  1. Well, good morning, everyone. Let me add my welcome to Graham's.

  2. As you've already heard, my name's Alistair. I have the privilege of being on staff here.

  3. And it would be helpful if you have your Bibles open in front of you at Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  4. But before we dive into this passage and look at it together, let's have a word of prayer, shall we?

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the privilege that we have of gathering this morning to hear from your word.

  6. Father, we pray that you would touch us by your word, that we would be blessed, and that we would also be challenged.

  7. And we ask all of this, that we may glorify you in our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  8. So, just a show of hands, very quickly. How many of you have ever booked a holiday online before?

  9. There you go. So that's quite a lot of you.

  10. Now, I'm going to let you into a little bit of a secret. I'm not a great fan of technology.

  11. So I find it really, really scary booking a holiday online.

  12. Because you can look on the website. You find this amazing deal.

  13. You see these absolutely breathtaking photos.

  14. You read reviews of how people love that hotel, that resort, that country, that beach, whatever it is.

  15. And you're so excited.

  16. Because you've been saving up for it all year round.

  17. But the question that lingers in the back of my mind is, what will I find when I get there?

  18. What will I find when I get there? Will it be as nice as it's supposed to be?

  19. And so, when Sabine and I went on our honeymoon in 2013 in May, we went to a hotel in Graz in Austria.

  20. We were there for two days.

  21. And my brother-in-law had said that it was an amazing hotel with a fantastic view.

  22. So we were really excited.

  23. So you can imagine how devastated we were when we pulled up to a construction site.

  24. The hotel that we were staying for, staying at for two days, had a 360 degree building site around it.

  25. So it was not very nice.

  26. And there are huge reviews, there are many reviews online of people finding dirty rooms, bugs in the shower.

  27. Of just not finding things the way they were supposed to be.

  28. Well, the big question that I want us to think about this morning is, what is the king going to find?

  29. What will the king find?

  30. So when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, is he going to find a people who are devoted to him?

  31. A people who love him and who worship him in spirit and truth?

  32. Or will he find a construction site?

  33. Will he find a people who make a whole load of noise, but on the inside, they are spiritually bare and empty?

  34. What will the king find?

  35. Now, why do I say that this is the question we're going to think about this morning?

  36. Who is this king that we're talking about and where is he going to find something?

  37. Well, let's just have a quick recap of where we've been in Luke's gospel.

  38. Maybe you remember at the beginning of Luke's gospel, Luke says that he has written an orderly account to Theophilus, a man, a friend of his,

  39. that he may have certainty about the things that he's been taught concerning Jesus Christ.

  40. And throughout Luke's gospel, Luke has left us little signposts to help us navigate through this orderly account of the life of Jesus.

  41. So in Luke chapter 9, verse 51, it says,

    Luke 9:51

  42. And he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  43. And then in chapter 13, 22 and 17, 11, there is a phrase which says along the lines of,

  44. And Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.

  45. So the whole of Luke's gospel has been building up to the moment that we see on the page right in front of us.

  46. In Luke chapter 19, verse 28, the king arrives in Jerusalem.

    Luke 19:28

  47. Now this is the beginning of a new section in Luke's gospel and the orderly account of the life of Jesus.

  48. And it is from Luke chapter 19, verse 28 to 21, verse 30.

  49. And the big question that we're going to be thinking about over the next few weeks is,

  50. Will God's people accept God's king?

  51. Will God's people accept God's king?

  52. Jesus is God's king who was sent by God to rule over God's people.

  53. And we're going to spend a few weeks in this section.

  54. I want you to have that question in the back of your mind.

  55. But at the beginning of this new section, we see Jesus, God's king, the chosen one.

  56. So the question that we're going to ask is, what will the king find?

  57. There are three things that we'll see this morning.

  58. We'll see the king arrives.

  59. We'll see the king weeps and the king rebukes.

  60. Will Jesus find a people who are expecting him?

  61. A people who are excited about his arrival and the arrival of God's kingdom?

  62. Or will he find a people who've turned their backs on him?

  63. Well, let's look at the passage and see what God has to teach us this morning.

  64. So the first thing that we see is that the king arrives.

  65. Verses 28 to 40, the king arrives.

  66. So at this moment, Jesus is standing just outside Jerusalem.

  67. He's just taught the crowds and disciples about the kingdom of God.

  68. And he turns to two of his disciples and says, go to the next village and you'll find a donkey.

  69. Bring it to me.

  70. And so they go and bring it to Jesus because the Lord needs it, as Jesus says.

  71. Do you remember what you were doing on the 29th of April, 2011?

  72. Probably not.

  73. Maybe it's just a date I've picked out, but it's actually a pretty important date to the royal family.

  74. So maybe you were sitting at home glued to your television as you watched the wedding procession of Prince William and his wife-to-be, Kate.

  75. You probably remember scenes similar to this one.

  76. Tons of people flocked to the streets to see the wedding, to see the procession as the prince and his bride made their way to the church,

  77. surrounded by big, beautiful horses, by people dressed in lovely and frankly a little bit strange outfits as well.

  78. But they were being pulled in this really lovely decorated carriage.

  79. It was even declared a public holiday so that people could be there in London.

  80. Or if you couldn't be there in person, that you could at least watch it on television.

  81. That's the kind of entrance we'd expect from royalty, isn't it?

  82. Even in Jesus' day, when the king returned to a city, there was a huge festival that took place which took absolutely days to prepare.

  83. The animals were fattened weeks in advance to prepare a huge feast.

  84. The streets were lined and jam-packed with people who were shouting encouragements and expressing their love for their king who's just returned.

  85. But Jesus doesn't make an entrance like that.

  86. Instead of coming in with all the attention on him, instead of being pulled by a huge horse and a lovely carriage,

  87. Jesus is going to enter Jerusalem on the back of a humble donkey.

  88. Now this isn't an insignificant detail that Luke has just thrown in there to pique our interest.

  89. But this detail helps us see who Jesus is.

  90. So let me read a verse from the Old Testament which is pointing forward to the promised king of God, the Messiah,

  91. the one who would save God's people.

  92. This verse is from the book of Zechariah,

  93. which was written pointing forward to the day that God would reconcile the world to himself.

  94. It points to the day where God's kingdom would come and the arrival of his king.

  95. So let's read this verse together.

  96. Rejoice greatly, daughter Zion.

  97. Shout, daughter Jerusalem.

  98. See, your king comes to you,

  99. righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey,

  100. on a colt, a fowl of a donkey.

  101. Do you see the significance of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey?

  102. Jesus hasn't just randomly thought,

  103. oh yeah, that would be a good way to get into the city.

  104. Take the load off my feet.

  105. But Jesus has done this to point out his identity as God's king.

  106. And the whole of the Old Testament points to Jesus being God's king,

  107. the Messiah of God's people.

  108. Look at the description of the king in this verse.

  109. God's chosen king will be righteous and victorious,

  110. but he will also be humble.

  111. Now based on what we've already seen in Luke's gospel

  112. and based on what we'll see in these final chapters,

  113. this is a completely fitting description of Jesus, isn't it?

  114. Jesus is the son of God.

  115. He never sinned.

  116. He was perfect.

  117. Never rebelled against God.

  118. And yet he died a criminal's death.

  119. Was it because he deserved it?

  120. No.

  121. Was it because his enemies defeated him?

  122. Definitely not.

  123. In fact, the absolute opposite is true.

  124. At the cross of Jesus, we see his righteousness

  125. and his victory most clearly.

  126. Why?

  127. Because at the cross of Jesus,

  128. he defeated mankind's worst enemy, sin.

  129. The sin which cuts us off from God.

  130. The wrongdoings of our lives,

  131. which make us deserving of God's wrath.

  132. All of that was poured on Jesus,

  133. but he was not defeated.

  134. He rose victorious from the grave three days later.

  135. He defeated sin and death

  136. and made reconciliation with God possible

  137. for all those who call on his name.

  138. This is God's king.

  139. This is the king who God had chosen

  140. to rule over his people.

  141. So think back to the question.

  142. What is this king going to find?

  143. As Jesus makes his way to Jerusalem,

  144. we see two responses.

  145. We see faith and we see rejection.

  146. Look at what the disciples are doing

  147. in verses 37 and 38.

  148. The whole crowd of disciples began joyfully

  149. to praise God in a loud voice

  150. for all the miracles they had seen.

  151. Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.

  152. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  153. Jesus' disciples are declaring who Jesus is

  154. and they are glorifying and praising God

  155. for the wonderful things that they have seen.

  156. They might not have fully understood

  157. exactly what Jesus' kingdom would look like

  158. or exactly how Jesus is going to be God's king,

  159. but they believed that he was the Messiah

  160. and they joyfully worshipped God because of it.

  161. The disciples had faith

  162. and that faith led them to joyfully worshipping God.

  163. So that's the faith of the disciples.

  164. But the other response is the Pharisees.

  165. They reject God.

  166. See, they heard what the disciples were shouting

  167. and they turned to Jesus and said,

  168. Jesus, stop them.

  169. Rebuke them.

  170. Do you remember last week

  171. how Graham took us through a parable

  172. and we saw some servants who didn't want a king?

  173. Well, this week we see it,

  174. but not in a parable.

  175. We see it in real life.

  176. The Pharisees are rejecting God's king.

  177. And the devastating news

  178. is that the Pharisees should have been the ones

  179. who were expecting Jesus.

  180. They should have been joining in the disciples

  181. as they shouted praise to God,

  182. not telling Jesus to stop them.

  183. See, the Pharisees should have been welcoming Jesus in.

  184. They should have been joining in with the shouting.

  185. These people were the teachers of the law.

  186. They were the people who taught Israel about God.

  187. They taught the Old Testament.

  188. They could quote you.

  189. They could quote to you tons of the Old Testament.

  190. They could speak to you for hours

  191. about God's promised king who would come.

  192. But as the king stands right in front of them,

  193. instead of cheering with joy,

  194. they snap at and they reject Jesus.

  195. The people who should have been standing

  196. at the gates of Jerusalem to welcome Jesus in.

  197. The people who should have been hanging

  198. on his every single word.

  199. Instead of welcoming him, they reject him.

  200. But Jesus says,

  201. if my disciples stop singing praises to God,

  202. then the stones will cry out.

  203. No amount of opposition will stop

  204. the declaration going forth

  205. that God's king has arrived.

  206. Now as we sit here this morning,

  207. over 2,000 years away from this event,

  208. the same declaration rings true.

  209. God's king has arrived.

  210. The question that I want you to think about

  211. is how will we react to God's king?

  212. Will we believe in him and praise God joyfully?

  213. Or will we reject him?

  214. Now a question that you may be thinking about is,

  215. well, why is Jesus deserving of joyful praise?

  216. Well, because he is God in the flesh.

  217. He is the son of God.

  218. He is the solution to our biggest problem.

  219. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  220. at the beginning of the Bible,

  221. we see Adam and Eve rebel against God.

  222. They reject God's rule.

  223. They say, we don't want your care.

  224. But a promise is made amidst all the chaos

  225. that one day God would send a man

  226. to save the people of this world.

  227. And this person will defeat sin and Satan

  228. and will reconcile the world to himself.

  229. The whole of the Old Testament

  230. fleshes out what that promise looks like

  231. and it finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

  232. The one who is humbly walking towards the cross

  233. even though he is righteous and blameless.

  234. Jesus is going to the cross

  235. so that our sins can be dealt with.

  236. So that we can be called the children of God.

  237. Jesus will take all of our sinfulness

  238. so that he can give us his righteousness.

  239. That is why Jesus is deserving

  240. of joyful praise this morning.

  241. Will you accept this king?

  242. Will you think about him

  243. or will you reject him?

  244. Now this is not a decision to make lightly

  245. because it has eternal significance

  246. and because it matters so much to Jesus.

  247. And we see that in verses 41 to 44

  248. because the king arrives

  249. but the king weeps.

  250. Verses 41 to 44.

  251. So let me ask you a little bit

  252. of a personal question this morning.

  253. What makes you cry?

  254. Think about that for a second.

  255. What makes you cry?

  256. Now for those of you who know me well

  257. and there's quite a few of you here this morning

  258. you will know that I'm not

  259. the most emotional person in the world.

  260. And so tears are not something

  261. that happen in my life every single day.

  262. But like everyone else in the world

  263. I do cry.

  264. But I think there are two kinds of tears, aren't there?

  265. There are the good kind

  266. where we cry because of joy

  267. because we're happy

  268. and then there are the bad kind.

  269. We cry because we're hurt.

  270. So the last time I recall crying tears of joy

  271. was at my wedding in 2013.

  272. As I watched my wife Sabina come down the aisle

  273. I had a wee choke

  274. and you did that thing

  275. and you're like,

  276. no I'm not crying, I'm not crying.

  277. That's exactly what happened.

  278. But I was crying tears of joy.

  279. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

  280. But maybe you're not like me.

  281. Maybe you cry at a good movie scene.

  282. Maybe you cry at the end of a nice book

  283. that you've been reading.

  284. But sadly the truth is

  285. that most of the tears that happen in our world

  286. are tears of pain.

  287. We cry when we lose loved ones

  288. or when we get hurt ourselves.

  289. But have you ever wondered

  290. what makes God cry?

  291. Or have you ever wondered

  292. if God cries at all?

  293. Well in verses 41 to 43

  294. we see that God does cry

  295. and we will find out

  296. what makes Him cry.

  297. As Jesus looks over the city

  298. of Jerusalem

  299. He weeps.

  300. Jesus is weeping

  301. because of their disobedience.

  302. So what does the king find

  303. as he arrives in Jerusalem?

  304. Well he finds

  305. a disobedient people

  306. who have turned their hearts

  307. away from God.

  308. Jesus is weeping

  309. over the constant

  310. constant

  311. disobedience

  312. that the nation of Israel

  313. have demonstrated

  314. against God.

  315. All you have to do

  316. is skim

  317. through the Old Testament

  318. and you see time

  319. and time again

  320. how God's chosen people

  321. reject God's law

  322. and reject the people

  323. that God sends to them

  324. to call them back to Him.

  325. Jesus weeps

  326. because these are the people

  327. who are set apart by God.

  328. And instead of obeying Him

  329. and living in peace

  330. like He wanted them to

  331. they reject God

  332. and they are also going to

  333. reject God's chosen king.

  334. Jesus weeps

  335. because He loves

  336. these people.

  337. Imagine the tears

  338. of a father

  339. if he

  340. if his child

  341. spits in his face

  342. turns his back

  343. and as he walks away

  344. he shouts

  345. Dad I want nothing

  346. to do with you anymore.

  347. I don't want your rules

  348. I don't want your good plan

  349. for my life

  350. I don't want your protection

  351. or your care

  352. I want to live my life

  353. my way.

  354. Wouldn't that bring

  355. any parent to tears?

  356. Well that's what we see

  357. happening in these verses

  358. before us.

  359. Jesus is overlooking

  360. the city

  361. which should have

  362. welcomed Him in

  363. but instead

  364. it's turned its back

  365. it's back to Him

  366. and He weeps

  367. because He loves

  368. these people

  369. and He doesn't want

  370. the judgment

  371. to befall them.

  372. They want nothing

  373. to do with Him.

  374. In verse 42

  375. Jesus makes a reference

  376. to peace.

  377. Jesus says

  378. that if only they knew

  379. where they could find

  380. true peace

  381. but it is hidden

  382. from their eyes.

  383. Jesus is speaking

  384. about the peace

  385. that people have

  386. when they are

  387. in a right relationship

  388. with God.

  389. See if God's chosen

  390. people had lived

  391. according to His law

  392. if they had accepted

  393. God's King

  394. then they would have

  395. enjoyed peace with God

  396. but instead

  397. they rebelled

  398. and rejected

  399. Jesus.

  400. And so now

  401. Jesus speaks

  402. judgment

  403. speaks of the judgment

  404. that will come

  405. on them

  406. in verses

  407. 43 to 44.

  408. Their enemies

  409. will destroy

  410. the city

  411. not one stone

  412. will be left

  413. in its place.

  414. This is the seriousness

  415. of their disobedience

  416. that's been going on

  417. for generations.

  418. And it's all because

  419. verse 44

  420. they did not recognize

  421. the time

  422. of God's

  423. coming to them.

  424. As Jesus

  425. is saying this

  426. He's overlooking

  427. the city

  428. that should have

  429. been celebrating

  430. as the disciples did.

  431. And as God

  432. is knocking

  433. on the gate

  434. of Jerusalem

  435. He knows

  436. that He will

  437. be rejected.

  438. When the king

  439. comes to town

  440. you'd expect him

  441. to be met with

  442. rejoicing and celebration

  443. wouldn't you?

  444. But instead

  445. this chosen king

  446. in a short time

  447. will not be met

  448. with a feast

  449. He will not be met

  450. with royal robes

  451. but He will be met

  452. with a cross.

  453. He will not be met

  454. with crowds

  455. singing praises

  456. and love

  457. but He'll be met

  458. with a crowd

  459. who are shouting

  460. crucify Him.

  461. Jesus isn't crying

  462. because He needs

  463. attention.

  464. God isn't weeping

  465. because He needs

  466. Jerusalem to praise Him

  467. but God weeps

  468. because of the judgment

  469. that will befall them

  470. because of their

  471. disobedience

  472. and because God

  473. loves them.

  474. They've rejected

  475. the one person

  476. who could bring

  477. them peace.

  478. The one person

  479. who truly cares

  480. for them

  481. and it brings tears

  482. to God's eyes.

  483. Jesus weeps

  484. because of disobedience.

  485. Do we weep

  486. when the world

  487. rejects God?

  488. In a church

  489. I used to attend

  490. years ago

  491. we sang a song

  492. and one of the lines

  493. said this

  494. Break my heart

  495. for what breaks yours.

  496. is that our prayer?

  497. Does our heart

  498. break

  499. and do we

  500. weep for the same

  501. things that grieve

  502. God?

  503. Do we cry

  504. over the lost

  505. souls in this world

  506. who are dying

  507. without a knowledge

  508. of their need

  509. for Jesus?

  510. There are so many

  511. people out there

  512. who have no idea

  513. about the good news

  514. of Jesus.

  515. They don't understand

  516. that Jesus'

  517. mission

  518. was to come

  519. and seek

  520. and save

  521. the lost.

  522. And how will they

  523. find out the truth

  524. about Jesus

  525. if no one tells them?

  526. We should

  527. take the world's

  528. rejection

  529. of God's

  530. King

  531. seriously.

  532. We should

  533. tell people

  534. of their need

  535. to hear about Jesus

  536. because he is

  537. the only one

  538. who can bring

  539. the peace

  540. that the whole

  541. world

  542. is groaning

  543. for.

  544. Peace with God.

  545. Do we love

  546. people enough

  547. to tell them

  548. about Jesus?

  549. Do we care

  550. enough for those

  551. around us

  552. to throw

  553. our fears

  554. and our concerns

  555. and our worries

  556. of feeling

  557. uncomfortable

  558. and do we just

  559. tell them

  560. their need

  561. of Jesus

  562. our Savior?

  563. Let's ask

  564. God to give

  565. us a burden

  566. for the lost

  567. people of this

  568. world

  569. who do not

  570. know Jesus.

  571. How will you

  572. react this morning

  573. to God's

  574. King?

  575. Do you

  576. have faith

  577. and joyful

  578. praise of the

  579. disciples or

  580. are you

  581. rejecting Jesus

  582. and living in

  583. disobedience to

  584. God?

  585. Your answer

  586. to that question

  587. really is not

  588. insignificant.

  589. It affects the

  590. way you live

  591. now and it

  592. will affect

  593. eternity.

  594. Everything that

  595. happens from

  596. now to the

  597. end of time.

  598. Those who are

  599. at peace with

  600. God have been

  601. promised to

  602. live in peace

  603. with God

  604. for eternity

  605. to have

  606. constant

  607. communion with

  608. God in

  609. the place

  610. that we

  611. call heaven

  612. but those

  613. who reject

  614. God

  615. Jesus says

  616. that God

  617. will reject

  618. them too

  619. and they

  620. will be

  621. under his

  622. just judgment

  623. forever.

  624. So if you've

  625. never thought

  626. about this

  627. this morning

  628. if you've

  629. never heard

  630. about this

  631. this morning

  632. please

  633. take time

  634. to think

  635. about it.

  636. ask the

  637. person who

  638. may be

  639. brought you

  640. to church

  641. this morning

  642. or come

  643. and speak

  644. to anyone

  645. you've

  646. seen up

  647. front.

  648. We would

  649. not want

  650. you to

  651. leave this

  652. building

  653. thinking

  654. that your

  655. response to

  656. God's

  657. king is

  658. irrelevant

  659. because it

  660. is not.

  661. It is of

  662. the utmost

  663. importance.

  664. So we've

  665. seen the

  666. king arrive.

  667. We've seen

  668. King Jesus

  669. weep and

  670. now in

  671. verses 45

  672. to 48

  673. we see the

  674. king rebukes.

  675. Jesus

  676. arrives in

  677. Jerusalem

  678. and he

  679. goes to

  680. the temple.

  681. Now what

  682. would you

  683. expect to

  684. find in

  685. a temple?

  686. You'd

  687. expect to

  688. see people

  689. who are

  690. devoted to

  691. praying and

  692. to worshipping

  693. God,

  694. wouldn't you?

  695. A place

  696. where people

  697. are devoted

  698. but instead

  699. Jesus finds

  700. that the

  701. temple has

  702. been turned

  703. into a

  704. market store.

  705. If people

  706. were to

  707. obey the

  708. Old Testament

  709. laws then

  710. they needed

  711. to travel to

  712. the temple

  713. and offer

  714. sacrifices.

  715. to God.

  716. But as you

  717. can imagine

  718. travelling with

  719. livestock and

  720. other animals

  721. wasn't the

  722. easiest thing

  723. not even

  724. today.

  725. And so

  726. in Jesus'

  727. day people

  728. set up shop

  729. and they

  730. would sell

  731. animals that

  732. people could

  733. buy so

  734. they could

  735. bring their

  736. sacrifices which

  737. is actually

  738. a pretty good

  739. thing, pretty

  740. helpful thing

  741. to do.

  742. However,

  743. the problem

  744. that Jesus

  745. is addressing

  746. here is that

  747. there seem to

  748. be people who

  749. in cooperation

  750. with the

  751. priests are

  752. selling animals

  753. in the

  754. courts of

  755. the temple.

  756. More

  757. specifically in

  758. the place

  759. where non-Jews

  760. are supposed

  761. to worship,

  762. the place where

  763. they're supposed

  764. to pray.

  765. And not only

  766. that but they're

  767. selling animals

  768. at an inflated

  769. price so that

  770. they can make

  771. money.

  772. They were

  773. corrupt and

  774. they were

  775. stopping people

  776. from worshipping

  777. God.

  778. These sales

  779. people were

  780. prohibiting people

  781. from their

  782. worship.

  783. They were

  784. making money

  785. off of

  786. people's

  787. worship and

  788. they weren't

  789. even thinking

  790. twice about

  791. it.

  792. They were

  793. trying to

  794. make money

  795. but in the

  796. process they

  797. were stopping

  798. people from

  799. coming to

  800. God.

  801. They put

  802. their financial

  803. gain above

  804. the spiritual

  805. need of

  806. people.

  807. And so

  808. Jesus drives

  809. them out.

  810. And in

  811. verse 46

  812. Jesus quotes

  813. from the

  814. book of

  815. Isaiah.

  816. Now you

  817. don't have to

  818. turn there but

  819. if we were

  820. to look

  821. back at

  822. that passage

  823. we would

  824. see that

  825. God is

  826. speaking to

  827. the people

  828. of Israel

  829. the leaders

  830. of Israel

  831. and he is

  832. saying that

  833. the temple

  834. is supposed to

  835. be a beacon

  836. of light.

  837. It is supposed

  838. to be the

  839. place where

  840. people can

  841. hear about

  842. God and

  843. the salvation

  844. that he

  845. offers.

  846. Let me read

  847. Isaiah 56

    Isaiah 56:7

  848. verse 7

  849. the verse

  850. that Jesus

  851. quotes.

  852. For my

  853. house will

  854. be called

  855. a house of

  856. prayer for

  857. all nations.

  858. Do you see

  859. the problem?

  860. The temple

  861. was supposed

  862. to be a

  863. house of

  864. prayer where

  865. all peoples

  866. from all

  867. over the

  868. world could

  869. come and

  870. hear about

  871. God and

  872. praise him.

  873. But now

  874. if anyone

  875. was to come

  876. to the

  877. temple instead

  878. of being able

  879. to pray in

  880. peace and

  881. quiet,

  882. instead of

  883. being able to

  884. pray and

  885. pour out their

  886. hearts before

  887. God,

  888. they would

  889. find market

  890. stalls.

  891. Instead of

  892. being able to

  893. listen to the

  894. priests and

  895. teachers of

  896. the law to

  897. understand the

  898. Old Testament

  899. to hear the

  900. marvelous works

  901. of the

  902. almighty

  903. creator God,

  904. they would

  905. find money

  906. lenders arguing

  907. for more and

  908. more interest.

  909. Instead of the

  910. temple being a

  911. welcoming place to

  912. foreigners,

  913. it has become a

  914. den of robbers.

  915. And so Jesus

  916. drives them out.

  917. But in verses

  918. 45 and 48,

  919. if you look down,

  920. you'll see the

  921. authority of

  922. God's king.

  923. In verse 45,

  924. Jesus drives out

  925. people and

  926. nobody stops

  927. him.

  928. He cleanses

  929. the temple and

  930. it's almost as

  931. if the people

  932. raise their

  933. hands, bow

  934. their heads and

  935. walk out because

  936. they know that

  937. what they're doing

  938. is wrong.

  939. They have been

  940. rebuked.

  941. And in verse

  942. 48, we see

  943. Jesus staying and

  944. teaching people in

  945. the temple and it

  946. says that they

  947. hung on his

  948. words.

  949. Now we don't

  950. know what Jesus

  951. was teaching the

  952. people as he

  953. spoke to them,

  954. but he must have

  955. been speaking

  956. directly into their

  957. lives and their

  958. situations, telling

  959. them exactly what

  960. they needed because

  961. of how they

  962. listened.

  963. Jesus spoke with

  964. an authority that

  965. was not the

  966. norm.

  967. He spoke with

  968. authority because

  969. of who he is.

  970. This is the king

  971. of God through

  972. whom and for

  973. whom the whole

  974. world was

  975. created.

  976. He has no

  977. beginning.

  978. He has no

  979. end.

  980. And he's

  981. teaching people if

  982. only they knew

  983. who he truly

  984. was.

  985. But the chief

  986. priests, the

  987. teachers of the

  988. law and the

  989. leaders of the

  990. people didn't

  991. like what Jesus

  992. was teaching and

  993. they wanted to

  994. kill him.

  995. Now based on

  996. what we've seen

  997. already in Luke's

  998. gospel, we've

  999. seen Jesus

  1000. teaching about the

  1001. kingdom of God.

  1002. He's been

  1003. teaching people

  1004. about their need

  1005. to repent and

  1006. turn to God and

  1007. their need to

  1008. follow him

  1009. urgently.

  1010. The kingdom of

  1011. God is at

  1012. hand.

  1013. But some

  1014. people didn't

  1015. like this

  1016. teaching.

  1017. The religious

  1018. leaders in

  1019. Jesus' day had

  1020. become so

  1021. focused on being

  1022. good enough for

  1023. God, so

  1024. focused on

  1025. looking the part

  1026. and saying the

  1027. right things,

  1028. looking good in

  1029. the eyes of the

  1030. people, that

  1031. they had

  1032. actually replaced

  1033. God by their

  1034. religious living.

  1035. God's

  1036. God's

  1037. God.

  1038. The king has

  1039. now arrived and

  1040. he's disrupting

  1041. their way of

  1042. living and

  1043. calling people

  1044. back to a

  1045. true sense of

  1046. God and a

  1047. true sense of

  1048. worship.

  1049. And they see

  1050. all of this and

  1051. they decide that

  1052. they're going to

  1053. kill Jesus.

1054. So as we draw to

  1055. a close this

  1056. morning, think

  1057. back to that

  1058. question.

  1059. What will the

  1060. king find?

  1061. Well, the king has

  1062. found a people who

  1063. praise him and

  1064. declare him as

  1065. king and lord, but

  1066. he has also found

  1067. a people who

  1068. have turned their

  1069. backs on him.

  1070. As he looked

  1071. over the city,

  1072. over a people

  1073. that he loved,

  1074. instead of finding

  1075. a spiritually

  1076. vibrant community

  1077. whose desire was

  1078. to praise and

  1079. worship God with

  1080. everything in

  1081. their lives, he

  1082. finds a rotten

  1083. people who in

  1084. their disobedience

  1085. have rejected God

  1086. and will come

  1087. under judgment.

  1088. King Jesus

  1089. walks into the

  1090. temple which

  1091. was supposed

  1092. to be a place

  1093. of prayer, but

  1094. it is a den

  1095. of robbers.

  1096. The people's

  1097. hearts have been

  1098. turned away from

  1099. God.

  1100. And you see the

  1101. love of a father

  1102. who weeps over

  1103. his children who

  1104. have walked away

  1105. and the discipline

  1106. of a loving father

  1107. who corrects them

  1108. because of their

  1109. disobedient actions.

  1110. God's love of a

  1111. God.

  1112. So I don't think

  1113. the king found

  1114. what he should

  1115. have found.

  1116. It shouldn't have

  1117. been this way.

1118. But let me ask us

  1119. a more urgent

  1120. question this

  1121. morning.

  1122. If this king,

  1123. if Jesus were to

  1124. look into our

  1125. hearts this morning,

  1126. what would he

  1127. find?

  1128. Would he find a

  1129. person who

  1130. praises and

  1131. worships God in

  1132. spirit and truth?

  1133. would he find a

  1134. pure heart whose

  1135. desire is to see

  1136. the good news of

  1137. Jesus go out from

  1138. this place and to

  1139. touch the whole

  1140. world, to reach

  1141. the lost souls of

  1142. this world?

  1143. Or would Jesus

  1144. find a heart which

  1145. has gone cold?

  1146. A person who

  1147. goes through all

  1148. the motions of a

  1149. religious lifestyle,

  1150. but a heart which

  1151. shows no real love

  1152. for God?

  1153. Whatever your

  1154. answer to that

  1155. question is this

  1156. morning, I would

  1157. encourage you to

  1158. keep your eyes on

  1159. Jesus.

  1160. Maybe you're

  1161. looking to him for

  1162. the first time, or

  1163. maybe you're

  1164. returning to him.

  1165. In a moment we're

  1166. going to end our

  1167. service by singing

  1168. these words about

  1169. Jesus.

  1170. This is our God,

  1171. the servant king.

1172. He calls us now to

  1173. follow him, to bring

1174. our lives as a daily

  1175. offering of worship

  1176. to the servant king.

  1177. As we sing these

1178. words, I want you to

  1179. think about them.

  1180. Jesus is the servant

  1181. king who left his

  1182. place of glory in

  1183. heaven to come down

1184. and live in a fallen,

  1185. corrupt, sinful world,

1186. to save a fallen and

  1187. corrupt and sinful

1188. people by dying on a

  1189. cross in our place.

  1190. Consider this king who

1191. calls us to follow him.

1192. What will the king find

  1193. in our hearts this

  1194. morning?

  1195. Let's pray together.

  1196. Just before we sing

  1197. our song, let's just

  1198. have a moment of

  1199. silence.

  1200. Consider this king and

  1201. consider our hearts

  1202. before him.

  1203. loving God in heavenly

  1204. father, we thank you

1205. that you are a God

  1206. who cares, that you

1207. are a God who forgives

1208. and that you are a God

  1209. who loves.

  1210. Father, forgive us for

1211. the times that we have

  1212. rejected you.

  1213. Forgive us for the

  1214. times when we rebel

  1215. against you.

1216. help us be a people

  1217. who welcome you in

  1218. every part of our

  1219. lives with joyful

  1220. praise because you

1221. are the only one who

  1222. is worthy of our

  1223. praise.

  1224. Our prayer this

  1225. morning is that as

  1226. you look into our

  1227. hearts, that you

  1228. would find a people

  1229. who are welcoming

1230. you in and not a

  1231. people who are

  1232. rejecting you.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.
