  1. Well, good morning, everyone. Are we well? Good. Well, let's pray together as we come to God's word.

  2. Oh, Father, we thank you so much this morning that we come here.

  3. As we've been singing, we do not worship a dead God.

  4. We do not worship a man whose body can be found somewhere if you dig up a grave in the Middle East.

  5. But we thank you that we worship and we know you who are the living God.

  6. You who are the speaking God.

  7. And Father, as we come to your word now, as we come to this psalm that we've been thinking about the last wee while.

  8. Lord, we ask that you would teach us.

  9. We ask that you would encourage us.

  10. We ask that you would challenge us.

  11. We ask that you would convict us.

  12. We ask that you would sharpen us and mold us all for the glory of your son, Jesus Christ.

  13. And it's in his name that we pray confidently.

  14. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  15. Amen.

  16. Well, you up for learning a new word this morning?

  17. Yeah.

  18. Here is the word that I learned recently.

  19. An ultra-crepidarian.

  20. Has anyone heard of this word?

  21. One person has heard of this word.

  22. So I'm not getting away if I'm making this up.

  23. You will correct me.

  24. An ultra-crepidarian is somebody who offers advice.

  25. Now, I wonder how you rate your advice-giving skills.

  26. Do you have any agony ants in the room?

  27. Do we have any people who really rate their ability to offer advice to people?

  28. Well, let me tell you the story of a man I was reading about this week called Joseph.

  29. And Joseph is a Maasai warrior in Africa.

  30. Joseph hears about Jesus.

  31. Becomes a Christian.

  32. Inexpressible joy and excitement fill his heart.

  33. So what does he do?

  34. Naturally, he travels around the surrounding villages that surround his.

  35. He tells everyone he meets about this man, Jesus, who has transformed his life.

  36. What does he expect to see?

  37. He expects to see their faces light up the same way that his did.

  38. So what does he see?

  39. Well, he sees not faces lit up.

  40. He sees faces full of anger.

  41. And the people, as you listen to what Joseph has to say, they turn violent.

  42. The men of the village, they pin him down.

  43. The women of the village, they take barbed wire and they beat him.

  44. And they throw him out of the village.

  45. And Joseph is sitting there thinking,

  46. I mustn't have told them right about Jesus.

  47. So what does he do?

  48. He goes back into the village.

  49. And he starts speaking again.

  50. And the same thing happens to him.

  51. And the wounds that started to heal, all of a sudden are reopened again.

  52. Once again, he's thrown out of the village for speaking about Jesus.

  53. So here's what I want you to imagine this morning.

  54. Picture him.

  55. He's outside the village.

  56. Battered.

  57. Bruised.

  58. Perplexed.

  59. Distressed.

  60. And he turns to you.

  61. Looked you in the eye.

  62. And he says, what should I do?

  63. So now that we're all confessing ultra-crepidarians, how would you advise Joseph?

  64. What do you say to somebody who's feeling the heat and is facing the flames because of their trust in God?

  65. Now, I imagine for many of us here this morning, that is a very real question.

  66. And I imagine for many of us here this morning, it's a very raw question.

  67. What do you say to somebody who's knowing the reality of suffering in their lives?

  68. Well, here's what I love about the Bible.

  69. It doesn't shy away from telling me about the suffering in human life.

  70. Here's what I also love about the Bible.

  71. It tells me about a man.

  72. It tells me about a man who knows what the realness and the rawness of faith in God is like.

  73. It tells me about a suffering king.

  74. Psalm 22.

  75. We've been in it the last few weeks.

  76. Psalm 22.

  77. We meet a king.

  78. And as Paul read it there, you'll have read it and seen it.

  79. A king who is feeling the heat and a king who is facing the flames because he trusts in God.

  80. Now, I just want us to see two very quick things this morning about these verses.

  81. I think these verses present us, and if you have Psalm 22 there, get it in front of you, these verses.

  82. Because I think this is massively important for us this morning.

  83. Two great realities for the suffering Christian that these verses give us.

  84. Two great realities.

  85. You ready for these two realities?

  86. Yeah?

  87. Show me some enthusiasm.

  88. Right?

  89. We're good.

  90. Here's the first reality.

  91. That there is a world that stands against you.

  92. Now, we live in a world, don't we, that is hostile to God.

  93. And because of that, we live in a world that is hostile to his people.

  94. And that's what David is experiencing in our verses in Psalm 22.

  95. What does he describe?

  96. Look at it there.

  97. Scan your eyes over verses 6 to 8 and verses 12 to 17.

  98. What does he describe?

  99. Firstly, he describes the faces that surround him.

  100. Do you see that?

  101. How does he describe these people?

  102. Well, look at the language that he uses.

  103. He uses beastly language.

  104. Do you see that?

  105. A lot of animals he mentions.

  106. Strong bulls.

  107. Roaring lions.

  108. A pack of dogs.

  109. Now, I don't know if you've ever been to Africa or the third world.

  110. And you've seen packs of dogs.

  111. This is not Butsi the Chihuahua.

  112. Right?

  113. These are flea-carrying dogs who are out to get him.

  114. These are not domesticated pets that David is rhyming off here.

  115. These are animals who are out to kill him.

  116. This is like that moment in the David Attenborough documentaries that you've probably seen on BBC 2 the last few days.

  117. You can tell I've been on holiday.

  118. Like the wildebeest when he spots the hunter in the long grass.

  119. What does he do?

  120. He legs it out of there.

  121. They tear their prey.

  122. Look what he's saying.

  123. They open their mouths.

  124. And these animals, these people, they surround him at every side.

  125. Do you see that?

  126. And their faces don't just surround him.

  127. Actually, their hands are on him.

  128. They've got him.

  129. They pierce him.

  130. They mock him.

  131. They scoff at him.

  132. They insult him.

  133. They stare at him.

  134. They gloat at him.

  135. They strip him.

  136. And how does David feel?

  137. He feels like a worm.

  138. So small.

  139. So fragile.

  140. So powerless.

  141. And if he uses beastly language to describe those surround him,

  142. do you see how he uses bodily language to describe how he is feeling?

  143. His heart.

  144. Like wax melting within him.

  145. Do you feel the pain?

  146. His mouth, it's dry.

  147. His tongue sticking to the roof of his mouth.

  148. His bones are on display.

  149. Here is a world that stands against this king.

  150. Now, of course, if David is using this language somewhat hyperbolically here,

  151. Jesus, as he endures the cross, well, he is certainly not.

  152. His face, his face was targeted.

  153. His side was literally pierced.

  154. His name was, it was mocked.

  155. His trust in God, it was ridiculed.

  156. He was slapped.

  157. Get your head around that.

  158. There was a human being who slapped God.

  159. His body was broken.

  160. His garments were divided.

  161. His life was taken.

  162. And the faces that surrounded him, well, their hands were well and truly on Jesus Christ.

  163. Now, why?

  164. Why?

  165. I don't know if you remember ever watching a few years ago the film that came out, The Passion of the Christ.

  166. This film that was directed by Mel Gibson.

  167. Well, I learned an interesting fact recently about the film.

  168. That Gibson, he only appears in one scene in that film.

  169. One scene.

  170. His are the hands that hold the nail, that drive, hold the hammer, that drive the nail into Jesus' hands.

  171. And it was Gibson, in a way, saying, listen, I wasn't there that day.

  172. I wasn't there that day.

  173. But in another sense, I absolutely was there that day.

  174. My sins put him there.

  175. He took the punishment that I deserve.

  176. That's what Gibson knew to be true in his own life.

  177. And that's what's true for all of us here this morning.

  178. We were not there.

  179. We were not there.

  180. But in another sense, we absolutely were there.

  181. For he was wounded for our transgressions, writes Isaiah.

  182. Isaiah, he was crushed for our iniquities.

  183. And with his stripes, we are healed.

  184. Now, as we contemplate Christ on the cross this morning,

  185. I think there are two wonderful lessons for us to learn as a church family, as we look at him.

  186. Here's the first lesson.

  187. Lesson number one from the cross.

  188. To take heed of the example that Jesus shows us.

  189. Now, you can imagine that David was powerless to do much about his situation.

  190. But Jesus, well, he definitely wasn't powerless to do much about his situation.

  191. What did Jesus say to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane?

  192. When Judas comes and betrays him, what do the disciples want?

  193. Well, they want to fight.

  194. They want a scrap, understandably.

  195. I don't know if you've ever watched, but I'm sure you have, the Lord of the Rings films.

  196. Some of my favorite scenes are when Gandalf, he gets his stick.

  197. And what does he do?

  198. He just hammers it on the ground.

  199. And his enemies just get flung.

  200. So great is the power that's unleashed.

  201. He does.

  202. He smashes those who are opposing him.

  203. Well, if I were advising Jesus here, that's what I would have told him to do.

  204. But what does he say to his disciples?

  205. Put your swords away.

  206. put them away do you not think that I could appeal to God and he would send

  207. down 12 legions of armies do you think I could play that card at any second if I wanted to

  208. but the plan of God would not be fulfilled and so what do we see him do we see him go to the soldier

  209. whose ear has been cut off and what does he do he heals him

  210. Jesus thoughts in that moment of betrayal are not on returning evil they're on doing good

  211. they're not on retribution not on retaliation but they're on restoration

  212. with that mindset he goes to the cross and he lays down his life for the very ones who are trying

  213. to kill him and do kill him this is our enemy loving king now we love talking about leadership

  214. in our culture don't we I don't know if you've ever been into to water zones recently but you look

  215. it's just shelves and shelves full of leadership books how to be the best leader you can be

  216. we love them don't we we love Steve Jobs we love Alex Ferguson we love Winston Churchill but what is

  217. the greatest mark of a great leader surely it's to not ask something of others that you would not

  218. be prepared to do yourself so do you see that there is no leader quite like Jesus Christ he truly is in

  219. a league of his own he truly is incomparable he is well and truly head and shoulders above any man

  220. that I've ever heard of for he who said turn the other cheek

  221. let's people hammer in the nails he who said love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you he

  222. died for his enemies

  223. now we may never plumb the depths of this psalm in terms of our suffering and our persecution

  224. but we still face don't we as God's people we still face little fires in our lives we can call

  225. them that when those in the office when they ostracize you for being different when those at

  226. university they they look on you differently because you will not join in the drinking games

  227. when you was at school they bully bully you for standing and declaring your faith in Jesus Christ

  228. well what would the cross say to us this morning

  229. it would say pray for them

  230. and love them

  231. and tell them

  232. you see this is the pattern that we see

  233. at the cross

  234. and in case we were in any doubt as to what it means to follow Jesus Christ

  235. do you see here

  236. that to follow him the pattern is very much cross shaped

  237. so there's lesson number one from the cross to heed the example that Jesus shows us

  238. but here's lesson number two from the cross

  239. to take heart from the truth that Jesus knows us

  240. right at the heart of the Christian faith is a God who has suffered

  241. that Jesus is not immune from the pain

  242. he got involved in our darkness

  243. he tasted death

  244. and he knows what it means

  245. to be targeted

  246. because one trusts

  247. in God

  248. but it's more than that

  249. do you remember when you were young

  250. and you used to have an imaginary friend

  251. no me neither

  252. well Jesus

  253. is no imaginary friend

  254. he is no distant sympathizer

  255. he is no removed empathizer

  256. here is a king

  257. who we can call our brother

  258. and our king has sent his spirit to dwell in the lives of his people

  259. not as a casual dweller

  260. but as a permanent occupier

  261. to live inside of us

  262. and to help us

  263. and where is Jesus now

  264. well he's at the right hand of God praying for us

  265. isn't it a wonderful truth for us to grasp this morning

  266. that Jesus is more committed to his sheep

  267. than his sheep are to him

  268. that Jesus is more committed to praying for me

  269. than I am to praying for me

  270. I find that in my own prayer life

  271. that I'm praying for people

  272. praying for things

  273. so what happens

  274. Lord would you bless David

  275. would you look after him

  276. would you surround him with your peace

  277. so that reminds me

  278. I need to meet David this week

  279. I wonder where we can meet

  280. maybe we can go to Starbucks

  281. they're doing that new vanilla latte

  282. do you not find that in your prayer life

  283. is it not incredible to think

  284. that Jesus is more committed

  285. to prayer than I am

  286. that Jesus is more committed to me

  287. as his sheep

  288. than I am to him

  289. that I get tired

  290. my concentration drifts

  291. but Jesus never ceases to pray

  292. at the right hand of the Father

  293. for his people

  294. and as we think on the blessed truth

  295. of our praying saviour

  296. his ceaseless

  297. fervent

  298. impassioned

  299. hearty

  300. intercession

  301. on our behalf

  302. that should drive us

  303. to love him more

  304. Robert Marnie McShane

  305. one of Scotland's finest preachers

  306. preachers

  307. he said this

  308. if I could hear

  309. Christ praying for me

  310. in the next room

  311. oh I would not fear

  312. a million enemies

  313. yet distance makes no difference

  314. for he is praying for me

  315. oh that should massively

  316. comfort us this morning

  317. that should massively inspire us

  318. this morning

  319. as we live our lives

  320. following this king

  321. in a world

  322. that stands

  323. against us

  324. for in Jesus Christ

  325. do you see friends

  326. that we do not have

  327. we could not ask for

  328. a better king

  329. as we return to the psalm

  330. in the midst of the suffering

  331. see what David is doing

  332. this is the second

  333. big thing for us

  334. to know this morning

  335. the second big reality

  336. for the suffering Christian

  337. that there may be a world

  338. that stands against you

  339. but know

  340. that there is a God

  341. who stands

  342. beside you

  343. now just cast your eyes

  344. over these verses here

  345. look firstly

  346. at what David is declaring

  347. do you see it there

  348. in those verses

  349. what is he declaring

  350. that God

  351. is

  352. my

  353. strength

  354. God you are

  355. my

  356. strength

  357. and he's not

  358. picturing God

  359. as some kind of

  360. divine

  361. Duracell bunny

  362. God is not

  363. some triple A

  364. after his name

  365. who will zap him

  366. with power

  367. he's reminding himself

  368. of God's

  369. absolute

  370. sovereignty

  371. that God

  372. is in

  373. total control

  374. of his life

  375. that God

  376. holds

  377. his times

  378. in the palms

  379. of his

  380. hands

  381. do you see the language

  382. here

  383. that God

  384. is the one

  385. who has nursed him

  386. from the womb

  387. that God

  388. is the one

  389. who has given him

  390. every heartbeat

  391. such intimate

  392. language

  393. as if to say

  394. God

  395. there has never

  396. been a moment

  397. where you've not

  398. been there

  399. so a personal note

  400. I found that so

  401. comforting this week

  402. to know

  403. that

  404. God

  405. holds

  406. my family's

  407. life

  408. in his hands

  409. just as much

  410. as he does

  411. my hand

  412. that nothing

  413. is happening

  414. that he does not

  415. know about

  416. nothing is happening

  417. that he's not

  418. in control over

  419. he holds

  420. our life

  421. in his hand

  422. words

  423. that I found

  424. so massively

  425. reassuring

  426. this week

  427. and I wrote them

  428. about six times

  429. to know

  430. I wouldn't cry

  431. but you see

  432. what he's declaring

  433. here

  434. that God

  435. is in control

  436. of his life

  437. that he trusts

  438. that God

  439. is good

  440. and he trusts

  441. that God

  442. has a purpose

  443. and a plan

  444. for his life

  445. he's trusting

  446. in God's

  447. total ability

  448. to provide

  449. everything

  450. that he needs

  451. and his people

  452. need

  453. in their time

  454. of trial

  455. he's throwing

  456. himself

  457. on that truth

  458. that God

  459. you are

  460. sustaining me

  461. God

  462. you hold

  463. my life

  464. in the palm

  465. of your hand

  466. George Whitefield

  467. American evangelist

  468. back in the day

  469. famously said

  470. I am immortal

  471. until God

  472. calls me home

  473. that God

  474. holds

  475. our lives

  476. in his hands

  477. now where has

  478. David got that

  479. idea from

  480. I wonder

  481. where has he

  482. got that from

  483. well he's got it

  484. from God's

  485. proven track record

  486. he knows

  487. God is a

  488. faithful God

  489. he knows

  490. that God

  491. is a God

  492. of abundant

  493. goodness

  494. and so

  495. what does

  496. he declare

  497. God

  498. you are

  499. my strength

  500. and if that's

  501. what David

  502. is declaring

  503. notice secondly

  504. what he is

  505. praying

  506. that God

  507. would save

  508. him

  509. look at the

  510. words he uses

  511. in verses

  512. 19 to 21

  513. what does

  514. he pray

  515. help me

  516. save me

  517. deliver me

  518. rescue me

  519. he knows

  520. that he

  521. needs God's

  522. help

  523. as I was

  524. preparing

  525. and I was

  526. thinking about

  527. this passage

  528. over the last

  529. few weeks

  530. it got me

  531. thinking

  532. how can we

  533. use this

  534. prayer in

  535. our lives

  536. as a church

  537. how can we

  538. use this

  539. prayer in

  540. the lives

  541. of our

  542. lives as

  543. God's people

  544. now it

  545. occurred to me

  546. that we

  547. might never

  548. experience the

  549. depths of

  550. this

  551. this cry

  552. it might

  553. never be

  554. mine

  555. these words

  556. they might

  557. never be

  558. mine

  559. but how

  560. many of

  561. our

  562. brothers

  563. and sisters

  564. around the

  565. world

  566. face this

  567. as a

  568. daily

  569. reality

  570. they know

  571. physical

  572. suffering

  573. they know

  574. what it means

  575. to be

  576. beaten

  577. they know

  578. what it

  579. means to

  580. be spat

  581. at

  582. they know

  583. what it

  584. means to

  585. be mocked

  586. I don't know

  587. about you

  588. but I find

  589. that one of

  590. the hardest

  591. things in my

  592. own prayer

  593. times

  594. to raise

  595. my eyes

  596. to lift

  597. my mind

  598. to things

  599. above

  600. just me

  601. and mine

  602. how often

  603. do I just

  604. never think

  605. about my

  606. brothers and

  607. sisters in

  608. Christ

  609. as they

  610. suffer for

  611. their faith

  612. in the other

  613. side of the

  614. world

  615. for that's

  616. the truth

  617. isn't it

  618. that the

  619. same spirit

  620. of God

  621. that lives

  622. in me

  623. is the

  624. same spirit

  625. of God

  626. that lives

  627. in my

  628. brother and

  629. sister in

  630. North Korea

  631. one of

  632. the things

  633. that we've

  634. tried to

  635. do

  636. practically

  637. in our

  638. small group

  639. as we

  640. meet

  641. is to

  642. pray for

  643. the unreached

  644. people groups

  645. in the

  646. world

  647. and to

  648. pray for

  649. the

  650. persecuted

  651. church

  652. what we

  653. do is

  654. we've only

  655. been doing

  656. it the last

  657. couple of

  658. meets

  659. but someone

  660. will go

  661. away and

  662. will research

  663. a persecuted

  664. country in

  665. the world

  666. they will

  667. research it

  668. bring it

  669. to the

  670. group

  671. and they'll

  672. lead us

  673. in praying

  674. for the

  675. country

  676. well

  677. last time

  678. we met

  679. Sarah

  680. who's not

  681. here this

  682. morning so I

  683. won't

  684. embarrass her

  685. she was

  686. telling us

  687. about the

  688. church in

  689. India

  690. the last

  691. year I'll

  692. just read

  693. this out

  694. to you

  695. it was

  696. estimated

  697. that 15

  698. Christians

  699. were attacked

  700. every week

  701. because of

  702. their faith

  703. in Jesus

  704. Christ

  705. she was

  706. telling us

  707. about a

  708. new Hindu

  709. government

  710. which is

  711. in India

  712. who are

  713. seeking to

  714. make it

  715. statewide

  716. illegal

  717. to convert

  718. from Hinduism

  719. to any

  720. other religion

  721. and you can

  722. imagine if

  723. you're a

  724. Hindu and you

  725. come to

  726. faith in

  727. Christ

  728. that's going

  729. to lead to

  730. immense

  731. problems

  732. in your

  733. life

  734. and that's

  735. going to

  736. lead to

  737. immense

  738. suffering

  739. not just

  740. from the

  741. state but

  742. also from

  743. your family

  744. as well

  745. and it

  746. was a

  747. sobering

  748. privilege to

  749. sit there as

  750. a group of

  751. believers in

  752. Edinburgh

  753. and not only to

  754. identify with

  755. believers in

  756. India

  757. but to pray

  758. for them

  759. and to pray

  760. what?

  761. Well that they

  762. would know God

  763. as their

  764. strength

  765. and that they

  766. would know

  767. him as an

  768. ever-present

  769. help in

  770. time of

  771. need

  772. and that

  773. God

  774. by his

  775. grace and

  776. in his

  777. mercy would

  778. stand over

  779. them and

  780. protect them

  781. as his

  782. people

  783. and wouldn't

  784. that be a

  785. wonderful thing

  786. to become part

  787. of our DNA

  788. as a church

  789. community

  790. that we pray

  791. for our

  792. brothers and

  793. sisters around

  794. the world

  795. that we pray

  796. for our

  797. area

  798. that we pray

  799. for our

  800. nation

  801. that we pray

  802. for our

  803. world

  804. now you're

  805. probably thinking

  806. how do I

  807. do that

  808. where do I

  809. start

  810. well

  811. just printed

  812. off this

  813. morning

  814. Adam printed

  815. a ton of

  816. them off

  817. the world

  818. watch list

  819. that's produced

  820. by Open

  821. Doors

  822. you can grab

  823. it on the

  824. way out

  825. before you

  826. go this

  827. morning

  828. and it

  829. lists the

  830. 50 hardest

  831. places to

  832. be a

  833. Christian

  834. and the

  835. thing is

  836. I read

  837. this this

  838. week

  839. is not

  840. only did I

  841. know

  842. and this

  843. was to my

  844. shame

  845. not only did

  846. I not

  847. know that

  848. some of

  849. these countries

  850. would be on

  851. this list

  852. but I

  853. didn't even

  854. know some

  855. of these

  856. countries

  857. existed

  858. let's get

  859. praying for

  860. our brothers

  861. and sisters

  862. who know

  863. the trials

  864. and who know

  865. the flames

  866. because of

  867. their trust

  868. in God

  869. this is the

  870. pattern of

  871. our persecuted

  872. and pierced

  873. king

  874. but as we

  875. return to

  876. the psalm

  877. this morning

  878. just as we

  879. finish off

  880. I wonder

  881. how you

  882. square the

  883. circle

  884. that David

  885. was delivered

  886. from death

  887. but Jesus

  888. Christ

  889. the true

  890. king of

  891. psalm 22

  892. was not

  893. delivered

  894. from death

  895. how do you

  896. make sense

  897. of that

  898. one

  899. let me

  900. take you

  901. back just

  902. to the

  903. word that

  904. we were

  905. thinking about

  906. earlier on

  907. an ultra

  908. crepidarian

  909. now I'll be

  910. honest I was

  911. a little bit

  912. cheeky there

  913. and I only

  914. gave you half

  915. of its

  916. definition

  917. Calum

  918. am I

  919. right

  920. I'm

  921. right

  922. actually an

  923. ultra

  924. crepidarian

  925. is somebody

  926. who offers

  927. advice but

  928. it's someone

  929. who offers

  930. advice not

  931. knowing the

  932. full wisdom

  933. of the

  934. picture

  935. let me

  936. take you

  937. back to

  938. Joseph

  939. picture him

  940. outside that

  941. village

  942. bruised

  943. perplexed

  944. distressed

  945. battered

  946. looks to

  947. you what

  948. should I

  949. do

  950. well here's

  951. how I

  952. would have

  953. advised him

  954. run a mile

  955. mate

  956. head down

  957. coat on

  958. chin up

  959. ship out

  960. here's

  961. what happened

  962. to him

  963. he goes

  964. back into

  965. the village

  966. and he

  967. speaks

  968. and this

  969. time people

  970. attacked him

  971. before he

  972. even had a

  973. chance to

  974. open his

  975. mouth

  976. and it's

  977. recorded his

  978. testimony is

  979. that before he

  980. felt unconscious

  981. the last thing he

  982. remembers hearing

  983. is a woman

  984. crying

  985. and he wakes

  986. up

  987. and he was

  988. in his

  989. own bed

  990. and the

  991. same people

  992. who were

  993. trying to

  994. attack him

  995. are now

  996. standing over

  997. him and

  998. weeping and

  999. trying to

  1000. nurse him

  1001. back to

  1002. life

  1003. now why

  1004. well because

  1005. God had

  1006. used Joseph's

  1007. life

  1008. to convert

  1009. the entire

  1010. village to

  1011. Christ

  1012. I find it

  1013. sobering to

  1014. know that

  1015. God's ways

  1016. are higher

  1017. than my

  1018. ways

  1019. I find it

  1020. humbling to

  1021. know that

  1022. God's wisdom

  1023. is not my

  1024. wisdom

  1025. I find it

  1026. so encouraging

  1027. to know that

  1028. God's plan

  1029. is better

  1030. than my

  1031. plan

  1032. I find it

  1033. so awesome

  1034. to know that

  1035. his purposes

  1036. are unstoppable

  1037. for his

  1038. glory

  1039. and so

  1040. sovereign and

  1041. good is our

  1042. God that he

  1043. uses man's

  1044. worst and he

  1045. turns it into

  1046. his best

  1047. do we not

  1048. know that so

  1049. beautifully as

  1050. we look at the

  1051. cross

  1052. here is a

  1053. king over

  1054. whom the

  1055. world shouted

  1056. defeated

  1057. but in actual

  1058. fact here

  1059. was a

  1060. king's

  1061. death

  1062. that shouted

  1063. victory

  1064. here is a

  1065. God whose

  1066. plans appeared

  1067. to be

  1068. thwarted

  1069. but in actual

  1070. fact here

  1071. is a

  1072. God who

  1073. is gloriously

  1074. accomplishing

  1075. his plans

  1076. did you

  1077. remember I

  1078. said a few

  1079. weeks ago

  1080. when we

  1081. started this

  1082. psalm that

  1083. it moves

  1084. from the

  1085. minor key

  1086. to the

  1087. major key

  1088. well as we

  1089. hit the

  1090. end of

  1091. verse 21

  1092. we've hit

  1093. the lowest

  1094. note in

  1095. the minor

  1096. key

  1097. verse 22

  1098. we'll see

  1099. next week

  1100. a massive

  1101. key change

  1102. and what

  1103. we're going

  1104. to see over

  1105. the next

  1106. few weeks

  1107. is that God

  1108. will use

  1109. this apparent

  1110. moment of

  1111. defeat

  1112. to gather

  1113. people from

  1114. around the

  1115. world

  1116. men and

  1117. women

  1118. boys and

  1119. girls

  1120. throughout the

  1121. generations

  1122. all those

  1123. who look

  1124. on the

  1125. sun

  1126. will have

  1127. life in

  1128. his name

  1129. God will

  1130. use this

  1131. moment of

  1132. defeat

  1133. apparent

  1134. defeat

  1135. to accomplish

  1136. his greatest

  1137. victory

  1138. the apostle

  1139. Paul

  1140. let's end

  1141. with these

  1142. words

  1143. Romans 11

  1144. oh the

  1145. depth

  1146. of the

  1147. riches

  1148. and wisdom

  1149. and knowledge

  1150. of God

  1151. how unsearchable

  1152. are his

  1153. judgments

  1154. and how

  1155. inscrutable

  1156. are his

  1157. ways

  1158. for who

  1159. has known

  1160. the mind

  1161. of the

  1162. Lord

  1163. or who

  1164. has been

  1165. his

  1166. counselor

  1167. or who

  1168. has given

  1169. a gift

  1170. to him

  1171. that he

  1172. might be

  1173. repaid

  1174. for from

  1175. him

  1176. and through

  1177. him

  1178. and to

  1179. him

  1180. are all

  1181. things

  1182. to him

  1183. be glory

  1184. forever

  1185. amen

  1186. well just

  1187. before we

  1188. close

  1189. here's what

  1190. I want

  1191. to do

  1192. this

  1193. morning

  1194. I'd love

  1195. us to

  1196. pray

  1197. in response

  1198. to some

  1199. of the

  1200. things

  1201. that we've

  1202. seen

  1203. I'm just

  1204. going to

  1205. ask three

  1206. people

  1207. if I'm

  1208. right

  1209. I'm thinking

  1210. Fiona

  1211. Andy

  1212. and Ali

  1213. who are

  1214. just going

  1215. to come

  1216. up and

  1217. they're

  1218. going to

  1219. lead us

  1220. in three

  1221. quick short

  1222. prayers

  1223. for some

  1224. of the

  1225. things

  1226. we've

  1227. been

  1228. looking

  1229. at

  1230. to give

  1231. thanks

  1232. for our

  1233. victorious

  1234. king

  1235. to pray

  1236. for us

  1237. as a

  1238. church

  1239. as we

  1240. stand in

  1241. this

  1242. world

  1243. that stands

  1244. against

  1245. us

  1246. and to

  1247. pray for

  1248. our

  1249. brothers

  1250. and sisters

  1251. around the

  1252. world

  1253. who are

  1254. really

  1255. feeling

  1256. the heat

  1257. and facing

  1258. the flames

  1259. because of

  1260. their trust

  1261. in Christ

  1262. so guys

  1263. you want to

  1264. come up

  1265. let's pray

  1266. together

  1267. our father

  1268. we thank you

  1269. that Jesus

  1270. blood has

  1271. washed away

  1272. our sins

  1273. we thank you

  1274. that your

  1275. wrath is

  1276. completely

  1277. satisfied

  1278. we thank

  1279. you that

  1280. though we

  1281. were your

  1282. enemies now

  1283. we're seated

  1284. at your

  1285. table

  1286. oh death

  1287. where is

  1288. your sting

  1289. our

  1290. resurrected

  1291. king

  1292. has rendered

  1293. you

  1294. defeated

  1295. and we

  1296. sing

  1297. hallelujah

  1298. the lamb

  1299. is on the

  1300. throne

  1301. he is risen

  1302. he is alive

  1303. and we

  1304. thank you

  1305. father

  1306. amen

  1307. lord we

  1308. just thank

  1309. you for

  1310. the

  1311. immense

  1312. privilege

  1313. it is to

  1314. be part

  1315. of your

  1316. church

  1317. we thank

  1318. you for

  1319. the immense

  1320. privilege

  1321. it is to

  1322. have been

  1323. purchased

  1324. by your

  1325. son's

  1326. precious

  1327. blood

  1328. thank you

  1329. for the

  1330. unbelievable

  1331. joy of

  1332. being

  1333. adopted

  1334. into your

  1335. family as

  1336. sons and

  1337. daughters of

  1338. christ

  1339. and we

  1340. just pray

  1341. that you

  1342. would use

  1343. this lord

  1344. that you

  1345. would

  1346. use the

  1347. gifts

  1348. that we

  1349. would use

  1350. the gifts

  1351. that you've

  1352. given to us

  1353. lord

  1354. that we

  1355. wouldn't

  1356. hide them

  1357. away

  1358. that we

  1359. would have

  1360. a real

  1361. heart for

  1362. others lord

  1363. a heart

  1364. for reaching

  1365. out beyond

  1366. this place

  1367. lord into

  1368. a city

  1369. that is

  1370. so often

  1371. filled with

  1372. despair

  1373. lord with

  1374. sin and

  1375. with a

  1376. rejection of

  1377. you lord

  1378. we pray

  1379. that we

  1380. would have

  1381. a real

  1382. heart as

  1383. a church

  1384. together

  1385. to take

  1386. your message

  1387. of reconciliation

  1388. out of

  1389. this building

  1390. lord and

  1391. into the

  1392. city

  1393. we pray

  1394. that as

  1395. a church

  1396. we would

  1397. know real

  1398. fellowship lord

  1399. that we

  1400. would support

  1401. each other

  1402. and care

  1403. for each

  1404. other lord

  1405. that we

  1406. would

  1407. really show

  1408. each other

  1409. love in

  1410. our lives

  1411. and lord

  1412. we just pray

  1413. that we

  1414. would fully

  1415. rely on

  1416. you for

  1417. everything

  1418. that everything

  1419. that is done

  1420. here would

  1421. be done for

  1422. your glory

  1423. and for

  1424. the glory

  1425. of your

  1426. name

  1427. amen

  1432. the church

  1433. across the

  1434. world lord

  1435. where

  1436. persecution

  1437. is horrendous

  1438. we want to

  1439. pray for the

  1440. church in

  1441. Syria

  1442. where

  1443. criminal

  1444. christians

  1445. have been

  1446. displaced

  1447. and put

  1448. into

  1449. camps

  1450. we want

  1451. to pray

  1452. that

  1453. their

  1454. wisdom

  1455. and their

  1456. life

  1457. will shine

  1458. out for

  1459. you lord

  1468. government

  1469. we want

  1470. to pray

  1471. for the

  1472. prime minister

  1473. there

  1474. that he

  1475. would

  1476. soften

  1477. his heart

  1478. and that

  1479. he would

  1480. let the

  1481. church

  1482. be able

  1483. to thrive

  1484. there and

  1485. grow

  1504. to pray

  1505. for some

  1506. parts of

  1508. where your

  1509. church is

  1510. really

  1511. growing

  1512. lord

  1521. them remember

  1522. even through

  1523. death

  1525. has lost

  1526. its sting

  1527. there is

  1528. no victory

  1529. in death

  1530. because

  1531. Jesus Christ
