  1. Good morning. Good morning. It's always very encouraging, having preached somewhere previously, to get invited back.

  2. So thank you very much for bearing with me once again this morning.

  3. Do have your Bibles open at Luke 10. Do be checking that what I say is what God says in the Bibles.

  4. I'm fallible. I'm not God's Word, which is infallible.

  5. Now, as Paul's ready to pray for us, why don't we just get started?

  6. Well, before we properly dig into this passage, there is two things I would like us to see first.

  7. And they're in verse 1. Chapter 10, verse 1.

  8. The first two words in verse 1 is this.

  9. After this, the Lord appointed 72. After this.

  10. Anytime you see it in the Bible, you've always got to go back to what came before to find out the context of this passage.

  11. So clearly, something's just happened.

  12. And let's just remind ourselves where we are in Luke's Gospel.

  13. We've just entered the next section of Luke, which begins at chapter 9, verse 51.

  14. It says this.

  15. As the time approached for him, that is Jesus, to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

  16. The time is coming for Jesus' earthly ministry to come to an end.

  17. The time is coming for Jesus to be taken back up into heaven.

  18. The time is coming for Jesus to leave his disciples.

  19. But something has to happen first before that comes about.

  20. Where is Jesus heading to?

  21. He's heading to Jerusalem.

  22. And as we know, we know what's going to happen in Jerusalem, don't we?

  23. Jesus is going to be betrayed, arrested, crucified.

  24. Which makes it incredible when you read verse 51, which says that Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

  25. He knew what was going to happen in Jerusalem.

  26. He knew he was going to be betrayed by one of his own.

  27. He knew he was going to be arrested and eventually die a humiliating death upon the cross.

  28. Yet here he is, setting out, face like flint on Jerusalem.

  29. Knowing exactly what's going to happen.

  30. So Jesus is going to die.

  31. He's going to be raised back to life.

  32. He's going to be taken to heaven.

  33. But he's going to leave his disciples behind.

  34. So right now, there is a need for Jesus to train his disciples.

  35. He needs to instruct them and teach them to equip them for a time after he has gone back to heaven.

  36. And last week, Scott Hamilton was preaching from this passage and he showed us the cost of discipleship.

  37. It was saying in verse 57 and 62, there's no way to lay your head.

  38. Let the dead bury the dead.

  39. There's an urgency to this mission.

  40. Leave your family behind.

  41. There's a priority to this mission.

  42. And this week, we're going to be looking at Jesus as he teaches his followers about going on mission for Christ.

  43. Going on mission for the sake of the gospel.

  44. That's the first thing.

  45. Second thing.

  46. Who is Jesus speaking to here?

  47. Read with me again.

  48. Okay, after this, verse 1, after this, the Lord appointed 72 others and sent them.

  49. 72 others.

  50. Why does Luke say others and not just 72?

  51. By the way, some versions might have 70 in some of your Bibles.

  52. It doesn't really matter.

  53. 70, 72.

  54. But what does matter is the word others.

  55. Well, we've already seen Jesus send out his disciples, the chosen 12, at the start of chapter 9 on mission.

  56. So when Luke now says 72 others, he is telling us that these are not the chosen 12 being sent out.

  57. These are everyday followers of Jesus.

  58. There's nothing particularly special about them.

  59. They're not professional, full-time gospel workers.

  60. They're regular people who have chosen to follow Christ.

  61. And because they're followers of Jesus, they are sent out as followers of Jesus.

  62. Now, what's the point?

  63. Well, the point is, if you are a follower of Jesus here this morning, then you are sent out by Jesus on mission.

  64. It doesn't matter if you're a full-time gospel worker or if you're a plumber.

  65. It doesn't matter if you're a lawyer, teacher, a binman, retired, unemployed.

  66. If you're a follower of Jesus, you're called to go.

  67. And so the words we read in this passage matters to us.

  68. Because it's Jesus teaching us and instructing us what we should do when we go, when we're sent out by Christ.

  69. Now, I have sat, I've heard many sermons.

  70. I've preached sermons myself.

  71. Who are called to go.

  72. We know the Great Commission, Matthew 28, go and make disciples of all nations.

  73. And quite often I sit there under that teaching or even when I say the words myself, I think,

  74. fine, okay, let's go.

  75. Jesus says, go, let's go.

  76. We better do it with a sense of duty.

  77. We need to obey him, off we pop.

  78. We get to work on Monday morning, might share a gospel conversation with our fellow worker, with a friend, with a neighbor.

  79. By Tuesday, we've kind of gone off it.

  80. We start to feel guilty by Wednesday and forgotten it by Thursday.

  81. But I think if that is our attitude,

  82. if we see this call to go by Jesus as a sense of duty rather than a sense of joy,

  83. then we are missing something quite profound, I think.

  84. We are missing the joy, the blessing, the privilege that is ours to be sent by Jesus on his mission.

  85. There's a hope that as we work those passions together this morning,

  86. we will be captivated by just who it is that sends us, Jesus Christ.

  87. Because the more we're captivated by him, the more we'll have this desire to go out for him.

  88. And that will make all the difference in the world.

  89. Maybe you're here today and you don't think yourself as a follower of Jesus.

  90. Maybe you're just exploring the claims of Christianity, of who Jesus is.

  91. Well, can I encourage you also to keep listening?

  92. Because I believe Jesus has some very profound to say to you this morning as well.

  93. Jesus contains the words of eternal life.

  94. Words that I believe are for you to hear.

  95. So let's keep going.

  96. If you take a note, we're going to do this under three points.

  97. Followers of Jesus pray and go.

  98. Followers of Jesus proclaim the good news.

  99. And followers of Jesus rejoice.

  100. Followers of Jesus pray and go.

  101. Followers of Jesus proclaim the good news.

  102. Followers of Jesus rejoice.

  103. First one, followers of Jesus pray and go.

  104. Now the first thing we see in verse 2 is that Jesus tells his followers

  105. that the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

  106. In other words, Jesus is saying, now is a great time for mission.

  107. Now there are plenty of people just ripe to be plucked.

  108. Jesus says in John 4 to his disciples,

  109. I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields.

  110. They are ripe for harvest.

  111. Now Jesus is not talking about corn or wheat to make his bread.

  112. He's speaking about spiritual harvest that is ripe for the picking.

  113. When we look out over Edinburgh, do we see what Jesus sees?

  114. When we look out over the hundreds of thousands of people

  115. who do not yet know Jesus

  116. and are currently running towards an eternity cut off from God,

  117. what do we see?

  118. Do we see a dry and barren land

  119. where it seems that there could be no gospel fruit?

  120. Or do we see what Jesus sees?

  121. A harvest ready to be picked.

  122. And if we do see this harvest ready to be picked,

  123. we'll also see there's the same problem here that Jesus sees.

  124. There's a lack of harvest workers.

  125. Now when I say harvest workers,

  126. I do not mean full-time gospel workers.

  127. Although that is true, there is certainly a lack of them.

  128. But remember the context.

  129. It's the 72 others who are being sent out.

  130. The everyday followers of Jesus.

  131. There's a shortage of everyday followers of Jesus

  132. going out into the harvest field.

  133. So what's the solution?

  134. Well, perhaps surprisingly,

  135. it's not to go.

  136. At least not at first.

  137. What does Jesus say?

  138. Come on in the verse 2.

  139. The harvest are painful,

  140. the workers are few.

  141. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,

  142. to send out workers into his harvest fields.

  143. The followers of Jesus

  144. are to pray for more harvest workers.

  145. So as we look out across Edinburgh,

  146. as we see the thousands of people

  147. who are currently lost,

  148. like sheep without a shepherd,

  149. we should pray.

  150. Ask the Lord of the harvest

  151. to send out workers into his harvest field.

  152. Simple enough, isn't it?

  153. But do we do it enough?

  154. Do we remember to pray for more harvest workers

  155. when we pray as individuals,

  156. in our home groups,

  157. or when we gather together as a church?

  158. We may well wonder

  159. why there are so many lost people in Edinburgh

  160. when there are a good number

  161. of decent, Bible-centered,

  162. gospel-centered churches,

  163. but yet we don't pray for more harvest workers.

  164. Pray to the Lord of the harvest

  165. to send out workers into his field.

  166. That's the first thing we are called to do.

  167. But here's a word of caution.

  168. As we pray,

  169. do not be surprised to find out

  170. that you are the answer to your prayers.

  171. Look at the very next words of Jesus

  172. in verse 3.

  173. Ask the Lord of the harvest,

  174. send out more harvest workers.

  175. Go, I am sending you.

  176. See, the first thing Jesus follows to do

  177. is to pray,

  178. but then right away,

  179. Jesus sends the 72 out.

  180. Instant answer to prayer.

  181. Jesus is saying,

  182. you are the answers to your prayers.

  183. You are the harvest workers

  184. that I am sending out.

  185. Let's think about that for a moment.

  186. Jesus asks Jesus 72

  187. to pray to the Lord of the harvest

  188. to send out harvest workers.

  189. Then Jesus says,

  190. go, I am sending you.

  191. What does that tell us?

  192. Jesus is the Lord of the harvest.

  193. Jesus is the one who sends.

  194. Now why does that matter?

  195. Well, because as we go out

  196. as followers of Jesus,

  197. as we pray and as we go,

  198. what happens?

  199. We keep praying for more harvest workers.

  200. Lord of the harvest,

  201. send out more harvest workers.

  202. Lord of the harvest,

  203. send out more harvest workers.

  204. And what happens?

  205. Jesus keeps answering that prayer.

  206. He keeps raising up

  207. more harvest workers.

  208. What does that tell us?

  209. Our mission will be a success

  210. because of him who sends us.

  211. As we go out there,

  212. we are going to see gospel fruits.

  213. As we go out there,

  214. we are going to watch

  215. more harvest workers

  216. be raised up by Christ.

  217. Now we may not see that

  218. in the immediate sense.

  219. I hope that we do sometimes.

  220. God is very gracious

  221. and lets us experience the joy

  222. of seeing that firsthand.

  223. But when we get to eternity,

  224. when we get to heaven,

  225. then we will really see

  226. the fruits of our labors

  227. because of Christ.

  228. Now this isn't going to be easy.

  229. There is going to be opposition.

  230. Look at how Jesus describes them

  231. when they're sent out.

  232. Go, I am sending you out

  233. like lambs among wolves.

  234. Great.

  235. Fantastic.

  236. I'm sending like a vulnerable lamb

  237. to a pack of wolves

  238. so I'll get my club and my spear.

  239. Jesus goes,

  240. no, no, no, no, no.

  241. Forget your club spear.

  242. In fact, forget your purse,

  243. your bag and your sandals too.

  244. Just leave them aside.

  245. Can you imagine

  246. the disciples' faces?

  247. Right.

  248. Leave all that behind,

  249. but I'm going to need money

  250. to pay for accommodation and food.

  251. Jesus goes, no, no, no,

  252. you won't.

  253. No, you won't.

  254. You won't need that.

  255. Leave it behind.

  256. Imagine for a moment

  257. that I came this morning

  258. with three boxes.

  259. One marked purses.

  260. One marked bags.

  261. One marked shoes.

  262. I left them at the door

  263. and said,

  264. Gabriel called to go

  265. on your way out

  266. if you'd be so kind.

  267. Leave your purses,

  268. bags and shoes behind.

  269. Imagine your faces.

  270. What I think

  271. what Jesus is trying to say here

  272. or what he is saying here

  273. is that there's an urgency

  274. to this mission.

  275. Jesus is telling the 72

  276. do not get weighed down

  277. by earthly possessions

  278. when there are people's

  279. eternity at stake.

  280. Get on with it.

  281. Just go.

  282. And we see that

  283. at the end of verse 4 as well.

  284. Jesus instructs his followers

  285. not to greet anyone on the road.

  286. And otherwise he's saying,

  287. don't dilly dally.

  288. Heard that phrase,

  289. don't dilly dally?

  290. When I was younger,

  291. going to primary school,

  292. I used to go in

  293. for one of my friends

  294. at her house.

  295. And she lived

  296. with her grandparents.

  297. And every time

  298. we left the grandparents' house

  299. after I picked her up,

  300. the last words

  301. our granny always said to us,

  302. get straight to school

  303. and don't dilly dally.

  304. Just get straight there.

  305. And that's what Jesus

  306. is saying here.

  307. Don't need dilly dally.

  308. Just go.

  309. Leave behind

  310. earthly possessions.

  311. Don't get distracted

  312. on the way.

  313. Go out there.

  314. People's eternity

  315. is at stake.

  316. There is a great need

  317. so there's a great urgency

  318. to meet that need.

  319. And what Jesus

  320. is also teaching

  321. his followers here

  322. is that

  323. they can leave behind

  324. all this stuff

  325. because he

  326. is the one

  327. who is sending them.

  328. I am all you need.

  329. I will provide

  330. for you as you go.

  331. You don't need money

  332. because I will provide

  333. food and accommodation

  334. for you.

  335. We see that in verse 7

  336. where they're welcomed in.

  337. Verse 8.

  338. They eat the food

  339. given to them.

  340. They've got roof

  341. over their heads.

  342. Yes, Jesus says,

  343. you may be like lambs

  344. sent into a pack of wolves

  345. but do not fear

  346. because not only

  347. will I provide for you,

  348. I will also protect you.

  349. Come with me quickly

  350. to just verse 19.

  351. Verse 19,

  352. Jesus says,

  353. I have given you

  354. authority,

  355. that's I have given

  356. the 72,

  357. authority to trample

  358. on snakes and scorpions

  359. and to overcome

  360. all the power

  361. of the enemy.

  362. Nothing will harm you.

  363. Now in the original Greek,

  364. this nothing will harm you

  365. phrase is emphasized.

  366. It's an emphatic position.

  367. It literally jumps out

  368. the page to you

  369. as you read it.

  370. nothing will harm you.

  371. Now,

  372. does this mean

  373. that as followers of Jesus

  374. we are not going to be harmed

  375. in any way?

  376. No,

  377. it doesn't.

  378. Just look at Acts,

  379. the sequel to Luke's gospel

  380. and that will quickly rid you

  381. of any notion

  382. that followers of Jesus

  383. are left unharmed.

  384. This verse does not teach us

  385. that we can start

  386. jumping off cliffs for Christ

  387. or run into a wolf's enclosure.

  388. I grew up in a small town

  389. called Girvan

  390. on the southwest coast

  391. of Scotland

  392. and there was this lovely,

  393. godly lady

  394. in the church

  395. who refused to wear

  396. a seatbelt

  397. because she said,

  398. Jesus is with me.

  399. It's okay.

  400. When my time has come,

  401. my time has come.

  402. I don't need a seatbelt

  403. to protect me.

  404. I've got Jesus.

  405. Now,

  406. there's something

  407. wonderfully admirable

  408. about her faith

  409. but at the same time,

  410. God gave us a seatbelt

  411. for a reason,

  412. didn't he?

  413. To try and protect us.

  414. It doesn't mean

  415. to be stupid

  416. and just run into fields

  417. of scorpions and snakes

  418. or defy the laws of gravity.

  419. No,

  420. that's not what Jesus

  421. is teaching here.

  422. To find out what Jesus means,

  423. we've got to look

  424. at the context.

  425. Coming to verse 18,

  426. Jesus says,

  427. I saw Satan fall

  428. like lightning from heaven.

  429. Wow.

  430. There's a statement

  431. and a half,

  432. isn't it?

  433. I saw Jesus

  434. fall like lightning

  435. from heaven.

  436. See,

  437. the context of verse 19

  438. is the fall of Satan,

  439. which I think

  440. is more to do

  441. with the defeat of Satan

  442. rather than his actual

  443. fall from heaven.

  444. And Jesus gives

  445. his disciples

  446. the authority

  447. to trample on snakes

  448. and scorpions.

  449. Now,

  450. again,

  451. does this mean

  452. that as followers

  453. of Jesus,

  454. we can go and take on

  455. the racing snakes

  456. in planet Earth too?

  457. Does this mean

  458. that David Attenborough

  459. needs only employ

  460. followers of Jesus

  461. because they're immune

  462. from all nature,

  463. biting them or killing them

  464. or eating them?

  465. No,

  466. it doesn't.

  467. Apart from Paul,

  468. the apostle Paul,

  469. in Acts,

  470. where was it?

  471. Yeah,

  472. Acts 28,

  473. where Paul was bitten

  474. by a snake,

  475. but left unharmed.

  476. Apart from that,

  477. there is no literal

  478. fulfillment of this promise

  479. found anywhere in the Bible.

  480. instead,

  481. the scorpions

  482. and the serpents

  483. represent Satan's power.

  484. They represent

  485. the hostile creation.

  486. And the 72

  487. are now protected

  488. from that

  489. because of the authority

  490. of Jesus

  491. that he has given

  492. to them.

  493. Nothing will harm them

  494. because I have authority

  495. over all things.

  496. Nothing will harm me

  497. because I've given you

  498. this authority

  499. to trample on

  500. Satan's power

  501. and hostile creation.

  502. Can we see that?

  503. So the Lord of the harvest

  504. has not only sent us,

  505. but he'll provide for us

  506. and he'll protect us

  507. as we fully depend on him.

  508. And at the end of the day,

  509. if we truly believe

  510. in the sovereignty of Christ,

  511. then we can afford

  512. to take the unavoidable risk

  513. when we go out on mission.

  514. Rather than spend

  515. our earthly lives asking,

  516. well, what if this happens?

  517. What if that happens?

  518. What if that thing happens?

  519. We can say,

  520. it doesn't matter.

  521. Jesus is with me.

  522. He'll protect me.

  523. He'll provide for me

  524. as I go on mission for him.

  525. Let's just get on with it.

  526. That's the first thing.

  527. Followers of Jesus

  528. pray and go.

  529. Second thing,

  530. followers of Jesus

  531. also proclaim the good news.

  532. What are the 72 to do

  533. when they're sent on mission?

  534. Come with me to verse 8.

  535. When you enter a town

  536. and are welcomed,

  537. eat what is offered to you.

  538. Heal the sick who are there

  539. and tell them,

  540. the kingdom of God

  541. has come near to you.

  542. The kingdom of God

  543. has come near to you.

  544. What does that mean?

  545. Well,

  546. the kingdom of God

  547. is when God's people

  548. enjoy God's blessing

  549. under God's rule.

  550. The kingdom of God

  551. has come near.

  552. The kingdom of God

  553. has come near.

  554. The kingdom of God

  555. has come near.

  556. Kingdom of God

  557. has come near.

  558. How has that come near?

  559. How on earth?

  560. What does that mean?

  561. Well,

  562. again,

  563. the context will help us out.

  564. The 72,

  565. we're sent ahead of Jesus.

  566. Remember where Jesus is going

  567. to Jerusalem?

  568. His betrayal,

  569. arrest,

  570. death,

  571. resurrection,

  572. exaltation.

  573. And see,

  574. Jesus,

  575. if I do know this,

  576. is the one who's going

  577. to bring in God's kingdom,

  578. God's people

  579. enjoying God's blessing

  580. under God's rule

  581. because he is God's

  582. chosen king.

  583. God's rule and power

  584. and deliverance

  585. is coming.

  586. That does not mean to say

  587. it has arrived

  588. in its fullness now.

  589. No,

  590. there's going to be

  591. a further fulfillment

  592. to come.

  593. But what it does mean

  594. is that the rule of God

  595. through Jesus

  596. as his king

  597. has begun.

  598. So when the disciples say,

  599. look,

  600. the kingdom of God

  601. has drawn near,

  602. what they're actually saying

  603. is, look,

  604. he is near.

  605. Jesus,

  606. the one who's going

  607. to bring in God's kingdom

  608. where God's people

  609. enjoy God's blessing

  610. under God's rule

  611. is near.

  612. Look,

  613. here he comes now.

  614. He has drawn near.

  615. That's what they are

  616. to proclaim.

  617. The good news

  618. is that Christ

  619. has come.

  620. God's chosen king

  621. promised from the

  622. beginning of time

  623. has arrived.

  624. The good news.

  625. And you also noticed

  626. that 72

  627. are to heal the sick.

  628. And we don't have time

  629. to get into

  630. a discussion about

  631. whether the gift

  632. of Merax's healing

  633. still happens today,

  634. whether this is a mandate

  635. for us to go

  636. into royal infirmation

  637. and heal the sick there.

  638. That's for another time.

  639. But what I want us to see

  640. is a purpose

  641. of healing the sick.

  642. Why are they

  643. to heal the sick?

  644. Well, the healing

  645. backs up the message

  646. that the kingdom of God

  647. has drawn near.

  648. The healing

  649. is a representation

  650. of the blessings

  651. experienced by those

  652. in God's kingdom.

  653. No suffering.

  654. No pain.

  655. No illness

  656. in the kingdom of God.

  657. One of the many blessings

  658. that we have.

  659. The healing

  660. is a physical sign

  661. of the compassion

  662. that God has

  663. for these people.

  664. It gives an authority

  665. and authenticity

  666. to the message

  667. of the 72.

  668. But one thing

  669. we must note.

  670. Healing

  671. in and of itself

  672. does not save.

  673. Only spiritual healing

  674. can do that.

  675. No amount of healing

  676. or miracles

  677. will bring salvation

  678. to those

  679. who reject the message.

  680. because only

  681. in the message

  682. which is God's word

  683. can we find life.

  684. Jesus says,

  685. the words I've spoken

  686. to you

  687. they're full

  688. of the spirit

  689. and life.

  690. His disciples

  691. say to him,

  692. you have the words

  693. of eternal life.

  694. Healing does not save,

  695. God's word saves.

  696. So when we proclaim

  697. God's word

  698. and if we show

  699. God's compassion

  700. in a concrete

  701. physical way,

  702. this word

  703. takes on a dimension

  704. that it otherwise

  705. might lack.

  706. It attracts people

  707. to the gospel.

  708. It attracts people

  709. to Christ.

  710. That's why I think

  711. as followers of Jesus

  712. we should be engaged

  713. in, for example,

  714. helping the poor,

  715. food banks,

  716. alleviating the suffering

  717. of those around us.

  718. But we must always

  719. remember that

  720. as we do so,

  721. we must always,

  722. always,

  723. always back up

  724. our actions

  725. with our words.

  726. We must always

  727. tell people

  728. why we do this.

  729. We must always

  730. tell people

  731. of the good news

  732. because if we don't,

  733. we may as well

  734. be a good Muslim.

  735. We may as well

  736. be a compassionate

  737. atheist.

  738. We may as well

  739. just be a friendly

  740. neighbor.

  741. We must always

  742. back up our words,

  743. back up our actions

  744. with our words

  745. because if we fail

  746. to share the gospel,

  747. we may be soothing

  748. their immediate

  749. suffering,

  750. but we are doing

  751. nothing to alleviate

  752. their eternal

  753. suffering.

  754. And that is a tragedy.

  755. Now Jesus is very

  756. upfront with the 72.

  757. He tells them

  758. that when they go,

  759. they are going

  760. to face opposition.

  761. They are going

  762. to be rejected.

  763. Notice,

  764. in verse 8 and 10,

  765. there are no

  766. ifs and maybes,

  767. but only whens

  768. and ours.

  769. So when you enter

  770. a town and when

  771. you are rejected,

  772. here's what you do.

  773. It's not if or maybe,

  774. it's when.

  775. Jesus tells them

  776. what to do

  777. in verses 8 and 10.

  778. The first time says,

  779. go on the streets

  780. if you're rejected,

  781. a very public place.

  782. Shake the dust

  783. off your feet

  784. and move on.

  785. Notice the message

  786. doesn't change.

  787. They start to proclaim

  788. the kingdom of God

  789. has drawn near.

  790. So it doesn't matter

  791. if we accept

  792. or reject

  793. the message.

  794. The message is still

  795. the same.

  796. It's not dependent

  797. on what we do

  798. with that.

  799. God's kingdom

  800. is going to come.

  801. The shaking of dusk,

  802. symbolic.

  803. This city now

  804. stands alone

  805. against God.

  806. And that's not

  807. a place you want

  808. to be.

  809. Jesus gives us

  810. examples of what

  811. fate awaits

  812. the towns that

  813. reject God's message

  814. in verse 12 and 15.

  815. Come with me

  816. to verse 12.

  817. I tell you,

  818. it will be more

  819. bearable on that

  820. day for Sodom

  821. than for that town.

  822. Now,

  823. Sodom was one

  824. of the most

  825. wicked towns

  826. in the Old Testament.

  827. And it was a town

  828. that got turned

  829. to dust

  830. because of its sin.

  831. But it will be

  832. more bearable

  833. for Sodom

  834. than for these

  835. towns who reject

  836. your message now.

  837. for Tyre and Sidon

  838. as well,

  839. two towns

  840. in the Old Testament.

  841. They would have

  842. repented

  843. if the miracles

  844. had performed

  845. there that are now

  846. performed in your

  847. towns and cities.

  848. So woe to these

  849. cities that reject

  850. Jesus' message.

  851. Woe to them

  852. on the day of judgment.

  853. That's what it means

  854. by on that day,

  855. on the day of the Lord.

  856. Healing does not save

  857. because word saves.

  858. If we reject

  859. God's word,

  860. then that is very

  861. serious indeed.

  862. Because the message

  863. that the followers

  864. of Jesus proclaim

  865. is a matter of

  866. life and death.

  867. If you're not

  868. a follower of Jesus

  869. here today,

  870. can you hear

  871. the warning

  872. of Jesus?

  873. You do not want

  874. to be

  875. standing alone

  876. against God.

  877. You do not want

  878. to,

  879. Jesus say to you,

  880. woe to you

  881. on the day of judgment.

  882. Capernaum,

  883. lift you to the heavens,

  884. no,

  885. cast down to hell.

  886. If you're

  887. sitting today

  888. and you're rejecting

  889. this message

  890. of the wonderful

  891. message of the

  892. kingdom of God

  893. has drawn near

  894. in Christ,

  895. oh please,

  896. repent of your sin

  897. and run to him.

  898. Hell is not

  899. a place you want

  900. to be.

  901. Stand alone

  902. against God

  903. is not a place

  904. you want to be.

  905. Do you see that?

  906. Can you hear

  907. the warning

  908. of Christ?

  909. See,

  910. to reject

  911. this message,

  912. you're not

  913. rejecting 72.

  914. You're not

  915. rejecting those

  916. who tell you

  917. the gospel.

  918. You're rejecting

  919. Jesus Christ himself.

  920. And if you're

  921. rejecting Jesus Christ,

  922. you're rejecting

  923. the Father.

  924. You're rejecting

  925. God when you

  926. reject this message.

  927. You are aligning

  928. yourself with

  929. the enemy of God,

  930. Satan.

  931. There is no

  932. middle ground.

  933. There is no

  934. sitting on fences.

  935. There's only two ways.

  936. You're with God

  937. or you're against him.

  938. I hope that you

  939. see that and you

  940. run to Christ

  941. to find salvation.

  942. Because see,

  943. to accept the

  944. message is to

  945. accept Jesus

  946. and therefore God.

  947. To accept God's

  948. decept eternal life

  949. and that's to

  950. become permanent

  951. citizens of heaven,

  952. which brings me

  953. to my third point.

  954. Followers of

  955. Jesus rejoice.

  956. 72 return

  957. ecstatic from

  958. their mission

  959. in verse 17.

  960. And they are

  961. joyful because

  962. even demons

  963. submit to us

  964. in your name,

  965. Lord.

  966. How amazing

  967. is that?

  968. Oh,

  969. to experience

  970. the power,

  971. the authority

  972. that you have

  973. and even demons

  974. submit to us.

  975. Oh,

  976. fills us with joy.

  977. But notice

  978. what Jesus

  979. says next.

  980. Let's go to

  981. verse 17 together.

  982. In return,

  983. even demons

  984. submit to your

  985. name.

  986. Jesus replies,

  987. I saw Satan

  988. fall like lightning

  989. from heaven.

  990. It's almost like

  991. he's playing a game

  992. of top trumps,

  993. isn't he?

  994. Demons

  995. submit to your

  996. name?

  997. I saw Satan.

  998. The head of demons

  999. fall from heaven.

  1000. From heaven,

  1001. I've given you

  1002. authority to

  1003. overcome scorpions

  1004. snakes.

  1005. We've looked at

  1006. that.

  1007. Nothing's going

  1008. to harm you.

  1009. Verse 20,

  1010. however,

  1011. do not rejoice

  1012. that the spirit

  1013. submit to you,

  1014. but rejoice

  1015. that your names

  1016. are written

  1017. in heaven.

  1018. That is a

  1019. greater joy

  1020. than demons

  1021. and spiritual forces

  1022. submitting to you

  1023. in Christ's name.

  1024. That your name

  1025. is written

  1026. in heaven.

  1027. Now,

  1028. the Greek

  1029. used here

  1030. means that

  1031. when your name

  1032. is written

  1033. in heaven,

  1034. it remains

  1035. written in heaven.

  1036. It is recorded

  1037. forever.

  1038. When your name

  1039. is up there,

  1040. you are now

  1041. a permanent

  1042. citizen of heaven.

  1043. Nothing

  1044. can take that

  1045. from you.

  1046. That is our

  1047. reason to

  1048. rejoice.

  1049. We are to

  1050. keep on

  1051. continually

  1052. rejoicing in

  1053. our salvation

  1054. because our

  1055. permanent

  1056. citizenship

  1057. means that we

  1058. will one day

  1059. dwell with God

  1060. in a place

  1061. where there is

  1062. abundant

  1063. blessings.

  1064. We will see

  1065. our Lord and

  1066. Saviour Jesus

  1067. Christ face

  1068. to face.

  1069. We will be

  1070. transformed into

  1071. his likeness.

  1072. We will reign

  1073. as co-heirs

  1074. with Christ.

  1075. Yes,

  1076. it is a

  1077. privilege to

  1078. be used by

  1079. God in

  1080. mission and

  1081. to have

  1082. access to

  1083. his power

  1084. and authority.

  1085. That is

  1086. exciting.

  1087. But the

  1088. real cause

  1089. for us to

  1090. rejoice is

  1091. that we have

  1092. the sheer

  1093. privilege of

  1094. entry into

  1095. the kingdom

  1096. of God.

  1097. And as

  1098. a 72

  1099. rejoice,

  1100. so too

  1101. does Jesus

  1102. rejoice.

  1103. In

  1104. verse 21,

  1105. we have this

  1106. wonderful picture

  1107. of a triune

  1108. prayer.

  1109. The Son,

  1110. filled with the

  1111. Holy Spirit,

  1112. praying to

  1113. his Father.

  1114. Now,

  1115. what's it

  1116. they're praying

  1117. about?

  1118. It's the

  1119. free,

  1120. electing love

  1121. of God,

  1122. to hide

  1123. things from

  1124. intellectual and

  1125. reveal them

  1126. to babes.

  1127. Verse 21,

  1128. I praise you,

  1129. Father,

  1130. Lord of heaven

  1131. and earth,

  1132. because you

  1133. have hidden

  1134. these things

  1135. from the

  1136. wise and

  1137. learned and

  1138. revealed them

  1139. to the

  1140. little children.

  1141. Yes,

  1142. Father,

  1143. for that is

  1144. what you're

  1145. pleased to do.

  1146. This does

  1147. not mean

  1148. that your

  1149. educational

  1150. attainment

  1151. matters.

  1152. It does

  1153. not mean

  1154. that if

  1155. you've got

  1156. a doctorate

  1157. then somehow

  1158. you're

  1159. hidden from

  1160. seeing these

  1161. revealed

  1162. things.

  1163. No.

  1164. Jesus is

  1165. thanking God

  1166. that he's

  1167. revealed these

  1168. things to

  1169. those who

  1170. come to

  1171. God in

  1172. humble

  1173. dependence,

  1174. just like

  1175. a child.

  1176. It's wonderful

  1177. being here,

  1178. by the way,

  1179. because there's

  1180. hundreds of

  1181. kids.

  1182. See,

  1183. you must

  1184. have had a

  1185. baby boom

  1186. like two

  1187. years ago,

  1188. by the way.

  1189. So many

  1190. toddlers

  1191. going about

  1192. right now,

  1193. it's wonderful.

  1194. But notice how

  1195. needy,

  1196. how dependent

  1197. these toddlers

  1198. are.

  1199. They need

  1200. you as

  1201. parents,

  1202. as grandparents,

  1203. as aunts,

  1204. uncles,

  1205. as friends,

  1206. to look after

  1207. these kids.

  1208. Without you,

  1209. they've got no

  1210. hope whatsoever

  1211. of surviving.

  1212. They need

  1213. you.

  1214. And that's

  1215. what Jesus

  1216. is saying

  1217. here.

  1218. He's rejoicing

  1219. the truth

  1220. got to the

  1221. ones who

  1222. recognize their

  1223. needs,

  1224. that recognize

  1225. they're like

  1226. little children,

  1227. rather than the

  1228. wise and

  1229. learned who

  1230. think that

  1231. they're good

  1232. enough,

  1233. that they're

  1234. intellectual

  1235. enough,

  1236. they're wise

  1237. enough for

  1238. salvation.

  1239. No.

  1240. Rock of

  1241. Ages,

  1242. that great

  1243. hymn,

  1244. nothing in

  1245. my hand I

  1246. bring,

  1247. simply to

  1248. the cross

  1249. I cling,

  1250. naked,

  1251. come to

  1252. thee for

  1253. dress,

  1254. helpless,

  1255. come to

  1256. thee for

  1257. grace,

  1258. foul I

  1259. to the

  1260. fountain fly,

  1261. wash me

  1262. savior,

  1263. or I

  1264. die.

  1265. Can't get

  1266. more needy

  1267. than that,

  1268. can you?

  1269. And we

  1270. also see Jesus

  1271. rejoice that he

  1272. is a revealer

  1273. of the

  1274. father,

  1275. verse 22.

  1276. All things

  1277. have been

  1278. committed to

  1279. me by my

  1280. father,

  1281. no one

  1282. who knows

  1283. the son,

  1284. no one

  1285. knows the

  1286. son except

  1287. the father,

  1288. and no one

  1289. knows who

  1290. the father

  1291. is except

  1292. the son,

  1293. and those

  1294. to whom

  1295. the son

  1296. chooses to

  1297. reveal him.

  1298. It's a bit

  1299. bit of it,

  1300. isn't it?

  1301. But the

  1302. point here in

  1303. this verse,

  1304. notice that

  1305. the father and

  1306. son are

  1307. mentioned three

  1308. times here.

  1309. What's in

  1310. show is the

  1311. intimate

  1312. relationship between

  1313. the father and

  1314. son.

  1315. Okay,

  1316. and this

  1317. shows us

  1318. that the

  1319. father's

  1320. authority,

  1321. sovereignty,

  1322. and revelation

  1323. are all tied

  1324. to and reside

  1325. in Jesus

  1326. Christ,

  1327. the father's

  1328. heir.

  1329. The father

  1330. reveals the

  1331. son,

  1332. the son

  1333. reveals the

  1334. father.

  1335. What does

  1336. this mean?

  1337. This means

  1338. that Jesus

  1339. is everything

  1340. for salvation.

  1341. Not only is

  1342. Jesus our

  1343. king,

  1344. not only is he

  1345. the redeemer,

  1346. the saviour,

  1347. the keeper,

  1348. Jesus is

  1349. also the

  1350. revealer.

  1351. Without

  1352. Jesus,

  1353. we have

  1354. nothing.

  1355. With

  1356. Jesus,

  1357. we have

  1358. everything.

  1359. And remember,

  1360. this is a

  1361. Jesus who

  1362. sends us

  1363. out into

  1364. his mission.

  1365. The time

  1366. is almost

  1367. up,

  1368. but I've

  1369. been talking

  1370. a lot about

  1371. how we're

  1372. called to

  1373. go,

  1374. and I

  1375. began by

  1376. thinking we

  1377. may have

  1378. this feeling

  1379. of a sense

  1380. of duty

  1381. after hearing

  1382. a sermon

  1383. like this.

  1384. like we

  1385. go because

  1386. in the same

  1387. way we

  1388. think about

  1389. going and

  1390. doing household

  1391. chores,

  1392. we have to

  1393. do it,

  1394. so therefore

  1395. let's do

  1396. it.

  1397. But I

  1398. hope that

  1399. we can be

  1400. captured by

  1401. the beauty

  1402. of Christ,

  1403. our

  1404. revealer,

  1405. our

  1406. redeemer,

  1407. our king,

  1408. our saviour,

  1409. our keeper,

  1410. because there

  1411. is a great

  1412. joy,

  1413. there is

  1414. incredible

  1415. blessings,

  1416. and it's a

  1417. wonderful

  1418. privilege to

  1419. be sent by

  1420. Christ on

  1421. mission.

  1422. Ask yourself

  1423. this question,

  1424. does God

  1425. need you?

  1426. Does God

  1427. need you to

  1428. go for him

  1429. to make

  1430. disciples of

  1431. all nations?

  1432. No,

  1433. he doesn't.

  1434. God's God,

  1435. creator of all

  1436. things,

  1437. the almighty,

  1438. everlasting God,

  1439. the sovereign

  1440. God,

  1441. he can do

  1442. all things.

  1443. He doesn't

  1444. need you.

  1445. What do we

  1446. bring to the

  1447. table?

  1448. Nothing,

  1449. except what he

  1450. has already

  1451. given to us.

  1452. God could

  1453. easily have

  1454. chosen a

  1455. different way

  1456. to do

  1457. things,

  1458. but he

  1459. didn't.

  1460. He chose

  1461. us to be

  1462. sent by

  1463. him to

  1464. go and

  1465. proclaim the

  1466. good news.

  1467. Have you

  1468. ever thought

  1469. about that?

  1470. See,

  1471. I think that

  1472. when we

  1473. pray,

  1474. when we

  1475. go,

  1476. when we

  1477. proclaim the

  1478. good news,

  1479. not only are

  1480. we giving

  1481. glory to

  1482. God,

  1483. but we

  1484. also get to

  1485. experience the

  1486. joy,

  1487. the blessing,

  1488. the privilege

  1489. as being sent

  1490. for us of

  1491. Christ.

  1492. Other than

  1493. your name

  1494. being written

  1495. in heaven,

  1496. can you

  1497. think of

  1498. a greater

  1499. joy than

  1500. seeing someone

  1501. pass from

  1502. death to

  1503. life before

  1504. your very

  1505. eyes?

  1506. From

  1507. whence in

  1508. someone going

  1509. from dead

  1510. in their

  1511. sins to

  1512. life in

  1513. Christ,

  1514. without hope,

  1515. to be filled

  1516. with hope,

  1517. to be under

  1518. the wrath of

  1519. God,

  1520. to be filled

  1521. by the

  1522. presence of

  1523. God.

  1524. It's a

  1525. great joy

  1526. when you see

  1527. that happening.

  1528. And we

  1529. get to

  1530. witness the

  1531. blessings of

  1532. the eternal

  1533. kingdom of

  1534. God being

  1535. worked out

  1536. before our

  1537. very eyes.

  1538. We see

  1539. God working

  1540. at building

  1541. his eternal

  1542. kingdom.

  1543. That's why

  1544. Jesus says

  1545. in verse

  1546. 23,

  1547. blessed are

  1548. the eyes

  1549. that see

  1550. what you

  1551. see.

  1552. You're

  1553. blessed because

  1554. of what you

  1555. see.

  1556. You're blessed

  1557. because of

  1558. what you

  1559. hear.

  1560. See,

  1561. the disciples

  1562. are witnessing

  1563. the culmination

  1564. of God's

  1565. salvation plan

  1566. that began

  1567. before time

  1568. itself.

  1569. And ever

  1570. since the

  1571. creation of

  1572. the world,

  1573. kings and

  1574. prophets have

  1575. seen glimpses

  1576. of God's

  1577. salvation.

  1578. They have

  1579. seen shadows

  1580. of a coming

  1581. Messiah.

  1582. They have

  1583. seen shadows

  1584. of a coming

  1585. king.

  1586. But now,

  1587. the disciples

  1588. see these

  1589. shadows

  1590. becoming

  1591. reality.

  1592. Satan is

  1593. defeated

  1594. before their

  1595. very eyes.

  1596. God,

  1597. a Christ,

  1598. the Messiah,

  1599. the Son of

  1600. God is

  1601. standing before

  1602. them.

  1603. They are

  1604. soon to

  1605. see his

  1606. death,

  1607. resurrection,

  1608. exaltation.

  1609. They are

  1610. soon to

  1611. see the

  1612. coming of

  1613. the kingdom

  1614. of God.

  1615. They no

  1616. longer see

  1617. shadows,

  1618. but they

  1619. see the

  1620. light

  1621. himself.

  1622. Jesus

  1623. Christ says,

  1624. I am the

  1625. light of

  1626. the world.

  1627. No more

  1628. shadows.

  1629. I am

  1630. here.

  1631. As

  1632. followers of

  1633. Christ,

  1634. that's what

  1635. we see

  1636. today.

  1637. We've

  1638. seen Jesus

  1639. come.

  1640. We know

  1641. he's died

  1642. for us upon

  1643. that cross.

  1644. We know

  1645. he's raised

  1646. back to life,

  1647. exalted to

  1648. heaven.

  1649. We know

  1650. Satan has

  1651. been defeated.

  1652. We know

  1653. the kingdom

  1654. of God

  1655. is coming

  1656. near and

  1657. has come

  1658. near.

  1659. What

  1660. privilege,

  1661. what blessing

  1662. to see that,

  1663. to see the

  1664. light himself.

  1665. And we

  1666. get the

  1667. privilege of

  1668. being used

  1669. by the

  1670. almighty

  1671. creator God

  1672. in his

  1673. redemption

  1674. plan.

  1675. Brothers and

  1676. sisters,

  1677. what a great

  1678. joy,

  1679. what a wonderful

  1680. blessing,

  1681. what an

  1682. incredible

  1683. privilege it

  1684. is to be

  1685. sent by

  1686. Christ.

  1687. Jesus

  1688. says,

  1689. the harvest

  1690. is plentiful

  1691. but the

  1692. workers are

  1693. few.

  1694. Ask the

  1695. Lord of the

  1696. harvest,

  1697. therefore,

  1698. to send

  1699. workers into

  1700. his harvest

  1701. field.

  1702. Go,

  1703. I am

  1704. sending

  1705. you.

  1706. Let's

  1707. pray.

  1708. Our

  1709. loving,

  1710. glorious,

  1711. heavenly

  1712. Father,

  1713. oh,

  1714. what joy

  1715. is ours,

  1716. what blessings

  1717. are ours,

  1718. what privilege

  1719. belong to

  1720. us as

  1721. being followers

  1722. of you.

  1723. Father,

  1724. we thank you

  1725. so much for

  1726. sending your

  1727. son.

  1728. We thank you

  1729. that he died

  1730. upon the

  1731. cross for

  1732. our sins,

  1733. so that

  1734. whoever may

  1735. believe in

  1736. him may

  1737. have life

  1738. in his

  1739. name.

  1740. And we

  1741. thank you

  1742. that that

  1743. same Jesus,

  1744. our saviour,

  1745. our redeemer,

  1746. our Lord,

  1747. is the one

  1748. who now sends

  1749. us into the

  1750. mission field.

  1751. And Lord,

  1752. that makes

  1753. all the

  1754. difference.

  1755. We thank

  1756. you that he

  1757. provides for

  1758. us, that

  1759. you will

  1760. protect us.

  1761. And Lord,

  1762. we pray that

  1763. you will raise

  1764. up more

  1765. harvest workers

  1766. as we go.

  1767. Lord, the

  1768. harvests are

  1769. indeed plentiful.

  1770. And Lord,

  1771. we long to

  1772. see Edinburgh

  1773. save for

  1774. Christ.

  1775. We long to

  1776. see that when

  1777. we look out

  1778. upon Edinburgh

  1779. and see the

  1780. thousands of

  1781. people who

  1782. are right

  1783. now lost,

  1784. that they

  1785. will be brought

  1786. near to you.

  1787. That they

  1788. would accept

  1789. the message

  1790. of Christ.

  1791. They would

  1792. accept the

  1793. gospel and

  1794. therefore have

  1795. their names

  1796. written in

  1797. heaven along

  1798. with our

  1799. names.

  1800. Father, help

  1801. us keep an

  1802. eternal perspective

  1803. on our lives.

  1804. Father, help us

  1805. to focus on

  1806. what is to

  1807. come.

  1808. That one day

  1809. we will stand

  1810. there with

  1811. every tribe,

  1812. tongue, and

  1813. nation, glorifying

  1814. and honouring

  1815. your name before

  1816. your throne as

  1817. we see you

  1818. face to face.

  1819. Christ.

  1820. Oh, Father, may

  1821. that motivate us

  1822. today to go

  1823. out to make

  1824. even more

  1825. disciples so

  1826. our friends,

  1827. our families,

  1828. our work

  1829. colleagues, our

  1830. neighbours can

  1831. stand with us

  1832. as we worship

  1833. your holy name.

  1834. Help us, we

  1835. pray, to do so,

1836. Lord, not out of a

  1837. sense of duty, but

1838. of a love for you

1839. and of a sense of

  1840. great joy that you

  1841. have given us.

  1842. we ask this in

  1843. Jesus Christ's

  1844. precious name.

  1845. Amen.
