  1. Well, good evening. It's good to be with you this evening at Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  2. Greetings to you from the rest of the pastors and the elders at Corroboros Christian Centre across town.

  3. I have to apologise to you this evening if my voice starts to fade a little bit.

  4. The Nixon household has been unwell this week, and this morning I didn't have a voice when I woke up,

  5. but fortunately when I was preaching it came back.

  6. So let's hope it doesn't work the other way tonight that I start off with a voice and it runs out by the end.

  7. Now, it's been great to be able to sing the passage that we're going to be looking at together,

  8. this evening. It was also great to hear it in a word, wrapped, to us at the very start.

  9. I don't think I can follow that. I'm definitely more of an abide with me person rather than a

  10. wrapped person, but it certainly helped us to think about what we're going to be looking at tonight in the Scriptures.

  11. See, tonight we're going to be spending time in the heart and the soul of the psalmist Asaph.

  12. Imagine that you are sitting with this guy over here, over coughing, and he is unburdening his soul to you.

  13. He is confessing to you how his faith in God almost collapsed and failed him.

  14. You see, Asaph is cracking under the assault and the burden of doubts.

  15. If you have ever wrestled with hard questions or doubts about the Lord, questions like,

  16. is the Bible historically reliable? Can I trust it?

  17. Is Jesus a real person? Did he really exist? Did he really live? Did he really die? Did he really rise again?

  18. Can I be certain about his promises that he makes to me in the gospel that if I believe in him,

  19. I'll be forgiven for my sins and I'll have the hope of heaven?

  20. If you've ever wrestled with questions about, can I be sure about these things,

  21. then you can well sympathize with Asaph in his time of uncertainty.

  22. I've spent many hours in recent years fielding questions from sceptical people at universities around the country,

  23. people who think that the Christian faith is irrational and irrelevant.

  24. I've also spent many an hour pastorally counselling people in my own church and in other churches

  25. who have been struggling as believers, whose faith has been thrown into tremendous doubt and uncertainty

  26. by things that they have read, by questions that have come into their minds

  27. or that they have been exposed to in the world. And these doubts, they have stolen their joy

  28. and have hindered their walk and their effectiveness for Christ.

  29. And so when we think about doubts tonight, I know that we're going to a place that is dangerous.

  30. We're going into a place that is uncomfortable.

  31. And it should be uncomfortable because we're actually going into the trenches this evening together.

  32. The trenches at the front line of the war of scepticism against faith.

  33. But before we get into that battle, before we jump into the trenches,

  34. it's so good to begin our time together where Asaph begins.

  35. Because he knows he's about to take us on a hard journey.

  36. And so right at the very beginning of his psalm, as we have heard, as we have sang,

  37. in verse 1, Asaph tells us what his ultimate conclusion was.

  38. The conviction that has been tested and tried in the furnace of affliction

  39. and that has been proven to be true.

  40. Verse 1, truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

  41. Asaph wants us to know before we get into this battle,

  42. that it is possible to make it out onto the other side.

  43. It is possible to keep going in faith.

  44. And his confession in Psalm 73 shows us the way that we can go,

  45. the way through the minefield of spiritual doubt and uncertainty.

  46. So I'm not going to read the passage again.

  47. We've heard it.

  48. We've sang most of it.

  49. But what I'm planning to do is I plan to walk you through all the passage.

  50. So let's just get stuck in straight away.

  51. I've got three things for you this evening.

  52. The first thing is, the first step, if you like, through the minefield of doubt

  53. is to confess your doubts about God.

  54. You'll find this comes out of verses 1 to 14 of the passage.

  55. Asaph begins by confessing to us how unstable his faith has become.

  56. He says in verse 2,

  57. As for me, my feet had almost stumbled.

  58. My steps had nearly slipped.

  59. Now what has so deeply unsettled Asaph?

  60. Well, he confesses to us the reason in verse 3, if you look at it.

  61. He says,

  62. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

  63. Now you're meant to have a bit of an experience of deja vu when you hear the prosperity of the wicked here.

  64. You're meant to hear an echo of the opening words of the opening psalm.

  65. Psalm 1.

  66. That psalm states that there are two roads in life.

  67. There is the way of the righteous, which leads to life.

  68. And there is the way of the wicked that leads to death.

  69. Psalm 1 says these words very confidently.

  70. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.

  71. It goes on and says,

  72. Instead, his delight is in the law of the Lord.

  73. In all that he does, he prospers.

  74. Then he finishes verse 6 of Psalm 1.

  75. The way of the wicked will perish.

  76. That's the way it's meant to be.

  77. The righteous are meant to prosper.

  78. The wicked are meant to perish.

  79. That's what the Bible says.

  80. Asaph knows that.

  81. And yet that is not what Asaph has experienced in life.

  82. He has seen the absolute reversal of that.

  83. He, a righteous man, is suffering while the wicked prosper.

  84. You see, Asaph lived during dark and difficult days.

  85. Faithless times in the nation of Israel.

  86. It was a time of division socially, of decline and depravity.

  87. In the private home and also in the public square,

  88. the sins of injustice and immorality and idolatry were rampant.

  89. This was a plague upon the nation.

  90. And Asaph confesses to us this evening that these dark times

  91. had raised dark thoughts in his mind and in his soul.

  92. As he then goes through the next set of verses,

  93. you can listen to him as he complains,

  94. as he confesses what he's angry at God for,

  95. why he is frustrated, why he is doubting.

  96. Listen as he complains about, first of all,

  97. how the wicked live in luxury and leisure.

  98. Verses 4 and 5.

  99. For they have no pangs until death.

  100. Their bodies are fat and sleek.

  101. They are not in trouble as others are.

  102. They are not stricken like the rest of mankind.

  103. Jump down to verse 12.

  104. He returns to this theme again.

  105. He says,

  106. Behold, these are the wicked.

  107. Always at ease, they increase in riches.

  108. Asaph is complaining here, it's not fair.

  109. It shouldn't be this way.

  110. He goes on in verses 6, 7, and 8

  111. to complain about how the wicked are desperately antisocial.

  112. He says,

  113. Therefore pride is their necklace.

  114. Violence covers them as a garment.

  115. Their eyes swell out through fatness.

  116. Their hearts overflow with follies.

  117. They scoff and speak with malice.

  118. Loftily they threaten oppression.

  119. You wouldn't want to live with these people as your neighbors.

  120. These are horrendous people to live around.

  121. Asaph lives in fear of his life day and night.

  122. But he goes on again in verses 9, 10, and 11

  123. to complain about how the wicked are defiant in their unbelief.

  124. Verse 9.

  125. They set their mouths against the heavens

  126. and their tongues struts through the earth.

  127. And they say,

  128. How can God know?

  129. Is there knowledge in the Most High?

  130. If you were to put yourself for a moment into Asaph's shoes,

  131. if you were to feel with him and for him in the midst of this dark time,

  132. then you'll recognize this is tough.

  133. This is really tough, excruciating.

  134. It throws into question everything that he has believed about God

  135. and God's promises to his people.

  136. Then in verses 13 and 14,

  137. he almost reached the lowest point of Asaph's journey.

  138. Listen as Asaph confesses just how dark his thoughts and his doubts had become.

  139. All in vain have I kept my heart clean

  140. and washed my hands in innocence.

  141. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.

  142. What's the point?

  143. Is basically what Asaph is asking.

  144. What's the point?

  145. It's not worth it.

  146. It's a lie.

  147. Maybe I would be better off throwing my lot in with the wicked.

  148. Maybe you've been in a place like that before.

  149. Maybe you have asked hard questions about difficult issues.

  150. Maybe you've considered questions like,

  151. why would a good God allow bad things to happen

  152. like the Manchester bombing a few weeks ago

  153. or like the London Bridge attack last night?

  154. Where was God when that happened?

  155. Maybe you would ask questions like,

  156. what if my belief in God is just wishful, delusional thinking?

  157. How can I be sure it's real?

  158. What if I can't trust the Bible in light of the findings of science?

  159. What if it's not reliable?

  160. What if it's not true?

  161. These are hard questions that come to many of us at different times.

  162. I wouldn't be surprised if you struggle with these things.

  163. Confess that I struggle with these things from time to time.

  164. And all of us will face these things, these questions, these issues,

  165. because we live in a dominantly secular society.

  166. 21st century Scotland is a secular society.

  167. Fewer than 5% of the population would confess to be Christians of one sort or another.

  168. We are day in, day out bombarded with information and media and ideology

  169. that is contrary to what we believe is true in the Bible.

  170. In our society today, our beliefs are often mocked

  171. and our values are now being seen as being positively dangerous.

  172. There are very articulate atheist personalities

  173. who are out there in the public square,

  174. people like Richard Dawkins, Stephen Fry, Brian Cox.

  175. And rarely do we hear what they have to say answered by a competent Christian spokesperson.

  176. Usually these guys wipe the floor with some bishop in the Church of England.

  177. Okay?

  178. And so I would even suggest to you this evening

  179. that we might face harder assaults on our faith

  180. than what Asaph endured all the years before in Psalm 73.

  181. We are in a substantially more difficult situation today.

  182. And that is why I'm so encouraged to find in God's book this psalm.

  183. To find that God has preserved for all the centuries,

  184. for all his people,

  185. the journey of Asaph through his time of doubt,

  186. his time of darkness.

  187. Because God has given us words to use

  188. when we find ourselves in this kind of place.

  189. God has given us a pathway to follow

  190. through the minefield of spiritual doubt and affliction.

  191. If you find yourselves wrestling with the things

  192. that Asaph is wrestling with on your journey through life,

  193. then turn to this psalm and follow Asaph.

  194. He has charted the way through.

  195. And so the first thing that Asaph does

  196. is he confesses his doubts about God.

  197. But he doesn't stop there.

  198. What's the way on?

  199. What are we to do with our doubts?

  200. Well, the second thing is to bring your doubts to God.

  201. You see this in verses 15, 16, and 17.

  202. And the first thing to notice in verse 15 is

  203. there is one thing that Asaph did not do with his doubts.

  204. And that's that he did not recklessly expose

  205. everyone else to them.

  206. He didn't unnecessarily rattle everyone's faith.

  207. Remember, he's just buried his soul to us

  208. in verses 13 and 14.

  209. All in vain have I done these things.

  210. And then verse 15 picks up and says,

  211. if I had said, I will speak thus.

  212. That's stuff in verses 13 and 14.

  213. If I had said those things,

  214. I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

  215. You see, Asaph was a wee bit like Fiona this evening

  216. who's been leading us in worship.

  217. Asaph was a worship leader in the temple of God.

  218. He had a position of responsibility in God's people.

  219. He was an example to all of them

  220. about what the life of faith looks like.

  221. And so as he, as the model believer, if you like,

  222. the faithful Israelite,

  223. as he is gripped and crippled by doubts inside of him,

  224. he doesn't start a blog.

  225. He doesn't start tweeting to all of his followers

  226. to publicly air these things.

  227. That would have done tremendously great harm

  228. to faithful Israelites who already were struggling

  229. in the midst of the dark times

  230. that Israel was facing in those days.

  231. They were looking up to Asaph,

  232. and the last thing they needed was Asaph to go awal.

  233. And so Asaph did not recklessly tell everybody

  234. what he was thinking.

  235. But also Asaph did not just hold on to these things privately

  236. and keep them to himself and try and resolve them.

  237. Instead, the turning point for Asaph in this psalm

  238. comes whenever he stopped holding on to his doubts himself,

  239. trying to work them out on his own.

  240. And he takes his complaints, he takes his questions,

  241. he takes his doubts and his issues to God himself.

  242. Asaph, verses 16 and 17 said,

  243. but when I thought how to understand this,

  244. it seemed to me a wearisome task

  245. until I went into the sanctuary of God.

  246. Then I discerned their end.

  247. Asaph went into God's temple in Jerusalem

  248. on top of Mount Zion.

  249. That is the place where he knew God could be found.

  250. That is the place where God's presence

  251. dwelled among his people.

  252. I wonder, did Asaph remember the words of Solomon

  253. whenever he had opened the temple years before?

  254. Read about that event in 1 Kings chapter 8

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  255. where Solomon prays in dedication.

  256. May your eyes be opened toward this temple night and day.

  257. This place of which you have said,

  258. my name shall be there.

  259. So that you will hear the prayer

  260. your servant prays towards this place.

  261. Hear the supplication of your servant

  262. and of your people Israel

  263. when they pray towards this place.

  264. Hear from heaven your dwelling place.

  265. And when you hear, forgive.

  266. I wonder, is that the thing that is in Asaph's mind

  267. when he chooses to go up to the temple of the Lord?

  268. Does he remember the promise

  269. that this is the one place that he knows

  270. that God can be found?

  271. This is the place where if he is praying,

  272. God will be hearing

  273. and God will be answering his requests for help.

  274. And so Asaph, responding to the promise of God in the past,

  275. goes up into the temple.

  276. He perhaps stands with the congregation

  277. as they stand and worship.

  278. He sits as the priests open up the book of the law

  279. and they preach and teach the people.

  280. He observes the sacrifices taking place

  281. as still faithful Israelites come

  282. bringing their sacrifices to have their sins atoned for.

  283. And as he spent time there in God's presence,

  284. in the temple,

  285. it seems that everything changed

  286. in Asaph's troubled, disquieted soul and mind.

  287. Now for us today, we don't have a temple, do we?

  288. This place is a beautiful, wonderful place,

  289. but this is not a temple.

  290. We don't have a temple to bring our troubles

  291. into a building.

  292. But we do have something,

  293. indeed someone,

  294. that is far better.

  295. You see, the glory of God today

  296. does not dwell in a building of bricks and mortar,

  297. but the glory of God dwells in

  298. the body of a person of flesh and blood.

  299. His name is Jesus Christ.

  300. You don't have a place to go into,

  301. but you do have a person

  302. whom you can invite into your struggles.

  303. Someone who is willing to walk alongside you

  304. and journey with you

  305. and help you through those dark,

  306. difficult storms of fear and doubt.

  307. And the Lord Jesus,

  308. he is accessible anytime,

  309. anywhere,

  310. about anything.

  311. And he welcomes us when we come to him.

  312. If our doubts and our struggles,

  313. he's glad that we would come and turn to him.

  314. He welcomes us even when we come

  315. with simple,

  316. struggling,

  317. doubting faith.

  318. I know that because

  319. that's what you see

  320. when you read about Jesus in the Gospels.

  321. When you read about his life,

  322. that's exactly what happened

  323. when people who were struggling came to him.

  324. One of my favorite stories in the Gospels

  325. is in Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  326. In that story,

  327. a father brings his demon-possessed son to Jesus.

  328. The father has tried everything

  329. to try and get his boy freed

  330. from this force that wants to destroy

  331. and take his life.

  332. This demonic presence throws him into the fire,

  333. throws him into water to drown him.

  334. He's out to destroy this little boy's life.

  335. The father doesn't know what to do,

  336. but he hears that Jesus is in town.

  337. The father brings his son to Jesus

  338. because he believes Jesus can do something to help

  339. that no one else can do.

  340. Yet nevertheless,

  341. the father does not fully know

  342. what to make of Jesus.

  343. His faith is mixed with fear and uncertainty.

  344. And as he comes to Jesus,

  345. he confesses this.

  346. Mark chapter 9, verse 24.

    Mark 9:24

  347. Lord, I believe.

  348. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  349. You wonder, how will Jesus react?

  350. He's just come to him and said,

  351. Jesus, I need you to help me with something,

  352. but I'm not fully convinced.

  353. I've got some unbelief and doubt in me.

  354. Does Jesus react and say, go away?

  355. Does Jesus say,

  356. how dare you come to me

  357. when you don't fully believe in me?

  358. Is Jesus angry?

  359. No.

  360. No.

  361. No.

  362. Jesus sees this man's dear heart,

  363. his love for his son.

  364. He sees that he is troubled,

  365. that he is doubting and uncertain.

  366. And Jesus gives him a reason to believe.

  367. And Jesus helps him.

  368. And Jesus heals his son.

  369. That story is great news for all of us

  370. when we struggle and we wrestle with our doubts.

  371. It shows us that Jesus has opened wide arms

  372. and says, come.

  373. Yeah, you've got struggling, doubting, faith.

  374. So come.

  375. Invite me into your doubts and into your struggles.

  376. I'll be there with you.

  377. I won't abandon you.

  378. We can be honest with God.

  379. We don't have to run away and hide from him.

  380. We don't have to pretend with him.

  381. We don't have to be ashamed.

  382. We can bring these things to God.

  383. We can ask him for his help to work things through.

  384. We can bring these things alongside

  385. a trusted Christian friend.

  386. Because God, by his Holy Spirit,

  387. will minister to you through

  388. that wise Christian friend or pastor or elder.

  389. They will help you.

  390. There have been many Christians

  391. who I have never met in my lifetime,

  392. but who have hugely helped me

  393. and ministered to my heart and my soul

  394. with my doubts and questions

  395. through their books.

  396. People like, if it comes up,

  397. Ravi Zacharias.

  398. People like Tim Keller.

  399. Even people like C.S. Lewis or Lee Struble

  400. who were committed skeptics,

  401. who actually selected to disprove the Christian faith.

  402. And on their journey of research,

  403. discovered, oh goodness, it's true,

  404. and became Christians.

  405. These people and many more

  406. have been dear friends to me

  407. whom God has used to minister

  408. into my heart to teach me

  409. and to help me work through things.

  410. And so when you are struggling with doubt,

  411. the first thing to do

  412. is to confess your doubts about God.

  413. And the next thing to do

  414. is to bring your doubts to God.

  415. He's big enough.

  416. But then we need to see what happens next

  417. as the psalm resolves itself

  418. in verses 18 to 28.

  419. And this is the third thing,

  420. that you can resolve your doubts

  421. by taking God at his word.

  422. You see, doubts ultimately revolve

  423. around the question,

  424. can I trust what God has said is true?

  425. Can I trust that what God has said

  426. in his book is true?

  427. Can I stake my life, my death,

  428. my eternity upon it?

  429. That's the question

  430. that Asaph is wrestling with.

  431. Is it in vain?

  432. And that's the question

  433. that is resolved in his mind

  434. and in his heart through his journey.

  435. In the temple,

  436. there were no heavenly visions.

  437. There were no incredible miracles.

  438. God didn't answer

  439. all of Asaph's questions,

  440. didn't resolve all of his issues and doubts.

  441. But God did bring into new focus

  442. in Asaph's mind some old truths.

  443. And that's what got him through.

  444. Indeed, there are three new assurances

  445. about old truths

  446. in this last part of the psalm.

  447. These are the things that served as fuel

  448. to keep the flame of Asaph's faith burning

  449. in the midst of the dark times

  450. in which he lived.

  451. First of all,

  452. there was a new assurance

  453. about the peril of the wicked.

  454. See this in verses 18 to 20.

  455. Of the wicked, Asaph now sees,

  456. truly you set them in slippery places.

  457. You make them fall to ruin.

  458. How they are destroyed in a moment,

  459. swept away utterly by terrors.

  460. Like a dream when one awakes,

  461. O Lord, when you rise yourself,

  462. you despise them as phantoms.

  463. Then there's a new assurance

  464. about the security of the righteous.

  465. Verse 21 to verse 24.

  466. Asaph says,

  467. When my soul was embittered,

  468. when I was pricked in heart,

  469. I was brutish and ignorant.

  470. I was like a beast towards you.

  471. Nevertheless,

  472. I am continually with you.

  473. You hold my right hand.

  474. You guide me with your counsel.

  475. And afterward,

  476. you will receive me to glory.

  477. And then there's a new assurance

  478. about the goodness of God.

  479. The last four verses.

  480. Whom am I in heaven but you?

  481. And there is nothing on earth

  482. that I desire besides you.

  483. My flesh and my heart may fail,

  484. but God is the strength of my heart

  485. and my portion forever.

  486. For behold,

  487. those who are far from you shall perish.

  488. You put an end to everyone

  489. who is unfaithful to you.

  490. But for me,

  491. it is good to be near God.

  492. I have made the Lord God my refuge

  493. that I may tell of all your works.

  494. Finish it off.

  495. Go back to verse one.

  496. Truly God is good to Israel,

  497. to those who are pure in heart.

  498. Asaph's struggle was provoked

  499. by his present sufferings.

  500. The righteous suffering,

  501. the wicked prospering.

  502. It's the wrong way around.

  503. But now he has a new perspective

  504. on these events

  505. in the light of the future.

  506. Because yes, right now,

  507. the righteous do suffer,

  508. the wicked do prosper.

  509. But it will not always be that way.

  510. God's going to put things right.

  511. Just as you wouldn't judge

  512. the winner of a race

  513. by who's leading at halfway time.

  514. Just in the same way,

  515. you shouldn't say that

  516. just because the wicked are ahead,

  517. just know that they're always

  518. going to be ahead.

  519. No, when all is said and done,

  520. when time is up,

  521. when the finish line is crossed,

  522. we will find things being

  523. as yackly as God has said,

  524. that the righteous

  525. shall prosper forevermore

  526. and the wicked shall perish

  527. forevermore.

  528. Indeed,

  529. verse 20 says

  530. that the wicked will vanish

  531. like a bad dream

  532. when you wake up

  533. first thing in the morning.

  534. It was so real.

  535. And then you open your eyes

  536. and you can't even remember

  537. what it was.

  538. They will vanish

  539. like phantoms.

  540. And Asaph takes

  541. all these things,

  542. all these old truths

  543. to heart in a new way.

  544. And he resolves

  545. to trust God

  546. in these dark days.

  547. And Asaph today

  548. is alive in glory.

  549. Asaph today

  550. sees

  551. that this is true,

  552. that God

  553. did not disappoint him.

  554. And Asaph would say to us

  555. if he was here,

  556. keep going.

  557. Keep going.

  558. Things will right themselves

  559. in the end.

  560. Now as we sort of

  561. wrap things up

  562. for this evening,

  563. we have to ask

  564. who do you most identify with

  565. in this psalm?

  566. Whom are you?

  567. Are you an Asaph?

  568. A Christian,

  569. a believer,

  570. but you're beset

  571. by troubles and doubts

  572. at this time

  573. about your faith.

  574. Let me urge you

  575. to follow in Asaph's footsteps

  576. and do exactly

  577. these things,

  578. to confess these things

  579. openly about God,

  580. to bring them to him

  581. and to someone

  582. who's trusted,

  583. to read,

  584. to learn,

  585. to discuss,

  586. to pray

  587. and ask for help.

  588. and resolve

  589. by trusting

  590. that what God says

  591. is true

  592. and will be proved

  593. to be true.

  594. So,

  595. wise piece of advice.

  596. I've never been able

  597. to find out who said it,

  598. but they said,

  599. doubt your doubts

  600. and believe your beliefs.

  601. But whatever you do,

  602. don't make the mistake

  603. of doubting your beliefs

  604. and believing your doubts.

  605. You need to know

  606. that every time

  607. you have a doubt,

  608. what you're actually

  609. encountering

  610. is an entirely

  611. alternative set of beliefs.

  612. So,

  613. you're doubting your beliefs

  614. and that doubt itself

  615. is a world

  616. of alternative beliefs.

  617. And so,

  618. when you encounter a doubt,

  619. you need to ask

  620. questions of it.

  621. You need to push back

  622. against it

  623. and ask,

  624. okay,

  625. you're raising questions

  626. about my faith

  627. and the reasons

  628. that I have for my faith,

  629. but what reasons

  630. do you have doubt

  631. for saying what you say?

  632. Are your reasons

  633. any better than my reasons

  634. for believing

  635. that Jesus Christ

  636. is the Son of God

  637. in the flesh,

  638. that he lived,

  639. he died,

  640. he rose again?

  641. Do you have better reasons

  642. to doubt?

  643. I guarantee you,

  644. time after time

  645. after time,

  646. it doesn't.

  647. And so,

  648. believe your beliefs,

  649. doubt your doubts.

  650. Don't make the mistake

  651. of believing your doubts

  652. and doubting your beliefs.

  653. Look at the reasons.

  654. Are you like those tonight

  655. who are called

  656. by Asaph the wicked?

  657. Those who live their lives

  658. independently from

  659. and defiantly

  660. against God.

  661. Because Asaph sees

  662. that if that is

  663. who you are this evening,

  664. if that is how you live

  665. your life here and now,

  666. then that is also

  667. how you will live your life

  668. throughout all the endless

  669. ages of eternity.

  670. C.S. Lewis,

  671. the Christian writer,

  672. once said that in the end

  673. there are only two types

  674. of people in the world.

  675. Those who say to God,

  676. thy will be done,

  677. and those to whom God

  678. will say,

  679. your will be done.

  680. Terrible words.

  681. And God does not want you

  682. to perish like the wicked.

  683. That's why he sent his son,

  684. Jesus,

  685. into this world.

  686. John 3.16 tells us,

  687. for God so loved the world

  688. that he sent us

  689. his one and only son

  690. so that whoever believes

  691. in him should not perish

  692. but have everlasting life.

  693. The thing that Asaph

  694. was hoping for

  695. and looking for

  696. in this psalm.

  697. If you're among the wicked

  698. this evening,

  699. then turn and trust in Jesus.

  700. But maybe there's a third

  701. type of person

  702. who would be here

  703. this evening.

  704. And maybe you're

  705. the sort of person

  706. who is searching.

  707. You're searching for answers.

  708. You're searching for meaning.

  709. You're searching for that thing

  710. that seems to be missing

  711. in your life.

  712. And maybe you have discovered

  713. that the prosperity

  714. of the wicked,

  715. the prosperity of this present life

  716. doesn't truly satisfy.

  717. Perhaps you're like

  718. the old billionaire

  719. Robert Maxwell

  720. who said,

  721. I worked all my life

  722. to reach the top

  723. only to realize

  724. when I got there

  725. there's nothing there.

  726. A man who was found

  727. not long after saying that

  728. over the side

  729. of his private yacht

  730. dead in the water.

  731. Perhaps you are

  732. wanting the kind of assurance

  733. that Asaph has

  734. at the end of this psalm

  735. that he can say

  736. that even though

  737. my heart and my flesh

  738. shall fail

  739. yet you are

  740. the strength of my life

  741. and my portion forever.

  742. If you're here

  743. this evening

  744. and you are searching

  745. and you're looking

  746. then what you're looking for

  747. is the Lord Jesus.

  748. Your heart is

  749. like a home and beacon

  750. for him.

  751. And so I'd urge you

  752. I would encourage you

  753. to please

  754. investigate Jesus

  755. for yourself.

  756. There are people here

  757. at the church

  758. who can help you.

  759. Someone who brought you

  760. perhaps can help you

  761. and point you

  762. in the right direction.

  763. But please

  764. whatever you do

  765. investigate him.

  766. It will be the most

  767. important thing

  768. that you ever do.

  769. With these words

  770. I want to close

  771. in there from C.S. Lewis

  772. again and he said

  773. that Christianity

  774. is a statement

  775. which if false

  776. is of no importance

  777. and if true

  778. of infinite importance

  779. the one thing

  780. it cannot be

  781. is moderately important.

  782. So if you're searching

  783. tonight

  784. find out more.

  785. Let's pray.

  786. Let's pray.

  787. Lord and Father

  788. we thank you

  789. that you truly

  790. are good to Israel.

  791. You are truly good

  792. to your church.

  793. Thank you for your

  794. wonderful love

  795. that you sent your son

  796. to rescue us.

  797. We who were counted

  798. among the wicked.

  799. We who lived our lives

  800. in sin

  801. ignoring you

  802. couldn't care less

  803. about you.

  804. Thank you

  805. that you have

  806. come down

  807. and rescued us.

  808. Thank you

  809. that you are

  810. the God

  811. who also

  812. is open to questions

  813. that you have

  814. given us

  815. minds to think

  816. and to reason.

  817. Thank you

  818. that the faith

  819. that we have

  820. stands up to scrutiny.

  821. We thank you

  822. for the great

  823. encouragements

  824. that over the

  825. many centuries

  826. that the Christian

  827. church has been here

  828. that the greatest

  829. intellectual minds

  830. of atheism

  831. have attacked it

  832. and sought

  833. to destroy it.

  834. Other religions

  835. have come in

  836. with their other ideas

  837. and yet the one thing

  838. that has stood

  839. unshakable,

  840. firm,

  841. unmoving

  842. is the word of God

  843. and the Bible

  844. and the gospel

  845. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  846. Thank you

  847. that it has

  848. stood the test

  849. of time.

  850. It has stood

  851. as the rock

  852. of ages

  853. and so help us

  854. today

  855. to cling tightly

  856. as we live

  857. in our society

  858. which is filled

  859. with unbelief

  860. and doubt

  861. and godlessness

  862. and atheism

  863. and agnosticism.

  864. Help us

  865. to stand firm

  866. and cling fast

  867. to the rock

  868. and help us

  869. Lord

  870. as we wrestle

  871. with the

  872. uncertainties

  873. and the questions

  874. that come up

  875. into our minds,

  876. the questions

  877. that other people

  878. would share with us

  879. that they're wrestling

  880. with.

  881. Help us

  882. to journey

  883. with Asaph

  884. and help us

  885. to reach the other

  886. side,

  887. keeping going

  888. in faith

  889. and reaching

  890. that same conclusion

  891. that truly

  892. you are good,

  893. truly your word

  894. is trustworthy.

  895. So Lord,

  896. have your way

  897. in our hearts

  898. and our minds

  899. this evening.

  900. We pray in Jesus' name.

  901. Amen.

  902. Amen.

  903. Amen.

  904. Amen.

  905. Amen.

  906. Amen.

  907. Amen.

  908. Amen.

  909. Amen.

  910. Amen.

  911. Amen.

  912. Amen.

  913. Amen.

  914. Amen.

  915. Amen.

  916. Amen.

  917. Amen.

  918. Amen.

  919. Amen.

  920. Amen.

  921. Amen.
