  1. Thank you so much. Beautifully read. Well, good morning again, everybody. I bring you the warm greetings of your sisters and brothers at Harper Church and Christianity Explored Ministries.

  2. And they are praying for us today as we gather around this passage. It's a fantastic passage. Please do turn in your Bible with me to that passage.

  3. Which your pastor's a bit of a bandit. I was sitting in Belfast Airport on Thursday and decided, right, I've got a flight delay.

  4. Now's a chance to crack on a bit with Luke 22. So I started doing my prep and I thought, I'll just make sure I've got the passage right.

  5. So I sent him a text saying, Graham, just to be clear, Luke 22, 39 to 65. Is that right? By reply.

  6. Oh, mate, you're kidding. No, you're on Job 7. And then and then we only kidding.

  7. So I've dished that one out a few times myself, so it was good to get it back.

  8. But this is an amazing text. It is great to be in the time of year, isn't it?

  9. And I guarantee you've said this already this morning or last week as you were coming home.

  10. The time of year when the day's beginning to lengthen. On your way home at night, will you not say to people, look at that, it's 20 past 6 and it's light.

  11. Or in the morning if you're up early, look at that, it's just back at 6 and it's light already.

  12. It's great to be at that time of year.

  13. But as we turn to Luke 22 this morning, we are descending into darkness.

  14. Jesus said to those who came to arrest him in verse 53,

  15. When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness.

  16. And I want to take that as a title for our study this morning, the power of darkness.

  17. There are essentially two things I want us to think about, but of course there's going to be subheadings.

  18. So there's about 15 things.

  19. But we'll try and condense it to two main things as we look at it together.

  20. Number one, the depths of this darkness.

  21. And then in a few moments, the defeat of this darkness.

  22. So first of all, the depths of this darkness.

  23. Let's just try and get our bearings on the big biblical picture.

  24. Because from the beginning of his revelation of himself to us, our God is a God of light.

  25. The first words ever recorded of God are, let there be light as he banishes physical darkness.

  26. Gloriously.

  27. But we quickly find in the book of Genesis that the created order experiences spiritual darkness.

  28. And it comes along when God's word is denied in chapter 3 of Genesis and when it's disobeyed.

  29. And so spiritual darkness, as we talk about it, to give it a proper definition, is basically rebellion against God, rebellion against his word, rebellion against his ways.

  30. And the arch rebel, Satan, and all his efforts are channeled into rebelling and to bringing about rebellion.

  31. That's why we read in verse 47 about Judas' betrayal of Jesus.

  32. Because before we get to that, we read in verse 3 of our chapter that Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the number of the twelve.

  33. And he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.

  34. And they were glad, verse 5 tells us, and agreed to give him money.

  35. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

  36. I find these words at the beginning of chapter 22 that tease up our passage this morning, I find them quite chilling.

  37. That there is a gladness in deep darkness.

  38. That there is a celebration in deep darkness.

  39. The authorities couldn't legally arrest Jesus, so now they're glad they celebrate the dark deal done with Judas.

  40. And Judas himself has had a long-term problem managing his love of money.

  41. You know, well, I'm sure 1 Timothy 6.10 famously confirms what we see here, that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

  42. And that's what we see worked out in Judas' life.

  43. John 12 recounts for us that occasion when Mary poured the expensive ointment in the feet of the Lord Jesus.

  44. And Judas Iscariot complained.

  45. He said, why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?

  46. And John adds, he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.

  47. And having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put in it.

  48. That's a way at the beginning of the adventures of the Lord Jesus Christ with his disciples.

  49. You've gone right through Luke's gospel.

  50. Do you remember in Luke 11.35, Jesus says, when the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness?

  51. When the light that is in you is darkness, then the addiction to money feels good.

  52. And ripping Jesus off is nothing in comparison to the joy and the satisfaction that the money you'll get promises you.

  53. And when you're a person like that, and in the presence of the Lord Jesus, and hearing all that he has to say,

  54. and totally unaffected by it, you're only there to hold the money bag,

  55. you're only there to pretend to be one of the disciples so that you can rip them off.

  56. When you behave like that for long enough, one day you'll find yourself capable not only of ripping Jesus off,

  57. but selling Jesus off.

  58. Capable of betraying the Lord of life.

  59. And not only betraying him, but betraying him for money and betraying him with a kiss.

  60. So verse 47.

  61. While he was still speaking, there came a crowd.

  62. And the man called Judas, one of the twelve was leading them.

  63. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him.

  64. Here's the depths of the darkness.

  65. Not only does he love money more than people,

  66. not only does he use a sign of love as a means of betrayal,

  67. but when the Lord tries to snap him back into reality,

  68. Judas is powerless to see sense.

  69. He can't stop himself.

  70. Look at verse 48 with me.

  71. Jesus said to him,

  72. Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?

  73. What a moment that was for Judas.

  74. The Lord Jesus looks him straight in the face and says,

  75. Judas.

  76. So he names him Judas.

  77. And he names his crime, would you betray?

  78. And he names his victim, the Son of Man.

  79. And he names his means with a kiss.

  80. But the darkness has overwhelmed Judas.

  81. And although he's been helping himself to the money,

  82. he cannot help himself now.

  83. He looks into the eyes of Jesus,

  84. who knows exactly what Judas is doing.

  85. And he goes ahead and executes his betrayal.

  86. For Judas, the depth of darkness is to hear Jesus question,

  87. Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?

  88. And for Judas to think in effect,

  89. Nevertheless, Jesus, not your will, but mine be done.

  90. But we don't just see exceptional rebellion in this text,

  91. as we see with Judas.

  92. We also see typical rebellion in Peter.

  93. The incident here with Peter is the story of a follower of Jesus

  94. who, unlike Judas, was determined to do well.

  95. So how did Peter end up, as we heard read to us there so helpfully,

  96. weeping bitterly, full of regrets,

  97. having on three instances denied that he even knew Jesus?

  98. Well, we're going to slow the pace slightly now,

  99. and I want us to take a little bit more time over Peter

  100. as we trace how the darkness overwhelmed him,

  101. and maybe compare notes with Peter

  102. and see some parallels from our own experience.

  103. I want to notice, I think, four things.

  104. Notice, first of all, the problem with Peter

  105. was his personal confidence.

  106. We see with both Judas and Peter

  107. that the behavior of these men is not just human frailty.

  108. There is profound spiritual darkness at work.

  109. Have a look back to chapter 22, verse 31.

  110. Jesus said,

  111. Now, can you imagine the Lord Jesus saying that to you?

  112. Saying your name twice with a sense of urgency and saying,

  113. Now, look, here's the issue.

  114. Satan has demanded to have you.

  115. Would that not make you very cautious?

  116. Would that not make you extraordinarily careful?

  117. But there doesn't seem to be much of that with Peter,

  118. verse 33.

  119. Lord, I'm ready to go with you,

  120. both to prison and to death.

  121. And Jesus said,

  122. I tell you, Peter the cock will not crow this day

  123. until you deny three times that you know me.

  124. There's Peter imagining that imprisonment and death

  125. won't be able to prize him from Jesus' side.

  126. And yet Jesus knows and tells him

  127. that before the night is out,

  128. Peter will deny even knowing Jesus.

  129. So his first problem is his personal confidence,

  130. his ability to make promises to Jesus

  131. about his love and commitment and faithfulness to him.

  132. His second problem is what we might call his willful disobedience.

  133. Just try and track the deterioration with me here.

  134. At this point,

  135. there is still strength to be found for Peter.

  136. Jesus has a strategy to stop his followers

  137. being overwhelmed by darkness.

  138. He has prayed for Peter.

  139. He has warned Peter.

  140. And now at the beginning of our particular section,

  141. in verse 39,

  142. as Jesus came out and went,

  143. as was his custom,

  144. to the Mount of Olives,

  145. and the disciples followed him,

  146. and when he came to the place,

  147. he said to them,

  148. pray that you may not enter into temptation.

  149. And temptation can mean either temptation to sin

  150. or meaning a time of severe trial and testing.

  151. And the Lord Jesus knew about the power of darkness.

  152. He saw it as a clear and present danger.

  153. And he says to the disciples,

  154. pray that you will not enter into either temptation to sin

  155. or a severe time of trial and testing

  156. that will lead to temptation to sin.

  157. Again,

  158. because you know your way through Luke's gospel,

  159. back in chapter 11,

  160. verse 4,

  161. in what we call the Lord's Prayer,

  162. he gave an example.

  163. He taught his disciples that they ought to pray,

  164. lead us not into temptation.

  165. And Jesus wanted his disciples to acknowledge,

  166. as we pray to our Heavenly Father,

  167. on a routine basis,

  168. that we are not personally able to stand in the hour of trial.

  169. It's the opposite of what Peter felt with his self-confidence.

  170. The Lord Jesus wants us on our faces every day,

  171. saying,

  172. Lord,

  173. we will not stand in the hour of trial.

  174. That's the point of that clause.

  175. And you may recall that Jesus had also

  176. precisely warned them about this in chapter 21.

  177. Have a quick look back to verse 33 of chapter 21.

  178. He says,

  179. Heaven and earth will pass away,

  180. but my words will not pass away.

  181. But watch yourselves,

  182. lest your hearts be weighed down

  183. with dissipation and drunkenness

  184. and cares of this life,

  185. and that a day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

  186. He couldn't have been clearer

  187. as he prepared his disciples

  188. for the hour of severe trial and test.

  189. And now,

  190. on the Mount of Olives,

  191. he gives them a straightforward instruction.

  192. Pray.

  193. Go and pray.

  194. And Jesus himself went and prayed.

  195. That was a straightforward instruction.

  196. But there's no record of Peter

  197. and any of the other disciples doing so.

  198. In fact,

  199. our chapter 22,

  200. verse 45,

  201. when he rose from prayer,

  202. Jesus rose from prayer

  203. and came to the disciples,

  204. he found them sleeping for sorrow.

  205. And he said to them,

  206. Why are you sleeping?

  207. Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.

  208. The problem of personal confidence,

  209. the problem of willful obedience,

  210. Jesus has told them to go and pray.

  211. He's told them to go and acknowledge

  212. they're in dangerous times

  213. and he didn't do it.

  214. I wonder,

  215. do you see yourself here as I see myself?

  216. I have no doubt

  217. that the failing to obey Jesus' commandment

  218. to pray

  219. is the unquestionable source

  220. of my failure

  221. in many times of tests and trials.

  222. Just rank,

  223. willful disobedience.

  224. Think about it.

  225. What we're seeing about the Lord's prayer.

  226. He's given us a model of prayer

  227. whereby we acknowledge every day

  228. our need of forgiveness

  229. and our need of provision

  230. and our spiritual frailty

  231. before our Father.

  232. Lead us not into temptation.

  233. Lord, don't let the road be

  234. a road of trial and testing

  235. because I will not stand in it

  236. by myself.

  237. We're meant to know that about ourselves.

  238. We're meant to say that

  239. to our Heavenly Father.

  240. And yet,

  241. how often on the wrong side

  242. of a spiritual car crash

  243. do we sit,

  244. you know,

  245. head in hands

  246. reflecting on how we just

  247. barreled into the day

  248. blind to the spiritual danger

  249. we may face

  250. through an unfounded sense

  251. of spiritual confidence

  252. and through willful disobedience,

  253. neglectful disobedience

  254. in prayer.

  255. Third thing we see,

  256. we notice,

  257. is Peter's careful distance.

  258. Verse 54 of our section

  259. this morning,

  260. Then they seized him

  261. and led him away,

  262. bringing him

  263. to the high priest's house.

  264. And Peter was following

  265. at a distance.

  266. Well, good on him

  267. that he followed at all.

  268. But the detail

  269. that Luke records

  270. of the distance

  271. that Peter kept

  272. between him and Jesus

  273. is very significant.

  274. It points at least,

  275. do you not think,

  276. to a subconscious,

  277. cautious self-preservation.

  278. Peter was following

  279. at a distance.

  280. Can we notice this morning

  281. how quickly

  282. the situation changed?

  283. Seeing Jesus

  284. being taken into custody,

  285. seeing Jesus

  286. offering no resistance,

  287. has changed

  288. how Peter feels

  289. about the Lord Jesus.

  290. When they came

  291. for Jesus,

  292. John tells us

  293. that it was Peter

  294. who had been quick,

  295. though not particularly

  296. skillful,

  297. with the sword.

  298. He was part Galilean,

  299. part Glaswegian.

  300. And when we get to glory,

  301. I'd love to ask him,

  302. Peter,

  303. was that the upstroke,

  304. actually,

  305. when you're lifting the sword

  306. when you took the poor bloke's ear off?

  307. What was going on with it?

  308. It would be really interesting to know.

  309. But have a look at verse 49.

  310. When those who were around him

  311. saw what would follow,

  312. they said,

  313. Lord,

  314. shall we strike with the sword?

  315. And it was Peter

  316. in verse 50,

  317. John tells us.

  318. Didn't wait for an answer

  319. from Jesus.

  320. Struck the servant

  321. of the high priest

  322. and cut off his ear.

  323. And Jesus said,

  324. no more of this.

  325. And he touched his ear

  326. and healed him.

  327. So get the picture.

  328. Peter was ready

  329. for a sword fight.

  330. He might possibly

  331. have been prepared

  332. in that situation

  333. to be arrested

  334. and killed

  335. in the skirmish

  336. there and then.

  337. I think he was being truthful

  338. when he said,

  339. Lord,

  340. I'm ready to die for you.

  341. I'm ready to go

  342. to prison for you.

  343. And I think

  344. that was the context

  345. in which Peter

  346. saw that happening.

  347. They won't take me alive

  348. and they won't take you alive.

  349. I'm your wingman,

  350. Lord Jesus.

  351. Peter could have coped

  352. with that danger,

  353. fighting with Jesus

  354. as Jesus also fought.

  355. But what we learn

  356. from Peter

  357. now walking

  358. at a distance,

  359. at a careful distance

  360. from Jesus,

  361. is that it is much

  362. more difficult

  363. to remain confident

  364. in a Savior

  365. who is willing

  366. to suffer loss.

  367. Much more difficult

  368. to follow a leader

  369. who heals those

  370. who've come to harm him.

  371. It's the Lord's

  372. apparent passivity

  373. with his enemies

  374. and the enemies

  375. of his people

  376. that puts a distance

  377. between Peter

  378. and the Lord

  379. and often puts

  380. a distance

  381. between us

  382. and the Lord.

  383. You know,

  384. as Peter watched

  385. that freshly lopped ear

  386. being perfectly restored,

  387. that miracle happening,

  388. and that miracle

  389. having zero impact

  390. on the arrest party,

  391. and Jesus saying,

  392. enough with the swords,

  393. and Jesus submissively

  394. going with those

  395. who were taking him

  396. in ultimately to death,

  397. Peter hangs back.

  398. And the mystery is,

  399. why doesn't Jesus

  400. just thump these guys?

  401. Why doesn't he,

  402. with all the sovereign power

  403. he has,

  404. take the breath

  405. out their lungs?

  406. They're toast!

  407. They're finished!

  408. A thought from Jesus

  409. and they're gone.

  410. Why doesn't he do it?

  411. Why does he tolerate

  412. this nonsense?

  413. And Luke tells us,

  414. doesn't he,

  415. how completely overwhelmed

  416. Jesus looked here?

  417. Have a look at verse 32,

  418. sorry,

  419. verse 63,

  420. at the end of our passage.

  421. Now the men who were

  422. holding Jesus in custody

  423. were mocking him

  424. as they beat him.

  425. They also blindfolded him

  426. and kept asking him,

  427. prophesy,

  428. who is it that struck you?

  429. And they said many other

  430. things against him,

  431. blaspheming him.

  432. And all this was going on

  433. when Peter sat at the fire.

  434. So not only had he seen

  435. Jesus passive

  436. at the point of arrest,

  437. he was now seeing

  438. Jesus passive

  439. at the hands of his enemies.

  440. And Peter sat there

  441. around the fire

  442. among the group,

  443. struggling to summon up

  444. the same devotion to Jesus.

  445. Jesus now bound

  446. and blindfolded

  447. and beaten

  448. and bloodied.

  449. And you know,

  450. 2,000 years later,

  451. people are still

  452. in that situation.

  453. They may be personally

  454. impressed by Jesus

  455. but publicly embarrassed

  456. by him.

  457. Personally impressed

  458. by all the things

  459. they see that he's able

  460. to do in the Gospels.

  461. Personally impressed

  462. even by his love

  463. and self-sacrifice

  464. but publicly embarrassed

  465. to identify

  466. with someone

  467. who's prepared

  468. to appear

  469. so shamefully weak

  470. as that.

  471. They can't bring themselves

  472. to trust in

  473. and stand by

  474. a Saviour

  475. who was willing

  476. to suffer,

  477. to be rejected,

  478. mocked,

  479. spat upon,

  480. blasphemed,

  481. nailed to a cross.

  482. But that is the absolute

  483. core of the Gospel.

  484. Listen to Paul

  485. in 1 Corinthians 1.

  486. He says,

  487. Christ did not send me

  488. to baptize

  489. but to preach the Gospel

  490. and not with words

  491. of eloquent wisdom

  492. lest the cross

  493. of Christ

  494. be emptied

  495. of its power.

  496. For the word

  497. of the cross

  498. is folly

  499. to those

  500. who are perishing.

  501. but to us

  502. who are being saved

  503. it is the power

  504. of God.

  505. At that point

  506. in Peter's life

  507. this cross

  508. experience of Jesus

  509. which began

  510. long before

  511. he was actually

  512. nailed to the

  513. pieces of wood

  514. looked like folly.

  515. It looked pathetic.

  516. It looked so

  517. unappealing.

  518. It looked so

  519. hopeless,

  520. so embarrassing.

  521. Peter's keeping

  522. at a careful distance.

  523. But the day would come

  524. and I'll tell you

  525. about it later

  526. when Peter

  527. with Paul

  528. with all of us

  529. who know Christ

  530. saw that that

  531. is the power of God.

  532. Final thing

  533. for us to notice.

  534. His personal

  535. confidence

  536. and willful

  537. disobedience

  538. and careful distance

  539. and his social

  540. acceptance.

  541. Verse 55

  542. When they had

  543. kindled a fire

  544. in the middle

  545. of the courtyard

  546. and sat down

  547. together

  548. Peter sat down

  549. among them.

  550. Now it's interesting

  551. the way Luke

  552. records it

  553. that there's

  554. now no distance

  555. between Peter

  556. and those

  557. who arrested Jesus.

  558. Distance between

  559. him and Jesus

  560. but Luke

  561. really

  562. draws our

  563. mind's eye

  564. to the point

  565. that Peter

  566. gets right

  567. in among them

  568. there.

  569. That's a risky

  570. thing to do.

  571. He'd been the one

  572. who tried to be

  573. a bit handy

  574. with the sword.

  575. So it was

  576. likely that

  577. they clocked

  578. him.

  579. They knew

  580. his face

  581. but Peter

  582. had perhaps

  583. subconsciously

  584. decided that

  585. he was going

  586. to settle

  587. at least

  588. that night

  589. where he was

  590. going to be

  591. was amongst

  592. this crowd.

  593. He wanted

  594. the security

  595. of being

  596. among them

  597. and soon

  598. that was put

  599. beyond all

  600. doubt as the

  601. questions came.

  602. Verse 56

  603. The servant

  604. girl seeing

  605. him as he

  606. sat in the

  607. light looking

  608. closely at him

  609. said this man

  610. was also with

  611. him but he

  612. denied it

  613. saying women

  614. I don't

  615. know him.

  616. A little

  617. later verse

  618. 58 someone

  619. else saw

  620. him and

  621. said you're

  622. also one

  623. of them.

  624. Peter answered

  625. man I am

  626. not.

  627. And after

  628. an interval

  629. of about an

  630. hour still

  631. another insisted

  632. saying certainly

  633. this man also

  634. was with them

  635. for he too

  636. is a Galilean.

  637. His accent

  638. gave them

  639. away.

  640. But Peter

  641. said man I

  642. do not know

  643. what you are

  644. talking about.

  645. And immediately

  646. while he was

  647. still speaking

  648. the cock crowed

  649. and the Lord

  650. turned and

  651. looked at

  652. Peter and

  653. Peter remembered

  654. the saying of

  655. the Lord how

  656. he had said

  657. to him before

  658. the cock crows

  659. today you will

  660. deny me three

  661. times and he

  662. went out and

  663. wept bitterly.

  664. You see how

  665. fast that

  666. happened.

  667. Now let's not

  668. imagine that

  669. Peter's crimes

  670. are in a

  671. different league

  672. from our own.

  673. Haven't we all

  674. felt the inner

  675. conflict that

  676. Peter experienced

  677. here as we're

  678. forced to

  679. decide whose

  680. approval we

  681. want most.

  682. The world's

  683. or the Lord's.

  684. Haven't we all

  685. felt that kind

  686. of I just

  687. like to be

  688. among them.

  689. I just like to

  690. fit in.

  691. I just like to

  692. be accepted.

  693. I just keep a

  694. slight distance

  695. from Jesus.

  696. It's not going to

  697. mean anything.

  698. But it means I

  699. can follow him

  700. and still be

  701. pals here in

  702. the crowd.

  703. And although

  704. these three

  705. denials happened

  706. over a period

  707. of more than

  708. an hour,

  709. the stunning

  710. reality is that

  711. it happened so

  712. quickly.

  713. Just as Jesus

  714. said, remember

  715. I read to you

  716. chapter 21

  717. verse 34,

  718. watch yourselves

  719. lest your hearts

  720. be weighed down

  721. with dot dot dot

  722. cares of this

  723. life and that

  724. day come upon

  725. you suddenly like

  726. a trap.

  727. Is that not

  728. exactly what

  729. happened to

  730. Peter?

  731. The cares of

  732. this life,

  733. that is the

  734. need to belong,

  735. the need to

  736. fit in,

  737. the need to

  738. be accepted,

  739. the need to

  740. be approved

  741. of by the

  742. culture,

  743. by our peers,

  744. the need to

  745. be loved in

  746. the world that

  747. is in rebellion

  748. against the

  749. Savior,

  750. that will come

  751. upon us

  752. suddenly like a

  753. trap as it

  754. came upon

  755. Peter.

  756. Peter.

  757. He couldn't

  758. see that as

  759. he went to

  760. his death

  761. offering no

  762. resistance,

  763. the Lord

  764. Jesus was

  765. fighting and

  766. winning for

  767. Peter and

  768. all the others

  769. who would put

  770. their trust in

  771. him.

  772. He didn't see

  773. it at that

  774. point, he

  775. did see it

  776. later, but

  777. not at that

  778. point.

  779. See, here's

  780. the depth of

  781. this darkness

  782. in Judas and

  783. in Peter.

  784. But more

  785. briefly,

  786. let's finish

  787. with the

  788. defeat of

  789. this darkness.

  790. Let's see

  791. the triumph

  792. of the Lord

  793. Jesus even

  794. in this

  795. dark session.

  796. We get

  797. nowhere near

  798. resurrection

  799. morning yet,

  800. but there is

  801. still triumph

  802. of the Lord

  803. Jesus here.

  804. Notice a

  805. couple of

  806. things in the

  807. text.

  808. Number one,

  809. Jesus defeated

  810. the darkness

  811. by his

  812. prayerful

  813. submission.

  814. Back to the

  815. top, verse

  816. 41,

  817. he withdrew

  818. from the

  819. disciples about

  820. a stone's

  821. throw and

  822. knelt down

  823. and prayed,

  824. saying,

  825. Father, if

  826. you're willing,

  827. remove this

  828. cup from

  829. me.

  830. Nevertheless,

  831. not my

  832. will but

  833. yours be

  834. done.

  835. And you

  836. know, until

  837. this point

  838. in history

  839. when the

  840. Lord Jesus

  841. was born,

  842. Satan had

  843. enjoyed a

  844. 100% success

  845. rate with

  846. all the men

  847. and women

  848. who ever

  849. lived as

  850. they embraced

  851. his dark

  852. rebellion against

  853. God to

  854. varying degrees.

  855. there had

  856. never been a

  857. human being

  858. before who

  859. in total

  860. integrity and

  861. sincerity could

  862. go before the

  863. Father and

  864. say,

  865. nevertheless,

  866. not my

  867. will but

  868. yours be

  869. done.

  870. But notice

  871. what is

  872. happening here.

  873. On that

  874. dark night,

  875. here is a

  876. man born of

  877. woman, fully

  878. God yet fully

  879. human.

  880. And he's

  881. unlike all the

  882. others who

  883. came before

  884. him and came

  885. after him.

  886. On that

  887. dark night,

  888. he does not

  889. run from

  890. God and

  891. his will,

  892. but he

  893. runs to

  894. God and

  895. his will.

  896. And he

  897. kneels and

  898. he pleads in

  899. the light of

  900. his Father's

  901. will.

  902. And it gives

  903. us a sense,

  904. a clear indication,

  905. doesn't it,

  906. of the

  907. inestimable

  908. horror of

  909. what Jesus

  910. was about to

  911. face, that

  912. he asked

  913. his Father

  914. that if

  915. possible there

  916. could be a

  917. change of

  918. plan.

  919. And you

  920. and I

  921. can be

  922. sure that

  923. if there

  924. was any

  925. other way

  926. to destroy

  927. Satan and

  928. his darkness

  929. and free

  930. men and

  931. women from

  932. the grip

  933. of sin

  934. and reconcile

  935. them to

  936. God forever,

  937. then the

  938. Father who

  939. so loved

  940. the Son

  941. would have

  942. found it

  943. in this

  944. moment.

  945. If there

  946. was any

  947. other way

  948. of redeeming

  949. sinners and

  950. defeating the

  951. darkness,

  952. his Father

  953. would have

  954. found it

  955. in this

  956. moment,

  957. but there

  958. was none.

  959. there was

  960. no other

  961. way.

  962. Both the

  963. Father and

  964. the Son

  965. are committed

  966. to the

  967. plan of

  968. salvation.

  969. Verse 43,

  970. and there

  971. appeared to

  972. him an

  973. angel from

  974. heaven

  975. strengthening

  976. him.

  977. That was

  978. the Father's

  979. way of

  980. confirming to

  981. his Son

  982. that the

  983. cup could

  984. not be

  985. removed.

  986. Father,

  987. is there

  988. any way,

  989. Son?

  990. There's no

  991. other way.

  992. the

  993. cup is

  994. a reference

  995. to the

  996. experience

  997. that the

  998. Lord Jesus

  999. is about

  1000. to face.

  1001. It's like

  1002. drinking a

  1003. cup.

  1004. It wasn't

  1005. just unbearable

  1006. physical

  1007. suffering,

  1008. but unimaginable

  1009. spiritual

  1010. suffering.

  1011. Jesus

  1012. describes the

  1013. contents of

  1014. that cup

  1015. just a

  1016. couple of

  1017. verses

  1018. earlier in

  1019. verse 37.

  1020. Let's glance

  1021. at it for a

  1022. moment.

  1023. He says,

  1024. So he

  1025. knew with

  1026. all that

  1027. was

  1028. happening,

  1029. all the

  1030. suffering,

  1031. all the

  1032. betrayal,

  1033. all the

  1034. denial,

  1035. he knew

  1036. that the

  1037. plan was

  1038. going split

  1039. second according

  1040. to the

  1041. will of

  1042. his

  1043. Father.

  1044. And in

  1045. Luke 22

    Luke 22:37

  1046. verse 37

  1047. that I've

  1048. just read,

  1049. the Lord

  1050. Jesus is

  1051. quoting,

  1052. you recognize

  1053. it from

  1054. the end

  1055. of Isaiah

  1056. 53,

  1057. probably to

  1058. say all

  1059. of Isaiah

  1060. 53,

  1061. but he

  1062. just quotes

  1063. the last

  1064. part,

  1065. verse 12,

  1066. which says,

  1067. Because he

  1068. poured out

  1069. his soul

  1070. to death

  1071. and was

  1072. numbered

  1073. with the

  1074. transgressors,

  1075. yet he

  1076. bore the

  1077. sin of

  1078. many and

  1079. makes

  1080. intercession

  1081. for the

  1082. transgressors.

  1083. That's

  1084. how the

  1085. darkness

  1086. was defeated.

  1087. darkness

  1088. defeated

  1089. in the

  1090. darkness

  1091. as the

  1092. Lord

  1093. Jesus

  1094. prays

  1095. submissively

  1096. and obeys

  1097. the will

  1098. of his

  1099. Father

  1100. and is

  1101. numbered

  1102. among the

  1103. transgressors

  1104. and finds

  1105. a way by

  1106. his death

  1107. in our

  1108. place to

  1109. make

  1110. intercession

  1111. for the

  1112. transgressors,

  1113. to set

  1114. us free

  1115. from our

  1116. sin,

  1117. bearing the

  1118. sin of

  1119. many.

  1120. the

  1121. darkness

  1122. is defeated

  1123. as God

  1124. treats

  1125. his

  1126. perfect

  1127. son

  1128. in the

  1129. way that

  1130. loathsome

  1131. sin

  1132. deserves

  1133. to be

  1134. treated,

  1135. so that

  1136. he can

  1137. treat

  1138. loathsome

  1139. sinners

  1140. in the

  1141. way that

  1142. his

  1143. perfect

  1144. son

  1145. deserves

  1146. to be

  1147. treated.

  1148. And that's

  1149. happening

  1150. at that

  1151. moment in

  1152. the garden.

  1153. And this

  1154. was not

  1155. easy for

  1156. Jesus.

  1157. Look at

  1158. verse 44,

  1159. and being

  1160. in agony,

  1161. in an

  1162. agony,

  1163. he prayed

  1164. more

  1165. earnestly,

  1166. and his

  1167. sweat became

  1168. like great

  1169. drops of

  1170. blood falling

  1171. down to

  1172. the ground.

  1173. He was in

  1174. agony,

  1175. not at the

  1176. prospect of

  1177. dying,

  1178. but of

  1179. bearing in

  1180. himself the

  1181. gut-wrenching

  1182. vileness of

  1183. human sin.

  1184. We don't

  1185. find it gut-wrenching

  1186. and vileness.

  1187. We quite like

  1188. it.

  1189. We toy

  1190. with it.

  1191. But to the

  1192. Lord Jesus,

  1193. it is gut-wrenching

  1194. vileness.

  1195. You know that

  1196. experience you

  1197. get when you've

  1198. been out a

  1199. walk and you

  1200. go home and

  1201. you go in

  1202. through the

  1203. front door and

  1204. you're in the

  1205. door just a

  1206. couple of

  1207. minutes in

  1208. the home and

  1209. you suddenly

  1210. get that

  1211. revolting stench

  1212. in your nose.

  1213. And what's the

  1214. first thing you

  1215. check?

  1216. And there it

  1217. is.

  1218. And you

  1219. glance back and

  1220. there's that

  1221. beautiful pattern

  1222. over the white

  1223. wool carpet.

  1224. And some

  1225. dog has done

  1226. its business and

  1227. you've trod in

  1228. it and you've

  1229. dragged it into

  1230. the house.

  1231. Now you

  1232. know that

  1233. kind of

  1234. repulsive,

  1235. gut-wrenching,

  1236. oh,

  1237. vile.

  1238. The smell,

  1239. the look.

  1240. I don't want to

  1241. put you off your

  1242. lunch.

  1243. I'll say no more

  1244. about it other

  1245. than this.

  1246. Multiply that

  1247. sense of

  1248. revulsion a

  1249. billion times and

  1250. you're not getting

  1251. close to how God

  1252. feels about our

  1253. sin.

  1254. God's

  1255. sin.

  1256. And Jesus,

  1257. I'll come to

  1258. you,

  1259. buddy.

  1260. And Jesus,

  1261. Jesus knows and

  1262. feels it in the

  1263. midst of it.

  1264. Jesus knows and

  1265. feels that reality

1266. in the midst of it.

  1267. He knows that he's

  1268. about to deal with

  1269. that.

  1270. It's the agony for

  1271. him of on the

  1272. cross bearing this

  1273. gut-wrenching

  1274. vileness of human

  1275. sin as he's numbered

  1276. among the

  1277. transgressors,

  1278. as he takes our

  1279. place on the

  1280. cross.

  1281. That's the

  1282. proclamation of

  1283. the gospel.

  1284. And as a

  1285. consequence of

  1286. that,

  1287. he's going to be

  1288. cut off from

  1289. fellowship with

  1290. his father.

  1291. So he is in

  1292. an agony in

  1293. the garden as he

  1294. thinks of it.

  1295. It didn't look

  1296. like it at the

  1297. time,

  1298. but this was the

  1299. defeat of

  1300. darkness.

  1301. In Colossians 2,

  1302. Paul,

  1303. speaking of the

  1304. Lord Jesus,

  1305. says that he,

  1306. in these very

  1307. moments,

  1308. disarmed the

  1309. rulers and

  1310. authorities and

  1311. put them to

  1312. shame,

  1313. triumphing over

  1314. them by the

  1315. cross.

  1316. Peter couldn't

  1317. see it.

  1318. He saw the

  1319. opposite.

  1320. He saw Jesus

  1321. being disarmed by

  1322. the rulers and

  1323. authorities.

  1324. He saw them

  1325. putting him to

  1326. shame, but no,

  1327. it was the very

  1328. opposite.

  1329. And it's

  1330. wonderful that

  1331. later Peter got

  1332. to see it.

  1333. 1 Peter 2,

    1 Peter 2:21

  1334. verse 21,

  1335. for to this you've

  1336. been called

  1337. because Christ

  1338. also suffered

  1339. for you.

  1340. Leave an example

  1341. that you should

  1342. follow in his

  1343. steps.

  1344. Listen to what

  1345. Peter later

  1346. rejoiced in.

  1347. He committed

  1348. no sin,

  1349. neither was

  1350. deceit found

  1351. in his mouth.

  1352. When he was

  1353. reviled,

  1354. he did not

  1355. revile in

  1356. return.

  1357. Peter was

  1358. seething at him

  1359. for that at the

  1360. point, but later

  1361. he saw it.

  1362. When he

  1363. suffered, he did

  1364. not threaten.

  1365. Peter thought

  1366. that was so weak,

  1367. but later he

  1368. gets it.

  1369. But continued

  1370. entrusting himself

  1371. to him who

  1372. judges justly.

  1373. He himself

  1374. bore our sins

  1375. in his body

  1376. on the tree,

  1377. that we might

  1378. die to sin

  1379. and live to

  1380. righteousness.

  1381. By his wounds

  1382. you've been

  1383. healed, for you

  1384. were straying

  1385. like sheep.

  1386. Oh, Peter knew

  1387. all about that,

  1388. but have returned

  1389. to the shepherd

  1390. and overseer of

  1391. your souls.

  1392. that dark

  1393. night, the

  1394. depths of the

  1395. darkness, also

  1396. in the midst of

  1397. it all, the

  1398. defeat of the

  1399. darkness.

  1400. Jesus defeated

  1401. the darkness by

  1402. his prayerful

  1403. submission.

  1404. And finally,

  1405. Jesus defeated

  1406. the darkness as

  1407. our perfect

  1408. substitute.

  1409. This is amazing.

  1410. In order to

  1411. free Peter and

  1412. me and everyone

  1413. else from the

  1414. power of darkness

  1415. over us, from

  1416. our sense of

  1417. being conquered,

  1418. completely at

  1419. ease in that

  1420. crowd, in the

  1421. depths of the

  1422. darkness, the

  1423. Lord Jesus not

  1424. only had to bear

  1425. our sin, he had

1426. to do it as one

  1427. who had none of

  1428. his own.

  1429. He had to be

  1430. able to do

  1431. that in total

  1432. personal perfection

  1433. and that's what

  1434. we see here.

  1435. And although

  1436. we're rightly

  1437. challenged by his

  1438. straightforward

  1439. command in

  1440. verse 40,

  1441. pray that you

  1442. may not enter

  1443. into temptation,

  1444. the real take

  1445. home of this

  1446. text this

  1447. morning, is

  1448. not just that

  1449. we should pray

  1450. more, certainly

  1451. that is an

  1452. application, but

  1453. the point is to

  1454. see Jesus as our

  1455. true and only

  1456. champion.

  1457. That's what we

  1458. need to see.

  1459. He is the

  1460. champion over our

  1461. prayerlessness.

  1462. The instruction

  1463. came, the command

  1464. came, pray, and

  1465. they didn't do it

  1466. just like I didn't

1467. do it, just like you

  1468. didn't do it.

  1469. But Jesus did it.

  1470. The true champion

  1471. over all our

  1472. sinful prayerlessness,

  1473. all our failure

  1474. and trials and

  1475. temptations, all our

  1476. rebellion against

  1477. God's will, in the

  1478. midst of that dark

  1479. night, he prevailed.

  1480. And do you know

1481. that even as he did

  1482. that, even as he

  1483. went and prayed,

1484. even as he went in

  1485. agony and sorrow

  1486. that we cannot enter

  1487. into, do you know

  1488. that as he was

  1489. doing that, he was

  1490. achieving something

  1491. glorious, that

1492. before he died as our

  1493. substitute, he lived

  1494. as our substitute.

1495. So he died for my

  1496. prayerlessness, having

  1497. not failed to be

  1498. prayerful himself.

  1499. He died for my

  1500. failure to submit to

  1501. my heavenly father's

  1502. will, having utterly

  1503. submitted to his

  1504. heavenly father's

  1505. will.

1506. So that now as we

  1507. turn to him, risen

  1508. from the dead, we

  1509. can know beyond

  1510. doubt in this dark

  1511. world, according to

  1512. Colossians 1, that he

  1513. has delivered us from

  1514. the domain of

  1515. darkness and

  1516. transferred us into

  1517. the kingdom of his

  1518. beloved son in whom

  1519. we have redemption,

  1520. the forgiveness of

  1521. sins.

  1522. darkness.

  1523. The power of

  1524. darkness was awesome

  1525. that night.

  1526. The depths of the

  1527. power, but the defeat

  1528. of that darkness is

  1529. glorious and is

  1530. eternal.

  1531. Let's pray together.

  1532. we ask, gracious

  1533. heavenly father, as we

1534. look at your son, as

  1535. we think about this

  1536. text, this amazing

  1537. historical record of

  1538. what happened to him

  1539. and how humans

  1540. reacted and how the

  1541. demons and Satan

  1542. reacted and how we

  1543. still struggle with the

  1544. picture of a

  1545. submissive Jesus, not

  1546. realizing what he is

  1547. accomplishing, not

  1548. realizing that by that

  1549. arrest and by that

  1550. mocking and by that

  1551. beating and by that

  1552. spitting and by that

  1553. cross, he disarmed the

  1554. rulers and authorities

1555. and put them to open

  1556. shame, triumphing over

  1557. them by the cross.

1558. How we thank you for the

  1559. gospel today, for its

1560. power to deliver men and

  1561. women this morning from

  1562. the domain of darkness

1563. and transfer us to the

  1564. kingdom of your

  1565. beloved, risen and

  1566. exalted son.

1567. We thank you that in

  1568. him, in his

  1569. perfection, in his

  1570. substitutionary death, in

  1571. his resurrection and

  1572. reign, we have

  1573. redemption, the

  1574. forgiveness of our

  1575. sins.

1576. Grant us to glory in

  1577. our Savior, in his

  1578. precious name we pray.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. ULATE

  1584. I

  1585. END
