  1. Well, thank you so much, Peter, and to the guys in the band for leading us thus far.

  2. Are we well? Yes, good. Well, can I encourage you to turn to the little book of Titus?

  3. A little trick for you if you're struggling to find it, this New Testament letter is the last of the five consecutive T's in the New Testament.

  4. One Tim, two Tim, one Thess, two Thess, one Tim, two Tim, and then our little friend Titus at the end there.

  5. That's for free. It's not even in my notes. But there you go. That's how I remember these little things.

  6. And Titus is where we'll be for the next little while.

  7. This little book that I hope at the end of our few weeks in this letter will become not only just a friend and an acquaintance,

  8. but actually will become a good companion as we continue to travel on as a church community.

  9. So would you turn to Titus and let's pray and let's ask that God would be so gracious to us this evening as we come to his word.

  10. Let's pray together.

  11. Oh, dear Father, we're so aware, Lord, as we come here this evening that our view of you, our grasp of you is so small.

  12. Our view of your son is so small.

  13. Our view of your spirit is so small.

  14. And so, dear Father, it's simply our prayer as we come to your word this evening, as we gather as your people together,

  15. that you would, by your spirit, as your word is preached this evening,

  16. would you make yourself big in our sight?

  17. So, Father, would we leave this place this evening just with a greater understanding, appreciation and affection for who you are?

  18. And so that is our prayer, Lord, that you be so gracious and kind to us.

  19. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  20. Well, I thought we'd begin just by a little bit of fun.

  21. I'm always up for fun.

  22. I thought we'd begin by a bit of fun.

  23. Let's see how many different countries are represented here tonight.

  24. There is a point to this.

  25. You'll see.

  26. Just shout them out.

  27. How many different countries have we got represented here tonight?

  28. Italy?

  29. Britain?

  30. Scotland?

  31. Okay.

  32. Anyone else?

  33. Northern Ireland?

  34. Germany?

  35. Here's a question for you.

  36. Simona and Luca.

  37. How do people perceive Italians?

  38. What do they say about Italians?

  39. Pizza.

  40. Okay.

  41. Germans?

  42. Okay.

  43. I would think of hardworking.

  44. I would think of.

  45. What do you think?

  46. Put your hands up if you're Scottish.

  47. How do you think people perceive us?

  48. Okay.

  49. Hold that thought.

  50. It was a rhetorical question.

  51. Should have made it clearer.

  52. Hold that thought.

  53. How do you think people perceive Scottish people?

  54. I was reading an article this week by a team at Cambridge University who did some research

  55. about the different reputations that people, different people groups in Britain have.

  56. Okay.

  57. So I'm doing a bit of research into this.

  58. This is what the research said.

  59. Cambridge University.

  60. Our survey found that Londoners were regarded as being uncooperative, quarrelsome and irritable.

  61. People in the east of England were found to be the most conscientious but were more likely

  62. to be set in their ways.

  63. The Welsh tend to be more open.

  64. But our survey found that they were the shyest and they were the least emotionally stable.

  65. The Scots have long enjoyed a reputation for being grumpy, aloof and doer.

  66. There's a good Scottish word for you, doer.

  67. But our new study suggests that they are actually the most friendly people in Britain.

  68. Can I get an amen?

  69. Amen.

  70. This is what people, I don't know if that's true or not, but this is apparently how we're

  71. perceived by the outside world.

  72. There's Scottish people on the Royal Mile.

  73. Look at them.

  74. Beautiful.

  75. Beautiful.

  76. Here's what I want you to do this evening.

  77. I want us to do this evening.

  78. I want to take us from thinking about the people of our island and how they are perceived.

  79. And I want us to travel back to the first century and introduce you to a people from

  80. another island.

  81. So we're going back this evening to the island of Crete.

  82. This letter of Titus written by Paul to Titus, to a man and to a church who are living on

  83. this island of Crete.

  84. This large island just off the coast of Greece.

  85. And let me introduce you to some of the locals on this island.

  86. Name for the locals?

  87. Cretans.

  88. Reputation of the locals?

  89. Well, these people are infamous for their lack of ethics, for their lying, and for their

  90. absolute greed.

  91. In fact, one of the Greek words for being a liar, the word kretizo, literally to be a

  92. cretin.

  93. Now, just to give you a flavour of the distaste for this people, let me read to you, this

  94. is what I found in my research this week, a few of the sayings about these people that

  95. outsiders looking in had about them.

  96. This is Plutarch, the Greek biographer.

  97. He always joked about the fact that on Crete, there were no wild animals with four legs, but

  98. that was more than made up for the fact that there were tons of wild animals with two legs

  99. living on the island.

  100. Pauli Bias, the Greek historian, made the following comments about the Cretans.

  101. He said,

  102. So we have that today in our culture, don't we?

  103. We hate money cheats.

  104. We hate money cheats.

  105. We think about in the world of sports, when somebody signs for another team because they

  106. got offered more money.

  107. We hate them, don't we?

  108. But in this culture, Cretans, that kind of behaviour is lauded.

  109. It's praised.

  110. Everybody wants to reach the top, accumulate more stuff.

  111. This is the people who are on this island.

  112. And here's the wonderful news for us to comprehend this evening from this letter, is that the gospel

  113. has reached Crete.

  114. And it hasn't just reached Crete, it has taken root in Crete.

  115. And God, through his gospel, has birthed a church on this island.

  116. Now, if we were ranking people in terms of who was likely and least likely to become Christians,

  117. where the gospel was going to have impact and not have impact,

  118. this island would be very low on our rankings.

  119. Now, isn't that not a wonderful lesson for us straight off the bat?

  120. As we think about our nation, as we think about our city, as we think even just about our area,

  121. what do we so often think?

  122. That this is hard soil.

  123. But is this not encouraging?

  124. This is what encouraged me this week.

  125. That this tells us that the gospel is unstoppable.

  126. That the gospel is powerful.

  127. And it can break the hardest of soils.

  128. And it can melt even the hardest of hearts.

  129. And God's word, as it goes forth,

  130. it will accomplish the purposes that he intends for it.

  131. That is encouraging.

  132. Now, let me just tell you that the two main parties to this letter,

  133. Paul and Titus,

  134. the apostle and his co-worker,

  135. traveling companion and protégé.

  136. Now, whenever it is exactly that they were on Crete,

  137. whether it was during the events recorded in the book of Acts,

  138. whether it was after those events,

  139. whatever conclusion you come to,

  140. the gospel has taken root on Crete.

  141. And through this message being preached,

  142. God has saved men and women to himself.

  143. He has lifted them out of the darkness

  144. and he's put them into his glorious kingdom of light.

  145. And he's created this community of Christians on this island of Crete.

  146. Now, you can imagine that these Christians are gathering in each other's homes to worship

  147. and to fellowship with one another and to encourage one another.

  148. These are most likely house church gatherings that are on this island.

  149. And I think we can probably assume from the letter

  150. that this is a young church.

  151. It's a really young church.

  152. In fact, some commentators would place this church as not even being a year old.

  153. These are new Christians.

  154. This is an inexperienced church.

  155. This is a church who are trying to find their feet.

  156. Just picture what that is like.

  157. I remember a little girl when she was learning to walk last year.

  158. It was an absolute joy to watch her do it, but it was messy.

  159. She would go for it and she would kind of stumble

  160. and she would bang her head and she's trying to work out limbs.

  161. Do you know, she's just trying to work this thing out.

  162. It's kind of like that when we first become Christians.

  163. Isn't it?

  164. We're trying to figure this thing out.

  165. How the gospel has flipped our lives upside down.

  166. Trying to work out, I mean, what is it about our old lives

  167. that Jesus calls us to leave behind in pursuit of him?

  168. My old lifestyles.

  169. My old habits.

  170. My old ambitions.

  171. What is it that he calls me to say no to in order to follow him?

  172. We're trying to work out the contours of the Christian life.

  173. That I see the world differently now.

  174. I see it through the God lens.

  175. I'm trying to discern what is false and what is true in this life.

  176. Trying to grapple with what it means to live as part of this new family of God,

  177. the church that God has grafted me into.

  178. All of a sudden, before, I've got nothing in common with these people.

  179. Now, all of a sudden, I've got the most important thing in my life in common with these people.

  180. Just trying to figure it out.

  181. So the challenge is that these new Christians are probably facing on this island.

  182. So we can begin to appreciate, can't we, the pressures that this church are facing.

  183. Pressures that they're facing.

  184. I think two main sources of pressures.

  185. Firstly, internal pressures.

  186. Now, imagine it.

  187. Just picture it.

  188. You're in that home group setting.

  189. And you look at one another across the room.

  190. You think, well, what do we do now?

  191. What do we do now?

  192. What do we stand for?

  193. How do we behave as a community?

  194. How do we work together?

  195. How do we help one another?

  196. And into the mix, I think you've got false teachers in this letter.

  197. We learn a lot about them who are trying to infiltrate this church.

  198. Who are trying to spin lies.

  199. Who are trying to cause these Christians to deviate their course from following the Lord Jesus Christ.

  200. And I think particularly in this letter, if you've got it there, chapter 1 and verse 10.

  201. There's a Jewish flavor to this false teaching.

  202. What are they telling you?

  203. Well, I know Paul said this.

  204. I know he said that.

  205. But you know, crazy Uncle Paul, it's a bit more like this.

  206. Did he tell you not to do that?

  207. No, you kind of need to do that.

  208. He said you can do that.

  209. No, you definitely can't do that.

  210. So you begin to see, can't you, these internal pressures that are facing these new Christians.

  211. Internal pressures, and I can certainly picture external pressures as well in this island.

  212. Can't imagine that's an easy place to live for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  213. Just imagine it.

  214. One day you're living just like everyone else on that island.

  215. You're living for the same things.

  216. You're chasing the same dreams.

  217. You're acting exactly the same as everybody else.

  218. And then you hear that the gospel and that the Spirit awakens you.

  219. All of a sudden that you're alive.

  220. Why?

  221. You see life differently now.

  222. God has transferred you from the kingdom of darkness,

  223. and he's placed you into his kingdom of light.

  224. You were dead, and by his grace, he has made you alive.

  225. And he's called you to live differently.

  226. So don't be a cheat.

  227. Be honest.

  228. Don't lie.

  229. Speak the truth.

  230. Don't be lazy.

  231. Work hard.

  232. And so you can imagine if you live out your transformed life,

  233. in this culture with these people,

  234. you're going to stand out a mile.

  235. You're going to stand out a mile.

  236. I mean, check Holy Harry over there.

  237. Can you believe that he shares his money and his stuff

  238. with these new friends of his?

  239. Can you believe that?

  240. We're off.

  241. We'll spend our money on ourselves.

  242. Thank you very much.

  243. I mean, check Jesus freak Jenny over there as well.

  244. Can you believe that when the boss leaves work,

  245. she still works?

  246. She doesn't slack like everybody else?

  247. We're away as well.

  248. Internal pressures, external pressures facing this church.

  249. And you begin to see,

  250. even just at the outset of this letter,

  251. how applicable this is for us.

  252. Actually, we face pressures, don't we,

  253. every day as we live our lives as Christians in this world?

  254. Well, I think this letter has got so much to teach us.

  255. So much to teach us.

  256. We face the same kind of pressures.

  257. And I think that takes us to the purpose of this letter.

  258. Or to put it another way,

  259. addressing the why question.

  260. So it was a great question to ask ourselves

  261. when we're trying to grapple with the meaning of a text,

  262. the why question.

  263. Why?

  264. And this is the thing here.

  265. Why is Paul writing these things to this man

  266. at this particular time?

  267. Well, here is Paul.

  268. We're going to get to the bottom of this question.

  269. Here is Paul.

  270. And for one reason or another,

  271. he's no longer on Crete.

  272. He's no longer on Crete.

  273. And he's writing this letter to Titus,

  274. whom he has instructed to remain on Crete.

  275. And to do what while he's remaining on Crete?

  276. Well, if you check it out there,

  277. chapter 1 and verse 5.

  278. Paul instructs Titus to put in order

  279. what was left unfinished.

  280. Do you see that?

  281. So he's saying that there's still work to be done on Crete.

  282. And Paul instructs Titus in this letter

  283. to finish the work.

  284. Finish the work by standing for the truth.

  285. And by silencing those who would speak against the truth.

  286. And by modelling for the people

  287. what a godly life looks like.

  288. And by appointing leaders who will lead this church well.

  289. That's what he's got to do.

  290. That's what Titus has got to do.

  291. But I think, just I've been convinced

  292. the more that I've got to get under the skin of this letter,

  293. that actually there's a bigger purpose

  294. that Paul has in mind.

  295. More holistic purpose.

  296. What does Paul want to see happen

  297. in this young church?

  298. Well, he wants Titus to give himself to the task

  299. of seeing this church grow.

  300. Grow.

  301. He wants it to grow well.

  302. He wants it to grow up.

  303. He wants it to grow deep.

  304. And he wants it to grow out.

  305. Paul wants this young church to grow.

  306. I think there's two particular aspects to this growing.

  307. And just as we look at a brief introduction to this letter,

  308. let me just outline what I think are the two big aspects

  309. of growing that Paul outlines in this letter.

  310. So he wants them to be growing.

  311. And he wants them to be growing

  312. in their knowing.

  313. And he wants them to be growing in their showing.

  314. Growing in their knowing

  315. and growing in their showing.

  316. Knowing what it is they believe.

  317. And showing how what they believe

  318. makes a radical difference

  319. to the way that they live their lives.

  320. Individually and as a community.

  321. He wants them to be growing

  322. in their knowing and their showing.

  323. And I think he sums it up in that phrase

  324. that we get right at the beginning of verse 1.

  325. And I think this is the big idea of this letter

  326. and Paul's beating heart for this church.

  327. What does he write?

  328. Their knowledge of the truth

  329. that leads to godliness.

  330. Their knowledge of the truth

  331. that leads to godliness.

  332. He wants them to grow.

  333. And in terms of their knowing,

  334. how does he want them to grow?

  335. Well, here's three quick words for you.

  336. Just as we introduce ourselves,

  337. familiarize ourselves with this letter.

  338. He wants them to grow,

  339. first of all,

  340. in their delighting.

  341. Now, I don't know if you

  342. read the BBC website often.

  343. I was on there on Friday morning.

  344. And I don't know if you saw

  345. the story about the elderly couple,

  346. Joan and Ken,

  347. who were getting married down in Gloucester.

  348. Did anyone see that?

  349. You saw that?

  350. Brilliant.

  351. So I'm not making a...

  352. Amazing story about how this couple met.

  353. Ken,

  354. homeless,

  355. smelly clothes,

  356. unemployed,

  357. raking his way through bins

  358. to get meals for the day.

  359. Nothing attractive about him.

  360. Joan sees him,

  361. has compassion on him,

  362. befriends him,

  363. cares for him,

  364. tends for him,

  365. loves him.

  366. 20 years later,

  367. they're due to get married.

  368. I'm reading that thinking,

  369. that's pretty cool.

  370. But I'm reading it

  371. and I'm thinking,

  372. what a beautiful example,

  373. picture of the Gospel.

  374. What a beautiful picture

  375. of the Gospel.

  376. And this is what Paul outlines

  377. for Titus

  378. at Titus chapter 3.

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  379. We've got it there,

  380. look at it there.

  381. What does he write?

  382. He wants to look at Titus' head

  383. around the beauty

  384. of the Gospel.

  385. That God saved us, Titus.

  386. He saved us.

  387. Not because of the righteous things

  388. that we did,

  389. not because we looked good

  390. in his sight,

  391. not because we were living

  392. good lives.

  393. On the contrary,

  394. we were ugly.

  395. But he saved us,

  396. not because of the things

  397. done by us,

  398. but he saved us

  399. because of his mercy

  400. and his love

  401. and his incredible grace.

  402. And he put his spirit in us.

  403. And he adopted us

  404. as his sons and his daughters.

  405. So that we are no longer orphans.

  406. We are adopted

  407. and we are co-heirs

  408. with Christ.

  409. And we have the hope

  410. of eternal life

  411. where one day

  412. we,

  413. as part of the church,

  414. will meet our husband,

  415. Jesus Christ.

  416. That's what he says.

  417. Titus,

  418. you've got to delight

  419. in that message.

  420. The Gospel really is

  421. the ultimate

  422. rags-to-riches story.

  423. Now,

  424. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  425. famous Welsh preacher,

  426. he used to say

  427. that the only thing

  428. that humiliated him

  429. to the dust

  430. and caused him

  431. to fall on his knees

  432. in worship

  433. was when he contemplated

  434. the cross of Jesus Christ.

  435. Nothing else

  436. will humble us

  437. apart from that,

  438. that we were not worthy.

  439. But nothing else

  440. will cause our spirits

  441. to delight

  442. in the fact that God

  443. outrageously loved us

  444. in Christ

  445. and he forgave us,

  446. not cheaply,

  447. costly.

  448. And that we are adopted

  449. as his children.

  450. And that we have

  451. a glorious future

  452. ahead of us.

  453. And Paul writes

  454. to this community

  455. and says,

  456. you have to be a community

  457. who delight in that message.

  458. That you don't just

  459. know that message,

  460. but you know that message

  461. and you love that message.

  462. It's a great point

  463. to stop

  464. and to ask ourselves

  465. individually

  466. and corporately,

  467. friends,

  468. do we delight

  469. in that message?

  470. Do we delight

  471. in the gospel?

  472. Would people

  473. looking into

  474. this church community,

  475. would people

  476. looking into our lives,

  477. would they say

  478. that we delight

  479. in the gospel?

  480. And what are we

  481. going to do,

  482. really practically,

  483. what are we going

  484. to do this week

  485. to cultivate

  486. that delight

  487. in the gospel?

  488. Paul wants them

  489. to grow

  490. in their delighting

  491. and Paul wants them

  492. to grow secondly

  493. in their discerning.

  494. as you grow

  495. in your understanding

  496. of the gospel,

  497. this is what he's saying

  498. to this community,

  499. you've got to see

  500. that it's too good

  501. to be tampered with.

  502. Too good to be tampered with.

  503. You've got to know it well

  504. so that you can discern

  505. when others are seeking

  506. to distort it

  507. and twist it

  508. and rob it

  509. of both its beauty

  510. and its power.

  511. And you've got to be able

  512. to discern

  513. what a life of godliness

  514. looks like.

  515. Look at verse 11

  516. of chapter 2

  517. if you've got it there.

  518. What will the grace

  519. of God do

  520. in their lives

  521. as God transforms

  522. them by his spirit?

  523. What will it do?

  524. It will teach them

  525. to say

  526. no.

  527. Now not in our little girl

  528. at the minute

  529. she loves the word no,

  530. she's two terrible twos,

  531. no, no, no, no, no

  532. to everything.

  533. It's not that kind of no.

  534. It's a no

  535. that is choosing

  536. to say no

  537. to self

  538. and to sin

  539. and to say yes

  540. to the things

  541. of Jesus Christ.

  542. They've got to discern

  543. what a life

  544. of worship

  545. to him

  546. looks like.

  547. What will they say no to?

  548. Look what it says,

  549. to ungodliness

  550. and worldly passions.

  551. So the things

  552. of their former

  553. way of life,

  554. the things not pleasing

  555. to God,

  556. not honouring to him,

  557. not worthy of him

  558. and not fitting

  559. for their new life

  560. and their status.

  561. And how are they

  562. going to grow

  563. in their discerning?

  564. Well they'll grow

  565. in their discerning

  566. by learning.

  567. Grow in their discerning

  568. by learning.

  569. Learning what?

  570. Learning the truth.

  571. In my university summers

  572. I worked a couple

  573. of summers

  574. at one of the banks,

  575. one in the city centre

  576. in Glasgow,

  577. one in the city centre

  578. in Aberdeen.

  579. And he used to train you

  580. as to how to spot

  581. a fake note.

  582. The only way

  583. to spot a fake note,

  584. the best way

  585. to spot a fake note

  586. is to be so in touch

  587. with the real note.

  588. Just get the feel

  589. of the real note,

  590. you'll be able

  591. to feel a fake note.

  592. It's kind of the same

  593. here, isn't it?

  594. How are we to grow

  595. in discerning?

  596. How are we to grow

  597. in separating

  598. the false

  599. from the true

  600. by being so in touch

  601. with the truth?

  602. So in touch

  603. with the truth

  604. that we know

  605. our Bibles,

  606. that we come

  607. before God

  608. and say,

  609. God,

  610. would you teach us

  611. the truth?

  612. Get familiar

  613. with the touch

  614. of the truth.

  615. Theologian

  616. J.I. Packer

  617. puts it like this,

  618. if I were the devil,

  619. one of my first aims

  620. would be

  621. to stop Christians

  622. from digging

  623. into their Bibles.

  624. Paul wants

  625. this church

  626. to grow

  627. in their discerning.

  628. And lastly,

  629. in terms of their

  630. knowing,

  631. he wants them

  632. to grow

  633. in terms

  634. of their

  635. discipling.

  636. That yes,

  637. they are individual

  638. sheep,

  639. but they are not

  640. to live as individual

  641. sheep.

  642. They are to live

  643. as part of a flock.

  644. And not just

  645. a flock,

  646. but live as part

  647. of a family.

  648. And they are to

  649. help each other

  650. to grow

  651. in godliness.

  652. And you'll see

  653. a beautiful picture

  654. of this

  655. chapter 2.

  656. A beautiful picture

  657. of what he wants

  658. the community

  659. life of this church

  660. to look like.

  661. And it's brilliant.

  662. Look at it here.

  663. What does he say?

  664. Older women

  665. seasoned saints

  666. teach the younger

  667. women.

  668. Older men,

  669. you seasoned saints,

  670. you teach the younger

  671. men.

  672. And this isn't

  673. sit around

  674. the family

  675. dinner table

  676. and play a monopoly

  677. and play in happy

  678. families.

  679. What this is,

  680. is Paul desiring

  681. a compelling

  682. community.

  683. A community

  684. that cares

  685. for one another.

  686. A community

  687. that loves

  688. one another.

  689. A community

  690. that takes seriously

  691. looking out

  692. for one another.

  693. And a community

  694. that passes

  695. stuff on.

  696. Passes stuff on.

  697. Speaks the word

  698. to one another.

  699. Experiences,

  700. knowledge,

  701. understanding,

  702. awareness,

  703. advice,

  704. helping one another

  705. to grow in the

  706. faith.

  707. Isn't that a

  708. wonderful picture

  709. of what meaningful

  710. and intentional

  711. discipleship looks

  712. like?

  713. Corporately.

  714. It's brilliant,

  715. isn't it?

  716. It's brilliant.

  717. And just as we're

  718. passing,

  719. let me ask you,

  720. as we're at this

  721. point,

  722. just think about

  723. your own life

  724. for a minute.

  725. Who's speaking

  726. into your life?

  727. In the church

  728. context,

  729. who's speaking

  730. into your life?

  731. Maybe you want

  732. to pray this

  733. week that God

  734. would put

  735. somebody in

  736. your heart

  737. that you

  738. could speak

  739. into their

  740. life.

  741. Whose life

  742. are you

  743. speaking into?

  744. Is there

  745. someone in

  746. this church

  747. family who

  748. could play

  749. that role

  750. in your

  751. life?

  752. Paul wants

  753. this Christian

  754. community to

  755. grow in their

  756. knowing,

  757. in their

  758. delighting,

  759. in their

  760. discerning,

  761. in their

  762. discipling,

  763. and he

  764. wants them

  765. to grow

  766. as well

  767. in their

  768. showing.

  769. So firstly,

  770. look at this,

  771. he wants them

  772. to grow

  773. in their

  774. witnessing.

  775. You've got it

  776. there again,

  777. chapter 2,

  778. verse 9,

  779. Paul addressing

  780. those in the

  781. church who

  782. would be

  783. slaves,

  784. that is,

  785. servants

  786. underneath a

  787. master.

  788. And what

  789. does he

  790. say?

  791. He says

  792. that he

  793. wants them

  794. to live

  795. their lives

  796. in such

  797. a way

  798. that you

  799. make the

  800. gospel

  801. attractive.

  802. So you

  803. live your

  804. lives in

  805. such a way

  806. that you

  807. make it

  808. look good.

  809. You've got

  810. an ESV

  811. there,

  812. it says

  813. he wants

  814. them to

  815. adorn the

  816. gospel.

  817. That's a

  818. great word,

  819. adorn.

  820. And he's

  821. talking much

  822. less about

  823. wearing clothes.

  824. This is not

  825. about Christian

  826. Dior.

  827. This is about

  828. displaying Christian

  829. character.

  830. This is what

  831. he's saying,

  832. you've got to

  833. make the

  834. gospel look

  835. good.

  836. In fact,

  837. character is

  838. what Paul tells

  839. Titus in this

  840. letter to

  841. look for

  842. when appointing

  843. leaders for

  844. this church,

  845. appointing

  846. elders.

  847. That they

  848. are men

  849. of good

  850. and of

  851. growing and

  852. of genuine

  853. and of

  854. godly

  855. character.

  856. That their

  857. insides are

  858. the same as

  859. their outsides.

  860. That they're

  861. the same in

  862. private as

  863. they are in

  864. public.

  865. That's what

  866. he wants

  867. for the

  868. elders of

  869. the church.

  870. But he

  871. also wants

  872. it for

  873. the whole

  874. church.

  875. That people

  876. would look

  877. at them

  878. and as

  879. they adorn

  880. the gospel,

  881. as people

  882. look at

  883. them from

  884. the outside,

  885. they would

  886. question and

  887. think,

  888. why is it

  889. that they

  890. look so

  891. good?

  892. Why is it

  893. that they

  894. look so

  895. good?

  896. Why do

  897. they act

  898. differently?

  899. And not

  900. with a big

  901. question mark

  902. above them,

  903. asking it

  904. because I

  905. want that

  906. for my

  907. life as

  908. well.

  909. What is

  910. it about

  911. their life

  912. that I

  913. don't have?

  914. Paul wants

  915. them to grow

  916. in their

  917. witnessing.

  918. Secondly,

  919. he wants

  920. them to grow

  921. in their

  922. working.

  923. big emphasis

  924. in this

  925. letter on

  926. God's

  927. people living

  928. productive

  929. and living

  930. fruitful

  931. lives for

  932. the glory

  933. of God.

  934. Maybe note

  935. them down

  936. and check

  937. them out

  938. later.

  939. Chapter

  940. 2,

  941. verse 14.

  942. Chapter

  943. 3,

  944. verse 8.

  945. Chapter

  946. 3,

  947. verse 14.

  948. Work

  949. hard.

  950. People,

  951. commit

  952. yourselves.

  953. Be zealous

  954. for good

  955. works.

  956. And in

  957. this letter

  958. he criticizes

  959. the false

  960. teachers.

  961. Chapter

  962. 1,

  963. verse 16.

  964. For not

  965. living

  966. productive

  967. and fruitful

  968. lives.

  969. In fact,

  970. their lives

  971. are inconsistent.

  972. They are

  973. claiming one

  974. thing with

  975. their mouths

  976. and they're

  977. displaying another

  978. with their

  979. actions and

  980. character.

  981. There's an

  982. inconsistency to

  983. the false

  984. teachers and

  985. that's how

  986. you'll be

  987. able to

  988. spot them.

  989. Grow in

  990. your working.

  991. And thirdly,

  992. and lastly,

  993. and very

  994. much linked

  995. to the

  996. first two,

  997. Paul wants

  998. them to

  999. grow in

  1000. their

  1001. waiting.

  1002. Waiting

  1003. for the

  1004. return of

  1005. their

  1006. glorious

  1007. Lord and

  1008. Saviour

  1009. Jesus

  1010. Christ.

  1011. Chapter

  1012. 2,

  1013. verse 30.

  1014. He wants

  1015. them to

  1016. live in

  1017. eager

  1018. anticipation

  1019. of the

  1020. day when

  1021. their

  1022. master will

  1023. come back.

  1024. And this

  1025. isn't a

  1026. passive

  1027. waiting.

  1028. This is

  1029. very much

  1030. an active

  1031. thing.

  1032. He wants

  1033. them to

  1034. wait well.

  1035. And his

  1036. servants in

  1037. the present

  1038. age, what

  1039. are they to

  1040. do?

  1041. Well, they're

  1042. to work for

  1043. him, they're

  1044. to live for

  1045. him, they're

  1046. to pursue

  1047. more of

  1048. him, and

  1049. they're just

  1050. to love

  1051. him outrageously.

  1052. Now, I must

  1053. say this week

  1054. in my own

  1055. life, my own

  1056. heart, I think

  1057. this is where

  1058. I was most

  1059. massively

  1060. convicted.

  1061. That how

  1062. often the

  1063. return of my

  1064. Lord and

  1065. that glorious

  1066. day when he

  1067. will return,

  1068. like we were

  1069. singing in that

  1070. first song,

  1071. how often does

  1072. that just never

  1073. cross my

  1074. radar?

  1075. It never

  1076. comes into my

  1077. thought life,

  1078. and oh

  1079. Father, would

  1080. you forgive me

  1081. that that is

  1082. true?

  1083. And would

  1084. you help me

  1085. live an eager

  1086. expectation of

  1087. the day that

  1088. you will

  1089. return to

  1090. make all

  1091. things new?

  1092. How often I

  1093. just get bogged

  1094. down with the

  1095. stuff down

  1096. here?

  1097. Did I plan my

  1098. diary two years

  1099. in advance?

  1100. What a vanity

  1101. that the Lord

  1102. could take me

  1103. home to glory

  1104. tomorrow.

  1105. D.A.

  1106. Carson, he

  1107. put it like

  1108. this.

  1109. He said,

  1110. a billion years

  1111. or so into

  1112. eternity, the

  1113. number of toys

  1114. we accumulated

  1115. for ourselves

  1116. during this

  1117. life will not

  1118. seem too

  1119. terribly important.

  1120. And do you

  1121. see, just as we

  1122. pull a few of

  1123. these threads

  1124. together this

  1125. evening, do you

  1126. see how radically

  1127. different this

  1128. community is going

  1129. to be from its

  1130. surrounding community?

  1131. on Crete, an

  1132. island full of

  1133. people renowned

  1134. for lying and

  1135. for being lazy,

  1136. what does Paul

  1137. tell them to do?

  1138. Devote themselves

  1139. to the truth and

  1140. devote themselves to

  1141. working hard.

  1142. Radically different

  1143. from the surrounding

  1144. world.

  1145. This is why Paul

  1146. left Titus on

  1147. Crete, to help

  1148. this church grow.

  1149. That is what he's

  1150. got to work hard

  1151. to do.

  1152. Now listen, we

  1153. started by joking

  1154. about what

  1155. reputations

  1156. different people

  1157. have.

  1158. And I wonder

  1159. just as I was

  1160. finishing this this

  1161. week, I wonder

  1162. what reputation

  1163. we have.

  1164. I wonder what

  1165. reputation the

  1166. church in

  1167. Edinburgh has.

  1168. The church in

  1169. St. Andrews, the

  1170. church in Glasgow,

  1171. the church in

  1172. Aberdeen, the

  1173. church in Britain,

  1174. the church in

  1175. Europe, the

  1176. church in the

  1177. world.

  1178. What reputation

  1179. do we have?

  1180. As outsiders,

  1181. they look in and

  1182. do they see this

  1183. community?

  1184. Well, here's

  1185. something that

  1186. encouraged me this

  1187. week.

  1188. It was an

  1189. article I read

  1190. that was taken

  1191. from the St.

  1192. Andrews University

  1193. student newspaper

  1194. which is called

  1195. The Stand.

  1196. And one of the

  1197. new students to

  1198. St. Andrews

  1199. University, he

  1200. wrote into The

  1201. Stand and he

  1202. gave his thoughts

  1203. on how he

  1204. perceived the

  1205. Christian community

  1206. as he lived his

  1207. life on campus.

  1208. Now there's a bit

1209. more to it on the

  1210. screen but that's

  1211. the kind of gist

  1212. of it.

  1213. But let me read

  1214. this to you.

  1215. It's fantastic.

  1216. So this is great.

  1217. This is what he's

  1218. perceiving right in

  1219. front of him.

  1220. He says this,

  1221. Growing up I

  1222. thought Christianity

  1223. was always

  1224. something for

  1225. older people.

  1226. It was for

  1227. teachers in

  1228. primary school,

  1229. for distant

  1230. aunts halfway

  1231. across the globe

  1232. or your

  1233. friends'

  1234. parents who

  1235. always brought

  1236. the largest

  1237. pumpkin to

  1238. harvest day.

  1239. People my

  1240. age meanwhile

  1241. weren't going

  1242. to listen to

  1243. any old type

  1244. of authority

  1245. especially the

  1246. authority of a

  1247. dusty old book.

  1248. We were too

  1249. young, we were

  1250. too forward

  1251. thinking.

  1252. In short

  1253. Christianity just

  1254. wasn't cool

  1255. enough for us.

  1256. In St.

  1257. Andrews however

  1258. young Christians

  1259. abide.

  1260. Maybe it's the

  1261. traditional aspect

  1262. of the university,

  1263. maybe it's the

  1264. town's illustrious

  1265. history as the

  1266. religious capital

  1267. of Scotland.

  1268. Whatever the

  1269. reason, and get

  1270. this, it is

  1271. impossible not to

  1272. notice that

  1273. Christianity is

  1274. thriving in this

  1275. town.

  1276. It is often

  1277. said that you

  1278. can never find

  1279. a Christian

  1280. here who you

  1281. cannot like.

  1282. And despite

  1283. having had

  1284. several bad

  1285. experiences from

  1286. a Church of

  1287. England school,

  1288. I have to

  1289. agree that

  1290. every single

  1291. Christian I

  1292. have met here

  1293. has been

  1294. lovely.

  1295. Isn't that a

  1296. great thing?

  1297. As people

  1298. perceive this

  1299. Christian community

  1300. in action,

  1301. it might have

  1302. been the

  1303. student community

  1304. there, but as

  1305. people perceive

  1306. this Christian

  1307. community, it's

  1308. our heart for

  1309. our community

  1310. that something

  1311. like that would

  1312. be said of

  1313. us.

  1314. That people in

  1315. this community

  1316. would be glad

  1317. that we were

  1318. here, and if

  1319. we ever left,

  1320. they would be

  1321. gutted.

  1322. And I guess

  1323. that's, and just

  1324. to finish off,

  1325. that's my prayer

  1326. for us as we

  1327. journey through

  1328. this letter

  1329. together.

  1330. And let me

  1331. finish by just

  1332. asking you to

  1333. embrace the

  1334. prayer.

  1335. You know, I

  1336. wonder if you

  1337. pray for our

  1338. church here at

  1339. Brunsfield.

  1340. I wonder if

  1341. you pray for

  1342. individuals here

  1343. at Brunsfield,

  1344. and I wonder if

  1345. you do, I wonder

  1346. what you pray

  1347. for them.

  1348. Well, it's my

  1349. prayer as we

  1350. journey through

  1351. this little letter

  1352. of Titus that

  1353. what we encounter

  1354. here in God's

  1355. word is he

  1356. teaches us by

  1357. his spirit that

  1358. these things would

  1359. become our prayer

  1360. for our community.

  1361. And that we

  1362. would go further

  1363. than just praying

  1364. for our own

  1365. superficial needs,

  1366. but actually we

  1367. would pray for

  1368. one another that

  1369. we would grow.

  1370. Grow individually

  1371. and grow corporately

  1372. in terms of our

  1373. knowing and our

  1374. showing.

  1375. That we would be

  1376. a community that

  1377. by God's grace

  1378. and by his

  1379. spirit, it

  1380. grows.

  1381. And I thought

  1382. it would just be

  1383. a great way to

  1384. end as we

  1385. respond just to

  1386. this little

  1387. introduction to

  1388. this letter

  1389. this evening,

  1390. to pray together.

  1391. So what I

  1392. thought would be

  1393. great for us to

  1394. do is just

  1395. maybe can I

  1396. ask three people

  1397. to pray?

  1398. Just open time

  1399. of prayer

  1400. together.

  1401. Pray for three

  1402. things for our

  1403. church family here

  1404. as we journey

  1405. through this

  1406. letter.

  1407. Firstly, if

  1408. somebody wants

  1409. to pray for

  1410. our growing,

  1411. and then secondly,

  1412. if somebody wants

  1413. to pray for our

  1414. knowing,

  1415. and then lastly,

  1416. if somebody wants

  1417. to pray for our

  1418. showing,

  1419. and then I'll

  1420. close our prayer

  1421. time together.

  1422. But remember,

  1423. just big loud

  1424. voices, let's

  1425. encourage one

  1426. another with this,

  1427. and let's just

  1428. respond to what

  1429. we've heard this

  1430. evening, and

  1431. let's just commit

  1432. ourselves over

  1433. this next little

  1434. while, and over

  1435. this, or our

  1436. lifetime as a

  1437. church together.

  1438. Let's just commit

  1439. it to the Lord.

  1440. So why don't we

  1441. do that now, and

  1442. let's pray together.

  1443. Father, I ask the

  1444. Lord that I might

  1445. grow in faith and

  1446. love and every

  1447. grace, might more

  1448. of his salvation

  1449. know, and seek

  1450. more earnestly his

  1451. face.

  1452. Our dear Father,

  1453. we would thank you

  1454. for those lyrics

  1455. that we have of

  1456. John Newton.

  1457. Lord, just a

  1458. passion to see

  1459. himself and to

  1460. see your church

  1461. grow.

  1462. And so, Father, we

  1463. ask that you would

1464. help us to do that

  1465. this week.

  1466. Lord, help us to

  1467. grow in our

  1468. showing and in our

  1469. knowing, and Lord,

  1470. that we might just

  1471. live fruitful and

  1472. productive lives for

  1473. your glory.

  1474. And so it's through

  1475. your Son's precious

  1476. and worthy name that

  1477. we pray.

  1478. Amen.
