  1. As we take our seats, it would be helpful if you have that passage open in front of you.

  2. We're going to be referring to it as we go through this morning's sermon.

  3. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Alistair.

  4. I have the privilege of being on staff here at the church,

  5. and I have the joy of speaking on this passage.

  6. But before we look at it, let's just take a moment to still our hearts

  7. and pray to the God of this universe.

  8. Lord, we thank you that you are with us.

  9. We thank you that your rod and staff comfort us

  10. and that you have promised to never leave us.

  11. Help us remember these truths as we think about your word this morning

  12. and help us learn and be challenged from it.

  13. In Jesus' name we ask all these things. Amen.

  14. On December 29th, 1913, so it's quite a little bit away,

  15. there was an ad in the London Times newspaper by Ernest Shackleton.

  16. He was a polar explorer, and during his life he led three expeditions to the Antarctic.

  17. The ad in the Times read like this.

  18. Now when I first read this ad, my thought was,

  19. Ernest, what are you playing at?

  20. Why would you get an ad like that?

  21. You're not going to get anyone on your side.

  22. This is the worst recruitment strategy in the world.

  23. If you were going to write an ad like that,

  24. maybe you'd start with something along the lines of

  25. Antarctic cruise, get paid to be on holiday,

  26. skiing in untouched snow, unseen wildlife, majestic views.

  27. See, we'd love to sugarcoat it, wouldn't we?

  28. But the truth is that Ernest was giving an honest picture

  29. of what it would be like to go on an Antarctic expedition.

  30. He put all of his cards on the table,

  31. told the people the way it was going to be,

  32. and let them decide whether they wanted to join him or not.

  33. He didn't promise them a bed of roses,

  34. but told them exactly what to expect.

  35. And the truth is that it wasn't going to be pretty.

  36. Now in the passage that was read out to us earlier on,

  37. Jesus gives his disciples a similar kind of description, doesn't he?

  38. Jesus is telling his disciples what life is going to look like

  39. when he is taken away from them.

  40. Now at this point in Luke's Gospel,

  41. we are in Jerusalem with Jesus.

  42. Jesus arrived in chapter 19,

  43. and he's been teaching in the temple every day.

  44. But now Jesus turns and focuses on his disciples,

  45. because the cross is just on the horizon.

  46. In just a few days, their Lord and Savior will be crucified,

  47. but he will be raised from the dead.

  48. And when he is in heaven with the Father,

  49. there will be a time of waiting until his return.

  50. There will be a time where King Jesus is physically absent,

  51. and so in our passage this morning,

  52. we see the departing words of the returning King.

  53. The departing words of the returning King.

  54. Jesus is preparing his disciples

  55. for what life is going to be like

  56. as they wait for his second coming.

  57. And he gives them three imperatives,

  58. three actions that they are to do

  59. as they live in anticipation of his return.

  60. Watch out, stand firm, and look up.

  61. So let's look at these departing words

  62. of the returning King together.

  63. The first thing we see in verses 5 to 8,

  64. Jesus says to his disciples,

  65. Watch out, watch out.

  66. If you have an NIV this morning,

  67. or one of the Pew Bibles,

  68. look down with me at verse 8,

  69. and you'll see that Jesus says,

  70. Watch out that you are not deceived.

  71. What is it that the disciples are to watch out for?

  72. And why?

  73. Well, in verse 5,

  74. they are standing admiring the temple.

  75. They see the massive stones,

  76. the beautiful furnishings,

  77. the vast grounds which all point to

  78. the spectacular architectural achievement

  79. that the temple is.

  80. The temple is beautiful.

  81. It is big.

  82. It is a monument to remind people

  83. of the strength,

  84. power,

  85. and beauty of the God

  86. who is worshipped there.

  87. And quite rightfully,

  88. the disciples stand there

  89. and they're taken aback.

  90. And they're discussing

  91. how beautiful it is together.

  92. And then Jesus drops a bomb

  93. on their conversation.

  94. One day,

  95. Jesus says,

  96. this monument which is dedicated to God,

  97. this magnificent place of worship,

  98. will be gone.

  99. It will be destroyed.

  100. Not one stone will be left

  101. in its place.

  102. The outward beauty of the temple

  103. is no indication

  104. of the spiritual state

  105. of those who are in it.

  106. If you remember back to chapter 19,

  107. you'll remember that the spiritual state

  108. of those in the temple

  109. was not great.

  110. The temple was beautiful

  111. on the outside,

  112. but the hearts of those

  113. who were in it

  114. were far from beautiful.

  115. God's judgment is going to come

  116. on the people of Israel

  117. because of their disobedience.

  118. And the temple

  119. will be destroyed.

  120. Devastating news

  121. for any Jew.

  122. The temple was their place

  123. of worship.

  124. It was the place

  125. where they went to show

  126. their dedication

  127. and devotion to God.

  128. The place where they met with God

  129. and worshipped Him.

  130. And one day,

  131. it's all going to be gone.

  132. Can you imagine

  133. some of the questions

  134. running through the disciples' minds

  135. as they hear this?

  136. But Jesus,

  137. haven't you come

  138. to kick out the Romans?

  139. To sit on your earthly throne

  140. here and rule over Jerusalem

  141. as God's king?

  142. How can you say

  143. that the temple

  144. will be destroyed?

  145. Where will we worship God?

  146. Tons of questions

  147. running through their minds.

  148. But the question they ask

  149. is not

  150. to do with

  151. exactly how all this will happen,

  152. but they say,

  153. Jesus, when?

  154. When will this happen

  155. and what are the signs

  156. of its coming?

  157. You see that in verse 7.

  158. When will these things happen?

  159. And Jesus answers their question

  160. and tells them

  161. the first sign

  162. of the coming kingdom of God.

  163. The first sign

  164. that the kingdom of God

  165. is coming

  166. is that false teachers

  167. will rise up

  168. and claim

  169. that they are Jesus.

  170. They will claim

  171. that they are sent

  172. by God

  173. and Jesus says

  174. in verse 8,

  175. watch out.

  176. Do not be deceived.

  177. Do not follow them.

  178. Now we might sit here today

  179. and think,

  180. well, obviously.

  181. If someone stands

  182. on the corner

  183. of the street

  184. and shouts

  185. that they are God's king

  186. and that God's kingdom

  187. is coming,

  188. we're not going to

  189. believe them, are we?

  190. But put yourself

  191. in the shoes

  192. of the disciples.

  193. In just a few days,

  194. their teacher,

  195. their Lord,

  196. their friend,

  197. is going to be crucified.

  198. Once he is resurrected

  199. and with the Father,

  200. they will be looking

  201. for Jesus' return.

  202. They will be eagerly

  203. expecting him

  204. to come back.

  205. And so Jesus warns them,

  206. says, watch out.

  207. People will come

  208. and they will try

  209. to divert your attention

  210. from the kingdom of God.

  211. They will try to pull you

  212. away from me.

  213. Watch out,

  214. Jesus says.

  215. One of the signs

  216. of the coming kingdom

  217. of God

  218. is that false messiahs

  219. will appear

  220. and try to distract you

  221. from God.

  222. Do not be deceived,

  223. Jesus says.

  224. Do not follow them.

  225. Are we watching out?

  226. And we sit here

  227. this morning

  228. around 2,000 years

  229. away from the events

  230. described here.

  231. But the warning

  232. to watch out

  233. is just as true today

  234. as it was back then.

  235. King Jesus

  236. has not yet returned.

  237. We are still waiting

  238. for God's kingdom

  239. to come in its fullness.

  240. And so like the disciples,

  241. we have to watch out.

  242. We need to pay attention

  243. to the things

  244. that we read,

  245. to the things

  246. that we listen to,

  247. to the things

  248. that we allow access

  249. to influence

  250. our hearts and minds.

  251. Now the internet

  252. is a wonderful thing.

  253. I love the internet.

  254. I really do.

  255. Not just for the cat videos,

  256. but for everything else.

  257. It gives you access

  258. to some wonderful resources,

  259. great sermons,

  260. great books,

  261. great articles,

  262. great podcasts,

  263. you name it.

  264. But it also has things

  265. that aren't helpful,

  266. things that can be

  267. quite dangerous.

  268. Just like the temple,

  269. on the surface,

  270. it all looks fine.

  271. But if you dig around

  272. a little bit,

  273. you'll find that

  274. it is not fine at all.

  275. It is just as deceitful

  276. as the hearts

  277. that are currently

  278. worshipping in the temple.

  279. We need to watch out

  280. and not be deceived.

  281. Do not listen to those

  282. who speak of themselves

  283. as more than mere people.

  284. Do not listen to those

  285. who proclaim

  286. that they have

  287. a greater knowledge

  288. of God's kingdom

  289. or of God's timing.

  290. Be careful

  291. and watch out

  292. for those

  293. who proclaim

  294. Jesus plus something

  295. equals salvation.

  296. Because the truth is

  297. that Jesus plus anything

  298. equals wrong.

  299. Jesus is everything.

  300. Jesus is all.

  301. And we need to watch out.

  302. Jesus says,

  303. do not be deceived

  304. and do not follow them.

  305. The King will come back

  306. and if we trust in Him,

  307. if we are at peace

  308. with Him,

  309. we will be in His arms

  310. and His comfort

  311. will be with us.

  312. We need to watch out.

  313. And the second thing

  314. that this departing King says

  315. is that His disciples

  316. need to stand firm.

  317. In verses 9 to 24,

  318. stand firm.

  319. The disciples need to stand firm

  320. in light of different signs

  321. of the coming kingdom of God.

  322. these signs are

  323. wars and disasters,

  324. the destruction of Jerusalem

  325. and persecution.

  326. And in light of all of these signs,

  327. Jesus says in verse 19,

  328. stand firm.

  329. In verses 9 to 11,

  330. you see Jesus saying

  331. that they are to stand firm

  332. in light of wars and disasters

  333. that will come upon the earth.

  334. Jesus is explaining

  335. some of the terrifying events

  336. that will happen.

  337. But He doesn't say this

  338. so that they can speculate

  339. as to when the kingdom of God

  340. is coming.

  341. He says this to encourage them

  342. because all of these events,

  343. as terrible and terrifying

  344. as they are,

  345. they are pointing to the great event

  346. of the King's return.

  347. These are the signs

  348. which will affect the whole world.

  349. But in verse 9,

  350. Jesus encourages His disciples

  351. and says,

  352. do not be frightened.

  353. Can you see the tenderness

  354. of Jesus?

  355. Even though He is predicting

  356. times of difficulty,

  357. He looks at His disciples

  358. and says,

  359. don't be scared.

  360. This is the Son of God

  361. who is speaking.

  362. This is the one

  363. through whom

  364. the whole world

  365. was creating.

  366. He knows what's going to happen.

  367. He knows the end result.

  368. These wars,

  369. yes,

  370. they will be painful.

  371. Yes,

  372. they will destroy people

  373. and places.

  374. But Jesus knows

  375. they will not last forever

  376. because the King will come

  377. victorious

  378. and there will be

  379. no more crying,

  380. no more pain

  381. and God will dwell

  382. with His people.

  383. And until then,

  384. there will be wars

  385. and disasters.

  386. But do not be frightened

  387. because these wars

  388. will not hinder

  389. the kingdom of God.

  390. and nor will the kingdom

  391. of God delay.

  392. God is working

  393. according to His perfect timing,

  394. according to His perfect plan

  395. which no war can foil,

  396. which no person can mess up.

  397. God's plan will be accomplished.

  398. And then in verses 20 to 24,

  399. Jesus is speaking about the signs

  400. that will befall Jerusalem.

  401. Now we've seen this before,

  402. haven't we?

  403. Again,

  404. in chapter 19,

  405. Jesus has warned Jerusalem

  406. of their coming judgment

  407. for how they've rejected God.

  408. In verse 22,

  409. if you look down,

  410. you'll see it says,

  411. for this is the time

  412. of punishment

  413. in fulfillment

  414. of all that has been written.

  415. God has been warning

  416. the people of Israel

  417. for hundreds

  418. and hundreds of years

  419. that they need to repent

  420. and turn to Him.

  421. God has been patiently waiting

  422. and calling them back

  423. to Himself,

  424. but they have not listened.

  425. They have continued

  426. in their lives of rebellion,

  427. but now,

  428. Jesus says,

  429. the time of fulfillment

  430. has come.

  431. Judgment is coming.

  432. Now if we look back

  433. in history,

  434. we can see that this judgment

  435. came in 70 AD

  436. as the Romans march in

  437. and destroy Jerusalem.

  438. Jesus is warning

  439. His disciples

  440. of what is going to happen.

  441. He is telling them

  442. that they need

  443. to stand firm.

  444. Jerusalem,

  445. you need to stop

  446. putting your confidence

  447. in this temple.

  448. Stop putting your confidence

  449. in a building.

  450. Instead,

  451. focus on the King Jesus.

  452. The glory of a temple

  453. is nothing

  454. compared to the King

  455. who will return one day.

  456. and all people

  457. will see His power

  458. and His majestic glory.

  459. Sandwiched in between

  460. the wars

  461. and the destruction

  462. of Jerusalem

  463. is the third sign

  464. which points

  465. to the return

  466. of the King.

  467. Verses 12 to 19,

  468. Jesus explains

  469. that the disciples

  470. will be persecuted.

  471. And in light

  472. of all of this,

  473. in verse 19,

  474. Jesus says,

  475. stand firm.

  476. Jesus is laying out

  477. the difficult truths

  478. about the cost

  479. of being a Christian.

  480. They will be persecuted,

  481. betrayed,

  482. taken to court

  483. and some of them

  484. will be killed.

  485. Why is all of this

  486. happening?

  487. Why?

  488. Verses 12 and 17,

  489. Jesus says twice

  490. that all of this

  491. is happening

  492. because of His name.

  493. Jesus tells His disciples

  494. that they will be

  495. taken to court.

  496. They will be imprisoned.

  497. They will be betrayed

  498. by family members

  499. and friends,

  500. even put to death.

  501. Why?

  502. Verse 17,

  503. because this world

  504. hates me,

  505. Jesus says.

  506. Whilst these horrendous

  507. acts affect the disciples,

  508. the truth is

  509. that they are actually

  510. an attack

  511. on Jesus Himself.

  512. Imagine the fear

  513. of the disciples

  514. when they hear

  515. these things.

  516. It's not like

  517. the departing king

  518. is giving them

  519. a nice to-do list.

  520. Make sure the grass

  521. is cut when I'm gone.

  522. Make sure the grounds

  523. are kept neat

  524. and tidy.

  525. Make sure the people

  526. of my house

  527. are kept happy,

  528. healthy and well fed.

  529. No.

  530. Jesus is saying,

  531. in my absence

  532. you will be mistreated.

  533. You will be hated

  534. and looked down on

  535. all because of me.

  536. You can imagine

  537. the disciples asking

  538. in their minds,

  539. can't you,

  540. Jesus,

  541. what is the point?

  542. Why are you going

  543. to let all this happen?

  544. In verse 13,

  545. Jesus says,

  546. all of this will happen

  547. but you will be

  548. bearing witness

  549. of me.

  550. The way you

  551. conduct yourselves,

  552. the stands

  553. that you take

  554. for me,

  555. the way you act

  556. in front of your

  557. persecutors,

  558. all of it

  559. will bear witness

  560. to my name.

  561. The way you live

  562. and show

  563. what the gospel

  564. really is.

  565. All of this

  566. is an opportunity

  567. for you to tell people

  568. about me,

  569. Jesus says.

  570. All of this

  571. is not meaningless

  572. but it is pointing

  573. to me,

  574. the future king

  575. who will return.

  576. Now,

  577. I know that

  578. for some of us

  579. this morning

  580. this is a very

  581. live situation.

  582. Maybe you've

  583. come from a week

  584. at work

  585. in the office

  586. or at home

  587. and you've been

  588. struggling on account

  589. of your faith

  590. in Jesus.

  591. You've had to

  592. take a stand

  593. for something

  594. because of what

  595. you believe.

  596. Listen to Jesus

  597. as he encourages

  598. you through his

  599. word that none

  600. of it is in vain.

  601. In all the

  602. difficulties of

  603. living life

  604. as a Christian

  605. in a world

  606. that hates Jesus,

  607. we are bearing

  608. witness to him.

  609. In all of this

  610. stand firm,

  611. Jesus says.

  612. In verse 14

  613. we see the

  614. fourth and final

  615. do not statement.

  616. Follow along

  617. with me.

  618. In verse 8

  619. you see

  620. do not be

  621. deceived,

  622. do not follow

  623. them.

  624. In verse 9

  625. do not be

  626. frightened of

  627. the wars

  628. and disasters

  629. and in verse 14

  630. Jesus says

  631. do not worry.

  632. How can Jesus

  633. say this

  634. in light of

  635. all of these

  636. things?

  637. Well,

  638. verse 15

  639. the amazing

  640. promise that

  641. is there.

  642. Jesus says

  643. you don't have

  644. to worry

  645. because I

  646. will be with

  647. you.

  648. Jesus isn't

  649. going to leave

  650. his disciples

  651. empty handed.

  652. He isn't

  653. going away

  654. and leaving

  655. them to their

  656. own devices.

  657. No,

  658. Jesus says

  659. I will be

  660. with you.

  661. That is why

  662. you do not

  663. have to

  664. worry.

  665. Do not

  666. worry about

  667. what you

  668. are going

  669. to say

  670. because I

  671. will give

  672. you the

  673. words to

  674. say when

  675. the time

  676. is right.

  677. I will

  678. give you

  679. the wisdom

  680. that you

  681. need so

  682. that your

  683. enemies,

  684. so that

  685. my enemies

  686. will not

  687. be able to

  688. contradict or

  689. resist you.

  690. In all of

  691. this,

  692. Jesus says,

  693. stand firm

  694. and not a

  695. hair on your

  696. head will

  697. perish,

  698. Jesus says

  699. in verse

  700. 18.

  701. Now this

  702. doesn't mean

  703. that the

  704. disciples won't

  705. die.

  706. Jesus has

  707. just told

  708. them in

  709. verse 16

  710. that they

  711. will,

  712. but it

  713. means that

  714. Jesus is

  715. offering them

  716. a greater

  717. protection,

  718. a more

  719. important

  720. protection,

  721. the protection

  722. of their

  723. souls.

  724. The worst

  725. thing that

  726. your persecutors

  727. can do,

  728. Jesus says,

  729. is they

  730. can kill

  731. your body.

  732. That's it.

  733. They cannot

  734. harm your

  735. soul.

  736. Your soul

  737. is protected

  738. by God.

  739. Stand firm

  740. and you

  741. will win

  742. life.

  743. As you

  744. stand firm,

  745. Jesus says,

  746. you are

  747. bearing witness

  748. to me,

  749. living in a

  750. world which

  751. hates me.

  752. Remember

  753. all the

  754. time that

  755. your soul

  756. is hiding

  757. in the

  758. protection of

  759. the king.

  760. Richard

  761. Wurmbrand

  762. is a

  763. practical

  764. example of

  765. what it

  766. looks like

  767. to stand

  768. in light,

  769. to stand

  770. firm in

  771. persecution.

  772. For those

  773. of you who've

  774. never heard

  775. of him,

  776. he was a

  777. Romanian

  778. pastor who

  779. spoke out

  780. against the

  781. communist

  782. government as

  783. they tried to

  784. control the

  785. church in

  786. Romania.

  787. He was

  788. imprisoned and

  789. tortured for

  790. 14 years

  791. because of

  792. his outspokenness

  793. and his

  794. illegal work

  795. with the

  796. underground

  797. churches in

  798. Romania.

  799. and he

  800. has to

  801. say this

  802. about

  803. standing

  804. firm in

  805. Jesus in

  806. his book

  807. Tortured

  808. for Christ.

  809. I

  810. tremble

  811. because of

  812. the sufferings

  813. of those

  814. persecuted in

  815. different lands.

  816. In the

  817. depth of

  818. my heart,

  819. I would

  820. like to

  821. keep the

  822. beauty of

  823. my own

  824. vineyard,

  825. to not

  826. be involved

  827. in such

  828. a huge

  829. fight.

  830. I would

  831. like so

  832. much to

  833. be somewhere

  834. in quietness

  835. and rest,

  836. but it is

  837. not possible.

  838. the quietness

  839. and rest

  840. for which I

  841. long would

  842. be an escape

  843. from reality

  844. and dangerous

  845. for my soul.

  846. Richard is

  847. saying that

  848. yes, we can

  849. shy away from

  850. standing up for

  851. Jesus, but that

  852. is dangerous

  853. and it is

  854. detached from

  855. reality.

  856. Instead, Jesus

  857. is calling us to

  858. a life of

  859. sacrifice as we

  860. face a world

  861. which hates

  862. him and as a

  863. result of that

  864. hatred will

  865. persecute us.

  866. Jesus

  867. says, stand

  868. firm to

  869. his disciples.

  870. Are we

  871. standing firm

  872. this morning?

  873. As we

  874. live in a

  875. world which

  876. hates Jesus,

  877. which persecutes

  878. and judges

  879. Christians because

  880. of their faith,

  881. are we taking

  882. a stand?

  883. Are we

  884. representing

  885. Jesus?

  886. This is the

  887. cost of being

  888. a Christian.

  889. You will be

  890. hated.

  891. We will be

  892. rejected and

  893. despised.

  894. We will be

  895. judged and

  896. persecuted, but

  897. not because of

  898. ourselves, but

  899. because of who

  900. we serve.

  901. What might it

  902. look like for

  903. us to stand

  904. firm?

  905. For some of

  906. us it might be

  907. a very public

  908. thing because

  909. we're naturally

  910. in the public

  911. eye.

  912. For others it

  913. might mean not

  914. joining in with

  915. something or not

  916. encouraging something

  917. within our

  918. families.

  919. In any case,

  920. for each and

  921. every one of us

  922. this definitely

  923. means that in

  924. all situations,

  925. in all

  926. circumstances,

  927. we are to

  928. bear witness

  929. to Jesus.

  930. And we are

  931. to take every

  932. opportunity to

  933. explain why we

  934. are different.

  935. Our obligation

  936. is to God,

  937. not to this

  938. world.

  939. Our duty is to

  940. serve the

  941. King, the one

  942. who protects

  943. our souls,

  944. not to serve

  945. people who can

  946. only destroy

  947. our bodies.

  948. Take courage

  949. in the promise

  950. of verse 15.

  951. Jesus is with

  952. you.

  953. The King of

  954. this universe

  955. is on your

  956. side.

  957. The hands

  958. which created

  959. and sustained

  960. the whole world,

  961. the God whose

  962. power spoke

  963. this very world

  964. into being,

  965. is with you.

  966. In all of the

  967. persecution that

  968. we suffer now,

  969. or that we will

  970. suffer in the

  971. future as a

  972. result of our

  973. faith in Jesus,

  974. stand firm.

  975. So we are to

  976. watch out.

  977. We are to

  978. stand firm.

  979. And then Jesus

  980. tells his

  981. disciples in

  982. verses 25 to

  983. 38 that they

  984. are to look up.

  985. 25 to 38,

  986. look up.

  987. So Jesus is

  988. telling his

  989. disciples about

  990. all of these

  991. signs that

  992. will come,

  993. but not so

  994. that they can

  995. speculate as to

  996. the timing of

  997. the King's

  998. return.

  999. Instead,

  1000. he's telling

  1001. them all of

  1002. these things so

  1003. that they can

  1004. remember,

  1005. even though he

  1006. is gone,

  1007. he's coming

  1008. back.

  1009. All of these

  1010. signs are

  1011. pointers to

  1012. the King's

  1013. return,

  1014. but the

  1015. question remains,

  1016. how will

  1017. Jesus return?

  1018. Well, look at

  1019. the marvelous

  1020. description that

  1021. we see in

  1022. verse 27.

  1023. Jesus will

  1024. return coming

  1025. in a cloud

  1026. with power

  1027. and with

  1028. great glory.

  1029. Jesus'

  1030. return will

  1031. not be a

  1032. secret event

  1033. hidden from

  1034. the world,

  1035. but all will

  1036. see him as

  1037. he comes.

  1038. And on that

  1039. day, all

  1040. people will

  1041. acknowledge his

  1042. power and

  1043. his glory.

  1044. When Jesus

  1045. entered Jerusalem

  1046. in chapter 19,

  1047. we looked at

  1048. this a few

  1049. weeks ago,

  1050. he entered the

  1051. city on the

  1052. back of a

  1053. donkey.

  1054. But when

  1055. he returns,

  1056. there will

  1057. be no

  1058. mistake about

  1059. who Jesus

  1060. is, because

  1061. his power and

  1062. his glory will

  1063. be on display.

  1064. The rightful

  1065. King will

  1066. return with

  1067. true authority,

  1068. with glory and

  1069. sovereign power.

  1070. All nations

  1071. and peoples from

  1072. every language

  1073. will gather and

  1074. worship him.

  1075. His dominion is

  1076. everlasting and

  1077. his kingdom will

  1078. never, ever be

  1079. destroyed.

  1080. This is God's

  1081. King and this

  1082. is how he will

  1083. return.

  1084. But notice the

  1085. two responses to

  1086. Jesus' return in

  1087. verses 26 and

  1088. 28.

  1089. In verse 26,

  1090. you see some

  1091. people who will

  1092. be terrified as

  1093. they see the

  1094. King returning.

  1095. And then in

  1096. verse 28, you

  1097. see some people

  1098. who will welcome

  1099. the King.

  1100. They will stand

  1101. up, lift up

  1102. their heads and

  1103. rejoice because

  1104. their redemption

  1105. is drawing near.

  1106. These are the

  1107. two responses

  1108. to Jesus.

  1109. If people

  1110. reject Jesus,

  1111. if they don't

  1112. believe in him

  1113. and have faith

  1114. in him,

  1115. then when he

  1116. returns they

  1117. will be afraid

  1118. of the coming

  1119. judgment.

  1120. God will

  1121. be

  1122. and have faith in

  1123. Jesus.

  1124. They will rejoice

  1125. because he is

  1126. returning to reign

  1127. over his people

  1128. and we will be

  1129. completely reconciled

  1130. with God.

  1131. That is the great

  1132. news of our

  1133. returning King.

  1134. They will rejoice

  1135. because their

  1136. redemption, their

  1137. salvation will be

  1138. complete.

  1139. God will dwell with

  1140. them and we will

  1141. dwell with God.

  1142. these are the two

  1143. reactions to the

  1144. King.

  1145. How will you react

  1146. this morning?

  1147. Will you rejoice

  1148. because your King

  1149. is coming or will

  1150. you tremble because

  1151. judgment is coming?

  1152. Your response is not

  1153. insignificant but it

  1154. has eternal

  1155. implications.

  1156. Your response to

  1157. Jesus affects your

  1158. eternal state before

1159. God so please let me

  1160. ask you how will

  1161. you react at

  1162. Jesus' return.

  1163. In verses 29 to

  1164. 31 Jesus tells

  1165. them a story so

  1166. that people can

  1167. understand everything

  1168. he has been saying

  1169. in this chapter.

1170. He says just as the

  1171. leaves of a tree

  1172. indicate that summer

  1173. is coming, that

  1174. summer is just

  1175. around the corner,

  1176. all of these events

  1177. in verses 8 to

  1178. 28 are signs of

  1179. the return of the

  1180. King.

  1181. And in verses 32

  1182. and 33 Jesus

  1183. says these signs

  1184. will take place

  1185. almost imminently

  1186. but the return of

  1187. Jesus will come

  1188. one day.

  1189. There will be a

  1190. time of waiting.

  1191. These signs will

  1192. start as soon as

  1193. Jesus departs and

  1194. they will continue

  1195. until he returns.

  1196. That's what Jesus

  1197. means when he says

  1198. that surely this

  1199. generation will not

  1200. pass away until

  1201. these things happen.

  1202. Jesus says this

  1203. world will pass

  1204. away.

  1205. It will be

  1206. destroyed but the

  1207. words of God,

  1208. the words of God's

  1209. Son will not pass

  1210. away nor will they

  1211. lose their power or

  1212. their meaning but

  1213. they will last

  1214. forever.

  1215. God's word is

  1216. everlasting.

  1217. The promises that

  1218. Jesus is making in

  1219. this passage from

  1220. this morning, they

  1221. will not pass away.

  1222. the promises that

  1223. he will be with

  1224. his disciples, the

  1225. promise that he

  1226. will protect his

  1227. disciples, they are

  1228. everlasting and just

  1229. as true today as

  1230. they were then.

1231. And in light of all

  1232. of this, in verses

  1233. 34 and 35, Jesus

  1234. reminds his disciples

1235. to look up and have

  1236. their focus on him.

1237. In light of all of

  1238. these events and signs

  1239. of the coming

  1240. kingdom of God,

  1241. they need to be

  1242. careful.

  1243. They need to pay

  1244. attention.

  1245. Watch and pray,

  1246. Jesus says, because

  1247. the king's return will

  1248. come suddenly.

  1249. And these signs are

  1250. already happening.

  1251. Watch and pray that

1252. you will be found in

  1253. faith and able to

  1254. stand at the coming

  1255. of the king.

  1256. Jesus is saying,

1257. don't get caught up in

  1258. the things of this

  1259. world but have your

  1260. gaze fixed on me.

  1261. They are to remain

  1262. faithful until he

  1263. returns.

  1264. And each day, people

  1265. gather to hear Jesus

  1266. speak in the temple.

  1267. People come day after

1268. day to listen to Jesus

  1269. but the question is,

1270. does it seep into their

  1271. hearts?

  1272. Or are they listening

  1273. but not understanding?

  1274. Are we looking up?

  1275. Are we eagerly

  1276. expecting the return

  1277. of our glorious

  1278. king?

  1279. Which reaction will we

  1280. have when King Jesus

  1281. returns?

  1282. Will you have the

  1283. first reaction of

  1284. people in verse 26

  1285. who listen to Jesus

  1286. every day in the

  1287. temple but who never

1288. came to believe in him?

1289. Or will you be like

1290. those in verse 28 who

  1291. are waiting and who

  1292. are rejoicing when

  1293. the king returns?

  1294. This is an important

  1295. question.

  1296. Without Jesus, there

1297. is no hope for today

1298. and there is no hope

  1299. for the future.

  1300. Your response to

  1301. Jesus is the most

  1302. important thing in the

  1303. world.

  1304. If you've never thought

  1305. about it in these

  1306. terms, please this

  1307. morning, think about

  1308. it.

  1309. Consider Jesus, the

  1310. king.

  1311. Do not leave without

  1312. thinking about your

  1313. state before God

  1314. this morning.

  1315. How will you

  1316. respond?

  1317. Turn to Jesus, find

  1318. true hope and

  1319. lasting confidence

  1320. which can only be

  1321. found in him.

  1322. As Christians, we

  1323. have a certain hope

  1324. and a certain future

  1325. with Jesus.

  1326. As the well-known

  1327. evangelist Billy Graham

  1328. says when he expresses

1329. his hope in Jesus, he

  1330. says this,

  1331. Someday you will hear

  1332. or read that Billy

  1333. Graham is dead.

  1334. Don't you believe a

  1335. word of it?

  1336. I shall be more

1337. alive than I am now.

  1338. I will just have

  1339. changed my address.

1340. I will have gone into

  1341. the presence of God.

  1342. This is the confidence

  1343. that Christians have in

  1344. the returning king.

1345. Do you share that same

  1346. confidence that your soul

1347. is at rest with God?

1348. If you can say that

  1349. with Billy Graham,

  1350. are you shaping your

  1351. life around the king's

  1352. return?

1353. Is your life built on

  1354. anticipation that Jesus

  1355. is coming back?

1356. Are we living the life

1357. that Jesus is asking us

1358. to and calling us to in

  1359. this passage?

1360. As we draw to a close

  1361. this morning, let me

1362. encourage us all to heed

  1363. the departing words of

  1364. the returning king.

1365. Let us watch out for the

1366. things that would seek to

  1367. distract us from God.

1368. Let us keep our gaze fixed

  1369. on him.

1370. Let us stand firm in the

  1371. knowledge that all the

1372. attacks that we face are

1373. not on us, but they are on

  1374. Jesus.

1375. They are because of who

  1376. we serve.

1377. And let us see them as an

  1378. opportunity to bear witness

1379. to him, the king who

1380. promises to be with us.

1381. And let us look up.

1382. Let us keep our eyes fixed

  1383. on our returning king.

1384. And let us have confidence

1385. that we will be with him

  1386. forever.

  1387. Let us pray together.

  1388. Heavenly Father, we thank

1389. you that you have not left

1390. us to our own devices, but

1391. that you have promised to be

1392. with us in all of the

  1393. difficulties of our lives.

1394. We ask, Lord, that you'd be

1395. with us this week as we put

1396. into practice what your word

1397. has been challenging us on.

  1398. Help us watch out.

  1399. Help us stand firm.

1400. And help us look up.

1401. In all of this, remembering

1402. that we are living for your

1403. glory as we eagerly await the

1404. day of your triumphal entry.

1405. We pray all of this in the

  1406. holy, powerful, and precious

1407. name of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  1408. Amen.
