  1. Good afternoon everyone. I'd repeat Fraser's warm welcome. Really good to have you with us today.

  2. As I said, we're starting a new series looking at the Lord's Prayer, this great pattern prayer that the Lord Jesus gave us.

  3. And today we're looking particularly at what it tells us about God's glory.

  4. One of the great privileges of being a grandfather is that you get to do things you may not have done for many years.

  5. One of these is Lego. Archie loves Lego and he also loves Batman.

  6. So he was delighted when he got given a Batman Lego kit.

  7. The only problem was it was a little bit old for him.

  8. He would have struggled to make it by himself, so of course he came and said, Grandad, you do it.

  9. So we sat down together and we had a go.

  10. There are two types of ways you can do Lego.

  11. You can do kind of freestyle and build fancy towers or whatever it is and be really creative about it.

  12. Or you can take the instructions that Lego give you and you can follow them to the letter.

  13. And if you want to build the model that you see in the picture in the box, then obviously you have to follow the instructions very carefully.

  14. And so Archie and I together, we followed the instructions and we just about managed to come up with the model that it was supposed to be.

  15. But we had to exactly do what it said in the instructions.

  16. And when some people look at the Lord's Prayer, that's how they would see it.

  17. It is a prayer that we should follow, that we should say, that we should repeat and go through it exactly the way that the Lord Jesus said it.

  18. Many churches, every week in their service, as part of their prayers in the service, the congregation would say together the Lord's Prayer.

  19. And in many ways, that's a good discipline.

  20. I think we could probably do it more often than we do.

  21. But it is taking the Lord's Prayer and saying it as Jesus told it.

  22. Quite often in the slightly old-fashioned but very majestic language of the authorised version.

  23. So that is one way in which we can look at the Lord's Prayer.

  24. This week I'm doing something else that I haven't done for many years.

  25. I'm doing a business presentation, but I'm not representing a business.

  26. I'm doing it as myself.

  27. And in many ways, that's quite liberating.

  28. I don't have to worry about whether what I'm saying ties in with what my employer's policy is.

  29. But it does create its own challenges as well.

  30. And one of these is you need to develop your own PowerPoint.

  31. You can't just take the standard company one and use it.

  32. You need to develop your own.

  33. So I spent a bit of time looking through Microsoft's templates.

  34. And I decided this was the one that I was going to use.

  35. Except not quite.

  36. So I took that template and I adapted a bit to meet my needs.

  37. Now you can see the shape is different.

  38. The colours are different.

  39. The border is different.

  40. The fonts are different.

  41. But I think it is still recognisably the same PowerPoint template.

  42. I've taken something that someone else had developed.

  43. And I put my own stamp on it.

  44. And I've used it for something that is relevant for me.

  45. And that ties in with the way that I would want PowerPoint to look.

  46. And that's the second way that people can look at the Lord's Prayer.

  47. It's not necessarily just something that we have to go through and repeat exactly the words of Jesus.

  48. It gives us a template, a pattern, a recipe.

  49. You can use different terms depending on what things you're interested in.

  50. But it gives us something we can take.

  51. The basic ingredients are there.

  52. But we can adapt them to our needs and our circumstances.

  53. And Graeme's very helpfully, as we've looked at this series, he divided the Lord's Prayer up into five headings.

  54. These are going to be the five weeks we look at it.

  55. And so he says, first part of the Lord's Prayer is about God's glory.

  56. It's about you recognising who God is and desiring that other people recognise it as well.

  57. It's then about God's will.

  58. It's about submitting to God, recognising that he is king, recognising that he deserves our obedience and saying,

  59. your will be done.

  60. It then talks about provision, God providing for us.

  61. Providing in the words of the Lord's Prayer our daily bread, but much wider than that, providing everything that we need.

  62. It talks about our need for forgiveness.

  63. That we're all sinners, that we do what is wrong, as we would seek to forgive others, so we seek God's forgiveness for us.

  64. And then it talks about guidance.

  65. About the fact that we need God's help and God's direction in our lives, particularly to avoid us falling into wrong ways.

  66. And these five headings can be part of any prayer.

  67. These are the five key things that we probably want to think about as we pray to God.

  68. To pray for his glory.

  69. To pledge our allegiance to him.

  70. To recognise that he gives us everything we need and without him we have nothing.

  71. To seek his forgiveness and thank him that he gives it through the Lord Jesus.

  72. And to ask for his guidance, particularly in being able to serve him and follow him.

  73. It is a template prayer.

  74. Now I think both ways of using it are perfectly legitimate and we may do them both at different times.

  75. But the key thing with both, which is what was in the video we saw a while ago, is it's universal.

  76. If we're repeating the Lord's Prayer as the Lord said it, then we can all identify with the words and understand them and think how that applies to me.

  77. If we're taking it and using it as a template, as an example prayer that we can use as we build our own thoughts and our own needs into it.

  78. We can also see these are the same needs that everyone in the world has.

  79. And so again it is a universal prayer.

  80. And I hope over the next few weeks we will be able to identify with what the Lord Jesus says in his prayer.

  81. And to recognise their relevance to us.

  82. And so that as we pray, whether we pray in the words of the Lord's Prayer or whether we use our own words in the spirit of the Lord's Prayer.

  83. That we will pray believing that God hears and that God answers and that our prayers are powerful.

  84. So today we're looking at the very first part of the Lord's Prayer, which is in verse 9 of Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  85. And it says quite simply, the Lord Jesus says,

  86. This then is how you should pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  87. And Graham's given this the title, God's Glory.

  88. And I think that's entirely appropriate.

  89. We see God's Glory in the description that is given to him at the beginning.

  90. And we see our desire for God's Glory in our prayer that his name may be hallowed.

  91. So let's take the two in turn.

  92. Our Father in heaven.

  93. Very simple introduction as we come.

  94. Very simple description of God.

  95. And yet so, so profound.

  96. So the first thing it says is God is our Father.

  97. He's not just the Father, our Father.

  98. He is our Father.

  99. We could say he is my Father.

  100. Now let's remember the Lord Jesus is talking to people here who are his followers, his disciples.

  101. So he's not saying that God is the Father of everyone in the world.

  102. Whether they believe in him, whether they've accepted him or rejected him, completely regardless.

  103. God is the Father of those who have chosen to trust him and to follow him.

  104. And in particular, God is the Father of those who have come to him through the Lord Jesus

  105. and had forgiveness of sins through the Lord Jesus and his death on the cross for us.

  106. And so are able to call God our Father because of our relationship with Jesus and through that our relationship with God.

  107. John in his first letter, he marvels at how great the love of God is for us.

  108. That we should be called the children of God.

  109. But he says that is what you, what we are.

  110. If we know the Lord Jesus, if we are depending on him for our future, for our salvation,

  111. then we are God's children.

  112. God is our Father.

  113. And we can come to him and address him as our Father, as my Father in our private prayers

  114. and know that he cares for us each individually

  115. and that he wants what is best for each of us as individuals.

  116. Our Father in heaven.

  117. Then God is our Father.

  118. Now, I expect in a congregation like this, there are lots of different experiences of what a father is like.

  119. Some of us have had fathers who have been great examples to us,

  120. who we've been able to look up to and whom we can respect

  121. and see as people who we would want to be like.

  122. And although not perfect, we can see, yes, that gives a little bit of a picture of what God is like for us.

  123. Other people, sadly, have had fathers who weren't so good.

  124. And they may look back on their childhood with very unhappy memories

  125. and think that their father really didn't do what a good father should

  126. and isn't a very good person or a very good model that they should follow and respect.

  127. Others may never have known your father.

  128. You may never have known him, so you don't have someone in that kind of role you can look back on.

  129. Whatever our experience, we can take God as being the best father that there ever could be.

  130. Showing love for us all individually and collectively.

  131. And in particular, as I put up on the screen, doing two things.

  132. He provides for us and he protects us.

  133. These are two fundamental parts of the role of a good father, aren't they?

  134. Providing for you and protecting you.

  135. So we have, later in the Lord's Prayer, we have give us our daily bread.

  136. That is God's provision for us.

  137. Without God, we have nothing.

  138. Without God, we couldn't exist in this world.

  139. Without God, we would have none of the luxuries that most of us enjoy.

  140. We wouldn't have the basics of daily life.

  141. We depend on God's provision entirely.

  142. And God is the great father who provides abundantly what we need

  143. and who is always kind and always caring and always doing what is best for us.

  144. And our father in heaven, too, is one who protects us.

  145. Again, it comes in the prayer when it talks about delivering us from the evil one.

  146. And if we have our lives in God's hands, whatever may happen to us,

  147. whatever circumstances we may face,

  148. we can be confident that he will work them for our good,

  149. that his will is best,

  150. and that if we just willingly submit to him and allow him to direct our ways,

  151. then he will give us what is best.

  152. He will protect us.

  153. He will bring us safely to be ultimately with the Lord Jesus when we leave this world.

  154. He is a father who provides for us and who protects us

  155. and does it, as we said, for each of us personally.

  156. But it's not just our father.

  157. Sometimes we just say these words, our father.

  158. Perhaps we should say the full words.

  159. He is our father in heaven.

  160. Now, in heaven isn't meant to be just a geographical comment.

  161. We're here on earth.

  162. God's up in heaven.

  163. He's a long way away.

  164. That is not at all what the meaning of it is.

  165. Again, I think there are two things that are really important

  166. from the fact that he is our father in heaven.

  167. The first is that he is holy.

  168. Holy really just means different, separate, of a different kind.

  169. And I think part of the reason why the Lord Jesus said our father in heaven

  170. was as a reminder that we are not to become too familiar with God.

  171. Take God for granted, almost as if he was one of us.

  172. When we come before God in prayer,

  173. we come before the great creator and sustainer of the universe.

  174. We come in front of the one who is all-powerful, all-loving,

  175. and holy, you can't even look on sin.

  176. And coming to God as our father is a wonderful privilege

  177. that is only possible because we come through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  178. And so we need to come to him with reverence, with awe,

  179. and with an understanding of just how great this God whom we are praying to is.

  180. Doesn't mean we don't come to him as our father.

  181. And that is still the case.

  182. And we know that he loves us and he cares for us.

  183. But we come recognizing that we are weak, we are insignificant,

  184. and God's glory is so great that we can only begin to scratch the surface of it in our thoughts.

  185. He is holy.

  186. I think Father in heaven too is the idea of the power of God.

  187. A human father, however loving, however caring they may be for their children,

  188. there's no way they can do everything the children need or be everything to their families.

  189. And yet God can.

  190. God is all-powerful.

  191. There's nothing that is too difficult for God.

  192. And when we come to this God in prayer,

  193. we come to the one who is the master of all things,

  194. who is able to do everything and to do much more than we could ever think or expect from him.

  195. So we come with awe, but we should also be coming with expectation,

  196. recognizing that God is so powerful that nothing is beyond him,

  197. that nothing is too difficult for him.

  198. So we come to our Father in heaven,

  199. our glorious almighty Father,

  200. but our Father who cares for each of us individually and intimately

  201. and wants the best for all of us as a good Father does.

  202. And we come with confidence that he is glorious

  203. and that he will glorify his name

  204. and even that he will do it through us,

  205. weak and sinful as we are.

  206. He is our Father in heaven.

  207. Then the Lord says,

  208. Hallowed be your name.

  209. Now I suspect this is the part of the Lord's Prayer

  210. that even in the modern translations,

  211. people struggle a little bit to understand.

  212. Although in the New International Version

  213. they try to use modern English,

  214. the word hallowed isn't really one that trips off your tongue

  215. as something that we use in everyday life.

  216. It is slightly archaic in many ways.

  217. We could paraphrase this,

  218. May your name be revered.

  219. May your name be held in the highest esteem.

  220. May your name be seen as important as it is

  221. and never abused.

  222. That is the import,

  223. that is the thought of what is being said here.

  224. Now we just know when we talk about the name of God,

  225. it's not just thinking of the letters G-O-D.

  226. It's not just thinking of the name

  227. as we might think of someone's name in our society today.

  228. Rather in Jewish culture,

  229. the name stood for the whole of the person.

  230. And the name of God speaks for all of God's personality

  231. and character,

  232. his power,

  233. his glory,

  234. his excellence.

  235. All of that is encompassed in his name.

  236. And so really the prayer is

  237. that God himself may be revered

  238. and worshipped

  239. and that people may recognise him

  240. for who he is.

  241. Starting with me,

  242. that I may recognise God

  243. as the great God of heaven

  244. and that also those round about me

  245. may come to understand that as well.

  246. But what does it mean,

  247. your name be revered?

  248. In practice, what does it mean?

  249. Well, let me suggest three things.

  250. It will affect what we say,

  251. our speech.

  252. Now, the most basic of levels.

  253. In our society today,

  254. the name of God is most often used

  255. as an expletive.

  256. It's used as an expression of shock

  257. or of anger

  258. or of something equivalent.

  259. I think it goes without saying

  260. that if we are Christians,

  261. if we're followers of the Lord Jesus,

  262. we would not want to use God's name

  263. in that way.

  264. That would not be revering God's name.

  265. It would also be contrary

  266. to the third commandment

  267. which says that we shouldn't misuse

  268. the name of God.

  269. Can I go a bit further?

  270. I think we shouldn't just accept

  271. that that's the way things are

  272. in our society.

  273. That everyone else uses the name of God

  274. in that way

  275. and we just have to live with it

  276. and there's nothing we can do about it.

  277. Now, I'm not saying every time

  278. someone abuses the name of God

  279. that we immediately need to jump on them

  280. and criticise them

  281. and put them down

  282. in some kind of way.

  283. But if we're Christians,

  284. if we're followers of the Lord Jesus,

  285. I think it's important

  286. that people realise

  287. that when they use God's name

  288. in a way that is inappropriate,

  289. that that is hurtful to us.

  290. It is not something

  291. that we feel is acceptable.

  292. And there will, I'm sure,

  293. be opportunities at times

  294. when we can talk to people

  295. and explain why it is

  296. that it's inappropriate

  297. to use God's name in that way.

  298. In some ways,

  299. that is what it means

  300. to be salt and light

  301. in our world.

  302. That we show the example

  303. by our own speech

  304. of how we should speak

  305. and how we should avoid

  306. abusing God's name.

  307. But also,

  308. that we explain to other people

  309. why it is

  310. that it's inappropriate.

  311. Perhaps something to take away

  312. and think about

  313. during this week.

  314. But it's wider than that

  315. in our speech,

  316. isn't it as well?

  317. It is not just the pure situation

  318. where God's name

  319. may not be revered

  320. as in his name,

  321. the word God,

  322. or in his name Jesus.

  323. It is also in the way

  324. that we generally speak

  325. and talk to other people.

  326. And perhaps particularly

  327. the way that we talk to him

  328. about God,

  329. if we do.

  330. We need to make sure

  331. that when we do that,

  332. that we're not too familiar

  333. or that we're not too light

  334. in the way that we use

  335. God's name and talk about him.

  336. That people recognize

  337. that here is someone

  338. who is really,

  339. really important to us,

  340. the most important person,

  341. God and the Lord Jesus

  342. in our whole lives.

  343. And we talk about him

  344. in a way that reflects that.

  345. Through our speech,

  346. we need to revere,

  347. to hallow the name of God.

  348. And then there are attitudes.

  349. Sometimes it seems

  350. that people's attitude

  351. is not so much

  352. hallowed be your name

  353. as hallowed be my name.

  354. That people are very self-centered

  355. and it can happen

  356. to Christians as well.

  357. That we're so,

  358. so centered in ourselves

  359. and what people think of us

  360. and our reputation

  361. that we forget

  362. that much more important

  363. is what they think

  364. about the Lord Jesus

  365. and how they view our God.

  366. And by our attitudes of life,

  367. by the humility

  368. that we display,

  369. if we know the Lord Jesus,

  370. by our attitudes towards others,

  371. but particularly by the way

  372. that we show our attitudes

  373. towards God.

  374. We can hallow his name

  375. through our lives

  376. and we can encourage others

  377. to do the same.

  378. And then finally,

  379. there are our actions.

  380. What we do.

  381. What we do in so many ways

  382. defines how people look at us

  383. and view us?

  384. What are our priorities?

  385. What are the kind of things

  386. that we enjoy

  387. and seem to relish the most?

  388. Are these things

  389. which are consistent

  390. with revering,

  391. with hallowing

  392. the name of God?

  393. What I do on a Monday

  394. or on a Friday evening

  395. or on a Saturday,

  396. if other Christians

  397. were to see it,

  398. would they feel

  399. that was an appropriate thing

  400. for someone who is a follower

  401. of the Lord Jesus

  402. to be doing?

  403. Or sometimes,

  404. do I pay homage

  405. to the Lord Jesus

  406. and to God the Father

  407. on a Sunday

  408. and in what I see in church?

  409. And yet,

  410. at times,

  411. if you looked at my life

  412. the rest of the week,

  413. it would be very different

  414. and I wouldn't be

  415. hallowing God's name.

  416. I wouldn't be showing reverence

  417. for my God

  418. or being obedient to him.

  419. I think there's a challenge there

  420. for all of us.

  421. How do we view our God

  422. and how does that impact

  423. in our speech,

  424. our attitudes

  425. and our actions?

  426. And frankly,

  427. we can't really begin

  428. to start praying properly

  429. for others

  430. and that they will revere,

  431. hallow the name of God

  432. unless we have shown

  433. in our own lives

  434. the importance

  435. that he has to us

  436. and our desire

  437. to follow him

  438. and to live for him

  439. and that his name,

  440. that his glory

  441. may be revealed

  442. to others

  443. through us.

  444. Let's this week

  445. very consciously think

  446. in what I say

  447. and how I treat others

  448. in my actions.

  449. Are these things

  450. bringing reverence

  451. to the name of God?

  452. Do they make me

  453. a good ambassador

  454. for the Lord Jesus?

  455. Or are there some things

  456. I need to change

  457. in my life

  458. so that I may truly

  459. be able to pray,

  460. hallowed be your name?

  461. We started with instructions

  462. and with a template.

  463. Let's end with something

  464. that I think

  465. is even more powerful,

  466. a role model.

  467. So here's someone

  468. who's a great role model

  469. in many ways.

  470. You probably recognise

  471. Roger Federer.

  472. Federer,

  473. probably the greatest

  474. male tennis player ever.

  475. Someone who is known

  476. for his skill,

  477. his fitness,

  478. his dedication,

  479. his focus,

  480. his style,

  481. and his good attitude

  482. in many ways to things.

  483. Someone who,

  484. an aspiring tennis player,

  485. would do well

  486. to look up to

  487. and to copy,

  488. not just in the ways

  489. he plays tennis,

  490. but also in the way

  491. he lives his life

  492. and the way

  493. he treats others.

  494. a good role model.

  495. And the question then is,

  496. am I a good role model?

  497. Can people look at me

  498. and when they see

  499. how I am

  500. and the way that I speak

  501. and the way that I act,

  502. can they see something

  503. of the Lord Jesus in that?

  504. Can they see something

  505. that is worth following?

  506. Or do they sometimes

  507. look at me and say,

  508. I'm not wanting anything

  509. to be anything like that.

  510. That's what a Christian's like.

  511. I don't want to be

  512. part of it.

  513. All of us,

  514. if we know the Lord Jesus,

  515. we're called to be

  516. role models for others.

  517. By our lives,

  518. to show who we love,

  519. who we serve,

  520. and who we want others

  521. to come to know.

  522. We're called to be those

  523. who through the way we live

  524. and the way we act,

  525. we bring glory

  526. to the name of God

  527. and we attract others to him

  528. as they see the difference

  529. that he makes

  530. in our lives.

  531. So I leave the challenge

  532. with you.

  533. Are you,

  534. if you're a Christian,

  535. are you a role model?

  536. Are you someone others

  537. can look up to

  538. and can see something

  539. of Lord Jesus in

  540. and can think,

  541. I want to be like that

  542. because of the way

  543. this person lives.

  544. I want to give glory

  545. to God

  546. for the fact

  547. that he has made

  548. such a difference

  549. in their lives.

  550. I kind of come back

  551. finally to what

  552. I talked about

  553. a little bit earlier,

  554. which is that we need God

  555. to be our personal father.

  556. It's not enough to say

  557. that God is the father

  558. of the world

  559. or to think God is the father

  560. of all mankind

  561. or whatever.

  562. We need to have

  563. that personal relationship

  564. with God

  565. through the Lord Jesus.

  566. We need to recognise

  567. our fear,

  568. our need for forgiveness,

  569. which is in the Lord's Prayer.

  570. We need to recognise

  571. that Jesus' death

  572. is the only way

  573. we can be forgiven

  574. and we need to come

  575. and to trust in him.

  576. And only when we do that

  577. can we fully understand

  578. the glory of our God.

  579. And only when we do that

  580. can we fully come

  581. to appreciate

  582. all that the Lord Jesus

  583. has done for us,

  584. all that God has done for us

  585. and all that he can

  586. continue to do for us.

  587. Let's make sure

  588. we're trusting

  589. in the Lord Jesus

  590. and let's this week

  591. go out

  592. and seek to live lives

  593. that bring praise

  594. and glory

  595. to our God.

  596. We're going to pray now

  597. and at the end

  598. of the prayer

  599. I'd invite us all

  600. to say

  601. the Lord's Prayer together.

  602. We're going to do it

  603. in the modern version

  604. rather than the additional one

  605. and the words

  606. will be up

  607. on the screen.

  608. So if you're comfortable

  609. please join in

  610. as we say together

  611. the words of the Lord's Prayer

  612. after I've prayed

  613. to begin with.

  614. Let's pray together.

  615. Our Father

  616. we thank you

  617. that you are a great

  618. a mighty

  619. and awesome God.

  620. We thank you

  621. that you are holy

  622. that you are separate

  623. from everything else

  624. and that you are

  625. above everything else.

  626. And yet we thank you

  627. that too

  628. that you are

  629. our Father.

  630. That if our trust is in Jesus

  631. we can come to you

  632. as your children

  633. and we can know

  634. that you care

  635. for our every need

  636. and that you are eager

  637. for your children

  638. to bring our praise

  639. and our request to you.

  640. Our Father

  641. this morning

  642. we would want to pray

  643. that your name

  644. may be hallowed

  645. that it may be revered

  646. that it may be

  647. seen for what it is

  648. and that you may be

  649. recognized as the great

  650. and the glorious God.

  651. We pray that that will happen

  652. first in our own lives

  653. that through our faith

  654. in the Lord Jesus

  655. and through seeking

  656. to follow him

  657. and by the power

  658. of your Holy Spirit

  659. that we may live

  660. as those

  661. who are a good role model

  662. for others

  663. and to glorify God

  664. through what we say

  665. and what we do.

  666. And we pray too

  667. that there may be

  668. a greater reverence

  669. for your name

  670. in our land.

  671. That there may be

  672. a turning back to you.

  673. That there may be

  674. a recognition

  675. of how far

  676. we have fallen

  677. as a nation

  678. and that there may be

  679. a real desire

  680. that your name

  681. may be hallowed,

  682. revered

  683. throughout our land

  684. and not just used

  685. as an expression

  686. of irritation

  687. or a shock

  688. or something else.

  689. We pray that you will

  690. move in our land

  691. that your name

  692. truly may be hallowed,

  693. may be revered,

  694. may be respected.

  695. And we ask this

  696. in the name

  697. of the Lord Jesus

  698. and we now pray

  699. the prayer

  700. that he has given to us.

  701. Our Father in heaven,

  702. hallowed be your name.

  703. Your kingdom come.

  704. Your will be done

  705. on earth

  706. as in heaven.

  707. Give us today

  708. our daily bread.

  709. Forgive us our sins

  710. as we forgive

  711. those who sin against us.

  712. Lead us not

  713. into temptation,

  714. but deliver us

  715. from evil.

  716. For the kingdom,

  717. the power,

  718. and the glory

  719. are yours

  720. now and forever.

  721. Amen.
