  1. Okay, good evening everyone.

  2. Good evening.

  3. Good evening.

  4. Okay, so I wonder if you can think of a time when someone has inspired you to do something

  5. by what they've said.

  6. It has become quite common for businesses and various institutions to hire in a business

  7. expert or guru or motivational speaker to come and inspire their employees to take on

  8. some new initiative, to motivate them to make more sales or close more deals or whatever

  9. it is they need to do to make the company more money.

  10. Now when it comes to a motivational speaker, the first thing I would want to hear is who

  11. are they and what have they done?

  12. Have they done something to warrant me taking the time to listen to them?

  13. And if they're there to inspire me, then I want to know that they've actually done something

  14. inspiring.

  15. Now once I know there's a reason to really listen, then I can start to evaluate what they're

  16. saying and work out if what they're saying rings true and holds together as a coherent

  17. set of ideas.

  18. But when it comes to any kind of expert advice, listening alone is not enough.

  19. If I've heard something that's inspired me, well then I would actually need to do something

  20. about it.

  21. Tonight, let me tell you that you're going to hear from someone more inspiring than the

  22. most expensive business guru or the top motivational speaker and you're going to have to decide what

  23. you're going to do about what you've heard.

  24. Now you might be sitting there thinking, letting Peter preach a sermon has really gone to his

  25. head.

  26. But believe me when I say that I'm telling the truth because I'm not talking about myself.

  27. I'm not even talking about King David, the author of the psalm we're going to look at.

  28. I'm talking about God.

  29. So let's listen to what God has to say through the hand of David and let's think about who

  30. God is and what he's done, what he's said and what we should do in response.

  31. So let's look at Psalm 19.

  32. Turn to it with me, please, if you can.

  33. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  34. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  35. Day after day they pour forth speech.

  36. Night after night they reveal knowledge.

  37. They have no speech.

  38. They use no words.

  39. No sound is heard from them.

  40. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth.

  41. Their words to the end of the world.

  42. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

  43. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber.

  44. Like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

  45. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other.

  46. Nothing is deprived of its warmth.

  47. The law of the Lord is perfect.

  48. Refreshing the soul.

  49. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy.

  50. Making wise the simple.

  51. The precepts of the Lord are right.

  52. Giving joy to the heart.

  53. The commands of the Lord are radiant.

  54. Giving light to the eyes.

  55. The fear of the Lord is pure.

  56. Enduring forever.

  57. The decrees of the Lord are firm.

  58. And all of them are righteous.

  59. They are more precious than gold.

  60. Than much pure gold.

  61. They are sweeter than honey.

  62. Than honey from the honeycomb.

  63. By them your servant is warned.

  64. In keeping them there is a great reward.

  65. But who can discern their own errors?

  66. Forgive my hidden faults.

  67. Keep your servant also from willful sins.

  68. May they not rule over me.

  69. Then I will be blameless.

  70. Innocent of great transgression.

  71. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight.

  72. Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

  73. Let's pray.

  74. Lord, I thank you for the opportunity to come together and look at your word and consider it for ourselves.

  75. And I pray like David.

  76. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight.

  77. Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

  78. Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

  79. So, let's start by looking at the first six verses of this psalm.

  80. And let's see whether this God is really worth listening to.

  81. So, how can we answer that question?

  82. Well, just like a motivational speaker, we can ask, who is he?

  83. What's he done?

  84. And we can see who God is and what he's done through creation.

  85. Through our natural world.

  86. It speaks without words.

  87. Without a voice.

  88. It tells us a lot about God.

  89. David writes,

  90. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  91. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  92. Can you picture David?

  93. David, perhaps in his shepherd days, out in the open, staring into the vastness of the night sky.

  94. Have you ever stopped to ponder the immensity and beauty of the heavens?

  95. One thing I still miss about my home, where I grew up in Northern Ireland, is the dark skies.

  96. Having grown up out in the countryside and now living in the big city,

  97. stars are much harder to see at night.

  98. And there is something magnificent about seeing a clear, dark sky with its thousands of pinprick lights.

  99. Being able to pick out the vast Milky Way or watch shooting stars streak across the sky.

  100. When we go to Altna Creek in Aviemore for the dine weekend away,

  101. I always hope for a clear sky.

  102. So that we can see the stars during our night walks.

  103. Though it can be pretty difficult to get the kids to stop,

  104. turn off their torches, their phones,

  105. and look up and let their eyes adjust

  106. so that they can really see the beauty of the night sky.

  107. And even the very scale of the universe is amazing.

  108. It's something that as a child I can remember thinking about and struggling with.

  109. How could the universe be infinite?

  110. How is it possible for space to just go on and on and on and on and on?

  111. But equally, how could it stop?

  112. How could there be nothing?

  113. How could there not even be empty space?

  114. Surely there must be something.

  115. So anyway, I just had to stop thinking about it and accept that it's beyond me.

  116. And I thought it might be worthwhile to just watch a short video.

  117. It's just three minutes long.

  118. This video, it's from an app, a phone app called Cosmic Eye.

  119. So that's why it's in portrait mode,

  120. even though we're watching it on widescreen.

  121. So forgive me that.

  122. And let's just take these three minutes

  123. to have a think about the very scale of God's universe.

  124. Okay, so hopefully that helps to just give you some idea

  125. of the scale of the universe that God has created.

  126. I just feel that even the scale of the universe

  127. tells us so much of God's power and awesomeness.

  128. So David talks about the heavens.

  129. He also talks about the skies.

  130. And the skies can provide just as many wonders,

  131. mighty towering clouds, beautiful rainbows,

  132. breathtaking sunsets, and awe-inspiring thunderstorms.

  133. I personally have always really enjoyed being in a thunderstorm

  134. with a healthy sense of the danger they pose,

  135. but nonetheless just really enjoying the raw power on display.

  136. And it points me to God's power.

  137. It just gives me a little hint of his almighty power.

  138. Now at the end of verse four,

  139. we see David turns his attention to the sun,

  140. this bridegroom, this champion.

  141. It rises at one end of the heavens

  142. and makes its circuit to the other.

  143. Nothing is deprived of its warmth.

  144. Now, perhaps David didn't know about Scotland.

  145. But in all seriousness,

  146. even here in Scotland,

  147. we are totally dependent on the sun and its warmth.

  148. Without the sun shining on the earth,

  149. it would soon freeze.

  150. It would just take a matter of weeks.

  151. And any plants without artificial light would soon die.

  152. And if you've ever experienced a solar eclipse,

  153. or even just a partial eclipse,

  154. then you'll know the eerie feeling of darkness during the day,

  155. and may well have noticed the drop in temperature that occurs

  156. even within that short time.

  157. And staying on the theme of eclipses,

  158. listen to an explanation from a NASA website explaining how an eclipse happens.

  159. eclipses occur due to the special coincidence of the moon and the sun being the same angular size.

  160. The sun is 400 times wider than the moon.

  161. But it is 400 times further away.

  162. So they coincidentally appear to be the same size in our sky.

  163. This is what allows us the phenomenal beauty of the total solar eclipse.

  164. Now you see that NASA's explanation,

  165. it recognizes the phenomenal beauty of an eclipse.

  166. But it simply puts it down to coincidence.

  167. The study of nature,

  168. both in a scientific sense and in an art sense,

  169. is a very wonderful and worthwhile thing.

  170. But when we completely miss its designer and creator,

  171. then we're in trouble.

  172. Paul tells us in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:20

  173. verse 20,

  174. For since the creation of the world,

  175. God's invisible qualities,

  176. his eternal power and divine nature,

  177. have been clearly seen,

  178. being understood from what has been made,

  179. so that people are without excuse.

  180. For although they knew God,

  181. they neither glorified him as God,

  182. nor gave thanks to him.

  183. But their thinking became futile,

  184. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  185. Although they claimed to be wise,

  186. they became fools.

  187. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,

  188. and worshipped and served created things,

  189. rather than the creator.

  190. So if you don't already,

  191. then please do take time to be amazed

  192. by God's creation.

  193. But always let it point you

  194. to God's invisible qualities.

  195. So I hope from this,

  196. you've just had a little bit of a sense

  197. that God really is worth listening to.

  198. He's worth taking the time to hear.

  199. And thankfully,

  200. God doesn't leave us

  201. with just the silent proclamation of creation.

  202. He has more to say.

  203. So we've evaluated God's work.

  204. Now let's evaluate his words.

  205. So what is God's word like?

  206. What will we see if we take the time

  207. to evaluate God's words?

  208. Perhaps it's worthwhile to picture David again,

  209. having stared into the night sky,

  210. having felt the warmth of the sun as it rises.

  211. He's been amazed at God's handiwork,

  212. and then starts to think of all that he's read

  213. or been taught from the scriptures.

  214. And when David thinks and writes about God's words,

  215. it's interesting to note

  216. that whereas before,

  217. in thinking of creation,

  218. he uses the word God,

  219. he now switches to Lord,

  220. which is actually the way

  221. God's personal name

  222. is shown in most English Bibles.

  223. It perhaps would be better rendered as Yahweh,

  224. God's personal name.

  225. But the point is

  226. that David first thinks about God's greatness,

  227. this God who created the universe,

  228. and then moves to thinking about God

  229. in personal terms.

  230. This amazing God

  231. has made himself known,

  232. not just in a big,

  233. far-off kind of way,

  234. but also in a right here,

  235. something to say about your life

  236. kind of way.

  237. God has drawn near to us

  238. in his word.

  239. And what does David make

  240. of Yahweh's words?

  241. Have a look at verses 7 to 10.

  242. Yahweh's law is perfect.

  243. His statutes are trustworthy.

  244. His precepts are right.

  245. His commands are radiant.

  246. His decrees are firm and righteous,

  247. more precious than gold,

  248. and sweeter than honey.

  249. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

  250. Perfect,

  251. trustworthy,

  252. right,

  253. radiant,

  254. firm and righteous,

  255. more precious than gold,

  256. and sweeter than honey.

  257. And what effect does David say they have?

  258. They refresh the soul.

  259. They make the simple wise.

  260. They give joy to the heart

  261. and give light to the eyes.

  262. So what is it that God says?

  263. Well, tradition gives the number of commandments

  264. in the Old Testament

  265. as 613 commands.

  266. That's rather a lot for us

  267. to consider just now.

  268. And I don't have a nice three-minute video

  269. that I can show you

  270. to amaze you with God's commands.

  271. But thankfully,

  272. Jesus summarizes

  273. all of God's law

  274. in just two commands.

  275. In Matthew chapter 22,

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  276. an expert in the law

  277. tries to test Jesus

  278. with this question.

  279. Teacher,

  280. which is the greatest command

  281. in the law?

  282. Jesus replied,

  283. Love the Lord your God

  284. with all your heart

  285. and with all your soul

  286. and with all your mind.

  287. This is the first

  288. and greatest command.

  289. And the second is like it.

  290. Love your neighbor

  291. as yourself.

  292. All the law

  293. and the prophets

  294. hang on these two commandments.

  295. Here we see

  296. the very heart

  297. of the law.

  298. This is what it's all about.

  299. Loving God

  300. and loving others.

  301. Can you imagine

  302. what the world would be like

  303. if it kept

  304. these commands?

  305. What a difference

  306. it would make.

  307. What a difference

  308. it would make

  309. to our own lives.

  310. but we have creation

  311. but we have creation

  312. and now know so much more about it.

  313. We have the completed Bible

  314. and within it we have the definitive account

  315. of Jesus' life and teachings.

  316. And in Jesus, like we sang,

  317. we have the full and final revelation of God.

  318. At the start of the service we heard from Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  319. Let's read Hebrews chapter 1 verses 1 to 3 again.

    Hebrews 1:1–3

  320. In the past, God spoke to our ancestors

  321. through the prophets at many times and in various ways.

  322. But in these last days,

  323. he has spoken to us by his Son,

  324. whom he appointed heir of all things

  325. and through whom also he made the universe.

  326. The Son is the radiance of God's glory

  327. and the exact representation of his being,

  328. sustaining all things by his powerful word.

  329. Jesus is the ultimate way

  330. that God speaks to humanity.

  331. And if you read what the Bible says about Jesus

  332. and evaluate his work and words,

  333. I think you would agree

  334. that the description David gives of God's word

  335. could pretty well apply to Jesus.

  336. Jesus is perfect.

  337. Jesus is trustworthy,

  338. right, radiant, firm and righteous,

  339. more precious than gold

  340. and sweeter than honey.

  341. Again, we see God's character in Jesus.

  342. We see it in creation.

  343. We see it in his word

  344. and we see it in Jesus.

  345. And ultimately,

  346. we see it in Jesus' death on the cross

  347. and glorious resurrection.

  348. God,

  349. God,

  350. who asks us

  351. to love him

  352. and to love others,

  353. first loved us.

  354. Romans chapter 5, verse 8,

    Romans 5:8

  355. says,

  356. God demonstrates his own love for us in this.

  357. While we were still sinners,

  358. Christ died for us.

  359. So I hope that you can see

  360. that God's words are good.

  361. If you don't already,

  362. then please do take time

  363. to read and meditate

  364. on God's word.

  365. And when you need help to understand,

  366. because we all do,

  367. please ask a member of Brunsfield.

  368. Join a home group

  369. or look for other good resources

  370. that I can point you to

  371. or Graham can point you to

  372. or many others can point you to.

  373. And I know in my life

  374. that I don't do this enough.

  375. You know,

  376. thankfully as part of my job,

  377. I have to read the Bible

  378. so I can teach it to children.

  379. I have to study passages

  380. and really kind of understand them

  381. as best I can

  382. so that I can,

  383. in a simple way,

  384. explain it to children.

  385. But there's something different

  386. about just enjoying God's word

  387. for itself.

  388. To read it

  389. and to meditate on it

  390. like David did.

  391. And that leads me on

  392. to my third and final point.

  393. So we've evaluated God's work.

  394. We've evaluated God's words.

  395. Now let's evaluate ourselves.

  396. Now if you are very keen

  397. on having three points

  398. all starting with the same letter,

  399. you can go Glasgow for this last point

  400. and say evaluating ourselves.

  401. But I'll just stick to ourselves.

  402. So what about ourselves?

  403. Like I said at the start,

  404. it's all very well hearing

  405. an inspirational speaker

  406. realizing that they're worth listening to

  407. and agreeing with what they've said.

  408. But if we don't put into practice

  409. what we've heard,

  410. then it's all a bit pointless.

  411. So what then for us?

  412. What do we see

  413. when we evaluate ourselves

  414. in light of what God has said?

  415. So let's first look

  416. at verses 11 to 13

  417. and see what David saw.

  418. David knows that God's law

  419. is a warning to him

  420. and also the way

  421. to great reward.

  422. And it shows him

  423. that we have two different kinds

  424. of problems

  425. in keeping to God's law.

  426. Hidden faults

  427. and willful sins.

  428. These hidden faults

  429. are not just faults

  430. that are hidden from others,

  431. but are actually hidden

  432. from ourselves.

  433. Who can discern

  434. their own errors?

  435. David puts it.

  436. And in a commentary I read

  437. it was put like this.

  438. The truth is

  439. you have no idea

  440. how sinful you are.

  441. Compared to God

  442. and his word

  443. we fall very short indeed.

  444. We don't need to try to sin.

  445. It will happen

  446. without us even realizing.

  447. The next problem

  448. is willful sin

  449. and the stranglehold

  450. that it can put us in.

  451. The sin where we know

  452. it's wrong

  453. but we just do it anyway.

  454. Perhaps we feel

  455. we just can't help ourselves.

  456. Or maybe we've justified it

  457. in our own minds.

  458. Or maybe we're able

  459. to downplay it

  460. and think

  461. well

  462. what we're doing

  463. is not really that bad.

  464. It could be worse.

  465. But if we're not careful

  466. it will lead us

  467. to what David describes

  468. as great transgression.

  469. You see

  470. sin can easily snowball

  471. and get out of control.

  472. So what can we do?

  473. What can be done?

  474. Firstly

  475. we need to recognize

  476. that we are not

  477. basically good.

  478. Not when we evaluate ourselves

  479. in light of God's character

  480. and word.

  481. When we ask ourselves

  482. how are we

  483. at loving God

  484. and loving others

  485. what is that evaluation like?

  486. I know

  487. when I think

  488. about myself

  489. even just loving

  490. those who love me

  491. can be so hard.

  492. Parents

  493. siblings

  494. spouse

  495. children

  496. yes I love them

  497. but

  498. at times

  499. do I really show it?

  500. No.

  501. Romans 3

  502. 23

  503. puts it like this

  504. for all have sinned

  505. and fall short

  506. of the glory

  507. of God.

  508. So

  509. like David says

  510. we need to ask

  511. for forgiveness

  512. and

  513. if we

  514. confess

  515. our sins

  516. God is

  517. faithful

  518. and just

  519. and will

  520. forgive us

  521. our sins

  522. and purify us

  523. from all

  524. unrighteousness.

  525. we also need

  526. God

  527. to keep us

  528. from willful

  529. sin

  530. and

  531. great

  532. transgression.

  533. We absolutely

  534. need God's

  535. help

  536. to overcome

  537. sin.

  538. It is not

  539. something we can

  540. do

  541. on our own

  542. and if we

  543. do these

  544. things

  545. then we

  546. will be

  547. blameless

  548. not because

  549. we're perfect

  550. but because

  551. we are

  552. forgiven
