  1. Let's just take the words of that song into a short prayer together now.

  2. Lord, we do ask that you would speak deeply and powerfully and in transformational ways

  3. right into our hearts and lives this morning as we are here in your presence, as we open

  4. your word.

  5. May it be your voice that we hear and may you help us to respond.

  6. Amen.

  7. I can't say how relevant Alice's interview was to what we're actually going to be looking

  8. at today as we continue in Luke chapter 14 where Jesus is round the table of the Pharisees.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  9. Alice, I have to say there's just one tiny thing you said that I don't quite agree with.

  10. You agreed, I agree with everything else apart from this one comment.

  11. Did you notice it?

  12. Alice started talking about the great foods and said that's not very spiritual, right?

  13. Well, I'm going to try to persuade you today that food is a thoroughly spiritual thing because

  14. for some reason what we're going to see is that Jesus in the gospel of Luke talks about

  15. food all the time and is constantly at dinner tables.

  16. And, you know, there's three times in the Bible where we hear the phrase, the son of man came,

  17. right?

  18. Once it's he came to seek and save those who were lost.

  19. Once his own words were, the son of man came eating and drinking.

  20. This is incredible that Jesus has got so much to say about food.

  21. And before we read Luke 14, just a little bit of context about food.

  22. I like food and I've been enjoying this week delving in a little bit more into why the Bible

  23. has got so much to say about food and meals.

  24. And I'm sure a lot of the verses will be familiar to you.

  25. Sometimes references to food and meals are a reference to some of what God has to offer

  26. us now.

  27. And sometimes they are pictures of what God has in store for us in future.

  28. And sometimes, and I think the passage in Luke 14 today is a little bit of a mix of the two.

  29. Ben, my son, and I are trying to read through the book of Revelation at present.

  30. It's a bit of a challenge.

  31. I have to say, once we got by the bit about the letters to the churches,

  32. and we got into the funny horses that are like humans,

  33. and the dragons and the beasts and all the rest of it,

  34. it gets a bit confusing.

  35. But the one thing in Revelation that is marvellous and is understandable

  36. are the references to food and meals, right?

  37. So Revelation chapter 3 and verse 20,

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  38. Jesus speaking to the church at Laodicea says,

  39. I'm standing and knocking, and I want to come in.

  40. And what do I want to do?

  41. I want to come in and have a meal with you.

  42. Jesus says, I want to come into your lives and into your churches,

  43. and I want to eat with you.

  44. And then towards the end of Revelation,

  45. as we have a picture of what heaven will be like,

  46. what's it going to be like?

  47. Again, we're told it's going to be like an incredible feast.

  48. We're told it's going to be like a wedding,

  49. and it's going to be like the marriage supper of the Lamb.

  50. So food and feasting comes into the book of Revelation.

  51. But as for Luke, it's just right through,

  52. and we certainly won't go into all of the passages.

  53. But again, just two references from the Gospels,

  54. one where food is about the here and now,

  55. and one where it's more about the future.

  56. In two weeks' time, I hope you're looking forward to it.

  57. In two weeks' time, we get on to that passage, Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  58. The prodigal son, what happens?

  59. What happens when the boy finally returns to his father,

  60. when the father greets him,

  61. and the father says, well, you know, I'm going to punish you now?

  62. No.

  63. The father says, now we are going to have the most incredible feast together.

  64. And so again, food used to demonstrate what it's like to be in fellowship with God the father,

  65. used as a picture of the greatness of being close to God now.

  66. And then in terms of food as a picture for what's to come,

  67. Matthew chapter 22 says this,

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  68. the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who gives a wedding feast for his son.

  69. So food's right through it.

  70. And maybe you want to do a bit of a study of that.

  71. And as we go through this today,

  72. maybe we'll understand a little bit more about the significance

  73. and the importance of food in our lives,

  74. and maybe also food as part of our witness and part of our mission together.

  75. But let's get stuck into this particular story together.

  76. And what we'll do is we'll just break in, if it's okay, at verse 12,

  77. even though our main passage for today is 15 through to verse 24.

  78. So if you've got a Bible, either on paper or on an app,

  79. then do please look to Luke chapter 14 and verse 12, and let's read it together.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  80. Remember the context.

  81. Jesus is having what it must be said is a pretty miserable meal at the Pharisee's house.

  82. Pretty miserable because they've been judging him,

  83. and they're watching absolutely everything he's doing and saying,

  84. and they're waiting to trip him up.

  85. Okay?

  86. Not the sort of meal that Jesus is really into.

  87. Certainly not the sort of meal that he has to offer.

  88. But nonetheless, that's where he's at.

  89. And he says this to his host in verse 12.

  90. When you give a lunch or dinner, do not invite your friends,

  91. your brothers or sisters, your relatives or your rich neighbours.

  92. If you do, they may invite you back, and so you'll be repaid.

  93. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

  94. and you will be blessed.

  95. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

  96. When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus,

  97. Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.

  98. Jesus replied,

  99. A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.

  100. At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to those who had been invited.

  101. Come, for everything is now ready.

  102. But they all alike began to make excuses.

  103. The first said,

  104. I have just bought a field.

  105. I must go and see it.

  106. Please excuse me.

  107. Another said,

  108. I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out.

  109. Please excuse me.

  110. Still another said,

  111. I have just got married, so I cannot come.

  112. The servant came back and reported this to his master.

  113. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servants,

  114. Get out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.

  115. Sir, the servant said,

  116. What you ordered has been done, but there is still room.

  117. Then the master told his servant,

  118. Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in so that my house will be full.

  119. I tell you, not one of those who are invited will get a taste of my banquet.

  120. The film and story Babette's Feast tells us about an 18th century Christian community in Denmark that had lost its way.

  121. It had become incredibly dull, joyless, and legalistic.

  122. Babette was a refugee from Paris who came to this town to live with two sons.

  123. And for 12 years, she served as the housekeeper of those two sisters,

  124. learning how to prepare their humble and very bland food.

  125. Then, unexpectedly, out of the blue, after this 12 years,

  126. she suddenly was told that she had won the sum of 10,000 francs.

  127. Because unbeknown to her, a friend had renewed her lottery ticket in the Paris lottery every year.

  128. Babette asked at that point if she could prepare a banquet for this somewhat miserable community.

  129. And what she did after days of preparation was serve up course after course of the most exquisite food.

  130. A visiting general exclaimed after a number of courses that he had only ever tasted food like that

  131. at the famous Café Anglais in Paris.

  132. As the meal unfolded and as they were served by Babette,

  133. slowly but surely, the community rediscovers joy.

  134. Feuds are ended.

  135. Sin is confessed.

  136. And the evening ends with the community hand in hand around the old village fountain singing the songs of faith.

  137. Meanwhile, the two sisters find Babette in the chaos of the kitchen,

  138. surrounded by dishes and the remnants of the meal.

  139. And with a distant look in Babette's eyes, she says to them,

  140. I was once a cook at the Café Anglais.

  141. And they say, well, Babette, we will remember you when you go back to Paris.

  142. But as the story unfolds, we realise Babette will never be returning to Paris.

  143. She has spent absolutely everything that she had on this feast.

  144. The lavish meal has brought transformation to that joyless community,

  145. but cost her absolutely everything she had.

  146. I think that story of Babette's feast may have some parallels for us

  147. as we get into this story of the feast in Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  148. Jesus tells us a story about the most extravagant feast that you might be able to imagine.

  149. And as we get into it, there are just three key phrases in Luke 14

  150. that I'd like us to really zone in on,

  151. because I think these three key phrases might have something really important

  152. to say to each of us and to speak into our hearts and lives this morning.

  153. And the first is the invitation that was given.

  154. And the phrase that you'll see in verse 17 is this.

  155. So in this parable, it's described by Jesus as a great banquet

  156. to which many, many guests are invited.

  157. This is no half-hearted or meagre affair.

  158. And you may notice if you look closely, it seems that two invitations were given.

  159. Do you see that?

  160. So verse 16, a man invited many guests.

  161. Lots of people have invited.

  162. And what would happen in this custom is following this initial invitation,

  163. the person giving the banquet would have an idea as to how many were going to come.

  164. Right?

  165. So based on that, he would then know how many animals had to be slaughtered,

  166. how many people were going to have to help him serve.

  167. And for a number of days, all of the extensive preparation would be done

  168. for this magnificent banquet based on those initial acceptances.

  169. And then at verse 17, the banquet is ready.

  170. And the second invitation goes out at that point.

  171. All those who have been invited are then told by the servant,

  172. come, for everything is now ready.

  173. The meats have been cooked.

  174. They're ready to be carved.

  175. And now we'd like you to come to the feast.

  176. Come, for everything is now ready.

  177. Jesus wants us to see this story, I think, on so many different levels.

  178. And one of the levels that I would want to really emphasize this morning

  179. is this invitation that I believe we are given by Jesus,

  180. each of us personally today,

  181. to the feast that he has in store for us,

  182. to the celebration that he wants to offer to us today

  183. as he invites us into life with him,

  184. as he invites us despite our past,

  185. despite our inadequacies and inabilities,

  186. despite the fact that we may well,

  187. and it's good if we can,

  188. identify with the poor,

  189. the helpless, the blind, and the lame

  190. who he's already spoken about.

  191. And if we can hear him say to us,

  192. come,

  193. for everything

  194. is now ready.

  195. Jesus

  196. is the one

  197. who has done all the preparation

  198. that is needed

  199. and who is able to invite us

  200. into his magnificent feast.

  201. He is the one who can say

  202. everything is now ready.

  203. He is the one who will invite.

  204. He is the one who has done all the preparation.

  205. What has he done?

  206. Well, as we speak about so much

  207. in this church,

  208. and rightly so,

  209. he is the one

  210. who has given of his life.

  211. He is the one

  212. who has suffered,

  213. who has died,

  214. who has paid the price for our sin,

  215. who has risen again,

  216. and now because of him,

  217. and because of his grace,

  218. and his generosity,

  219. and his extravagant love,

  220. can say to us,

  221. come,

  222. for everything is now ready.

  223. And wouldn't you think,

  224. given the nature of the feast

  225. that Jesus is referring to,

  226. that once this invitation goes out,

  227. people would be running to it,

  228. delighted,

  229. that everything is now ready.

  230. But we hear that they didn't.

  231. And indeed,

  232. it seems that three,

  233. they were only given three of the reasons

  234. why people didn't come,

  235. and there were many excuses

  236. and reasons given

  237. as to why they didn't come.

  238. I wonder if some of you

  239. have found yourself puzzled

  240. by some truly awful excuses

  241. that you've heard

  242. for why people are perhaps rejecting

  243. one of your invitations.

  244. And that can be hard,

  245. it can be hurtful,

  246. can't it,

  247. if you feel that the reason

  248. you're being given

  249. really lacks credibility

  250. as to why somebody

  251. doesn't want to spend time with you.

  252. I was supposed to meet Christian

  253. this week for a coffee,

  254. and I gave him what I think

  255. he thought was a dreadful excuse.

  256. It was a text message saying,

  257. I'm really sorry, Christian,

  258. I've just had a call

  259. from my long-lost cousin

  260. from Australia.

  261. I've never met him before,

  262. but he happens to be in town,

  263. and he's asked to see me tomorrow.

  264. Sorry, we can't meet.

  265. Didn't sound very credible,

  266. but I do have evidence

  267. that there really was

  268. a call from my long-lost cousin

  269. from Australia.

  270. I can absolutely promise you.

  271. I wonder if some of us

  272. have come up with

  273. all sorts of excuses, though.

  274. Excuses as to why

  275. we might be avoiding

  276. doing the things

  277. that God would want us

  278. to be doing.

  279. Maybe some of us have found

  280. the most remarkable excuses

  281. to avoid attending

  282. any events

  283. in our week of prayer

  284. this week.

  285. But certainly,

  286. let's just drill in

  287. for a minute or two

  288. to some of these

  289. dreadful excuses

  290. that Jesus gives

  291. in this parable.

  292. This first person,

  293. sorry, I need to go

  294. and see a field

  295. that I've bought.

  296. I don't think the field

  297. was going to change

  298. very much

  299. in the course of the banquet,

  300. was it?

  301. And I think he probably

  302. knew that field

  303. and what it was like

  304. before he'd accepted

  305. that first invitation.

  306. But he was so caught up

  307. with this field

  308. that he decided

  309. he was going to

  310. stare at a field

  311. and miss the banquet.

  312. And then the second one,

  313. I'm sorry,

  314. I've just gone

  315. and bought some ox.

  316. Ox?

  317. Oxen?

  318. I'm not sure which it is.

  319. And I need to go

  320. and oxen,

  321. thank you.

  322. And I need to go

  323. and try them out.

  324. Was that a matter of urgency?

  325. And the third one,

  326. I've got married

  327. and I need to spend

  328. some time with my wife.

  329. Now when I spoke to my kids

  330. about these three reasons,

  331. they thought that last one

  332. was quite a good one.

  333. They've clearly heard

  334. me feeling that

  335. I have to decline things

  336. on the basis that

  337. no, no, no,

  338. it's really time

  339. that I spend a little bit

  340. of time with my wife.

  341. So maybe the third one

  342. is a slightly better

  343. reason than others.

  344. But you know,

  345. Jesus wants us to see

  346. that all three

  347. of these excuses

  348. were simply

  349. missing the point.

  350. They were giving excuses

  351. and they were rejecting

  352. the invitation to come

  353. and they were missing out

  354. on so much.

  355. They were focused

  356. on what was there

  357. right in front of their eyes

  358. rather than what this,

  359. rather than what was

  360. really offered to them.

  361. And thinking about that,

  362. I was reminded of

  363. one of the things

  364. that C.S. Lewis

  365. had to say

  366. that I think

  367. is very relevant.

  368. He said this,

  369. it would seem

  370. that our Lord

  371. finds our desires

  372. not too strong

  373. but too weak.

  374. We are half-hearted creatures

  375. fooling about

  376. with drink

  377. and sex

  378. and ambition

  379. when infinite joy

  380. is offered to us.

  381. We are like

  382. an ignorant child

  383. who wants to go on

  384. making mud pies

  385. in a slum

  386. because he cannot

  387. imagine

  388. what is meant

  389. by the offer

  390. of a holiday

  391. at the sea.

  392. The trouble is

  393. we are far

  394. too easily

  395. pleased.

  396. Is that some of us?

  397. Are we making

  398. mud pies

  399. in a slum

  400. because we cannot

  401. imagine

  402. what is meant

  403. by the offer

  404. of a holiday

  405. at the sea?

  406. Are we caught up

  407. with what are frankly

  408. in the scheme of things

  409. trivial,

  410. somewhat pathetic

  411. excuses

  412. rather than giving

  413. our wholehearted

  414. devotion

  415. to the one

  416. who says

  417. come

  418. for everything

  419. is now ready.

  420. These people

  421. whom Jesus

  422. has to speak about

  423. stand in sharp

  424. contrast

  425. to the disciples

  426. who we have read

  427. about earlier

  428. in this gospel

  429. for example

  430. Levi or Matthew

  431. in Luke chapter 5

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  432. there is his tax booth

  433. working away

  434. and Jesus

  435. comes and says

  436. Levi

  437. come

  438. everything is now ready

  439. come

  440. follow me

  441. and Levi

  442. gets up

  443. leaves

  444. everything

  445. follows him

  446. and then interestingly

  447. immediately what does he do?

  448. Goes on to throw

  449. a huge big banquet

  450. for the tax collectors

  451. and sinners

  452. but I'm keen

  453. that today

  454. we just pause

  455. and we reflect

  456. on this little phrase

  457. come

  458. for everything

  459. is now

  460. ready.

  461. The invitation

  462. has gone out

  463. Jesus wants us

  464. to join him

  465. for a feast.

  466. Don't get me wrong

  467. I'm not suggesting

  468. for a minute

  469. it'll all be

  470. one big long party.

  471. there will be

  472. fellowship

  473. and celebration

  474. there will also be

  475. suffering

  476. and pain

  477. as we will see

  478. as we go on

  479. to read the rest

  480. of Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  481. There will be

  482. great things

  483. for us now

  484. and there will be

  485. the promise

  486. of ultimately

  487. participating

  488. in that most

  489. magnificent

  490. of all feasts

  491. that we've already

  492. mentioned

  493. in Revelation.

  494. we would have

  495. no greater joy

  496. in this church

  497. today

  498. than to hear

  499. that this day

  500. some of you

  501. have taken

  502. the decision

  503. to turn your eyes

  504. away from the mud pies

  505. in the slum

  506. and to accept

  507. the offer

  508. of the holiday

  509. at the sea.

  510. And the challenge

  511. here is that

  512. the king does

  513. eventually tire

  514. of the excuses

  515. that the servant

  516. is coming back

  517. and telling him

  518. about.

  519. The king does

  520. eventually decide

  521. that he's had

  522. enough of those

  523. excuses

  524. and what's he

  525. going to do

  526. is not slam

  527. the door

  528. and just get on

  529. with the feast

  530. himself.

  531. Absolutely not.

  532. What he's going

  533. to do is just

  534. ensure that the

  535. invitation goes

  536. out all the

  537. more widely

  538. to more and

  539. more and more

  540. and more people

  541. so that more

  542. people have got

  543. an opportunity

  544. to attend.

  545. And the second

  546. little phrase

  547. which I'd invite

  548. us to focus

  549. on and to

  550. speak into our

  551. hearts and

  552. minds and

  553. lives today

  554. is this phrase

  555. that we see

  556. in verse 22

  557. as the servant

  558. has gone and

  559. told some people

  560. about it and

  561. as they've responded

  562. and as he speaks

  563. again to his

  564. master and he

  565. says to his

  566. master I've got

  567. some in but

  568. there is still

  569. room.

  570. There is still

  571. room.

  572. There is room

  573. enough today

  574. for those of

  575. you who feel

  576. that maybe

  577. you've had so

  578. many invitations

  579. maybe you've

  580. thrown up so

  581. many excuses

  582. or maybe

  583. you've almost

  584. taken steps

  585. and you've

  586. joined that

  587. feast and

  588. then you've

  589. retreated and

  590. you've got

  591. back to those

  592. mud pies if I

  593. can continue to

  594. use that

  595. analogy.

  596. I want you to

  597. hear this

  598. word from

  599. verse 22 of

  600. Luke chapter

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  601. 14 and I

  602. pray that it

  603. might be

  604. relevant to

  605. your heart

  606. and life

  607. today which

  608. is that there

  609. is still room.

  610. You are here

  611. and there is

  612. still a moment

  613. of opportunity

  614. for you to

  615. say yes to

  616. Jesus, to

  617. trust him, to

  618. rely on him

  619. for all that he

  620. has done and

  621. to experience

  622. the banquet

  623. that he has

  624. to offer.

  625. But I wonder

  626. if those of us

  627. who are already

  628. enjoying something

  629. of this feast

  630. can also take

  631. these words,

  632. these four

  633. words, as a

  634. powerful challenge

  635. to the mission

  636. that Jesus has

  637. for all of his

  638. followers today.

  639. Because Jesus

  640. wants us

  641. to be the ones

  642. who will go

  643. out and will

  644. spread the

  645. message of the

  646. availability of

  647. this feast to

  648. those far and

  649. wide, those near

  650. and those far.

  651. He has not yet

  652. returned, the

  653. invitation stays

  654. open and the

  655. message that we

  656. have to those

  657. around us is

  658. come, everything

  659. is ready and

  660. there is still

  661. room for you.

  662. I wonder how

  663. we're getting on

  664. going to the

  665. streets, the

  666. alleys, the

  667. roads, the

  668. hedges, the

  669. country lanes.

  670. Are we getting

  671. next door to us?

  672. Are we getting

  673. into our workplace,

  674. to our schools

  675. and our colleges

  676. and getting across

  677. this message?

  678. There is still

  679. room.

  680. I wonder if

  681. as we pass

  682. people who to

  683. the best of our

  684. knowledge may

  685. not know

  686. Jesus, may

  687. not maybe even

  688. realize that this

  689. invitation to this

  690. feast exists,

  691. I wonder if

  692. you could look

  693. at them and

  694. in your mind

  695. you could think

  696. there is still

  697. room.

  698. There is still

  699. room.

  700. Maybe God

  701. wants me,

  702. wants you,

  703. wants us to

  704. do something by

  705. way of encouraging

  706. them to accept

  707. the invitation.

  708. This chapter

  709. is of Luke 14

  710. is spoken about

  711. in this book

  712. that I've got to

  713. recommend for you

  714. today.

  715. I don't know if

  716. some of you have

  717. read it, called

  718. A Meal with

  719. Jesus by a guy

  720. called Tim Chester.

  721. If you haven't

  722. read it, I

  723. thoroughly recommend

  724. it.

  725. You'll get it on

  726. Amazon.

  727. food.

  728. And he speaks

  729. about many of the

  730. examples of food

  731. in the ministry

  732. of Jesus, but he

  733. also speaks about

  734. the many ways in

  735. which his church

  736. family have used

  737. food to try to

  738. reach out to

  739. people of all

  740. cultures and

  741. backgrounds and

  742. generations.

  743. Food as a way in

  744. which they can just

  745. try to share life

  746. and show love

  747. and generosity.

  748. And he says

  749. this,

  750. If you

  751. routinely share

  752. meals and you

  753. have a passion

  754. for Jesus, then

  755. you'll be doing

  756. mission.

  757. Meals will create

  758. natural opportunities

  759. to share the

  760. message of Jesus

  761. in a context that

  762. resonates powerfully

  763. with what you're

  764. saying.

  765. Meals bring

  766. mission into

  767. the ordinary.

  768. Most people live

  769. in the ordinary

  770. and will be reached

  771. by ordinary people.

  772. Alice sees what I

  773. mean now about

  774. meals and food

  775. being thoroughly

  776. spiritual.

  777. Francis Schaeffer

  778. says this,

  779. Start personally

  780. in your home.

  781. I dare you,

  782. I dare you in

  783. the name of

  784. Jesus, do what I

  785. am going to

  786. suggest.

  787. Begin by opening

  788. your home for

  789. community.

  790. There is no

  791. place in God's

  792. world where there

  793. are no people who

  794. will come and

  795. share a home

  796. as long as it

  797. is a real

  798. home.

  799. Tim Chester

  800. goes on to

  801. say this, my

  802. final quote from

  803. him, we

  804. Christians should

  805. have a reputation

  806. for throwing

  807. the best parties.

  808. He then lists

  809. a lot of

  810. helpful reasons

  811. as to why we

  812. might want to

  813. find an excuse

  814. for a party

  815. and says this,

  816. Parties of

  817. course are not

  818. enough.

  819. They create a

  820. great platform

  821. for gospel

  822. opportunities,

  823. but must be

  824. accompanied by

  825. a passion for

  826. people and a

  827. passion for

  828. Jesus.

  829. You don't have

  830. to give a

  831. little sermon,

  832. just be attentive

  833. to people and

  834. be open about

  835. your faith.

  836. Now I realise

  837. that not

  838. everybody feels

  839. that they can

  840. invite people

  841. into their

  842. homes, but

  843. many of us

  844. can.

  845. And I wonder

  846. if some of

  847. us have

  848. bought into

  849. the notion

  850. that our

  851. homes are

  852. our little

  853. castles,

  854. they're for

  855. us and

  856. their family

  857. and they're

  858. basically for

  859. nobody else.

  860. In which case

  861. can I suggest

  862. that that's a

  863. thoroughly

  864. unbiblical,

  865. unchristian

  866. concept and

  867. it's not one

  868. that Jesus

  869. would encourage

  870. or that we'll

  871. find support

  872. for in

  873. scripture.

  874. Rather the

  875. intention is

  876. that we use

  877. all that we

  878. have, including

  879. our homes, as

  880. part of our

  881. pursuit of

  882. Jesus and as

  883. part of our

  884. desire to be

  885. involved in

  886. mission for

  887. his name.

  888. And so as we

  889. seek to say to

  890. others there is

  891. still room, we

  892. ourselves model

  893. generosity and

  894. grace and

  895. kindness in our

  896. lives and in

  897. what we do and

  898. that includes

  899. inviting people to

  900. share a meal

  901. with us in

  902. our homes or

  903. maybe outside

  904. of our homes,

  905. in that party

  906. that you might

  907. have in our

  908. mind.

  909. What would

  910. happen folks

  911. today if all

  912. of us went

  913. away and

  914. thought I'm

  915. going to

  916. throw a

  917. party?

  918. Can you

  919. imagine the

  920. impact that we

  921. could have

  922. collectively for

  923. Jesus and we

  924. prayerfully think

  925. this party is

  926. going to be some

  927. way of just

  928. demonstrating to

  929. others that

  930. Jesus loves them,

  931. that he is the

  932. one who is

  933. inviting them to

  934. come and know

  935. his feast,

  936. that there is

  937. still room and

  938. I know that I

  939. need to model

  940. some of that

  941. joyful generosity

  942. in order to

  943. reflect more

  944. fully the Lord

  945. whom I serve.

  946. Maybe some of

  947. us find that a

  948. little bit scary,

  949. well maybe join

  950. up with somebody

  951. else, maybe make

  952. a plan, can I

  953. encourage you,

  954. let's take this

  955. seriously, let's

  956. take seriously the

  957. way in which Jesus

  958. did so much around

  959. the dinner table and

  960. let's think whether

  961. we can do something,

  962. of course that should

  963. include fellowship with

  964. one another but it

  965. needs to go beyond

  966. that as we seek to

  967. reach out to others

  968. as well.

  969. There is so much

  970. room and the heart

  971. of Jesus is that

  972. those whom we come

  973. into contact with

  974. might be those who

  975. are next to join

  976. this feast.

  977. My final phrase and

  978. with this I close,

  979. it's there in verse

  980. 23 and it's the

  981. phrase, my house

  982. will be full.

  983. Come for all things

  984. are now ready,

  985. there is still

  986. room but ultimately

  987. the reassurance,

  988. the promise,

  989. maybe the challenge

  990. at the end of this

  991. passage that the

  992. master sets out

  993. is to go to the

  994. roads and country

  995. lanes, compel them

  996. to come in so that

  997. my house will be

  998. full.

  999. I wouldn't want us

  1000. to finish today

  1001. thinking that our

  1002. work for Jesus is

  1003. totally dependent on

  1004. us.

  1005. It's not.

  1006. It's all about

  1007. Jesus.

  1008. It's all about what

  1009. he has done.

  1010. It's all about his

  1011. grace and goodness

  1012. and we can finish

  1013. today with absolute

  1014. confidence that he

  1015. knows what he's

  1016. doing, that this is

  1017. the moment when the

  1018. invitation still goes

  1019. out but that

  1020. ultimately the day

  1021. will come when his

  1022. house will be full.

  1023. The day will come

  1024. and it's described

  1025. throughout Revelation,

  1026. it's there in

  1027. Revelation 7 as a

  1028. great multitude that

  1029. no one could count

  1030. from every nation,

  1031. tribe, people and

  1032. language worshipping

  1033. before the throne

  1034. and before the Lamb

  1035. crying out salvation

  1036. belongs to our God

  1037. who sits on the

  1038. throne and to the

  1039. Lamb.

  1040. The party will be

  1041. amazing.

  1042. It will put Babette's

  1043. feast thoroughly into

  1044. the shade.

1045. Jesus will be at the

  1046. centre of it.

1047. He is the one who

  1048. gave everything so

  1049. that it could happen

  1050. in the first place.

  1051. For us, let's ensure

  1052. that we have responded

  1053. to Jesus' invitation.

1054. Let's seek to invite as

1055. many as we can to be

1056. part of this feast and

1057. let's seek in as many

  1058. ways possible to reflect

1059. the attitude of the host

  1060. Christ in our own

  1061. lives.

  1062. Let's pray together.

  1063. Just as we close,

  1064. let's ask God to

  1065. speak to us and

  1066. think about whether

  1067. one of these phrases

  1068. is of particular

  1069. importance for us.

  1070. Come for everything

  1071. is now ready.

  1072. There is still

  1073. room.

  1074. my house

  1075. will

  1076. be full.

  1077. Lord Jesus,

  1078. thank you for your

  1079. grace.

  1080. Thank you for giving

  1081. your life

  1082. for us.

  1083. Help us

  1084. to follow you.

  1085. Help us

  1086. to be engaged

  1087. in mission

  1088. with you.

  1089. For your glory

  1090. we pray.

  1091. Amen.
