  1. Thank you, Graham. It really is great to be here this morning. Thank you for your very

  2. warm welcome to Brunswick Evangelical. Permit me, just as I was alluding to there, permit me to

  3. also say a huge heartfelt thank you for your prayers and your financial partnership with us

  4. as Christian unions in Edinburgh. I've seen some wonderful gospel fruit off the back of our week

  5. of events that we ran at the end of January, the start of February. I firmly believe that God's

  6. mission carries on throughout the whole year. God is at work 52 weeks out of 52 in the lives of these

  7. students that I see and that I know. But this specific week of events that we ran at the end

  8. of January, start of February, couldn't have happened without the backing of local churches such as

  9. yourselves. So thank you very, very much. Okay, Luke chapter 9, we've read and we've prayed. Let's

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  10. crack on. I remember sitting a few years ago with a girl called Naomi, who I worked alongside at

  11. Chalmers for a few years. And we were reminiscing on individual time spent abroad in other countries.

  12. We both studied Spanish. I studied at Glasgow University because I like the look of the degree

  13. there. She studied at St. Andrews because she's much smarter than me. And I went on my year abroad

  14. to Madrid and then we went to Argentina. And when we worked at Chalmers, we used to speak to one another

  15. over lunch and probably other times when we should have been doing work,

  16. about cultural mistakes that we made when we were in the countries that we were in for our years

  17. abroad. So things that we would do that would look like perfect sense to us, that would make perfect

  18. sense. But as locals would watch us, they would say to us, no, that's not how we do things around

  19. here. They would have to explain to us that things were done differently in that place.

  20. And so let me give you an example of that. When I was in Spain, I worked in a school as an English

  21. teacher. And I remember after my first day of work, getting back to the flat of the host family

  22. that I was living with for the year. I ran half past four in the afternoon and I felt fairly peckish,

  23. having not really eaten much since breakfast, but I was fairly content to hold off until dinner at

  24. 5.30 sharp. Except Spaniards don't have dinner at 5.30 sharp. That would be a late lunch. So imagine

  25. the horror when the mother of the family came home from work and explained to me with great enthusiasm

  26. that we would be eating early at half past nine. And that was easily one of the longest and the

  27. hungriest days I ever spent in Madrid. Another time I remember walking with a teacher to the local

  28. primary school where this teacher's seven-year-old daughter was a pupil. And during the break,

  29. the children were all outside playing and the two of us walked straight into the playground,

  30. he found his daughter, scooped her up, kissed her and put her back down again.

  31. And when I explained afterwards that in this country, in Scotland, in the UK, you'd never be

  32. able to wander into a playground and do that, he smiled, he shrugged and he said to me,

  33. it's not like that here. Things are different.

  34. And if I was going to live there in Spain, then I had to rewrite my understanding of how I did things

  35. based on the culture of the country I was in. And if that's true of a Scotsman in Spain for nine

  36. months, it's certainly true of those that follow Jesus and follow his teaching. Anyone who wants to

  37. believe in Christ to live in his kingdom needs to rewrite their understanding of how we do things

  38. based on the culture of the kingdom that we now belong to, Christ's kingdom.

  39. And you see Jesus doing throughout the whole of chapter nine, something which rewrites

  40. the disciples' understanding of what the kingdom values and principles are.

  41. Dr. Luke is recording for us what Christ's rule will be like. And there's much that initially looks

  42. great in the eyes of those that follow Jesus. It's clear from the first six verses of chapter

  43. nine that Jesus' healing kingship will be free from sickness, free from demonic spirits.

  44. It's clear from the feeding of the 5,000 that Jesus' abundant kingship will be free from hunger.

  45. And it's clear from the transfiguration that Jesus' powerful kingship will be one for his true

  46. glory is revealed. And it would even appear that the disciples are starting to partially understand

  47. who Jesus is. Peter says in verse 22, you, Jesus, are God's Messiah.

  48. But what's obvious from what we read earlier on is that the disciples still have a very this world

  49. view. They run the risk of interpreting everything as a we experience glory now

  50. understanding of Jesus' kingdom. And you can see why they might think that after witnessing

  51. everything that Jesus did and everything that Jesus said, what could possibly go wrong?

  52. He comes as a king with an authority, with a glory unlike anything ever seen before.

  53. However, Jesus makes it very clear that he comes as a suffering king.

  54. His kingdom, by contrast to the expectations of the disciples, has vastly different values

  55. and operates in a very, very different way. He mentions his death in verse 22. He mentions

  56. a life of self-denial from 23 to 26. Jesus is rewriting his disciples' understanding,

  57. of what it means to be a part of his kingdom. You want to follow me in my kingdom, chaps?

  58. Well, you'll have to undergo a serious readjustment of your expectations.

  59. You think we experience glory now? Well, it's not like that here. Things are different.

  60. That's not how we do things around here.

  61. And for us sitting here 2,000 years later, it's no different. Jesus is speaking to people

  62. who would seek to follow him. Everyday men and women from all walks of life, just like us sitting here.

  63. And it's very easy for us that genuinely follow Jesus to still allow the principles of this world,

  64. of this day and age, to sneak into our lives and to twist our understanding of how Jesus' kingdom operates.

  65. It's very easy and it's very dangerous. And Jesus will not allow it to happen.

  66. Perhaps you're here and you're looking into Christianity for yourself.

  67. Here it is.

  68. Here's what it looks like to follow Jesus.

  69. He has a terrible PR campaign.

  70. He wants everyone who would follow him to know that it's a difficult journey

  71. that does not lead to earthly glory and success,

  72. but does lead to eternal glory and eternal success.

  73. And so last week we were encouraged to stop, look and listen to Jesus.

  74. And this week, under the heading of a detailed description of discipleship,

  75. we're encouraged to do just exactly the same.

  76. God says to Jesus' followers in verse 35, listen, listen to him.

  77. And so the first thing to listen to, from verses 43 to 50,

  78. is the caution from the king who devotes his life.

  79. The caution from the king who devotes his life.

  80. After what they've seen, everyone is amazed at the greatness of God.

  81. Everyone is marvelling at all that Jesus did.

  82. And in the middle of what looks like a crescendo, a high point in Jesus' ministry,

  83. he delivers the most hard-hitting and devastating news.

  84. He turns to his disciples and says, verse 44,

  85. listen carefully to what I'm about to tell you.

  86. The son of man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.

  87. At the moment when Jesus looks at his most invincible, he says, I'm going to die.

  88. At the moment when Jesus looks at his most popular, he says,

  89. I'm going to be delivered into the hands of men.

  90. These same crowds that are marvelling will soon shout, crucify him.

  91. And this news was so far outside of the disciples' field of expectation

  92. that they just can't fathom that it'll happen.

  93. They just cannot wrap their heads around it.

  94. But we're also told by Luke in verse 45 that it was hidden from them.

  95. They were starting to see who Jesus was as he opened their eyes,

  96. but only very, very gradually.

  97. Jesus still has much to teach them.

  98. And the full extent of Jesus' glory is seen when Jesus devotes his very own life

  99. for the sake of the salvation of others.

  100. Jesus' caution is that the Savior must suffer,

  101. so if the disciples are to follow him,

  102. then his way must also be their way.

  103. It's a hard truth for the disciples that desperately needs to sink into their heads

  104. and sink into their hearts.

  105. And that's why Jesus has some strong words to say about what follows.

  106. The disciples are arguing about who is the greatest.

  107. You can imagine the conversation, can't you?

  108. Well, when Jesus rescues his people, we'll be the ones in the inner circle.

  109. I'll probably be the greatest because I was one of the first disciples picked.

  110. I was even up in the mountain with Jesus just there.

  111. You were down here struggling to drive an evil spirit out of a little boy.

  112. No, some disciple you are.

  113. Jesus has just been talking sacrifice.

  114. And they're talking self-exaltation.

  115. Rivalry rears its ugly head.

  116. And so in the process of rewriting their understanding of how Jesus' kingdom is to operate,

  117. he has to issue another severe caution.

  118. The disciples want personal status.

  119. They want personal grandeur.

  120. And Jesus takes a little boy and says,

  121. whoever welcomes this child, whoever receives this child in my name, receives me.

  122. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.

  123. This is the sort of company the disciples are to entertain.

  124. Those that follow Jesus, regardless of status or grandeur.

  125. The child who is following Jesus, perhaps with his parents, perhaps on his own,

  126. he would look like the least in any kingdom.

  127. No reputation.

  128. No standing in society.

  129. But if this child follows Jesus,

  130. then whoever welcomes this child in Jesus' name,

  131. welcomes Jesus himself.

  132. No self-promotion.

  133. Instead, sacrificial welcome.

  134. And you see how it's a picture of what Jesus is doing.

  135. He welcomes the lowest.

  136. This child cannot offer Jesus anything.

  137. And yet, Jesus takes the boy and puts him by his side,

  138. knowing that he will devote his life to forgive the sins of this young boy.

  139. And as he does that, he says to the disciples in verse 48,

  140. it is the one who is least among you who is the greatest.

  141. It is the least among you who is the greatest.

  142. Who's that?

  143. Well, it will be Jesus himself, won't it?

  144. As he hangs on the cross.

  145. He will be the one who will become loathed, despised, delivered into the hands of men.

  146. He will become the least.

  147. But Jesus knows that the path to true greatness and glory takes him via the cross.

  148. And he wants his disciples to follow accordingly.

  149. Jesus models and will model the selflessness and sacrificial love he wants his followers to have,

  150. because that is what true glory looks like in Christ's kingdom.

  151. And just in case we were starting to wonder if the disciples were beginning to comprehend,

  152. John very helpfully clears it up for us.

  153. His response to all this is to say,

  154. Oh, Master, we saw someone driving at demons in your name,

  155. and we tried to stop him because, you know, he's not one of us.

  156. And after everything that Jesus has just been explaining,

  157. my initial response to John is,

  158. John, you idiot.

  159. And yet I know exactly what it is to be in John's position.

  160. I was helping out last week at a CU events week down in Coventry.

  161. It's the middle of nowhere, honestly.

  162. And on Friday morning, we were feeding back as to how the Thursday night event had gone.

  163. And the guy sitting opposite me, who was also helping out with the week,

  164. explained to us all that God had used him to lead two students to repentance and faith in Jesus.

  165. And I'd love to tell you that my instinctive reaction was,

  166. That's such good news.

  167. But it wasn't.

  168. My instinctive reaction was,

  169. Why couldn't that have been me?

  170. I had to sit with someone who believed in Buddhism,

  171. couldn't even tell me what type of Buddhism they believed in,

  172. had no interest in Jesus,

  173. and it was a really frustrating conversation for 40 minutes.

  174. How come this other guy managed to enjoy success and I didn't?

  175. But if Jesus' path is one where he devotes his life for the sake of his people,

  176. then Jesus' caution to me, to all of us, to his disciples,

  177. is that there can be no spiritual snobbery,

  178. or spiritual elitism,

  179. or spiritual jealousy.

  180. There will always be those that are doing fruitful gospel work,

  181. when things just aren't going well for us.

  182. Maybe they're in a different part of the city.

  183. Maybe they aren't just quite like us.

  184. And yes, we have to be discerning.

  185. Yes, we have to ask whether it's genuine gospel work or not.

  186. But it's too easy to allow that to lapse into tribalism,

  187. because they're not one of us.

  188. Elitism, snobbery, is the ugliest thing in our church today.

  189. And I feel the tug towards it in my own heart.

  190. The Christian unions in Edinburgh are really healthy,

  191. as I said earlier on.

  192. It's very easy for me to think that other CUs across Scotland

  193. just don't quite have it right.

  194. Not like we do.

  195. I don't want people to become Christians somewhere else.

  196. I want them to become Christians here.

  197. How ugly is that?

  198. And you guys will know where risks appearing in your own hearts

  199. and in the life of the church here.

  200. But what will put a stop to it

  201. is listening to the caution that comes from the king

  202. that devotes his life.

  203. If people are going to follow a selfless

  204. and sacrificial King Jesus

  205. to true glory in his kingdom,

  206. how can we take any self-promotion on the way?

  207. It's a real message for all who are called to be disciples.

  208. Let there be no self-promotion, rivalry, triumphalism.

  209. Rejoice.

  210. Rejoice when others are doing the work of Christ's kingdom.

  211. Rejoice when others are doing the work of Christ's kingdom.

  212. Not according to Luke.

  213. The destination of the journey, according to Luke in verse 51,

  214. is Jesus being taken up to heaven.

  215. And so his journey through immense suffering

  216. leads ultimately to eternal glory

  217. and it exemplifies the journey anyone takes

  218. who trusts in Jesus

  219. from the temporary kingdom of this creation

  220. to his kingdom of the new creation.

  221. And the road of discipleship will look like self-sacrifice.

  222. And here we see clearly in these verses

  223. it will look like facing real rejection

  224. and open opposition.

  225. Jesus is going through this territory

  226. for the first time in Luke's gospel.

  227. He is decidedly and obviously and purposefully

  228. extending his kingdom to the foreigners.

  229. All are invited.

  230. The Samaritans would have been seen

  231. as second-class citizens in the eyes of the Jews.

  232. But true to Jesus' character,

  233. true to Jesus' kingdom,

  234. the gospel comes to them on the same terms.

  235. He has come for the insider and the outcast,

  236. for the privileged and the poor.

  237. But all must welcome the saviour.

  238. It's not enough just to hear about Jesus

  239. or to meet him.

  240. And tragically in this case,

  241. the Samaritans don't want anything to do with him

  242. because, verse 53,

  243. he was heading for Jerusalem.

  244. They seem to understand where Jesus is going

  245. and Samaritans reject the idea

  246. that Jerusalem is the place

  247. where God should be worshipped.

  248. So maybe it was pure sectarian hatred

  249. on the part of the Samaritans.

  250. Regardless of the reasons,

  251. when people will not welcome Jesus,

  252. when they say,

  253. we don't want you,

  254. we don't want your message,

  255. Jesus listens.

  256. He doesn't try and alter his teaching

  257. to be welcomed.

  258. Verse 56,

  259. he and his disciples went to another village.

  260. Well, how are the disciples going to respond to this?

  261. Well, once again,

  262. just in case we're starting to wonder

  263. that the disciples were beginning to comprehend,

  264. James and John clear things up for us.

  265. They asked Jesus,

  266. verse 54,

  267. do you want us to call fire down from heaven

  268. to destroy them?

  269. They want justice and vengeance

  270. on their own terms.

  271. And once more,

  272. Jesus has to rewrite the principles of his kingdom

  273. on their hearts.

  274. He rebukes James and John.

  275. Let's be clear here.

  276. Jesus doesn't rebuke them

  277. because there are no consequences

  278. to rejecting Jesus.

  279. No, no.

  280. Jesus makes it very,

  281. very clear

  282. that there are severe

  283. and serious consequences

  284. to rejecting him.

  285. However,

  286. Jesus' correction here to James and John

  287. comes from the king

  288. that instead demonstrates his grace.

  289. Wonderfully,

  290. if you read on

  291. in Luke's second book of the Bible,

  292. Acts,

  293. you'll see in chapter 8

  294. that Peter and John,

  295. of all people,

  296. place their hands on many Samaritans

  297. to receive the Holy Spirit

  298. who have heard the gospel

  299. and are new Christians.

  300. I reckon John,

  301. when he was there in Samaria

  302. in Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  303. probably kept pretty quiet

  304. about what he'd said here

  305. in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  306. But to see the Samaritans

  307. who had rejected Jesus

  308. now welcome Jesus instead

  309. is a wonderful display

  310. of the grace

  311. that the king extends

  312. towards his enemies.

  313. Jesus makes it very clear

  314. that whilst it won't happen

  315. to everyone,

  316. there are definitely those

  317. that first resist the message

  318. of the gospel

  319. who latterly welcome

  320. Christ into their lives.

  321. I'm sure we'll know

  322. of people like that.

  323. Again,

  324. very easy for me to think

  325. how awful of James and John

  326. to suggest

  327. such a thing as fire from heaven

  328. when Jesus had very,

  329. very clearly spoken

  330. about welcoming the outsider.

  331. However,

  332. I've had some fairly choice thoughts

  333. about those

  334. that have rejected the gospel

  335. and have mocked

  336. the king that I follow.

  337. Perhaps,

  338. even in my darkest moments,

  339. I've thought,

  340. I cannot wait

  341. until that person

  342. stands before God

  343. and realises

  344. they've been wrong

  345. all along.

  346. It'll feel so good

  347. when that person

  348. kneels before God

  349. and feels the weight

  350. of every word

  351. they've said against him.

  352. Have you ever thought that?

  353. Is that such a different attitude

  354. to the one that James and John

  355. display here?

  356. I don't think it is.

  357. Let's understand

  358. the reality of all this.

  359. To be on the path

  360. to glory with Jesus

  361. will always mean hostility

  362. from all sorts of people

  363. for all sorts of reasons.

  364. Let's not be surprised by that.

  365. Yet,

  366. Jesus is patient

  367. and his judgment

  368. is withheld

  369. for the moment.

  370. and knowing that the king

  371. we follow

  372. demonstrates his grace

  373. to his enemies

  374. means that we too

  375. are to extend grace

  376. to those that oppose him.

  377. And friends,

  378. it's incredibly hard,

  379. isn't it?

  380. It can often come

  381. at real personal cost.

  382. cost.

  383. And yet,

  384. it was exactly

  385. at a real personal cost

  386. that Jesus

  387. extended his grace

  388. to us

  389. before we were

  390. his friends.

  391. Realistically,

  392. can we seek

  393. any sort of

  394. earthly retribution

  395. for those that have

  396. opposed Jesus

  397. when we have done

  398. exactly the same thing

  399. and yet Jesus

  400. has demonstrated

  401. his grace

  402. towards us?

  403. Wonderfully,

  404. thankfully,

  405. vengeance does not

  406. belong to us.

  407. It belongs to the Lord.

  408. So in turn,

  409. we extend grace

  410. to others.

  411. See again here

  412. how Jesus' way

  413. ends up being

  414. the way of the disciple too.

  415. So the caution

  416. from the king

  417. who devotes his life,

  418. the correction

  419. from the king

  420. who demonstrates his grace,

  421. and now finally

  422. as we close,

  423. the call from the king

  424. who demands our all.

  425. The call from the king

  426. who demands our all.

  427. Very quickly,

  428. three short incidents

  429. between Jesus

  430. and those that would

  431. follow him.

  432. That word is all over

  433. our last section

  434. this morning,

  435. follow.

  436. And Jesus is clarifying

  437. the nature of the call

  438. to follow him.

  439. The first man

  440. that he speaks to

  441. wants to leap

  442. into a commitment

  443. to follow Jesus

  444. without first understanding

  445. the cost of it all.

  446. Jesus warns him

  447. clearly in verse 58

  448. that whilst foxes

  449. have dens,

  450. birds have nests,

  451. the son of man

  452. has no place

  453. to lay his head.

  454. Jesus' path he walks

  455. is one of homelessness

  456. in this world.

  457. It's a world

  458. that he created.

  459. Even the animals

  460. have somewhere

  461. they can call home.

  462. And yet he's not

  463. putting down

  464. any roots

  465. in this world

  466. because he is

  467. heading towards

  468. the cross

  469. and he is heading

  470. towards the new

  471. creation to come.

  472. He is an outcast

  473. in this world

  474. and for any disciple

  475. seeking to follow Jesus

  476. we cannot

  477. permanently invest

  478. in the things

  479. of this age.

  480. We cannot put

  481. unhealthy roots down

  482. in this world

  483. as our home.

  484. Not when we weigh up

  485. with the new creation

  486. to come.

  487. And Jesus is

  488. seriously reconfiguring

  489. how his followers

  490. view things

  491. in this world.

  492. It doesn't mean

  493. we can't enjoy things.

  494. Please don't mishear me.

  495. Friends,

  496. family,

  497. romance,

  498. holidays,

  499. sport,

  500. food,

  501. these are good

  502. gifts to us

  503. from God.

  504. But the son of man,

  505. the creator,

  506. didn't think to take

  507. a home for himself

  508. in this world

  509. when he was here

  510. in the flesh

  511. sharing the good news

  512. of the kingdom

  513. to come.

  514. He had every right to

  515. but he didn't.

  516. He knew where he was headed.

  517. And his demand

  518. on this first man

  519. is that he will

  520. follow a saviour

  521. who did not find

  522. his home here.

  523. That's the warning.

  524. His people can expect

  525. a life of exile,

  526. not comfort,

  527. in this creation,

  528. awaiting the wonderful

  529. new creation to come.

  530. The second person

  531. Jesus calls to follow him

  532. gives what initially

  533. seems like a perfectly

  534. reasonable reaction

  535. in verse 59.

  536. Lord, first let me go

  537. and bury my father.

  538. Surely that's only reasonable.

  539. But let's understand

  540. that the whole

  541. burial process

  542. for a Jew

  543. would have taken

  544. roughly a year

  545. from start to finish.

  546. It's not even

  547. explicitly clear

  548. that this man's father

  549. has died yet.

  550. He might still have

  551. a few years

  552. to go first.

  553. But regardless

  554. of all that,

  555. this man has not

  556. grasped

  557. the urgency

  558. of Christ's call.

  559. Nothing is more important,

  560. not even

  561. our earthly families.

  562. The Bible has some

  563. very positive things

  564. to say about family life.

  565. We're told to honour

  566. our parents.

  567. We're told to raise

  568. our children to know

  569. and to love Jesus.

  570. However,

  571. when the time comes

  572. and it will often come,

  573. Jesus' call

  574. is firstly

  575. to him

  576. and to his kingdom

  577. over

  578. our earthly relationships

  579. with family.

  580. I've spoken to

  581. young men and women

  582. who have given

  583. their lives to Jesus

  584. at university

  585. through various

  586. events weeks

  587. and these students

  588. have parents

  589. that are now

  590. desperately upset

  591. and desperately angry

  592. that their child

  593. goes to church

  594. every week.

  595. I've spoken to

  596. students who are

  597. thinking of perhaps

  598. spending a year

  599. volunteering with UCCF,

  600. working for a church

  601. or another Christian

  602. movement.

  603. They're expected

  604. to fundraise

  605. for the year

  606. and often these

  607. young men and women

  608. come under tremendous

  609. pressure from their parents.

  610. Some of these parents

  611. are Christians

  612. and they say things like,

  613. how are you going

  614. to afford that?

  615. I think you should

  616. be getting a job,

  617. a good job.

  618. We've paid for you

  619. to go through

  620. three, four years

  621. of university.

  622. What a waste

  623. it would be

  624. if you were to

  625. give it all up

  626. and work for a church.

  627. Leave that

  628. for other people.

  629. And the tug

  630. of feeling like

  631. your first allegiance

  632. is to your parents

  633. at the expense

  634. of honouring Jesus

  635. is very, very real

  636. and it's very, very hard.

  637. Jesus' call

  638. as king

  639. is to demand

  640. all of this man's life

  641. and it's the same call

  642. he places on any follower.

  643. It's a deliberately

  644. sore example here.

  645. It's a deliberately

  646. sore example

  647. because it's meant

  648. to show us

  649. just how difficult it is.

  650. As I said,

  651. no small print.

  652. Even the best

  653. of reasons

  654. and excuses

  655. cannot delay,

  656. cannot derail us.

  657. And the last

  658. interaction is similar.

  659. A man says,

  660. I will follow you,

  661. Lord,

  662. but first

  663. let me go back

  664. and say goodbye

  665. to my family.

  666. Surely,

  667. again,

  668. a fairly reasonable

  669. excuse.

  670. But the man

  671. is betrayed

  672. by his own words.

  673. I will follow you,

  674. but first.

  675. These are words

  676. that are spoken

  677. all too often.

  678. I know a girl

  679. who I started

  680. university with

  681. who told me

  682. that she was going

  683. to,

  684. and I quote,

  685. give up God

  686. for university

  687. before picking him

  688. back up again

  689. after she graduated.

  690. I will follow you,

  691. but first.

  692. And it's no surprise

  693. that she's no longer

  694. anywhere near

  695. following Jesus.

  696. And Jesus says

  697. that this man

  698. and anyone else

  699. with this attitude

  700. is similar to a man

  701. who plows,

  702. looking away

  703. over his shoulder,

  704. only to see the plow

  705. veer off track.

  706. We've seen it

  707. happen ourselves.

  708. Jesus has to be

  709. our sole focus

  710. before anything else.

  711. There's no room

  712. for Jesus plus.

  713. The first man

  714. is too quick,

  715. hasn't weighed up

  716. the cost.

  717. The second is too slow,

  718. hasn't grasped

  719. the urgency.

  720. The third is too busy

  721. trying to juggle Jesus

  722. alongside all these

  723. other commitments.

  724. And Jesus' call

  725. is to demand everything,

  726. not because he wants

  727. to ruin our fun,

  728. not because he needs

  729. our everything

  730. as a narcissist,

  731. but Jesus knows

  732. that true joy,

  733. true discipleship,

  734. means following him

  735. wholeheartedly.

  736. He knows the dangers

  737. of allowing the principles,

  738. the values,

  739. the priorities

  740. of this world

  741. to creep into our walk

  742. with him.

  743. And he does not want us

  744. to fall away from him.

  745. So he says to his disciples,

  746. that's not how we do

  747. things around here.

  748. The caution from the king

  749. who devotes his life

  750. is to say no to self-promotion,

  751. no to spiritual snobbery,

  752. no to rivalry.

  753. The correction from the king

  754. who demonstrates his grace

  755. is that we will face opposition,

  756. but we respond not with

  757. our own flavor of vengeance,

  758. but with grace and patience

  759. in the same way that he did.

  760. And the call from the king

  761. who demands our all

  762. is that true discipleship

  763. means that he is the number

  764. one priority in our lives.

  765. It's uncomfortable,

  766. it's urgent,

  767. it's uncompromising,

  768. but it's everything

  769. that Jesus embodied

  770. when he was on earth.

  771. Jesus doesn't make demands

  772. that he did not live out himself

  773. in his own life.

  774. Do you see that?

  775. When we experience

  776. all of these struggles,

  777. when we try and soldier on

  778. to live the life of a disciple,

  779. we can turn to Jesus and say,

  780. this is really difficult.

  781. And he turns back to us

  782. and responds with,

  783. I know.

  784. Trust me.

  785. I know.

  786. And so the take home from today

  787. isn't moralism.

  788. It's not be more modest,

  789. be more gracious,

  790. be more committed.

  791. That's not what I'm saying.

  792. That's not Luke chapter nine.

  793. The take home is follow Jesus.

  794. See how he models

  795. that which his disciples

  796. are to follow.

  797. See the cross.

  798. See the way that he reconciles us

  799. to God and pays the debt

  800. of our sins.

  801. See the destination

  802. at the end.

  803. His kingdom for all eternity

  804. for the believer.

  805. Let Jesus be what motivates you

  806. to live in such a way

  807. that points away from ourselves,

  808. away from this world,

  809. to him

  810. and to his kingdom.

  811. let me pray for us

  812. as we close.

  813. Lord Jesus,

  814. we thank you for the

  815. honesty

  816. and the realism

  817. that the Bible has

  818. towards those who follow you.

  819. Father,

  820. in many ways,

  821. the personal cost

  822. is great,

  823. but we can look at Jesus

  824. and we can see

  825. the way that he

  826. models all of these things

  827. for us to follow.

  828. Father,

  829. we know this morning

  830. that an eternity

  831. with you,

  832. an eternity with Christ

  833. is so worth

  834. the pain,

  835. the suffering

  836. of this day and age.

  837. Father,

  838. help us

  839. by your Holy Spirit

  840. to have our eyes

  841. fixed upon Christ.

  842. Help us

  843. by your Holy Spirit

  844. to lean upon you

  845. not to mingle

  846. kingdom priorities

  847. and principles

  848. with the principles

  849. and priorities

  850. of this world.

  851. Help us,

  852. Father,

  853. by your Spirit

  854. to stay distinct.

  855. Help us to live

  856. the life

  857. of a disciple

  858. that genuinely

  859. loves you

  860. increasingly

  861. as the days go on,

  862. that knows you better

  863. and understands

  864. the love

  865. that you have

  866. for us better.

  867. Father,

  868. we thank you

  869. that for those of us

  870. that this morning

  871. have not been doing this,

  872. we know that there is

  873. forgiveness

  874. because of the cross.

  875. We're so thankful,

  876. Father,

  877. that we can turn back

  878. to you,

  879. look at what Jesus did

  880. and say,

  881. forgive me

  882. and know that

  883. that forgiveness

  884. is ours.

  885. And so,

  886. Father,

  887. would you forgive me?

  888. Would you forgive

  889. all of us sitting here

  890. that have allowed

  891. other things

  892. to sneak in

  893. and distort

  894. the principles

  895. of the kingdom

  896. in our lives?

  897. Give us everything

  898. we need,

  899. Father,

  900. to live a life

  901. that glorifies you

  902. in the same way

  903. that Jesus did.

  904. In whose name we pray.

  905. Amen.

  906. Let's do it.

  907. Lup searchчат-

  908. By the way,

  909. Abraham,

  910. Jesus,
