  1. It's a joy to be with you tonight. I feel in a very exalted position here.

  2. I hope I don't move around, I'll be falling off the stage.

  3. After three great introductory sermons, and I took the time to listen to all three of them,

  4. I have to say, very comprehensive, we come to the first of the judges tonight

  5. that the Lord raised up to deliver his people.

  6. So, if you have your Bible, we're in chapter 3, and we're reading from verse 7.

  7. The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  8. They forgot the Lord their God, and they served the Baals and the Asharahs.

  9. The anger of the Lord burned against Israel,

  10. so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan Rishathayim, king of Aram Naharim,

  11. to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.

  12. When they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer,

  13. Othniel, son of Canaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them.

  14. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war.

  15. The Lord gave Cushan Rishathayim, king of Aram, into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.

  16. So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel, son of Canaz, died.

  17. Once again, the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,

  18. and because they did this evil, the Lord gave Eglon, king of Moab, power over Israel.

  19. Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel,

  20. and they took possession of the city of Pams.

  21. The Israelites were subject to Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.

  22. Again, the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer, Ehud,

  23. a left-handed man, the son of Gerah the Benjamite.

  24. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.

  25. Now, Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long,

  26. which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.

  27. He presented the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab, who was a very fat man.

  28. After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had carried it.

  29. At the idols near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said,

  30. I have a secret message for you, O king.

  31. The king said, Quiet.

  32. And all his attendants left him.

  33. Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his summer palace,

  34. and said, I have a message from God for you.

  35. As the king rose from his seat, Ehud reached with his left hand,

  36. drew the sword from his right thigh, plunged it into the king's belly.

  37. Even the handle sank in after the blade which came out of his back.

  38. Ehud did not pull the sword out,

  39. and the fat closed in over it.

  40. Then Ehud went out to the porch,

  41. he shut the doors of the upper room behind him,

  42. and he locked them.

  43. After he had gone,

  44. the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked.

  45. They said,

  46. He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the house.

  47. They waited to the point of embarrassment,

  48. but when he did not open the doors of the room,

  49. they took a key and unlocked them.

  50. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor,

  51. dead.

  52. While they waited,

  53. Ehud got away.

  54. He passed by the idols and escaped to Syrah.

  55. When he arrived there,

  56. he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim,

  57. and the Israelites went down with him from the hills,

  58. with him leading them.

  59. Follow me, he ordered,

  60. for the Lord has given Moab your enemy into your hands.

  61. So they followed him down,

  62. and taking possession of the fords of the Jordan

  63. that led to Moab,

  64. they allowed no one to cross over.

  65. At that time they struck down about 10,000 Moabites,

  66. all vigorous and strong.

  67. Not a man escaped.

  68. That day Moab was made subject to Israel,

  69. and the land had peace for 80 years.

  70. After Ehud came Shamgar,

  71. son of Eanath,

  72. who struck down 600 Philistines

  73. with an ox god.

  74. He too saved Israel.

  75. And this is God's word.

  76. Amen.

  77. I was reminded recently

  78. that in forming a worldview,

  79. there are at least four specific questions

  80. that need to be answered.

  81. If you're wanting to see the world in a certain way,

  82. you've got to answer four questions.

  83. Question one,

  84. where did everything come from?

  85. The question of origins,

  86. did everything come from nothing?

  87. Or did everything come from something?

  88. Or did everything come from someone?

  89. To have a worldview,

  90. you need to answer that question.

  91. Second question,

  92. what's happened to make us the way we are?

  93. Something's wrong.

  94. Why do people get sick?

  95. Why do people die?

  96. As the old hymn puts it,

  97. change and decay

  98. in all around I see.

  99. Why?

  100. These things and many other things

  101. require an explanation

  102. because things

  103. are simply not as they are supposed to be.

  104. And all of us deep down

  105. know that to be true.

  106. That's another question

  107. that needs to be answered.

  108. What's wrong?

  109. The third question is,

  110. is there any hope?

  111. Can what is broken be fixed?

  112. If so,

  113. who or what can fix it?

  114. And when and where and how

  115. can it be fixed?

  116. And then of course,

  117. there's the fourth question.

  118. What is the end of the story going to be?

  119. We need to address the issue of destiny.

  120. So, if you're making a worldview,

  121. if you're wanting to have a worldview,

  122. these are the questions

  123. that need to be answered.

  124. As far as the Christian worldview is concerned,

  125. the first three questions

  126. are answered in the first three chapters

  127. of the book of Genesis.

  128. The Bible begins,

  129. In the beginning,

  130. God created the heavens and the earth.

  131. There's the first answer to the question,

  132. as far as the Christian is concerned.

  133. And we're told that everything God made

  134. was very good.

  135. Question one answered.

  136. Then came the fall,

  137. as our first parents rebelled

  138. and disobeyed their Creator.

  139. Death came into the picture,

  140. as promised.

  141. Everything was cursed.

  142. Nature became raw in tooth and claw.

  143. That answers the second question.

  144. The problem is really

  145. sin.

  146. That answers question two.

  147. No sooner had that happened,

  148. and we have recorded

  149. that wonderful promise of hope

  150. in Genesis 3.15,

  151. telling us that the seed of the woman

  152. would come to bruise

  153. the head of the serpent.

  154. He, whoever he is,

  155. when he came,

  156. he would deal with the problem,

  157. but he would deal with it

  158. at great cost to himself.

  159. And that points us, of course,

  160. to the coming of the Lord Jesus

  161. into the world

  162. on his great rescue mission.

  163. His name would be Jesus,

  164. for he would save his people

  165. from their sins.

  166. That answers question three,

  167. as far as the Christian is concerned.

  168. And the rest of the Bible

  169. moves us on

  170. in expectation

  171. and anticipation

  172. of the day

  173. when Jesus will come again

  174. and usher in the new heavens

  175. and the new earth.

  176. And that

  177. is the biblical answer

  178. to question four.

  179. How's it all going to end?

  180. In a few sentences,

  181. with a few broad brush strokes,

  182. as it were,

  183. there you have

  184. the Christian's worldview.

  185. However,

  186. at every stage

  187. in world history,

  188. our problem

  189. as the people of God

  190. has been a failure

  191. to live

  192. in the light

  193. of these great foundational

  194. fundamental truths.

  195. Always say we believe them,

  196. but we've really failed

  197. very often to live

  198. in the light of them,

  199. and never more so

  200. than during the period

  201. of the judges.

  202. The problem

  203. with the Israelites

  204. in the time

  205. of the judges

  206. was that they fell

  207. again and again

  208. at this hurdle.

  209. On the one hand,

  210. they failed to take sin

  211. seriously.

  212. On the other hand,

  213. they failed to fix their eyes

  214. on the one

  215. who is invisible.

  216. Therefore,

  217. they failed

  218. to glorify God

  219. in the midst

  220. of a surrounding

  221. godless culture.

  222. God required of them

  223. the most radical response,

  224. in terms of

  225. a biblical separation

  226. from the world.

  227. They were to be

  228. in the world,

  229. but not of the world,

  230. not of the ways

  231. of the world,

  232. not of the wickedness

  233. of the world.

  234. The peoples of Canaan

  235. were to be removed

  236. from the scene

  237. because their life

  238. and their culture

  239. had become incorrigible.

  240. But Israel didn't do this

  241. when they could have done it

  242. and should have done it.

  243. Instead,

  244. again and again,

  245. they deliberately

  246. disobeyed the Lord.

  247. They became idolaters.

  248. They adopted a policy

  249. of peaceful coexistence.

  250. They compromised their faith

  251. in such a way

  252. that it led to their moral

  253. and spiritual influence

  254. being snuffed out.

  255. They reached a point

  256. where it was almost impossible

  257. to distinguish them

  258. from their neighbors.

  259. They fell into the trap

  260. old Matthew Henry,

  261. the English Puritan,

  262. wrote about

  263. and warned God's people

  264. in the 17th century

  265. when he said,

  266. men that have broken

  267. the fence

  268. wander endlessly.

  269. They gave way

  270. in one thing

  271. and then another

  272. until everyone

  273. was doing what was right

  274. in his own hands.

  275. That's why the book of Judges

  276. I think is so relevant.

  277. That's why I think

  278. it's so contemporary.

  279. If we put the world's view

  280. of anything

  281. before God's world view,

  282. give it any room

  283. to take root

  284. in our hearts and minds,

  285. we will find

  286. that such compromise

  287. will only lead

  288. ultimately to catastrophe.

  289. Joshua

  290. saw this coming

  291. one generation earlier.

  292. He threw down

  293. the gauntlet

  294. to the people of God

  295. towards the end

  296. of his life.

  297. He told them

  298. about all that God

  299. had done for them

  300. in bringing them

  301. into the promised land

  302. and then he said

  303. this to them

  304. in Joshua 24

    Joshua 24:14

  305. verses 14 and 15

  306. in what was his

  307. farewell address

  308. to the nation.

  309. I think it's been

  310. quoted before

  311. in one of the three

  312. introductions.

  313. Now fear the Lord,

  314. he said.

  315. He's an old man now.

  316. Fear the Lord,

  317. he said,

  318. and serve him

  319. with all faithfulness.

  320. Throw away the God

  321. your forefathers

  322. worshipped beyond the river

  323. and in Egypt

  324. and serve the Lord.

  325. But if serving the Lord

  326. seems undesirable to you,

  327. then choose for yourselves

  328. this day

  329. who you will serve.

  330. Whether the gods

  331. your forefathers

  332. served beyond the river

  333. or the gods of the Amorites

  334. in whose land

  335. you are living.

  336. But as for me

  337. and my household,

  338. we will serve the Lord.

  339. In other words,

  340. listen,

  341. I have made my choice.

  342. You must make

  343. your choice.

  344. But remember this,

  345. we will all become

  346. the choices that we make.

  347. And you remember

  348. how the people

  349. replied to that challenge?

  350. Verses 16 and 18

  351. of that chapter.

  352. Far be it from us,

  353. they said,

  354. to forsake the Lord,

  355. to serve other gods.

  356. It was the Lord,

  357. our God himself,

  358. who brought us

  359. and our fathers

  360. up out of Egypt,

  361. that land of slavery,

  362. and performed those

  363. great signs before our eyes.

  364. He protected us

  365. on our entire journey

  366. and among all the nations

  367. through which we traveled.

  368. And the Lord drove out

  369. before us

  370. all the nations,

  371. including the Amorites

  372. who lived in the land.

  373. We too will serve

  374. the Lord

  375. because he is

  376. our God.

  377. Sounds good.

  378. Sounds plausible.

  379. But old Joshua

  380. wasn't blind.

  381. Nor was he stupid.

  382. Their words were not

  383. matched by their deeds.

  384. And he could see it

  385. beginning to take place.

  386. He saw the way

  387. they were living

  388. day in and day out.

  389. He could see the signs.

  390. He could read the trends.

  391. He saw the writing

  392. was on the wall.

  393. He told them

  394. that what they were saying

  395. with their lips

  396. was not being worked out

  397. in their everyday lives.

  398. The red lights of danger,

  399. metaphorically speaking,

  400. were flashing.

  401. The alarm bells

  402. were ringing.

  403. The people

  404. lacked a heart experience

  405. of God.

  406. A generation

  407. was rising up

  408. who knew about the Lord.

  409. They probably have quoted

  410. all the doctrines

  411. that they'd been taught

  412. as wee boys

  413. and wee girls.

  414. But a generation

  415. was rising up

  416. who knew about the Lord

  417. but who didn't know

  418. the Lord.

  419. And it was second hand

  420. to them.

  421. They had forsaken the Lord.

  422. They had done evil

  423. in the eyes of the Lord.

  424. When the days of Joshua

  425. were over,

  426. but he had seen it coming.

  427. They entered into

  428. what is now known

  429. as the period

  430. of the judges

  431. with hearts

  432. that were rebellious

  433. and cold

  434. towards

  435. the God

  436. who created them

  437. and the God

  438. who had entered

  439. into a covenant

  440. with them.

  441. God delivered them

  442. into the hands

  443. of their enemies

  444. again

  445. and again

  446. and again.

  447. Enemies

  448. who would eventually

  449. move them

  450. to cry out

  451. to the Lord

  452. for help

  453. and when they did so

  454. he would deliver them

  455. again

  456. and again

  457. and again

  458. by raising up judges,

  459. saviors,

  460. deliverers,

  461. military leaders,

  462. call them what you will.

  463. So what I want to do

  464. is to look at

  465. the first three judges

  466. tonight.

  467. That's what I've been

  468. asked to do.

  469. Othniel,

  470. Ehud

  471. and Shamgar.

  472. I've called them

  473. the three mister men

  474. so that you might

  475. remember it.

  476. I did a series once

  477. in Musselboro

  478. on the mister men

  479. for the boys and girls.

  480. I was over

  481. in Ireland

  482. and I met a family there

  483. and one of them

  484. said to me

  485. when I was a wee girl

  486. I remember you did

  487. a series on the mister men.

  488. Three mister men.

  489. Othniel.

  490. What shall we call him?

  491. Mister Unique.

  492. Mister Unique.

  493. God had delivered

  494. the people

  495. into the hands

  496. of this man

  497. called Cushan Rishathain

  498. king of Aram

  499. in verse 7

  500. chapter 3

  501. because of their sin

  502. worshipping and serving

  503. the Baals and the Ashtaroths.

  504. The heat

  505. of God's jealous love

  506. will not allow

  507. his people

  508. to remain

  509. cosy and comfortable

  510. in their sin.

  511. If they don't

  512. obey his commands

  513. they will have to

  514. endure

  515. his chastening.

  516. It's the mark

  517. of being

  518. a real

  519. genuine

  520. child of God.

  521. Cushan Rishathain

  522. in the Hebrew language

  523. I understand

  524. literally means

  525. Cushan of the

  526. double wickedness.

  527. God was angry

  528. with his people

  529. and that's why

  530. he delivered them

  531. into the hands

  532. of this wicked

  533. pagan king.

  534. I like what

  535. Ralph Davis

  536. has to say on this.

  537. he says Cushan

  538. wasn't good news

  539. or bad news.

  540. He was good

  541. bad news

  542. in the sense

  543. that God

  544. is prepared

  545. to inflict

  546. misery on his

  547. people

  548. to waken them

  549. up.

  550. Only Davis

  551. could put it

  552. that way.

  553. What God

  554. was doing

  555. would not

  556. save his

  557. people

  558. but it would

  559. at least be

  560. the beginning

  561. of them

  562. feeling their

  563. need.

  564. Helping

  565. them to see

  566. what their

  567. true condition

  568. is.

  569. Their true

  570. position

  571. is.

  572. Israel was

  573. subject to

  574. this man

  575. Cushan

  576. Rishathain

  577. for eight

  578. years until

  579. finally and

  580. in sheer

  581. desperation

  582. and as a

  583. last resort

  584. they cried

  585. out to God

  586. to deliver

  587. them.

  588. Now it

  589. doesn't say

  590. they repented

  591. of their

  592. sins.

  593. They may

  594. have done

  595. but on the

  596. other hand

  597. they may not

  598. have done

  599. when they

  600. cried out

  601. but they

  602. cried out

  603. for deliverance

  604. and God

  605. had compassion

  606. on them.

  607. He was

  608. reacting

  609. if not

  610. to their

  611. penitence

  612. then to

  613. their pain.

  614. And we

  615. read in

  616. verse 9

  617. when they

  618. cried to

  619. the Lord

  620. he raised

  621. up for

  622. them a

  623. deliverer

  624. Othniel

  625. son of

  626. Canaz

  627. Caleb's

  628. younger

  629. brother

  630. who saved

  631. them.

  632. He's the

  633. first judge.

  634. The man

  635. chosen by

  636. God to

  637. be their

  638. deliverer

  639. was called

  640. Othniel.

  641. I call

  642. him Mr.

  643. Unique

  644. even

  645. although

  646. there's

  647. nothing

  648. really

  649. very

  650. outstanding

  651. about

  652. him.

  653. He

  654. has

  655. been

  656. described

  657. as a

  658. colourless

  659. character

  660. with no

  661. flash or

  662. dash and

  663. yet he

  664. was unique

  665. in the

  666. sense that

  667. he was the

  668. first of

  669. the twelve

  670. judges.

  671. Now there's

  672. a sense

  673. we all know

  674. in which

  675. we're all

  676. unique.

  677. The

  678. dictionary

  679. meaning of

  680. the word

  681. unique is

  682. to be

  683. single and

  684. kind having

  685. no like

  686. or equal.

  687. When God

  688. made each

  689. and every

  690. one of

  691. us he

  692. broke

  693. the

  694. mould we

  695. often say

  696. that.

  697. We're all

  698. unique in

  699. that sense

  700. but Othniel

  701. was also

  702. unique in

  703. the sense

  704. that he

  705. had no

  706. previous

  707. examples

  708. to follow

  709. no role

  710. model to

  711. give him

  712. his bearings

  713. as a

  714. judge.

  715. There were

  716. no guidelines

  717. laid down

  718. by those

  719. who had

  720. gone before

  721. because nobody

  722. had gone

  723. before.

  724. He was

  725. the first.

  726. pioneer

  727. if you

  728. like

  729. in his

  730. own

  731. field

  732. and that's

  733. never an

  734. easy slot

  735. to fill

  736. but he's

  737. God's

  738. man

  739. God

  740. raised them

  741. up

  742. he's

  743. God's

  744. man

  745. for the

  746. hour.

  747. Not

  748. everybody's

  749. type of

  750. ministry

  751. but it's

  752. got to be

  753. somebody's

  754. ministry

  755. to be

  756. the pioneer

  757. to be

  758. the trailblazer

  759. as a new

  760. need arises

  761. and a new

  762. ministry

  763. emerges

  764. as a new

  765. day dawns

  766. Othniel.

  767. Surely a

  768. privilege to

  769. be the

  770. first to

  771. do whatever

  772. it is

  773. that needs

  774. to be

  775. done.

  776. I think

  777. it's

  778. interesting

  779. to read

  780. that the

  781. Jewish

  782. rabbis

  783. were so

  784. impressed

  785. by Othniel

  786. that they

  787. spoke of

  788. him and

  789. they wrote

  790. of him

  791. as the

  792. first among

  793. the judges

  794. not only

  795. in a

  796. chronological

  797. sense but

  798. in a

  799. spiritual

  800. sense.

  801. Apart

  802. from his

  803. own

  804. God-given

  805. abilities

  806. I think

  807. there are

  808. a couple

  809. of things

  810. that

  811. contributed

  812. to his

  813. ministry

  814. being used

  815. by God

  816. and we

  817. can pick

  818. them up

  819. from the

  820. text.

  821. The Puritans

  822. would say

  823. let the

  824. text do

  825. the talking.

  826. What can

  827. we pick

  828. up from

  829. the narrative

  830. here?

  831. Well one

  832. thing we

  833. can pick

  834. up on

  835. was his

  836. previous

  837. experience.

  838. He had

  839. already proved

  840. himself to

  841. be a suitable

  842. material as

  843. a judge,

  844. as a

  845. saviour

  846. in Israel.

  847. He wasn't

  848. a saviour

  849. who would

  850. save people

  851. from their

  852. sins.

  853. That unique

  854. kind of

  855. saviour

  856. is still

  857. to come.

  858. But at

  859. least

  860. Othniel can

  861. be of

  862. great help

  863. to the

  864. people of

  865. his day.

  866. I cannot

  867. stress how

  868. important it

  869. is for all

  870. of us to

  871. first of all

  872. prove ourselves

  873. before we

  874. take on a

  875. leadership role.

  876. And that's

  877. what this man

  878. did.

  879. When God

  880. chooses to

  881. use a man

  882. at this

  883. level,

  884. it's because

  885. he's already

  886. proved his

  887. worth to a

  888. certain degree

  889. at another

  890. level.

  891. That was

  892. true of

  893. Othniel.

  894. How do

  895. you know?

  896. Well, Caleb,

  897. the great

  898. man of

  899. faith,

  900. a man who

  901. wholly

  902. followed the

  903. Lord,

  904. he had led

  905. the attack

  906. against the

  907. heart of

  908. Canaanite

  909. power at

  910. Hebron

  911. earlier,

  912. also known

  913. as Kiriath-Yarba,

  914. and God

  915. had given

  916. him a great

  917. victory.

  918. But there

  919. was another

  920. center of

  921. Canaanite power

  922. at a place

  923. called Debir,

  924. known as

  925. Kiriath-sephir,

  926. and Caleb

  927. had issued a

  928. challenge back

  929. in Judges 1

  930. and verse 12.

  931. Caleb said,

  932. I will give

  933. my daughter

  934. Aksa in

  935. marriage to

  936. the man who

  937. attacks and

  938. captures Kiriath-sephir.

  939. Othniel,

  940. son of

  941. Canaan,

  942. Caleb's younger

  943. brother,

  944. took it.

  945. So Caleb gave

  946. his daughter

  947. Aksa to

  948. him in

  949. marriage.

  950. Othniel

  951. was Caleb's

  952. nephew.

  953. He had

  954. earned his

  955. spurs

  956. sometime

  957. earlier

  958. on the

  959. field of

  960. battle.

  961. I don't

  962. know what

  963. age he

  964. would be

  965. probably

  966. in the

  967. 50s,

  968. Caleb in

  969. his 80s,

  970. the prelude

  971. to and the

  972. preparation for

  973. greater things.

  974. It's an

  975. elementary

  976. principle,

  977. isn't it?

  978. But an

  979. essential one

  980. that needs

  981. to be

  982. observed.

  983. If we're

  984. not proving

  985. ourselves in

  986. the work of

  987. God in

  988. smaller things,

  989. then we

  990. mustn't expect

  991. to be called

  992. in later life

  993. to do

  994. greater things.

  995. When it

  996. comes to

  997. leadership,

  998. you don't

  999. call people

  1000. to be

  1001. faithful,

  1002. you call

  1003. people who

  1004. are already

  1005. faithful.

  1006. And Othniel

  1007. was already

  1008. that kind of

  1009. man.

  1010. That was

  1011. his experience.

  1012. But of

  1013. course,

  1014. his previous

  1015. experience at

  1016. another level

  1017. was not in

  1018. and of

  1019. itself enough

  1020. for this

  1021. new venture.

  1022. there's also

  1023. his personal

  1024. empowering.

  1025. You can see

  1026. that in the

  1027. text.

  1028. So, no

  1029. matter what

  1030. the task

  1031. is, if

  1032. it's to

  1033. bring glory

  1034. to God

  1035. and not

  1036. ourselves,

  1037. if it's to

  1038. bring blessing

  1039. to others,

  1040. if it's to

  1041. thin the ranks

  1042. of the enemy

  1043. and result in

  1044. victory, it

  1045. will need to

  1046. be carried

  1047. out in the

  1048. power of

  1049. the Holy

  1050. Spirit.

  1051. And we

  1052. all need to

  1053. be reminded

  1054. of that,

  1055. although we

  1056. already know

  1057. it in our

  1058. heads.

  1059. I need to

  1060. be reminded

  1061. of it.

  1062. We did in

  1063. verse 10,

  1064. that the

  1065. Spirit of

  1066. the Lord

  1067. came upon

  1068. him, so

  1069. that he

  1070. became Israel's

  1071. judge and

  1072. he went to

  1073. war.

  1074. The Lord

  1075. gave

  1076. Cushan

  1077. Rishatham

  1078. king of

  1079. Aram into

  1080. the hands

  1081. of Othniel,

  1082. who overpowered

  1083. him, so the

  1084. land had

  1085. peace for

  1086. forty years,

  1087. until Othniel

  1088. son of

  1089. Canaz died.

  1090. It was that

  1091. touch from

  1092. God, that

  1093. rush of

  1094. the Spirit

  1095. coming upon

  1096. him, that

  1097. made all the

  1098. difference.

  1099. It was, call it

  1100. an anointing if

  1101. you like, it

  1102. was that

  1103. anointing that

  1104. made all the

  1105. difference.

  1106. It was the

  1107. empowering by

  1108. the Spirit that

  1109. brought transformation

  1110. not just on the

  1111. home front, but

  1112. in penetrating the

  1113. enemy's ranks.

  1114. I'm not saying

  1115. this is a second

  1116. blessing.

  1117. I'm simply

  1118. saying this man

  1119. went about his

  1120. God-given

  1121. ministry depending

  1122. on the Holy

  1123. Spirit.

  1124. Yes, he had

  1125. something in the

  1126. box of experience

  1127. he could draw on

  1128. from his earlier

  1129. days, but he

  1130. needed more than

  1131. that.

  1132. Every preacher,

  1133. every leader,

  1134. every child of

  1135. God engaged in

  1136. ministry of

  1137. any kind,

  1138. God.

  1139. No matter how

  1140. gifted and how

  1141. talented and

  1142. experienced they

  1143. may be, it

  1144. must always be not

  1145. by might, nor by

  1146. power, but by my

  1147. Spirit, says the

  1148. Lord.

  1149. The preaching of

  1150. orthodoxy, the

  1151. leading with great

  1152. skill, the

  1153. multiplication of

  1154. activities, absolutely

  1155. useless unless the

  1156. Holy Spirit sent

  1157. down from heaven

  1158. is our portion.

  1159. Now, I'm not

  1160. quoting John

  1161. Wimber here, I'm

  1162. quoting Professor

  1163. John Murray, who's

1164. at the other end of

  1165. the theological

  1166. spectrum because this

1167. lies at the heart of

  1168. historic reformed

  1169. theology.

  1170. We're back here to

  1171. the importance of the

1172. place of prayer in our

1173. lives and in the life

  1174. of the church, which

  1175. Al Martin once

  1176. referred to as the

  1177. conscious spreading

  1178. out of our

  1179. helplessness before

  1180. God.

  1181. You look at

  1182. Othniel.

  1183. Something in the

  1184. box of experience,

  1185. yes, but he needed

  1186. that anointing of

  1187. the Spirit.

  1188. Without him, we

  1189. can do nothing.

  1190. Therein lies the

  1191. strength of the

  1192. persecuted church in

1193. so many parts of the

  1194. world tonight.

  1195. Therein lies the

  1196. strength of any

  1197. church worthy of

  1198. the name.

  1199. Therein lies the

  1200. strength of Othniel,

  1201. the first judge.

  1202. Mr.

  1203. Unique.

  1204. But alas, it would

  1205. only be temporary

  1206. because you read

  1207. that he died.

  1208. So time moves on.

  1209. Life moves on.

  1210. And along comes

  1211. Ehud.

  1212. How shall we

  1213. describe him?

  1214. Mr.

  1215. Unusual.

  1216. Gordon

  1217. Keddie in his

  1218. commentary on

  1219. Judges suggests

  1220. that the story of

  1221. Ehud is the

  1222. stuff of which

  1223. swashbuckling

  1224. Hollywood movies

  1225. are made of.

  1226. That's how he

  1227. puts it.

  1228. A man can

  1229. change his

  1230. generation if

  1231. he's a man

  1232. entirely at God's

  1233. disposal.

  1234. But that same

  1235. man cannot

  1236. guarantee the

  1237. spirituality of

  1238. the next

  1239. generation.

  1240. The spiritual

  1241. tide ebbs and

  1242. flows.

  1243. After 40 years

  1244. of peace under

  1245. Othniel's

  1246. leadership, the

  1247. cycle of sin

  1248. returns as the

  1249. Israelites become

  1250. prayerless and

  1251. careless following

  1252. his death and

  1253. they begin to do

  1254. evil again in the

  1255. eyes of the Lord.

  1256. And in verse 12

  1257. we read of how

  1258. God dealt with

  1259. them.

  1260. It's interesting

  1261. when you read it.

  1262. Because they did

  1263. this evil, the

  1264. Lord gave Eglon,

  1265. king of Moab,

  1266. power over Israel.

  1267. You have to read

  1268. that sentence

  1269. twice.

  1270. Because they did

  1271. this evil, the

  1272. Lord gave Eglon,

  1273. king of Moab,

  1274. power over

  1275. Israel.

  1276. Getting the

  1277. Ammonites and

  1278. the Amalekites to

  1279. join him, Eglon

  1280. came and attacked

  1281. Israel.

  1282. They took possession

  1283. of the city of

  1284. Palms, Jericho.

  1285. The Israelites were

  1286. subject to Eglon,

  1287. king of Moab, for

  1288. 18 years.

  1289. Now you read that

  1290. and you immediately

  1291. come to the

  1292. conclusion that God's

  1293. in control.

  1294. He always is.

  1295. We read that it

  1296. was God who

  1297. handed Israel over

  1298. into the hands of

  1299. Eglon, king of

  1300. Moab.

  1301. It wasn't a fluke

  1302. incident.

  1303. It wasn't a freak

  1304. accident.

  1305. God raised up this

  1306. man, king of Moab,

  1307. actually strengthened

  1308. him so that he

  1309. would be in a

  1310. position of power

  1311. to actually inflict

  1312. damage on Israel,

  1313. his people.

  1314. And it took Israel

  1315. 18 long years

  1316. before they

  1317. eventually came to

  1318. their senses and

  1319. cried out to the

  1320. Lord.

  1321. And needless to say,

  1322. God heard their

  1323. cry, raised up

  1324. another deliverer,

  1325. another man he

  1326. could use, but a

  1327. man completely

  1328. different from

  1329. Othniel.

  1330. His name was

  1331. Ehud.

  1332. The etymology of

  1333. the word Ehud or

1334. Udea as it is for

  1335. short is unknown.

  1336. I called him Mr.

  1337. Unusual simply

  1338. because he was a

  1339. left-handed man.

  1340. No disrespect to

  1341. anybody here who

  1342. might be left-handed,

  1343. but he's unusual

  1344. because he's a

  1345. left-handed man and

  1346. he belongs to the

  1347. tribe of Benjamin,

  1348. which means son of

  1349. my right hand.

1350. Now, for any of us

  1351. to be left-handed

  1352. may mean nothing

  1353. more than to be

  1354. slightly different

  1355. from most other

  1356. people in how we

  1357. handle things.

  1358. Perhaps a little

  1359. awkward, especially

  1360. if you're looking to

  1361. borrow somebody

  1362. else's golf clubs.

  1363. It's not a

  1364. handicap or something

  1365. that puts limitations

  1366. on anyone.

  1367. But the meaning of

  1368. the word in Hebrew

  1369. carries with it a

  1370. sense of being

  1371. bound or hindered

  1372. in some way.

  1373. I also read

  1374. somewhere that the

  1375. word in Latin

  1376. actually means

  1377. sinister.

  1378. Now, we also

  1379. know that in those

  1380. days it was thought

  1381. by some as being

  1382. a defect.

  1383. We're not going to

  1384. go down that road,

1385. be that as it may.

  1386. It certainly made

  1387. Ehud because he was

  1388. a lefty.

  1389. It made him stand

  1390. out as being

  1391. markedly different

  1392. from others.

  1393. And that's why the

  1394. person who wrote

  1395. the narrative draws

  1396. our attention to it.

  1397. He never said when

  1398. he introduced

  1399. Othniel, he's a

  1400. right-handed man,

  1401. but when he's

  1402. introducing Ehud,

  1403. he tells us he's a

  1404. left-handed man, the

  1405. son of Gerard the

  1406. Benjamite.

  1407. He's a left-handed

1408. man in a world of

  1409. right-handed people.

  1410. He comes from the

  1411. tribe of Benjamin,

1412. as I've said, son of

  1413. my right hand.

  1414. And for that reason

  1415. alone, I call him

  1416. Mr. Unusual.

  1417. But God chose him.

  1418. And again, I would

  1419. like to mention just

  1420. a couple of things

  1421. from the text about

  1422. him.

  1423. When you read the

  1424. narrative, you come

  1425. to this conclusion,

  1426. Ehud was a faithful

  1427. man.

  1428. You read in the

  1429. book of Proverbs

    Proverbs 20:6

  1430. 20, verse 6,

  1431. many a man claims

  1432. to have unfailing

  1433. love, but a

  1434. faithful man, who

  1435. can find?

  1436. To be a faithful

1437. man is to belong to

  1438. a rare breed,

  1439. especially when the

  1440. spiritual tide is

  1441. out.

  1442. Anybody in

  1443. Christian leadership

  1444. would tell you,

  1445. give me a dozen

  1446. faithful people.

  1447. Makes all the

  1448. difference.

  1449. And yet, this is

  1450. the quality that

  1451. God looks for,

  1452. isn't it?

  1453. More than anything

  1454. else in a human

  1455. being.

  1456. This is the quality

  1457. he'll reward more

  1458. than anything else

  1459. on the last day.

  1460. I mean, let me

  1461. throw it out.

  1462. Is there anyone

  1463. here who doesn't

  1464. want to hear the

  1465. Lord say to them

  1466. when we render

  1467. our account,

  1468. well done, good

  1469. and faithful servant?

  1470. Enter into the

  1471. joy of your Lord?

  1472. Of course we want

  1473. to hear that.

  1474. Ehud was faithful

  1475. because he was a

  1476. man who not only

  1477. trusted God, he was

1478. a man who could be

  1479. trusted by God,

  1480. especially when it

  1481. came to money.

  1482. Don't miss that in

  1483. the passage.

  1484. Handling money.

  1485. No one in human

  1486. history has been

  1487. able to serve God

  1488. and money at one

  1489. and the same time.

  1490. It is absolutely

  1491. impossible to do

  1492. both.

  1493. I can say that

  1494. with confidence

  1495. because Jesus

  1496. said it.

  1497. It's got to be

  1498. the one or the

  1499. other.

  1500. Ehud was a man

  1501. who served God

  1502. in his day

  1503. and he was able

  1504. to handle money

  1505. wisely and

  1506. carefully.

  1507. We read in verse

  1508. 15 that the

  1509. Israelites sent him

  1510. with tribute

  1511. to Edwin,

  1512. king of Moab.

  1513. He's entrusted

  1514. with the task

  1515. of paying the

  1516. tax that was

  1517. due to this

  1518. overweight,

  1519. blubbery,

  1520. 20 stone plus

  1521. king.

  1522. Those who sent

  1523. him obviously

  1524. trusted him to

  1525. deliver the goods

  1526. without dipping

  1527. into the purse

  1528. as Judas did

  1529. in his day.

  1530. In that sense

  1531. he's similar

  1532. in caliber

  1533. to Othniel.

  1534. Clearly he's

  1535. proved his worth

  1536. to be given

  1537. such a task

  1538. in the first

  1539. place.

  1540. And as we look

  1541. into what

  1542. happened,

  1543. we need to be

  1544. careful.

  1545. We don't need

  1546. to allegorize

  1547. this.

  1548. We don't need

  1549. to typologize

  1550. it.

  1551. We don't need

  1552. to moralize

  1553. the story.

  1554. We don't need

  1555. to put any

  1556. spin on it.

  1557. The person

  1558. who wrote

  1559. this story,

  1560. he's not

  1561. embarrassed

  1562. in writing it.

  1563. If anything,

  1564. he enjoyed

  1565. writing it.

  1566. And it must

  1567. have been a

  1568. story often

  1569. told and

  1570. accompanied

  1571. with great

  1572. laughter

  1573. for years

  1574. to come

  1575. and many

  1576. in Israel

  1577. like home.

  1578. What happened

  1579. that day?

  1580. This man,

  1581. who was a

  1582. faithful man,

  1583. had a

  1584. pointed message.

  1585. He had a

  1586. pointed message

  1587. in more ways

  1588. than one.

  1589. You remember

  1590. when God

  1591. made Esther,

  1592. he made her

  1593. very beautiful

  1594. and it was

  1595. her beauty

  1596. that was

  1597. instrumental

  1598. in her

  1599. being in

  1600. the right

  1601. place at

  1602. the right

  1603. time.

  1604. when God's

  1605. people would

  1606. be in a

  1607. state of

  1608. crisis.

  1609. When God

  1610. made Ehud,

  1611. he made

  1612. him unusual,

  1613. if I can

  1614. allow you to

  1615. use that

  1616. term,

  1617. in terms of

  1618. being a

  1619. lefty in

  1620. a right

  1621. handed

  1622. world.

  1623. He chose

  1624. a left

  1625. handed man

  1626. to be the

  1627. man of

  1628. his right

  1629. hand and

  1630. it was

  1631. this that

  1632. won the

  1633. day.

  1634. It was

  1635. this unusual

  1636. feature

  1637. yielded to

  1638. God that

  1639. was instrumental

  1640. in defeating

  1641. the enemy

  1642. and in

  1643. delivering the

  1644. people of

  1645. God from

  1646. a tyrant.

  1647. Yes,

  1648. it took

  1649. courage for

  1650. Ehud to

  1651. do what

  1652. he did.

  1653. Yes,

  1654. he must

  1655. have thought

  1656. things through

  1657. carefully before

  1658. he did it,

  1659. but the

  1660. impact of

  1661. what he

  1662. did was

  1663. felt for

  1664. eighty

  1665. years.

  1666. Yes,

  1667. he was a

  1668. man of his

  1669. times and

  1670. we must

  1671. understand what

  1672. he did in

  1673. that context.

  1674. He was able

  1675. to salute the

  1676. king with

  1677. his right

  1678. hand without

  1679. making the

  1680. king sense

  1681. there was any

  1682. danger coming

  1683. from his

  1684. left hand.

  1685. Thus he

  1686. caught the

  1687. king off

  1688. guard when

  1689. he said,

  1690. I have a

  1691. secret message

  1692. for you,

  1693. O king.

  1694. And then

  1695. later when

  1696. he got the

  1697. king on

  1698. his own in

  1699. the upper

  1700. room of

  1701. his summer

  1702. palace,

  1703. I have a

  1704. message from

  1705. God for

  1706. you,

  1707. O king.

  1708. And it

  1709. was then he

  1710. delivered the

  1711. pointed message

  1712. in the form

  1713. of thrusting

  1714. what was

  1715. probably an

  1716. eighteen inch

  1717. dagger into

  1718. the king's

  1719. belly.

  1720. it says in

  1721. verse 22,

  1722. even the

  1723. handle sank

  1724. in after the

  1725. blade which

  1726. came out of

  1727. his back.

  1728. Ehud did

  1729. not pull the

  1730. sword out and

  1731. the fat closed

  1732. in over it.

  1733. And so he

  1734. walked out the

  1735. room, shut

  1736. the doors behind

  1737. him, locked

  1738. them, left

  1739. the king's

  1740. servants to

  1741. wonder for a

  1742. while as to

  1743. what was going

  1744. on while

  1745. Ehud made

  1746. his getaway.

  1747. Now,

  1748. brothers and

  1749. sisters,

  1750. it's a long

  1751. time ago.

  1752. But there

  1753. are principles

  1754. here.

  1755. There are

  1756. bits and

  1757. pieces in

  1758. all of our

  1759. lives that

  1760. make you

  1761. and me

  1762. tonight unique.

  1763. And perhaps

  1764. some of it is

  1765. even unusual.

  1766. Sometimes we

  1767. lament over

  1768. these things,

  1769. we forget that

  1770. this is the

  1771. way God

  1772. has put us

  1773. together in

  1774. our mother's

  1775. womb for

  1776. his eternal

  1777. glory.

  1778. We excuse

  1779. ourselves

  1780. sometimes from

  1781. being useful

  1782. and usable

  1783. instead of

  1784. offering ourselves

  1785. just as we

  1786. are to the

  1787. Lord, making

  1788. our mark on

  1789. the sands of

  1790. time before

  1791. it is forever

  1792. too late.

  1793. Even in dark

  1794. days when

  1795. everyone was

  1796. doing what

  1797. was right in

  1798. their own

  1799. eyes, God

  1800. was at work

  1801. during the

  1802. period of the

  1803. judges.

  1804. I said there

  1805. were three

  1806. Mr.

  1807. Men in

  1808. chapter 3,

  1809. Mr.

  1810. Unique,

  1811. Mr.

  1812. Unusual,

  1813. and finally

  1814. Mr.

  1815. Unknown,

  1816. Shamgar.

  1817. I wonder

  1818. if you were

  1819. the preacher

  1820. tonight,

  1821. what would

  1822. you say

  1823. in Shamgar?

  1824. He appears

  1825. at the end

  1826. of the

  1827. chapter in

  1828. one verse.

  1829. He comes

  1830. in between

  1831. Ehud and

  1832. Deborah in

  1833. the next

  1834. chapter,

  1835. as someone

  1836. has said,

  1837. just like an

  1838. advert in

  1839. television,

  1840. between two

  1841. interesting and

  1842. exciting

  1843. programs.

  1844. The story of

  1845. Ehud,

  1846. that's exciting.

  1847. The story of

  1848. Deborah,

  1849. wow, that's

  1850. exciting too.

  1851. But Shamgar?

  1852. He's only

  1853. referred to

  1854. in this one

  1855. verse,

  1856. chapter 3,

  1857. verse 31,

  1858. but what a

  1859. significant

  1860. mention.

  1861. Even though

  1862. some commentators

  1863. have little

  1864. or nothing

  1865. to say about

  1866. him,

  1867. they pass

  1868. him by.

  1869. It says,

  1870. after Ehud

  1871. came Shamgar,

  1872. son of Anath,

  1873. who struck

  1874. down 600

  1875. Philistines

  1876. with an ox

  1877. goat,

  1878. he too

  1879. saved Israel.

  1880. Not bad

  1881. for a one

  1882. line-up.

  1883. He's also

  1884. mentioned later

  1885. in the Song

  1886. of Deborah,

  1887. chapter 5,

  1888. verse 6,

  1889. where we read,

  1890. in the days

  1891. of Shamgar,

  1892. son of Anath,

  1893. in the days

  1894. of Jael,

  1895. the roads

  1896. were abandoned,

  1897. travelers took

  1898. to winding

  1899. paths.

  1900. Now,

  1901. you take

  1902. those two

  1903. little snippets

  1904. of truth,

  1905. and you come

  1906. out with the

  1907. conclusion that

  1908. life was

  1909. difficult and

  1910. life was

  1911. dangerous in

  1912. those days.

  1913. And Shamgar,

  1914. he doesn't

  1915. come onto the

  1916. stage of

  1917. Israelite history

  1918. with a fanfare

  1919. of trumpets.

  1920. We know

  1921. very little

  1922. about him.

  1923. Paul,

  1924. Saint Paul,

  1925. Augustine,

  1926. Saint Augustine,

  1927. Columba,

  1928. Saint Columba,

  1929. Shamgar,

  1930. Saint Shamgar,

  1931. he's an unknown

  1932. quantity.

  1933. His life is

  1934. summed up in

  1935. the briefest of

  1936. comments.

  1937. But he was a

  1938. legend in his

  1939. day.

  1940. Some time ago,

  1941. I read a book

  1942. called The

  1943. Elect Lady.

  1944. It was on

  1945. Selina,

  1946. the Countess of

  1947. Huntington.

  1948. Some of you may

  1949. have read it.

  1950. She was an

  1951. aristocrat.

  1952. She was able

  1953. to support men

  1954. like George

  1955. Whitfield and

  1956. John Charles

  1957. Wesley.

  1958. In their day,

  1959. other great

  1960. evangelical preachers

  1961. in the 18th

  1962. century,

  1963. Howe Harris

  1964. in Wales.

  1965. She moved

  1966. in high

  1967. society as

  1968. an aristocratic

  1969. ambassador for

  1970. the Lord Jesus.

  1971. In Paul's

  1972. letter to the

  1973. Corinthians,

  1974. remember what

  1975. he said?

  1976. He said,

  1977. brothers,

  1978. think of what

  1979. you were

  1980. when you

  1981. were called.

  1982. Not many

  1983. of you were

  1984. wise by

  1985. human standards.

  1986. Not many

  1987. were influential.

  1988. Not many

  1989. were of

  1990. noble birth,

  1991. but God

  1992. chose the

  1993. foolish things

  1994. of the world

  1995. to shame

  1996. the wise.

  1997. God chose

  1998. what's weak

  1999. in the world

  2000. to shame

  2001. the strong.

  2002. God chose

  2003. what's low

  2004. and despised

  2005. in the world,

  2006. even things

  2007. that are not

  2008. to bring

  2009. to nothing

  2010. things that

  2011. are.

  2012. Selina,

  2013. the elect lady

  2014. of the

  2015. Countess of

  2016. Huntingdon,

  2017. she used to

  2018. say she was

  2019. grateful for

  2020. the letter

  2021. M in the

  2022. word many

  2023. in that

  2024. passage.

  2025. if it had

  2026. said not

  2027. any,

  2028. not any

  2029. wise,

  2030. not any

  2031. influential,

  2032. she would

  2033. have been

  2034. left out.

  2035. She was

  2036. an aristocrat.

  2037. I don't

  2038. know that

  2039. there are

  2040. any aristocrats

  2041. here.

  2042. Most of us

  2043. are very

  2044. ordinary

  2045. creatures.

  2046. Came from

  2047. a background

  2048. of relative

  2049. obscurity in

  2050. the world.

  2051. My father

  2052. was a coal

  2053. miner.

  2054. His father

  2055. was a coal

  2056. miner.

  2057. And his

  2058. father before

  2059. him was a

  2060. coal miner.

  2061. I come

  2062. from a wee

  2063. village in

  2064. the west

  2065. of Scotland,

  2066. New York

  2067. Hill.

  2068. It's a dump.

  2069. Forgive me

  2070. for saying

  2071. it.

  2072. There's

  2073. nothing in

  2074. it.

  2075. I think

  2076. Shamgar was

  2077. a wee bit

  2078. like that.

  2079. Nothing

  2080. exceptional in

  2081. his breeding,

  2082. but God

  2083. used him

  2084. mightily.

  2085. He slew

  2086. 600

  2087. Philistines

  2088. with an

  2089. ox goad.

  2090. Now we're

  2091. not told if

  2092. he did it

  2093. all on his

  2094. own or was

  2095. it as a

  2096. leader with

  2097. the help

  2098. of others.

  2099. You know

  2100. it says

  2101. sometimes in

  2102. the Bible

  2103. David slew

  2104. the Philistines

  2105. but it

  2106. was David

  2107. with the

  2108. army behind

  2109. him.

  2110. Well was

  2111. it here

  2112. that Shamgar

  2113. had men

  2114. behind him

  2115. when he

  2116. did this?

  2117. I don't

  2118. know.

  2119. I don't

  2120. know.

  2121. All I

  2122. know is

  2123. a

  2124. ox goad

  2125. was a

  2126. wooden

  2127. stick that

  2128. could be

  2129. as long

  2130. as eight

  2131. feet long

  2132. with a

  2133. sharp metal

  2134. point at

  2135. one end

  2136. for driving

  2137. the ox

  2138. and a

  2139. blade at

  2140. the other

  2141. end for

  2142. cleaning

  2143. the plough

  2144. and yet

  2145. he put

  2146. to death

  2147. all these

  2148. Philistines.

  2149. That was

  2150. all he

  2151. had.

  2152. Just a

  2153. couple of

  2154. things about

  2155. him.

  2156. It would

  2157. appear that

  2158. this man

  2159. came out

  2160. of paganism.

  2161. It's easy

  2162. to miss that

  2163. point but

  2164. Shamgar is

  2165. probably not a

  2166. Hebrew name

  2167. at all.

  2168. You check the

  2169. commentators.

  2170. It is in all

  2171. probability a

  2172. Canaanite name

  2173. just as his

  2174. father

  2175. Anath

  2176. is the name

  2177. of a

  2178. Canaanite god

  2179. of sex

  2180. and war.

  2181. Now that's a

  2182. guess

  2183. although it

  2184. may go down

  2185. as an

  2186. educated

  2187. guess

  2188. we have a

  2189. problem in

  2190. that from a

  2191. family lineage

  2192. perspective

  2193. we don't

  2194. know if he

  2195. ever had any

  2196. Israelite roots

  2197. this man.

  2198. God seems

  2199. to have

  2200. dug him

  2201. out of the

  2202. pit of

  2203. raw paganism

  2204. to enlist him

  2205. into his

  2206. royal service.

  2207. The name

  2208. Shamgar

  2209. unknown in

  2210. Israel until

  2211. this moment

  2212. in history.

  2213. He comes

  2214. out it

  2215. probably is

  2216. true he

  2217. comes out

  2218. out of

  2219. paganism but

  2220. and he also

  2221. stands out as

  2222. being a

  2223. peasant.

  2224. His weapon

  2225. tells us he's

  2226. something of a

  2227. country yokel

  2228. and yet he

  2229. saved Israel

  2230. from their

  2231. enemies.

  2232. Shamgar was

  2233. later written

  2234. into the

  2235. annals of

  2236. their history

  2237. as a hero

  2238. his name

  2239. being mentioned

  2240. in the lyrics

  2241. of a song

  2242. by those who

  2243. came later.

  2244. Shamgar

  2245. what else

  2246. can I say

  2247. I don't

  2248. know what

  2249. else to

  2250. say about

  2251. these things.

  2252. Let me

  2253. just say

  2254. this we're

  2255. all unique

  2256. in some

  2257. respects.

  2258. Tonight we're

  2259. all unusual

  2260. in many

  2261. ways and

  2262. we are all

  2263. without exception

  2264. in the category

  2265. of being

  2266. known as

  2267. unknown as

  2268. far as this

  2269. world is

  2270. concerned.

  2271. But do not

  2272. forget tonight

  2273. that God

  2274. knows you.

  2275. He loves

  2276. you.

  2277. Look what

  2278. He's done

  2279. for you

  2280. in Christ

  2281. and what

  2282. He's been

  2283. doing for

  2284. you, many

  2285. of you,

  2286. for decades.

  2287. When I was

  2288. in Burma,

  2289. Myanmar as

  2290. it's called

  2291. today, with

  2292. Martin

  2293. Dudgeon from

  2294. Asia Link,

  2295. we had a

  2296. couple of

  2297. hours free

  2298. when we were

  2299. in Rangoon,

  2300. Yangon, the

  2301. capital city,

  2302. and we

  2303. decided to

  2304. visit the

  2305. cemetery on

  2306. the outskirts

  2307. of the city

  2308. where we

  2309. knew that

  2310. hundreds and

  2311. hundreds of

  2312. British soldiers

  2313. had been

  2314. laid to rest,

  2315. men who

  2316. fell in the

  2317. Burmese

  2318. War.

  2319. Most of

  2320. them were in

  2321. their late

  2322. teens or

  2323. their early

  2324. twenties.

  2325. It was quite

  2326. something just

  2327. to grave

  2328. after grave,

  2329. headstone

  2330. after headstone,

  2331. 19 years of

  2332. age, 21

  2333. years of age,

  2334. 18 years of

  2335. age, 22

  2336. years of age,

  2337. right along

  2338. the line,

  2339. line after

  2340. line.

  2341. We walked

  2342. up and

  2343. down, row

  2344. after row

  2345. of graves.

  2346. The headstone

  2347. would tell us

  2348. what regiment

  2349. they fought

  2350. with, how

  2351. old they

  2352. were, but

  2353. we came to

  2354. a grave

  2355. where it

  2356. just simply

  2357. said,

  2358. unknown

  2359. soldier.

  2360. And Martin

  2361. turned to

  2362. me, and

  2363. he said to

  2364. me, he

  2365. said,

  2366. John, he

  2367. says,

  2368. there are

  2369. many unknown

  2370. soldiers in

  2371. the Lord's

  2372. army.

  2373. Very few

  2374. people, if

  2375. any, know

  2376. who they

  2377. are.

  2378. beyond the

  2379. place where

  2380. they live,

  2381. but God

  2382. knows who

  2383. they are.

  2384. I just

  2385. want to say

  2386. to you

  2387. tonight,

  2388. whatever age

  2389. you're at,

  2390. whatever stage

  2391. you're at,

  2392. I just want

  2393. to say to

  2394. you, if

  2395. you are

  2396. one of

  2397. his unknown

  2398. children,

  2399. God can

  2400. take you

  2401. up and

  2402. use you

  2403. for his

  2404. glory.

  2405. If you'll

  2406. but place

  2407. at his

  2408. disposal all

  2409. that you

  2410. are and

  2411. all that

  2412. you have,

  2413. no matter

  2414. how little

  2415. it may

  2416. be.

  2417. I speak

  2418. to those

  2419. of you

  2420. who are

  2421. my age,

  2422. mid-70s,

  2423. you think

  2424. it's all

  2425. over?

  2426. No, it's

  2427. not.

  2428. You've got

  2429. to go on

  2430. until you

  2431. breast the

  2432. tape.

  2433. You've got

  2434. to be

  2435. faithful unto

  2436. death,

  2437. and he

  2438. will give

  2439. you the

  2440. crown of

  2441. life.

  2442. It's not

  2443. about how

  2444. much we

  2445. have,

  2446. it's what

  2447. we do

  2448. with what

  2449. we have

  2450. that counts,

  2451. no matter

  2452. how little

  2453. it may be.

  2454. And that's

  2455. the challenge

  2456. of this

  2457. chapter, I

  2458. think, and

  2459. in particular,

  2460. the man at

  2461. the end of

  2462. the chapter,

  2463. but the other

  2464. two as

  2465. well.

  2466. Put them

  2467. all together.

  2468. You know,

  2469. it was D.L.

  2470. Moody who

  2471. once said,

  2472. the world

  2473. has yet to

  2474. see what

  2475. God can

  2476. do with

  2477. one man

  2478. fully yielded

  2479. to him,

  2480. and by the

  2481. grace of

  2482. God, I

  2483. intend to

  2484. be that

  2485. man.

  2486. Now, God

  2487. doesn't want

  2488. you to be

  2489. Othniel,

  2490. and he

  2491. doesn't want

  2492. you to be

  2493. a lefty

  2494. like Ehud,

  2495. and he

  2496. doesn't want

  2497. you to be

  2498. Shamgar,

  2499. he wants

  2500. you to be

  2501. you,

  2502. in your

  2503. generation,

  2504. me and

  2505. my generation,

  2506. living for

  2507. his glory.

  2508. Mr.

  2509. Unique,

  2510. Mr.

  2511. Unusual,

  2512. Mr.

  2513. Unknown,

  2514. but God

  2515. has got his

  2516. hand on you,

  2517. and he

  2518. wants to

  2519. use you

  2520. with every

  2521. breath you've

  2522. got in your

  2523. body,

  2524. until he

  2525. calls you

  2526. home.

  2527. Father in

  2528. heaven,

  2529. we thank

  2530. you for

  2531. your word,

  2532. we thank

  2533. you for

  2534. these men

  2535. who lived

  2536. so long

  2537. ago,

  2538. in a

  2539. completely

  2540. different

  2541. world from

  2542. the world

  2543. we live

  2544. in,

  2545. we thank

  2546. you that

  2547. you raised

  2548. them up,

  2549. you shaped

  2550. them,

  2551. you equipped

  2552. them,

  2553. and you

  2554. used them

  2555. for the

  2556. extension of

  2557. your kingdom,

  2558. for the

  2559. blessing of

  2560. your people,

  2561. for the

  2562. glory of

  2563. your great

  2564. name.

  2565. Help us

  2566. to feel

  2567. tonight,

  2568. to know

  2569. tonight,

  2570. that in

  2571. some small

  2572. way,

  2573. we can be

  2574. in the

  2575. same train

  2576. that they

  2577. are in.

  2578. and we

  2579. pray this

  2580. in Jesus'

  2581. name.

  2582. Amen.

  2583. Amen.

  2584. OK.

  2585. Thank you.
