  1. Let's pray together.

  2. Father, we thank you that as we come here to look at your words,

  3. that we can sing that you are the God who goes before us,

  4. the one who stands behind, the one that is by our side.

  5. And so, Father, we pray that you will open your words to us,

  6. that we might hear what you would have us hear from it.

  7. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  8. In our office, we have a tradition, which I think is really very good,

  9. of us all going out on the last Friday of the month for lunch together.

  10. I think it's really good and healthy for the team,

  11. particularly for the directors socialising with us mere mortals.

  12. There is, however, one thing that makes it difficult.

  13. In a relatively small company, we have two vegans.

  14. Now, one of them is quite pragmatic,

  15. and will quietly find something suitable to eat without making a fuss.

  16. The other one, however, you can guarantee,

  17. if you're sitting near to him,

  18. he will take it as an opportunity to try and persuade you

  19. that he's right,

  20. that you're wrong,

  21. and that ultimately,

  22. everyone will be vegan in the future,

  23. and why are we not just getting on with the agenda?

  24. But that's the same with all of us.

  25. People go on and on about the things they care about.

  26. Whether it's Nicola Sturgeon,

  27. who can't help turning every subject

  28. into an excuse

  29. to promote Scottish independence,

  30. or whether it's the guy at work

  31. who's always going on about the quality of the ingredients

  32. he uses in his pop-up pizza business,

  33. or John Piper,

  34. always returning to his catchphrase of

  35. God is most glorified in us

  36. when we are most satisfied in him,

  37. or Tom Wright talking about life after life after death,

  38. or our own Ali Jay,

  39. who unfortunately isn't here tonight,

  40. talking about the persecuted church in China,

  41. or Michael Ponton

  42. on our complete inability

  43. to comprehend the wonder of our salvation.

  44. The things we care about

  45. are the things that we keep coming back to

  46. again and again.

  47. And so it is with the Psalms.

  48. Many of the Psalms begin with a call to worship.

  49. On a quick scan through,

  50. I found 24 of them

  51. starting with an explicit command

  52. to praise God

  53. in the first verse.

  54. That's ignoring any others

  55. that get to it later on

  56. or are not quite so explicit.

  57. Among all the wide-ranging subjects

  58. and emotions

  59. the Psalms cover,

  60. almost one in six of them

  61. begin in this way.

  62. Psalm 66,

  63. shout for joy to God,

  64. all the earth.

  65. Psalm 95,

  66. come,

  67. let us sing for joy to the Lord,

  68. let us shout aloud

  69. to the rock of our salvation.

  70. Psalm 103,

  71. praise the Lord,

  72. O my soul,

  73. all my inmost being,

  74. praise his holy name.

  75. Psalm 136,

  76. give thanks to the Lord,

  77. for he is good,

  78. his love endures forever.

  79. Psalm 149,

  80. sing to the Lord a new song,

  81. and so on,

  82. on and on.

  83. And so obviously,

  84. to the Psalmists,

  85. this was an important subject,

  86. such an important subject

  87. that they didn't think,

  88. yeah,

  89. I've written a song about that,

  90. I can move on to something else now.

  91. They keep coming back to it

  92. again and again.

  93. Why?

  94. I think the answer,

  95. shocking as it may sound,

  96. is this,

  97. praise doesn't come naturally.

  98. Praise is something

  99. that we find

  100. really difficult.

  101. Although,

  102. it's the primary thing

  103. that we were made for.

  104. As the Catechism says,

  105. man's chief end

  106. is to glorify God,

  107. yet,

  108. in our fallen state,

  109. this side of eternity,

  110. praise is something

  111. we struggle with.

  112. Sometimes,

  113. yes,

  114. it naturally,

  115. spontaneously pours out.

  116. Sometimes,

  117. a glimpse of God's goodness,

  118. his glory,

  119. his majesty,

  120. is seen,

  121. and we respond spontaneously.

  122. It may be in nature,

  123. as we've sung about,

  124. whether something spectacular,

  125. or just a sunny day,

  126. rare as those are.

  127. It may be the actions

  128. of a fellow human,

  129. of another bearer

  130. of God's image.

  131. It may be something

  132. in our circumstances,

  133. a new job,

  134. the birth of a child,

  135. or something trivial,

  136. like a lovely meal.

  137. It may be some piece

  138. of art,

  139. music,

  140. literature,

  141. or in my case,

  142. architecture.

  143. Something that just,

  144. our heart catches on

  145. to a glimpse

  146. of God's glory.

  147. And then,

  148. sings my soul,

  149. my saviour,

  150. God,

  151. to thee.

  152. And those times

  153. are wonderful,

  154. whether they're days,

  155. months,

  156. or just minutes.

  157. But often,

  158. it's hard.

  159. We forget

  160. how good God is.

  161. We forget

  162. all we know

  163. about him.

  164. We forget

  165. all he has done

  166. for us.

  167. And we have

  168. difficulty seeing him.

  169. For now,

  170. we see only

  171. a reflection

  172. as in a mirror.

  173. the transient,

  174. superficial things

  175. of this world

  176. seem to have

  177. so much more substance.

  178. They cloud our eyes.

  179. They distract

  180. our attention.

  181. They capture

  182. our affections.

  183. And also,

  184. worse than that,

  185. there is still

  186. that rebellious element

  187. in our hearts

  188. that doesn't want

  189. to acknowledge

  190. that we are not

  191. the greatest.

  192. That he

  193. is worthy

  194. of all praise

  195. and not us.

  196. And so,

  197. the psalmist,

  198. knowing both

  199. how important it is

  200. and how difficult

  201. we find it,

  202. repeatedly

  203. return to the subject,

  204. writing psalm

  205. after psalm,

  206. reminding us

  207. to praise.

  208. In fact,

  209. they know

  210. the struggle

  211. themselves.

  212. And so,

  213. for instance,

  214. David in Psalm 103

  215. addresses the psalm

  216. to his own soul.

  217. He's talking

  218. to himself.

  219. And he's exhorting

  220. himself to praise

  221. because he knows

  222. exactly

  223. how easily

  224. he forgets.

  225. Praise the Lord,

  226. O my soul,

  227. all my inmost being,

  228. praise his holy name,

  229. praise the Lord,

  230. O my soul,

  231. and forget not

  232. all his benefits.

  233. I know,

  234. even as I was

  235. writing this,

  236. how much

  237. I was struggling

  238. to focus,

  239. to concentrate,

  240. to be excited

  241. by something

  242. as important

  243. as this.

  244. To be honest,

  245. I feel a bit

  246. of an imposter

  247. standing up here

  248. telling you

  249. to praise God

  250. when,

  251. really,

  252. I'm not feeling it.

  253. Not for any

  254. particular reason,

  255. just,

  256. I'm not.

  257. But that's

  258. exactly

  259. the point

  260. of these psalms.

  261. That's exactly

  262. who they're

  263. written to.

  264. We don't need

  265. something telling

  266. us to praise God

  267. when we feel

  268. like it.

  269. We do it,

  270. naturally.

  271. We need something

  272. to tell us to praise

  273. God when we don't.

  274. As one song

  275. says,

  276. it doesn't depend

  277. on the circumstance,

  278. the strength

  279. of my arm

  280. or my voice.

  281. It doesn't depend

  282. on the way

  283. I feel

  284. for I've

  285. made up my mind

  286. and I'm going

  287. to rejoice.

  288. And so,

  289. in general,

  290. we see all

  291. these psalms

  292. follow a similar

  293. structure.

  294. They start

  295. with an exhortation

  296. to praise

  297. and then they

  298. continue

  299. by telling us

  300. why.

  301. By setting out

  302. some of the

  303. things that we

  304. should praise

  305. God for.

  306. For his character,

  307. for his deeds.

  308. And this psalm

  309. is exactly

  310. the same.

  311. We see the

  312. first three

  313. verses

  314. exhort us

  315. to praise

  316. God.

  317. The next

  318. 16,

  319. 4 to

  320. 19

  321. tell us

  322. why.

  323. And then

  324. the final

  325. three tell us

  326. how we should

  327. respond to

  328. this.

  329. And so,

  330. our psalm

  331. here starts

  332. with a call

  333. to sing

  334. for joy

  335. to the

  336. Lord.

  337. Or as some

  338. other translations

  339. put it,

  340. shout,

  341. rejoice,

  342. exult.

  343. Which of

  344. those is more

  345. accurate?

  346. I don't know,

  347. but they

  348. pretty much

  349. get the same

  350. concept.

  351. That we

  352. have to bring

  353. praise

  354. joyfully

  355. to God.

  356. But we

  357. see that it's

  358. a call

  359. to you

  360. righteous,

  361. righteous,

  362. to those

  363. who seek

  364. to follow

  365. God.

  366. Not to

  367. those who

  368. are perfect,

  369. but to

  370. those who

  371. recognize

  372. their weakness

  373. and look

  374. to God

  375. for his

  376. righteousness,

  377. the righteousness

  378. that comes

  379. by faith.

  380. It's

  381. pointless

  382. as being

  383. in open

  384. rebellion

  385. against God

  386. and singing

  387. to him.

  388. As

  389. Salty,

  390. the singing

  391. song book

  392. in the

  393. Kids Praise

  394. album that

  395. some of

  396. you may

  397. remember

  398. from your

  399. childhood

  400. says,

  401. you can

  402. sing

  403. Christian

  404. songs

  405. till you're

  406. blue in

  407. the face,

  408. but if

  409. it's not

  410. from the

  411. heart,

  412. it's not

  413. praise.

  414. But we

  415. see also

  416. that for

  417. those following

  418. God,

  419. it's not

  420. just possible,

  421. but it's

  422. fitting.

  423. It's the

  424. right and

  425. proper thing

  426. for them

  427. to do.

  428. It's not

  429. just an

  430. optional extra

  431. for those

  432. who like

  433. that sort

  434. of thing.

  435. it's the

  436. proper

  437. response

  438. of those

  439. who are

  440. the

  441. righteous.

  442. I don't

  443. know if

  444. there's any

  445. particular

  446. significance

  447. in the

  448. instruments

  449. mentioned

  450. in verse

  451. two.

  452. The

  453. harp

  454. and the

  455. ten-stringed

  456. lyre.

  457. Maybe

  458. one's a

  459. simple folk

  460. instrument

  461. and one's

  462. a more

  463. complex

  464. professional

  465. instrument.

  466. Maybe

  467. one's a

  468. strummed

  469. rhythm

  470. instrument

  471. one's

  472. more of

  473. the

  474. melodic

  475. lead.

  476. I don't

  477. know,

  478. but whatever

  479. they are,

  480. we're called

  481. to use

  482. everything we

  483. have at

  484. our disposal

  485. to praise

  486. God.

  487. But then

  488. verse three

  489. tells us

  490. three important

  491. things about

  492. our praise.

  493. It should

  494. be new,

  495. it should

  496. be skilful,

  497. and it

  498. should be

  499. loud.

  500. We are to

  501. sing a new

  502. song.

  503. I did

  504. wonder about

  505. just telling

  506. the band

  507. that tonight

  508. we were

  509. singing songs

  510. that to be

  511. written for

  512. tonight we

  513. would sing

  514. them once

  515. and never

  516. sing them

  517. again,

  518. but maybe

  519. not.

  520. But the

  521. important thing

  522. here is we're

  523. not to be just

  524. going through

  525. the motions,

  526. but we're to

  527. have something

  528. fresh to sing

  529. about,

  530. something about

  531. what we have

  532. learnt from

  533. God, what we

  534. have learnt

  535. about God.

  536. We should

  537. not be just

  538. repeating what

  539. was once

  540. meaningful to

  541. us, but is

  542. now routine.

  543. There is

  544. nothing wrong

  545. with old

  546. songs.

  547. Many of them

  548. are wonderful.

  549. I love them.

  550. I love the

  551. deep poetry

  552. of the words,

  553. the anthemic

  554. tunes, how

  555. they speak of

  556. great truths,

  557. songs, but

  558. why are we

  559. singing them?

  560. Are we

  561. singing them

  562. for yesterday's

  563. reasons or

  564. for today's?

  565. Are we

  566. singing them

  567. to recapture

  568. what we

  569. felt sometime

  570. in the past

  571. or are we

  572. using them

  573. to express

  574. the reality

  575. of today?

  576. But then

  577. we're to

  578. play skillfully.

  579. Praising

  580. God is

  581. something that

  582. we have to

  583. do to the

  584. best of our

  585. ability,

  586. however much

  587. or little

  588. that is.

  589. We

  590. shouldn't be

  591. half-heartedly

  592. just trying to

  593. get away with

  594. the bare

  595. minimum.

  596. Yeah, that

  597. will do for

  598. God.

  599. We should be

  600. bringing God

  601. the first

  602. fruits, the

  603. best that

  604. we have.

  605. Here we

  606. have a band

  607. of skilled

  608. musicians who

  609. put a lot

  610. of work into

  611. helping us in

  612. our worship,

  613. and we often

  614. take them for

  615. granted.

  616. We only comment

  617. when they don't

  618. do things quite

  619. the way we'd

  620. like them to

  621. do.

  622. But it's

  623. right that

  624. we should

  625. put that

  626. much focus

  627. on it,

  628. because it

  629. is important.

  630. Our worship

  631. is for God,

  632. and therefore

  633. it matters.

  634. But our

  635. worship's not

  636. just to be

  637. skillful.

  638. We're called

  639. to give

  640. loud,

  641. joyful

  642. shouts.

  643. It's to be

  644. passionate and

  645. energetic.

  646. it's all

  647. too easy

  648. to have

  649. music

  650. that's

  651. skillful.

  652. It's

  653. perfect,

  654. smooth,

  655. polished,

  656. but dead.

  657. This is

  658. something I

  659. struggle with.

  660. There is

  661. a lot of

  662. music that

  663. I love to

  664. listen to,

  665. particularly

  666. Renaissance

  667. choral music,

  668. music written

  669. for the

  670. worship of

  671. God,

  672. that's so

  673. often performed

  674. beautifully,

  675. with exquisite

  676. skill,

  677. and lacking

  678. any passion.

  679. With no

  680. sense that

  681. the people

  682. singing it

  683. have any

  684. idea what

  685. they're singing

  686. about.

  687. And then

  688. there's much

  689. of modern

  690. worship music

  691. that,

  692. quite frankly,

  693. I don't

  694. really like.

  695. Often,

  696. and I'm

  697. sure I

  698. sound like a

  699. real old

  700. fogey here,

  701. it sounds

  702. like noise.

  703. But,

  704. it's a

  705. joyful noise

  706. to the

  707. Lord.

  708. I know

  709. what I

  710. like,

  711. but I

  712. know what

  713. should

  714. better

  715. worship.

  716. And so,

  717. why does

  718. the psalmist

  719. call us to

  720. bring this

  721. new,

  722. skillful,

  723. loud,

  724. joyful song

  725. of praise?

  726. He gives

  727. us the

  728. reason in

  729. verses 4

  730. and 5.

  731. In fact,

  732. I think

  733. most of

  734. the rest

  735. of the

  736. psalm

  737. is just

  738. examples

  739. of this

  740. first reason.

  741. The reason

  742. is this.

  743. He is

  744. faithful.

  745. He is

  746. just.

  747. He is

  748. loving.

  749. He is

  750. righteous.

  751. His words

  752. are true.

  753. He is a

  754. good,

  755. good God.

  756. And

  757. everything he

  758. has made

  759. is filled

  760. with his

  761. goodness

  762. and love.

  763. This is

  764. the primary

  765. reason that

  766. God is

  767. worthy of

  768. all our

  769. praise.

  770. Not

  771. because of

  772. anything he

  773. has done,

  774. but because

  775. of who he

  776. is,

  777. because of

  778. his character.

  779. But we

  780. see that

  781. character

  782. displayed in

  783. everything that

  784. he does.

  785. We see that

  786. character displayed

  787. in our

  788. experience as

  789. we follow

  790. him.

  791. both as

  792. individuals

  793. and as

  794. a church.

  795. As a

  796. church,

  797. see,

  798. we're

  799. celebrating

  800. 50 years

  801. of God's

  802. faithfulness.

  803. As

  804. individuals,

  805. whether we've

  806. been following

  807. him for

  808. 80,

  809. 90 years

  810. or a

  811. day.

  812. As we

  813. sang this

  814. morning,

  815. through many

  816. dangers,

  817. toils and

  818. snares,

  819. I have

  820. already

  821. come.

  822. Tis grace

  823. has brought

  824. me safe,

  825. thus far,

  826. and grace

  827. will lead

  828. me home.

  829. And so

  830. we can see

  831. his faithfulness,

  832. love,

  833. beauty,

  834. in so many

  835. things.

  836. But the

  837. psalmist wants

  838. us to think

  839. of two

  840. particular

  841. examples.

  842. disciples.

  843. The first

  844. of these

  845. is given

  846. in verses

  847. 6 to

  848. 9.

  849. And it's

  850. the same

  851. reason that

  852. Peter brought

  853. to us

  854. from Psalm

  855. 19 a

  856. couple of

  857. weeks ago.

  858. we see

  859. here that

  860. we should

  861. praise God

  862. because he

  863. is the

  864. creator.

  865. And

  866. emphasis

  867. here is

  868. that he

  869. created

  870. by his

  871. word.

  872. He has

  873. the power

  874. and authority

  875. to speak

  876. a universe

  877. into existence.

  878. How crazy

  879. is that?

  880. And it's

  881. repeated four

  882. times.

  883. By the

  884. word of

  885. the Lord

  886. were the

  887. heavens made.

  888. A starry

  889. host by

  890. the breath

  891. of his

  892. mouth.

  893. Verse

  894. 9.

  895. For he

  896. spoke and

  897. it came

  898. to be.

  899. He

  900. commanded

  901. and it

  902. stood

  903. firm.

  904. We see

  905. here an

  906. amazing,

  907. awesome,

  908. powerful God

  909. that can

  910. just speak

  911. and

  912. the

  913. universe

  914. becomes.

  915. Now,

  916. I know

  917. in a

  918. church like

  919. this there

  920. will be

  921. many

  922. different

  923. and

  924. probably

  925. strongly

  926. held

  927. opinions

  928. on

  929. the

  930. details

  931. of

  932. when

  933. and

  934. how,

  935. of

  936. how

  937. literally,

  938. how

  939. poetically

  940. we should

  941. take the

  942. first

  943. chapters

  944. of

  945. Genesis.

  946. And I

  947. think these

  948. are

  949. very

  950. important

  951. questions

  952. that

  953. actually

  954. display

  955. quite a

  956. lot of

  957. things of

  958. what we

  959. think about

  960. God.

  961. But the

  962. main focus

  963. here is

  964. that it

  965. did not

  966. happen as

  967. a result

  968. of some

  969. impersonal

  970. force or

  971. some random

  972. chance,

  973. but at the

  974. divine command

  975. of God

  976. and that

  977. it displays

  978. the character

  979. and nature

  980. of God.

  981. When we're

  982. interacting with

  983. non-Christians

  984. around us,

  985. sometimes,

  986. sometimes,

  987. it may be

  988. appropriate

  989. to get

  990. into some

  991. of these

  992. details,

  993. as long

  994. as we

  995. keep the

  996. emphasis

  997. not on

  998. the when

  999. or how

  1000. question,

  1001. but on

  1002. the who

  1003. question.

  1004. What matters

  1005. is not

  1006. that they

  1007. agree with

  1008. us

  1009. about the

  1010. details,

  1011. but that they

  1012. come to

  1013. acknowledge the

  1014. one who

  1015. called the

  1016. whole universe

  1017. into being.

  1018. I know I

  1019. have been

  1020. involved in

  1021. plenty

  1022. pointless

  1023. discussions

  1024. that got

  1025. caught up

  1026. in scientific

  1027. details,

  1028. that probably

  1029. both sides of

  1030. the conversation

  1031. really were out

  1032. of our depths

  1033. and didn't

  1034. know what

  1035. we were

  1036. talking about,

  1037. and yet,

  1038. they completely

  1039. missed the

  1040. point.

  1041. They got

  1042. caught up in

  1043. the details

  1044. of creation

  1045. and missed

  1046. the creator.

  1047. And, but

  1048. then verse

  1049. eight tells

  1050. us that

  1051. when we

  1052. recognize him,

  1053. there is

  1054. only one

  1055. appropriate

  1056. response.

  1057. Let all

  1058. the earth

  1059. fear the

  1060. Lord.

  1061. Let all

  1062. the people

  1063. of the

  1064. world

  1065. revere

  1066. him.

  1067. The only

  1068. suitable

  1069. response

  1070. is reverent

  1071. fear and

  1072. worship of

  1073. our awesome

  1074. creator.

  1075. when we

  1076. recognize

  1077. that all

  1078. the glories

  1079. of the

  1080. world

  1081. around us,

  1082. not just

  1083. the nice,

  1084. romantic,

  1085. picturesque

  1086. parts of

  1087. creation,

  1088. but every

  1089. part of

  1090. it,

  1091. the air

  1092. we breathe,

  1093. our bodies,

  1094. the very

  1095. solidity of

  1096. objects,

  1097. the fact

  1098. that there

  1099. is a

  1100. sheer

  1101. existence

  1102. of anything,

  1103. that all

  1104. of that

  1105. comes from

  1106. him,

  1107. then we

  1108. must worship

  1109. him.

  1110. And so

  1111. then the

  1112. psalmist

  1113. continues

  1114. on to

  1115. the second

  1116. example of

  1117. how God's

  1118. character is

  1119. displayed,

  1120. when we

  1121. see that

  1122. God is

  1123. not just

  1124. creator,

  1125. but he

  1126. is in

  1127. control.

  1128. See this

  1129. in verses,

  1130. where are we,

  1131. verses 10

  1132. 10 to

  1133. 19,

  1134. basically,

  1135. it's all

  1136. on this

  1137. subject,

  1138. because God

  1139. is not an

  1140. absentee

  1141. landlord.

  1142. God is

  1143. not the

  1144. watchmaker

  1145. who created

  1146. a wonderful

  1147. watch,

  1148. wound it

  1149. up,

  1150. and left

  1151. it to run

  1152. on its

  1153. own.

  1154. God is

  1155. involved

  1156. with his

  1157. creation.

  1158. He's not

  1159. just standing

  1160. back and

  1161. looking on

  1162. disinterestedly.

  1163. And so

  1164. in verses

  1165. 10 to

  1166. 12,

  1167. we're told

  1168. that his

  1169. plans will

  1170. be fulfilled.

  1171. It's sheer

  1172. arrogance to

  1173. accept that

  1174. God is the

  1175. almighty

  1176. creator,

  1177. and then

  1178. think that we

  1179. can just go

  1180. ahead and make

  1181. our own

  1182. plans,

  1183. in spite of

  1184. him, in

  1185. spite of

  1186. what he

  1187. says.

  1188. Here

  1189. specifically

  1190. talks about

  1191. the futility

  1192. of nations

  1193. making

  1194. godless

  1195. plans.

  1196. Psalm 2

  1197. says,

  1198. why do

  1199. the nations

  1200. conspire,

  1201. and the

  1202. peoples plot

  1203. in vain?

  1204. The kings

  1205. of the earth

  1206. rise up,

  1207. the rulers

  1208. band together

  1209. against the

  1210. Lord and

  1211. against his

  1212. anointed,

  1213. saying,

  1214. let us

  1215. break their

  1216. chains and

  1217. throw off

  1218. their shackles.

  1219. The one

  1220. enthroned in

  1221. heaven

  1222. laughs.

  1223. the Lord

  1224. scoffs at

  1225. them.

  1226. God's

  1227. plans,

  1228. God's

  1229. purposes

  1230. will be

  1231. fulfilled,

  1232. and those

  1233. who try and

  1234. stand in

  1235. his way

  1236. will be

  1237. pushed

  1238. aside.

  1239. But if

  1240. there is a

  1241. warning to

  1242. those nations

  1243. who would

  1244. try and

  1245. stand against

  1246. God,

  1247. the reverse

  1248. is also

  1249. true.

  1250. in verse

  1251. 12 we

  1252. read of

  1253. the blessing

  1254. to the

  1255. nation whose

  1256. God is

  1257. the Lord,

  1258. the people

  1259. he chose

  1260. for his

  1261. inheritance.

  1262. In the

  1263. context of

  1264. the Psalms,

  1265. the nation

  1266. in question

  1267. is Israel.

  1268. But there

  1269. are many

  1270. nations since

  1271. then who

  1272. have claimed

  1273. this position

  1274. for themselves.

  1275. Britain

  1276. certainly

  1277. thought,

  1278. it had

  1279. that

  1280. position.

  1281. And many

  1282. in the

  1283. USA today

  1284. would claim

  1285. it.

  1286. If you do

  1287. an image

  1288. search for

  1289. the nation

  1290. whose God

  1291. is the

  1292. Lord,

  1293. basically

  1294. almost

  1295. everything

  1296. that's

  1297. returned

  1298. is an

  1299. American

  1300. flag

  1301. with this

  1302. verse

  1303. emblazoned

  1304. across it.

  1305. One article

  1306. I read

  1307. states,

  1308. Psalm 33

    Psalms 33:12

  1309. verse 12

  1310. may be the

  1311. most

  1312. misappropriated

  1313. verse in

  1314. the entire

  1315. Bible.

  1316. Question that

  1317. because there

  1318. are many

  1319. others that

  1320. probably could

  1321. compete for

  1322. that title,

  1323. but it

  1324. continues,

  1325. there is no

  1326. such thing

  1327. as a Christian

  1328. nation.

  1329. There is not

  1330. now,

  1331. nor has there

  1332. ever been,

  1333. a nation on

  1334. earth that

  1335. collectively

  1336. bowed its

  1337. knee to the

  1338. lordship of

  1339. Jesus Christ.

  1340. Satan,

  1341. who insisted

  1342. that Christ

  1343. might bow

  1344. the knee to

  1345. him,

  1346. is the

  1347. present ruler

  1348. of this

  1349. world.

  1350. And so,

  1351. if there is

  1352. no such

  1353. thing as a

  1354. Christian nation,

  1355. who is this

  1356. I'm talking

  1357. about?

  1358. I think 1 Peter

  1359. would bring

  1360. some light

  1361. on this,

  1362. when it

  1363. says,

  1364. you are a

  1365. chosen people,

  1366. a royal

  1367. priesthood,

  1368. a holy

  1369. nation,

  1370. God's

  1371. special

  1372. possession,

  1373. that you

  1374. may declare

  1375. the praises

  1376. of him

  1377. who called

  1378. you out of

  1379. darkness

  1380. into his

  1381. wonderful light.

  1382. Once you

  1383. were not a

  1384. people,

  1385. but now you

  1386. are the

  1387. people of

  1388. God.

  1389. Once you

  1390. had not

  1391. received

  1392. mercy,

  1393. but now

  1394. you have

  1395. received

  1396. mercy.

  1397. And further

  1398. down in

  1399. Psalm 2

  1400. that we

  1401. read earlier,

  1402. addressing

  1403. God's

  1404. chosen king,

  1405. I will

  1406. make the

  1407. nations

  1408. your

  1409. inheritance,

  1410. the ends

  1411. of the

  1412. earth your

  1413. possession.

  1414. No longer

  1415. is this

  1416. blessing,

  1417. this promise,

  1418. this inheritance

  1419. attached just

  1420. to one

  1421. earthly nation,

  1422. but to a

  1423. kingdom which

  1424. includes all

  1425. from every

  1426. language and

  1427. tribe and

  1428. people and

  1429. nation who

  1430. acknowledge that

  1431. Jesus is

  1432. Lord.

  1433. And as such,

  1434. just as the

  1435. blessing is

  1436. attached to

  1437. individuals,

  1438. so too is the

  1439. warning.

  1440. As James would

  1441. write,

  1442. now listen,

  1443. you who say

  1444. today or

  1445. tomorrow,

  1446. we'll go to

  1447. this or that

  1448. city,

  1449. spend a year

  1450. there,

  1451. carry on

  1452. business and

  1453. make money.

  1454. Why?

  1455. You do not

  1456. even know

  1457. what will

  1458. happen tomorrow.

  1459. What is

  1460. your life?

  1461. You're a

  1462. mist that

  1463. appears for

  1464. a little

  1465. while and

  1466. then vanishes.

  1467. Instead,

  1468. you ought to

  1469. say,

  1470. if it is the

  1471. Lord's will,

  1472. we will live

  1473. and do this

  1474. or that.

  1475. Just to get

  1476. this clear,

  1477. this does not

  1478. mean suffixing

  1479. our announcements

  1480. with DV or

  1481. God willing

  1482. and continuing

  1483. to make all

  1484. our plans

  1485. ignoring God.

  1486. It means

  1487. recognizing that

  1488. God's ways

  1489. are not our

  1490. ways,

  1491. that he is

  1492. the one that

  1493. is in control.

  1494. Not that we

  1495. shouldn't make

  1496. plans,

  1497. but that we

  1498. should be

  1499. seeking to

  1500. make them

  1501. according to

  1502. what we know

  1503. of God's

  1504. will,

  1505. and fully

  1506. accepting that

  1507. God may turn

  1508. around and

  1509. say,

  1510. no,

  1511. no,

  1512. that's not

  1513. what I've

  1514. planned for

  1515. you.

  1516. I've got

  1517. another plan.

  1518. You thought

  1519. this was good?

  1520. You thought

  1521. this was the

  1522. life you

  1523. wanted?

  1524. I have other

  1525. plans,

  1526. better plans.

  1527. You may not

  1528. like the sound

  1529. of them,

  1530. but trust me.

  1531. And so

  1532. carrying on

  1533. in verses

  1534. 13 to 17

  1535. and verses

  1536. 18 to 19,

  1537. we get two

  1538. contrasting

  1539. pictures.

  1540. Both of

  1541. them speak

  1542. of God

  1543. watching.

  1544. In verse

  1545. 13,

  1546. we read,

  1547. from heaven

  1548. the Lord

  1549. looks down

  1550. and sees

  1551. all mankind.

  1552. From his

  1553. dwelling place

  1554. he watches

  1555. all who

  1556. live on

  1557. earth.

  1558. But in

  1559. verse 18,

  1560. we read,

  1561. the eyes

  1562. of the

  1563. Lord are

  1564. on those

  1565. who fear

  1566. him,

  1567. on those

  1568. whose hope

  1569. is in

  1570. his unfailing

  1571. love.

  1572. In the

  1573. first passage,

  1574. God is

  1575. watching all

  1576. of mankind.

  1577. He sees,

  1578. he knows

  1579. everything that

  1580. goes on.

  1581. Nothing can

  1582. be hidden

  1583. from him.

  1584. He knows

  1585. their hearts.

  1586. He knows

  1587. the depths

  1588. of their

  1589. hearts,

  1590. because he

  1591. made them.

  1592. as Psalm

  1593. 103 says,

  1594. he knows

  1595. how we

  1596. are formed.

  1597. He remembers

  1598. we are

  1599. dust.

  1600. But in

  1601. the second

  1602. passage,

  1603. God is

  1604. watching those

  1605. who fear

  1606. him.

  1607. And we

  1608. see here

  1609. that there's

  1610. a huge

  1611. difference.

  1612. He looks

  1613. down on

  1614. mankind

  1615. and sees

  1616. the futility

  1617. of the things

  1618. they trust in

  1619. to save

  1620. them.

  1621. Verse 16,

  1622. no king

  1623. is saved

  1624. by the

  1625. size of

  1626. his army.

  1627. No warrior

  1628. escapes by

  1629. his great

  1630. strength.

  1631. A horse

  1632. is a vain

  1633. hope for

  1634. deliverance.

  1635. Despite all

  1636. its great

  1637. strength,

  1638. it cannot

  1639. save.

  1640. And

  1641. even

  1642. today,

  1643. we see

  1644. rulers

  1645. hoping to

  1646. be saved

  1647. by their

  1648. military

  1649. might.

  1650. we

  1651. recently

  1652. saw

  1653. images

  1654. of

  1655. North

  1656. Korea

  1657. parading

  1658. their

  1659. armies,

  1660. their

  1661. weapons

  1662. for all

  1663. the world

  1664. to see.

  1665. We also

  1666. saw

  1667. America

  1668. firing off

  1669. dozens of

  1670. missiles at

  1671. Syria

  1672. and dropping

  1673. the

  1674. quite arrogantly

  1675. named

  1676. mother of

  1677. all bombs

  1678. in

  1679. Afghanistan.

  1680. And while

  1681. we may

  1682. take a

  1683. certain

  1684. amount of

  1685. comfort in

  1686. our nation's

  1687. army,

  1688. I doubt

  1689. that that

  1690. really is

  1691. what most

  1692. of us are

  1693. trusting in

  1694. for our

  1695. security.

  1696. But we

  1697. may be

  1698. trusting in

  1699. equally

  1700. futile

  1701. things.

  1702. Are we

  1703. trusting in

  1704. our income,

  1705. our pension,

  1706. our family,

  1707. our friends,

  1708. our health?

  1709. are we

  1710. trusting in

  1711. our own

  1712. ability to

  1713. cope with

  1714. whatever life

  1715. throws at

  1716. us?

  1717. Are we

  1718. just gritting

  1719. our teeth

  1720. and singing

  1721. into the

  1722. storm,

  1723. I will

  1724. survive?

  1725. None of

  1726. these things

  1727. are secure.

  1728. All of

  1729. them are

  1730. good,

  1731. or maybe

  1732. good,

  1733. but none

  1734. can be

  1735. relied upon.

  1736. But for

  1737. those who

  1738. fear him,

  1739. for those

  1740. who trust

  1741. him,

  1742. for those

  1743. whose hope

  1744. is in

  1745. unfailing

  1746. love of

  1747. the Lord,

  1748. everything

  1749. is different.

  1750. Because we

  1751. read in

  1752. verse 18

  1753. and 19,

  1754. the eyes

  1755. of the

  1756. Lord are

  1757. on those

  1758. who fear

  1759. him,

  1760. on those

  1761. whose hope

  1762. is in

  1763. his unfailing

  1764. love to

  1765. deliver them

  1766. from death

  1767. and keep

  1768. them alive

  1769. in famine.

  1770. Because they

  1771. are not

  1772. trusting in

  1773. what they

  1774. have.

  1775. They are

  1776. not trusting

  1777. in their

  1778. own might.

  1779. They are

  1780. trusting in

  1781. God.

  1782. They are

  1783. trusting in

  1784. something,

  1785. in someone

  1786. that is

  1787. secure,

  1788. that can

  1789. be trusted,

  1790. that is

  1791. reliable.

  1792. One who

  1793. Psalm 62

  1794. would tell

  1795. us is

  1796. loving and

  1797. is strong.

  1798. One who

  1799. wants to

  1800. save us

  1801. from whatever

  1802. comes our

  1803. way,

  1804. but is not

  1805. just willing,

  1806. but is

  1807. able,

  1808. is powerful

  1809. to save us

  1810. completely,

  1811. is able to

  1812. take us

  1813. through the

  1814. storms of

  1815. life,

  1816. whatever they

  1817. might throw

  1818. at us,

  1819. and to

  1820. take us

  1821. safely home.

  1822. I seem

  1823. to be

  1824. quoting a

  1825. lot of

  1826. old hymns

  1827. for a

  1828. psalm that

  1829. talks about

  1830. singing a

  1831. new song,

  1832. but as we

  1833. often sing,

  1834. here I

  1835. raise my

  1836. Ebenezer,

  1837. here by

  1838. thy great

  1839. help I've

  1840. come,

  1841. and I

  1842. hope by

  1843. thy good

  1844. pleasure

  1845. safely to

  1846. arrive at

  1847. home.

  1848. we know

  1849. he is

  1850. trustworthy,

  1851. and therefore

  1852. we trust

  1853. him.

  1854. And then

  1855. in the

  1856. final few

  1857. verses,

  1858. we get

  1859. three ways

  1860. of how we

  1861. should

  1862. respond.

  1863. How we

  1864. should

  1865. respond to

  1866. this display

  1867. of God's

  1868. character,

  1869. both in

  1870. his works

  1871. of creation

  1872. and in

  1873. his ongoing

  1874. control and

  1875. care for

  1876. it.

  1877. Firstly,

  1878. in verse

  1879. 20,

  1880. we wait

  1881. and hope

  1882. for the

  1883. Lord.

  1884. He is our

  1885. help and

  1886. our shield.

  1887. We wait.

  1888. We trust

  1889. him.

  1890. We rely

  1891. on him.

  1892. We put

  1893. our hope

  1894. on him.

  1895. We know

  1896. he is

  1897. faithful,

  1898. and therefore

  1899. we commit

  1900. our lives,

  1901. our plans,

  1902. our hopes,

  1903. our futures

  1904. to him.

  1905. And then

  1906. verse 21,

  1907. in him

  1908. our hearts

  1909. rejoice,

  1910. for we

  1911. trust in

  1912. his holy

  1913. name.

  1914. Because we

  1915. trust in

  1916. him,

  1917. we rejoice.

  1918. We have

  1919. learned to

  1920. know the

  1921. wonder of

  1922. his character,

  1923. and therefore

  1924. we rejoice.

  1925. And then

  1926. finally,

  1927. verse 22,

  1928. may your

  1929. unfailing

  1930. love rest

  1931. upon us,

  1932. O Lord,

  1933. even as we

  1934. put our

  1935. hope in

  1936. you.

  1937. We pray

  1938. to him.

  1939. Because we

  1940. have trusted

  1941. him,

  1942. because we

  1943. have put our

  1944. hope in

  1945. him,

  1946. we pray that

  1947. his unfailing

  1948. love will be

  1949. with us.

  1950. We wait

  1951. on him.

  1952. We sing our

  1953. praise to

  1954. him, and

  1955. while we

  1956. wait,

  1957. we ask

  1958. that he

  1959. will act

  1960. in accordance

  1961. with the

  1962. character that

  1963. he's revealed

  1964. to us.

  1965. Not that he

  1966. could ever

  1967. be unfaithful

  1968. to his

  1969. character,

  1970. but by

  1971. doing so,

  1972. we show

  1973. our dependence

  1974. on him.

  1975. We ask him

  1976. to act,

  1977. and we trust

  1978. him to do

  1979. so, not

  1980. because of

  1981. what we

  1982. want, but

  1983. because of

  1984. who he

  1985. is.

  1986. will we

  1987. listen to

  1988. the

  1989. exhortation

  1990. of the

  1991. psalmist?

  1992. Will we

  1993. be those,

  1994. the

  1995. righteous,

  1996. who trust

  1997. and wait

  1998. on the

  1999. Lord,

  2000. and worship

  2001. him afresh,

  2002. with skill

  2003. and with

  2004. passion,

  2005. whether we

  2006. feel like

  2007. it or

  2008. not,

  2009. but because

  2010. he is

  2011. worthy

  2012. to be

  2013. praised.

  2014. Thank you.
