  1. Thanks very much, Neil. Good afternoon, everyone. Great to have you with us today.

  2. If you were here last week, you'll remember that we were listening to some pretty challenging words

  3. that the Lord Jesus said to the Pharisees, lots of woes as he went through.

  4. This morning, we're in the same kind of area, just fairly shortly afterwards,

  5. and the Lord Jesus is again saying some very challenging words, but this time it's to his disciples.

  6. So the audience is different, and the emphasis is a bit different as well.

  7. Because alongside the challenge, as Neil helpfully pointed out, there is encouragement

  8. and the knowledge that whatever difficult times we go through, that God is with us if we really fear him.

  9. So let's read together from Luke chapter 12. We're going to read the first 12 verses.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  10. Luke chapter 12, reading from verse 1.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  11. Here's what it says.

  12. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so they were trampling on one another,

  13. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying,

  14. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  15. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

  16. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight,

  17. and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

  18. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that can do no more.

  19. But I will show you whom you should fear.

  20. Fear him, who after the killing of the body has power to throw you into hell.

  21. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

  22. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?

  23. Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

  24. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

  25. Don't be afraid.

  26. You are worth more than many sparrows.

  27. I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.

  28. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.

  29. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.

  30. But anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  31. When you are brought before synagogue through as an authorities,

  32. do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say.

  33. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.

  34. And pray that God will help us to understand his word and to apply it to our hearts today.

  35. I was 13 years old when Arthur Blessett came to Edinburgh.

  36. Arthur Blessett is an American evangelist.

  37. He's best known because he goes everywhere carrying a cross.

  38. He's in the Guinness Book of Records.

  39. He's been to 324 countries and territories around the world.

  40. And everywhere he goes, he has a cross with him.

  41. There he is in Edinburgh with it many years ago.

  42. Arthur Blessett first came to Edinburgh in 1971.

  43. He preached his first sermon at the foot of the mound to an audience of two.

  44. There was Ian Leach, a well-known evangelist in the city,

  45. and a teenage girl who he'd met when she was running away from home.

  46. I heard him a year later.

  47. And he came back.

  48. And by that time, he was really well-known in Edinburgh.

  49. And I can well remember standing outside a city centre church

  50. in a crowd that may well have numbered thousands,

  51. certainly a huge number of people, mostly young people.

  52. And there was a real, real excitement and buzz about it.

  53. At one point, a window upstairs in the church opened.

  54. Arthur Blessett poked his head out and waved to us.

  55. And everyone went absolutely mad.

  56. And I thought of this at the beginning of the week,

  57. as I read the beginning of this passage,

  58. where it talks about the crowd of many thousands who had gathered,

  59. so they were trampling on one another.

  60. That's the only crowd of that kind of sort

  61. that I can ever remember being in

  62. and experiencing the excitement of.

  63. Then we had the bomb in Manchester on Monday.

  64. And I thought about another crowd,

  65. a crowd of young people, mainly.

  66. And they were probably falling over themselves

  67. as they tried to escape.

  68. And what was there in their minds

  69. was not excitement at that point.

  70. It was fear, it was terror

  71. about what was going to happen to them.

  72. A very different kind of crowd

  73. and a very different kind of response.

  74. And I thought, as I thought about the disciples

  75. in this passage,

  76. they may have had both of these emotions

  77. as they saw the crowd there.

  78. There was excitement.

  79. The people were excited about Jesus.

  80. Now, when we think about this crowd,

  81. we have to remember Jesus is no longer

  82. on the hills and plains of Galilee,

  83. preaching in the open air to lots of people.

  84. He's moved to Judea

  85. and he's in the streets of the city.

  86. And still there's a huge crowd,

  87. a different crowd.

  88. Still there's a huge crowd with him.

  89. And they're listening to him

  90. and they're engaged by what he has to say

  91. because what he has to say

  92. is radically different.

  93. And for them it's quite exciting

  94. as he tears into the religious leaders

  95. and exposes their hypocrisy.

  96. And I could see the disciples

  97. being really excited

  98. that the message that they were bringing

  99. and that they were giving,

  100. that the Lord Jesus was giving to the people,

  101. was hitting home

  102. and it was attracting so many to him.

  103. But alongside that,

  104. as we thought about last week,

  105. there were the religious leaders

  106. and they were so upset

  107. by what the Lord Jesus was doing

  108. that they were really out to get him

  109. and potentially anyone who followed him.

  110. And so the disciples may well have been feeling,

  111. yes, this is in one way,

  112. it's very exciting,

  113. but in another way,

  114. actually, this is pretty dangerous for us.

  115. It's quite possible

  116. that we could go through times of persecution,

  117. that we could be dragged before the judges

  118. and religious courts

  119. because we are followers of Jesus.

  120. And so Jesus, in this passage,

  121. he is trying both to challenge the disciples,

  122. not to get too excited

  123. and to get dragged into some of the things

  124. that would feature in the Pharisees

  125. and others in this world.

  126. He is also trying to encourage them

  127. and to say, be brave.

  128. Think of the things that really matter

  129. and don't get caught up in things

  130. which ultimately,

  131. although they're important,

  132. although they're difficult,

  133. although they would naturally make you afraid,

  134. ultimately, they're not the things

  135. that are really important.

  136. And I think he really,

  137. in the first verse,

  138. he brings out what is going to be

  139. the key message of the whole passage

  140. when he says,

  141. be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,

  142. which is hypocrisy.

  143. The Lord Jesus is very aware

  144. that the religious establishment of his day,

  145. although they appeared good,

  146. although they appeared to be living lives

  147. that some would say,

  148. well, they're lives that are obedient to God.

  149. They try to obey all the things in the law

  150. going beyond what the Old Testament

  151. would have to their own laws.

  152. They appeared to be good,

  153. but actually they were hypocrites.

  154. A hypocrite is someone who wears a mask,

  155. someone who's something in one place

  156. and something totally different somewhere else.

  157. So the Pharisees in public,

  158. they were religious,

  159. they were holy people,

  160. they liked your parade,

  161. their goodness before others.

  162. In private,

  163. their hearts and their minds,

  164. their attitudes and their actions

  165. as well were wrong.

  166. They were wearing a mask

  167. and what you saw

  168. was not necessarily what they really were.

  169. And Jesus said,

  170. even for my true followers,

  171. for my disciples,

  172. there is the danger

  173. that we could get into that as well.

  174. A picture of yeast

  175. is in bread making,

  176. obviously.

  177. It's the yeast that is used in the bread

  178. to raise it

  179. and the bacteria of the yeast

  180. go throughout the whole dough.

  181. Everything gets infected by it

  182. in the words of Jesus.

  183. And Jesus says,

  184. if you're not very careful

  185. the kind of attitudes

  186. the Pharisees and others have,

  187. they could infect you

  188. and you could become like them,

  189. you could become hypocrites.

  190. The real challenge for us,

  191. I think,

  192. is what I am on a Sunday

  193. in church.

  194. What I am when I go home

  195. or what I am when I go into work tomorrow

  196. or when I go to my sports club

  197. or to the other situations

  198. I have during the week.

  199. Jesus says, I think,

  200. four things

  201. as we go down through the passage

  202. and I've used words

  203. that look quite similar

  204. to try and help us

  205. to remember them.

  206. Four key things

  207. that he says

  208. as he goes through.

  209. And the first thing he says

  210. is there is something

  211. unforeseen

  212. that is going to happen.

  213. The Pharisees,

  214. the religious leaders,

  215. hypocrites down through the ages,

  216. they think,

  217. I'm okay,

  218. I can keep up

  219. my outward appearance,

  220. I can make everyone think

  221. that I'm good

  222. and I'm living

  223. a life for God

  224. and what I do

  225. behind the scenes,

  226. what I do

  227. in the privacy

  228. of my own home,

  229. nobody really knows about.

  230. And Jesus says,

  231. hypocrites

  232. will be exposed.

  233. The picture he uses here

  234. is of a typical Jewish house.

  235. So a typical Jewish house

  236. wouldn't be built

  237. with bricks and mortar

  238. the way ours are,

  239. be built with clay

  240. and it wouldn't

  241. in many senses

  242. be that secure

  243. on the outside.

  244. It wouldn't be that difficult

  245. if someone was really determined

  246. to break in

  247. to get through

  248. that outer wall

  249. and to take something

  250. maybe even when

  251. the household

  252. was sleeping.

  253. So what they used to do

  254. was they would have

  255. a room right in the middle

  256. of the house.

  257. A room with no

  258. external walls

  259. or windows.

  260. And that was the most

  261. private place

  262. in the house.

  263. It was where you'd keep

  264. your most valuable things.

  265. It's where they were safest.

  266. And it's where if you wanted

  267. to have a really

  268. confidential conversation,

  269. you might go

  270. because no one

  271. outside the house

  272. could hear it.

  273. You are protected

  274. from everything.

  275. So Jesus says,

  276. it's a bit like

  277. going into that dark room.

  278. That room with no windows

  279. waiting.

  280. Nothing can be seen

  281. or nothing can be heard.

  282. It's a bit like that.

  283. That you are trying

  284. to hide what you really are.

  285. And yet,

  286. what you have said

  287. in that dark room,

  288. it will be seen

  289. in the daylight

  290. and it will be proclaimed,

  291. he says,

  292. from the rooftops.

  293. Now exactly what

  294. or when

  295. the Lord Jesus means

  296. it will be proclaimed

  297. isn't entirely clear.

  298. Sometimes hypocrisy

  299. is exposed

  300. in this world

  301. and the hypocrite

  302. is held up

  303. as someone

  304. who really hasn't

  305. been doing

  306. what they should have been.

  307. Perhaps sometimes

  308. we'll never be found out

  309. if there's hypocrisy

  310. but God knows

  311. and God sees

  312. and what we have done

  313. in the hidden place

  314. it will be seen

  315. in public.

  316. Now that needn't necessarily

  317. just be something

  318. to challenge us.

  319. It's something also

  320. I think that can be

  321. an encouragement.

  322. Because I'm aware

  323. of many Christians,

  324. Christians in this church

  325. and one I'm not aware of,

  326. who the work they do

  327. for Jesus

  328. and the prayers

  329. that they bring

  330. before him

  331. and the encouragement

  332. that they give

  333. to others

  334. is unseen.

  335. Most of us

  336. know nothing

  337. about it

  338. and yet we can be sure

  339. that God knows

  340. and that God

  341. will reward

  342. appropriately.

  343. The things that we have done

  344. in the hidden place,

  345. God will,

  346. Christ will give us,

  347. a credit

  348. will give us reward

  349. for in public

  350. because we have been

  351. faithful servants.

  352. So there is a challenge here.

  353. There is also,

  354. I think,

  355. an encouragement

  356. for us.

  357. But a real warning

  358. against hypocrisy.

  359. So there is something,

  360. says Jesus,

  361. unforeseen

  362. that is going to happen.

  363. Jesus then says

  364. there is something

  365. that is

  366. unforgotten.

  367. And he is thinking

  368. now of the fact

  369. that he

  370. and his disciples

  371. are going to go

  372. through times

  373. of persecution.

  374. And as the disciples

  375. are looking around,

  376. they may quite

  377. legitimately

  378. be afraid

  379. as they see

  380. the way things

  381. are going

  382. and the treatment

  383. that they are getting

  384. from the religious leaders.

  385. And Jesus says

  386. it is natural

  387. to be afraid.

  388. It is human

  389. to be afraid.

  390. that actually

  391. you don't really

  392. need to fear

  393. what man

  394. might do to you.

  395. What's really important

  396. is not the worst

  397. that men can do

  398. that you can imagine.

  399. What's really important

  400. is that you are

  401. right before God

  402. and that when you

  403. stand before him

  404. you can stand there

  405. with the assurance

  406. that your sins

  407. are forgiven

  408. and that you are

  409. not going to be

  410. condemned.

  411. Men can kill

  412. the body,

  413. says the Lord Jesus.

  414. The one we should

  415. really fear,

  416. the one we should

  417. really respect

  418. is the one

  419. who ultimately

  420. is going to be

  421. the judge

  422. of our souls

  423. and who is going

  424. to judge us

  425. on what we have

  426. done with the Lord Jesus.

  427. Have we taken him

  428. as our saviour

  429. or have we

  430. rejected him?

  431. And again,

  432. along with the challenge

  433. there is

  434. an encouragement.

  435. Two examples

  436. the Lord Jesus gives

  437. which are illustrated

  438. in the pictures here.

  439. the sparrow.

  440. The sparrow

  441. was a very basic

  442. foodstuff

  443. in Jesus' day.

  444. If you wanted

  445. cheap meat

  446. you could go along

  447. to the market

  448. and buy sparrow.

  449. And the normal price

  450. for sparrow

  451. was two a penny.

  452. That's referred to

  453. elsewhere

  454. in the New Testament.

  455. Sparrows were sold

  456. for two a penny.

  457. But a bit like

  458. some of the offers

  459. that you get

  460. in supermarkets today

  461. if you decided

  462. to buy four sparrows

  463. they throw another one

  464. in for nothing.

  465. So you get

  466. two sparrows

  467. for a penny

  468. or you get

  469. four sparrows

  470. for tuppence.

  471. Not literally pennies

  472. in our terms

  473. and probably

  474. about an hour's wages

  475. would be equivalent

  476. to what we called

  477. a penny.

  478. And that fifth sparrow

  479. you might think

  480. was utterly worthless.

  481. It's something

  482. that can just be

  483. thrown in as an extra

  484. that costs the vendor

  485. almost nothing

  486. and is almost

  487. just a kind of

  488. goodwill gesture

  489. to you.

  490. But Jesus says

  491. God knows

  492. and God cares

  493. for that sparrow.

  494. When he says

  495. think about the hairs

  496. in your head

  497. can you count the hairs

  498. in your head?

  499. No of course you can't.

  500. Even those of us

  501. who are losing the hair

  502. on our head

  503. we still can't

  504. begin to count

  505. how many hairs

  506. we've got.

  507. But yes

  508. says Jesus

  509. God has

  510. even your hairs

  511. numbered.

  512. That's how much

  513. he cares

  514. about you.

  515. And don't think

  516. that if things

  517. get difficult

  518. in this world

  519. if it seems

  520. that the going

  521. is hard

  522. and you're

  523. struggling with it

  524. don't think

  525. in any sense

  526. that God

  527. has forgotten

  528. about you.

  529. God cares

  530. about the sparrow

  531. cares even

  532. about the number

  533. of hairs

  534. on your head.

  535. How much more

  536. does he care

  537. for you

  538. if you are

  539. seeking to follow

  540. him

  541. and to live

  542. for him

  543. and because of

  544. that you get

  545. into a time

  546. of difficulty.

  547. God loves

  548. you.

  549. You are of

  550. great value

  551. to him.

  552. And if you are

  553. trusting in him

  554. you can rely

  555. on him

  556. absolutely.

  557. It's really

  558. coming back

  559. to what Peter

  560. was saying

  561. isn't it

  562. in the children's

  563. talk.

  564. We can rely

  565. on God

  566. we know

  567. he won't

  568. forget us

  569. we know

  570. he won't

  571. abandon us

  572. even in the

  573. time of trial

  574. the time

  575. of difficulty

  576. he'll be

  577. there with

  578. us.

  579. And even

  580. if the worst

  581. happens

  582. and very

  583. unlikely

  584. in this

  585. country

  586. even if

  587. the worst

  588. happens

  589. and someone

  590. is martyred

  591. for their

  592. faith

  593. they can

  594. have the

  595. confidence

  596. that their

  597. soul is

  598. secure

  599. that they

  600. will get

  601. the reward

  602. from the

  603. one who

  604. truly judges

  605. and the

  606. only one

  607. whom we

  608. should

  609. really

  610. fear.

  611. We are

  612. unforgotten.

  613. Third word

  614. is unforgiven

  615. and this

  616. is the

  617. most difficult

  618. and perhaps

  619. the most

  620. solemn

  621. part

  622. of our

  623. passage.

  624. Look at

  625. half a dozen

  626. commentaries

  627. you get

  628. at least

  629. half a dozen

  630. different

  631. answers

  632. for exactly

  633. what it

  634. means.

  635. But this

  636. is something

  637. that a lot

  638. of Christians

  639. have found

  640. really difficult

  641. and a real

  642. struggle with.

  643. Some of the

  644. older folks

  645. here will be

  646. aware of a

  647. book written

  648. by a man

  649. called Edwin

  650. Goss

  651. which is

  652. called

  653. Father and

  654. Son.

  655. It's actually

  656. still in print

  657. but I suspect

  658. not so much

  659. read by younger

  660. people these

  661. days.

  662. Edwin Goss

  663. grew up

  664. as his

  665. mother died

  666. fairly early

  667. he was brought

  668. up by his

  669. father who

  670. was a

  671. brilliant

  672. academic

  673. a very

  674. devout

  675. Christian

  676. but very

  677. very strict

  678. with his

  679. children.

  680. And Goss's

  681. book is

  682. essentially

  683. about that

  684. with I

  685. think a

  686. little bit

  687. of exaggeration

  688. in places.

  689. One of the

  690. characters that

  691. Edwin Goss

  692. presents to

  693. us is a

  694. man called

  695. Mr.

  696. Padgett.

  697. And Mr.

  698. Padgett is

  699. utterly convinced

  700. that he's

  701. committed

  702. the

  703. unforgivable

  704. sin.

  705. Now no one

  706. actually knows

  707. what sin it is

  708. he thinks he's

  709. committed.

  710. He never

  711. tells anybody

  712. but he goes

  713. around saying

  714. I've committed

  715. the unforgivable

  716. sin.

  717. My soul

  718. is utterly

  719. damned.

  720. And sadly

  721. he's not alone.

  722. There have been

  723. a lot of people

  724. who have felt

  725. I've committed

  726. the unforgivable

  727. sin.

  728. There's no way

  729. that God

  730. can forgive me

  731. for what

  732. I've done.

  733. Well can I

  734. say this

  735. this kind

  736. of God

  737. is not

  738. the God

  739. I know.

  740. The God

  741. I know

  742. is best

  743. characterized

  744. in the parable

  745. of the

  746. prodigal son.

  747. This son

  748. who says

  749. effectively

  750. to his

  751. father

  752. I don't

  753. want you

  754. I want

  755. your money.

  756. He takes

  757. his money

  758. and he

  759. goes away

  760. and he

  761. wastes it

  762. on wild

  763. living

  764. and at the

  765. end when he's

  766. right down

  767. to his last

  768. penny or beyond

  769. that

  770. he decides

  771. he'll have

  772. to go back

  773. to his

  774. father

  775. expecting

  776. nothing.

  777. Expecting at

  778. best that his

  779. father might

  780. take him in

  781. as a servant.

  782. What happens?

  783. As he's

  784. coming his

  785. father rushes

  786. out

  787. flings his

  788. arm around

  789. him and

  790. throws a

  791. huge party

  792. to welcome

  793. him back.

  794. The father

  795. is not

  796. looking for

  797. reasons to

  798. condemn

  799. his son.

  800. He's looking

  801. for opportunities

  802. to show

  803. his love

  804. and his

  805. forgiveness

  806. to the

  807. one who's

  808. done him

  809. wrong.

  810. That's my

  811. God.

  812. That's my

  813. father.

  814. That is the

  815. one I know

  816. and many

  817. others here

  818. know.

  819. Not someone

  820. who wants

  821. to condemn

  822. and to

  823. punish us

  824. for our

  825. sins but

  826. who wants

  827. us to

  828. accept the

  829. offer of

  830. salvation he

  831. has given

  832. us who

  833. sent his

  834. son to

  835. die on

  836. the cross

  837. for us

  838. so that

  839. everyone who

  840. trusts in

  841. him can be

  842. forgiven for

  843. the sins

  844. they have

  845. done.

  846. And verses

  847. like this

  848. must be

  849. read in

  850. the context

  851. of that

  852. understanding.

  853. We mustn't

  854. look at them

  855. in isolation

  856. and worry

  857. about them.

  858. Quite often

  859. the comments

  860. of quite a

  861. few of them

  862. have read

  863. said if

  864. you're worried

  865. about having

  866. committed the

  867. unforgivable

  868. sin you

  869. haven't.

  870. Because if

  871. you had

  872. committed it

  873. you wouldn't

  874. be worried

  875. about it.

  876. So what is

  877. the Lord

  878. Jesus talking

  879. about?

  880. Well let's

  881. look at it a

  882. bit more in

  883. the context

  884. of the

  885. passage.

  886. Because in

  887. verse 8

  888. and verse

  889. 9 he's

  890. talking about

  891. people who

  892. own him

  893. acknowledge

  894. him or

  895. who disown

  896. him before

  897. others.

  898. Of those

  899. who are

  900. willing to

  901. stand up

  902. and say

  903. I belong

  904. to Jesus

  905. I know

  906. him I

  907. love him

  908. and of

  909. those if

  910. they do

  911. know him

  912. who would

  913. not want

  914. anyone else

  915. to know

  916. who would

  917. keep it

  918. a secret

  919. and would

  920. worry about

  921. other people

  922. finding out.

  923. And Jesus

  924. says as he

  925. said earlier

  926. when he's

  927. talking about

  928. hypocrisy

  929. there is a

  930. reckoning

  931. in these

  932. things.

  933. Now it's

  934. not that if

  935. we are truly

  936. trusting in

  937. the Lord

  938. Jesus and

  939. we don't

  940. tell others

  941. about it

  942. that we

  943. lose our

  944. salvation

  945. through that.

  946. The scripture

  947. is very

  948. clear that's

  949. not the

  950. case and

  951. you only

  952. have to

  953. look at

  954. Peter and

  955. the way he

  956. denied the

  957. Lord Jesus

  958. and got

  959. forgiveness

  960. to understand

  961. that.

  962. But Jesus

  963. said it is

  964. really important

  965. that you

  966. don't try

  967. to pretend

  968. that you

  969. don't belong

  970. to me

  971. if you

  972. really do.

  973. And again

  974. I think

  975. that's going

  976. a bit beyond

  977. just not

  978. saying things

  979. to our

  980. friends or

  981. colleagues.

  982. We really

  983. should be

  984. witnessing

  985. about our

  986. love of the

  987. Lord Jesus

  988. and all he's

  989. done for us.

  990. But if we

  991. keep quiet

  992. don't say

  993. anything

  994. I don't

  995. think that

  996. is especially

  997. what the

  998. Lord Jesus

  999. is talking

  1000. about here

  1001. but it is

  1002. more saying

  1003. I don't

  1004. know him

  1005. and I don't

  1006. want anything

  1007. to do with

  1008. him in the

  1009. kind of way

  1010. that Peter

  1011. did.

  1012. So Lord

  1013. Jesus says

  1014. in these

  1015. kind of

  1016. situations

  1017. there is

  1018. a reckoning

  1019. it will

  1020. be taken

  1021. into account

  1022. if we are

  1023. truly believing

  1024. in the

  1025. Lord Jesus

  1026. it doesn't

  1027. mean we're

  1028. not saved

  1029. and don't

  1030. belong to

  1031. him though.

  1032. He then

  1033. says verse

  1034. 10

  1035. everyone who

  1036. speaks a

  1037. word against

  1038. the son

  1039. of man

  1040. will be

  1041. forgiven.

  1042. Now the

  1043. son of man

  1044. is Jesus

  1045. I think

  1046. it's fairly

  1047. clear from

  1048. the way

  1049. he talks

  1050. about it

  1051. through the

  1052. gospels

  1053. that he

  1054. is talking

  1055. about himself

  1056. here.

  1057. He says

  1058. even those

  1059. who speak

  1060. against me

  1061. and who

  1062. condemn me

  1063. there is

  1064. the possibility

  1065. of forgiveness.

  1066. Example of

  1067. that the

  1068. apostle Paul

  1069. Saul of

  1070. Tarsus

  1071. Saul who

  1072. was so

  1073. instrumental in

  1074. the stoning

  1075. of Stephen

  1076. and who

  1077. was going

  1078. around saying

  1079. really terrible

  1080. things about

  1081. the Lord

  1082. Jesus and

  1083. about Christians

  1084. and seeking to

  1085. persecute them

  1086. and Jesus

  1087. meets him on the

  1088. Damascus road

  1089. and his life

  1090. is turned

  1091. round.

  1092. very clearly

  1093. what Paul

  1094. had been

  1095. doing

  1096. wasn't

  1097. unforgivable.

  1098. It was

  1099. terrible

  1100. that he

  1101. was

  1102. persecuting

  1103. the

  1104. Christians

  1105. it wasn't

  1106. unforgivable.

  1107. Jesus

  1108. says

  1109. that can

  1110. be

  1111. forgiven.

  1112. But he

  1113. says

  1114. whoever

  1115. blasphemes

  1116. against the

  1117. Holy Spirit

  1118. will not

  1119. be forgiven.

  1120. Now let's

  1121. get to the

  1122. number of it.

  1123. What does

  1124. that mean?

  1125. Two things

  1126. which I think

  1127. I found

  1128. reasonably

  1129. persuasive

  1130. in what

  1131. I've looked

  1132. at

  1133. about

  1134. this.

  1135. In the

  1136. other

  1137. Gospels

  1138. where the

  1139. Lord

  1140. Jesus

  1141. says

  1142. a similar

  1143. kind

  1144. of

  1145. thing

  1146. is in

  1147. the

  1148. context

  1149. of people

  1150. looking at

  1151. him

  1152. and looking

  1153. at all

  1154. he's done

  1155. through the

  1156. power of

  1157. the Holy

  1158. Spirit

  1159. and saying

  1160. that's the

  1161. work of

  1162. the devil.

  1163. That's not

  1164. God's work

  1165. that's the

  1166. devil's work.

  1167. And Jesus

  1168. may be saying

  1169. if someone

  1170. gets to that

  1171. kind of stage

  1172. where they

  1173. see goodness

  1174. and they

  1175. see God

  1176. at work

  1177. helping

  1178. people

  1179. healing

  1180. them

  1181. teaching

  1182. them

  1183. doing

  1184. everything

  1185. that is

  1186. good

  1187. and they

  1188. say

  1189. that's

  1190. from

  1191. the

  1192. devil

  1193. then

  1194. they're

  1195. never

  1196. going

  1197. to

  1198. be

  1199. able

  1200. to

  1201. change

  1202. in

  1203. their

  1204. attitude.

  1205. So that's

  1206. one possible

  1207. interpretation.

  1208. The other

  1209. which I think

  1210. I find

  1211. probably the

  1212. most persuasive

  1213. is that the

  1214. work of the

  1215. Holy Spirit

  1216. is to lead

  1217. people to

  1218. Jesus.

  1219. And when

  1220. we hear

  1221. God's word

  1222. or when we

  1223. read from

  1224. the Bible

  1225. it is the

  1226. Holy Spirit

  1227. who works

  1228. in our

  1229. hearts

  1230. who

  1231. convicts

  1232. us that

  1233. we are

  1234. sinners

  1235. that we

  1236. need

  1237. God's

  1238. help

  1239. and that

  1240. we need

  1241. to come

  1242. to trust

  1243. and to

  1244. follow

  1245. Jesus

  1246. and who

  1247. leads us

  1248. to him.

  1249. And if

  1250. the Holy Spirit

  1251. again and

  1252. again convicts

  1253. us of this

  1254. and seeks to

  1255. bring our

  1256. sins before

  1257. us

  1258. and we

  1259. say no

  1260. I'm not

  1261. interested

  1262. I don't

  1263. need

  1264. Jesus

  1265. I'm not

  1266. a sinner

  1267. then there

  1268. comes a

  1269. point

  1270. when we're

  1271. no longer

  1272. in this

  1273. world

  1274. when we

  1275. said I

  1276. don't

  1277. need

  1278. Jesus

  1279. and we've

  1280. rejected

  1281. the work

  1282. of the

  1283. Holy Spirit

  1284. seeking to

  1285. lead us

  1286. to him

  1287. there is

  1288. then no

  1289. way of

  1290. escape

  1291. from that.

  1292. If we

  1293. persistently

  1294. don't allow

  1295. the Spirit

  1296. to speak

  1297. to us

  1298. and to

  1299. lead us

  1300. to Christ

  1301. then perhaps

  1302. that is what

  1303. the Lord

  1304. Jesus calls

  1305. blasphemy

  1306. against

  1307. the Spirit.

  1308. Now please

  1309. don't take

  1310. that away

  1311. being the

  1312. thing that

  1313. you really

  1314. remember of

  1315. what I've

  1316. said today.

  1317. I think it's

  1318. important that

  1319. we try to

  1320. understand these

  1321. verses but

  1322. there are

  1323. other things

  1324. which from

  1325. a practical

  1326. day-to-day

  1327. viewpoint I

  1328. think are

  1329. much more

  1330. important to

  1331. us.

  1332. One more

  1333. thing the

  1334. last couple

  1335. of verses

  1336. of the

  1337. chapter.

  1338. And again

  1339. Jesus is

  1340. talking to

  1341. his disciples

  1342. and he's

  1343. thinking about

  1344. the fact

  1345. there's going

  1346. to be

  1347. difficulties

  1348. for them.

  1349. And he

  1350. says you

  1351. will be

  1352. unforsaken.

  1353. In other

  1354. words when

  1355. you come

  1356. to the

  1357. point of

  1358. trial,

  1359. when you're

  1360. up before

  1361. the Sanhedrin

  1362. or the

  1363. secular judges

  1364. of this

  1365. world and

  1366. they're trying

  1367. to condemn

  1368. you because

  1369. you're a

  1370. Christian and

  1371. because you're

  1372. following me,

  1373. you will not

  1374. be on your

  1375. own.

  1376. Don't worry

  1377. that you're

  1378. going to have

  1379. to stand in

  1380. front of

  1381. these judges

  1382. and you can't

  1383. think what to

  1384. say and you're

  1385. terrified because

  1386. the Holy Spirit

  1387. will be with

  1388. you.

  1389. And the Holy

  1390. Spirit will give

  1391. you the words

  1392. that you

  1393. need.

  1394. And that's the

  1395. context of

  1396. these verses.

  1397. This verse

  1398. is sometimes

  1399. or has been

  1400. used in the

  1401. past as an

  1402. excuse for

  1403. lazy preachers

  1404. not to prepare

  1405. their sermons

  1406. and to say

  1407. well God

  1408. will tell me

  1409. what to say

  1410. when I get

  1411. there.

  1412. That is not

  1413. what it's

  1414. about.

  1415. Nor is it

  1416. an excuse

  1417. for any of

  1418. us not to

  1419. read the

  1420. Bible and

  1421. try to

  1422. understand and

  1423. remember what

  1424. it says.

  1425. When we

  1426. come to the

  1427. point of

  1428. difficulty,

  1429. our understanding,

  1430. our memory of

  1431. scripture is

  1432. absolutely vital.

  1433. Remember the

  1434. Lord Jesus and

  1435. his temptation

  1436. again and

  1437. again he

  1438. repeated the

  1439. words of

  1440. scripture.

  1441. So let's

  1442. not get lazy

  1443. and think I

  1444. don't need to

  1445. read the

  1446. Bible because

  1447. God will

  1448. show me at

  1449. each stage

  1450. what I

  1451. need to

  1452. do.

  1453. But when

  1454. we're in

  1455. the heat

  1456. of the

  1457. moment,

  1458. when everything

  1459. is against

  1460. us and in

  1461. this case when

  1462. the people

  1463. were on

  1464. trial,

  1465. the disciples

  1466. were on

  1467. trial,

  1468. Jesus says

  1469. don't worry,

  1470. don't fail you

  1471. on your own

  1472. because you

  1473. will never be

  1474. forsaken,

  1475. my Holy

  1476. Spirit will

  1477. be there

  1478. with you.

  1479. Those of

  1480. us who

  1481. were at

  1482. the prayer

  1483. meeting on

  1484. Thursday,

  1485. were thinking

  1486. of some

  1487. verses in

  1488. John 15

  1489. which in

  1490. many ways

  1491. are a

  1492. parallel to

  1493. this.

  1494. Jesus is

  1495. talking to

  1496. the disciples

  1497. about the

  1498. trials and

  1499. the persecution

  1500. that they'll

  1501. face.

  1502. And he

  1503. says that

  1504. when the

  1505. advocate,

  1506. that's the

  1507. Holy Spirit

  1508. comes,

  1509. whom I will

  1510. send to you

  1511. from the

  1512. Father,

  1513. the Spirit of

  1514. truth who

  1515. goes out from

  1516. the Father,

  1517. he will

  1518. testify about

  1519. me,

  1520. and you

  1521. also must

  1522. testify for

  1523. you have

  1524. been with

  1525. me from

  1526. the beginning.

  1527. You must

  1528. testify,

  1529. we are

  1530. God's

  1531. mouthpieces

  1532. in this

  1533. earth,

  1534. that is

  1535. what we

  1536. are here

  1537. to do,

  1538. to tell

  1539. others about

  1540. the Lord

  1541. Jesus.

  1542. But we're

  1543. not doing

  1544. it on our

  1545. own,

  1546. we're doing

  1547. it through

  1548. the power

  1549. of the

  1550. Holy Spirit

  1551. and he

  1552. ultimately

  1553. is the

  1554. one who

  1555. gives us

  1556. the words

  1557. to say

  1558. even when

  1559. we feel

  1560. weak and

  1561. inadequate

  1562. and perhaps

  1563. when we

  1564. feel under

  1565. a great

  1566. deal of

  1567. pressure,

  1568. we can

  1569. trust in

  1570. him because

  1571. he is

  1572. there to

  1573. help us

  1574. and to

  1575. give us

  1576. courage and

  1577. to give us

  1578. the right

  1579. words.

  1580. So a

  1581. difficult

  1582. passion,

  1583. undoubtedly

  1584. a difficult

  1585. passion,

  1586. I haven't

  1587. tried to

  1588. cover in

  1589. any detail

  1590. all the

  1591. difficult

  1592. interpretations

  1593. within it.

  1594. But let's

  1595. take away

  1596. from it

  1597. just one

  1598. key thing.

  1599. and that

  1600. key thing

  1601. is that

  1602. what really

  1603. really matters

  1604. is my

  1605. relationship

  1606. with God

  1607. not what

  1608. other people

  1609. think about

  1610. me.

  1611. We shouldn't

  1612. be going

  1613. around all

  1614. the time

  1615. looking over

  1616. our shoulders

  1617. and thinking

  1618. well we need

  1619. to look good

  1620. before others,

  1621. I need to

  1622. avoid getting

  1623. into trouble

  1624. in this world,

  1625. I need to

  1626. keep an

  1627. appearance up,

  1628. keep the

  1629. mask up

  1630. if you

  1631. like.

  1632. What really

  1633. matters says

  1634. Jesus is

  1635. how you

  1636. are before

  1637. God.

  1638. You might

  1639. appear totally

  1640. insignificant and

  1641. forgotten in

  1642. this world,

  1643. but God

  1644. values you

  1645. and God

  1646. sees what

  1647. you do

  1648. and what

  1649. is in

  1650. your heart.

  1651. You may

  1652. face times

  1653. of trial

  1654. and of

  1655. persecution

  1656. and of

  1657. trouble

  1658. in this

  1659. world,

  1660. but God

  1661. is there

  1662. with you

  1663. and God

  1664. will make

  1665. sure that

  1666. you are

  1667. rewarded

  1668. for your

  1669. faithfulness

  1670. to him.

  1671. Let's just

  1672. make sure

  1673. that we

  1674. know God

  1675. as our

  1676. loving

  1677. heavenly

  1678. father,

  1679. that we

  1680. know him

  1681. as the

  1682. one who

  1683. wants to

  1684. have a

  1685. living

  1686. relationship

  1687. with us

  1688. and if

  1689. we have

  1690. sinned,

  1691. if we have

  1692. done things

  1693. that we

  1694. think are

  1695. absolutely

  1696. terrible,

  1697. is still

  1698. willing to

  1699. forgive

  1700. and to

  1701. see us

  1702. restored to

  1703. him.

  1704. And if

  1705. we're in

  1706. that position,

  1707. let's be

  1708. bold and

  1709. let's be

  1710. willing to

  1711. go and

  1712. to talk to

  1713. others about

  1714. him and

  1715. not to

  1716. be ashamed

  1717. of our

  1718. Lord Jesus,

  1719. but to

  1720. present him

  1721. before men

  1722. and to

  1723. recognize

  1724. whatever

  1725. happens,

  1726. whatever the

  1727. response is,

  1728. he will be

  1729. with us

  1730. and will

  1731. help us.

  1732. Let's pray

  1733. together.

  1734. Father, we

  1735. thank you for

  1736. your word.

  1737. We thank you

  1738. for these

  1739. verses which

  1740. are difficult

  1741. to understand

  1742. and yet

  1743. which present

  1744. to us

  1745. great

  1746. encouragement

  1747. as well.

  1748. we thank

  1749. you that

  1750. we are

  1751. so valued

  1752. by you,

  1753. that you

  1754. who value

  1755. even the

  1756. smallest

  1757. sparrow,

  1758. how much

  1759. more you

  1760. value and

  1761. love and

  1762. care for

  1763. us.

  1764. Help us

  1765. to rejoice

  1766. in the

  1767. love and

  1768. the care

  1769. you have

  1770. for us.

  1771. We thank

  1772. you are

  1773. the Father

  1774. who wants

  1775. to forgive

  1776. us and

  1777. to restore

  1778. us to

  1779. yourself.

  1780. We pray

  1781. for any

  1782. here who

  1783. are far

  1784. from you

  1785. this morning,

  1786. whether

  1787. far from

  1788. you,

  1789. as have

  1790. never

  1791. come to

  1792. know the

  1793. Lord

  1794. Jesus,

  1795. perhaps

  1796. far spiritually,

  1797. having fallen

  1798. away from

  1799. love for

  1800. him.

  1801. Help them

  1802. to understand

  1803. that you

  1804. are the

  1805. loving

  1806. Father

  1807. who will

  1808. welcome

  1809. them as

  1810. they come

  1811. through the

  1812. Lord Jesus

  1813. with their

  1814. trust in

  1815. him.

  1816. Help those

  1817. of us

  1818. who know

  1819. and who

  1820. love the

  1821. Lord to

  1822. make that

  1823. evident all

  1824. around us

  1825. that we

  1826. won't be

  1827. afraid of

  1828. men,

  1829. that we

  1830. will recognise

  1831. that our

  1832. God is

  1833. great,

  1834. our God

  1835. is with

  1836. us,

  1837. our God

  1838. sees

  1839. everything.

  1840. And help

  1841. us to

  1842. have lives

  1843. of openness

  1844. and honesty

  1845. and not

  1846. to fall

  1847. into this

  1848. trap of

  1849. hypocrisy

  1850. that the

  1851. Pharisees

  1852. had incited

  1853. others into.

  1854. Thank you

  1855. for our

  1856. time together.

  1857. We commit

  1858. ourselves to

  1859. you.

  1860. We want to

  1861. pray again

  1862. for those

  1863. who have

  1864. been affected

  1865. by the

  1866. bombing in

  1867. Manchester

  1868. and for

  1869. your comfort

  1870. and your

  1871. strength for

  1872. them.

  1873. We give

  1874. you our

  1875. thanks and

  1876. commit

  1877. ourselves to

  1878. you.

  1879. In Jesus'

  1880. name.

  1881. Amen.
