.

  939. That's the lust

  940. of the flesh

  941. that almost

  942. just takes care

  943. of itself.

  944. It almost

  945. just self

  946. perpetuates.

  947. Be careful,

  948. be careful,

  949. be aware.

  950. Yes,

  951. it's fascinating

  952. to see beyond

  953. the veneer of

  954. just what we

  955. can see and

  956. sense with our

  957. five senses.

  958. There's more.

  959. Yes,

  960. it's fascinating,

  961. but it's also

  962. very frightening.

  963. These are world

  964. forces of

  965. darkness,

  966. spiritual forces

  967. of wickedness,

  968. Paul says,

  969. in heavenly

  970. places.

  971. The Bible tells

  972. us that demons

  973. can do many

  974. things.

  975. They can exhibit

  976. superhuman strength.

  977. They oppose

  978. the purposes of

  979. God in the

  980. world.

  981. They're incredibly

  982. subtle and

  983. crafty.

  984. They promote

  985. idolatry.

  986. They promote

  987. false religion.

  988. They deceive

  989. and move the

  990. nations.

  991. They afflict

  992. people physically.

  993. They possess

  994. people.

  995. They're invisible,

  996. but they're

  997. capable of

  998. manifestation.

  999. They have

  1000. supernatural

  1001. intelligence.

  1002. They cooperate

  1003. with one

  1004. another.

  1005. They slander

  1006. God before

  1007. men, but

  1008. they also

  1009. slander men

  1010. before God.

  1011. They have

  1012. access to the

  1013. thoughts of

  1014. believers.

  1015. They blind

  1016. the minds

  1017. of unbelievers.

  1018. They accuse,

  1019. they pervert,

  1020. they bewitch,

  1021. they degrade,

  1022. they attack,

  1023. they tempt.

  1024. They even

  1025. disguise themselves

  1026. as being good.

  1027. Angels of

  1028. light.

  1029. Those are all

  1030. things and

  1031. there's more

  1032. that the Bible

  1033. tells us

  1034. Satan and

  1035. his demons

  1036. do.

  1037. So whatever

  1038. you do,

  1039. don't be

  1040. fooled by

  1041. the fact

  1042. that you

  1043. can't see

  1044. them.

  1045. They're as

  1046. real as

  1047. you are,

  1048. but equally

  1049. don't be

  1050. intimidated by

  1051. them.

  1052. Don't be

  1053. intimidated by

  1054. them.

  1055. I remember,

  1056. I'm sure it

  1057. was John

  1058. Piper,

  1059. I remember

  1060. him sharing

  1061. in a

  1062. conference

  1063. once,

  1064. you know,

  1065. just about

  1066. growing as

  1067. he's grown

  1068. as a

  1069. believer,

  1070. he's grown

  1071. to respect

  1072. the power

  1073. of the

  1074. enemy,

  1075. but not

  1076. to be

  1077. afraid of

  1078. him.

  1079. And then

  1080. he just

  1081. kind of

  1082. told a

  1083. story and

  1084. he said,

  1085. you know,

  1086. he imagined

  1087. himself just

  1088. kind of

  1089. waking up

  1090. one night

  1091. with some

  1092. kind of

  1093. green-looking,

  1094. ugly,

  1095. goblin kind

  1096. of creature

  1097. at the foot

  1098. of his bed,

  1099. just, you

  1100. know,

  1101. kind of

  1102. waking him

  1103. up in the

  1104. middle of

  1105. the night

  1106. and maybe

  1107. his first

  1108. response

  1109. was a bit

  1110. of shock

  1111. at this

  1112. thing in

  1113. his room,

  1114. this presence

  1115. that was

  1116. there,

  1117. you know,

  1118. just ugly

  1119. looking

  1120. creature.

  1121. And he

  1122. thought,

  1123. you know,

  1124. once I

  1125. gained my

  1126. presence of

  1127. mind,

  1128. I think I

  1129. would just

  1130. say,

  1131. and?

  1132. Yes?

  1133. Can I

  1134. help you?

  1135. Because

  1136. that's about

  1137. the best

  1138. they can

  1139. do.

  1140. Don't be

  1141. intimidated

  1142. by them

  1143. because

  1144. greater is

  1145. he who

  1146. is in

  1147. you than

  1148. he that

  1149. is in

  1150. the world.

  1151. Don't be

  1152. fooled by

  1153. the fact

  1154. you can't

  1155. see them,

  1156. but don't

  1157. be intimidated

  1158. by them.

  1159. The New

  1160. Testament

  1161. epistles,

  1162. and I

  1163. don't have

  1164. time to

  1165. go into

  1166. demonology

  1167. this morning,

  1168. but the

  1169. New Testament

  1170. epistles,

  1171. which I

  1172. believe should

  1173. be read in

  1174. a very unique

  1175. way,

  1176. distinct in

  1177. a sense

  1178. from just

  1179. the Gospels.

  1180. We're not

  1181. to take all

  1182. of our

  1183. marching

  1184. orders

  1185. necessarily

  1186. from the

  1187. Gospels.

  1188. That's an

  1189. historical

  1190. account of

  1191. the life

  1192. of Christ,

  1193. there's

  1194. many

  1195. lessons

  1196. to

  1197. learn,

  1198. there's

  1199. many

  1200. commands

  1201. to

  1202. obey.

  1203. But by

  1204. and large,

  1205. the New

  1206. Testament

  1207. epistles

  1208. are the

  1209. marching

  1210. orders

  1211. for the

  1212. church.

  1213. They are

  1214. the

  1215. marching

  1216. orders

  1217. for the

  1218. church.

  1219. And the

  1220. New

  1221. Testament

  1222. epistles

  1223. give us

  1224. one primary

  1225. bit of

  1226. direction

  1227. when it

  1228. comes to

  1229. dealing with

  1230. Satan

  1231. and his

  1232. cohorts.

  1233. Do you

  1234. know what

  1235. it is?

  1236. Resist.

  1237. One

  1238. primary

  1239. bit of

  1240. information.

  1241. One

  1242. primary

  1243. directive.

  1244. Resist.

  1245. Because the

  1246. greatest

  1247. weapon,

  1248. it seems,

  1249. that Satan

  1250. has against

  1251. us is

  1252. temptation.

  1253. So I

  1254. guess if I

  1255. wake up

  1256. tonight and

  1257. there's some

  1258. green kind

  1259. of goblin

  1260. looking creature

  1261. at the foot

  1262. of my bed,

  1263. I want to

  1264. say,

  1265. and?

  1266. It seems

  1267. as though the

  1268. greatest weapon

  1269. he has against

  1270. us is

  1271. temptation.

  1272. And if we

  1273. resist,

  1274. think about

  1275. this,

  1276. if the

  1277. greatest

  1278. weapon is

  1279. temptation

  1280. and I

  1281. resist,

  1282. where does

  1283. that leave

  1284. him?

  1285. Powerless.

  1286. Powerless.

  1287. That's the

  1288. whole point.

  1289. Matthew 4,

  1290. 11,

  1291. Jesus resisted

  1292. Satan's

  1293. temptation in

  1294. the wilderness

  1295. and we're

  1296. told that

  1297. the devil

  1298. left him.

  1299. Ephesians 6,

  1300. we're told

  1301. twice to

  1302. stand firm

  1303. and in

  1304. verse 13,

  1305. we're told

  1306. to take up

  1307. the full

  1308. armor of

  1309. God that

  1310. we may be

  1311. able to

  1312. resist in

  1313. the evil

  1314. day.

  1315. James 4,

    James 4:7

  1316. verse 7

  1317. says,

  1318. resist the

  1319. devil and

  1320. he will

  1321. flee from

  1322. you.

  1323. Do you

  1324. know where

  1325. he'll go?

  1326. He'll

  1327. go and

  1328. find somebody

  1329. else who

  1330. won't

  1331. resist.

  1332. But if

  1333. you resist,

  1334. he has

  1335. no other

  1336. recourse than

  1337. to leave

  1338. you alone

  1339. because he

  1340. can't do

  1341. anything else.

  1342. In 1 Peter

  1343. 5, 8,

  1344. be of sober

  1345. spirit,

  1346. be on the

  1347. alert,

  1348. your adversary

  1349. the devil

  1350. prowls about

  1351. like a

  1352. roaring lion,

  1353. always ugly,

  1354. always big,

  1355. always ferocious,

  1356. always mean.

  1357. He prowls about

  1358. like a roaring

  1359. lion seeking

  1360. someone to

  1361. resist a

  1362. picture of

  1363. that.

  1364. Oh,

  1365. it's awful.

  1366. But resist

  1367. him.

  1368. Firm in

  1369. your faith.

  1370. We defend

  1371. with the

  1372. word,

  1373. we resist

  1374. with the

  1375. will.

  1376. We defend

  1377. with the

  1378. word,

  1379. we resist

  1380. with the

  1381. will,

  1382. being strong

  1383. in the

  1384. Lord and

  1385. the strength

  1386. of his

  1387. might.

  1388. So let

  1389. me just

  1390. finish by

  1391. again suggesting

  1392. to you the

  1393. gist of the

  1394. story here.

  1395. There's a lot

  1396. of different

  1397. intricacies you

  1398. could dive into,

  1399. do that in

  1400. your own time.

  1401. Let me just

  1402. pull back for a

  1403. minute and

  1404. suggest as we

  1405. finish just the

  1406. gist of the

  1407. story here.

  1408. I don't think

  1409. the main point

  1410. here is how

  1411. powerful possessed

  1412. people are,

  1413. or how horrible

  1414. demons can be

  1415. to people,

  1416. or how fast

  1417. demon-possessed

  1418. pigs can run

  1419. down a hill.

  1420. I think the

  1421. point is,

  1422. again,

  1423. how rotten

  1424. we are at

  1425. trusting God,

  1426. but how

  1427. faithful God

  1428. is at

  1429. delivering us.

  1430. And I draw

  1431. this conclusion

  1432. from the way

  1433. that the

  1434. account ends

  1435. with the

  1436. contrast between

  1437. the people of

  1438. the region

  1439. who can't

  1440. wait to get

  1441. rid of Jesus.

  1442. They want

  1443. him to go.

  1444. the contrast

  1445. between them

  1446. and the man

  1447. who's been

  1448. delivered,

  1449. who can't

  1450. help but want

  1451. to be with

  1452. him.

  1453. He wants

  1454. him to

  1455. stay.

  1456. Verse 34

  1457. says that when

  1458. the herdsmen

  1459. saw the pigs

  1460. and what had

  1461. happened,

  1462. they took off

  1463. like a shot

  1464. into the city.

  1465. They started

  1466. to spread the

  1467. word.

  1468. The demon-possessed

  1469. man was

  1470. apparently well-known.

  1471. People had seen

  1472. his behavior.

  1473. They knew of

  1474. his crazy,

  1475. secluded existence

  1476. in the tombs.

  1477. And when they

  1478. arrived back,

  1479. verse 37,

  1480. the people of

  1481. the surrounding

  1482. country,

  1483. they're gripped

  1484. with fear and

  1485. they don't ask

  1486. Jesus to stay.

  1487. They ask him

  1488. to leave.

  1489. And then there

  1490. is a striking

  1491. contrast between

  1492. them,

  1493. verse 38,

  1494. and a delivered

  1495. man who begs

  1496. Jesus to stay

  1497. or to let him

  1498. certainly go with

  1499. him and to be

  1500. with him.

  1501. And Jesus

  1502. says in verse 39,

  1503. No, I want you

  1504. to return to

  1505. your own house

  1506. and tell what

  1507. great things

  1508. God has done

  1509. for you.

  1510. And he went

  1511. his way and

  1512. proclaimed throughout

  1513. the whole city

  1514. what great things

  1515. Jesus had done

  1516. for him.

  1517. We're not given

  1518. interestingly the

  1519. history of this

  1520. guy.

  1521. We don't know

  1522. how he grew up.

  1523. We don't know

  1524. what caused him

  1525. to become demon

  1526. possessed.

  1527. We don't know

  1528. why he's a

  1529. target.

  1530. We don't know

  1531. what it is that

  1532. goes on in his

  1533. background.

  1534. We don't know

  1535. what his

  1536. relationship to

  1537. God was.

  1538. We don't know

  1539. any of that

  1540. about this guy.

  1541. And I find that

  1542. interesting because

  1543. as a kind of

  1544. counselor, I'd like

  1545. to unpick all the

  1546. stuff that maybe I

  1547. think may have led

  1548. to this guy going

  1549. a bit mad and

  1550. just kind of, you

  1551. know, falling into

  1552. this situation that

1553. is so awful for him

  1554. now.

  1555. We're not told any

  1556. of that.

  1557. All we're told is

  1558. his response to

  1559. Jesus.

  1560. That's all we're

  1561. told.

  1562. That as Jesus

  1563. delivers him from

  1564. the demons, he

  1565. wants nothing more

  1566. than Christ.

  1567. And I think that's

  1568. really, when it

  1569. comes to this kind

  1570. of spiritual warfare,

1571. I think that is the

  1572. most significant

  1573. thing.

  1574. Whenever somebody

  1575. calls me into a

  1576. situation where they

  1577. think there's some

  1578. kind of demonic

  1579. activity, the first

  1580. thing I bring with

  1581. me isn't a, you

  1582. know, a smoke

  1583. incense kind of thing

  1584. or holy water or

  1585. anything.

  1586. the first thing I

  1587. bring with me is

  1588. the gospel.

  1589. The gospel.

  1590. Because what I

  1591. understand from the

  1592. Bible is that when

  1593. Jesus comes in, the

  1594. devil goes out.

  1595. When Jesus comes in,

  1596. the devil goes out.

  1597. It doesn't mean that

  1598. we stop being targets

  1599. from an oppressive

  1600. sense, but certainly

  1601. from a possessive sense.

  1602. The gospel is your

  1603. greatest weapon.

  1604. I know how rotten

  1605. it feels to doubt.

  1606. Believe me, I do.

  1607. I know how rotten

  1608. it feels to feel

  1609. weak in faith.

  1610. However, I also know

  1611. how amazing it feels

  1612. to believe.

  1613. Don't you?

  1614. I know how amazing

  1615. it feels to believe,

  1616. to trust, and to

  1617. know that God's

  1618. faithfulness in

  1619. delivering me from

1620. my doubt is one of

  1621. the greatest things

  1622. that he has ever

  1623. done for me.

1624. So that I can go

1625. and you can go now

  1626. and do everything we

  1627. can to help others

  1628. know.

  1629. That's what Jesus

1630. told this guy to do.

1631. Just go back to the

  1632. city and tell them

  1633. all of the wonderful

  1634. things that God has

  1635. done for you.

1636. I want to leave here

  1637. today, and I hope

  1638. you do too, just

  1639. refreshed, reinvigorated

1640. with a vision to go

  1641. and reach this lost

  1642. city for Christ.

  1643. Tell him all the

  1644. wonderful things.

  1645. Not all at once.

  1646. Not all at once.

  1647. It's a little bit

  1648. here, a little bit

  1649. there.

  1650. Don't dump everything

  1651. on your neighbor

  1652. when you get home

  1653. today, but the next

  1654. opportunity that arises,

  1655. just tell people about

  1656. Jesus, all the wonderful

  1657. things that he's done

  1658. for you.

  1659. Let me pray.

  1660. Father, thank you for

  1661. the account that's been

  1662. preserved for us here

1663. that I'm sure has many,

  1664. many, many things to

  1665. teach us.

  1666. But one of the

  1667. greatest things is we're

  1668. brought face to face

  1669. with our own reality

  1670. and weakness,

  1671. propensity to lack

  1672. faith, but also just

  1673. with the great faithfulness

  1674. of God in delivering

  1675. us from our enemy,

  1676. establishing us in Christ.

1677. And Lord, we pray that we

1678. would be like this man

1679. and that we would want to

1680. be with you, but also that

1681. we would want to go where

1682. we have to go to tell

  1683. others about you.

1684. Help us to do that, I

1685. pray, with a fresh sense

1686. of urgency and faith today.

  1687. In Jesus' name, amen.
