  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It's a great privilege for me to be here. Can everybody hear me?

  2. When we talk about mission, we just heard some insight into what overseas or cross-cultural mission looks like.

  3. And oftentimes we think that involves language, that involves culture, that involves study.

  4. You need to have skills as a speaker or skills as a teacher or insight as an apologist.

  5. But I can say to you from a human standpoint, the reason why I'm standing here today is a Christian named Alan invited me to church.

  6. I didn't go to church. I didn't believe in God. I saw no need to do either.

  7. And I encountered this man, Alan, 27 years ago when I moved to Scotland.

  8. We shared a flat just off the High Street in the center of Edinburgh on Coburn Street, that windy street that goes down to Waverly.

  9. And Alan was a Christian. And the first thing Alan did was find a church.

  10. It happened to be Buclue Free Church, where I've been ever since.

  11. And Alan had a personal and a profound and an obvious relationship with Jesus.

  12. Now, I didn't know what the gospel was. I didn't know who Jesus was.

  13. But I did know who Alan was.

  14. And I could tell that there was something in him that was different and positive and engaging.

  15. So sometimes we think of mission and we think of the challenges, and there are.

  16. And we think of the preparation, and there is.

  17. But I would suggest that each one of us here, if we know Jesus, if we love Jesus,

  18. then he has given to us the work of mission, whether local or national or international.

  19. And we live in a day where we might be tempted to despair.

  20. We might be tempted to say there's so much, so much darkness.

  21. There's so much ignorance. There's so many difficulties.

  22. And that's all true.

  23. But if the day is characterized by darkness, doesn't that mean that light would be even more apparent?

  24. If we live in a day that is characterized by confusion, doesn't that imply that clarity becomes ever more obvious?

  25. So never lose sight of what you can do, not there and then, but here and now.

  26. With that brief introduction, I'd like to take you to a very distant place.

  27. If you go as far south as you can and you go as far west as you can in China,

  28. there is a monument with a plaque that's written in three languages.

  29. And it's written in the language of Mandarin Chinese, it's written in the language of the Lisu people,

  30. and it's also written in English.

  31. The English inscription reads this,

  32. Today, the Lisu people live in three countries predominantly.

  33. There's approximately 900,000 Lisu people in China,

  34. 350,000 in Myanmar, Burma,

  35. and about 40,000 in Thailand.

  36. Now, the Lisu population in China is 45% evangelical.

  37. By evangelical, we're evangelical.

  38. We believe the gospel.

  39. We recognize Jesus as Savior and Lord.

  40. We recognize the Bible as the word of God.

  41. We recognize that salvation is the work of God through Christ applied by the Holy Spirit.

  42. So these are believers as we would recognize believers.

  43. So 45% of the Chinese, the Lisu people within China are evangelical.

  44. 52% of the Lisu people in Myanmar are evangelical.

  45. And 34% of the Lisu people in Thailand are evangelical.

  46. Now, I hope today that I'll give you some information.

  47. I'm not expecting anybody to remember statistics.

  48. But remember that this plaque was from the Lisu church in recognition of one man,

  49. giving thanks and praise to God for his work.

  50. So today, if you look at the Joshua Project, and if you've never seen this website,

  51. I'd encourage you to go.

  52. The Joshua Project looks at the world and all of the peoples of the world

  53. and gives you an insight into each of these people.

  54. So you can look up any people group.

  55. You can look up any nation.

  56. And you can see the progress of the gospel in that place and among those people.

  57. So these statistics are as accurate as we can get at the present time.

  58. This is 2017.

  59. In 1908, when James O. Fraser went to...

  60. Well, he left for China in 1908.

  61. He arrived and settled in the far southwest by 1910.

  62. And that was the first time he encountered the Lisu people.

  63. They had traditional dress that was different from the Chinese.

  64. They had language that was different from the Chinese people.

  65. They had customs that were different.

  66. But the one thing that struck James Fraser was this,

  67. that the Lisu people knew absolutely nothing about Jesus Christ.

  68. So we are talking about 109 years ago,

  69. that the Lisu people were unreached,

  70. unpenetrated, unengaged with the gospel of Jesus.

  71. And today, let's say 110 years later,

  72. these are a people who are predominantly evangelical believers.

  73. Now, how does this happen?

  74. How did this happen?

  75. And how can we be a part of what God is doing?

  76. So this church and these people...

  77. Now, James O. Fraser was a missionary

  78. with what was then known as the China Inland Mission.

  79. It's now known as OMF, Overseas Missionary Fellowship.

  80. And this is a missionary organization that is operating

  81. in many of the countries of Eastern Asia,

  82. involved in work among the Asian peoples

  83. and the Chinese people and the Chinese diaspora.

  84. But let me take you back, because I want us to be inspired.

  85. Because as we consider these great figures of the past,

  86. we might be inclined to say,

  87. that's great for him.

  88. That's great for them.

  89. But what can I do?

  90. Or what can we do?

  91. Well, just to take you back a little bit.

  92. So when James Fraser, he was born in 1886.

  93. When he was 20 years old, he graduated.

  94. He had a degree in engineering.

  95. He also happened to be a very accomplished pianist.

  96. And he was going to pursue a career in engineering.

  97. He was a Christian.

  98. And then a friend gave him a leaflet, a pamphlet.

  99. And the title of the pamphlet was,

  100. Do Not Say.

  101. Do Not Say.

  102. And the subtitle was,

  103. The Church's Excuses for Neglecting the Heathen.

  104. Now by heathen means the foreigners,

  105. the people living in distant countries,

  106. but particularly foreigners who do not know the gospel.

  107. And this is a remarkable pamphlet.

  108. It's about 80 pages.

  109. And this pamphlet profoundly transformed the thinking

  110. and profoundly transformed the life of James Fraser

  111. and through his life,

  112. profoundly transformed the Lisu people group.

  113. So maybe we can begin by asking ourselves,

  114. what excuses are we making?

  115. What excuses are we making individually?

  116. What excuses are we making as a church?

  117. That we look at this world today,

  118. roughly 7.4 billion people on this big planet,

  119. and it's growing.

  120. We think of the diversity,

  121. all different kinds of philosophies,

  122. all different kinds of religions,

  123. all different kinds of customs.

  124. We think of those areas of the world

  125. where there are barriers and obstacles,

  126. and there are many.

  127. We think of those areas of the world

  128. where being a Christian is dangerous.

  129. And we're proclaiming Jesus could be very dangerous.

  130. And we can all make excuses individually.

  131. I'm too young.

  132. I'm too old.

  133. I'm not good with languages.

  134. I find it difficult to eat unusual food.

  135. It's too far.

  136. It's too tough.

  137. We don't have enough money.

  138. This is a reason.

  139. In my own church, the free church,

  140. this is a constant refrain.

  141. We don't have the resources.

  142. We don't have the people.

  143. We don't have the funding.

  144. But this pamphlet was reminding us

  145. that one day,

  146. Jesus Christ will return.

  147. And one day,

  148. Jesus will ask us to give an account.

  149. And this pamphlet that Fraser read,

  150. and this pamphlet,

  151. which you can read,

  152. it's there online if you'd like to see it,

  153. it's suggested that the excuses that we make now

  154. will appear to be very hollow then.

  155. They won't be very persuasive

  156. when Jesus gives us the opportunity

  157. to make our excuses

  158. or to give the reasons for which

  159. we have not shared the gospel with our neighbors,

  160. nor have we shared the gospel

  161. with the distant peoples of the world.

  162. So let's keep in mind this man, James Fraser.

  163. Let's keep in mind a people

  164. that had no knowledge of the gospel

  165. about a hundred years ago.

  166. And that a people today

  167. who are characterized

  168. by a vibrant and by a vital Christian church,

  169. not a perfect Christian church.

  170. As much as you have to celebrate

  171. in Brunsfield Evangelical Church,

  172. yours is not a perfect church.

  173. Beclew Free Church on the other side of the meadows,

  174. certainly not a perfect church.

  175. Why?

  176. Because we're composed of people.

  177. So the Lord Jesus is not waiting to work

  178. in the lives of perfect people

  179. or in the fellowships of perfect churches.

  180. If he was, he would have no one to work with

  181. and no congregations to work with.

  182. But do we have a vision

  183. for what God is up to?

  184. Because as you read the Bible,

  185. and just a few moments ago,

  186. Alistair read two chapters.

  187. He read a chapter from the middle of the Bible,

  188. Psalm 67.

  189. He read a chapter from the end of the Bible,

  190. Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  191. If I could read a few verses

  192. from the beginning of the Bible,

  193. if you look, for example,

  194. at Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  195. This is one of the profound encounters

  196. of the Bible.

  197. The Lord said to Abram,

  198. go from your country

  199. and your kindred

  200. and your father's house

  201. to the land that I will show you.

  202. And I will make of you a great nation.

  203. And I will bless you

  204. and make your name great

  205. so that you will be a blessing.

  206. I will bless those that bless you.

  207. And him who dishonors you,

  208. I will curse.

  209. And in you,

  210. all the families of the earth

  211. shall be blessed.

  212. Now, as we read the Bible,

  213. there are threads

  214. that unite the whole of Scripture.

  215. The gospel is one of those threads.

  216. The message of salvation

  217. through faith

  218. is one of these threads

  219. that unites the whole of Scripture.

  220. Because when God spoke to Abraham,

  221. what do we read?

  222. We read that Abraham believed God

  223. and that God credited

  224. his faith as righteousness.

  225. So it's all about trusting in God.

  226. It's not about us,

  227. what we do,

  228. but it's about God

  229. and what he has done.

  230. Now, Abraham saw Jesus

  231. from a distance.

  232. We have a much clearer picture,

  233. don't we,

  234. of who Jesus is

  235. and what Jesus has done.

  236. So the thread of the gospel

  237. runs from Genesis

  238. through to Revelation.

  239. There is no other message

  240. because there is no other Savior.

  241. But I would suggest equally

  242. that the thread of mission

  243. runs through the whole of Scripture.

  244. It becomes clearer

  245. and more focused

  246. as we go from old to new

  247. or as we go from the beginning

  248. of the Old Testament

  249. through to the Psalms,

  250. through to the prophets,

  251. through to Isaiah,

  252. that we see a growing picture

  253. that God has a care and concern

  254. not for some or few,

  255. but for all.

  256. All families,

  257. all tribes,

  258. all nations,

  259. all peoples,

  260. and that God chose

  261. to work in the life

  262. of Abraham,

  263. one,

  264. that Abraham would become

  265. a nation,

  266. a nation based on faith.

  267. So wherever you see Abraham,

  268. think faith.

  269. There is the father

  270. of the faithful.

  271. So God built a great nation

  272. out of one man.

  273. But the desire was

  274. that not only this one nation

  275. would know God,

  276. but that this one nation

  277. would show God off

  278. to the nations

  279. that they would desire

  280. to come

  281. to see God

  282. for themselves.

  283. And that's what God

  284. is doing

  285. in the lives

  286. of his people today.

  287. He not only is concerned

  288. about your salvation,

  289. your eternal destiny,

  290. he's not only concerned

  291. about your welfare,

  292. but God wants

  293. to show himself off

  294. in your life

  295. and through your life

  296. so that the people

  297. you work with,

  298. the people that you

  299. live next door to,

  300. the people within

  301. your household,

  302. the people that you

  303. rub shoulders with

  304. as you go to church,

  305. or the people that

  306. you just have

  307. good friendships with,

  308. that they want to say

  309. there's something about him

  310. and there's something

  311. about her

  312. and there's something

  313. about us.

  314. That's different.

  315. And when God

  316. shows himself off,

  317. what does he show off?

  318. He shows off his power.

  319. He shows off his mercy.

  320. He shows off his grace.

  321. He shows off his goodness.

  322. We sang a version

  323. of Amazing Grace

  324. just a few moments ago.

  325. God demonstrated his power

  326. and his mercy

  327. in the life of John Newton,

  328. a man whose life

  329. was characterized

  330. by infidelity.

  331. He was an unbeliever,

  332. a man whose life

  333. was characterized

  334. by sin and licentiousness.

  335. God met him.

  336. God changed him.

  337. God transformed him.

  338. So when he said,

  339. Amazing grace,

  340. how sweet the sound

  341. that saved a wretch like me.

  342. I once was lost,

  343. but now am found,

  344. was blind.

  345. But now I see

  346. that John Newton

  347. was testifying personally

  348. to the grace

  349. and to the power

  350. of the gospel.

  351. So as we survey

  352. the scriptures,

  353. Abraham will be

  354. the father of a nation

  355. and that nation

  356. through him,

  357. through that nation

  358. and through Abraham

  359. that all the nations

  360. of the earth

  361. will be blessed.

  362. God be merciful

  363. and bless us

  364. that the blessing

  365. that we desire

  366. for ourselves

  367. in Psalm 67

  368. is an overflowing blessing

  369. so that others

  370. might see,

  371. that others might taste,

  372. that others might enjoy,

  373. and others might benefit.

  374. And as we come

  375. to this final picture

  376. in the book of Revelation,

  377. we have that there's

  378. a multitude,

  379. so many that they

  380. cannot be numbered,

  381. that they are clothed,

  382. they're wearing white,

  383. they have been made pure,

  384. they've come out

  385. of the tribulation,

  386. they've washed their robes

  387. and made them white

  388. in the blood of the Lamb.

  389. And how are these described?

  390. A great multitude

  391. that no one could number

  392. from every nation,

  393. from all tribes

  394. and peoples and languages,

  395. standing before the throne,

  396. before the Lamb,

  397. clothed in white branches,

  398. in white robes

  399. with palm branches

  400. in their hand

  401. and crying out

  402. with a loud voice,

  403. salvation belongs

  404. to our God

  405. who sits on the throne

  406. and to the Lamb.

  407. All peoples,

  408. all nations,

  409. all families

  410. will be represented

  411. where?

  412. In glory,

  413. in front of the Lamb.

  414. So the promise

  415. to Abraham

  416. and the fulfillment

  417. of Revelation,

  418. these are the great bookends.

  419. And here we are

  420. right in the middle.

  421. We are in the middle

  422. of God's redemptive plan.

  423. And right now,

  424. we can say

  425. that there is a world

  426. and that there are peoples

  427. in this world

  428. who do not yet know

  429. and have not yet heard.

  430. The Lisu people

  431. now have heard.

  432. They have an indigenous church.

  433. They have a growing church

  434. that is able

  435. to reach its own people

  436. and even reach beyond

  437. its own people group.

  438. Let me remind you

  439. just of those words

  440. of the Great Commission,

  441. Matthew 28.

  442. If you think of Matthew 28,

  443. verses 18 to 23,

  444. three verses

  445. shows how my mind works.

  446. I often think of food.

  447. Think of a sandwich,

  448. right?

  449. A sandwich,

  450. you have a piece of bread,

  451. you have something

  452. in the middle,

  453. you have a piece of bread.

  454. This is a sandwich

  455. because you have two statements

  456. and in the middle

  457. you have a command.

  458. Statement number one,

  459. and Jesus came

  460. and said to them,

  461. all authority in heaven

  462. and on earth

  463. has been given to me.

  464. That's who Jesus is.

  465. The other half

  466. of the sandwich

  467. is the statement

  468. in verse 20,

  469. and behold,

  470. I am with you always

  471. to the end of the age.

  472. So what do we have?

  473. We have the power of Jesus

  474. and we have the presence

  475. of Jesus.

  476. So all power,

  477. all authority,

  478. and his presence

  479. is with us

  480. from now until forever.

  481. Now you understand

  482. those brackets

  483. or the bread

  484. of the sandwich.

  485. You then come

  486. to the command

  487. because if you look

  488. at the command

  489. on its own

  490. you would say,

  491. I can't do it.

  492. We can't do it.

  493. This is impossible.

  494. But if you have

  495. all powerful Jesus

  496. and all present Jesus,

  497. then the command

  498. go therefore

  499. and make disciples

  500. of all the nations,

  501. baptizing them

  502. in the name

  503. of the Father

  504. and of the Son

  505. and of the Holy Spirit,

  506. teaching them

  507. to observe

  508. all that I

  509. have commanded you.

  510. Now that command

  511. comes now

  512. into a much

  513. different focus.

  514. Because if the power

  515. belongs to Jesus,

  516. can he do this?

  517. Absolutely.

  518. If the presence

  519. of Jesus is there,

  520. will he do this?

  521. Absolutely.

  522. All the power,

  523. all the resources,

  524. all that we need,

  525. the wisdom,

  526. the grace,

  527. the strength,

  528. the courage,

  529. the comfort,

  530. we are not doing

  531. this on our own,

  532. but he is with us

  533. every step,

  534. every journey,

  535. every challenge.

  536. So if you think

  537. of the Great Commission

  538. in that way,

  539. you realize

  540. that it's still

  541. all about Jesus.

  542. the work of the cross,

  543. the work of salvation,

  544. is that a joint venture

  545. on our part

  546. that we give

  547. and he gives

  548. that we do

  549. and he does?

  550. No.

  551. It's his work

  552. on our behalf

  553. and all the benefit

  554. comes to us.

  555. Now in the work

  556. of mission,

  557. in a sense,

  558. yes,

  559. we go,

  560. we respond,

  561. we proclaim,

  562. but it's his work

  563. from beginning

  564. to end.

  565. It's his power.

  566. It's his authority.

  567. It's his presence.

  568. It's his agenda.

  569. All the praise

  570. on all the credit

  571. and all the glory

  572. will ultimately

  573. come to him.

  574. Now when you think

  575. to that story

  576. of James Fraser,

  577. let me give you

  578. an insight

  579. into what kind

  580. of person

  581. Fraser was.

  582. Now you might say

  583. he's an educated man

  584. and he was.

  585. He was gifted

  586. in acquiring language

  587. and understanding

  588. a different culture,

  589. which he was.

  590. So much so

  591. that the

  592. Lisu alphabet

  593. that was adopted

  594. by the Chinese government,

  595. you see,

  596. the Lisu people

  597. are one of 55

  598. minority people groups

  599. within the

  600. People's Republic

  601. of China.

  602. The government

  603. of China

  604. recognized

  605. that the Fraser alphabet

  606. was the best

  607. representation

  608. of the Lisu

  609. language

  610. that has ever

  611. been developed.

  612. So here's a man

  613. with gifts,

  614. absolutely.

  615. But listen to his

  616. insight into the

  617. work of mission.

  618. He said,

  619. I used to think

  620. that prayer should

  621. have the first place

  622. and teaching the second.

  623. Now I feel that it

  624. would be truer to

  625. give prayer

  626. the first,

  627. second,

  628. and third place

  629. and teaching

  630. the fourth.

  631. Now this is the

  632. challenge.

  633. We might not all

  634. have the gifts

  635. to teach.

  636. We might not have

  637. all the gifts

  638. to acquire language.

  639. We might not all

  640. have the gifts

  641. to evangelize

  642. or to give an

  643. apologetic,

  644. a reason,

  645. or a response.

  646. But prayer

  647. is something

  648. that we all

  649. can do.

  650. Prayer is something

  651. that we are all

  652. able to do.

  653. And in prayer

  654. we are drawing

  655. upon the resources,

  656. the strength,

  657. the power

  658. of the one

  659. who has all

  660. power,

  661. all strength.

  662. In one of his

  663. prayer letters

  664. he wrote to

  665. his supporters,

  666. Fraser said this,

  667. he said,

  668. I am not asking

  669. you just to

  670. give help

  671. in prayer

  672. as a sort

  673. of sideline,

  674. but I am

  675. trying to roll

  676. the main

  677. responsibility

  678. of prayer

  679. on you.

  680. I want you

  681. to take

  682. the burden

  683. of spiritual

  684. warfare,

  685. the burden

  686. of warfare,

  687. the burden

  688. of these people

  689. on your shoulders.

  690. I want you

  691. to wrestle

  692. with God

  693. for them.

  694. So it's very easy

  695. to look at

  696. someone like

  697. Fraser and to say

  698. what a great

  699. missionary,

  700. what a great

  701. example of.

  702. But I think

  703. he would be

  704. the first to say

  705. and was the

  706. first to say

  707. that it was

  708. not him,

  709. but it was

  710. the prayers

  711. of God's

  712. people,

  713. but even more,

  714. it was the

  715. God to whom

  716. they were

  717. praying.

  718. He was the

  719. one who

  720. achieved.

  721. He was the

  722. one who

  723. accomplished.

  724. He was the

  725. one who

  726. transformed

  727. the spiritual

  728. lives of

  729. these people.

  730. It was not

  731. him,

  732. but it was

  733. God himself.

  734. So there

  735. you have

  736. the great

  737. commission.

  738. There you

  739. have the

  740. reminder of

  741. what God

  742. has done

  743. and is

  744. doing.

  745. You're

  746. celebrating

  747. these years,

  748. 67 to

  749. 2017,

  750. 50 years.

  751. Let me

  752. take you

  753. back to a

  754. key moment

  755. in that

  756. period.

  757. It was in

  758. 1974.

  759. In 1974,

  760. a group of

  761. leaders from

  762. all over the

  763. world gathered

  764. in Lausanne,

  765. Switzerland.

  766. It became

  767. known as the

  768. Committee for

  769. Worldwide

  770. Evangelism,

  771. and they

  772. published a

  773. covenant.

  774. You see,

  775. the recognition

  776. was this.

  777. On one

  778. level,

  779. by 1974,

  780. all the

  781. nations of

  782. the world,

  783. the nation

  784. states,

  785. had been

  786. penetrated to

  787. some extent

  788. by the

  789. gospel.

  790. So there

  791. was a

  792. perception,

  793. among some

  794. at least,

  795. was,

  796. overseas

  797. mission has

  798. now been

  799. fulfilled.

  800. Listen to

  801. these words.

  802. We affirm

  803. that Christ

  804. sends his

  805. redeemed

  806. people into

  807. the world

  808. as the

  809. Father sent

  810. him,

  811. and that

  812. this calls

  813. for a

  814. similar deep

  815. and costly

  816. penetration

  817. of the

  818. world.

  819. We need

  820. to break

  821. out of

  822. our

  823. ecclesiastical

  824. ghettos and

  825. permeate

  826. non-Christian

  827. society.

  828. In the

  829. church's

  830. mission of

  831. sacrificial

  832. service,

  833. evangelism is

  834. primary.

  835. world's

  836. evangelization

  837. requires the

  838. whole church

  839. to take

  840. the whole

  841. gospel to

  842. the whole

  843. world.

  844. I think

  845. we can

  846. celebrate

  847. here,

  848. Brunsfield

  849. Evangelical

  850. Church,

  851. Buclew Free

  852. Church,

  853. Charlotte

  854. Baptist

  855. Chapel,

  856. Corubber's

  857. Christian

  858. Cloth.

  859. We have

  860. many churches

  861. in the

  862. city of

  863. Edinburgh

  864. that have

  865. the whole

  866. gospel.

  867. We'll

  868. differ on

  869. some small

  870. points,

  871. but that

  872. doesn't

  873. matter.

  874. But we

  875. have the

  876. message.

  877. We have

  878. the message

  879. of Jesus.

  880. But are

  881. we aware

  882. of our

  883. responsibility?

  884. The whole

  885. church,

  886. that doesn't

  887. just mean

  888. everyone of

  889. Brunsfield

  890. Evangelical,

  891. but it

  892. means all

  893. the believers

  894. within the

  895. city of

  896. Edinburgh,

  897. within the

  898. nation of

  899. Scotland,

  900. the whole

  901. church needs

  902. to take

  903. this whole

  904. gospel.

  905. We don't

  906. give the

  907. world anything

  908. less than

  909. what we

  910. have,

  911. but we

  912. need to

  913. take it

  914. to the

  915. whole of

  916. this world,

  917. to all

  918. of its

  919. people.

  920. If you

  921. look at

  922. the Bible,

  923. in Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  924. chapter 1,

  925. there were

  926. about 120

  927. people who

  928. met together

  929. for prayer.

  930. By Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  931. chapter 2,

  932. 3,000 had

  933. been added to

  934. the church at

  935. the end of

  936. Peter's

  937. Pentecost

  938. sermon.

  939. Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  940. 4,

  941. we're told

  942. that many

  943. of those

  944. who had

  945. heard the

  946. word believed

  947. and the

  948. number of

  949. men came

  950. to about

  951. 5,000.

  952. By Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  953. chapter 17,

  954. when Jason

  955. had welcomed

  956. some of the

  957. brothers into

  958. his home,

  959. we're told

  960. that these

  961. men who

  962. have turned

  963. the world

  964. upside down

  965. have come

  966. here also.

  967. Jason has

  968. received them

  969. and they are

  970. all acting

  971. against the

  972. decrees of

  973. Caesar.

  974. saying that

  975. there is

  976. another

  977. king,

  978. Jesus.

  979. So there

  980. is a rapid

  981. spread of

  982. the gospel

  983. within the

  984. biblical period.

  985. 120,

  986. 3,000,

  987. 5,000.

  988. The world

  989. turned upside

  990. down.

  991. Now, I'm a

  992. student of

  993. history.

  994. When I came

  995. to this

  996. country, I

  997. came to

  998. study the

  999. history of

  1000. Scotland.

  1001. So it

  1002. wasn't church

  1003. history, but it

  1004. was the history

  1005. of the Scottish

  1006. people, the

  1007. political history

  1008. of Scotland, and

  1009. it was a

  1010. comparative

  1011. study between

  1012. Scotland and

  1013. Ireland.

  1014. If you want

  1015. more information

  1016. that can tell

  1017. you fascinating

  1018. stuff.

  1019. But having

  1020. become a

  1021. Christian, my

  1022. love for

  1023. history is

  1024. still there.

  1025. And when I

  1026. read the

  1027. biographies of

  1028. Fraser, or

  1029. read William

  1030. Carey, or

  1031. read of

  1032. Hudson Taylor,

  1033. or read of

  1034. Charles Spurgeon,

  1035. and I'll be

  1036. referencing some

  1037. of these folks

  1038. later today, I

  1039. love the

  1040. history.

  1041. So let me

  1042. give you an

  1043. idea of

  1044. history, because

  1045. if you think

  1046. of 1900,

  1047. 1900 probably

  1048. was the

  1049. high-water

  1050. mark of

  1051. Western

  1052. missionary

  1053. activity in

  1054. the nations,

  1055. overseas,

  1056. foreign mission

  1057. activities,

  1058. probably at

  1059. its height by

  1060. 1900, certainly

  1061. 1900, 1910.

  1062. In 1900,

  1063. Africa had

  1064. 10 million

  1065. Christians, and

  1066. that was about

  1067. 10% of the

  1068. population.

  1069. By 2000, this

  1070. figure had

  1071. grown to

  1072. 360 million

  1073. Christians,

  1074. representing

  1075. half the

  1076. population.

  1077. Quantitatively,

  1078. this may well

  1079. be the largest

  1080. shift in

  1081. religious

  1082. affiliation that

  1083. has ever

  1084. occurred anywhere.

  1085. I don't know

  1086. about you, but

  1087. I have this

  1088. perception.

  1089. I have lived

  1090. in Scotland

  1091. 27 years.

  1092. You kind of

  1093. see the

  1094. church here, and

  1095. you kind of

  1096. think, well, I

  1097. guess that's the

  1098. way it is

  1099. everywhere.

  1100. It's not the

  1101. way it is

  1102. everywhere.

  1103. In the world

  1104. today, the

  1105. gospel is

  1106. reaching new

  1107. people, and the

  1108. church of Jesus

  1109. is growing, and

  1110. in some cases

  1111. growing rapidly.

  1112. If I could

  1113. recommend one

  1114. book to you,

  1115. you might be

  1116. familiar with

  1117. John Piper.

  1118. John Piper

  1119. wrote, let

  1120. the nations

  1121. be glad, the

  1122. supremacy of

  1123. God in

  1124. missions.

  1125. If you want

  1126. one book that

  1127. will fire you

  1128. up to pray, and

  1129. maybe even to

  1130. go, I would

  1131. say that this is

  1132. the book to

  1133. read.

  1134. Because Piper

  1135. will capture the

  1136. biblical imperative,

  1137. and Piper will

  1138. fire you and

  1139. enthuse you with,

  1140. if you've ever

  1141. seen Piper or

  1142. heard Piper, he's

  1143. got a great

  1144. enthusiasm about

  1145. his preaching, and

  1146. it comes through in

  1147. his writing.

  1148. But think of

  1149. this, 10% of

  1150. Africa, at the

  1151. height of the

  1152. Western missionary

  1153. endeavor, in

  1154. 1900, 10% of

  1155. the population

  1156. was Christian.

  1157. Today, when

  1158. many of the

  1159. Western missionary

  1160. agencies have

  1161. withdrawn or

  1162. reduced, so you

  1163. see, God is

  1164. working, and he's

  1165. working in

  1166. remarkable ways,

  1167. and he's

  1168. developing and

  1169. growing local

  1170. churches,

  1171. remarkably, in

  1172. the continent

  1173. of Africa, and

  1174. to the ends of

  1175. the earth.

  1176. Just to give

  1177. you another

  1178. statistic that

  1179. you might find

  1180. interesting.

  1181. In 1900, 2.5%

  1182. of the world's

  1183. population were

  1184. categorized as

  1185. believers in

  1186. Jesus.

  1187. 2.5%.

  1188. So that meant

  1189. it took 18

  1190. centuries for the

  1191. gospel to reach

  1192. 1 out of 40

  1193. people.

  1194. That figure was

  1195. doubled by the

  1196. year 1970.

  1197. So 5% of the

  1198. world's population

  1199. by 1970.

  1200. That's remarkable.

  1201. 18 centuries,

  1202. 2.5%.

  1203. 70 years, now

  1204. to 5%.

  1205. Today, we're

  1206. probably around

  1207. the 12, 12.5% to

  1208. 15%.

  1209. So you go from

  1210. 1 out of 40 in

  1211. 1900.

  1212. You're now to

  1213. 1 out of 8 in

  1214. 2017.

  1215. There's still

  1216. plenty to go.

  1217. But I was

  1218. shocked by these

  1219. statistics because I

  1220. thought in my

  1221. mind that we

  1222. would have been

  1223. seeing, if not a

  1224. sharp decline, but a

  1225. steady decline in

  1226. the expansion of the

  1227. gospel.

  1228. Why?

  1229. Because we've seen a

  1230. steady decline here

  1231. within the United

  1232. Kingdom or within

  1233. Scotland.

  1234. But no.

  1235. The work of the

  1236. gospel, the advance

  1237. of the gospel, is

  1238. proceeding, and in

  1239. some cases, rapidly.

1240. But let me give you

  1241. an insight.

  1242. You don't need to

  1243. remember the numbers,

  1244. but think of the

  1245. scale here.

  1246. Remember in 1974,

  1247. there was a

  1248. recognition that

  1249. describing world

  1250. mission by nations

  1251. was inadequate.

  1252. In the United

  1253. Nations today, there

  1254. are 193 nations

  1255. in the UN.

  1256. In the most

  1257. recent Olympics, the

  1258. Rio Olympics 2016,

  1259. 206 nations

  1260. competed.

  1261. Missiologists

  1262. suggest that in

  1263. the world there

  1264. are approximately

  1265. 17,000 people

  1266. groups.

  1267. Now, these might be

  1268. distinguished because

  1269. of language, or by

  1270. culture, or by

  1271. both.

  1272. But that's a much

  1273. different picture,

  1274. isn't it?

  1275. 193 nations in the

  1276. UN, 206 nations in

  1277. the Olympics.

  1278. Now, 16, let's say

  1279. 17,000 people

  1280. groups.

  1281. And out of those

  1282. 17,000, 7,000 are

  1283. in the category of

  1284. unreached, like the

  1285. Lisu people in

  1286. 1910.

  1287. They did not know

  1288. the gospel.

  1289. They had no

  1290. meaningful engagement

  1291. with the message of

  1292. Jesus Christ.

  1293. They had no

  1294. scriptures in their

  1295. language.

  1296. They had no

  1297. indigenous church.

  1298. church.

  1299. They had no

  1300. significant effort of

  1301. bringing the gospel to

  1302. them.

  1303. So 7,000 people

  1304. groups today represent

  1305. over 3 billion

  1306. people on this

  1307. planet.

  1308. This afternoon, we're

1309. going to be looking at

  1310. what mission looks like

  1311. locally.

  1312. And if we're honest,

  1313. mission among our own

  1314. people is tough.

  1315. Now, in every church

  1316. there will be some

  1317. people who come to

  1318. church regularly who

  1319. are not Christians.

  1320. But they might come

  1321. because of family, they

  1322. might come because of

  1323. curiosity, or maybe just

  1324. come because of custom.

  1325. But at least they're

  1326. accustomed to church,

  1327. right?

  1328. Now, these people know

  1329. what church is like.

  1330. They have a familiarity

1331. at least with what the

  1332. message of the church

  1333. is.

  1334. So as a preacher,

  1335. they're part of the

  1336. audience.

1337. You don't need to do

1338. much work to get them.

  1339. They're there in front

  1340. of you.

1341. So you can preach the

  1342. gospel, you can encourage

  1343. them or exhort them

  1344. because they're there

  1345. in front of you.

1346. The next step, of course,

1347. for you or for me, is

1348. how do we reach the

  1349. Scottish people, the

  1350. people that live in

  1351. Edinburgh, work in

  1352. Edinburgh, are from

  1353. Edinburgh, how do we

  1354. reach them meaningfully

  1355. for the gospel?

  1356. And that's tough.

  1357. Because these are

1358. people that don't go to

  1359. church.

  1360. They probably don't read

  1361. the Bible.

1362. They may or may not

  1363. have any knowledge or

  1364. background about

  1365. Christianity.

  1366. Christianity.

  1367. But when we talk

  1368. about these 7,000

  1369. people groups, these

  1370. are very different

  1371. types of people.

  1372. They have very

  1373. different languages.

  1374. They have very

  1375. different cultures.

  1376. They have a, the

  1377. distance culturally

  1378. between them and us

  1379. is vast.

  1380. Now you might say

  1381. the difference between

1382. a person who goes to

  1383. church, believes in

  1384. Jesus, Scottish person,

  1385. and the Scottish person

  1386. who doesn't go to

  1387. church, there's a

  1388. gap there, absolutely.

  1389. But that's a relatively

  1390. small gap.

  1391. You speak the same

  1392. language, you're from

  1393. the same culture, you

  1394. understand the nuances,

  1395. you understand roughly

  1396. what people think, what

  1397. people feel, etc.

1398. But if you're trying now

  1399. to reach a nomadic

  1400. group in Saharan

  1401. Africa, they have a

  1402. very different language

1403. than we do, they have

  1404. very different cultures

1405. than we do, they don't

  1406. have settled communities

1407. as we would see them,

  1408. that is a huge

  1409. missiological gap from

1410. where we are to where

  1411. they are.

1412. But if we are committed

  1413. to the command that

  1414. Jesus gives, and you'll

  1415. notice in the Bible,

  1416. Jesus never really does

  1417. give suggestions.

  1418. Jesus never really does

  1419. offer advice.

1420. Jesus tells us what to

  1421. do.

1422. He gives us what we

  1423. need, but he doesn't

1424. give us ten tips for a

  1425. happy life.

  1426. He doesn't give us

  1427. five insights to a

  1428. healthy church.

1429. He says, I want you to

  1430. make disciples of all

  1431. the nations.

  1432. Remember that pamphlet,

  1433. the church's excuses

  1434. for neglecting the

  1435. heathens.

  1436. These 7,000 people,

  1437. groups, who do not

  1438. have the gospel, they

  1439. are geographically

  1440. remote, they are

  1441. culturally very

  1442. different, many of

  1443. them are hostile to

  1444. what they perceive to

  1445. be the gospel.

  1446. They're not Christians

  1447. and they don't

  1448. particularly want to be

  1449. Christians.

  1450. There may be

  1451. restrictions that mean

1452. that you and I cannot

  1453. easily go to those

  1454. places.

  1455. Now, those sound like

  1456. good excuses.

  1457. Jesus, the language is

  1458. really different.

  1459. Jesus, the culture is

  1460. very different.

  1461. Jesus, they don't

  1462. really want to be

  1463. Christians anyway.

  1464. Their countries or

  1465. their leaders are

  1466. hostile.

  1467. hostile.

  1468. That excuse, to

1469. you and to me, I

  1470. think we can convince

  1471. each other.

1472. I think we can give

  1473. each other a fair

  1474. number of reasons why

  1475. reaching these 7,000

  1476. people groups is beyond

  1477. our capacity.

  1478. We're few, there are

  1479. many, we're limited

  1480. financially, the

  1481. cultural and all these

  1482. things.

1483. We could list a number

  1484. of excuses, but the

  1485. pamphlet's title was

  1486. do not say.

  1487. So, 3.1 billion

  1488. people on this

  1489. planet have no

  1490. meaningful connection

  1491. to the gospel.

  1492. Does that bother

  1493. us?

  1494. 3 billion people.

1495. Now, you might say that

  1496. there are lost people

  1497. wherever you go.

  1498. There might be lost

  1499. people in your family,

  1500. people that you love

1501. dearly, that do not yet

  1502. know the Lord Jesus.

  1503. And they, you know,

1504. I once was lost, but

  1505. now I'm found.

  1506. So, the Bible does

1507. give you this kind of

  1508. binary category.

  1509. Amazing grace means

  1510. you're found by

  1511. Jesus.

  1512. But the, apart from

  1513. the amazing grace of

  1514. Jesus, you're lost.

  1515. But these people are

  1516. not just lost.

  1517. They have no

  1518. meaningful way of

  1519. being found.

  1520. Now, does that mean

  1521. that God is, absolutely,

  1522. God is not limited.

1523. God can do what he

  1524. wants, as he wants,

1525. how he wants, when he

  1526. wants.

  1527. God can do anything

  1528. he wants.

  1529. And yet, God chooses

1530. to use you and me.

  1531. I would choose other

  1532. people, to be honest.

  1533. I would choose more

  1534. able people.

  1535. I would choose more

  1536. gifted people.

  1537. I would choose more

  1538. enthusiastic people.

  1539. Jesus tends to

  1540. choose us.

  1541. He chooses ordinary

  1542. people.

  1543. Why?

  1544. Because when

  1545. extraordinary things are

  1546. accomplished by

  1547. ordinary people, the

  1548. credit must go

  1549. somewhere else.

  1550. When extraordinary

  1551. things are accomplished

  1552. by extraordinary

  1553. people, then, well,

  1554. they must have the

  1555. credit.

  1556. He's great at this,

  1557. she's good at that.

  1558. No.

  1559. When we realize that

  1560. we're not good at

  1561. these things, and

  1562. we're not naturally

  1563. able to these things,

  1564. and when we realize

  1565. that it must be

  1566. Jesus, and Jesus

  1567. alone who does it,

  1568. then the credit, the

  1569. praise, and the honor

  1570. goes to him.

  1571. I'm going to give

  1572. you one final

  1573. statistic, which is

  1574. even more striking.

  1575. So 7,000 people

  1576. groups, 3 billion

  1577. people, unreached.

  1578. There are 3,000

  1579. people groups.

  1580. These are often

  1581. very small, very

  1582. isolated, very

  1583. remote.

  1584. There are 3,000

  1585. people that are

  1586. described in this

  1587. way, unengaged,

  1588. unreached groups.

  1589. So there's

  1590. approximately 4,000

  1591. people groups, and

  1592. attempt to reach

  1593. them.

  1594. They're on

  1595. somebody's radar.

  1596. They're on a

  1597. mission organization.

  1598. They're on a

  1599. church.

  1600. Somebody is trying

  1601. to reach these

  1602. 4,000 people.

  1603. But there are

  1604. 3,000 people

  1605. groups, roughly

  1606. 200 million

  1607. people.

  1608. That means 40

  1609. people for every

  1610. Scottish person.

  1611. So 40 times the

  1612. population of

  1613. Scotland.

  1614. 200 million

  1615. people, and all

  1616. we know about

  1617. them is that they

  1618. exist as a people

  1619. group.

  1620. They have no

  1621. indigenous church.

  1622. They have no

  1623. indigenous believers

  1624. in Jesus, and

  1625. nobody is attempting

  1626. to reach them yet.

  1627. So humanly speaking,

  1628. they're lost with

  1629. absolutely no way of

  1630. being found, and no

  1631. prospect of being

  1632. found.

1633. So as poorly as we

  1634. evangelize Edinburgh,

  1635. at least the people

  1636. of Edinburgh have

  1637. access.

  1638. They could come to

  1639. Brunsfield tomorrow.

  1640. They could come to

  1641. Becloot tomorrow.

  1642. If they want the

  1643. Bible, they could get

  1644. any number of

  1645. copies of any

  1646. number of

  1647. editions of the

  1648. Bible.

  1649. But these 7,000

  1650. people groups can't

  1651. easily go to church,

  1652. and these 3,000

  1653. certainly can't go to

  1654. church.

  1655. There's no church for

  1656. them to go to.

  1657. There's no Bible for

  1658. them to purchase.

  1659. Even if they could

  1660. purchase it, it just

  1661. doesn't exist.

  1662. James Fraser, 1910,

  1663. comes to China, and

  1664. he encounters these

  1665. people, and they're

  1666. obvious.

  1667. They have different

  1668. culture.

  1669. They wear different

  1670. clothes.

  1671. They speak a different

  1672. language.

1673. And when he found out

  1674. that they had no

  1675. knowledge of Jesus, he

  1676. dedicated the rest of

1677. his life, the next 30

  1678. years, to learning their

  1679. language, to teaching

  1680. them the gospel.

1681. And God used him and

  1682. others powerfully,

  1683. remarkably, to reach this

  1684. group of people, so

1685. that today there is a

  1686. worshiping church among

  1687. the Lisu people in

  1688. Burma, in China, in

  1689. Thailand.

  1690. They know Jesus.

  1691. They love Jesus.

1692. They are passing on that

  1693. knowledge to their

  1694. children and passing on

  1695. that knowledge to the

  1696. rest of their people.

  1697. The task is great.

  1698. The challenges are many.

  1699. The resources are few.

  1700. The time is short.

1701. How do we look upon the

  1702. world?

1703. How do we look upon people

  1704. who don't know the

  1705. gospel?

1706. How do we look upon the

  1707. people groups that don't

  1708. have a meaningful

  1709. connection or a meaningful

  1710. opportunity?

  1711. Does that move our

  1712. hearts?

  1713. Does that enliven our

  1714. prayers?

  1715. Does that elicit a

  1716. response?

1717. Maybe you can't go, but

  1718. maybe you can send

  1719. someone.

  1720. Maybe you can't speak

  1721. that language, but

  1722. maybe you can devote

  1723. yourself to prayer.

  1724. Remember Fraser saying,

1725. I used to think it was

1726. prayer was the first and

  1727. teaching was the second,

  1728. but now I'm convinced

  1729. prayer is the first,

  1730. second, and third, and

  1731. teaching is the fourth.

  1732. I'm convicting myself

  1733. here.

  1734. If worldwide evangelism

  1735. depended upon the

  1736. frequency and fervency of

1737. my prayers, it would be

  1738. hopeless.

1739. But if we have a genuine

1740. love for Jesus, which we do,

1741. every believer has a genuine

1742. love for Jesus, and if we

1743. realize what Jesus has done

1744. for us, and if we realize

1745. what we now have, and if we

1746. realize what we once were, and

1747. if we realize where we are

1748. going, and if we understand

1749. that one day we will be in

  1750. that great multitude,

  1751. Revelation chapter 7, and

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

1752. we will have the white robes,

1753. and we will have the palm

1754. branches, and we will be in

  1755. that great multitude from

  1756. every language, nation,

1757. tribe, we know that that's

  1758. where we'll be.

1759. How can we best use our time

  1760. now?

1761. How can we best use our

  1762. talents now?

1763. How can we best use our

  1764. resources now?

1765. The work of mission is the

1766. work of taking Jesus, his

  1767. message, his life, his

  1768. death, his resurrection,

1769. taking the gospel of Jesus

1770. to people who do not yet

  1771. have it.

  1772. They might be our

  1773. neighbors, but let's spare a

  1774. thought, and let's consider

1775. what we have to say and what

1776. we can do for the three

  1777. billion people that are

  1778. unreached.

1779. For the 200 million people

1780. that are not only unreached,

1781. but not even engaged, can we

  1782. see those numbers reduced?

1783. Because as many as 7,000 are,

1784. the Lisu people are no longer

  1785. in that group.

1786. A hundred years ago they were.

  1787. Today they're not.

1788. What will we be able to

1789. celebrate 10 years from now?

1790. What will you be able to

1791. celebrate 50 years from now?

  1792. A vibrant, growing church?

  1793. Maybe planting new churches

1794. within Edinburgh, but will you

1795. as a church be able to

1796. celebrate and say, we have

1797. attempted by the grace of God

1798. to reach people in this world

1799. who have not heard the gospel

1800. and praise be to God.

1801. He has been pleased to use us,

1802. to use our prayers, to use our

1803. efforts, to use our service at

1804. home, abroad, and to the ends

1805. of the earth, and the praise and

1806. the glory is all his.

1807. In loving memory of James O.

  1808. Fraser, 1886 to 1938,

1809. how beautiful are the feet of

1810. those who bring good news.

1811. With deepest love, remember you

  1812. always, the Lisu Church.

1813. Can we pray that there'll be more

1814. and more monuments of living

1815. churches to those who have

1816. taken the good news of the

1817. Lord Jesus Christ and that

1818. many today who are lost will

1819. find themselves at that place

1820. in glory, in front of the Lamb,

1821. with the robes, holding the palm

1822. branches, singing the song of the

  1823. redeemed.

1824. So may God bless us.

  1825. May God encourage us.

  1826. May God challenge us.

  1827. May God inspire us.

1828. I tell you this, ordinary people

  1829. accomplish extraordinary things

  1830. because we have an

1831. extraordinary God, we have an

  1832. extraordinary Savior, and we

  1833. have an extraordinary gospel.

1834. May God bless you and us all.

  1835. Amen.
