  1. Amen.

  2. Amen.

  3. As you can see, my name is Andy Constable,

  4. as it was just behind me.

  5. So I'm one of the pastors at Nidra Kimi Chesh.

  6. I've been here for, I've been at Brunsfield

  7. preaching the last three years, I think.

  8. So it's my fourth year.

  9. So it's very good to be with you.

  10. Just to share a little bit more about that video

  11. that you saw earlier.

  12. So 20 Schemes is our church planting

  13. and revitalization ministry of Nidra Community Church.

  14. It's not a separate organization.

  15. It's a ministry of Nidra Community Church.

  16. If you look across Scotland,

  17. we know in general that there's 2%

  18. who are claiming to be Christians in Scotland.

  19. I would say that that would be even less

  20. in the housing schemes and council states in Scotland.

  21. Churches are dying.

  22. in these places.

  23. And so a few years ago,

  24. as we were working in a deprived area,

  25. we thought, well, let's have a look at 50

  26. of the most deprived areas

  27. and see how many churches are in these areas.

  28. And we worked out, not very many at all.

  29. And so we thought, well, why don't we start

  30. an organization that specifically plants

  31. and revitalizes churches in those areas

  32. for the glory of Christ?

  33. And that's what we're doing.

  34. We have four church plants at the moment,

  35. one in Dundee, one in Glasgow,

  36. one in Grace Mount, which is South Edinburgh,

  37. and one just coming online in Aberdeen at the moment.

  38. And all we want to do is to see souls saved in these areas,

  39. like Tasha.

  40. So three or four years ago,

  41. she was, like you saw in the video,

  42. a mess, struggling in life.

  43. And the Lord saved her miraculously.

  44. And now she's our youth worker.

  45. She used to be the one terrorizing us,

  46. doing the youth work with her.

  47. Now she's saved and doing the youth work,

  48. which is a testament to God's grace, isn't it?

  49. And that's what we want to see across Scotland,

  50. more and more plants in poorer areas

  51. to the glory of Christ,

  52. and more souls will be saved.

  53. If you want to see more of the work,

  54. I know I'm not really supposed to be advertising 20 schemes.

  55. We're going to get into God's word in a minute.

  56. But if you want to see more of the work,

  57. 20schemes.com, there's videos, blogs,

  58. things you can look at there to find out more of the work.

  59. So let's pitch over.

  60. Let's get into God's words.

  61. We're in Titus 1 this evening, verse 5.

  62. So if you open up, we'll read, we'll pray,

  63. and then we'll get stuck in to God's words together.

  64. This is God's words.

  65. This is why I left you in Crete,

  66. so that you might put what remained into order

  67. and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.

  68. If anyone is above reproach,

  69. the husband of one wife and his children are believers

  70. and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination,

  71. for an overseer as God's steward must be above reproach.

  72. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered

  73. or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain.

  74. But hospitable, a lover of good,

  75. self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined,

  76. he must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught

  77. so that he might be able to give instruction

  78. in sound doctrine

  79. and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

  80. Amen?

  81. Big amen there.

  82. Amen?

  83. That's God's word.

  84. Amen.

  85. Let's pray.

  86. Amen.

  87. Dear Lord, thank you so much for your words.

  88. It is precious to us this evening.

  89. And when it's opened up and preached

  90. by the power of your spirit,

  91. you change and transform our lives.

  92. And so we pray, Lord,

  93. that you might send your spirit now.

  94. Help us to have ears to listen

  95. and hearts that are soft

  96. so we might glorify Christ and hear from him.

  97. In Jesus' name we pray.

  98. Amen.

  99. So leadership, I'm sure you'll agree with me,

  100. is important, isn't it, in any organisation?

  101. Whether that's business,

  102. whether that's sport,

  103. whether that's in the army,

  104. or whether that's in the church.

  105. So in business,

  106. if you have a good leader,

  107. then workers are happy

  108. and business generally booms.

  109. That's why leaders get paid the big bucks,

  110. don't they?

  111. In sport,

  112. if you have a good manager,

  113. again,

  114. the club flourishes,

  115. doesn't it,

  116. under their leadership.

  117. In war,

  118. your general is absolutely vital

  119. and can be the difference

  120. between winning a battle

  121. and losing.

  122. It can almost be

  123. the difference between life

  124. and death.

  125. Bad leadership,

  126. on the other hand,

  127. can mean a mess,

  128. can't it?

  129. Bad leadership

  130. can lead to corruption.

  131. Bad leadership

  132. can bring a whole organisation

  133. down in a matter of minutes,

  134. days.

  135. And while the same is true

  136. in the local church,

  137. the church needs

  138. good,

  139. godly elders

  140. to lead

  141. the church

  142. to the glory of Christ.

  143. If the leaders

  144. do not carry out

  145. the duties

  146. given to them

  147. by the Lord,

  148. then the church

  149. will crumble.

  150. It will be a mess.

  151. It will be

  152. unhealthy.

  153. And that's why

  154. early on in this letter,

  155. Paul instructs Titus

  156. to appoint elders

  157. in every town.

  158. Just look at verse 5 again.

  159. This is why

  160. I left you in Crete

  161. so that you might

  162. put what remained

  163. into order

  164. and appoint elders

  165. in every town

  166. as I

  167. directed you.

  168. Paul and Titus

  169. have been on this island

  170. preaching the

  171. gospel.

  172. They've seen converts.

  173. Paul obviously

  174. had to go away

  175. and he left Titus

  176. with this sole task

  177. of appointing elders

  178. to make sure

  179. the churches

  180. are in

  181. order.

  182. This is the reason

  183. he is left behind.

  184. To make sure

  185. the churches

  186. are in order

  187. with good,

  188. godly

  189. leaders.

  190. And this is a vital

  191. ministry because

  192. in verse 10

  193. Paul says

  194. there are false

  195. teachers on the

  196. prowl of the

  197. circumcision party.

  198. And Paul is saying

  199. here in these verses

  200. the way that we guard

  201. against heresy

  202. and false teaching

  203. is by the leaders

  204. that we appoint

  205. who will preach

  206. the gospel,

  207. who will refute

  208. heresy,

  209. and make sure

  210. that we are hearing

  211. sound

  212. doctrine.

  213. And I want us to

  214. notice in this text

  215. what kind of leaders

  216. Paul tells Titus

  217. he should appoint.

  218. It's striking in a way.

  219. He doesn't say

  220. I want a winning

  221. personality

  222. who's going to

  223. galvanise the troops.

  224. He doesn't want

  225. people who dress

  226. well in a nice suit

  227. who have a good

  228. business acumen.

  229. He doesn't say

  230. Titus should appoint

  231. people with super

  232. spiritual gifts

  233. or who are flashy

  234. or a celebrity

  235. pastor.

  236. But he says here

  237. men

  238. men of character.

  239. Men of character.

  240. Men

  241. with godly

  242. integrity.

  243. You see young men

  244. in our generation

  245. often get it twisted

  246. don't they?

  247. They think

  248. if they have a degree

  249. and they know

  250. the Greek word

  251. for chicken

  252. that they're ready

  253. for leadership.

  254. But Paul says

  255. it's the character

  256. of our lives

  257. that is most

  258. important.

  259. Yes we have to

  260. know our Bibles

  261. but we have to

  262. live out what

  263. we know in our

  264. lives don't we?

  265. We have to

  266. talk the talk

  267. but we've got to

  268. also walk

  269. the walk.

  270. It's vital.

  271. I mean leaders

  272. are often chosen

  273. by how good they

  274. are at attracting

  275. people around them

  276. because they're

  277. winning personalities.

  278. What Paul says

  279. here is by the

  280. attractive way

  281. that leaders

  282. live for Christ

  283. that people

  284. will follow them

  285. and give their

  286. allegiance to them

  287. and trust them.

  288. not just by

  289. cracking a few

  290. funnies in the

  291. pulpit

  292. but by godly

  293. integrity

  294. of their lives.

  295. And before we

  296. get into this

  297. some of you

  298. might be thinking

  299. this text

  300. and this sermon

  301. is only for elders

  302. so I can switch off

  303. or it's only for

  304. wannabe leaders here.

  305. You might be thinking

  306. I'm a woman here

  307. this has got nothing

  308. to do with me

  309. or I'm not interested

  310. in leadership

  311. and so I can

  312. switch off again

  313. from this text.

  314. But the characteristics

  315. in this list

  316. are all ones

  317. that we as a church

  318. should be striving for.

  319. These characteristics

  320. are all characteristics

  321. we should be seeing

  322. in our lives.

  323. They're not supernatural

  324. super spiritual

  325. character traits

  326. that only elders

  327. should have

  328. but ones that we

  329. as Christians

  330. should be known by.

  331. The standard

  332. of this list

  333. are the standards

  334. of Christianity

  335. in general.

  336. This list

  337. is basic

  338. Christianity.

  339. Nobody should be saying

  340. this list is just

  341. for elders.

  342. This is how we

  343. should all

  344. act

  345. and pay attention to.

  346. But this is the

  347. plumb line isn't it?

  348. This is the plumb line

  349. for us to judge

  350. who we should be

  351. appointing as elders

  352. and who we shouldn't.

  353. And as a church

  354. you need to know

  355. this list

  356. because you guys

  357. are going to be

  358. one of the appointing

  359. elders aren't you

  360. with the elders

  361. you have already.

  362. So you need to make sure

  363. the guys that are

  364. being appointed

  365. are in line

  366. with the list

  367. in the Bible

  368. and so we need to

  369. know it don't we

  370. as a church.

  371. So who should be

  372. appointed as elders?

  373. Just three headings

  374. for you.

  375. This evening

  376. I'll group them in.

  377. Firstly

  378. they have to be

  379. a godly head

  380. of the house.

  381. Secondly

  382. they have to be

  383. blameless

  384. and thirdly

  385. they have to teach

  386. sound doctrine.

  387. Godly head

  388. of the house

  389. blameless

  390. teach

  391. sound

  392. doctrine.

  393. Paul says

  394. immediately

  395. in verse 6

  396. if anyone's

  397. above approach

  398. he should be

  399. the husband

  400. of one

  401. wife.

  402. Let me first

  403. say here

  404. an obvious thing

  405. that eldership

  406. is male here

  407. it's not a wife

  408. of one husband

  409. but the husband

  410. of one wife

  411. and a woman

  412. can serve

  413. in every capacity

  414. in church

  415. I think

  416. except that

  417. of an elder

  418. overseer.

  419. And Paul says

  420. that if a man

  421. is married

  422. that he has

  423. to be

  424. a one

  425. woman

  426. man.

  427. A one

  428. woman man.

  429. Here's the thing

  430. every husband

  431. and especially

  432. an elder

  433. must be

  434. dedicated

  435. to his wife

  436. and love her

  437. well.

  438. This is so

  439. important.

  440. Many people

  441. run after

  442. leadership

  443. but their

  444. home lives

  445. are an absolute

  446. train wreck.

  447. They don't

  448. communicate

  449. within their

  450. marriage.

  451. There are

  452. constant

  453. arguments

  454. behind the

  455. scenes.

  456. But a

  457. leader's

  458. home

  459. should be

  460. his

  461. oasis.

  462. It should

  463. be a place

  464. of love

  465. and peace

  466. in the

  467. storms of

  468. life and

  469. ministry

  470. that is

  471. built on

  472. a good

  473. healthy

  474. solid

  475. marriage.

  476. Because

  477. marriage

  478. shows us

  479. who a

  480. man really

  481. is.

  482. What he

  483. loves

  484. how he

  485. leads.

  486. If you

  487. want to

  488. find out

  489. about the

  490. men in

  491. this

  492. church

  493. ask their

  494. wives.

  495. And they'll

  496. tell you

  497. what kind

  498. of man

  499. they are.

  500. And here's

  501. the thing

  502. if you're a

  503. leader this

  504. evening or

  505. want to be

  506. leader it's

  507. really for

  508. all of us.

  509. Too many

  510. leaders don't

  511. they love

  512. their ministries

  513. more than

  514. they love

  515. their wives.

  516. We need to

  517. love our

  518. wives more

  519. than we love

  520. our ministries.

  521. We need to

  522. serve them.

  523. We need to

  524. treat them

  525. well.

  526. We need to

  527. communicate and

  528. lead in a

  529. Christ honouring

  530. way.

  531. Our greatest

  532. ministry as

  533. men in this

  534. church is to

  535. lead our

  536. homes.

  537. If we aren't

  538. able to lead

  539. our homes we

  540. will not be in

  541. a position to

  542. lead a church

  543. or have any

  544. godly influence

  545. in it.

  546. He also says

  547. here that an

  548. elder must be a

  549. godly father to

  550. his children.

  551. Now verse 6

  552. is one of the

  553. most debated

  554. texts in the

  555. New Testament.

  556. Let me read it

  557. again.

  558. It says here

  559. if anyone is

  560. above reproach

  561. to the husband

  562. or the wife

  563. and his

  564. children are

  565. believers and

  566. not open to

  567. the charge of

  568. debauchery or

  569. insubordination.

  570. Now does that

  571. mean if your

  572. children aren't

  573. Christians that

  574. you cannot be an

  575. elder?

  576. It's the question

  577. that came to

  578. mind as I was

  579. reading this text.

  580. Does that mean

  581. if your children

  582. aren't Christians

  583. then you can't

  584. be an elder?

  585. Well I'm not

  586. sure if that's

  587. exactly what

  588. Paul is saying

  589. here.

  590. Let me tell you

  591. why.

  592. Three reasons.

  593. One, the verb

  594. here to believe,

  595. pista, is

  596. passive in the

  597. Greek and is

  598. better translated

  599. faithful, not

  600. of faith.

  601. Faithful, not

  602. of faith.

  603. Two, if you

  604. say it's just

  605. elders with

  606. believing children

  607. then you

  608. automatically

  609. disqualify half

  610. the church who

  611. might have young

  612. children because

  613. they're not

  614. Christians yet.

  615. It would mean

  616. that you could

  617. only appoint men

  618. who have

  619. children who

  620. are professing

  621. faith, who

  622. have been

  623. baptised and

  624. are showing

  625. evidence of

  626. walking in step

  627. with the

  628. spirit.

  629. It would mean

  630. you could only

  631. choose men who

  632. have children of

  633. a particular age

  634. bracket.

  635. Rule Graham and

  636. myself out who

  637. have under

  638. twos.

  639. We couldn't be

  640. elders.

  641. Our children

  642. aren't Christians

  643. yet.

  644. And three, I

  645. think it puts a

  646. crushing

  647. responsibility on the

  648. parents the

  649. scriptures doesn't

  650. warrant.

  651. A parent is

  652. not in charge

  653. of his sons

  654. and daughters

  655. salvation.

  656. Yes, they

  657. share the

  658. gospel with

  659. them.

  660. Yes, they

  661. model it in

  662. their home,

  663. but it's not

  664. God who

  665. saves.

  666. It's God's

  667. responsibility to

  668. soften the

  669. heart and

  670. convict the

  671. child of sin

  672. and his or

  673. her need for

  674. salvation.

  675. I think what

  676. Paul is saying

  677. here is that

  678. the character of

  679. the household

  680. should be a

  681. godly one.

  682. Does the

  683. man lead his

  684. children in

  685. the faith?

  686. Does he read

  687. the Bible with

  688. them?

  689. Has he passed

  690. on a Christian

  691. worldview?

  692. Are the

  693. children in

  694. church and

  695. under the

  696. word of

  697. God?

  698. They might

  699. reject the

  700. faith of

  701. their parents.

  702. They might

  703. wander off.

  704. They might

  705. not get

  706. converted

  707. straight away,

  708. but as the

  709. father and

  710. head of the

  711. house, is

  712. he bringing

  713. them up in

  714. the instruction

  715. and discipline

  716. of the

  717. Lord, a.k.a.

  718. Ephesians 6

    Ephesians 6:4

  719. verse 4.

  720. I think you

  721. see this, the

  722. outflow of

  723. this in the

  724. character of

  725. the children.

  726. The children

  727. of an elder,

  728. as Paul goes

  729. on to say,

  730. or a potential

  731. elder, should

  732. not be

  733. disobedient and

  734. wild.

  735. Does that

  736. mean if your

  737. toddler drops

  738. in the middle

  739. of a service

  740. that the man

  741. is disqualified?

  742. Does it

  743. mean if a

  744. child in the

  745. supermarkets

  746. throws a big

  747. shop, a

  748. strop, and

  749. throws his

  750. hands in the

  751. air, going

  752. he's disqualified

  753. from eldership?

  754. I don't think

  755. so again here.

  756. No, Paul is

  757. talking about

  758. wild, sinful

  759. behaviour.

  760. He's saying

  761. there should

  762. be order in

  763. his household.

  764. Kids can

  765. have fun,

  766. can't they?

  767. They'll put a

  768. straitjacket on

  769. our kids,

  770. do we?

  771. They'll have

  772. to be the

  773. Waltons.

  774. They'll mess

  775. up, they'll

  776. disobey their

  777. parents, but is

  778. the father

  779. leading his

  780. house with

  781. consistent

  782. discipline and

  783. consistent godly

  784. love?

  785. See again,

  786. here is the

  787. thing, if a

  788. man cannot

  789. lead his

  790. household, then

  791. how is he

  792. going to lead

  793. the church?

  794. It's not

  795. possible.

  796. A godly

  797. leader, if he

  798. has a family,

  799. must lead

  800. well in his

  801. home and

  802. be in

  803. private what

  804. he is in

  805. public.

  806. Again, if you

  807. want to choose

  808. godly leaders,

  809. do not look on

  810. a Sunday at

  811. a person and

  812. how they act

  813. and the words

  814. they use and

  815. how they dress.

  816. Look at

  817. them in

  818. their homes.

  819. We're choosing

  820. elders.

  821. The way we do

  822. it is that we

  823. get into

  824. people's lives.

  825. We go around

  826. to people's

  827. houses.

  828. We observe

  829. their marriages.

  830. We see how

  831. they interact

  832. with the

  833. children.

  834. Because you

  835. can hide

  836. things on a

  837. Sunday, can't

  838. you?

  839. But you

  840. cannot hide

  841. things at

  842. home.

  843. And we're

  844. good at that,

  845. aren't we, in

  846. Christian circles.

  847. We track a

  848. smile on a

  849. Sunday, everything's

  850. fine, nothing's

  851. going on in my

  852. life.

  853. And yet, back

  854. at home,

  855. everything's a

  856. mess.

  857. If you want to

  858. find out a true

  859. mark of a man

  860. and woman,

  861. what they like,

  862. who they are,

  863. when they are

  864. by themselves,

  865. all alone,

  866. when no one

  867. else is

  868. watching.

  869. Paul is

  870. saying, we

  871. need to

  872. choose guys

  873. who are

  874. going to

  875. be men

  876. of integrity,

  877. who are

  878. going to

  879. love their

  880. wives,

  881. who are

  882. going to

  883. lead their

  884. children,

  885. and be

  886. what they

  887. are in

  888. private as

  889. they are in

  890. public.

  891. So firstly,

  892. a man needs

  893. to be a

  894. godly leader

  895. in his

  896. home.

  897. Secondly,

  898. a potential

  899. elder must be

  900. blameless.

  901. Paul mentions

  902. twice in these

  903. verses,

  904. in ESV,

  905. they need

  906. to be

  907. above

  908. reproach,

  909. or in

  910. other

  911. translations

  912. they need

  913. to be

  914. blameless.

  915. This doesn't

  916. mean that

  917. a man

  918. mustn't

  919. sin,

  920. but that

  921. he's not

  922. liable to

  923. accusation

  924. or question

  925. as to his

  926. personal

  927. character

  928. and

  929. integrity.

  930. It means

  931. even if

  932. he's accused

  933. of something,

  934. people will

  935. laugh it off

  936. because they

  937. know what

  938. he's truly

  939. like.

  940. Again,

  941. it means

  942. being what

  943. we are in

  944. private,

  945. what we

  946. are in

  947. public.

  948. What does

  949. that look

  950. like?

  951. He gives

  952. us a list

  953. doesn't

  954. he?

  955. Here.

  956. He goes

  957. negative

  958. first.

  959. He says

  960. a leader

  961. must not

  962. be arrogant.

  963. In other

  964. words,

  965. a leader

  966. must not

  967. be full

  968. of himself.

  969. A leader

  970. can do

  971. much damage

  972. to his

  973. congregation

  974. when he's

  975. pig-headed

  976. and arrogant.

  977. That's not

  978. just leaders,

  979. men in

  980. general,

  981. isn't it?

  982. Pig-headed

  983. and arrogant.

  984. A man

  985. who's

  986. overbearing

  987. and stubborn

  988. and inconsiderate

  989. of people's

  990. feelings.

  991. He's like a

  992. bull in a

  993. china shop,

  994. isn't he?

  995. But a

  996. godly leader

  997. is a servant

  998. above all

  999. things,

  1000. isn't he?

  1001. He will

  1002. admit when

  1003. he gets

  1004. things wrong.

  1005. He will

  1006. let others

  1007. make decisions.

  1008. He's a

  1009. humble man

  1010. because he

  1011. knows that

  1012. God opposes

  1013. the proud,

  1014. but he

  1015. gives grace

  1016. to the

  1017. humble.

  1018. At

  1019. Nidra again,

  1020. when we're

  1021. choosing our

  1022. leaders or

  1023. we're

  1024. hiring staff

  1025. or interns

  1026. to our

  1027. program,

  1028. the first

  1029. task we

  1030. will get

  1031. people to

  1032. do is

  1033. clean the

  1034. toilets.

  1035. If they're

  1036. willing to

  1037. clean the

  1038. toilets,

  1039. then they're

  1040. ready for

  1041. service in

  1042. the church.

  1043. If they're

  1044. not,

  1045. then they

  1046. have a

  1047. pride problem

  1048. and they

  1049. are not

  1050. fit for

  1051. service,

  1052. are they?

  1053. Jesus is

  1054. clear,

  1055. whoever will

  1056. be great

  1057. among you

  1058. must be

  1059. your servant,

  1060. whoever will

  1061. be first

  1062. among you

  1063. must be

  1064. slave of

  1065. all,

  1066. for even

  1067. the Son

  1068. of Man

  1069. came not

  1070. to be

  1071. served,

  1072. but to

  1073. serve and

  1074. give his

  1075. life as

  1076. a ransom

  1077. for many.

  1078. Paul then

  1079. goes on,

  1080. he says,

  1081. a leader

  1082. must not

  1083. be quick

  1084. tempered,

  1085. he must

  1086. not be

  1087. a bully,

  1088. he must

  1089. not fly

  1090. off the

  1091. handle every

  1092. time he

  1093. doesn't get

  1094. his own

  1095. way,

  1096. but be

  1097. patient and

  1098. forbearing

  1099. with those

  1100. around him.

  1101. He must

  1102. be slow to

  1103. anger like

  1104. the God

  1105. who he

  1106. follows.

  1107. You see,

  1108. a short

  1109. fuse does

  1110. not help

  1111. the work

  1112. of God

  1113. at all,

  1114. but hinders

  1115. it,

  1116. doesn't

  1117. it?

  1118. Hudson

  1119. Taylor,

  1120. a missionary

  1121. from the

  1122. 19th century

  1123. said this,

  1124. my greatest

  1125. temptation

  1126. is to

  1127. my temper

  1128. over the

  1129. slackness

  1130. and

  1131. insufficiency

  1132. so disappointing

  1133. in those

  1134. on who

  1135. I depend.

  1136. It is no

  1137. use to

  1138. lose my

  1139. temper,

  1140. only kindness

  1141. is good,

  1142. but oh,

  1143. it is such

  1144. a trial.

  1145. ministry

  1146. can be

  1147. tough work,

  1148. church can

  1149. be tough

  1150. work in

  1151. general,

  1152. can't it?

  1153. Meeting

  1154. up with

  1155. people you

  1156. wouldn't

  1157. usually hang

  1158. out with

  1159. in general,

  1160. old and

  1161. young,

  1162. different

  1163. backgrounds

  1164. coming

  1165. together,

  1166. but as

  1167. leaders,

  1168. we face

  1169. trouble,

  1170. don't we?

  1171. We have

  1172. to feel

  1173. the complaints

  1174. and the

  1175. grumblings

  1176. of the

  1177. congregation

  1178. and we

  1179. need the

  1180. strength

  1181. of the

  1182. Lord to

  1183. be patient

  1184. with those

  1185. around us

  1186. because a

  1187. short fuse

  1188. does not

  1189. help the

  1190. kingdom of

  1191. God,

  1192. it only

  1193. hinders

  1194. it.

  1195. He must

  1196. not be a

  1197. drunkard or

  1198. violent.

  1199. In other

  1200. words,

  1201. he must be

  1202. able to

  1203. control his

  1204. passions,

  1205. he must be

  1206. able to

  1207. have self

  1208. control in

  1209. his life.

  1210. Again,

  1211. if he can't

  1212. have self

  1213. control in

  1214. his life,

  1215. how can

  1216. he counsel

  1217. someone who

  1218. is struggling

  1219. with it?

  1220. He cannot.

  1221. Paul rounds

  1222. off his

  1223. negative list

  1224. by saying

  1225. that Titus

  1226. should choose

  1227. men who

  1228. are not

  1229. greedy for

  1230. gain.

  1231. When I

  1232. think of

  1233. those words,

  1234. I think of

  1235. Judas Iscariot

  1236. who filled

  1237. his pockets

  1238. with the

  1239. money he

  1240. was supposed

  1241. to be

  1242. collecting

  1243. for the

  1244. disciples and

  1245. for the

  1246. Lord Jesus.

  1247. Money should

  1248. not be a

  1249. man's motive

  1250. for serving

  1251. in leadership.

  1252. We serve

  1253. Jesus Christ

  1254. and him

  1255. alone for

  1256. his glory,

  1257. not for

  1258. money.

  1259. We do

  1260. not go into

  1261. ministry to

  1262. make millions,

  1263. but for the

  1264. glory of

  1265. Christ.

  1266. Christ.

  1267. That's why

  1268. I can't

  1269. understand

  1270. these leaders

  1271. in America

  1272. who paid

  1273. themselves

  1274. six-figure

  1275. salaries,

  1276. making names

  1277. for themselves

  1278. of their

  1279. books.

  1280. They're not

  1281. really about

  1282. the glory of

  1283. God,

  1284. but about

  1285. them.

  1286. We do

  1287. not do

  1288. ministry to

  1289. make money

  1290. from it.

  1291. 1 Peter 5

  1292. 2 is clear.

  1293. Shepherd the

  1294. flock of

  1295. God is

  1296. among you,

  1297. exercising

  1298. oversight,

  1299. not under

  1300. compulsion,

  1301. but willingly

  1302. as God

  1303. would have

  1304. you,

  1305. not for

  1306. shameful

  1307. gain.

  1308. Then Paul

  1309. goes positive.

  1310. A godly

  1311. leader is

  1312. to be

  1313. hospitable,

  1314. he says.

  1315. That means

  1316. that a

  1317. leader must

  1318. be hospitable

  1319. to the alien

  1320. and stranger

  1321. in the land.

  1322. He must

  1323. love them.

  1324. There's a

  1325. great picture

  1326. of this in

  1327. Job 31,

  1328. 32.

  1329. Job says

  1330. this,

  1331. the sojourner

  1332. has not

  1333. lodged in

  1334. the street.

  1335. I've opened

  1336. my doors to

  1337. the traveller.

  1338. A godly

  1339. leader opens

  1340. up their

  1341. hearts and

  1342. opens up

  1343. their homes

  1344. to those

  1345. around them.

  1346. No matter

  1347. who they

  1348. are,

  1349. they're not

  1350. standoffish,

  1351. but they

  1352. are warm

  1353. towards

  1354. outsiders.

  1355. They open

  1356. up their

  1357. lives to

  1358. people.

  1359. They show

  1360. the world

  1361. their family

  1362. or they

  1363. care for

  1364. and they're

  1365. vulnerable

  1366. before people.

  1367. And a

  1368. lack of

  1369. hospitality

  1370. is only

  1371. a sign

  1372. of a

  1373. selfish

  1374. heart,

  1375. isn't

  1376. it?

  1377. And

  1378. hospitality

  1379. in our

  1380. culture

  1381. can be

  1382. sorely

  1383. missed,

  1384. can't it?

  1385. Because we're

  1386. so individualistic.

  1387. We have

  1388. this great

  1389. idol in our

  1390. culture and

  1391. it's called

  1392. this,

  1393. me time.

  1394. people of

  1395. Christ,

  1396. we are

  1397. called to

  1398. be

  1399. hospitable

  1400. and letting

  1401. the stranger

  1402. into our

  1403. homes,

  1404. the feet,

  1405. to love,

  1406. to care for.

  1407. A godly leader

  1408. will get into

  1409. people's lives

  1410. and allow

  1411. people to

  1412. see theirs

  1413. as well.

  1414. It goes on

  1415. and he says

  1416. a godly leader

  1417. loves what

  1418. is good.

  1419. Someone who

  1420. loves what

  1421. is good

  1422. is a

  1423. virtue

  1424. lover.

  1425. They love

  1426. the things

  1427. that Christ

  1428. loves and

  1429. they hate

  1430. the things

  1431. that Christ

  1432. hates.

  1433. Romans 12

    Romans 12:9

  1434. verse 9,

  1435. let love

  1436. be genuine,

  1437. abhor what

  1438. is evil,

  1439. hold fast

  1440. to what

  1441. is good.

  1442. Godly

  1443. leaders

  1444. self-controlled.

  1445. This means

  1446. that a

  1447. leader has

  1448. complete

  1449. self-mastery

  1450. over their

  1451. passions

  1452. and their

  1453. impulses.

  1454. In today's

  1455. language,

  1456. a man has

  1457. a good grip

  1458. on himself.

  1459. Too many

  1460. young men

  1461. do not have

  1462. a grip

  1463. on themselves,

  1464. do they?

  1465. And older

  1466. men,

  1467. and middle

  1468. aged men.

  1469. They have

  1470. a grip

  1471. on themselves,

  1472. do they?

  1473. And their

  1474. passions.

  1475. A godly

  1476. man monitors

  1477. himself day

  1478. in and day

  1479. out and he

  1480. submits

  1481. himself to

  1482. the x-ray

  1483. and cat

  1484. scan

  1485. detail of

  1486. God's

  1487. perfect

  1488. words.

  1489. As

  1490. leaders

  1491. and as

  1492. men in

  1493. general,

  1494. we must

  1495. not forget

  1496. what kind

  1497. of men

  1498. we are.

  1499. At root,

  1500. we are

  1501. sinful

  1502. rats.

  1503. We are

  1504. rat bags

  1505. who have

  1506. only been

  1507. saved because

  1508. of the

  1509. grace of

  1510. our Lord

  1511. Jesus

  1512. Christ.

  1513. And yes,

  1514. we are

  1515. changed from

  1516. the inside

  1517. out afterwards,

  1518. but we

  1519. still have

  1520. sin in

  1521. dwelling.

  1522. we still

  1523. struggle.

  1524. We still

  1525. have a

  1526. battle going

  1527. on in

  1528. our hearts.

  1529. Let me

  1530. warn you

  1531. as a

  1532. church,

  1533. do not

  1534. put your

  1535. elders up

  1536. as a

  1537. pedestal

  1538. up here

  1539. that they're

  1540. going to

  1541. be a

  1542. super

  1543. Christian

  1544. compared

  1545. to you

  1546. guys.

  1547. They

  1548. have the

  1549. same

  1550. struggles

  1551. and issues

  1552. that every

  1553. other person

  1554. faces

  1555. within

  1556. the

  1557. church.

  1558. Eldership

  1559. can be a

  1560. lonely

  1561. experience.

  1562. I felt

  1563. it.

  1564. It can

  1565. be a

  1566. very

  1567. lonely

  1568. experience.

  1569. And so

  1570. you as a

  1571. congregation

  1572. need to

  1573. pray for

  1574. your

  1575. elders,

  1576. don't

  1577. you?

  1578. You as

  1579. a congregation

  1580. need to

  1581. keep your

  1582. elders

  1583. accountable.

  1584. And as

  1585. leaders here

  1586. at this

  1587. church,

  1588. you need to

  1589. make sure

  1590. you have

  1591. good,

  1592. godly

  1593. people

  1594. around

  1595. you that

  1596. you can

  1597. talk to

  1598. about what's

  1599. going on in

  1600. your heart

  1601. and mind.

  1602. Do not

  1603. sweep things

  1604. under the

  1605. carpet,

  1606. because it

  1607. always comes

  1608. out at

  1609. some point

  1610. under the

  1611. stresses of

  1612. ministry.

  1613. God

  1614. is

  1615. upright

  1616. or

  1617. sensible.

  1618. This is a

  1619. man who

  1620. has a

  1621. balanced

  1622. life.

  1623. He acts

  1624. with wisdom

  1625. and common

  1626. sense.

  1627. He sees

  1628. things from

  1629. God's

  1630. perspective

  1631. and acts

  1632. accordingly.

  1633. There's a

  1634. difference,

  1635. isn't there,

  1636. in life between

  1637. someone who

  1638. knows the

  1639. Bible and

  1640. someone who

  1641. knows the

  1642. Bible and

  1643. knows how to

  1644. put that into

  1645. practical terms

  1646. in their

  1647. lives.

  1648. Someone who

  1649. has wisdom

  1650. to implement

  1651. it.

  1652. Charles

  1653. Purgeon

  1654. said this

  1655. when thinking

  1656. about selecting

  1657. leaders.

  1658. He said,

  1659. certain good

  1660. men appealed

  1661. to me who

  1662. were distinguished

  1663. by enormous

  1664. passion and

  1665. zeal and a

  1666. conspicuous

  1667. absence of

  1668. brains.

  1669. Brethren who

  1670. would take

  1671. forever and

  1672. ever upon

  1673. nothing,

  1674. who would

  1675. stamp and

  1676. thump the

  1677. Bible and

  1678. get nothing

  1679. out of it,

  1680. are all

  1681. earnest,

  1682. awfully

  1683. earnest.

  1684. Mountains

  1685. and

  1686. labour are

  1687. the most

  1688. painful

  1689. kind,

  1690. but nothing

  1691. comes out

  1692. of it all.

  1693. Therefore,

  1694. I have

  1695. usually declined

  1696. their

  1697. applications.

  1698. In other

  1699. words,

  1700. a man must

  1701. not just

  1702. have zeal,

  1703. but he

  1704. must have

  1705. common

  1706. sense as

  1707. well.

  1708. Finally,

  1709. Paul says

  1710. to Timothy,

  1711. they need

  1712. to be

  1713. disciplined

  1714. and holy.

  1715. To be

  1716. holy in

  1717. this context

  1718. means to

  1719. be pure

  1720. and unpolluted.

  1721. Again,

  1722. this is a

  1723. man

  1724. committed

  1725. to godliness

  1726. and Christ

  1727. likeness.

  1728. People

  1729. often think

  1730. in our

  1731. culture that

  1732. holiness is

  1733. just not

  1734. doing what

  1735. the culture

  1736. does.

  1737. Back in

  1738. the day,

  1739. it was like

  1740. holiness is

  1741. I don't

  1742. go to the

  1743. cinema,

  1744. I don't

  1745. go to the

  1746. dancing,

  1747. I don't

  1748. smoke,

  1749. I don't

  1750. do this,

  1751. I don't

  1752. do that.

  1753. And that's

  1754. part of

  1755. it,

  1756. isn't it?

  1757. Standing

  1758. against the

  1759. culture,

  1760. but it's

  1761. deeper than

  1762. that,

  1763. isn't it?

  1764. Holiness

  1765. is about

  1766. being totally

  1767. transformed

  1768. inside out

  1769. into the

  1770. likeness of

  1771. Christ.

  1772. That's what we

  1773. should all be

  1774. striving for in

  1775. our lives.

  1776. It means to

  1777. love the

  1778. things that he

  1779. loves.

  1780. Again, it

  1781. means to

  1782. hate the

  1783. things that

  1784. he hates.

  1785. It means to

  1786. value the

  1787. things that

  1788. he values.

  1789. So we

  1790. need to

  1791. be looking

  1792. for men

  1793. who are

  1794. pursuing

  1795. Christ,

  1796. who love

  1797. him first,

  1798. who want

  1799. to serve

  1800. for his

  1801. glory and

  1802. not for

  1803. their own.

  1804. Again, let

  1805. me say these

  1806. are characters

  1807. that are not

  1808. super spiritual

  1809. ones.

  1810. There's an

  1811. absence of

  1812. unusual qualities

  1813. here, isn't

  1814. there?

  1815. We should

  1816. all be known

  1817. by holiness.

  1818. We should

  1819. all be known

  1820. by hospitality.

  1821. We should

  1822. all be known

  1823. by self-control.

  1824. And all the

  1825. other things

  1826. on this

  1827. list.

  1828. As Alistair

  1829. Begg writes,

  1830. these are just

  1831. down to

  1832. earth, common

  1833. commodities of

  1834. the Christian

  1835. life.

  1836. This job is

  1837. not for the

  1838. flashy.

  1839. It's not for

  1840. those who are

  1841. good in the

  1842. business world,

  1843. or just for

  1844. the those who

  1845. are good in

  1846. the business

  1847. world.

  1848. The position

  1849. of leadership

  1850. is for men

  1851. of character.

  1852. And if you

  1853. are a

  1854. wannabe leader,

  1855. if that's

  1856. something you

  1857. want to do,

  1858. that's a

  1859. noble thing

  1860. to want

  1861. to do.

  1862. But let

  1863. me warn you,

  1864. you need to

  1865. pray deeply

  1866. about it.

  1867. Because James

  1868. 3, 1 says

  1869. this,

  1870. not many of

  1871. you should

  1872. become teachers,

  1873. my brothers,

  1874. for you know

  1875. that we who

  1876. teach will be

  1877. judged with

  1878. greater

  1879. strictness.

  1880. Greater

  1881. strictness,

  1882. that's scary

  1883. stuff.

  1884. We need to

  1885. think twice.

  1886. There's no

  1887. greater privilege

  1888. than being a

  1889. leader, I can

  1890. tell you that.

  1891. we must go

  1892. into leadership

  1893. with the

  1894. right heart

  1895. and with

  1896. humility

  1897. before God.

  1898. We challenge

  1899. you again as

  1900. a church

  1901. of Brunsford,

  1902. you need to

  1903. pray for your

  1904. elders.

  1905. You need to

  1906. ask them

  1907. constantly,

  1908. how are they

  1909. getting on in

  1910. their Christian

  1911. walk?

  1912. Hebrews 13,

  1913. 7,

  1914. remember your

  1915. leaders,

  1916. don't forget

  1917. them,

  1918. keep them

  1919. accountable.

  1920. the health

  1921. of this

  1922. church

  1923. depends in

  1924. part on

  1925. your

  1926. elders

  1927. to commit

  1928. them to

  1929. prayer.

  1930. I don't

  1931. think we

  1932. realise

  1933. sometimes

  1934. the heavy

  1935. pressure

  1936. that elders

  1937. come under

  1938. from the

  1939. evil one.

  1940. Satan

  1941. knows if

  1942. he can

  1943. sift a

  1944. leader

  1945. then the

  1946. ministry

  1947. goes kaput.

  1948. He knows

  1949. if he can

  1950. get to

  1951. the top

  1952. men or

  1953. women

  1954. that the

  1955. house of

  1956. cards

  1957. will

  1958. tumble.

  1959. So

  1960. members,

  1961. get on

  1962. your knees

  1963. daily for

  1964. your leaders

  1965. and pray

  1966. for them.

  1967. And leaders,

  1968. be on guard

  1969. constantly,

  1970. wearing the

  1971. spiritual armour

  1972. of the Lord

  1973. because Satan

  1974. is roaring

  1975. around like

  1976. a wild lion

  1977. seeking to

  1978. devour.

  1979. We need

  1980. Christ,

  1981. don't we

  1982. leaders?

  1983. We need

  1984. Christ.

  1985. So

  1986. secondly,

  1987. a leader needs

  1988. to be blamed

  1989. and thirdly,

  1990. a godly leader

  1991. and finally,

  1992. needs to

  1993. teach

  1994. sound

  1995. doctrine.

  1996. Look at

  1997. verse 9

  1998. again.

  1999. He must

  2000. hold firm

  2001. the trustworthy

  2002. word as

  2003. taught so

  2004. that he may

  2005. be able to

  2006. give instruction

  2007. to sound

  2008. doctrine and

  2009. also to

  2010. rebuke those

  2011. who contradict

  2012. it.

  2013. An elder

  2014. has two

  2015. jobs,

  2016. to preach

  2017. the word

  2018. and to

  2019. defend

  2020. the truth.

  2021. This means

  2022. an elder

  2023. must know

  2024. the word

  2025. of God.

  2026. They must

  2027. know the

  2028. foundational

  2029. truths of

  2030. the Bible

  2031. so that he

  2032. can equip

  2033. the sheep

  2034. and keep

  2035. them from

  2036. error.

  2037. Our

  2038. churches,

  2039. don't they

  2040. need the

  2041. word of

  2042. God,

  2043. people?

  2044. They need

  2045. to know

  2046. that it's

  2047. sufficient

  2048. for all

  2049. of life's

  2050. problems.

  2051. They need

  2052. to know

  2053. that it is

  2054. a mighty

  2055. unstoppable

  2056. river.

  2057. they need

  2058. to know

  2059. that it's

  2060. only by

  2061. God's

  2062. words that

  2063. we will

  2064. be changed.

  2065. They need

  2066. to know

  2067. that this

  2068. word is

  2069. dynamite,

  2070. isn't it?

  2071. As we

  2072. read it,

  2073. as we

  2074. pray upon

  2075. it,

  2076. as we

  2077. hear it

  2078. preached

  2079. week in,

  2080. week out,

  2081. it puts us

  2082. in our

  2083. place,

  2084. doesn't it?

  2085. It reminds

  2086. us who

  2087. God is.

  2088. It reminds

  2089. us that

  2090. we are

  2091. sinners in

  2092. comparison.

  2093. It reminds

  2094. us constantly

  2095. of our need

  2096. for the

  2097. Lord Jesus

  2098. Christ to

  2099. be close

  2100. to us.

  2101. The

  2102. word

  2103. transforms

  2104. us as

  2105. the spirit

  2106. of God

  2107. takes it

  2108. and applies

  2109. it to

  2110. our lives.

  2111. In

  2112. short,

  2113. God's

  2114. words

  2115. brings

  2116. revival

  2117. and

  2118. spiritual

  2119. awakening.

  2120. And so

  2121. as elders

  2122. and pastors

  2123. here,

  2124. do not

  2125. try flashy

  2126. techniques.

  2127. They don't

  2128. work.

  2129. Only the

  2130. word of

  2131. God can

  2132. transform

  2133. our lives.

  2134. Preach

  2135. it,

  2136. know

  2137. it,

  2138. trust

  2139. in it,

  2140. be

  2141. transformed

  2142. by it.

  2143. Listen to

  2144. Paul's

  2145. instruction to

  2146. Timothy,

  2147. I charge

  2148. you in the

  2149. presence of

  2150. God and

  2151. of Christ

  2152. Jesus,

  2153. who's judged

  2154. the living and

  2155. the dead,

  2156. and by his

  2157. appearing in

  2158. his kingdom,

  2159. preach the

  2160. word.

  2161. Be ready in

  2162. season and

  2163. out of season.

  2164. Reprove,

  2165. rebuke,

  2166. and exhort with

  2167. complete patience

  2168. and teaching.

  2169. Again,

  2170. I revert back

  2171. to that

  2172. testimony that

  2173. you heard

  2174. earlier.

  2175. We didn't

  2176. do anything

  2177. special.

  2178. There's no

  2179. zip wire at

  2180. our church,

  2181. no smoke

  2182. machines.

  2183. We preach

  2184. the words

  2185. week in,

  2186. week out.

  2187. People come,

  2188. they hear,

  2189. and they are

  2190. transformed.

  2191. That's what's

  2192. going to

  2193. transform your

  2194. hearts and

  2195. your minds

  2196. here at

  2197. Brunsfield.

  2198. Let me say

  2199. again,

  2200. this is not

  2201. just a

  2202. man thing.

  2203. Men and

  2204. women and

  2205. children need

  2206. to know

  2207. God's words.

  2208. We need

  2209. godly wives,

  2210. don't we?

  2211. We need

  2212. older women

  2213. here to

  2214. teach younger

  2215. women and

  2216. sound doctrine

  2217. and get

  2218. into that

  2219. in Titus

  2220. 2.

  2221. You see,

  2222. it's not

  2223. just the

  2224. job of

  2225. the elders

  2226. to protect

  2227. the purity

  2228. of the

  2229. gospel of

  2230. the whole

  2231. church.

  2232. In

  2233. Galatians

  2234. 1.6,

  2235. he doesn't

  2236. write to

  2237. the elders,

  2238. he writes

  2239. to the

  2240. church.

  2241. And he

  2242. holds them

  2243. accountable

  2244. for protecting

  2245. the gospel.

  2246. We need

  2247. more women,

  2248. don't we,

  2249. who are

  2250. theologically

  2251. astute and

  2252. can train

  2253. younger women

  2254. and be a

  2255. godly influence

  2256. in their

  2257. lives.

  2258. Just because

  2259. we're

  2260. complementarian

  2261. does not

  2262. mean that we

  2263. cannot train

  2264. women to

  2265. train others,

  2266. other women.

  2267. It's sorely

  2268. missing in

  2269. our land.

  2270. And your

  2271. main job as

  2272. a listener,

  2273. week in and

  2274. week out,

  2275. is to be

  2276. attentive to

  2277. God's word,

  2278. but not to

  2279. be like the

  2280. man who

  2281. looks in

  2282. the mirror

  2283. and walks

  2284. away and

  2285. doesn't do

  2286. anything about

  2287. it, but to

  2288. obey God's

  2289. words.

  2290. Listen to

  2291. it.

  2292. Listen to

  2293. what your

  2294. elders are

  2295. saying through

  2296. God's word

  2297. and respond to

  2298. it in

  2299. repentance and

  2300. faith.

  2301. Let me end

  2302. with one,

  2303. Peter, if

  2304. you want to

  2305. turn with me

  2306. there.

  2307. 1 Peter 5

  2308. says this,

  2309. So exhort

  2310. the elders

  2311. among you

  2312. as a

  2313. fellow elder

  2314. and a

  2315. witness of

  2316. the sufferings

  2317. of Christ,

  2318. as well as

  2319. the partaking

  2320. of the glory

  2321. that is going

  2322. to be revealed.

  2323. Shepherd the

  2324. flock of

  2325. God that is

  2326. among you

  2327. exercising

  2328. oversight,

  2329. not under

  2330. compulsion,

  2331. but willingly

  2332. as God

  2333. would have

  2334. you,

  2335. not for

  2336. shameful

  2337. gain,

  2338. but eagerly,

  2339. not domineering

  2340. over those

  2341. in your

  2342. charge,

  2343. but being

  2344. examples to

  2345. the flock.

  2346. And when

  2347. the chief

  2348. shepherd

  2349. appears,

  2350. you will

  2351. receive the

  2352. unfading

  2353. crown

  2354. of glory.

  2355. one day,

  2356. Jesus is

  2357. going to

  2358. come back

  2359. and what a

  2360. glorious day

  2361. it's going

  2362. to be.

  2363. And he's

  2364. going to

  2365. hold us

  2366. leaders

  2367. accountable

  2368. for our

  2369. service to

  2370. his flock.

  2371. our people

  2372. and our

  2373. churches

  2374. are only

  2375. on loan

  2376. for us

  2377. so we

  2378. might

  2379. protect

  2380. them,

  2381. build

  2382. them

  2383. up,

  2384. guide

  2385. and love

  2386. them

  2387. well.

  2388. And it

  2389. is a

  2390. tough job,

  2391. it is a

  2392. difficult job

  2393. at times,

  2394. it's a

  2395. thankless

  2396. task,

  2397. but here's

  2398. the encouragement

  2399. from this

  2400. text,

  2401. if we have

  2402. been faithful

  2403. to Christ

  2404. then we

  2405. will receive

  2406. the unfading

  2407. crown

  2408. of glory.

  2409. Let us

  2410. remember the

  2411. Lord Jesus

  2412. Christ as

  2413. we end,

  2414. because this

  2415. list in

  2416. this book

  2417. of Titus is

  2418. really just a

  2419. description of

  2420. Jesus Christ

  2421. isn't it?

  2422. He is the

  2423. perfect leader

  2424. and shepherd

  2425. who laid

  2426. down his

  2427. sheep for

  2428. his flock

  2429. so that we

  2430. might come

  2431. into the

  2432. presence of

  2433. God and

  2434. worship him

  2435. in spirit

  2436. and in

  2437. truth.

  2438. As

  2439. Christians

  2440. here this

  2441. evening we

  2442. need to keep

  2443. our eyes

  2444. focused on

  2445. him,

  2446. don't we?

  2447. The founder

  2448. perfecter of

  2449. our faith

  2450. and keep

  2451. running this

  2452. race with

  2453. our endurance.

  2454. Our leaders

  2455. might not be

  2456. perfect,

  2457. in fact they

  2458. are not,

  2459. but he

  2460. was and

  2461. he will lead

  2462. us all the

  2463. way home

  2464. under the

  2465. leadership of

  2466. his

  2467. under

  2468. shepherds.

  2469. Seek

  2470. Christ this

  2471. evening

  2472. and

  2473. imitate

  2474. him.

  2475. Amen?

  2476. Amen.
