  1. Graeme, thank you very much and thank you everyone for the invitation to be with you.

  2. And the idea for this came as we remembered the Lord Jesus last Sunday evening in Teesside Christian Fellowship.

  3. And I thought it would be appropriate to share with you.

  4. I did seek some guidance from Graeme during the week.

  5. And I understand that you've been spending not just quite a bit of time in Luke's Gospel,

  6. but in latter weeks, particularly around the cross and, of course, around the open grave at Easter time.

  7. I was a widower. I have remarried.

  8. And my wife, Laura, has come with me today.

  9. And she gave me an idea about something.

  10. And just to begin with, you'll see that there are three cups up there.

  11. The cup that I drink, I drink from all three of them.

  12. And they have, of course, associations.

  13. It's not that we're OCD, but when you're moving from one house to another,

  14. you end up doing things like counting the number of mugs you have.

  15. And Laura has 135 mugs that she brought with her.

  16. And she likes to rotate the mugs.

  17. That's not get around to get a clean bit in the lip.

  18. But she uses some mugs at particular times.

  19. And, of course, it made me think, as I've never thought before,

  20. yes, I do like particular cups or mugs.

  21. And there's an association with them.

  22. The one at the top left is my favourite mug,

  23. a Highland Stoneware mug, a nice plug.

  24. I'm on commission.

  25. And it's a lovely mug to drink, either coffee or tea.

  26. The one on the right-hand side at the top, the mackerel one,

  27. was the first mug that Laura bought for me.

  28. It won't be the last, I'm sure.

  29. So there's a nice association with that,

  30. particularly good for tea because it's porcelain.

  31. The Stoneware one is better for coffee.

  32. But porcelain, you've really got to have tea in a porcelain cup, don't you?

  33. You see, I'm a bit OCD myself.

  34. But the one at the bottom is one that's got an association for me

  35. going away back to the forests of northern Sweden.

  36. And I was given that as a gift with a group of people

  37. that became very, very dear friends.

  38. And actually, I don't drink from it so often.

  39. It's an outdoor cup.

  40. But there are lots of stories associated with that cup,

  41. including me being passed through webbing by very small people.

  42. I wasn't quite as large then, but it was a huge effort by them.

  43. And I was just glad to get through this webbing

  44. on this course that we were on in northern Sweden.

  45. And the cup that I drink appears in the Lord Jesus' life.

  46. And we're going to be thinking about the cup that he drank.

  47. First passage is in Mark and chapter 10.

  48. If you want to follow it in your own copy of the Word of God,

  49. please turn to that.

  50. And if you can read the screen, then good and well.

  51. It's up there for us.

  52. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, said to him,

  53. Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.

  54. Jesus said to them,

  55. You do not know what you're asking.

  56. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink,

  57. or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?

  58. And they said to him,

  59. We are able.

  60. And Jesus said to them,

  61. The cup that I drink, you will drink.

  62. And with the baptism with which I am baptized,

  63. you will be baptized.

  64. But to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant,

  65. but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

  66. Then go over to Mark and chapter 14.

  67. You will get the association as we read that passage together,

  68. verses 22 through 25.

  69. And as they were eating, he took bread,

  70. and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to them,

  71. and said,

  72. Take, this is my body.

  73. And he took a cup.

  74. And when he had given thanks,

  75. he gave it to them,

  76. and they all drank of it.

  77. And he said to them,

  78. This is my blood of the covenant,

  79. which is poured out for many.

  80. Truly I say to you,

  81. I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine

  82. until that day when I drink it new

  83. in the kingdom of God.

  84. And staying in Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  85. just down to verse 32.

  86. And they went to a place called Gethsemane.

  87. And he said to his disciples,

  88. Sit here while I pray.

  89. And he took with him Peter and James and John,

  90. and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.

  91. And he said to them,

  92. My soul is very sorrowful, even to death.

  93. Remain here and watch.

  94. And going a little further,

  95. he fell on the ground and prayed that,

  96. if it were possible,

  97. the hour might pass from him.

  98. And he said,

  99. Abba,

  100. Father,

  101. all things are possible for you.

  102. Remove this cup from me.

  103. Yet not what I will,

  104. but what you will.

  105. And he came and found them sleeping,

  106. and he said to Peter,

  107. Simon, are you asleep?

  108. Could you not watch one hour?

  109. Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.

  110. The spirit indeed is willing,

  111. but the flesh is weak.

  112. And again he went away and prayed,

  113. saying the same words.

  114. Matthew's account includes those words,

  115. in chapter 26 and 42.

  116. My father,

  117. if this cannot pass unless I drink it,

  118. your will be done.

  119. And again he came and found them sleeping,

  120. for their eyes were very heavy,

  121. and they did not know what to answer him.

  122. And he came the third time and said to them,

  123. Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?

  124. It's enough.

  125. The hour has come.

  126. The Son of Man is betrayed

  127. into the hands of sinners.

  128. Rise, let us be going.

  129. See, my betrayer is at hand.

  130. God will bless his word to us.

  131. The word cup is used 86 times in the Bible.

  132. It's used literally, of course,

  133. to describe a cup.

  134. For instance,

  135. he took a cup.

  136. We read that in Martin chapter 14.

  137. But it's also used figuratively

  138. Remove this cup from me,

  139. said Jesus in the garden.

  140. But yet,

  141. then he was not holding

  142. a physical,

  143. literal cup.

  144. And so we're going to be thinking

  145. about the transition between

  146. a literal cup

  147. and a figurative cup

  148. and what that meant

  149. for the Lord Jesus.

  150. Figuratively,

  151. in the Bible,

  152. the term cup is used

  153. quite often.

  154. David uses it

  155. really quite often.

  156. And in Psalm 116,

  157. he says,

  158. I will lift up

  159. the cup

  160. of salvation.

  161. Now, of course,

  162. that isn't literal.

  163. But he's thinking about

  164. the fullness

  165. of the deliverance

  166. God has given to him.

  167. And as the

  168. great king of Israel,

  169. he has

  170. a large cause

  171. to thank God

  172. for deliverance

  173. in personal salvation,

  174. but also in rescue

  175. from his enemies.

  176. The great psalm

  177. that we sometimes

  178. repeat

  179. and even sing,

  180. Psalm 23,

  181. you prepare a table

  182. before me

  183. in the presence

  184. of my enemies.

  185. You anoint

  186. my head

  187. with oil.

  188. My cup

  189. overflows.

  190. And we get used

  191. to repeating

  192. the words,

  193. but without

  194. thinking of it

  195. as being literal.

  196. And these things

  197. really do mean

  198. something

  199. to David

  200. and they mean

  201. something

  202. to us.

  203. As we think

  204. about the rod

  205. and the staff,

  206. they comfort me.

  207. He makes us

  208. to lie down

  209. in green pastures,

  210. the quiet waters.

  211. And of course,

  212. it's not a literal

  213. experience,

  214. but figuratively,

  215. as we find

  216. spiritual solace

  217. in the one

  218. who cares for us,

  219. who looks over us

  220. as the shepherd.

  221. The Lord

  222. is literal.

  223. The shepherd

  224. is a figure.

  225. We read of

  226. the cup of consolation,

  227. the cup of staggering.

  228. Some might know that,

  229. perhaps filled

  230. with buckfast,

  231. I don't know.

  232. The cup of staggering,

  233. but there is also

  234. the cup of horror

  235. and desolation.

  236. And so we're going

  237. to be thinking

  238. primarily

  239. about a figurative

  240. use of the term

  241. cup.

  242. But first of all,

  243. in Mark

  244. and chapter 10,

  245. when James

  246. and John

  247. come and ask,

  248. or their mother

  249. asks,

  250. about where

  251. her sons,

  252. where these disciples

  253. will sit

  254. in the kingdom,

  255. and they want

  256. to get

  257. a reserved

  258. space

  259. right beside

  260. Jesus,

  261. and the Lord

  262. Jesus

  263. asks them,

  264. are you able

  265. to drink

  266. the cup

  267. that I drink?

  268. Are you able

  269. to be baptized

  270. with the baptism

  271. I'm baptized with?

  272. And they say,

  273. we are

  274. able.

  275. We are able.

  276. Not quite sure

  277. what they

  278. understood

  279. by that,

  280. but they are

  281. affirming

  282. that they would

  283. want to

  284. experience

  285. everything

  286. that the Lord

  287. Jesus

  288. experiences.

  289. Now,

  290. the reason

  291. I read

  292. the passage

  293. from Mark

  294. 14,

  295. and the

  296. communion,

  297. the Lord's

  298. Supper,

  299. or the

  300. Passover meal

  301. where the

  302. Lord's Supper

  303. was instituted,

  304. was that

  305. literally,

  306. they did

  307. take the

  308. cup that

  309. he drank

  310. from.

  311. There are

  312. a number

  313. of cups

  314. that are

  315. drunk

  316. over the

  317. passage of

  318. a Passover

  319. meal,

  320. and I

  321. emphasized,

  322. at least in

  323. the reading,

  324. that they

  325. all drank

  326. from it.

  327. The Lord

  328. Jesus drank

  329. of the cup

  330. and they

  331. all drank

  332. of the

  333. cup.

  334. And so,

  335. in one sense,

  336. it is literally

  337. fulfilled that

  338. the disciples,

  339. James and

  340. John,

  341. drank of

  342. the cup.

  343. Concerning

  344. the baptism

  345. with which

  346. the Lord

  347. Jesus was

  348. baptized,

  349. that might

  350. be a

  351. throwback

  352. to the

  353. beginning

  354. of his

  355. public

  356. ministry

  357. when he

  358. enters into

  359. the Jordan

  360. and asks

  361. his second

  362. cousin,

  363. John the

  364. Baptist,

  365. to baptize

  366. him.

  367. And the

  368. Lord Jesus

  369. goes under

  370. the water

  371. of the

  372. Jordan,

  373. and when

  374. he comes

  375. up,

  376. you may

  377. remember

  378. that the

  379. spirit came

  380. down in

  381. bodily form

  382. like a

  383. dove and

  384. rested upon

  385. him,

  386. thereby signifying

  387. to everyone

  388. who was

  389. spectating

  390. that day

  391. that the

  392. Lord Jesus

  393. was being

  394. called into

  395. a particular

  396. mission and

  397. ministry,

  398. and he was

  399. empowered by

  400. the Holy

  401. Spirit.

  402. And of

  403. course,

  404. that is

  405. exactly what

  406. happened to

  407. both James

  408. and John,

  409. when after

  410. the resurrection

  411. and in

  412. Jerusalem and

  413. in an upper

  414. room,

  415. they encounter

  416. the giving

  417. of the Holy

  418. Spirit as

  419. was promised

  420. to them.

  421. And the

  422. Holy Spirit

  423. descends,

  424. not this

  425. time like

  426. a dove,

  427. but like

  428. fiery tongues,

  429. and rests

  430. upon them.

  431. And so

  432. literally,

  433. they were

  434. baptized by

  435. the Holy

  436. Spirit,

  437. just as

  438. Jesus was

  439. on that

  440. day.

  441. But then,

  442. when we

  443. think of

  444. the figurative

  445. application of

  446. this,

  447. the Lord

  448. Jesus may

  449. have been

  450. meaning not

  451. just a

  452. literal drinking

  453. of the cup

  454. and a

  455. literal baptism

  456. by the

  457. Holy Spirit,

  458. but rather

  459. that he

  460. understood

  461. the figurative

  462. use of

  463. the term.

  464. And the

  465. Lord Jesus

  466. is going to

  467. suffer

  468. tremendously

  469. just after

  470. this Lord's

  471. Supper,

  472. institution

  473. of this

  474. first

  475. communion.

  476. And he

  477. is going

  478. to go

  479. to Calvary.

  480. He's already

  481. warned his

  482. disciples that

  483. they too are

  484. going to

  485. participate in

  486. his sufferings.

  487. As the

  488. world has

  489. hated me,

  490. so they

  491. will hate

  492. you.

  493. So if we

  494. take James,

  495. who was

  496. one of the

  497. sons of

  498. Zebedee and

  499. whose mother

  500. asked the

  501. question,

  502. James was

  503. the first

  504. apostle to

  505. be martyred.

  506. And we

  507. read of that

  508. very early

  509. on in

  510. Luke's

  511. account of

  512. the early

  513. church.

  514. John was

  515. exiled on

  516. the Isle

  517. of Patmos,

  518. and there

  519. were various

  520. things which

  521. he suffered

  522. in his

  523. life, but

  524. exile was

  525. one that we

  526. definitely know

  527. of from the

  528. scriptures,

  529. from tradition

  530. and history.

  531. There were

  532. all kinds of

  533. suffering that

  534. he too

  535. faced, but

  536. he was

  537. exiled on

  538. the Isle

  539. of Patmos.

  540. Jesus has

  541. said to his

  542. disciples,

  543. if they

  544. persecuted

  545. me, they

  546. will also

  547. persecute

  548. you.

  549. And the

  550. warning was

  551. given, and

  552. even to the

  553. early church,

  554. those who

  555. would count

  556. the cost

  557. before committing

  558. to following

  559. Jesus,

  560. Peter says

  561. to them,

  562. do not be

  563. surprised,

  564. at the

  565. fiery trial

  566. when it

  567. comes upon

  568. you to

  569. test you.

  570. Paul, the

  571. great apostle

  572. of the early

  573. church, said

  574. all who

  575. desire to

  576. live a

  577. godly life

  578. in Christ

  579. Jesus will

  580. be persecuted.

  581. We do

  582. forget that

  583. we are

  584. inured from

  585. so much

  586. suffering here

  587. in Scotland,

  588. and as we

  589. think of the

  590. church in so

  591. many parts

  592. of our

  593. world.

  594. If we

  595. think of

  596. what has

  597. happened in

  598. Syria, where

  599. prior to

  600. this awful

  601. war, there

  602. were numbered

  603. well over

  604. one million

  605. Christians,

  606. and now it's

  607. estimated only

  608. around 300,000

  609. or so are

  610. left.

  611. We ask the

  612. Christian families

  613. who have had to

  614. flee about

  615. great tribulation.

  616. They would

  617. give accounts

  618. of terrible

  619. suffering.

  620. I'm not

  621. sure if you

  622. have Syrian

  623. refugees here

  624. coming to

  625. the church

  626. we have in

  627. TCF, and

  628. the stories

  629. that are told

  630. are just

  631. absolutely

  632. horrendous.

  633. Mothers who

  634. don't know

  635. whether the

  636. father of

  637. their children

  638. still lives

  639. or not, or

  640. whether in

  641. the refugee

  642. camp or

  643. whatever it

  644. might be, but

  645. across our

  646. world, there

  647. is tremendous

  648. suffering for

  649. those who own

  650. the name of

  651. Christ.

  652. And of course,

  653. we should be

  654. particularly

  655. sensitive to

  656. the suffering

  657. of others.

  658. We haven't

  659. faced what

  660. Jesus, what

  661. Peter, what

  662. Paul talked

  663. about, and

  664. what James

  665. and John

  666. and the

  667. others faced

  668. personally.

  669. But of course,

  670. we are warned

  671. that we will

  672. face suffering.

  673. One of the

  674. issues that we

  675. do face in

  676. TCF is about

  677. sharing our

  678. faith personally.

  679. And in the

  680. fairly innocuous

  681. environment of

  682. Costa,

  683. that's a

  684. wonderful place

  685. to be able

  686. to do that.

  687. Perhaps

  688. forming a

  689. habit so that

  690. it's not a

  691. Sunday night

  692. we do that,

  693. but it's also

  694. the Monday at

  695. lunchtime and

  696. the Thursday

  697. in the evening

  698. when we're

  699. just with our

  700. friends.

  701. Just to be

  702. brave enough

  703. to own the

  704. name of

  705. Christ and

  706. to tell of

  707. his love,

  708. of his

  709. suffering,

  710. of the

  711. difference he's

  712. made in our

  713. lives.

  714. Oh, we

  715. have nothing

  716. to fear,

  717. but fear

  718. itself.

  719. How often

  720. will the

  721. devil keep

  722. us from

  723. just sharing

  724. simply and

  725. most

  726. straightforwardly?

  727. The church

  728. that I was in

  729. before going to

  730. TCF was

  731. Hillbank in

  732. Dundee,

  733. Hillbank

  734. Evangelical

  735. Church.

  736. We had a

  737. special weekend

  738. there with

  739. an evangelist

  740. who just

  741. oozed the

  742. gospel,

  743. who found

  744. opportunities

  745. everywhere.

  746. I picked

  747. him up from

  748. Edinburgh

  749. Airport,

  750. took him

  751. up to

  752. Arbroath

  753. and said

  754. we're going

  755. to have a

  756. chipped tea

  757. before we

  758. start our

  759. church weekend.

  760. He said

  761. well that's

  762. great,

  763. what will we

  764. get?

  765. I said

  766. I don't

  767. know,

  768. but here in

  769. Arbroath

  770. they have a

  771. speciality

  772. in making

  773. fritters.

  774. Fritters?

  775. What are

  776. fritters?

  777. He didn't

  778. say it with a

  779. West-of-Scotland

  780. accent of

  781. course,

  782. but we

  783. stood in

  784. the queue

  785. and he

  786. ordered a

  787. bag of

  788. fritters and

  789. he said

  790. that's

  791. absolutely

  792. amazing.

  793. Do you

  794. think Jesus

  795. ever had

  796. fritters with

  797. fish?

  798. And it's

  799. just a

  800. simple

  801. question,

  802. he just

  803. spoke as

  804. he thought.

  805. And before

  806. long,

  807. not only

  808. was the

  809. guy frying

  810. the fish

  811. engaged in

  812. a conversation

  813. about Jesus

  814. and his

  815. eating habits,

  816. but the

  817. whole shop

  818. were involved

  819. and he

  820. said,

  821. you know,

  822. it's just

  823. easy,

  824. just do

  825. it.

  826. And people

  827. were saying,

  828. but I

  829. find it so

  830. difficult to

  831. speak.

  832. And he

  833. said,

  834. well,

  835. what do

  836. you do

  837. when you

  838. meet your

  839. fellow

  840. parents at

  841. the school

  842. on a

  843. Monday

  844. morning with

  845. their

  846. children?

  847. Do you

  848. speak to

  849. them?

  850. Oh,

  851. yeah,

  852. that's

  853. easy.

  854. Well,

  855. just do

  856. it.

  857. We are

  858. warned

  859. about

  860. persecution,

  861. but of

  862. course we

  863. don't really

  864. face that

  865. here.

  866. But

  867. nonetheless

  868. we have

  869. the fear,

  870. or let

  871. me be

  872. honest,

  873. is it

  874. the shame?

  875. Is it

  876. the shame

  877. of being

  878. a Christian

  879. and of

  880. believing

  881. this wonderful

  882. message?

  883. I wonder

  884. what it

  885. really is

  886. at our

  887. hearts.

  888. However,

  889. the Lord

  890. Jesus then

  891. went on to

  892. ask that

  893. the cup

  894. would be

  895. removed

  896. from him.

  897. and now

  898. we're

  899. beginning

  900. to get

  901. meat

  902. and the

  903. bone

  904. about

  905. the

  906. figurative

  907. use

  908. of the

  909. language.

  910. What

  911. was it

  912. a cup

  913. of?

  914. Isaiah

  915. 51

  916. says,

  917. you who

  918. have

  919. drunk

  920. from the

  921. hand of

  922. the Lord

  923. the cup

  924. of his

  925. wrath.

  926. Jeremiah

  927. 25,

  928. take

  929. from my

  930. hand

  931. this

  932. cup

  933. of the

  934. wine

  935. of

  936. wrath

  937. and make

  938. all the

  939. nations

  940. to whom

  941. I send

  942. you

  943. drink

  944. it.

  945. And in

  946. the book

  947. of Revelation

  948. in the

  949. New Testament

  950. we're

  951. given this

  952. warning.

  953. He,

  954. that is

  955. the idolater,

  956. the one

  957. who would

  958. replace

  959. God

  960. with anything

  961. other than

  962. God,

  963. who will

  964. deliberately

  965. shun

  966. God

  967. and the

  968. gospel

  969. and his

  970. Christ,

  971. he also

  972. will drink

  973. the wine

  974. of God's

  975. wrath,

  976. poured

  977. full

  978. strength

  979. into the

  980. cup

  981. of his

  982. anger.

  983. And when

  984. the Lord

  985. Jesus

  986. is going

  987. to take

  988. from the

  989. very hand

  990. of God

  991. a cup,

  992. it is

  993. a cup

  994. of wrath,

  995. a cup

  996. of wrath.

  997. And as

  998. the Lord

  999. Jesus

  1000. anticipates

  1001. this,

  1002. the hand

  1003. of a

  1004. holy

  1005. God,

  1006. he says,

  1007. let this

  1008. cup

  1009. pass

  1010. from me.

  1011. Now I've

  1012. become convinced

  1013. and I hope

  1014. to show you

  1015. that this

  1016. was not

  1017. a request

  1018. by the

  1019. Lord

  1020. Jesus

  1021. to not

  1022. die.

  1023. That

  1024. wasn't

  1025. his request,

  1026. but rather

  1027. that as

  1028. he faced

  1029. the wrath

  1030. of God

  1031. against

  1032. sin,

  1033. of a

  1034. holy God

  1035. who for

  1036. centuries

  1037. had been

  1038. offended

  1039. by all

  1040. of humanity

  1041. and who

  1042. was going

  1043. to hold

  1044. to account

  1045. those sins

  1046. done by

  1047. others

  1048. against

  1049. other human

  1050. beings,

  1051. as he

  1052. is the

  1053. judge

  1054. of all

  1055. and as

  1056. he is to

  1057. exert

  1058. justice,

  1059. he is

  1060. poised

  1061. ready

  1062. on that

  1063. night

  1064. in

  1065. Gethsemane

  1066. to pour

  1067. all of

  1068. his wrath,

  1069. all of

  1070. his offenses

  1071. on his

  1072. own

  1073. son.

  1074. And

  1075. Jesus'

  1076. agony

  1077. as he

  1078. anticipates

  1079. this

  1080. is that

  1081. only he

  1082. can

  1083. understand

  1084. what this

  1085. is about.

  1086. Because

  1087. as God

  1088. in the

  1089. flesh,

  1090. he too

  1091. has that

  1092. holy

  1093. revulsion

  1094. of sin

  1095. and

  1096. sinfulness.

  1097. And the

  1098. beauty

  1099. of his

  1100. perfect

  1101. and

  1102. sinless

  1103. life,

  1104. of the

  1105. one

  1106. substance

  1107. with God

  1108. the Father

  1109. and God

  1110. the Holy

  1111. Spirit,

  1112. he sees

  1113. what it

  1114. will cost.

  1115. He's about

  1116. to feel

  1117. the full

  1118. weight

  1119. and fury

  1120. of his

  1121. father's

  1122. anger

  1123. against

  1124. sin.

  1125. Only

  1126. he in

  1127. his

  1128. holiness

  1129. can

  1130. fully

  1131. anticipate

  1132. and

  1133. know

  1134. what

  1135. is

  1136. to

  1137. come.

  1138. He

  1139. knows

  1140. the

  1141. enormity

  1142. of the

  1143. judgment

  1144. that

  1145. must be.

  1146. He

  1147. is the

  1148. one who

  1149. is

  1150. sinless.

  1151. He

  1152. didn't

  1153. deserve

  1154. to drink

  1155. the cup

  1156. of God's

  1157. wrath,

  1158. but he

  1159. was willing

  1160. and obedient.

  1161. He

  1162. says

  1163. previously,

  1164. shall I

  1165. not drink

  1166. the cup

  1167. my

  1168. father

  1169. has

  1170. given

  1171. me?

  1172. And so

  1173. we see

  1174. on the

  1175. one hand

  1176. his

  1177. holy

  1178. soul

  1179. and the

  1180. revulsion

  1181. for sin,

  1182. dreading the

  1183. judgment

  1184. of God

  1185. and all

  1186. that that

  1187. must mean.

  1188. And yet

  1189. on the

  1190. other

  1191. hand,

  1192. his

  1193. obedience

  1194. to the

  1195. father

  1196. and his

  1197. love

  1198. for you

  1199. and for

  1200. me.

  1201. To take

  1202. that which

  1203. we need

  1204. not face

  1205. if we

  1206. come in

  1207. faith

  1208. and repentance

  1209. and accepting

  1210. the sacrifice

  1211. of Christ,

  1212. accepting

  1213. the fullness

  1214. of the life

  1215. that he

  1216. has lived

  1217. and all

  1218. his sinlessness,

  1219. all his

  1220. purity,

  1221. all his

  1222. righteousness.

  1223. and

  1224. prophetically

  1225. he

  1226. understands

  1227. what is

  1228. going to

  1229. happen

  1230. because

  1231. Isaiah

  1232. had

  1233. anticipated

  1234. this

  1235. night

  1236. and he

  1237. uses

  1238. the words

  1239. he was

  1240. crushed

  1241. for

  1242. our

  1243. iniquities,

  1244. crushed

  1245. for our

  1246. iniquities

  1247. and the

  1248. weight

  1249. of all

  1250. the sin

  1251. of the

  1252. world

  1253. throughout

  1254. all of

  1255. human

  1256. history

  1257. is placed

  1258. upon him

  1259. and the

  1260. judgment

  1261. of God

  1262. against that

  1263. and only

  1264. he can

  1265. fully

  1266. appreciate

  1267. all that

  1268. that means.

  1269. Matthew

  1270. and Mark

  1271. relate

  1272. that Jesus

  1273. prayed

  1274. three times

  1275. and Luke

  1276. gives a

  1277. single

  1278. summary

  1279. description

  1280. and

  1281. includes

  1282. a detail

  1283. that wasn't

  1284. included

  1285. by Matthew

  1286. and Mark

  1287. that after

  1288. praying the

  1289. first time

  1290. there appeared

  1291. to him

  1292. an angel

  1293. from heaven

  1294. strengthening

  1295. him

  1296. and being

  1297. in agony

  1298. he prayed

  1299. more earnestly

  1300. and after

  1301. that first

  1302. prayer

  1303. as he

  1304. anticipates

  1305. the wrath

  1306. the judgment

  1307. of God

  1308. he's praying

  1309. don't save

  1310. me from

  1311. the death

  1312. that I

  1313. must die

  1314. but save

  1315. me from

  1316. the wrath

  1317. and all

  1318. that that

  1319. means

  1320. I'll

  1321. willingly

  1322. die

  1323. for all

  1324. of humanity

  1325. I'll pay

  1326. the price

  1327. in my

  1328. death

  1329. but that

  1330. wasn't

  1331. enough

  1332. God

  1333. says

  1334. it's not

  1335. enough

  1336. for you

  1337. to die

  1338. you've

  1339. got to

  1340. be judged

  1341. as if

  1342. you

  1343. yourself

  1344. had

  1345. committed

  1346. all of

  1347. those sins

  1348. and I'm

  1349. going to

  1350. pour out

  1351. all my

  1352. wrath

  1353. that's

  1354. the death

  1355. that he

  1356. must

  1357. die

  1358. and so

  1359. Matthew's

  1360. account

  1361. of the

  1362. second

  1363. prayer

  1364. and included

  1365. that in

  1366. the reading

  1367. for the

  1368. second

  1369. time

  1370. he went

  1371. away

  1372. and prayed

  1373. my

  1374. father

  1375. if

  1376. this

  1377. cannot

  1378. pass

  1379. unless I

  1380. drink it

  1381. your will

  1382. be done

  1383. if

  1384. this

  1385. if

  1386. this

  1387. wrath

  1388. if

  1389. this

  1390. judgment

  1391. if

  1392. this

  1393. dreadful

  1394. torture

  1395. for sin

  1396. and so

  1397. many

  1398. theologians

  1399. reject the

  1400. idea that

  1401. someone could

  1402. be personally

  1403. made to

  1404. pay the

  1405. price for

  1406. my sin

  1407. that's so

  1408. unfair of

  1409. God

  1410. well it

  1411. isn't because

  1412. God's son

  1413. says

  1414. I want

  1415. it

  1416. I want

  1417. you to

  1418. judge me

  1419. father

  1420. for their

  1421. sin

  1422. I'll bear

  1423. it

  1424. I'll face

  1425. it

  1426. and after

  1427. that first

  1428. prayer

  1429. he has

  1430. given that

  1431. divine

  1432. heavenly

  1433. sustenance

  1434. and God's

  1435. answer is

  1436. given

  1437. in the

  1438. strengthening

  1439. by the

  1440. angel

  1441. and so

  1442. as John

  1443. Piper says

  1444. Jesus did

  1445. not go on

  1446. praying for

  1447. the cup

  1448. to pass

  1449. he went

  1450. on praying

  1451. for success

  1452. in drinking

  1453. it

  1454. if this

  1455. may not

  1456. pass away

  1457. from me

  1458. except I

  1459. drink it

  1460. your will

  1461. be done

  1462. your will

  1463. be done

  1464. the greatest

  1465. prayer

  1466. and the

  1467. prayer life

  1468. of the

  1469. Lord Jesus

  1470. is rich

  1471. and I'm so

  1472. glad you're

  1473. going to be

  1474. thinking about

  1475. the Lord's

  1476. prayer

  1477. of course

  1478. there is

  1479. another

  1480. prayer in

  1481. John 17

  1482. where his

  1483. heart of

  1484. love and

  1485. his concern

  1486. for his

  1487. disciples

  1488. is just so

  1489. evident as

  1490. on the

  1491. surface

  1492. to see

  1493. how much

  1494. he loved

  1495. but even

  1496. this prayer

  1497. brief though

  1498. it is

  1499. perhaps the

  1500. greatest

  1501. prayer

  1502. that the

  1503. Lord Jesus

  1504. prayed

  1505. your will

  1506. be done

  1507. it wasn't

  1508. about us

  1509. it's about

  1510. him

  1511. and his

  1512. relationship

  1513. with God

  1514. and about

  1515. this great

  1516. work

  1517. that God

  1518. has given

  1519. him

  1520. to do

  1521. Hebrews 5

  1522. in the

  1523. days of

  1524. his flesh

  1525. Jesus

  1526. offered up

  1527. prayers and

  1528. supplications

  1529. with loud

  1530. cries and

  1531. tears

  1532. to him

  1533. who was

  1534. able to

  1535. save him

  1536. from death

  1537. and he

  1538. was heard

  1539. because of

  1540. his reverence

  1541. then it

  1542. goes on

  1543. although

  1544. he was

  1545. a son

  1546. he learned

  1547. obedience

  1548. through what

  1549. he suffered

  1550. being made

  1551. perfect

  1552. he became

  1553. the source

  1554. of eternal

  1555. salvation

  1556. to all

  1557. who obey

  1558. him

  1559. and the

  1560. Lord Jesus

  1561. the son of

  1562. God

  1563. in the

  1564. flesh

  1565. fully human

  1566. had to

  1567. learn

  1568. what

  1569. obedience

  1570. to God

  1571. the father

  1572. was

  1573. and he

  1574. went to

  1575. the utmost

  1576. extremity

  1577. the extremity

  1578. to which

  1579. others

  1580. may have

  1581. gone or

  1582. approximated

  1583. to give

  1584. their life

  1585. for the

  1586. Lord Jesus

  1587. give their

  1588. lives

  1589. for their

  1590. faith

  1591. whether it's

  1592. Syrian

  1593. believers

  1594. Pakistani

  1595. believers

  1596. presently

  1597. or whether

  1598. it's the

  1599. martyrs of

  1600. the early

  1601. church

  1602. they gave

  1603. their lives

  1604. because

  1605. Jesus

  1606. obedience

  1607. is the

  1608. model

  1609. for our

  1610. obedience

  1611. for our

  1612. obedience

  1613. and we

  1614. who would

  1615. come to

  1616. know

  1617. Christ

  1618. and God

  1619. as our

  1620. father

  1621. to know

  1622. the freedom

  1623. of sins

  1624. being forgiven

  1625. it's on the

  1626. basis of

  1627. our own

  1628. obedience

  1629. to the

  1630. word of

  1631. God

  1632. to come

  1633. in faith

  1634. believing

  1635. and in

  1636. repenting

  1637. of the

  1638. sin that

  1639. caused

  1640. us

  1641. and to

  1642. acknowledge

  1643. that in

  1644. Christ

  1645. he has

  1646. paid the

  1647. debt

  1648. fully and

  1649. completely

  1650. what a

  1651. prayer

  1652. and he

  1653. did it

  1654. for me

  1655. and he

  1656. did it

  1657. for you

  1658. and so

  1659. we read

  1660. these

  1661. great words

  1662. being

  1663. found in

  1664. human

  1665. form

  1666. he humbled

  1667. himself

  1668. by becoming

  1669. obedient

  1670. to the

  1671. point of

  1672. death

  1673. even death

  1674. on a

  1675. cross

  1676. therefore

  1677. God

  1678. has highly

  1679. exalted

  1680. him

  1681. the one who

  1682. could appreciate

  1683. all that it

  1684. cost

  1685. his son

  1686. that great

  1687. burden

  1688. that awful

  1689. dread

  1690. that

  1691. unswerving

  1692. obedience

  1693. that great

  1694. love for

  1695. his father

  1696. that abundant

  1697. love for you

  1698. and for me

  1699. only God

  1700. could appreciate

  1701. it

  1702. therefore

  1703. God

  1704. has highly

  1705. exalted

  1706. him

  1707. and bestowed

  1708. on him

  1709. the name

  1710. that is above

  1711. every name

  1712. so that

  1713. at the name

  1714. of Jesus

  1715. every knee

  1716. should bow

  1717. in heaven

  1718. and on earth

  1719. and under

  1720. the earth

  1721. and every

  1722. tongue

  1723. confess

  1724. that Jesus

  1725. Christ

  1726. is Lord

  1727. to the glory

  1728. of God

  1729. the father

  1730. is that

  1731. the kind

  1732. of obedience

  1733. we're willing

  1734. to give

  1735. God

  1736. to find

  1737. forgiveness

  1738. for our

  1739. sins

  1740. to find

  1741. a relationship

  1742. that is

  1743. beyond

  1744. every

  1745. relationship

  1746. that can

  1747. be offered

  1748. upon earth

  1749. and to be

  1750. linked

  1751. eternally

  1752. with the

  1753. very God

  1754. of heaven

  1755. and all

  1756. of the work

  1757. has been

  1758. done

  1759. except

  1760. for us

  1761. to bow

  1762. the knee

  1763. and to

  1764. come

  1765. to him

  1766. some

  1767. think it's

  1768. an awful

  1769. cost

  1770. but I

  1771. came across

  1772. this

  1773. quotation

  1774. and it

  1775. seemed to

  1776. sum it

  1777. up

  1778. as we

  1779. close

  1780. when we

  1781. are crushed

  1782. like grapes

  1783. we cannot

  1784. think of the

  1785. wine

  1786. we will

  1787. become

  1788. and in the

  1789. life of the

  1790. Lord Jesus

  1791. and his

  1792. eternal glory

  1793. and that we

  1794. shall all

  1795. see his

  1796. glory

  1797. my

  1798. my how

  1799. wonderful

  1800. that will

  1801. be

  1802. and for

  1803. you and

  1804. I

  1805. today

  1806. to come

  1807. to an

  1808. end of

  1809. ourselves

  1810. and our

  1811. struggling

  1812. and to

  1813. come

  1814. willingly

  1815. and to

  1816. thank Jesus

  1817. for what

  1818. he has

  1819. done

  1820. in bearing

  1821. our sins

  1822. on the

  1823. cross

  1824. and in

  1825. coming to

  1826. know him

  1827. and in

  1828. a life

  1829. of absolute

  1830. surrender

  1831. and

  1832. obedience

  1833. to be

  1834. crushed

  1835. all our

  1836. pride

  1837. all our

  1838. thinking

  1839. we can

  1840. do it

  1841. our way

  1842. just to

  1843. be crushed

  1844. so that

  1845. God can

  1846. pour us

  1847. out

  1848. like a

  1849. beautiful

  1850. wine

  1851. let's

  1852. pray

  1853. father we

  1854. thank you

  1855. for this

  1856. glimpse again

  1857. into

  1858. Gethsemane's

  1859. garden

  1860. we think

  1861. of the

  1862. cup

  1863. that the

  1864. Lord Jesus

  1865. took

  1866. at that

  1867. communion

  1868. service

  1869. and we

  1870. think of

  1871. all that it

  1872. meant and

  1873. only he

  1874. could fully

  1875. understand

  1876. and yet

  1877. he gave us

  1878. this to

  1879. remember him

  1880. by and we

  1881. thank you

  1882. that we

  1883. regularly

  1884. remember his

  1885. body given

  1886. for us

  1887. and his

  1888. blood poured

  1889. out

  1890. father we

  1891. pray that

  1892. we might

  1893. be touched

  1894. with the

  1895. enormity

  1896. of our

  1897. sin

  1898. but

  1899. especially

  1900. of the

  1901. wonder

  1902. of the

  1903. obedience

  1904. of your

  1905. son

  1906. and that

  1907. we might

  1908. come and

  1909. give you

  1910. thanks and

  1911. praise

  1912. for all

  1913. that he

  1914. has done

  1915. and in

  1916. going to

  1917. Calvary's

  1918. cross

  1919. and bearing

  1920. the judgment

  1921. for my

  1922. sin

  1923. that I

  1924. can now

  1925. come to

  1926. him

  1927. confessing

  1928. as Lord

  1929. trust in

  1930. his sacrifice

  1931. and trust in

  1932. his redeeming

  1933. grace

  1934. and to

  1935. know a

  1936. life of

  1937. fullness

  1938. father we

  1939. pray that

  1940. each and

  1941. every one

  1942. of us

  1943. might do

  1944. that

  1945. we pray

  1946. our father

  1947. we will

  1948. hold the

  1949. name of

  1950. Jesus

  1951. in such

  1952. awe and

  1953. reverence

  1954. it will

  1955. overcome

  1956. our reluctance

  1957. our fear

  1958. our shame

  1959. perhaps

  1960. just to

  1961. say to

  1962. those who

  1963. would abuse

  1964. it

  1965. please don't

  1966. use it

  1967. that way

  1968. he's such

  1969. a lovely

  1970. man

  1971. he's done

  1972. a wonderful

  1973. thing for

  1974. me

  1975. and I

  1976. want to

  1977. protect

  1978. his name

  1979. father help

  1980. us to

  1981. live for

  1982. Jesus

  1983. to bow

  1984. the knee

  1985. now in

  1986. obedience

  1987. coming to

  1988. him in

  1989. faith

  1990. or in

  1991. a renewed

  1992. commitment

  1993. to lift

  1994. up his

  1995. name

  1996. father we

  1997. pray that

  1998. you would

  1999. be glorified

  2000. and only

  2001. what remains

  2002. of your

  2003. word will

  2004. remain in

  2005. our hearts

  2006. and our

  2007. minds

  2008. for we

  2009. pray together

  2010. in the

  2011. name of

  2012. Jesus

  2013. amen
