  1. Well, please do have a seat.

  2. And it is wonderful to see you this morning,

  3. particularly if this is your first Sunday with us at Brunsfield.

  4. It is just great to have you with us.

  5. Can I encourage you at this point to make every effort to get Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  6. open in front of you?

  7. It is crucial as we come to church at this point in our service

  8. that we have God's Word open in front of us.

  9. So make every effort to get the Scriptures open in front of you.

  10. Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  11. And let's pray together.

  12. And ask for God's help as we come to his Word.

  13. Dear Heavenly Father,

  14. Lord, we still ourselves now,

  15. and we remember who you are and who we are.

  16. We remember that you are God in heaven,

  17. and we are on earth.

  18. And we remember that your ways are so much higher than our ways.

  19. And we remember that in our world of change,

  20. in our lives of change, Lord, that you never change.

  21. And what a joy it is that we can call you,

  22. because of Jesus, our Father.

  23. And we can hear from you as your children.

  24. So, Heavenly Father,

  25. we ask that you would speak to us now through your Word.

  26. Would you help us grasp something more of your amazing goodness,

  27. like we were just singing,

  28. and your greatness.

  29. And may that go from being praised on our lips,

  30. to knowledge in our head,

  31. to truth in our hearts.

  32. And may that just drive a love for you.

  33. Help us to appreciate something more of who you are this morning,

  34. we ask.

  35. In Jesus' name we pray.

  36. Amen.

  37. Well, we've been journeying through Luke's Gospel

  38. over the past few months.

  39. And I want to take you,

  40. at the outset of this sermon this morning,

  41. right back to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  42. If you remember right at the start of his Gospel,

  43. you may want to turn there now,

  44. to chapter 1 and verse 4.

  45. However, we saw Luke declare at the outset of his Gospel

  46. that he'd started out with a very clear purpose in mind.

  47. And he had set out to compile,

  48. and you'll see it there,

  49. an orderly account of Jesus' life.

  50. And what he's done is,

  51. he's carefully researched the facts about Jesus Christ.

  52. And he's gathered those facts together,

  53. and he's put his account together in a way

  54. with the express purpose of providing his readers there

  55. with, and you'll see the word there,

  56. certainty.

  57. This is what he's all about, Luke.

  58. He's trying to provide certainty to his readers.

  59. Now, I find that a massive comfort.

  60. Because I look out in a world,

  61. and I see massive uncertainty.

  62. I see political uncertainty.

  63. I see economic uncertainty.

  64. I look at my life, and I see uncertainty.

  65. And isn't it incredible that Luke writes for certainty?

  66. So here he is.

  67. He's written for certainty.

  68. And because he's done that,

  69. I think it means that we should expect to see

  70. a progressive logic to his Gospel.

  71. And indeed, I think that's exactly what we see.

  72. Here is the flow of Luke's Gospel so far.

  73. If you remember, at the start,

  74. he started by showing us Jesus' CV.

  75. So he started showing us,

  76. this is who Jesus is,

  77. and these are the things that he was doing.

  78. This is who Jesus is.

  79. Then he progressed to tell us about Jesus' manifesto.

  80. This is what Jesus came to do.

  81. Then he proceeded to tell us about the mission of Jesus.

  82. Right at the heart of what Jesus came to do,

  83. we saw it last week, if you remember,

  84. right at the heart of it,

  85. Jesus came to bring salvation.

  86. To save people from their sin,

  87. to rescue them,

  88. to give them life,

  89. and to reconcile them to God.

  90. And as we enter chapter 9 this morning,

  91. what we need to see is that progression,

  92. that flow has led us to a new theme in Luke's Gospel.

  93. Chapter 9, we enter a new section.

  94. And the big question now for Luke

  95. is having shown us what Jesus came to do,

  96. and who Jesus is,

  97. he'll now go on to show us what it means to follow him.

  98. So there's our big theme for this morning.

  99. What it means to follow Jesus.

  100. What does Jesus call his followers to a life of?

  101. And can I suggest straight off the bat,

  102. that is the most important question

  103. that we can ever ask with our lives.

  104. What does it mean to follow Jesus?

  105. You know, one of my pet hates in life,

  106. I don't have many,

  107. but one of my pet hates in life

  108. is when people try to hide the small print from you.

  109. Don't know if you find that,

  110. you get stuff through your inbox,

  111. and it says super fast broadband,

  112. $9.99 a month,

  113. and you think, ka-ching, we're in.

  114. Then you read the small print,

  115. what does it say?

  116. Line rental, £16 a month.

  117. You know what it's like?

  118. You get flyers through your post,

  119. it says three free months at the gym.

  120. Again, you're thinking,

  121. great, I can get my Hasselhoff on.

  122. Then what does it say?

  123. But only when you sign up for 18 months.

  124. We hate it.

  125. I hate it when people try to hide the small print from me.

  126. Here's the thing about Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  127. There's no hiding of the small print.

  128. Jesus is explicit in what it means to follow him.

  129. Small print, Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  130. not small, it's big.

  131. And the disciples in our verses this morning,

  132. they're going to learn two massive lessons

  133. about what Jesus calls them to as they follow him.

  134. This is what a life of following Jesus looks like.

  135. Now, what I want to suggest this morning

  136. is that although we are not the 12,

  137. and although we live in a different time from them,

  138. and although we won't go around doing exactly the things that they did,

  139. nor do I think we should expect to,

  140. actually, at the center of what Jesus calls them to do,

  141. is so true for us today.

  142. A big lesson for this morning

  143. is that the disciples,

  144. these followers and learners of Jesus,

  145. are called by him to a life of going

  146. and a life of knowing.

  147. A life of going

  148. and a life of knowing.

  149. So here it is.

  150. If you've got verses 1 to 9 there,

  151. let's look at what going looks like.

  152. So we meet Jesus at verse 1.

  153. What is he doing?

  154. He's calling a team meeting.

  155. That's what he's doing.

  156. Interesting.

  157. He calls the disciples to come to him

  158. before they can go out.

  159. Now, it's interesting,

  160. because up until this point in Luke's gospel,

  161. Jesus has been the only one

  162. doing the preaching and the healing.

  163. I mean, this really has been a one-man show

  164. up until this point in Luke's gospel.

  165. But now, do you see that Jesus

  166. calls the disciples to him

  167. and to join him in his kingdom work?

  168. He calls them to himself,

  169. he delegates authority to them,

  170. and he sends them out.

  171. This is what's going on.

  172. This is the pattern.

  173. I want us to notice a few things

  174. about what he is commissioning them

  175. to do here.

  176. Now, firstly, notice what they are to do.

  177. Verse 2.

  178. They are to preach,

  179. and they are to heal.

  180. Jesus is calling them to go

  181. and to tell people about the kingdom of God,

  182. to go and make him known

  183. in their surrounding countryside.

  184. Go and make Jesus known.

  185. Secondly, notice where they have to go.

  186. Verse 4.

  187. They have to go to people.

  188. This is a people business

  189. that Jesus is calling them to do.

  190. People right at the heart of this.

  191. They will enter homes.

  192. Where did they go?

  193. Verse 6.

  194. They went from village to village.

  195. How far did they go?

  196. Notice the word at the end of verse 6.

  197. They went everywhere.

  198. This is a going-to-people mission

  199. that Jesus is sending his people on.

  200. Now, presumably, that's why

  201. they are told not to take

  202. the essentials for their journey,

  203. if you think about it.

  204. It does seem a bit odd

  205. when we read it there, doesn't it?

  206. But if you think about it,

  207. it's going to sharpen in their minds

  208. the sense of urgency

  209. that they need to go,

  210. but it's also going to sharpen

  211. in their minds

  212. that they need people.

  213. They need to have people serve them.

  214. They need to seek out people

  215. that are going to help them.

  216. People that are going to let them

  217. stay with them.

  218. People that are going to feed them.

  219. Because if that doesn't happen,

  220. they're not going to get very far.

  221. Third thing to notice,

  222. notice how this will go down.

  223. I think this is where it gets

  224. really applicable for us.

  225. How will this go down?

  226. What does Jesus envisage?

  227. Do you see it there?

  228. That some people will accept them.

  229. Some will accept them

  230. and their message about Jesus

  231. and they'll warmly welcome them.

  232. But, verse 5,

  233. some will reject them

  234. and their message.

  235. I think we've got a great example

  236. of that rejection.

  237. Luke tells us about King Herod

  238. at verse 7.

  239. Seems likely that the mission

  240. of the twelve,

  241. what they are doing,

  242. and clearly the success

  243. of what they are doing,

  244. it reaches the palace.

  245. And Herod is perplexed

  246. and he's confused

  247. about Jesus' identity.

  248. And what's the question

  249. that's on Herod's lips

  250. that Luke records for us there?

  251. Who is this man?

  252. Who is this Jesus?

  253. Who is this Jesus?

  254. It's been the big question

  255. of Luke's gospel so far

  256. as we've looked at

  257. the identity of this man.

  258. Who is this Jesus?

  259. Now that might seem

  260. an innocent question

  261. at this point

  262. on the lips of Herod.

  263. But later on we learn

  264. that it would appear

  265. that he simply wants

  266. to see Jesus perform a sign.

  267. Or at worst,

  268. to have him killed

  269. and he's choosing

  270. to respond negatively

  271. to who Jesus is.

  272. So let's bring a few

  273. of those threads together.

  274. What is Luke telling us?

  275. He's telling us,

  276. or Jesus is telling

  277. his disciples,

  278. that when they go,

  279. when they tell people

  280. about him,

  281. they'll be met with hunger

  282. and they'll be met

  283. with hostility.

  284. Some people will accept

  285. their message

  286. and some people

  287. will reject their message.

  288. And what I want

  289. to suggest to us today

  290. is that as modern day

  291. disciples,

  292. Jesus calls us

  293. to the same pursuit.

  294. You know,

  295. Rico Tyson,

  296. his great little book,

  297. Honest Evangelism,

  298. I suggest you read it.

  299. It's a great little book,

  300. probably the best book

  301. I've read on this kind

  302. of stuff.

  303. He writes this,

  304. God is the great evangelist,

  305. the great seeker

  306. and finder of people.

  307. And he's called his followers

  308. to the same pursuit

  309. and to the same emotion.

  310. So there we go.

  311. There is the gospel task

  312. of the disciples

  313. to go to people

  314. in their community,

  315. to their everyday circles

  316. and to make Jesus known.

  317. And we think about it

  318. in our lives.

  319. We think about our circles.

  320. We think about our communities.

  321. Think about the people

  322. who are in your circles.

  323. Think about your colleagues

  324. at work.

  325. Think about your peers

  326. at university.

  327. Think about your classmates

  328. at school.

  329. Think about your brothers

  330. and sisters.

  331. Think about your mums

  332. and dads.

  333. Think about your uncles

  334. and aunties.

  335. Think about your family.

  336. I mean,

  337. these are our circles,

  338. aren't they?

  339. What is Jesus calling people to,

  340. followers of him?

  341. He's calling them

  342. to embrace a lifestyle

  343. of speaking for him.

  344. I think at this point,

  345. I would say that's why

  346. I find it so massively encouraging

  347. to hear people like Struan

  348. really want to take

  349. their circles,

  350. speaking for Jesus

  351. in their circles,

  352. really seriously.

  353. I want to,

  354. this is what effectively

  355. he was saying,

  356. wasn't it, I think,

  357. that I want to

  358. speak for Jesus

  359. in my sports team.

  360. I want others

  361. to help me speak

  362. for Jesus

  363. in my sports team.

  364. And I want to gather

  365. others together

  366. because I realise

  367. that I can't do it

  368. on my own

  369. and I'm so much more

  370. effective by others

  371. supporting me.

  372. I think that's great.

  373. It's absolutely brilliant.

  374. And it's so encouraging

  375. here to see,

  376. isn't it,

  377. that as people go

  378. and as God moves

  379. by his Holy Spirit

  380. and as the message

  381. is proclaimed,

  382. God moves

  383. and people are saved.

  384. I don't know

  385. if you were aware

  386. at all

  387. that this week,

  388. we've got many students

  389. in this church,

  390. by the way.

  391. I love that we have

  392. such a diverse

  393. church family.

  394. It's brilliant.

  395. But the many students

  396. in this church,

  397. many students

  398. in this church

  399. involved with the

  400. Christian Union

  401. at their university.

  402. And I don't know

  403. if you knew,

  404. but this week

  405. was the Edinburgh

  406. Christian Unions

  407. coming together

  408. and having a

  409. missions week

  410. on campus.

  411. So what they were

  412. trying to do,

  413. they were trying

  414. to come together,

  415. pull resources,

  416. help each other

  417. and go out

  418. and tell their classmates,

  419. their peers,

  420. about Jesus.

  421. Now they called it

  422. something more.

  423. Is there something

  424. more to life?

  425. That was a big idea.

  426. I've been following

  427. it this week

  428. and something really

  429. cool,

  430. they set up a website

  431. and on the website

  432. was just testimonies

  433. of Christian students

  434. about how they came

  435. to know Jesus

  436. as the Lord,

  437. King and Saviour.

  438. It's brilliant.

  439. Let me read to you

  440. two stories

  441. that I found

  442. on this website.

  443. This is Megan.

  444. Megan's a fourth year

  445. student at Napier University

  446. and this is her story

  447. about how she came

  448. to faith.

  449. She said,

  450. I wanted to get

  451. to know Jesus more

  452. so my friend Alice

  453. took me to church

  454. and there I found

  455. all the answers

  456. to my questions.

  457. It brought me

  458. so much joy

  459. to know that Jesus

  460. had wiped my slate clean,

  461. that he had sacrificed

  462. himself and taken

  463. the punishment

  464. for my sin.

  465. This was to me

  466. the most incredible

  467. amount of love

  468. I'd ever heard of.

  469. I hadn't realized

  470. how much God loved me

  471. and I remember

  472. praying to Jesus

  473. one night

  474. and asking him

  475. to save me

  476. because I knew

  477. I simply had

  478. had too much.

  479. It was right at that

  480. second I knew

  481. God had forgiven me

  482. and that God

  483. was truly real.

  484. That's cool,

  485. isn't it?

  486. Hunger

  487. for the gospel

  488. as the gospel goes.

  489. Hunger.

  490. Here's David,

  491. a third year

  492. at Napier University

  493. talking about

  494. what life was like

  495. for him

  496. after he became

  497. a Christian.

  498. It was really hard

  499. and I ended up

  500. sticking out

  501. like a sore thumb

  502. at school.

  503. My friends

  504. constantly teased me

  505. and picked on me.

  506. It was humiliating

  507. and I kept asking myself

  508. have I made a mistake?

  509. I tried to hold on

  510. to Jesus

  511. and to trust in him

  512. knowing deep down

  513. that he was real

  514. and I was encouraged

  515. by friends at church

  516. and I was shown

  517. a verse from the gospel

  518. where Jesus says

  519. to his disciples

  520. you will be hated

  521. by everyone

  522. because of me

  523. but the one

  524. who stands firm

  525. to the end

  526. will be saved

  527. and I knew

  528. I had to keep going.

  529. Hostility.

  530. What will happen

  531. when the gospel

  532. goes to our world

  533. to our friends

  534. to our circles

  535. we will be met

  536. with hunger

  537. and we will be met

  538. with hostility.

  539. You see

  540. it's not our job

  541. to make people

  542. Christians

  543. it's not our job

  544. to make people

  545. respond to the gospel

  546. message

  547. that's the work

  548. of the Holy Spirit

  549. as he works

  550. in the lives

  551. of people

  552. but it is our job

  553. to be obedient

  554. to Jesus

  555. and out of a love

  556. for him

  557. speak of him

  558. and introduce

  559. people to him.

  560. Now just think about it

  561. if you want an illustration

  562. just think of a witness

  563. in a courtroom.

  564. Why are they called

  565. into the court?

  566. Well they're simply called

  567. to present the truth.

  568. Not their fault

  569. if the jury

  570. don't believe them

  571. they are simply called

  572. to speak

  573. the truth.

  574. Same with evangelism.

  575. We haven't failed

  576. in our task

  577. if people don't believe us

  578. but we think

  579. we have failed

  580. in our task

  581. if we simply

  582. don't try.

  583. To follow Jesus

  584. point number one

  585. what does he call

  586. his followers to?

  587. To a life of going.

  588. Now I don't know

  589. about you

  590. but I hear that

  591. and I'm massively

  592. daunted by it

  593. and I'm scared

  594. by it

  595. and I think to myself

  596. that is a big task

  597. and I think to myself

  598. somebody else

  599. nodded me right?

  600. Massive task.

  601. Massive task.

  602. I think about my circles.

  603. I think about my football team.

  604. I think about my family.

  605. I think about my friends.

  606. And I think on a bigger level

  607. I think of our neighbourhood

  608. of Brunsfields.

  609. I look out over here

  610. and I see all those flats

  611. five, six storeys high

  612. filled with people.

  613. Thousands of people

  614. living in this neighbourhood.

  615. And I look out here

  616. and I see maybe

  617. 150 of us or so

  618. and I think we haven't

  619. even scratched the surface

  620. of this area.

  621. And I think of our nation

  622. of Scotland

  623. and I think of the statistics

  624. that would tell me

  625. that two or three percent

  626. of people in this country

  627. would claim the name of Jesus.

  628. That would know him

  629. as their Lord, King and Saviour.

  630. And I think of the size

  631. of the task

  632. and I feel crushed

  633. under the weight.

  634. And I consider the scale

  635. of the task

  636. and I feel sometimes

  637. massively disheartened

  638. especially when I

  639. encounter that hostility.

  640. I bet you the disciples

  641. felt like that at times.

  642. The question for us

  643. as we look at this

  644. as we think about our own lives

  645. as modern day disciples

  646. is how do we keep going?

  647. How do we keep going?

  648. What is it that the disciples

  649. need to know here?

  650. Now Luke has deliberately

  651. put this together

  652. in a certain way.

  653. We've had the mission

  654. of Jesus

  655. and very next

  656. we get the identity

  657. of Jesus.

  658. No coincidence.

  659. What follows next

  660. is a big reminder

  661. for the disciples.

  662. They need to grasp

  663. the identity

  664. of who Jesus really is.

  665. They need to grasp

  666. his incomparable power

  667. and his sufficient

  668. and abundant provision

  669. for them.

  670. And this takes us

  671. to the second thing

  672. that Jesus is calling

  673. his disciples to embrace.

  674. And that's to embrace

  675. a lifestyle

  676. verses 10 to 17.

  677. Embrace a lifestyle

  678. of knowing.

  679. So look at it there

  680. if you've got it there

  681. come back with me

  682. if you've lost me.

  683. Okay.

  684. Verse 10.

  685. The disciples

  686. what are we told there?

  687. They return from their mission.

  688. And they tell Jesus

  689. everything that they

  690. had seen and done.

  691. Everything they've seen

  692. and done.

  693. And you can understand

  694. that they are

  695. absolutely shattered

  696. given everything

  697. that they've done.

  698. They have poured

  699. themselves out.

  700. They have walked around.

  701. They have spoken of him.

  702. They are shattered.

  703. So what does Jesus do?

  704. He takes them away

  705. for a bit of R&R.

  706. You can see it there.

  707. He tries to take them away

  708. but it seems that news

  709. spreads quickly

  710. of Jesus' whereabouts.

  711. And as we've seen

  712. constantly throughout

  713. this gospel

  714. the crowds

  715. find out

  716. and they are really

  717. keen to follow him.

  718. Do you see that?

  719. They go towards him

  720. the crowds.

  721. And notice in passing

  722. and I found this

  723. beautiful this week.

  724. Notice in passing

  725. how Jesus responds

  726. to them.

  727. Now our little girl

  728. Chloe

  729. one of her favourite books

  730. is called

  731. Five Minutes Peace.

  732. Put your hands up

  733. if you've heard of this book

  734. called Five Minutes Peace.

  735. Yep.

  736. What it is

  737. mummy elephant

  738. she's got three little

  739. children elephants

  740. I think that's the term

  741. three little children elephants

  742. and he just won't

  743. give her a minute's peace.

  744. And this book is called

  745. Five Minutes Peace.

  746. I just want five minutes

  747. when you're not

  748. all up in my grill.

  749. Just give me

  750. five minutes peace.

  751. And she never gets

  752. the five minutes peace.

  753. Now if I were Jesus

  754. at this point

  755. I would be playing

  756. the five minutes peace card.

  757. Just crowds

  758. just give me

  759. just give me

  760. a bit of time

  761. with my disciples.

  762. Can we have a bit of time

  763. just to us?

  764. But what does he do?

  765. How does Jesus

  766. respond?

  767. Look at it

  768. second half of verse 11

  769. it's great.

  770. Jesus welcomed them

  771. and he spoke to them

  772. and he healed them.

  773. Now one of the

  774. big themes isn't it

  775. as we've been going

  776. through this Gospel of Luke

  777. one of the big things

  778. that we've seen

  779. is the beauty

  780. of Jesus Christ.

  781. His compassion

  782. his love for people

  783. his grace

  784. that he bestows on people

  785. his patience

  786. his kindness

  787. his tenderness

  788. we see them all here

  789. don't we?

  790. Patient

  791. kind

  792. concerned

  793. caring

  794. gracious

  795. this is the Jesus

  796. that we meet

  797. in the Gospels.

  798. but what happens

  799. the day progresses

  800. and it suddenly dawns

  801. on the disciples

  802. that there could be

  803. a crisis just around

  804. the corner

  805. do you see that?

  806. They're heading

  807. for a crisis

  808. the day is

  809. drawing near

  810. and do you see

  811. that they identify

  812. two potential reasons

  813. for this crisis?

  814. Two massive reasons

  815. firstly because of

  816. where they are

  817. check it out

  818. verse 12

  819. where are they?

  820. They're in a desolate

  821. place

  822. they're out

  823. in the sticks

  824. now what does that mean?

  825. That means that there is

  826. no Tesco Express

  827. at the end of the road

  828. and that means

  829. there is no Starbucks

  830. on the corner

  831. that you could go to

  832. to get your caffeine

  833. hit to take you

  834. through the night

  835. they are

  836. in a desolate

  837. place

  838. that's where they are

  839. first problem

  840. second problem

  841. notice

  842. what they have

  843. they don't have a lot

  844. verse 13

  845. no more than

  846. five loaves

  847. and two fish

  848. how many people

  849. are in front of them?

  850. 5,000 men

  851. 5,000 people

  852. now

  853. picture that

  854. 100 people

  855. in this room

  856. that is

  857. 50 times

  858. this amount

  859. of people

  860. that is a lot

  861. of people

  862. that's a lot

  863. of people

  864. and even

  865. that number

  866. of 5,000

  867. do you notice

  868. that there

  869. may well not

  870. have accounted

  871. for women

  872. and children

  873. as well

  874. big number

  875. of people

  876. given that

  877. number of people

  878. what they have

  879. wouldn't have

  880. even made a dent

  881. in the hunger

  882. of the people

  883. there

  884. so what do they

  885. do

  886. and I love

  887. this little

  888. discourse here

  889. notice it there

  890. what does

  891. the disciples

  892. do

  893. they put the ball

  894. in Jesus'

  895. court

  896. what do they say

  897. what are we

  898. going to do

  899. send them away

  900. Jesus

  901. that's their answer

  902. to the problem

  903. send them away

  904. to get something

  905. to eat

  906. what does

  907. Jesus do

  908. the ball's

  909. in his court

  910. now

  911. he puts it

  912. well and truly

  913. back in theirs

  914. do you notice

  915. that

  916. what does

  917. they say

  918. you

  919. give them

  920. something

  921. to eat

  922. you

  923. in the

  924. Greek

  925. there

  926. it's

  927. emphatic

  928. you

  929. give them

  930. something

  931. to eat

  932. verse 13

  933. I love

  934. how they

  935. suggest

  936. they think

  937. they can

  938. go and

  939. buy food

  940. for all

  941. these

  942. people

  943. can you

  944. imagine

  945. that

  946. they go

  947. to the

  948. local

  949. store

  950. and they

  951. ask

  952. the

  953. guy

  954. behind

  955. the

  956. tail

  957. says

  958. what

  959. are you

  960. after

  961. or after

  962. some

  963. eggs

  964. how many

  965. eggs

  966. are you

  967. after

  968. 5,000

  969. it's a lot

  970. of people

  971. they just

  972. don't know

  973. what to do

  974. we get that

  975. sense

  976. don't we

  977. they just

  978. don't know

  979. what

  980. they are

  981. going to

  982. do

  983. they

  984. they are

  985. well and

  986. truly

  987. out of

  988. ideas

  989. and they

  990. are well

  991. and truly

  992. out of

  993. resources

  994. there's

  995. not a

  996. chance

  997. they can

  998. do

  999. this

  1000. and here's

  1001. where I

  1002. find this

  1003. really

  1004. interesting

  1005. if you

  1006. think about

  1007. it

  1008. presumably

  1009. Jesus

  1010. could have

  1011. just done

  1012. this

  1013. he could

  1014. have just

  1015. done this

  1016. miracle

  1017. couldn't he

  1018. he didn't

  1019. really need

  1020. to have

  1021. this

  1022. conversation

  1023. with the

  1024. disciples

  1025. he could

  1026. have just

  1027. done it

  1028. and everyone

  1029. would have

  1030. been satisfied

  1031. and fed

  1032. but you

  1033. see how

  1034. Jesus

  1035. helps them

  1036. feel

  1037. their utter

  1038. helplessness

  1039. that he

  1040. allows them

  1041. to be in

  1042. that place

  1043. of

  1044. cluelessness

  1045. now why

  1046. is he

  1047. doing that

  1048. well

  1049. surely

  1050. reflecting

  1051. on it

  1052. this

  1053. week

  1054. is it

  1055. not to

  1056. show

  1057. them

  1058. one of

  1059. the

  1060. most

  1061. fundamentally

  1062. simple

  1063. yet profoundly

  1064. beautiful

  1065. truths about

  1066. the Christian

  1067. life

  1068. that we

  1069. need

  1070. Jesus

  1071. we need

  1072. Jesus

  1073. what do

  1074. the disciples

  1075. need to

  1076. learn at

  1077. this point

  1078. surely that

  1079. it's not

  1080. all about

  1081. them

  1082. that they

  1083. need

  1084. Jesus

  1085. and so what

  1086. does he do

  1087. he gets

  1088. them to get

  1089. the crowds

  1090. to sit in

  1091. the 50s

  1092. these groups

  1093. and Jesus

  1094. performs the

  1095. miracle

  1096. it's written

  1097. there isn't

  1098. it

  1099. of course

  1100. he could

  1101. have

  1102. performed

  1103. that

  1104. miracle

  1105. food

  1106. for

  1107. everyone

  1108. and more

  1109. than that

  1110. do you

  1111. notice that

  1112. what does

  1113. Luke tell

  1114. us that

  1115. all the

  1116. people

  1117. ate

  1118. and they

  1119. were

  1120. what

  1121. satisfied

  1122. satisfied

  1123. in fact

  1124. so satisfied

  1125. were they

  1126. do you

  1127. notice that

  1128. there are

  1129. 12 baskets

  1130. left over

  1131. this is

  1132. a big

  1133. feed

  1134. reading the

  1135. Jesus

  1136. storybook

  1137. bible

  1138. with my

  1139. little girl

  1140. the other

  1141. night

  1142. commenting on

  1143. this section

  1144. I love

  1145. this

  1146. it was the

  1147. most natural

  1148. thing in the

  1149. world

  1150. it's what

  1151. God had been

  1152. doing ever

  1153. since the

  1154. beginning of

  1155. course

  1156. taking nothing

  1157. and making

  1158. it everything

  1159. taking emptiness

  1160. and filling

  1161. it up

  1162. here is

  1163. the glory

  1164. of Jesus

  1165. Christ

  1166. and he's

  1167. calling his

  1168. disciples to

  1169. behold it

  1170. lesson for the

  1171. disciples

  1172. they need

  1173. Jesus

  1174. and the

  1175. wonderful truth

  1176. for the

  1177. disciples to

  1178. know

  1179. that they

  1180. need Jesus

  1181. but he

  1182. is willing

  1183. and he

  1184. is able

  1185. to provide

  1186. for all

  1187. their needs

  1188. all their

  1189. needs

  1190. so there

  1191. it is

  1192. the second

  1193. truth for

  1194. the disciples

  1195. to grasp

  1196. that to

  1197. follow Jesus

  1198. is to sign

  1199. up for a

  1200. life of

  1201. going

  1202. and it's

  1203. to sign

  1204. up for a

  1205. life of

  1206. knowing

  1207. and if you

  1208. look carefully

  1209. there the

  1210. information that

  1211. Luke gives

  1212. us you see

  1213. that there's

  1214. actually something

  1215. else going on

  1216. behind the

  1217. scenes as

  1218. well and

  1219. you begin

  1220. to see the

  1221. massive

  1222. exodus imagery

  1223. that Luke

  1224. employs here

  1225. and indeed

  1226. it's not just

  1227. in these verses

  1228. actually it's a

  1229. mega theme that

  1230. runs throughout

  1231. chapter 9

  1232. the exodus story

  1233. God's people in

  1234. the wilderness

  1235. God's people at

  1236. the end of

  1237. themselves in the

  1238. need of food

  1239. God miraculously

  1240. feeds them

  1241. provides food for

  1242. them in the

  1243. wilderness

  1244. lesson for

  1245. that generation

  1246. you need

  1247. God

  1248. and your

  1249. God is

  1250. one who

  1251. can provide

  1252. all your

  1253. needs

  1254. and he will

  1255. lead you

  1256. and he will

  1257. provide for

  1258. you

  1259. you need

  1260. God

  1261. lesson for

  1262. this generation

  1263. surely it's

  1264. the same

  1265. disciples

  1266. you need

  1267. God

  1268. your God

  1269. is willing

  1270. and he's

  1271. able to

  1272. provide all

  1273. of your

  1274. needs

  1275. so keep

  1276. trusting

  1277. and following

  1278. him

  1279. and trust

  1280. him when

  1281. things happen

  1282. that he knows

  1283. where he's

  1284. leading you

  1285. he can provide

  1286. for you

  1287. here are people

  1288. in a desolate

  1289. place

  1290. here are people

  1291. with no idea

  1292. where they will

  1293. find food

  1294. and here is

  1295. God miraculously

  1296. once again

  1297. providing for

  1298. his people

  1299. isn't that just

  1300. a wonderful

  1301. truth for us

  1302. to meditate on

  1303. this morning

  1304. as God's

  1305. people

  1306. that our

  1307. God he will

  1308. never run out

  1309. of resources

  1310. that our

  1311. God will

  1312. never run

  1313. us dry

  1314. that our

  1315. God will

  1316. provide for

  1317. every single

  1318. need of his

  1319. people

  1320. it's a big

  1321. incentive is it

  1322. not for the

  1323. disciples to

  1324. keep going

  1325. if they know

  1326. who this God

  1327. is whose name

  1328. they go on

  1329. behalf of

  1330. what do they

  1331. need to know

  1332. what do we

  1333. need to know

  1334. we need to know

  1335. that when the

  1336. task seems

  1337. big

  1338. our God

  1339. is bigger

  1340. when the

  1341. task seems

  1342. giant

  1343. our God

  1344. is

  1345. gianter

  1346. our God

  1347. is a big

  1348. God

  1349. that is the

  1350. truth here

  1351. our God

  1352. is one who

  1353. provides for

  1354. all of our

  1355. needs

  1356. and I was

  1357. thinking on it

  1358. this week

  1359. how often

  1360. is my view

  1361. of God

  1362. my God

  1363. is too

  1364. small

  1365. he is too

  1366. small

  1367. just need to

  1368. think about

  1369. his greatness

  1370. and I need

  1371. to stop

  1372. trying to

  1373. rate my

  1374. ability to

  1375. navigate my

  1376. way through

  1377. life

  1378. the lesson

  1379. here is to

  1380. look to him

  1381. look to him

  1382. as the all

  1383. sufficient one

  1384. look to him

  1385. as the one

  1386. who is able

  1387. to provide

  1388. everything

  1389. stop projecting

  1390. your human

  1391. limitations on

  1392. God

  1393. stop pretending

  1394. like he is one

  1395. who has

  1396. limited energy

  1397. stop

  1398. looking on him

  1399. who is one

  1400. who has got

  1401. limited resources

  1402. like we do

  1403. I think

  1404. J.I.

  1405. Parker

  1406. he nails

  1407. this one

  1408. in the head

  1409. he says

  1410. we think

  1411. of God

  1412. as being

  1413. too much

  1414. like what

  1415. we are

  1416. let's put

  1417. that mistake

  1418. right

  1419. and let's

  1420. learn to

  1421. acknowledge

  1422. the full

  1423. majesty

  1424. of our

  1425. incomparable

  1426. God and

  1427. saviour

  1428. we need to

  1429. have a big

  1430. view of

  1431. Jesus

  1432. that's what

  1433. this is

  1434. telling us

  1435. we need to

  1436. have a big

  1437. view of who

  1438. he is

  1439. the mission

  1440. is big

  1441. but our

  1442. God is

  1443. big

  1444. I think

  1445. that's a

  1446. great place

  1447. for us

  1448. to finish

  1449. for this

  1450. morning

  1451. as we

  1452. think about

  1453. the greatness

  1454. of our

  1455. gods

  1456. what do the

  1457. disciples need

  1458. to know

  1459. that as they

  1460. go in the

  1461. name of their

  1462. saviour

  1463. they need to

  1464. know the

  1465. incomparable

  1466. power and

  1467. provision of

  1468. their saviour

  1469. what does

  1470. it mean to

  1471. follow Jesus

  1472. what does he

  1473. call his

  1474. disciples to

  1475. what does he

  1476. call his

  1477. followers to

  1478. well here it

  1479. is at the

  1480. beginning of

  1481. chapter 9

  1482. two aspects

  1483. of it

  1484. to follow him

  1485. is to sign

  1486. up to a

  1487. life of

  1488. going

  1489. and to

  1490. follow him

  1491. is to sign

  1492. up to a

  1493. life of

  1494. knowing

  1495. now we're

  1496. going to

  1497. one of the

  1498. songs that

  1499. we're going

  1500. to finish

  1501. with is

  1502. guide me

  1503. oh thou

  1504. great

  1505. jehovah

  1506. let me

  1507. just read

  1508. this verse

  1509. to you as

  1510. we finish

  1511. I think it

  1512. just picks up

  1513. on a lot

  1514. of the themes

  1515. that we've

  1516. been looking

  1517. at this

  1518. morning

  1519. guide me

  1520. oh thou

  1521. great

  1522. jehovah

  1523. pilgrim

  1524. through this

  1525. barren land

  1526. I am weak

  1527. but you

  1528. are mighty

  1529. hold me

  1530. with thy

  1531. powerful hand

  1532. bread of

  1533. heaven

  1534. bread of

  1535. heaven

  1536. feed me

  1537. till I

  1538. want no

  1539. more

  1540. feed me

  1541. till I

  1542. want no

  1543. more

  1544. let's pray

  1545. together

  1546. oh dear

  1547. father we

  1548. ask that you

  1549. would help

  1550. us this

  1551. week

  1552. we ask

  1553. that you

  1554. help us

  1555. this week

  1556. to be in

  1557. tune with

  1558. your

  1559. incomparable

  1560. greatness

  1561. would you

  1562. help us

  1563. to be

  1564. those

  1565. people

  1566. who

  1567. follow

  1568. you

  1569. and who

  1570. live

  1571. not by

  1572. sight

  1573. but who

  1574. live by

  1575. faith

  1576. and we

  1577. do so

  1578. because we

  1579. know that

  1580. you are

  1581. the gods

  1582. who is

  1583. able to

  1584. provide for

  1585. all of

  1586. our needs

  1587. and I

  1588. ask dear

  1589. father that

  1590. in our

  1591. own times

  1592. this week

  1593. of reading

  1594. your words

  1595. would you

  1596. feed us

  1597. up

  1598. would you

  1599. build us

  1600. up

  1601. would you

  1602. strengthen

  1603. us

  1604. and would

  1605. you send

  1606. us to

  1607. a lost

  1608. world

  1609. to proclaim

  1610. the greatness

  1611. of your

  1612. son Jesus

  1613. Christ

  1614. and so we

  1615. thank you for

  1616. our time this

  1617. morning

  1618. and we pray

  1619. you'll be with us

  1620. now in the rest

  1621. of our service

  1622. in Jesus name

  1623. Amen
