  1. Thank you.

  2. Well, let us pray that the Lord would open our hearts

  3. to what he's just spoken to us in his precious word.

  4. Loving Father, we thank you that we can hear you speak to us.

  5. We ask, Father, that you would open our hearts

  6. and we ask, Father, that your word would dwell in us

  7. and enrich us in every way this morning.

  8. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. Well, Graham has a week up his sleeve

  10. at the end of each sermon series

  11. and I thought it might be helpful in these filler weeks

  12. if we would have a look at the letter of James

  13. because you can delve into James every now and then quite easily.

  14. James' letter doesn't really build up an argument

  15. the way that Paul's letters often do.

  16. It's a bit more like a grab bag of reflections on the Christian life

  17. and the very first aspect of the Christian life

  18. that James wants to reflect on

  19. is actually the first point that Graham raised in his sermon last week.

  20. So thematically it connects quite nicely.

  21. Now who can remember the first point of Graham's sermon last week?

  22. Time to put somebody on the spot

  23. and see how much we listen to sermons.

  24. Maybe I should ask one of the elders.

  25. So, anybody?

  26. What was Graham's first point from last week?

  27. No hands.

  28. The elders are starting to sweat.

  29. So, who could remember?

  30. Oh.

  31. To stand firm and cry.

  32. In order to wait.

  33. Almost.

  34. Almost.

  35. Graham's first point was to rejoice.

  36. To be joyful.

  37. That's right.

  38. Rejoice.

  39. The Apostle Paul was indeed telling the Philippians

  40. to rejoice and stand firm in their trials

  41. and to rejoice always.

  42. He was commanding us to rejoice

  43. not just according to the circumstances

  44. that we find ourselves in

  45. but because what God has done for us in the Lord Jesus

  46. is so amazing.

  47. But let's just think about that for a minute.

  48. If you had to write a list of your all-time moments of pure joy,

  49. what would go down on paper?

  50. Perhaps it would include Scotland's glorious defeat of Australia

  51. a few weeks ago.

  52. Particularly sweet,

  53. given what happened in the 2015 world final, quarterfinal.

  54. I was on the other side of the globe

  55. so that wasn't quite so painful for me.

  56. Perhaps it would include signing on the dotted line

  57. of your first home

  58. or a reunion perhaps with a long-lost friend.

  59. But what about a difficult job?

  60. What about getting cancer?

  61. What about a very strained marriage?

  62. Would any of these things make it onto your list?

  63. Of course not.

  64. These things aren't sources of joy.

  65. They're unpleasant.

  66. They're painful.

  67. But astonishingly,

  68. James begins his letter by saying

  69. that they should make it onto such a list.

  70. In verse 2, James says,

  71. consider it pure joy,

  72. my brothers,

  73. whenever you face trials of many kinds.

  74. Now what kind of jerk writes that?

  75. It's completely insensitive.

  76. What pastor says that?

  77. Wouldn't it be a bit more pastoral to say,

  78. I'm sorry,

  79. I'm so sorry to hear

  80. that you're going through such a rough time?

  81. Wouldn't that be the properly Christian response

  82. to a trial,

  83. a serious trial of our faith?

  84. The thing is,

  85. it's actually hard to imagine anyone better qualified

  86. to offer a more properly Christian response.

  87. The James who wrote this letter knew Jesus better than anyone.

  88. He spent many more years alongside Jesus

  89. than any of the disciples.

  90. As far as we know,

  91. this is the James who grew up in the same home as Jesus.

  92. More than anyone,

  93. James knew the Lord Jesus best.

  94. And perhaps that's why James actually became

  95. the most prominent leader of the early church.

  96. Well, that doesn't seem like it at first glance.

  97. What James is saying here is in fact

  98. a profoundly Christian response

  99. to the sufferings and difficulties

  100. that we face in life.

  101. And I think if we don't try to get to grips with this,

  102. if we don't try to get to grips with it,

  103. we stand to lose a lot.

  104. But in order to do that,

  105. we've got to slow down.

  106. We've got to slow down

  107. to think very carefully about the what

  108. and the why and the how

  109. of this very short sentence

  110. to consider it pure joy

  111. when we face trials of many kinds.

  112. And the what, I think,

  113. is like to suggest the what

  114. is especially easy to get wrong.

  115. It's very easy to get wrong.

  116. And I think a lot of Christians

  117. actually do get it wrong.

  118. And it's very easy to misunderstand

  119. what James is saying.

  120. It's easy to hear him getting a bit zen,

  121. as if James is telling us

  122. to convince ourselves

  123. that what is painful

  124. is actually not painful after all.

  125. That we just pretend it away,

  126. to turn pain off like a tap

  127. and pretend that trials are fun.

  128. This reminds me of a series

  129. of children's books

  130. that I had as a child.

  131. Maybe some of you might have had them.

  132. They were written by Monroe Leaf.

  133. He's actually a British author,

  134. so maybe some of the people here

  135. have seen them.

  136. Has anyone come across them?

  137. No?

  138. The titles of these books

  139. all end in Can Be Fun.

  140. So manners can be fun.

  141. Safety can be fun.

  142. And they have this bizarre

  143. psychological agenda.

  144. They're full of pictures

  145. like this one.

  146. It's kind of South Park

  147. meets Pilgrim's Progress.

  148. And if I show any more

  149. it'll completely distract you

  150. and you won't listen to anything

  151. more I've said in the sermon.

  152. But the point is fairly clear.

  153. I mean, how is this going to work?

  154. Trying to convince a child

  155. that something is fun

  156. when it isn't

  157. is madness.

  158. I mean, what six-year-old boy

  159. having read one of these books

  160. is going to think

  161. that manners are fun

  162. or safety for that fact?

  163. Anyway, the problem is, of course,

  164. a lot of Christians

  165. read James' letter

  166. as if it were, in fact,

  167. written by Monroe Leaf.

  168. They hear James

  169. trying to convince them

  170. really that getting sick

  171. or going through

  172. some other kind of crisis

  173. can be fun.

  174. That's not at all

  175. what James is saying.

  176. James is not saying

  177. that trials can be fun.

  178. More than anyone,

  179. James knew that trials

  180. are painful

  181. and unpleasant.

  182. According to tradition,

  183. James himself

  184. was martyred in Jerusalem

  185. by being thrown off

  186. the roof of the temple

  187. and then clubbed to death.

  188. I'm sure that wasn't fun.

  189. So we need to take care

  190. with what James is saying.

  191. Trials are not fun

  192. and he's not trying

  193. to convince us

  194. that they are.

  195. He's actually saying

  196. something quite different.

  197. He's talking about

  198. what trials achieve for us.

  199. He's telling us

  200. that as painful

  201. as they may be,

  202. they are, in fact,

  203. a means to a glorious end.

  204. We are to consider it joy

  205. when we face trials

  206. of many kinds

  207. because of what

  208. they bring about for us.

  209. And he's calling us

  210. to a shift of mindset

  211. in that.

  212. But before we go any further,

  213. I want to suggest

  214. this is a shift of mindset

  215. that's actually not

  216. all that unfamiliar.

  217. Perhaps you've made it yourself

  218. and if you haven't,

  219. I'm sure you've observed

  220. it in others.

  221. Take, for example, running.

  222. I honestly can't ever imagine

  223. wanting to run a marathon.

  224. I enjoy running in moderation.

  225. I usually run up and down

  226. the Union Canal

  227. on a Sunday morning,

  228. depending on how my aging knees

  229. and hamstrings are holding up.

  230. I'll happily run five miles.

  231. I have no desire whatsoever

  232. to run 26.

  233. Although I know there are

  234. a few people here that do,

  235. so you're mad and I'm not.

  236. But in any case,

  237. the bandmaster of our children's

  238. former school back in Sydney,

  239. he really, really, really does.

  240. In fact, he's run 50 of them.

  241. Noel even has a blog

  242. on the internet about his running

  243. and recounting a recent

  244. ultra-marathon.

  245. So ultra-marathons,

  246. that's in another level.

  247. He writes,

  248. if I have a weakness

  249. in these kinds of events,

  250. it would have to be a cramp

  251. around the four-hour mark.

  252. Four-hour mark.

  253. In so many cases,

  254. I've suffered excruciating

  255. cramps in my upper legs.

  256. Today would be no different.

  257. Will I do it again?

  258. Yep.

  259. Count me in.

  260. Noel simply loves it.

  261. He ran from Newcastle to Sydney,

  262. which was about from Edinburgh

  263. to London, I think.

  264. But anyway, who cares?

  265. He loves running.

  266. And does he love the pain?

  267. Of course not.

  268. He really suffers.

  269. But he makes a mind shift

  270. about that pain,

  271. which is very similar

  272. to the one that James

  273. is talking about.

  274. Noel loves the end

  275. that the pain achieves for him.

  276. He loves the glorious end

  277. of finishing the race.

  278. And this is the same

  279. as what James is saying.

  280. James is saying that

  281. if we fix our eyes

  282. on the glorious end

  283. that our trials are achieving for us,

  284. it will transform

  285. our experience of pain.

  286. And the key thing, therefore,

  287. is that we understand

  288. what this end is.

  289. And thankfully,

  290. James tells us

  291. exactly what it is.

  292. Consider it pure joy,

  293. my brothers,

  294. whenever you face

  295. trials of many kinds,

  296. because you know

  297. that the testing of your faith

  298. develops perseverance.

  299. Perseverance must finish

  300. its work so that what?

  301. So that you may be mature

  302. and complete,

  303. not lacking anything.

  304. Mature and complete.

  305. This is the glorious end

  306. for those who entrust themselves

  307. to the Lord Jesus.

  308. More literally,

  309. James says,

  310. perfect and complete.

  311. See, James isn't talking here

  312. about just a basic Christian maturity

  313. where you leave

  314. your gross sins behind

  315. and you learn more

  316. about Jesus.

  317. No,

  318. he has something much,

  319. much bigger in mind.

  320. James speaks of

  321. a glorious hope,

  322. the hope of becoming

  323. a perfect

  324. and complete

  325. human being.

  326. Right now,

  327. we're very imperfect

  328. and very incomplete

  329. human beings,

  330. aren't we?

  331. we've been forgiven

  332. if we put our trust

  333. in Jesus,

  334. but we fail

  335. on a daily basis.

  336. We fall down

  337. and sin.

  338. We might have

  339. changed a bit,

  340. but we still drift back

  341. into that place

  342. where we came from.

  343. We might be growing

  344. a bit,

  345. but we barely come up

  346. to Jesus' waist.

  347. Kate bought some

  348. high-heeled boots

  349. the other day

  350. because our

  351. eldest son,

  352. Joe,

  353. who's growing so fast,

  354. Joe,

  355. is growing into

  356. his full

  357. physical stature

  358. and the Lord willing

  359. in the course of his life,

  360. he will also attain

  361. to the full stature

  362. of Christ.

  363. And that is the glorious

  364. end of the Christian life.

  365. God changes us

  366. from the inside out

  367. until we attain

  368. to the full stature

  369. of Christ.

  370. And irrespective

  371. of how much progress

  372. we actually make

  373. in this,

  374. in the course of our life,

  375. God will bring this

  376. to completion

  377. on the day

  378. that he raises us

  379. from the dead

  380. and transforms us

  381. in glory.

  382. On that day,

  383. we won't be raised

  384. as incomplete

  385. and imperfect

  386. human beings

  387. that we are now.

  388. We will resemble

  389. the Lord Jesus

  390. in every way.

  391. This is the maturity

  392. and completeness

  393. that James is talking about.

  394. This is the glorious end

  395. for which trials

  396. are the means.

  397. And James resumes

  398. his train of thought

  399. in verse 12

  400. to flesh this out

  401. where he writes again,

  402. blessed is the man

  403. who perseveres

  404. under trial

  405. because

  406. when he has

  407. stood the test

  408. he will receive

  409. the crown of life

  410. that God has promised

  411. to those

  412. who love him.

  413. The crown of life

  414. is the glorious

  415. perfection

  416. and completeness

  417. that God will bestow

  418. on those

  419. who love him,

  420. on those

  421. who have entrusted

  422. themselves

  423. to Jesus

  424. who will raise

  425. him from the dead.

  426. On that day

  427. they will resemble

  428. Jesus

  429. in all his

  430. magnificent beauty.

  431. We will be raised

  432. as Jesus is raised.

  433. And I think

  434. James actually

  435. had someone

  436. very much

  437. like Noel

  438. in mind

  439. when he chose

  440. the metaphor

  441. of a crown

  442. because it's

  443. running imagery.

  444. When James

  445. uses the word

  446. crown

  447. it refers to

  448. the laurel wreath

  449. presented to

  450. the winning athlete

  451. in the ancient games.

  452. Standing firm

  453. through trials

  454. James says

  455. is just like that.

  456. It's like a race

  457. with lots of pain

  458. but at the end

  459. you are crowned

  460. with eternal life.

  461. There's a bit of

  462. difference between

  463. the Olympic games

  464. and the Christian life.

  465. The metaphor

  466. kind of falls down

  467. a bit

  468. as all

  469. preaching metaphors

  470. do

  471. because we're not

  472. exactly competing

  473. against each other

  474. for this crown.

  475. There's more

  476. than one of them.

  477. In the Christian life

  478. you just need to

  479. finish to get the crown.

  480. You don't need

  481. to come first.

  482. So I guess

  483. James' crown

  484. is more like

  485. the t-shirt

  486. that you get

  487. at the end

  488. of finishing

  489. a modern marathon.

  490. In any case

  491. James' point

  492. is pretty clear.

  493. There is a glorious

  494. end for us

  495. if we stand firm

  496. through the trials

  497. of our faith.

  498. That glorious end

  499. is the perfection

  500. and completion

  501. that we await

  502. at the resurrection.

  503. And when you get this

  504. what James is saying

  505. about joy

  506. starts to become

  507. a little bit

  508. more clear.

  509. It starts to make

  510. more sense.

  511. We are to consider

  512. trials as pure joy

  513. not because they're fun

  514. but because they are

  515. a means to a glorious

  516. end.

  517. And if you see that

  518. the what makes

  519. more sense

  520. but if you're

  521. really honest

  522. you'll admit

  523. that a new problem

  524. actually starts

  525. to arise.

  526. And that's the problem

  527. of the why.

  528. why would trials

  529. be God's means

  530. for our perfection

  531. and completion?

  532. Why would he do that?

  533. Why would God

  534. choose terrible experiences

  535. as the means

  536. of our transformation?

  537. Who here hasn't

  538. asked that question?

  539. Perhaps only the people

  540. who have never experienced

  541. what James is talking about.

  542. James is not silly.

  543. He knows that this

  544. is a very serious question

  545. and so he wants

  546. to offer an answer to it.

  547. We can be tempted

  548. to blame God

  549. or even wonder

  550. whether God somehow

  551. enjoys our suffering.

  552. These are dark thoughts

  553. and James wants

  554. to protect us from them.

  555. But to understand

  556. his answer

  557. a very brief

  558. Greek lesson

  559. is necessary.

  560. There's a connection

  561. between verse 13

  562. and verse 2

  563. which is invisible

  564. in our English Bibles.

  565. unless that is

  566. you're following

  567. on with

  568. one of the very few

  569. translations

  570. that preserves

  571. this connection.

  572. Has anybody here

  573. grown up

  574. with the King James

  575. version?

  576. No?

  577. I know that this fellow

  578. was reading it

  579. until a little while ago.

  580. The King James

  581. actually preserves

  582. this connection

  583. between verse 13

  584. and verse 2

  585. and this connection

  586. holds the key

  587. to warding off

  588. the feeling

  589. that creeps up

  590. on us

  591. the feeling of

  592. blaming God

  593. for the trials

  594. we face.

  595. and the key

  596. is seeing

  597. how there is

  598. an element

  599. of temptation

  600. in every trial.

  601. Think about it.

  602. Every difficulty

  603. challenge

  604. and instance

  605. of suffering

  606. presents a powerful

  607. temptation

  608. to give up

  609. on God.

  610. Many of us

  611. will be able

  612. to think of

  613. a difficult time

  614. in our life

  615. which nearly

  616. brought us

  617. to give up

  618. on God

  619. and that temptation

  620. was every bit

  621. as real

  622. as being tempted

  623. to sin

  624. in some other way.

  625. Every trial

  626. is a temptation

  627. to give up

  628. on God

  629. and if you're

  630. being persecuted

  631. for your faith

  632. you can be tempted

  633. to stop trusting God

  634. especially in that situation.

  635. If you're suffering

  636. a terrible physical

  637. or mental illness

  638. you can be tempted

  639. to stop trusting God

  640. in that situation.

  641. Whatever the trial

  642. might be

  643. it tempts us

  644. to give up

  645. on God

  646. and it's exactly

  647. the same

  648. as being tempted

  649. to sin

  650. in lust

  651. or anger

  652. or envy.

  653. we are tempted

  654. to put faith

  655. to one side

  656. just in a different way.

  657. As Paul says

  658. in Romans 14

    Romans 14:23

  659. verse 23

  660. whatever does not

  661. proceed from faith

  662. is sin.

  663. So when trials

  664. do bring us

  665. to want to give up

  666. on God

  667. it's very easy

  668. to blame him

  669. for that

  670. and that's why

  671. James reminds us

  672. in verse 13

  673. when tempted

  674. no one should say

  675. God is tempting me

  676. for God cannot

  677. be tempted by evil

  678. nor does he tempt

  679. anyone.

  680. Difficulties

  681. challenges

  682. sufferings

  683. might bring us

  684. to resent him

  685. for bringing these things

  686. into our lives

  687. but we must never

  688. blame God for that.

  689. He isn't trying

  690. to deliberately

  691. undermine our faith.

  692. Pain and suffering

  693. come as part

  694. of the consequences

  695. of humanity's

  696. disobedience

  697. and rejection

  698. of God

  699. wholesale.

  700. We're the ones

  701. who opened

  702. Pandora's box.

  703. We're the ones

  704. who brought pain

  705. and suffering

  706. into the world

  707. and this is

  708. James' answer

  709. to the why.

  710. But James

  711. also knows

  712. that this is

  713. fairly cold comfort.

  714. James knows

  715. that by itself

  716. this why

  717. actually isn't

  718. really going

  719. to bring us

  720. any closer

  721. to considering

  722. trials as joy

  723. and that is

  724. why he's

  725. careful also

  726. to say

  727. something about

  728. the how.

  729. Coming to grips

  730. with what

  731. holds the key

  732. to this mind

  733. shift

  734. is what James

  735. is talking about

  736. when he goes on

  737. in verses 16

  738. and 17

  739. to say

  740. don't be deceived

  741. my dear brothers.

  742. Every good

  743. and perfect gift

  744. comes from above

  745. coming down

  746. from the father.

  747. Don't be deceived

  748. James says.

  749. Adam and Eve

  750. brought the paper

  751. but God is using

  752. it to wrap

  753. a glorious gift.

  754. By themselves

  755. trials are bad

  756. news

  757. but God takes

  758. them and he

  759. uses them

  760. as a means

  761. of bestowing

  762. on us

  763. a good

  764. and perfect

  765. gift.

  766. The crown

  767. of life

  768. that he was

  769. just speaking

  770. about in

  771. verse 12

  772. and the how

  773. simply consists

  774. in focusing

  775. on the gift

  776. and not

  777. the paper

  778. in not

  779. allowing the

  780. challenges

  781. these trials

  782. pose to our

  783. faith

  784. to deceive

  785. us into

  786. thinking that

  787. the crown

  788. of life

  789. is actually

  790. a fairly

  791. average gift.

  792. The how

  793. simply consists

  794. in seeing

  795. really seeing

  796. the glory

  797. of the end

  798. to which God

  799. calls us

  800. in his gospel.

  801. If we

  802. really see

  803. what we

  804. will be

  805. it will

  806. kindle a joy

  807. that cannot

  808. be quenched

  809. by any pain

  810. or difficulty.

  811. The transformation

  812. that God

  813. holds out

  814. for us

  815. in his gospel

  816. is so

  817. immeasurably

  818. great

  819. it defies

  820. all description.

  821. No eye

  822. has seen

  823. no ear

  824. has heard

  825. no mind

  826. has conceived

  827. what God

  828. has prepared

  829. for those

  830. who love

  831. him.

  832. But

  833. God

  834. has revealed

  835. it to us

  836. by his

  837. spirit.

  838. So says

  839. Paul

  840. God has

  841. revealed it

  842. to us

  843. what we

  844. shall be.

  845. In the

  846. scriptures

  847. God has

  848. revealed to

  849. us that

  850. the Lord

  851. of glory

  852. the crucified

  853. one

  854. now risen

  855. from the

  856. dead

  857. and seated

  858. in glory.

  859. God

  860. has revealed

  861. Jesus

  862. Christ

  863. and the

  864. promise of

  865. the gospel

  866. is that

  867. we shall

  868. be like

  869. him

  870. and that

  871. we shall

  872. share with

  873. him in

  874. his glory.

  875. 2 Thessalonians

  876. 2.14

  877. God called

  878. you to be

  879. saved through

  880. the gospel

  881. that you

  882. might share

  883. in the glory

  884. of the

  885. Lord Jesus

  886. Christ.

  887. God has

  888. revealed what

  889. God has

  890. prepared for

  891. those who

  892. love him.

  893. He has

  894. shown us

  895. his good

  896. and perfect

  897. gift which

  898. awaits us

  899. at Christ's

  900. return.

  901. All we need

  902. to do is

  903. fix our

  904. eyes on

  905. the horizon

  906. of our

  907. faith.

  908. The problem

  909. is though that

  910. in times of

  911. trials our

  912. horizon becomes

  913. so foreshortened

  914. that we can

  915. barely see two

  916. feet in front

  917. of us.

  918. It's like when

  919. the horror

  920. comes in.

  921. I was quite

  922. surprised in

  923. St Andrews

  924. recently at

  925. a conference

  926. someone turned

  927. a smoke

  928. machine on

  929. outside St

  930. Mary's

  931. College and

  932. then I had

  933. to remind

  934. myself that

  935. I was in

  936. Scotland.

  937. But this

  938. is exactly

  939. what happens

  940. in our

  941. trials.

  942. We can

  943. see nothing

  944. of what

  945. lies beyond

  946. our trials

  947. when we're

  948. in the midst

  949. of them,

  950. let alone

  951. the eternity

  952. that stretches

  953. out for us

  954. in the

  955. resurrection.

  956. The trials

  957. block everything

  958. out.

  959. The pain

  960. and the

  961. difficulty

  962. of what we're

  963. experiencing

  964. simply clouds

  965. our vision.

  966. But we can

  967. rejoice in

  968. trials if

  969. only we

  970. gain a

  971. fresh glimpse

  972. of what lies

  973. ahead.

  974. In this

  975. respect it's

  976. a bit like

  977. driving on

  978. the autobahn.

  979. There's no

  980. speed limit on

  981. those things

  982. which means

  983. you have to

  984. look a very

  985. long way

  986. forwards and

  987. back because

  988. the cars are

  989. travelling so

  990. fast.

  991. And it's

  992. exactly the

  993. same when we

  994. go through

  995. trials we

  996. need to be

  997. looking a

  998. long way

  999. back.

  1000. And a

  1001. long way

  1002. forward we

  1003. need to be

  1004. looking back

  1005. to the

  1006. resurrection

  1007. and forwards

  1008. to Christ's

  1009. return if we

  1010. are to rejoice

  1011. in our

  1012. trials.

  1013. If we can

  1014. lift our

  1015. eyes from

  1016. our trials to

  1017. see what lies

  1018. ahead, even

  1019. for a moment

  1020. we will see

  1021. things that can

  1022. move us in a

  1023. very different

  1024. way.

  1025. If we can

  1026. gain a glimpse

  1027. of the risen

  1028. Christ reigning

  1029. at the right

  1030. hand of the

  1031. Father in

  1032. glory, it

  1033. will stir

  1034. something.

  1035. joy.

  1036. If we look

  1037. long enough

  1038. and see in

  1039. him the

  1040. promise of

  1041. what we

  1042. shall be,

  1043. it might

  1044. even become

  1045. joy.

  1046. Seeing in

  1047. Christ a

  1048. reflection of

  1049. our future

  1050. selves is

  1051. what holds

  1052. the key to

  1053. making the

  1054. mind shift

  1055. James is

  1056. speaking about.

  1057. unless we

  1058. see Christ

  1059. in his

  1060. glory, we

  1061. will not

  1062. be moved

  1063. to joy by

  1064. the prospect

  1065. of being

  1066. like him.

  1067. Unless we

  1068. are transfixed

  1069. by his

  1070. beauty, we

  1071. will not be

  1072. moved to joy

  1073. at the thought

  1074. of attaining

  1075. to his full

  1076. stature.

  1077. The key to

  1078. considering trials

  1079. as joy consists

  1080. in this one

  1081. thing, constantly,

  1082. regularly,

  1083. repeatedly,

  1084. regaining a

  1085. glimpse of

  1086. who we

  1087. shall be.

  1088. And this

  1089. is why we

  1090. need to be

  1091. soaking ourselves

  1092. in all that

  1093. the scriptures

  1094. tell us of

  1095. this.

  1096. This is why we

  1097. need to be

  1098. scouring the

  1099. word of God

  1100. to fill out

  1101. an identikit

  1102. of our future

  1103. selves in the

  1104. face of Christ

  1105. so that we

  1106. can recall this

  1107. in the midst

  1108. of our trials.

  1109. When we're

  1110. feeling weakened

  1111. in our faith

  1112. and vulnerable

  1113. to sin,

  1114. who Christ

  1115. is must be

  1116. at the very

  1117. front of our

  1118. minds so

  1119. that we can

  1120. cast our

  1121. eyes on

  1122. his features,

  1123. on his

  1124. majesty,

  1125. on his

  1126. mercy,

  1127. and allow

  1128. something of

  1129. his glory

  1130. to displace

  1131. the anger

  1132. or the

  1133. despair

  1134. or whatever

  1135. it is

  1136. that may

  1137. have robbed

  1138. us of that

  1139. joy.

  1140. In our

  1141. congregation

  1142. back in

  1143. Sydney,

  1144. there was a

  1145. retired

  1146. minister who

  1147. once told me

  1148. how when he

  1149. was feeling

  1150. overwhelmed by

  1151. the difficulties

  1152. of his

  1153. ministry,

  1154. and there

  1155. were many,

  1156. things like

  1157. he might be

  1158. driving in

  1159. his car to

  1160. some meeting,

  1161. which would

  1162. really put him

  1163. to the test.

  1164. He would

  1165. recall the

  1166. vision of

  1167. Christ in

  1168. Revelation

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1169. chapter 1,

  1170. and fill his

  1171. mind with

  1172. John's

  1173. astonishing

  1174. description of

  1175. the Lord

  1176. Jesus.

  1177. What's

  1178. spiritual

  1179. wisdom?

  1180. Don knew

  1181. in a very

  1182. deeply practical

  1183. way the

  1184. how of this

  1185. mind shift

  1186. James is

  1187. speaking of.

  1188. But he

  1189. could make

  1190. this mind

  1191. shift only

  1192. because he

  1193. had etched

  1194. the detail

  1195. of what God

  1196. has revealed

  1197. in his

  1198. word onto

  1199. his mind.

  1200. He could

  1201. recall this

  1202. because he

  1203. had looked

  1204. so long

  1205. at Christ's

  1206. features so

  1207. many times.

  1208. You cannot

  1209. recall what

  1210. you have not

  1211. seen, and

  1212. you can recall

  1213. only in very

  1214. poor detail

  1215. what you've

  1216. seen in the

  1217. distant past.

  1218. To see the

  1219. reflection of

  1220. our future

  1221. selves in

  1222. Christ, we

  1223. must study

  1224. him like

  1225. the artist

  1226. studies their

  1227. subject.

  1228. We must

  1229. study Christ

  1230. if we are

  1231. to allow

  1232. his glorious

  1233. features to

  1234. move us to

  1235. joy in the

  1236. midst of

  1237. trials and

  1238. make this

  1239. mind shift

  1240. that James

  1241. is speaking

  1242. of.

  1243. It's at this

  1244. point though

  1245. that we may

  1246. need to pause

  1247. for a moment

  1248. and consider

  1249. briefly whether

  1250. God is not

  1251. actually calling

  1252. you to a

  1253. more fundamental

  1254. mind shift.

  1255. It's possible

  1256. that you attend

  1257. church and

  1258. even identify

  1259. as a Christian

  1260. but may have

  1261. never seen

  1262. Christ's glory.

  1263. It's possible

  1264. that you have

  1265. heard that

  1266. Jesus died

  1267. and rose

  1268. again but

  1269. have never

  1270. internalized the

  1271. fact that he

  1272. died and

  1273. rose for you.

  1274. It's possible

  1275. that you have

  1276. heard Jesus'

  1277. words but have

  1278. never really

  1279. taken him at

  1280. his word.

  1281. If that's you

  1282. this morning,

  1283. God is calling

  1284. you to a more

  1285. fundamental mind

  1286. shift.

  1287. God is calling

  1288. you to turn

  1289. to him in

  1290. repentance and

  1291. faith.

  1292. For without

  1293. this mind

  1294. shift there is

  1295. no crown

  1296. of life.

  1297. You are

  1298. running a race

  1299. where there is

  1300. no finish line

  1301. and you remain

  1302. in your sins.

  1303. If that's you

  1304. this morning,

  1305. God is calling

  1306. you to entrust

  1307. yourself to

  1308. Christ for the

  1309. forgiveness of

  1310. your sins.

  1311. God is calling

  1312. you to receive

  1313. the promise

  1314. of life,

  1315. the crown of

  1316. life that he

  1317. holds out in

  1318. his gospel.

  1319. But to those

  1320. of us who

  1321. have made

  1322. this more

  1323. fundamental

  1324. mind shift

  1325. and received

  1326. what Christ

  1327. promises,

  1328. God is calling

  1329. us again once

  1330. more to see

  1331. the beauty and

  1332. glory of this

  1333. promise.

  1334. He's calling

  1335. us to see the

  1336. goodness and

  1337. the perfection

  1338. of his gift

  1339. once more so

  1340. that it might

  1341. begin us a

  1342. movement that

  1343. will bring us

  1344. to regard trials

  1345. with joy.

  1346. So in

  1347. closing I

  1348. invite you

  1349. to meditate

  1350. now quietly

  1351. on where you

  1352. may need to

  1353. make this

  1354. mind shift

  1355. in your

  1356. life.

  1357. There will

  1358. be a

  1359. tremendous

  1360. range of

  1361. experiences

  1362. in a group

  1363. of people

  1364. this large.

  1365. There will

  1366. be people who

  1367. feel like it's

  1368. an impossibility,

  1369. that joy is

  1370. an impossibility,

  1371. that they're

  1372. being stretched

  1373. so far beyond

  1374. their capacity

  1375. to rejoice

  1376. in their

  1377. salvation.

  1378. others will

  1379. have perhaps

  1380. gone through

  1381. trials in

  1382. their past

  1383. and remember

  1384. this difficulty

  1385. well, and

  1386. there will be

  1387. yet others

  1388. for whom

  1389. these difficulties

  1390. lie in the

  1391. future.

  1392. Wherever God's

  1393. word meets us

  1394. this morning,

  1395. let us allow

  1396. to bring our

  1397. eyes to us

  1398. once more on

  1399. the perfection

  1400. and completion

  1401. of the crown

  1402. of life.

  1403. Let us gain a

  1404. fresh glimpse

  1405. of Christ in

  1406. his glory so

  1407. that we will be

  1408. moved to the

  1409. prospect of

  1410. being like

  1411. him.

  1412. Let us

  1413. allow ourselves

  1414. once more to

  1415. be transfixed

  1416. by his beauty

  1417. so that we

  1418. will be moved

  1419. at the joy

  1420. of attaining

  1421. to his full

  1422. stature.

  1423. Let us pray.

  1424. Loving

  1425. Father, we

  1426. thank you that

  1427. you have

  1428. revealed your

  1429. Son.

  1430. We thank

  1431. you that we

  1432. see him in

  1433. the precious

  1434. words of his

  1435. gospel.

  1436. Lord, we

  1437. ask that you

  1438. would bring us

  1439. to see once

  1440. again a

  1441. reflection of

  1442. our future

  1443. selves in

  1444. his face and

  1445. sustain us,

  1446. Lord, and

  1447. bring us to

  1448. the joy of

  1449. our salvation,

  1450. which as

  1451. Nehemiah

  1452. reminds us,

  1453. is our

  1454. strength.

  1455. And we

  1456. ask this for

  1457. the glory of

  1458. your Son

  1459. until the day

  1460. he returns.

  1461. Amen.
