  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It's great to see you here. What a lovely day. Thank you

  2. to all who've participated so far in our service. Could I ask you to grab your Bibles? It's

  3. so important that we have God's Word out in front of us. So whether that's a paper copy

  4. or you scroll down in your phone or iPad, whatever it is you do, then make every effort

  5. to get the Scriptures open in front of you. And Luke chapter 10 and verses 38 to halfway

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  6. through chapter 11 is where we are this morning. You should have received hopefully a sermon

  7. outline as you came in. That's going to be quite important for this morning. So if you

  8. don't have one, put your hand in the air that you just don't care and Al McIntosh will get

  9. one to you. But why don't we still ourselves as we come to this wonderful portion of Luke's

  10. Gospel that we've been in for quite a while. And let's take just a moment in our Martha

  11. world just to have a moment of Mary's stillness. Will we do that and we'll pray as we come

  12. to God's Word this morning. Let's pray.

  13. Our Father, we would thank you for this morning. And we would ask that as we come to your words

  14. now that you would help us to still ourselves, to still our hearts. Father, you would help

  15. us to focus our minds and to be ready to both receive and meet with you, we pray in Jesus'

  16. precious name. Amen.

  17. Well, to get us thinking this morning, if you had to sum up your life at present in one word,

  18. what would that word be? Why don't you just take 10 seconds, turn to your neighbor. What

  19. is that one word that you're thinking of that describes your life right now?

  20. Okay, it's 10 seconds. Put your hands up. Here's a little case study this morning. Put

  21. your hands up if that word was the word busy. Come on, show of hands. How many of us that

  22. was the word busy describes our life just now? Right in the air. So just have a look around

  23. and take that in. Because we are a busy people. You can put your hands down now. We are a busy

  24. people. It's one of the buzzwords of our day, isn't it? Our generation busy. We are always,

  25. always busy. Everybody's busy. Everyone I talk to is busy. Even in pastoral ministry,

  26. when you go to minister's conferences, how do people respond? How are you? Oh, I'm busy.

  27. We're always busy. In fact, I heard someone the other day refer to our always on world. Our phones

  28. are never off. Our alerts are always going. Our minds are always active. We live in an always

  29. on busy world. Well, here's the question that I want us to think about this morning.

  30. What are we busy with? There are, I don't know if you've ever stopped to think about this, there

  31. are 10,080 minutes in a week. Just think to yourself, what do you fill them with? What are

  32. you busy doing? Here's the challenge that God's word would bring to us this morning as those who are

  33. following Jesus Christ? Are we making room in our busy lives for the things which matter most?

  34. Now, if you remember last week, we said that we're in this kind of school of discipleship portion

  35. of Luke's gospel. And the big question that Luke's trying to get his readers to think through

  36. is what does it mean to follow this King? What does it mean to follow Jesus Christ?

  37. And last week, we looked at the parable of the Good Samaritan, and we saw that following Jesus

  38. involves sacrificially and compassionately loving and caring for those round about you as those who

  39. have been made in God's very image. But this week, if last week's question was, or discipleship lesson

  40. rather, was an external lesson, well, this week Luke gives us an internal one. And it's no accident

  41. that he's put those two right together next to each other. There's an external part to following Jesus,

  42. and there's an internal part. In other words, it's not all about doing, it's about being and knowing.

  43. What are the things which matter most? That's the question that we should be asking right about now.

  44. Well, we're going to see two things this morning that should mark our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ.

  45. What are they? Sitting and listening and stopping and praying. In other words, what will a disciple be marked by?

  46. Well, he or she will be marked by firstly, devotion, and secondly, dependence.

  47. And if you've got your Bibles there, we pick up the narrative at verse 38 of chapter 10, if you've got it there.

  48. And Jesus has been welcomed into Martha's house.

  49. And Luke tells us this story.

  50. And as he tells us this story, the focus of his story isn't as much on Jesus as it is actually on these two sisters.

  51. Do you notice that there? Firstly, who do we get in the story?

  52. Martha, the host.

  53. How would she describe her life in one word?

  54. Well, she's busy.

  55. She's busy. What's she doing?

  56. She's busy being a good host.

  57. Now, you can picture her, can't you, in the scene?

  58. She's chopping the veg.

  59. She's cooking the stew.

  60. She's setting the table.

  61. She's got Jamie Oliver's 15-minute meals out in front of her.

  62. All of that summed up in those words that Luke gives us at verse 40, if you see.

  63. Much serving.

  64. This is Martha.

  65. Much serving.

  66. That's what she's doing.

  67. But it's not what she's doing that seems to be the problem, but how she's doing it.

  68. And the way that Luke tells us the story here, it gives us the clues that we need to be able to ascertain the true state of Martha's heart.

  69. How is she?

  70. Verse 40.

  71. Distracted.

  72. Here we have a distracted sister, which I think we are led to understand means a little more than she was just a little bit flustered as she was going about her chores.

  73. It's more than that.

  74. She is overwhelmed.

  75. She's bothered and she's burdened.

  76. And do you see how it comes out?

  77. It spills out in her language.

  78. Do you see it there?

  79. Such a blessing for us in our lives, isn't it?

  80. That what makes it to our tongues is just simply a byproduct of what's going on in our hearts.

  81. What does she do?

  82. Verse 40.

  83. She confronts Jesus.

  84. Now you can picture her.

  85. She throws off her apron.

  86. She throws the dish towel on the floor.

  87. Lord.

  88. Notice what she calls him there.

  89. It's not that Mary doesn't know who he is.

  90. Lord.

  91. Lord.

  92. Do you not care?

  93. Do you not care that Mary is doing nothing?

  94. Well, I'm doing absolutely everything.

  95. Now we have to say there's a little bit of us that understands what she's saying there, doesn't it?

  96. How is Jesus going to respond?

  97. What's he going to say?

  98. Good point, Martha.

  99. Come on, Mary.

  100. You need to up your game here.

  101. No.

  102. What does he say?

  103. Would you notice the grace in Jesus' response to her?

  104. Martha, Martha.

  105. Gentle yet deeply concerned words for this woman.

  106. Verse 41.

  107. Jesus, he sees her heart.

  108. And he sees that she is anxious.

  109. And she's troubled about so many different things.

  110. But the cares of this world, the pressures of life, what are they doing?

  111. They're coming into her heart.

  112. They're choking her joy.

  113. And they're dragging her away from a right devotion to Jesus, her master.

  114. You see, it's not that the stuff that Mary is doing is bad.

  115. It's just that those things are pulling her away from what is best.

  116. Kevin DeYoung, he writes this about this passage.

  117. Martha is so busy with dinner that she's giving Jesus her spiritual leftovers.

  118. Here's Martha.

  119. She's busy.

  120. And then we get the other sister, don't we?

  121. We get Mary.

  122. And where is she in this picture?

  123. She's sitting with the right heart at Jesus' feet.

  124. She's like Greyfriars Bobby.

  125. You go and you look at his statue just up Northbridge.

  126. I pass it every day and I stop to read it this week.

  127. You see the plaque that reads,

  128. Here is the dog that faithfully followed his master.

  129. This is Mary.

  130. She's there.

  131. She's at his feet.

  132. Because we need to understand that in Jesus Christ,

  133. she's found somebody who's captivated her heart.

  134. That's why she's at the feet of Jesus.

  135. And what is she doing at the feet of Jesus?

  136. She's listening to his teaching.

  137. The very words from her master's mouth.

  138. You see, Jesus hasn't just captivated her heart.

  139. He's captivated her mind.

  140. And what does Jesus say about her?

  141. Some of the most beautiful words I think Jesus says about a human being here.

  142. What has she chosen?

  143. The good portion.

  144. The good portion.

  145. It's kind of psalmy language.

  146. The language of the psalms about close fellowship with God being the most desirable thing in one's life.

  147. Mary has chosen the good portion and Jesus commends her for it.

  148. Jesus commends her for her undistracted devotion to him and his words.

  149. And I think that as we read this story this morning, we are invited.

  150. As we look at this woman here, we are invited to ask ourselves as followers of Jesus,

  151. which one is your heart?

  152. Help us think that through.

  153. Let me ask us a couple of diagnostic heart questions.

  154. Firstly, do you detect the marks of Martha?

  155. Do you see them in your own life?

  156. Do you see anxiety clouding your heart?

  157. Do you find yourself distracted by the pressures of life?

  158. And do you notice it firstly in your actions?

  159. And particularly, do you notice it in your words?

  160. The words in your texts?

  161. And the tone of your emails, how you reply to people, and the things that you post on Facebook and Twitter,

  162. do you notice this in your words?

  163. And maybe even those internal words, those kind of mental manuscripts that we always write,

  164. the internal things that never actually make it to print.

  165. Do you see the marks of Martha in your life this morning?

  166. It's even possible to be distracted, isn't it, as we serve in church?

  167. Things of this world that we allow them to cloud us as we serve in here?

  168. Do you detect the marks of Martha?

  169. And secondly, do you desire the heart of Mary?

  170. It's a beautiful irony in this story that the one that's held up to us here never actually says a word.

  171. What did she do?

  172. Well, let me just draw your attention to two words.

  173. Mary firstly chose.

  174. That's the verb there.

  175. She chose.

  176. She presumably made the decision.

  177. And amongst all the other things that could have occupied her time,

  178. all the things that could have taken her attention and drawn her away,

  179. she decides to choose to sit at her Lord's feet and listen to his words.

  180. And according to Jesus, Mary chose that which was good.

  181. It was good.

  182. I'm sure if you'd asked her at this point,

  183. Mary, do you need to spend time with Jesus?

  184. Do you need to spend time listening to him?

  185. She would have looked at you puzzled.

  186. And she would have replied,

  187. No, I do not have to do it.

  188. I get to do it.

  189. And the question for us this morning is,

  190. as disciples,

  191. as followers of this King,

  192. do we see that choosing to spend time,

  193. making the time,

  194. to be with our Lord,

  195. with our Bibles open,

  196. listening to his word every day,

  197. is good for us?

  198. It's good for us.

  199. Just something practical.

  200. If you're looking for something to do this week,

  201. something I found really helpful is just to write the word,

  202. this is the good portion,

  203. on a post-it note,

  204. and stick it on the front of my Bible.

  205. Because it reminds me,

  206. as I come to this every morning,

  207. that this isn't a duty,

  208. this is a delight.

  209. That I get to sit at the feet of my Lord

  210. and listen to his words every morning.

  211. This is the good portion.

  212. Can I say what I found out quite transforming this week in my own life?

  213. That this is the good portion,

  214. what a great thing to be reminded of,

  215. as we come to read our Bibles every morning.

  216. Before we move to Edinburgh,

  217. Alex and I used to live in Bristol.

  218. Lovely city.

  219. And in Bristol,

  220. there's this street called Muller Road.

  221. And it's named after one of Bristol's most famous sons,

  222. George Muller.

  223. Don't even know anything about George Muller.

  224. I knew diddly-squat before I moved down to Bristol.

  225. But George Muller is a wonderful Christian man.

  226. Because as well as being a pastor and a traveling preacher,

  227. he's most famous for founding a number of orphanages

  228. in and around Bristol and further seas as well.

  229. In fact, in his lifetime,

  230. I googled it this week,

  231. he pioneered the construction of five large orphan houses

  232. and he cared for 10,024 orphans.

  233. This is George Muller.

  234. Do you see what a difference this faith made in his life?

  235. Now there's a busy man.

  236. Right?

  237. Busy man.

  238. And he wrote in his journal,

  239. he wrote,

  240. somebody asked him,

  241. how did he do all of it?

  242. How did he do all of it

  243. and serve with a heart of joy?

  244. And he writes this in his diary.

  245. He says this.

  246. Now this is wonderful if you want to listen to this.

  247. He said,

  248. I saw more clearly than ever

  249. that the first great and primary business

  250. to which I ought to attend every day

  251. was to have my soul happy in the Lord.

  252. It's another wonderful phrase.

  253. To have my soul happy in the Lord.

  254. That's Mary.

  255. She is thrilled with Jesus.

  256. She is delighted with her master.

  257. There she is sitting at his feet,

  258. desperate for more of his words.

  259. You know,

  260. are we making room in our busy lives

  261. for the things which matter most?

  262. Are our lives as disciples,

  263. are they first they are,

  264. are they characterized by devotion?

  265. And secondly,

  266. as we move into chapter 11 this morning

  267. and this wonderful passage about prayer,

  268. we get the second mark of the true disciple.

  269. Are our lives marked by dependence?

  270. Now look how we get into chapter 11 here.

  271. What does Luke tell us?

  272. He tells us that Jesus was praying.

  273. He was praying,

  274. which I don't know about you,

  275. but that always encourages me.

  276. That Jesus,

  277. in amongst the busyness of his life and ministry,

  278. in amongst all the people,

  279. all the urgent situations that surrounded him,

  280. all the needy people that came to him,

  281. he made time

  282. and he made prayer,

  283. that is communion with his heavenly father.

  284. He made it an absolute priority in his life.

  285. And by including this here,

  286. I think Luke's lesson for us as we look on

  287. is that if dependent prayer was appropriate

  288. for the creator of the universe,

  289. then it's certainly appropriate for you

  290. who would try and follow him.

  291. It encourages me.

  292. It challenges me.

  293. And his disciples,

  294. what do we get there?

  295. They look at him praying

  296. and they ask him,

  297. will you teach us to pray?

  298. Which is a wonderful question.

  299. Teach us how to pray.

  300. Jesus gives them three big lessons

  301. in the school of prayer.

  302. Three big lessons

  303. that I found to be so practical this week,

  304. so helpful this week,

  305. so challenging this week,

  306. so transforming this week.

  307. Three big lessons

  308. that I've got so much to teach us this morning

  309. as we follow after this king.

  310. You ready for them?

  311. First,

  312. big lesson,

  313. verses one to four.

  314. Jesus lays out for his disciples

  315. what they should pray.

  316. Verse two,

  317. when you pray,

  318. say.

  319. Do you see this?

  320. He gives them the very words to say.

  321. And there's two axes,

  322. I think,

  323. to this prayer.

  324. There's the kind of God word axis

  325. and there's the you word axis.

  326. It starts

  327. with God and his glory

  328. before it moves to

  329. you and your needs.

  330. Wonderful lesson for us there

  331. that we'll come on to see

  332. in just a moment.

  333. Firstly,

  334. let's consider the God word axis.

  335. Who is this God

  336. that they pray to?

  337. He's the all-powerful one.

  338. He's the all-knowing

  339. and all-present one.

  340. He is the creator

  341. and sustainer

  342. of absolutely everything

  343. and he is a blind

  344. and he is a blindingly

  345. holy God.

  346. And what is his relationship

  347. to them

  348. and to us

  349. this morning?

  350. Distant spectator?

  351. No.

  352. Ruthless dictator?

  353. No.

  354. Father.

  355. Jesus invites,

  356. and get your heads around this,

  357. his disciples

  358. to call this God

  359. Father.

  360. It's the Greek word

  361. pater there.

  362. Now whatever the precise usage

  363. of that word was

  364. in this culture,

  365. surely the main point

  366. that Jesus is making

  367. is that the relationship

  368. between this God

  369. and his people

  370. is one of intimacy

  371. and access.

  372. That he is no cold

  373. and distant God.

  374. He is a gracious

  375. and a near Father.

  376. Now what an amazing mystery

  377. that is.

  378. That the almighty God

  379. would look on us

  380. and because of his son

  381. Jesus Christ

  382. and his shed blood

  383. on the cross

  384. that makes us right

  385. with our heavenly father,

  386. our God,

  387. that he adopts us

  388. and he calls us

  389. his sons

  390. and daughters.

  391. Is it not a mind-boggling joy

  392. that the one we address

  393. in prayer

  394. and we get these two truths,

  395. firstly,

  396. that we come before him

  397. reverently

  398. because he is holy,

  399. that he is so far above us?

  400. As I heard one person

  401. say it this week

  402. how we must be careful

  403. not to just simply

  404. address God

  405. as the God almighty.

  406. He is the God almighty.

  407. We must never lose

  408. that sense of reverence

  409. as to who he is

  410. and who we are.

  411. He is a holy God.

  412. But secondly,

  413. the second truth to grasp

  414. is that we come before him

  415. because of Jesus.

  416. We come before him confidently

  417. and we can call him

  418. our father.

  419. Two wonderful truths

  420. that we must never let go of.

  421. Oh, in our Christian lives

  422. may we never get past

  423. the jaw-dropping effect

  424. of that one word.

  425. He is our father.

  426. And so the only response to us

  427. as we get that right

  428. is hallowed be your name.

  429. hallowed.

  430. It's the cry of a transformed heart

  431. that beats for God's glory

  432. and says,

  433. God, because you are so great

  434. I want to see your name

  435. in lights.

  436. I want to see your name

  437. made great in my life,

  438. in our lives,

  439. and in our lands.

  440. I want people up and down

  441. our nation,

  442. in our city

  443. to see your greatness, God.

  444. Would they see it?

  445. And would your kingdom come?

  446. Would your rule

  447. and your reign,

  448. would it come here?

  449. Would you save people

  450. in our city

  451. to yourself

  452. as they hear

  453. and respond

  454. to the message

  455. of Jesus Christ?

  456. And not just in our city

  457. and in our land,

  458. but in the world.

  459. Do you see the truth

  460. for us there?

  461. that knowing God rightly,

  462. it feels worship,

  463. it feels mission,

  464. and it feels prayer.

  465. This is our God.

  466. So Jesus rightly,

  467. as he gives them

  468. this pattern of prayer,

  469. he begins by drawing

  470. their gaze to God.

  471. As if to say,

  472. it starts with him,

  473. it doesn't start with you.

  474. He is the orbit

  475. in which you are operating,

  476. not the other way around.

  477. Once they have

  478. their vision

  479. of who God is,

  480. God their Father,

  481. once they have

  482. that vision refined

  483. and clarified,

  484. then they can

  485. begin to see

  486. themselves rightly.

  487. And we get

  488. the other axis

  489. to this prayer.

  490. Firstly,

  491. the God word axis.

  492. Secondly,

  493. the you word axis.

  494. What does Jesus

  495. teach us

  496. teach his disciples

  497. about themselves?

  498. Well,

  499. as we've already

  500. sang earlier,

  501. and this is the reason

  502. we sang it,

  503. he teaches them

  504. this profoundly

  505. simple yet

  506. wondrously

  507. profound

  508. lesson about

  509. the Christian life,

  510. and it's that

  511. we need

  512. God.

  513. We

  514. need

  515. God.

  516. They need

  517. God.

  518. There's three

  519. aspects of their

  520. need that Jesus

  521. outlines here in this

  522. prayer.

  523. firstly,

  524. they need a bread.

  525. Do you see it there?

  526. The daily things

  527. that they need for life.

  528. Jesus is teaching

  529. them to stop

  530. and reflect

  531. that,

  532. God,

  533. you are the one

  534. who makes the sun

  535. rise every morning.

  536. God,

  537. you are

  538. the one

  539. who sustains me

  540. and provides for me.

  541. You see,

  542. Jesus is teaching

  543. them here to have

  544. a heart stance

  545. of dependence

  546. and thankfulness.

  547. Lord,

  548. that Sunday

  549. happened today,

  550. not just because

  551. it rolled around

  552. from Saturday,

  553. but Sunday

  554. happened today

  555. because you

  556. decided it should

  557. happen today.

  558. And you have

  559. got your purposes

  560. to fulfill today

  561. for your glory.

  562. That's why it

  563. happened today.

  564. I wonder if you

  565. find yourselves

  566. thankful this

  567. morning.

  568. Do we find

  569. ourselves

  570. aware of God's

  571. goodness to us

  572. every day,

  573. every moment of

  574. every day,

  575. or have we

  576. grown accustomed

  577. to his

  578. mercies?

  579. As the late

  580. John Stott

  581. once said,

  582. thankfulness

  583. is a soil

  584. in which

  585. pride

  586. does not

  587. easily grow.

  588. Father,

  589. thank you.

  590. They need bread.

  591. Secondly,

  592. they need forgiveness.

  593. They need to be

  594. examining their

  595. own hearts,

  596. confessing their

  597. failures and

  598. sin and

  599. shortcomings

  600. against their

  601. holy father,

  602. and recognizing

  603. that he is

  604. gracious,

  605. and he is

  606. merciful,

  607. and knowing

  608. that because of

  609. Jesus and his

  610. shed blood that

  611. speaks a better

  612. word for us,

  613. that he is

  614. faithful and

  615. just to forgive

  616. their sin.

  617. And you see

  618. how Jesus so

  619. tightly knits

  620. here the

  621. relationship with

  622. God to the

  623. relationships with

  624. others.

  625. Because knowing

  626. that they have

  627. been forgiven

  628. much by God,

  629. it should affect

  630. how they

  631. relate to

  632. others,

  633. that they

  634. seek to

  635. forgive

  636. others,

  637. that they

  638. seek to

  639. be right

  640. with others,

  641. that they

  642. seek to

  643. deal with

  644. issues that

  645. arise with

  646. others.

  647. You know,

  648. let me ask

  649. you this

  650. morning,

  651. is there

  652. anyone that

  653. you need to

  654. get right

  655. with?

  656. Is there

  657. bitterness

  658. brewing in

  659. your own

  660. heart against

  661. another brother

  662. or sister?

  663. Is there

  664. unconfessed

  665. sin in the

  666. chambers of

  667. your heart

  668. that is

  669. holding your

  670. back in

  671. your walk

  672. with the

  673. Lord?

  674. We need

  675. forgiveness.

  676. And thirdly,

  677. they need

  678. protection.

  679. It's a

  680. confession that

  681. Lord, I know

  682. my own sinful

  683. heart, I know

  684. as the old hymn

  685. says, I know

  686. that I am

  687. prone to

  688. wander, Lord,

  689. I feel it.

  690. I know my

  691. weaknesses, and

  692. so Lord, I

  693. need you by

  694. your spirit

  695. living in me

  696. to direct and

  697. to guide my

  698. every step and

  699. my every

  700. thoughts and

  701. my every

  702. action today.

  703. Would you

  704. deliver me from

  705. evil?

  706. I need you,

  707. Heavenly Father,

  708. I need you.

  709. Before we

  710. came to

  711. Brunsfield five

  712. odd years ago,

  713. Alex and I,

  714. we spent a bit

  715. of time working

  716. in a Christian

  717. hospital,

  718. Malawi, and

  719. every morning

  720. we used to

  721. have these

  722. team meetings

  723. at a

  724. ridiculous

  725. o'clock in

  726. the morning.

  727. We used to

  728. start by

  729. reading a

  730. portion of

  731. God's word

  732. together, and

  733. we would sing

  734. together.

  735. Now, you

  736. can imagine

  737. coming from a

  738. British background

  739. into that.

  740. It was a bit

  741. weird singing

  742. together.

  743. But we sung

  744. together, and I

  745. used to think I

  746. could hit a

  747. note, but I

  748. heard these

  749. guys sing, and

  750. I thought,

  751. oof, right, I

  752. can't hit a

  753. note.

  754. But every

  755. morning we

  756. used to sing

  757. the same

  758. song.

  759. We used to

  760. sing, give

  761. me,

  762. power, Lord

  763. Jesus, give

  764. me power, Lord

  765. Jesus, give me

  766. power, every

  767. hour to be

  768. strong.

  769. O, give me

  770. power, and I

  771. used to repeat

  772. about six

  773. times.

  774. Now, I'm

  775. all up for

  776. repeating

  777. choruses, but

  778. that one got a

  779. bit repetitive.

  780. But I sat

  781. there, convicted,

  782. because I

  783. looked into my

  784. own heart, and

  785. I thought,

  786. Graham, have

  787. you ever sung

  788. that song,

  789. really?

  790. Have you

  791. ever

  792. acknowledged

  793. that you

  794. need God?

  795. Have you

  796. ever acknowledged

  797. that you do

  798. not have the

  799. ability to

  800. guide your

  801. way through

  802. life?

  803. You do

  804. not have

  805. all the

  806. answers.

  807. And in

  808. fact, the

  809. cry, if I'm

  810. honest, the

  811. song of my

  812. own heart

  813. was, I'm

  814. okay, Lord

  815. Jesus.

  816. I've got the

  817. power.

  818. I've got the

  819. power for

  820. every hour to

  821. keep me

  822. strong.

  823. And I

  824. wonder if

  825. that is

  826. true for us

  827. this morning

  828. that we

  829. rate our

  830. ability to

  831. navigate our

  832. ways through

  833. the ups and

  834. downs of

  835. life.

  836. I've been

  837. praying this

  838. week for

  839. us that we

  840. would see that

  841. we do not

  842. have the

  843. power.

  844. Individually, in

  845. our own

  846. lives, we

  847. would see our

  848. need of God,

  849. we would see

  850. that we need

  851. him, and

  852. corporately as

  853. a church, that

  854. we would see

  855. that we need

  856. God.

  857. how often

  858. do we think

  859. we're okay

  860. because we

  861. can put on

  862. nice events, and

  863. we can make

  864. nice coffee, and

  865. we can do nice

  866. Bible studies, we

  867. can function as

  868. a church, we

  869. can get by.

  870. But my prayer

  871. this week has

  872. been, oh Lord,

  873. would you rid

  874. us of our

  875. complacency?

  876. As a church

  877. community here,

  878. would you forgive

  879. us for the times

  880. that we think in

  881. our busy lives, that

  882. we can run from

  883. thing to thing, and

  884. task to task, and

  885. think that they

  886. are excuses for

  887. not stopping to

  888. acknowledge that we

  889. need Jesus.

  890. you.

  891. Do you feel that

  892. in your own

  893. heart?

  894. Lord, I need

  895. you.

  896. Wednesday the

  897. 10th of May, prayer

  898. meeting in the

  899. upstairs hall.

  900. We're going to

  901. pray for our

  902. nation, the UK.

  903. We put that

  904. together about six

  905. months ago, not

  906. really knowing what

  907. would happen, but

  908. what a time to

  909. pray for our

  910. country.

  911. Brexit, snap

  912. election, we

  913. need to pray.

  914. We need to pray

  915. to our great

  916. gods.

  917. Come, Wednesday

  918. the 10th of

  919. May, let's pray

  920. together as a

  921. community, and

  922. acknowledge that

  923. we need him.

  924. Martin Luther,

  925. famously wrote,

  926. I have so much

  927. to do today that

  928. it leaves me with

  929. little option but

  930. to spend the first

  931. three hours of this

  932. day in prayer.

  933. You know, one

  934. thing I've tried to

  935. do this week, and

  936. I'll invite you to

  937. do it, is I've just

  938. printed, well, just

  939. try and make the

  940. Lord's Prayer the

  941. focus of my prayer

  942. times this week.

  943. and I've just printed

  944. it on the back of

  945. the sheet.

  946. Maybe you want to

  947. just, this week, make

  948. that the focus of

  949. your prayer, just slip

  950. it inside your Bible,

  951. come to it every

  952. morning, and I

  953. found it such a

  954. realigning experience

  955. to pray this prayer

  956. and to stop after

  957. every line.

  958. That these are the

  959. words my Lord gave

  960. us, his followers,

  961. to pray.

  962. These are his

  963. words.

  964. And this is how I

  965. should be praying.

  966. Heavenly Father, I

  967. need you.

  968. That is what they

  969. should pray, and

  970. we'll rattle through

  971. these last two.

  972. I'm aware of time.

  973. Secondly, verses 1

  974. to 10, Jesus lays

  975. out to his disciples

  976. how they should

  977. pray.

  978. And he tells them

  979. this parable, and

  980. it's about a host who

  981. receives an unexpected

  982. guest at what you

  983. must be able to say

  984. is an ungodly hour.

  985. And he's unprepared

  986. for this guest.

  987. Now, in this

  988. culture, hospitality

  989. is a big deal.

  990. And so a first

  991. century host would

  992. do absolutely

  993. everything in

  994. their power to

  995. offer their

  996. guest the very

  997. best that they

  998. could give them.

  999. In a village,

  1000. hospitality is not

  1001. just an individual

  1002. thing, it's a

  1003. corporate thing.

  1004. Everybody in the

  1005. community was

  1006. obliged to help

  1007. each other be a

  1008. good host.

  1009. And so it was

  1010. the duty of this

  1011. neighbor, no

  1012. matter how

  1013. inconvenient, no

  1014. matter what the

  1015. hour, his duty

1016. to get out of bed

  1017. in order to help

  1018. his neighbor.

  1019. None of Jesus'

  1020. listeners would

  1021. refuse to get out

  1022. of bed.

  1023. That is the

  1024. point.

  1025. No matter what

  1026. time it was,

  1027. no matter what

  1028. the cry was,

  1029. to help a

  1030. neighbor in need.

  1031. So when Jesus

  1032. asks this question,

  1033. which of you has

  1034. a friend who

  1035. wouldn't act like

  1036. this in a situation

  1037. like that?

  1038. The disciples are

  1039. thinking to themselves,

  1040. well, none of us

  1041. have a friend like

  1042. that.

  1043. All of our

  1044. friends would

  1045. help.

  1046. Well, says Jesus,

  1047. if that neighbor

  1048. disturbed and

1049. hassled as he may be,

1050. if he will rise and

  1051. respond to the request

  1052. from his neighbor

  1053. and needs,

  1054. then how much

  1055. more will God

  1056. rise to answer

  1057. your prayers when

  1058. you knock at his

  1059. door and ask?

  1060. Big point from the

  1061. parable, that God

  1062. is not a begrudging

  1063. and inconvenience

  1064. grantor.

  1065. God is a willing

  1066. and ready giver.

  1067. If your friend will

  1068. answer your cry for

  1069. help because you

  1070. were bold in asking,

  1071. how much more will

  1072. God answer your

  1073. cry for help because

  1074. you are his child?

  1075. So what does Jesus

  1076. invite his disciples

  1077. to do here?

  1078. Ask.

  1079. Ask.

  1080. In line of what

  1081. he's outlined to

  1082. them to pray, ask

  1083. and do it boldly.

  1084. Your friends may

  1085. reluctantly give you

  1086. what you need.

  1087. But how much more

  1088. as God's child will

  1089. he gladly give you

  1090. everything that you

  1091. need?

1092. You may well be an

  1093. inconvenience to your

  1094. neighbor.

  1095. And if he answers,

  1096. how much more will

  1097. God your good

  1098. father be willing to

1099. open up the door to

  1100. you?

1101. This is how you're to

  1102. ask, says Jesus.

  1103. You're to ask boldly

  1104. and you're to ask

  1105. confidently.

  1106. And thirdly,

  1107. verses 11 to 13,

  1108. Jesus lays out for

  1109. them why they should

  1110. pray.

  1111. And again, it's

  1112. this how much more

  1113. logic.

  1114. There's a bit of

  1115. humor in there as

  1116. well, isn't it?

  1117. If you earthly

  1118. fathers, if you know

  1119. how to give good

  1120. gifts to your

  1121. children, how much

  1122. more will your good

  1123. and perfect father

  1124. not give his

  1125. children things that

  1126. will be bad or

  1127. dangerous for them,

  1128. but give them the

  1129. things that are good

  1130. for them?

  1131. And to see it

  1132. outlined there,

  1133. most notably, his

  1134. very presence with

  1135. us through the

  1136. Holy Spirit.

  1137. And as we close

  1138. this morning, let's

  1139. maybe bring a few

  1140. of those strands

  1141. together and bring

  1142. ourselves back to

  1143. that question that we

  1144. asked at the outset.

  1145. In our always-on

  1146. culture, are we

  1147. making room in our

  1148. busy lives for the

  1149. things which matter

  1150. most?

  1151. As disciples of

  1152. Jesus Christ, are we

  1153. making time in our

  1154. busy lives every day

  1155. to sit and listen

  1156. and to stop and

  1157. pray?

  1158. Are our lives, are

  1159. they marked by

  1160. undistracted devotion

  1161. and by unashamed

  1162. dependence?

  1163. And I thought it'd

1164. be great for us this

  1165. morning, just as we

  1166. close, to close by

  1167. saying the Lord's

  1168. Prayer together as we

  1169. read it here.

  1170. But before we do

  1171. that, why don't we

  1172. just take a moment

  1173. before we rush into

  1174. our Martha world,

  1175. just to still our

  1176. hearts before the

  1177. Lord and let's

  1178. respond to his

  1179. words as we've

  1180. heard it this

  1181. morning.

  1182. Let's pray together.

  1183. Father, hallowed be

  1184. your name, your

  1185. kingdom come.

1186. Give us each day our

  1187. daily bread.

  1188. Forgive us our sins

  1189. as we also forgive

  1190. everyone who sins

  1191. against us.

1192. And lead us not into

  1193. temptation.

  1194. Amen.
