  1. Well, good evening everyone, and it is lovely to see you. My name is Graham, I work here at the church,

  2. and if this is your first time maybe at Brunswick, if you're a visitor, then it is lovely to welcome you to our church this Good Friday.

  3. Thank you so much for everyone who's participated so far, for those who have read, for the band in leading us in singing.

  4. It has been so helpful just to focus our minds on Jesus Christ crucified that we come here to remember.

  5. But I want to start this evening by asking you to think about if there is anyone here that has a surname,

  6. or who has had a surname, that reveals something about you.

  7. Now, I'll give you an example. So, my wife's maiden name is Griffith Jones, and she wouldn't marry me until I could spell it, okay?

  8. So, G-R-U-F-F-Y-D-D, Jones. Now, what does that reveal about her? Anybody?

  9. She is Welsh. There's Welsh blood in her family. In fact, it's her dad who is mad Welsh.

  10. And he phoned me a few months ago, and he said, Graham, he's got an English accent, but he is Welsh.

  11. Graham, how do you fancy going to the rugby? Coming up to Edinburgh in a few weeks' time, how do you fancy going to rugby?

  12. Now, I must admit, I'm not massively into rugby. I'm more into the sport with the proper round-shaped ball rather than the one that looks like an egg.

  13. But he was paying, and I said, I'd love to go to the rugby.

  14. And we come to match day, and we start walking to Murrayfield. We start walking to the ground, and I leave the house totally disinterested in the game.

  15. But three hours later, I leave fully enthused about the game of rugby.

  16. Now, why was that? Well, we won. That helped.

  17. But what really got me into the game, what really got me into the game of rugby was the passion of the crowd.

  18. A passionate crowd. They were there, cheering on their team. A passionate crowd.

  19. When was the last time you found yourself amongst a passionate crowd?

  20. Well, here's what I want to do this evening, just over the next 15 or so minutes, is just as we think about Jesus on the cross,

  21. as we think about everything that happened that first Good Friday, I want us to think about two very passionate crowds.

  22. And they're two very different crowds, in two very different places, who are shouting two very different things.

  23. Now, why? Well, because they have two very different opinions on who Jesus Christ is.

  24. And it's the Apostle John that tells us about these two very different and two very passionate crowds.

  25. And if you've got your Bibles there, maybe you can track with me this evening.

  26. And the first passionate crowd that I want us to think about is that angry crowd that we meet in John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  27. Now, what is this crowd's take on Jesus?

  28. Verse 4 of chapter 19.

  29. John records this.

  30. Pilate went out again and said to them,

  31. See, I am bringing him, that is Jesus, out to you that you might know that I found no guilt in him.

  32. So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.

  33. Pilate said to them,

  34. Behold the man.

  35. When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out,

  36. Crucify him!

  37. Crucify him!

  38. Now, what is the shout of this passionate crowd?

  39. Crucify him!

  40. In fact, it's interesting, if you've got John chapter 19 open there,

    John 19 chapter mention

  41. that every time we meet this crowd and their interactions with Pilate,

  42. we are told that they are shouting.

  43. Three times, in fact, we are told that they shout.

  44. This crowd, made up of chief priests and Jewish leaders,

  45. now they are baying for Jesus' blood.

  46. What do they demand is the fate of this man, Jesus Christ.

  47. What do they want to happen?

  48. Well, crucifixion.

  49. That brutal Roman execution method,

  50. this prolonged and agonizing form of death,

  51. reserved for those of the lowest standing.

  52. Now, we've got to ask, haven't we,

  53. why are they baying for this man's blood?

  54. Well, you read John's gospel.

  55. He's been building up to it at this point.

  56. We see that this crowd are passionate and angry

  57. because they have concluded two truths about Jesus.

  58. They've concluded in their minds two things about Jesus.

  59. Firstly, that he is a liar.

  60. This man,

  61. this man who claimed not just to be from Galilee,

  62. but this man who claimed to have come

  63. from the very presence of the Father,

  64. to have come from heaven itself.

  65. This man who's been claiming to be the one

  66. who was with God in the beginning.

  67. This man who's come

  68. and he's claiming to be the only one

  69. who has come to show us the Father.

  70. And this man who has the audacity to come

  71. and to claim that he is the only way to the Father.

  72. What absolute arrogance,

  73. what utter blasphemy.

  74. Jesus is a liar.

  75. It's the first thing they've concluded.

  76. Second thing they've concluded

  77. is that Jesus is a threat.

  78. This man who's come in here

  79. and he's been flipping over tables

  80. and calling our temple his Father's house.

  81. This man who's strolled in to our lives

  82. and who is calling us

  83. to change our ways

  84. and to examine our hearts.

  85. This man who's calling us to repentance.

  86. And this man who is associating

  87. with the wrong kind of people.

  88. And this man who people are beginning to believe.

  89. And this man who people are beginning to follow.

  90. Well, we will not have this man as our king.

  91. And so this crowd,

  92. this passionate crowd,

  93. this first passionate crowd that we meet

  94. shout, crucify him.

  95. Crucify him.

  96. They reject him.

  97. Fulfilling everything that John had said

  98. at the beginning of his gospel

  99. that Jesus, he came to his own

  100. and his own did not receive him.

  101. But as we were singing in one of those hymns

  102. just a few moments ago,

  103. it wasn't just his own who did not receive him.

  104. The world did not receive him.

  105. He came as the light

  106. into our world of darkness.

  107. And the darkness wanted nothing to do

  108. with the light.

  109. The creator, he stooped down

  110. into creation

  111. to deal

  112. with his

  113. creature's mess.

  114. And yet we wanted nothing

  115. to do with him.

  116. As Charles Wesley famously said in this hymn,

  117. "'Tis mystery all,

  118. the immortal

  119. dies."

  120. And that's why,

  121. as we hear this passionate shout

  122. of this first crowd,

  123. well, we can see ourselves

  124. in this picture.

  125. This rejection

  126. was our

  127. rejection of him.

  128. The darkness

  129. that drove

  130. him to the cross

  131. was,

  132. it was our

  133. darkness.

  134. The sin

  135. that he

  136. came to deal with

  137. and to die for

  138. on the cross,

  139. that was our

  140. sin.

  141. So this first

  142. angry,

  143. passionate crowd,

  144. they look at Jesus

  145. and they shout,

  146. crucify

  147. him.

  148. And so Jesus

  149. endures the most

  150. hideous form of

  151. torture

  152. in all its

  153. fullness

  154. and ugliness.

  155. Now I wonder if you've ever

  156. asked yourself

  157. why we call this day

  158. Good Friday.

  159. Have you ever

  160. asked that?

  161. I mean,

  162. I was thinking on it

  163. this week,

  164. I've got an imagination

  165. that kind of goes

  166. from time to time.

  167. I'm trying to imagine

  168. that I was in,

  169. had a time machine

  170. and I somehow

  171. managed to get back

  172. to this day,

  173. AD 33,

  174. and I was able

  175. to meet some of

  176. the original

  177. disciples.

  178. And I'm asking them,

  179. listen,

  180. followers of Jesus,

  181. centuries down the line,

  182. generations later,

  183. we're going to,

  184. we're going to have

  185. one adjective

  186. that's going to describe

  187. this day that we mark

  188. Jesus' death

  189. as we remember it.

  190. Could you guess

  191. what that adjective is?

  192. Is it bleak Friday?

  193. No, it's not bleak Friday.

  194. Is it,

  195. is it dark Friday?

  196. No, it's not dark Friday.

  197. Is it despondent Friday?

  198. No, it's not despondent Friday.

  199. Is it ghastly Friday?

  200. No, it's not ghastly Friday.

  201. Come on,

  202. just put me out of my misery.

  203. What is the word?

  204. What is the adjective?

  205. Well, it's good Friday.

  206. Okay.

  207. Good Friday.

  208. Good Friday.

  209. I imagine that they would

  210. have been perplexed

  211. and they would have

  212. most likely been

  213. massively offended

  214. because of the suffering,

  215. shame and rejection

  216. that they had just witnessed.

  217. The man that they thought

  218. who had come to save

  219. their nation

  220. and their world

  221. had just endured.

  222. Have you ever asked

  223. that question?

  224. Why do we call this day

  225. Good Friday?

  226. Well, let me take you

  227. to the second passionate crowd

  228. that John tells us about.

  229. And it's this crowd

  230. that we read of

  231. in Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  232. Verse 6,

  233. John tells us about this crowd

  234. as he describes

  235. what he sees

  236. in the courts of heaven.

  237. Revelation 5

  238. and beginning at verse 6,

  239. this is what he sees.

  240. And between the throne

  241. and the four living creatures

  242. and among the elders,

  243. I saw

  244. a lamb

  245. standing

  246. as though it had been slain

  247. with seven horns

  248. and

  249. with seven eyes

  250. which are the seven spirits

  251. of God

  252. sent out into all the earth.

  253. And he went

  254. and took the scroll

  255. from the right hand

  256. of him

  257. who was seated

  258. on the throne.

  259. And when he had taken

  260. the scroll,

  261. the four living creatures

  262. and the twenty-four elders

  263. fell down

  264. before the lamb,

  265. each holding a harp

  266. and golden bowls

  267. full of incense

  268. which are the prayers

  269. of the saints.

  270. You see this crowd?

  271. This heavenly crowd

  272. of elders

  273. and creatures.

  274. Now,

  275. John goes on

  276. and he records

  277. what he hears.

  278. So what is the shout

  279. of this passionate crowd?

  280. Well,

  281. here's the amazing thing.

  282. The shout of this crowd

  283. is not one of accusation.

  284. The shout of this crowd

  285. is one of adoration.

  286. Look what he records

  287. and this crowd,

  288. they sang a new song

  289. saying,

  290. worthy are you

  291. to take the scroll

  292. and to open its seals

  293. for you were slain

  294. and by your blood

  295. you ransomed people

  296. for God

  297. from every tribe

  298. and language

  299. and people

  300. and nation

  301. and you

  302. have made them

  303. a kingdom

  304. and priest

  305. to our God

  306. and they shall reign

  307. on the earth.

  308. Now,

  309. what is this crowd's

  310. take on Jesus?

  311. What is their

  312. passionate shout?

  313. Well,

  314. the first crowd's

  315. shout was crucify him.

  316. This crowd's shout

  317. is worship him.

  318. Worship him.

  319. And would you track

  320. with me,

  321. would you notice

  322. just a few things

  323. about this shout?

  324. What do they

  325. declare

  326. the slain lamb

  327. to be?

  328. What do they

  329. declare Jesus

  330. to be?

  331. Worthy.

  332. Why is he worthy?

  333. Two reasons.

  334. Firstly,

  335. because he was slain.

  336. What did Jesus do?

  337. Do you see the language

  338. there?

  339. We've already sang it.

  340. He purchased.

  341. That is,

  342. he paid a price

  343. to buy something.

  344. Now,

  345. who did he purchase?

  346. Well,

  347. do you see it there?

  348. He purchased

  349. a people

  350. a people

  351. from

  352. every tribe

  353. and tongue

  354. and language

  355. and nation.

  356. This is a global people,

  357. a universal people.

  358. And with what

  359. did he purchase them?

  360. With his precious blood.

  361. And here's

  362. the million dollar question.

  363. It's one that my two-year-old

  364. at the minute

  365. is always asking,

  366. why?

  367. Why did he purchase them?

  368. Why did he purchase them?

  369. Well,

  370. would you see that this purchase

  371. wasn't purposeless?

  372. As Jesus died on the cross,

  373. if I can put it ever so reverently,

  374. it was no act of meaningless martyrdom.

  375. His death was not a symbolic gesture

  376. of goodwill.

  377. Why did he purchase a people?

  378. For what end?

  379. Well,

  380. do you see it there?

  381. encapsulated in those two

  382. most beautiful

  383. and potent words.

  384. Why did he purchase them?

  385. For God.

  386. For God.

  387. That is the purpose

  388. of the cross.

  389. That Jesus defeated,

  390. as we've been singing,

  391. the power,

  392. he defeated the power of sin.

  393. That Jesus crushed

  394. the stronghold

  395. of Satan.

  396. He is the serpent crusher

  397. that we're reading about

  398. in Genesis 3.

  399. Not so that his people

  400. could be simply forgiven,

  401. but so that they could be

  402. restored and adopted.

  403. He purchased his people

  404. for God.

  405. The God who created

  406. all things.

  407. The God who made us

  408. in his image.

  409. Who made us male and female

  410. in his image.

  411. The God who created us.

  412. Humanity for our relationship

  413. with him.

  414. And this holy God

  415. from whom

  416. we were separated

  417. because of our sin.

  418. Is this God

  419. that Jesus came

  420. to reconcile us to.

  421. And so what does that mean?

  422. Well, it means

  423. today as we remember

  424. that first Good Fridays,

  425. we remember

  426. as we picture Jesus

  427. on the cross,

  428. what do we see there?

  429. Well, we see

  430. the throbbing heart

  431. of a loving

  432. heavenly father

  433. who is desperate

  434. to win his people

  435. to himself.

  436. Now, here's the incredible thing.

  437. Said earlier

  438. that as we thought

  439. about that first

  440. passionate shouting crowd,

  441. he shouted,

  442. crucify him,

  443. that we could see ourselves

  444. in that picture.

  445. Well, here's the amazing thing.

  446. The incredible news

  447. is that by God's

  448. quite staggering

  449. and amazing grace,

  450. that as we look

  451. at this passionate

  452. and adoring crowd,

  453. that we can see ourselves

  454. in this picture.

  455. We are part,

  456. get your heads around this,

  457. we are part of this people

  458. that Jesus Christ

  459. has purchased for God.

  460. And is it not incredible

  461. to think today

  462. that as we sit here,

  463. that we are part

  464. of a people,

  465. not only numerous

  466. around our city

  467. and around our nation

  468. and around our continent,

  469. but we are part

  470. of a people

  471. numerous around the globe

  472. that God has won

  473. to himself,

  474. celebrating,

  475. we celebrate

  476. the life that we have

  477. with God

  478. through Jesus Christ

  479. because of this

  480. slain lamb.

  481. That's what's good

  482. about Good Friday.

  483. It was Pastor

  484. Frederick Leahy

  485. who said this

  486. as he thought

  487. about the cross

  488. and let's finish

  489. with these words.

  490. As we stand

  491. in thought

  492. before that cross,

  493. our emotions

  494. are mixed.

  495. And this is what he says.

  496. Oh, how dreadful

  497. and yet how wondrous

  498. is this place.

  499. Two very passionate crowds,

  500. two very different crowds

  501. in two very different places

  502. with two very different shouts

  503. about Jesus.

  504. Let me leave you

  505. with this question.

  506. What is the shout

  507. of your heart

  508. this evening

  509. as you remember

  510. Jesus on the cross?

  511. Does Good Friday

  512. find your heart

  513. in good form?

  514. Does Good Friday

  515. find your heart

  516. in good spirits

  517. and good voice?

  518. Why?

  519. Because the lamb

  520. was slain

  521. to buy us,

  522. to purchase us,

  523. to reconcile us

  524. for God.

  525. Just before we

  526. just close

  527. with a reading

  528. from Romans 5,

  529. why don't we just take

  530. just a few moments

  531. just to be quiet

  532. and let's still

  533. ourselves

  534. and just reflect

  535. on what we've heard

  536. from God's word

  537. this evening.

  538. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6–11

  539. verses 6 to 11.

  540. for while

  541. we were still

  542. weak

  543. at the right time

  544. Christ died

  545. for the ungodly.

  546. For one

  547. will scarcely

  548. die for a righteous

  549. person,

  550. though perhaps

  551. for a good person

  552. one would dare

  553. even to die.

  554. But God

  555. shows his love

  556. for us

  557. in this

  558. that while

  559. we were still

  560. sinners,

  561. Christ died

  562. for us.

  563. Father,

  564. we thank you

  565. so much

  566. for your

  567. amazing grace

  568. to us.

  569. Oh,

  570. this,

  571. the power

  572. of the cross

  573. that Christ

  574. became sin

  575. for us.

  576. He took the blame,

  577. he bore the wrath.

  578. We stand

  579. forgiven at the cross.

  580. Lord,

  581. what a great

  582. and awesome

  583. God you are.

  584. Father,

  585. help us never

  586. to lose the wonder

  587. of Good Friday.

  588. Lord,

  589. be with us

  590. the rest of our

  591. time together,

  592. we ask in Jesus'

  593. name.

  594. Amen.
