  1. Good evening. It's a pleasure to be with you tonight. This is the first time I've been in Brunsfield Evangelical Church, so thank you very much for your welcome this evening.

  2. I also find it a little bit daunting being here. Jonathan Gemmell came on several occasions to speak at ETS, where I teach.

  3. I know Graham Shanks fairly well from ETS as well, so I know the standard of preaching that you're used to, so it's daunting for me to be here.

  4. Also, Judges isn't an easy book, is it? We've already heard about J.L. and her tent peg, so it is daunting coming here.

  5. But I trust that, as God's Word has preached to us, that He'll bless us through it.

  6. The account of Deborah and Barak is unique in Judges in that we get it two times.

  7. There's a story and then a song, so the first part of it in Chapter 4 has already been read to us.

  8. As I begin tonight, I'd like to read the second part, which is the song. I'm not going to attempt to sing it. You'll be relieved.

  9. It's Chapter 5. So as we begin, we'll read God's Word again.

  10. On that day, Deborah and Barak, son of Abinahim, sang this song.

  11. When the princes in Israel take the lead, when the people willingly offer themselves, praise the Lord.

  12. Hear this, you kings. Listen, you rulers.

  13. I will sing to the Lord. I will sing.

  14. I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel.

  15. O Lord, when you went out from Zer, when you marched from the land of Edom, the earth shook.

  16. The heavens poured, the clouds poured down water.

  17. The mountains quaked before the Lord, the one of Sinai.

  18. Before the Lord, the God of Israel.

  19. In the days of Shamgar, son of Anat, in the days of Jael, the roads were abandoned.

  20. Travelers took to winding paths.

  21. Village life in Israel ceased.

  22. Ceased until I, Deborah, arose.

  23. Arose as a mother in Israel.

  24. When they chose new gods, war came to the city gates.

  25. Not a shield or spear was seen among the forty thousand in Israel.

  26. My heart is with Israel's princes, with the willing volunteers among the people.

  27. Praise the Lord.

  28. You who ride on white donkeys sitting on your saddled blankets, and you who walk along the road,

  29. consider the voice of the singers at the watering places.

  30. They recite the righteous acts of the Lord, the righteous acts of his warriors in Israel.

  31. Then the people of the Lord went down to the city gates.

  32. Wake up, wake up, Deborah.

  33. Wake up, wake up.

  34. Break out in song.

  35. Arise, O Barak.

  36. Take captive your captives, O son of Abinoam.

  37. Then the men who were left came down to the nobles.

  38. The people of the Lord came to me with the mighty.

  39. Some came from Ephraim, whose roots were in Amalek.

  40. Benjamin was with the people who followed you.

  41. From Makar, captains came down.

  42. From Zebulun, those who bear a commander's staff.

  43. The princes of Issachar were with Deborah.

  44. Yes, Issachar was with Barak, rushing after him into the valley.

  45. In the districts of Reuben, there was much searching of heart.

  46. Why did you stay among the campfires to hear the whistling for the flocks?

  47. In the districts of Reuben, there was much searching of heart.

  48. Gillian stayed beyond the Jordan.

  49. And Dan, why did he linger by the ships?

  50. Asher remained on the coast and stayed in his coves.

  51. The people of Zebulun risked their very lives.

  52. So did Naphtali on the heights of the field.

  53. Kings came.

  54. They fought.

  55. The kings of Canaan fought at Tanakh by the waters of Megiddo.

  56. But they carried off no silver and no plunder.

  57. From the heavens, the stars fought.

  58. From their courses, they fought against Sisera.

  59. The river Kishon swept them away.

  60. The age-old river, the river Kishon.

  61. March on, my soul, be strong.

  62. Then thundered the horses' hooves.

  63. Galloping, galloping, go his mighty steeds.

  64. Curse Meroz, says the angel of the Lord.

  65. Curse its people bitterly, because they did not come to help the Lord.

  66. To help the Lord against the mighty.

  67. Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite.

  68. Most blessed of tent-dwelling women.

  69. He asked for water and she gave him milk.

  70. In a bowl fit for noble, she brought him curdled milk.

  71. Her hand reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman's hammer.

  72. She struck Sisera.

  73. She crushed his head.

  74. She shattered and pierced his temple.

  75. At her feet he sank.

  76. He fell, there he lay.

  77. At her feet he sank, he fell.

  78. Where he sank, there he fell, dead.

  79. Through the window peered Sisera's mother.

  80. Behind the lattice she cried out,

  81. Why is his chariot so long in coming?

  82. Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?

  83. The wisest of her ladies answered her.

  84. Indeed, she keeps saying to herself,

  85. Are they not finding and dividing the spoils?

  86. A girl or two for each man.

  87. Colorful garments is plunder for Sisera.

  88. Colorful garments embroidered.

  89. Highly embroidered garments for my neck.

  90. All this is plunder.

  91. So may all your enemies perish, O Lord.

  92. But may they who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.

  93. Then the land had peace for forty years.

  94. May God bless his word.

  95. As we begin tonight, I'd like to begin with a question.

  96. And it's a rhetorical question.

  97. I'm telling you that so you know that you're not expecting you to answer.

  98. It's quite a personal question.

  99. In the free church I don't need to explain that

  100. because if I ask a question nobody's going to answer.

  101. But just in case you might feel that I'm expecting you to answer, I'm not.

  102. What's the biggest problem that you face?

  103. What's the biggest issue in your life?

  104. To put it slightly differently, what's most important to you?

  105. To help us answer that kind of question,

  106. when you get up in the morning, what's the first thing that you think about?

  107. Maybe when you're going to bed at night, is you lying there in your bed?

  108. What is it that turns round and round in your mind?

  109. For each of us, that's quite a personal question.

  110. If we were to make it slightly less personal,

  111. if we keep that question in the back of our mind,

  112. but if we make it slightly less personal,

  113. in this passage, in Judges chapter 4,

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  114. what's the biggest problem that the Israelites faced?

  115. The narrator has an opinion about that as he tells the story, doesn't he?

  116. But if you were to actually ask the Israelites,

  117. what's your biggest problem?

  118. We get a sense of that in verse 3, don't we?

  119. It's talking there about Sisera,

  120. this man who was the commander of their enemy's army,

  121. and tells us that because Sisera had 900 iron chariots

  122. and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for 20 years,

  123. they cried to the Lord for help.

  124. There's a bit of irony in that, isn't there?

  125. It took 20 years for them to cry out to the Lord.

  126. But if you were to ask the Israelites,

  127. what's your biggest problem?

  128. What would they answer?

  129. Sisera.

  130. Sisera and his 900 chariots and his 20 years of oppression.

  131. That's, I think, what they would say was their biggest problem.

  132. But as we look at the way this story is recorded for us in the Bible,

  133. we see that the author of it is wanting us to recognize

  134. that that's not their biggest problem.

  135. What's a problem?

  136. There's actually only a symptom.

  137. Their bigger problem was different than that, wasn't it?

  138. In verse 1,

  139. After Ehud died,

  140. the Israelites once again did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  141. So the Lord sold them into the hands of Jabin,

  142. a king of Canaan,

  143. who reigned in Hazor.

  144. Their problem was not Jabin,

  145. or his commander Sisera.

  146. Their problem was themselves.

  147. Their problem was the fact that they had rejected God.

  148. Now, often,

  149. in our day,

  150. if you saw people who were being oppressed like that,

  151. we would view them rightly as being innocent victims.

  152. But in the narrative,

  153. we discovered that the Israelites were not innocent victims.

  154. The troubles that they were going through

  155. were troubles that they had made for themselves

  156. because of their rejection of God.

  157. Their biggest problem was one of allegiance,

  158. or loyalty.

  159. Their biggest problem was a lack of allegiance to God,

  160. a lack of loyalty to God.

  161. Now, it's not just at the beginning of this account

  162. that that issue of allegiance arises, is it?

  163. We look at verse 11.

  164. The first time you read through the story,

  165. verse 11 stands out as being rather strange, doesn't it?

  166. It's as if the story is interrupted

  167. and we're given this seemingly superfluous detail.

  168. Now, Haber, the Kenite,

  169. had left the other Kenites,

  170. the descendants of Hobab,

  171. Moses' father-in-law,

  172. and pitched his tent near the great tree

  173. in Za'ananim,

  174. near Kadesh.

  175. What's the point of that?

  176. Why does the author bother telling us about Haber?

  177. Well, it's partly because of his wife, Jael,

  178. who becomes significant later on in the story.

  179. But if you look at verse 17,

  180. we read what it meant that Haber

  181. had decided to leave his family and move.

  182. In verse 17, we're told that Cisera, however,

  183. fled on foot to the tent of jail,

  184. the wife of Heber the Kenite.

  185. This is why we're told about him now.

  186. Because there were friendly relations

  187. between Jabin, king of Hazor,

  188. and the clan of Heber the Kenite.

  189. Do you see what Heber was doing?

  190. Back in verse 11,

  191. when it says he left his relatives and he moved.

  192. Heber moved because he was changing sides.

  193. To be very simplistic,

  194. in the Old Testament,

  195. you could divide people into two groups.

  196. There were those people who were for God

  197. and those people who were against God.

  198. And in the middle,

  199. we have the Kenites,

  200. Hobab and his descendants.

  201. Now, Hobab,

  202. he was connected to Moses by marriage.

  203. He and his people had seen

  204. what God had done for the Israelites.

  205. And they had said to themselves,

  206. the God of the Israelites is the true God.

  207. And so they had cast their lot with the Israelites.

  208. They had recognized that the God of Israel

  209. was the true God.

  210. And so in chapter 1 of the book of Judges,

  211. in verse 16,

  212. we're told that the descendants of Moses' father-in-law,

  213. the Kenites went up from the city of Palms

  214. with the men of Judah

  215. to live among the people

  216. of the desert of Judah in the Negev.

  217. They had made the right choice.

  218. They had sided with God.

  219. Now, if Heber is moving,

  220. if he's leaving his family

  221. and he's siding with Jabin

  222. and his wicked, violent regime,

  223. it's not merely that Heber is leaving his family,

  224. He's forsaking God.

  225. He's going in the wrong direction.

  226. And this issue of allegiance,

  227. we see it not just in the beginning,

  228. not just in the middle.

  229. If you look at the very end of the account,

  230. in chapter 5,

  231. if you want to know what a passage in the Bible is about,

  232. often it's instructive to look at the end of it.

  233. And at the end of this account,

  234. in verse 31, chapter 5, 31,

  235. we read,

  236. So may all your enemies perish, O Lord,

  237. but may those who love you

  238. be like the sun when it rises in its strength.

  239. There's two groups of people there, aren't there?

  240. There are those who are God's enemies

  241. and those who have sided with God,

  242. those who love God.

  243. Two different groups of people.

  244. And this issue of allegiance comes up,

  245. this issue of loyalty.

  246. So, if we can become personal again,

  247. I began by asking you,

  248. what's your greatest problem?

  249. Perhaps it's not a problem,

  250. we could think more generally,

  251. what's the greatest issue in your life?

  252. Well, through this passage,

  253. God is calling each one of us to recognize

  254. that He ought to be the most important,

  255. the most significant thing in our lives.

  256. And so the question for us is to ask ourselves,

  257. how important is God to me?

  258. Or if we think of Heber,

  259. which direction are you going?

  260. Do you find that you're going towards God?

  261. Or do you find that you're going away from Him?

  262. Now, many of you here tonight,

  263. maybe you have taken a decision about that.

  264. Maybe for some of you,

  265. these things are new to you,

  266. and you're still wrestling with that.

  267. But this is the point this passage is driving home.

  268. There is nothing more important for us to know

  269. than the God who created us.

  270. Now, if this passage is seeking to convince us,

  271. if God is telling us through this passage,

  272. that He is the most important thing,

  273. or that He ought to be the most important thing in our lives,

  274. that allegiance to Him is the most important thing,

  275. we might ask, why?

  276. Why?

  277. Why should Deborah and Barak and Jael,

  278. why should all of these people,

  279. on what grounds did God have to expect them to side with Him?

  280. Couldn't have been an easy decision for Jael

  281. to take a side with the God of Israel, could it?

  282. Why should they take this decision?

  283. I would suggest that as we look at this passage,

  284. that there are at least two reasons that are given here

  285. as to why they should have sided with the God of Israel.

  286. Two reasons why you ought to side with God,

  287. why you ought to follow the Lord Jesus.

  288. First of all, God has made Himself known,

  289. and secondly, God is victorious.

  290. So first of all, God makes Himself known.

  291. Now, if God were difficult to know,

  292. if God were hidden,

  293. it would have been unfair to expect Barak to side with Him,

  294. wouldn't it?

  295. It would be unfair to expect Jael to side with the God of Israel.

  296. But the fact is that God isn't unknown to them.

  297. If you look with me at verse 6,

  298. in the NIV, now this is talking about Deborah,

  299. the Israelites are being oppressed.

  300. In chapter 4, verse 6, Deborah sends for Barak,

  301. who's going to be their military leader.

  302. He's going to be their champion.

  303. In verse 6,

  304. Deborah sent for Barak, son of Abinuam,

  305. from Kadesh and Naphtali,

  306. and said to him,

  307. The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you,

  308. go, take with you 10,000 men.

  309. Now, as we read that in the NIV,

  310. we would get the impression

  311. that this is the first time that Barak has heard anything about this.

  312. I don't know if any of you have different translations.

  313. In the ESV, it translates it rather differently.

  314. She sent and summoned Barak, son of Abinuam,

  315. from Kadesh and Naphtali,

  316. and said to him,

  317. Has not the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded you,

  318. go and gather your men?

  319. Now, in the language that it's originally written in,

  320. that is a more direct translation,

  321. Deborah does, in fact, present him with a question.

  322. Hasn't God commanded you to do that?

  323. Now, some people suggest

  324. that that was just a way of emphasizing the truthfulness

  325. that the surely God has commanded you,

  326. and that's why the NIV translates it this way.

  327. I think it's more natural to take it as an actual question.

  328. Now, a question like that is implying something.

  329. If you say,

  330. Hasn't God told you this?

  331. Well, that implies you're going to answer yes.

  332. But if Barak has to answer yes to this question,

  333. it implies that God had already told him to do this,

  334. and he hadn't done it.

  335. That means that Barak's problems start not in verse 7,

  336. sorry, in verse 8.

  337. As we read through the account,

  338. we get to verse 8,

  339. and Barak says to her,

  340. If you go with me, I'll go.

  341. But if you don't go with me, I won't go.

  342. Barak's name in Hebrew actually means lightning.

  343. Barak doesn't respond with very lightning-like speed

  344. to God's directions to him, does he?

  345. But if this is true,

  346. it means that his problems didn't start in verse 8,

  347. when he says that he won't go unless Deborah goes with him.

  348. Actually, his problems had already started before this,

  349. when God had told him to go,

  350. and he did nothing.

  351. But for just now,

  352. our point in looking at this

  353. is that God had made himself known to Barak.

  354. Now, the good news for us

  355. is that God isn't hidden from us.

  356. If God were hidden,

  357. if he were distant,

  358. if it were difficult to know God,

  359. we might think it was unfair of him

  360. to expect us to know him.

  361. But the fact is that God has spoken to us.

  362. God speaks to us in lots of different ways.

  363. Most clearly,

  364. God has spoken to us through Jesus.

  365. So, for example, in Hebrews,

  366. in the New Testament,

  367. we read that in the past,

  368. God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets

  369. at many times and in various ways.

  370. But in these last days,

  371. he has spoken to us by his Son.

  372. That's Jesus.

  373. If you want to know God,

  374. you can.

  375. Because God is speaking to you.

  376. God spoke to Barak

  377. in various different ways,

  378. not least through Deborah.

  379. God is speaking to us

  380. through his Son,

  381. through Jesus.

  382. And that's why the Bible is so important to us,

  383. isn't it?

  384. Because it is pre-eminently this book

  385. that tells us about Jesus.

  386. So this book is about, isn't it,

  387. what God has done for us

  388. through the Lord Jesus.

  389. So first of all,

  390. the reason that we should side with God

  391. is because he is a God

  392. who has made himself known to us.

  393. He speaks to us.

  394. Secondly, as we look at this passage,

  395. we're confronted with the fact

  396. that the God of Israel

  397. is victorious.

  398. It's important that we know him.

  399. It's important that we side with him

  400. because he wins.

  401. Now, as we look at this passage,

  402. we see God's victory in two different ways.

  403. We see that God is victorious in judgment.

  404. And then secondly,

  405. we see that God is victorious in salvation.

  406. So first of all,

  407. God is victorious in judgment.

  408. Now, this takes us to Jael.

  409. In verse 22 of chapter 4,

  410. at the very end of that,

  411. we read that

  412. Barak went in with Jael,

  413. and there lay Sisera

  414. with the tent peg

  415. through his temple,

  416. dead.

  417. On that day,

  418. God subdued Jabin,

  419. the Canaanite king,

  420. before the Israelites.

  421. And the hand of the Israelites

  422. grew stronger and stronger

  423. against Jabin,

  424. the Canaanite king,

  425. until they destroyed him.

  426. And then if we turn over

  427. to chapter 5,

  428. having repeated again

  429. what Jael did,

  430. we read in verse 31,

  431. So may all your enemies perish,

  432. O Lord.

  433. What Jael did

  434. is presented to us

  435. as being God's victory

  436. over his enemies.

  437. Now,

  438. this is a troubling passage

  439. for us, isn't it?

  440. I used to live in Skye.

  441. In Skye,

  442. there are lots of B&Bs

  443. and things like that.

  444. People talk all the time

  445. about Highland hospitality.

  446. People talk similarly

  447. about Middle Eastern hospitality

  448. or ancient Near Eastern hospitality.

  449. you're talking about the Bible.

  450. Well, this is the opposite

  451. of that, isn't it?

  452. What was Jael doing?

  453. She went out and met him

  454. and tricked him

  455. and lured him in.

  456. Cicero is presented

  457. as an almost pathetic figure.

  458. Isn't he?

  459. Almost like a baby

  460. being put to bed

  461. and tucked up

  462. with a blanket

  463. and given milk

  464. until she takes a tent peg

  465. and drives it

  466. through his temple

  467. and nails him

  468. to the ground.

  469. We think,

  470. my goodness,

  471. what do we do with this?

  472. We find this very troubling.

  473. It's important for us,

  474. I think,

  475. understanding this passage

  476. and what the Bible

  477. is doing with it.

  478. First of all,

  479. to consider

  480. what kind of man

  481. Cicero was.

  482. We're not told

  483. a lot about him,

  484. but if you look

  485. at chapter 5,

  486. do you notice

  487. at the end of that,

  488. Cicero hasn't come home

  489. and his mother

  490. is worried.

  491. His household

  492. is worried.

  493. Where is Cicero?

  494. Why is he taking

  495. so long

  496. in coming back?

  497. And do you see

  498. what they tell themselves

  499. to try to comfort themselves?

  500. Well, he's only taking

  501. so long

  502. because he's so busy

  503. gathering plunder.

  504. And in verse 30,

  505. are they not finding

  506. and dividing the spoils

  507. a girl or two

  508. for each man?

  509. The words that Cicero's mother

  510. there uses for a girl,

  511. it's literally womb.

  512. Now,

  513. this isn't Cicero speaking.

  514. You understand,

  515. this is his mother

  516. speaking about him.

  517. Tells us something

  518. about Canaanite culture,

  519. doesn't it?

  520. This is what she hoped

  521. her son was doing.

  522. He was someone

  523. who dehumanized

  524. other people,

  525. who dehumanized women,

  526. who treated them

  527. as nothing more

  528. than sexual objects.

  529. And this was the nature,

  530. this and other things.

  531. This was the nature

  532. of his 20-year oppression

  533. of the Israelites.

  534. Cicero was a wicked man.

  535. To try to think of it

  536. in modern terms

  537. in our own day,

  538. a different

  539. but similar example,

  540. in 2011,

  541. when U.S. Special Forces

  542. finally found

  543. where Osama bin Laden was.

  544. And they engaged him

  545. and Osama bin Laden

  546. in the end of that

  547. encounter.

  548. He died.

  549. We didn't feel sorry

  550. for him,

  551. did we?

  552. Because he was

  553. a wicked person

  554. who was bent

  555. on destruction

  556. and created

  557. an organization

  558. that specialized

  559. in killing

  560. innocent people.

  561. And when he died,

  562. we thought,

  563. well,

  564. he got what he deserved.

  565. When we read

  566. through this account,

  567. we need to recognize

  568. that we are not

  569. to feel sorry

  570. for Cicero.

  571. he got what

  572. he deserved.

  573. I think there are

  574. two further considerations

  575. when we encounter

  576. this kind of thing

  577. in the Old Testament.

  578. First of all,

  579. we need to keep in mind

  580. that at this time,

  581. for God's people,

  582. there was the church,

  583. if you will,

  584. as an organization,

  585. and there was the state,

  586. and they were

  587. the same thing.

  588. For Israel,

  589. there was no distinction

  590. between the church

  591. and the state.

  592. So very often

  593. in the Old Testament,

  594. you see that those

  595. people who were

  596. leaders of God's people

  597. ended up being

  598. military leaders.

  599. The Bible itself

  600. is quite clear

  601. that that is no longer

  602. the case for us.

  603. There is a distinction

  604. between the church

  605. and the state.

  606. Those who are leaders

  607. in the church

  608. are not military leaders.

  609. God's kingdom

  610. is not to be

  611. advanced

  612. through military might.

  613. There is a difference

  614. in that sense.

  615. We also need

  616. to keep in mind

  617. that as we read

  618. these kind of accounts

  619. in the Old Testament,

  620. very often,

  621. these pictures

  622. of judgment,

  623. the flood,

  624. Sodom and Gomorrah,

  625. what happened

  626. to the Canaanites,

  627. for example,

  628. what happened

  629. to Sisera,

  630. typically,

  631. these are presented

  632. to us

  633. as foreshadows

  634. of a greater event.

  635. One day,

  636. every single person

  637. will stand

  638. before God.

  639. we will give

  640. an account

  641. of our lives.

  642. We have consciences,

  643. that's testimony

  644. to the fact

  645. that we know

  646. that that's true.

  647. And God

  648. will defeat

  649. his enemies.

  650. One day,

  651. God will be victorious.

  652. He will put to right

  653. all the wrongs

  654. of this world.

  655. And these things

  656. that we read,

  657. for example,

  658. with jail,

  659. they aren't examples

  660. for us

  661. of what we are

  662. to go out and do.

  663. The Bible isn't here

  664. teaching us

  665. that we should go

  666. and do something

  667. like what jail

  668. has done.

  669. But this is

  670. a picture to us

  671. of God's

  672. final judgment

  673. over his enemies.

  674. Even though

  675. we are not

  676. to do these things

  677. ourselves,

  678. it doesn't mean

  679. that it has

  680. nothing to teach us.

  681. So,

  682. God

  683. will be victorious

  684. in judgment.

  685. Now,

  686. that was true

  687. in Judges chapters

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  688. 4 and 5.

  689. God could expect

  690. these people

  691. to side with him.

  692. He could expect

  693. Barak to side with him

  694. and Deborah

  695. and jail

  696. and the rest

  697. because he was

  698. victorious.

  699. And if that was

  700. true now,

  701. it's still true

  702. today.

  703. There's,

  704. I think it's

  705. a striking passage

  706. in the New Testament.

  707. The Apostle Paul

  708. has arrived

  709. in Greece

  710. and he is there

  711. making known

  712. his gospel,

  713. this message

  714. that he presents.

  715. And he's speaking

  716. about what happened

  717. in the life

  718. of Jesus.

  719. Jesus came,

  720. he taught,

  721. he performed

  722. various miracles,

  723. he was betrayed

  724. by his enemies,

  725. he was handed over

  726. and crucified.

  727. But then Paul

  728. goes on to say

  729. that God

  730. has set a day

  731. when he will

  732. judge the world

  733. with justice

  734. by the man

  735. he has appointed.

  736. Now,

  737. in the context,

  738. that man is Jesus.

  739. Now,

  740. do you see

  741. what Paul

  742. is saying?

  743. Paul is saying

  744. that there will

  745. be a day

  746. of judgment.

  747. There will be

  748. a day when

  749. God will be

  750. victorious

  751. over all

  752. of his enemies.

  753. Now,

  754. that's a big

  755. claim.

  756. He says

  757. that this

  758. will happen

  759. when Jesus

  760. comes in judgment.

  761. That's the man

  762. that God

  763. has appointed.

  764. Now,

  765. as Paul

  766. proclaims this

  767. message,

  768. notice why

  769. he expects

  770. people to

  771. believe this.

  772. He doesn't

  773. say,

  774. well,

  775. just take

  776. my word

  777. for it.

  778. He has

  779. given proof

  780. of this

  781. to all

  782. men

  783. by raising

  784. him from

  785. the dead.

  786. Jesus

  787. did truly

  788. die,

  789. but three

  790. days later

  791. Jesus was

  792. raised from

  793. the dead.

  794. And one

  795. of the points

  796. that the Bible

  797. makes with

  798. regards to

  799. that is

  800. that Jesus'

  801. resurrection

  802. is proof

  803. that he

  804. is judge.

  805. It's proof

  806. that he

  807. wins.

  808. He will

  809. come victorious.

  810. Now,

  811. that's good

  812. news,

  813. isn't it?

  814. The hymn

  815. that we

  816. began with

  817. tonight

  818. is rather

  819. striking

  820. hymn,

  821. isn't it,

  822. the way

  823. I've never

  824. heard it

  825. before,

  826. speaking about

  827. the darkness

  828. and the way

  829. the darkness

  830. is heavy

  831. upon this

  832. world.

  833. But that's

  834. true,

  835. isn't it?

  836. We're told,

  837. for example,

  838. that there's

  839. more slavery

  840. and people

  841. trafficking

  842. now than

  843. there has

  844. ever been.

  845. There is

  846. much darkness

  847. in this

  848. world,

  849. and sometimes

  850. we experience

  851. that in

  852. our own

  853. lives.

  854. if God

  855. will one

  856. day come,

  857. if he

  858. will be

  859. victorious

  860. over his

  861. enemies,

  862. that's good

  863. news,

  864. isn't it?

  865. But perhaps

  866. not by

  867. itself.

  868. Because if

  869. God were

  870. only victorious

  871. in judgment,

  872. we might

  873. wonder,

  874. well,

  875. what about

  876. us?

  877. Who among

  878. us could

  879. stand in

  880. the presence

  881. of this

  882. God?

  883. God.

  884. But the

  885. good news

  886. is that

  887. not only

  888. does God

  889. call you

  890. to turn

  891. to him

  892. in light

  893. of his

  894. victory

  895. in judgment,

  896. he also

  897. emphasizes in

  898. his passage

  899. that he

  900. is victorious

  901. in salvation.

  902. If you

  903. turn with me

  904. back to

  905. chapter 4.

  906. After

  907. Ehud died,

  908. the Israelites

  909. once again

  910. did evil

  911. in the eyes

  912. of the

  913. Lord.

  914. Again,

  915. if we

  916. render that

  917. slightly more

  918. literally,

  919. the passage

  920. says,

  921. the Israelites

  922. once again

  923. did evil

  924. in the eyes

  925. of the

  926. Lord,

  927. and Ehud

  928. was dead.

  929. Chapter 4

  930. is echoing a

  931. statement which

  932. you will have

  933. seen over and

  934. over again,

  935. haunt you.

  936. Back in

  937. chapter 3,

  938. verse 7,

  939. the Israelites

  940. did what was

  941. evil in the

  942. eyes of the

  943. Lord.

  944. In chapter 3,

  945. verse 12,

  946. once again

  947. the Israelites

  948. did what was

  949. evil in the

  950. eyes of the

  951. Lord.

  952. And in

  953. chapter 4,

  954. we read the

  955. Israelites once

  956. again did

  957. evil in the

  958. eyes of the

  959. Lord.

  960. But Ehud

  961. was dead.

  962. They had

  963. messed up

  964. before,

  965. but God

  966. had sent

  967. Ehud.

  968. God had

  969. sent this

  970. man who

  971. delivered them

  972. from the

  973. mess that

  974. they had

  975. created.

  976. And as a

  977. result of

  978. that,

  979. back in

  980. verse 30,

  981. we see that

  982. the land had

  983. peace for

  984. 80 years.

  985. Such was the

  986. impact of what

  987. God did through

  988. Ehud that it

  989. lasted for 80

  990. years,

  991. more than one

  992. person's lifetime.

  993. But he's dead,

  994. and they've

  995. messed up

  996. again.

  997. hope for

  998. hope.

  999. And he might be

  1000. tempted to

  1001. think,

  1002. well,

  1003. what hope

  1004. is there

  1005. now,

  1006. honestly?

  1007. Maybe you've

  1008. gotten to that

  1009. point in your

  1010. own life.

  1011. Maybe you've

  1012. messed up again

  1013. and again

  1014. and again,

  1015. and you start

  1016. to think,

  1017. well,

  1018. what hope

  1019. is there for

  1020. me?

  1021. Well,

  1022. that's what we

  1023. get to at the

  1024. point of this

  1025. passage.

  1026. And in

  1027. verse 4,

  1028. in verse 3,

  1029. we see that

  1030. the Israelites

  1031. cried to the

  1032. Lord for help.

  1033. It's at this

  1034. point,

  1035. in the pattern

  1036. that's been

  1037. established in

  1038. the book of

  1039. Judges,

  1040. it's at this

  1041. point that you

  1042. expect to be

  1043. told that God

  1044. raised up a

  1045. deliverer for

  1046. them.

  1047. And what,

  1048. in fact,

  1049. we read is

  1050. that of

  1051. Deborah,

  1052. a prophetess,

  1053. the wife of

  1054. Lapidoth,

  1055. was judging

  1056. Israel at that

  1057. time.

  1058. Now,

  1059. at the risk

  1060. of sounding

  1061. sexist,

  1062. in their

  1063. culture,

  1064. if you're

  1065. facing military

  1066. oppression,

  1067. and you want

  1068. a military

  1069. leader,

  1070. what you

  1071. want is

  1072. not a

  1073. woman.

  1074. And yet,

  1075. that's who

  1076. we read

  1077. about.

  1078. And so,

  1079. you're still

  1080. left wondering,

  1081. what's going

  1082. to happen?

  1083. How are

  1084. these people

  1085. going to be

  1086. delivered?

  1087. Well,

  1088. then we

  1089. encounter

  1090. Barak,

  1091. but Barak

  1092. is less

  1093. than impressive,

  1094. isn't he?

  1095. And still

  1096. you're wondering,

  1097. is there

  1098. really any

  1099. hope for

  1100. them?

  1101. These people

  1102. really don't

  1103. seem to

  1104. measure up.

  1105. Barak doesn't

  1106. measure up to

  1107. the standard

  1108. of Othniel,

  1109. or Ehud,

  1110. for example,

  1111. the judges

  1112. that we read

  1113. about earlier

  1114. in the book,

  1115. and yet,

  1116. the point is

  1117. that God

  1118. responded to

  1119. his people,

  1120. and even

  1121. though the

  1122. situation

  1123. seemed hopeless,

  1124. and even

  1125. though at

  1126. first you

  1127. couldn't even

  1128. see how God

  1129. was going to

  1130. do anything,

  1131. there's a

  1132. lesson there,

  1133. isn't there,

  1134. in terms of

  1135. how we interpret

  1136. providence.

  1137. Often we're

  1138. perplexed by the

  1139. situation that we

  1140. find ourselves in,

  1141. and we think

  1142. it's somehow

  1143. wrong,

  1144. and we

  1145. forget what

  1146. God is able

  1147. to do,

  1148. and he can

  1149. do beyond

  1150. what we

  1151. would ever

  1152. imagine.

  1153. But through

  1154. these people,

  1155. as unlikely

  1156. as they

  1157. seemed,

  1158. through Deborah,

  1159. and through

  1160. Barak,

  1161. and through

  1162. Jael,

  1163. God did

  1164. save his

  1165. people.

  1166. God was not

  1167. only victorious

  1168. over his

  1169. enemies,

  1170. he also

  1171. saved his

  1172. people.

  1173. And that

  1174. is so

  1175. important for

  1176. us,

  1177. because it

  1178. is not

  1179. merely true

  1180. that God

  1181. is a God

  1182. of judgment.

  1183. It is not

  1184. merely the

  1185. case that

  1186. every person

  1187. will give

  1188. an account

  1189. of their

  1190. lives to

  1191. God,

  1192. to Jesus.

  1193. That is

  1194. true,

  1195. but if I

  1196. could quote

  1197. again from

  1198. the Apostle

  1199. Paul,

  1200. in another

  1201. passage,

  1202. Paul is

  1203. again speaking

  1204. about the

  1205. resurrection of

  1206. Jesus,

  1207. he says,

  1208. the one

  1209. whom God

  1210. raised from

  1211. the dead

  1212. did not

  1213. see decay.

  1214. That is

  1215. a reference

  1216. to the

  1217. fact of

  1218. Jesus'

  1219. resurrection.

  1220. And notice

  1221. the result

  1222. of that

  1223. in Paul's

  1224. thinking.

  1225. Therefore,

  1226. my brothers,

  1227. that is

  1228. because Jesus

  1229. has been

  1230. raised from

  1231. the dead,

  1232. I want

  1233. you to

  1234. know that

  1235. through

  1236. Jesus,

  1237. the forgiveness

  1238. of sins

  1239. is proclaimed

  1240. to you.

  1241. Through

  1242. him,

  1243. everyone who

  1244. believes is

  1245. justified from

  1246. everything you

  1247. could not be

  1248. justified from

  1249. by the

  1250. law of

  1251. Moses.

  1252. There is

  1253. hope for

  1254. us because

  1255. God is

  1256. victorious in

  1257. salvation.

  1258. Jesus was

  1259. raised from

  1260. the dead,

  1261. and that's

  1262. proof not

  1263. merely that

  1264. he will

  1265. come in

  1266. judgment,

  1267. but it

  1268. is also

  1269. proof that

  1270. Jesus is

  1271. the one who

  1272. is able to

  1273. forgive you,

  1274. even when

  1275. you have

  1276. once again

  1277. done evil

  1278. in the eyes

  1279. of the

  1280. Lord.

  1281. Again and

  1282. again and

  1283. again,

  1284. we find

  1285. that in

  1286. the book

  1287. of Judges,

  1288. these people

  1289. messed up

  1290. over and

  1291. over again,

  1292. but God

  1293. didn't write

  1294. them off.

  1295. And you

  1296. can know

  1297. that God

  1298. won't write

  1299. you off,

  1300. that you

  1301. can turn

  1302. to him

  1303. through

  1304. Jesus,

  1305. and he

  1306. will forgive

  1307. you all

  1308. of your

  1309. sins.

  1310. So,

  1311. God calls

  1312. you to

  1313. allegiance to

  1314. himself.

  1315. Through

  1316. his word,

  1317. he's telling

  1318. you tonight

  1319. that he

  1320. should be

  1321. the most

  1322. important

  1323. thing in

  1324. your life.

  1325. He's calling

  1326. you to

  1327. know him.

  1328. He's given

  1329. you reason

  1330. to do that

  1331. because he

  1332. is victorious.

  1333. In the

  1334. death and

  1335. resurrection of

  1336. Jesus,

  1337. God has

  1338. demonstrated that

  1339. he will be

  1340. victorious in

  1341. judgment and

  1342. also victorious

  1343. in salvation.

  1344. And so he

  1345. calls you to

  1346. know him.

  1347. Now,

  1348. my time

  1349. has gone,

  1350. I think,

  1351. really.

  1352. I would

  1353. like to

  1354. say very

  1355. briefly that

  1356. as we

  1357. look at

  1358. this passage,

  1359. that it

  1360. is a very

  1361. challenging

  1362. passage,

  1363. because going

  1364. beyond that,

  1365. it's not

  1366. merely enough

  1367. to profess to

  1368. be on God's

  1369. side,

  1370. is it?

  1371. That's a

  1372. point that's

  1373. repeatedly made

  1374. in this

  1375. passage.

  1376. We look

  1377. at Barak.

  1378. Barak isn't

  1379. really held up

  1380. as a positive

  1381. role model for

  1382. us,

  1383. is he?

  1384. We read

  1385. of Deborah

  1386. and Jael,

  1387. they're profoundly

  1388. different.

  1389. They are.

  1390. They respond

  1391. immediately to

  1392. God.

  1393. They take the

  1394. initiative.

  1395. This theme

  1396. carries on

  1397. into chapter

  1398. five.

  1399. Do you

  1400. notice that

  1401. on the one

  1402. hand,

  1403. there is praise

  1404. for those

  1405. who follow

  1406. God.

  1407. In chapter

  1408. five,

  1409. verse two,

  1410. note how it

  1411. speaks about

  1412. those who

  1413. willingly offer

  1414. themselves.

  1415. In verse

  1416. nine,

  1417. my heart is

  1418. with Israel's

  1419. princes,

  1420. with the

  1421. willing

  1422. volunteers,

  1423. among the

  1424. people of

  1425. God.

  1426. In verses

  1427. 13 to

  1428. 15,

  1429. it wasn't

  1430. actually just

  1431. those two

  1432. tribes.

  1433. We read in

  1434. chapter five

  1435. that there

  1436. were other

  1437. tribes that

  1438. went out

  1439. with Barak,

  1440. with Deborah.

  1441. Then the

  1442. men who were

  1443. left came

  1444. down to the

  1445. nobles,

  1446. people of

  1447. God.

  1448. Some came

  1449. from Ephraim,

  1450. Benjamin was

  1451. with the

  1452. people who

  1453. followed you,

  1454. and so

  1455. forth.

  1456. even in

  1457. verse 20,

  1458. even the

  1459. elements

  1460. sided with

  1461. God.

  1462. The heavens,

  1463. from the

  1464. heavens the

  1465. stars fought.

  1466. So you have

  1467. that on the

  1468. one hand.

  1469. On the

  1470. other hand,

  1471. notice in

  1472. verse 15,

  1473. partway through

  1474. the verse,

  1475. in the

  1476. districts of

  1477. Reuben,

  1478. there's much

  1479. searching of

  1480. heart.

  1481. Why did

  1482. you stay

  1483. among the

  1484. campfires to

  1485. hear the

  1486. whistling for

  1487. the flocks?

  1488. Gilead stayed

  1489. beyond the

  1490. Jordan, and

  1491. Dan, why

  1492. did he linger

  1493. by the

  1494. ships?

  1495. The tribe

  1496. of Dan had

  1497. their allotment

  1498. by the sea,

  1499. this telling

  1500. passage of

  1501. people frittering

  1502. away with

  1503. their boats,

  1504. other people

  1505. out literally

  1506. whistling after

  1507. sheep, trying to

  1508. ignore the fact

  1509. that anything was

  1510. going on.

  1511. Afterwards,

  1512. there was much

  1513. searching of

  1514. heart as

  1515. they realized

  1516. that they

  1517. hadn't done

  1518. anything.

  1519. Do you see

  1520. that there's a

  1521. challenge here,

  1522. not merely to

  1523. side with God,

  1524. but to live a

  1525. life that's

  1526. consistent with

  1527. that?

  1528. The passage is

  1529. teaching us that

  1530. it's not enough

  1531. merely to say

  1532. that we're

  1533. Christians,

  1534. it's not merely

  1535. enough to go to

  1536. church, that's

  1537. important, it's

  1538. not enough

  1539. merely to know

  1540. the Bible.

  1541. God calls us

  1542. to live a life

  1543. that's consistent

  1544. with that.

  1545. Now, I want

  1546. to conclude

  1547. very briefly

  1548. with one

  1549. practical point

  1550. as to how

  1551. we do that.

  1552. We all know

  1553. it's very

  1554. difficult to

  1555. do that.

  1556. It's easy

  1557. to be like

  1558. Barak.

  1559. It's easy to

  1560. know what God

  1561. wants us to

  1562. do and not

  1563. to do it.

  1564. We need to

  1565. remember that

  1566. Jesus has

  1567. come in

  1568. forgiveness.

  1569. We experience

  1570. forgiveness not

  1571. merely when we

  1572. first become

  1573. Christians.

  1574. We constantly

  1575. need to be

  1576. reminded that

  1577. Jesus is our

  1578. Savior.

  1579. But if we

  1580. take the

  1581. example of

  1582. Barak to

  1583. conclude with,

  1584. Barak wasn't

  1585. everything he

  1586. ought to have

  1587. been, was

  1588. he?

  1589. But at the

  1590. same time, he

  1591. wasn't a

  1592. complete disaster,

  1593. to be fair to

  1594. Barak.

  1595. He did

  1596. ultimately do

  1597. what he was

  1598. meant to do.

  1599. In chapter

  1600. five, he's

  1601. commended.

  1602. Verse one,

  1603. on that day,

  1604. Deborah and

  1605. Barak, son of

  1606. Abinuam, sang

  1607. this song.

  1608. Why is it

  1609. that Barak

  1610. turned out

  1611. better than

  1612. he might

  1613. have done?

  1614. That's because

  1615. of Deborah.

  1616. I think there's

  1617. a profound

  1618. point here.

  1619. We are not

  1620. to lead the

  1621. Christian life

  1622. on our own.

  1623. Because on

  1624. our own, we

  1625. would typically,

  1626. I would typically

  1627. make a mess of

  1628. my life.

  1629. But God

  1630. hasn't left us

  1631. on her own.

  1632. He has made

  1633. you part of a

  1634. congregation here

  1635. in Brunsfield.

  1636. And as

  1637. Christians, if

  1638. you are

  1639. Christians, if

  1640. you have

  1641. decided to

  1642. follow Jesus,

  1643. you have

  1644. responsibilities not

  1645. merely towards

  1646. God, but you

  1647. have responsibilities

  1648. towards one

  1649. another.

  1650. To challenge

  1651. one another, to

  1652. comfort one

  1653. another, to

  1654. encourage one

  1655. another.

  1656. So what is it

  1657. that you think

  1658. about when you

  1659. wake up in the

  1660. morning?

  1661. And what is it

  1662. that you think

  1663. about as you're

  1664. lying there on

  1665. your bed at

  1666. night?

  1667. God.

  1668. This passage is

  1669. telling us that

  1670. that thing, that

  1671. person, ought to

  1672. be our creator.

  1673. The God who has

  1674. revealed himself to

  1675. us through Jesus.

  1676. The God who is

  1677. victorious in

  1678. judgment, but also

  1679. the God who is

  1680. victorious in

  1681. salvation.

  1682. You bow your

  1683. heads with me as

  1684. we close in

  1685. prayer.

  1686. Our Father in

  1687. heaven, we thank

  1688. you that you

  1689. have given us

  1690. your word.

  1691. We pray that as

  1692. we leave here

  1693. that we would do

  1694. so knowing that

  1695. you have spoken

  1696. to us and we

  1697. ask that your

  1698. word would remain

  1699. with us.

  1700. We pray that we

  1701. would not be

  1702. people who merely

  1703. know your

  1704. word, but we

  1705. pray that your

  1706. word would touch

  1707. our hearts, be

  1708. at work within

  1709. us by your

  1710. Holy Spirit.

  1711. God, we ask

  1712. that you would

  1713. make Jesus to

  1714. be precious to

  1715. us.

  1716. May we marvel

  1717. that not only

  1718. did he die and

  1719. give his life in

  1720. our place, but

  1721. that on the

  1722. third day he was

  1723. raised from the

  1724. dead and that

  1725. because of his

  1726. resurrection we

  1727. have hope.

  1728. And so we pray,

  1729. Father, that

  1730. through him you

  1731. would be at work

  1732. within us by your

  1733. Holy Spirit.

  1734. We ask that you

  1735. would bless us as

  1736. your people, bless

  1737. this congregation

  1738. here in Brunsfield.

  1739. We ask that you

  1740. would be with

  1741. those whom you

  1742. have raised up as

  1743. leaders in this

  1744. congregation and

  1745. bless everyone

  1746. here connected

  1747. with it in all

  1748. of their various

  1749. different roles.

  1750. We pray that you

  1751. would enable them

  1752. individually and

  1753. as a people to

  1754. live a life that

  1755. honors you, to

  1756. live a life that

  1757. is a witness to

  1758. you and that

  1759. through this

  1760. congregation that

  1761. many more people

  1762. would come to

  1763. know you.

  1764. We ask, Father,

  1765. that you would

  1766. watch over us,

  1767. that you would

  1768. forgive us all

  1769. our sins, for

  1770. we pray this in

  1771. Jesus' name.

  1772. Amen.
