  1. Well, I wonder if you've ever got somebody badly wrong.

  2. My favourite example of this is a famous story from 1962,

  3. told of a man who travelled to London with his guitar and his three friends

  4. to perform one of their first ever music auditions in front of a record producer.

  5. So they perform in front of this record producer.

  6. They finish and then they ask him what he thought about them.

  7. And he replied, sorry mate, we don't like your sound.

  8. Boy bands are on the way out.

  9. As it turns out, the record producer had just turned down Paul McCartney and the Beatles.

  10. Getting somebody badly, badly wrong.

  11. Well, as we turn to Luke chapter 15 this morning,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  12. I encourage you to have that passage open in front of you.

  13. As we turn to Luke chapter 15 this morning,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  14. and to think, no exaggeration to say one of the world's most loved stories,

  15. we need to understand that Jesus is talking to a crowd.

  16. And in this crowd are people who have got God badly wrong.

  17. Luke who's listening to Jesus at verses 1 and 2.

  18. Luke tells us, do you see, that there are two groups in this crowd.

  19. First group, tax collectors and sinners.

  20. As we've seen in the play, you don't get much more hated.

  21. I'm a much more hated group of people in this culture than tax collectors.

  22. Because they are Jews who work for the Romans by collecting taxes for the Romans from their fellow Jews.

  23. I mean, these guys are like the opposite of Robin Hood.

  24. They steal from the poor and they take that money and they give it to the rich.

  25. And so in this culture, they're regarded as total scum.

  26. Probably told that every day, that God wants absolutely nothing to do with you.

  27. Little wonder then that as they hear Jesus talk about God's great banquet.

  28. Remember we saw that in Luke chapter 14?

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  29. God's great banquet where outsiders are welcomed in.

  30. No wonder that they are drawing near to Jesus.

  31. Because they have never seen or heard or met anyone quite like him in their whole life.

  32. Pharisees and the scribes of the other group.

  33. What are they doing in this story?

  34. They're grumbling.

  35. Do you see how Luke tells us that?

  36. Why?

  37. Well, because they are watching Jesus as an action.

  38. And they are aghast at what he's doing.

  39. He associates with them.

  40. He associates with them.

  41. He eats with them.

  42. And it's not like Jesus and the tax collectors and sinners have just accidentally turned up at the same restaurant.

  43. It's not like they've gone to Nando's and they just happen to share a booth.

  44. Jesus is going towards these despicable outsiders.

  45. That is a red rag to a bull to these Pharisees.

  46. Because in their minds, Jesus should be at their parties,

  47. wining and dining with them,

  48. and proposing a toast, raising a glass to their righteousness.

  49. They want him to say about them.

  50. When the God said in the beginning,

  51. when we were thinking about the epitome of man,

  52. we could not have imagined it could have got any better than this to the Pharisees.

  53. That's what they want them to say.

  54. You see these two groups in this story?

  55. Two groups in this crowd?

  56. Both of them asking, why?

  57. Why Jesus?

  58. One group asking,

  59. why would Jesus bother with me?

  60. And the other group asking,

  61. why would Jesus bother with them?

  62. I wonder if that's you here this morning.

  63. If that's the,

  64. right, I've got a thing for symmetry,

  65. okay, I'm just moving this to the middle.

  66. I wonder if that's you this morning.

  67. Are you asking,

  68. why would Jesus bother with me?

  69. Why would Jesus bother with me?

  70. Because if he knew what I'd done,

  71. if he knew what I'm doing,

  72. then he would run a mile from me.

  73. But the thing about being God,

  74. the one who created you,

  75. is that he knows you.

  76. He knows all things about you.

  77. It's kind of how being God works.

  78. He knows all things.

  79. And here are two groups of people in their minds asking why.

  80. Well, to help this crowd understand the why,

  81. verse 3,

  82. do you see Jesus told them this parable?

  83. Featuring firstly verses 3 to 7,

  84. a determined shepherd.

  85. See how many sheep he's got?

  86. 100 sheep.

  87. What happens?

  88. One wanders off.

  89. Now we might look at that and say,

  90. a 1% loss?

  91. I think I take those odds.

  92. 1% loss?

  93. Are you kidding me?

  94. But we have to understand that in this culture,

  95. this is a big deal.

  96. A big deal.

  97. Most likely this flock of 100 sheep

  98. would have been made up of the shepherd sheep,

  99. his wider family sheep,

  100. and maybe even some of their neighbor sheep as well.

  101. And the shepherd has got collective responsibility

  102. to look after this whole flock.

  103. And so when Jesus asked his listeners,

  104. would the shepherd not leave the 99

  105. and would he not go and hunt for the one?

  106. They are not thinking,

  107. no chance.

  108. They are thinking,

  109. of course he would.

  110. Of course he would.

  111. But the question is,

  112. what is this shepherd in this story?

  113. What's he going to do?

  114. You know,

  115. our little girl Chloe,

  116. she was singing,

  117. in the bath the other night,

  118. she was singing Little Bo Peep.

  119. Do you know that song?

  120. Little Bo Peep.

  121. Little Bo Peep

  122. has lost her sheep

  123. and doesn't know where to find them.

  124. And I'm listening to her singing this song

  125. and I'm thinking,

  126. that's interesting

  127. because I've been studying a shepherd this week

  128. who has also lost some sheep.

  129. I wonder how Little Bo Peep plans

  130. on finding her sheep.

  131. And she goes on,

  132. leave them alone

  133. and they will come home

  134. wagging their tails behind them.

  135. And I'm thinking to myself,

  136. I don't want to burst her bubble,

  137. I don't have the heart,

  138. but I'm thinking to myself,

  139. Little Bo Peep,

  140. you've been getting away with this for years.

  141. So I'm going to out her

  142. as a terrible shepherdess this morning

  143. because couched in the middle

  144. of a sweet lullaby

  145. is some quite shocking shepherding.

  146. Her plan on getting her lost sheep to come back

  147. is to leave them alone

  148. and trust that they will find their own way back.

  149. It's terrible shepherding.

  150. That would never happen.

  151. That's why that's terrible shepherding.

  152. And the shepherd that Jesus talks about here,

  153. he knows that all too well.

  154. See how Jesus describes the plan of this shepherd

  155. at verse four.

  156. Look at it there.

  157. What does he do?

  158. He goes after the lost sheep

  159. and he finds the lost sheep

  160. and you see the joy that it brings him

  161. that he's found his lost sheep.

  162. See the effort that he goes to

  163. to find the sheep

  164. and then get it back.

  165. What does he do?

  166. He puts it on his shoulders

  167. and he walks all the way home

  168. with it on his shoulders.

  169. And when he gets home,

  170. he doesn't just collapse in the armchair.

  171. What does he do?

  172. He throws a massive party

  173. to celebrate all his friends and neighbours.

  174. Come and rejoice

  175. because this lost sheep of mine,

  176. I found it.

  177. Now that is what I call a shepherd.

  178. That is what I call a shepherd.

  179. And as we'll see in a little bit's time,

  180. we've got to praise God

  181. that this is the shepherd

  182. that he describes here.

  183. Is that just a nice story?

  184. No, it's a wonderful picture,

  185. says Jesus,

  186. of God's heart for the lost

  187. and the party that kicks off in heaven

  188. every time a lost sinner

  189. repents and calls out to God

  190. and comes home to the Father.

  191. Do you see how you have got

  192. God badly wrong,

  193. says Jesus?

  194. So if to underscore the point,

  195. secondly, verses 8 to 10,

  196. he says,

  197. picture a diligent woman in your minds,

  198. picture a diligent woman.

  199. She's got 10 coins.

  200. And the Greek word for coin there,

  201. drachma,

  202. one drachma is the equivalent

  203. of one day's wage in this culture.

  204. So this woman has lost

  205. one day's wage.

  206. That is a significant amount

  207. of money to her

  208. and it's little surprise

  209. that she wants to get it back.

  210. And look at the lengths

  211. that she goes to again

  212. to find it.

  213. Verse 8,

  214. what does she do?

  215. She lights the lamp,

  216. she sweeps the house,

  217. she searches carefully.

  218. And again,

  219. do you see the joy

  220. that finding that lost coin

  221. brings to her?

  222. She calls all her friends

  223. and her neighbors together,

  224. come and celebrate with me

  225. because I found my lost coin.

  226. Is that a nice story?

  227. No.

  228. It's a wonderful truth,

  229. a wonderful picture,

  230. says Jesus,

  231. of God's heart for the lost

  232. and the party

  233. that kicks off in heaven

  234. every time a lost sinner

  235. puts their hand up

  236. and says,

  237. God, I'm sorry

  238. and comes back home

  239. to God the Father.

  240. Do you see how you've got

  241. God wrong,

  242. says Jesus?

  243. Do you see how he's,

  244. Jesus being the master

  245. storyteller that he is?

  246. Do you see how he's just

  247. building the suspense here?

  248. He's intensifying the drama

  249. and we've moved from a,

  250. what did we start with?

  251. A 1% loss.

  252. Now we've moved to a 10% loss.

  253. Well, at verses 11 to 31,

  254. Jesus continues

  255. and he speaks about

  256. a desperate father.

  257. A desperate father

  258. who's not suffered

  259. a 1% loss,

  260. who's not suffered

  261. a 10% loss,

  262. but who's suffered

  263. a 50% loss.

  264. And a 50% loss,

  265. not of his possessions,

  266. but of something

  267. far, far more precious to him.

  268. He's lost 50% of his sons.

  269. Remember Jesus,

  270. he's still trying to get

  271. these folks in the crowd

  272. to understand the why

  273. of what he's doing.

  274. He tells them a story.

  275. A story that centers

  276. around a family home

  277. and it centers around

  278. a father.

  279. And the big question

  280. we have to ask

  281. as we meet this father

  282. here in Luke chapter 15

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  283. is what is this father like?

  284. What is he like?

  285. And as we meet

  286. the father's two sons,

  287. the question we need

  288. to ask is,

  289. what do they think

  290. their father is like?

  291. Have they got him right?

  292. Or have they got him wrong?

  293. Verse 12,

  294. we're introduced

  295. to the younger of the sons.

  296. You see him,

  297. son number two.

  298. Well, what's he like?

  299. Well, we get to know him

  300. a little bit.

  301. He loves the thought

  302. of the high life.

  303. He wants the clothes.

  304. He wants the parties.

  305. He wants the cars.

  306. But what he lacks

  307. is both the money

  308. to make it happen

  309. and the freedom

  310. to live it out.

  311. So what does he do?

  312. He goes to his father

  313. and he doesn't say,

  314. Father,

  315. would you give me

  316. just a little bit

  317. of pocket money?

  318. Because if I could save up

  319. over a number of months

  320. and a number of years

  321. and just put it away,

  322. then maybe I could afford

  323. to do some of the things

  324. I want to do.

  325. He doesn't say that,

  326. does he?

  327. He goes to his father

  328. and he says effectively,

  329. Dad,

  330. I'd much prefer

  331. if you were dead.

  332. Because when you die,

  333. I can get the stuff

  334. that's going to come to me.

  335. So I would really like it

  336. if somehow we could

  337. speed up that process.

  338. I'd love it

  339. if we could speed up

  340. that process.

  341. In other words,

  342. Dad,

  343. I don't want you.

  344. I don't want you.

  345. I just want your stuff.

  346. I just want your stuff.

  347. Now who does he understand

  348. his father to be?

  349. He understands his father

  350. to be just a means

  351. to an end.

  352. He thinks that true joy

  353. is not to be found,

  354. certainly not to be found

  355. at home with his father.

  356. He thinks that true joy

  357. and true satisfaction

  358. is to be found

  359. in living his life

  360. as far away from home

  361. as he can possibly get.

  362. C.S. Lewis

  363. in his book,

  364. Surprised by Joy,

  365. which is really just

  366. his autobiography,

  367. testimony of how

  368. he became a Christian,

  369. he talks about how

  370. before he became

  371. a Christian,

  372. he viewed the God

  373. at the heart

  374. of the Christian faith

  375. as nothing other

  376. than a giant interferer.

  377. I read that,

  378. I remember reading that book

  379. a few years ago

  380. and thinking,

  381. that's kind of how

  382. I used to think of God.

  383. He was kind of like

  384. the football referee.

  385. I used to hate

  386. football referees

  387. when I was growing up.

  388. Do you know why?

  389. Because I thought,

  390. your job,

  391. and you're getting paid

  392. for this,

  393. your job is just

  394. to spoil my fun,

  395. to tell me I'm doing wrong,

  396. to stop me from

  397. doing certain things,

  398. and to probably stop me

  399. from winning the game.

  400. That's how I viewed God.

  401. He was just a killjoy.

  402. Certainly no joy

  403. to be found

  404. in knowing him.

  405. So C.S. Lewis

  406. is saying,

  407. God is a giant interferer.

  408. And she's son number two,

  409. he's got his father

  410. all wrong.

  411. But his father,

  412. amazingly,

  413. he divides his property.

  414. You see,

  415. for the father,

  416. this is more than simply

  417. writing out a blank check

  418. to his son.

  419. The father here

  420. is literally said

  421. to have divided himself

  422. over this request

  423. from his son.

  424. Do you see

  425. what he's saying?

  426. Jesus is saying

  427. the father is,

  428. he's been ripped apart

  429. by this.

  430. He's heartbroken

  431. by what his younger son

  432. wants to do.

  433. But God,

  434. the father in the story,

  435. gives him up.

  436. And the son takes

  437. his father's money

  438. in verse 13.

  439. Do you see that he goes

  440. in the gap year

  441. of all gap years?

  442. He lives this life

  443. that he once wanted to live,

  444. but eventually

  445. that money rounds out.

  446. Eventually the champagne

  447. stops flowing.

  448. Eventually these new

  449. friends that he made

  450. have disappeared.

  451. And to survive,

  452. what does he do?

  453. Well, he,

  454. a Jewish boy,

  455. he melts himself

  456. a slave,

  457. which is bad enough.

  458. But to a Gentile pig farmer,

  459. that is incredibly shameful.

  460. And to feed the pigs

  461. total humiliation

  462. for son number two,

  463. he has hit rock bottom.

  464. Total rock bottom.

  465. And as he's there

  466. in rock bottom,

  467. he remembers

  468. what life was like

  469. at home.

  470. And he thinks,

  471. I've got to get home.

  472. Got to get home.

  473. And he makes his way home

  474. and you can imagine him,

  475. can't you?

  476. Cap in hand.

  477. He's no doubt

  478. thinking through

  479. what's going to happen

  480. when he gets home.

  481. The fact that he returns

  482. a failure,

  483. he does not return

  484. a success.

  485. He cannot go up

  486. to his father

  487. and say,

  488. Father,

  489. I've got a master's degree

  490. now.

  491. I've got 2.4 children.

  492. I've got a Ferrari.

  493. I'm a success.

  494. Get me on the wall.

  495. He returns to his father

  496. with an empty stomach,

  497. with stinking clothes

  498. and with a bruised ego.

  499. And here's the tension

  500. in the drama

  501. at this point.

  502. See,

  503. when he gets home

  504. and his father learns

  505. that he's blowing it

  506. big time,

  507. I mean,

  508. that inheritance money

  509. that the father gave him,

  510. gone just like that.

  511. What's the father

  512. going to do?

  513. As the reader,

  514. we know what son number 2

  515. deserves.

  516. The people in the crowd

  517. listening to the story,

  518. they know what son number 2

  519. deserves.

  520. Hey,

  521. even son number 2

  522. knows what son number 2

  523. deserves.

  524. The question is,

  525. will the father give him

  526. what he deserves?

  527. And we cannot stress

  528. enough

  529. the sense of shock

  530. that the original

  531. hearers

  532. would have had

  533. at what comes next.

  534. Verse 20,

  535. do you see it?

  536. The camera pans

  537. from looking at son number 2

  538. to now looking

  539. at the father.

  540. And I just want you

  541. to see two words

  542. that Jesus uses

  543. to describe the father

  544. here.

  545. First word at verse 20,

  546. what does the father feel?

  547. Compassion.

  548. The father is

  549. desperate

  550. to see his lost son

  551. come home.

  552. His father is

  553. looking for his lost son.

  554. His father is

  555. longing for his lost son.

  556. And so then

  557. it's little

  558. wonder

  559. that as he sees him

  560. in the distance,

  561. he runs to meet him

  562. and he greets him.

  563. Not with a handshake,

  564. not with a nod

  565. of appreciation,

  566. not with a fist pump.

  567. He's not from the west

  568. coast of Scotland.

  569. But he embraces him

  570. and he kisses him

  571. and he hugs him.

  572. Which you have to say

  573. is horrendously strange

  574. behaviour

  575. for a Jewish man.

  576. I mean,

  577. they didn't run anywhere.

  578. In fact,

  579. it's more than strange

  580. the father here,

  581. and we need to see this,

  582. the father here

  583. is humiliating himself.

  584. His father is

  585. stooping so low.

  586. His father is

  587. taking the spotlight

  588. of shame

  589. off of his son,

  590. taking it instead

  591. upon himself

  592. out of his great love

  593. for his lost child.

  594. What a father.

  595. And what does that lead to?

  596. Second words

  597. for us to see

  598. at verse 23.

  599. What does the father do?

  600. He celebrates.

  601. The father is joyous.

  602. The father is lavish.

  603. Look at the description

  604. at verse 22.

  605. Give him the best robe.

  606. Give him a ring.

  607. Give him sandals.

  608. Kill the fattened calf.

  609. The son who came

  610. to the father

  611. thinking that he was

  612. going to negotiate terms

  613. and start off again low

  614. is blown away

  615. by the grace of the father.

  616. What is the father like?

  617. He is a longing looker,

  618. says Jesus.

  619. He is a loving seeker.

  620. He is one who rejoices

  621. when lost people

  622. who have no way

  623. of finding themselves

  624. are found.

  625. This is what

  626. the father is like.

  627. Just a nice story?

  628. No.

  629. It's a wonderful picture,

  630. says Jesus.

  631. A wonderful picture

  632. of God's heart

  633. for the lost

  634. and the description

  635. of the party

  636. that kicks off in heaven

  637. every time a lost sinner

  638. repents,

  639. puts their hand up

  640. and says,

  641. God, I am lost.

  642. I'm sorry for what I've done

  643. and comes home

  644. to God the father.

  645. Do you see how

  646. you've got God wrong,

  647. says Jesus?

  648. Do you see how

  649. you've got him wrong?

  650. Let me ask you,

  651. are you sitting here

  652. this morning

  653. as we see the father here?

  654. Have you got God wrong?

  655. You're like son number one.

  656. Do you believe

  657. that true joy,

  658. that true satisfaction

  659. in life

  660. is to be found

  661. away from him

  662. rather than with him?

  663. You see,

  664. the question to this crowd

  665. and to us this morning

  666. is how will the younger

  667. brothers in the crowd

  668. respond

  669. as they see themselves

  670. in his character

  671. and

  672. as they see

  673. the character

  674. of the father?

  675. So what about son number one?

  676. What about the older son?

  677. Well,

  678. from the field,

  679. verse 25,

  680. son number one

  681. hears the party

  682. that's going on inside

  683. and he finds out

  684. that the arrogant traveler,

  685. he finds out

  686. that his brother

  687. has somehow

  688. had the audacity

  689. to turn up at home.

  690. But here's the square

  691. that he can't quite circle

  692. in his mind.

  693. If my brother

  694. has returned a failure,

  695. then why are we celebrating?

  696. Why are we celebrating?

  697. What is he described

  698. as being at verse 28?

  699. Do you see it?

  700. He is angry.

  701. He's not just indifferent,

  702. he's raging

  703. at his brother.

  704. You see,

  705. he wants a front row seat

  706. at his brother's

  707. public humiliation party.

  708. He's not interested

  709. in taking a front row seat

  710. at his brother's

  711. welcome home

  712. celebration party.

  713. He is angry.

  714. And so the father

  715. goes to son number two,

  716. the older son,

  717. and he pleads with him,

  718. my son,

  719. you should be in here

  720. celebrating with me.

  721. You should be in here

  722. sharing my joy

  723. with my guests.

  724. Come on in

  725. and celebrate

  726. because your son,

  727. my son,

  728. your brother

  729. is back.

  730. Not a chance,

  731. says the older brother.

  732. Not a chance

  733. I'm going in there.

  734. Who does son number one

  735. understand the father to be?

  736. We'll see how he describes

  737. his relationship to him

  738. at verse 29.

  739. All these years,

  740. I've been what for you?

  741. I've been slaving for you.

  742. Slaving for you.

  743. Who does son number one

  744. understand his father to be?

  745. Someone to be tolerated?

  746. Someone to just obey?

  747. Someone to keep up

  748. appearances with?

  749. Certainly not somebody

  750. to be enjoyed.

  751. Because I perform for you,

  752. father.

  753. Because I obey you,

  754. father.

  755. Because I am better

  756. than others,

  757. father.

  758. Surely that means

  759. that I deserve

  760. to be treated better

  761. than those who don't

  762. perform and don't

  763. obey for you.

  764. You see how son number

  765. two had the father wrong?

  766. Do you see how son

  767. number one has equally

  768. got the father

  769. just as wrong?

  770. What's son number

  771. two's problem?

  772. Son number one's

  773. problem rather.

  774. He's got a hard heart.

  775. He's got a hard heart.

  776. Geographically speaking,

  777. he's right up close

  778. to the father.

  779. He's in the house.

  780. Proximity speaking,

  781. he's right there.

  782. But spiritually speaking,

  783. his heart is a million

  784. miles away from

  785. understanding the truth

  786. about who his father

  787. is.

  788. You know,

  789. I wonder if that's

  790. some of us here this

  791. morning.

  792. Your relationship with

  793. God,

  794. if you had to describe

  795. it,

  796. you would describe it

  797. in slave terms

  798. rather than son terms.

  799. This is the older

  800. brother here.

  801. You know,

  802. we might have been

  803. at church all these

  804. years.

  805. We might have been

  806. living our lives

  807. in and around

  808. Christian family

  809. and Christian friends

  810. and Christian circles

  811. all these years.

  812. But the truth of it

  813. is,

  814. if you scratch beneath

  815. the surface,

  816. if you look deep

  817. down,

  818. you don't really

  819. know who God is.

  820. Certainly some

  821. who are in this

  822. crowd that Jesus

  823. is talking to

  824. this morning,

  825. talking to here

  826. rather,

  827. sorry,

  828. have you got

  829. God wrong?

  830. It's interesting

  831. how as we come

  832. to the end

  833. of this story

  834. that we're not

  835. told how son

  836. number one

  837. responds.

  838. I mean,

  839. does he stay

  840. outside or

  841. does he go in?

  842. That's a deliberate

  843. cliffhanger from

  844. Jesus aimed at

  845. the older brothers

  846. in the crowd

  847. because how will

  848. they respond as

  849. they see themselves

  850. in his character?

  851. And how will

  852. they respond as

  853. they see the

  854. character of the

  855. father?

  856. Now,

  857. if Jesus has

  858. shown them that

  859. they are getting

  860. God wrong,

  861. then surely the

  862. question as we

  863. come to the end

  864. of this parable

  865. is now,

  866. will you get

  867. God right?

  868. How are they

  869. going to do

  870. that?

  871. By understanding

  872. that this

  873. is what Jesus

  874. is all about.

  875. He is the one

  876. who has humiliated

  877. himself by

  878. leaving his

  879. father's house,

  880. by taking on

  881. our flesh to

  882. go in search

  883. of those who

  884. are lost.

  885. He is the one

  886. who is on the

  887. way to the

  888. cross.

  889. Remember where

  890. this comes in

  891. Luke's gospel?

  892. To go to the

  893. cross, the place

  894. where he will

  895. stoop so low

  896. offering his

  897. life on the

  898. cross, taking

  899. the sin of

  900. running rebels

  901. like you and

  902. me on himself

  903. so that we

  904. can be made

  905. right with

  906. God and we

  907. can come into

  908. the father's

  909. house.

  910. Will the

  911. people in

  912. the crowd

  913. get God

  914. right?

  915. How are they

  916. going to do

  917. that?

  918. By getting

  919. Jesus right.

  920. And that's

  921. the challenge

  922. for us this

  923. morning as we

  924. work towards

  925. a close.

  926. Have we

  927. got God

  928. right?

  929. have we

  930. got God

  931. right?

  932. Two thoughts

  933. as we finish.

  934. First thought

  935. to make us

  936. praise.

  937. I was left

  938. marvelling this

  939. week as I've

  940. been studying

  941. this passage

  942. and what a

  943. joy it's

  944. been in just

  945. how much God

  946. has done for

  947. me.

  948. Just how much

  949. God has done

  950. for me.

  951. The lengths

  952. that he has

  953. gone to to

  954. buy me for

  955. himself.

  956. Do you see

  957. yourself in

  958. Luke 15?

  959. I was that

  960. lost sheep.

  961. I was that

  962. lost coin.

  963. I was that

  964. lost son.

  965. I had no

  966. chance of

  967. finding myself.

  968. No chance of

  969. saving myself.

  970. No chance of

  971. rescuing myself.

  972. But praise God

  973. this morning

  974. that he is not

  975. like an

  976. apathetic

  977. shepherd.

  978. Praise God

  979. this morning

  980. that he is

  981. not like an

  982. unconcerned

  983. woman.

  984. And praise God

  985. this morning

  986. that he is

  987. not like a

  988. cold father.

  989. No.

  990. What were we

  991. singing earlier?

  992. What's the

  993. truth?

  994. That Jesus

  995. sought me

  996. when a

  997. stranger.

  998. When I was

  999. wandering far

  1000. from the fold

  1001. of God.

  1002. He, to

  1003. rescue me

  1004. from danger.

  1005. He shed

  1006. for me

  1007. his precious

  1008. blood.

  1009. Does that

  1010. thrill your

  1011. heart this

  1012. morning?

  1013. Because that

  1014. is right at

  1015. the heart of

  1016. the gospel,

  1017. is it not?

  1018. This is what

  1019. our God has

  1020. done for us.

  1021. Does that

  1022. thrill your

  1023. heart?

  1024. That you

  1025. are that

  1026. valuable to

  1027. God?

  1028. That as his

  1029. once lost

  1030. creature, he

  1031. made a way for

  1032. you to be

  1033. found?

  1034. That's the

  1035. heart of the

  1036. gospel.

  1037. First thing to

  1038. make us pray.

  1039. Second thought to

  1040. make us pray.

  1041. do we share

  1042. God's heart

  1043. for lost

  1044. people?

  1045. You see, here

  1046. is Jesus

  1047. showing us

  1048. God's heart.

  1049. And here is

  1050. Jesus in the

  1051. wider context

  1052. of Luke as

  1053. he's calling

  1054. sinners to

  1055. himself.

  1056. Here he is

  1057. filling the

  1058. Father's house

  1059. with guests.

  1060. So remember

  1061. the question

  1062. that the

  1063. crowd were

  1064. asking at

  1065. the beginning?

  1066. Why

  1067. Jesus?

  1068. Well, here

  1069. is Rico

  1070. Tyson in

  1071. his wonderful

  1072. little book

  1073. Honest

  1074. Evangelism.

  1075. Probably the

  1076. best book I've

  1077. read on

  1078. talking to

  1079. your friends

  1080. about Jesus

  1081. if you're

  1082. looking for

  1083. something to

  1084. buy and

  1085. devour, maybe

  1086. over the next

  1087. week.

  1088. He writes

  1089. this, puts

  1090. it so

  1091. beautifully,

  1092. God is the

  1093. great evangelist,

  1094. the great

  1095. seeker and

  1096. finder of

  1097. people, and

  1098. he's called

  1099. his followers

  1100. to the same

  1101. pursuit and

  1102. to the same

  1103. emotion.

  1104. So here's

  1105. what I want

  1106. us to do

  1107. just as we

  1108. close this

  1109. morning.

  1110. I know

  1111. that many

  1112. of us have

  1113. got good,

  1114. good friends

  1115. who we

  1116. would love

  1117. to see, we

  1118. would love

  1119. nothing more

  1120. than to see

  1121. them become

  1122. Christians.

  1123. And I know

  1124. for many of

  1125. us here that

  1126. we have

  1127. parents and

  1128. we have

  1129. children who

  1130. have perhaps

  1131. wandered from

  1132. the faith or

  1133. people who

  1134. we long to

  1135. see in our

  1136. families,

  1137. one day bow

  1138. the knee to

  1139. Jesus and

  1140. worship him.

  1141. And it's

  1142. painful, isn't

  1143. it, sometimes

  1144. that the

  1145. people that

  1146. we love

  1147. sometimes don't

  1148. seem interested.

  1149. But here's

  1150. what I want

  1151. us to do

  1152. just as we

  1153. close.

  1154. I want you

  1155. to picture

  1156. some people

  1157. in your

  1158. mind.

  1159. Just picture

  1160. some people

  1161. in your

  1162. mind.

  1163. And as

  1164. you're thinking

  1165. of them,

  1166. just before you

  1167. go this

  1168. morning, why

  1169. do you ask

  1170. someone else

  1171. this morning

  1172. who they

  1173. had in their

  1174. minds?

  1175. Who has

  1176. God placed

  1177. in their

  1178. hearts and

  1179. minds?

  1180. And why

  1181. don't you

  1182. pray for

  1183. them as

  1184. well this

  1185. week?

  1186. But just

  1187. as we

  1188. close in

  1189. the silence

  1190. now, having

  1191. seen the

  1192. heart of

  1193. God in

  1194. Luke chapter

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  1195. 15, these

  1196. people that are in

  1197. our hearts and

  1198. our minds, why

  1199. don't we just

  1200. bring them before

  1201. our Father?

  1202. Just now as we

  1203. close, and then

  1204. I'll close in

  1205. prayer.

  1206. let's pray

  1207. together.

  1208. So dear

  1209. Father, we

  1210. thank you

  1211. that we've

  1212. seen in Luke

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  1213. chapter 15 this

  1214. morning that you

  1215. are the great

  1216. seeker of

  1217. lost people.

  1218. And so dear

  1219. Lord, we ask

  1220. that by your

  1221. spirit who is

  1222. living in us,

  1223. that you would

  1224. install in us

  1225. now your

  1226. heart for a

  1227. broken and

  1228. lost world.

  1229. So Lord, we

  1230. lift the names

  1231. of those that

  1232. we love to

  1233. you, and we

  1234. ask dear

  1235. Father that you

  1236. would be so

  1237. gracious in

  1238. finding them.

  1239. Dear God, we

  1240. praise you this

  1241. morning, and we

  1242. thank you for

  1243. Jesus, and we

  1244. pray in his

  1245. name.

  1246. Amen.
