  1. and let's pray.

  2. Lord, we thank you that you've called us

  3. into your presence this evening

  4. to declare your praise and to hear your word.

  5. We ask now, I ask now,

  6. that the meditations of my heart,

  7. the words of my mouth

  8. and the meditations of all our hearts

  9. would be acceptable in your sight.

  10. Oh Lord, our rock and our redeemer.

  11. Amen.

  12. Well, this is the third of our series

  13. in soul-bearing psalms.

  14. Soul-bearing because on one hand,

  15. they lay our souls bare before God,

  16. the one who knows our hearts.

  17. Soul-bearing because having had our souls laid bare,

  18. the psalms strengthen us, nourish us

  19. to be strengthened and flourish

  20. as we live in God's presence,

  21. as God's people.

  22. Over the last, the two psalms

  23. over the last three weeks

  24. have woven together some themes

  25. that come together in this evening's psalm

  26. as Peter and Neil spoke to them

  27. over our past couple of studies

  28. with seeing how Psalm 19

  29. brings together creation

  30. and the command of God

  31. and how last week we saw

  32. how praise is woven into the life

  33. of God's people.

  34. And both of these come together

  35. as we've seen already

  36. as we've read and sung Psalm 24,

  37. our psalm for this evening.

  38. But as the psalms do,

  39. there's many ways,

  40. many facets for looking at these themes.

  41. And so we'll see this evening

  42. a different glimpse

  43. of how these things come together,

  44. of how it is that

  45. one who creates all things

  46. is also the one who saves,

  47. that the one who saves

  48. is the one in whose presence

  49. his people live.

  50. Well, we've read the psalm.

  51. I won't read it again,

  52. but we'll be picking it up

  53. point by point

  54. as we go along this evening.

  55. So I'd encourage you

  56. to open your Bibles

  57. and have them open in front of you.

  58. It's a short psalm,

  59. beautiful, powerful psalm.

  60. And there's just two things

  61. I want to note before we dig in.

  62. Thing number one

  63. to note before we dig in

  64. is that psalms have contexts.

  65. Those of you who are here

  66. in the lead up to Easter

  67. will remember the time

  68. that we spent in Psalm 22.

  69. And as part of that series,

  70. Christian Hofstra stood in this spot

  71. and mentioned to us

  72. how Psalm 22 came

  73. in a sequence of psalms,

  74. which actually starts

  75. in chapter in Psalm 20

  76. and runs through to our psalm

  77. in Psalm 24.

  78. Psalms 20 and 21

  79. are the prayer

  80. for the anointed king

  81. and rejoicing

  82. in that king's strength.

  83. Psalm 22 tells us

  84. of the afflicted king

  85. who is vindicated.

  86. Psalm 23 speaks to us

  87. of the shepherd king

  88. who provides.

  89. And so we come this evening

  90. to Psalm 24,

  91. the glorious king,

  92. the king of glory.

  93. And all of these five psalms

  94. then weave together for us

  95. a picture of the king,

  96. who his people are

  97. under the king

  98. and how we all live together

  99. in the presence of God.

  100. How that longing,

  101. perseverance,

  102. provision,

  103. trust,

  104. faith

  105. inform our minds

  106. and hearts

  107. as we come to Psalm 24.

  108. Well, we won't be

  109. picking up all of those themes

  110. this evening,

  111. but as you reflect

  112. on the psalms,

  113. I'd encourage you

  114. just to have an eye out

  115. for how the psalms

  116. weave together

  117. a picture for us

  118. of God and people

  119. in the world

  120. to which he calls us to live.

  121. Second thing to note

  122. as we dig in

  123. is that psalms,

  124. in case you haven't noticed,

  125. are poems.

  126. They're poems.

  127. And we see in the psalms

  128. the discipline

  129. and delight

  130. of the poet's art

  131. as the words

  132. are woven together,

  133. not just thrown together,

  134. not that any of the words

  135. of Scripture

  136. are thrown together,

  137. but woven with care

  138. and sometimes

  139. in striking ways.

  140. And we want to just pause

  141. and read a little bit slowly

  142. as we see

  143. the art and craft

  144. of the poet employed

  145. in the service

  146. of the communion

  147. of God.

  148. It reminded me

  149. as I was reflecting on this

  150. of a modern hymn writer's line,

  151. a hymn we sometimes sing,

  152. come now fount

  153. of every blessing,

  154. tune my heart

  155. to sing thy grace.

  156. I think as we attend

  157. to the poetry

  158. of the psalm,

  159. it's art and craft,

  160. we have our hearts

  161. tuned

  162. to the psalmist's key.

  163. So that's partly

  164. what we want to do tonight

  165. is spend a little time

  166. reading the psalm

  167. and then spend a little time

  168. having the psalm read us.

  169. So that's our two-point structure

  170. for this evening's sermon.

  171. We read Psalm 24.

  172. And point two is

  173. Psalm 24 reads us.

  174. As is sometimes the case

  175. with a few points,

  176. there's a few sub-points

  177. to go with that.

  178. That's 15 sub-points

  179. and you laugh.

  180. Susan and I were watching

  181. a conference sermon this week

  182. and a terrific sermon.

  183. It was really helpful.

  184. And the speaker said,

  185. well, it's the end of the day.

  186. This is a hard slot to fill.

  187. So just one-point sermon

  188. this evening,

  189. 22 sub-points.

  190. And people laughed,

  191. but there were.

  192. And so there are tonight,

  193. not 22,

  194. no,

  195. just 15.

  196. But in Psalm 24,

  197. if you've got your Bible open,

  198. you can see quite readily,

  199. you can probably even see from there

  200. that it falls into three

  201. quite neat sections.

  202. Verses one and two

  203. speak of the creator.

  204. Verses three to six

  205. speak of the creature

  206. who is also a worshiper.

  207. Verses seven to ten

  208. speak of the king.

  209. And we often see these,

  210. commentaries often see these

  211. as three quite distinct sections.

  212. And they are distinct,

  213. but we'll want to revisit

  214. this judgment

  215. when Psalm 24 reads us.

  216. How do these three parts

  217. of the psalm connect together?

  218. And we'll be able to make

  219. a judgment about that

  220. when we see what each part contains.

  221. So,

  222. we read Psalm 24,

  223. we start at verse one,

  224. and here's sub-point one.

  225. God owns the world.

  226. God owns all there is.

  227. And already as we look at verse one,

  228. we see the poet's art and craft

  229. in the service of communion with God.

  230. How is it that the earth

  231. and the world are related?

  232. And if we just pause for a moment

  233. on this first line of the poem,

  234. I think we'll already get to a sense

  235. for the journey

  236. that this psalmist is taking us on.

  237. The earth.

  238. We've heard of that before,

  239. haven't we?

  240. In the beginning,

  241. God created the heavens

  242. and the earth.

  243. The earth is mentioned,

  244. I've got it here,

  245. approximately 2,508 times

  246. in the Old Testament.

  247. That's very common.

  248. In fact,

  249. it's the most inclusive way

  250. of speaking

  251. of the world

  252. in which that God has made.

  253. It's the earth.

  254. And what about the earth?

  255. It's fullness.

  256. Say the old translations,

  257. which I happen to like

  258. from time to time.

  259. Everything in it.

  260. The earth is the Lord.

  261. So the psalmist starts

  262. by drawing the sphere

  263. of God's ownership

  264. as large as possible.

  265. What's the next line?

  266. The world

  267. and all who live in it.

  268. Now we might think,

  269. well,

  270. we've seen that already.

  271. It's in the first part.

  272. Ah,

  273. not so fast.

  274. We have a poet

  275. at work here.

  276. And in fact,

  277. the word for world

  278. is quite a special word.

  279. It's only used

  280. 36 times.

  281. It's only used

  282. in poetry.

  283. It always refers

  284. to the ordered world

  285. in which human beings live,

  286. in which God sustains

  287. by his power.

  288. It's the place

  289. that we inhabit

  290. that God makes for us.

  291. It's a very special place then.

  292. And it's not just everything.

  293. It's all who live in it.

  294. It's every living being.

  295. And in fact,

  296. the way this is phrased,

  297. it's a little bit like

  298. being a citizen of the world.

  299. It's the inhabitants.

  300. It's you and me.

  301. It's the people

  302. who God has made

  303. to live in this world.

  304. So let's just step back

  305. from verse 1 for a second.

  306. So what do we see here?

  307. The poet starts with

  308. the largest imaginable

  309. claim about what God has made

  310. and what God owns

  311. and then starts to focus in

  312. on the world that God creates

  313. for us

  314. and for his human creatures

  315. to inhabit.

  316. So we get a sense already

  317. of how the poet

  318. is starting to use

  319. this poem

  320. to focus in

  321. something about God

  322. and people.

  323. Not all the sub-points

  324. will take that long.

  325. Some of them

  326. will be very short indeed.

  327. But we've started a journey

  328. in this case.

  329. Point 2,

  330. still in verse 1.

  331. The Lord owns

  332. all there is.

  333. Well,

  334. we'll see a question

  335. and answer strategy

  336. emerge in the later part

  337. of the psalm.

  338. But in a sense,

  339. this first verse

  340. also answers a question.

  341. Now,

  342. if I read it

  343. two different ways,

  344. you'll see what the questions are.

  345. Let me try it.

  346. the earth is the Lord's

  347. and everything in it.

  348. The earth is the Lord's

  349. and everything in it.

  350. Okay.

  351. That's a subtle distinction.

  352. But one question is,

  353. what does the Lord own?

  354. Well,

  355. the Lord owns the earth

  356. and everything in it.

  357. The other question is,

  358. whose is all this?

  359. All this?

  360. This is the Lord's.

  361. And in fact,

  362. the way the psalmist

  363. sets it up,

  364. it's pretty clear

  365. that it's the second of these.

  366. Who owns all this?

  367. Do you own it?

  368. Does some alien deity own it?

  369. Who owns this?

  370. The Lord owns this

  371. and everything it contains.

  372. Now,

  373. it might seem a subtle point

  374. just to focus

  375. our attention there.

  376. But I think,

  377. I hope,

  378. it will bear some fruit

  379. as we read on.

  380. Point three.

  381. In verse two,

  382. he founded it upon the seas

  383. and established it

  384. upon the waters.

  385. Verse two gives us

  386. the title deeds.

  387. Why is this the Lord's?

  388. Quite simply,

  389. he made it.

  390. It's his.

  391. But we're quite used

  392. to seeing and saying

  393. these words

  394. and we might miss

  395. some of the oddity

  396. that they bring us.

  397. What kind of piece of work

  398. is this?

  399. Some of you will know

  400. the song,

  401. The Wise Men Built His House

  402. Upon the Rock.

  403. The Wise Men Built His House

  404. Upon the Rock.

  405. What's the Lord build on?

  406. He founded it upon the seas

  407. and established it

  408. upon the waters.

  409. Now, we've got architects

  410. and builders

  411. in this congregation.

  412. I think they'd recommend to you

  413. not to use this building strategy

  414. yourself.

  415. So what does the psalmist see

  416. when he says

  417. the Lord founded it

  418. upon the seas

  419. and established it

  420. upon the waters?

  421. Well, we need to get

  422. a little sense

  423. for a world

  424. that we look out on

  425. that is not ours.

  426. I mean, we look up

  427. and we look into

  428. infinite space.

  429. We see stars,

  430. the closest star

  431. light years away.

  432. We see and know

  433. that some of those stars

  434. are galaxies

  435. of billions of stars.

  436. And we look down

  437. and we see beyond

  438. this platform

  439. the Earth's crust,

  440. magma,

  441. tectonic plates.

  442. If we keep going

  443. in the neighborhood

  444. of New Zealand,

  445. come out the other side

  446. in more infinite space.

  447. that's not what

  448. the psalmist saw.

  449. The psalmist saw

  450. a firmament

  451. that God had put in place

  452. and in that firmament

  453. had placed stars

  454. to be lights.

  455. Looked down

  456. and saw

  457. the Earth

  458. beneath

  459. and saw

  460. in that

  461. ground

  462. underneath it

  463. the waters

  464. of chaos

  465. that threatened

  466. human existence.

  467. It's why we see

  468. lines like this

  469. in the Psalms.

  470. This is Psalm 29,

    Psalms 29:10

  471. verse 10.

  472. The Lord sits

  473. enthroned

  474. on the flood.

  475. Why is the Lord

  476. enthroned

  477. on the flood?

  478. Because it's

  479. in setting bounds

  480. on these

  481. subterranean

  482. chaotic waters

  483. that the Earth

  484. can emerge,

  485. that there can be

  486. ordered life,

  487. that there can be

  488. agriculture,

  489. that there can be

  490. a flourishing

  491. human society.

  492. There's

  493. dozens of passages

  494. like this

  495. in the Old Testament

  496. once we start

  497. to see them

  498. in the book of Job

  499. and in the Psalms

  500. and in Isaiah

  501. in particular.

  502. So the work

  503. of creation

  504. that entitles

  505. the Lord

  506. to ownership,

  507. this is the point

  508. in verse 2,

  509. is that it brings

  510. about the possibility

  511. of human flourishing

  512. for our lives

  513. to be lived

  514. in this world

  515. that is the Lord's

  516. for he made it.

  517. Point 4.

  518. If verses 1 and 2

  519. say that there's

  520. an everywhere

  521. that belongs

  522. to the Lord,

  523. verse 3 says

  524. that there is

  525. a here

  526. which especially

  527. matters.

  528. Who may ascend

  529. the hill

  530. of the Lord?

  531. Who may stand

  532. in his holy

  533. place?

  534. There isn't

  535. everywhere,

  536. but there is

  537. a here,

  538. there is

  539. a watery

  540. foundation,

  541. but there is

  542. a mountain

  543. of God.

  544. And we

  545. as pilgrims

  546. now stand

  547. at the bottom

  548. of that mountain

  549. looking up

  550. and wondering

  551. what it is

  552. to be

  553. in the presence

  554. of God.

  555. Point 5,

  556. still in verse 3,

  557. this assumes

  558. that the mountain

  559. of God

  560. is a place

  561. for human

  562. habitation too.

  563. And the language

  564. does suggest

  565. the journey

  566. of the pilgrim

  567. as the pilgrim

  568. goes up

  569. to Jerusalem

  570. to the house

  571. of God.

  572. You'll remember

  573. the set of psalms

  574. that begin

  575. in Psalm 120

  576. and go through

  577. to Psalm 134

  578. and each one

  579. of them

  580. is called

  581. the Song

  582. of Ascents,

  583. the Song

  584. of Pilgrims

  585. going up

  586. to Jerusalem.

  587. Probably the

  588. clearest of these

  589. that reflect

  590. our theme

  591. is in

  592. Psalm 122.

  593. I'll just read

  594. you a couple

  595. of verses

  596. from it.

  597. Jerusalem

  598. is built

  599. like a city

  600. closely compacted

  601. together.

  602. That is where

  603. the tribes

  604. go up,

  605. the tribes

  606. of the Lord,

  607. to praise

  608. the name

  609. of the Lord

  610. according to

  611. the statute

  612. given to Israel.

  613. It's that

  614. impulse

  615. to be a

  616. pilgrim

  617. to the place

  618. of God

  619. that we see

  620. here in

  621. this verse.

  622. But who

  623. may ascend

  624. the hill

  625. of the Lord?

  626. We see

  627. this question

  628. asked.

  629. Who can

  630. stand in

  631. his holy

  632. place?

  633. But we're

  634. going up.

  635. We're going

  636. up.

  637. Verse

  638. 4.6

  639. if you're

  640. keeping track

  641. gives us

  642. the moral

  643. requirements

  644. fitting for

  645. the Lord's

  646. holy place.

  647. He who

  648. has clean

  649. hands

  650. and a

  651. pure heart.

  652. That

  653. answers the

  654. question of

  655. who.

  656. The one

  657. with clean

  658. hands,

  659. a pure

  660. heart,

  661. who does

  662. not lift

  663. up his

  664. soul to

  665. an idol

  666. or swear

  667. by what

  668. is false.

  669. Now there's

  670. two other

  671. places in

  672. the Old

  673. Testament

  674. where we

  675. read this

  676. kind of

  677. question and

  678. answer.

  679. One is in

  680. Psalm 15,

  681. just a few

  682. psalms back.

  683. If you want

  684. to read it

  685. later,

  686. the whole

  687. psalm fills

  688. out some

  689. of the

  690. things that

  691. we see in

  692. these couple

  693. of verses.

  694. Another place

  695. is in Isaiah

  696. 33, in

  697. fact.

  698. Isaiah 33

    Isaiah 33:14–16

  699. verses 14

  700. to 16.

  701. Where again

  702. the question

  703. is asked,

  704. who can

  705. stand in

  706. this place?

  707. God is a

  708. consuming fire.

  709. And the

  710. answer comes.

  711. And it's a

  712. remarkable answer.

  713. And again,

  714. at the risk

  715. of thinking

  716. we're going

  717. really slow

  718. here.

  719. Let's just

  720. take a

  721. lingering look

  722. at verse

  723. 4.

  724. He who

  725. has,

  726. or just

  727. says,

  728. if I

  729. were giving

  730. you sort

  731. of my

  732. version,

  733. who may

  734. stand in

  735. his holy

  736. place,

  737. the clean

  738. handed,

  739. the pure

  740. hearted.

  741. Very

  742. terse

  743. language.

  744. And what

  745. do we have

  746. then with

  747. hands and

  748. heart?

  749. that are

  750. clean and

  751. pure?

  752. Well,

  753. we have

  754. hands,

  755. the external,

  756. what we

  757. do.

  758. In Hebrew

  759. thinking,

  760. the heart,

  761. not an

  762. emotive

  763. faculty,

  764. but a

  765. cognitive

  766. faculty.

  767. It's what

  768. I think

  769. with.

  770. So we

  771. have our

  772. thoughts

  773. and our

  774. deeds

  775. here,

  776. positively

  777. framed.

  778. It's what

  779. we do

  780. with

  781. cleanness,

  782. with

  783. purity.

  784. And we

  785. might think

  786. this is a

  787. very obvious

  788. set pair,

  789. comes up

  790. everywhere.

  791. Well,

  792. it's pretty

  793. unusual,

  794. in fact.

  795. We see it

  796. one other

  797. place in

  798. the Psalms,

  799. Psalm 73,

  800. which,

  801. as some

  802. of you

  803. might know,

  804. is a

  805. fairly

  806. downcast

  807. song.

  808. I'll

  809. just read

  810. a couple

  811. of verses

  812. from it

  813. for you.

  814. Surely

  815. God is

  816. good to

  817. Israel,

  818. to those

  819. who are

  820. pure in

  821. heart.

  822. But as

  823. for me,

  824. my feet

  825. had almost

  826. slipped,

  827. for I

  828. envied the

  829. arrogant when

  830. I saw the

  831. prosperity of

  832. the wicked.

  833. Something,

  834. it seems,

  835. to this

  836. psalmist

  837. has gone

  838. wrong.

  839. And in

  840. verse 13,

  841. Surely

  842. in vain I

  843. have kept

  844. my heart

  845. pure.

  846. In vain I

  847. have washed

  848. my hands

  849. in innocence.

  850. Echoing the

  851. words of

  852. our song,

  853. implying that

  854. if I'm

  855. leading this

  856. kind of

  857. life,

  858. there's

  859. something I

  860. should be

  861. getting back

  862. from God.

  863. Well,

  864. there's one

  865. other place

  866. then where

  867. this language

  868. also comes

  869. in the

  870. Old Testament.

  871. There's one

  872. person of

  873. whom it

  874. is said

  875. he had

  876. clean hands

  877. and a

  878. pure heart.

  879. Should I

  880. have a

  881. prize?

  882. Anyone?

  883. No.

  884. No.

  885. No.

  886. No.

  887. No.

  888. No.

  889. Genesis

  890. 20 gives

  891. us the

  892. second story

  893. of Abraham

  894. passing off

  895. his wife

  896. as his

  897. sister.

  898. Well,

  899. she was

  900. his

  901. sister,

  902. but

  903. nonetheless,

  904. in a

  905. kind of

  906. way,

  907. we won't

  908. be going

  909. there

  910. much.

  911. But there's

  912. a Canaanite

  913. pagan king

  914. named Abimelech

  915. who takes

  916. Sarah into

  917. his household

  918. and God

  919. comes to

  920. him in the

  921. night and

  922. says,

  923. you're a

  924. dead man.

  925. you've got

  926. another man's

  927. wife.

  928. And Abimelech,

  929. that's the

  930. name of the

  931. king,

  932. says,

  933. but it was

  934. in the

  935. cleanness of

  936. my hands

  937. and the

  938. purity of

  939. my heart

  940. that I

  941. did this

  942. thing.

  943. I had

  944. integrity

  945. when I

  946. did this.

  947. And God

  948. says in

  949. the dream

  950. of the

  951. night,

  952. I know,

  953. that's why I

  954. prevented you

  955. from doing

  956. anything wrong.

  957. It's fascinating

  958. to think that

  959. the one

  960. person in the

  961. Old Testament

  962. that has

  963. this character

  964. is a little

  965. bit like we

  966. saw in this

  967. morning's

  968. sermon,

  969. one who

  970. is not

  971. numbered among

  972. the people

  973. of God.

  974. But we

  975. have then

  976. in these

  977. first few

  978. words the

  979. positive side

  980. of what it

  981. is to be

  982. one fit for

  983. the presence

  984. of this

  985. God.

  986. In the

  987. next couple

  988. of lines,

  989. who does

  990. not lift up

  991. his soul

  992. to an

  993. idol or

  994. swear by

  995. what is

  996. false,

  997. we see

  998. again the

  999. internal and

  1000. the

  1001. intentions

  1002. of the

  1003. soul,

  1004. the

  1005. swearing,

  1006. the speaking

  1007. of the

  1008. mouth.

  1009. But in

  1010. negative

  1011. terms now,

  1012. what is

  1013. purposed

  1014. towards

  1015. false

  1016. gods

  1017. and

  1018. false

  1019. ends

  1020. ought not

  1021. to be

  1022. for the

  1023. person who

  1024. comes into

  1025. the presence

  1026. of this

  1027. God.

  1028. So we

  1029. see a

  1030. remarkably

  1031. complete

  1032. picture in

  1033. just this

  1034. very short

  1035. verse of

  1036. things framed

  1037. positively and

  1038. negatively of

  1039. our thoughts,

  1040. our words,

  1041. and our

  1042. deeds as

  1043. directed to

  1044. God, our

  1045. neighbor, and

  1046. ourselves.

  1047. It's a

  1048. remarkably

  1049. comprehensive,

  1050. ethical,

  1051. moral

  1052. guideline in

  1053. a very

  1054. small compass.

  1055. God, our

  1056. love, and

  1057. it's who

  1058. can stand

  1059. in the

  1060. presence

  1061. of God.

  1062. One who

  1063. has clean

  1064. hands, pure

  1065. heart, does

  1066. not lift up

  1067. his soul to

  1068. an idol or

  1069. swear by

  1070. what is

  1071. false.

  1072. Point

  1073. seven brings

  1074. us to

  1075. verse five.

  1076. This one

  1077. will receive a

  1078. blessing from

  1079. the Lord and

  1080. vindication from

  1081. God, his

  1082. savior.

  1083. And here we

  1084. see the ends

  1085. of actions,

  1086. not in terms

  1087. of payoff, as

  1088. the psalmist of

  1089. Psalm 73

  1090. began to

  1091. think.

  1092. Of course, the

  1093. thing is resolved

  1094. in a slightly

  1095. different way in

  1096. Psalm 73.

  1097. But here, as it

  1098. comes to be

  1099. lived out in

  1100. the life of

  1101. this worshiper

  1102. fit for the

  1103. presence of

  1104. God.

  1105. I'd like to

  1106. slightly tweak

  1107. the translation

  1108. here for us.

  1109. He will receive

  1110. a blessing from

  1111. God.

  1112. I think better

  1113. put here would

  1114. be he will

  1115. bear.

  1116. in his

  1117. life.

  1118. A blessing

  1119. from the

  1120. Lord and

  1121. vindication,

  1122. that is the

  1123. righteousness of

  1124. God.

  1125. So it's not so

  1126. much that do

  1127. this and you

  1128. get receive

  1129. payment in

  1130. kind, but

  1131. it's do this

  1132. and your life

  1133. bears in

  1134. it these

  1135. divine qualities

  1136. of blessing

  1137. and of

  1138. righteousness

  1139. that come

  1140. for the one

  1141. who is fit

  1142. for the hill

  1143. of the Lord

  1144. and his

  1145. holy place.

  1146. verse 6.8

  1147. it says here,

  1148. such is the

  1149. generation of

  1150. those who

  1151. seek him,

  1152. those who

  1153. seek your

  1154. face,

  1155. O God of

  1156. Jacob.

  1157. And it

  1158. might not

  1159. strike us

  1160. until we

  1161. pause to

  1162. see this

  1163. poet at

  1164. work that

  1165. this is the

  1166. first time

  1167. in the

  1168. psalm we

  1169. hit a

  1170. plural.

  1171. It's not

  1172. about a

  1173. singular you

  1174. or a him

  1175. or a her.

  1176. It's about

  1177. a them

  1178. and a

  1179. those.

  1180. It's not

  1181. just about

  1182. an individual.

  1183. This is the

  1184. generation of

  1185. those who

  1186. seek the

  1187. Lord.

  1188. Not only a

  1189. pilgrimage

  1190. undertaken by

  1191. the individual,

  1192. but undertaken

  1193. by all those

  1194. who would

  1195. belong to

  1196. the God

  1197. of Jacob.

  1198. point nine

  1199. brings us

  1200. to the

  1201. latter part

  1202. of the

  1203. psalm.

  1204. Lift up

  1205. your heads,

  1206. O you

  1207. gates.

  1208. And in

  1209. verses seven

  1210. and verse nine,

  1211. lift up

  1212. your heads,

  1213. O you

  1214. gates.

  1215. This very

  1216. clear,

  1217. repeated

  1218. pattern.

  1219. Perhaps

  1220. one of the

  1221. most famous

  1222. or at least

  1223. one of the

  1224. most resonant

  1225. portions of

  1226. our psalm.

  1227. If there's

  1228. any Messiah

  1229. fans here,

  1230. I mean,

  1231. Handel's

  1232. Messiah now.

  1233. Lots of

  1234. Messiah fans

  1235. here.

  1236. You might

  1237. know that

  1238. in part two

  1239. of the

  1240. Messiah,

  1241. scene two,

  1242. movement 33,

  1243. these are the

  1244. words that

  1245. Handel uses

  1246. to sing the

  1247. declaration of

  1248. the ascension

  1249. of the

  1250. resurrected

  1251. Christ.

  1252. And this

  1253. is the

  1254. section that

  1255. leads some

  1256. people to

  1257. believe that

  1258. the words

  1259. of Psalm

  1260. 24 have

  1261. to do

  1262. with

  1263. perhaps

  1264. a

  1265. celebration

  1266. of the

  1267. procession

  1268. of the

  1269. Ark of

  1270. the

  1271. Covenant

  1272. into the

  1273. temple,

  1274. even though

  1275. we have

  1276. no evidence

  1277. for a

  1278. celebration

  1279. of the

  1280. procession

  1281. of the

  1282. Ark of

  1283. the

  1284. Covenant

  1285. into the

  1286. temple.

  1287. But it

  1288. just,

  1289. it has

  1290. that kind

  1291. of evocative

  1292. language,

  1293. doesn't it?

  1294. Here again,

  1295. we need to

  1296. make the

  1297. psalm just

  1298. a little

  1299. bit strange.

  1300. lift up

  1301. your heads

  1302. or you

  1303. gates,

  1304. be lifted

  1305. up your

  1306. ancient

  1307. doors.

  1308. We picture

  1309. the port

  1310. collis being

  1311. flung up.

  1312. Is that

  1313. what you

  1314. picture?

  1315. Don't

  1316. picture that.

  1317. The gates

  1318. of ancient

  1319. Near Eastern

  1320. cities,

  1321. temples,

  1322. all of

  1323. them,

  1324. swung on

  1325. hinges,

  1326. just like

  1327. our doors

  1328. do.

  1329. I think

  1330. it's kind

  1331. of important

  1332. to get

  1333. that picture

  1334. in our

  1335. minds,

  1336. because these

  1337. gates aren't

  1338. going to keep

  1339. out this

  1340. king.

  1341. It's not

  1342. a question

  1343. of requesting

  1344. them to

  1345. be open.

  1346. So what's

  1347. going on

  1348. when it

  1349. says,

  1350. lift up

  1351. your heads

  1352. or you

  1353. gates,

  1354. be lifted

  1355. up your

  1356. ancient

  1357. doors?

  1358. Well,

  1359. here in

  1360. this world

  1361. that God

  1362. has made,

  1363. there seems

  1364. that there

  1365. is something

  1366. of human

  1367. fabrication

  1368. too,

  1369. but

  1370. personified.

  1371. Lift up

  1372. your heads.

  1373. It's inviting

  1374. the entranceway

  1375. to the king

  1376. of glory

  1377. to be

  1378. jubilant,

  1379. to be

  1380. exultant,

  1381. to be

  1382. joyful,

  1383. to be

  1384. proud,

  1385. because of

  1386. who's going

  1387. to come

  1388. through those

  1389. gates.

  1390. Stand

  1391. tall,

  1392. be exultant

  1393. at the

  1394. coming king.

  1395. And finally,

  1396. in verses

  1397. 8 and 10,

  1398. who is this

  1399. king of glory?

  1400. And we

  1401. have an

  1402. answer that

  1403. again might

  1404. strike us

  1405. as a little

  1406. bit surprising.

  1407. Who is this

  1408. king of glory?

  1409. Well,

  1410. it's pretty

  1411. military,

  1412. in fact.

  1413. The Lord

  1414. strong and

  1415. mighty,

  1416. the Lord

  1417. mighty in

  1418. battle.

  1419. In fact,

  1420. we could

  1421. say a

  1422. battle-hardened

  1423. warrior for

  1424. that second

  1425. line.

  1426. And in

  1427. verse 10,

  1428. who is this

  1429. king of glory?

  1430. The Lord

  1431. Almighty,

  1432. which older

  1433. translations will

  1434. give us as

  1435. the Lord of

  1436. hosts,

  1437. and which we,

  1438. some of us,

  1439. become used

  1440. to singing

  1441. in Chris

  1442. Tomlin's

  1443. yet more

  1444. literal translation

  1445. of this

  1446. phrase.

  1447. I know

  1448. who goes

  1449. before me.

  1450. I know

  1451. who stands

  1452. behind.

  1453. The God

  1454. of angel

  1455. armies

  1456. is always

  1457. by my

  1458. side.

  1459. This is

  1460. the king

  1461. of glory

  1462. who's

  1463. entering

  1464. in.

  1465. Well,

  1466. that's the

  1467. ten sub

  1468. points,

  1469. and there

  1470. is yet

  1471. more that

  1472. could be

  1473. said,

  1474. but we'll

  1475. leave it

  1476. there.

  1477. I hope

  1478. that's been

  1479. a help,

  1480. just reading

  1481. Psalm 24

  1482. and seeing

  1483. perhaps some

  1484. facets of it

  1485. that we

  1486. might not

  1487. have contemplated

  1488. before.

  1489. But having

  1490. read Psalm

  1491. 24 and

  1492. with some

  1493. of those

  1494. thoughts in

  1495. mind,

  1496. we want

  1497. to let

  1498. Psalm 24

  1499. read us.

  1500. You'll be

  1501. glad to

  1502. know we've

  1503. got only

  1504. five sub

  1505. points now.

  1506. First of

  1507. all,

  1508. then,

  1509. I want

  1510. to revisit

  1511. that question

  1512. we posed

  1513. about the

  1514. three sections

  1515. of the

  1516. Psalm at

  1517. the beginning.

  1518. We can

  1519. see them

  1520. quite clearly.

  1521. Creator,

  1522. creature,

  1523. king.

  1524. But I

  1525. hope you

  1526. can see

  1527. now how

  1528. they work

  1529. together to

  1530. give us

  1531. one

  1532. interdependent

  1533. picture as

  1534. we start

  1535. with the

  1536. very foundations

  1537. of God's

  1538. created

  1539. order.

  1540. And then

  1541. work up

  1542. to the

  1543. world that

  1544. humans

  1545. inhabit.

  1546. And then

  1547. stand at

  1548. the bottom

  1549. of the

  1550. mountain of

  1551. God and

  1552. look up.

  1553. And as

  1554. we look

  1555. up,

  1556. ask,

  1557. can we

  1558. go up

  1559. this

  1560. mountain?

  1561. And as

  1562. the king

  1563. comes,

  1564. the cry

  1565. goes out

  1566. to the

  1567. gates on

  1568. the pinnacle

  1569. of the

  1570. mountain to

  1571. be lifted

  1572. up.

  1573. And you

  1574. can see

  1575. that we're

  1576. going up,

  1577. up,

  1578. up,

  1579. up.

  1580. who can

  1581. go up

  1582. the hill

  1583. of the

  1584. Lord?

  1585. Who can,

  1586. the word

  1587. isn't

  1588. actually

  1589. stand,

  1590. I'm afraid

  1591. to tell

  1592. you again,

  1593. it's who

  1594. can arise

  1595. in his

  1596. holy place

  1597. as if

  1598. standing up

  1599. from kneeling?

  1600. Who can

  1601. ascend it?

  1602. And then you

  1603. have the

  1604. gates

  1605. themselves

  1606. proud,

  1607. exultant,

  1608. rejoicing

  1609. at the name,

  1610. at the coming

  1611. of the

  1612. creator king.

  1613. I think we

  1614. see one

  1615. movement from

  1616. bottom to

  1617. top.

  1618. And I

  1619. think there

  1620. is one

  1621. other place

  1622. in the,

  1623. if this

  1624. helps,

  1625. in the

  1626. Bible,

  1627. where we

  1628. see a

  1629. dynamic like

  1630. this one.

  1631. And it

  1632. was when a

  1633. king came

  1634. into Jerusalem.

  1635. In Luke's

  1636. account of

  1637. the triumphal

  1638. entry,

  1639. Jesus is

  1640. being acclaimed

  1641. as the

  1642. coming king.

  1643. blessed

  1644. be the

  1645. king who

  1646. comes in

  1647. the name

  1648. of the

  1649. Lord.

  1650. And the

  1651. disciples who

  1652. are saying

  1653. this are

  1654. rebuked.

  1655. And Jesus

  1656. replies,

  1657. I tell you,

  1658. if these

  1659. were silent,

  1660. the very

  1661. stones would

  1662. cry out.

  1663. And it's as if

  1664. Psalm 24 is

  1665. giving us this

  1666. picture where

  1667. actually the

  1668. stones are

  1669. crying out,

  1670. the stones are

  1671. standing erect

  1672. at the coming

  1673. king as

  1674. God's people

  1675. gather,

  1676. to worship.

  1677. So that's,

  1678. I hope,

  1679. gives us a

  1680. sense for

  1681. the shape of

  1682. this psalm and

  1683. maybe starts to

  1684. suggest how it

  1685. claims us.

  1686. So briefly,

  1687. a second point.

  1688. What is the

  1689. setting for

  1690. this psalm?

  1691. I hinted a

  1692. little bit

  1693. earlier that

  1694. there are some

  1695. speculations about

  1696. where this

  1697. psalm comes

  1698. from.

  1699. Is it part of

  1700. a liturgical

  1701. movement?

  1702. Is it part of

  1703. a seasonal

  1704. celebration?

  1705. Was it used

  1706. as an

  1707. enthronement

  1708. psalm?

  1709. How was it

  1710. used?

  1711. And the

  1712. very short

  1713. answer is,

  1714. we don't

  1715. know.

  1716. It doesn't

  1717. say.

  1718. So what

  1719. does the

  1720. psalm tell

  1721. us about

  1722. itself?

  1723. What's this

  1724. psalm about?

  1725. God?

  1726. It affirms the

  1727. basis on

  1728. which God

  1729. and people

  1730. live together,

  1731. quite simply.

  1732. The

  1733. creator king

  1734. comes to

  1735. his people.

  1736. Who are

  1737. the people

  1738. fit for the

  1739. creator king?

  1740. It's just

  1741. one thought,

  1742. really.

  1743. It affirms

  1744. the basis

  1745. on which God

  1746. and people

  1747. live together.

  1748. other.

  1749. So how

  1750. does that

  1751. claim us?

  1752. Third thing,

  1753. how does

  1754. creation claim

  1755. us?

  1756. In verses

  1757. one and

  1758. two.

  1759. We have

  1760. a very

  1761. understandable

  1762. tendency to

  1763. think that we

  1764. see in

  1765. creation a

  1766. powerful God

  1767. and that's

  1768. amazing and

  1769. that's true.

  1770. But that's

  1771. one of the

  1772. reasons why

  1773. I spent a

  1774. little bit of

  1775. time trying

  1776. to give us

  1777. another view

  1778. of the

  1779. universe that

  1780. isn't ours.

  1781. It's the view

  1782. of these

  1783. pre-scientific

  1784. psalmists.

  1785. They look at

  1786. the ordered

  1787. world,

  1788. the firmament

  1789. above,

  1790. the ground

  1791. beneath,

  1792. see that the

  1793. world flourishes

  1794. and this is the

  1795. response that

  1796. they have.

  1797. Fearing the

  1798. God who can

  1799. subdue chaos.

  1800. loyal to

  1801. the one who

  1802. made it

  1803. possible for

  1804. me to

  1805. live.

  1806. Trust in

  1807. the one who

  1808. sustains the

  1809. world so

  1810. that life can

  1811. flourish.

  1812. In fact,

  1813. this is exactly

  1814. Moses' logic

  1815. as he's

  1816. instructing the

  1817. people of

  1818. Israel before

  1819. they enter the

  1820. promised land

  1821. in Deuteronomy

  1822. 10.

  1823. Just a couple

  1824. of verses

  1825. there.

  1826. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 10:14

  1827. 10,

  1828. verse 14.

  1829. Moses says

  1830. to the people,

  1831. to the Lord

  1832. your God

  1833. belongs the

  1834. heavens,

  1835. even the

  1836. highest heavens,

  1837. the earth

  1838. and everything

  1839. in it.

  1840. Sounds familiar,

  1841. doesn't it?

  1842. So what's the

  1843. corollary?

  1844. What's the

  1845. implication of

  1846. that?

  1847. He continues,

  1848. Moses does,

  1849. fear the

  1850. Lord your

  1851. God and

  1852. serve him.

  1853. Hold fast

  1854. to him

  1855. and take

  1856. your oaths

  1857. in his name.

  1858. He is the

  1859. one you

  1860. praise.

  1861. He is

  1862. your God

  1863. who performed

  1864. for you

  1865. great and

  1866. awesome wonders.

  1867. In a sense,

  1868. that's our

  1869. Psalm 24

  1870. in a nutshell.

  1871. That's how it

  1872. claims us.

  1873. By

  1874. demanding of us,

  1875. if we see it,

  1876. once we see it,

  1877. demanding of us

  1878. our loyalty,

  1879. demanding of us

  1880. our trust,

  1881. demanding of us

  1882. our obedience,

  1883. obedience.

  1884. Which leads

  1885. us forth

  1886. to consider

  1887. a little bit

  1888. more this

  1889. response in

  1890. verses 3

  1891. to 5,

  1892. the identity

  1893. of the one

  1894. who's able

  1895. to stand

  1896. on the hill

  1897. of the Lord.

  1898. Now,

  1899. there is one

  1900. way of thinking

  1901. about this

  1902. question and

  1903. answer that

  1904. could go like

  1905. this.

  1906. Who may

  1907. ascend the

  1908. hill of the

  1909. Lord?

  1910. Well,

  1911. he who has

  1912. clean hands

  1913. and a pure

  1914. heart.

  1915. Forget it.

  1916. no one

  1917. can stand

  1918. in the

  1919. hill of

  1920. the Lord.

  1921. I understand

  1922. that reading,

  1923. but I don't

  1924. think that's

  1925. what the

  1926. psalmist wants

  1927. us to see

  1928. here.

  1929. I don't

  1930. think that's

  1931. what Psalm

  1932. 15 wants

  1933. us to see.

  1934. That's not

  1935. what Isaiah

  1936. 33 wants

  1937. us to see.

  1938. Unless this

  1939. seemed like

  1940. an Old

  1941. Testament thing,

  1942. let me just

  1943. point to the

  1944. one place in

  1945. the New

  1946. Testament where

  1947. this language

  1948. comes together

  1949. in quite a

  1950. striking way.

  1951. we pointed

  1952. out the

  1953. hands and

  1954. heart in

  1955. Psalm 73

  1956. and in

  1957. this pagan

  1958. king.

  1959. Well,

  1960. there's one

  1961. hands and

  1962. heart passage

  1963. in the

  1964. New Testament

  1965. and it's

  1966. in James

    James 4 chapter mention

  1967. chapter 4

  1968. and I'll

  1969. just read

  1970. you the

  1971. key bit.

  1972. James

    James 4 chapter mention

  1973. chapter 4

  1974. at verse

  1975. 8.

  1976. Come

  1977. near to

  1978. God and

  1979. he will

  1980. come near

  1981. to you.

  1982. In a

  1983. sense,

  1984. that's our

  1985. psalm.

  1986. The

  1987. creator

  1988. king comes

  1989. to his

  1990. people.

  1991. Who are

  1992. the people

  1993. fit for

  1994. the creator

  1995. king?

  1996. Come

  1997. near to

  1998. God and

  1999. he will

  2000. come near

  2001. to you.

  2002. Wash

  2003. your hands,

  2004. you sinners.

  2005. Purify

  2006. your hearts,

  2007. you double

  2008. minded.

  2009. Grieve,

  2010. mourn,

  2011. and wail.

  2012. Change your

  2013. laughter to

  2014. mourning,

  2015. your joy to

  2016. gloom.

  2017. humble

  2018. yourselves

  2019. before the

  2020. Lord.

  2021. He will

  2022. lift you

  2023. up.

  2024. That's

  2025. Psalm 24

  2026. quite neatly.

  2027. Wash

  2028. your hands,

  2029. purify your

  2030. hearts,

  2031. and remember

  2032. that

  2033. Pastor James

  2034. is writing

  2035. to churches,

  2036. is writing

  2037. to Christians

  2038. with these

  2039. words.

  2040. And he's

  2041. elaborating

  2042. here on

  2043. how friendship

  2044. with the

  2045. world is

  2046. enmity

  2047. with God

  2048. in terms

  2049. that very

  2050. much resonate

  2051. with Psalm

  2052. 24.

  2053. So the

  2054. question of

  2055. Psalm 24

  2056. 3,

  2057. who may

  2058. ascend the

  2059. hill of

  2060. the Lord,

  2061. invites us

  2062. then to

  2063. test ourselves

  2064. what has

  2065. been my

  2066. response to

  2067. the creator

  2068. king?

  2069. Have I

  2070. responded to

  2071. the creator

  2072. king?

  2073. And because

  2074. this isn't

  2075. just a

  2076. me thing,

  2077. it's the

  2078. generation

  2079. of those

  2080. who seek

  2081. the Lord,

  2082. have we,

  2083. have we

  2084. responded

  2085. rightly to

  2086. the creator

  2087. king?

  2088. Which brings

  2089. me to

  2090. point 5.

  2091. So is

  2092. Jesus then

  2093. in this

  2094. psalm?

  2095. Well,

  2096. I think

  2097. he is.

  2098. Perhaps

  2099. not at

  2100. the point

  2101. where we

  2102. might first

  2103. have

  2104. thought.

  2105. The

  2106. God of

  2107. salvation

  2108. comes up

  2109. in verse

  2110. 5.

  2111. And again,

  2112. we didn't

  2113. pause at

  2114. every word.

  2115. You might

  2116. have felt

  2117. we did.

  2118. Who may

  2119. ascend the

  2120. hill of

  2121. the Lord?

  2122. This

  2123. person,

  2124. verse 4.

  2125. Verse 5,

  2126. he will

  2127. bear a

  2128. blessing from

  2129. the Lord

  2130. and vindication

  2131. from God,

  2132. his

  2133. savior.

  2134. savior.

  2135. Savior.

  2136. What is

  2137. there that

  2138. needs saving

  2139. here for

  2140. one who

  2141. is fit to

  2142. stand in

  2143. God's

  2144. presence?

  2145. Well,

  2146. as we

  2147. read these

  2148. with Christian

  2149. eyes,

  2150. we see

  2151. that Christ

  2152. is the

  2153. one in

  2154. whom all

  2155. God's

  2156. promises,

  2157. God's

  2158. covenant,

  2159. the arrangements

  2160. that God

  2161. made with

  2162. his people

  2163. Israel,

  2164. find their

  2165. yes in

  2166. Jesus.

  2167. It's

  2168. through

  2169. Jesus being

  2170. the victorious

  2171. king that

  2172. all God's

  2173. promises find

  2174. their yes.

  2175. How it

  2176. is that

  2177. divine

  2178. righteousness,

  2179. divine

  2180. blessing can

  2181. be ours from

  2182. the savior

  2183. God.

  2184. I think in

  2185. some ways

  2186. we're back

  2187. at this

  2188. morning's

  2189. sermon.

  2190. sermon for

  2191. those of

  2192. you who

  2193. were here.

  2194. Andy

  2195. Hunter was

  2196. speaking of

  2197. Jesus teaching

  2198. in Luke 11,

  2199. finished with

  2200. these words.

  2201. Blessed,

  2202. blessed,

  2203. are those who

  2204. hear the

  2205. word of

  2206. God and

  2207. keep it,

  2208. heed it,

  2209. attend to

  2210. it,

  2211. obey it.

  2212. the creator

  2213. king comes

  2214. for his

  2215. people.

  2216. Are his

  2217. people fit

  2218. for the

  2219. presence of

  2220. the creator

  2221. king?

  2222. Clearly,

  2223. then,

  2224. there's a

  2225. strong claim

  2226. on those

  2227. of us who

  2228. identify

  2229. ourselves as

  2230. God's

  2231. people and

  2232. who seek

  2233. to live as

  2234. those fit

  2235. for the

  2236. presence of

  2237. the creator

  2238. king.

  2239. So we

  2240. want to

  2241. ask

  2242. ourselves,

  2243. what do

  2244. my hands

  2245. do?

  2246. What

  2247. lengths do

  2248. they click?

  2249. What

  2250. beverages do

  2251. they reach

  2252. for?

  2253. How

  2254. readily do

  2255. they form

  2256. fists?

  2257. What does

  2258. my heart

  2259. seek?

  2260. To be a

  2261. voyeur,

  2262. do I want

  2263. to win

  2264. the argument?

  2265. Do I

  2266. simply want

  2267. to live

  2268. an untroubled

  2269. life?

  2270. Chill.

  2271. Do I

  2272. just want

  2273. to adore

  2274. my

  2275. personal

  2276. idols?

  2277. Pure

  2278. hands,

  2279. clean

  2280. heart,

  2281. do not

  2282. swear by

  2283. what is

  2284. false,

  2285. do not

  2286. lift up

  2287. your heart

  2288. to idols.

  2289. And this

  2290. is why

  2291. we live

  2292. repentant

  2293. lives.

  2294. As we

  2295. thought about

  2296. Wednesday

  2297. evening,

  2298. turning away

  2299. from the

  2300. sins of

  2301. our

  2302. thoughts

  2303. and words

  2304. and deeds,

  2305. turning to

  2306. our

  2307. savior king

  2308. in whose

  2309. life we

  2310. find our

  2311. lives.

  2312. lives.

  2313. And perhaps

  2314. this evening

  2315. as we

  2316. gather

  2317. together,

  2318. there are

  2319. some here

  2320. who don't

  2321. count

  2322. themselves

  2323. among the

  2324. people of

  2325. God.

  2326. Perhaps

  2327. not,

  2328. I'm not

  2329. a Christian

  2330. yet.

  2331. And perhaps

  2332. you look out

  2333. of your

  2334. eyes and

  2335. see a

  2336. world much

  2337. like the

  2338. psalmist

  2339. did,

  2340. even if

  2341. now we

  2342. see galaxies

  2343. and the

  2344. psalmists

  2345. are stars.

  2346. you know

  2347. that God

  2348. has made

  2349. this and

  2350. you know

  2351. God has

  2352. made you.

  2353. And so

  2354. the psalmist

  2355. is inviting

  2356. you to

  2357. be one

  2358. of the

  2359. generation

  2360. who seeks

  2361. the Lord,

  2362. to enjoy

  2363. the presence

  2364. of that

  2365. God by

  2366. being fit

  2367. to stand

  2368. in his

  2369. presence,

  2370. by turning

  2371. away from

  2372. sin,

  2373. seeking the

  2374. savior king

  2375. who made

  2376. it possible

  2377. for us

  2378. to live

  2379. a life

  2380. fitting

  2381. for this

  2382. creator king.

  2383. Join the

  2384. generation

  2385. of those

  2386. who seek

  2387. him.

  2388. Draw near

  2389. to him.

  2390. He will

  2391. draw near

  2392. to you.

  2393. Let's

  2394. pray.

  2395. The

  2396. earth is

  2397. the Lord's.

  2398. We

  2399. are yours,

  2400. O Lord.

  2401. And we

  2402. pray tonight

  2403. as we

  2404. ponder

  2405. the world

  2406. you have

  2407. made

  2408. and the

  2409. life you

  2410. have called

  2411. us to

  2412. live in

  2413. this world

  2414. and with

  2415. each other,

  2416. that by

  2417. your grace

  2418. and through

  2419. the work

  2420. of your

  2421. son,

  2422. Jesus

  2423. Christ,

  2424. you would

  2425. fit us

  2426. to be

  2427. the people

  2428. who stand

  2429. in your

  2430. holy place

  2431. for your

  2432. glory's

  2433. sake.

  2434. Amen.
