  1. Amen. I'm pleased to have a seat. Can everybody hear me okay? There I am. Excellent. Well,

  2. my name is Graham, the pastor here at the church, and it's a real joy to welcome you

  3. here, especially perhaps if this is your first time here, spoken to a few new folks. You're

  4. so welcome. We just hope you have a really encouraging time with us this morning, and

  5. particularly as we come to God's words now. So, can I invite you to turn back to Luke

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  6. chapter 13 and those verses that Alice read for us earlier. So, we're going to camp out

  7. this morning as we get back into Luke. But as we come to God's word now, why don't

  8. we just pause and let's pray together. Father, we thank you so much for your goodness. Lord,

  9. you are a good, good God. And we thank you so much for the privilege it is to gather, Lord,

  10. as your people this morning and to sing your praises. Thank you for the truths that are included

  11. in those songs that we are singing, that we've been reminding ourselves that you are a big

  12. God. You are the creator of the ends of the earth, and you are worthy of all praise.

  13. And so, as we turn to your words now, Father, we pray that you would speak deep into our lives,

  14. that we would leave here this morning, Father, changed because we've encountered you.

  15. So, Father, be with us now, we ask for your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  16. Amen. One of the TV shows that Alex, my wife, and I love to watch is called Dragon's Den. I don't know

  17. if anyone else here loves a bit of Dragon's Den. But one of the stars of Dragon's Den, my favorite

  18. guy on the show, is this man. He's called Peter Jones. I just look at this guy. He's not great.

  19. Six foot seven. Highly intelligent. Sharp dresser. Self-made millionaire. Oh, he's a cracking guy.

  20. Do you know why people love this man? They love Peter Jones because he's got a reputation for being

  21. a straight talker. In fact, so loved is he for this, that when it was rumored this time last year

  22. that he might run for prime minister, he was interviewed on this morning. I don't watch this

  23. morning, but he was interviewed on this morning, Philip Schofield, because he was thinking about

  24. becoming prime minister. Somebody tweeted in, I'd love Peter Jones to be prime minister.

  25. He wouldn't mince his words. He'd tell us exactly how it is, and that's what we need. Hashtag this

  26. morning. I don't know about you, but maybe it's just a Scott in me that I love a straight talker.

  27. Love a straight talker. In our world of photoshopping, in our world of spin doctoring, I find it

  28. so refreshing when somebody just tells me the truth of how things are. And what we're going

  29. to see this morning as we get into Luke 13 is we're going to hear three truths from the

  30. straight talking Jesus. Three truths from the straight talking Jesus. So if you've got Luke

  31. 13 there, let me just, before we dive into it, and particularly since we've taken a break

  32. from Luke over the summer, it's worth getting our bearings as to where we are in Luke's story.

  33. And so by way of quickly refreshing our memories, let me just draw your attention as we kind

  34. of skim the first 13 chapters to two words. And they both begin with C, because I love

  35. alliteration. Here's the first C. It has to do with the reason why Luke has written his

  36. gospel in the first place, and it's the word certainty. Luke has written this account,

  37. this gospel for Theophilus, this man who's commissioned him to go and do a bit of detective work.

  38. So, Luke, if you go and research the facts, if you uncover every stone, if you speak to

  39. the witnesses, if you hunt from top to bottom, and if you present that to me, then I can know

  40. for myself the truth about this man Jesus Christ. And Luke, the good doctor that he is, he's done

  41. just that, and he's put this material together in a way that is coherent and logical so that

  42. Theophilus can have confidence that Jesus is who he says he is. Now, the second C has to

  43. do with where we are in the story. That's the word cross. Verse 21 of chapter 9, maybe you

  44. just want to skim there, back a few pages. Jesus is resolutely on his way to the city of Jerusalem,

  45. Jerusalem, where he's going to go and he's going to offer up his life of his free will on the cross.

  46. And so, on his way to Jerusalem, as he's been encountering people, he's been teaching both his

  47. disciples and the watching world what it means to truly follow after him. So, that's the big question

  48. of where we are in Luke's gospel at this point. What does it mean to follow this king? And straight

  49. off the back, and I suggest that that is a wonderful question to ask yourself this morning.

  50. What does it truly mean to follow after this king? So, it's into this backdrop that Jesus delivers his

  51. three straight-talking truths. Now, if you want to follow along this morning, the first truth is found

  52. at verses 1 to 9, and it's a truth for the people. So, we pick up the story, travel with me, verse 1,

  53. with Jesus, who at this point in time is gaining both in popularity and he's raising eyebrows.

  54. He's confronted by some people desperate to know his take on current events. Now, we don't know much

  55. about the specifics of these events, but the people know, check it out, that Pilate, the Roman official,

  56. has had some Galileans put to death. And Jesus knows of a similar tragedy and Siloam when a tower has collapsed,

  57. killing 18 people. Real lives have been lost here, and real pain has been suffered here.

  58. And as you can imagine, there's some real questions to be asked here.

  59. And the people must have been asking Jesus, why did this happen? Why did this happen? It's a real question.

  60. But we need to get to the mindset behind their question. I was trying to ask myself this week in preparation,

  61. trying to put myself in the shoes of these people who are asking Jesus, what answer are they looking for?

  62. What are they wanting Jesus to clarify? And even though the people don't say it,

  63. Jesus hears this mindset in their voices, and he knows that it's lurking in their hearts.

  64. Because they look on at current events, and they think that these people, these Galileans,

  65. must have done something so horrible in the sight of God, for God to allow something so horrible

  66. to happen to them. Let's flip it another way around, the equation.

  67. It's that extraordinary tragedy equals extraordinary guilt.

  68. So they look at these current events, and that is how they perceive what has happened.

  69. That's how they understand what has happened.

  70. And if you think about it, by implication then, that means because I'm alright,

  71. because I'm not suffering like these people have suffered,

  72. it must mean that I'm doing alright.

  73. It must mean I'm doing okay.

  74. I don't know if you...

  75. I mean, really, it's just karma playing out, isn't it, in religious dress?

  76. It's karma.

  77. I don't know if you've reminded me this week of the old saying about the karma restaurant,

  78. where you go and there's no menus, you just get served what you deserve.

  79. This is karma.

  80. This is how people view and understand these current events.

  81. And so they ask Jesus, what do you make of this Jesus?

  82. Tell us how we're supposed to understand this.

  83. And this week of all weeks, I guess that is a very real and a very raw question, is it not?

  84. As we look at our news, as we look at Hurricane Irma causing devastation in the Caribbean,

  85. and as we look at the strongest earthquake in a decade hitting Mexico,

  86. what was it, killing 60 people?

  87. And if you look at the floods in Houston that happened only a couple of weeks ago,

  88. and this question all of a sudden becomes really raw and really live, doesn't it?

  89. And so I guess as a reader looking onto this,

  90. I'm really interested to see how the one through whom all creation was made answers that question.

  91. How is Jesus going to answer this question?

  92. Is he going to be like a politician?

  93. Is he going to duck the question and answer another one?

  94. Is that the thing that's what I would have done?

  95. Is he going to duck it? No.

  96. Do you see how he emphatically answers that question?

  97. No.

  98. No.

  99. And Jesus, the master teacher that he is,

  100. he answers their question by telling them not only that they are asking the wrong question,

  101. but he directs them towards asking the right question.

  102. The question is not primarily,

  103. why do these things happen in life?

  104. Although that is a real question.

  105. The question you need to be asking yourself is,

  106. what does the fact that these things happen in life tell you about life?

  107. You know, it was C.S. Lewis who said that pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

  108. Time is short.

  109. This is what Jesus is saying.

  110. Life is fragile.

  111. And the world is not as it was created to be.

  112. And the most urgent issue, says Jesus,

  113. it's not other people's souls.

  114. It's your soul.

  115. If you don't get right with God, you too are going to,

  116. what's the word he uses?

  117. Perish.

  118. If you don't get right with God,

  119. the reality check here for these people is that judgment is coming for you.

  120. One day you will stand before your creator.

  121. And so will you listen to God on his megaphone?

  122. Rico Tice, the author of The Christianity Explored,

  123. tells this story about how he was swimming in Australia one time.

  124. Really wanted to go swimming.

  125. So off he gets with his top.

  126. Down he heads to the water.

  127. He's all about to jump in.

  128. And his friend shouts over,

  129. Rico, what are you doing?

  130. And Rico says, I really want to go for a swim.

  131. And his friend points to a sign that says,

  132. Shark's Danger.

  133. And Rico says, I really want to go for a swim.

  134. And his friend says, well, listen, you do whatever you want, mate.

  135. You do whatever you want.

  136. But you've got to ask yourself at some point,

  137. is that warning sign there to kill your joy?

  138. Or is it there to save your life?

  139. And that's exactly how Jesus' words come to these first hearers

  140. and exactly how they come to us this morning.

  141. Here is a loving warning from the King of Kings.

  142. And what does he call on people to do?

  143. Repent.

  144. Greek word there, metanoia.

  145. Present tense word, turn.

  146. Turn from trusting in yourself and living for yourself.

  147. Realize the road that you're on.

  148. And turn and trust in and live for God.

  149. For what is it we were singing earlier?

  150. For he alone can rescue.

  151. And as if to drive home this point,

  152. he tells them this parable of verse 6

  153. of a man who owns a vineyard.

  154. In that vineyard there was a fig tree

  155. and that fig tree is just not performing as it should.

  156. The tree should have been full of fruit,

  157. but year after year he comes back

  158. and he looks on this tree

  159. and he's just massively disappointed.

  160. How long has this tree had in the passage?

  161. Three years.

  162. Quite rightly, the owner questions,

  163. why should this unproductive tree

  164. continue to take up space in my vineyard?

  165. The vine dresser pleads the case of the fig tree,

  166. convinces the owner to give it another year,

  167. and we're not hopeful,

  168. but the fig tree has one more year to produce fruit.

  169. And like that unfruitful fig tree,

  170. the invitation to the people

  171. is to take advantage of the grace,

  172. the space for grace before judgment comes.

  173. First truth from the straight-talking Jesus,

  174. time is short.

  175. Time is short.

  176. I don't want to dwell too long here this morning.

  177. I want to allow Jesus' words to speak for themselves,

  178. except to ask you to ponder in the quietness

  179. of your own heart

  180. whether you need to do business with God this morning.

  181. And if you think about it,

  182. the very fact that God in the flesh,

  183. Jesus Christ,

  184. has come down to find us,

  185. has stepped into our mess

  186. to tell us this,

  187. is quite amazing.

  188. the lengths that God has gone to

  189. to get this message to us.

  190. Why?

  191. Because he loves us.

  192. And the lengths went further still

  193. as this man,

  194. this man who presents this warning,

  195. is on his way to the cross

  196. to do what?

  197. To lay down his life,

  198. to die for people's sins

  199. so that we could be reconciled

  200. to the God who made us.

  201. That is the first truth,

  202. and that is a heavy truth this morning,

  203. the first truth from the straight-talking Jesus.

  204. is that time is running out.

  205. It's a truth for the people.

  206. Second truth, verses 10 to 17,

  207. is a truth for the leaders.

  208. Verse 10,

  209. Jesus is teaching in the synagogue

  210. one Sabbath day,

  211. and who does he see there?

  212. He sees a woman.

  213. Now it's really interesting,

  214. if you want to follow it with me,

  215. look how Luke tells this story.

  216. What does he know about this woman?

  217. What are we told about this woman?

  218. That she was disabled.

  219. Verse 11,

  220. she was bent over,

  221. and she could not stand up.

  222. Now how long has she been like that?

  223. She's been like it 18 years.

  224. Now that's a long time.

  225. 18 years.

  226. Just picture that in your mind.

  227. 18 years.

  228. Got some students here this morning,

  229. that is four and a half degrees.

  230. 18 years.

  231. This woman has been like this.

  232. And we've got to say,

  233. this woman as we meet her here,

  234. doesn't have an awful lot going for her.

  235. In fact, she epitomizes everything

  236. that Luke has been telling us so far

  237. about those who are lowly,

  238. about those who are poor.

  239. And notice that Jesus sees her.

  240. And there's a wonderful truth there,

  241. that this woman didn't come forward to Jesus

  242. asking him to help her out.

  243. The initiative here is all of Jesus.

  244. It is all of Jesus.

  245. And is that not a wonderful truth

  246. to ponder this morning?

  247. That he came down to find us.

  248. The initiative is all his in this passage.

  249. Jesus sees her,

  250. and he has compassion on her.

  251. He speaks to her.

  252. He lays his hand on her,

  253. as if to signify,

  254. I'm getting involved in this woman's pain.

  255. And he heals her.

  256. Now it is a beautiful Christ

  257. that we're presented with in these verses.

  258. A wonderful Jesus.

  259. Luke wants us to see that.

  260. Jesus gets involved in this woman's pain.

  261. He heals her.

  262. Here is another miracle announcing

  263. that the kingdom of God is here.

  264. Why?

  265. Because Jesus the King is here.

  266. And what is the result?

  267. She glorifies God.

  268. Glorifies God.

  269. Worship fills the synagogue.

  270. And we're thinking,

  271. yes, hallelujah.

  272. But not everybody feels that worship.

  273. Not everybody feels that sense of joy.

  274. Verse 14.

  275. We're introduced to this synagogue ruler.

  276. And look how Luke describes him.

  277. He's not just indifferent

  278. to what Jesus has done.

  279. He's indignant at what Jesus has done.

  280. We get the image there.

  281. His nostrils are flaring up.

  282. He is angry at what Jesus has done.

  283. Why?

  284. Not because of what Jesus has done.

  285. Because of when Jesus has done it.

  286. When has he done it?

  287. He's done it on the Sabbath.

  288. And look how this guy interacts here

  289. with the crowd.

  290. Does he speak to Jesus?

  291. No.

  292. He piously addresses the crowd about Jesus.

  293. Verse 14.

  294. You get six days to do that stuff.

  295. You get six other days to do that stuff.

  296. And understandably,

  297. the straight-talking Jesus

  298. takes exception to this man.

  299. What does he call him?

  300. You hypocrite.

  301. You hypocrites.

  302. He's talking about the lot of them.

  303. Because somehow it's become the norm

  304. to not view caring for your ox

  305. and your donkey in the Sabbath as work.

  306. But it's become the norm

  307. to view healing on the Sabbath as work.

  308. But more to the point,

  309. this man cares more for the health

  310. of his donkey

  311. than he does for the health

  312. of this woman.

  313. The very leaders of God's people

  314. who are supposed to be

  315. giving themselves for these people,

  316. supposed to be leading these people

  317. in obeying the word of the Lord,

  318. leading them in worship.

  319. And here they are,

  320. because of their hard hearts,

  321. neglecting God's people.

  322. And how they are treating this,

  323. what phrase does Jesus use,

  324. this daughter of Abraham?

  325. is case in point.

  326. I remember when I was a student,

  327. many moons ago,

  328. when I first lived on my own,

  329. my mom would phone me

  330. and she would say more than this,

  331. but she would often ask me,

  332. Graham, have you cleaned the oven?

  333. Have you cleaned the oven?

  334. And I would reply to her,

  335. Mom, I have nailed the oven.

  336. I have nailed the oven.

  337. And do you know what I meant by that?

  338. That's it.

  339. I've cleaned the outside.

  340. That's what I meant.

  341. I'd cleaned the outside.

  342. Mom, I've nailed it.

  343. So Mom would come up

  344. and she'd visit.

  345. And she wouldn't head straight

  346. for the oven,

  347. but I knew it was in her head.

  348. And she would go to the oven

  349. and she would see the pristine oven.

  350. She would just open the door

  351. and she would look in

  352. and she would say,

  353. Graham, you've got to be kidding me.

  354. So what Jesus is doing here

  355. with these hearts,

  356. of these people,

  357. he's just opening the oven door.

  358. What he finds

  359. is he opens this oven door,

  360. something clean in the outside,

  361. but something not pretty in the inside.

  362. Second truth from the straight talk in Jesus

  363. is that your hearts are bad.

  364. Do you notice that Luke tells us

  365. about these two groups?

  366. Jesus' adversaries,

  367. so those with hearts,

  368. just like the synagogue ruler,

  369. rejecting Christ

  370. and the people.

  371. And what are they doing?

  372. They're rejoicing at what God has done.

  373. And as Luke tells us this story,

  374. Theophilus,

  375. check out this guy's heart.

  376. And as readers,

  377. we're invited to ask ourselves

  378. this morning

  379. that if Jesus were to open

  380. that oven door of our hearts,

  381. what would he find inside?

  382. What would he find inside?

  383. Would he find somebody

  384. just cleaning the outside,

  385. but playing at it on the inside?

  386. And we're invited to ask,

  387. which group are we in?

  388. One commentator writes,

  389. Jesus is too great a figure

  390. to be left to neutrality.

  391. It's a great quote.

  392. Where are you this morning

  393. in relation to the Lord?

  394. The second truth

  395. from the straight talking Jesus

  396. is a truth for the leaders.

  397. And the third truth this morning

  398. and finally is

  399. verses 18 to 21.

  400. And it's a truth for the disciples.

  401. So Jesus addressing those listening

  402. tells them a reality

  403. about the kingdom of God.

  404. And it's simile time.

  405. I love similes.

  406. Simile time.

  407. What is the kingdom of God like?

  408. Now you can imagine

  409. you're in the crowd.

  410. The rising anticipation levels

  411. at this point

  412. as to what this man is going to say.

  413. What is he going to say next?

  414. Oh, I can't wait to hear it.

  415. Is the kingdom of God,

  416. is it like the blazing sun?

  417. Is it when it comes

  418. and all its radiance,

  419. is it going to blitz away

  420. all the darkness?

  421. Is it like,

  422. is it like that scene in Aladdin

  423. when Prince Ali comes to town

  424. with the elephants in the parade?

  425. Is this king going to come in

  426. and just blitz the place?

  427. Oh boy, I can't wait

  428. to hear what he says.

  429. What simile will Jesus choose?

  430. Well, it's a rhetorical question.

  431. Do you like rhetorical questions?

  432. Just checking.

  433. It's a test.

  434. You're still awake.

  435. Jesus answers this question for them.

  436. What is the kingdom of God like?

  437. What is it like?

  438. It's like a mustard seed.

  439. It's like a what?

  440. It's like a mustard seed.

  441. The smallest seed

  442. that these people could imagine.

  443. Barely visible to the eye.

  444. And it's like that,

  445. a small pinch of yeast

  446. that you would add

  447. to three measures of flour.

  448. Three measures of flour,

  449. 50 pounds of dough.

  450. That's the similes

  451. that Jesus gives you

  452. for the kingdom of God.

  453. Like a tiny little mustard seed

  454. and like a teensy little bit of leaven.

  455. Now, what would your word associations be

  456. if you were in the crowd

  457. listening to this?

  458. Unimpressive.

  459. Insignificant.

  460. This is the kingdom of God?

  461. Imagine you were one of the people

  462. listening in.

  463. What would you have made

  464. of Jesus' words here?

  465. Because there are two truths

  466. at the heart of what he says here.

  467. Firstly,

  468. and again,

  469. alliteration,

  470. forgive me,

  471. the posture of the kingdom.

  472. If the kingdom of God

  473. is like a mustard seed,

  474. then Jesus is the mustard seed king.

  475. Now, we've seen that

  476. all the way through

  477. Luke's gospel so far.

  478. Born to a peasant girl.

  479. Born in a stable.

  480. Hanging out with sinners.

  481. A bunch of unimpressive

  482. looking followers.

  483. Rejected by his own.

  484. This is this king.

  485. And here he is

  486. inviting people

  487. to come and follow him.

  488. To follow the guy

  489. who is being persecuted.

  490. To follow the man

  491. with the target on his back.

  492. To follow the guy

  493. who has just gone public

  494. with the fact

  495. that he is journeying

  496. by his own accord

  497. to his death.

  498. But following straight off

  499. the back of the posture

  500. of the kingdom

  501. comes the promise

  502. of the kingdom.

  503. That even though

  504. this may look insignificant

  505. and even though

  506. the lives of the people

  507. if they decide

  508. to follow Jesus

  509. will look insignificant,

  510. Jesus wants his disciples

  511. to know

  512. that no matter

  513. how insignificant

  514. and foolish looking

  515. it looks,

  516. that the kingdom of God

  517. comes with heaven's guarantee

  518. that God

  519. will make it grow.

  520. And he'll make it grow

  521. and he'll transform it

  522. from something menial

  523. and he'll grow it

  524. to something magnificent.

  525. This is the promise.

  526. The third truth

  527. from the straight talking

  528. Jesus

  529. to those who would

  530. follow after him

  531. is the kingdom of God

  532. might look unimpressive

  533. but God is going

  534. to make it grow.

  535. And so as we work

  536. towards a close this morning

  537. let me just make

  538. two points

  539. by way of application.

  540. So this mustard seed king

  541. is here calling

  542. his followers

  543. to embrace

  544. and adopt

  545. mustard seed

  546. lives.

  547. So to follow

  548. this king,

  549. to follow Jesus

  550. is to sign up

  551. for a life

  552. that is very

  553. unimpressive.

  554. Now let me ask you

  555. when was the last time

  556. in your life

  557. that you felt

  558. unimpressive

  559. for following Jesus?

  560. Alex and I

  561. were at a wedding

  562. down south

  563. a few months ago

  564. and one of those

  565. strange weddings

  566. where we knew

  567. nobody apart

  568. from the bride

  569. and the groom

  570. and being an extrovert

  571. I loved that challenge

  572. so I'm speaking

  573. to people

  574. giving away

  575. my game secrets

  576. here but my first

  577. question

  578. where are you from?

  579. Second question

  580. what do you do?

  581. Going around

  582. in a circle

  583. speaking to people

  584. one guy

  585. owns the local

  586. award winning restaurant

  587. great chap

  588. really good guy

  589. next person

  590. doctor

  591. next person

  592. working in

  593. sustainable development

  594. next person

  595. working in the

  596. charity sector

  597. and I'm just

  598. waiting for it

  599. I know it's coming

  600. Green what do you do?

  601. I'm a pastor of a church

  602. I'm a minister of a church

  603. conversation dead

  604. dead

  605. never seen people

  606. head for the canopy

  607. so quick in my life

  608. conversation dead

  609. and I felt

  610. unimpressive

  611. for following this king

  612. unimpressive

  613. when did you last

  614. feel unimpressive

  615. for following this king

  616. as we embrace

  617. this lifestyle

  618. think about it

  619. tomorrow

  620. you'll be asked

  621. I'm sure

  622. for those of you

  623. who go to the office

  624. who work

  625. what did you do

  626. yesterday

  627. I went to church

  628. and imagine for a lot

  629. of us that is

  630. conversation over

  631. so what do we do

  632. in those moments

  633. well following the

  634. mustard seed king

  635. is tough

  636. as we embrace

  637. his lifestyle

  638. what he's calling us

  639. to do here

  640. the posture

  641. but let's be so

  642. encouraged

  643. by the mustard seed

  644. king's promise

  645. because we stand here

  646. what a glorious

  647. privilege it is to stand

  648. where we do in history

  649. we stand

  650. in God's story

  651. at this point

  652. and I guess in particular

  653. we stand

  654. the other side

  655. of the cross

  656. we know

  657. the mustard seed king

  658. met a cross shaped

  659. death

  660. and if ever

  661. there was a mustard seed

  662. moment in this man's

  663. life in history

  664. surely it was Calvary

  665. Jesus suspended

  666. on the cross

  667. surrounded by a handful

  668. of followers

  669. most of whom

  670. have scattered from him

  671. but the truth

  672. that this king rose

  673. and this king

  674. has ascended

  675. and this king

  676. rules

  677. and this king

  678. reigns

  679. and this king's

  680. church by his spirit

  681. it grew

  682. and it grew

  683. and it grew

  684. now what odds

  685. would you have got

  686. back in 33

  687. roughly AD

  688. that 2000 odd years

  689. later not only

  690. would we be here

  691. but our voices

  692. would join in

  693. with an estimated

  694. 2.2 billion people

  695. around the world

  696. who are following

  697. this king

  698. surely that would make

  699. 5000 to 1

  700. unless the city

  701. winning the league

  702. a few years ago

  703. looked like child's play

  704. would it not

  705. and yet here we stand

  706. this morning

  707. knowing the truth

  708. of that

  709. and the incredible news

  710. is that this king's church

  711. is still growing

  712. and it's still growing

  713. and it's still growing

  714. you know I heard a statistic

  715. recently

  716. that it's estimated

  717. I don't know how they

  718. figure this stuff out

  719. but it's estimated

  720. that in China

  721. 19,000 people

  722. come to faith in Jesus

  723. a day

  724. a day

  725. and that's estimated

  726. to go as high

  727. as 48,000 in 2025

  728. now so often

  729. our problem is

  730. that we take

  731. how we see

  732. things going out here

  733. and we just project

  734. it onto the world

  735. this king's kingdom

  736. is growing

  737. and we might not

  738. experience anything

  739. like those numbers

  740. in Scotland

  741. but let me tell you

  742. I've been so encouraged

  743. this week

  744. and over the past few weeks

  745. to speak from church leaders

  746. from across the country

  747. and to hear about

  748. so many churches

  749. being planted

  750. in our nation

  751. Huntley

  752. Haddington

  753. Dundee

  754. Livingston

  755. Inverness

  756. Aberdeen

  757. why?

  758. because this promise

  759. is true

  760. that the kingdom of God

  761. is like a mustard seed

  762. it looks unimpressive

  763. it has small beginnings

  764. but our great God

  765. will grow it

  766. into something spectacular

  767. as he saves men

  768. and women

  769. boys and girls

  770. from across this globe

  771. who put their faith

  772. in his son Jesus Christ

  773. and in this all glorious

  774. and all conquering king

  775. he will grow it

  776. and because I see

  777. and because this is where

  778. we should end this morning

  779. because we see

  780. the proof of that truth

  781. it should encourage us

  782. to build our lives

  783. on every single word

  784. that proceeds

  785. from the mouth of the Lord

  786. that's the confidence

  787. we can take this morning

  788. these straight talking truths

  789. from the straight talking king

  790. are hard

  791. but we can build our lives

  792. because we see the proof

  793. of the truth

  794. crown him

  795. the Lord of heaven

  796. enthroned

  797. in worlds above

  798. crown him

  799. the king

  800. to whom is given

  801. the wondrous name of love

  802. crown him

  803. with many crowns

  804. as thrones

  805. before him fall

  806. crown him

  807. ye kings

  808. with many crowns

  809. for he is king

  810. of all

  811. three truths

  812. from the straight talking

  813. Jesus this morning

  814. Luke chapter 13

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  815. time is short

  816. your hearts are bad

  817. the kingdom will grow

  818. just before we pray

  819. why don't we just have

  820. a moment of silence

  821. just for a few moments

  822. as we allow

  823. just before we head

  824. into a busy week

  825. let's just allow

  826. God's word

  827. by his spirit

  828. to fill our minds

  829. and our hearts

  830. just before we finish

  831. and so maybe just in the quiet

  832. I wonder if some of us

  833. need to

  834. crown him

  835. the Lord of all

  836. to take our crown

  837. off our own heads

  838. and to place it

  839. on Christ

  840. Father we thank you

  841. so much this morning

  842. that you are a good God

  843. Father thank you so much

  844. for the truth of your word

  845. that we have it

  846. in our own language

  847. that we can read it

  848. Father that we have

  849. the freedom to meet

  850. together

  851. to worship you

  852. and Father we ask

  853. ask Lord

  854. that you would help us

  855. to heed the truth

  856. of your word

  857. this morning

  858. and you would help us

  859. to hold to the truth

  860. of your word

  861. this morning

  862. Father may Jesus

  863. be ever more glorious

  864. in our eyes

  865. as a result of us

  866. being here this morning

  867. and it's in his glorious name

  868. we pray

  869. Amen
