  1. Thank you everyone, thanks very much to Fiona and the band for leading us so well in our worship.

  2. As Fiona said, we're continuing our series on work this evening,

  3. and it's maybe worth beginning by reminding ourselves what we mean when we talk about work.

  4. Work for me has always been in office, I spend most of my life doing pensions,

  5. and I've spent my time doing church management, whatever that means, in the office through the back.

  6. And that is my environment, and what I talk about this evening will be based on that,

  7. and based on my experience of it.

  8. That probably translates reasonably easily to those of you who work in a hospital or a school or even in a church.

  9. But in a way, that is not everybody here.

  10. And work for you could be at university or college.

  11. It could be volunteering that you do in various ways.

  12. It could be at home if you're a homemaker looking after family.

  13. I hope a lot of what we have to say will also be relevant for you.

  14. So whatever work means to you, whatever you do to contribute towards society or towards the good of others,

  15. please think of that this evening, and hopefully a lot of what we say will be of help.

  16. We're going to refer to quite a number of pastors as we go through this evening,

  17. but I want to read to begin with from Ephesians chapter 6, and it will come up on the screen.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  18. There's a few verses from Ephesians 6.

  19. This is talking about slaves and masters, which is obviously a slightly different environment from what most of us are in,

  20. but it translates reasonably well to the world of work today as well.

  21. So it's Ephesians chapter 6, and reading from verse 5.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  22. And Paul writes,

  23. I'm sure God will bless his word as we consider it together.

  24. I want to start by thinking about a house with two rooms.

  25. It might look a bit like that, might not, but the key thing is it's got two rooms.

  26. And if we move on to the next slide, we can see what the rooms are.

  27. The rooms are called faith and work.

  28. And as you can see in that picture, it's two separate rooms.

  29. And there are lots of different ways in which people might look at these rooms.

  30. Some people are very comfortable in the room of faith.

  31. They find they come to church and have fellowship with other Christians.

  32. That gives them a great joy as they worship God and enjoy him together.

  33. There's the security that comes from knowing that our eternal future is secure and that we're in God's hands.

  34. And churches are places where, by and large, there is great love and concern and support for one another.

  35. And many people are very comfortable in the world of faith, as we would look at it as being among Christians, perhaps in church.

  36. But some people who find that real comfort and joy and security and love and faith,

  37. they have a very different experience and attitude towards work.

  38. Work for them might be a place where there's tedium, where it's not very exciting.

  39. They're doing things that are repetitive and they really don't enjoy it very much.

  40. It might be a place where there's stress, where there is constant pressure on them to produce more or to do things differently,

  41. and they find that really difficult.

  42. And perhaps even there's hostility towards them as Christians.

  43. If they're trying to live for the Lord Jesus, there are those who just don't understand or don't want to understand

  44. and are actively hostile to them.

  45. And to someone who has that feeling, these feelings about faith and work,

  46. work becomes something that you have to do because you need to earn a living,

  47. but it's not anything that has any joy to it,

  48. and it really isn't something that they would associate as being connected with their faith.

  49. Work is something that's a chore, that is difficult, that they go to out of necessity,

  50. but they'll come back as quickly as they can to the security of their faith and to life in church.

  51. So that's one potential way of looking at it.

  52. Second group of people, in some ways, are the opposite.

  53. A lot of people find that work is a really good place to be.

  54. They have jobs that they enjoy and they like being in them.

  55. So they get some fulfillment out of what they do.

  56. All of us, if we're working, if we're employment,

  57. hopefully what we do is some kind of purpose,

  58. and if we fulfill that purpose, then there should be fulfillment for us as well.

  59. For some people, work means status.

  60. Having a bit of importance, perhaps particularly if you're in a fairly senior position,

  61. and the status is important to them.

  62. And some people really enjoy the company of work.

  63. Being among people who are from different backgrounds, different environments,

  64. a bit of banter going on that maybe you don't get so much in a church environment,

  65. and it's something they really enjoy.

  66. For when work is somewhere where they're really quite comfortable.

  67. And perhaps for them, faith, church, whatever you want to think of it as,

  68. is almost the opposite.

  69. They feel that their life as a Christian is a bit of a duty.

  70. I should go to church on Sundays.

  71. I should get involved in things.

  72. But it's not something that gives them great joy,

  73. and something they really want to do.

  74. Perhaps they find that faith is demanding.

  75. They're being told lots of things that they should do,

  76. and they find that difficult.

  77. And maybe they even question the relevance of what happens on Sunday

  78. to what happens the rest of the week.

  79. They're quite comfortable with what they do at work.

  80. It's something they feel is suitable for them,

  81. but they don't see the relevance of faith to that.

  82. One final group.

  83. And this group of people you might look at and say,

  84. well, they've got the best of both worlds.

  85. They enjoy faith, they enjoy church and being part of it,

  86. and they also enjoy work.

  87. So both of them are places where they are comfortable.

  88. But there's a wall between them.

  89. They're separate rooms.

  90. So they come to church on a Sunday,

  91. and they enjoy the worship,

  92. and they enjoy the fellowship,

  93. and the teaching.

  94. And then they go to work on a Monday,

  95. and they enjoy doing that,

  96. and whatever they're involved in.

  97. But they really don't link the two together.

  98. They are living effectively two separate lives.

  99. Both good, both fulfilling,

  100. but largely separate.

  101. I guess that's where it becomes relevant as we ask,

  102. who are we working for?

  103. When we go into the world of work,

  104. what is it we're trying to achieve?

  105. What is our ambition?

  106. That was the other kind of subheading

  107. for this evening,

  108. work's ambition.

  109. What is our ambition?

  110. What relevance does our Christian faith have to our work?

  111. I want to try to answer the question,

  112. who are we working for,

  113. with four separate answers.

  114. And I think they're all true.

  115. Now, you'll be waiting for the last one,

  116. which will be quite predictable,

  117. but let's not lose focus

  118. as we look at the other ones as well.

  119. Who am I working for?

  120. And the answer, first of all,

  121. is I am working to some extent for myself.

  122. And that sounds very selfish,

  123. so let's talk a little bit more about it.

  124. Paul writes to the Thessalonians,

  125. he says,

  126. the one who is unwilling to work

  127. shall not eat.

  128. So work is very much about breadwinning.

  129. Not everyone's able to work.

  130. Not everyone can get a job.

  131. And they're hopefully reasonably well provided for

  132. by the state, not always.

  133. But for many people,

  134. going to work,

  135. one of the key things for it

  136. is that we can have enough

  137. for ourselves to live on,

  138. and usually quite a bit more as well.

  139. So going to work is about breadwinning.

  140. It's about getting the wages

  141. that come at the end of the week

  142. or the month or the fees

  143. or whatever it is that we get from work.

  144. And that is important.

  145. We work so that we can earn a living,

  146. so that we can look after ourselves.

  147. Something that I suggest

  148. is that work is about fulfillment for ourselves.

  149. God doesn't intend that our work

  150. should be all tedium

  151. and something that we dread.

  152. Now we thought a couple of weeks ago

  153. about the fall.

  154. And yes, as a result of the fall,

  155. many aspects of work

  156. aren't what we might ideally want.

  157. But God wants us,

  158. through what we do,

  159. to get a sense of fulfillment

  160. and to bring about the fulfillment

  161. of our gifts,

  162. our abilities in the workplace.

  163. I put Nehemiah 3 to 6 up there

  164. as a reference.

  165. We've been looking at Nehemiah

  166. in the staff team

  167. over the last month or two.

  168. And it's a great example of work,

  169. of the people building,

  170. rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.

  171. And you get the list

  172. in Nehemiah 3

  173. of all the different groups of people

  174. and all the things that they did

  175. to build the wall.

  176. One of the key things there

  177. is they tended to be building

  178. near where they lived.

  179. So the building they did

  180. had a real benefit to them personally.

  181. You then have the account

  182. of all those who would come out

  183. and would try to destroy the work

  184. and to do away what Nehemiah

  185. was trying to build

  186. and the people were trying to build.

  187. But then in chapter 6,

  188. it says they finished the wall.

  189. They built it right around

  190. the city of Jerusalem again.

  191. It was restored to what it should be.

  192. And you can think that people then

  193. must have a real sense of fulfillment,

  194. of achievement,

  195. of having done something

  196. that was really worthwhile.

  197. And for many of us,

  198. when we go to work,

  199. there is the opportunity

  200. to do something

  201. that is really worthwhile.

  202. It makes a difference to others

  203. and we can come away thinking,

  204. what I've done

  205. has been God working through me

  206. to fulfill his will in me.

  207. And it helps us with our self-esteem

  208. and our understanding

  209. of how we can serve God

  210. and live for him.

  211. So work can be a place of fulfillment.

  212. And then Paul says in Ephesians

  213. that work also can bring us God's reward.

  214. This is part of the passage we read.

  215. It said,

  216. you know that the Lord will reward

  217. each one of you

  218. for whatever good they do.

  219. So if we are good workers,

  220. if we go into the workplace

  221. and we do what God has planned for us to do,

  222. and we do it well,

  223. and we do it in a way that serves others,

  224. then God will reward that.

  225. God sees us just as much

  226. when we're at work

  227. and what we do there

  228. as when we're in church

  229. and when we're more consciously

  230. serving him.

  231. There is a reward from God

  232. for those who work well.

  233. Now each of my fours,

  234. who am I working for?

  235. I've got kind of one negative,

  236. just something for us to think about

  237. and to ponder on.

  238. And one of the great dangers

  239. for many of us at work

  240. is what I've called selfish ambition.

  241. In the NIV,

  242. the word ambition appears eight times

  243. in the New Testament.

  244. And on six of these eight occasions,

  245. the word before it is selfish.

  246. People who are doing things

  247. out of selfish ambition

  248. to benefit themselves

  249. and as a consequence,

  250. to do down others.

  251. So is ambition a bad thing?

  252. I would suggest not.

  253. There are two occasions

  254. in the New Testament

  255. when the word ambition

  256. is used positively.

  257. One is about Paul's ambition

  258. to preach the gospel

  259. to those who haven't heard it yet.

  260. And the other is that

  261. our ambition should be

  262. to lead quiet and peaceable lives.

  263. Very striking.

  264. These and the other uses

  265. of the word ambition,

  266. they're to do with relationships

  267. and are dealing with other people.

  268. And so ambition, I think,

  269. is not in itself wrong.

  270. And indeed, I think most of us,

  271. as we set out in life,

  272. as we set out for work,

  273. it's not unrealistic

  274. to have some ambition

  275. in terms of where we get to.

  276. For many of us,

  277. before we start paid work,

  278. we spent a period studying,

  279. perhaps at university or college,

  280. or we've been through

  281. an apprenticeship of some kind,

  282. and we know that we are able

  283. to do more than perhaps we are

  284. as we begin in our workplace.

  285. As we gain experience,

  286. as we gain extra knowledge,

  287. there is an expectation

  288. that we should be able to progress.

  289. And I think that is right and proper.

  290. We're able more,

  291. better to fulfill

  292. what God has planned for us

  293. if we are conscientious workers

  294. and if through that

  295. we are able to make progress.

  296. But there does come a point

  297. for many of us

  298. where we have to say,

  299. well, is my ambition

  300. now good ambition?

  301. Am I only really wanting

  302. more for myself

  303. or am I concerned about others?

  304. And for many people,

  305. I think there's a point

  306. where they have to take that call

  307. and to say,

  308. well, where is my ambition?

  309. Leading me,

  310. what is my ambition for?

  311. Now, I'm not holding myself up

  312. as a great example.

  313. I've made many, many mistakes

  314. over my career,

  315. but let me talk a little bit

  316. about how my career went.

  317. I started off,

  318. I trained as an actuary,

  319. and when I qualified an actuary,

  320. I happened to have a list

  321. of all the actuaries

  322. who work in my office,

  323. and I looked at that

  324. and the level each of them was at,

  325. and I looked and thought

  326. a reasonable level for me

  327. possibly to get to

  328. would be such and such.

  329. Not chief executive,

  330. not anywhere near chief executive,

  331. but above the basic level,

  332. somewhere where I felt

  333. my gifts,

  334. the abilities that God had given me

  335. could appropriately be used.

  336. And over a period of time,

  337. I wouldn't say deliberately set out

  338. along that

  339. with a determination to get there,

  340. but over a period of time,

  341. I got to broadly the level

  342. that I thought I might

  343. at the beginning.

  344. There was then a decision to be made.

  345. I'd reached a level,

  346. I had a good job,

  347. I had a job that I'd really enjoyed

  348. and that I felt I was reasonably good at,

  349. and the question would then be,

  350. well, what about the next level?

  351. Because that's what people do ask.

  352. People are looking at the next level up.

  353. And for me,

  354. it wasn't right to aim for the next level.

  355. I don't think I would have enjoyed it,

  356. it wouldn't have been just fulfilling for me,

  357. and my motivation for doing it

  358. just wouldn't be right.

  359. I had physically, financially,

  360. all that I needed,

  361. I had a job that was really good for me

  362. and where I could,

  363. I believed,

  364. serve the Lord,

  365. and I didn't believe it would be right

  366. for me to move further.

  367. Let's go forward a few years

  368. and I reached the point

  369. where I thought,

  370. actually,

  371. what I should be doing

  372. is maybe easing back a bit

  373. in terms of my work.

  374. The children were more or less grown up,

  375. and financially,

  376. we didn't need as much

  377. as I might have been earning at that time,

  378. and at that point,

  379. I started reining back

  380. my working life.

  381. Went to work four days a week,

  382. four long days a week,

  383. and then gradually went down

  384. until last year I retired

  385. from secular employment.

  386. And for me,

  387. that was the right way,

  388. I think,

  389. overall to go.

  390. Now,

  391. for others,

  392. it would be different.

  393. Others are capable

  394. of going far further

  395. than I could

  396. in their employment

  397. and using their gifts

  398. at a higher level.

  399. But what I would say

  400. is we need to be,

  401. if we're in the workplace,

  402. if we're thinking about the future,

  403. we need to be realistic

  404. about what it is

  405. that we can sensibly aim for,

  406. and we need to make sure

  407. that our motivation

  408. for doing it is right

  409. and that we're not motivated

  410. by selfish ambition.

  411. We don't just want

  412. to get more money

  413. or more status

  414. or more power.

  415. We want to do what it is

  416. that God has called us to do.

  417. So we need to be careful

  418. about ambition,

  419. but ambition itself,

  420. trying to do the best you can

  421. and to make the biggest contribution

  422. you can,

  423. that in itself

  424. is not wrong.

  425. Let's move on.

  426. Kind of struggle

  427. with what the heading

  428. for the second thing should be.

  429. I've ended up just saying others.

  430. So others is people

  431. who might be affected

  432. by the work that I do.

  433. And three groups

  434. I've come up with in that.

  435. I've called them customers,

  436. colleagues,

  437. and juniors.

  438. Juniors are kind of funny term.

  439. I mean people

  440. who you're responsible for.

  441. People who are junior to you

  442. in whatever organization you are.

  443. And some people

  444. do manage others.

  445. So most of us,

  446. in fact,

  447. all of us,

  448. if we're doing some kind of work,

  449. there are people

  450. who benefit from it.

  451. There are people

  452. who are the end users,

  453. if you like,

  454. of what we do.

  455. And whether it is customers

  456. in the traditional sense,

  457. or it might be patients,

  458. or it might be pupils,

  459. or it might be children,

  460. whatever it is,

  461. there are people

  462. who benefit

  463. from what we do.

  464. And we are working

  465. in a real sense

  466. for them.

  467. We are working

  468. so that we can serve them

  469. and that we can improve

  470. things for them.

  471. The two verses

  472. I put up there

  473. from Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  474. are from quite a long discourse

  475. from Lord Jesus,

  476. particularly looking at

  477. relationships

  478. with others.

  479. Verse 31,

  480. very familiar words,

  481. do to others

  482. as you would have them

  483. do to you.

  484. And then verse 39,

  485. 38 rather,

  486. where the Lord says,

  487. given it will be given

  488. to you,

  489. and what will you receive,

  490. what you would want to receive,

  491. what you should be giving others,

  492. a good measure,

  493. pressed down,

  494. shaken together,

  495. and running over,

  496. will be poured

  497. into your lap.

  498. I think that's a great picture.

  499. A good measure,

  500. pressed down,

  501. shaken together,

  502. and running over.

  503. In other words,

  504. God will give you

  505. abundantly

  506. what it is that you need

  507. and what you want.

  508. And it is the measure

  509. that we give to others

  510. that we will be given.

  511. So,

  512. God's desire for us

  513. is that if we are serving others

  514. in whatever sense

  515. they are customers of us,

  516. we should go the extra mile.

  517. We should be generous

  518. with our time

  519. and with the talents

  520. that God has given us.

  521. And we should seek

  522. to glorify Him

  523. by giving the maximum benefit

  524. to those

  525. who are depending

  526. on us.

  527. Very important

  528. if we're at work

  529. that we recognize

  530. that there are people

  531. who depend on us

  532. and we do our best

  533. we can for them

  534. because that is a way

  535. in which we glorify God.

  536. Then there's our colleagues,

  537. people we work with.

  538. Now,

  539. as I said,

  540. in an office environment.

  541. In an office environment,

  542. you typically have

  543. two kinds of colleagues.

  544. You've got people

  545. who work with you

  546. in your team

  547. and you've got people

  548. who are in the kind

  549. of wider team,

  550. different teams

  551. around the office

  552. who you interact with.

  553. And sometimes

  554. the relationships

  555. within them

  556. are a little bit different.

  557. My company used to do

  558. fairly regular surveys

  559. of staff

  560. and the results

  561. tended to say

  562. that people felt

  563. they worked really well

  564. with the team,

  565. their immediate team,

  566. but less well so

  567. with the wider team

  568. with other departments.

  569. I was struck thinking

  570. of this by the chapters

  571. in Exodus

  572. I put up there.

  573. This was a huge project

  574. for the Israelites

  575. as they were in the desert.

  576. It was building

  577. the tabernacle

  578. and it required

  579. everyone to come together

  580. and to work together

  581. and to use the gifts

  582. that God had given them

  583. for his glory.

  584. And there are some

  585. really special people

  586. in that.

  587. There's a guy

  588. called Bezalel.

  589. Bezalel,

  590. it says in the scripture,

  591. Moses says

  592. that God has filled him

  593. with the spirit of God,

  594. with wisdom,

  595. with understanding,

  596. with knowledge

  597. and with all kinds

  598. of skills.

  599. To make artistic designs

  600. for works in gold,

  601. silver and bronze

  602. and he goes on and on.

  603. And then

  604. at the end of that

  605. he talks about

  606. how he has also

  607. given them the gift

  608. to teach others.

  609. What a great person

  610. to have

  611. as part of

  612. your team.

  613. Someone who really

  614. understands what

  615. they're doing,

  616. they're an expert

  617. in what they're doing

  618. but they're also there

  619. to teach others

  620. and to help

  621. and develop them.

  622. That's the kind

  623. of people

  624. that we want

  625. to be

  626. in our workplace,

  627. whatever it is.

  628. To show real

  629. consideration

  630. and help

  631. for others,

  632. to use the gifts

  633. that God has given us

  634. but also to help

  635. to develop others

  636. and to bring them on.

  637. And you go right

  638. through Exodus

  639. 35 to 39

  640. and you see

  641. so many examples

  642. of people

  643. using the gifts

  644. that God has given them

  645. to produce

  646. this wonderful thing

  647. which would be

  648. the tabernacle

  649. which would be

  650. the centre

  651. of their worship

  652. for many generations.

  653. We need

  654. to have a real

  655. respect and regard

  656. for our colleagues

  657. whoever they may be

  658. and to seek

  659. the best

  660. for them.

  661. And that's not always

  662. the case in offices.

  663. Very easy

  664. to become political

  665. and to trade

  666. one department

  667. off against

  668. another department

  669. and full of

  670. suspicion

  671. and other things.

  672. I'm sure it's not

  673. just offices

  674. but other places

  675. of work

  676. are similar.

  677. That's not how

  678. we should be

  679. as Christians.

  680. We are working

  681. for our colleagues

  682. for their best,

  683. for their good,

  684. for their support.

  685. And then finally

  686. what I've called

  687. juniors,

  688. some might call

  689. them subordinates

  690. or staff,

  691. people who work

  692. for you.

  693. Now some of us

  694. are entrusted

  695. with those

  696. who work under

  697. us,

  698. whom we manage,

  699. some of us

  700. aren't.

  701. But it's quite

  702. striking at the

  703. end of the passage

  704. in Ephesians

  705. that Paul

  706. addresses

  707. masters.

  708. And he says

  709. to them,

  710. treat your slaves

  711. in the same way,

  712. do not threaten

  713. them,

  714. since you know

  715. that he who is

  716. both their master

  717. and yours is in

  718. heaven and there

  719. is no favoritism

  720. with them.

  721. Two key things

  722. for bosses there,

  723. one is don't

  724. threaten,

  725. don't be a bully,

  726. and the second

  727. is don't show

  728. favoritism.

  729. And these,

  730. if any of us

  731. are involved

  732. in looking after

  733. others,

  734. these are very

  735. good principles.

  736. And I'm not

  737. able to go

  738. into great detail

  739. this evening

  740. of what it means

  741. to be a good

  742. boss,

  743. but let's just

  744. recognize if we

  745. are in a position

  746. of managing

  747. others,

  748. that is a position

  749. of responsibility

  750. before God.

  751. We have to have

  752. a real concern

  753. for them

  754. and seek the

  755. best for them

  756. and it needs

  757. particular training

  758. and particular

  759. skills to do

  760. that and to

  761. ensure that

  762. we can please

  763. God in that

  764. work.

  765. So what about

  766. difficulties?

  767. Well I guess

  768. in any of these

  769. groups you will

  770. get some people

  771. who it is really

  772. difficult to get

  773. on with.

  774. Customers who

  775. are awkward

  776. or colleagues

  777. who do engage

  778. in that politicking

  779. and they're trying

  780. to do things

  781. their way and

  782. to do you down

  783. and staff who

  784. are having

  785. difficulties perhaps

  786. in work or

  787. not quite up to

  788. the job or

  789. who are a bit

  790. awkward with you.

  791. And that is

  792. when our

  793. Christian grace

  794. and our

  795. attitudes towards

  796. others can

  797. really be

  798. tested.

  799. We are still

  800. working for

  801. these people

  802. and we should

  803. still be seeking

  804. the best for

  805. them.

  806. And there's no

  807. excuse if we're

  808. in a work

  809. situation for

  810. saying well

  811. that person

  812. is a bit awkward

  813. let's just

  814. ignore them

  815. and do nothing

  816. for them.

  817. They are still

  818. people whom

  819. Christ loved

  820. and whom he

  821. died for

  822. and we

  823. should have

  824. the same

  825. regard and

  826. concern for

  827. them.

  828. But let's

  829. move on.

  830. Our time's

  831. gone quite

  832. quickly.

  833. So let's

  834. move on to

  835. number three.

  836. Number three

  837. is the

  838. boss.

  839. And not all

  840. of us have

  841. a boss but

  842. many of us

  843. do.

  844. The person

  845. who is

  846. responsible for

  847. us.

  848. And of course

  849. in Ephesians

  850. 6 that was

  851. exactly what

  852. Paul was

  853. writing to

  854. as he

  855. wrote to

  856. people who

  857. were slaves

  858. and said

  859. well here's

  860. how you

  861. should behave

  862. towards your

  863. boss.

  864. Three things

  865. I think I

  866. would say

  867. about that.

  868. The first

  869. Paul says

  870. is we

  871. should be

  872. obedient.

  873. Says slaves

  874. obey your

  875. earthly masters

  876. with respect

  877. and fear

  878. and with

  879. sincerity of

  880. heart just

  881. as you

  882. would obey

  883. Christ.

  884. Sometimes

  885. our bosses

  886. aren't very

  887. easy to get

  888. on with.

  889. I was

  890. thinking back

  891. I think I

  892. had about

  893. 25 bosses

  894. over my

  895. period working

  896. in the

  897. commercial

  898. world.

  899. Some of

  900. them were

  901. very good

  902. but I

  903. think of

  904. one or

  905. two who

  906. were

  907. bullies

  908. or who

  909. were very

  910. lazy and

  911. took credit

  912. for other

  913. things they

  914. didn't do.

  915. I think of

  916. at least one

  917. who showed

  918. a great deal

  919. of favouritism

  920. to some

  921. groups and

  922. not to

  923. others.

  924. And it

  925. can be

  926. difficult

  927. working with

  928. a boss

  929. as it

  930. could be

  931. for a

  932. slave working

  933. with a

  934. master.

  935. Paul says

  936. your duty

  937. if you're

  938. in a work

  939. environment

  940. however

  941. difficult

  942. your boss

  943. is to

  944. be obedient

  945. to them

  946. because you

  947. are obeying

  948. them

  949. just as

  950. you would

  951. obey

  952. Christ.

  953. He then

  954. says we

  955. should be

  956. conscientious.

  957. So we

  958. obey them

  959. not only to

  960. win favour

  961. when their

  962. eyes

  963. is on us

  964. but also

  965. when their

  966. eye is not

  967. on us.

  968. We are to

  969. serve

  970. wholeheartedly.

  971. And it's

  972. not just a

  973. case of doing

  974. the minimum

  975. we can get

  976. away with

  977. for our

  978. boss and

  979. trying to

  980. please them,

  981. trying to do

  982. what we

  983. think they

  984. will like

  985. but actually

  986. to do

  987. the minimum

  988. that is

  989. feasible

  990. for them.

  991. We are

  992. to serve

  993. wholeheartedly

  994. and we are

  995. to serve

  996. wholeheartedly

  997. says Paul

  998. as if you

  999. were serving

  1000. the Lord

  1001. not people.

  1002. Again

  1003. you look at

  1004. your boss

  1005. and you

  1006. think I

  1007. need to

  1008. serve that

  1009. person and

  1010. work for

  1011. them in

  1012. the same

  1013. way as

  1014. if I was

  1015. serving

  1016. Christ.

  1017. because God

  1018. has chosen

  1019. to put

  1020. them over

  1021. me in

  1022. the situation

  1023. I am

  1024. in just

  1025. now and

  1026. I need

  1027. to work

  1028. for them

  1029. in the

  1030. same way

  1031. as if I

  1032. was working

  1033. for Christ.

  1034. And then

  1035. the final

  1036. thing I'd

  1037. suggest is

  1038. that we

  1039. should be

  1040. uncomplaining.

  1041. Titus 2

  1042. again talking

  1043. to slaves

  1044. he says

  1045. teach the

  1046. slaves to

  1047. be subject

  1048. to their

  1049. masters and

  1050. everything

  1051. to try to

  1052. please them

  1053. not to

  1054. talk back

  1055. to them.

  1056. For me

  1057. one of the

  1058. key things

  1059. in terms

  1060. of serving

  1061. God and

  1062. of being

  1063. a witness

  1064. if you like

  1065. to my

  1066. bosses was

  1067. to be

  1068. someone who

  1069. was obedient

  1070. who was

  1071. conscientious

  1072. and who

  1073. didn't argue

  1074. if I was

  1075. given something

  1076. I didn't

  1077. really fancy

  1078. or that I

  1079. felt I

  1080. shouldn't be

  1081. doing.

  1082. It was to

  1083. be uncomplaining

  1084. and here's the

  1085. difficult bit

  1086. it wasn't just

  1087. to be uncomplaining

  1088. to my boss

  1089. it was also

  1090. not to go

  1091. back and

  1092. complain to

  1093. others about

  1094. what my boss

  1095. had told me

  1096. to do.

  1097. A lot of that

  1098. goes on in the

  1099. offices and they're

  1100. complaining about

  1101. the boss.

  1102. I'd suggest

  1103. by and

  1104. large as

  1105. Christians it's

  1106. not our

  1107. place to

  1108. complain about

  1109. those whom

  1110. God has put

  1111. over us

  1112. whom we

  1113. should be

  1114. serving as

  1115. if they

  1116. were the

  1117. Lord.

  1118. We should

  1119. work in a

  1120. way that

  1121. is uncomplaining.

  1122. people

  1123. but there

  1124. can be

  1125. difficulties with

  1126. bosses.

  1127. I've called

  1128. it ethical

  1129. dilemmas.

  1130. There are

  1131. situations

  1132. which you

  1133. might come

  1134. across in

  1135. the workplace

  1136. where we're

  1137. asked to do

  1138. something and

  1139. we think that

  1140. is absolutely

  1141. wrong.

  1142. As a

  1143. Christian I

  1144. don't think I

  1145. should be doing

  1146. that.

  1147. So the boss

  1148. might say

  1149. let's just

  1150. change these

  1151. figures a little

  1152. bit to make

  1153. them look

  1154. better.

  1155. Or let's

  1156. discharge this

  1157. customer a bit

  1158. more because

  1159. we can and

  1160. they probably

  1161. won't notice

  1162. that we've

  1163. overcharged

  1164. them.

  1165. And lots of

  1166. other examples

  1167. we could give

  1168. like that.

  1169. And in these

  1170. situations I

  1171. suggest we're

  1172. not called to

  1173. be obedient to

  1174. our boss.

  1175. There is the

  1176. higher calling

  1177. that we need

  1178. to obey God

  1179. rather than

  1180. men.

  1181. For most of

  1182. us there are

  1183. very rare

  1184. situations that

  1185. we do need

  1186. to be aware

  1187. of them.

  1188. It's not

  1189. uncritical

  1190. obedience to

  1191. a human

  1192. boss.

  1193. it is

  1194. seeing them

  1195. as God's

  1196. representer

  1197. and serving

  1198. them as if

  1199. they were

  1200. the Lord

  1201. by and

  1202. large.

  1203. But if

  1204. they ask

  1205. us to

  1206. do things

  1207. we know

  1208. are wrong

  1209. then we

  1210. need to

  1211. opt out

  1212. of that

  1213. and say

  1214. no that's

  1215. not for

  1216. me.

  1217. And hopefully

  1218. they will

  1219. respect us

  1220. for it and

  1221. if they don't

  1222. they're probably

  1223. the wrong

  1224. boss for us

  1225. to begin

  1226. with.

  1227. Very difficult

  1228. sometimes but

  1229. we need to

  1230. have that

  1231. distinction

  1232. as well.

  1233. Very quickly

  1234. I suppose this

  1235. is in many

  1236. ways the

  1237. biggest point

  1238. but we're

  1239. going to

  1240. cover it

  1241. reasonably

  1242. quickly because

  1243. we do have

  1244. an interview

  1245. coming up

  1246. in a few

  1247. minutes.

  1248. Who am I

  1249. working for?

  1250. Ultimately I

  1251. am working

  1252. for my

  1253. Lord.

  1254. And how

  1255. am I

  1256. working for

  1257. the Lord?

  1258. Well in

  1259. Colossians 3

  1260. which is a

  1261. kind of

  1262. parallel passage

  1263. to what Paul

  1264. talks about

  1265. in Ephesians

  1266. he says very

  1267. clearly it is

  1268. the Lord

  1269. Christ you

  1270. are serving.

  1271. That's the

  1272. context of

  1273. works of

  1274. slaves and

  1275. masters.

  1276. So he's

  1277. not just

  1278. saying here

  1279. you should

  1280. treat them

  1281. as if they

  1282. were the

  1283. Lord but

  1284. you're working

  1285. for someone

  1286. else.

  1287. Ultimately you

  1288. are working

  1289. for the

  1290. Lord.

  1291. Colossians 3

    Colossians 3:24

  1292. verse 24.

  1293. And what

  1294. does that

  1295. affect in

  1296. our workplace

  1297. if we say

  1298. I am

  1299. working for

  1300. the Lord?

  1301. Well it

  1302. affects first

  1303. of all our

  1304. attitudes.

  1305. What is my

  1306. attitude towards

  1307. work?

  1308. And more

  1309. importantly

  1310. perhaps what

  1311. is my

  1312. attitude towards

  1313. others?

  1314. passage from

  1315. Philippians

  1316. will be

  1317. very familiar

  1318. just let me

  1319. read these

  1320. two verses

  1321. to you.

  1322. Do nothing

  1323. out of selfish

  1324. ambition,

  1325. their selfish

  1326. ambition or

  1327. being conceit

  1328. rather than

  1329. humility value

  1330. others above

  1331. yourselves not

  1332. looking to

  1333. your own

  1334. interests but

  1335. each of you

  1336. looking to

  1337. the interests

  1338. of others.

  1339. In a work

  1340. environment where

  1341. very much often

  1342. people are looking

  1343. to their own

  1344. interests, looking

  1345. at their own

  1346. ambitions and

  1347. how they can

  1348. further their

  1349. own careers.

  1350. We can really

  1351. stand out as

  1352. Christians if

  1353. we are there

  1354. to serve the

  1355. Lord and we

  1356. come with the

  1357. attitude I am

  1358. also there to

  1359. serve others and

  1360. to look after

  1361. their interests

  1362. even more than

  1363. my own.

  1364. And then there is

  1365. the actions.

  1366. There is what we

  1367. do and how we

  1368. do it.

  1369. So in 1 Timothy

  1370. 6 Paul is

  1371. talking essentially

  1372. to people who

  1373. are wealthy but

  1374. I think the

  1375. verse here would

  1376. apply to others

  1377. as well.

  1378. 1 Timothy 6

    1 Timothy 6:18

  1379. verse 18 he

  1380. says command

  1381. them to do

  1382. good, to be

  1383. rich in good

  1384. deeds and to

  1385. be generous and

  1386. willing to

  1387. share.

  1388. So what we

  1389. do in our

  1390. work, whatever

  1391. work means for

  1392. us, should be

  1393. doing good,

  1394. doing good

  1395. deeds.

  1396. Not doing

  1397. things which

  1398. are under

  1399. hand or

  1400. which are

  1401. lazy or

  1402. which are

  1403. sloppy or

  1404. which we're

  1405. doing the

  1406. minimum we can

  1407. get away with.

  1408. It is doing

  1409. good deeds

  1410. and being

  1411. generous, being

  1412. rich in what

  1413. we do towards

  1414. others.

  1415. Our actions

  1416. should reflect

  1417. the fact that

  1418. we are serving

  1419. the Lord and

  1420. that we are

  1421. living for

  1422. him.

  1423. And then

  1424. finally there's

  1425. my word.

  1426. Now I think a

  1427. couple of weeks

  1428. time Graham will

  1429. be talking in a

  1430. bit more about

  1431. the witness that

  1432. we have at

  1433. work but let me

  1434. just talk briefly

  1435. about that just

  1436. now.

  1437. 1 Peter 3

  1438. and verse 15

  1439. he says,

  1440. In your heart

  1441. revere Christ

  1442. as Lord.

  1443. Always be

  1444. prepared to

  1445. give an answer

  1446. to everyone

  1447. who asks you

  1448. to give the

  1449. reason for the

  1450. hope that you

  1451. have but do

  1452. this with

  1453. gentleness and

  1454. respect.

  1455. For me in many

  1456. ways in the

  1457. office environment

  1458. this was the

  1459. most difficult

  1460. one.

  1461. By and large

  1462. I felt that I

  1463. worked with

  1464. integrity and

  1465. I was reasonably

  1466. conscientious and

  1467. so on but

  1468. actually being

  1469. able to talk

  1470. and to witness

  1471. to others was

  1472. something that I

  1473. found really

  1474. difficult.

  1475. And in some

  1476. ways it is

  1477. difficult because

  1478. in many work

  1479. environments it

  1480. wouldn't really

  1481. be encouraged or

  1482. might be actively

  1483. discouraged and

  1484. we need to be

  1485. careful what we

  1486. do and how we

  1487. say it but also

  1488. there's the fear

  1489. of what people

  1490. will think of us

  1491. what they will

  1492. say about us if

  1493. we say anything

  1494. to them.

  1495. But for many of

  1496. us our workplace

  1497. wherever that

  1498. workplace is it

  1499. is the main

  1500. place where we

  1501. come in contact

  1502. with people who

  1503. aren't yet

  1504. Christians.

  1505. It is therefore

  1506. our main mission

  1507. field and is

  1508. where we should

  1509. be talking to

  1510. people about

  1511. the Lord Jesus

  1512. about the hope

  1513. that is in us.

  1514. But doing it

  1515. with gentleness

  1516. and with respect

  1517. and doing it

  1518. within as far

  1519. as we can

  1520. whatever parameters

  1521. our workplace

  1522. may set for it.

  1523. And that for

  1524. many of us can

  1525. be one of the

  1526. difficulties with

  1527. serving God

  1528. at work.

  1529. But by and

  1530. large employers

  1531. these days

  1532. wouldn't encourage

  1533. us to talk

  1534. about faith

  1535. or to seek

  1536. for each other

  1537. for the Lord

  1538. Jesus.

  1539. There can be

  1540. restrictions placed

  1541. on us.

  1542. And in general

  1543. as long as

  1544. there are not

  1545. total restrictions

  1546. in general

  1547. it's good to

  1548. go along with

  1549. them.

  1550. But ultimately

  1551. if the employer

  1552. says you can't

  1553. possibly share

  1554. your Christian

  1555. faith in the

  1556. workplace then

  1557. we have to say

  1558. well I'm here to

  1559. obey God

  1560. rather than

  1561. men might

  1562. be a different

  1563. employer and

  1564. might have

  1565. consequences for

  1566. us but we

  1567. can't be

  1568. totally silenced.

  1569. In my office

  1570. I for the last

  1571. 10 years or so

  1572. before I retired

  1573. was the leader

  1574. of a Christian

  1575. fellowship.

  1576. I have to say

  1577. I was dragged

  1578. kicking and

  1579. screaming into

  1580. leading the

  1581. Christian fellowship

  1582. a guy called

  1583. Ian Archibald

  1584. bugged me

  1585. until I got

  1586. right to doing

  1587. it.

  1588. But it was

  1589. in many ways

  1590. quite a fulfilling

  1591. thing to do.

  1592. But it was

  1593. also quite a

  1594. difficult thing

  1595. to do in

  1596. terms of

  1597. letting people

  1598. know we were

  1599. there and

  1600. being able to

  1601. reach out to

  1602. others.

  1603. And essentially

  1604. my office and

  1605. things were

  1606. slightly changing

  1607. as I left.

  1608. My office were

  1609. happy for us to

  1610. meet together as

  1611. Christians and

  1612. to pray and to

  1613. study the Bible

  1614. but not happy for

  1615. us to advertise

  1616. it and certainly

  1617. not happy for us

  1618. to have any kind

  1619. of evangelistic

  1620. element to it.

1621. And I felt it was

  1622. right to honour

  1623. that and we did

  1624. things by word of

  1625. mouth and we got

  1626. involved in business

  1627. alpha and encouraged

  1628. people to go there

  1629. and so on.

  1630. But your employer if

  1631. you're in an

  1632. employment may place

  1633. restrictions on

  1634. what you can do

  1635. by and large

  1636. these should be

  1637. respected but

  1638. there may be

  1639. situations where

  1640. you have to say

  1641. well I'm a

  1642. Christian I can't

  1643. be totally silent

  1644. about my faith

  1645. in the Lord

  1646. Jesus and in

  1647. seeking to win

  1648. others for him.

  1649. So four groups

  1650. of people we're

  1651. working for.

  1652. I'm working for

  1653. myself, I'm

  1654. working for others

  1655. whom I'm serving

  1656. through my work,

  1657. I'm working for my

  1658. boss if I have

  1659. one and above

  1660. all I'm working

  1661. for the Lord.

  1662. Let's return to

  1663. the rooms as we

  1664. finish and our

  1665. two rooms have

  1666. become one room

1667. and this is how it

  1668. should be for us

  1669. if we're Christians

  1670. and we're at work

  1671. and again I say

  1672. work is as wide

  1673. as we need to

  1674. make it.

  1675. There should be

  1676. one room that

  1677. covers our faith

  1678. and our work.

  1679. We don't move

  1680. from one to the

  1681. other and leave

  1682. our faith behind

  1683. on a Monday

  1684. and have

  1685. different attitudes

  1686. and different

  1687. thoughts on the

  1688. Monday than we

  1689. do on a Sunday.

  1690. And if someone

  1691. asks us what

  1692. do you do?

  1693. Well here's a

  1694. possible answer.

  1695. What do I do?

  1696. I am a servant

  1697. of Jesus Christ.

  1698. That includes

  1699. being a doctor,

  1700. a teacher,

  1701. an actuary,

  1702. whatever it is

  1703. that you are.

  1704. Primarily serving

  1705. Christ.

  1706. He is the one

  1707. ultimately whom

  1708. we work for.

  1709. But as part of

  1710. that, part of

  1711. his calling for

  1712. us, we have

  1713. a job and in

  1714. that job we

  1715. seek to glorify

  1716. him and to

  1717. live for him.

  1718. Let's go out

  1719. and try and do

  1720. that in whatever

  1721. situation we are

  1722. this week and

  1723. to be good

  1724. servants of

  1725. Jesus Christ.

  1726. Let's pray.

  1727. Our Father,

  1728. we thank you

  1729. that you have

  1730. placed all of

  1731. us in a

  1732. situation

  1733. where we

  1734. can serve

  1735. others.

  1736. Whether it

  1737. is paid

  1738. employment or

  1739. voluntary work

  1740. or in a

  1741. home or

  1742. whatever else

  1743. it is that

  1744. you have for

  1745. us and

  1746. studying as

  1747. well.

  1748. We thank you

  1749. that these

  1750. are where

  1751. you have

  1752. placed us.

  1753. These are

  1754. in a real

  1755. sense our

  1756. workplaces.

  1757. We pray

  1758. that you

  1759. will help

  1760. us in

  1761. them to

  1762. show love

  1763. and concern

  1764. for others.

  1765. That we

  1766. may recognize

  1767. the high

  1768. value that

  1769. you place

  1770. on work

  1771. and that

  1772. we may

  1773. recognize

  1774. that ultimately

  1775. we serve

  1776. the Lord

  1777. Christ.

  1778. Help us

  1779. this week

  1780. in whatever

  1781. our work

  1782. is to

  1783. glorify him

  1784. and to

  1785. live for him.

  1786. We ask

  1787. in his

  1788. name.

  1789. Amen.

  1790. Amen.

  1791. Amen.
