  1. Well, as has been said already, my name is Alistair. It's great to see you here this morning.

  2. Now, as we were reading that passage, maybe you thought there was quite a bit of weird stuff in there.

  3. There's a bit about narrow door, a bit about city, striving. There's quite a lot of strange language.

  4. So before we look into this passage in detail, let's pray together for God's help.

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you that you have given us your word.

  6. And Lord, we pray that you would help us now as we look at it, that we would be touched,

  7. and you would help us understand the difficulties of it. In Jesus' name we ask. Amen.

  8. Have you ever thought about the distinction between being a fan or a follower?

  9. So when I was growing up, you can say, well, think about me for example.

  10. You can say that I'm a fan of football, but I'm not a follower.

  11. So growing up, my grandpa and my uncle were huge football supporters of the team Glasgow Rangers.

  12. Maybe you've heard of them.

  13. Now, as a child, that really rubbed off on me.

  14. So if you come to me even today after the service, you say, which football team do you support?

  15. I will proudly say Glasgow Rangers.

  16. But if you dig around a little bit, you'll realize that I know absolutely nothing about the team.

  17. Never been to a live game. Don't even watch them on TV.

  18. Don't know anything about the players. Don't know the manager.

  19. I know absolutely nothing about the team. So I'm a fan, but I'm not a follower.

  20. Now, a follower of Glasgow Rangers would be someone who goes to the live games,

  21. who watches them on TV, who knows about the players, knows the manager,

  22. could tell you about the fixtures that are coming in the next season.

  23. They could talk to you for hours on end about their team.

  24. But that's not me. That is a follower, not a fan.

  25. Or when you think about social media, how many of you have liked or followed famous people?

  26. Movies, TV shows, singers, the list goes on and on of people that we like.

  27. But are you a fan or are you a follower?

  28. Now, I'm a follower of a few good guys on social media.

  29. If you're taking notes, these are guys to keep your eyes on.

  30. So Tim Keller, John Piper, Don Carson, Matt Chandler, Kevin DeYoung, all really good guys.

  31. But do I really know them?

  32. Sadly, no, I don't.

  33. I read their blogs. I read their books.

  34. Yes, I listen to their sermons and I like to get involved with the stuff they put out there,

  35. but I don't know them personally.

  36. I'm not on a first name basis with them.

  37. Yes, I'm definitely a fan, but I'm not a follower.

  38. And the question that this passage is asking you this morning is,

  39. are you a fan or are you a follower of Jesus?

  40. Now, there is a distinction there and we'll see that this morning,

  41. but I want you to have that question in the back of your mind as we look at Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  42. Are you a fan of Jesus?

  43. Are you someone who sits and listens to the things of God?

  44. You hear the stories about Jesus.

  45. You might even shake the preacher's hand at the door and say, good job.

  46. But the minute you walk through that door, it has no bearing on your life.

  47. Are you a fan of Jesus?

  48. Or are you a follower of Jesus?

  49. Are you someone who goes to church?

  50. You hear the things of God.

  51. You hear the stories about Jesus and you believe them.

  52. Are you worshipping God with everything you are?

  53. With your heart, your soul, your mind?

  54. Are you striving to live a life of obedience?

  55. Are you a follower of Jesus?

  56. So keep that question in the back of your minds.

  57. Are you a fan or a follower?

  58. And open your Bibles and let's look at Luke 13.

  59. But before we dive into that passage, I want to put it in some context.

  60. So the Gospel of Luke, surprisingly, was written by a man called Luke.

  61. Luke, and he was a doctor, and he wrote this book with a specific purpose in mind.

  62. And that was that Theophilus, the person who commissioned him to write his Gospel,

  63. would have certainty concerning the things that he had been taught.

  64. And we see that in Luke chapter 1, verse 4.

    Luke 1:4

  65. Luke has written his Gospel so that people can have certainty about Jesus,

  66. about his birth, his life, his death, and his resurrection.

  67. And as it says on the tin, the Gospel of Luke is an orderly account.

  68. It's got quite a clear structure.

  69. So in the first nine chapters, we're introduced to the person of Jesus.

  70. And Luke tells us that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

  71. And then from Luke chapter 9, verse 51, the book kind of changes.

    Luke 9:51

  72. And we see Jesus traveling towards Jerusalem.

  73. Jesus sets his face towards Jerusalem.

  74. And from this moment on, in Luke's Gospel, the focus is that Jesus is journeying towards Jerusalem.

  75. He is journeying towards the cross.

  76. The place where he will pay for the sins and wrongdoings of mankind.

  77. Luke chapter 9, verse 51, right through to 13, verse 21, is one section of Luke's orderly account.

    Luke 9:51

  78. And we see that because it's bookended with the phrase that Jesus was,

  79. or something along the lines of that Jesus was going to Jerusalem.

  80. And in this section, which Graham concluded for us two weeks ago,

  81. there has been one big teaching point, one big takeaway thing,

  82. one big question that Luke has been asking.

  83. And that is, what does it mean to follow this king?

  84. If Jesus is the king of God's kingdom, if Jesus is the king of heaven, which Luke says he is,

  85. then what would it look like for us to follow him today?

  86. And that is what Luke has taught us in the previous section.

  87. But then Luke chapter 13, verse 22, marks the beginning of a new section

    Luke 13:22

  88. that runs through to 1710.

  89. And the big teaching point, the big question that Luke wants us to wrestle with

  90. is who will be in this kingdom?

  91. If Jesus is the king of God's kingdom, then who will be in his kingdom?

  92. The kingdom of God refers to what we call heaven.

  93. And the question is, who are these kingdom citizens?

  94. Who are the people that can call the kingdom of God home?

  95. And we see that right in the passage which Joanna helpfully read to us in verse 23,

  96. where it says, someone asked him, that's someone asked Jesus,

  97. Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?

  98. So in our passage this morning, Jesus asked that question.

  99. And Luke, in his orderly account, shows us two things in what Jesus says.

  100. First of all, Luke tells us about the kingdom people.

  101. He tells us this in verses 22 to 30.

  102. He tells us that these people are distinct and that these people are diverse.

  103. And then secondly, Luke tells us in verses 31 to 35, he tells us about the king.

  104. The king who is both tough and tender.

  105. So we're going to look at Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  106. But as we do, remember, keep that question in the back of your mind.

  107. Are you a fan or are you a follower of Jesus?

  108. So let's look first of all at the kingdom people in verses 22 to 30.

  109. Now Jesus has been traveling around Galilee.

  110. It's a place in Israel.

  111. And he's been making his way towards Jerusalem.

  112. And as he goes, he has been teaching the crowds.

  113. And now remember, all the time as Jesus is traveling towards Jerusalem,

  114. you see the cross on the horizon.

  115. And as Jesus sees the cross, there's no excitement.

  116. Now when we go on holiday, for example, you're in the plane and you're sitting there,

  117. you look out the window and you see Spain or you see Australia,

  118. you see whatever your holiday destination is on the horizon, you get excited.

  119. You're thinking, yes, that's where I'm going to be for a week or two.

  120. That's where I'm going to be sitting in the sun, relaxing.

  121. You get excited at the prospect of where you're going.

  122. There is no excitement here.

  123. Jesus is not excited as he travels towards Jerusalem because he knows that that's where the cross is.

  124. He knows what needs to happen and where he must go and what he must do.

  125. So Jesus is traveling around.

  126. He is teaching.

  127. And it would appear that out of the blue, this man asks a question.

  128. Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?

  129. But this question isn't out of the blue.

  130. Up until now, Jesus has been teaching the crowds and he's mentioned judgment, division.

  131. He's mentioned the dangers of living a religious life without having a devotion to God.

  132. And all of these comments seem to have struck a nerve with someone in the crowds.

  133. And so this man asks his question.

  134. Now Jesus, being the amazing storyteller that he is,

  135. if you ever wanted someone to tell goodnight stories to your children,

  136. someone who could come up with a story on the spot, it was Jesus.

  137. And he uses this as an opportunity to teach the whole crowd about the kingdom people.

  138. And he uses objects that are around people or that people would have known to get his point across.

  139. And so instead of answering this question directly, Jesus uses an illustration.

  140. The illustration of a narrow door.

  141. So Jesus says to the crowd that are around him that everyone should strive to enter through this narrow door.

  142. So this is not just a door that you can walk across accidentally.

  143. It's not a door that you can stumble across and walk through.

  144. But the kingdom people are distinct.

  145. Because they've walked through this narrow door.

  146. The word that Jesus uses there, your Bibles will say,

  147. make every effort, or as other translations put it, strive.

  148. The idea is that it is a struggle.

  149. It is an ongoing fight to enter through this door.

  150. The word is usually used in terms of athletes.

  151. And people who are in sports who struggle and contend to win the race.

  152. It's the dedication that a person requires to win the Olympic gold medal.

  153. It's the dedication and passion that a person requires to finish the marathon,

  154. even though there are physical walls and mental walls.

  155. So I've been told.

  156. I mean, doesn't it make sense that Jesus says that many will try to enter through this door

  157. but will not be able to if it's a struggle?

  158. Just because I can struggle my way through a 5K, barely,

  159. doesn't mean that I can run a marathon

  160. or that I can rock up to the Olympics and win a gold medal

  161. just by trying my best.

  162. The idea is a constant struggle,

  163. constantly making an effort to get through this narrow door.

  164. But there's two questions that this raises.

  165. First of all, what is this narrow door?

  166. And second of all, what does it mean to be saved?

  167. So when thought in light of the question asked,

  168. it's quite clear that this narrow door that Jesus is talking about

  169. is referring to entrance into the kingdom of God,

  170. entrance into heaven.

  171. And the only way into this kingdom is through this narrow door.

  172. What about being saved?

  173. What does it mean for someone to be saved?

  174. Well, every Jew, and Jesus is speaking to Jews here,

  175. every Jew would have understood that people are eternal,

  176. that there is a life after death,

  177. and that there are only two options to spend an eternity,

  178. and that is the option to spend eternity with God

  179. or an option to spend eternity without God.

  180. So there are two places.

  181. We often refer to them today as heaven or as hell.

  182. Heaven is the kingdom of God.

  183. That is where God is.

  184. It is an eternity with God.

  185. And then hell is the place without God,

  186. an eternity without God.

  187. Now hell is a difficult reality.

  188. It really is.

  189. But it is something that the Bible teaches.

  190. And we can't fully understand God and his world

  191. unless we grapple with the topic of hell.

  192. And the man asking the question knows that an eternity without God

  193. is not an eternity that he wants.

  194. And he knows it is an eternity that no one should desire,

  195. an eternity without God.

  196. So that's what it means to be saved,

  197. to be in a right relationship with God,

  198. to be forgiven of our sins, of our rebellion,

  199. and to look forward to spending an eternity with God,

  200. in the kingdom of God.

  201. But a person cannot,

  202. a person cannot work their way into the kingdom.

  203. A person cannot do enough good works

  204. which would get them into the kingdom of God.

  205. The idea of striving

  206. is not so that you can earn your salvation,

  207. but it is a striving to live a life of obedience to God

  208. out of a thankful heart

  209. for the salvation that Jesus has made possible.

  210. So you cannot work to get into the kingdom of God.

  211. And the idea is that many will try

  212. to get into the kingdom of God through other ways,

  213. through other doors,

  214. but they will not be able.

  215. Isn't this counter-cultural?

  216. Doesn't this go against everything our culture and our world believes?

  217. You might have heard the saying before

  218. that all religions lead to God.

  219. There are multiple ways,

  220. multiple doors to God,

  221. into the kingdom of God.

  222. If we were to go out into Edinburgh this morning

  223. and ask people who believe in a life after death

  224. how it is you get there,

  225. I'm sure we would hear countless times

  226. that, oh, but no, there are many ways to God.

  227. There's not just one,

  228. there are many ways to God.

  229. But Jesus is teaching us this morning

  230. that there is only one way into salvation.

  231. The only way into the kingdom of God

  232. is through this narrow door,

  233. is through a proper response to him and his teaching.

  234. It is a narrow door which requires a distinct response to Jesus.

  235. But not only is this door narrow,

  236. in verse 25 we have a sobering truth,

  237. and that is that one day this door will be closed.

  238. Jesus is warning people

  239. because one day this door will be closed

  240. and when it is closed it will not be reopened.

  241. Jesus is speaking with urgency

  242. because he doesn't want people to reject his salvation.

  243. But instead he wants people to repent,

  244. to be made right with God.

  245. And Jesus says that once that way of salvation is closed,

  246. it will not be reopened.

  247. Some will stand at the door and they will knock,

  248. but they will not be allowed in.

  249. People will say,

  250. but Jesus you have to let us into your kingdom.

  251. We were there with you.

  252. We listened to your teaching.

  253. We saw you.

  254. We saw all you did.

  255. We heard you.

  256. But they will not be allowed into the kingdom.

  257. And the point that Jesus is making

  258. is that unless they responded to his message of repentance,

  259. they would not be allowed into the kingdom of God.

  260. And the striking thing is that this goes for the people

  261. who walked around with Jesus,

  262. who followed him at a distance.

  263. They would have heard Jesus speaking

  264. and they would say,

  265. Jesus we were your fans for a long time.

  266. But he will say,

  267. be gone from me because you are not my followers.

  268. They didn't respond in their own hearts.

  269. And notice the passive language

  270. that Luke is using in verse 25.

  271. They sat, they listened, they saw.

  272. It washed over them.

  273. But it didn't affect them.

  274. They didn't respond.

  275. And Jesus is warning them,

  276. saying that they should respond.

  277. They should respond now because time is short.

  278. You see, the thing about the kingdom of God,

  279. or heaven as we call it,

  280. the thing about it that is so great

  281. is that God is there.

  282. That is what makes heaven amazing.

  283. And the desire of kingdom people

  284. is to spend an eternity with God.

  285. But for those who have not made every effort

  286. to enter through this narrow door,

  287. they will be cast out

  288. and they will be in a different place,

  289. which is described in verse 28.

  290. A place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  291. Jesus is describing the place that we call hell.

  292. Now as I was preparing this message this morning,

  293. this week,

  294. I was reading a book.

  295. This little book here,

  296. it's called Is Hell For Real?

  297. It's by Eric Raymond.

  298. And he said something in it

  299. that really resonated with me.

  300. And it really got me thinking

  301. about how I speak about hell with people.

  302. This is what he says.

  303. Let me just read that again.

  304. If we approach this subject of hell

  305. with seriousness and tears in our eyes,

  306. then we are following the example of our Lord.

  307. The point he's making is that

  308. Jesus wasn't using hell

  309. to scare people to believe in him.

  310. But he was being honest.

  311. And he was telling the crowd

  312. the result of rejecting him.

  313. And as you read this passage,

  314. you can maybe kind of see

  315. that there are tears in Jesus' eyes.

  316. He's begging the people.

  317. He's urging them.

  318. He wants them to repent.

  319. He wants to save people.

  320. He does not want to see anybody knocking

  321. when the door is closed.

  322. And Jesus is speaking to Jews,

  323. as I mentioned.

  324. That's why Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  325. and all the prophets were mentioned.

  326. See, many of the Jews based their confidence

  327. that they would be saved,

  328. their confidence that they would be

  329. in the kingdom of God,

  330. was based on the Old Testament patriarchs,

  331. the Old Testament forefathers of Judaism,

  332. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  333. They said,

  334. they surely will be in the kingdom of God.

  335. He's my great, great, great, great, great,

  336. great, great grandfather.

  337. But Jesus says that they will be in heaven

  338. and those who have not responded

  339. to Jesus' message will be cast out.

  340. Jesus is making the point that ancestry,

  341. who you're related to,

  342. doesn't matter.

  343. Who you know will not get you

  344. into the kingdom of God.

  345. Knowing somebody will not make you

  346. a kingdom person.

  347. That can only be made possible

  348. through entering through this narrow door.

  349. Through responding to Jesus Christ,

  350. the only way to God.

  351. So even though these people were there,

  352. even though they were listening

  353. and seeing everything he did,

  354. they were fans,

  355. they were not followers.

  356. Now some of you might be thinking

  357. that it's cruel that hell even exists.

  358. Or cruel that God will one day

  359. close this narrow door,

  360. that the window for people to be saved

  361. will be shut.

  362. But I would like to say this morning

  363. that it is an amazing truth

  364. that a door even exists.

  365. See, God doesn't need to save people.

  366. Jesus didn't need to go to the cross.

  367. God's wrath is just,

  368. but in his love,

  369. he sent Jesus Christ,

  370. his son,

  371. to pay for our sins

  372. so that we can be made right with him again.

  373. So I think it is an amazing truth

  374. that a door even exists

  375. in the first place,

  376. don't you?

  377. The second thing to notice

  378. about these people

  379. is that they are diverse.

  380. They will come from all over the world.

  381. You see that in verse 29

  382. where it says,

  383. people will come from

  384. east and west,

  385. north and south,

  386. and will take their places

  387. at the feast in the kingdom of God.

  388. Jesus isn't concerned,

  389. isn't only concerned,

  390. about a small group of people

  391. in Israel in the first century.

  392. Jesus isn't only concerned

  393. about people from one country,

  394. but the kingdom people

  395. will come from all over.

  396. They will come from north,

  397. east,

  398. south,

  399. west.

  400. So yes,

  401. the kingdom people are distinct

  402. in that they have responded

  403. and walked through this narrow door,

  404. but they are diverse

  405. because God's love

  406. is not bound to one people group.

  407. And these people

  408. will gather together

  409. and they will celebrate

  410. the kingdom of God.

  411. There will be a feast,

  412. a banquet,

  413. a banquet of delight

  414. as people gather

  415. to celebrate God's goodness.

  416. These will be the people

  417. who've made every effort

  418. to enter through the narrow door.

  419. These are the people

  420. who've lived a life of humility,

  421. as verse 30 suggests.

  422. This is an upside-down kingdom.

  423. Those who elevate themselves

  424. will be brought low,

  425. but those who humble themselves

  426. will be elevated.

  427. These are the followers of Jesus.

  428. Now Jesus is speaking to the crowd

  429. and he's speaking with urgency.

  430. He's saying time is short.

  431. Strive to enter through the narrow door

  432. whilst it is still open.

  433. So are you a fan

  434. or a follower of Jesus?

  435. If you're Christians here this morning,

  436. Jesus is encouraging you to strive.

  437. Continue to make every effort

  438. to live a life of obedience.

  439. Continue to make every effort

  440. to be found in Jesus.

  441. Not because that will save you.

  442. Not because your works will save you,

  443. but because you have a desire

  444. to live a life that is pleasing to him.

  445. A life of thankfulness

  446. for what he has done for you in Jesus.

  447. So the question this morning is,

  448. are you striving?

  449. And Jesus is encouraging you,

  450. keep striving.

  451. Maybe you're here this morning

  452. and you've been putting Jesus off.

  453. Maybe you've said,

  454. well,

  455. yeah,

  456. church,

  457. Jesus,

  458. that was my parents' deal.

  459. Now that I'm at uni,

  460. I'm going to relax on that a little bit.

  461. It's not really my thing.

  462. Or maybe you've said,

  463. I'm just too busy

  464. right now.

  465. I've got a lot going on in my life.

  466. Yeah,

  467. I'll think about Jesus,

  468. but maybe when I'm retired.

  469. Maybe in the future

  470. when there's more time on my hands.

  471. Maybe you've been sitting on the fence,

  472. thinking that somebody else's faith,

  473. someone else's response to Jesus

  474. will get you into the kingdom of heaven.

  475. Maybe you haven't heard this before,

  476. or maybe you just think it's irrelevant.

  477. Well,

  478. let me urge you,

  479. just as Jesus is urging people

  480. to consider his message of salvation,

  481. there is no other way

  482. into the kingdom of God.

  483. You cannot get in by good works.

  484. You cannot get in by being

  485. the son or daughter of a Christian.

  486. I beg you,

  487. please do not

  488. leave this morning thinking

  489. that this has no bearing on your life.

  490. Do not wait.

  491. Don't put it off

  492. because the kingdom of God,

  493. the door into the kingdom of God

  494. will one day be closed.

  495. Please,

  496. do not be left knocking.

  497. As Charles Spurgeon once said,

  498. if sinners be damned,

  499. at least let them leap

  500. to hell over our dead bodies.

  501. If they perish,

  502. let them perish

  503. with our arms wrapped around their knees,

  504. imploring them to stay.

  505. If hell must be filled,

  506. let it be filled

  507. in the teeth of our exertion.

  508. Let no one go unwarned

  509. and let no one go unprayed for.

  510. Time is short.

  511. Are you a fan?

  512. Or are you a follower of Jesus?

  513. There is no middle ground.

  514. It is black or white.

  515. Are you a fan?

  516. Or are you a follower of Jesus?

  517. Jesus?

  518. The next portion of our passage this morning

  519. tells us two amazing

  520. and two essential truths

  521. about the king

  522. in verses 31 to 35.

  523. The king Jesus.

  524. Now what do you think

  525. people usually think of

  526. when they hear the name Jesus?

  527. Now I've heard friends of mine

  528. over the years say that,

  529. yeah,

  530. Jesus was a good guy,

  531. did a lot of good stuff,

  532. he was a good communicator,

  533. a good moral teacher.

  534. When you go to museums

  535. or you see art

  536. depicting the person of Jesus,

  537. you usually see

  538. someone who's quite calm,

  539. quite sweet,

  540. would never really hurt a fly.

  541. Now whilst all of that is true,

  542. to some extent,

  543. the king that we meet

  544. in verses 31 to 35

  545. is tough

  546. and he is tender.

  547. Now he is tough.

  548. We wouldn't usually think of Jesus

  549. as being tough

  550. or strong

  551. but as Jesus was traveling

  552. around Galilee

  553. making his way towards Jerusalem,

  554. some Pharisees

  555. came to him,

  556. Pharisees were the religious leaders

  557. of the day

  558. and they said,

  559. quick,

  560. you've got to get out of here.

  561. Herod wants to come

  562. and kill you.

  563. We've met Herod before

  564. in the Gospel of Luke,

  565. haven't we?

  566. In chapter 3,

  567. Herod arrests John the Baptist

  568. who he would later kill.

  569. In Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  570. it states that Herod

  571. was perplexed

  572. by what he heard

  573. Jesus was teaching

  574. and what he was doing.

  575. But now Herod

  576. has one thing on his mind

  577. and that is that

  578. he wants Jesus dead.

  579. He wants Jesus gone.

  580. But Jesus does not cower

  581. in the face of death.

  582. Jesus is tough.

  583. Jesus is determined

  584. to finish the task

  585. that he has been given.

  586. He is determined

  587. to continue his journey

  588. to Jerusalem.

  589. As Jesus has been

  590. continuing

  591. and going to Jerusalem,

  592. he's been casting out demons,

  593. healing the sick,

  594. he's been teaching

  595. his disciples and crowds

  596. and Jesus is saying

  597. that none of that

  598. is going to change

  599. just because one man

  600. wants him dead.

  601. In fact,

  602. Jesus knows

  603. that the very path

  604. that he is walking on

  605. is leading to the cross.

  606. It's leading to the place

  607. where he would give up

  608. his life for the people

  609. of this world

  610. so that they can be saved

  611. and be in the kingdom of God.

  612. So we see that Jesus

  613. is tough

  614. as he sets his face

  615. to Jerusalem

  616. and to the cross.

  617. He's determined

  618. to get there.

  619. But then we also see

  620. the tenderness

  621. of Jesus

  622. and specifically

  623. the tenderness of Jesus

  624. towards those

  625. who have rejected him.

  626. Look at verse 34

  627. with me.

  628. Jerusalem,

  629. Jerusalem,

  630. you who kill the prophets

  631. and stone those sent to you,

  632. how often have I longed

  633. to gather your children together

  634. as a hen

  635. gathers her chicks

  636. under her wings

  637. and you were not willing.

  638. Can you hear

  639. the tenderness

  640. of Jesus?

  641. Can you sense

  642. the deep love

  643. and compassion

  644. that he has

  645. for the people

  646. of Israel?

  647. And this is amazing

  648. because in the not

  649. so distant future,

  650. these are the people

  651. who nail him to the cross

  652. and he knew that

  653. yet he showed love.

  654. Jesus is lamenting

  655. over Jerusalem

  656. which is used

  657. to represent

  658. the whole nation

  659. of Israel

  660. and Jesus laments

  661. over Israel's track record

  662. of killing the prophets.

  663. The Old Testament

  664. is full of stories

  665. of people

  666. who were sent

  667. by God

  668. to Jerusalem,

  669. to Israel,

  670. to warn them

  671. of judgment,

  672. to warn them

  673. of their wandering

  674. from God,

  675. their rejection

  676. of God's law.

  677. But they killed them.

  678. They didn't listen

  679. to them.

  680. They didn't repent.

  681. They killed them.

  682. And even now

  683. as Jesus stands there

  684. and speaks to Jerusalem

  685. in a not so short while

  686. he will be nailed

  687. to a cross

  688. and killed

  689. though innocent.

  690. And so Jesus says

  691. that their house

  692. is forsaken.

  693. The very nation

  694. where God

  695. was meant to dwell,

  696. the very nation

  697. to whom God said

  698. I will be your God

  699. and you will be my people,

  700. they have rejected him

  701. and therefore

  702. they have been rejected.

  703. They have been left empty.

  704. Now this is devastating news.

  705. Because of their rejection

  706. of God,

  707. because of their rejection

  708. of Jesus,

  709. they too will be rejected.

  710. And the content

  711. and timing

  712. of Jesus' message

  713. calls for a response.

  714. Jerusalem.

  715. Will you listen

  716. to God once more?

  717. Will you let me

  718. gather you

  719. as a hen does its chicks?

  720. Will you listen

  721. and repent

  722. because the kingdom

  723. of God is at hand?

  724. Or will you reject

  725. God again?

  726. If you reject God,

  727. Jesus says

  728. you are forsaken.

  729. And you will not

  730. see him again

  731. until the day

  732. where he comes back

  733. into the city

  734. on the back

  735. of a donkey.

  736. But Jesus

  737. is not screaming

  738. this message

  739. at the people

  740. in anger.

  741. That's what I want us

  742. to notice.

  743. But Jesus

  744. is hurt.

  745. He is pleading

  746. with them.

  747. These are the people

  748. who should have

  749. been awaiting

  750. Jesus' arrival.

  751. These are the people

  752. who should have

  753. welcomed him

  754. with open arms.

  755. But instead

  756. they will meet him

  757. with a cross.

  758. And Jesus is warning

  759. them that they are

  760. in danger.

  761. He is warning them

  762. that they need to

  763. turn from their ways

  764. and repent.

  765. They need to

  766. return to God.

  767. They need to repent

  768. and enter through

  769. this narrow door.

  770. So do you see

  771. why it is amazing news

  772. that Jesus is both

  773. tough and tender?

  774. Without the toughness

  775. of Jesus,

  776. the penalty

  777. for our wrongdoings

  778. wouldn't have been

  779. paid for.

  780. And we would have

  781. to pay for the

  782. punishment of our

  783. sins by ourselves.

  784. So we need the

  785. toughness of Jesus.

  786. But in his amazing

  787. grace and his

  788. amazing love,

  789. he became nothing

  790. for you and me

  791. so that we can be

  792. saved and be

  793. reconciled to God.

  794. And without the

  795. tenderness of Jesus,

  796. we wouldn't fully

  797. understand the love

  798. and compassion that

  799. God has for his

  800. people.

  801. And this is directed

  802. at a nation who

  803. were the chosen

  804. people of God.

  805. And it's directed

  806. specifically at people

  807. within that nation who

  808. thought that they

  809. would be saved if they

  810. obeyed the laws,

  811. if they obeyed rules.

  812. They thought if they

  813. did that, then they

  814. would surely be in the

  815. kingdom of God.

  816. Isn't this a trap that

  817. we fall into today?

  818. That our world falls

  819. into so many times?

  820. Okay, yeah, if I go to

  821. church, if I live a good

  822. life, if I don't kill

  823. anyone, if I don't

  824. cheat, if I don't steal,

  825. if I don't lie, yeah,

  826. God will let me in, I'm

  827. a good guy.

  828. The idea that we can

  829. earn our own salvation,

  830. that we can earn our way

  831. into heaven is completely

  832. wrong.

  833. And that is what Jesus

  834. is saying.

  835. Don't be deceived.

  836. The only way into

  837. heaven, the only way to

  838. be saved is through

  839. entrance through this

  840. narrow door.

  841. The only way into

  842. God's kingdom is to

  843. respond to his message

  844. of repentance.

  845. So the question that

  846. Jesus is asking and the

  847. question that he is

  848. asking you this morning

  849. is, are you willing?

  850. Are you willing for God

  851. to gather you to himself,

  852. to nurture you, to care

  853. for you, to protect you?

  854. Are you willing to

  855. accept this king?

  856. Are you willing to be a

  857. follower and not just a

  858. fan of Jesus?

  859. And so in answering the

  860. question, will only a few

  861. be saved, Jesus explains

  862. who the kingdom people

  863. are.

  864. Jesus explains that they

  865. are the ones who strive,

  866. who go all out to get

  867. into the kingdom, to go

  868. through this narrow door.

  869. They are distinct because

  870. they live a life of

  871. obedience, but they are

  872. diverse because they are

  873. from north, east, south,

  874. and west.

  875. They are from everywhere.

  876. And God will gather them

  877. to himself and they will

  878. celebrate in an eternity

  879. the goodness and

  880. greatness of our God.

  881. And so the question is

  882. this morning, are you

  883. striving to enter through

  884. this narrow door?

  885. Are you striving?

  886. And Luke gives us an

  887. insight into the king of

  888. this kingdom.

  889. Jesus, the one who is

  890. both tough and tender.

  891. The one who resolutely

  892. went to the cross, denying

  893. himself absolutely

  894. everything so that we can

  895. gain the thing of utmost

  896. importance, forgiveness

  897. and reconciliation with God.

  898. And the question to ask

  899. yourself this morning is,

  900. are you willing to accept

  901. this king?

  902. Are you willing?

  903. This passage has a great

  904. truth of God's kingdom,

  905. but it also has a sobering

  906. truth of life without God.

  907. And it is not something

  908. that should be skipped over

  909. lightly.

  910. And so again, I want to ask

  911. you this question just as we

  912. close.

  913. Are you a fan?

  914. Or are you a follower of

  915. Jesus?

  916. Let's pray together.

  917. Lord, we ask that this would be

  918. our cry this morning.

  919. Let us be your followers,

  920. not just your fans.

  921. Let us be able to sing with

  922. confidence that it is well with

  923. our souls, not by any doing of

  924. our own, but because you have

  925. given us salvation.

  926. Lord, give us the strength to

  927. strive.

  928. Give us the willingness to call you

  929. king.

  930. We ask this in the strong and

  931. loving name of your son,

  932. Jesus Christ.

  933. Amen.
