  1. Well, good evening. Great to be with you again at Brunsfield. Thank you so much for your kind invitation.

  2. We're going to be looking at Genesis chapter 3 tonight in the main.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  3. So if you've got a Bible handy, it would be great to have it open at Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  4. Let me just mention one or two FIEC things. You'd expect me to do that.

  5. I'm sure the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, I work full-time for them in Scotland and the north of England.

  6. I think I've had opportunity to mention one or two things about them on previous visits.

  7. But the work is going ahead. It's great that the network of churches is growing.

  8. A couple of churches recently just voted to affiliate to FIEC.

  9. And it's great just to see that work growing, but not just for the sake of growth,

  10. because of the opportunities it gives us for gospel partnership and work.

  11. And among the particular things we've been involved in recently are the Pathways Ministry.

  12. This may have been brought to your attention already, but we've been meeting with church leaders around Scotland

  13. to share with them something of the vision of Pathways,

  14. which is to help churches create a training culture within the local congregation

  15. to equip men and women for gospel service.

  16. And then in particular, we have a day conference coming up in January this year.

  17. It's going to be in Perth at the Tayside Christian Fellowship Church.

  18. And that's going to be for anybody who is thinking about vocational Christian ministry,

  19. whether part-time or full-time.

  20. So perhaps you're thinking, perhaps God is calling me to serve him in some kind of set-aside way,

  21. in some capacity.

  22. It could be as an evangelist, as a youth worker, as a pastor, as a women's worker, whatever that is.

  23. Then this could be a day that would be really helpful for you when experienced church leaders

  24. will help you think through some of the issues that you need to be considering

  25. as you weigh up that sense of call.

  26. So I've got some leaflets.

  27. I think Graham already had some of these, but I draw that to your attention.

  28. The course that we're doing in independent church ministry is continuing at ETS this year.

  29. We've run that for two previous years.

  30. Tim Foster, one of your folks here, one of the graduates.

  31. That's a rather grand way of putting it, but he did the course and got his certificate

  32. in independent church ministry.

  33. And we're continuing to run that at ETS as a way that we can help equip

  34. and support future church leaders in independent churches of all types.

  35. And then finally, it's great to be involved in mission.

  36. FIC in Scotland is currently linked with five church plants in various areas around the country,

  37. giving them practical support from Orkney down to the central belt.

  38. So it's really encouraging to see that church planting going on,

  39. to see new fellowships starting and to be able to partner with them

  40. and to help them as they find their feet and get started.

  41. And we had a mission forum day in March at Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh

  42. where we brought church leaders from across Scotland and beyond together.

  43. And one of the projects that has come out of that is a potential new church plant in Aviemore next year.

  44. And we are bringing together a team and support and various components that can make that happen.

  45. So pray for that.

  46. Aviemore, surprise me, is an area, a town with very little gospel witness in it.

  47. Almost nothing, not quite nothing, there never is nothing in God's mercy,

  48. but actually a town that really needs a fresh, outward-looking, evangelistically-minded gospel church.

  49. It's a growing town, one and a half thousand new homes.

  50. Planning permission has been granted for those in the coming years.

  51. So really appreciate your prayers that that vision comes to fruition.

  52. So that's just a little taster of some of the things that are going on in Scotland at the moment

  53. that FIC is connected with.

  54. As we come to Scripture tonight, let me just give a little apology.

  55. I wrote down in my diary way back when I think Graeme contacted me,

  56. Genesis 3 and 4, the impact of the fall.

  57. And we're looking a bit narrower tonight, obviously from your series on the particular aspect of work.

  58. So tonight's going to be a bit broader.

  59. We'll try and pick up on the work element of that as we go.

  60. But if it feels slightly broader, then that's all my fault for not paying attention enough at the time.

  61. But it's all God's Word, and I'm sure it will be profitable to us by the Spirit.

  62. Let me just pray as we read God's Word, as we come to consider it in more detail.

  63. Heavenly Father, we do thank you for your Word.

  64. We thank you that it is true.

  65. We thank you that it is living.

  66. We thank you that it is relevant to us today.

  67. We thank you that it speaks into our lives, that it guides us, that it is a light in a dark world.

  68. And so, Father, we do pray that as we come to it now,

  69. that you would give us ears to hear your voice,

  70. to understand the truth that you have laid down in Scripture,

  71. and to be better equipped to serve and love the Lord Jesus Christ.

  72. Father, grant that prayer we ask in Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. So Genesis then, we're going to just pick up a couple of verses in chapter 2,

  75. by way of background.

  76. So chapter 2 and verse 15.

  77. The Lord took the man, it's Adam, and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

  78. And the Lord commanded the man,

  79. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden,

  80. but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  81. For when you eat from it, you will certainly die.

  82. Genesis chapter 3, verse 1.

    Genesis 3:1

  83. Now the snake was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  84. He said to the woman, Eve,

  85. Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  86. The woman said to the snake,

  87. We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

  88. but God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden,

  89. and you must not touch it or you will die.

  90. You will certainly not die, the snake said to the woman.

  91. For God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God,

  92. knowing good and evil.

  93. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye,

  94. and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

  95. she took some and ate it.

  96. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.

  97. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked.

  98. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  99. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

  100. And they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  101. But the Lord God called to the man,

  102. Where are you?

  103. He answered,

  104. I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.

  105. And he said,

  106. Who told you that you were naked?

  107. Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?

  108. The man said,

  109. The woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.

  110. Then the Lord God said to the woman,

  111. What is this you have done?

  112. The woman said,

  113. The snake deceived me, and I ate.

  114. So the Lord God said to the snake,

  115. Because you have done this,

  116. Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals.

  117. You will crawl in your belly, and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

  118. And I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  119. and between your offspring and hers.

  120. He will crush your head, and you will crush his heel.

  121. To the woman he said,

  122. I will make your pains and childbearing very severe.

  123. With painful labor you will give birth to children.

  124. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.

  125. To Adam he said,

  126. Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you,

  127. you must not eat from it.

  128. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  129. Through painful toil you will eat food from it.

  130. All the days of your life.

  131. It will produce thorns and thistles for you,

  132. and you will eat the plants of the field.

  133. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground,

  134. since from it you were taken.

  135. For dust you are, and to dust you will return.

  136. And then verse 23.

  137. So the Lord God banished him from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

  138. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the garden of Eden,

  139. Chirubim, and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

  140. Amen.

  141. And may God bless too, is the reading of his holy and inspired words.

  142. A number of years ago I remember having a conversation with an atheist,

  143. it was actually a relative of mine,

  144. and I just asked him up front,

  145. Why don't you believe in God?

  146. And the answer he gave to me was,

  147. Because if God had made the world,

  148. he would have made a better one than this.

  149. And for many of course,

  150. the state of the world as we look around is a real problem

  151. when it comes to having faith.

  152. Where is this all-powerful, loving God

  153. when crimes are committed,

  154. when wars are started,

  155. when people are being abused?

  156. How can you expect me to believe in a God

  157. who would allow such misery?

  158. And yet at the end of Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  159. when God completed his work of creation,

  160. we read that it was a place of perfection,

  161. harmony,

  162. beauty,

  163. and peace.

  164. At the apex of which was humanity.

  165. Man and woman,

  166. male and female,

  167. made in the image of God.

  168. Male and female created to know God

  169. and to live in the closest of all relationships with God.

  170. People who were made to care

  171. and rule over the earth

  172. under God,

  173. kindly,

  174. and responsibly.

  175. So what happened?

  176. Why did the world,

  177. made by a loving God,

  178. so full of potential and hope,

  179. become the place that we know

  180. and experience and live in today?

  181. A place which is marred by conflict,

  182. hardship,

  183. division,

  184. and suffering.

  185. It's why actually Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  186. is perhaps the most important chapter

  187. in the Bible.

  188. Certainly plot wise.

  189. Because if you take Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  190. out of the Bible,

  191. nothing after it makes any sense.

  192. You see,

  193. Genesis chapter 3 explains

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  194. why the world that we live

  195. and work in today

  196. is not the one

  197. that God made.

  198. It's not that there's nothing good

  199. about the world now,

  200. but something went terribly wrong.

  201. And Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  202. shows us

  203. that the bit

  204. that went terribly wrong

  205. was us,

  206. was you

  207. and me.

  208. I remember being in Africa,

  209. you probably had this experience

  210. in various places,

  211. you could have it in

  212. parts of Scotland,

  213. but standing on a road

  214. and looking at a magnificent view,

  215. wonderful African sun,

  216. huge African sun,

  217. setting over some pink mountains,

  218. absolutely idyllic

  219. and breathtaking.

  220. But if you turned around

  221. and looked at the other side

  222. of the road,

  223. you saw a slum,

  224. terrible poverty,

  225. children

  226. in rags.

  227. The bit that God had made

  228. in that sense

  229. was wonderful.

  230. The bit that humans had made

  231. was horrible.

  232. contrast between

  233. the good

  234. and the bad,

  235. of course,

  236. runs throughout our world,

  237. doesn't it?

  238. Humans have achieved

  239. amazing things,

  240. quite staggering

  241. what human beings

  242. have been capable of,

  243. of the ingenuity

  244. and creativity

  245. of men and women,

  246. sent a rocket

  247. to the moon,

  248. invented medicines

  249. medicines that have

  250. relieved suffering

  251. and improved

  252. the quality of people's lives.

  253. We have invented

  254. the internet,

  255. the entire information

  256. in the world

  257. in my pocket.

  258. Astonishing.

  259. And yet,

  260. of course,

  261. those very achievements,

  262. those very skills,

  263. that very ingenuity

  264. is simultaneously

  265. turned into

  266. making weapons,

  267. drugs that are addictive

  268. and ruin lives.

  269. The facility

  270. to bring

  271. a tsunami

  272. of pornography

  273. into people's homes,

  274. even their pockets,

  275. potentially.

  276. Bill Bryson,

  277. the American author,

  278. lives in Britain now,

  279. I think.

  280. Not a Christian,

  281. but he wrote a book

  282. called

  283. A Short History

  284. of Nearly Everything

  285. a while ago.

  286. And he says this in it,

  287. he says,

  288. as far as we can tell,

  289. we are the best

  290. there is.

  291. We may be

  292. all there is.

  293. It's an unnerving thought

  294. that we may be

  295. the living universe's

  296. supreme achievement

  297. and its worst nightmare

  298. simultaneously.

  299. And of course,

  300. that problem

  301. runs right through

  302. our hearts.

  303. Every one of us

  304. is a strange mixture.

  305. Sometimes we can be

  306. capable of great acts

  307. of kindness,

  308. bravery,

  309. love for others.

  310. And yet,

  311. on the other hand,

  312. in the blink of an eye,

  313. we can be selfish,

  314. cowardly,

  315. proud,

  316. using others.

  317. See this in so many ways,

  318. don't we?

  319. The loving father,

  320. protective of his family,

  321. addicted to pornography.

  322. The loyal,

  323. considerate friends,

  324. meanly gossiping

  325. about a colleague.

  326. Somebody who gives

  327. generously to charity,

  328. but will lie about

  329. their taxes.

  330. Humanity is like,

  331. as somebody has put it,

  332. a ruined grandeur,

  333. a ruined castle.

  334. Have you ever been to

  335. an old ruined castle

  336. and you look at it

  337. and if you squint,

  338. you can imagine

  339. what it was like

  340. when it was first built.

  341. You can imagine

  342. when the towers were complete

  343. and the ramparts

  344. were intact

  345. and just how magnificent

  346. and great

  347. and wonderful

  348. and impressive it was.

  349. But actually now,

  350. it's broken down.

  351. It's scarred,

  352. it's dirty

  353. and there's weeds

  354. sprouting out

  355. of it everywhere.

  356. The account of humanity's fall

  357. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  358. has a number of

  359. mysterious elements in it.

  360. We're not told

  361. where the serpent,

  362. the tempter,

  363. the snake comes from.

  364. We're not told

  365. where evil originated

  366. or why God allowed it

  367. into Eden.

  368. And yet the facts

  369. and lessons are clear

  370. regarding this world-changing

  371. encounter.

  372. That's why we read

  373. from Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2:15–17

  374. verses 15 to 17.

  375. Do you notice there

  376. that God did two things

  377. when he places man

  378. in the garden?

  379. Firstly,

  380. he gives Adam

  381. instructions

  382. about his purpose.

  383. If you like,

  384. he gives Adam

  385. instructions

  386. about his vocational

  387. responsibilities.

  388. That he is there

  389. to work.

  390. You notice that?

  391. God took the man

  392. and put him in the garden

  393. to work it

  394. and to take care of it.

  395. Humanity's vocation

  396. is to steward

  397. and to manage

  398. and to care for

  399. and to oversee creation.

  400. But he also

  401. gives Adam

  402. instructions,

  403. even he does that,

  404. about right and wrong,

  405. about his moral

  406. responsibility.

  407. And that is

  408. to obey God.

  409. You are free

  410. to eat from any tree

  411. in the garden,

  412. but you must not eat

  413. from the tree

  414. of the knowledge

  415. of good and evil,

  416. for when you eat from it,

  417. you will certainly

  418. die.

  419. You see,

  420. just as man

  421. was dependent

  422. on God

  423. for his purpose

  424. in the world,

  425. what he was there for,

  426. he was to be

  427. dependent on God

  428. for his understanding

  429. of right and wrong.

  430. Now, of course,

  431. many today object

  432. to that,

  433. don't they?

  434. That second part,

  435. especially,

  436. they can be very

  437. offended and prickly

  438. by the suggestion

  439. that God

  440. or religion

  441. is somehow

  442. necessary

  443. in order

  444. for people

  445. to live morally

  446. good lives.

  447. But the fact

  448. remains

  449. that once

  450. you remove

  451. God

  452. as your moral

  453. guide,

  454. you're ultimately

  455. making up

  456. your own rules.

  457. And we know

  458. from experience

  459. that it won't be

  460. long before

  461. those rules

  462. start to get bent

  463. out of selfish

  464. self-interest.

  465. It's inevitable.

  466. And it is

  467. what we see.

  468. So Adam

  469. has commanded

  470. not to eat

  471. of the tree

  472. of knowledge.

  473. Again,

  474. the tree of knowledge

  475. is a mysterious

  476. thing,

  477. but I don't think

  478. it was magical.

  479. I don't think

  480. there was some

  481. kind of Walt

  482. Disney-esque

  483. magic potion

  484. in the fruits,

  485. not Snow White

  486. here.

  487. I think that

  488. it was there

  489. to teach

  490. humanity

  491. about the need

  492. right at the

  493. start of creation,

  494. the need to

  495. trust God

  496. and to

  497. obey God.

  498. that is,

  499. good

  500. was not

  501. to eat

  502. of it,

  503. that is,

  504. to obey

  505. God,

  506. whereas evil

  507. would be to

  508. eat of it,

  509. that is,

  510. to disobey

  511. God.

  512. One writer

  513. puts it like

  514. this,

  515. Colin Adams,

  516. in his book

  517. Unlocking the

  518. Bible Story,

  519. he says,

  520. when God

  521. told Adam

  522. that he must

  523. not eat

  524. from the tree

  525. of the knowledge

  526. of good and

  527. evil,

  528. it was as

  529. if he said,

  530. Adam,

  531. you need

  532. to understand

  533. that there

  534. is a terrible

  535. reality in

  536. the universe

  537. and I want

  538. to protect

  539. you from

  540. it.

  541. It's called

  542. evil.

  543. You do not

  544. know anything

  545. about it,

  546. but it already

  547. exists.

  548. I do not

  549. want you ever

  550. to experience

  551. it,

  552. so whatever

  553. you do,

  554. trust me

  555. and do

  556. what I

  557. tell you.

  558. So what

  559. on earth

  560. caused

  561. Adam and

  562. Eve to

  563. distrust

  564. God

  565. and to

  566. reject

  567. that very

  568. simple,

  569. that very

  570. basic,

  571. that very

  572. reasonable

  573. commandment.

  574. Well,

  575. there's lots

  576. written on

  577. this,

  578. you'll be

  579. familiar with

  580. this,

  581. I'm sure,

  582. so I'll

  583. spend very

  584. little time,

  585. but three

  586. causes are

  587. very evident

  588. here,

  589. three causes

  590. that are

  591. always at

  592. play,

  593. then and

  594. today in

  595. our own

  596. lives,

  597. whenever we

  598. turn from

  599. God,

  600. whenever we

  601. make the

  602. same kind

  603. of decision

  604. as we

  605. do

  606. continually,

  607. if we're

  608. honest,

  609. to do

  610. our own

  611. thing,

  612. rather than

  613. God's,

  614. to prefer

  615. our own

  616. way to

  617. the one

  618. that God

  619. has shown

  620. us.

  621. So firstly,

  622. of course,

  623. we have

  624. misrepresentation,

  625. don't we?

  626. Satan's

  627. tactic,

  628. the snake,

  629. the tempter,

  630. is to create

  631. confusion about

  632. what God

  633. has said.

  634. If the

  635. key to

  636. bringing down

  637. humanity is

  638. to get

  639. them to

  640. distrust

  641. God,

  642. then let's

  643. misrepresent

  644. what God

  645. has actually

  646. said and

  647. his motives

  648. for saying

  649. it.

  650. Notice

  651. here in

  652. verse 2,

  653. verse 1

  654. rather,

  655. said to

  656. the woman,

  657. did God

  658. really say

  659. you must

  660. not eat

  661. from any

  662. tree in

  663. the garden?

  664. He poses

  665. a question,

  666. but like a

  667. lot of

  668. questions,

  669. it's loaded

  670. question,

  671. isn't it?

  672. it's driving

  673. a certain

  674. answer?

  675. It's

  676. exaggeration.

  677. God

  678. hasn't

  679. said you

  680. can't

  681. eat

  682. from any

  683. tree in

  684. the garden.

  685. Then he

  686. falls into

  687. the trap

  688. in verse

  689. 3,

  690. talking about

  691. how we

  692. were not

  693. to touch

  694. it.

  695. But

  696. actually,

  697. touching

  698. was not

  699. mentioned

  700. in chapter

  701. 2.

  702. It's all

  703. misrepresentation,

  704. it's all

  705. an attempt,

  706. an agenda

  707. here to

  708. present God

  709. as being

  710. draconian,

  711. unreasonable,

  712. excessive.

  713. God is

  714. out to

  715. spoil your

  716. fun.

  717. Christianity

  718. is dull

  719. and boring,

  720. God is

  721. frankly just

  722. mean.

  723. But actually

  724. of course,

  725. God made

  726. all the

  727. good and

  728. fun stuff

  729. in the

  730. universe.

  731. He made

  732. a world

  733. that was

  734. packed with

  735. delights,

  736. that is

  737. packed with

  738. delights.

  739. C.S.

  740. Lewis puts

  741. it,

  742. the devil

  743. never invented

  744. any pleasure.

  745. He just

  746. misuses the

  747. ones that

  748. God

  749. created.

  750. My wife

  751. was given

  752. an ornament,

  753. a kind of

  754. figurine a

  755. number of

  756. years ago

  757. by an

  758. aunt,

  759. which passed

  760. away and

  761. it was left

  762. to her.

  763. So it had

  764. kind of

  765. sentimental

  766. value,

  767. but I

  768. think it

  769. was probably

  770. quite a

  771. valuable

  772. ornament in

  773. its own

  774. right.

  775. and we

  776. told the

  777. kids they

  778. weren't

  779. allowed to

  780. touch it.

  781. We had

  782. three kids

  783. younger at

  784. that stage

  785. that said,

  786. don't touch

  787. this ornament,

  788. it's precious

  789. for various

  790. reasons.

  791. And they've

  792. got a room

  793. full of

  794. toys,

  795. if your

  796. kids are

  797. similar,

  798. a shed

  799. load of

  800. toys,

  801. ridiculous

  802. number of

  803. toys,

  804. the bottom

  805. three feet

  806. of their

  807. bed is

  808. soft toys

  809. and they've

  810. got all

  811. these things

  812. falling out

  813. of their

  814. cupboards

  815. that they

  816. never

  817. interested in.

  818. But they

  819. so wanted

  820. to get their

  821. hands in

  822. that ornament

  823. and they

  824. were so

  825. indignant

  826. they weren't

  827. allowed to.

  828. craving for

  829. it.

  830. And it was

  831. ridiculous,

  832. you've got a

  833. room full

  834. of toys and

  835. you want

  836. this one

  837. thing.

  838. It's very

  839. humorous,

  840. isn't it?

  841. Pretty strange

  842. really,

  843. but it's

  844. very human.

  845. It's very

  846. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  847. chapter 3.

  848. So Satan

  849. wants to

  850. misrepresent

  851. God.

  852. Secondly,

  853. he wants to

  854. sow seeds

  855. of doubt.

  856. Verse 4,

  857. his second

  858. tactic is just

  859. to challenge

  860. God's word

  861. head on.

  862. You won't

  863. surely die.

  864. Don't worry,

  865. it's not

  866. going to be

  867. that big a

  868. deal.

  869. In fact,

  870. God is,

  871. God's word

  872. continues to

  873. be attacked

  874. in this way,

  875. doesn't it?

  876. God

  877. didn't really

  878. mean.

  879. A warning

  880. to us,

  881. isn't it?

  882. Just to be

  883. aware of

  884. those in

  885. the church

  886. and without

  887. whose message,

  888. whose ambition,

  889. whose ministry

  890. it seems to be

  891. just to cast

  892. doubt on the

  893. Bible.

  894. They look at

  895. things that

  896. seem to you

  897. and me to

  898. be fairly

  899. plain and

  900. clear and

  901. straightforward

  902. and they

  903. just question

  904. it and

  905. question it

  906. and question

  907. it and

  908. question it.

  909. Then you

  910. say,

  911. why are you

  912. questioning it?

  913. I'm just

  914. asking questions.

  915. But of course

  916. there's an

  917. agenda there,

  918. isn't there?

  919. There's an

  920. agenda of

  921. attrition

  922. to cast

  923. doubt on

  924. God's words.

  925. We need to

  926. push on.

  927. And then

  928. there's ambition,

  929. isn't there?

  930. Verse 5,

  931. God is just

  932. trying to

  933. suppress you

  934. and keep

  935. you down.

  936. He knows

  937. that in the

  938. day that you

  939. take this

  940. fruit,

  941. you'll be

  942. like him,

  943. you'll be

  944. like God,

  945. you'll know

  946. good and

  947. evil.

  948. Trying to

  949. stop you

  950. reaching your

  951. full potential,

  952. you too

  953. could be

  954. God.

  955. It just

  956. is Philip

  957. Pullman,

  958. isn't it?

  959. See,

  960. he's got

  961. his latest

  962. books out

  963. after his

  964. previous

  965. dark trilogy.

  966. Philip

  967. Pullman's

  968. basic thesis

  969. is that the

  970. fall was an

  971. upward fall.

  972. When Adam

  973. and Eve

  974. rebelled,

  975. that was a

  976. wonderful

  977. breakthrough

  978. moment.

  979. That was

  980. getting rid

  981. of God,

  982. getting rid

  983. of oppression

  984. and finding

  985. fulfillment

  986. and coming

  987. of age.

  988. Don't be

  989. held back

  990. by God.

  991. This is the

  992. way to be

  993. fulfilled.

  994. This is the

  995. way to

  996. get the

  997. most out

  998. of life.

  999. But of

  1000. course,

  1001. having ignored

  1002. God's

  1003. warnings,

  1004. having

  1005. disobeyed

  1006. God's

  1007. commands,

  1008. the result

  1009. for Adam

  1010. and Eve

  1011. and for

  1012. all of

  1013. humanity

  1014. that would

  1015. follow

  1016. was not

  1017. a great

  1018. liberation,

  1019. was not

  1020. a new

  1021. and exciting

  1022. life,

  1023. but actually

  1024. a world

  1025. that quickly

  1026. turned

  1027. sour.

  1028. the

  1029. consequences

  1030. then,

  1031. verses

  1032. 7 to

  1033. 19,

  1034. we won't

  1035. go into

  1036. these in

  1037. great detail,

  1038. we don't

  1039. have the

  1040. time,

  1041. but they

  1042. are immediate

  1043. and dramatic,

  1044. aren't they?

  1045. Where they

  1046. had life,

  1047. verse 19,

  1048. they will

  1049. now face

  1050. death.

  1051. Where they

  1052. had pleasure,

  1053. they will

  1054. now face

  1055. pain,

  1056. verse 16.

  1057. Where they

  1058. had abundance,

  1059. verse 17,

  1060. they will now

  1061. have toil.

  1062. Work itself

  1063. will be

  1064. subject to

  1065. frustration.

  1066. Work that

  1067. should have

  1068. been fulfilling

  1069. and invigorating

  1070. and energizing

  1071. and delightful

  1072. will often

  1073. now be

  1074. hard and

  1075. boring and

  1076. monotonous and

  1077. difficult

  1078. and wearing.

  1079. where they

  1080. had harmony

  1081. in relationships,

  1082. verse 16,

  1083. they will

  1084. now have

  1085. conflict.

  1086. Where they

  1087. had fellowship

  1088. with God,

  1089. they will

  1090. now have

  1091. separation.

  1092. And notice

  1093. how as we

  1094. read through

  1095. these decrees

  1096. of God

  1097. and how

  1098. the rebellion

  1099. of humanity,

  1100. how the

  1101. consequences of

  1102. sin would

  1103. affect life,

  1104. would affect

  1105. Adam and

  1106. Eve and

  1107. the world

  1108. they lived

  1109. in.

  1110. Notice how

  1111. the very

  1112. fabric of

  1113. creation itself

  1114. is damaged

  1115. by this

  1116. rebellion.

  1117. So that

  1118. sin's

  1119. consequences

  1120. go beyond

  1121. just humanity,

  1122. they actually

  1123. distort everything.

  1124. You see,

  1125. humanity was

  1126. created back

  1127. in Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1128. chapter 1

  1129. as the

  1130. representative

  1131. head of

  1132. creation,

  1133. the apex

  1134. to rule

  1135. creation

  1136. under God.

  1137. They had a

  1138. distinct and

  1139. unique role

  1140. among everything

  1141. that was

  1142. created.

  1143. God breathed

  1144. his very

  1145. spirit into

  1146. them.

  1147. And that

  1148. meant that

  1149. the fate

  1150. and condition

  1151. of the

  1152. universe

  1153. was always

  1154. going to be

  1155. tied to the

  1156. fate and

  1157. condition of

  1158. humanity.

  1159. Which meant

  1160. that when Adam

  1161. and Eve

  1162. became

  1163. dislocated

  1164. from God,

  1165. the whole

  1166. of creation

  1167. was put

  1168. out of

  1169. joint.

  1170. Weeds,

  1171. droughts,

  1172. tsunamis

  1173. are all

  1174. indicative

  1175. of that.

  1176. That's a

  1177. reality which

  1178. is picked

  1179. up later

  1180. in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1181. chapter 8

  1182. in the

  1183. New Testament

  1184. when Paul

  1185. writes,

  1186. for the

  1187. creation

  1188. waits in

  1189. eager

  1190. expectation

  1191. for the

  1192. children of

  1193. God to

  1194. be revealed.

  1195. For the

  1196. creation was

  1197. subjected to

  1198. frustration,

  1199. not by its

  1200. own choice

  1201. but by the

  1202. will of the

  1203. one who

  1204. subjected it

  1205. in hope

  1206. that creation

  1207. itself will

  1208. be liberated

  1209. from its

  1210. bondage to

  1211. decay and

  1212. brought into

  1213. the freedom

  1214. and glory of

  1215. the children

  1216. of God.

  1217. See what

  1218. Paul's saying

  1219. there?

  1220. He's saying

  1221. that the

  1222. whole of

  1223. creation,

  1224. the very

  1225. fabric of

  1226. creation,

  1227. the very

  1228. structures of

  1229. nature itself

  1230. have been

  1231. brought into

  1232. frustration

  1233. because of

  1234. the rebellion

  1235. of humanity

  1236. but it will

  1237. be the

  1238. liberation of

  1239. humanity,

  1240. it will be

  1241. the revelation

  1242. of the sons

  1243. and daughters

  1244. of the living

  1245. God that

  1246. will be the

  1247. liberation

  1248. ultimately

  1249. of creation.

  1250. Creation

  1251. will only be

  1252. restored and

  1253. healed when

  1254. humanity

  1255. is restored

  1256. and healed.

  1257. Now that

  1258. doesn't mean

  1259. that we

  1260. shouldn't

  1261. bother being

  1262. good stewards

  1263. of creation.

  1264. Recycling

  1265. is good,

  1266. let me commend

  1267. it to you.

  1268. But of course

  1269. it means that

  1270. the world's

  1271. ultimate hope

  1272. and salvation

  1273. is not in

  1274. environmentalism,

  1275. as useful

  1276. and as worthy

  1277. as that is,

  1278. but actually

  1279. an evangelism

  1280. and men

  1281. and women

  1282. getting right

  1283. with God.

  1284. things cannot

  1285. continue as

  1286. they had

  1287. done.

  1288. God will

  1289. keep his

  1290. words,

  1291. the word

  1292. that he

  1293. gave in

  1294. chapter 2

  1295. that if

  1296. they rebelled

  1297. against him,

  1298. if they did

  1299. not obey,

  1300. they would

  1301. die and

  1302. God will

  1303. keep his

  1304. words.

  1305. The fact

  1306. is that

  1307. relationship

  1308. with God

  1309. and consequently

  1310. peace in

  1311. this world

  1312. were always

  1313. dependent upon

  1314. trusting God

  1315. and acknowledging

  1316. his good

  1317. rule.

  1318. And the

  1319. consequences

  1320. of the fall,

  1321. the consequences

  1322. for work

  1323. and for every

  1324. aspect of

  1325. our life

  1326. that come

  1327. in in

  1328. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1329. chapter 3

  1330. and those

  1331. verses from

  1332. verse 14

  1333. onwards

  1334. are not the

  1335. spiteful

  1336. revenge of

  1337. a slighted

  1338. God.

  1339. It wasn't

  1340. God taking

  1341. the huff

  1342. and saying,

  1343. well if you

  1344. rejected me,

  1345. just you

  1346. wait.

  1347. I'll get

  1348. my own

  1349. back.

  1350. But those

  1351. consequences

  1352. were inevitable.

  1353. You see,

  1354. the world

  1355. can only

  1356. work well

  1357. when it

  1358. is in

  1359. step with

  1360. its maker

  1361. and its

  1362. sustainer.

  1363. It's like

  1364. removing the

  1365. firewall from

  1366. your laptop

  1367. and then

  1368. complaining that

  1369. the programs

  1370. have become

  1371. corrupted.

  1372. This

  1373. self-declaration

  1374. of independence

  1375. from God

  1376. could only

  1377. ever be a

  1378. disaster.

  1379. And of

  1380. course it

  1381. is the

  1382. cause of

  1383. everything

  1384. that damages

  1385. and spoils

  1386. our world

  1387. today.

  1388. Every

  1389. asylum,

  1390. every

  1391. hospital,

  1392. every

  1393. prison,

  1394. every

  1395. refugee

  1396. camp,

  1397. every

  1398. police

  1399. station,

  1400. every

  1401. slum,

  1402. every

  1403. employment

  1404. tribunal,

  1405. every

  1406. sexual

  1407. harassment

  1408. claim.

  1409. And within

  1410. a generation,

  1411. chapter 4,

  1412. you have the

  1413. first grave.

  1414. And then in

  1415. chapter 5,

  1416. you have a

  1417. cemetery.

  1418. A world

  1419. which is now

  1420. full of

  1421. alienation,

  1422. distrust,

  1423. conflict,

  1424. and death.

  1425. Well,

  1426. where does this

  1427. leave us?

  1428. Where did it

  1429. leave Adam

  1430. and Eve

  1431. and where

  1432. does it

  1433. leave us?

  1434. Well,

  1435. Adam and

  1436. Eve left

  1437. them hiding,

  1438. running from

  1439. God,

  1440. hoping,

  1441. it's bizarre

  1442. isn't it,

  1443. that God

  1444. would just

  1445. kind of go

  1446. away,

  1447. that he

  1448. might forget

  1449. about them,

  1450. that he

  1451. might not

  1452. have an

  1453. interest in

  1454. what had

  1455. happened.

  1456. And yet,

  1457. so many

  1458. people live

  1459. life like

  1460. that today,

  1461. don't they?

  1462. Have their

  1463. head in the

  1464. sand when it

  1465. comes to

  1466. God,

  1467. hoping that

  1468. perhaps they'll

  1469. be able to

  1470. make good

  1471. with some

  1472. metaphorical

  1473. fig leaves of

  1474. good works

  1475. or a bit

  1476. of religion.

  1477. People who

  1478. are now

  1479. detached from

  1480. any

  1481. great

  1482. purpose,

  1483. whether

  1484. vacationally

  1485. or morally,

  1486. hoping that

  1487. things will

  1488. just work

  1489. out okay,

  1490. that God

  1491. will leave

  1492. them alone.

  1493. But of

  1494. course,

  1495. God won't

  1496. go away.

  1497. This is

  1498. his world

  1499. and you

  1500. and I,

  1501. as Adam

  1502. and Eve,

  1503. are responsible.

  1504. We're

  1505. accountable.

  1506. And God

  1507. will ask the

  1508. same question

  1509. of every one

  1510. of us that

  1511. he asked

  1512. of Eve.

  1513. What is

  1514. this that

  1515. you have

  1516. done?

  1517. And yet

  1518. in the

  1519. middle of

  1520. this

  1521. judgment,

  1522. this fear,

  1523. the guilt,

  1524. the alienation,

  1525. there is

  1526. incredible

  1527. mercy,

  1528. isn't there?

  1529. Even here,

  1530. even in the

  1531. darkest of

  1532. all the

  1533. chapters of

  1534. the Bible,

  1535. God

  1536. shows his

  1537. mercy,

  1538. firstly,

  1539. in barring

  1540. the way

  1541. to the

  1542. tree of

  1543. life.

  1544. We see

  1545. enough evil,

  1546. don't we,

  1547. in the

  1548. years that

  1549. we have.

  1550. imagine

  1551. if Stalin

  1552. was still

  1553. alive today.

  1554. Imagine

  1555. if he

  1556. just lived

  1557. on and

  1558. on and

  1559. on.

  1560. Nobody

  1561. wants that.

  1562. There's

  1563. mercy in

  1564. the provision

  1565. of clothing.

  1566. God

  1567. giving

  1568. practical

  1569. care,

  1570. even in

  1571. the face

  1572. of people

  1573. that have

  1574. snubbed

  1575. him.

  1576. Continues

  1577. to care

  1578. and to

  1579. send the

  1580. rain and

  1581. the sunshine

  1582. on the

  1583. righteous

  1584. and the

  1585. wicked

  1586. even today.

  1587. But of

  1588. course the

  1589. greatest

  1590. mercy in

  1591. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1592. chapter 3

  1593. is that

  1594. despite all

  1595. this,

  1596. hope is

  1597. not lost,

  1598. that

  1599. restoration

  1600. is a

  1601. possibility,

  1602. that

  1603. paradise

  1604. can be

  1605. regained,

  1606. that intimacy

  1607. with God

  1608. could be

  1609. restored.

  1610. The promise

  1611. is just a

  1612. glimmer of

  1613. course,

  1614. we could

  1615. easily miss

  1616. it on

  1617. the first

  1618. reading,

  1619. but it's

  1620. there in

  1621. verse 15,

  1622. isn't it?

  1623. The seed

  1624. of the

  1625. woman will

  1626. crush the

  1627. tempter's

  1628. head,

  1629. that from

  1630. this

  1631. humanity

  1632. one would

  1633. arise who

  1634. would overturn

  1635. the fall,

  1636. who would

  1637. overcome

  1638. death,

  1639. the devil

  1640. and sin,

  1641. but who

  1642. would be

  1643. wounded even

  1644. as he

  1645. did so.

  1646. And the

  1647. hope of

  1648. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1649. chapter 3

  1650. of course

  1651. is the

  1652. hope and

  1653. the story

  1654. of the

  1655. rest of

  1656. the Bible.

  1657. And the

  1658. glimmering

  1659. promise in

  1660. the ruins

  1661. of Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1662. chapter 3,

  1663. even as

  1664. humanity

  1665. is driven

  1666. out the

  1667. garden,

  1668. even as

  1669. that way

  1670. of life

  1671. is cut

  1672. off by

  1673. the angel

  1674. and the

  1675. flashing

  1676. sword,

  1677. is that

  1678. there can

  1679. be a

  1680. way back,

  1681. but that

  1682. the sword

  1683. would need

  1684. to be

  1685. dealt

  1686. with.

  1687. And the

  1688. way back

  1689. to God,

  1690. we could

  1691. stop there,

  1692. you know

  1693. the rest,

  1694. don't you?

  1695. You can put

  1696. two and

  1697. two together,

  1698. but for the

  1699. avoidance of

  1700. any doubt,

  1701. the way back

  1702. to God,

  1703. of course,

  1704. that one who

  1705. was going

  1706. to arise

  1707. was the

  1708. Lord Jesus

  1709. Christ,

  1710. born of

  1711. a woman,

  1712. the one

  1713. who would

  1714. destroy the

  1715. works of

  1716. the devil,

  1717. the one

  1718. who would

  1719. bear God's

  1720. punishment for

  1721. sin,

  1722. that we

  1723. might be

  1724. forgiven,

  1725. the one

  1726. who would

  1727. give life

  1728. to those

  1729. under the

  1730. sentence of

  1731. death.

  1732. A world

  1733. renewed,

  1734. and a world

  1735. that we can

  1736. look forward

  1737. to that will

  1738. be recreated,

  1739. a humanity

  1740. that will be

  1741. recreated,

  1742. even as men

  1743. and women are

  1744. born again in

  1745. the spirit,

  1746. and look

  1747. forward to

  1748. that day

  1749. of resurrection,

  1750. and a world

  1751. that will be

  1752. free from

  1753. frustration,

  1754. a world

  1755. where work

  1756. itself won't

  1757. be subject

  1758. to frustration

  1759. and difficulty

  1760. and boredom

  1761. and hassle,

  1762. but actually

  1763. will once again

  1764. be enriching

  1765. and joyful

  1766. and fulfilling

  1767. and glorious

  1768. to the glory

  1769. of God.

  1770. And may God

  1771. bless these

  1772. thoughts.

  1773. from his

  1774. words.

  1775. Amen.
