  1. Well, good evening, folks. It is great to see you. Thank you so much for coming out today.

  2. What a joyous day. I've loved it. Thank you so much for your encouragement.

  3. And the fact that you're here this evening, I know today's been a long day as well.

  4. It's going to be really good. I have really enjoyed getting into the life of Samson this week.

  5. We're going to be looking at Samson this Sunday evening and next Sunday evening as we find him in Judges 13.

  6. You might want to turn there now and grab a Bible. This fascinating character.

  7. And it's been a real joy to walk with him this week and to think about Samson, the saviour, as we meet him in the book of Judges.

  8. So what we're going to do, just to mix things up a little bit, is we are going to have a five-minute introduction to Samson.

  9. I'm just going to take us through some of the big things to look for, particularly as we come to the reading.

  10. We're going to read chapters 13, 14 and 15 together.

  11. And then we're going to have a song and then we're going to come back for the rest of the sermon.

  12. Does that sound okay?

  13. Okay, Judges 13, that's where we are.

  14. But why don't we pray just as we come to God's words together now.

  15. Forever you are faithful.

  16. Forever you are strong.

  17. Forever you are with us forever.

  18. Thank you, Father, that there is no shadow of change with you.

  19. And it's to you we look this evening.

  20. And Father, we ask by your Holy Spirit you would come.

  21. And Lord, you would work in our midst.

  22. Father, that as your word is preached this evening.

  23. Father, that your voice would be heard.

  24. And most of all, Lord, you would lift our eyes to the greatness of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  25. In whose name we pray.

  26. Amen.

  27. So I wonder when was the last time you got really excited about a birth.

  28. So in our household at the minute, our one-year-old daughter, Grace, her favorite cuddly toy is her panda.

  29. She absolutely loves her panda.

  30. So you can imagine when we heard news of a pregnancy.

  31. Does anyone know who this is out of interest?

  32. It's Chan Chan who looked up.

  33. So when you heard that she was pregnant, you can imagine the excitement in our family.

  34. Sadly, the rumors were going around that she was going to have some cubs later in the year.

  35. Fascinated were our girls.

  36. And this was a story, I don't know if you remember when it came out.

  37. It was a story that captured the hearts of our nation.

  38. Because it's something we'd been hoping for for a very long time.

  39. I think I tweeted pandemonium.

  40. And it got a few likes.

  41. So the pandas.

  42. We were interested in the pandas.

  43. We were longing for this day to happen.

  44. We were longing for these births or births to happen.

  45. And then it was finally announced that it wasn't going to happen.

  46. And I had to break the news to our little girls.

  47. It's not going to happen.

  48. Well, here we are in Judges 13 this evening.

  49. And I want us to transition from a nation, from a people longing for a birth to happen that didn't happen.

  50. So here we are in Judges 13.

  51. And as the readers of the book up until this point, we've been accustomed to this cycle that we've seen in Judges.

  52. This cycle that's been ongoing throughout the book.

  53. Step 1 of the cycle, the people sin against God.

  54. The people turn away from their Creator and their Redeemer.

  55. They turn away from the Lord.

  56. Step 2, slavery.

  57. God judges the people and He delivers them into the hands of their enemies.

  58. Step 3, the people say sorry.

  59. They cry out to God.

  60. God, would you have mercy on us?

  61. God, deliver us.

  62. And God in His grace, He hears the cry of a people who have absolutely no right to His ear.

  63. And God, step 4, saves them.

  64. People saved.

  65. God raises up a judge who acts to save the people.

  66. Step 5, silence or rest.

  67. God gives His people rest through this judge.

  68. Well, Judges 13, we kind of have it again.

  69. And I'm thinking as I'm reading this through this week, oh, here we go again.

  70. Here we go again.

  71. We've seen this pattern before.

  72. First one, the people of Israel, looking at the screen, people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  73. So they sin.

  74. We've seen it before.

  75. Seen it before.

  76. Sin.

  77. God delivers them into the hands of the Philistines.

  78. For 40 years, do you notice that in the text?

  79. 40 years, that's a long time.

  80. Long time for these people to be in captivity.

  81. Slavery.

  82. And what are we expecting next as we read this narrative?

  83. This is where I'm looking for a bit of interaction here.

  84. What are we expecting next?

  85. Third step.

  86. Sorry.

  87. We're expecting the people at this point to cry out to God, are we not?

  88. This is what we've seen in the cycle.

  89. People to cry out to God.

  90. God, would you save us?

  91. God, would you have mercy on us?

  92. God, would you deliver us from the hands of our enemies?

  93. But here's the question.

  94. Do you see, do we see any crying as we come to chapter 13?

  95. There's no cry.

  96. Why?

  97. Well, you see, it's not just a repeating cycle that we've noticed that we've journeyed through judges.

  98. It's a downward cycle.

  99. And I think the author is telling us here that things have got so bad in Israel that the people have actually grown accustomed to a life of slavery.

  100. And they are blind to seeing the folly of their ways because if they saw the folly of their ways, they would turn back to God and cry out to him and he would save them.

  101. But these people aren't bothered about the situation as we step into chapter 13.

  102. They're not crying out to God.

  103. And so it's in this context that Samson is born.

  104. To people, to a nation, not longing for a birth to happen that did happen.

  105. So here's what we're going to do now.

  106. We're going to read chapters 13, 14, and 15.

  107. And this is the story of Samson's birth and life.

  108. And here's what I want you to do as you read through these chapters.

  109. I want to get us thinking.

  110. I want to get us into the text this evening.

  111. So Hazel is going to come and read chapter 13 for us.

  112. And Neil is going to come and read chapters 14 and 15 for us.

  113. They're the two sections.

  114. Chapter 13, Samson's birth.

  115. Chapters 14 and 15, Samson's life.

  116. And after each reading, we're going to pause for 30 seconds.

  117. And hopefully you've got a sermon outline.

  118. I saw Alistair handing them out on your way in.

  119. Hopefully you've got a sermon outline.

  120. And here's what I want you to think about.

  121. The question I want you to ask yourself.

  122. How am I feeling after chapter 13?

  123. And how as a reader am I left feeling after chapter 15?

  124. If you could sum it up in one word, what would that one word be?

  125. Now here's the big question of this sermon this evening.

  126. Here's the big question that we're asked,

  127. the writer asks us from this section of Judges.

  128. Will the talk of Samson's birth be matched by the walk of Samson's life?

  129. So that's the big question for us this evening.

  130. The big question we're going to think about.

  131. And hopefully the big question we're going to answer

  132. as we journey through these chapters together.

  133. Thank you, Hazel and Neil.

  134. So here we go.

  135. Will the talk of Samson's birth be matched by the walk of Samson's life?

  136. So I wonder what words you scribbled down at the end of chapter 13.

  137. I wonder if it was something like this.

  138. Here's what I wrote down.

  139. Optimistic.

  140. Optimistic.

  141. Intrigued.

  142. Anyone?

  143. Excited.

  144. Anticipating.

  145. All those kind of words come to mind when you read chapter 13.

  146. Now let me just help you see my thought process

  147. as I travelled through chapter 13.

  148. There were four grounds for hope that I saw in chapter 13.

  149. Four signs that got me really excited

  150. that we could be on to a winner here with Samson.

  151. Here's the first ground for hope.

  152. The numbers.

  153. So there's been 11 judges so far in the book of Numbers.

  154. Sorry, in the book of Numbers, in the book of Judges.

  155. 11 judges so far.

  156. Samson is the 12th judge.

  157. Now that gets me intrigued.

  158. Thinking to myself,

  159. will Samson,

  160. will he be the judge who finally,

  161. not only saves Israel from their enemies,

  162. but will he be the saviour

  163. who representatively leads Israel in worship and obedience to the Lord

  164. that Israel so far in this book have failed to do.

  165. He's the 12th judge.

  166. And the arrival of Samson also marks the beginning of the sixth cycle in this book.

  167. Each judge thus far has delivered Israel from their enemies,

  168. brings in,

  169. ushers in a period of rest for the people.

  170. But that only lasts as long as the judge has lived.

  171. And as a reader,

  172. I'm thinking to myself,

  173. will Samson be the judge who finally brings the nation of Israel,

  174. as it were,

  175. into the seven

  176. and bring God's people lasting

  177. and complete rest

  178. from their enemies.

  179. He's the 12th

  180. and he's the 6th.

  181. And as a reader,

  182. I'm optimistic for Samson at this point.

  183. Here's the second ground for hope,

  184. the announcement.

  185. We're introduced to this couple.

  186. Do you see them opening verses?

  187. Chapter 13.

  188. Manoah and his wife.

  189. Who appears to them?

  190. An angel of the Lord.

  191. An awesome messenger of God

  192. appears to this woman.

  193. And he delivers a message

  194. that God once again is acting by his grace

  195. to save his people,

  196. his captive people,

  197. his wavered people.

  198. God is going to act in his grace towards them.

  199. And the angel announces to the woman

  200. that although she is barren,

  201. that she will conceive

  202. and she will bear a son.

  203. Now this barren woman pattern

  204. is something that is frequent in Scripture.

  205. Sarah,

  206. Rebecca,

  207. Rachel,

  208. after the book of Judges,

  209. we've got Hannah,

  210. we've got Elizabeth

  211. and here again is God by his grace

  212. looking upon the humble estate

  213. of this barren woman.

  214. And we're left as readers

  215. wondering in anticipation,

  216. what exactly is this child

  217. going to turn out to be?

  218. Third ground for hope is the calling.

  219. This woman,

  220. do you notice it?

  221. She's given clear instructions.

  222. Verse 4.

  223. What is she to do?

  224. Or rather,

  225. what is she not to do?

  226. Drink no wine.

  227. Touch no unclean thing.

  228. Presumably because if she does,

  229. and she will vicariously

  230. taint the child within her.

  231. And what of this boy?

  232. Two things.

  233. Do you notice in the passage?

  234. Firstly,

  235. he will be a Nazarite.

  236. Now a Nazarite was someone

  237. who would yield their life

  238. completely to God.

  239. God,

  240. you are wholly mine.

  241. Wholly apart,

  242. dedicated to him.

  243. Wholly apart,

  244. to be focused on him.

  245. You find that vow

  246. to be a Nazarite

  247. laid out in number 6.

  248. If you want to maybe

  249. check it out later.

  250. Three expressed things

  251. that a Nazarite had to do.

  252. Or rather,

  253. three expressed things

  254. that a Nazarite had not to do.

  255. No wine,

  256. no razors,

  257. no contact with dead bodies.

  258. And we're excited

  259. because normally

  260. this is a voluntary vow

  261. that people make.

  262. But here,

  263. this child

  264. is being called apart,

  265. set apart by God

  266. to be wholly devoted by him.

  267. To see it,

  268. this boy will be a Nazarite.

  269. That's exciting.

  270. Secondly,

  271. he will be a saviour.

  272. Verse 5.

  273. He'll begin to save Israel

  274. from the hands

  275. of the Philistines.

  276. This is what this child

  277. in this woman's womb

  278. is being called to be.

  279. And this is what this child

  280. in this woman's womb

  281. is being called to do.

  282. Oh,

  283. that's greatly exciting.

  284. And the fourth ground

  285. for hope

  286. is the stirring.

  287. Verse 24.

  288. Feel the anticipation

  289. that the writer

  290. is creating here.

  291. Verse 24.

  292. This woman bore a son.

  293. And verse 25.

  294. The spirit of the Lord

  295. began to stir him.

  296. And if we were to roll credits

  297. at this point,

  298. I'm sure it would say

  299. Samson,

  300. the saviour,

  301. is here.

  302. We have four massive grounds

  303. for hope

  304. in this passage.

  305. So how,

  306. as readers,

  307. are we left feeling

  308. as we finish chapter 13,

  309. we are feeling wildly optimistic

  310. for Samson.

  311. So back to our question.

  312. Will the talk of Samson's birth,

  313. and you've got to say

  314. it's a big talk,

  315. will the talk of Samson's birth

  316. be matched

  317. by the walk

  318. of Samson's life?

  319. And we move

  320. from four grounds

  321. for hope

  322. to four reasons

  323. to sigh.

  324. Now I wonder

  325. what words

  326. you scribbled down

  327. that summarized

  328. how you felt

  329. at the end of chapter 15.

  330. Do I wrote

  331. deflated?

  332. Gutted?

  333. Disappointed?

  334. Oh, Samson,

  335. you had it all!

  336. You'll notice

  337. as we journey

  338. through chapter 14,

  339. maybe you want to

  340. scan your eyes

  341. over it just now,

  342. chapter 14.

  343. The deliberate repetition

  344. of the word down.

  345. Now it's used

  346. five times

  347. in chapter 14,

  348. five times.

  349. Verse 1,

  350. down.

  351. Verse 5,

  352. down.

  353. Verse 7,

  354. down.

  355. Verse 10,

  356. down.

  357. Verse 19,

  358. down.

  359. The writer's

  360. trying to tell us

  361. something,

  362. that the trajectory

  363. of Samson's life

  364. ain't going up,

  365. it's going down.

  366. Again,

  367. really quickly,

  368. four reasons

  369. to sigh

  370. from this chapter.

  371. The first one,

  372. right?

  373. The first one

  374. is the woman.

  375. verse 1 of chapter 14,

  376. Samson goes down

  377. to Timnah.

  378. And what does he see?

  379. It's going to be

  380. a key word

  381. in Samson's life,

  382. his eyes.

  383. What is he seeing?

  384. He sees

  385. a daughter

  386. of one of the Philistines.

  387. And immediately

  388. at this point,

  389. in our eyes,

  390. there should be

  391. a warning light flashing.

  392. Sometimes you get them

  393. in your car,

  394. don't you,

  395. when you need to

  396. check your oil.

  397. There's a warning sign

  398. in your dashboard.

  399. Well, this is what's

  400. going on here.

  401. The writer's just

  402. dropping in

  403. a little flashing

  404. warning sign.

  405. God has expressly

  406. prohibited that his

  407. people marry

  408. one of their enemies.

  409. And his parents,

  410. Samson's parents,

  411. they know that.

  412. They know that.

  413. Our little girl,

  414. Chloe,

  415. her favorite word

  416. at the minute

  417. is the word need.

  418. Daddy,

  419. I need a drink.

  420. Daddy,

  421. I need to watch

  422. Bing on CBBs.

  423. Daddy,

  424. I need to wear a dress.

  425. And we have to educate her.

  426. You'd think she would

  427. get it by now.

  428. She's not.

  429. Chloe,

  430. that's not how you ask.

  431. It's not how you ask.

  432. What are you saying?

  433. You see it a little

  434. two-year-old mind

  435. just thinking about it.

  436. Daddy,

  437. can I please have a drink?

  438. Yes,

  439. you can have a drink.

  440. But there's none of that

  441. here with Samson.

  442. None of that here

  443. with Samson.

  444. Verse 2,

  445. you can slightly

  446. understand what

  447. his mom and dad

  448. are trying to do.

  449. Samson is not one of

  450. our daughters

  451. you can marry.

  452. He's not one of

  453. our people

  454. you can marry.

  455. Surely there must have been.

  456. But no,

  457. and feel the force

  458. of the passage here,

  459. get her for me dad.

  460. I want her.

  461. I want her.

  462. I've seen her

  463. and I want her.

  464. Now not only

  465. is Samson not honoring

  466. his father and mother

  467. at this point,

  468. but he's acting

  469. like a spoiled brat.

  470. Is he not?

  471. It's a bit like

  472. if you remember

  473. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  474. when we were growing up.

  475. Veruca saw,

  476. Daddy I want,

  477. Daddy I want,

  478. Daddy I need.

  479. This is Samson.

  480. What Samson sees,

  481. Samson wants

  482. and Samson normally gets.

  483. First reason to sigh

  484. for Samson

  485. is the woman.

  486. Second reason to sigh

  487. is the lion.

  488. Verse 5,

  489. it's Samson

  490. and both his parents

  491. are on their way

  492. down to Temna.

  493. This young lion

  494. comes hurtling towards him,

  495. quite literally

  496. leaps out the pages

  497. like a 3D book here

  498. for us readers,

  499. roaring.

  500. And Samson,

  501. as the spirit

  502. rushes on him

  503. with no weapon

  504. in his hands

  505. but his bare hands,

  506. rips this lion in two.

  507. I love how

  508. the writer drops in there

  509. as one would

  510. rip a young goat

  511. as if to say,

  512. you should know

  513. what that's like.

  514. But he rips

  515. this young lion

  516. in two.

  517. Spirit rushes on him

  518. and here for the first time

  519. in the narrative

  520. we're given a taste,

  521. a taste of what

  522. Samson can accomplish

  523. when the spirit

  524. of God

  525. rushes on him

  526. and empowers him

  527. for service.

  528. Samson continues

  529. to,

  530. verse 7,

  531. continues on

  532. with Manoah.

  533. He talks with this woman

  534. that he sees

  535. quite literally

  536. flirting

  537. with danger

  538. and we get that little

  539. phrase from the writer

  540. which I think

  541. summarizes

  542. Samson's life

  543. in a nutshell.

  544. That he did

  545. what was right

  546. in the Lord's eyes?

  547. No.

  548. He did what was right

  549. in his eyes.

  550. And it's no great

  551. surprise then

  552. that as we read

  553. of Samson

  554. seeing the same

  555. dead lion

  556. on his return

  557. journey home

  558. that as he sees

  559. the honey

  560. that Samson

  561. does what he does.

  562. Now remember

  563. his Nazarite vow.

  564. What wasn't he to touch?

  565. No unclean thing.

  566. No dead bodies.

  567. And here's Samson

  568. proving that he's

  569. more interested

  570. in a little honey

  571. to sweeten his tongue

  572. than he is

  573. to obeying

  574. God's word.

  575. Scraping it

  576. onto his hands.

  577. You see how the writer

  578. lets us know

  579. that he touched this.

  580. Scraping it onto his hands.

  581. Eating it as he went.

  582. Without a care in the world.

  583. Remember when we were

  584. growing up

  585. me and my brother

  586. one of the highlights

  587. of our holiday

  588. was going to the sweet shop.

  589. We'd get those

  590. little flora tubs

  591. and he would fill it up

  592. with 20p mix

  593. Haribos.

  594. And we would just

  595. walk on back to the house

  596. without a care in the world

  597. eating as we went.

  598. Without a care in the world.

  599. This is Samson

  600. eating as he goes.

  601. Not a care

  602. in the world.

  603. Not a second thought

  604. as to what he's done here.

  605. Second reason to sigh

  606. is the animal.

  607. Third reason to sigh

  608. is the party.

  609. You see the party?

  610. Verse 10.

  611. Samson throws a feast

  612. to celebrate his marriage.

  613. Now the Hebrew word there

  614. suggests a party

  615. but one with the highest

  616. probability

  617. that alcohol

  618. is involved

  619. in this celebration.

  620. Again you see

  621. Samson totally blasé

  622. about his Nazarite vow

  623. happy to blend in

  624. with the Philistines

  625. round about him.

  626. And he gives his

  627. Philistine companions

  628. who come to be with him

  629. at his party

  630. gives him this little riddle.

  631. And this riddle

  632. may seem innocent enough

  633. but do you see

  634. that it puts his wife

  635. in danger?

  636. Now she's probably

  637. thinking about

  638. I'm on my honeymoon

  639. I've just got married

  640. I'm thinking about

  641. a cruiser in the med

  642. but instead

  643. she's put in this

  644. horrible position

  645. because of Samson's

  646. pride and arrogance.

  647. Verse 15.

  648. The Philistines say to her

  649. tell us the answer

  650. to that guy's riddle

  651. tell us the answer

  652. to his riddle

  653. or else

  654. we will kill you

  655. and we will burn

  656. your father's house

  657. with fire.

  658. They pressure her

  659. she pressures him

  660. and we see arguably

  661. Samson's weakness

  662. here exploited

  663. because he tells her

  664. the answer to this riddle.

  665. And she to save

  666. her own skin

  667. tells the Philistines.

  668. It's worth noting

  669. the detail the author

  670. gives us there

  671. at verse 17.

  672. Who does she tell?

  673. She tells her people.

  674. As if to tell us

  675. readers again

  676. where her loyalties lie.

  677. These are her people.

  678. And what does Samson

  679. call his wife?

  680. Do you see that

  681. in verse 18?

  682. You only know

  683. because you ploughed

  684. my heifer.

  685. Now there are some phrases

  686. that will never ever

  687. stop being insulting

  688. and that's one of them.

  689. We see that Samson

  690. is not one

  691. he's not like

  692. Mr. Darcy.

  693. I'm not going home

  694. tonight and using

  695. that one with Alex.

  696. That is not a

  697. complimentary thing

  698. to say about your wife.

  699. Here is Samson here

  700. just totally

  701. in love of himself.

  702. And they win

  703. don't they?

  704. They get the riddle

  705. right.

  706. Right.

  707. They win.

  708. Samson owes these men

  709. these Philistines

  710. 30.

  711. I think we can assume

  712. that they're suits

  713. 30 sets of clothes.

  714. Third reason to sigh

  715. is the party

  716. and that leads us

  717. to the fourth reason

  718. to sigh

  719. and that is Samson's

  720. attitude.

  721. Where are these

  722. Armani suits

  723. going to come from?

  724. Where are these suits

  725. going to come from?

  726. Verse 19.

  727. Well in a rage

  728. he goes

  729. and he gets that spoil.

  730. Where does he go?

  731. He goes and he kills

  732. 30 Philistine men.

  733. And in a rage

  734. he rages back

  735. to his father's house

  736. and after he realizes

  737. his wife has been

  738. given to his best man

  739. he rages against

  740. the Philistines.

  741. Now this guy

  742. has got some serious

  743. anger problems.

  744. Serious anger issues.

  745. And he ties

  746. 300 foxes together

  747. which

  748. is no easy thing

  749. I might add.

  750. He ties them together

  751. with torches

  752. and he sets them loose

  753. and Philistine feels

  754. to cause havoc

  755. and devastation.

  756. It's maybe worth

  757. slowing down

  758. just a little bit here

  759. and asking Samson

  760. what are you doing?

  761. What are you doing?

  762. We get the impression

  763. here to be not

  764. that he's toying

  765. with the Philistines.

  766. He's playing

  767. with God's enemies.

  768. Almost

  769. having a bit of fun.

  770. He's always showing off

  771. look how

  772. great I am.

  773. That God has

  774. greatly equipped him

  775. and God has

  776. highly called him

  777. and what is he doing?

  778. He's playing around

  779. having a laugh

  780. without any regard

  781. for the consequences

  782. because there are

  783. consequences

  784. because he's playing

  785. around

  786. notice at verse 6

  787. it costs

  788. his wife

  789. and her father

  790. their lives.

  791. Just playing around.

  792. Understandably

  793. Samson is a

  794. wanted man

  795. in the Philistine

  796. camp.

  797. The Philistines

  798. come looking

  799. for him

  800. and the men

  801. of Judah

  802. after a bit

  803. of negotiation

  804. with him

  805. they present

  806. him to the

  807. Philistines

  808. but God

  809. as the spirit

  810. rushes on

  811. Samson again

  812. defeats them

  813. quite emphatically

  814. you have to say

  815. verse 15

  816. of chapter 15

  817. a thousand men

  818. with a jawbone

  819. why?

  820. Why was he able

  821. to do it?

  822. Because the spirit

  823. of God

  824. rushed on him.

  825. God

  826. through

  827. Samson

  828. won this

  829. victory

  830. against

  831. his people's

  832. enemies

  833. and Samson

  834. calls out

  835. to God

  836. verse 18

  837. he calls out

  838. to God

  839. verse 18

  840. give me a drink

  841. give me a drink

  842. a little irreverently

  843. perhaps

  844. but nonetheless

  845. here is Samson

  846. praying to the Lord

  847. what does he describe

  848. himself as?

  849. Your servant.

  850. A little interesting

  851. though that he calls

  852. the Philistines

  853. uncircumcised

  854. at verse 18

  855. all of a sudden

  856. now he's concerned

  857. as to who

  858. these people

  859. represent

  860. he wasn't all

  861. that concerned

  862. about it

  863. when he went

  864. to marry

  865. one of their

  866. daughters

  867. here is Samson

  868. the first

  869. the fourth reason

  870. rather to sigh

  871. is his attitude

  872. so how as readers

  873. are we left

  874. feeling as we

  875. finish chapter 15

  876. well if the talk

  877. of Samson's life

  878. left us feeling

  879. greatly optimistic

  880. then the walk

  881. of Samson's life

  882. leaves us feeling

  883. greatly deflated

  884. will the talk

  885. of Samson's birth

  886. be matched

  887. by the walk

  888. of Samson's life

  889. on the whole

  890. we have to say

  891. it wasn't

  892. four grounds

  893. for hope

  894. four reasons

  895. to sigh

  896. and as we work

  897. towards a close

  898. this evening

  899. and as we reflect

  900. on his birth

  901. and his life

  902. let me give you

  903. two truths

  904. to ponder

  905. one truth

  906. to challenge

  907. us

  908. and one truth

  909. to comfort

  910. us from these

  911. verses

  912. firstly

  913. here's the truth

  914. to challenge

  915. us

  916. now here is

  917. Samson

  918. tragically

  919. failing to live

  920. up to the calling

  921. that God

  922. had placed

  923. on his life

  924. but it's

  925. what we need

  926. to understand

  927. that it's not

  928. just Samson

  929. who is failing

  930. to live up

  931. to his call

  932. because standing

  933. behind him

  934. is a whole

  935. nation

  936. who are failing

  937. to live up

  938. to the call

  939. that God

  940. has placed

  941. on their lives

  942. so here are

  943. God's people

  944. in the place

  945. that God

  946. had promised

  947. he was going

  948. to redeem

  949. them

  950. and bring

  951. them to

  952. here are

  953. Israel

  954. here are

  955. God's people

  956. his treasured

  957. possession

  958. here are

  959. God's people

  960. the people

  961. who God

  962. had covenanted

  963. with and said

  964. you will be

  965. my people

  966. you will be

  967. my people

  968. and I will

  969. be your God

  970. what an

  971. enormous

  972. privilege

  973. incredible

  974. honour

  975. that these

  976. people

  977. are God's

  978. people

  979. but instead

  980. of being

  981. a shining

  982. light

  983. to the

  984. nations

  985. round about

  986. them

  987. instead of

  988. being a

  989. megaphone

  990. to the

  991. nations

  992. round about

  993. them

  994. that's

  995. belted

  996. out

  997. how great

  998. is our

  999. God

  1000. sing with

  1001. me

  1002. how great

  1003. is our

  1004. God

  1005. here they

  1006. are living

  1007. in disobedience

  1008. and here

  1009. they are

  1010. revelling

  1011. in rebellion

  1012. and here

  1013. they are

  1014. flat out

  1015. and conforming

  1016. not to

  1017. God's

  1018. image

  1019. but here

  1020. they are

  1021. flat out

  1022. and conforming

  1023. to be more

  1024. like the

  1025. likeness of

  1026. the people

  1027. round about

  1028. them

  1029. and undoing

  1030. not what is

  1031. right in

  1032. God's eyes

  1033. but undoing

  1034. what is

  1035. right in

  1036. their eyes

  1037. here are

  1038. God's people

  1039. failing to

  1040. live up to

  1041. their calling

  1042. and presumably

  1043. that is the

  1044. challenge that

  1045. the first readers

  1046. of this book

  1047. would have felt

  1048. as they read

  1049. this

  1050. and that is

  1051. the challenge

  1052. that comes to

  1053. us this

  1054. evening as

  1055. God's people

  1056. as we look

  1057. at the

  1058. failures of

  1059. a previous

  1060. generation

  1061. we've got to

  1062. examine our

  1063. own hearts

  1064. live up to

  1065. your calling

  1066. are we living

  1067. up to our

  1068. calling

  1069. of course

  1070. where we

  1071. stand

  1072. in history

  1073. we stand

  1074. the other

  1075. side of

  1076. the cross

  1077. God too

  1078. has redeemed

  1079. us in

  1080. Christ

  1081. in Jesus

  1082. Christ

  1083. God has

  1084. saved us

  1085. and as

  1086. Christians

  1087. that we

  1088. are in

  1089. Christ

  1090. and he

  1091. has set

  1092. us apart

  1093. to live

  1094. for him

  1095. in relationship

  1096. with him

  1097. and to

  1098. live for

  1099. his glory

  1100. alone

  1101. is the

  1102. constant

  1103. refrain

  1104. in the

  1105. New

  1106. Testament

  1107. dear

  1108. Christian

  1109. dear

  1110. Christian

  1111. see your

  1112. calling

  1113. see your

  1114. calling

  1115. and seize

  1116. your

  1117. calling

  1118. 1 Peter 2

  1119. let me just

  1120. read one

  1121. verse 1 Peter 2

    1 Peter 2:9

  1122. verse 9

  1123. Peter writing

  1124. to his

  1125. generation

  1126. of God's

  1127. people

  1128. but you

  1129. are a

  1130. chosen

  1131. people

  1132. a royal

  1133. priesthood

  1134. a holy

  1135. nation

  1136. a holy

  1137. nation

  1138. God's

  1139. special

  1140. possession

  1141. that you

  1142. may declare

  1143. the praises

  1144. out of

  1145. darkness

  1146. and into

  1147. his wonderful

  1148. light

  1149. so the

  1150. first challenge

  1151. of these

  1152. verses

  1153. is live up

  1154. to your

  1155. calling

  1156. live up

  1157. to your

  1158. calling

  1159. are we

  1160. living up

  1161. to our

  1162. calling

  1163. as God's

  1164. people

  1165. and secondly

  1166. the comfort

  1167. of these

  1168. verses

  1169. the

  1170. initiative

  1171. all the

  1172. way through

  1173. these

  1174. chapters

  1175. is the

  1176. Lord's

  1177. this God

  1178. who never

  1179. changes

  1180. who is the

  1181. same yesterday

  1182. today and

  1183. forever and

  1184. is full of

  1185. steadfast love

  1186. towards his

  1187. people is

  1188. why we

  1189. opened with

  1190. the song

  1191. that we

  1192. opened with

  1193. the Lord

  1194. the Lord

  1195. the Lord

  1196. the Lord

  1197. the Spirit

  1198. of the Lord

  1199. all the way

  1200. through this

  1201. chapter

  1202. the great

  1203. and gracious

  1204. and loving

  1205. initiator

  1206. in these

  1207. chapters

  1208. is the

  1209. same who

  1210. is the

  1211. gracious

  1212. loving

  1213. initiator

  1214. in the

  1215. whole of

  1216. history

  1217. is this

  1218. great

  1219. God

  1220. the Lord

  1221. the Lord

  1222. the one

  1223. who raised

  1224. up a

  1225. saviour

  1226. for a

  1227. people who

  1228. were not

  1229. interested

  1230. who were

  1231. not calling

  1232. out to

  1233. him who

  1234. raised up

  1235. a saviour

  1236. for his

  1237. people

  1238. it's another

  1239. wonderful

  1240. gospel truth

  1241. for us to

  1242. grasp

  1243. it's exactly

  1244. what we see

  1245. in the

  1246. Lord Jesus

  1247. Christ

  1248. and we'll

  1249. come back

  1250. to that

  1251. in a

  1252. minute

  1253. that when

  1254. we were

  1255. not looking

  1256. for God

  1257. God came

  1258. looking for

  1259. us and

  1260. saved us

  1261. it's another

  1262. wonderful thought

  1263. to think about

  1264. this evening

  1265. that God

  1266. did not wait

  1267. for us to

  1268. make the

  1269. first move

  1270. because we

  1271. wouldn't have

  1272. made the

  1273. first move

  1274. towards him

  1275. but he

  1276. stepped down

  1277. and acted

  1278. to save

  1279. us

  1280. the Lord

  1281. who heard

  1282. Manoah's

  1283. prayer

  1284. the Lord

  1285. who sent

  1286. his spirit

  1287. upon

  1288. Samson

  1289. time and

  1290. time again

  1291. to accomplish

  1292. his people's

  1293. deliverance

  1294. and look at

  1295. the very last

  1296. verse of

  1297. chapter 15

  1298. lives

  1299. that our God

  1300. is big

  1301. enough

  1302. he is

  1303. sovereign over

  1304. not just

  1305. the things

  1306. of this

  1307. chapter

  1308. he is

  1309. sovereign

  1310. over all

  1311. of life

  1312. all of

  1313. life

  1314. he is

  1315. sovereign

  1316. over our

  1317. problems

  1318. but the

  1319. other truth

  1320. is that

  1321. he is

  1322. near

  1323. he is

  1324. near

  1325. he is

  1326. near to

  1327. us

  1328. in our

  1329. problems

  1330. I think

  1331. it's

  1332. J.I.

  1333. Packer

  1334. who famously

  1335. called God

  1336. the one

  1337. who is

  1338. majestic

  1339. and the

  1340. one who

  1341. is

  1342. personal

  1343. that is

  1344. the God

  1345. that we

  1346. meet

  1347. here

  1348. that is

  1349. our

  1350. God

  1351. as the

  1352. old hymn

  1353. puts it

  1354. grace

  1355. grace

  1356. God's

  1357. grace

  1358. grace

  1359. that will

  1360. pardon

  1361. and cleanse

  1362. within

  1363. grace

  1364. grace

  1365. God's

  1366. grace

  1367. grace

  1368. that is

  1369. greater

  1370. than all

  1371. our sin

  1372. what loving

  1373. grace

  1374. the Lord

  1375. shows his

  1376. people here

  1377. what a

  1378. wonderful

  1379. God we

  1380. have

  1381. and the

  1382. lesson here

  1383. the big

  1384. thrust of

  1385. this passage

  1386. to the

  1387. readers

  1388. is come

  1389. to this

  1390. God

  1391. don't trust

  1392. in people

  1393. don't trust

  1394. in yourselves

  1395. don't trust

  1396. in the

  1397. nations

  1398. round about

  1399. you

  1400. don't

  1401. trust in

  1402. anything

  1403. but this

  1404. God

  1405. this gracious

  1406. God

  1407. come to

  1408. him

  1409. this

  1410. evening

  1411. come

  1412. to

  1413. him

  1414. foregrounds

  1415. for

  1416. optimism

  1417. four

  1418. reasons

  1419. to

  1420. sigh

  1421. two

  1422. truths

  1423. to

  1424. ponder

  1425. but as

  1426. we leave

  1427. this chapter

  1428. this evening

  1429. let me

  1430. leave you

  1431. with one

  1432. longing

  1433. to have

  1434. here's our

  1435. question again

  1436. will the talk

  1437. of Samson's

  1438. birth be

  1439. matched by the

  1440. walk of

  1441. Samson's

  1442. life

  1443. here's the

  1444. one longing

  1445. to have

  1446. what are we

  1447. left longing

  1448. for at the

  1449. end of these

  1450. chapters

  1451. we're left

  1452. longing for

  1453. a saviour

  1454. a saviour

  1455. where the

  1456. talk of

  1457. his birth

  1458. matches up

  1459. to the

  1460. walk of

  1461. his life

  1462. that's the

  1463. saviour that

  1464. God's people

  1465. need

  1466. and that's

  1467. the saviour

  1468. that this

  1469. gracious God

  1470. one day

  1471. provided

  1472. now I don't

  1473. know how you

  1474. felt as you

  1475. read chapter

  1476. 13 but I

  1477. felt very

  1478. Christmassy

  1479. felt like I

  1480. should be

  1481. putting on

  1482. my Christmas

  1483. jumper

  1484. getting the

  1485. crackers on

  1486. anyone else

  1487. feel Christmassy

  1488. chapter 13

  1489. striking

  1490. similarities

  1491. striking

  1492. similarities

  1493. between the

  1494. two births

  1495. an angelic

  1496. appearance to

  1497. the parents

  1498. the announcement

  1499. of a saviour

  1500. Jesus the

  1501. name meaning

  1502. that God

  1503. saves

  1504. that's what

  1505. that boy

  1506. was called

  1507. to do

  1508. striking

  1509. similarities

  1510. but one

  1511. striking

  1512. difference

  1513. Samson's

  1514. mindset

  1515. not your

  1516. will be

  1517. done God

  1518. but my

  1519. will be

  1520. done God

  1521. Jesus

  1522. throughout

  1523. the entirety

  1524. of his

  1525. life

  1526. tempted in

  1527. the wilderness

  1528. by the

  1529. devil

  1530. tempted in

  1531. the garden

  1532. of Gethsemane

  1533. and yet

  1534. what was

  1535. his cry

  1536. not my

  1537. will be

  1538. done Lord

  1539. not my

  1540. will

  1541. but your

  1542. will be

  1543. done

  1544. and so

  1545. obedient was

  1546. he that it

  1547. took him to

  1548. the cross

  1549. where he died

  1550. for our sin

  1551. three days

  1552. later he

  1553. rose again

  1554. and he rules

  1555. and he reigns

  1556. this is the

  1557. saviour that

  1558. God's people

  1559. need

  1560. the model

  1561. Israelite

  1562. the king

  1563. who lives

  1564. forever

  1565. and the

  1566. saviour who

  1567. has won

  1568. lasting

  1569. rest

  1570. for his

  1571. people

  1572. will

  1573. the talk

  1574. of Samson's

  1575. birth

  1576. live up

  1577. to the walk

  1578. of Samson's

  1579. life

  1580. no

  1581. but will

  1582. the talk

  1583. of Jesus'

  1584. birth

  1585. live up

  1586. to the walk

  1587. of Jesus'

  1588. life

  1589. gloriously

  1590. yes

  1591. so we

  1592. sing

  1593. oh come

  1594. all ye

  1595. faithful

  1596. joyful

  1597. and triumphant

  1598. come ye

  1599. oh come

  1600. ye to

  1601. Bethlehem

  1602. come and

  1603. behold him

  1604. born the

  1605. king of

  1606. angels

  1607. oh come

  1608. let us

  1609. adore him

  1610. oh come

  1611. let us

  1612. adore him

  1613. oh come

  1614. let us

  1615. adore him

  1616. Christ

  1617. the Lord

  1618. let's pray

  1619. together

  1620. and so

  1621. father we

  1622. thank you

  1623. so much

  1624. lord for

  1625. this

  1626. evening

  1627. and lord

  1628. we pray

  1629. for the

  1630. truths that

  1631. we have

  1632. seen in

  1633. your word

  1634. this

  1635. evening

  1636. father that

  1637. they would

  1638. resonate in

  1639. our hearts

  1640. way beyond

  1641. when we

  1642. leave this

  1643. building

  1644. this evening

  1645. father may

  1646. we be drawn

  1647. to put our

  1648. trust in

  1649. the god

  1650. who is

  1651. above all

  1652. things

  1653. and know

  1654. the peace

  1655. of the god

  1656. who is right

  1657. beside us

  1658. so father

  1659. thank you

  1660. for your

  1661. words

  1662. father thank

  1663. you for

  1664. your truth

  1665. go with us

  1666. now we ask

  1667. because we

  1668. ask in

  1669. jesus name

  1670. amen
