  1. That's one way to break the ice, isn't it? Good morning everyone, are we well?

  2. We are well. Thank you so much, Eliza, and thank you so much everyone who's participated so far in our service.

  3. It's going to be great if you have sight of those verses in Luke 16 in front of you.

  4. We're going to be referring to it a lot as we go through this morning, so it's vital that we have the Scriptures opening in front of us.

  5. But let's pray as we come to Luke chapter 16 together.

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  6. Dear Father, we would still ourselves now and just recognize what we are doing this morning,

  7. that we have come together to hear your word preached.

  8. We've come here together to hear your voice.

  9. And Lord, we ask that as we come to your words now, that you would help us listen,

  10. and you would help us heed, and you would help us absorb.

  11. And by your Spirit, would you change us from the inside out, we ask for your glory.

  12. And we ask in Jesus' precious and strong name. Amen.

  13. So I wonder if you've ever been accused of being a selective listener.

  14. Selective listening, the art form, and I think it is an art form,

  15. of being able to be in a conversation with somebody and listen to the things that you want to listen to,

  16. and not listen to the things that you don't want to listen to.

  17. Selective listening.

  18. Apparently this happens all the day, all the time, in everyday conversation.

  19. So I remember reading an article not so long ago about the selective listening habits of men and women.

  20. And it has to be said, men, I think unfairly, we come off very poorly in this article.

  21. So, apparently the things that cause us to switch off, any talk of babies,

  22. the article, not me, okay, talk of babies, talk of soaps, don't mean like dove,

  23. I mean like neighbours, or you take your pick, of soaps.

  24. And ladies, don't think you're off the hook.

  25. Apparently it's sports for you guys, most especially golf, which I think is harsh.

  26. Cars is another one.

  27. Things that, as we speak to people, cause us to switch off.

  28. Apparently as a nation, one in three of us admit to having a conversation with somebody daily

  29. when our mind is somewhere else and we don't actually have a clue what the other person is saying to us.

  30. Selective listening.

  31. Well, today we're going to meet a man who is brilliant at selective listening.

  32. He's got God's Word.

  33. He's got his Bible and he's picking and he's choosing the things that he wants to listen to.

  34. And he's given a wide berth to the things that he doesn't want to listen to.

  35. And that's exactly what the Pharisees, who are in earshot of Jesus talking at this point,

  36. Jesus is speaking to them, that's exactly what they are doing with their lives.

  37. Now, if you've got a Bible here, let me just get us up to speed with the context and see the flow of Luke's gospel at this point.

  38. Chapter 16, verse 1.

  39. See how Jesus introduces that parable?

  40. There was a rich man.

  41. There was a rich man.

  42. Chapter 16, verse 19, our verses this morning.

  43. There was a rich man.

  44. Why does Jesus keep banging that drum?

  45. That's the question I'm asking as a reader.

  46. Because these Pharisees are rich.

  47. They're rich.

  48. And the question is, what are they doing with their riches, their possessions, their stuff?

  49. What are they doing with it?

  50. Again, see the flow.

  51. Chapter 15, the prodigal son.

  52. He wastes his father's possessions.

  53. Chapter 16, the dishonest manager.

  54. He wastes his master's possessions.

  55. And so this morning when we meet a rich man, the question we've got to be asking as readers is,

  56. what will this man do with his possessions?

  57. Do you see the flow?

  58. God has blessed these Pharisees with money and possessions,

  59. but they're choosing to ignore what God has said they are to do with the things that he's given them.

  60. Now, why would they do that?

  61. Well, Luke tells us, verse 14 of chapter 16,

  62. they loved money.

  63. Not just that they had money,

  64. they loved money.

  65. And so instead of caring for the poor,

  66. of sharing God's heart for those who cannot help themselves,

  67. for being a help to the helpless,

  68. those people who are on their doorstep,

  69. what they're doing with their riches is that they are hoarding it,

  70. and they're loving their money and possessions.

  71. And what it's doing is it's choking their compassion

  72. for their fellow man,

  73. for their fellow Jew,

  74. and it's causing them to take their eyes off the God who they're claiming to worship

  75. and focus on them.

  76. They love money.

  77. Now, I don't know if you've noticed this as we've gone through this bit of Luke's Gospel,

  78. and I must say,

  79. this is one of the joys of doing this consecutively.

  80. You see it, don't you?

  81. Jesus has got an awful lot to say about money.

  82. An awful lot to say about money.

  83. Here's some statistics I was reading this week.

  84. One in every seven verses in Luke's Gospel is about money.

  85. Eleven out of the 39 parables that Jesus tells that are recorded in the Gospels

  86. are about money and treasure.

  87. Jesus has got an awful lot to say about money.

  88. And this is why it's really struck me this week

  89. that I need to take heed of what Jesus says about money.

  90. Is it because we're rich?

  91. Do you know how I know that?

  92. I googled it.

  93. And there's this website that you can go on to called GlobalRichList.net.

  94. I'm not joking, right?

  95. GlobalRichList.net by the charity Care International.

  96. GlobalRichList.net.

  97. You enter your salary and it tells you,

  98. I don't know how they figure it out,

  99. but it tells you how rich you are compared to the rest of the world.

  100. Now the average UK family having the average UK household income in 2017,

  101. do you know where that put you in ranking in the world?

  102. In the top 0.87%.

  103. That's the average UK salary in this country.

  104. The average UK household income.

  105. We are rich.

  106. And I walk to church every morning.

  107. This is how it plays out in my life.

  108. I walk to church every morning.

  109. As I walk down George Street.

  110. So go up onto George Street.

  111. George Street, Lothian Roads.

  112. That's my route, okay?

  113. Go down George Street.

  114. What do I see?

  115. I walk past suit shops.

  116. And in my head I'm thinking,

  117. oh, I'd love to have a suit like that.

  118. I'd love to pretend to be a footballer.

  119. Just dressing like that.

  120. Walk from the suit shop.

  121. Walk past the ESPC shop.

  122. And I think, what's in the windows?

  123. Just houses, right?

  124. Just constantly going.

  125. Houses, houses.

  126. I think, oh, it'd be great to live there.

  127. I could dress like a footballer.

  128. I could live like a footballer.

  129. So easy, isn't it, in our world just to get sucked in,

  130. to get lured in to the deceitfulness of riches?

  131. How easy is it in our own lives?

  132. And I know I'm speaking from my own heart here.

  133. To love money.

  134. To love the things that God has given me.

  135. And instead of viewing them as his possessions

  136. that are just unknown to me,

  137. that he's blessed me with,

  138. I view them as my own.

  139. And I'll use them for my own kingdom.

  140. Thank you very much.

  141. This is the temptation I find in my heart all the time.

  142. How easy is it to get distracted by money?

  143. Now listen, there's nothing wrong with having money.

  144. The question we've got to ask ourselves, though,

  145. is does it have us?

  146. Does it have us?

  147. Does the drive, the longing for stuff,

  148. does it consume us?

  149. Or does Jesus have us?

  150. And does Jesus consume us?

  151. And do his priorities, his kingdom, a love for him,

  152. does that drive us?

  153. That's the question, isn't it?

  154. So these Pharisees,

  155. Jesus is accusing them of being selective listeners.

  156. And all of a sudden when you see it in that context,

  157. actually what Jesus has to say to these men

  158. comes a lot closer to home.

  159. So here's what's going to happen this morning.

  160. Jesus is going to tell this parable

  161. of the rich man and Lazarus

  162. as a way of getting the Pharisees

  163. to ask themselves some searching questions

  164. about their lives.

  165. I'm going to try and put these

  166. so that we can understand what the challenge is, okay?

  167. So there's just three questions this morning.

  168. That's all I want us to see.

  169. Here's the first question.

  170. How are you living?

  171. Verses 19 to 21.

  172. How are you living?

  173. So this is where we get into the parable.

  174. See that we meet the rich man at verse 19.

  175. Now look how Jesus paints the picture of this man.

  176. He dresses in what color?

  177. Purple.

  178. Now purple clothes are a sign of affluence

  179. because purple dye,

  180. it comes from this very rare shellfish.

  181. Now if you're able to get a lot of it

  182. and dye your whole clothes,

  183. that means you're very rich.

  184. And it's not like this man,

  185. do you notice it as we read the text?

  186. It's not like he's just got one purple t-shirt

  187. that he wears day after day after day after day.

  188. He wears purple.

  189. So his wardrobe, presumably,

  190. has got a lot of purple in it,

  191. which means he has got some serious cash

  192. and he wants the whole world to know it.

  193. Look at Jesus go on.

  194. He wears fine linen.

  195. Now that word there literally meaning undergarments.

  196. I think we're meant to laugh.

  197. Jesus is saying this guy is so rich,

  198. he's so posh,

  199. that even his boxers,

  200. even his briefs,

  201. are first class.

  202. And he lives in luxury,

  203. not occasionally.

  204. Do you notice every day?

  205. You've got an ESV there.

  206. It says that he feasted sumptuously every day.

  207. I mean,

  208. every night is brought to you by waitress's finest.

  209. That's this guy's house.

  210. And how does this man do this every day?

  211. Every day.

  212. I don't believe for a minute

  213. that he's all night peeling the potatoes,

  214. carving the meat,

  215. setting the table.

  216. He's clearly got servants

  217. who are doing this round the clock

  218. so that he can live his lifestyle.

  219. He's a rich man.

  220. And he's got a gate.

  221. Do you see that?

  222. He's got a gate.

  223. Now most likely it's a grand gate.

  224. And the gate is where the action happens

  225. in this parable

  226. because he is living his life of luxury

  227. at one side of the gate

  228. and who's at the other side of the gate?

  229. Lazarus.

  230. Now it's really interesting,

  231. as far as I can find,

  232. as far as I can see,

  233. that Lazarus is the only character

  234. in the whole of Jesus' parables

  235. that gets a name.

  236. He's the only one.

  237. And that's significant.

  238. Because what does Lazarus' name mean?

  239. It means God helps me.

  240. Or God helped me.

  241. And you say to yourself,

  242. well, is that some kind of sick joke

  243. that Jesus is telling here?

  244. What an ironic name.

  245. God helps me.

  246. Look at the description of him.

  247. He's a beggar.

  248. Perhaps he was dropped off

  249. at the rich man's gate every morning.

  250. To beg.

  251. He's covered in sores.

  252. To add insult to injury.

  253. The dogs are his only friends.

  254. They come and lick him.

  255. And he's hungry.

  256. And he's longing to eat the scraps,

  257. to eat the spares,

  258. to eat anything that's going to fall

  259. from this rich man's table.

  260. Lazarus is destitute.

  261. Remember in this day,

  262. there's no help from the state.

  263. There's no benefits package.

  264. There's no free health care.

  265. This man is helpless.

  266. Lazarus has got no hope.

  267. And so on the one side of the gate

  268. is this rich man.

  269. And at the other side of the gate

  270. is God helps me.

  271. Now there may only be a short distance

  272. between these men,

  273. but you see how Jesus is painting the picture

  274. of the massive contrast

  275. that exists between them.

  276. Jesus as he introduces us

  277. to these two men,

  278. as he draws out the contrast,

  279. he's asking the Pharisees

  280. and the crowds.

  281. How are you living?

  282. How are you living?

  283. Do you see yourself in this rich man?

  284. Do you see his excesses?

  285. Do you see his utter neglect

  286. for his fellow man?

  287. This rich man doesn't get it.

  288. This rich man is a selective listener.

  289. The question is,

  290. will the Pharisees get it?

  291. And the question for us today

  292. is, will we get it?

  293. How are you living?

  294. Here's the second question,

  295. verses 22 to 26.

  296. Where are you heading?

  297. The rich man and Lazarus,

  298. they may well be living polar opposite lives,

  299. but do you see how their lives

  300. meet the same fate?

  301. What was it that Benjamin Franklin said

  302. were the two certainties in life?

  303. Death and taxes.

  304. We'll park the taxes for just now.

  305. But he's banging on the money,

  306. is he not?

  307. It's true.

  308. Death is the great equalizer.

  309. Death knows no class distinction.

  310. Both of these men die.

  311. You know, last time I checked,

  312. the death rate was still up

  313. around about the 100% mark.

  314. Both these men die.

  315. This is what he's telling us.

  316. The same fate comes to both.

  317. They both died.

  318. There was a contrast in life,

  319. but do you see how Jesus tells

  320. these Pharisees

  321. there was a contrast in death?

  322. Jesus speaks about Lazarus first.

  323. Here he is.

  324. God helps me.

  325. Is that true?

  326. Is that going to be true for him?

  327. What are we told?

  328. The angels carried him

  329. to Abraham's side.

  330. Now you say,

  331. well, what's Abraham doing there?

  332. How's he snuck in there?

  333. Well, he's the father of the faith.

  334. And here he is,

  335. welcoming, embracing Lazarus.

  336. And so Lazarus' name

  337. was clearly not just

  338. some wishful thinking

  339. by his parents.

  340. It was true for him.

  341. That he trusted that God

  342. would ultimately save him.

  343. That he trusted that God

  344. was who he says he is

  345. in his word.

  346. That he is the father

  347. of the helpless.

  348. And ultimately,

  349. God is going to be the one

  350. that saves him.

  351. It reminded me this week

  352. of the old hymn

  353. sung by the American slaves

  354. back in the day,

  355. oppressed,

  356. destitute.

  357. What did they sing?

  358. Swing low, sweet chariot.

  359. Now how that got to

  360. Twickenham today,

  361. I have no idea.

  362. But swing low, sweet chariot.

  363. So they used to sing,

  364. I looked over Jordan,

  365. what did I see?

  366. Coming forth to carry me home.

  367. A band of angels

  368. coming after me,

  369. coming forth to carry me home.

  370. That's the kind of thing

  371. going on here with Lazarus,

  372. I imagine.

  373. The truth that one day

  374. my God will liberate me.

  375. The truth that one day

  376. my God will vindicate me.

  377. The truth that one day

  378. my God will come to save me.

  379. And you have to say

  380. that as we read

  381. about Lazarus here,

  382. welcomed,

  383. comforted,

  384. loved,

  385. embraced

  386. at the father's side,

  387. at Abraham's side,

  388. we have to say

  389. that's a beautiful picture.

  390. Doesn't it?

  391. That's a beautiful picture

  392. of who our God is.

  393. But look at the rich man.

  394. Like Lazarus,

  395. he dies.

  396. Text tells us

  397. he was buried.

  398. Imagine it was

  399. a no expense

  400. spared burial.

  401. Is he at Abraham's side?

  402. Verse 23,

  403. no.

  404. Look at the description.

  405. He's in torment.

  406. He's in anguish.

  407. Jesus painting it out here.

  408. He's in hell.

  409. Now,

  410. why is he there?

  411. That's a precise question

  412. that he's asking himself.

  413. Do you see how he makes

  414. his appeal to Abraham?

  415. Verse 24,

  416. what does he call him?

  417. This is key to see this.

  418. Verse 24,

  419. Father Abraham.

  420. Notice what he calls him there.

  421. Father Abraham.

  422. So what does he do?

  423. He plays the relation card.

  424. So Abraham,

  425. am I not one of your people?

  426. We share a family tree,

  427. do we not?

  428. We share a common heritage.

  429. So why are we not

  430. sharing eternity together?

  431. And he sees Lazarus.

  432. Now,

  433. I love this.

  434. I love what goes on here.

  435. This man's so accustomed

  436. to barking orders.

  437. Do you see how he

  438. talks past Lazarus?

  439. Does he even acknowledge him?

  440. He talks past him

  441. and he sees Abraham

  442. and he asks him,

  443. would you send Lazarus here?

  444. Would you send Lazarus here

  445. to help me in my anguish?

  446. Now,

  447. notice in passing

  448. that this rich man,

  449. he knows Lazarus' name.

  450. Do you see that in the text?

  451. He knows his name.

  452. And it's not because

  453. Lazarus has got to heaven

  454. and Abraham has given him

  455. one of those conference lanyards

  456. that says Lazarus on.

  457. It's like,

  458. oh,

  459. I never knew you were called Lazarus.

  460. He knows his name.

  461. Now,

  462. why does he know his name?

  463. Because he recognizes him

  464. as being Lazarus.

  465. He used to sit

  466. outside his house

  467. behind the gate

  468. and he used to beg every day.

  469. He recognizes him.

  470. This is Lazarus.

  471. So,

  472. this rich man

  473. can't claim innocence here.

  474. It's not like

  475. he can say,

  476. if only I'd known

  477. you were there,

  478. Lazarus.

  479. If only I'd known,

  480. maybe I would have come down

  481. and given you a hug,

  482. invited you in,

  483. we could have chewed the fat

  484. over a hog roast.

  485. I just didn't know.

  486. It can't kill him

  487. innocence,

  488. this man.

  489. Lazarus,

  490. I knew he was there.

  491. He knows his name.

  492. He knew he was there.

  493. And God,

  494. who we saw last week

  495. at verse 15,

  496. he knows the heart

  497. and he knows

  498. that this rich man knows.

  499. And so,

  500. Abraham responds,

  501. verse 25,

  502. rich man,

  503. you had your time

  504. in the sun.

  505. You had your good things.

  506. You had your chance.

  507. You had your opportunity.

  508. You had your Bible

  509. and you made your choice.

  510. I'm sorry,

  511. but eternity for you,

  512. key word at verse 26,

  513. is fixed.

  514. Here's a little lesson

  515. that I've picked up

  516. along the way

  517. when it comes to

  518. understanding a passage

  519. like this.

  520. And it's this,

  521. that the plain things

  522. are the main things

  523. and the main things

  524. are the plain things.

  525. Okay?

  526. Plain things

  527. are the main things

  528. and the main things

  529. are the plain things.

  530. So,

  531. what is Jesus teaching here?

  532. Will you be able to see

  533. heaven from hell?

  534. Honestly,

  535. don't think so.

  536. Honestly,

  537. don't know.

  538. Okay?

  539. Will you be able to communicate

  540. between the two?

  541. Honestly,

  542. I don't think so,

  543. but I don't know.

  544. There's rabbit holes here

  545. that we can take

  546. that I don't think

  547. we're being invited to take.

  548. What is the main thing

  549. from this parable?

  550. What is the plain thing

  551. that Jesus is teaching

  552. the Pharisees here?

  553. Surely it's this,

  554. that the choices

  555. that we make in this life

  556. have consequences

  557. for the next.

  558. See,

  559. that's the plain thing

  560. from this parable.

  561. And you see that

  562. come out in the rich man's reaction.

  563. Do you see how he plays

  564. the race card

  565. to Abraham?

  566. He doesn't play

  567. the grace card

  568. to Abraham.

  569. What does he say?

  570. He says,

  571. I deserve to be in heaven

  572. because of my heritage.

  573. Whereas the consistent

  574. testimony of Scripture

  575. is that we are saved

  576. by grace alone.

  577. That God sent

  578. his promised son.

  579. That's amazing grace.

  580. The son died on the cross

  581. for our sin.

  582. That is amazing grace.

  583. And that through faith

  584. in Jesus

  585. and what he did,

  586. as Charles alluded to earlier,

  587. we are ransomed,

  588. we are healed,

  589. we are restored,

  590. and we are forgiven.

  591. That is amazing grace.

  592. And that God

  593. has adopted us

  594. as his children.

  595. He's given us

  596. a new heart.

  597. He's taken out

  598. that heart of stone

  599. and he's put in there

  600. a heart that beats for him,

  601. a new heart.

  602. And we have a quite

  603. incredible life to live.

  604. We have a quite

  605. incredible destiny

  606. ahead of us

  607. of delighting

  608. in his presence

  609. and singing his praises

  610. for all eternity.

  611. That

  612. is amazing

  613. grace.

  614. It is by grace

  615. that we have been

  616. saved.

  617. As the old hymn puts it,

  618. sing the wondrous love

  619. of Jesus,

  620. sing his mercy

  621. and his grace.

  622. In the mansions

  623. bright and blessed

  624. he'll prepare

  625. for us a place.

  626. Oh, where would we be,

  627. friends,

  628. without God's grace

  629. in our lives?

  630. Where would we be?

  631. But this rich man

  632. has chosen

  633. to ignore God's words

  634. and ignore Lazarus

  635. and Abraham's making

  636. it quite clear

  637. that that race card,

  638. that I ain't gonna save you.

  639. He's a selective listener.

  640. This rich man

  641. doesn't get it.

  642. Will the Pharisees

  643. get it?

  644. Will they see that

  645. there's still space

  646. for grace?

  647. Will we get it?

  648. Where are you heading?

  649. Here's the third question,

  650. verses 27 to 31.

  651. What are you trusting?

  652. And so as Jesus

  653. tells the story,

  654. it seems like

  655. this rich man,

  656. as he hears Abraham

  657. explain things,

  658. he kind of comes

  659. to see that there's

  660. nothing he can do

  661. to change his fate.

  662. What does he do?

  663. He begins to think

  664. about his family.

  665. Again,

  666. he's still barking

  667. the orders.

  668. Do you notice this?

  669. Would you send Lazarus

  670. to go and speak to them,

  671. Father Abraham?

  672. I don't know how

  673. Lazarus puts up for this.

  674. I find it really fascinating

  675. that Lazarus

  676. doesn't even speak

  677. in this whole parable.

  678. Look at Abraham's response.

  679. Verse 29,

  680. they've got Moses

  681. and the prophets.

  682. They've got their

  683. Old Testaments.

  684. So this Jewish family,

  685. they will likely heard

  686. Moses and the prophets

  687. read and taught

  688. every week

  689. as they go to synagogue.

  690. They've heard it taught

  691. of who their God is,

  692. what he's like,

  693. what he's done for them

  694. as his people,

  695. what he's asked of them

  696. as his people,

  697. and how he's warned them

  698. down through the ages

  699. through Moses

  700. and the prophets

  701. about the consequences

  702. of keeping ignoring

  703. what he's telling them.

  704. They have it all,

  705. says Abraham.

  706. They have it all.

  707. They have it right there

  708. written.

  709. The question is not

  710. do they know?

  711. The question is

  712. will they listen?

  713. Fair enough,

  714. says the rich man,

  715. but if only you could

  716. give them a sign,

  717. if only you could

  718. give them a sign,

  719. I bet my bottom dollar,

  720. and he's probably got

  721. a lot of dollars, okay,

  722. bet my bottom dollar

  723. that they would listen.

  724. What does Abraham say?

  725. No, they wouldn't.

  726. Even if somebody

  727. came back from the dead,

  728. strong language,

  729. isn't it?

  730. Even if somebody

  731. came back from the dead,

  732. they still wouldn't listen

  733. because believing

  734. is not a matter

  735. of lack of knowledge.

  736. Failure to believe

  737. is because of a hard heart

  738. that just doesn't

  739. want to listen.

  740. This is what Abraham's saying.

  741. And we see that

  742. in the Gospels,

  743. do we not?

  744. Think about what we see.

  745. John 11,

  746. the other Lazarus

  747. that's in Scripture.

  748. Jesus raises him

  749. from the dead.

  750. And what did the Pharisees say?

  751. I tell you what,

  752. they don't say,

  753. oh Jesus,

  754. we've got you

  755. completely wrong.

  756. Now we understand,

  757. now we surrender.

  758. What do they say?

  759. We say we want

  760. Lazarus dead

  761. because he's telling people

  762. that Jesus brought him

  763. back from the dead

  764. and he needs to stop talking.

  765. Even Jesus himself

  766. when he rises from the dead,

  767. what is Matthew recording?

  768. You can check it out later

  769. towards the end of his Gospel.

  770. What does he record?

  771. Jesus rises from the dead.

  772. The reports are there.

  773. What did the Pharisees say?

  774. The religious readers.

  775. Not Jesus.

  776. We get it now.

  777. We get it now.

  778. Please forgive us.

  779. We get it now.

  780. No, they say,

  781. they go to the guards.

  782. And they say,

  783. here's a large sum of money.

  784. Would you tell people

  785. that the disciples came

  786. and they stole the body?

  787. Because we cannot risk

  788. this getting around.

  789. And when you begin to see

  790. it in that context,

  791. you see that Abraham here

  792. is bang on the money.

  793. He's bang on the money.

  794. They will not be convinced

  795. even if somebody rises

  796. from the dead.

  797. The question is not,

  798. do they know?

  799. The question is,

  800. will they listen?

  801. I remember as a young Christian

  802. at university

  803. walking along the road

  804. with my mate from football

  805. and he said,

  806. Graham,

  807. I wouldn't mind believing

  808. but I just would want

  809. to see something more.

  810. I just want to see

  811. something more.

  812. And I'll be honest,

  813. as a young Christian,

  814. a new Christian,

  815. that threw me.

  816. It threw me.

  817. Begin to ask yourself.

  818. Begin to pray in my mind,

  819. God,

  820. would you just speak to him?

  821. And then you begin

  822. to think about it

  823. and you think,

  824. well,

  825. what do I actually believe

  826. as a Christian?

  827. What do I believe

  828. the Bible is?

  829. I believe it's,

  830. as Calvin called it,

  831. God gone public

  832. with himself.

  833. That God's made himself known,

  834. that God's on full disclosure,

  835. that God has spoken.

  836. This is what the Bible is.

  837. What a privilege.

  838. We were looking

  839. at the Reformation earlier.

  840. What a privilege it is.

  841. And men and women

  842. down the generations

  843. have given their lives

  844. that we can have the Bible

  845. in our own language.

  846. That we can know

  847. what God has said,

  848. that we can read about Jesus,

  849. that we can read about

  850. God's rescue plan

  851. from before eternity

  852. to rescue men and women

  853. to himself through his Son.

  854. God has spoken.

  855. What does my friend need?

  856. He needs the Bible.

  857. And he needs me

  858. to read it with him.

  859. Again,

  860. just beginning to pray,

  861. God,

  862. would you give him a sign?

  863. Again,

  864. thinking to myself,

  865. working that through,

  866. well,

  867. what kind of sign?

  868. Thinking it through.

  869. But I can trust

  870. these Gospels.

  871. They're historically reliable.

  872. What are they telling me?

  873. They're telling me

  874. that Jesus died

  875. and Jesus rose

  876. and Jesus ascended.

  877. If he's not going to be

  878. convinced by that miracle,

  879. I don't know what

  880. other miracle

  881. he's going to be

  882. convinced by.

  883. God,

  884. would you

  885. save him?

  886. Abraham's

  887. bang on the money.

  888. He's bang on the money.

  889. And so our conviction

  890. sitting here this morning

  891. is God's people

  892. has got to be

  893. heaven's conviction.

  894. And that is that

  895. the Bible

  896. is trustworthy.

  897. And our confidence

  898. can be in

  899. every single word

  900. that is proceeded

  901. from the mouth of God

  902. that we have in front of us

  903. in our own language.

  904. And I'll tell you

  905. how this works out

  906. in our evangelism.

  907. I've got another friend

  908. who I read

  909. John's Gospel with.

  910. Do you know how long

  911. we've been doing it for?

  912. Four years.

  913. Taught me that

  914. evangelism is no

  915. short-term thing.

  916. It's about relationships.

  917. It's about people.

  918. But it's also taught me

  919. that this conviction

  920. is true.

  921. That my confidence

  922. that my friend

  923. will come to meet Jesus

  924. is not in my ability

  925. to answer his questions.

  926. My confidence

  927. is not in my

  928. apologetic skills

  929. to explain stuff to him.

  930. My confidence

  931. is in the word of God.

  932. And I go on the basis

  933. that my friend,

  934. wherever he stands

  935. before the Lord,

  936. I don't know,

  937. my friend needs

  938. what I need

  939. and your friends

  940. need what you need

  941. and that is

  942. he needs to meet Jesus.

  943. He needs to meet Jesus.

  944. And so how is he

  945. going to meet Jesus?

  946. Well, he's going to meet him,

  947. he's going to encounter him

  948. in the pages

  949. of the Gospels.

  950. And not just the Gospels,

  951. the whole Bible

  952. is pointing to him,

  953. God's rescue plan.

  954. How is my friend

  955. going to know?

  956. I've got to sit down

  957. and read the Bible with him.

  958. Four years ago.

  959. Four years.

  960. I'm not going anywhere

  961. anytime soon.

  962. He and she,

  963. so we're going to keep doing it.

  964. But four years

  965. because of this conviction.

  966. What does my friend need?

  967. My friend needs Jesus.

  968. What do I need?

  969. I need Jesus.

  970. Here's a challenge

  971. before you go this morning.

  972. Is there somebody

  973. in your life,

  974. is there a friend,

  975. is there a colleague,

  976. is there a mate at work,

  977. whoever,

  978. mate from sport,

  979. whatever you do,

  980. could you read the Bible?

  981. Will you be faithful

  982. with them?

  983. And if not,

  984. will you pray

  985. for my friend

  986. that you become

  987. to know Jesus?

  988. Come and speak to us afterwards.

  989. Anybody that you've seen

  990. up the front here this morning,

  991. some terrific resources

  992. that we can recommend

  993. about sitting down

  994. one to one with a friend

  995. and reading the Bible with them.

  996. What our friends need,

  997. same thing that we need,

  998. we need to meet Jesus.

  999. He's glorious.

  1000. He is glorious.

1001. They need to meet Jesus.

  1002. This rich man

  1003. doesn't get it.

  1004. He's a selective listener.

1005. Will the Pharisees get it?

  1006. Will we get it?

  1007. What are you trusting?

1008. Are you here this morning

1009. and as we bring this

  1010. to a close,

1011. are you here this morning

  1012. and you're currently

  1013. being a selective listener?

1014. Are you here this morning

  1015. and money and possessions

  1016. are distracting you?

  1017. They're choking your love

  1018. for the Lord.

1019. I wonder if a lot of us

  1020. this morning,

1021. and I include me in this,

1022. we've got some work to do,

1023. business to do with God.

  1024. As I close,

1025. I was reminded this week

  1026. of the place

1027. that I went to buy

  1028. my first ever CD.

  1029. Don't anyone else

  1030. remembers HMV?

1031. Is it still going, HMV?

  1032. Is it not going?

  1033. Wow, I'm old.

  1034. There it is.

  1035. HMV.

  1036. Is it still going?

  1037. It's.

  1038. Host and Terminal.

  1039. Okay.

  1040. Still going.

  1041. Not as frequent,

  1042. but they're still going.

1043. Life in the old dog yet.

  1044. Here we are.

  1045. HMV.

1046. Do you know what HMV stands for?

1047. I only learned this recently.

  1048. His master's voice.

1049. So here we are this morning

  1050. talking about selective listening.

1051. I think this is a wonderful example

  1052. of what it means

1053. to listen to our master's voice.

1054. Do you know the story of this dog?

1055. So there was this man

  1056. called Mark Barrow.

  1057. When Mark Barrow died,

  1058. his brother Francis

1059. inherited two things for him.

  1060. He wasn't very rich.

  1061. He inherited two things.

  1062. The dog,

  1063. called Nipper,

  1064. and the gramophone

1065. completely with some of Mark's

1066. recordings of his own voice.

  1067. Francis noted

  1068. that every time

1069. he turned on that gramophone,

1070. every time that he played

  1071. Mark's voice,

  1072. that Nipper would go

  1073. and listen.

  1074. I'm distracted.

  1075. Devoted.

  1076. We'd go and listen.

  1077. I think it's a wonderful example

  1078. of what it means

  1079. to listen well.

1080. Jesus is having a go

  1081. at the Pharisees

  1082. for their poor listening,

  1083. for their selective listening.

  1084. You see what Jesus

  1085. is calling us to?

  1086. Attentive,

  1087. anticipatory,

  1088. all out love

  1089. for every single word

  1090. of his.

  1091. I think David Platt,

  1092. he's an American pastor

  1093. and author,

1094. he captures this so well

1095. and with this we close.

  1096. He says,

  1097. Radical obedience to Christ

  1098. risks losing all things,

  1099. but in the end

1100. such risk finds it reward

  1101. in Christ

  1102. Christ.

  1103. And he

  1104. is more than enough

  1105. for us.

  1106. Amen.

  1107. Let's pray together.

1108. Maybe in the quiet now

1109. you just want to offer up

  1110. your own prayer

  1111. as we respond

  1112. to God's word

  1113. as we've heard it

  1114. this morning.

  1115. Dearest Father,

  1116. we would ask

1117. that you would help us

  1118. to be those

  1119. who don't simply

  1120. offer you selective

  1121. obedience,

  1122. but rather,

  1123. dear Father,

  1124. by your Spirit

1125. who is living in us,

  1126. would you make us

  1127. those who are

  1128. sacrificial

  1129. and radical

  1130. in our obedience

  1131. to you.

  1132. Oh dear Father,

1133. we know our own weakness,

  1134. we know our hearts

  1135. that so often wander,

  1136. so Father,

  1137. we take the line

  1138. of that song,

  1139. would you come

  1140. and bind our wandering

  1141. hearts to you.

1142. And so this is our prayer

  1143. made in the strong

  1144. name of Jesus.

  1145. Amen.
